आज की दुनिया की एक गंभीर समस्या है । प्रकृति और पर्यावरण के प्रेमियों के लिए यह भारी चिंता का विषय बन गया है । इसकी चपेट में मानव-समुदाय ही नहीं, समस्त जीव-समुदाय आ गया है । इसके दुष्प्रभाव चारों ओर दिखाई दे रहे हैं । प्रदूषण का शाब्दिक अर्थ है-गंदगी । वह गंदगी जो हमारे चारों ओर फैल गई है और जिसकी गिरफ्त में पृथ्वी के सभी निवासी हैं उसे प्रदूषण कहा जाता है । प्रदूषण को मोटे तौर पर तीन श्रेणियों में विभक्त किया जा सकता है-वायु प्रदूषण, जल प्रदूषण और ध्वनि प्रदूषण । ये तीनों ही प्रकार के प्रदूषण मानव के स्वास्थ्य के लिए हानिकारक सिद्ध हो रहे हैं। वायु और जल प्रकृति-प्रदत्त जीवनदायी वस्तुएँ हैं । जीवों की उत्पत्ति और जीवन को बनाए रखने में इन दोनों वस्तुओं का बहुत बड़ा हाथ है । वायु में जहाँ सभी जीवधारी साँस लेते हैं वहीं जल को पीने के काम में लाते हैं । लेकिन ये दोनों ही वस्तुएं आजकल बहुत गंदी हो गई हैं । वायु प्रदूषण का प्रमुख कारण इसमें अनेक प्रकार की अशुद्ध गैसों का मिल जाना है । वायु में मानवीय गतिविधियों के कारण कार्बन डायऑक्साइड, कार्बन मोनो ऑक्साइड जैसे प्रदूषित तत्व भारी मात्रा में मिलते जा रहे हैं । जल में नगरों का कूड़ा-कचरा रासायनिक पदार्थों से युक्त गंदा पानी प्रवाहित किया जाता रहा है । इससे जल के भंडार; जैसे-तालाब, नदियाँ,झीलें और समुद्र का जल निरंतर प्रदूषित हो रहा है । ध्वनि प्रदूषण का मुख्य कारण है – बढ़ती आबादी के कारण निरंतर होनेवाला शोरगुल । घर के बरतनों की खट-पट, मशीनों की खट-पट और वाद्‌य-यंत्रों की झन-झन दिनों-दिन बढ़ती ही जा रही है । वाहनों का शोर, उपकरणों की चीख और चारों दिशाओं से आनेवाली विभिन्न प्रकार की आवाजें ध्वनि प्रदूषण को जन्म दे रही हैं । महानगरों में तो ध्वनि-प्रदूषण अपनी ऊँचाई पर है ।
