Solve : CONFIGMG -windows protection error...?

Answer»

good ol backup running Win 98SE,has started having problems after multiple attempts updating Viruscan, complete with uninstalls & reinstalls, requiring some registry editing. Will start in safe mode then I run scan disk, defrag & will run fine, but slow& slower (Pent3 500,512 mb) no infections or SPYWARE present. After CRASH,I run scan disk again,& same pattern.
I have found descriptions of CONFIGMG,with no real solutions, & wonder if there's program that can  check & repair registry. I am thinking of possibly installing XP as this has gone on for too long, & considering Win 98 support may not be worth it. Sorry if this has been posted, but I couldn't find it.Have you tried booting to DOS and running scanreg /fix?
Download and run Regclean (a MS program). Thanks for the response. Prior to your suggestion, when I could get online I ran a few "registry repair" utilities which seemed to fix a good portion of damage. After a few attempts I finally got it to open in DOS & ran scanreg/fix. At the end :"Windows found error in system FILE & was unable to fix the problem. Try deleting some files to free up disk space in Windows drive. If that doesn't work you will need to install Windows to a new directory."  That being said I exited out of the utility & it booted up alright into Win 98, & is running now, although it has done this in the past & then tripped over itself.
     2 QUESTIONS
1.  Deleting some files ? I have 1 20gig drive with over 9 gigs free,so I don't think space is the issue.
2. If reinstalling Windows to a new directory- still on the same hard drive,no ?just create a folder Windows 2 or similar ?
Now to re establish network connections.  You can try doing a "dirty" install, which is simply installing windows over top of itself (if you have your original CD). Windows will offer to install to a different directory (windows001 or similar). Don't accept it, but choose to install to the original c:\windows directory.

If you have a full system backup that was made (with MS backup) before the trouble started, you can insert the windows CD (hold down the shift key to prevent autostart) and browse to tools\sysrec. From there you can REINSTALL windows and the backup. Be sure to check the readme file or print it if necessary.many thanks again for the response. Got home after working & the system was still running, although the monitor never went into sleep mode. I ran MSCONFIG & added a couple of programs to startup, (Q Books,Spysweeper) & then restarted with everything running ok. Got 2 blue screens & again restarted 4 hrs ago, while refreshing the IP address for the networking (& that's ok.)
I suspect it still has some issues, but will wait to explore your recent suggestion. I never did a full system backup,so I guess that's moot. I may have done a somewhat "dirty" install,in that I reinstalled windows with my CD & boot floppy before posting to this site. When doing a dirty install as mentioned, does that have any effect on existing applications or folders(erased?) Will it correct by overwriting bad sectors like configmg & other conflicts?  I've been wondering if I could just insert my XP CD & run that on this system. (I know that formats the hard drive.)I would first check to see if this system's drivers could support XP though.

Solve : Windows ME startup .. problem?

Answer»

Well my friend called me up and asked me a QUESTION I did not know .. so I'm hoping one of you guys can tell me the solution to this PROBLEM. My friend made his custom COMPUTER, all the parts are in, everything is good and he has a Windows ME startup cd and floppy disc. He tells me that when he tries to install, something shows up and says he can't install .. something about it not being able to run on FAT 64. He tells me that on his previous custom computers, it worked FINE and tells me that it worked on a FAT 32 and he asked me how to turn his FAT 64 to a FAT 32 so that his Windows ME disc or cd works. Any HELP is appreciated. There is FAT32 and NTFS. I don't know what he is referring to, but if you boot with the floppy and run FDISK it will delete the partition and allow you to create a new one. Then you can format it any way you like.

Perhaps some details about the system would shed some light on this...

Solve : Troubles installing XP pro . . after fresh format?

Answer»

Because the computer would not boot from the CD drive, I had to create 6 boot DISKETTES with a downloadable program from microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?releaseid=33291).

The setup with the diskettes goes fine, and then it formats the drive w/out problems.  HOWEVER, after formatting is finished and XP is supposed to be setting up from the CD drive, it reads the disc and then stops with the following error message:

"The following value in the .SIF file used by setup is corrupted or missing.
Value 0 on the line in section [sourcedisksfiles] with key SP2.cab
Setup cannot continue, to quit press F3"

I tried this with several xp pro boot cds (all of which are legit), and this is driving me insane!  I even tried this process with another hard drive, and it yelded the same results.  I don't know if it has something to do with the BIOS settings, or the hard drive or the setup disks, or what.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you.

subfuscais the cd that is in the drive one of the service pack 2 cd's?
or a green xp pro cd?It's a service pack 2 disc. I will clean the discs and try it again.  I also did do a memory test previous to formatting, etc. and everything seemed OK. subfusca..... If I read you post correctly , you have already sucessfully installed XP pro and it's the SP2 cd your having trouble with .......Why not just D/L SP2 from M/S site ......

dl65  no no.  I wish that were the problem.  It's an XP pro (with SP2) cd.  I can't get the OS to install after it formats the HD.subfusca,

There are 6 different sets of floppy instal discs. There are one each for xp home& pro ORIGINAL release & xp home with sp 1 & 2 and one each for xp pro with sp 1&2, so make sure that you download the correct version of the floppys or you will end up with the setup files missing(.sif) Pick the correct one from this link>>>>

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q310994Thank you, guys!!!! That completely fixed my problem!  The link I initially found didn't include an XP pro "sp2" version for creating floppy disk setup.  However, the link that wrwss and mac provided was what I needed to use.

Problem solved.

Solve : Windows Explorer BLANK Screen!?

Answer»

While in Windows Explorer (not IE or Internet Explorer) but Windows Explorer and I TRY to do a FIND/Search, the search column/screen is completely blank.  The SAME when I try running Windows 'System Restore'.

This started after I ran a reigistry cleaning program.  It also happened about 8-9 months ago on another computer which was only fixed after I installed SP2.  However, this is another computer and it already has SP2 installed?

I could try reinstalling SP2 and it may fix the problem but I am TRYING to find THE PROBLEM and then fis only the problem.

I went to the Microsoft website and it had a fix IF the Restore Calendar is blank, I tried that fix but it did not help.

Since this is the SECOND time, on a second computer that this has happened it must not be to RARE!

ANY ideas??            THANKS

Erk.  Registry cleaning programs are very often spyware/malware in disguise.  Start by uninstalling that (if you haven't already).   I've no other ideas I'm afraid.

Solve : Outlook is moving inbox messages to deleted?

Answer»

I am using Windows XP and Outlook 2002.  I have had no PROBLEMS with this configuration for many MONTHS.  Within the LAST month (with no changes to the computer set-up) some incoming emails have started being diverted directly to the deleted folder.  I see the message saying New email has arrived and then the message goes directly to the deleted folder.   This seems to happen mainly with emails from one weather service and one FRIEND.

I have deleted all rules and gone to the Exception List and JunkSenders List folders and made sure they were EMPTY (even tho I had no rules regarding these senders).  Still the problem exisits.  All of the emails from the weather service get moved immediately, while only some of the emails from my friend get moved.  I do not know what got my email acting so crazy.

This is very perplexing!  Any answers or ideas will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Solve : deleting tmp internet files ??

to free up some space can i delete my entire temp internet files folder as this seems to be quite large and useless to me ?Yes, this is ALWAYS a good IDEA. Use DISK cleanup under Programs / Aceessories / System Tools. It would also be a good idea to run the Disk Defragmenter utility. That will make the COMPUTER faster, and possibly save space.

Solve : VNC Service??

Answer»

Hi,

SOMEONE OFFERS me a VNC remote service so that they can remotely via the net to take control of my PCs in order to fix them. I am not sure how safe it is and I am interested about what you would feel about this kind of service.

Richard.www.realvnc.com
It's reliable tool. I would offer...You can password protect the incoming connection, and with certain VNC software, you can insist on an encrypted connection.  Both makes the connection more secure.  If you are sat at your PC when the connection takes place, you can watch everything they do.  You should FIND it reasonably safe.  Just don't LEAVE the VNC SERVER running when you don't need it.

Solve : Autocomplete for passwords?

Answer»

Ah, for my first post, I have a TRICKY question.  I am using Windows XP.  I know how to clear HISTORY and passwords with AutoComplete.  It is easy to do if you want to clear all your passwords.

BUT......I do NOT want to go into AutoComplete and have it clear ALL my passwords. The ones that are there are correct and there is no need to clear and reenter them (especially since I probably WOULD not remember them all anyway).

The problem is, there are a few sites that I went to and the first time entering the site, when Windows asked if I wanted to remember the password I said no.  Now, of course, Windows no longer asks if it should remember the password ON THAT SITE, and I have to enter it by hand every time.

Is there a way to force Windows to ask to remember the passwords for those few sites WITHOUT having to RUN Auto Complete and delete them all? Or is there a place they are stored in the registry that I can ADD a password for a site?  Had I put the wrong one in, it would be easy to correct - but making it remember when it was told not to is the problem.

This is certainly not earthshattering, but it is frustrating.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks!
This won't help you now, but if you use Firefox instead of INTERNET Explorer (which you probably should), it lets you manually edit each entry.

Solve : WMP - Visual Settings Not Working?

Answer»

Good evening!

Using Windows Media Player 10.

Whenever I view video files on my computer, I always find the display much too dark for my taste. Following instructions, I go to Visual Settings under Improvements to change visuals such as Brightness and Contrast, but none of them work! Whenever I try to move the sliders up or down, they just pop RIGHT back to the default value as soon as I release the mouse button.

What's wrong, and how can I possibly fix it? If this option is out of the question, is there some other way to make your video files display at a hightened brightness and/or contrast? Any other program in which settings like these work?

Thank you in advance.

Best regards,
KindoYour terminology is not correct.  The menu title, under View, is Enhancements, Video Settings.

I get the same result you do; I can not change those settings.   Until you find the solution, an interim solution is to just use the adjustments on your monitor for brightness and contrast.

Edit: I posted this question on a newsgroup.  Will let you know whether someone provides a solution.OK, I did get a response from the message I posted in the newsgroup named microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player.  Here's the response:

"I'm not clear why, but they only appear to be availble for certain
types of video - and WMV video isn't one of them. The LOCKING of
settings is independent of the video performance settings.

I can adjust these settings when playing a DV / AVI or MPEG video -
but not when there's nothing in the now playing area.

I'd agree that rather like a graphic EQ, those settings should remain
locked until the user wishes to reset them. Though of course then we'd
have a flood of posts "video too dark" in this group, from people who
forgot they adjusted the settings."

Ah, okay. Well, I can't adjust my monitor settings any further. It's all maxed out, and it's still too dark. Oh well... Thank you for finding an answer. So we know that certain video files cannot have their brightness ALTERED in WMP, but is there any other way to make videos appear brighter? Keep in mind that I've ALREADY bumped up my monitor settings to the max. What about some kind of stand-alone program to further enhance the brightness/contrast of one's monitor?

Solve : Passing parameter to Ftp Script?

Answer»

Hi,

I am AUTOMATING an Ftp task.
Done mainly, just need to pass an parameter, which i am UNABLE to do.

What i am doing is:

ftp -s:Input_file hostname

username
password
commnad
bye

In the command i want to transfer one file.
This file will be given at the command prompt while calling that Ftp_Automate.bat so that it can be a general one.

Now how do i do this? You could create the input file on the fly from the batch file, and then call ftp.

Example:

GetFile.bat
ECHO OFF
echo open ftp.mysite.net > %temp%\ftp.data
echo bdetchevery > %temp%\ftp.data
echo mypasswd > %temp%\ftp.data
echo get %1 > %temp%\ftp.data
echo bye > %temp%\ftp.data
ftp -s:%temp%\ftp.data
erase %temp%\ftp.data

Don't forget to change the site, username, and password to whatever you want.
This file should create a file in your Tempdirectory CALLED ftp.data it will contain the script that the ftp program will input to read.

Note the line "echo get %1 > %temp%\ftp.data". The %1 will be substituded for the first parameter on the command line, %2 is the second parameter.

Etc.

Hope this helps,

Brad D.Thanks,

But in the end i ended up with that only.

I was just thinking there must be a formal way to pass a parameter without writing so much useless echoes.  8-)Sorry, I don't think ftp has it's own parameter passing scheme

I also noticed a bug in my script, I thought i might have made the mistake after I wrote it but wasn't at my computer to check.

Each of the echo's (after the first) should have >> not just one >

GetFile.bat
ECHO OFF
echo open ftp.mysite.net > %temp%\ftp.data
echo bdetchevery >> %temp%\ftp.data
echo mypasswd >> %temp%\ftp.data
echo get %1 >> %temp%\ftp.data
echo bye >> %temp%\ftp.data
ftp -s:%temp%\ftp.data
erase %temp%\ftp.data

Otherwise only the last line gets written to the file.

If you want to use less echos you could create a text file, say callled ftp.txt and put the following into it

open ftp.mysite.net
bdetchevery
passwd

then you could use the commands

type ftp.txt > %temp%\ftp.data
echo get %1 >> %temp%\ftp.data
echo bye >> %temp%\ftp.data
ftp -s:%temp%\ftp.data
erase %temp%\ftp.data

this use's less echo's

Solve : Media Center will not recognize 5.1 audio?

Answer»

I just purchased a NEW computer equipped with WINDOWS Media Center.  I also purchased a 5.1 surround sound system to USE with the computer.  When I play files outside of the media center, the surroud sound works properly.  When I play any file in the media center (music, tv, dvd), it only outputs 2 channel AUDIO.    I have done all of the proper set up and when I choose the "test" option, it works fine.  I tried the registry PATCH that was put out to fix this problem, and this has not solved it.  This is hugely frustrating and any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Solve : Laptop audio settings?

Answer»

Hello, I have a different laptop I am using currently.  It is an Acer 5002WLMi w/ 100 GB HDD, DVD+/-RW, 512MB DDR Memory, 1.6GHz, AMD Turion processor, with XP NATURALLY.  The laptop came preset with limited volume on it's INTERNAL speakers.

I was looking to get either an audio amplifier program, or something that would make the current internal speakers louder.  I recently set the bass & treble to nearly max [+12] which HELPED some, but it's still not that loud from the internal speakers.  I have the main volume control set at max and the wave volume at max as well.  Any ideas how to improve the audio? The internal speakers are not supposed to be very loud at all. I don't think any program can help you. Sorry   :-/  The best thing to do is go external.

FlameHeadphones?I changed the "Sound Effect Manager" settings to bass & treble both at nearly max (+12dB) right before I posted here so I didn't test out the settings.  It is a bit louder, in that it doesn't require the main volume control at the highest position after the change.  For instance, even at the current 3rd notch position it's louder than it was without CHANGING the bass & treble settings!  The wave volume is set to max on the slider BAR though.

It could be the internet, or the program that is playing the "streaming" audio, but it sounds like it's echoing when someone talks.  It isn't that noticeable when it's the words in a music song, just, say, when a DJ is talking it echoes.  The overall sound quality of the music stream is at 90% I'd estimate.

I have tried headphones, but they were cheap ones ($1-store headphones) and well they weren't the best quality headphones.  The audio was at medium loudness over the headphones, so possibly I could add better sound/volume with high(er)-wattage external speakers to the laptop.  It would kind of take away the convenience of being portable, but if I want the better sound or even just louder volume, I'd have to do it that way.

Solve : Screen constantly blinks(refreshes) on its own!!?

Answer»

Windows XP

NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000

256 RAM 3.0 GHZ Pentinum 4

Monitor: Gateway EV700

The monitor constantly REFRESHES or BLACKOUTS on its own and it's driving me crazy.  The computer freezes for a second and the SCREEN goes black for a second at the same time.  It does this anytime a new program is OPENED or anytime it feels like it.  It is actually doing it as I am typing this.  I have used various anti-virus scans like avg, panda titanium, and ewido anti-malware, but it hasn't worked.

Is this a hardware problem? related to power management?

Or is this a software problem?

Or do I have a virus?  All of the anti-virus programs say that I don't have a virus.

And last but not least How do I fix it??

Thanks in advance.

Another possibility:

Power surge.  This may be caused by the electricity coming from the electrical outlet, a hardware device in the computer, or the power supply.  Have an electrical check the voltage of the outlet.  If the voltage is OK, have a computer repair TECHNICIAN check the voltages of the power supply and other hardware of the system.

Solve : Windows not loading?

Answer»

Hello everyone. Just yesterday I had an Adware or Spyware "bug?" get onto my desk computer and when my cpu told me it was on there I couldn't click on start not OPEN some programs, so I had to restart and I thought If I did that I could use this program I have to get rid of it, well I restarted and it got past the screen where you can press f2 or f12, then the first Windows XP window, then the 2nd one where it's loading and it just stops, I went into safe MODE, nothing. It keeps freezing at the same spot.

I don't have the Windows XP CD, but would a boot disk work? I have the disks in order to make one, what should I do? Thank you.Boot into safe mode (F8 when the computer starts, before the Windows logo). Load the program, update if possible and run the scan there.Nothing works and I found out I cannot use a boot disk unless the disk was formatted on a machine using XP, any other solutions.Sooner or later you will need an XP CD. In your case it is sooner. Can you borrow one of the identical type to do a repair installation? Do you have files you need to retrieve? How come no XP CD by the way? Quote

I don't need any files, I don't care what I lose on the computer because it's nothing important. Solve : Can't get to hard drive from dos boot disk or cd?

Answer»

I'm getting  a corrupt FILE error when I attempt to start Windows XP. XP will not boot up in safe mode or any other selection. When I boot up from a dos boot disk or the recover cd (in command prompt from cd) I cannot access the hard drive. The local a-drive or b-drive are the only drive specifications that will work. This is preventing me from repairing the damaged file so I can boot Windows XP from the hard drive. Any help and or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  What happened immediately prior to this. That could be helpful.

What kind of DOS boot disk? What file system are you using on the drive? The screen got HUNG up while COMING out of the screen SAVER. I pressed the power button to restart it and it never came up after that. Also my external modem was answering incoming phone calls, it's never done that before. I'm thinking I MAY have had a power surge but who knows.

I'm not sure what file system the wounded pc is using.

I made the dos boot disk from my XP laptop by formatting a floppy disk with the ms-dos start-up disk option. The boot disk was fat (the only option offered).
If this is a desktop I would reset the CMOS. If nothing else, take battery out for a few minutes, then restart. At this point we don't know if it is hardware or software.

Care to offer a computer or motherboard make/model, system specs, etc., rather than we just guess?

That's not the RIGHT way to copy Favorites from one computer to another.  With IE open, go to File, Import and Export.  Export Favorites, and not the location of the folder to which the export was executed.  Copy that file, take it to the other computer or other USER's logon on the same computer, and then Import it.

Solve : XP and NT hooked up together??

Answer»

Hi,

I've got a question. I've two machines here. One is running XP Pro and the other one is NT workstation. Because i'd like to make the NT one as a backup machine for my XP. I'd like to connect them TOGETHER. I haven't done this yet and probably shouldn't be posting before trying it out. Anyway, Just wanna check with you expert people FIRST so My question is would it be alright to do that?

Thank you in advanceSure you can hook them together. Are you plannning on using a router, a crossover cable or what? What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Thanks GX1_MAN for your reply.

That's great. What i'm trying to accomplish here is that since the NT workstation COMPUTER hasn't been used MUCH for a while and thinking that i may use it to back up some FILES from my XP laptop. So, it's Mainly for a backup purpose.

ThanksIt should work nicely. Have fun.

Solve : Laptop reboots in vicious circle?

Answer»

When it boots, you will get MUCH more than a command prompt. You will get a fully functioning operating system - file manager, web browser, office apps, etc. You will have to "look around" a bit because it is not Windows - the file structure is different, the commanad prompt commands are different, but you will be able to do it.
I don't really have the time to search now... You have to find an adapter for a laptop hdd (2.5") to a 3.5" bay (for a desktop computer). After that, the method I consider "the most easy" ("easier" it's the word? Or "easiest"? I don't know...) is to move your laptop hdd to a desktop computer and to do there the backup and try to find viruses and spyware on your laptop harddisk.
If you HEAR now for the firs time of Linux it will be a little more DIFFICULT to use it.
If you have a DSL access line, you may use without regret the http server to download the ISO file, it is a very good internet connection. But, large files still last a lot of time to download. For example, I have a connection (at work) of 512 KBps-1MBps (that's more than your connection could offer) and still took me 5-6 hours to download 700 MB. And the transfer speed depends also on the remote server network speed also, not just yours (the transfer speed will be the the smallest transfer speed between your computer and that server). I'll rather sugest you to find a magazine with a linux live cd or linux live iso image on it's cds. From there is simple: copy the file on hdd and create a new cd from that iso file. If you have to recover your data quickly, use the "Windows" method - move the hdd to a windows machine and let Unix/Linux be a hobby for some other time.

How would I do if I would have the same problem:
1) place the laptop hdd into another computer, as the second hdd; that second computer has to have Windows XP
2) backup the important data; if there are secure files (encrypted files) than do a backup of the full laptop harddisk. That is the most important step. Don't do anything to that hdd if you don't have a backup! You can loose all your data...
3) try to find viruses on laptop hdd
4) try to find spyware on laptop hdd
5) If you have the backup of your hdd, try to restore windows xp on that laptop hdd. How? Place the hdd back in the laptop. Boot with Windowss xp boot cd and choose repair option (don't ask me how... find a book, ask a "small expert" - but be sure he/she is an windows recovery expert. I don't know how to use windows xp repair options... I should know, but I don't know ).
If it doesn't work the repair, reinstall windows (with no repair) over the "old" windows... But I don't recommend you, it is possible to mess the things more than they were.
If you mess something up, use your backup to restore your laptop hdd. You have to be very carefull with your backup, to not destroy it.

If you have the backup of your hdd (be sure you have it and it's "ok") you have more chances to repair your data. If you don't do a backup, you have only ONE chance to recover your data. And only ONE!
Tell us your option, and also if you solved the problem.
If you don't understand a single THING of all of that, ask! It's your data we are "playing" with.Sorry for the DELAY in replying.  I've had some broadband DSL issues as of late and put the Compaq repair on the back burner.   As an update, I did order an USB laptop HDD enclosure for $10 from the internet.  If anyone is curious, I priced a similar layout, selling for $19.99 plus tax (on sale from $39.99), at a major computer products retailer that I like to shop at [I won't mention names, but there is an acronym in it's title].

Since I'm not brave enough to experiment with Linux, I'll go with Viking's advice.  I am curious about Linux, though!  GX1 mentioned that Linux would just boot up to a windows-like environment which sounds like it is what I need to jumpstart my Compaq.  I am just scared to lose all the data on the Compaq, which is why I am not going with Linux, just to be on the safe side.  With that said, I will hook up the Compaq's HDD inside the enclosure, attatch it to a USB port on a working computer, then run anti-virus software on the USB HDD.  I downloaded the program ewido, which I like a lot!  Would that program be sufficient enough to check the hard drive?Ewido checks for trojans, hihjackers, worms and some spyware.  If that's not the problem, Ewido is not the solution. Keep us posted on your progress.

Solve : User Account Issues?

Answer»

Hi, ok whenever I log onto my Account on XP it seems to take forever for my STARTUP programs to load.  However when I get onto the other account on XP, everything loads up fast.

Why is it doing this or what can I do to fix it.  I have ran spyware scans, antivirus, defragment, diskcleanup.

Any suggestions?Ahol:

Try checking the running processes to see if there are any differences between your main user account and the others:

1. Press Ctrl, Alt, DEL together one time to open the Windows Task Manager.
2. In Windows Task Manager, choose the Processes tab.
3. Click the Image Name button at the TOP of that column to sort the process names alphabetically.
4. Write all the process names down.

Now log off your main user account and log on with the other account and check the processes there to compare.  Write down the ones that are in your main user account but not in the other user account and post a reply here so we may look them up for you.  It's probable that those processes are linked to the cause of the slower boot time, though there are many other possible causes.

Doc<---- Is waiting for a reply so he may look up the processes and find what program or virus is the cause.

<----- Has fallen asleep.  Pls wake him up if a reply arrives.
Z Z Z Z ZI think the ahol is not coming back.   Yeah, i think i was just dreaming that he would!

Darn I was hoping we would get rid of that kind by making registrations necessary...

Solve : Can't double click icon's?

Answer»

Hello first let me say i think this site is great however I am quite new to this...

My son put on a BACKGROUND that i didnt want so i removed it however now when my pc LOADS it still shows it briefly same when it shuts down I looked for it in the start up but do not see it there. How do i prevent this from happening?

Since he did this i can no longer double click my icons on my desktop i now have to RIGHT click to open them. How do i switch it back so that I can double click? I have Windows 98.

thankyouWhile trying to find your answer, I myself messed up my computer with the right-click thing. Then I fixed it. Go to Start>Control Panel>Mouse
There should be something about primary and secondary mouse buttons. It might have a different name in Windows 98. (I am running Windows XP right now. )
If Windows 98 does not have this option, then you should look for something similar in the mouse options.

Other than that, if you have passwords on your computer, go into the default user and change the background from there.
I hope that helps you. Once again, I am running a Windows XP computer and I do not have access to a 98 right now. So look for something similar.Hello

thankyou i played around with it and managed to fix it however it was not in properties of the mouse but i went to active desktop then customize my desktop and in folder options and customize. It worked!

Now for the old wallpaper i tried to remove it is still showing in the selections fo wallpaper in customize my desktop even though i thought i removed it from the pc i cant however delete it from the list any idea's?

thanx again for your helpTry setting your background to 'None' then click 'Apply' & 'OK'.
Then re-boot & set the background to your choice.
If your Son, (I have 2 ) downloaded a background that you don't want on your computer, search for the file with the 'Search' function & delete it.Not sure if it will help this specific issue, but it's a good thing to do anyway. Run a Disk Cleanup. Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup ... Run it. When the box comes-up and has CHECK boxes, I would say to check everything EXCEPT for the Recycle Bin. Click ok, followed by ANOTHER ok, and let it go through. This will help you later with space and other things.

Solve : lnk files are not working..?

Answer»

I'm not really sure what happened, but all my programs will not work on my computer. Most show the extensions as .lnk and when trying to OPEN a program it says it cannot be found. Using Open With and searching out the program's .EXE gets a few of them to work but you have to do so everytime you want to use the program. GOING to the actual .exe file and double clicking it makes it fade out gray and it will not work. No icon images are working either.

I looked this up and found it this means that my exe's are BROKEN somehow or some type of problem with the registry. I did a virus scan with McAfee and a spyware scan with AdAware, a few things were found but cleaned or removed. Still nothing works

I guess what I want to know is how do I fix this? How can I get my programs running correctly again?

Thanks in ADVANCE for any help or insight anyone can give me.Thank you thank you!! Thanks a million times   Everything is working now and I can stop pulling out my hair. Thank you

OK, so it is just taking a long time to get the the desktop (where all the icons are located) so you can start using the computer.  Your hard drive may be getting full, or you may have too many programs trying to start when you turn on the computer, or it may be a setting in the BIOS, or a virus.

Has the computer gradually become slower to start, or did this happen all of the sudden?  If it happened suddenly, what change did you make just before the slow down (did you install a NEW Windows update, a new program, a new drive or expansion card)?

Sorry for all the questions.  Perfect and i have to figure out the cause before we can propose a solution.

Thanks eveyeone for the tech support. I took the info and went through some steps. The answer lyed in my scanner that was reinstalled around the same time. It turns out to be a Hardware problem. This older scanner as problem fitting in. After I unplugged each external device one at a time and powered up the scanner was the one that caused the problem. My next step is to reinstall it the rightway with any updates and ofcourse check with Microsoft on the hardware compatabilty part. My description of the problem was poor, but with help from this site I got the idea to try some basic moves and it worked. Thanks to everyone for the help, Steve.

Solve : MSInfo32 problem?

Answer»

Hi,
Only a part of Software Environment, i.e. Windows UPDATES is displayed by my msconfig32 (in Win98SE).
- My msinfo32.exe is v4.10.2222 of 5-5-99, 140KB.
- Accompanying msinfo.inf (32 KB) and msinfo32.ini (0 KB!) are of 22-12-99.
How can I REGAIN full FUNCTIONALITY of Msinfo32.exe, so that Hardware Resources and Components branches are also seen?
Under Tools tab there is only DirectX diagnostics available.
It's likely that this problem existed from the very beginning.

Solve : how to trigger a script to run at a certain time?

Answer»

Hi,

I've got a question here. I have a visual basic script that does a thing i want it to on my XP Pro machine. Is there a way of controlling the execution of the script like 2 minutes after a user is logged onto the computer.

Thank you in advance and look FORWARD to hearing from youYou MIGHT try putting a shortcut to your script in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder. That should kick off your script at startup no matter who logs on.

For the two minute WARNING, try using a WScript.Sleep 120000 statement at the BEGINNING of your script. You may have to adjust the time parameter (milliseconds). Many factors affect the Windows startup.

Hope this is helpful. 8-)
Great, that works. Thank you, Sidewinder

Solve : WMP porblem help plz?

Hey i was trying to put music into the windows movie maker and im getting it off a cd, and when i try to upload it in there i get this error

The file C:\Documents and Settings\William\My Documents\Track06.cda is not a supported file type, and it cannot be imported into Windows Movie Maker.

I was wondering if i could change the cda to something diffrent so it would work any help would be great thanks.

crap i put wmp sorry about thatGo to this site
http://www.audiotool.net/download.htm
and download ease audio converter, its a trial version but can convert any audio file type to any audio file type.the .cda file is only a shortcut to the LOCATION of the music file on the DISK. dont bother trying to convert the .cda files to mp3 or wav files as the music files are usually already wav files.

use a cd ripping tool to convert the music files on your cd to wav files on your hard drive. then try putting them inot movie maker.

cdex is a freeware utility that can do this job well but perhaps not as fast as some of the others that ARNT free. just google cdex to find itWindows Movie maker supports the following audio files:

.wav, .aif, .aiff, .aifc, .SND, .mp3

Make sure your audio file is converted to one of these file formats and use the "Import audio or music" menu link WITHIN Windows Movie Maker.

Solve : i cant run, install win xp os to my new hdd...?

Answer»

hi there...
can u help me figure out whats WRONG with my installation...

i bought 1 maxtor 40gb hard disk. first, i tried to backup my old files from my old hdd. what i did is, is connect my new hdd to the primary slave ide, and power cable while my old one is connected to the primary master and power cable. but when i started the backup i cant detect my new hard disk, isn't it in the backup wizard there is portion there that will ask you where do i want to backup my files? but the browse window couldnt find my new hard disk installed, only the floppy drive.

then... i went to the control panel and click the system icon and selected the device manager, then i point to the hardware, and surprisingly my new maxtor hdd is detected there and said its working properly.

then... i decided to just install win xp OS to my new maxtor hdd. first i removed the old hdd and TRANSFER my new hdd from the primary slave to the primary master and power cable then i reboot my computer and then press "del" to go to the bios/cmos, i have seen like this:

primary master   [NONE]
primary slave     [none]
secondary master [samsung cd-rom]
etc...

does it means my system cant detect my new hdd?

though im so confused i continued installing the OS...what i did is reboot the and insert the Win xp installer, i made a partition on the c: drive and started the NTFS installation. after, it says something like "the winxp installation is successful. your computer will reboot in 10 secs. if you want to reboot press enter... after your computer reboots it will continue to windows setup." but i didn't press enter i just wait... but then, when its done rebooting it started to the windows setup again..

i really dont know whats wrong, i hope you can help me about this matter... thank you!!

jazzysexxyjazzy.... Wow ...After reading your post I'm confused ........
I am assuming that you have removed or disconnected your existing HD .....
I would try this .....
Install the new maxtor , with its jumpers set to master .......
Connect it to the primary IDE cable using the connector on the end .
Plug in the 4 pin power connector ....
then reboot the pc and go into the bios and set the boot to cd- rom as 1st .
Now open the cd-rom and put in the original M/S XP disk in .....
Reboot and if your xp cd is bootable it should format the drive for you and then load .

dl65  hi thanks for your quick reply...

ok...
i didn't removed or disconnected my new hdd... but as u said i started the operation all over again. i connected my new hdd to the primary master ide cable (which goes to the last) then pin the 1st power connector. i turn on my computer and go on to the bios to change the first boot onto the cd-rom drive, then i restart my pc. then, the windows setup pop up.... i continued formatting, and making partition into the c: drive and then when the win xp setup was successfully installed it reboots and then it started to the windows setup again.

i tried to removed the win xp installer from the cd-rom but it says no operating system installed...

then, i restarted it again and go on to the bios and i wonder why ive seen like this:

primary master [none]
primary slave [none]
secondary master [samsung cd-rom]
etc...

is there something wrong with my hard disk?

jazzyok if i will add it as a slave, how can i browse it window xp?
does window xp will display 2 hard drives in my computer?

jazzyok...
i will try it later when i got home...

thanks for your help...
til next TIME..hehehe

Solve : Computer Suddenly Reset?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a little problem with my computer and I was hoping somebody here could help me. (I believe this is the correct place for this but I am not entirely sure it is. Sorry if it isn’t)

Here’s what happened, I was on the internet doing nothing I don’t normally do, and all of the sudden my computer screen WENT blank and my computer reset. As windows was opening back up I noticed that it was doing so quite slowly, at least slower then it usually does. Once it opened up I went to Internet Explorer to see if I could find out maybe what happened to my computer and it took about 2 minutes to open (It usually opens right away) I tired to open some other programs thinking it might have been IE that screwed up but everything seemed to open very slowly, but they eventually did. When IE did finally open up it wouldn’t go to any web pages. The internet for this computer is hooked up by a wireless router so I went to another computer in the living room which is hooked up by the same router to see if the internet was out there as well, and it was. So after a few attempts to get it to work I had to call my ISP, and they told me what to do to fix it. They said that the modem was fine but the router wasn’t recognizing the modem. Anyway, the internet (on both computers) was FIXED and the computer that was acting funky started to run normally again.

But this is what confuses me. My internet has gone out before but my computer has never reset or acted weird because of it. But is that what happened this time? Is it even possible for that to make my computer run weird?

Or is it just an odd coincidence that the router happened to go out when my computer reset and there is something else wrong with my computer?

I have an eMachines running on Windows XP Home (SP1)
AMD Athlon XP 1788 MHz
1GB DDR Ram
Nvidia GeForce4 MX 440
60 GB HDD

The router I use is a Microsoft 802.11b wireless router

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.Spuz:

Possible causes:

* Power surge or brown out.  A lamp or light fixture dimming or getting brighter might indicate this.

* Power supply problem.  Either too many devices have been added to the system, or the power supply is starting to fail.  Fix: Have a computer repair shop replace the power supply with one with greater wattage.

* Dust.  Yes, dust inside the computer case can cause the system to overheat and even short out the system. Fix: Turn off the system open the case and blow the dust OUT of the case using a can of anti-static compressed air.

* Overheating.  Is the case warm to the touch?  Fix: Check the fans inside the case and the power supply (but NEVER open the power supply, as this may harm or even kill you, even if it is unplugged).  If they have stopped working replace them or replace the power supply.  Blow the dust out of the vents for the fans and out of the case.  Add more fans if NEEDED.

* Hardware device going bad and causing the system to reboot to protect the motherboard.  Have a computer repair shop figure out what device is bad, by using a multi-meter or by swapping parts out, and replace it.

* A virus may also cause the problem.  Rebooting would allow it to make changes to your system so it may do its dirty work, like stealing your credit card number, passwords, etc.  Solution: Install a good anti-virus program and keep it updated weekly.

Blessings to you,
Doc

Solve : LOST PROGRAMS INSTALLED?

Answer»

I was having a problem with my Windows XP Office Professional, so I deleted the program and then REINSTALLED it.

This is what has occured.

1.From Internet Explorer, I cannot FIND where the program has installed.

2.I searched for Office, Word, Excel, but search cannot locate the program.

3.I maintained the short cut icons on my desktop, and when I click on them, the program opens.

4.When I right click on the icon, and select properties (to see where the program is) the area is "grayed out" no selection possible.

5.I have searched the start menu, I have even run"msconfig" but cannot find where the program is.

6.I opened "Control PANEL" and selected add/remove programs, and it does show that Office Pro is there.

7.I went to "start" "programs" and it is not there.

I can't think of any other place to look, the program is working but cannot be seen in Windows Explorer or anywhere else???\

I wouldn't have a problem, unless you delete the icons. Try and look for the programs in the directory. Perfect Agent52   .....Well it should be in the path .......
C:\Programs\Microsoft office\Office10\Excel   or something similar ...... unless you directed it to some other folder .

Solve : HTML Help feature (F1) does not work?

The F1 Help function does not work for Windows Visual Basic 6.0, as well as for Windows Media Player, and even Internet EXPLORER. I get either "ACTION cancelled" or "The page cannot be displayed" in the right pane. (Windows XP proffesional, SP2)

I've found this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892675/
"HTML Help features may not work after you install security update 896358 or security update 890175", which most likely is the cause.
However, I can't get my help for Visual Basic up and running again. I've patched the registry, as suggested in the article, but without any luck.

I did try to re-install Visal Basic & MSDN library (with no results), but found out that also Mediaplayer (V9) & IE6 have the same symtoms.
Besides, according the article from Microsoft, this seems to be the "expected" behaviour of the security patch. I could try to remove these security patches, but rather not. The article seems to indicate a supported workaround, just I can't get it to work.

Solve : outlook express wont connect?

Answer»

I have my e-mail scanning off and deleted that entry but outlook still will not come upaclambert
Quote

I use ccleaner, adaware, Microsoft antispyware, spyware blaster, ewido and Norton and they come up pretty clean.  Nothing that doesn't get FIXED.  I also just ran ADSspy.
I just went back and reviewed your answers........ When you ran all these scans your list ....... What do you mean by pretty clean ? thats not a very definitive answer .......
When you did the scans , did you RUN them from the safe mode ?
Did you have the SYSTEM RESTORE turned off ...... trojans love to hide in there and then if you use it ...the system becomes reinfected.

How about hummoring us and go into safe mode and then run scans with .....
CCLeaner , M/S antispyware , Ewido and finally Norton.
Before you run these scans please ensure that these apps have any AVAILABLE updates ........
Once they have finished , you should be able to report that your system is clean.

Are you able to receive Email from any other service or is Yahoo your only mail provider ?

Solve : Adminstrative Rights disappeared?

Answer»

I have a personal computer running Windows 98.  I am the only user, nothing else is connected.  I have always been able to download windows updates, but for some reason now when I try to do a windows update or the SBC updates I get a message saying I must be logged on as the user with administrative rights.  I don't know why it changed.  I've searched for someplace to show myself as the administrator, but all I can find is instructions for newer windows operating systems than 98, and info that all users are administrators on windows 98.

Can someone help me fix this, please?I still have this problem!  I can't do any Windows updates, or SBC antivirus scans, etc.   melstepp......  I was just reading your previous posts and I noticed you said that you cannot run your AV ........ Is it possible that you have a virus in your system ?
Lets try and see ........ GO to this site ..... http://housecall.trendmicro.com/    and click on scan now .

Report the results please

dl65  Hello, I'm having the same problem on XP I went to the link you provided and it cant run a scan because I don't have Java2 Runtime Environment installed. That's exactly one of the THINGS I need Admin priviledges for.  I can't install any programs or printers.

What now?

Thanks, Jim okrobie..... It would be less confusing if you had started your own thread....but never mind ......... if you go into the control panel ......click on User accounts ....... how many show up there ?
BTW is this your pc and are there any other users ?
dl65  Sorry about that.

I have 3 plus guest plus the invisible Administrator account  All 3 of the users that show in the control panel show as being in the administrators group but none have priviledges.  ...and neither does Administrator.

Yes, this is my PC and there are no other users. The only reason I have multiple accounts is that I was trying to create new admin's to see if they had rights.

Thanks
okrobie.... when did this start ?    Did the other users have Admin privledges?

dl65  I'm embarrased to say that it started several months ago but I didn't persue it because I didn't need to install anything.

PS look at my previous post. I added more of my answer. okrobie.....  Ok ....try this reboot into safe mode ( repeatedly tap the F8 key as it STARTS to restart .......) when in safe mode click on start /control panel / User accounts ......... and see if you can create a new account with full admin rights .......
Has any of the other users been playing around in there .......
Let us know if you can .

dl65
okrobie.....  And did you delete any of the users you created or any others?

dl65
I did delete one that I created called "Printers" that was to see if I could create a user who could install printers.

OK I'll be back in a min after safe mode. How about posting a SCREEN shot .........

dl65

Well, the new user Test" didn't have any admin rights either. Here is the screenshot.\:
dl65, had a long day. Hafta fold it up for now.  Catch you tomorrow.

Thanks a million, JimGo into the one that has the chessmen as the icon ....... and make sure that its set on computer admin ...as opposed to limited ........... then exit shut down and then LOG in as the admin. ( the password protected one ) then try and go to M/S updates and see if you have any luck .

We are wanting to create a batch file that will search through all the profiles on a workstation (in c:\documents and settings).  And, if it ever FINDS a file named VersionA.exe, we want to replace it with a new file named VersionB.exe.

I've seen a number of batch file examples.  But, I've not seen many dealing with file management.

Any hints/tips?  All help would be greatly appreciated.  Thx - CliffBatch FILES live in the DOS forum. sidewinder will find you there. He is the resident expert.

They loaded a new XP Home from one they bought using my number and it keeps crashing.  I can't reload windows or run scannow /sfc because I have no CD.[/size]Try the below link. It contains all the information you need to replace Microsoft products including a Microsoft Windows XP CD.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;326246Thank you - I called, GAVE them some numbers from my CD folder and $29.96 and they are sending me a new CD.  I guess I shoudl memtion this cost to the computer shop people who broke my original.  I have to take my computer BACK again today because when I boot it up Windows goes into an unending reboot cycle.   It may have somethng to do with my CD code being USED with their new CD.

Solve : How to C 400GB when moving HD to 2nd IDE connecter?

Answer»

I have an ASUS SOCK-A ATX A7V133A VIA133A motherboard, and 2 HD's.  The first is a 80GB Seagate for my operating system.  The second is a 400GB Seagate for my data.  Both HD's are on the same ribbon cable in a master/slave combo and connected to the Primary IDE connector.  My 2 DVD players are connected to the SECONDARY IDE connector on the mobo.  The Primary and Secondary Ata-100 IDE connectors are open.  I have Windows XP Pro-SP2.

The second/data HD is broken down into 4 partitions (for ease of maitenance), and each is roughly 100GB.  The first partition is primary, and NTSF.  The second partition is an Extended Primary, with 3 logical primaries in it.  I've attached a PICTURE that shows the details in case I'm missing something or explaining it wrong.  Everything works fine right now.

I was told that I can have better performance if I move the data HD to the another IDE connector on the mobo.  I tried connecting the data HD to the Primary ATA-100 IDE connector, but Windows would only recognize roughly the first 200GB (the first 2 partitions).  I put the data HD back in the master/slave combo and I can see all 4 data partitions.

What do I need to do so that I can move the data HD to another IDE connector and see 400GB?  The ASUS manual says I can have up to 8 HD's.  I can reformat/redo the data HD as I'm only using 150GB between all of the data partitions.  Will I really notice an improvement?  Is it worth the hassel?
timrob........ Quote

Everything works fine right now.
Then if your happy with the way it works ...run with it ....

Quote
Is it worth the hassel?
Probably not .....

Thats just my opinion ........others may have a differant one .

dl65  I use the HD to record my TV shows.  I thought I would have better performance(less pix'ing) if I tried this.  The recording of the show is fine, it's the playback.  There's other things I can try on the Hauppauge 350 card, but this is what I'm most FAMILIAR with and wanted to try first.I forgot to mention, it takes FOREVER for the computer to boot up.  If I move the data HD to Primary ATA-100 IDE connector, it boots up in about 30 seconds (a heck of a lot quicker), but like I said, I can't see the the 4 partitions.
