Solve : clock of Windows XP - help?

Answer»

Hello,

I use windows XP.
Sometimes, the clock of the system
goes back one hour, and I am forced
to set it again and again. What can it be?

thanks,
Michael.coquelicot..... Is it always exactly 1 hour ?

double click on the time and when the DATE and time properties opens click on the Internet time tab....... then make sure there is a tick MARK in the box in front of ......Automatically synchronize with the Internet Time server. Click apply and ok........

DL65  Thank you.

In fact, it SEEMS that the automatic synchronisation is the
cause of the problem. I disable it.
Since you SAY that synchronization seems to be causing the problem, you might be set for the wrong time zone.

To change time zones, double-click your clock, and select the 'Time Zone' tab.
Select your time zone from the drop-down menu and click enter.

Solve : Temporary Intenet Files?

Answer»

G'day all, I'm new to this Internet. Running Windows 98, noticed that the Temporary Internet Files folder contains about 80MB of data, JPG's, bmp's etc. Can I simply delete these and not affect the operation of the COMPUTER. I desperately need the extra storage space. You can delete all but the text files without harm. Deleting the text files will cause internet passwords to not be remembered, so you'd have to reenter the passwords. But that's a small price to pay in exchange for... 80 MB??? Wow... a useful tool for cleaning all the junk off ur computer would be to download CCleaner (or Crap Cleaner). it deletes all temporary file folders and it can also delete unused registry entries. (u would be surprised as to how MUCH data gets used for temporary use. i THINK the last time i scanned with ccleaner i had 160mb's of crap)

u can download CCleaner from here HTTP://www.ccleaner.com/Even better, a program that comes with Windows:
Click START, then PROGRAMS, then ACCESSROIES, then SYSTEM TOOLS, and find Disk Cleanup.
Select the things that you want deleted, (be sure Temporary Internet Files is selected), and then click OK, and the files will be deleted for you.
What comes with Windows won't get the job done right. CCleaner is an excellent tool and works. You know, just before I followed the link in my email to this page (because of a notification) I knew that someone would say something like that.

(I don't really see what people have against Windows, but I think I will start another forum to find out about that)Ccleaner cleans up more than Windows Disk Cleanup and it's 1000 times faster.
I like Windows, some of them anyway.

Solve : Explorer.exe Error?

Answer»

Everytime i go to START my laptop regularly it wont let me.  It gives me an error saying

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application.  I ran Hijack this in Safe Mode and SPYWARE Doctor Pro.  I cant install AVG PRO Becuase it wont let me install in safe mode.  All this still gives me the error.  Can anyone help me?
google.ca is full of information.
and could u please perhaps post UR hijack this log?

A COMMON Cause Of The 0xC0000005 Error:

The error 0xC0000005 is generated by an illegal "memory access violation". This can be caused by anything from faulty RAM, an incorrect/corrupt device driver, poorly written/updated software and more commonly under Windows XP Service pack 2, malware/adware installations.

Usually you get this error message when performing a specific task, and if that happens you need to check the corresponding 3rd party's website/support department to SEE if they are aware of the problem

..a while back Symantec Antivirus caused the 0xC0000005 error with an additional message about a file called SAVRT.SYS . A simple software update to the Symantec Antivirus cured the problem.yeah...homer right. If you can also see if you can download a memory testing program then burn it onto a CD then utilize it to see if your RAM is faulty.

Solve : 100% CPU usage at Spoolsv.exe?

Answer»

There's a yellow question mark over something called 'RAID-control unit'

I'll try to re-install the printer completly...While your printer is uninstalled, try it with the spooler turned off as well.
Still trying to figure if this is a printer/spooler problem or malware? The printer is now uninstalled but I still have the same problem. I'm starting to think the freezing of my PC and the spoolsv.exe process has nothing to do with each other?2) Download, install, update & run Ewido.
1) Do a search on your computer for spoolsv.exe, it should be in the system32 directory.
3) Check your control panel>printers for pending print jobs.Ewido found a whole lot of infected objects which I removed.

And for the spoolsv search...

I actually got 4 results? Is it safe to remove those that are not in the system32 folder?

I had no pending printer jobs.I'd leave them for the moment.
A question... is your windows fully up to DATE?YesWhen you uninstalled the printer did you also disable the spooler in services?
How long has this been happening? There has been a problem with a recent microsoft update.Yes I've tried to disable spooler in services when I uninstalled.

I'm not SURE about how long it's been going on, a couple of months I think Quote

Yes I've tried to disable spooler in services when I uninstalled.
Did the 100% usage stop then?Yeah it did But the computer froze after some time thoughAn obscure post at another forum that fixed this guy's identical problem.
Quote
* Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services and stop the Print Spooler.
* Turn off the printer.
* Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS and delete the files there.
* Turn your printer back on and restart the service. Check TASK manager, spoolsv.exe should be at 00%.
Thanks alot! You earn a medal

I still wonder though, what those other 3 spoolsv.exe's are?One is a hotfix from windows.
One is an uninstall for the hotfix from windows.
One is your spoolsv file (system32)
The prefetch one is generated by windows for faster access. (Google Prefetch).Simply uninstall your printer do a virus and spyware scan in safe mode. after that USE Hijackthis to clean your registry a littoe.
Then reinstall your printer.

i had this happen to me alot. Its not a virus in most cases. Just your printer is constantly asking what to do. I dont KNOW what the cause of this is, I Hate it.

It may be a virus though, its just a rare virus that infects your spooler.

This should help though.

Oh oH and if you dont have the latest service pack. Get it because Explorer.exe will do the same thing.

Solve : Booting to DOS?

Answer»

Is there any way to make Windows ME boot into dos when you're unable to load windows? I tried the F8 thing, but it doesn't seem to work. Then I read somewhere tha the F8 thing is only for 98  :-?

I can't load windows and I need to restore system files from a boot disk, but I can't get into DOS. Help please  F8 before the Windows logo starts. Just tap the key a few times as the machine boots.

I'm unclear what you are trying. A WinME start up disk will get you to a command prompt with limited functionality. It's not real DOS, per se,  but that is the closest you will get.I'm getting a "Invalid Sytem Disk" error. I searched around and the solution seems to be to restore Windows Startup disk to fix that.

I tried booting the computer with the startup disk in the A drive, but I get a "Disk I/O error". Does this mean there's something wrong with the startup disk or am I doing something wrong here?Disk I/O error usually is a bad floppy, or a bad floppy cable or a bad connector on the motherboard.

No system disk FOUND can be a failed hard drive, a failed IDE cable or a bad IDE port on the motherboard.

It is unlikely that both went bad at the same time unless the motherboard/BIOS is totally shot.

What happened prior to this? Has anyone been monkeying inside the CASE? What is the computer make/model? How old? Processor? RAM?There were several blue screen errors before it started saying Invalid System Disk. It's a HP Pavillion, very old like maybe 8 years or more, ram is 515 mb.

I confess to mucking around itside of it before, which caused some errors, but never this one.

Also, I took the drive and put it on my computer as a slave and was able to access all the files on it without any PROBLEMS. Does this mean there is something else wrong than just a Windows system file error? It depends what the exact error messages were to help determine the cause.

Did you mess with the BIOS prior to this? What was happening before this started? It was a error that happened sometimes that said it couldn't find the hard drive "No drive detected" or something simular to that. Then if you restarted a few times, it would work. This error started after I tried to change the video card, but ended up putting the old card back in.

Sometimes it would take up to a hour before it would find the hard drive and load right, but it hasn't been that bad for months. It's actually been loading just fine for a long while until this morning.

I never messed with the BIOS though. Before I have this drive formatted and reinstall windows, I need to know if that is even the problem with it. If it's something in the motherboard then I need to know  :-?OK, well if your data is backed up or non-important, then you just reinstall (assuming you have the CD to do that) and it will either work or it won't. If not, you may get some error messages that help with the diagnosis.

If you don't have a Windows CD, that is another issue.

As you cannot get the machine to boot at all, I suspect it is hardware, and that will have to be resolved. Windows does not fix ailing hardware. If you have not been in the BIOS and disabled something, then it looks hardware-ish from here.
Okay, thank you.

I dont have WinME cd, but I guess I'll have to try and buy one.How about some specifics on the machine? It may not be worth what a copy of WinME would cost. There was another error a while ago.. I can't remember what it was now, and someone told me if was probably the bios battery that needed to be REPLACED. Never did get a chance to get a new one.

The one contant, most troublesome error it kept having is to not find the hard drive sometimes.

http://pcworld.about.com/news/Jun212001id53223.htm

This is everything about the computer itself. The only thing changed over the years was a new hd (a Maxtor 60gb) and more RAM.I am in DOS from start up disk and can't EXIT in order to return to windows 98.  Every time I reboot, I continue to stay in start up mode in Dos. Dos tells me I have a missing or corrupted file and wants the command interpreter..what is the name and will this help me return to windows? Quote

Take a chance and replace the CMOS battery first to see what might improve,e specially if you were told to do so earlier. They are cheap and readily available - computer shops, Radio Shack, etc.

Solve : Jerky DVD?

Answer»

Hi,

I have an older eMachine RUNNING Win2K pro. It has 256M of ram. It was playing DVD movie nicely for the longest time using Power DVD. Somehow, I don't know what I did, I think it was after I did a fresh reinstallation of Win 2K, it started playing very jerky    Does anyone know why?

ThanksDid you install the latest video driver after the fresh installation of Win 2K?  Does Device Manager indicate any problems?  Run dxdiag (Start, Run, and enter dxdiag), select the Display tab, and run the tests.  Any problems indicated there?install latest video, graphics(dont ask),and monitor drivers (if not plug and play)The video driver is the same as the working one I have before I reinstalled the OS. I think it is something with the memory setting on the computer but I just don't know hoew to figure where to go to set the right amount of the memory.

ThanksDid you monkey around in the BIOS?No, I didn't touch the BIOS yet. What can I do in the BIOS?

Thanksyou cant do anything in t he bios to correct the problem, but you can try increasing your page file size

My computer PROPERTIES -->Advanced-->performance-->Advanced--> Change

This may help but can cause  your computer to run slower. BUT I BET your Media Player is using a huge amount of CPU Cycles you can see this by ctrl+alt+del = TASK manager

You will see a list of PROCESSES one will be media something. Look under CPU Cycles and see what the number is. If it is high you may need to install the last service pacl for 2kpro.

Solve : WinMediaPlayer 10?

Answer»

I got this green bar at the bottom of .avi files. I can fix it by turning on high-quality mode, but this makes the .avi grayscale. How can I fix this? Win XP Home OEM SP2.

EDIT: Problem also occurs in CREATIVE MediaSource.Major bump. I have tried out a BUNCH of .avi files, but only one has this issue. Again, turning on high-quality fixes it, but makes it grayscale.yeah i have that problem too man, It only happens once in a blue moon so i DONT know what does it or how to get rid of it.

it might be the recording of the AVI.

R0SSFixed it by mistake.

I needed the DivX Codec to use a program (I wanted to extract only the video of a different AVI file), so I installed it. Now, not only is the problem SOLVED, I have a slightly sharper image. That'll teach me to use Windows codecs. :-/

Solve : Can Win XP Pro + Win XP Pro be dual booted??

Answer»

I've installed Windows XP Pro on 2 partitions via PQ Magic 8.0.  Is there a document that describes the steps needed to set this up correctly?  When the computer first turns on, I see the 2 op sys's on the black Windows boot screen, but I can't just choose either option to GO to the desired op sys.  The only way to change op sys's is by hiding the original op sys and making the desired op sys active via PQMagic.  This is an extra step and a pain.

Both boot.ini files are correct.  I did not install Boot Magic which I know can REALLY SCREW things up.  I REINSTALLED everything from SCRATCH, hoping that no install of Boot Magic would solve my problems.  I find plenty of threads on installing Win XP plus some other Win operating system, but nothing on Win XP Pro + Win XP Pro.  I'm willing to start from scratch again, but I'd like to do it correctly this time.

I didn't see anything on http://support.microsoft.com/.  Will I be forced to always manually change the active partition or is my setup wrong?

I use the dual boot system to run different programs.  The second op sys has only limited programs installed on it.Try using Smart Boot Manager.

Solve : blinking scroll lock causing problems?

Answer»

My scroll lock key will randomly blink periodically, but not always.  I generally have the same programs open -- Word, Excel, Firefox, Thunderbird, a .wav player program, a text expander, etc. -- and I have not been able to narrow it down to coming from any PARTICULAR program.  When the scroll lock light is randomly blinking, though, it affects my text expander *and* it affects the spell check in MS Word (at the flash, it LOOKS like it is making an edit to the spell check).

Does anybody have any IDEAS of where I could track down why this light is blinking and how to get it to stop? mmeahan....have you tried a differant keyboard ? It may be as simple as that.

dl65  I'm so sorry -- I have had bronchitis and am forgetting everything.  YES, I bought a brand-new keyboard and it is still blinking.

If anybody could tell me how to troubleshoot this past closing programs and seeing if it helps, I don't mind doing the troubleshooting myself -- I just am out of ideas.

mmeahan......  If you SHUT everything down and then reboot .......... and with nothing open does this still occur?

Solve : Windows hangs when Using Mouse?

Answer»

I built a desktop computer with an ASUS P5WD2 motherboard, Pentium 4 w/HT 3.2 GB CPU, 1GB Corsair XMS DDR2 RAM, 256 MB GeForce 6600 Video Card and Windows XP Pro w/SP2. My PROBLEM is, after using the mouse for approx. 10 min, the screen freezes. I can move the mouse around, but when I try and click on anything, it will not have an effect. I can CTRL, ALT, DEL and click twice on the X and then I regain control of clicking. I have tried 3 different mice, both wireless and plug-in, but it still does not help. Does anyone have an IDEA?. I do not have any known viruses or SpyWare .

Jim Quote

I can CTRL, ALT, DEL and click twice on the X and then I regain control of clicking.
Can you explain this a little more, what x and does your mouse then work properly... for how long?

Have you tried a PS2 mouse yet? When the task manager appears, I have to click on the X in the UPPER right corner of the box twice and then the task manager closes, I then regain control on the page.
I am CURRENTLY using a PS2 mouse.

JimStick with the PS2 mouse, at least until this is sorted out.
Check your mouse settings in your control panel.
Check your mouse in your Device Manager for problems.
Are you the only person who uses this computer?

Solve : Starting programs at user logon screen?

Answer»

At the windows LOGON screen where you can select which user you want to log in as, by pressing win key and U you can start up the  Utility Magager, is it possible to run other programs when you are at the user logon screen or assign a shortcut to a program so that it can be run???What operating system are you talking about?

You have to log in to run any installed programs.Im using XP professional, you can run the utility manager (so the on screen KEYBOARD or the MAGNIFIER) when you are still at the log on screen by using the keyboard shortcut winkey and U, so could you assign a keyboard shortcut to another single exe file to be able to run at login screen? Running actually installed programs would be IMPOSSIBLE I think, but single exe FILES might be possible.See above.

Solve : Help with Program Defaults?

Answer»

I need to make Windows Media Player my default player.  I have clicked the radio button for Windows and manually chosen Window Media Player.  BUT when I CLOSE the window the computer defaults back to the previous choice.  How do I make the change to Windows Media Player "stick"? Thanks in advance for any help! What is the "previous choice?"

Some programs try to keep themselves as the default and will change your settings for you if it DETECTS that it's no longer the default.  You'd have to dig through that program's settings to be sure.Previous choice was AVS DVD Player, which I have removed from my system.  When I click the radio button on the Windows choice or on Windows Media Player, under the media player section of default programs, the computer always reverts back to "use my current media player."  When I try to view live media in IE the media tries to connect, then says "Ready" but when I hit play nothing happens. That may not mean anything's wrong -- Let's say you START out with AVS being the default.  You open up MPlayer, and you see the options "Make MPlayer the default," and, "Use my current settings," which means AVS.  So you click to make MPlayer the default, and the next TIME you look at the settings in MPlayer, it says "Use my current settings" because Media Player IS the current setting.

To verify that it is the default, under the Start --> All Programs menu, one of the first listings will be something like "Default Programs."  Open that up and verify THINGS are associated properly.

Solve : Win XP BOOT INI New SATA Problems?

Answer»

I have a ASUS P4P800 SE MoBo. It has PRI, SEC, IDE channels Capable of 4 Devices. Then it has 2 additional SATA channels. So without  utilising the RAID array...one can have up to 6 seperate IDE Drives be they Hard disks or CD Roms. So My configuration is this PRIMARY IDE has 2 Drives on it Master= WDC 80Gig HHd w/WinME left over on it because it carries all of my old files and games. The Slave is a WDC 100Gig HHd for archives only (No OS on it at all)  SECONDARY channel has a DVD RW alone as the MASTER. Then I have 2 SATA drives a WDC200Gig HHd with Win XP Pro on it as my C:\ and on the other I have a Plextor SATA DVD Writer (Px-7555A) Then I have a PCI SATA card installed that gives me 2 more SATA ports and on that "add in card" I have yet another WDC 160 Gig HHd for archiving Huge DVD files...(.vobs etc...) again No OS on it at all. So in my BIOS I have a total of 4 DISK Dives and 2 DVD RWs a total of 6 devices.
But even though I can select the "order" of the drives in the BIOS then select "3 Boot Priority" devices...the Boot.INI file gets confused.

So my problem is when I rewrite the Boot.INI how do I find out how windows XP gets the "Device ID Number"? Because "MULTI(0)DISK(0)RDISK(0)PARTITION(1)" is automatically seen as the "Primary channel  IDE MASTER" and as a result XP had rewritten the Boot.INI to Default=C:\Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition" Now in the device manager it tells me that my 200Gig XP Drive is "Disk3" but editing the Boot INI to SHOW "Disk3" STILL gives me a  "HAL32" error. Now I can still "Boot up" using a handy utility I have AND...I can even edit the Boot.INI on an NTFS Partition from DOS. (A really cool tool called "EDITBIBI") Now it gets compounded by the fact that if I use the EDITBIBI utility...it sees that same 200gig drive that Windows device mgr calls "Disk3" as "Disk1" I tried both in editing the Boot.INI and none of them will boot off of the 200gig drive that is on the sreial buss. (SATA)  Now its not a SCSI controller so there is no "Lun" in the edit thats needed.  So...how do I properly Identify the "Disk Controller number", the specific "Disk ID Number" so that I can point the NTLR to boot off of the proper Disk?  How do you identify the 2 SATA devices beyond the Standard IDE identifiers for the Pri and SEC IDE Channels? PRI Mas= Device 0 Pri Slave = Device 1 SEC Master = Device 3 SEC Slave is Device 4...beyond that what are the proper SATA Device identifiers? Where does XP Look for those Identifiers? Or...how can I edit the Boot INI to go to the disc with XP on it everytime? Because as soon as it sees the disc with Win ME on it...it rewrites the Boot.INI and I am screwed again. I know eventually I'll get rid of Win ME but certain stuff ALREADY installed on that disc will run while booted into XP! Without that Disc with Win ME on it...the same apps won't run under XP alone.

Solve : Create a batch file to save files from network to local computer?

Answer»

I made a .bat file that SEEMS to do the first stuff correct, but when it comes to finding the network stuff it just can't. Really new to this so be gentle.

This is the code I used...

MKDIR D:\BATCH_BACKUPS\PC-DMIS\PROGRAMS

xcopy X:\PCDMIS PROGRAMS\212 LAYOUT PROGRAMS *.* D:\BATCH_BACKUPS\PC-DMIS\PROGRAMS/y/e

Thanks for any help. If more info is needed please ask me.mkdir D:\BATCH_BACKUPS\PC-DMIS\PROGRAMS

If the directory called programs is all ready there than you don't need to do this everytime you run the bat file. make it once and call it a day.

xcopy X:\PCDMIS PROGRAMS\212 LAYOUT PROGRAMS *.* D:\BATCH_BACKUPS\PC-DMIS\PROGRAMS/y/e

Do you have a network mapped drive called X? Or are you trying to create it when you run the bat file? I think what your after is something like this...

net use X: "\\YOUR SERVER\THE SHARE NAME\*.*" /PERSISTENT:NO

xcopy "X:\PCDMIS PROGRAMS\212 LAYOUT PROGRAMS\ *.*" D:\BATCH_BACKUPS\PC-DMIS\PROGRAMS\*.* /y/e

You may also want to post this in the dos forum.

Thanks SPOILER, I will try this later TODAY.

Any ways did you try microsoft solution?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;302357 Out going email
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813514Yes I have tried all of those things many many times.  Nothing works.Do you have some sort of firewall using that port or any other applications that is using that port. SECOND is your providers SMTP working? How long have you had this problem? Who is your mail provider? The e-mail is through the company who hosts our website.  When they set-up the account with me, they gave me all the information I needed to put into outlook.  It has never worked, I use the WEBMAIL.  I tried contacting them a couple of times with this problem and they tried to figure out what was wrong but didnt find anything.

I tried changing the firewall settings, that didnt work.  Hi all,
I have now found out what the problem was, after checking my setting loads of time I tried
leaving off the 3 in pop3 and that was it , Job done.
I think because it stated :-

Find outing mail server (smtp)              Completed
Find incoming server  (pop3)                Failed

everywhere I just typed that in without thinking    :-?

First of all let me say that I am sorry to hear that you lost all your data.

Now the really disturbing part of your tale of woe is .... If you had the experience to be able to format your computer ....... Why on earth didn't you SAVE your data onto disks or cds........before you wiped the hard drive clean.  You didn't mention which OPERATING system your were using ...but usually when you apply the format command .....a warning comes up on the screen to say that all information on the drive being formatted will be lost ...... "Do you wish to continue"

If you have not used your computer since it was formatted ......there are companies that specialize in data recovery ......  It is very expensive and there are no guarantees that it will be successful.  If you have been using the computer since the format ....the chances of recovering your data is not good .

In the future , remember to back up all important information .

Solve : XP Pro System Restore not working?

Answer»
My Windows XP Pro "System Restore Service"
It used to work fine. I used it for over a year. Then all of a sudden it would tell me to "Reboot the COMPUTER because windows Restore isn't protecting this system" Then Instantly a ERROR would come up "Run a .DLL as an app has failed" and immediatly after that one anoter would come up with "Dr. Watson Post Mortem debugging" as had a problem. And I have SEEN this same description at 2 other forums, but no answers. Oh...if I go into the event viewer and view "system services" it tells me that "the service could not start because the path isn't correct"  Then I go and try to enable it manually and it just keeps giving me " ERROR No.3 System could not find the specified path" And this whole process becomes a "Loop" with the same results over and over again. There was a few times I also got Error No 720. But no specifics on it. Any body familar with this one? What happened needing system restore? What is the computer make/model? What adware/spyrus/virus protection are you using on a regular basis? Any more specifics would be helpful as well.

Solve : Hard Disk Copying?

Answer»
Hi,

I have 4 computers and want all of them to be exactly the same, same SOFTWARE, OS ect… I am wondering if this is possible. This is my plan; I want to load all the software I NEED into one machine then make copies of that setup. Then copy it to the other 3 pc’s. This will save me from having to load all the same software into all the other computers.

All the pc’s have just about the same exact setup. Now I am guessing I can setup a primary hard drive which will be the one I will mirror to all the other pc’s, then put a second hard drive in as a slave and copy the primary hard drive to the secondary hard drive. Then take the secondary drive and use it to copy it to all the other pc’s. Will this work?

If it can, can you tell me what steps I need to take? I read somewhere that this can be done with NORTON Ghost. Btw, I am running windows XP

Thanks! I really appreciate it!
John
Each machine has to be activated with a unique registration code, if you are talking XP. How are you going to do this? Are you planning to run the same Windows license on all machines? BILL Gates says "No,no" to this. Also unless the hardware is identical this probably won't work well, if at all, either.I am doing this for an office a work and they have all the registration codes. I was going to wait to activate them until all computers were loaded, then active each one with the proper key.

I was afraid this was the answer, is there any other way? They don't want to run the software on a server because its really old and wouldn't be able to handle the workload.

thanks for your help!

hi there !
onec  i did that, i mean coped my HD to another PC and everything was ok.
How i did that : U see i used software that could backup and restore full disk.
but unlike other softs, mine contains in itself drivers amd while restoring it selects the proper one.
that is main problem  while OS copiyng + Windows licensence allert, but as much as i understood
u have already solved it. So my solution is Worskstation 9.1 by Acronis(it was quite cheap 1month ago).Microsoft was nice enuph to forsee that you may want to do this ,

Ther is a COMMAND in windows to prepair a system to be copyed its called "sysprep.exe"

Look it up on the MSDN and youll get all the info youll need

bu if the machines are a little differnt run

"sysprep /dif" i thinkalso you can use a program call bootitng to copy the HDDs

http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/

its very easy to use

or Nortan ghost , but thats licnesed

Solve : Outlook restore help needed?

Answer»

Explorer went corrupt on my computer and despite following all instructions to restore it I could not get my computer to start. I decided it's time to upgrade anyway and so I took the drive from my windows ME machine and put it in my XP machine. Everything is accessable from there. I have installed Outlook on my new computer but now I want to restore my old emails. I figured I could copy the files from my old Outlook folder to my new one but everything seems different. I have located a sizeable file called outlook.pst from the windows folder of my old drive but do not have the same folder on my new one.

Please can somebody tell me how I can restore my old Outlook files from my old drive to my new computer? Thank you!
Outlook data files are by DEFAULT stored in the user's Application Data folder, which is a hidden folder.  On Win98/ME, it is under the Windows folder (possible under the Profiles sub folder).  On 2000/XP, it stored under Documents and Settings\username.  Since it's a hidden folder, you need to switch on viewing hidden folders and files in order to view it.

Which version of Outlook are you using?  The method of making the old .pst file your default file varies between versions.Thank you. I'm using Outlook 2000.
Is it the .pst files I have to replace? The only file with .pst I can find is Archive but I don't find any .pst on the new computer running XP.You can probably safely ignore the archive.pst file, unless you know there's something in there that you want.  Transfer the outlook.pst file to WHATEVER location you require - it doesn't have to be in the Application Data tree, that just happens to be the default location.

Then load up Outlook 2000.  Go to File--Open-->Personal folders.  Locate the outlook.pst file and click okay.

Now in Outlook it is really useful if you have the Outlook folder tree open.  If you click on the title that will be saying "Outlook Today" or "Inbox" or "Contacts" DEPENDING on what you're currently viewing, you'll see the folder tree appear.  At the top right, there's a little pushpin icon, which you can click to make the folder tree remain in place.

In the folder tree you will see an entry "Outlook Today" - the current Inbox, Journal, ETC, folders come of this.  You will also see a "Personal folders" tree - that's the outlook.pst file you've just opened.

Now for the totally non-intuitive bit!

Right-click on the Personal folders tree, and choose properties.  At the bottom of the dialog box, you'll see an option "deliver POP mail to this folder" (or something like that).  Tick that box and click okay.

Close and re-open Outlook.

Now the names "Outlook Today" and "Personal Folders" have swapped round.  Right-click on "Personal folders" and click "Close".

That's it.

Solve : Outlook Express folder settings changed at exiting?

Answer»

Hi there,

Not a major problem here, but for someone with borderline OCD, it's ridiculously frustrating. I just reformatted my laptop, and have reinstalled all my old PROGRAMS. Now, THOUGH, when USING Outlook Express, my mail folders and subfolders automatically collapse when I exit. I'm hoping someone will be ABLE to help. All I want to do--it seems so simple--is to keep the folders I've expanded in that state between exiting and re-starting (which happened, as I recall, automatically before the reformatting).

Feel a bit crazy, as there is nothing I can seem to find on the topic online, or in Outlook Express Help, or by  navigating every single tab in the Tools/Options menu.

Thanks in advance,
BDid it used to work the way you describe wanting it to? Out look Express is not the most customizable thing. Quote

Did it used to work the way you describe wanting it to? Out look Express is not the most customizable thing.

Yup, it used to work exactly as I MENTION. I'd have a certain number of frequently-used folders in an expanded view, and some less-frequently accessed folders collapsed, and whenever I closed out of the program, the settings were saved and I could re-open with folders appearing as they were before exiting.

Thanks for the attention.

Solve : Keeps shutting down.?

Answer»

I am using Windows ME. I have a problem that began just over a week ago and has got worse. Now I can't get past logging in.

My computer began to randomly shut down and refused to restart for half an hour. If I attempted to restart before that it just indicated that it was busy, with both the green and amber lights showing as steady - not flashing.

I didn't get a chance to run ad-aware, spybot, or avg or to defrag when it stopped working. I cannot do any more than start it up.

In safe mode it has just also shut down, although it was on for about an hour before doing so.

Please can you offer any help?

Thank you. If you can run hijack this and post a LOG here, but i have a feeling it may be your hardware, your hdd maby, but dont go on that till you know moreWhat are the implications of it being the hardware? If I had it repaired, would all my files still be saved?

Also, can I run hijack this (which I think I installed) in safe mode, or do I have to be logged in properly?

Thanks for your reply. As long as the hard drive is not the culprit, the files are secure.

Hijack this can be run in safe mode. It will not be quite as helpful, but it is a start. Thanks again for the replies.

I can't locate Hijack This. I tried running Spybot (for what it's WORTH) and it just shut down part way through again. That will no doubt be the pattern for running ad-aware or anything else.

Anything else I can try?

Does a hardware problem mean sending off the computer to be fixed, or returning to factory settings, please?

Thank you. Give it a try:

Thank you. i looked up some of the progs starting on you computer bassed on the list you POSTED and i can only see that could cause problems and thats MPREXE.EXE, i is  said that this is a program for mixed networks IE: a network wich has maby a MAC or a Novel computer runing asd well as your windows machine

SO it probley shouldent be running and could be a treath,  it could be a fake file pretending to be a legit program , or it could be the real one , and it could be not working and making your computer crash

If you now how to use MSconfig , i would sugest you stop this program on start upOh sorry your on Windows ME... you dont have MSconfig...

youll need to use Regedit

and youll have to find

HKEYLOCALMACHINE>SOFTWARE>MICROSOFT>WINDOWS>CURRENTVERSION>RUN

and in that key you should see MPREXE.EXE

and if you comment that out by Editing it and Adding ; to the start of the name , it wont work on the next bootDoes my being on a local area network play any part on that file you think looks suspicious?

I'll try to follow the instructions on your last post to see what happens.

Thank you.Have run Regedit but am unsure of what to let it clean up.

Can't find HKEYLOCALMACHINE>SOFTWARE>MICROSOFT>WINDOWS>CURRENTVERSION>RUN

Solve : i am po at XP?

Answer»

Ok, I finally got XP and thought that it was a good thing. Well my network was set up seamlessly between two computers on a simple network. One computer stayed on all the time and downloaded torrents and hosted a website wil the other did as it pleased. The 'torrent' computer had a shared flder that it would PLACE the downloaded files in so that the 'FREE' computer could accses them as it pleased. This was fine, the hardware firewall protected the network from intrusions and everyting was fine and dandy. Well I got XP and the person controling the free computer does not want to intall it. I installed it on the torrent computer and it was fine untill... The free computer tryed to accses the torrent computer. Initialy the torrent computer had 2k sp4 on it and it was upgraded to XP without hassle. But now the free computer cannot accses the torrent computer over the network becasue XP on the torrent computer blocks the connection. I need to know how to allow EVERYONE I mean EVERYONE on the local WORKGROUP channel to accses this computer. I am ASKING this here becasue I dont have $10.00US a minute to ask Microsoft about it.Are you running XP Pro or Home? If pro, open Windows Explorer->Tools->Folder Options->View, the last option on the bottom, Use Simple File Sharing. If this is disabled, you have to create a user for other PEOPLE to log in with or else they won't have access. If this option is enabled anyone can access your shared folders without logging in.

Are there any firewalls running? Try to disable them and see if that makes a difference.

Yeah that did do something. Now when the other computer attempts to acsses the computer it asks for a username and password I dont know what one.

Solve : how can i mod the "welcome" screen??

Answer»

i was just wonderin if there is any way to change the appearance of the welcome screen, the default welcome screen is too high contrast for my liking, hence the fact i use the "classic" theme, which reminds me of another question: how do i modify the windows XP theme? i cant modify it like i can windows classic, which is really annoying. if anyone knows anything about either of my questions, please post... thanks...try this LINK http://www.majorgeeks.com/BootSkin_d4072.html
Appearance | BootSkin 1.05

there you can changethanks man   that high contrast CRAP is annoying at times... especally when i first wake up and my eyes havnt adjusted yet, and then it pops up and nearly blinds me... now all i need to do is FIGURE out how to modify the xp theme...

EDIT: i forgot to mention, when i DL'd it, it was going at like 450k a second, through my wireless CARD, but it only took like 2 seconds to DL so i cant say if the speeds would have held... even still, i have NEVER seen this card go that fast on this connection, or my home connection...

Solve : Wireless Network Config?

Answer»

I just got my first wireless router and I've got the network all set up, but I can't connect to it via laptop. The laptop has a Dell 1390 wireless CARD and when I try to connect to the network it says its connected and the router says it's connected, but the laptop hangs when aquiring network access and won't go any further... any ideas?Did you run the network setup wizard?Yes, and i'm using the Dell WLAN card UTILITY not windows default to manage the wireless connection. Is the router set up For DHCP or are you manulay configuring it?The router is DHCP with my ISP and then I manually assign IP's to the computers within the network.Have you tried enable the DHCP on your router? On all computers, open network connections->LOCAL Area Connection->property,
in Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) click on Properties then set Obtain IP ADDRESS automatically and Obtain DNSserver address automatically. This should work well.Generally When i set up small networks i make em like this

                                                                       /--------Computer1 DHCP Client
(Internet)-----(Router(Internet DHCP Client ))     |
                   (Router(LOCALNET DHCP Server))-{
                                                                       \-------Computer2 DHCP Client

Also when i set up a Wireless network i always turn off all the Security(WEP/WAP) Get all the computer connected , and then i turn on the Security and reconfigure the computers, i find this to be the easyest way,

and always have a computer you can connect by wire to the router so you can reconfigure it

Router Will look like this
Internet Connection Settings.
IP address : DHCP
DNS : DHCP

Localarea Connections Settings
IP Address 192.168.0.1
Subnetmask 255.255.255.0

DHCP server Settings.
DHCP server on/off on
IP Address Pool 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.255
DNS Forwarding on/off  on
DNS Server 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0

options for DNS forwarding May be under NAT, also the options some routers Give you for DMZ are not entirley what DMZ Means
that's exactly how i have mine set up to... but I do have WAP on... maybe i'll try turning that off and just getting the network established and then secure it. i have my personal computer always connected via wire then i have two LAPTOPS that will be wireless. i'll try that tonight, thanks.that worked like a charm i disabled all security, laptop connected, and then i added back security and i'm good to go. thanks a lot. on other question, i'm using WAP and not WAP2. is there a great deal of difference in security between the two or should i be ok with WAP? i'm not even sure if the dell 1390 supports WAP2. thanks.Glad To Here IT all worked out in the end, As for the Wap/wep Stuff, its all just a jumble of letters to me

Solve : Autorun isnt autorunning?

Answer»

im really confused on this one, my autorun isnt autorunning, no matter what disk i insert, it wont autorun, i think its been DISABLED, but i have no CLUE how to re-enable it... this is really annoying, some things wont install unless the autorun launches. if ANYONE knows how to re-enable it, tell me

thanks in advanceAnything can be installed WITHOUT autorunning. Just go to my computer and open up the disk and find the setup file there. Anyways, for you're question, pretty sure you can just right click on the drive in question then go to properties and click on the autoplay tab. There should be some settings there that you can adjust to your liking.

Also a simple google search brought this up:

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-018

It's to turn it off but you can just as easily go the other way with most of them. Remember, google is your friend.thanks... ive tryed googling it, but i couldnt find anything... google doesnt like me or somthing, lolYou might try this Google Reference:
http://features.engadget.com/2004/06/29/how-to-tuesday-disable-autorun-on-windows/

Again, the article deals with turning off the Autorun feature, but if you follow the instructions
you will see that you could just as well turn Autorun on.

Jerrywell, it already was a "1" which means it already is enabled, but not running... should i try uninstalling the DRIVERS for my Lite on DVD burner, then reboot and let windows re install it? i have done this with hardware before, but never with actuall drives, so i dont want to try it until i know it wont mess anything up...well since no one seems to be answering, ill just try it later

Solve : Antivirus Shutoff?

Answer»

Hi, I am wondering how exactly to turn off antivrus without uninstalling it. I am using the lates version of Mcaffee. If I disable the PROTECTION, the process that still recognizes potential threats still makes the effort to delete the file. After this, I decided to go into the process manager and delete all the "Mc" processes. One always remains, and I assume it is the one that stops viruses. That process cannot be killed. I cannot do it. Is there any way, or would someone have to uninstall the program to ultimately stop its protection.

P.S. The exception to this is of course Safe Mode. I am wondering, what registry SERVICES keep it intact. I remember once dealing with an AIM virus that had a registry key that bound itself to a system service. and that stopped its process from being terminated. I am wondering if this might be the same case.

Thank you. Quote

so far i understand in AV, let say you will stop the process now, and try to install something but LATER when you turn-on again your AV, it will scan then delete the file that AV thinks threat

So try to go in "exception" tools of your McAffee then put that file into exception
You could type MSCONFIG in the run menu. Go check in the startup pane for any McFee things that starts up and disable them.

Alternatively you could type REGEDIT in the run menu and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENTVERSION/

and

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENTVERSION/

Under both those there should be: RUN/blah blah

There you'll find the stuff that starts up with windows. You could just RENAME the McFee stuff there so it doesn't start up.And backup your registry before you even think about editing it!

Solve : Automatically start up from the only user account?

Hi there

On this PC I only have one account. The account isn't password protected. The thing is, if windows xp boots, you still have to CLICK on the name of that user account. I don't reallly like that. So does anybody knows how you boot automitically (without still clicking on the name in the welcomescreen) from this only account, not password protected

thanks

blackberryControl Panel-->User Accounts-->Change the way users log on or off-->Disable "Use the Welcome screen".thanks for the quick response, rob. Unfortuniatly this isn't the solution. If I do this, I still get a screen (an other, more like the windows 98 login screen, with the ok and cancel buttons) and I still have to click on OK. It doesn't boot automaticly from that acount. Any other  ideas?

If this may help you, here's a print screen:

Solve : "dumprep"??

Answer»

theres a WEIRD proccess under my "processes" tab in the task manager called dumprep, it just pops up randomly, and keeps eating up memory till it gets to about 400,000k then dissapears... i have no clue what it is, but it is driving me nuts...

btw, what is wwsecure.exe? i cant end it, its a "system" proccess, actually, there are quite a few processes that i am unsure of, heres a screen shot...Found on google as the first item returned during a search for "dumprep":

" dumprep.exe forms a part of Microsoft Windows XP (and later versions), in-built fault logging software. Upon serious errors this PROGRAM will write the details to a text file and request the information be sent to Microsoft. This program is a non-essential system process, and is installed for third party use. "

I don't know enough about the Dumprep process to tell if what you're experiencing is abnormal behavior, but atleast this gives you a place to start.

ALSO, I don't see any processes in your screenshot that look malicious.  I ran a search on a couple of them and, assuming you have specific hardware installed, they all look ok to me.  Remember though that malware and viruses can mimic legitamite processes to a point where the running processes tab doesn't give enough information to tell the difference.Dead_Reckon try to instal WinXP manager, he help you to identify all windows processes and force windows to close if you want this

small memory dump (64kb)
%SystemRoot%\Minidump
just change the option to none.......good luckthanks again   ... but i noticed somthing under the "user profiles" button thats under the advanced tab also... there is a account named "Admin" there, its only using 296k, and it is a "Local" account, so i know its nothing to worry about, but should i delete it? there is no way for me to access it that i can think of...

EDIT: strangly enough, it says the last time it was modified was 5/21/2005... which cant be, i have formatted this hard drive long after that date, during that date it was still in my dads possesion, and under his name, so why is this showing up at that date?

Solve : selecting pictures with the control key ( not work?

Answer»

I am unable to select random pictures while pressing the control key. it seems to grab everything in its path!! diagonal or otherwise.  this happens in explorer as well as photoshop.
this is my laptop, centrino 1.4 ghz, windows XP pro

I don't use the laptop much, just for slideshow presentations and photoshop tutorials. its a year old and has a 3 year warranty.
is this a windows problem or something I've done?

my friends think I may have accidentally set some other function to that key, but I have no idea where to look.

Hilli:

Are you using a wireless USB mouse or the laptop's touchpad?  Are you sure you are not using the Shift key?

Dochello out there! thanks for coming to my rescue! nope, not using the shift key.  I am using a usb laptop mouse... and it happens with both of my wacom tablets, with mouse or pen.
I've been searching all night on the web for answers... I deactived sticky keys.. I tried using a list or icon mode then holding the shift key while opening the thumbnail mode.... ( found that re: missing file names, ..don't have that problem)
I have deactivated the keypad, and reactivated the touchpad.... it does the same thing! I have reset all the clicks and speeds many times.   the frustration level is high!    I have tried squirming the cursor up between the pics hoping it won't touch any of them.
I do have the cursor set for one click, and it highlights the file by just passing over, no click.
my desktop is set up that way with no problems...I use the control key all the time!
I sure hope somebody can solve this mystery.I had the same problem with a desktop COMPUTER.  It took me what seemed forever to figure out the Shift key was sticking.  Replacing the keyboard fixed the problem.  That's not an option with a laptop, but you might want to have a qualified repair TECH take a look at your laptop's keyboard.

DocTo figure out whether or not the laptop's keyboard is at fault, try the laptop with an external keyboard.  Do you get the same behaviour?thanks for those two suggestions.  I will give them a try.  it seems so silly sice I have used this thing so seldom.

the laptop keyboard isn't impossible to replace!!! the acer factory/repair depot is only a few kilometeres from here.... they replaced a keyboard on my friends identical laptop as we watched.!
I still have this on warranty, but at least now I might not be so embarassed to ask them to look at it.

someone suggested it was a windows glitch, not an 'acer '  problem.

I will try the DIFFERENT keyboard thing first!

great forum! thanks guys!     Quote

thanks for those two suggestions...someone suggested it was a windows glitch, not an 'acer '  problem...

URW.

I think the root of the problem is the four-letter word you mentioned (the one that begins with the letter A).  Many users of Acer computers often have reason to get angry and start spouting other four-letter words!

Doc
[smiley=laugh.gif]   figures! it had all kinds of trouble at the beginning, they finally changed the hard drive and the battery and it has been working other than this.
a friend has had nothing but great luck with hers,,, 3 years running no problem except she wore out and broke her keyboard, thats why the replacement! it is her only computer and she uses it bigtime!
Acer makes Dell..... won't BUY dell either!
I got the lemon! Where did you get the information that Acer makes Dell? I don't believe that is the case.

http://www.forbes.com/business/global/2005/1128/026A.htmloops, sorry if I stepped out of line~  I got the info from something I read when i was looking to buy Acer that I had never heard of.
Also, the tech that serviced it said that they serviced all the dells in Canada!     i guess it was a wrong assumption.
I would be FORWARD enough to claim I didn't buy dell becasue of the cost...and I went by recommendation of an acer /same model/ user.

now, who can fix it???
AHA!! PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!
I finally took it to the shop, and luckily one of the techs knew what the problem was!!  In the folder options I had set it up for 'one click' like my desktop, but apparently it doesn't work that way in a laptop...
unclicked it, and now everything works tickety-boo, except that I have to double click.
what a pain!

Viva la ACER!!!!!!

ps: acer doesn't 'make' computers for dell, but they do supply some lower end models to certain companies , one that starts with the letter "D"    yep!, you guessed it!   The single click option is for girls.        SO?Acer sells a LOT of computers worldwide. Where is a link for the "D" maker they build for?I have no idea, I just got it from the horse's mouth.    they also make some ibm stuff.. other companies add their logo.  some of their models are being made in china now.   they don't make all models for other companies.

whether they make it or assemble it I have no idea.  even the car manufacturers make pieces for other companies.
all I care about is that my laptop works!!!!

Solve : XP Crash Verification?

Answer»

I did a bit of cleaning in my room today which involved shifting my comp around. In order to do this, I turned off the surge protector it was plugged in to and unplugged the comp from the back (where it goes to the PSU). I did my cleaning and such and plugged the things back into the surge protector, including the tower. I plugged it back in to the power outlet ON the tower (think PSU again) and, after plugging in about three or four more things in the surge protector, I turned it [the surge protector] on. Upon this, it made a sound (which I cannot accurately describe) that could not have meant anything good. I attempted to turn my tower on. The power button (which lights-up when powered on) came on. I sat there for about ten seconds with nothing happening. Usually, by now, the eMachines title screen has at least loaded. I noticed the light that indicated that the comp was reading a CD was on, so I pressed the CD drive ejector to no avail. Shortly after, the button (which lights-up when powered on) turned off (which would, normally, of course, suggest that the computer has powered off) however the CD drive light was still going and the "busy" light on the comp was still aglow as well ("busy" light indicating that some type of operation was underway with the computer). The button's light did not turn back on, and would not respond when pressed again. In order to stop computer operation completely, I was forced to unplug it from the back (PSU). Upon plugging it back in, I was able to power the computer on again, but it still failed to do anything except sit there and indicate that it was reading a CD, to which I could still not open the CD drive to determine. Eventually, after a couple of seconds, the power-on light went off again, yet the light for the CD drive and the "busy" light were still going strong.

I basically said all that to have someone determine whether or not my computer is junk now. I really like the computer and I'd be absolutely thrilled if there is a solution, but the comp is relatively old (for an XP, anyway) and so it would not surprise me to find that there is nothing that can be done. Since the CD drive will not eject, I cannot even insert the Restore disk to restore it, and I can think of no other solution that would not involve paying something (of which it would simply be more cost-efficient to buy another computer, really, unless there is a VERY cheap way). So if anyone can verify whether the computer is completely dead now and whether or not there is a solution, I would be greatly appreciative.

NOTE: Keep in mind that when I say the comp is doing NOTHING upon start-up, that does mean that it is not even running the boot-disk check. (Or, if it is, it isn't giving me anything to work with.)The most likely cause would be a power supply gone bad, ALTHOUGH motherboard issues would be the next possible THING that comes to mind. Sometimes a blown power supply can damage other vital components as it dies, unfortunately.

I would never suggest someone junk an otherwise good machine with an XP license. Do you have a restore set of CD's with it?

Power supplies are reasonably cheap. Please post the model number and we'll see what we can find. Are you comfortable working inside the case if necessary? Paying someone to do simple repairs would probably be the most expensive part of getting this resolved.
Model number is T1300 (eMachines). I'm not sure of the voltage of the PSU.

Working inside the case is no problem for me. And I do possess the restoration CDs.Here is the support link:

http://www.emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Desktops&subcat=T-Series&model=T1300

You can evidently e-mail tech support if needed.

I bet it is a standard PSU, though probably small and poorly made. YOu can open it up and look to see any markings on it. THere will be only 4 small screw that hold it in, accessed from the back of the machine.

Do you have a working power supply to test with? Maybe BORROW one for  a few minutes? If that doesn;t get it and based on what you have posted, I would suggest the motherboard is a gonner as well. There's a 98 LYING around the house. I took the PSU out of it and attempted to PUT it in my tower and hook it up, but nothing at all happened (no power-on or anything). I've noticed that trhe XP's PSU has two little plug-ins that are different from anything on the 98's, so I'm thinkin that may be it. THough, should the 98's be compatible with it (is it even a possibility)?Well "the 98" and "the XP" does not adequately describe the components of the machines. Can you take a picture of the "little things" that concern you? We are just guessing otherwise.

Solve : Can "All Programs" items be locked??

Answer»

I have a question regarding XP that I can't seem to find an answer to.  This has frustrated me about 1 in every 3 or 4 times that I have accessed the All Programs menu.  I have always seemed to have a heck of a time MANAGING to move my mouse cursor perfectly horizontal enough to access the sub-menu of the program in the All Programs menu that I want to open.  I often go off on just enough of a diagonal with my cursor to lose the sub-menu I want, and end up opening the sub-menu of the program listed just above or below the program I wanted.  So; is there any way to be able to highlight the main program listing and then "lock" the sub-menu open, perhaps by clicking on the main listing?  That way, even if one didn't manage to make a straight line across to the sub-menu, the sub-menu would still stay open?  Also, if anyone knows for sure, I would also appreciate being advised that it CAN'T be done, so I'll stop wasting my time trying.  Thanks to all!  If you click on one item it should lock open the next sub menu. If you can't figure out how to do this you could always switch to Classic View.I thought I heard that once before.  That makes me wonder if I have some setting somewhere SET incorrectly.  Take "Accessories", for instance, because EVERYONE has that one in their All Programs menu.  I highlight it, and the sub-menu automatically appears.  But, even if I click on it, if I move the mouse cursor away, the sub-menu still disappears.  Have you tried lowering your mouse speed settings ? ? ?

Control panel/Mouse.

patio.  8-)Yes, I should have mentioned that I considered that option.  HOWEVER, we all use our mice 1000 times as much as we use the All Programs menu.  I've got my mouse fine-tuned just how I like it, so I don't want to do that over an issue as non-critical as this.  Thank you for the suggestion, though!  Just double-click on whatever entry you want (e.g. Accessories) and a (Windows Explorer) folder will be opened containing all the sub-items.That WORKS, too, but sometimes it's a little slow.  I'm still wondering about GX1_Man's point, because that's the second time I've heard that.  Sub-menus should stay open if you click the highlighted program, shouldn't they?  And by the way, at the risk of offending, because I sure don't want to; I hope he wasn't implying intentionally that I lack the ability to figure out how to click a mouse button.   Quote

Solve : RAID1 setup help - frustrated!?

Answer»

Hello - I'm having trouble creating a RAID1 array and I wondered if I did it all wrong.

I installed a new MB (Gigabyte) with the nvidia nforce3 chipset. SATA RAID is onboard. The RAID drivers are already installed in my OS (confirmed - XP).  My 40GB IDE drive is almost full so I bought 2 200GB Maxtor SATA drives (with MaxBlast software). I installed one of the SATA drives and cloned my existing drive through MaxBlast, pulled the IDE drive and have been HAPPILY booting from the SATA drive. I then connected the 2nd SATA drive and did what Gigabyte SUPPORT told me to do:

"If you want set 2 SATA drives to Raid 1 ( mirror ), you need to go into IDE function setup, set SATA primary master Raid & SATA secondary master Raid to Enable. Then when the system boots press ctrl + G (two keys), go to Raid bios & create Raid 1 array -  then select duplicate from source drive to the destination drive".

I went into the Raid setup utility - both drives were shown & I created the array. NOWHERE did it have a selection to "duplicate from source drive to the destination drive". So, of course, thinking the data would copy over when I exited the utility, I SHUT it down. The system tried to boot and wouldn't (boot disk failure - insert operating system disk). Great...

I took away the 2nd SATA drive and booted back to the 1ST one - nothing had been CORRUPTED in the process.

I thought (my mistake) I'd hook up the 2nd drive, go into the Raid utility and try to rebuild the array...just like a drive crashed and I had to add a new one - a situation where I'd HAVE to copy the data from one drive to the mirror drive. It asked me to "select a drive from inside the array" to rebuild. I chose the second (empty) drive but nothing happened. Was I supposed to select the first drive (with data)?? I'm so confused!

Anyway, now I feel like deleting the array, wiping the data off the 1st SATA drive and starting all over. Can anyone give me a simple, step-by-step tutorial on how to do this? This is what I THINK I should do. Am I close??

1- Go into the setup utility and clear the drive and maybe delete the array?

2- Reinstall the IDE drive and make sure I can still boot from it.

3- Connect both SATA drives and reboot into the RAID utility - create the array. Save & exit, still booting from the IDE drive.

4 - Format the SATA drive(s) with Maxblast - will it do both since it's now a mirrored array?

5 - Clone from the IDE to the array - or whatever it shows available to clone to.
Does it see the array as one drive?

6 - Shut down, remove the IDE drive, boot into BIOS, enable primary and secondary master Raid, and boot from the array.

THANKS & sorry for the lengthy post....first time.

Was I supposed to select the first drive (with data)??
YES!Thanks - I don't know why that doesn't seem obvious to me - seems you should be "rebuilding" the blank drive. Oh well... so much for my logic! I'll try again and select the first disk.

Solve : Loss of laptop sound?

Answer» WITHIN the past few days, I have lost all sound on my laptop speakers.

If I connect external speakers through the headphone jack, sound and volume are fine.

I FEEL that I may have triggered something to silence the laptop speakers but am not sure.

Dell Inspiron 700m
WIN XP
512 Mb RAM
40 Gb HDDIf this laptop still under warranty?  I'm not aware of anything on a Dell that would mute the speakers but still provide sound to the headphone socket.

Check under the CONTROL panel: there may be some additional plug in for the onboard sound that can do this kind of THING.  You're on your own there, unless you can post a screen shot of your control panel.

Also TRY Dell's online support site, or consider phoning them.
