Solve : Windows Media Player - video capture??

Answer»

I was wondering if it's possible to capture video clips on Windows Media Player - I know how to capture images from DVDS, but I wanted to capture clips from DVD movies. I already have a program (WINDVD) which allows me to do this, but the quality's really poor and someone told me that it's possible to get better results from Windows Media Player. The sort of thing I was thinking of would be a DVD (just a movie) and capturing a ten-second or so CLIP from it. Any help would be much appreciated!  I've never captured video but http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=video+capture+with+WMP&btnG=Google+Search yielded some hits that may have the solution.  They might be talking about Windows Movie Maker.  This program (comes with Windows XP) allows you to capture video.  I don't know about the quality as I've never really used it.  Hope this helps.I tried capturing video from a DVD using Windows Movie Maker and it would not work.  If I click on "Capture from video device", WMM tells me "A video capture device was not detected".

I have captured video from connecting my digital camera in webcam mode.  Apparently, WMM only works with devices such as digital or movie cameras, webcams, etc.  In answer to the original question, no, media player is just a player.

Solve : bad or missing?

Answer»

My hubby accidentally chose the WRONG setting for SOMETHING that affected our Nero PROGRAM.  He checked of the wrong version of Windows xp that we have.  Now we get a message that says "bad or missing"- only runs with Win2000 or XP and I have XP.  How can I get this program to recognize that I do have this program.
TamikaWell that doesn't make a whole lot of SENSE. How about a SYSTEM Restore to yesterday or before he had this adventure?

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/getstarted/ballew_03may19.mspxMore details, please.  Exactly what do you mean by "wrong setting for something"?  What something?  What setting, in what program?

Solve : excel - solver function?

Answer»

Here's an EXCEL question:
When using the SOLVER tool, how do you lock cells from changing.  I have a model where the sover is helping me make a work schedule.  I am using the solver to vary a range of cells until the schedule "solves" iself (specifically a BINARY integer linear program).
Here's my question:
The solver does its work by changing a range of cells; however, there are a few cells in here that I NEED to TAKE the value that I want.  Dollar signs do not seem to do the trick.  I have a very small working knowledge of excel, and there may be a very simple remedy to this problem.  If you can help or point me in a direction where I can find an answer, it would make my next few evenings easier.

Thanks!
I've been an Excel user for years, but I've never used this tool.  Here's a Microsoft reference: Introduction to optimization with the Excel Solver tool.  I don't know whether it answers your question.  A Google search on Excel Solver will yield NUMEROUS other references.

Solve : Replaced file recovery??

Answer»

So here is what happened, Not paying attention, not enough coffee, whatever. I went to copy some photos from a disc to a folder that already had photos in it. This disc was from a friend at a trip we had just taken, and wanted to add his photos to mine. I'm guessing that our photos were named the same, (IE: dhsc0012). So when his photos were ADDED to my folder, it replaced all my photos. I had already deleted them off the memory card in the camera, so that is not an option. Now is there any way I can get my photos back, or am I stuck trying to remember their images when I'm 80?

Thanks for the help.If your Lucky you might be able to get them back.

Try a Program Like R studio

Its made for recovering Deleted files and stuff,

The way Windows used to work is it would simply Rename a file with a special Character that made it invisible, but i don't think thats how it works any more. undelete was very usefull back thenWell i appreciate the try, but I was UNABLE to recognize the photos that I was looking for. I did find a few that I deleated a few years ago.

Any other ideas out there would be appreaciated. If they were overwritten by files with the same name that complicates it even further. You can try here:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=file+recovery+software&btnG=Google+Search

THe more you use that hard drive that they are stored on, the less likely you are to ever get them back, if that can be done at all. Sorry.Well, I think we are getting a bit closer but still not quite there. Under a folder of recently viewed items, I have found some photos that have the names of the files that were replaced. When I go to open the photo to see what it is, is fades out and won't let me see it. All I can see is the icon(not actuall photo) and the name. Properties is not giving me anything usefull, and when I try to use a recovery program to try to restore it, I KEEP getting and error. Something about it being a damaged file. I'm thinking this is a bad sign. There are other photos in the same folder that I can open up and view, but they are not the ones I have been looking for. So if there are anymore ideas about this, or a way around what I have tried so far, I'm all ears (or eyes).

Thanks again! You really need a program to recover deleted files. You need a friend with a computer, who will be willing to help you, because you have to move your HARDDISK in his computer. Don't install or copy any new files or programs on the harddisk with the photos (this is your harddisk). On his computer install the recovery program and try to recover your files, from your harddisk. Maybe you'll have some luck. Or else, at 80's... You KNOW

Solve : Has my hard drive died????

Answer»

(I'm putting this on the windows forum, since I don't KNOW whether I have a HARDWARE or a software problem).

Please can anybody advise? My laptop started making a scratching noise from the left side. Then I had a "blue screen" message to say that it was closing down. Since then I've not been able to boot it - I get the message:

"For Realtek RTL 8110/8169 Series gigabit ethernet controller v1.10 (040718).
PXE-E61: media test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting PXERom
Reboot and select proper boot device, or INSERT boot media in selected boot devices and press a key"

I tried putting a cd in the drive, but that didn't make any difference. I looked at the BIOS (not that I'm experienced at such things) and it showed the first boot drive as the hard drive.

I'm running Windows Home.  My laptop is a Rock Pegasus 650, with 100gb hard drive (720rpm)

Grateful for any suggestions

Julia A
It did not find a usable boot device, so either the drive has dies or there are problems with it's connection on the motherboard. Is the machine still under warranty? If so, I would contact them. I've never heard of that brand. How old is it?

I would PERSONALLY boot a Linux LiveCD to see if the hard drive can be read and back up any data if it can be that you need. If that doesn't work, you  know for sure it is hardware. You can download the file on a working machine and burn it as an ISO with Nero, etc. and then boot with it. It will not write any files to the hard drive and is a great test.

http://www.slax.org/download.php

A hard drive can be replaced on a laptop, but not just any drive will do, and if that isn't the only problem, that is no solution.Found this : http://www.rockdirect.com/notebooks/pegasus650_cons.htm

If its got a 3 year collect and return warranty then thats alright!, Looks a nice laptop BTW.I'm leery of any off brand laptop, but a 3 year warranty would definitely make me feel less anxious about it. We'll see if they can come through. Many thanks for your responses.  Yes, Rock are a reputable UK laptop manufacturer; I contacted them on Saturday and they are sending me a new hard disk.  They also said that it might be the motherboard, in which case the laptop will have to be sent back for repair.

I was interested in what you said, GX1_Man, about using Linux to possibly recover some of the data on the hard drive. I'd assumed that I'd lost it all (fortunately most of my data is backed up to an external drive, but there are programs that I'd like to be able to access if possible).  I don't know the first thing about Linux, or Slax, so would be grateful for any step by step guidance on what I need to do.Burn the CD with it and boot the machine just to play around and experiment. No files are WRITTEN to the hard disk just by running the operating system and it's applications from the CD. You can save files if it is FAT32 on the hard drive. If you are concerned about your hard drive/data while using a Linux Live CD, you can just unhook it!

Solve : Windows XP Getting Stuck during Boot?

Answer»

I've just started having this new problem in the past 2 days or so. I have no idea what is going WRONG, so I'm hoping someone else can help me figure this out. I turn on the computer and everything is loading up fine, the memory test goes fine and all of the hard drives are found. The computer hangs up at the blue screen where it displays what version of windows im running and with how much memory. I can let it SIT there all day and there wont be any activity noise coming from the computer, and nothing else happends. If I boot into safe mode however, everything works like a charm.

Now, just PRIOR to this problem I had something very similar to it. When I would turn on the computer it would get through everything fine, even pass that blue screen part, but instead of showing the windows LOGON gui it would just show a black screen. No cursor, not logon boxes just black. I found out that if I booted into safemode and then restarted normally it would all work fine. This no longer works with the computer hanging up at the blue screen.

So, I'm a bit perplexed as to what the problem is. Any help would be greatly appreciatedTry booting into SafeMode & deleting the video drivers  , then reboot as normal.

Alan <>.  I also tried disabling non-windows SERVICES to see if there was a hang up there... still gets stuck at the blue screen everytime.Pop the XP cd into the cdrom drive, let the system boot to it and do a repair.

Solve : chkdsk messed all my files up!?

Answer»

Hi all.

The other day i desided to reinstall Windows 2000 Pro, and re partition my Disk0 so i could CHECK out Linux.

Old Disk0, Partition 1 = C: 20GB, Partition 2 = D: 160GB
Old Disk1, Partition 1 = E: 180GB

So i copy all FILES from C: to E:\Backup_C
And i copy all files from D: to E:\Backup_D

Repartion Disk0 and reinstall Windows 2000 Pro.
Just as windows is done installing and starts rebooting, I go put on some coffe (Bad mistake), when i come back to the PC it is already in the process of running chkdsk on my old Disk1:Partition 1 = E:

Now all the backup files E:\Backup_C & E:\Backup_D are totally messed up......well all the really importants one anyway....but all the old original files on E: is intact.
It looks like they are encrypted or something, and are useless :-(

I have tried to run GetDataBack For NTFS on the Disk0, but it seems that this dossent work out all that well, lots of files are still missing, and it is offcourse all the important ones.

are there any way to reverse the chkdsk or any tool that might be able to recover the files???Have a look throught these. If you are using the hard drive that the files were deleted from, your chance of recovery goes down. The best solution would be to slave it into a working machine at least for this exercise.

If they were overwritten by files with the same name that complicates it even further. You can TRY here:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=file+recovery+software&btnG=Google+Search

Trust me, I have run recovery in every thinkable way with the disk as slave.

When i RePartitioned the drive, i used Seagates DiscWizard from which i first Reset the device totally, create my partitions, and let Windows format it's partitions and Linux format it's partitions.

Recovery on this disc is useless.

Unless ther's some way of fixing the files that chkdsk messed up....well then i just have to live with it

Solve : Bootup problem with csrss.exe application.?

Answer»

When I start up Windows XP, I get theis message:
The C:\WINDOWS\system32\vnmdke\csrss.exe application cannot be run in Win32 mode.

When I clikc OK, it says:
Could not load or run 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\vnmdke\csrss.exe' specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry.

I looked for the folder, vnmdke, and could not find it. I set my folders to show hidden files, and it was nowhere to be seen. Any ideas?Insert your XP CD into the CD drive.

From the Start Menu select Run and type command and hit enter.

At the command prompt type sfc /scannow ...just as it is typed here and hit Enter.
Be patient let it do it's job.

patio.   8-)Thanks, patio. I did what you suggested. The scan ran but didn't report anything wrong. The problem persists.Have you recently installed any new programs on that machine ? ? Like a new game perhaps ? ?

patio.    8-) Quote

Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry.
A safe way to do this is with Hijackthis.I ran HijackThis. It told me to save a log and show it to someone who knows what the heck they're doing. These lines were in the log:
F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\vnmdke\csrss.exe
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\system32\vnmdke\csrss.exe
Anyone have a clue what that means?Without posting your complete logfile it would be guesswork at best...

Ok

Total frustration. vnmdke does not show up in the MS Knowledge Base articles at all...
However  csrss is a valid XP process but that still doesn't explain what program or task is calling that process.

Do me a favor browse to your win.ini file...it will be at the end of your Windows folder.
Right clik it and choose "Open With" and select Notepad cut and paste a copy and post it here.

Do not edit it yet at this time.Re-run HJT, TICK both the entries and push the fixit button.Thanx Fed...
I wasn't aware Hijack this made it that easy.
Nice assist.

Solve : log file for updates?

Answer»

Hi
Im currentley installaing Windows XPSP2 through BAT files and also deploying the software updates for Windows XP SP2 after words - ALL OF THIS IS GOING WELL

I have a log file with which I can check if a workststion is online/offline and whether I have acces or not

here is my dilemma
I also need a simple way to see wheter the security updates was INSTALLED or not
there is a log file under c:\Windows\ for each patch - is there a way that I can have this written to a log file if I reference it against a file called secupdates.txt that will have the relevant security updates listed  with the computer name - I want to pull this later on into an Excell file so that I can have some form of reporting
Unfortunatly I do not have the luxury of SMS/WSUS to do all of this for me

HELP Greatly appreciated
FRIKKIEIs this sort of stuff recorded in the event logs?  If so, you could use LogParser to pull and sift the relevant information.  Would that help?Hi
I think it should be written in the event viewer
I went through the system and application log files but couldnt find any thing there

But what I have done this far is the following
FIND /I "qbc1" C:\windows\KB*.log echo >> secupdt.log

the only problem is that the current output that I get is as follows

---------- C:\WINDOWS\KB911564.LOG

---------- C:\WINDOWS\KB912812-IE6SP1-20060322.182418.LOG

---------- C:\WINDOWS\KB912919.LOG

---------- C:\WINDOWS\KB914389.LOG

---------- C:\WINDOWS\KB917953.LOG

I would LIKE to have this into a single line and seperated by semicolons and without ------c:\windows - just the kb no would be sufficient

thx FrikkieYou might try asking this question in the DOS forum, for some batch scripting tips.  I'm a PHP man, so whilst I could write you a script to strip out the requisite information, you'd need the PHP engine installed in order to RUN it.Thank you I will do so

Solve : Boots to blank screen?

Answer»

I was having trouble getting my mic to work so I installed an older nforce sound driver and uninstalled the newer one. Now my pc boots, i see the xp splash and then where the xp profile login should come up its completely blank...black SCREEN. What is the safest way to roll this sucker back to safety?

I can get it to boot to SAFE mode, I'm just unsure what to do next  :-?

XP Pro
Asus Board, AMD ProcessorKelltech:

Boot to Safe Mode and use the Windows XP OPTION in Device Manager to roll back the driver.

DocOk, did this and I still get the black screen boot. Is it safe to go into safe mode and uninstall all nforce drivers/devices and reinstall?Yes, that is a good plan.Good news...I can boot into normal mode again.

Bad news: ide & secondary ide channels have gone wrong somehow and when windows attempts to install drivers for them it says "driver is not intended for this platform."

Also I NOTICED the video drivers were wiped out during this process. I thought maybe I should uninstall/reinstall those now too?Re-boot into Safe Mode and re-install your motherboard drivers...this should fix the IDE channels.
Then you can re-install the video drivers after you get a proper boot.

Solve : Calling All Computer Genius's !!?

Answer»

Hi,
I really need some help.
Everynight for the last two days I've had a really annoying PROBLEM
When I goto bed, I leave my PC downloading a Linux ISO. When I come back the following morning, my computer is back at the login screen and when I type in my password it logs me into windows like i was originaly logged out  :-?
When I log back on, I load up my torrent client and the Linux ISO has to REHASH everytime.
I've check the system uptime and the pc seems to have restarted its-self an hour after I went to bed  :-/
A few days AGO i formatted my HDD and reinstalled windows because of constant errors but i never ever had this problem before
The only thing that I've been using thats different is my Torrent client, i've changed to "G3 Torrent"

My PC Specs are as follows if it helps:

WinXP Pro
256MB RAM
40GB HDD (Boot)
80GB HDD (Storage)
Nvidia GForce FX5200
P3 800MHz

Please Please Please help.
Thanks in advance,
Shoon81Ok, lets make sure of something. Right click on your desktop, then properties. Go to the screen saver tab, then under monitor power click the power button. Now under settings for the power scheme. make these changes. Put system standby at never and turn off hard disks at never. THen go to the advanced tab a make sure the box next to prompt for password when computer resumes form standby in NOT checked.
Does your bittorrent client have an OPTION to turn the PC off following download?do you have your screen saver set to "password protect"?. your computer may have simply logged you out because your screen saver was activated.

could anyone else have used your computer and logged you out?I'll go for the screensaver and log out when idle option.

Solve : Three stars appear when i try writing "all"?

Answer»

On a different computer, WHENEVER i try writing the combination "all" in an internet FORUM , there appear only three stars, like this: ***.
I wonder why this is and if anyone has ever heard of this sort of PROB. You can imagine that it is sort of annoying...
Thanks in advance for your help!Does this only happen on internet forums?  Does it happen whilst typing or after the message is posted?it happens after the message is posted. at first i thought it had to do with the forum, but it has happened in various internet forums, so i guess it is something with my computer.
as far as i can tell it only happens with forums...Hmm...

If you post the same message to the same forum from both computers in question, do you get different results?  Can you post a link to an example page where the problem is occurring?i am now at this computer, and i write for instance "*** i ***ege is ***owed".
i guess it has got to do something with zone alarm (because before i inst***ed it everythign was alright) but i just can't figure out what EXACTLY... i am re***y out of ideas  thanks for your help, i figured it out myself now...
it was zone alarm and something with identity protection. i am not the only user at this pc, so someone put the word "all" for some reason there   anyway, thanks Well what a REALLY helpful feature THAT is.

Thanks for reporting back.  Filed in my brain under "YET more stupid things that 'security' software can do..."

Solve : Using GMAIL through outlook, can't send mail?

Answer»

I have gone through the setup details many times.  My gmail account downloads email to my Outlook just fine, but when the Outlook outbox will not have success sending email through gmail.
The port numbers are correct, POP3 - 995, SMTP - 465 with the boxes checked.  Outgoing server requiring authentication box is also checked.
I check all the email addresses and passwords.  No luck.
When I press send/receive in Outlook(not express) it downloads all the new mail but fails at sending.  Here is what it TELLS me:
"
Task '[email protected] - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x8004210B) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'"

Any thoughts?

I'm wondering if I shouldn't just bag Outlook and move to Thunderbird.  But I'm not sure if my PALM Treo can sync with Thunderbird.  Anybody know the answer to that?

Thansk so much.Thunderbird synch support is sketchy at BEST, I'm afraid.  Now there's something that would assist in breaking Outlook's stranglehold...  (Mind you, I'm a fan of Outlook.)

The most likely cause of this problem is attempting to send either to the wrong server or to the wrong port.  I don't want to INSULT your intelligence, but did you double-check the specified outgoing server for spelling mistakes, etc?  I just successfully connected to Gmail's SMTP server on port 465 as follows: [email protected]:~# telnet smtp.gmail.com 465
Trying 64.233.183.109...
Connected to gmail-smtp.l.google.com.
Escape character is '^]'.So the server is CLEARLY up and running.

Another possibility is that your firewall is blocking port 465 - have you checked that out?

Solve : Windows not recognizing mass storage devices!?

Answer»

Yesterday, for no obvious reason, Windows "decided" not to recognized my USB hub!  The CPU is an AMD Sempron 2400+ with  1.68 GHz and 512MB or RAM.  Windows XP Home Edition was installed before purchase.  For two years now, I have had no problem with any mass storage devices such as the hub, memory stick, or iPOD.  The Device Manager now reads them as an "unknown device".  They are functional, though, working well on our LAPTOP!  Windows recognizes all other devices (printer, camera) in the same USB ports.   I ran all Windows updates and checked for drivers, but none are listed.  I am completely confused and not computer savvy enough to figure it out!  HELP!Try using the Safely Remove Hardware Tab in the tra area and dis-connect the device ...then do a shutdown and re-boot without the device plugged in. SHUT down, re-connect the device and re-boot.

Does this help ?

patio.   8-)Thanks for the suggestion, but it did not help.  The same alert pops up saying "Device has malfunctioned.....not recognized....".   Yet, the device does work on the laptop, therefore it has not malfunctioned.  IT's just not logical.
Try to restore the old drivers through the hardware device  menu

OK suggestion #1 didn't work ...let's try suggestion #2.
Go to Control Panel/ System/ Hardware/ Device Manager and scroll down to your USB hub listings...they will be at the bottom.
Right clik each one and select "Remove"...you will get a warning message/ ignore it. Do this for all USB hubs listed. Close out of Device Manager and re-boot the machine.
XP will automatically re-install your USB device drivers on restart.

patio.   8-)OK, I uninstalled all 4 USB hubs (including the one with the mouse) then closed the device manager and rebooted.   As you said, the drivers were reinstalled automatically.  I tried the memory stick, but the same message appeared:     "... not recognized".  In the device manager, it LISTS "unknown device".  The mouse and printer continue to work just fine in those ports.   Thank you for your suggestions....any more?

BionixonIs the laptop running XP as well ? ? ?

patio. Are you Still Using The External USB HUB to Test your USB Devices, if you are , try Putting your Memory Stick Straight in to the ComputerI did insert the memory stick directly into the computer.   THe laptop has Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005.  It's STRANGE, when I inserted the stick, a message popped up saying "New hardware found" then another saying "Driver installed and ready for use", but....a few seconds later the same message appears saying device not recognized by Windows.    bionixon:

It sounds like the memory stick is shot.  Try a different one to see if you get the same RESULTS, or try the memory stick in a different computer.  As for the iPOD, you may have to reset it or reinstall the latest iPOD and iTunes software update.

DocDoc
Thanks for the input.  I did try another stick and also used the same one on my laptop.  They are both functional, but not on the PC.  I'm completely baffled.  Do I have a screwed up Windows suddenly?   What could cause it to work fine one minute and not the next?
Meanwhile, I am enjoying reading the other posts in the forum!  I hope to eventually participate!Your USB ports are Broken , just broken, is what i surmise at this pointBionixon:

Panboy might be correct.  Another possibility: The drivers for the USB host controllers and root hubs are corrupted.  Try uninstalling the USB host controllers and root hubs in Device Manager and restarting the PC so Windows will reinstall the drivers (you might need the Windows CD or manufacturer's CD that came with the PC if Windows asks for it).

Doc  Doc, you wrote "(you might need the Windows CD or manufacturer's CD that came with the PC if Windows asks for it). "  I don't have a CD, so I'm afraid to perform the uninstall if I will need it.   I have already uninstalled the root hubs and restarted, etc. but the problem still occurs.  You are suggesting to remove the USB host controllers, too....that appears to be everything relating to USB on the PC?  THis sounds like you might be correct, but I'm hesitant w/o the CD.....should I take my chances?

What's the OS on your PC.

Solve : windows xp load freezes?

Answer»

i have a celeron 866 box that ran windows xp pro fine for 2+ years.
the day after i made my daughter's account administrator
& she had downloaded some music sharing software,
i noticed HD LED running non-stop.  i FORCED off power, rebooted.
SCREEN now comes up to a very dim win xp load screen
progress bar is dark, screen stays there as HD runs non-stop.

a friend tells me i should not have forced off power
windows might have been doing some sort of self-imposed defrag.

i tried booting from the microsoft WinXP_EN_PRO_BF.EXE
6 floppy set & a: drive runs, but machine never loads floppy.
floppy light turns off, dim win xp screen comes up & HD
LED is on constantly.

i have a new blank HD & oem win xp home to install.
is that the best solution?A Format and Reinstall is Likely the Easiest WAY to get back up and Running

Unless there any thing on the Computer you need to keep?

But i don't know why your Screen is Faded

The Reason the Boot floppies weren't working is Likely because you bios is not set to boot from Floppythank you panboy for your reply.

i'd like to keep the fouled HD to grab files from, yes.
same friend tells me the HD is hosed from some
infiltration & even as a slave drive it will infect system.
i had current updated norton 2006 on pc.

this celeron has a weird BIOS
i can F8 at celeron screen & CHOOSE boot device.
when i choose floppy, it seems to read floppy
but still comes up to dim win xp load screen,
progress bar blank.

only an 866mhz, trying to find my oem win98se disk here . . .Well form what i Hear Norton is Quite Often Regarded as the Worst Virus you can get.

If you Do Slave the Drive into some other computer, and your Worried about perhaps a Virus, just Run An AVG scan on it Before you try to copy any files off it.

In t the Case of the Floppies not booting in that situation , they might just be Bad, Try Booting for the XP or Win 98SE Cd's see if you have better luckthanks once more panboy
i'm downloading avg71free_394a763.exe now.
still can't find my win98se oem disk.
think i'll just try to load oem winxppro.
is that easy with a blank HD?
how would i format a blank drive? The XP install Wizard gives a Pretty Good Step By Step Process, just boot off the Disk and answer it's questions

It would be Safer for your old data in you remove the Old HDD so you can Accidentally Format it instead of the new one
the XP installer Partitions and Formats the Drive. no messy Fdisk Commands

Mostly Just use the install Default Options on it should be fine

Solve : Need help with DVD plz?

Answer»

Hi GXMan
I was hoping you'd answer....
Its a dvd, photo montage made for me by a videographer for my family.  I found him on the internet and got lucky, he did an excellent job.  He doesn't have a large company, nothing like that.....works out of his home. punkysdilemms.....  It almost sounds like you dont have the necessary codecs installed.  What Format is the  "photo montage " in ?

Quote

Perhaps this is copyrighted material???
I also think the dvd which was made for you is copy PROTECTED ( by the maker )

dl65  Thank you dl65
Please forgive me....I'm extremely computer illiterate.
What do you mean what "format" my photo montage is in?
I'm sorry.....what does it mean codecs?  Why do I need to have the proper ones to install?
Thanks!
Punky   :-?   :-/

dl65
I think you may be right.  I shall have to call him and ask if he can send me one that isn't!
And then I shouldn't have any problems???
Thanks dl65Most photographers make their money not simply by charging for their time, but by charging for copies of the material they produce.  They exert copyright and are generally unlikely to give you carte BLANCHE to copy material as much as you like.  If you discuss exactly what you want to do with the chap in question, he may be able to come up with some mutually acceptable suggestions however.Thank you Rob
As a business, that only makes sense doesn't it.
Hopefully we can negotiate and come to a MIDDLE ground.
I'm pretty determined.....    but I guess I can only GO so far.
Thank you Rob!No problem.  Polite negotiation is the key!  Exactly!  Courtesy and respect will TAKE you far.
Thanks Rob.  I hope this will be the solution for me!

Solve : Loading Issues-Generic icon displays- Please help!?

Answer»

First off, if your reading this, thank you.

Everything was fine yesterday. I was working with my usual programs, everything seemed fine.
This morning I turned my computer on, opened Firefox, internet was fine, Photoshop was fine. I go to open my computer and it opens, but nothing loads. I tryed to go to add and remove programs, none of the programs show up, and the "please wait while a list is being populated for you" did not show up, but other parts of it did. It's like, folders and such being to load but don't finish, or something. And also, when I have multiple windows of a certain programs, say messenger or firefox, you know when you have the "2" or "3" next to the name of the application, you would normally click on it and the windows would be displayed above the taskbar and you would be allowed to choose which one you'd like. Nope. nothing happens. The volume ICON has disappeared from my system tray. My pictures (when it chooses to load) displays pics in the most awkward way, all distorted and out of place, the thumbnail that is not the actual picture. Notepad and other windows accessories won't open, i just get the windows error sound. For some icons such as my computer and my documents, i get the windows generic icon. Lots of thing seem to be going wrong, and it's freaking me out a bit becuase I live on the computer. From work to music, all my hobbies and such. Please help, anyone. This is killing me.

What malware PROTECTION are you using? Do you have a real Windows CD if that is required? What make and model machine and what components? Are you the  only user of the computer? Have you tried a system restore?I am the only user of the computer. I have tried a system restore. Didn't do anything. Quote

What malware protection are you using? Do you have a real Windows CD if that is required? What make and model machine and what components?

You missed most of the questions!I use PC - Cillin Internet Sercurity 2006. Its a Dell Dimension 3000 running Windows XP Home edition. These components will not open, get a "failed to initialize", or do not load completely.

Notepad
Administrative Tools
Folder Options
Fonts
Printers and Faxes
Taskbar and Start Menu
My Computer
My Documents
My Pictures

and others.

It seems I have misplaced my Windows CD.Another thing, I exited Firefox and tried to re-open and I got a "failed to initialize". I logged off, and logged back on and it works. This is the most trouble I've with my computer since this Universa Application crap that I had to get rid off. Other than those things I've never had problems. The lastest thing I INSTALLED on my pc was Picasa by Google.Try doing a system restore from an earlier date System Tools. (Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools).

Alan <><  Without a CD a system restore is the only possibility. No repair installation is possible.Well what if I found the disc. How would I go around fixing it?http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspxThank you all very much.Just a question, will doing this cause me to lose any programs, documents, songs, ETC. or will it just reinstall the windows components that come standard when you install windows XP.A repair install is usually safe, but data should always be backed up regularly and prior to any major changes, if it is that IMPORTANT.

Solve : Balloon tips on XP taskbar?

Answer»

I have another minor annoyance that I have been unsuccessful in trying to research myself.  I am running Windows XP Home on an HP Pavilion a1220n.  I like to move the mouse cursor down to the time in the lower right corner of the screen to see the DATE.  However, sometimes, but not always, only part of the balloon tip shows, and the rest of it is hidden behind the taskbar.  I have seen no rhyme or reason as to why it only does this sometimes.  My taskbar icons NEVER seem to do this; thay always appear over the bar.  Without UNCHECKING the "Keep the taskbar on top of other windows" option in the taskbar properties dialog box, is there some type of setting or modification that I could make that would correct this?  Thank you to all who share their expertise.  I would also like to add that if my computer did this consistantly, I would just consider it to be the "nature of the beast".  The fact that this happens only some of the time is what puzzles me.  http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm] Try Here

Thanks for the reply, patio, but I've seen this utility before, and unless I'm missing something, it can do nothing for my problem.  You may like to try TClockLight (follow the software link in my signature).  I USE the following settings:

Color and Font: Tahoma 8
Format: Custom - "ddd, d/mm/yy\nhh:nn:ss tt"; 12H.

In the space that you normally have the time, you will instead have the date and the time, on two lines, thus:

I'm afraid I'm not sure of the answer to your problem, but you might find that you prefer using this utility anyway. Thanks for the tip, Rob.  I will try that.  I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to do in regards to "following" your signature, but Google found it in a flash.  I was never concerned that there was a problem with my PC; I just always find it odd when something does not work the same way consistantly.  I didn't think about the option of using an add-on program; I was stuck in the "modify the OS on the PC" box!!!  Thanks again!!!No problem!

For future reference, you can click the word "software" that appears at the very bottom of all my posts.Clicked it.  I see.  Thank you, Rob.

Solve : Help with problems I have with my comp?

Answer»

I'm hoping I can get some assistance.

Just now I have a Compaq Presario running Windows ME.

When trying to get pics from my digicam to the pc, I get error messages telling me that some driver files cant be located.

Unfortunately the disk that came with the camera has been lost, so I tried plugging in a mass storage device card READER instead but the same error MESSAGE came up.

The driver file which was missing was NAMED so I downloaded this file but it STILL wont WORK.

I am gettin the yellow exclamation mark beside the mass storage device heading in the system folder.

It has something to do with the USB part of the drivers.  USBCSTM I think it said it was missing.  (although I cant be sure)

When the camera/card reader is connected via USB, thats when the error occurs.

Anyone help me here?

Thanksdo other USB items work? (such as mp3 player, external hardrive, etc.).

Solve : urgent: xp Install problems?

Answer»

Ok,  so,  i have this old gateway  (ATXSTF FED 866)  and the hard drive died a while back,  well,  i didn't need it right away so i just LEFT it in my basement,  now i decided to get it up and running again,  so i got a new hard drive,  and am trying to install windows XP.  first, i discovered that the windows xp home cd, that i had for this computer, was not working for installing windows, it wouldn't let me format the HDD and would SAY i needed a different disk,  well, i happened to have another XP home disc lying around, so i used that,  it formatted and put the files on there no problem,  so now i was in that windows screen as it installed,  then it asked for my name and so on as usual, and then i entered the product key,  and it just stated that it was an invalid product key.    nothing i did changed that,   so i  hard rebooted.

Meanwhile,  i looked on the internet on microsoft's website, and they suggested that it could be the CMOS date and time were WRONG.  and that reminded me that i had stollen the  battery out of there for something else,   and eventually replaced it,  but it obviously reset things,  and sure enough in my BIOS the system date is  [MON 01/01/1990]   and through some long research, i discovered that this was, in fact,  incorrect,  and the date was actually  Sat 08/05/2006    lol.

anyway,   so now i'm in the BIOS and i dont' know how to correct that or what to do,  or even if that's really the problem,  so  thanks alot for any help in advance,  hopefully i can resolve this quickly!!

specs i know of. . .
- Pentium III   866 MHz
- Bios version EA8150A.15A.0006.P04
- Memmory = 384 MB  (3 x 128) (PC133)
- currently no OS  as you knowMost BIOS setups display the date and time and have instructions on how to change them, which are usually at the bottom or one side of the display.  Use the arrow keys and tab key on your keyboard to move to the date or time and then press the keys indicated in the instructions to make the changes.right,  so i was trying to use the wrong key apparently  oops!!   so thanks alot fo the quick response,
I changed the system time and saved it and it is correct now,  however,  when i tried to install again,  i get the same  message "The Product Id you entered is not valid"   and i can either change it, or hit back a few times,  and do nothing else,   nothing changes that,  so i think i have to do the whole hard reboot thing again,  which i'm sure can't be healthy durring a windows installation,  but  what ever,  there is nothing else i can do from there.

here is that microsoft site which i believe applies to my problem  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q310637

i'm really lost here   any help.Well, if it is says it is invalid and you say it is not, CALL Microsoft and have them advise. There may be something else afoot here.Good advice GX.

Solve : Self-Restart, Missing Icons/Taskbar, Winsock Error?

Answer»

Windows XP Media Center Edition
HP Pavilion Desktop /  1 GB RAM
Norton Antivirus / Ad-Aware SE Personal / XoftSpy

I had a run-in a week or two back with a seemingly harmless trojan called Backdoor.Beasty, or something like that. Afterward, and this may be completely unrelated, my computer restarted once on its own.

When I logged back in as the Administrator, the icons and taskbar on my desktop were gone. I could only get them back by endind the explorer.exe process and manually starting it back up with Task Manager > Run > explorer.

On top of that, however, it appears Winsock doesn't work correctly. Programs that need internet access to run complain about 'Windows sockets initialization failed.' I couldn't get my internet to work again until I restarted in safe mode, and performed a system restore to 5 days earlier.

But it seems this exact problem keeps popping up on its own again after several days. The system restore solves every symptom, until several days pass and the computer restarts for no reason and begins the cycle anew. As I've run a trojan scan, two different spyware/adware scanners, and Norton Antivirus multiple times, I think there's something CORRUPTED in my system files. I just dunno why it can be fixed and pop back up on its own at random intervals.

Thank you for your time.Fuse:  I'm a newbie, too, so take these as SUGGESTIONS and not INSTRUCTIONS!  However, I do know that sometimes a few "tricks" are needed to remove malware.  For example, using safe mode and turning off system restore.  You have to do this at times, because you can remove a trojan, and then if you do a restore, your PC goes right back to a point when the trojan was there! I typed this into Google: remove backdoor.beasty.  I saw lots of stuff about it.  Check it out.  Good Luck!Since you're using Norton Anti-virus, visit http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.beasty.i.html and follow the instructions.

Anyway, thanks to everyone who posted trojan removal LINKS, but Norton isn't picking it up anymore and seemed to have deleted whatever variant it was. The only THING I can think of is that some of my windows files are corrupted or missing (system file check prompts me to use the installation disc to recover damaged DLLs, so I'm creating recovery discs for that now).

If SFC doesn't fix it for me, I PLAN on backing up my data files to an external HD, then doing a destructive system recovery back to factory settings. That should probably kill whatever got me in this mess, which I'm thinking more and more must have been some adware or spyware that took some system files with it when it went down. That would certainly fix the problem. (That is, unless the files you save are corrupted, but if it's all documents there should not be trouble.)

All I can say at this point is that any computer will always benefit from having a restore done on it. The reason it isn't done more often is the obvious hassle of putting programs and files back on it. I know I have something on my computer as well and it's messing with the start menu, and the only reason I'm not doing a TDR* on it is the fact that I have some time on my Norton subscription I want to finish before I restore and ditch Norton altogether.

In summary: It may or may not be necessary to do a TDR. But, in any case, your computer will be as fast as the day you bought it (possibly faster, if you upgraded afterward!).

*Totally Destructive Restore

When I used System Restore to jump back a few days, I had to un-install and re-install Norton. It didn't cancel out my subscription, but I did have to supply the install exe (There was an option to pay $10 for them to store it on a server for a year, but I just burned it to a dvd) and my subscription key/serial. But obviously, if you have only one, the other, or neither, it'd be tough to get back after a recovery.

Still, from my work on a few other HP PCs around the house, if your computer came with a Norton AV trial (typically 3 months?) you should get that free trial again when you perform a recovery.

As for my computer though, the SFC didn't solve anything. HP customer support said the recovery discs would be accepted by the SFC scan for use in patching corrupted DLLs, but they aren't. The only thing they could suggest was a partial system recovery, but that's pretty much in keeping with my BACKUP plan anyway.

Solve : Updating Windows using old hard disk?

Answer»

I was USING Win XP Pro with automatic updating. I use dial up network to access internet.  8-)

Recently, I renewed my hard disk and installed same operating system on it. It started downloading windows updates right from the beginning, which is normal.

Can I somehow install the updates, which are already downloaded in my old hard disk. If not wrong, these are stored in folder: c:\windows\software distribution\downloads. If it is possible, it will save me from downloading large data again.

Please help...

jawanda56  Are you starting with SP1 or SP2?  If SP1, you can order SP2 on CD; it's by far the largest update to Win XP SP1.  See http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx.  If your Win XP CD is SP1, you might want to use the slipstreaming technique to create a Win XP SP2 CD that could be used for future situations where you need to format and reinstall Windows.

I'm not sure about installing updates from your old hard drive.  I'll be watching to see what other replies are posted. Thanks for the response.

I have SP2 CD and it was installed immediatly after installing WinXP Pro, both on new and old hard DRIVES. 8-)

My quary is how to retrieve windows updates from my old HDD, somehow?

Looking forward...

jawanda56 You will finder it easier to do it the way Microsoft likes, from the Windows Update site. The only problem comes in is with the WGA. Do you not have a legal installation?LOT of thanks, Soyabean and GK1_Man.

I will follow your advice. My operating system software is not legal, like millions others. Anyway, will continue to get updates untill WGA is received.

Great help...

jawanda56The whole problem can be resolved if it is a legal installation, but with pirated copies we cannot help. I do appreciate your being up front about it, and wish others would too.  Those shiney new WinXP CD's are worth every penny you SPEND on them...

Even if it is overpriced.

patio.   8-)Thanks Potio and GX1_Man,

Lets CLOSE this topic right here.

Thanks for the help...

Solve : Missing file mscoree.dll?

Answer» RECENTLY I run Norton WinDoctor and it detected an error of Missing Program Files.

The detail is:

Missing File: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime\0700\Intel32\DotNetInstaller.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime\0700\Intel32\DotNetInstaller.exe" cannot access a necessary file, "mscoree.dll."

There is no solution suggested by Norton WinDoctor.
How do I fix this?
See this: mscoree.dllThanks for the link.
What is this file for and how could it be missing? Here's some info on the file: http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/dlllibrary/mscoree/

I'm not sure what caused it to be missing.  Perhaps you uninstalled something that uses it and it got removed.  Have you ever uninstalled something and been alerted that a certain file that would NORMALLY be removed by the uninstall process may be used/shared by some other application, and you are prompted to decide whether to allow the file to be removed or not?

Have you tried downloading and installing it yet?I don't remember uninstalling any program that prompts me that message.
I've RELOCATE the file to the directory and Norton WinDoctor finds no same error.
Thanks! It is a required file for Windows:

http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/mscoree/

If you do not download it from the site that Mr. Bean recommends, you should reinstall Windows:

Solve : Is it even possible for ME to install Windows XP??

Answer»

My SATA hard drive recently decided to burn out on me. After running to bestbuy, purchasing another one, and installing it (in exactly the same configuration as the previous one) I am faced with the problem of putting Windows XP Pro on it. It might be important to note here that on the package it says it is "not desighned to provide full version desktop windows licenses" it being an upgrade.

I've RUN FDISK, partitioned the (160 GB) drive and formatted it. My problem is everytime I attempt to load windows by putting in the CD it doesn't read. I tried using floppy boot disks created from the XP utility but upon STARTUP the screen reads "Disk I/O Error". If I try to use the command prompt to read the CD it states that it isn't ready to read or something like that.

Is there something I can do, or would I be better off just leaving the job to a professional?Disk IO error usually referes to a hardware fault with the floppy drive. Has it worked correctly in the past? You could have knocked a cable off while playing in the case, and I suspect that is the issue. Try removing and reseating the floppy cable.

You should be able to boot witth the XP CD. The floppy approach is not needed or recommended. You WILL need the SATA drivers from the floppy that came with the drive. You have to press F6 to load the appropriate driver when you see the prompt onscreen. What make and model of drive?

you will need a previous qualifying version of windows to use the upgrade CD.  Insert that CD when requested.Wow! Thanks a lot for the quick reply . The thing that I'm finding puzzling about this is that the floppy drive does work, I used an old Windows ME boot disk to run FDISK and FORMAT for partitioning and formatting the drive. The only time the Disk I/O Error happens is when I attempt to boot using the Windows XP floppy (maybe its the program that created the 6 boot floppies??? hmmm...)

The drive itself is a Seagate 160 GB SATA HD with a 8MB cache (the same as the original harddrive). I realize that earlier I hadn't installed the drivers for the SATA, but the problem here is that the CD never initializes, however it does boot with the floppy showing something like the following:

Starting Caldera DR-DOS

VDISK R 1.3 Virtual Disk Drive
Virtual Disk Drive: C: (6000 kb, 512 bytes)

Bad or missing command interpreter Please enter a valid
filename (e.g. C:\Command.com) or just press enter to retry.

After reviewing the manual for the hard drive it looks like there should be a prompt for installation of the OS upon the installation of the HD drivers but I can't figure out how to get those suckers installed from the drive floppy or the drive CD. (I'm not sure if this matters or not, but I tried the installation both with and without the drive partitioned and formated as C:)

Any suggestions would be greatly apprectiated

THANXWhy are you trying to boot from floppies rather than an XP CD? Is that a genuine Microsoft disc?I'm trying to boot with floppies because the computer just simply won't boot off of the Windows XP CD I have. I thought it was because maybe there was somehow something wrong with the CD drive drivers after putting in the new HD, but maybe the problem is that the CD itself isn't bootable, maybe it is only an upgrade that needs a version of windows already running on the PC??? If that's the case than the previous version of Windows I have is sitting on my burnt out HD and I only have the "Reinstallation CD" because Dell doesn't include any actual Microsoft OS CDs to back up their preinstalled versions of Windows. The product key is valid for sure, I used this CD to upgrade my OS from XP Home to XP Pro.

The CD itself is a Microsoft CD, but its not a full retail version. I purchased it through my UNIVERSITY's software program whereby microsoft allows the University (in return for a substantial fee I'm sure) to SELL its students deeply discounted software like Windows XP. Quote

Are you absolutely sure that's NOT a full version CD?  Seems unlikely to me.  I have a nephew who attends Ohio State U.  He bought a Win XP Pro & MS Office 2003 package at student pricing.  The Win XP CD was full version.  After his first year, he bought a bigger hard hard, which I installed for him.  It was a normal, full Windows XP installation.

Did you have your BIOS set to boot from CD-ROM?
On the back of the CD sleeve it states "the enclosed media contains software for use with a volume license upgrade on existing PCs that already have a full version operating system license. Microsoft Volue Licenses are not designed to provide full version desktop Windows licenses. A full version Windows licens is supplied at the time of C purchase by the PC manufacturer or may be purchased from a Microsoft retailer a a packaged product or with a non-peripheral computer component from a system builder." Now as to whether or not this means that this is or is not a complete version is a little hard for me to translate. I suppose it could be a full version, but if it is that means there is something wrong with my CD drive because it won't boot from that disk.Stick it in someone else's computer and see if it is bootable.  I stuck that Windows disk in a different computer and lo and behold the disk is bootable. I finally realized that I had exhausted all other options and the problem must be the DVD-ROMs I was putting the CD in. After popping open the case and plugging in a CD-RW ROM I had laying around the system FINALLY booted from the Windows CD and all is well!! Thanks for your suggestions Glad you are all fixed up and thanks for posting back.

Solve : USB devices not working, missing ntkern.vxd?

Answer»

I just got a new mp3 player, as well as a usb flash drive, and they won't work with my Window ME. They DO work with an XP, but I don't have one.

I tried looking in the disk that came with the mp3 player for drivers, but it doesn't have any since my computer is already supposed to work with this thing. I also tried downloading one from the company's website, but the only one I found there didn't help. And the Flash Drive only contains a driver for Windows 98, it didn't come with a CD, and there's nothing on the SITE.

I found that I don't have:

USBSTOR.SYS
USBNTMAP.SYS
VMM32.VXD (NTKERN.VXD)

I did find a lot of solutions to the ntkern.vxd poblem, but all for Win98 except one, which requires the ME startup CD that I don't have.

Does anyone know where I can get the startup CD? Or is there another way to fix my problem without it?  :-?

I DO have a 98 startup CD, but I'm afraid that trying to extract files from it would screw up my computer.  :-/

I posted this on Yahoo Answers, but that was a stupid idea in the first place. No one there knows anything more about fixing computers than I do, so I came here instead.

Any ideas?

RE:squirrel
Is this detailed enough? I don't know too MUCH ELSE about this. (*computer illiterate*)

I'm running on a Compaq iwth Windows Millenium Edition
AMD Duron Processor
128MB RAM

The devices I have are an Imation 512MB Clip Flash Drive and a CreAtive Zen Nano Plus Mp3 player, both USB devices.
My computer does regocnize that they're there, and calls it a USB Mass Storage Device, but that's about all.we need all the details.  Specs of the PC? Specs of the device?  anything else you can tell us?
I cannot vouch for these drivers, but I have used this site with some success in the past.  Use at your own risk:

VMM32.VXD is already functioning on your computer, or you would not be ABLE to start Windows Me:

Solve : Crystal Sound Fusion Device- Help!!?

Answer»

I am having a major problem with this audio program, it took me 2 hours of rebooting and trying different THINGS just to get on the internet....
I am on Windows XP Pro, and havent had any major problems in the last few years until I moved last week and had to just take apart the computer and HOOK it up again, all of a sudden when I boot up I get a ballon message in the taskbar saying 'Found New Hardware, Multimedia Audio Control' if I close it or not the next message is 'New Hardware Found, Crystal Soundfusion (tm) Audio DEVICE'.
No matter what I do I then get a box that comes up that I will display here, and this thing freezes up my taskbar where I cant get on the net or access anything in the taskbar, hence the reason I couldnt even get on the net, I dont have the disc it is asking me for, I even tried going into the audio device folder and turning of the soundfusion device and that doesnt help, so my question is, is there any way of turning off this message that comes up whenever I need to reboot? I dont understand why its coming up now after all these years just from hooking up the computer again, (It didnt even start doing this until a few days after hooking it up and using it) and the sound works fine on my computer as well. I'm not in a position to just run out and buy a new windows XP install disc at the moment, and wouldnt that mean that I would have to reinstall everything?
Any suggestions? :-?No suggestions at all? I could use the help....Well, what we would need are some specifics of the machine - make/model of computer and motherboard, components, is this a legal XP, SERVICE pack number, are all updates applied, anything else unusal, etc.

Details can be helpful.  Microsoft Windows XP Pro
Version 2002
Service pack 1
Intel Pentium 2 processor
400 MHz
128 MB of Ram
I bought it legal, but windows says its not, from what I have read there are quite a few computers with that problem.
I have downloaded that latest updates.
Other then this problem my computer has been running fine, I cant figure out why this problem just showed up out of the blue.

We will need this info. If unsure, download and run Everest Home, run a summary report and post it here.

No SP2 because it is not genuine I suppose, and no Windows updates either? Have you contacted Microsoft?

Why would you spend $130+ for a LEGAL operating system on a PII with 128 RAM, a $25 machine, I have to wonder.   But anyway.....CPU Type      Intel Pentium II, 400 MHz (4 x 100)

Motherboard Name      Hewlett-Packard HP Vectra VLi8

Motherboard Chipset      Intel 82440BX/ZX

I havent contacted Microsoft yet, I thought someone here may have a simple solution until I can fix the problem with not being able to upgrade to Sp2.

If you need any other info just ask, and thank you for the help!

That model does not have a sound driver listed for XP from the HP download site:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=16361&prodSeriesId=32861&prodTypeId=12454&taskId=135&swLang=13

although it does for earlier versions of WIndows. Did you USED to have sound with XP on the machine?I sill have sound, works fine, it always has....
In the Sounds and Audio Device folder, the hardware is listed as Crystal SoundFusion (tm) WDM Audio, and is listed as working properly.Delete the items for sound in Device Manager and reboot the machine. WHat happens?Thanx for the help GX1_Man, I just got fed up trying to deal with the problem, so I had a computer tech guy come over and fix the problem, somehow a few files from the Crystal Fusion program were deleted, no idea how, and he fixed it, next thing I'm doing is getting a legal XP disc and upgrading, thanx again.... Good for you and thanks for posting back.   Quote

Solve : Starting Windows XP in Safe Mode?

Answer»

I have four PCs in my home using Windows XP (2 Laptops and 2 Desktops); one with XP Pro, One with XP MCE, two with XP Home. I know the following issue applies to three of them (probably all four): When I attempt to startup in Safe Mode, and reach the "Advanced" options menu, "Start Normally" is highlighted, and the keyboard ARROW KEYS DO NOT WORK to move the highlight to "Safe Mode". Since this is happening with several PCs, all using WinXP, I wonder if it is an Operating System fault (maybe resulting from the ALMOST daily automatic updates), or if perhaps there are new instructions for opening in Safe Mode (maybe NOT clicking f8). Can anyone tell me how to successfully get into safe mode with all versions of XP? Thank you.Are you using USB KEYBOARDS? Try real PS/2 keyboards on a few of the machines and see if that makes any difference.

Are these all real XP CD's involved? The keyboards on the two Desktop PCs are wireless, with USB receivers; one Dell and one Logitech. The other two PCs are Laptops, with built in keyboards; one Compaq and one HP. All of the Operating SYSTEMS came installed on the PCs, with legitimate CD backups (not yet used).Try pressing the Num Lock key to turn the numbers lock off, and see if the arrow keys work then.

Solve : Junk Files?

Answer»

Is there any way to determine what are junk files on my computer.  I have all kinds of files on my computer, many of which are probably junk.  But, I don't know how to determine if a file is junk or one that is essential without deleting one at a time, and then seeing if it stops any of my programs from working.  This would take way too much time.

Even if there is some type of program out there that I can download that will find junk files

RickIf someone wants to correct me, they are welcome to, but:  How can a program made by strangers POSSIBLY know what you do and do not consider "junk"?  RUN CCleaner.Agreed. CCleaner will get rid of most "junk" and has not ever been shown to damage any installation on this board. Be very careful what you delete on your own as the damage can be catastrophic if you don't know what you are doing.

What kind of junk are you referring to? More than the usual Windows and internet clutter?yes, more than the usual clutter.

Where can I get CCleaner?click on the link posted in reply #2 (third message down from top)ridosan...... ccleaner

dl65  Try Windows Marketplace or Download.com.  I never tried any of them, but I'm sure I remember seeing some tools that claim to scan your system and REMOVE REDUNDANT entries, like multiple shortcuts that just go to the same TARGET, for example.  Also, I just recently read an interesting article about CCleaner.  According to the author, deleting the Old Prefetch data can actually SLOW your computer.   Quote

CCleaner gives the user the option to select what it scans for.  Old Prefetch data can be excluded if the user prefers to exclude it from a scan criteria.

Solve : Windows reboots with DNS reset.?

Answer»

Hi.  I tried searching around the net and on here, but couldn't find anything helpful.  Hopefully someone on here will have some insight for me.  I recently moved to a new house where I can't string a cat5 over to the router, so I went out and bought a wireless card.  It's a $20 ONE, but it works.  Ever since then, this computer will reboot itself.  It used to HAPPEN around 11PM or so, but recently I had reset the router in the middle of the day, and now it is rebooting around 2 PM or so.  I have the same card on another computer on another network, and it hasn't had rebooting problems, though for some reason now it doesn't start.  I have a Belkin card on my laptop with little issues.  It was getting bsod every once in a while, with W2000 and XP.  I also have a newer dell with a linksys card that works just fine.  My mom has a Dell laptop that is hardwired in, and never has problems.  Could this be some type of problem with the router? or possibly with my card? It never HAPPENED when I ran a wire (before i got the wireless card).  I also had completely formatted my hard drive and reinstalled windows (something I like to do every spring) and it still happens.  I am using PC-Cillin 2002, and that's the only program I have start up with the computer, except a bandwidth monitor which i have used for years.  The computer will restart whether I am playing a game, listening to MUSIC, surfing, or if it's just sitting there with no programs open or anything.  The brand of the wireless card is called AirNet.
Thanks for your help,
ZachCan you run that machine for let's say 24 hours or so with the card un-installed ? ?
I doubt it's a piece of hardware re-starting that machine.

But in the meantime go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Advanced and under Startup and Recovery and uncheck "automatically re-boot on errors"

Re-start after making this change...

Solve : Application Error - Explorer.exe Failed to read me?

Answer»

Alright I've been SEARCHING for a fix of this all day to no avail so I've come here for some hope. (no pun intended)

When I close certain applications, ex: mirc, firefox, etc. I get this error and it's driving me nuts. It also happens in firefox just randomly. It doesn't seem to be on any sort of timer.

Application Error - Explorer.exe Failed to read memory

Now I know it's not spyware, hard drive corruption, viruses. I've scanned for those a hundred times. I've also checked to see if my windows system files were up to par by doing sfc /scan now.

I came across some info talking about checking the event viewer so maybe you guys can use these:

Actually, i think this is the only error it shows. Well, all that happens is the explorer freezes, and either restarts automatically or I have to end it and then open it up again. Everything else works fine, but it's getting to be a real pain.

Perhaps SP2 did not install correctly or some software made changes to your system that removed the corrections made by SP2.  I RECOMMEND installing SP2 again.  You can order a CD from Microsoft with the SP2 installer, or if you have a Windows XP CD with SP2, you can reinstall Windows.

It depends on what you have done. I don't have that info from you. Do you have a real Windows CD to reinstall if needed?Cleaning the Windows registry is a little like doing brain surgery.  If it works, the OS is cured, if it doesn't, Windows will speak gibberish and drool for the rest of its life.  Of course, you can give Windows a new "brain" by formatting the hard drive and reinstalling the OS, but you will lose all your programs, Windows settings, documents you have not backed up to a removable media, and all.

Solve : "Error in loading DLL" all over the place?

Answer»

I'm not sure when it started, but I have started SEEING this message popping up in different places in different forms. I have seen it so far in:
* My Network Places
* Recycle Bin
* Control Panel
* Add/Remove Programs
* Network and Dial-up Connections
* Printers
* Search Results
* Excel 2003 (I have the rest of Office installed, but it doesn't come up there)

The error message comes up as an Internet Explorer Script Error like this (apart from in Excel):
Quote

An error has occurred in the script on this page.
Line: 100
Char: 17
Error: Error in loading DLL
Code: 0
URL: file://C:\WINDOWS\Web\nethood.htt
(This is the ONE from My Network Places; the Line, Char, and URL are different in each case)

It makes no difference whether I CLICK Yes or No, it will then not load properly, for example, the Recycle Bin doesn't get the title part down the left hand side, while in Add/Remove Programs, the list of programs installed doesn't appear.

In Excel, I simply get an error titled "Microsoft Visual Basic", which says "Error in loading DLL", with the options being OK or Help. After clicking OK, Excel appears to work fine. In addition MSN Messenger and Search (when opened from the Start Menu) just don't appear when opened.

So far, I have tried repairing Windows from the Windows 2000 disc, and re-installing Internet Explorer. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance for any advice. You got seroiues problems most common is it is caused by VIRUSES and trojans this means or my suggestion would be is to reinstall your computer.. start from scratch..first try running a virus scan with up-to-date virus definitions. then run an anti-spyware program.

then check your HD for errors (check both boxes. restart. scan should run.)

then come back here.

Solve : Outlook 2003 part of MS Office Basic Edition?

Answer»

I recently purchased a new Dell computer, and with it, MS Office Basic Edition.  I BROUGHT a large amount of data over from my older Dell computer that ran the same applications, but with older software.  Most things on the new machine are working well, although I'm having 2 problems with Outlook.  1) periodically when creating an email message, there is a long wait, then I get an error message telling me that MS Word is not available to CREATE my email message (I have this selected as my email editor).  It automatically takes me to the Outlook Editor.   This happens once or twice a day.  Strangely enough, this same error happened on my old computer, which was running an older version of Outlook. 2) the second error message tells me that Outlook is looking for a .pst file that I have already used to import data.  Theoretically, it should be finished with this file because the import was successful and the data resides in my outlook.pst file.  Any suggestions to fix these TWO problems would be appreciated.  Thanks!1.  Not sure how to solve this one, I'm afraid, but IMHO, using Word as your email editor is a bad idea ANYWAY, for two reasons.  First, speed.  Outlook's own editor is quicker.  Second, compatibility.  Word does not produce standards compliant output.  So what looks fine to you in Word+Outlook probably looks rubbish in the recipient's Thunderbird + OpenOffice.  Sorry.

2.  Control panel-->Mail.  You'll find the settings you need there.  REMOVE the rogue .pst file from the data sources list.

Check it out...looks like you need to install some video codecs.I've tried many video codecs found on the web (even from the Winamp site), but none of them work the way I expected.
Before this, avi videos were playing like other videos in Winamp's video window.
But with those codec, the avi videos are playing on a separate window.

I've tried to reinstall Winamp but doesn't help.
And I don't remember I've installed any codec before.

Also, beside this avi problem, I am also unable to VIEW thumbnail on certain websites, since I did the Spybot scan.
Wondering what had it changed on my system.Solve the codec issue with the DviXInstaller.exe from http://www.divx.com/
Thanks.

But STILL have problem with the thumbnail.I'm assuming you've used other players then?

At any time did you have the DIVX player installed?I installed the whole package included in the DviXInstaller.exe which includes a codec, a converter, a player and a web player.
I don't play the avi with the player but with Winamp as usual, and it can be played now after I installed the DviXInstaller.exe package.
Maybe Winamp uses the codec from the DviX program?

Anyway, any thought on the thumbnail issue?
Perhaps I should start it in a new thread to catch more attention due to the subject.
