Solve : IBM Product Recovery program? |
Answer» This is my first posting, so bear with me. While attempting to install Windows XP Service Pack 2 and my IBM ThinkPad, the installation STOPPED and I can no longer boot up my system. The message I get is "winsrv not found". So, while booting I press F11 to access the "IBM PRODUCT Recovery program" and get a couple of choices - "IBM Rapid Restore PC" and "Factory CONTENTS". Which should I use as I obviously don't want to LOSE my data? How are you trying to install Windows XP SP2? Via Windows Update or by use of a Windows XP SP2 CD or by use of an SP2 CD?I was trying to install using Windows Update, but now I can't EVEN boot my system. How are you trying to install Windows XP SP2? Via Windows Update or by use of a Windows XP SP2 CD or by use of an SP2 CD? |

Solve : Major Crash Problems? |
Answer» Okay so I've read a ton of post and there are a few that are similar to my problem but not exactly so I'm gonna post my exact problem. My computer is restarting on it's own. I get some blue screen, but it's up and gone so fast I can't read what it says. After my computer restarts I get the pretty useless "report problem" to microsoft web window. Now let me say first off that it might be that my C: drive is pretty full. I only have about 1.5 G left on it and every few weeks I have to clean the thing out. Could this be the cause? The first time I did it I thought it might be because of overheating. So I turned it of for several hours but it continued to still shut down. I haven't installed anything recently. Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance. I guess I should have mentioned a friend of mine built the computer for me. He's the one that partioned the drive for me. He does know what he's doing. The OS is on the C: drive. The only thing i've ever saved onto the C: drive are software and downloads. But I've been doing that from Day one. So over 3 years now. I wasn't aware you weren't suppose to save files to the C: drive. That's were programs default to. So is that wrong? It's not necessarily wrong, but you're limited as far as space goes on theat drive. If you've been saving to it for over three years, then yes, there may be the possibility of overwritjng files on that drive and screwing the OS. From now on, you may want to start saving to the D drive, since that's where all the sapce is, but the damage may already be done... Don't just take my word for it...you may want to listen to what others have to say regarding this issue. So if anyone else wants to chime in...by all means. I tried to download from that link but it said I did not have permission to do so.You should have access now...Nope still don't. This is the message I get. Natureguy04, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons: Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system? If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be AWAITING activation. Did you register and confirm registration? |

Solve : lock folder xp? |
Answer» Im not sure if this post belong here or in the software, this is a windows problem so ill post it here. Right-click the file/folder \ choose properties \ on the General Tab look towards the bottom of that screen. You'll see a box named "hidden". Put a check in there and hit 'OK'. Now the file/folder can only be accessed through the 'run' command box (Start/Run). BE SURE you know the path to the file or you won't be able to get to it. Umm, they can still eb foudn and accessed extremely easily for those who arent at extreme noob status at handling computers. SIMPLY go into any folder, at the top... tools.... folder options... view... scroll down just a few lines... select show hidden folders. Very easy, not hidden at all... and you dont have to search for it... You could try this, just came across it on the net, I dont know if it works though, I havent tried it.... Keep Your Private Files Private You can deny other user of your computer from reading or accessing your private file by password-protecting it inside a compressed folder. Here's how to do it: In Windows XP, right click wherever you want to put your compressed folder then choose New from the drop-down menu then select Compressed Folder (or winzip if installed). This will ADD a compressed folder with the DEFAULT name New Compressed Folder, change it to whatever folder name you like. Now locate the file and/or folder you wand to protect and move it inside the compressed folder. (You can just copy your files but it will leave your ORIGINAL files unprotected.) In the File menu of the compressed folder choose Add a Password then type your desired password in the dialog box then click ok. After that, you have to enter the password everytime you want to access your private files, that makes your private files unaccessible to other user without your password. Note: Keep a backup of your password protected compressed folder because compressed folder can't keep your files from being deleted. Quote Im not sure if this post belong here or in the software, this is a windows problem so ill post it here. What exactktly are you trying to accomplish and why ? ?> |

Solve : Microsoft Outlook Toolbar? |
Answer» I recently reinstalled my XP operating SYSTEM and am trying to get things back to the way they were before. Did you re-install Office after your rebuild ? ?Uh, nope, fraid not, patio. And, it's Tools, Options, not Options/ Tools. MCJerome, what version of Office do you have? The Office Shortcut bar was not AVAILABLE with Office 2003, so you must haven earlier version. Some info: OFFXP: What Is the Osa.exe File and What Does It Do?Hey guys. Thanks for the help. Nor sure what to make of the info on the link you gave. Seems like a can of worms, perhaps. Juding from what "About..." selection show me in Word and Outlook, it looks like I have Office 2002. I did reinstall Office after I reinstalled my operating system. I went to Word>Tools>Options but can't seem to find a choice to enable the Office toolbar. Just to clarify, this was a bar that I could hang at the top or side of the screen and it was set to disappear unless I waved my mouse near that edge of the screen. It would load on start up and would be there always, even if no Office programs were open. Quote Not sure what to make of the info on the link you gave. Seems like a can of worms, perhaps."... can of worms", what? That makes no sense to me whatsoever. It's a Microsoft page with info in the Osa.exe File, which is the underlying file that makes the Office Shortcut bar work. Do a search to see whether you can find the Osa.exe File on your computer. Go to Start, Programs, Startup, right click on Microsoft Office and select Properties. In the Target box, do you see something like this: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE" -b -l?LOL. Okay. You're right. That was pretty stupid. I just look at those pages sometimes and I go cross eyed. Anway, I don't have that file in the location you specified. In fact, when I go to Start/Programs/I show all the office programs amon the list, but I don't see just play "Microsoft Office." I did a search for OSA.exe and didn't find it. What I did find was just plain OSA with a multi colored flag icon. It is LOCATED in this folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10 Should I open that? Why don't I see a program file for Microsoft Office? I'm USING Office 2003 on my main computer. MS elminated the Office Shortcut Bar from Office 2003. I also have Office 97 on an older computer running Win 98SE. I don't have access to a computer with Office XP, right now. But, I suggest you open the "OSA with a multi colored flag icon" and see whether it launches the Office Shortcut Bar. In my Win 98SE system running Office 97, I see a multi colored flag icon labeled Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar. It's in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office. If I close the Shortcut Bar and then double click on this icon, the Shortcut Bar is restored. |

Solve : Double OS? |
Answer» How can I uninstall of two OS in my computer? Please repeat the question? In his instructions he mentions there being 2 different partitions and suggests formattung... Right, that instructions I posted should work IF Perito's SITUATION is same / similar enough. Patio, does double OS dual booting take up space, meaning... on a 200 gb hard drive, let's say one OS takes 40 gb and the second one takes another 40gb, LEAVING only 120gb of space left to store files and programs? Does that EVER happen or no? Quote from: elxr06 on September 29, 2007, 12:20:08 PM does double OS dual booting take up space, meaning... on a 200 gb hard drive, let's say one OS takes 40 gb and the second one takes another 40gb, leaving only 120gb of space left to store files and programs? each OS takes up as much space as it would if it was the only one. So two will take up twice as much. My XP install is only 12 GB and it's been growing for 6 YEARS. |

Answer» I cannot burn cds. i have tried everything; different brands of blanks, slower speeds, different programs than only trying windows media, etc. I figured out my ASPI isn't connected, however I'm simply stuck, and DONT know wut to do. Please help. Thank you for any replies. I've tried a number of programs, iTunes, Windows Media Player, Real, I think a few more. As far as I know the drive I have is just a cd/dvd drive if thats the question. And the answer to what cdr's Im using is memorex and maxwell, so I think it's beyond that.If what you have is just a CD/DVD ROM Drive (read-only), you cannot burn CD with it. You need a burner (read and write) instead.Right clik on that drive in My Computer and see what it is called...it SEEMS like you dont have a burn capable drive. :-/ |

Solve : no sound in websites? |

Answer» Hi, wondering if anyone can help me out. Suddenly i've lost sound in websites such as you tube, google video etc. I can still play mp3s, videos etc, but there is no sound with video on websites. I haven't changed any settings, or downloaded any new software, it just started happening. The little VOLUME control in my taskbar has dissapeared and when i go to "sounds and audio devices" in control panel, there is no audio device. Apparently all the audio hardware is WORKING correctly,so i am stumped...and annoyed...NO YOU TUBE!!! :-?Do you have sound anywhere else?Tell US more about your computer. Which version of Windows? Using onboard sound or an add-on sound card? Do you have the drivers for your audio device? If not, do you know where to get them? This problem is not specific to the web. Do you have onboard sound, or an add-on card, do you know? If the former, check it is still ENABLED in the BIOS. If the latter, check the card is still properly seated. |

Solve : USB Drive not displayed in My Computer? |
Answer» Recently when I plug in the USB drive (any brand), WINDOWS XP would recognise it and install the proper drivers until it is "ready to use". Turn off the machine. It is shown under Storage->Removable Storage->Media but not in My Computer. I know you answered this but are you sure it's formatted ? ? patio. 8-) Quote It is shown under Storage->Removable Storage->Media but not in My Computer.Where is "Storage->Removable Storage->Media"? How do you get to that screen? It may need to be assigned a station letter. Quote QuoteIt is shown under Storage->Removable Storage->Media but not in My Computer.Where is "Storage->Removable Storage->Media"? How do you get to that screen? Right clik on My Computer/select Manage and it's on the left side...OK, thanks. Of course, if it shows up there, it should also be in My Computer under Devices with Removable Storage, right? If I connect my USB flash drive, it immediately shows up in both places. And, I never assigned a letter to it. Windows took care of that. Quote It is formatted and working fine with my own computer at home.Has that particular flash drive ever worked with the computer in your office? Does the flash drive REQUIRE USB 2.0? Do you know for sure that the port you're trying to use on the office computer is USB 2.0? The computer in my office is a Dell Dimension 3000 so it's definitely a USB2.0. The same thumb drive used to work with the same computer before this happened. The issue happened after a few weeks since I last used the thumb drive on the computer. And the same thumb drive is working fine on any other computer. The thumb drive is a Kingston Data Traveler 1GB.Are you currently using other USB 2.0 devices on that computer? Do you have any other USB devices you can try on the same USB port that's giving you this problem, as a troubleshooting step to verify the port is working OK? If you open Device Manager and scroll down to Universal Serial Bus controllers, do you see an item called USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller? Quote The computer in my office is a Dell Dimension 3000 so it's definitely a USB2.0. Try formatting it on a machine that it works on... Then copy a few small files to it... Do you have any other USB devices you can try on the same USB port that's giving you this problem, as a troubleshooting step to verify the port is working OK? I have tried with a card reader which suppose to have 4 removable drives shown in My Computer, but it only shows 2 of them. I tried with a digital camera (direct connection) and it happens the same like the thumb drive - detected but not shown in My Computer. The same situation happens to all other USB ports on the machine. Solve : Screen image moving constantly? |
Answer» The screen image moves up and down CONSTANTLY. It occurs on line 99% of the time. I was lucky it didn't happen on this forum. It occurs off line when writing a letter in WordPro. Just signed up with this forum and would appreciate assistant. Thanks, Ed Wieder Quote The screen image moves up and down constantly. Are you talking about image jitter or the image contracting and EXPANDING or is the image rolling? Jitter - try a different refresh rate C and E - you might be SOL. Repair or replace. Rolling - Horizontal hold. If your monitor has an adjustment use that No adjustment - use lower horizontal refresh rate If neither works - repair or replace. Image rolls up and then rolls down at a very fast rate. How do I change refresh rate? The refresh rate was at 85 Hertz. I changed it to 60 Hertz. However, it changed back to 85 Hertz. What do I do now? Thanks, EdYou probably didn't press "Apply" Or you didn't install monitor drivers.ejw71, if I understand you correctly, the behavior sounds more like erratic scrolling by the mouse. Does this occur with applications other than WordPro? Even if you could lower the refresh rate to 60, I know I would not want to use my monitor at that refresh rate. I notice the flicker. Raptor, I did click on "Apply". Atempted the change several times to no avail. I didn't do anything to/with monitor drivers. How do I install monitor drivers? Soybean, When off line , other than WordPro, the rolling of screen image doesn't happen the best I can remember.First answer Soybean's question. How old is that WordPro software? Your OS? What mouse do you have? Have you tried updating or reinstalling your mouse driver?Does it happen in Internet Explorer as well? Could you provide us with a screenshot? You could have your resolution set HIGHER than the monitor's, causing your COMPUTER to display only part of the screen on your monitor. This happens usually on laptops. Then when the screen goes up and down you are SIMPLY scrolling the rest of the screen. What is your resolution, and the max your monitor can use? |

Solve : Install Windows XP, no floppy, no BIOS access? |
Answer» Quote QuoteAn ESD bracelet is about 5 bucks... And they come in a lot of colour styles.Laptops are NOT the same as desktops. The BIOS password is not meant to be be got around in the ways that you can on a desktop. Check with the manufacturer, but I'll bet you end up needing a new mainboard.UPDATE: I downloaded the "Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 Utility: Setup DISKS for Floppy Boot Install" from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=15491F07-99F7-4A2D-983D-81C2137FF464&displaylang=en . Once I had all 6 floppy disks ready I followed all the steps only to get an error screen after installing the final disk :-/ : One thing that could help is that I found a new startup menu. I only saw it because the external floppy DRIVE delayed the startup procedure by half a second. This allowed my to see an extra OPTION "Press F12 for boot device selection menu". When I pressed F12 I was given these options: 1. Hard Drive 2. CD-ROM/DVD Drives 3. Removable Devices 4. Network Boot By selecting "3. Romoveable Devices" I was able to try to boot from the 6 floppy disks, but that was unsuccessful. However, when I rebboted and chose "2. CD-ROM/DVD Drives" everything went fine . Solve : Clarisworks 3.0 won't run? |
Answer» I picked up an "old" laptop at a back yard SALE for $5.00.It's an Epson Actionnote 650.I started it and opened several windows to see what was on the hard drive. I double clicked "Clarisworks" and it ran SUCCESSFULLY. Before I downloaded the manual for the laptop,I fooled around with the video drivers, trying to bring up color on the LCD.The screen went blank and I couldn't bring it back no matter what I did! I obtained the Windows 3.1 setup disks and reinstalled the operating system and got a display.I also bought Brian Livingston's "Windows 3.1 Secrets" and followed instructions for installing Clarisworks (which was resident on the hard drive) in the 'Program Manager-Applications' window, using the 'Properties' Dialog Box.The icon for Clarisworks showed up in the 'PM-Applications' window. When I double click the icon, the screen goes blank, the horizontal cursor blinks in the UPPER left corner of the screen, the hard drive spins for about 4 to 5 seconds and the 'PM-Applications' window reappears...namely,Clarisworks refuses to run! It seems as though the OS is searching for something and can't find it. After searching through the directory trees in 'File Manager',I edited Autoexec.bat to add items to the Path= statement to enable a wider search and I still can't call up Clarisworks. I am bambozzled. Help! |

Answer» i am trying to upgrade from 2000 pro to xp pro i get an error message that says signature for windows 2000 prof setup is invalid error code 8006003Do you have the Win2K CD handy ? ? upgrade from 2000 pro to xp proYou'll be s-or-r-y! Quote Quoteupgrade from 2000 pro to xp proYou'll be s-or-r-y! That's a definite downgrade in my book!Don't be daft, Windows XP Home is a much better choice for any illiterate computer USER than Windows 2000 is. And even for literate computer users if you ask me, I never felt the need to use Windows 2000 instead of Windows XP...Don't be daft, XP uses more resources and forces you into the registration/validation merry-go-round. As a trade off XP gives you a crappy firewall and 'system restore' which is excellent to screw your computer with. Quote Don't be daft, XP uses more resources and forces you into the registration/validation merry-go-round. I've got to AGREE with you on the firewall. I think the fire got extinguished a long time ago and the wall must have become porous. But still, if Windows 2000 is so GOOD for home users, why did Microsoft bother bringing out Windows XP Home? They could as well have brought out Windows 2000 Home. Microsoft brought out XP to stop people using pirated copies of their OSs. They put a few bells & whistles into W2K, called it XP and conned the world. Quote Microsoft brought out XP to stop people using pirated copies of their OSs. You're PROBABLY right. Good thing I got it for real cheap, though. |

Solve : Win 2K Install- Lost Product ID - SOLVED? |
Answer» Hello, everyone. Thank you for trying to help me. If it is installed on a machine you can retrieve that number, BUT if all you have is a CD and a blank hard drive you are SOL. Sorry. Unfortunately, the latter is my situation. THANKS for the help.Contact the University bookstores in the area if you are still a student...mine was 20bucks. patio. 8-) Quote Contact the University bookstores in the area if you are still a student...mine was 20bucks. I'm no longer a student, so I can't access the service anymore. It was a partnership with Microsoft that I'm not even sure exists anymore, hence I can't trying going back to get the ID. I found a product ID online that someone posted, but of course it wouldn't match the one I'm missing. Does anyone know if I could use that ID without having any problems down the road? Thanks again for taking the time to address this.It would not be legal according to Microsoft even if it did work. You either need to buy the software from somewhere (eBay?) to get a legal copy or CALL Microsoft to pay for a license. They will be happy to ASSIST as Win2000 is still a supported product. |

Solve : OEM Windows? |
Answer» MAJOR manufacturers give you a recovery CD labeled with their brand. Small shops that custom build USUALLY MAKE one for you and they are not custom stamped. I don't think you will have a problem as the shop has obviously paid the fees for an OEM provider. (Small shops can't afford to buy thousands of custom stamped CD's)You are right, it's a family business run by FATHER and son, and in my view they both SEEM to be honest people, the computer I bought was in fact custom built and not b ad at all for the price I paid . Thanks again for all the information I received since yesterday . I run the "keyfinder" and the number matched the one on the case Charki:) |
