Solve : Internet Explorer is currently running with add-ons disabled?

Answer»

This message keeps popping up WHENEVER I change the web address and is preventing me from ADDING Adobe Flash Player. I go to INTERNET Tools and find everyhting is "enabled", so I can't do anything to correct this problem. Restarting Explorer or the computer doesn't change this. If anyone knows how to fix this, your advice WOULD be very much appreciated. Thanks, EdHere's a pdf with a possible solution:

Solve : Ongoing crash problem...?

Answer»

Hello all... I'm new here and was hoping someone could give me some solid advice regarding an issue thats been happening with this pc for a while.  I have a Dell XPS Gen 2, which has a Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz processor, a Radeon 9800 128meg agp 4x video card, and ORIGINALLY came with 512 megs of PC3200 ram which I upgraded to 1gig.

Basically what happens is the PC completely freezes and ends up looping the last sound that was playing over and over and I have to end up holding in the power button to turn it off & restart it.  95% of the time this occurs when I'm using more graphically intensive programs (about once every hour with AutoCAD, and OCCASIONALLY w/ Photoshop, and a few video GAMES I play) but is not limited to these occasions.

I've had a problem with this pc since basically I upgraded the ram in it years ago, which was within a day of purchasing it, and since then has been getting steadily worse -- originally maybe every 3-4 days, to daily, to recently really become ANNOYING and a hindrance, crashing 4-5 times a night.  I've had several suggestions from people I know (reformat your HDD, video card failing, replace the ram, install more fans in the computer) but theyre all over the map and nobody can really tell for sure.  Ive ran tests on the ram years ago when this was first happening and it was showing the ram as functioning fine.

What should I do to pinpoint the cause of this issue?  Does this definitely sound like a hardware issue or could it be a software problem?  Are there virii/trojans out there capable of doing this sort of thing?

If this belongs in the hardware forum, my apologies... moderator please move the thread if its needed.  Thanks in ADVANCE for any help/suggestions given.it hard to tell you with a guess, so what we need to do are try to do one by one steps ok?
have you try taking out the add on card, graphic card, sound card, etc?
then use your computer see if its happen again"I've had a problem with this pc since basically I upgraded the ram in it years ago...".  Major clue here.  Have you tried removing/replacing the troublesome RAM?

Alan <><  try doing registry clean on computer, then do virus / trojan scan, then do anti spyware scan. doesn't matter what order you do it in.

then if computer is clean ... then take out ram

if problem occurs without that ram, then it should be ram problem. if not, reinstall ram carefully and see what you get.

good luck and let us know how you're going with this issue.

Solve : IBM Product Recovery program?

Answer»

This is my first posting, so bear with me.   While attempting to install Windows XP Service Pack 2 and my IBM ThinkPad, the installation STOPPED and I can no longer boot up my system.  The message I get is "winsrv not found".  So, while booting I press F11 to access the "IBM PRODUCT Recovery program" and get a couple of choices - "IBM Rapid Restore PC" and "Factory CONTENTS".  Which should I use as I obviously don't want to LOSE my data?   How are you trying to install Windows XP SP2? Via Windows Update or by use of a Windows XP SP2 CD or by use of an SP2 CD?I was trying to install using Windows Update, but now I can't EVEN boot my system.

Solve : Major Crash Problems?

Answer»

Okay so I've read a ton of post and there are a few that are similar to my problem but not exactly so I'm gonna post my exact problem. My computer is restarting on it's own. I get some blue screen, but it's up and gone so fast I can't read what it says. After my computer restarts I get the pretty useless "report problem" to microsoft web window. Now let me say first off that it might be that my C: drive is pretty full. I only have about 1.5 G left on it and every few weeks I have to clean the thing out. Could this be the cause? The first time I did it I thought it might be because of overheating. So I turned it of for several hours but it continued to still shut down. I haven't installed anything recently. Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My computer info:
I'm running Window's XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP 2
AMD Athlon XP 3000+
2.17 GHz 1.5 GB Ramhey natureguy:  do you have any anti-VIRUS software and have you DONE scans in safe mode?

The cause of this could be several things.

One option is to GO to Start > Run > MSCONFIG,

when the System Configuration Utility box opens, go to the startup tab and uncheck alot of the boxes.  (however don't uncheck Virus Scan startups, System Tray, or Scan Registry.

apply and then restart your computer.
You also might want to open up your computer, clean it, reseat your ram/heatsink/cpu/fan/cards and clear out the dust.

Let us know how things work out.yes I do have McAfee running. I'm not quite sure what you mean be a scan in safe mode. I've done the MSCONFIG in the past but will do it again right now. I will also do the the cleaning. I've never done that and my computer is 3 years old. Thanks for the tips. The first thing I'd do is backup everything that's important to you...and I'd do it ASAP...just in case it's a failing hard drive.

Another thing I'd do is to make sure any unecessary programs are removed using Add/Remove Programs...

How big is your current hard drive?

Something else you may want to look at:  Malware GuideOkay as I was reading the last post it shut down again. My Drive is 200 G drive split into my C: and D: drive. The C: drive has 15.4 total and has 1.90 G left. The D: drive has 170 G total and has 81.5 G left available. I've done the ADD/Remove several times and have deleted everthing I am pretty sure I don't need. I have some of that Spyware software but haven't run it in awhile. I'll download a newer version and do a scan. Got a question or two for you...

Did you partition the drive or did it come that way?

Who's the manufacturer and what's the model number of your computer?

If you have the OS on one of those partitions and have been saving files to it...there's a good chance you may have inadvertently overwritten some of the operating system files...

If the OS is on the C drive...the above is a possibility.  Hopefully you've been saving to the D drive.  In any case...you may want to answer the above questions for me...and then follow the directions of the Malware Guide link I sent you.I guess I should have mentioned a friend of mine built the computer for me. He's the one that partioned the drive for me. He does know what he's doing. The OS is on the C: drive. The only thing i've ever saved onto the C: drive are software and downloads. But I've been doing that from Day one. So over 3 years now. I wasn't aware you weren't suppose to save files to the C: drive. That's were programs default to. So is that wrong? Quote from: Natureguy04 on October 01, 2007, 10:16:30 PM

It's not necessarily wrong, but you're limited as far as space goes on theat drive.  If you've been saving to it for over three years, then yes, there may be the possibility of overwritjng files on that drive and screwing the OS.

From now on, you may want to start saving to the D drive, since that's where all the sapce is, but the damage may already be done...

Don't just take my word for it...you may want to listen to what others have to say regarding this issue.  So if anyone else wants to chime in...by all means.

I tried to download from that link but it said I did not have permission to do so.You should have access now...Nope still don't. This is the message I get.

Natureguy04, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

Solve : start up problems illegal op?

Answer»

so i got an OLDER computer running windows 98 family uses it for emails and school.  past few days everytime we turn it on it has the illegal opperations thing come up and turn off explorer wich i know is bad it doesn't come back and just sits there displaying the desktop picture, ctrl+alt+del shows nothing to be active/running. computer is basically useless at this point. any ideas?
350 mhz, windows 98, anything else ya need to know ask and i'll try and find out.Do you have anti-virus protection?  Have any spyware removal tools installed?  What type of Internet connection?  Dialup, DSL, cable?  Do you use a firewall?it's got anti virus in the way of avg, it did have spyware tools last time i used it, cable inet connection, no firewall i beleive unless the router has one.A formatting of the hard drive and fresh installation of WIN 98 would be a good solution.  This would erase everything on the hard drive.  Would that be a big problem, as far as losing school-related files, etc.?  Do you have your Win 98 CD?  Ever done this before?i have done a FORMAT before am actually in the process of try when i start up with the disc in it says i'm mising a file "command.com" it makes me type it in and i get the a drive command prompt typing anything there does nothing switching to c drive yields the same i think we may need to start looking at purchasing a new computer.Which disk do you mean?  A Startup Disk (floppy disk) created with Win 98?  yup
Can you type the dir command and see a listing of what's on C?

You might try downloading a boot disk from http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htmyup it lists 11 files is there anyhting i am looking for?
No, just wondered whether drive C was really being recognized.  Why only 11 files?  What happened to the Windows files?

Anyway, can you use the Format command, using the boot disk?nope time for a new computer i guess oh well that one was comming up on 9 years with no work done to it can't complain at all.Yeh, you can't complain about that.  If you wanted, you could see if you can get your hands on a used hard drive and try installing it.  I think your problem could be a failed hard drive.  I belong to a computer group based in Newark, Ohio.  They have an annual drive to collect old computers.  They also refurbish some of them, and they give away some of the components, including hard drives, that are removed from these computers.  ebay is another option for a used hard drive.  Or, maybe LOOK for a good rebate deal on a new hard drive if you know you could make good use of it if it won't work in the old computer.

Keep in mind that the old computer surely has a limitation as far as hard drive size that it will recognize.  But, there are ways of working around that, such as a drive "overlay" provided by the hard drive manufacturer.

I STILL have a Pentuim that's now 11 years old.  The OS is Win 98SE.  I have a 15.3 Gig hard drive in it; partitioned into two partitions.  It is formatted FAT32.

Umm, they can still eb foudn and accessed extremely easily for those who arent at extreme noob status at handling computers. SIMPLY go into any folder, at the top... tools.... folder options... view... scroll down just a few lines... select show hidden folders.

Very easy, not hidden at all... and you dont have to search for it...  You could try this, just came across it on the net, I dont know if it works though, I havent tried it....

Keep Your Private Files Private

You can deny other user of your computer from reading or accessing your private file by password-protecting it inside a compressed folder. Here's how to do it:

In Windows XP, right click wherever you want to put your compressed folder then choose New from the drop-down menu then select Compressed Folder (or winzip if installed). This will ADD a compressed folder with the DEFAULT name New Compressed Folder, change it to whatever folder name you like. Now locate the file and/or folder you wand to protect and move it inside the compressed folder. (You can just copy your files but it will leave your ORIGINAL files unprotected.)

In the File menu of the compressed folder choose Add a Password then type your desired password in the dialog box then click ok.

After that, you have to enter the password everytime you want to access your private files, that makes your private files unaccessible to other user without your password.

Note: Keep a backup of your password protected compressed folder because compressed folder can't keep your files from being deleted.

Uh, nope, fraid not, patio.  And, it's Tools, Options, not Options/ Tools.
MCJerome, what version of Office do you have?  The Office Shortcut bar was not AVAILABLE with Office 2003, so you must haven earlier version.

Some info: OFFXP: What Is the Osa.exe File and What Does It Do?Hey guys.  Thanks for the help.  Nor sure what to make of the info on the link you gave.  Seems like a can of worms, perhaps.

Juding from what "About..." selection show me in Word and Outlook, it looks like I have Office 2002.

I did reinstall Office after I reinstalled my operating system.

I went to Word>Tools>Options but can't seem to find a choice to enable the Office toolbar.
Just to clarify, this was a bar that I could hang at the top or side of the screen and it was set to disappear unless I waved my mouse near that edge of the screen.  It would load on start up and would be there always, even if no Office programs were open.

Quote
Not sure what to make of the info on the link you gave.  Seems like a can of worms, perhaps.

"... can of worms", what?  That makes no sense to me whatsoever.  It's a Microsoft page with info in the Osa.exe File, which is the underlying file that makes the Office Shortcut bar work.

Do a search to see whether you can find the Osa.exe File on your computer.  Go to Start, Programs, Startup, right click on Microsoft Office and select Properties.  In the Target box, do you see something like this: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE" -b -l?LOL.  Okay.  You're right.  That was pretty stupid.  I just look at those pages sometimes and I go cross eyed.

Anway, I don't have that file in the location you specified.  In fact, when I go to Start/Programs/I show all the office programs amon the list, but I don't see just play "Microsoft Office."
I did a search for OSA.exe and didn't find it.  What I did find was just plain OSA with a multi colored flag icon.  It is LOCATED in this folder
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10

Should I open that?

Why don't I see a program file for Microsoft Office?  I'm USING Office 2003 on my main computer.  MS elminated the Office Shortcut Bar from Office 2003.  I also have Office 97 on an older computer running Win 98SE.  I don't have access to a computer with Office XP, right now.  But, I suggest you open the "OSA with a multi colored flag icon" and see whether it launches the Office Shortcut Bar.

In my Win 98SE system running Office 97, I see a multi colored flag icon labeled Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar.  It's in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office.  If I close the Shortcut Bar and then double click on this icon, the Shortcut Bar is restored.

Solve : Double OS?

Answer»

How can I uninstall of two OS in my computer? Please repeat the question?

Thanks

Tony sORRY FOR THE MIX UP. I DIDNT NOTICE THAT MY NUMERIC PAD IS NOT WORKING.

ANYWAY, MY QUESTION SHOULD HAD BEEN, "HOW TO UNINSTALL ONE OF TWO OS IN MY COMPUTER?"

There was a time when my computer prompted me to reboot with the OS CD and I did and later when I restarted the computer, the computer is asking which of the 2 OS will I use and they are both OS with the same name maybe of different version only.

Since it is eating up my memory I want to uninstall anyone of the two.

Thank you for whatever help you can give.

PeritoWe will need to know what operating systems you have installed and which one you wish to uninstall.hmm....i'm not sure if having a dual boot actually takes up memory.

i think one of the 2 OSs remains dormant whilst the other is in use.

so...if it's your memory you're worried about, i'm not sure if it's the dual-boot which is causing it.JXY, Like many new computer users, when Perito says "memory" I think he means "disk space", not RAM.

Perito, if you have a file C:\BOOT.INI maybe you could copy it on here for us?

And also look in Windows Explorer to see how the Windows directories are labelled...
Post that info here as well.Hello everyone and thanks to all who responded. It is really my pleasure to thank you all.

Anyway, my systems are XP, so if the computer at the start would ask me which of the OS I would prefer to use I would just press enter anyway they are the same but of different versions only probably. What I would like to do is not to opt for any of the two just like when I open up other computers I am using elsewhere.

I am also not good with computer for files you want me to paste for you. Sorry. I am not that good to search for that file.

TEaching me how to fish is one of my favorite doctrine too.

Well I hope you can help me.

A million thanks to all of you who found time to share their precious moments for me.

Perito from the Philippines.wow...sentimental.

go to my computer > C Drive > search for the folder named "WINDOWS" and check the labels inside it.yes sentimental for I thought very few would respond because this querry is free.

I share my time and money to the poor and the sick children too.

Anyway, I cannot understand what you mean by "labels". I do not know what i am looking for under windows.

ThanxGo to Start/Search and type in boot.ini and hit Enter.
When the file comes up right click and open it with Notepad.
Copy and paste it and post it here...
DO NOT make any changes to it until we've had a looksee...Go to following website: http://ezinearticles.com/?How-To-Remove-One-Operating-System-from-a-Dual-Boot-Windows-XP-Computer&id=52280

Right, that instructions I posted should work IF Perito's SITUATION is same / similar enough.

Patio, does double OS dual booting take up space, meaning... on a 200 gb hard drive, let's say one OS takes 40 gb and the second one takes another 40gb, LEAVING only 120gb of space left to store files and programs?

Does that EVER happen or no? Quote from: elxr06 on September 29, 2007, 12:20:08 PM

each OS takes up as much space as it would if it was the only one. So two will take up twice as much. My XP install is only 12 GB and it's been growing for 6 YEARS.

Solve : LG Flatron L1718S loses half the screen 1024 768?

Answer»

Dear all,

Hi, this is my first post to these forums and I'm sorry the first thing I do is beg for help, but such is my understanding of computers that any help I offer will most likely be disastrous!

Anyhow, I recently purchased an LG Flatron L1718S 17" flat screen monitor.  It works fine and, after a bit of trial and error, I settled on a screen resolution of 1024 by 768 pixels.  That WORKED well until yesterday, whereupon half the screen suddenly failed to load or something!  My password protection is happily in the centre but when Windows itself loads up the screen is in completely the wrong place, as if the right hand limit was right down the centre of the screen rather than to the right hand side.  Altering the settings of the screen using its own controls can MOVE it slightly to the right, but nowhere like all the way to the other side.

I've rectified the problem by changing my resolution to 1152 by 864 but this is a LITTLE too small for me to read comfortably and I am WORRIED that the problem will turn up at this resolution, and the next and the next...  Similarly changing back to 1024 causes the same bizarre half screen effect.

Does ANYONE know why this is happening and can you please suggest a solution?

Cheers,

jamesHave you tried re-installing your video drivers ? ?
Also power down and re-check all cable connections...Are you making use of Nvidia SLI or ATI Crossfire?

The native resolution of your monitor is most likely 1024x786, perhaps even 1280x1024. Any other resolution just doesn't work right.

I have no clue what this means but it wont allow me to GET to the login screen...all I get is an HP blue desktop and then it REVERTS back to give me the message again.  I tried starting in safe mode and it did the same thing.  I havent downloaded anything recently so I dont know why it would do this...
I have an HP with XP...Before Windows loads, press F8 and choose last known good configuration.I tried that too and it still does the same thing...
I did put Style XP program on my computer a couple of weeks ago...I dont know if that would affect anything but I CANT get on to check...Can you press CTRL + ALT + DEL when you're in Windows and manually shut down any non-essential system process?no I cant even get past the windows startup, to the login screen...Take a look at a few of the Google hits http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22Value+Creation+Failed%22+at+line+599&btnG=Google+Searchit seems like all of those people were able to actually get on their comuter...but I cant do anything whatsoeverI think this means a reformat and reinstall for you, then.so there is no other ALTERNATIVE!!???!!
what is this problem caused by??I think it has something to do with the program I downloaded called Style XP...The problem is, how can I fix it if I cant even get to the main page, even in safe mode...Mentobe.......  Unfortunately sometimes when ones downloads tweeking programs , they don't work as anticipated for various resons.
If you are unable to access your machine , either in normal or in safe mode...... I dont see any option other than what Raptor has already suggested ........ A format and a nice clean install.

Solve : Help Partitioning/Creating Logical Driv on Windows?

Answer»

Under 'Create a Partition or Logical Drive' on Windows Help and Support, it says to go into Disk Management and "Right-click an unallocated region of a basic disk, and then click New Partition".

Problem is, I don't have an unallocated region of basic disk to work with. How can I rectify this?

Currently, I just have C on my computer, but on my old one (which I didn't set up myself) I had F, E and G as WELL and I want to have the same again.

Thanks,
Rob  You can't. You probably used everything to install Windows XP and if you want to repartition, you'll have to reformat or use Partition Magic(click)Actually, I may have another solution. Partition magic will work, but it's not cheap. There is another program besides to partition magic though that will allow you to non-destructively re-size a partition and t is totally free (I like free ), HOWEVER I have not yet tried this program, so progress at your own risk. I may have TIME tonight to throw together a spare PC and try a partition re-size, so I'll see if I can post my results and a walk through of specific steps then. But, if you want to go ahead and download the program and burn it to a CD to get ready, here's what you do:

The program I am speaking of is called gparted live cd. All you have to do is download the ISO, or zipped ISO from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=173828 and then burn the ISO to a CD.

If you have NEVER burned an ISO disk image please tell us and we'll walk you through the process as it's a bit different than just burning a normal cd. Also, you will need to make sure your PC will boot from the CD-ROM drive. Again, if you have no idea what I am talking about just let us know and we'll explain.

Anyway, I'll see if I can get around to testing this program out later on tonight.Gnome Parted is great, and does what is says on the tin.  Some familiarity with Linux is a huge bonus though, because it uses Linux conventions when describing hard drives, partitions, etc.

Solve : USB Drive not displayed in My Computer?

Answer»

Recently when I plug in the USB drive (any brand), WINDOWS XP would recognise it and install the proper drivers until it is "ready to use".
But when I go to my computer (or explorer), the Removable Disk(s) is/are not there.Turn off the machine.
Plug in the USB drive and re-boot.
Right clik on My Computer and select "manage".
Does the USB disk show up there ? ?
You neglected to mention if this is a USB thumbdrive or an external USB HDD.
Is the drive formatted ? ?
If not Windows will not recognise it.
This is one example of why we ask for more info before we attempt to troubleshoot...It is a thumb drive (I thought that would be clear by "USB Drive" otherwise "External HDD", never SEEN anyone called an Ext HDD as USB Drive).

It is formatted and WORKING fine with my own computer at home.
The problem is with my computer in my office.

Anyway, the thumb drive is not with me now. Will try your suggestion on Monday.
Thanks.I'd like to say i've never seen anyone call an external HDD a "USB drive" as well...

However i spend way too much time here and i've seen it all....

Let us know how you get on...

Right clik on My Computer/select Manage and it's on the left side...OK, thanks.  Of course, if it shows up there, it should also be in My Computer under Devices with Removable Storage, right?  If I connect my USB flash drive, it immediately shows up in both places.  And, I never assigned a letter to it.  Windows took care of that. Has that particular flash drive ever worked with the computer in your office?  Does the flash drive REQUIRE USB 2.0?  Do you know for sure that the port you're trying to use on the office computer is USB 2.0?
The computer in my office is a Dell Dimension 3000 so it's definitely a USB2.0.
The same thumb drive used to work with the same computer before this happened.
The issue happened after a few weeks since I last used the thumb drive on the computer.
And the same thumb drive is working fine on any other computer.
The thumb drive is a Kingston Data Traveler 1GB.Are you currently using other USB 2.0 devices on that computer?  Do you have any other USB devices you can try on the same USB port that's giving you this problem, as a troubleshooting step to verify the port is working OK?

If you open Device Manager and scroll down to Universal Serial Bus controllers, do you see an item called USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller? Quote

I have tried with a card reader which suppose to have 4 removable drives shown in My Computer, but it only shows 2 of them.
I tried with a digital camera (direct connection) and it happens the same like the thumb drive - detected but not shown in My Computer.
The same situation happens to all other USB ports on the machine.

Solve : windows activiation, plz help?

Answer»

I buy a laptop "dell" comes with Windows installation CD (home edition with SP2), i did formating to the hard disk and install Windows from this CD, it  did not ask me any serial number or PRODUCT key, but it have some simple problems so i REPAIR it using the same installation CD. and enter the product key on lable  on my laptop when windows ask that through installation, and windows accept this key
now he ask me the activation code within only 30 days, so i follow the steps of activation and chose register and activatie windows at the same time.
after that he ask me the product key, in fact "New Key", i enter the same number code on the lable, be he refuse that and ask the key or "new key" what can i do to solve this problem?
Choose to activate by Internet, not by phone. And this is the original CD that came with this Dell? And it was purchased directly from Dell by you?

If the answer to both of these is not yes, then you have a problem.

How about some details about the CD and the computer?Yes, i chose activation by internet not by phone, but he asked the new product key..
This CD is came with the laptop (original)..
Try it without registering.when you do an internet activation on the screen should be a set of numbers 7 groups of 6 numbers.
these are the activation codes not the key on the disc or the sticker.

the numbers on the sticker or on the laptop are the product key.

for EXAMPLE Product Key equals:- rcfqd p9dx9 46wvm k2cd4 d435m

for example activation key:-123435 066960 482140 773430 635415 883054 726554

hoppe this is helpfull. The rquired number is product key not the activation key, consist of 25 digits with 5 groups ..
and found on the stickers on the laptop.. as shown in the pic attached.,
i enter the same number that i used through installation, but he said it is incorrectI'm afraid fighting with MS is the only solution here....

But be prersistent and you will do fine,I agree with "patio" , it can be done only it takes patience and persistance, dont get angry or annoyed by them they are only doing a scripted job and go by the rules. i have always managed to get them to reconsider if you have a valid legal copy you should win.check your keys. use a magnifying glass to make sure that the "0"zero's and letter O's are inserted correctly, that was always a problem.
and check with microsoft persistance and patience, dont get angry with them they are only doing a job, they are REALLY trying to help but if you get abusive you have had it.  check your keys. use a magnifying glass to make sure that the "0"zero's and letter O's are inserted correctly, that was always a problem.
and check with microsoft persistance and patience, dont get angry with them they are only doing a job, they are really trying to help but if you get abusive you have had it.Do they even mix 0's and o's? I believe they just use 0's.

If you phone Microsoft to activate your code and then fill out the wrong code, you'll get one of their employees on the line. Tell him exactly what happened and he'll most likely give you a new code. It's probably a CD mismatch.  You can't use an OEM key to activate a retail CD and vice versa.  Dell may have given you the wrong CD.

Solve : I tried searching for the answer first...?

Answer»

Meow, sorry to bug, but I cannot find an answer to this anywhere on the internet and all the chatrooms I have found wont work...

Anyway, my problem.

I have access to three nearly indentical computers and I PLAY this one java based game on all three. In this java program there is a chat and message system. Well on two of the computers I have access too, whenever a new message in chat appears in the game, the chat window area will auto-scroll down so I can see the message. Sort of link an instant messenger anbd how it moves older MESSAGES up as new ones come. But on the third computer, this does not HAPPEN. When a new messages comes I have to scroll down using the scrollbar to read it.

All three computers are made by dell, they all have the latest version of java on them, and they all have Mozilla as the primary browser. The only real differnces really are memory, RAM, and grapic cards which I doubt has anything to do with this annoyance. So I am assuming the problem is in some configuration somewhere, but I cannot locate that configuration. ANYBODY have any clue as to where to look?Nevermind, found the configuration. If I right click the scrollbar in game it CHANGES the scrolling. Must of right licked it by accident before.

Solve : Difficulty starting my computer?

Answer»

Hello,
I have an older COMPUTER, HP desktop with 600 mhz and 128 ram, plus windows 98. I use this for retriving email and going to websites.

Every time I strat this computer it freezes about 60% of the time. I get a message: Remote Exe, file MISSING export, IML.32.DLL:1809.
Does anyone know what this means. Also, how I can fix this, or eleiminate the problem.

Thanks for viewing, and await your comments.
FrankDoes Windows even load?

If so, scan for Viruses and spyware.

Also use scandisk. Are you starting Incredimail?  If so remove it from your auto startup LIST and reboot.Yes windows loads and all the other programs, but it never quite finishes. I think it is because of this IML.32 missing dll.

I do not use any other MAIL but Outlook.Define it never quite finishes.

Have you scanned for viruses and spyware as I recommended? As the computer starts up and loads, I get the message (see below) about IML.32, then the computer freezes. It stops completing the start-up and there is no activity, and I have turn off the machine with the on/ off button.

Can you recommend a program to scan for viruses or spyware?

ThanksDo them both, Panda won't remove spyware but it will make you aware of it.

Online Virus Scan and Spyware Scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

Online Malware Scan
http://www.ewido.net/en/Thanks for this information.

I guess the consensus is that this freeze-up is caused by a virus or spyware?

I would appreciate your confirmation. We don't know what's CAUSING the problem yet but starting with a clean computer is a good idea.

Can you start in safe mode without any problems?

Solve : Screen image moving constantly?

Answer»

The screen image moves up and down CONSTANTLY. It occurs on line 99% of the time. I was lucky it didn't happen on this forum. It occurs off line when writing a letter in WordPro. Just signed up with this forum and would appreciate assistant. Thanks, Ed Wieder Quote

The screen image moves up and down constantly.
Are you talking about image jitter or the image contracting and EXPANDING or is the image rolling?
Jitter - try a different refresh rate
C and E - you might be SOL. Repair or replace.
Rolling - Horizontal hold. If your monitor has an adjustment use that
No adjustment - use lower horizontal refresh rate
If neither works - repair or replace.
Image rolls up and then rolls down at a very fast rate. How do I change refresh rate?
The refresh rate was at 85 Hertz. I changed it to 60 Hertz. However, it changed back to 85 Hertz. What do I do now? Thanks, EdYou probably didn't press "Apply" Or you didn't install monitor drivers.ejw71, if I understand you correctly, the behavior sounds more like erratic scrolling by the mouse.  Does this occur with applications other than WordPro?

Even if you could lower the refresh rate to 60, I know I would not want to use my monitor at that refresh rate.  I notice the flicker.
Raptor, I did click on "Apply". Atempted the change several times to no avail. I didn't do anything to/with monitor drivers. How do I install monitor drivers?

Soybean, When off line , other than WordPro, the rolling of screen image doesn't happen the best I can remember.First answer Soybean's question. How old is that WordPro software?  Your OS?  What mouse do you have?  Have you tried updating or reinstalling your mouse driver?Does it happen in Internet Explorer as well?

Could you provide us with a screenshot? You could have your resolution set HIGHER than the monitor's, causing your COMPUTER to display only part of the screen on your monitor. This happens usually on laptops. Then when the screen goes up and down you are SIMPLY scrolling the rest of the screen. What is your resolution, and the max your monitor can use?

Not QUITE sure what you mean by "volume control bars"  :-/

You might need to REINSTALL your soundcard drivers if they are damaged.it's the lil bars/meter that goes across the bottom of the screen when you adjust the volume.  The sound works great , it's just the bars thats missing. They disappeared when I deleted the Trojan Virus.I'm new at this... How do I reinstall my soundcard drivers?Try the following first:

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel Sounds and Audio Devices -> tag "place Icon for volume control in systembar"

Freely translated.I've ALREADY done the above...the sound icon has always been on my task bar...it's just the lil bars that goes across the bottom of my screen that are missing... the ones that shows you when adjusting/turning the volume up & down.  I have no idea how to get that back.I think he means these:

YES!  that's it!Doesn't that usually have to do with the keyboard sound button?  At least that's been my experience.  Do you have one of those special keyboard with an Internet / email / Favorites / etc buttons?  If so you may need software (usually from the manufacturer) to get them loaded.

Alan <><  You need special drivers for that, they're related to your keyboard.

And they come in a lot of colour styles.Laptops are NOT the same as desktops.

The BIOS password is not meant to be be got around in the ways that you can on a desktop. Check with the manufacturer, but I'll bet you end up needing a new mainboard.UPDATE:

I downloaded the "Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 Utility: Setup DISKS for Floppy Boot Install" from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=15491F07-99F7-4A2D-983D-81C2137FF464&displaylang=en
.

Once I had all 6 floppy disks ready I followed all the steps only to get an error screen after installing the final disk :-/ :

One thing that could help is that I found a new startup menu. I only saw it because the external floppy DRIVE delayed the startup procedure by half a second. This allowed my to see an extra OPTION "Press F12 for boot device selection menu".
When I pressed F12 I was given these options:
1. Hard Drive
2. CD-ROM/DVD Drives
3. Removable Devices
4. Network Boot

By selecting "3. Romoveable Devices" I was able to try to boot from the 6 floppy disks, but that was unsuccessful. However, when I rebboted and chose "2. CD-ROM/DVD Drives" everything went fine .

So I'm now in the middle of a clean install of Windows XP (at last!).
Thanks again to everyone who offered their help in this thread.... much appreciated
No problem, glad you figured it out. I'd still try to break the password on the BIOS if I were you, though. Quote

and

HYUNDAI KOREA GM72V66841X7J

Is it possible I can stick these two RAM into my Sony Vaio? If so, how? Like, do I need anything specific? Thanks!Go to www.crucial.com and see EXACTLY what RAM that machine has and needs. It's dowbtful that whatever you have randomly laying around will magically work perfectly and could in fact cause a lot of other problems.

Or check with Sony.I have a problem, I don't know which VAIO I have. Can someone direct me? Thanks! That's really sad.

Is there info on the case? On the screen when it boots up? If no, download and run BELARC Advisor (free at www.belarc.com) and find out.

The odds are more against you as we go along.Okay, so my model is a RS310, I found out from systems info, and I just looked now, it says it on the case. (BIG LAUGH!) I went to the site, it gave me ones that works. Thanks! One question:

Is it okay if I stick a ram stick in the machine, just to test? Will it conflict with the system? Thanks again. Not unless you do not take precautions against ESD.ESD = ?
electrical s. device? I don't know what that means. Care to elaborate?Electrostatic Discharge.Okay, thanks. So if I just put the card in, if it works = what happens? If it doesn't = nothing happens, right? That is PROBABLY true, but why stick the wrong thing in there? If inserted wrong you could damage the slot, if the RAM itself is defective who knows what could happen? Are you a gambling type?

That model takes 184-pin PC2100 DDR DIMM. As these CAME from older machines I would say absolutely not to the second and 99.9% not on the first, only because we know little about it.Well..... you mean, it could damage my PC? Internally as well? If that's the case I won't risk it. But if it's damage to slot, I'm willing to try. I wreck things a lot. I haven't yet seen a RAM stick that damaged other components.Unless it's a particularly evil stick of ram, bwahahahahahahaSo do I stick it in and it will work automatically or what do I have to do? Thanks!Theoritacally, it should work, if installed properly.  HOWEVER, being you know so little I would take the computer and the RAM to a local computer SHOP and have them install it for probably $30 bucks Quote

Solve : Clarisworks 3.0 won't run?

Answer»

I picked up an "old" laptop at a back yard SALE for $5.00.It's an Epson Actionnote 650.I started it and opened several windows to see what was on the hard drive. I double clicked "Clarisworks" and it ran SUCCESSFULLY. Before I downloaded the manual for the laptop,I fooled around with the video drivers, trying to bring up color on the LCD.The screen went blank and I couldn't bring it back no matter what  I did! I obtained the Windows 3.1 setup disks and reinstalled the operating system and got a display.I also bought Brian Livingston's "Windows 3.1 Secrets" and followed instructions for installing Clarisworks (which was resident on the hard drive) in the 'Program Manager-Applications' window, using the 'Properties' Dialog Box.The icon for Clarisworks showed up in the 'PM-Applications' window. When I double click the icon, the screen goes blank, the horizontal cursor blinks in the UPPER left corner of the screen, the hard drive spins for about 4 to 5 seconds and the 'PM-Applications' window reappears...namely,Clarisworks refuses to run! It seems as though the OS is searching for something and can't find it. After searching through the directory trees in 'File Manager',I edited Autoexec.bat to add items to the Path= statement to enable a wider search and I still can't call up Clarisworks. I am bambozzled. Help!

My Autoexec.bat path statement:

       Path=C:\;C:\win;C:\DOS;C:\win\claris;C:\system;C:\win\mab;C:\win\system

(C:\win\claris is the search path to clworks.exe, the program command and C:\win\mab leads to five documents on the HD)

on a separate line in Autoexec.bat:

Path=%path%;C:\GEO-PC\BIN         (I don't understand this line.)

INCLUDED in the Autoexec.bat file:

SET GEO-PC=C:\GEO-PC\      (I don't have a clue what this means!)

That's a definite downgrade in my book!Don't be daft, Windows XP Home is a much better choice for any illiterate computer USER than Windows 2000 is. And even for literate computer users if you ask me, I never felt the need to use Windows 2000 instead of Windows XP...Don't be daft, XP uses more resources and forces you into the registration/validation merry-go-round.
As a trade off XP gives you a crappy firewall and 'system restore' which is excellent to screw your computer with. Quote

I've got to AGREE with you on the firewall. I think the fire got extinguished a long time ago and the wall must have become porous.

But still, if Windows 2000 is so GOOD for home users, why did Microsoft bother bringing out Windows XP Home? They could as well have brought out Windows 2000 Home.
Microsoft brought out XP to stop people using pirated copies of their OSs.

Solve : Win 2K Install- Lost Product ID - SOLVED?

Answer»

Hello, everyone. Thank you for trying to help me.

I'm trying to install a copy of Windows 2000 on an older computer. I obtained Win2k through a student service a few years ago; actual CD's weren't offered, the whole program had to been downloaded. Years later, having graduated college, I'm trying to now install that Win2K on a computer in bad need of an OS upgrade, but I can't find the Product ID. I had somehow obtained it and wrote it down, but now can't find the note. I don't know if the service gave it to me, or if I somehow go it from ONE of the installation files.

I know I'm stupid for losing my notes, but perhaps someone here can help me re-obtain that Product ID. Perhaps there is a program that can pull it out of the installation files?

Anyway, thank you for any help that can be provided, and thank you again for reading this topic and giving it a go!If it is installed on a machine you can retrieve that number, BUT if all you have is a CD and a blank hard drive you are SOL. SORRY.Here Ya Go

This is if you can still access the HDD that it's installed to...

I'm no longer a student, so I can't access the service anymore. It was a partnership with Microsoft that I'm not even sure exists anymore, hence I can't trying going back to get the ID.

I found a product ID online that someone posted, but of course it wouldn't match the one I'm missing. Does anyone know if I could use that ID without having any problems down the road? Thanks again for taking the time to address this.It would not be legal according to Microsoft even if it did work. You either need to buy the software from somewhere (eBay?) to get a legal copy or CALL Microsoft to pay for a license. They will be happy to ASSIST as Win2000 is still a supported product.

Solve : mouse lagging sound and video?

Answer»

recently i've notice that whenever i'm doing things on my computer that include playing SOUND or video, the  sound and video get really laggy (skippy and staticy) when i move my mouse. It generally goes back to NORMAL whenever i stop moving the mouse, but the gets laggy again when i START moving it again. It makes it almost impossible to watch videos, and the laggy sound will even affect some games that i play.

I have a toshiba 2.8 ghz laptop with 1.25gb of ram. It has a radeon mobility 7000igp graphics card and a realtec AC97 soundcard. Does anybody have any idea what is causing this and how i could fix it?Scanned for viruses and spyware?

Have you ran a diagnostic scan on the HDD using software provided by the manufacturer?Checked for updated mouse drivers?

Alan <><  I did scan my computer with avg antivirus, spybot, and adaware... and these found nothing.

I downloaded new mouse drivers, and though i haven't tested all the programs i was having trouble in, the problem seems to be better in one of the programs i was having trouble with.Try updating all your drivers.I've been able to update most of my drivers... i have problems updating my video drivers though.

I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 7000igp, but when i download drivers from ati, the softwhere says it won't work on my computer and i should get updates from the computer manufacterer. However, the latest video driver listed on the toshiba site for my computer is from June of 2004.Did you look for ATI Mobility drivers?

If you can't find them, E-mail ATI and ask them to E-mail you the drivers.Generally with laptops the manufacturer's site is the best PLACE for drivers. They are not standard retail products.  yes, the ati drivers that i found were for radeon mobility cards, but those didn't work so now i'm STILL using the old toshiba drivers.

Solve : OEM Windows?

Answer» MAJOR manufacturers give you a recovery CD labeled with their brand. Small shops that custom build USUALLY MAKE one for you and they are not custom stamped. I don't think you will have a problem as the shop has obviously paid the fees for an OEM provider. (Small shops can't afford to buy thousands of custom stamped CD's)You are right, it's a family business run by FATHER and son, and in my view they both SEEM to be honest people, the computer I bought was in fact custom built and not b ad at all for the price I paid . Thanks again for all the information I received since yesterday . I run the "keyfinder" and the number matched the one on the case

Solve : Windows XP Startup Problems?

Answer»

Hello Everyone.  First time poster.  Here it goes.

I have a Dell Latitude L400 laptop that I purchased used.  It had windows 2000 initially on it and I installed windows XP sp1 over the top.  Now I get the message:  "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt. \system32\hal.dll.  PLEASE re-install a copy of the above file."

Fine.  No problem.  I have the xp setup disks right here.  Wrong.  My used Dell laptop only has external floppy and cd rom drives that I purchased separately.  The two drives use 1 USB port.  But when I hook either the cdrom or the floppy disk up to the USB port, nothing is recongized and nothing even registers with a nice light blinking.  Hmmmm.  So here are my questions in no particular order:  Oh yeah, by the way...safe mode and all other modes (debugging, and last good configuration) when you press F8 is the same outcome.

1.  How do I get to a command prompt without using the cdrom or floppy disk drive?
2.  How do I access the USB port with out access to the hard drive at all?
3.  Can I do a network boot from my desktop PC, and how would I configure it since this laptop is not responding in any way?

I hope someone out there is able to help, and I really do appreicate it!  Have you tried a repair installation of Windows XP?I would try a repair installation if I could get to a command prompt.  I can't get to a command prompt because my cd rom is external and connects via a USB port.  The port is not working.  I also have a floppy disk external drive, and the same USB port (the only USB port I have) is not working.  I cannot put in the xp installation disk because the cdrom isn't registering.  I can't put in the floppy disks to run the xp repair installation because the external drive isn't working also.

All I want is to get a command prompt, but everything that is needed to get to a command prompt is futile.  HOPEFULLY this made some sense.Does the Laptop not come with an internal CD/DVD drive?

Can you not boot from an USB device?I had this same problem after adding a partition to my HD, not sure if that caused it... I remeber doing a windows repair and dont remember if that helped... I did however run a live cd and the file was infact there possibly corrupt but I had no backup to replace it...

...Have you ever booted from you "usb" drives before? maybe your bios doesnt support it... When you upgraded to xp did you boot to the disk or did you start it  it WILE in windows...Like fat_bastard21 suggests...unless your BIOS allows you to boot to a USB device you're stumped.

Do you have the original install disks that came with the laptop?  My question would be..."How did Windows 2000 Pro get installed in the first place?"  It's either on a hidden partition (which Dell usually DOESN'T do) or it had to be loaded via cdrom.

Have you contacted Dell support via their chat?  Might be worth checking out.

Solve : Outlook problems, please please help me?

Answer»

Hi guys

Outlook (office 2007) is driving me crazy, not sure if you have come across these 2 issue before/

1. I am constantly being asked for my username and password (see attached jpeg), I am 100% sure my username and password are correct, as I can logon via our online server without any issues. Its working fine to receive, but if there is a mail in my outbox, I keep GETTING prompted for password and it never TAKES it, just keeps popping up (making me want to throw the laptop out the window)

2. The above problem only started in the last 2 or 3 days (no settings have been changed by my knowledge) - but before this problem it worked fine here at home. However if I went to the office, send and receive DIDNT work at all - I just got a time out message, send and receive never worked, but again I could log on fine via the online mail server, and all other internet type things worked fine

any ideas guys?Your image attachment failed. Try putting it on www.imageshack.us (no registration required)

What sort of server are you using? (POP3, IMAP, HTTP)

Is your firewall blocking your connection? (WINDOWS Firewall should not deny access. Try disabling any other firewall, and if that solves the problem, contact your system administrator)

Solve : File encrypted??

Answer»

Wasn't sure where to put this, has been driving me crazy. I got an ATTACHMENT PDF in an email but when I go to open it it goes to notebook & is encrypted, never had that PROBLEM before. I called the people & they never heard of it & sd to oepn it in Adobe. I am totally CONFUSED! Any help would really be appreciated.PDF files are or the Adobe Acrobat format and can't be viewed from within Notepad.  It's not encrypted, so to speak, it's just not plain text.  Like TRYING to open an image with notepad.

For some reason your computer's associated PDF files with Notepad.  (ASSOCIATIONS tell a computer what program is used to open what type of file.)

If you don't have Acrobat installed, or if you're not sure if you do, visit www.adobe.com and download the free reader.  After installing it should associate PDF files with Acrobat, and you'll be able to view the file.A 5 star answer Anodin, Foxit is a very fast PDF viewer that I prefer over Adobe.

Solve : XP resticting limited user from access to 2nd hard drive?

Answer»

Message is mostly above.  How does one in MS XP restricting limited user account from access to 2nd hard drive?  I know I could just put them in my personal drives within MyDocuments but I would rather just lock out the second hard drive.

I am used HOME edition and not Pro.

ThanksAre you using XP Pro or Home?

If you're using Pro, go into the Control Panel and open Folder Options.  In the VIEW tab, SCROLL to the bottom of the LIST and disable Simple FILE Sharing.  Then, open up My Computer and right-click on the drives you wish to lock them out of.  Under the Security tab, add the user you wish to lock out, and under the attributes, Put a check next to Deny.  If it asks you if you wish to apply these attributes to all subfolders and files, click yes.  It might take a LITTLE while to change the settings on all the files.
