Solve : Little red cross?

Answer»

I get a little red cross when recieving e.mail pictures, please helpNo NEED to post twice. This isn't a chat room, you MAY have to wait up to several days for an answer.

What is your email application? What happens if you right click the pictures and CHOOSE "save as..."?

Is it pictures from some senders only or is it all pictures from all senders? If you can see some pictures but not others, I would suspect the sender may not have their PROGRAM SET to send pictures.

Otherwise, if you are using Outlook Express, check this setting in Tools> Options> Security tab. Uncheck the Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail check box if it is checked, then click OK.

I have tried and still no picturesRight click there and "Show picture"

What happensMeans the image failed.

Solve : Can I download to a virtual hard drive??

Answer»

Basically it's like this.

*to use the storage space from an online ftp'd site host that I use for a website.
*to use an online storage account like 50megs.com or some other storage site.

First Question:
I am wondering if I can somehow tell the computer that one or more of these are physical hard drives for the purpose of downloading to the storage supplied at a much faster rate and to be able to transfer the content to a website without my slow upload speed.

Second Question:
Also, if it is possible to download to any of these, would I also be able to access files on these virtual hard drives just like a physical hard drive? Would I be able to double click a file and have it execute? Say if I have an mp3, image, movie file or an xml? Question regarding xml, would I be able to directly pull up an xml in excel simply by double clicking on it as I normally do on my physical hard drive?

Third question:
If I can download to a virtual storage (hard drive), how could I raid or combine the virtual storage to other virtual storage to make a combined larger virtual hard drive?

Fourth Question:
Would I be able to share the material on the virtual hard drives with another party without the chance that another party could change, add or delete the material?

thanks. much appreciation for your time and your knowledge.I can't see any way you'd be able to do that. Usually these sites are browser driven so you can't map them as a drive.Well, I can see why a PERSON would find this useful, however, I do not think that it is at all possible.

Most online storage sites are a bit slow, especially if you have a slow connection. Copying and pasteing data takes time.
Most faster services require that you pay a price, search for "Online Backup storage" on Google.com
Can you raid two together?
No. FTP/HTTP Protocols are much too different for this type of action. It would be best to use the first until its full, and move to the second.
Being that its FTP/HTTP, it would move way too slowly if you tried to raid the drives, two together would not make it faster. Attempting to make it look like a physical disk will not make it faster.

A virtual hard drive, or VHD file, is used in emulating a different operating system on another computer.

Executing a file on FTP/HTTP would do the following:
Open its properties.

Yup, FTP is that useless...
It can open some files, so MP3, image, maybe movie, and documents would open, but many files, especially executables, would definitely not execute properly.

As for sharing:
If you had the ability to add FTP accounts to your server space, then yes, you could set permissions for your friends/family to read data, but to not edit or create data. You could also give your best friend full access to one single folder, or allow anyone to access your public folder (if it was set up) and you could use anonymous access for anyone to read data. ok, i know it can be done. or at least i really think it can be done. i did a little searching and i found this:

http://www.filesanywhere.com/WebDriveInstruction.htm#MapDrive

but i dont want to use their service. and by the looks of the details found here, i dont have to.

i looked at the reg file they had for installation and it looked harmless enough. i backed up my registry and created a restore point before installing the reg. restarted.

i added my site's ftp to My Computer - Other - Macromedia FTP & RDS.

then i tried to add the ftp as a networked drive. but, of course the ftp is not a networked drive so it could not find it.

this is where i need some help. how do i get windows xp home to see the ftp as a networked drive so i can add it as a mapped drive? Now this is a bit different than what you originally asked for.
From what I could find out on a quick Google search you can use a commercial software called Netdrive:
http://www.engadget.com/2005/10/25/how-to-map-a-drive-to-your-ftp-server/

Or INSTALL CuteFTP and try this:
http://www.astahost.com/info.php/map-ftp-server-as-drive_t7292.html

Or this:
http://www.killprog.com/fdrve.html

Note that this is still not the same as a physical hdd and if you try to execute something on the mapped drive, the startup can be very slow because the file will need to be downloaded first.basically i am looking for something i can download newsgroups to. i am currently using sftpDrive. While it has no problem with torrents, or anything ELSE that I can find, it shows write errors when downloading any multi-part files which I would get from newsgroups.

Also, apparently I can only download at my upload speed which is around 25KBps. This is a drawback. But, since my host provides me with 11TB, I can put up with it. I'm working off a notebook, so I cannot imagine CRAMMING that much storage in this thing.

The first key thing I want is a external online storage drive. The other stuff would be nice, but not required.

i appreciate the attention this thread is getting. I will look into these other options suggested as well. If something works better than what I have already found, then I don't mind paying for it. Especially if it will work with newsgroups. Quote from: fungusaur on August 08, 2007, 03:11:43 PM

If what ever program you're using is set to store directly on the ftp then yes you'll be limited by your upload. Because even though you're storing on a remote drive all the data still needs to swing by your computer. So you're downloading it and uploading it to the remote drive.Woah! 25KBPS upload? What is your download?

I wouldn't recommend executing anything from any connection that provides that kind of upload...

Anyways:
Just a note, Windows contains its own FTP client, which operates like a folder, and is much easier to use then many of those other FTP clients. Just go into "My Computer", and in the Location/Address bar of My Computer, (you might have to go to View>Toolbars> And check Address Bar) type the FTP location, like, ftp.mywebsite.com , and you will see the anonymous FTP access. Then, what you want to do next, is select File> Login
Type your login information, and press OK. I will log you in like any other client, but with a better interface (in my opinion, at least, I used to use CuteFTP)

If you are hosting a newsgroup over an FTP server, I recommend checking into a free host, like www.mbhosting.com and combining it with a .co.nr domain (www.co.nr for more information) and installing a forum. (This message that you are reading this very moment is on a forum) They are better for people that cant figure out newsgroups, and in some cases, work better since replys are easier to use.
(But thats only in my opinion, again) Instead of using FTP, use FXP, if supported.  CuteFTP can do it, but the best one I've found for this is FXP.  There are some limits:  You have to have ftp access to both sites, and both sites must allow PASV mode as well as foreign host connections.

Basically you run your little FXP client, and you'll have two windows, one server's directory tree in one, the other server's tree in the other.  When you transfer files, you're telling the SERVERS to initiate the connections with eachother, so that the speed of the transfer is determined by the two servers, and the file never actually passes through your machine.

If there's an error on a page there's nothing you can do about it, it's not your page.
Clicking on url links in emails is dangerous, try copying & pasting the link into the address bar of your browser.
Is your Windows up to date? Thanks bro for sticking up for me! lol  I use MSN mail and I updated my Windows today.  Why is it dangerous to go on urls and why would it be All of the urls and not just a specific url on a website?

Who sent you these E-mails?

No, not all URLs are dangerous, Fed was giving you a general warning. She asked me to post here for her, the error message she keeps getting is worse then ever, any page she tries to access gets the error message, she cant even post here, this doesnt seem to have anything to do with emails it would seem...
These details seem a little vague I know, any suggestions?some site's have parts that require extra programmes, such as Active X or Java. If you don't have these you get an error message, usually saying similar to "The site has loaded but with errors on page" if this is the case then not to worry as it is usually minor things that haven't loaded such as adverts (wahey!!)

Hope I Helped
Tecciewooo hooo I finally got on here!!!  That is with the help of my computer guy.  He asked what my brower was and I told him Internet Explorer.  He told me to try going on through Fire FOX and it worked!!!   no more error MESSAGES.  I don't understand why this is but I am waiting for a phone call back from him.  While I am here can someone please point me in the direction to where I would go for me to change my password and not have one given to me.  I am having a very bad computer day!

Thanks Bunches

Solve : MISSING WINDOWS TEXT?

Answer»

My XP laptop is 14 months old, it has suddenly slowed to almost a standstill.  NORTON & Ad Aware scans negative, plenty of disk space.  Went to try system restore but when i clicked on "Start" there wasn't the usual "Programs" entry in the menu, some other items had an icon but no text LABEL.  Tried to find system restore by using "Search", but the "Search" box appeared without most of the normal text.  Found system restore by other means but again most text MISSING INCLUDING all numbers from the restore calendar.  It seems to be only Windows dialogue boxes affected.  The Internet shows OK, but is very slow.  I would like to find the problem before i wipe the disk.

any help appreciated

Solve : I/O Device Error Help?

Answer»

I'm currently on a toshiba satellite running XP and for the PAST couple of days, my CD drive hasn't been working. When I try to read a CD, I get a "I/O Device error" message.
I've tried many things such as:
- Uninstalling the drive and then rebooting
- Messing with the IDE controllers
- Running chkdsk
- I've also scanned for viruses and haven't found any
Yet it still doesn't work ;(
I'd consider reformatting, but I'm not sure if it's possible to do without a working CD Drive, and I'm also not sure if it'll fix the drive. Any help/ideas?The error message is caused from Windows trying to use a transfer mode that your CD/DVD drive cannot recognize.

A more common error message that is seen when this issue arises is:

"The REQUEST could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

However, both error messages yield the same solution.

To resolve this issue, you will need to change the transfer mode in your IDE channel properties. Here's how:

   1. Go to Start
   2. Right click My Computer
   3. Select MANAGE from the resulting menu
   4. In the Computer Management window, select Device Manager
   5. In the right pane, click to expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
   6. Identify your CD/DVD drive in the expanded menu and right click the appropriate             drive
   7. Select Properties
   8. In the Properties windows, click the Advanced Settings tab
   9. In the Transfer Mode box that represents your CD/DVD drive (typically Device 1),    open the drop down menu and select PIO Only
  10. Click OK and exit all windows.

If this does not resolve your issue, then you will need to go back using the above procedure and change the Device 1 in step #9 back to "DMA if available". Then, change Device 0 to "PIO Only" in the Transfer Mode box.

Device 0: Primary IDE Channel
Device 1: SECONDARY IDE Channel

Tony

Let me know how it goes Thanks Tony, but I've already tried that, and it didn't do anything ;(

VLC

OK well you could download the player from the link above and see if that helps .........its a great media player.......i think you may need a codec im not 100% sure on that though , just try the media player above and see if it plays.

Tony HMM...I don't really think the problem has anything to do with my media player, but I guess it can't hurt to try.Completely remove the drive from the laptop.
With a flashlight carefully inspect the inside of the slot for dirt or debris.
Use compressed air to clean it out.
Do NOT insert any metal objects in the slot.
Inspect the business end of the drive to be sure nothing is bent or out of whack.

Re-insert the drive re-boot and see if this helps...

p.s. How old is the drive ? ?
It may be heading South.Ok I am officially confused. Before, whenever I put a CD into the drive, my computer wouldn't even recognize it. When I went into My Computer and clicked on it, I got the device error.
I downloaded that Media Player ^ and insert a CD into the drive, and all of a sudden my computer automatically recognizes it. =S
I'm pretty sure the VLC wasn't what fixed it, but it's fixed either way =P Thanks for all your help guys

Solve : weird error notice?

Answer»

Whenever my kids have been online and leave a window open overnight and when I get home in the morning I click out of the webpage I get this message:

The instruction at "0x62304390" referenced memory at "0x62304390". The memory could not be "read".
click on OK to terminate the program

Can someone please tell me what this means. This has been happening for the past month.

I am running windows XP which was upgraded from windows 98SE
80 GB harddrive
256mb RAM
Available physical memory 40.94 MB
Total Virtual memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual memory 1.96 GB

Also before I went to work last night the mouse was WORKING perfectly fine and when I got home this morning the wheel of the mouse is not working, which is quite irritating
I have a firewall installed which came with the Winxp cd but I dont have a virus scanner installed. I had issues with Norton and uninstalled it.
Can someone please reply and help me figure out what the problem is?
Thanks for your helpYour probably running IE 6 on your computer and certain web pages will do this when you close out of IE6 now.

Update (from windows update site) to IE7 and this will solve your problem... HOWEVER after you update to IE7, check all your programs espescially any that require internet conections.

You might find that some will not work without a patch/fix from the provider of that program.

For instance HP Printers, all-in ones, scanners etc..that rely on a program called "HP Director" to work will not work with IE7 installed. AND HP hasn't got a fix/patch out YET so in a case like that UNINSTALL IE7 (from the add/remove programs feature) and live with your IE6 Error messages until a patch is available and you can then re-update your computer to IE7.

If you ask me... they (Microsoft and all/ any third party program providers) should get there acts together (communicate with each other) before screwing up our lives with "pretty updates" like IE7 that scew up other essential things on our systems.

Hope this helps ya Tony

Technically...they already have our money.....they don't need to do anything....which sux =)Thank you very much...and you're right, I am running IE6, only because I had IE7 before and had problems with opening certain webpages, but if that is the problem than I am not too worried about it, I thought I might have a virus or something.
Do you have any suggestions what could be happening with my mouse?
I already took it apart to see if that is the problem which it isnt
Thanks for all your helpHow olds the mouse? does it scroll perfectly? not on screen, but as in the ACTUAL movement of the wheel .... is there any strain on yourself when moving it ..... it could be jammed...

Tony the wheel moves freely, but honestly, i have no idea how old the mouse is, I got the mouse from another person.
But I do remember now that  Java 6 updated yesterday, could that have something to do with this problem?
And what would happen if I uninstalled the update?
Thanks for all your help
taking out the update should not affect you in any negative manner, and if you can't find out how to uninstall it from the add/remove list, you can try doing a System Restore to a day before the update was installed. Click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore ...... it gives you a calender and you can only choose the days in bold basically choose one from a couple days ago and see if you scroll wheel comes back to life. This shouldn't affect any personal data btw.

Now for the IE error message. Obviously make sure its updated to the fullest without going to IE7, also check for spyware and delete your cookies and cache. Check with your kids to see what pages they're visiting......

Question..does that error message from IE always come up when you close it, or only when you get home after the kids have used it?I already did the system restore and that did not change anything, so now I cant think of anything else except maybe buying another mouse and seeing if that makes a difference. I guess I will find out when i get my check.
For that error message it always comes up when i close out of IE, but only if it has been left open for a while, long enough to have the screensaver come on which is about 10 minutes.have you tried turning off the screensaver? possibility that that's buggin out IEI fixed the error message...I downloaded IE7 and that took care of it, weird but the mouse issue i still have and I am gonna buy a new one and see if that takes care of the problem.
Thanks all of you for your help though and I will keep you updated about the mouseYh i really cant think of why it would have stopped working the more advanced mouses have options where you can actually disable scrolling,  but by the sounds of things you said you got it from work so i doubt you would have any software...... i nominate patio to help you on this one , hes a expert on hardware.... he may be able to help you ......

Malware has totally made your OS completely braindead. The only thing I can tell you to do is try to salvage anything you can and start from scratch. If so are you saying the machine still reboots itself ? ?

If so re-boot into safemode...Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery...UNCHECK "auto reboot on errors" which is on by default.

Then re-boot into safemode and re-run all your protection apps.
Post BACK with a complete list of the apps you have and the results as you only mentioned Norton...

Solve : Bad Registry key in XP Pro?

Answer»

QUESTION:  I have a bad Registry key in Windows XP that prevents associating the PDF extension with an application. Regedit cannot display the key: "HKEYLocalMachine/Software/Classes/PDF". It cannot be overwritten with a registry merge.  How can I fix this error so I can view PDF files again?

PC INFO:
Home built PC (2 years old) ASUS P5GDC motherboard
Windows XP Pro, with SP-2 and all MICROSOFT patches (OEM version)
   Pentium 4, 3 GHz
   1024 MB memory
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT video card
   Firewall: free Zone Alarm
   Antivirus: free AVG 7.5
   Antispyware:  CounterSpy 2.5
DSL Internet connection via hardware router

DETAILED INFORMATION:  My regular (administrative level) User account started having a problem starting the user interface for CounterSpy 2.5 recently.  Counterspy.exe would not launch, so there is no access to the User interface.  After many unsuccesful attempts to diagnose the problem, I found that it WOULD launch in any NEW admininistrative level User account.  In order to duplicate all my existing settings, I then used a third User account to copy the settings from my regular account to the new account as follows:

Right-click MyComputer, Properties, Advanced tab, User Profiles Settings.  I selected the regular User account, clicked CopyTo, and selected the new User account.

After the copying was finished, I logged into my new User account, which now looked identical to the regular User account.  At this point, Counterspy.exe WILL launch and the problem was solved.  However, another problem appeared!  PDF files will no longer launch the Adobe application.  I tried all the usual techniques to associate PDF files with the application, but that process looks unusual, compared with associating any other file type.  METHOD 1: Shift-Right clicking a PDF file, selecting Open With, Choose Program does not open the regular "Open With" window where the "Always use selected program to open this type of file" appears.  Instead, a window opens that says "Windows cannot open this file, and the only options are (1) Use the Web to find a suitable program, and (2) Select the program from a list.  I select option (2) and an Open With window opens that looks similar to the normal one, but with more options.  However, this does not work; PDF files still have no association.  METHOD 2: I have also tried using Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, selecting the File Types tab, and scrolling to PDF, and creating the association that way.  No dice!

Finally, I spent time in the Windows Registry searching for all entries with PDF, and found that there is a problem with the following key:

HKEYLocalMachine/Software/Classes/PDF

Regedit cannot display this entry.  Regedit says "Error Opening Key"  "Cannot open PDF: Error while opening key".  Several other nearby entries are also bad (PDD, PEF, PLS, etc).

At this point, I went back to my old regular User account (nominally identical to the new one), and checked the same Registry entries.  They are OK.  So, I then exported the HKEYLocalMachine/Software/Classes part of the registry to a file.  Going back into the new User account, I tried to import this REG file (merge) so it would overwrite the bad area.  That also doesn't work and gives the error message:  "Cannot import FILE.REG:  Error accessing the registry".

So here is my question:  How can I fix this Registry problem so I can associate PDF files?  Is there a registry repair program that could fix this?
Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling Adobe?

Alan <><  Well here is my suggestion:

BTW: Ccleaner is free.

Your suggestions sounded great.  However, it doesn't help.

Apparently, CCleaner did not get rid of the bad registry keys, as Regedit still can't display the bad entries.

Also, reinstalling Adobe reader did not help either.  The first time I ran it, I can't even get to the "I Agree" part of the license agreement due to massive amounts (100's??) of small windows titled "Internet Explorer Script Error".  MANY mouse clicks on the X to close these windows, then try to click on I Agree, produces another bout of Script Error windows.

Running an alternate PDF reader program, FoxItReader, I can drag and drop PDF files onto that application to display their contents, but double clicking on a PDF file still won't work, since I still have the same lack of file association problem, which I assume is because of the registry problem.

I have thought seriously about trying to reinstall Windows itself and all my applications from scratch, but the magnitude of that task is horrible.  My PC is used for so many tasks, there are over 100 programs listed in Add/Remove Programs, and over 100 Windows XP security updates/patches!  However, I'm finding other strange things, such as "Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore" just shows a blank window.  Also, "Start/Help&Support" doesn't even start at all.  So, it appears there are some major flaws in Windows XP itself, at least in this new User account.

I guess I could just abandon my new User Account and go back to the old one.  Then, my only problem is not being able to run the user interface of CounterSpy.  However, I would have to log into different User Account, just to run the daily Spyware scans.  That is not ideal, though.

If anyone has any other ideas, I'd be more than happy to try something else.

Thanks for your advice!

I use FoxIt exclusively.  I did not even have Adobe reader installed when all this started.  The only reason I did install it now was to see if it would clean up the file association problem with PDF files.  It didn't.  So it is now history again.

I believe the new User account is too hosed to fix.  I'm deleting it, and going back to my original account.  Everything WORKS there, except for no ability to launch Counterspy.exe.  I guess I'll have to log on as Admininstrator each day and let CounterSpy do its daily scan.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions!

Solve : Changing Name in XP Home?

Answer»

I have what sounds like a simple question, but stay with me.
Under C:\Documents and settings\John Mc Henry, with John Mc Henry being my name under user accounts (not my real name), I WANT to change that name and windows won't allow it.  It says it is a system file and can't be done.  I want to take the space out of my name.
I've tried going to user accounts and changing it alos, but that doesn't change it under Docs and settings, only in User Accounts.  I've tried changing it in safe MODE also with no luck also.
I am the only user on the computer so of course I do have admin rights.
Any ideas other then reformatting and starting over, all for an extra space?  Is there a simple regedit that might work?
FloydRight-click on My Computer and go to Properties.  Click on the Computer Name TAB and then click on the Change button.  Does that work for you?  If changing the name has any adverse AFFECTS, simply follow the same steps to change the name back to what it was originally. You can't do it.
Changing the computer name is not what he's after, CBMatt - it's the logon name, also used under Documents And Settings.
I wanted to change mine a while back, but it can't be done, at least not that I know of.
Sorry. Quote from: Calum on August 08, 2007, 09:18:42 AM

Solve : Word Help?

Answer»

I NEED some help with Word… I have a very long DOC (220 pages) and am
trying to do Grammar checks on the entire thing… I am doing each
individual checks (example only CAP, then only frag, etc. etc). Here
is the issues – I am GETTING stopped but it saying "spelling and
grammar check COMPLETE" . I need to know how to recheck the doc again,
for the next setting I check. Any ideas??  I have already tried the "recheck doc" button and it is still saying check complete...  try using F7.
It could be that the text is to large.
Try opening a new document and cut and paste.
Then do the checks in smaller texts.

Jonas Wow you guys are fast with responses...  Thanks - I will try that..  If anyone else has a suggestion keep them coming. :-)We are not always that fast.
But we try to be as fast as possible.
White the best advice that we know.

Let me know how it turned out.
There are some other ways but they are much more difficult.
I would advice to try the other ones first.

Jonas Hi again - that didn't work..  are there any other ways that you know of???  It means there are no more mistakes. Trying misspelling a word in your document then run the spelling and grammar check to see if it's functioning correctly.Hi everyone...  Okay I can't seperate the doc so the F7 option won't work...  I also thought that it was complete but I know for a fact that it is not...  Anyone got any other tricks that I may try??  This is really frustrating. Solve : i need help, please!?

Answer»

Hi, I have a serious problem with my laptop. When I turn it on, it boots up and Windows XP startup screen is shown. However, instead of loading windows, it just stays BLACK. The screen is still on, but there is nothing, not even a cursor. i've managed to RUN something called pc angel, which says it's backing up data, then starting setup recovery. This also stops and just switches to a black screen. I really don't want to reinstall windows, as there are a lot of files i need. Is there any WAY of rescuing it? Thanks for any help,
SusanWell, you can save all the information with one of
these-->Adaptor

Can you boot in safemode ?PC Angel on their website claim to have INSTALLATIONS on 65% of the personal PC's in the U.S. and i've never heard of it...
if you have the installation disc's can you not try a repair installation which if done correctly will keep all your data, emails settings etc in place. Thanks for the help. I can't get to the installation discs, they are at my house at uni. We still have the installation discs for this computer though, will they work? (Both comps have XP).

p.s. I can't boot in SAFE mode
If they are MS XP CD's this will work if the versions are the same Pro/Pro.
If they are OEM discs such as HP, Compaq they will wipe everything on the drive including any programs you have installed.

Solve : System32 Files Missing?

Well I Updated my computer (Automatic Update) and right after it restarted the computer an error box popped open saying a file was missing and it could not run explorer.exe

I ran TASK manager and tried to run the system restore exe (rstrui.exe) but the window came up blank.

Is there anyway to fix this?

Thanks in Advance. Welcome to the CH forums.

Please read this...

Which file(s) is(are) missing?Well Possibly All *.dll Files are missing from the System32 Folder. If you can BOOT into SafeMode with no problems you could try to do a System Restore......but if all the.dll files are missing ( which is weird, well i guess not when a Windows Update is in the equation ) you should try running chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console to SEE if that recovers some of the FUNCTIONALITY to your system. But seriously, if all the dll files were missing from /system32, I wouldnt see how ud get as far as you're getting now. GO to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it...Try to download and install Library Files from here:

Solve : Safe-Mode?

Answer»

Hi,
I've been having problems with a slow COMPUTER, especially since downloading SP2.  After downloading, I didn't have much disk space left to defrag.  Uninstalled a few programs.  Also, downloaded a registry cleaning application.  My computer is still running slow.  The registry staff got back to me and wanted to me to go into safe mode and followed about 25 different steps, which I was outraged about since I ordered their appl. to help clean up and speed up my computer, which it didn't do.  Anyway, after thinking about it for a while, I thought I would check it out.  When I went into safe-mode, it keep telling me that there was a problem on my computer, e.g., applications error, perhaps a virsus, etc., it kept kicking me back to running the computre normally.  So, how can I get into safe-mode.  If safe-mode is working, I'm thinking there is definitely a serious problem?   Any suggestions or thoughts?   Thanks.

Still would like to know what could be causing safe-mode from finishing up, it keep kicking me back to normal mode.    Thanks.OS is Windows XP, correct?

How much disk space do you have free exactly?

And what antivirus protection do you have?

Did the issue start directly after installing SP2? Or was it a little while after?

Press ALT+CTRL+DEL, and click "Performance" and tell us what it says for your RAM usageA Registry tool won't do much to speed up performance and especially not if you are low on disk space.whats the programs name?Yes, I have XP Home Edition.  My disk space is now 3.81 GB; CPU [email protected]%;  and my computer started slowing up almost immediately.  Someone mentioned it might just be Explorer 7's fault.    My antivirus protection is Spysweeper.    The registry is registryfix and I also downloaded XP medic, which was the first program I downloaded.  It didn't do anything to speed up my computer, and after five emails for help, and not an answer to any of them;  I then downloaded registry ???fix.  At least they answered my email, and wanted me to go into safe mode, which as I mentioned is not working correctly!

Thanks.Spysweeper is not a Virus Protection program, its an Adware and Spyware protection program.
Check this out: HTTP://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
When you install it, have it do a boot-time scan (when it asks if you want to or not) and if it detects anything, quarinteen the file.
What RAM (Memory) usage do you have going right now? You posted your CPU usage.

Hi,   Not that computer literate;   I know that RAM is memory.  Is it the FP usage, or Physical or kernel memory, commit charge?     Actually, spysweeper has now added antivirus protection included in the spyware program.  Thxs

Spysweeper:
Did you UPGRADE to the Antivirus version? (for sure, just checking)

If so, then you might still want to use a SECONDARY scanner, since a virus may have been built to bypass yours.
Since its a very bad idea to install two antivirus protection programs at once, I suggest that you try an online scanner, like this one:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Memory:
How about your paging file (PF) usage, and physical memory usage?
The PF is 298 MB;  Physical total:  260076; available 107740, system cache 103825.   The computer came with penicil-in, something like that, I uninstalled it because of the antivirus from spysweeper. The below 2 are free and they work great. All I use is
AVG.

Solve : HELP PLEASE files deleted??

Answer» PLEASEhelp me

For the past couple months I've been using the "computer administrator" user on my laptop. It said that it was the default setting for when there was no other users created. Today I made my own user and I'm guessing the "computer administrator" ACCOUNT was deleted because its not there anymore. I cant find any of the pictures or documents that were saved on that account. IM hoping someone can help me recover them.
I have an HP laptop and im using Windows XP.

I'm 16 years old and cant take the computer anywhere to have it looked at. ILL be happy to clarify anything.
Thanks in advance !! You can still log in to this account, it's just hidden.
You shouldn't use this account ANYWAY, so it's good that you made your own.
To log into this account, type admin as the user name and whatever password it has on the login screen.
Then you can copy the files you want to a memory stick or something, or straight into where you want them to be from the admin account.
Hope this helps.Thank You it helped a little BIT.
Where do I type in admin? Do I create a new account?
When I tried tried to make a new account named "administrator" it said one already existed. So I'm guessing that means its the hidden acountname.
It only gives me the option of signing in as guest or my account.
So I don't know where I should go? How to login as Administrator in Windows XP?

Solve : Dual Monitor Resistance?

Answer»

Hello

I am using Windows XP, and have a dual monitor setup.
I want to make it so that there is resistance when you attempt to move the mouse over, so you dont accidentally switch it. (You have to "Push" the mouse "Harder" to make it move to the other monitor)

My primary card is a nVidia GeForce FX 5200 (PCI) 256MB 1024x768
My secondary card is a Intel Extreme Graphics Controller (Onboard) 64MB 800x600
(Both are set to 32 bit color, and 60Hz)

Are there any hidden settings in XP to do this, or free programs?
(I did Google, but didnt really get much) I know of no way to do this, but it's an interesting question.
I'm going to follow this thread and see what happens. There is some resistance created by the Start button, and the tops of some applications, but it would still be nice to have more. Why not assign that function to a mouse button so it won't accidentally switch ? ?I also use dual monitors and I know of no way to do this.  If your general problem is some annoyance at having to visually search your monitors to see where the mouse pointer is sitting, you might try using a larger size pointer.  I use the "Magnified" pointer; it's just a bigger version of the standard arrow pointer and is more easily seen.

What do you mean by resistance?Resistance:

Its kind of hard to explain, but for a demo:
Move your dual display to be set to the left instead of the right. Now, move your mouse to the middle of the Start button, and pause a second, and then continue moving it to the left. See how it stops instead of moving to the second monitor?

Well, I am looking for something like this, but that causes resistance on the entire left side (just a small margin) (But more over, something that you have to "Push" the mouse over to make it go PAST. That way, you dont accidentally move it past WHATEVER you originally intended to point. Quote from: Zylstra on August 03, 2007, 03:05:26 PM

My secondary monitor is already on the left; it's my normal setup.  I get no such response, no resistance/pause/delay.  I think it's, indeed, abnormal to have any "resistance".  However, it may be worth mentioning that I'm using two 17 inch monitors, with both set at the same resolution and they are aligned directly side by side in the Display Settings SCREEN.  My primary card is a nVidia GeForce FX 5200 (AGP).  My secondary card is a nVidia GeForce4 MX440 (PCI).  They use the same driver. Can you nail a small strip of wood down the middle of the desk to prevent the cursor from going to the monitor on the left ? ? Does any of the nVidia software have dual monitor settings? I couldent find any options. (Except for a Linux like desktop switching software) Zylstra i was joking about the strip of wood...

Solve : How can I open Port 80??

Answer»

I need to access Port 80 because I will be working with IRC chat. I need Port 80 open for my home business. Any simple instructions for doing this WOULD be appreciated ?

shamchWe will need a lot more info here.
What operating system are you using?
Are you GOING to host an IRC server or connect to one?
Why port 80? The default port for IRC servers are 6667 as far as I remember. Some firewalls may block connections on certain ports, you must allow access to these first.
Your solution is software Dependant

(Correct about port 6667)

Port 80 is often used for other services.

Are you sure its IRC, or are you trying to access something inside your business that wasn't intended to be ALLOWED? ... Port 80 is the port that CONNECTS you to the Internet and is open by default.

Solve : Paging file size is stubborn?

Answer»

Hi, is there a way to keep the paging file from changing? I have windows xp and its recommended paging file size is 1534 mb in my case. If i let windows allocate it automatically I notice that it only makes the paging file about 400+ mb. So I tried to manually set the paging file at initial and maximum both at 1534 mb to no avail. I have System Mechanic 6 running and sometimes I use it to optimize my computer. Can it contribute to the problem? Sometimes when I'm playing a game, windows warns me that the virtual memory is too low.

Did you reboot after applying these settings?
And do you have more than one HDD or partition?Try setting the min and max sizes to the same number such as 1280 and APPLY the settings and re-boot.Yeah, I have one sata drive with 2 partitions. I already did those things. I set the initial and maximum at 1534 both and always REBOOTED to make the changes. Will moving the paging file to the 2nd partition (not the 1st which contains my system files) do harm? You might notice that when you enter the numbers, you also have to click "Set" and then "Apply"
There was one time when I adjusted the settings, and couldent figure out why it wouldn't change.

If the paging file is too low, Windows will re-adjust the size and make it bigger. I don't know how this applys to running out of DISK space.

One thing to ask yourself is:
Do I really need to change the paging file size?
How much HDD space do you have free? Is it ENOUGH?

You might also try setting the initial size to something like... 1500 and the max to 1534. I had some problems once when I tried to set the max and initial size to the same, it just didnt work on my end. Zylstra, I will try again. I dont remember if I click on Set before I Apply. I normally would let Windows automatically set the paging file but on two separate occassions while playing a game I got a warning about the paging file being too low (its about 400+ mb while the recommended size is about 1534 mb). I STILL have about 60 gb of free space in my 1st partition so its not a problem of running out of disk space.

Solve : Windows XP and DSL?

Answer»

My brother has a laptop with 128M of RAM. The computer was working fine on dialup, but when he went with DSL WINDOWS says it has encountered a problem and must close after he tries to do a Goggle search or tries to browse. He can get to his Yahoo email fine and send and receive, but browser not working. He was told 128M is not enough with XP. Is this true?Scan your computer here http://www.crucial.com/ , and check your ram , that doesnt sound right , im not 100% sure but did your computer come with that terbbile amount of ram .......

Tony Tell him to try and shut down any unneccessary programs running in the background such as screen savers, eye candy and anything not needed in the tray area.
He is running XP on the bare minimum and will continue to have issues.I suspect that it is not an issue with the speed and the amounts of data comming into the computer, since a dialup connection takes in the same amount, just at a lower rate.

I suspect it was how the connection was set up..

Go to Start> Control Panel> "Internet Options"
SELECT "Connections"
Click "LAN Settings"
and select "Automatically DETECT proxy settings"

Click OK

Delete any dialup connections on the dialup list (That is if you dont USE them anymore)

Still not working?
It could be a problem with the connection protocols that Windows uses to connect to the Internet, FTP, HTTP, FILE, etc
How you fix that?
I have no idea, but something I learned from Patio:
Click Start> Run
Type:
sfc /scannow
Press ENTER
(Have your XP Installation disk ready)
Getting back to the issue with RAM, Microsoft recommends 128 MB of RAM for Windows XP, but you should really think about upgrading to at least 512 MB since RAM is relatively inexpensive and easy to get.

Solve : Internal HD Password?

Answer»

Can someone PLEEEEASE help me??? I set an Internal Hard Drive Password for my laptop (haven't used in a LONG time) and I cannot remember what it is ........I've tried EVERYTHING I can possibly think of and I still can't get in.

Is there any other way I can get rid of this stupid HD password and get into my laptop??

PLEASE PLEASE HELP    You need to contact the maker of the laptop and show evidence that you own it, such as a purchase receipt. They will probably make a charge for resetting your password. Otherwise you now have a paperweight.

You MUST have the hdd password. Even if you put the drive in another pc you won't have access to it (a hdd password is encoded on the disk). You can't even format it and use it again. There are some companies that claim to be able to recover hdd passwords and data but they are very expensive and do not guarantee their work. If you really need the data do a search on the net and pick one out.

The alternative is to buy and install a new hard drive, and install WINDOWS on it off a licensed CD.

Think about it. If laptop passwords were so easy to crack that you could read about it on the net, they wouldn't be worth having, would they?

Yea you do have a point
Thank youAlthough I haven't did this look at the below
download.

http://www.hdd-tools.com/products/rrs/download/Nice link Street1 im probably going to try it out today.Nice work, street1, you just pointed a hundred laptop thieves and data snoopers in the right direction...

Sounds highly dubious to me... pay $50 to unlock a hard drive, no checks on ownership, pay by Paypal, open to abuse it seems to me.

Also, if wendymt asked the question, how come MICH431 thanked you for the link?

While I agree the site is a bit suspicious I don't think streeet1 has done data thieves any favors. It only takes a simple search to get to that site or any number of other sites offering similar services.
Besides, if you have sensitive data to protect you should take better measures than a hdd password. I guess you're right Deerpark. No offence intended, street1. I suppose the people who steal laptops for commercial or international espionage will know exactly what to do without going to one of those sites.

pick a date before you used the system optimizer program.

what was the programs name?Hello unlovedwarrior,
Thanks for your reply. I can't do anything on it at the moment, nothing coming through to the monitor, keyboard or mouse. When I turn on sounds as normal but nothing else. the problem seemed to disappear yesterday, that was when I ran the optimizer programme (system mechanic pro6) it highlighted the "windows has locked drive C:" problem.
I have used it without problems for several months.
I would not have had any idea  about the "locked drive" without it.

I hope that provides more info, please excuse my technical ineptitude!!

Many thanks harrybean.

Solve : Small display problem.?

Answer»

Not sure if this should go here.

I recently had my hardrive wiped for a UNRELATED reason and am happy with my decision. Although there is one problem.

I keep fooling around with my screen settings, yet no matter what the DIMENSIONS are set to, EVERYTHING is bigger than it is supposed to be, so if I move it one notch up, it's way to stretched.

It looks best at 1152x864.

Yet I can tell it's way to big. Is there any way to manually do it, because every other default size is either too big or too stretched.

I'm pretty sure I've always had it at 1152x864 or the NEXT one up, yet 1152x864 is too big and the next one up is too stretched.

Thanks.try 1280X1024Wow, that WORKED. I'm an idiot. I figured since the other ones above the original size looked stretched the last one would to.

Sorry for me being an idiot. Thank you so much! You're not an idiot ...it's just something you weren't aware of til yesterday.
Stop by anytime.

Solve : Deleting fragmented files?

Answer»

Thanks for the help.

I'm running XP Pro SP2 and have TWO corrupted/fragmented files that won't defrag.  They are an old poker software that I've tried to uninstall and a Thunderbird email profile that is quite large unfortunately. I can't fix the email profile so I think I'll just have to dump it and start again.  I can't delete them EITHER of them THOUGH, my computer blue screens.

The reason I need to delete them is I can't run a full system virus scan without my computer crashing and I can't move or copy the corrupted/fragmented files without a crash.  My computer's working fine otherwise.

Any suggestions oh wise ones?

KKI have yet to come across a file that Killbox can't get rid of... Just be VERY CAREFUL with what you do with this prog  Start in Safe Mode and run your virus scan and then try deleting the corrupted/fragmented files.

Solve : Resolved: Confused - NTFS, FAT32 & Hard Drive Crashes?

Answer»

OK, I POSTED here several weeks ago about a crash my hard drive had. I wanted to recover files and thought if I put that hard drive as a primary slave drive and put a new drive as a primary master drive I would then be able to use the master to recovery files off the slave.

I've decided to make a new topic, however, because I've tried that and now I seem to have a new problem. The master drive won't work with the slave drive connected to the computer - the slave is too corrupted. Apparently the crash I got (STOP 0X00000024) is related to a problem with the NTFS system.

This article outlines my problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;228888

It says that I need a FAT32 system to deal with the problem. I'm not very computer literate - I only found out what NTFS, FAT32, etc... was a few months ago. And I just found out how to install a slave & master drive a few weeks ago, thanks to this problem. For some reason the article says I need to use Windows 2k - I don't know why. I've tried Windows 2k profession, which only installs as a NTFS system and, predictably, it didn't work.

Is Windows 2k home edition a FAT32 system? Is that what the article suggests I use? If not, why would the Microsoft article recommend I use Windows 2k, and not XP, if it's a NTFS system? The article is suggesting another windows 2000 machine because the article was written for win 2000. But the steps should still be valid for XP. You could format your new master hdd as FAT 32 and then follow the steps suggested in the guide. You'll need to reinstall XP in order to change to FAT 32.Windows 98 and up are compatible with FAT32. Windows 95 is also compatible, but requires a special program to create it.

NTFS is more reliable, and is for Windows 2000 and up.
Since NTFS was introduced, it has been an option in the operating system installer for 2000 and up. (At the partition screen)
You can choose to use FAT32 instead of NTFS

FAT is commonly used on many mass storage DEVICES still.

Are you sure its not a physical problem with the disk?
Thanks for the reply guys. I know Windows XP is compatible with FAT32, however from what I've been reading it looks like Windows XP MAKES it painstakingly hard to do it. Is there a way I can simply use Windows XP to partition a FAT32 drive without the need of a third party application? I know that "Partition Magic" lets you convert a Windows XP NTFS to a FAT32, but it's, from what I've read, very unreliable and when I tried it didn't work. That depends, are you willing to loose your data?

If you can loose all your data, then pop the Windows XP Installation disk in, and let it load
Once you agree to the EULA, (by pressing F8), and get to the Partition screen, delete your current partition, and then create a new one, and use the FAT32 system instead.

*Fact-O-Day*
You will loose all your data when you delete a partition. This is not reversible. I'm OK with losing my data. I haven't added anything important to it, knowing from the beginning that I was using it just to recover data off the other drive. Once this problem gets situated, however, I'll probably use it - it's better than the old drive. Right now I'm using my LAPTOP, all my essentials are on here.

When I try using the installation disk for Windows XP it only gives me the option of setting up a NTFS system. I'll try it again, however, making sure to completely delete the current partition - hopefully that'll bring about the FAT32 option.

EDIT
Alright, I've tried reinstalling the system again and the only options it gives me on setting up partitions is:
Partition disk with NTFS file system (Quick)
Partition disk with NTFS file system

EDIT
Alright, I've tried reinstalling the system again and the only options it gives me on setting up partitions is:

Partition disk with NTFS file system

Strange, it should have
FAT32 File System
FAT32 File System (Quick)
Partition disk with NTFS file system (Quick)
Partition disk with NTFS file system

Well, for the purpose of TROUBLESHOOTING:
Did you already try redoing everything with NFTS (not quick, the regular one) again?
Perhaps you should try that

And is this a regular IDE Cable drive? As far as I know it's a regular IDE drive. I'm reinstalling windows xp as we speak, on the desktop. My current plan is to either check and see if my HP System Recovery is still available (some HP desktops come with an in-system recovery) and see if that may allow installing Windows XP with FAT32. If that doesn't work, then I'm going to simply keep trying to use Partition Magic and see if it'll work... it failed the last time and is supposed to be unstable, but if I keep trying with it it's bound to work once.

I'll keep everyone updated!OK, I got the problem fixed!  I used Partition Magic, and when I installed the Windows XP installation it gave me the options of installing NTFS or keeping the current file system, which I did. From there I was able to change NTFS.SYS to NTFS.OLD in Safe Mode, then run CHKDSK on the corrupted drive, and change NTFS.OLD back to NTFS.SYS and can now access the drive completely with no problem!

Thanks for the help Good to hear you've got it solved.

Solve : REMOVING viruses,trojans-its removed my control panel?

Answer»

hi, i previously had a trojan called tibs c on my computer which i wasnt to concerned about however now i went on a website that randomly said "connecting to PC" or something like that and since then i can not enter my internet properties it SAYS i have insufficient admin rights and it has removed my control panel, furthermore when i do scan it find problems e.g. change to boot sector and in the C drive, however soon after some icon appears (yellow triangle with explanation mark) telling me to download some anti spywhere program which i havnt done so far as i dont trust the icon, can you please tell me a solution.

thankyousmitfruad infection, look here for help removing the infection.

what protections do you currently have on your computer? whats your OS?

also can you post a hijackthis log to be looked at?i am a bit of a novice at this, what is a hijack log, i have avg free protection on it and i have microsoft xphijackthis is a program to help us detect infections on your computer. don't worry its clean just don't remove anything without one of our instruction. do the system scan and save log and post the log on here. itll take up to 2 or 3 posts sometimes to get it all in.
Viruses can often get stuck and hidden in Window's system restore area. This recipe will describe how to remove this hidden danger if you get infected.
Virus checkers often have difficulty clearing infected virus files from your system restore directory.

If you have recently had a virus, most likely it is now stored in your system restore directory. This will cause problems because your virus checker will repeatedly find it but be unable to clear it. Likewise, if you ever need to restore that drive, the virus infected file will also restored.

This is easily fixed if you take a few precautions.

(Disclaimer: The safest course of action for a virus infected computer is to first backup everything. Some viruses are very destuctive and different virus cleaning software packages will have varying degrees of success cleaning the files without introducing errors. If one virus cleaner doesn't work, you can also restore and try a different one.)

On to cleaning out any viruses trapped in your system restore area...

1. First make sure you don't have any infected files anywhere else in your system. Run a complete search for your favorite (database recently updated) virus checker.
2. If viruses are found and cleaned, run those programs afterwards to insure they are running correctly.
3. If everything is running well, clear your system restore area by doing the following:
- Right-click on My Computer and select properties
- Select System Restore
- Select Turn Off System Restore On All Drives
- Select Apply
- There will be a warning saying that you will not be able to restore your computer after this point. (This is why it was important to make sure everything was running well before committing to this.)
- Select Yes Your system restore directories will be purged.
4. Repeat the process and turn system restore back on.

hi ive downloaded the stopzilla program but i cant get the hijack program to work (well install is the problem), is their any easy way to do this?what error are you recieving? and just open the zip file and make a folder called hijackthis on your desktop and drag the .exe file into hte folderIt should actually be installed in it's own folder...i don't name it HijackThis because some malware has been seen that is sophisticated enough to shut it down.

After installing it into it's own directory you can then place a shortcut on the desktop if need be.

P.S. To double check if Control Panel has been disabled run the following:

Start->Run->gpedit.msc->User Configuration->Administrative Templates->Control Panel

You need to be logged on as Administrator to make these CHANGES...Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Solve : Setup did not find any hard disk drivers installed in your computer?

Answer»

Laptop Specs
HP Compaq nx 6310
Centrino Duo
40 GB HDD
1 GB Memory

Hi! every one I was trying to install win XP on this Laptop and I got the following  error massage

Setup did not find any hard disk drivers installed in your computer

Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacture-supplied diagnostic or setup program.
Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3

I  tried  "HDD Self-Test
Options" option in computer setup(bios) and the diagnostics says that hard
disk is in order. Where is the problem? Thanx in advance
What could be possibly wrong?
Need help .
Is this a new hard drive ? ?
If so it needs to be formatted before Windows will see it.
If you have a floppy drive you can DLoad a BOOT disk from bootdisk.com to format the drive.
When finished remove the floppy and re-boot and XP should now pick up the HDD...Not really a new hard drive, the laptop as been used for sometime.

There was already windows XP installed on it but it got infected with virus and finally corrupted windows file, so we just decided to do a clean installation, thats when we get this error: Setup did not find any hard disk drivers installed in your computer
Sorry i dont a have floopy drive on it.

Any other suggestions? What changes did you make to the drive ? ?
It is being seen in the BIOS but not by Windows, correct ? ?
Is this a genuine XP CD you are using ? ?Intel Serial ATA (SATA) Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) Controller Driver. This package is used to create a diskette that is needed during a new operating system installation to ensure that the notebook hard drive is detected and usable for the installation.

nstallation Instructions

1. Download the SoftPaq .EXE file to a directory on your hard drive.
2. Execute the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.

To use the diskette during a new operating system installation, complete the following steps:

NOTE: A diskette drive is required to use this driver. If an external diskette drive is used, ensure it is plugged into the system.

1. Insert the operating system CD and Power On the notebook to boot from the CD.
2. At the very beginning of the operating system installation, the following prompt is displayed at the bottom of the screen: "Press F6 if you need to install a SCSI or RAID driver...." When the prompt is displayed, press F6.
3. Later in the operating system installation, you are notified that a mass storage device could not be detected. When this notification occurs, press S (S=Specify Additional Device).
4. When prompted, insert the diskette that was created from the SoftPaq file, and then press Enter.
5. Select Intel 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH7M) and press Enter.

NOTE: At this point, the following prompt MAY be displayed, depending on the version of your operating system CD. If the prompt is displayed, press Enter to use the default Windows driver and continue, if it is not displayed, simply continue with Step 6. The prompt reads as follows:

Windows already has a driver that you can use for "Intel (R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI controller (Mobile ICH7M)". Unless the device manufacturer prefers that you use the driver on the floppy disk, you should use the driver in Windows. S=use the driver on floppy ENTER=use the default Windows driver.

6. Continue with the operating system installation, as prompted.

Steps to modify a Windows XP image to support SATA Native Mode

1) Enter F10 Setup, and go to System Configuration/Device Configurations/SATA Native Mode to Disable.
2) Install Windows XP Service Pack 2 in whatever manner is typical for your organization.
3) Download the Intel SATA AHCI Controller Driver, SoftPaq SP32478.exe, from www.hp.com.
4) Extract all the files from the SoftPaq. A USB floppy is necessary for this step. Run sp32478; this will create a floppy disk. The files will be located on this floppy.
5) These files should be located on the floppy disk.
a. iaahci.cat
b. iaahci.inf
c. iastor.cat
d. iastor.inf
e. iastor.sys
f. license.txt
g. readme.txt
h. txtsetup.oem
6) Download and run the Intel Chipset Installation Utility for ICH7, SoftPaq SP32781, from www.hp.com.
7) In Device MANAGER, right-click the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers/Intel 82801 GBM/GHM (ICH7-M Family) Serial ATA Storage Controller and select "Update Driver".
Follow these steps to complete the Hardware Update Wizard:
a. At the first dialog, select "No, not this time" when prompted to connect to Windows Update.
b. At the next dialog, select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)".
c. At the next dialog, select "Don't SEARCH. I will choose the driver to install".
d. When prompted to select the device driver you want to install for this hardware, do not choose anything but click the "Have Disk..."-button.
e. Type "A:\" and click OK.
f. When prompted to select the device driver you want to install for this hardware, select the Intel 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller
g. A warning that Windows cannot verify that the device is compatible with your hardware will appear. When asked if you want to continue installing the driver, select Yes.
h. The installation will complete.
9) Shut down Windows and restart the computer. Enter F10 setup when prompted during the boot.
10) Go to System Configuration/Device Configurations/SATA Native Mode and change it to Enable, then save settings and EXIT F10 Setup.
11) After Windows restarts, the additional SATA components will be updated. A System Settings Change will appear. When asked "Do you want to restart your computer now?" click Yes.
12) When Windows restarts, the SATA AHCI drivers will be completely installed.

You need a USB-floppy for this since there are no floppy on the PC (or a USB memory stick that can simulate a floppy).
Or you can create the floppy-disk on another PC and burn a CD with the files on the floppy (or copy via network).

I dont recal making any changes to the laptop, yes it is being seen by bios.
The XP CD is genuine, yes.

Thanks for following up, i googled it and i found this info, in HP web forum.

Or you can create the floppy-disk on another PC and burn a CD with the files on the floppy (or copy via network).

With this info i was able to install win and its working just fine, once again thanks!

Solve : I cannot see anything besides my Windows XP background.?

Hi, I have a problem. A few HOURS ago, I deleted a file from my computer (I think it was a pf file) called KEYGEN something. I thought it was hazardous because it was made at the time I open a DOWNLOADED file. After I deleted it from the Recycle Bin, my screen flashd and went blank. All I can see if the background picture. I use the Task Manager to open files. I then restarted the computer and ran a virus scan and a spyware scan. I restarted again and I still have this problem. Please help me.  Can you do , cntrl alt and del ......... if so go file new task run and type explorer... i dont have a clue if this will work for you because i dont know  whats wrong with your computer give it a shot...

Tony Nothing happens with that method.  I don't even see the explorer process in the Process Tray.yh thats because its not running , you did go to file and type it in run right....... and then hit enter ...

Tony So,Have you tried booting in safemode and restoring to an
earlier time?Downloading is fraught with dangers.   Here's a quote about Keygens

It wasn't a keygen that I downloaded. -_- And that doesn't help me in any way.

But I haven't been seeing the warning and I want to unistall it. I cannto access the CONTROL Panel through Windows and the "control" function in Run. Is there another way to access the Control Panel?ZA uninstallThanks everyone for helping me. I have found the viruses (2 trojans that were both cleaned/deleted) and I defraged with IOBit SmartDefrag, then restarted, and everything was working fine. Solve : Lap top will not keep password?

Answer»

I have a Compaq M2000. When I apply PASSWORD In a few day`s I can just get on no password to logon to not even a prompt. Any Ideas? Are you talking about the bios password (i.e. a password you enter when you power up the computer) or a windows password?
If it's the bios one, how old is the laptop?
If the windows one, what version of windows are you using?
XP home and it is the windows password that will not stick. the laptop is still in warranty It is
6 mos oldWhen you said bios password it clicked, that is a better password then windows.
I tapped f10 key got into bios setup administrator, and win boot no one can access
my laptop now, Thanks for reminding me about bios Well glad I could help, but I find it very peculiar that the windows password just disappear.Yes I find it very odd too. I am on the internet constantly through a router. which has it`s own firewall. I wonder if it is possible someone was watching me put in password and took it out.
but I also put in password with wireless off. I have no clue. Do you have any anti virus protection installed? If so make sure its up to date and do a full scan of the computer.

You can also try to repair your system files.
To do this go to Start and select Run.
Type sfc /SCANNOW and press enter.
You will need your XP disc.

After its done, restart and try to SET a new password. To follow through I have TREND micro pccillin antivirus. Which it acts like zone alarm at times.iceaxe.

Just be sure to copy that password and save it in an extremely secure spot as it normally takes a repair shop to do an expensive servicing should you forget or misplace it.Thanks I keep under my hat so to speak and also have it written on the wall of my gun Safe.
I am not sure if anyone can get past bios password

Alan <><   I can go to the log on view. Log on but windows logs me off.Windows is updated to the latest edition. I am running EZ Antivirus. last time I could log on was 2 weeks AGO. I think it comes from an anti spy program. It DELETED something which I do not remember.
I tried with the recover CD but it does not accept my password. Can you get in to safe mode ? ?
Is the XP CD a Microsoft one or OEM ? ?
If it's OEM such as Dell HP Toshiba etc. you will lose all your data...

Are you saying you forgot your Windows Admin password ? ?

There are alot of variables here and more ways to approach this...post back with the info requested. No I can not get in in the safe mode. As soon I log on as Admin. the screen gets black and I see "safe mode" in the corners. After a few seconds  the blue windows log off screen comes on and logs me off.
This happens with the administrator and myself. I tried to boot with the CD but I have the same effect.
I have a OEM version from Dell.

No, I did not forget the password but Windows does not accept it. I was reading about loosing all the data on the message board  but I like to avoid this.

Since recovering your data is now the priority the safest method would be to hook up your drive jumpered as slave in another machine with a burner so you can retrieve/copy what you need from that drive...
In the meantime see if anyone has a MS XP CD of the same version you are running so you can try to recover your system using the Recovery console.
If so let us know so we can instruct further. Quote from: wefr0 on August 03, 2007, 07:19:06 PM

Solve : Internal Stack Overflow Message?

Answer»

Hi all
Sure hope I can get some help to this difficult problem. I'm running Windows 98
and getting the stack overflow message. It tells me to change stack settings in config.sys file. I can only get to the file by way of  prompt, can't even start in safe mode. When looking at this file to try to change the stacks  I see there is nothing under this file that says stacks. I do see REM      and a lot of other things such as HEADER    CD-ROM DRIVE  MISCEALLANEOUS       SCSI Controllers. There has got to be  something else I need to be doing. I'm lost and do not want to format my computer.  Thanks so much     knitwearTo avoid stack overflow your config.sys should contain these lines

STACKS=64,512
FILES=60
BUFFERS=40

Since my list does not contain any of this can I type it in and if so does it matter where? Do I need to take another step if I can't  type it in?

 My config.sys only contain this.

REM    HEADER
"         CD-ROM DRIVE
"         SCSI CONTROLLERS
"         DISPLAY
"         SOUND,MIDI OR VIDEO CAPTURE CARD
"         MOUSE

There are a few more items on the list but  stacks is not there. Please tell me why. Quote from: knitwear on July 18, 2007, 02:13:03 PM

Doesn't matter where.

Quote

Open the file in Notepad.

Quote
stacks is not there. Please tell me why.

Because you need to type it in. I don't KNOW where you got your config.sys from.

Okay. Maybe I'm just not explaining this correctly. Let me start from the very beginning. I am using an authentic & registered copy of Windows 98.

I loaded new software for a printer I was going to add.  The software let me know I needed more ram for it to work. I had 32 and it needed 64. Took 128 out of another computer (which was compatible) and added it to the one with 32.

Started running the software again and all was going well until it had a problem loading a file, then it would hang.  The only way to restart was to manually shut it down.  Since I did not shut it down the right way (when I restarted) the files had to be checked to make sure nothing was messed up. The computer will only check to  2% when it begins to tell me it cannot continue because of an  internal stack overflow. Change the config.sys file.

I shut the computer down the incorrect way again and when I restart I CONTINUALLY tap the F8 key so I can get the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu.
I choose #5 Command prompt only.  I put in c:\edit config.sys at the prompt.

It takes me to the file that says config.sys at the top.
Mind you I cannot use the mouse to click on anything because somehow it is disabled. I use F1 key to LEARN how to navigate from 1 spot to another. I typed in the info you gave me and turned it off manually(had no way of saving it first)  When I start it up again I get the same old message. Where am I going wrong. Remember I cannot even start in SAFE MODE.

PLEASE - PLEASE - PLEASE what is happening. I've got to find out how to solve this in case it ever happens again. Do not want to reformat. Thanks again      Knitwear

Okay   Can anyone help me. I'm just totally lost.

Finally changed the config.sys file and was able to restart but I am still getting an overflow message. Is there a way I can check the ram to see if its defective?

Even tried to erase my hard drive -  but the same old message. Tried calling  HP - the maker of the printer software  I was TRYING to install. They said they could not help  because they can't uninstall files from the c prompt.

I'm getting so frstrated. Looked at the microsoft SUPPORT site. Did not help.

Already know the ram I installed was compatible. Could there be a hardware conflict.?

I know I'm getting desperate cause I talked to Best Buy tech support  and I'm one to try as many ways as I can before I go there.

Does anyone think if I change stacks to  8 instead of 16 this would help.

Pleeeeeeeeeese help me!!!!!!!!   knitwear

have you update your windows?? i believe they fix an overflow errorI can't even reformat my hard drive. Stack overflow message comes on even then. I'll just keeping trying. Thanks for your help.Post a copy of your autoexec.bat and config.sys files here...

The last one didn't make any sense anyways. Quote

Solve : Resolved: Question About System Restore?

Answer»

My system restore folder is getting pretty HUGE. I know how to clear it out but what I'd like to know is if there is any way to only take out some of the files without deleting them all?To delete OLDER restore points, but leave the system restore turned on: Right Click the Drive in question/Properties/Disk Cleanup/More Options/System Restore/Cleanup.

You can also click the Settings button to set a maximum AMOUNT of space that you want each drive to use for restore information. If the drive you select isn't the system drive, you can also DISABLE System Restore on a per-drive basis. The maximum amount of space that you can use for restore information is 12 percent per drive.

You can disable system restore and delete all but the last system restore POINT, then enable it again.

Thanks a TON! I really appreciate it!

Solve : Windows broken?

Answer»

Ok my xp did not update or anything so i thought i would do a repair, i did. I inserted the xp setup disk and choosed repair. I left it and went to WATCH tv. When i came back it was installing another windows. So i cancelled by taking the disk out. It ASKED for me to instert the setup disk so i click cancel and every time i start windows it says resuming setup please wait and it askes me to insert a setup disk if i dont it will restart and ask me to do the same again. So i kept cancelling untill i got fed up. So i left the disk in and let it install another windows.

Then it came up a bsod but not the normal one. It said there was a fatel error it needs more diskspace. It must be installing on the 2gb hard disk. No matter what i do i cant exit this if i boot in safe mode it just says ''windows cannot start in safe mode''

Heres the bsod error code:

0x0000007e (0xc0000005,0x805dbc15, 0xf79f?698,0xf7fd394

This is ruffly it.

The ? = a ''D'' or a ''5''

Please help me.... :oops:did you use the orginally cd that came with the computer??Sounds like you might have ruined your Windows instalation completely.

If you have all your important data BACKED up, and you think you are ready to loose everything on your hard drive, then I recommend that you completely redo everything.
(Reformat it, loosing all your data, documents, music, etc)

Why?

If you go ahead trying to install Windows XP again, you are going to get one heck of a funky INSTALLATION. (Like my Windows 98 SE 1/2)
This will result in a few errors, and possibly slowed performance.

If you must keep the installation, would you mind telling us exactly what the disk usage status on all your drives are?

When you "left the disk in and let it install another windows", did you do a repair install? Or a COMPLETE install?
A repair install of XP will look like it's installing it again...you shouldn't have interrupted it but it's too late now.

Repair Install of XP

It may work the 2nd time however i agree with Zylstra...if you have saved the data you need do a clean install....if you haven't you may want to try the repair install again using the instructions above.

Solve : Interesting problem with hard drive?

Answer»

Having a problem attempting to access and remove data stored on a 80gb laptop hard drive currently in a 2.5" hd enclosure. I'm trying to get into the documents stored under the main user which was PASSWORD protected. It is from a laptop running windows XP, the laptop motherboard was turned to toast via a significant power surge that enabled dc current to FLOW to the MOBO through a USB connection.

It was my wife's pc, my mother in law went to plug it in to charge the battery and instead of plugging the laptop's power supply into the pc she accidently plugged the power supply into the chill PAD that was connected to the pc with USB. This caused the fans in the chill pad to run like small jet engines and fried the laptop.

If anyone can tell me how to make this previously password protected data accessible on the hard drive so that I can get the rest of the baby PICTURES of our 4 month old son off of the hd I would greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Jeff
Just so I'm clear on this, do you not remember the password or have you never known the password?

Solve : outlook express slow send?

Answer»

Hi again,
I have an irritating problem with OE. When I send emails it takes up to 30 seconds to send them. This may not seem very long, however until a short time ago they went almost instantly. I have emptied folders and defragged.

Any ideas people?

Cheers,

Graham. How long since you compacted messages?  If not done recently, you might try that.  To compact, go to Tools, Options, Maintenance tab, CLICK on Clean Up Now (button), and the click on Compact.  Let us know if that made a difference.Hi, have compacted messages and emptied folders where possible. It's still taking 30 to 45 seconds to send which seems for ever compared to what it was like before. However, receiving messages is still as quick as it was before. I suppose I can live with it but it don't seem right to me. Still, I feel better now I have had a MOAN. If you have any flashes of brilliance they will be gratefully received.

Cheers,

Graham. Are you sending ATTACHMENTS with these messages?  Does a single, simple, message containing only text take that long?

What type of Internet connection (dialup, DLS, ...) do you have?  Have you ever done a speed test to test your Internet connection speed?Hi, sending simple, single text only messages takes that long.  I am using Tiscali broadband which is running at around 4 meg (says Tiscali). When I do speed tests using other line test providers it tends to vary. I have just noticed when I click on "send"  there is a message in bottom right corner, "trying to connect", once connected it goes straight away. So, it is the connecting bit that is taking the time.   You might review your OE account settings:     Setting up Outlook Express Email.  You might try deleting your account and then setting it up from as a new account.

Do you know other users of Tiscali broadband?  Do they have the same problem?  Can you contact Tiscali support by email or phone about this problem?  Hi, have done the OE sttings check. Also, have CONTACTED Tiscali by email but guess what no reply (as yet). Thanks to all for your efforts but I become more and more convinced it is down to Tiscali rather than an OE malfunction.

Cheers,

Graham. I suspect the same...is the same lag present when you open a web page for example ? ?Hi, Yes it was somewhat slow in opening web pages, however, have just come in this afternoon and switched on comp. (3.35pm). Checked and sent mail and for some unknown reason it is now zooming. It is connecting and sending as quick as it ever did before. I have absolutely no idea why that should be unless the Tiscali Email fairy  has been round while I was out. I HOPE this speed of communication will continue(we shall see).

Thanks once again.

Graham. They must of heard you were starting to get ticked off at them and flipped "the switch"...

If you need more information please let me know.

I want a small program, preferably written in assembly, to show my internal and external I P addresses if this problem can't be solved.  I hope that this is the appropriate forum. I apologize if it isn't.Try This Fixpatio, just downloaded it. going now to try it. thanks.  you folk ever sleep, play with kids and other mundane GLORIES? I have gotten the fastest answers..wow! thank you. I'll get back with the result.I play with my kids, nephews and nieces every day on top of earning a paychek and keeping the ship sailing...

But i get alot of satisfaction here as well seeing problems resolved.

BTW i knew i recognised that name from somewhere...Elder Geek or Lockergnome ? ?

Welcome Aboard ! !lockergnome was first place i found to get help as a newbie. i am an old man and much of this tech stuff was the subject of the science fiction of my youth. Forums and you knowledgeable younguns have saved me money, time, and bother.  i feel dumb because the error message told me what to do.  my daughter, lockheed martin engineer, WOULD know immediately. the winsock fix didn't work, but i downloaded and stowed it away on external hard drive for the future.

i was missing the mswinsck.ock; it is suppose to be  in windows\system32 as i found  finally on the fourth page of a google search.  you can download it from here

 http://www.slamnet.org.uk/mswinsck.htm

i've been a bit peeved. recently i took this computer to   geek squad     to get a new hard drive installed.  they wanted to test memory. i say, okay. picked it up. home several days of quirkiness and i discovered diagnostic disc they left in dvd/cd drive. the problems intensified.  a comcast installer told me of local computer, mom and pop store  which was inexensive and good.
geek squad cast me 250, and this place, DTM Computer charged flat fee labor of 49 dollars.  i had to get a new burner, a LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1P. i was going to buy Roxio for 80 bucks, but the tech said download CDBurnerXP free burn software.  DTM cost me 49 for labor, burner 39 bucks for total of 88 plus 10 tip. they fixed the problems geek squad caused, installed new fan (geek squad missed that).   the burner is fast and accurate; the software works better than Roxio. i plan to sue geek squad/best buy in small claims court.  my brain is dulled by the whole mess.
i learned one lesson: check out local computer stores, they probably work to retain you as customers.   anyway i was missing the ock. i want to know why it was missing.  o well, scifi. i'm living in the future. do you know i have a small, mobile communicator?   been alone here for a week, apologize for venting on you. what's yer fee for analysis?

stay away from geek squad!Well i recognised the name right away but LG was about 3 0r 4 years ago for me...too many changes.

I'm glad you found us and if we can save you some of your hard earned money all the better !

I think you'll really like the crew here.... a bunch of swell people with a solid mixture of expertise in every area.

So pull up the easy chair make yourself at home and enjoy the surroundings.

p.s. Analysis sessions...well we can work something out !

Solve : Windows updating need help!!:-[?

Answer»

hello guys, i have some problems here regarding on my win xp.. coz, it was being virus i when i tried to use my anti-virus i still can't get rid of the virus that was in my computer. So, i decided to repair it, but repairing my OS i encountered some errors, such as: could not copy some files during loading the files that need to be copy. but i still continue it coz there is an option given that press "ESC" to escape the file that cannot be copy. After that, when i finished on the loading area for the COPYING of files i am now in the "installing windows" and during the registering of components my pc got hang so i decided to restart it then i go back again to the "Installing windows but now during the "installing of Devices" it still can't continue. can u please tell me why is this so? can i recover my files? what shall i do? please HELP me... ASAP! thnx Your data may be gone...
How did you attempt a repair ? ?

Did it re-boot on it's own ? ?

Is this a genuine XP CD ? ?i repair by inserting the win xp cd... at first it gives an option press enter if you want to install win xp another is that press r to repair and i choose the 1st option.. i press enter and after that it ask another question.. press r if you want to repair win xp or else press ESC to install win xp.. and i choose the 1st option again. i press r in order to repair my OS..

yah, it reboot on it's own. then after it was being restarted thats what happend... yah, my XP cd is genuineThe safest method at this point would be to hook up that drive in another MACHINE as a slave drive and BACKUP all the data you need before proceeding...

Then you can attempt the repair install again.

Repair Install of XP

One reason this may be happening is if you have changed or added any new hardware recently...is this the case ? ?ummm... i have change the memory of my pc because i want it to become faster..... because before its memory is just 256 mb so i buy another memory which 512 mb so it will become faster... Follow what's been suggested so far...you may have gotten the wrong RAM.

Check crucial.com's WEBSITE to see what type is compatible for your machine.ok tnx... for your help sir!!You're Welcome...

Let us know how it goes.

Solve : What is contiguous space on a hard disk??

Answer»

I need some helpI assume you mean "contiguous free disk SPACE". Hard drives are divided in to blocks of a certain size. When your operating system needs to save a FILE it is SPLIT up into pieces that FIT into these blocks.
The system tries to save the file to a sequence of adjacent free blocks because it's faster to find the file again if its not scattered all over the hard drive. Contiguous free disk space is a sequence of blocks large enough to hold a given file.

If your system is giving you an error about too little contiguous free disk space you need to defrag it or POSSIBLY free up more disk space.contiguous means "joined together without any gaps".

Solve : XP media center edition won't boot up?

Answer»

My Dell has XP media center edition. Here's the problem. The other day, my girl was on the computer and stepped on the surge protector by mistake and shut it off. Now the darn THING won't boot up. It gets stuck on the windows loading screen where the bars go back and forth on the screen.

It won't boot at all. Safe mode does not WORK, last known config does not work, and booting up normally doesn't work either. I hope someone has some ideas as to what to try to repair it. I don't have a cd. All I can do is restore to factory settings but then all of my music and pictures will be gone. I hope someone can help me get it to boot up.

I also tried putting the hard drive into another computer so I could at least back it up, but I can't get the computer to recognize the hard drive.

It has 2 gigs of memory, USB wireless Dell mouse and keyboard, and the hard drive is SATA.

I also tried putting another IDE hard drive into that machine and booted up to that but it still wouldn't see the SATA hard drive. I really don't want to lose everything. Help please...
contact dell and have them send you the cds... and ask them what to do...

try making sure the computer is unpluged from the power and hold the power button in to discharge any LEFT over power then open the case and look for a silver battery it looks like a watch battery near the mother board take it out for like 40 or so seconds and then put it back in and then try to restart your computer.I'll try that. I was hoping that someone could tell me of some third party software that I could use to repair my windows...

Or some way of backing up my data. try this I can't since I don't have the CD. It's a Dell and all I can do is revert to factory default settings.

I tried booting to a windows xp home edition cd I have from another computer to try and repair it with that but it would not see the SATA hard drive...contact dell and have them mail you the right cds they will i have done it plenty of timesDo you know about how much they will charge for the cd's? The warranty ran out in march.ummm im not sure hopefully just shipping. Thanks a bunch. I'll try that.welcome keep us postedBefore contacting DELL, I tried one more thing. I downloaded a bootdisk from bootdisk.com that allows you to see NTFS drives. Well I was able to see it so that's good. I installed another hard drive in the system so I could back up information from the C drive. It boots to a command prompt. I think I typed in xcopy c: d:\stuff /e

It did not copy the entire drive. Is there a switch or something I am missing to copy everything? I don't really need everything but I figured I'd copy the whole thing and then delete what I don't need. The 2nd hard drive is FAT32. I also tried copying certain directories but it doesn't seem to copy everything in the directory and doesn't copy any subdirectories...

Am I doing something wrong? I haven't worked with a command prompt in a looooong time.I fixed it! I booted up to the bootdisk with NTFS support, and when I couldn't copy the files that I NEEDED, I just ran chkdsk on the C drive, and it fixed the problem. Booted up and all is good. I backed up the data right away.
