Solve : how do i make text fit a window when shrinking?

Answer»

Hi, Does anyone know how to make text and pics  shrink with the window and not dissapear when shrinking the window?
Hope i haven`t made that sound to complex?
What program?

Perhaps a setting such as 'word wrap'?What programe?

XP, firefox as stated in the BANNER(althought the i.s.p is incorrect what you said}

i use firefox here and I.E at work both 6.5 and 7.0

All i want to do is have it so if i reduce the window size the text pics and info stays inside it.

Thanks if you can help. You can reduce the size of text but not the pictures.  To reduce text size, one way is to hold Ctrl and use the wheel on a mouse to reduce or increase the text size or use Ctrl/+ to increase and Ctrl/- to decrease.  The other way is through the menu, on both IE and Firefox.

To change the size of both text and pics, you would need to change resolution in your Display SETTINGS; keep in mind, that would affect EVERYTHING on your screen, not just the browser window.

Solve : Problem with Windows XP after updating AGV?

Answer»

Have been using AVG anti-virus software for over a year, never had a problem till recently when I turned the computer on and it asked if I wanted to download an updated version of AVG... I clicked OK... it then requested that I restart so that the settings COULD take effect... so, I did. When it came back it didn't load Windows XP properly... It displayed a message stating that it couldn't load the user's settings due to insufficient resources. I could log in but I had no menu options and when I pressed Ctrl-Alt-Del it couldn't access tskmgr.exe - it gave me an error message. I also got messages LIKE: RUNDLL32.EXE - bad image; C:\\Windows\system32\Nvcpl.dll - error loading due to insufficient resources. I thought it got a virus from the AVG download which maybe didn't come from AVG... I wasn't really paying attention at that time but I've since realized that AVG doesn't [usually] ask that you restart so that updates can take effect.

I took it to a computer repair shop where they "fixed it"... only to bring it home to find that nothing had changed. When I called to tell them this, they said they had removed and reloaded AVG, scanned and repaired the registry, and removed spy ware. Everything was working fine. A friend of mine then took it to their house where AVG was removed and reloaded and gave it back to me saying that it was fine. I brought it home and the first time I started up everything looked normal. But, the next time I started up, it had gone back to it's problems!??!! I then discovered that it was hit-and-miss - sometimes it started up normally, sometimes it didn't. One night, I spent about 20 minutes rebooting it before Windows loaded properly and everything worked normally.

I finally removed AGV and downloaded AVAST and it's been working WELL for two days.

Does anyone out there have any idea whether this problem is specific to AGV's latest version or whether there is something wrong with the computer? If this is something that may happen again, I want to fix it. So far, AVAST seems fine but I had used AGV for some time and I had never had a problem.

Thanks all.I have not seen or heard of this issue with AVG...a quick at their Forums did not yield any results either.
The Windows error supposedly relates to Roxio from what i found/
I'll do some more digging but in the meantime post back with some more info and specs on your setup...Thanks very much. Specs are: CPU-AMD Athlon XP2600+, Samsung 80GB hard drive, 512 MB 333 MHZ RAM, Asus A7V8X Mainboard, Windows XP Home Edition, GeForce FX5200 Video Card. Computer is 3 yrs. old.

Last year, I was messing around and erroneously deleted some set up files... the shop where I purchased the computer repaired it by wiping the hard drive clean and re-installing all the programs... that was about 7 months ago.

I don't run/use anything unusual on the computer. I also have: Ad-Aware 2007, Firefox, IncrediMail, Nero OEM, Spybot 1.4. I have never downloaded Roxio. Since the removal of AVG, it's still working as normal. I would still like to GET to the bottom of what caused, or could once again cause, the problem. I appreciate your feedback and help and that of anyone who takes this on.

Thanks all.
I've been using AVG for years and I've never heard of this. They never ask if you want to update to a newer version. The fact that you were asked to re-start tells me that you've downloaded a bogus program with bugs. Yeah, SuperDave, I would certainly agree that it must of been a bogus program with bugs but why can't I use AVG anymore. My virus checker comes up clean. AVG has thrice been removed and re-installed and appears to cause the problem when installed. I've been using Avast for three days without problems. AVG will only check for virus. Have you TRIED checking for other spyware or malware?Dave it may have corrupted some system files...
Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.Did you try AVG's Anti- Spyware ?

Here-->AVG-Anti-Spyware-7.5.1.43 I appreciate all the feedback. Thanks. I tried Start/Run and typed in sfc /scannow and hit Enter... but, the only Windows XP CD I have is a Recovery CD for Windows XP Home Edition. ...It didn't accept that... it said that's not the correct CD.

I keep the computer clean by running Spybot and Ad-Aware a few times a week. I haven't tried AVG's Anti-Spyware. I don't think it's a spyware or malware problem... I still don't know why the problem has disappeared since I started using Avast anti-virus. It appears that an AVG anti-virus download causes the problem.I've submitted a message to the folks at Grisoft...i'll let you know when i recieve a reply.
Meanwhile Avast is also a very good protection program so hopefully you should be fine.
The program street recommended above is a different type of scanner...it used to be known as Ewido and AVG liked it so much they bought it.
It specialises in trojans and keyloggers which most AV programs misss so it would be worth adding to your arsenal.
Take Care and Welcome to CH !Thanks so much. Computer still working well with Avast. I'll check back for your msg re. Grisoft's take on the AVG prob.

Also, I've downloaded AVG-Anti-Spyware-7.5.1.43. It's great. Thanks for the tip.

Thank to everyone for the replies.

hijackthis is a very powerful program, please do not remove anything with the supervision of someone who knows what they are doing. with that said just because hijackthis lists it as missing don't mean its not on your computer.

Solve : Listing of files in folder is SLOW !!?

Answer»

I'm running XP Pro SP2 (current updates) on an Intel Core2 2.66 CPU with 1 gb of memory. The problem folders are any with PHOTO files in them. In particular, I have many folders with up to 200 photos in them and on my old 1 Ghz machine the file list would populate in a few seconds and I could immediately ask for thumbnails and get them all within a 3-5 seconds.

On this machine, after clicking on the folder, the photo files show up quickly but the little icon in front of each file, has a small part that changes from hollow to a dark fill color. I can WATCH the color change proceed down the page at a slow pace, about 1 icon per second. On my old machine the icons in the entire 200 file folder would change within a few seconds.

I've found that when I wait for all the icons to change, I can then get thumbnails pretty quickly, about the same as on the old machine. But if I click on thumbnails before all icons have CHANGED then I have to wait for the thumbnails until all icons have changed over. If I leave that directory and come back to it in a few minutes there is no problem, everything is fast as it should be. But If I turn off the PC and boot up later, then I have to wait for those icons to change (register?) again..

I'm thinking that this might be a switch someplace that is set different from what was on my old PC but then again, maybe it is due to all the new hardware in this new PC (MOTHERBOARD, one of the harddrives, a DVD-RW,  etc.). I'll welcome any ideas on this as it is a VERY frustrating issue when I need to work on my photos.
have you tried to defrag your computerYes, I defrag a couple of times every month as well as run two different anti-Spyware programs. I also just switched from McAfee AV to AVAST based upon HEARING that McAfee is known to slow down systems due to its massive overhead. No improvement with these photo folders.Turn off thumbnail view in Explorer...Thumbnails weren't the issue. It was waiting for the "detailed" listing of all the files to get "registered" or whatever was happening to the files as the little icons changed color.

A contributor on another forum gave me the answer just minutes ago.
For those who may have the same problem in the future, here is the answer I got..

"Photoshop inserts a new function having to do with creating thumbnails of images that it is associated with. If you right click on a jpg or tif or similar and select Properties, you will see a tab called Photoshop Image. All you have to do is to uncheck the Generate Thumbnails box and this won't happen again for any of the filetypes that Photoshop is associate with."

And as soon as I unchecked the Generate Thumbnails box on ONE photo file, my entire photo library now responds instantly...     Yahooo!!   Back in business..

Solve : can't boot win xp after using freedos?

Answer»

Ibooted FREEDOS from a disk and USED kernel.sys or sys(don't remember) and now
when i boot up it says freedos root_
Please help.If you have access to the recovery CONSOLE (either via boot menu or from the XP installation cd) you can run fixboot or fixmbr. :)No, I don't have that but i do have ubcd(ULTIMATE boot).
I'm not exactly sure what the problem is. So I don't want to take unnecessary actions. Of course recovery console shouldn't make it any worse, it's for windows after all, but I don't have it. everyone have is. put your xp cd in.can't FIND it. Quote from: aaach on August 02, 2007, 01:54:09 PM

Solve : Logon Script?

Answer»

Hello all,

This is my first post, obviously, and I just had a quick question.  I help run a network at a school, and we are running Windows 2K3 with the client computers running Windows XP.  My question is, when I make a logon script, it shows the cmd prompt as the script is running.  Is there anyway to get RID of this?  I would LIKE the script to STILL run, but I do not want the USERS seeing the script running.

Thanks for help in advance,
Greg.

Also, if this is in the wrong section, I'm sorry.there should be a cmd window that opens for a few seconds and then closes.   does it stay open?It opens, and then closes.  My thing is that I don't want it to show.  I didn't know if there was a way to minimize it, or make it hidden to the user.

Solve : Batch running in background?

Answer»

Hello,

I have a java programm running from 'planned tasks' on system start, using a user with administrator RIGHTS on XP.
This java programm starts at a given time a msdos batch file which runs - let's say -  a logoff command.
If i'm logged on with the same user as the java program runs under, every thing WORKS as expected. The user is logged off.
If another user is logged in, the batch file seems to run normally, but nothing happens!! No logoff or ANYTHING else!!!!

What am i doing wrong?

Thanks for help...
ummm is the other person using the same account or a different ONE. if different the program might need to be on both accounts. Perhaps you should tell us the exact goal of the script, and post PART of it

It could be that the program that the batch file executes is in use by another user.
Can the program be used by more than one user at once?

Solve : How do I enable ISA to PCI routing in WindowsXP??

Answer»

My Computer:
Dell OptiPlex GX1
WindowsXP Pro, version 2002, Service Pack 2
Intel Pentium Processor
397 MHz, 128 MB of RAM
Dial-Up 56K modem

My problem:
About a month ago I upgraded to WindowsXP and lost the sound on my pc, WELL didn't completely lose it, it sounds scratchy/staticy. It sounds like distorted dial up. For the past month I've been searching and trouble shooting every possibility and finally discovered that is because Microsoft decided they nolonger wanted to support old ISA 16-bit cards. The ISA to PCI routing is disabled by default in Windows XP. I found this info in a forum on the Dell website (I should have Bookmarked the page):

With 2000 or XP with service packs ISA IRQs are not enabled and ISA cards are not supported.
Crystal Audio is an ISA card.

To resolve this behavior, enable the ISA-to-PCI routing feature to allow these ISA Cards to function in the computers:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
2. Locate and click to select the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\PCMCIA\Parameters
3. On the Edit menu, click New, click DWORD Value, type DisableIsaToPciRouting in the NewValue box, and then press ENTER.
4. Click to select DisableIsaToPciRouting, click Edit, and then click Modify.
5. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.   Thats a ZERO not an Oh
6. Quit Registry Editor.
This procedure enables PCI routing for 16-bit PC Cards aka ISA cards.

Legacy crystal Audio is ISA not PCI sound.

PC99 spec from microsoft indicates that ISA slots and therefore ISA cards are no longer supported.
Microsoft did not like dealing with older Items so it started "dropping support" for things like
SERIAL Mice, ISA cards, Parallel Ports that are ISA, Bus Mouse ports that are ISA, non plug and play
as well as Plug and play NIC, Sound, and other things ISA.

I tried this but it did nothing, I still have distorted sound. I tried to email Microsoft, but they still have not gotten back to me.
I took the XP off and put the ME back and the sound worked great, but after getting used to WinXP the WinME kinda stinks. So, I upgraded back and I'm determined to find a "fix". Can anyone help me out?Did you remember to re-boot after making the registry changes ? ?
This needs to be done to save the changes.

Do you have an available PCI slot ? ?Wow, you're quick!
It wasn't in the instructions to restart, so I probably didn't...unless I was prompted to? When you quit the registry Edit does it promt you to resart? I did this over a week ago (I laso have three kids, a husband, dog, cat....life gets a little distacting, I can't always remeber the little details. LOL). I have no availible slots, the sound card in there is integrated. Oh yeah, I ment to mention the make and model of the sound card too incase it matters.
Crystal Sound CS4236b Audio SystemI think you're heading down a dead end road here.  If you had an empty PCI slot, you could install a sound card in it.

Anyway, I'd hate to be running Win XP with 397 MHz, 128 MB of RAM.  If you can't add more RAM, I'd stick with Win ME on that computer; actually, I'd probably DUMP ME and get Win 98SE on ebay.  Really? I've noticed everything is faster since I put XP on here.
I might cave and return to ME though, this PC is going to be for my kids and their games, so I guess it doesn't really matter if its got XP or ME....or even 98SE (the sound is what they need). I think I even still have a win98SE disk.
Now all I have to do is find an external dial up modem for my new pc, so I can get online with it and give this pc to my kids.
Thanks.I would recommend Zoom for a dial-up modem....great product.
Try at newegg.com if you're in the States.Regarding external modems,   over the years I've used several USRobotics modems.   From 14.4 to 56K.    All were excellent.

Some of the last external modems I used were Multi-Tech.   These too worked very well.

Not knocking Zoom...   I've CERTAINLY heard about them ...  just never used one.
Just wanted to add my comments on my positive experience with those two brand names.CrankyCheryl, you say you have no available slots.  How MANY PCI slots does that computer have?  If none are empty, what's in them? How many ISA slots does it have? What's in them?

Solve : Speakers not working...has to do with windows actual speakers are fine?

Answer»

A week ago a bubble popped up on my desktop offering to clear space because i was running out of memory on my computer. I clicked it (shouldn't have) and it "cleared space" but now my computer won't play any sound. i have Dell speakers and they work fine because i can plug them into my ipod and play that. I already did the Control Panel-Sounds and Audio Devices-Audio tab but once I get to the audio tab this website TELLS me to click "Advanced" under "sound playback". However, I don't even have the option of clicking that button. it won't let me click it. Also, there is no Volume control icon on the bottom right corner of my screen (next to the clock). like there should be. I really need helpGo to control panel - open sound Icon - put a check mark in the box.
Place Volume Icon in Taskbar

Windows XP
See if your sound has been stopped in Services Under
Windows Audio.
Start - Control Panel - Open Administrative Tools - Open Component Services - Click Services (Local) and Scrowl down the list to Windows Audio to see if it says - STARTED. If stopped
Left click Windows Audio and click restart. -
Or
Right click Windows Audio - left click Properties - Left click Start

If the above doesn't work, go to control panel and open System Icon -
Hardware Tab - Device Manager - Click the + Plus sign for Sounds.......... -
Right click REALTEK AC 97 (Or whatever Sound you have) - Left click - UPDATE Driver.
To update you will need the CD that came with your computer
If you have the CD that came with your computer you should be ABLE

Solve : No Audio when trying to play .avi and MP3?

Answer»

When I try to play an .avi file in Windows media player, I get the video but no audio.  I try to play it in DivX, and I get a message that says

This File contains a track in the MPEG-1 Layer-3
Audio(mp3) (code "85") format.  You may need to
install a DirectShow decoder for this audio format in
order to hear the soundtrack of this file.

I seem to have lost my most basic of audio decoders.  Please HELP.  My wife and I would like to watch a movie tonight, but I cannot get any MP3 sound.Srry for the double post here.  I thought I should also add that I tried re-installing over my existing Windows Media Player (11) to try and fix the decoder, but that didn't work either. That sounds pretty weird.
The Windows MP3 decoder is actually a part of DirectX so you could try reinstalling it. You can download it here.

What version of Windows is this?

It's Windows XP Pro.  I'm gonna try re-installing DirectX.

**EDIT**
Ok.  I tried re-installing DirectX, but still nothing.  I try to play an mp3 music file with Windows Media Player and I get this:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there might be a problem with your sound or video device. Try installing an updated device driver.

I can try to install a new driver for my card but I need to know if it's just the sound card, or the video card, or both.

It seems to me that it's got nothing to do with my actual sound or video card, but rather it seems to be something software related, like a virus or spyware/malware.  I've been running an anti virus/spy/malware software that my internet service provider gives out.  It seemed to work fine for the longest TIME, not slowing down my computer or anything, and keeping my COMP safe.  But one day, it just stopped working when I tried to manually scan a file.  I henceforth deleted the file without opening it.  But I think that was the start of all my problems.  Now my comp runs slow as heck, where it was running quite fast before.  Someone please help me solve the issue with the sound first, then we can work on the rest please.Try and take a look in the device manager and see if your sound and video card are detected properly.
To get to device manager right click My Computer and select Properties.
Select the Hardware tab and press Device Manager.
Is there a yellow question mark or red X next to your sound card or video card? The answer is no.  and like I said.  there is no problem with my hardware.  I see video just fine, and I hear sound just fine.  I just can't play mp3 audio.DRIVERS can and do get corrupted from time to time...re-installing the drivers won't harm anything.
Theres also the POSSIBILITY that card has gone South on you all of a sudden. If you want, you can try using VLC, a free media player, instead of Windows Media Player.

To download VLC, go to this website.Well thanx for trying to help ppl.  I had a friend of mine fix my computer.  I don't know what he did, but it works now.  so thanx.  As for the VLC media player, I tried that, but it still didn't work.  But thanx for the help.Glad to hear your issue is resolved...thanx for letting us know.
And stop by anytime.

Solve : Runtime error help?

Answer»

I am running software specific for our PRACTICE. I am running Windows 2000 on all three networked computers. Everybody can connect to each other to share files. When I connect to the software database over the network on my Dell PowerEdge 1400, I can connect to the database but as soon as I try to do anything in a patient account I get the following error:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\ART\Office\MSACCESS.EXE
abnormal program termination

Then the software quits and I'm back at SQUARE one.

My network guy says its a software error but my software guy says it must be a network error since my other two computers have no problem with the software.

I'm almost bald from pulling out my hair TRYING to figure this out. Help!! Anybody??

Stumped by PCsis the software on each computer or is it over a network that each computer has access to the program?
The software is on each computer. They share the main database that is stored on an external harddrive.the problem computer does it have remote access to this external??
Remote access? Not sure what to tell you. I am connected with C5 cable from the problem computer to a Linksys which is how I connect to the network through a workgroup. Does that help?Is the external hdd connected to a computer or directly into the network hub?The external harddrive is connected to a little computer (w/2G harddrive) as a workstation connected with a monitor. The little computer is connected to the Linksys.

Even when I had the external harddrive connected directly to the problem computer (USB port), I got a RUN time error running the database. Also, it would not allow me to copy the database to the problem computers harddrive though I could copy any other type of file from the external harddrive to the problem computer.

Lastly, I have been able to backup the database to a laptop with no problem.

What a tangled mess!!! Help!!

javedHave you tried to talk with whoever is in charge of the Outlook Web Access server? yes
but the problem is that when i highlight the unread MARK in Microsoft Outlook express. the mails can be seen in my owa. agin when i read this mail it lost somewhere but the server has mails. So your problem is with Outlook Express then? Do I understand you correct in that your emails DISAPPEAR when they get marked as read? What does Outlook Express have to do with OWA?  Nothing, as I understand it.  Outlook, yes; Outlook Express, no.Well no offline mail PROGRAM has anything to do with OWA but obviously that's the program he is using to download his mail. I've used Thunderbird TOGETHER with an OWA enabled mail server for that matter.

Solve : what is f-mit.msi?

Answer»

Just this morning my computer started to try to Load "f-mit.msi" I get this:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is
unavailable. Check O.K. to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder
containing the installation package
F-MIT.msi in the box below"
ALSO, if I try to get rid of the box, this comes up: Error 1706. No valid
source could be found for
product F-MIT. The Windows installer cannot continue.

It then actually tries to install, something, but cannot, and the error msg.
appears again.
There is nothing I am trying to install.

I have not tried to install anything for a while now and this does not exist on my computer as FAR as I know.

It is slowing things down and I can not find anything about it on the web.
Please helpEither you have tried to install something that has failed. Or an AutoD\load
has failed.
_is146\ suggests an installshield package. But .msi are usually MS packages.
The reason for the `Temp` folder bit, is because that is where it WOULD have
been put to prepare for install.
So you can Restore your computer to a previous time. Or remember what has
been installed\updated when this started to happen......

Tony I have not tried to install anything for a while at least a week or more. It happend over night while nobody was at the computer.
How would I restore the computer?go to all programs .... files ... system tools..... then system restore...

Tony Thanks, but before I do this will it mess anything up. This computer has one program that two other COMPUTERS work from. They all share a specific database for only one program. I want to be sure it wont mess up the other two computers or the shared files. well it wont mess anything up no.... you might loose some data ...... because it RESTORES your computer to a earlier date.....

Solve : Windows Problem!?

Answer»

Hey everyone today i tried reformating my pc with the XP disk. I whent through everything and when the computer started everything was uninstalled like i wanted but every file was still in the c and d drive.... so i did it again and now i got everything on the d drive uninstalled and a new copy of Windows XP on the d drive. So now what this mean is i got a copy of XP on the C drive and now the D Drive..... this is pissing me off. all i want to do is remove everything on the c drive and and d and only have xp on the c drive please help!!

thankyou
Is D: a SEPARATE physical drive or are C: and D: partitions on a single drive?

C: and D: are partitions on a single drive.OK.   Here's what I would do.  Capitals and underlining are for emphasis only.

I assume you currently have a multi-booting system and must select either C: or D: from which to boot.

1..   Boot to the copy of XP on the C: partition.
2..   Click Start>Run type CMD in the dialog box and click OK.
3..   At the Command Prompt type CD\ to BRING up the C: prompt.
4..   At the C: prompt type FORMAT D: /FS:NTFS (note the command is Format D: etc).   Respond Y to the file deletion WARNING message.  Partition D: will be formatted, all files on that partition will be lost.

You should now only have XP installed on C: drive but you may have to edit your Boot.ini file to remove reference to to the copy of XP which was on D: drive.  Post back if you need help with this.  You COULD boot from your XP cd,  format C: partition and reinstall XP if you wish.  The MS KB ARTICLE is here.

All of the above could be achieved by booting from the XP cd but, as I said, that's how I would do it.

Good luck

Thank you so much for your help i will try right now.  I will post back if it worked or if i need help.Ok it worked everything is off the D Drive.  But when i restart it it still asks me if i wana boot from the D drive.  I think i gota edit the Boot.ini like you said.  If you could please tell me how to do that.    Once again Thank you very much.I think i know how to edit it ( i looked at a microsoft page ) But please tell me how you would do it

ThanksExcellent - just follow the instructions on the MS KB

Below is a copy of my boot.ini file which might assist, after editing yours should possibly be the same:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

(note that the final line is just a continuance of the line above, not a line on its own.)

Good luck - please post back with your outcome.

BTW I would simply have edited boot.ini using the good (old fashioned) Edit.com prog run from the Command Prompt but it's possibly better for you to do some reading first.  I don't know your level of expertise.

Ok i opend the Boot.ini file and i got this

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Just wondering what line do i delete? Quote from: XRADEONX on July 28, 2007, 09:53:27 PM

Just wondering what line do i delete?

Change the colored (2) to (1) and delete the entire line I have colored.

Another option - copy/paste my Boot.ini into your system, it's exactly the same as yours is gonna be.

Good luck agenSweet it worked  Thankyou very very very much XD

Now i just need to reformat my C drive.  Is it possible for you to tell me how to do this correctly so i dont do the same thing again.  Sorry for asking for so much.I don't understand why you now want to format your C: partition, that's now the only one with an operating system on it and formatting will wipe every file on the partition.    However, if that's what you want to do, boot from your XP cd and follow the on-screen prompts to format, then re-install XP in the C:\Windows folder.

Well i want to reformat it because there is 12.2 GB on it out of 37.3 GB and i want it to be completely free of everything except for windows XP.  so its just as if i got it out of the box.  And i know that when its done i gota install the Motherboard Drivers and Video Card drivers. Quick question.  I know this may sound stupid but how do i boot from my XP cd? do i just put it in then install it or what?Put the XP cd in the drive and boot the pc.   You may have to reset the bios boot sequence to boot from the cd drive first.

Solve : Strange things in the 'My Computer" folder?

Answer»

There are weird things in the my computer folder...such as:

A folder titled: 0a26efcb04d3c3a42e4a20 and it has a bunch of stuff in it.

A folder titled: 3881664b922031f453 and it has a text document titled "msxml4-KB927978-enu" in it.

A folder titled: f8f7fc5e8d70d7593d and it has a text document titled "msxml6-KB927977-enu-x86" in it.

A folder titled: 혴පcuments and Settings( there is also still a real DOCUMENTS and Settings folder). When you click on it there is a folder titled "Owner" and when you click on that there are two folders titled "Application Data" and "Local Settings" however when you click on EITHER of those there is nothing in them.

What the HECK is all this stuff? It is a simple text log file from one of the Windows Updates for this month....YES the three first folders sounds like leftovers from Windows updates.

The extra documents folder I don't know what is. But if its completely empty I think it's safe to delete it. (Before deleting it, you MIGHT want to make a copy of it in just in case.)

Yes,i want to install XP on a HDD then insert that HDD on another machine?
Advice me whether this is possible.
I'm curious as to why you would want to do this? This has about a 10% chance of being successful....on top of possibly running afoul of MS's liscence agreement. If you took a hard DRIVE out of a PC and put it into an identical machine you would still have Windows activation issues. The Hardware Key uses serial NUMBERS contained in HDD controller chips, RAM chips and the BIOS and Windows would barf at the hardware changes.

Solve : Can I remove all the $ntuninstall#######$ files in my windows dir there are alot?

Please help comp RUNNING slowYes - but those are not the reason for your pc running slow unless you are running out of disk space.   They are uninstallers for MS hotfixes ETC, perhaps you should consider backing them up to cd prior to deleting, you might need to uninstall a hotfix at some time.

Look for another reason for your pc slowing down.

Thank You.
Im trying to find the reason it slowed up on me.
The comp is a dell latitude 1.2ghz w/512 ram and my home comp is a 900mhz
amd runs twice as fast I have spyware and norton but they don't see a problem.
My hard drive is an 18.5g and about 11g used. Any more help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again
RobI hate to ask you this silly question. Have you checked your hard drive for errors and defragged it? I know that doing this has HELPED some of the people I know, with this same poblem.Unfortunately as soon as someone mentions running Norton on a pc which slows then Norton sure gets the blame and not without reason.   Norton is a notoriously bad RESOURCE hog.   For how long have you experienced this slowdown and how long since you did a bit of housekeeping like CCleaner, Defrag etc?

Do you have any un-necessary programs running in the background, things like digital CAMERA software etc which should only be started as & when required.  Have you checked your start-up list lately?

Solve : No Login Screen at boot; Shows only Windows Logo?

Answer»

I really have no idea how this happened.  I was in the process of installing 'Adobe Flash Player' and this is wher I get lost.  After many failed attempts at installing it, I restarted my computer only to get to the login screen, but with some items missing.  The accounts were gone, the little shut down/restart/hibernate button was gone, all to be replaced by the Windows logo.

I boot into my "Back-up" and loaded the hive into the registry to see what was wrong.

On my working Back-up, this is what the 'Winlogon' folder looked like:

On the orginal copy, after I loaded the hive, this is what the 'Winlogon' folder looked like:

If someone could possible HELP me with this issue, I would GREATLY appreciate it. try windows restore. and i haven't heard of upgrading flash player to do this. are you FREE of infection??It wasn't the flash player.  Of that I am for sure.  The problem started when I was trying ot install flash, but no matter how many times I tried, or how hard for hte matter, it woulnd't install.  My cousin suggested that the permisions were incorrect and that he could fix.  I just called him a while ago and explain what happened, he told me that he added a 'Power User' permission with full access.  If my computer were infected, this may be the cause.  Is there a way to replace the 'Winlogon' folder?try windows restore or import your backup registry into the current oneI don't have my restore disc on me, I came up with an idea and i wanted to run it across you before I tried it.  The reason why I am not getting anything at the login screen is because the registry for it is missing.  If I rewrite just hte registries that will allow for login, I could get into the system and import the 'Winlogon' folder from my back-up.  How does that sound? you don't need your restore ccd to do a system restore

look here Haha, I should have went more into depth with my explanation.  I can't get access into the system at all; not even safe mode works.  I believe that the registry entry that controls the start-up at the login screen is missing so it is preventing me from getting past the login screen.

***NOTE that I edited this image to look like what my screen appears like when I try to login.  I took a regular image of a login screen and changed it to look as similar as possible to the situation

***Note that I edited this image to look like what my screen appears like when I try to login.  I took a regular image of a login screen and changed it to look as similar as possible to the situation.ok then the best way would be a repair install*nods* That sounds perfect.  One problem.  Would you please lead me in the correct direction.  I have worked with many problems, but seeing as how this is the first time I have encountered this issue, I would greatly appreciate your help in explaining the process behind a repair install.no problem.. here you go One more question, will it delete any information, or will I just have to reinstall some of the larger porgrams that have registry entries?nope just repairs problems in your OS
Well, that is quite convienant indeed.  I thank you for your fast response and help and will be sure to refer to this site in futer issues.glad i could helpAlright, so now I have encountered a new problem and am in need of your assistance once again.  I went with your advice and began the repair install.  Everything started off fine.  I was asked to insert my 'Network Bus Installation Disc' and I did so.  But, at approximately 29 minutes left, it seems to freeze.

Using this image as an exapmle, there would be a progress bar under the 'Approximately: 29 minyte left' and the little boxes in the corner (Boxed in red) would stop moving completely.  I would be able to move the mouse around freely without any lag, and the on-board speaker still responds wiht a 'Beep' when multiple buttons are pushed a the same time.

I thank you in ADVANCE and hope for a response as soon as possible.

Solve : Windows Explorer startup folder?

Answer»

Is there any way to change the startup FOLDER that Windows EXPLORER points to when it starts up?Yes. You edit the shortcut that starts it, or create a new one. For example, if you are using a shortcut which is in the Start Menu, open the start menu, move the highlight so it is on "Windows Explorer", right click, and select "properties". You will see a text box MARKED "Target". It will probably have %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe in there. You just have to ADD the location where you want Windows Explorer to open, for example

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe D:\

if you wanted Explorer to always open in the D:\ folder.

i uninstalled them and restarted my computer and still have the same problem. i then tried to update driver and it cant find one so i tried to roll back the driver and that doesnt work either. If it's anything newer than Win98SE then drivers are not neccessary...course we don't know that yet. i went in and made sure everything is checked and it is.Are they IDE drives or SATA? If they are IDE, are they both on the same IDE channel? Check that the ribbon cable is firmly plugged into the drives and the motherboard. Also the power connectors.

How old is the motherboard?

Have you recently installed or uninstalled any burning software?

Solve : ''out of range'' message when my pc boots?

Answer»

i used a program called Bios to update my bios, since then when my pc boots there is no boot screen.. just a black blank screen, then an ''out of range'' WARNING shows.. EVENTUALLY the pc boots on into a fully working xp... problem is, i have 2 xp's on this and 2 hard drives.. first should i ever need to reload windows.. i don't anylonger have access to the ''press any key to boot from cd'' message because i have a blank screen when the bios boots.. secondly,  i don't get the choice to pick which xp i WANT to load..  gigabyte made the mb and said to ''try removing the cmos battery'' to reset the bios because the bios program  ..'' Bios" says it has been updated to the most recent version.  however they email message they sent also said i WOULD lose my OS if i did this... now if that is true and i lose XP then if trying what they say will leave me with nothing if it fails to work because if it fails i won't have the option to boot the xp to reinstall xp... but at the same time the email said doing this little trick would not affect anything on my hard drives??
so they have me lost

to the point

if it take the battery out for 2 mins. and that resets the cmos... will i possibly lose what fuctionallity i still have left?? or will it just fix or not fix the bios problem and i'll be fixed or still where i am now with at least xp running until it happens to get messed up and needs to be reinstalled..

any help would be greatly appreciated
Removing the battery for 5 minutes will reset the BIOS t default...
You will not lose your OS on either HDD.
You may have some bootup issues as you have now but you will not lose Windows.

How much did they charge you ? ?i was free email support from gigabyte because the manufactured the mb and THANK YOU! 85% of computers have an out-of-DATE BIOS.

Solve : Mind Boggling Problem.?

Answer»

I've been having a problem with my compy all summer long, and I've tried EVERYTHING I could do on my own and I really REALLY need help.

First off:
Here is the hardware I'm running:

Asus P5N32-SLI Deluxe
Pentium D 950 (3.2 dual core)
GeForce 7900 GT
4x 1 Gb Corsair XMS2-6400
Western Digital 320
OCZ Game X Stream 700W power supply
Windows XP Pro.

Entire System is about 1 year old now.

My problems started around spring of this year.  My computer would randomly lock up during any task be that rendering in Maya or just SITTING idle doing nothing.
I would then have to restart my computer and everything would be fine for a while.

It then started to happen more frequently, about 5 minutes into each startup.
It would eventually go for a long period of time like it should.

I thought it was a hard drive issue because upon restarting and looking in my BIOS my hard drive would not show up in my SATA display. I'd have to turn off the computer and turn off the power supply, wait a couple seconds then turn everything back on and it would be fine.

I bought a new hard drive (WD 320GB.) to fix the problem so I thought.  Same problem.
I call up tech support for ASUS. They have me check my Ram with MemTest.  Test said everything was fine.  They then told me to check the timing of my RAM, I did... everything was fine.  Same Problem.

NEW problem births.  I would startup my computer, it would get to the Win XP loading screen and then restart.  Get back to the Win XP loading screen..... Restart. and it would be this annoying cycle until I turn off the computer.

Asus told me to send in the board.  I send it in.  Waited.. Waited.. and waited. Countless phone calls to their RMA department asking what was going on and when to expect my board or a new board.  Finally after 29 days I get my board back, but it is not my board, it is different.  Mine had a Thermaltake Big Typhoon backplate on the underside of the board that was permanently attached to the board.  This one didn't.  Ohh well hopefully everything was fixed.

Pop it in, PLUG everything in and ERROR.
Bios Checksum error.
Searching for Floppy
Not Found
Searching for CD-ROM
Not Found.

Call up Asus.  They said that the bios crashed and i needed a new Bios chip.  They send it speedily.  I take out the old one, put in the new one.  Clear my CMOS. fire it up.

Nothing.
Black screen.
Everything is on.  Nothing on screen.

Anyone have any ideas at all what in the world is going on?
I'm tired of dealing with ASUS.From what you've posted, I'm assuming the problem is the motherboard, and I can't help much, but I remember having a similar problem a while back, and it turned out to be the CPU that went out.

You wanted an early reply, WELL, it's  NEARLY 8:30 AM here, is that early enough for you? (It is Saturday after all).

There is no command, or indeed any method whatsoever, which will show, purely by inspection of a file, if it has been copied or moved. (When you write "cut pasted" I think you mean "moved".)

I distinguish between "copied" and "moved" as follows:-

If a file is copied, an second identical version is created somewhere else and the first file remains intact.

If a file is moved, an second identical version is created somewhere else and the first file is destroyed.

nency.jariwala, what difference does the OS make?

Dear Nency,

My OS is Win XP Prof...... can i weiw the sysem log files and verify whether i did cut and paste or just copy???  No, there is no log that can show you that.
If you think you did a copy instead of cutting the file, then try and search for the file name. The you can see if you got more than one copy of it.

Solve : XP will not start?

Answer»

My computer is having problems starting XP.  When I turn the computer on, I get the screen that says Microsoft XP, but nothing happens after that; that screen stays on for half an hour and doesn't PHYSICALLY load my information.  After this HAPPENED a few times, a blue screen came up and told me it had done a dump of my physical memory.

I next tried working with the safe mode screen.  When I tried debugging or reverting to the last configuration that worked, the computer went back to the XP screen and still wouldn't load.

When I told the computer to start in safe mode, I would get a black screen that said safe mode in the corners, and the computer would wait at that screen and never load anything further.  If I hit control-alt-delete in safe mode, I could get a LIST of my programs, even after I was told the physical memory had been dumped, but the computer locked up if I tried to load them.

I have no idea how this happened.  The computer has not been connected to the INTERNET for about a month.  I have loaded no new programs recently, and I have done nothing strenuous on the computer.  If you could help me, I would really appreciate.  Scroll down to repair windows x-p .........

Solve : Computer not starting up correctly...?

Answer»

Hey people a family member of mine has a problem.

He ran disk defragmenter this morning for the first time since he got it 3 years ago. He left it on and went out for 5 HOURS. When he came BACK it was only 60% complete, so he left it for another hour, but it had turned itself off.

I've been working with computers for quite some time and have a lot of knowledge and experience so the first thing I thought was that it's just overheated. It was in quite a warm room and had been running at least 6 hours.

He keeps saying it'll turn off before it loads completely no matter what mode he RUNS it in, so I've told him to leave it till TOMORROW and to keep the room well ventilated.

If this doesn't work what could be the problem? It'll stump me lol!

Thanks!Check all the power management settings in Control Panel...

Also dis-able Hibernate as well.

If it hasn't been DONE in 3 years he needs to let it run to completion...

Solve : core system?

Answer»

Hello

I run across a xp tip about keeping core system in memory the instructions to do so are below. I just WANTED to run this by you fine folks before i started messing around in my registry.
Will this help performance any?
thanks
harley

Launch the Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
Session Manager\Memory Management.
Double-click DisablePagingExecutive DWORD value.
Change the value in the Value Data text box from 0 to 1, and click OK.
Close the Registry EditorIt might degrade performance in some instances by increasing the Non-Paged-Area of ram, denying the use of some ram which is not being used at any given TIME, decreasing the size of the Page-Pool.  This could mean that when gaming, for example, much more use would have to be made of the hard drive page file.   I would expect the impact to be greater if total ram was <= 256mb than if it was say 2gb.

Maybe you'd like to do a before-and-after comparison and post the results.

Quote from: Dusty on July 28, 2007, 03:25:38 AM

I would expect the impact to be greater if total ram was <= 256mb than if it was say 2gb.

My researches suggest that there would be an impact, sure, but not a good one. Only users with 256MB+ should use this setting, it is widely stated.

User-mode and kernel-mode drivers and kernel-mode system code are usually written to be either pageable or non-pageable. In cases where drivers or system code is pageable, you can disable the paging executive to keep this pageable code in RAM, but this is only said to be advisable on systems with larger amounts of RAM.

If your system has enough physical memory, performance will increase if the operating system does not page itself to disk. The best way to make sure is to load all of your applications and use the task manager (press Control-Alt-Delete) and click the performance tab. Your physical RAM should be greater than the Peak Commit Charge by at least 16MB.

My system has 1GB and my peak commit charge today so far is 388 MB. I have Firefox, Xnews, Azureus, and 5 small apps like Notepad running. I am going to give it a try.

I've heard that this isn't recommended for anyone with less than 1gb ram. I did use this tweak for some time but stopped because I didn't feel any improvement in performance. When Windows XP was RELEASED in 2001, 256 MB was a common amount of RAM for a well specified system. When it was being written and beta tested, that was a LOT, or at the large side of a normal amount. It is interesting to see how vague and imprecise some web articles can be. When I was Googling for information about this topic, I kept finding remarks suggesting that the tweak should not be done unless the system has a "very large" or even "enormous" amount of RAM installed. Pursuing this topic further, I found that in 2001 or 2002 "enormous" seemed to mean "more than 256 MB".

You would think that web pundits would recall (a) the INFAMOUS 1981 remark "no-one will ever need more that 640K of RAM" attributed to Bill Gates, and (b) Moore's Law, and word their pronouncements accordingly.

Solve : Computer is shutting down...?

Answer»

My computer shuts down by itself after I CLOSE AOL (and with other web browsers as well; this is happening to my aunt too). When it restarts, it says that I have to go back to my 'last working configuration', and then when my computer is back on (shows the desktop) a window pops up saying that my computer RECOVERED from a serious error. I have gone through this whole process about six times now (within the past few days).

I'm worried that it may be a new virus going around, but my virus scanner (AVG Free) can't detect it.

I was told by someone on another web site (who I am thankful to, even if I am wary of taking his/her advice on this) that I should shut off the "automatic reboot" response to a system failure, and that would give me the BLUE Screen of Death (then I was to take that matter to the BSOD section of the forum)--of course I am reluctant to do so.

Are there any other less DRASTIC approaches to this problem?

Thank you for your time!

(Also, if the BSOD is my only option, how does that address my problem?) Turn off automatic reboot and leave it off, getting a BSOD gives you a WAY of finding the problem.
Auto reboot was microsoft's way of hiding their embarrassing BSODs.Alright. Thank you.

I recently had a virus and it is gone now, but I cannot open certain THINGS like System Restore and several other programs and I cannot download from the Web. When I try it asks me "What program to open it with?" And I don't know where to go from there. My virus protection is working and I was able to download another to back it up. I am just lost and need some direction...SistercmayWhat sort of programs are you downloading ........... if its a RAR file your require WIN-ZIP , or win-rar....and it will extract files.......

Tony For instance...I tried to download Adobe 8 and when I get to run it a page comes up with IE, Dell Emage, a whole list of things that are on my computer, but I know I can't open Adobe with any of them. Also the spider solitaire and other games that came with the initial download of files will get the same page that wants to know what to open it with. I can't open Explorer from my TASK bar, but it will open from my start up. System Restore gets the same page...I am totally befuddled.download this its a link to mozilla firefox.....i hope you can download it anyway ..... if you are SUCCESSFUL ....try and download with firefox....its worth a shot

Tony

Check the file EXTENSIONS you are trying to open and then select the appropriate patch to suit. Probably .exe or .com and or .zip.
You will notice the files are all zipped except of course for the .zip patch. It sounds like there are no file extentions on the programs you download

Solve : Computer does not boot up to windows XP.?

Answer»

When starting up the computer, I get the following message:

‘We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change MIGHT have caused this.’ Etc.

When I select the option: ‘Start Windows Normally’, the computer runs fine until when it reaches the window’s loading screen (When you see the window’s logo and the blue loading bar). Then there is a quick sudden flash of my ‘Avast!’ antivirus software doing a ‘Boot-time Scan’ and my computer RESTARTS automatically. The following happens when I select the option: ‘Last Known Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)’ as well.

Even when I select the option: ‘Safe Mode’ or any other options that include safe mode, it does not start up in safe mode. When I do select the safe mode option a bunch of lines of .sys files appear however it stops and says: ‘Press Esc. to cancel  loading SPTD.sys’. That line stays for awhile and then disappears. The screen flickers to a black screen and restarts going back to the ‘We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.’ Screen.

Any suggestions in what to do?

Thank you for your time.

How many programs are you not able to remove via the Add or Remove Programs panel?  Normally, this should not happen and it makes me wonder whether somebody has been tampering with programs files on your hard drive and has, indeed, removed files.

Solve : Accessing System Log in WIndows XP?

Answer»

Is it possible to acess the system log in Windows XP? If so, how do I do it? I recently had my COMPUTER crash for no apperent reason and I would LIKE to find out why. right click on My Computer and select Manage.
In the Computer Management window, click on Event viewer. That will give you a list of categories of event logs.I did that and looked through it, nothing too out of the ordinary. If it is any help to anyone I was running Auran's Trainz Simulator 2006 and iTunes at the time of the crash.Could be just a fluke.
How fast is your computer? You may not have enough horsepower to be running too MUCH stuff at the same time. 2 Pentium 4 Processors 3.2 Ghz each, I've always figured that this would be more than enough to do this. I've done this combo before and nothing has HAPPENED. when's the last time you did a virus and/or spyware SCAN?
You could have picked up something on the internet.....

Solve : Help Me! I'm losing my mind!?

Answer»

I am desperately trying to find an answer. My computer for the past three plus WEEKS has been getting stuck on the windows xp load page ( after you start computer, with the blue bar). It will stay there for hours (record was 24 hours straight). I have rebooted xp already, after a system recovery did not work. I can not figure out why it keeps on doing this. If anyone has any ideas, please, I'm begging you, throw them my way.
Thanks for your time.
Michael OK have you got the original windows x-p DISC , if you have load it in and restart with disc in machine , DO NOT RE-FORMAT , repair windows x-p  and see what happens....

Tony linky dinky Thanks for the suggestions, but when I first rebooted xp, I actually tried to repair it, and that was not an option on my xp cd (at least not that I could find). However, it did allow me to reboot without losing my files...which was good. Even after the XP reboot, it still was having this problem. It usually takes me 1-3 manual shut downs to get the computer started, either in last known good configuration or I can start it in safe mode, then restart.
Any other suggestions? Thanks again for your time.
MichaelOk have you ran any virus checks lately , what protection do you have ...... and how often do you scan for virus's and spyware... well we all know we boot from are hard drives something is STOPPING you from reaching it at a normal time figuring  out what depends on the information you give us  , i have a feeling theres  a error on your hard drive or you have a infection.....also how big is your hard drive you MAY need to do a system defrag......

Tony I have AT&T Yahoo anti-virus, which I just ran yesterday. I run ad-aware and spybot every few days. Yesterday I performed an error-check on the hard-drive, and told it to fix all problems. When I came down it was done, and on the sign-in screen (so I don't know if there were any problems fixed). I defragged about two weeks ago. So....with that info, give me what you got
Thanks again.

i was thinking the same thing, but i checked it and it is saying i have mail in the EMAIL address that is only linked to my outlook and nothing else. i use outlook for my work email and thats the one with the mysterious message that apparently cant be found. You can use TweakUI from Microsoft to do these 2 things (as well as a lot of other handy things)

1. Stop the unread mail count appearing on the login screen
2. Repair the wrong unread mail count
