Solve : Just Formatted?

Answer»

K. Recently, I was having a problem starting my computer because it said a SETUP file was CORRUPTED. I bought some setup discs and tried to fix the folder. It DIDNT work so I decided to just re-format my computer(was going to anyway but wanted to try and back-up my programs. After I made a full formatting, everything looks as though it is going normal until this completely black page with a white '_' blinking in the top-right hand corner comes up. I've waited for about an hour and it hasnt gone away. My computer is a Compaq Presario S-Series desktop that runs on OS Windows XP Home. Please help me. What should I do to fix it? In bios , make sure your hard drive is set-up correctly and it is your only and number 1 booting device , i get that same blinking light on my computer , but it doesn't last for a hour about 1 min then loads x-p , i don't think bios has been configured correctly have you installed your motherboards drivers as well , this could also be causing this issue .....

Tony Where do I see my bios?Ok when you reboot , keep tapping f8 also try f2 as the main bios key it varies... very very fast until you are prompt with a blue screen and you will see a whole load of information , now i suspect your not familiar with this set-up so i will talk to through it the best i can........

Go over to boot .... and check your set to boot from your hard drive.....Now don't touch anything just come back here and tell US what you have seen write it all down.....if you change something by accdent press escape and N . then return ... and the settings will be discarded....

Tony...

I'm SORRY but what am I supposed to check? I am at my Phoenix - Award BIOS CMOS Setup Utility. Underneath the name there are 5 Sections: Main, Advanced, Power, Boot, and Exit. you want to check your boot options...make sure your booting from one single device .... aka your main hard drive......just go through all the boot options and use your commons sense it will come to you ...

May the force be with you

Tony OK. I set the priority Boot have the hard-drive as #1 priority. Is that what I was supposed to do? If not, plz tell me where to look. There are only 2 options in the Boot menu and they are Boot-time Diagnostic Screen and Boot Priorityyes thats correct you had to set it to boot as your main hard drive...

How are things going ....

Tony Not to insult you, but did you reinstall Windows after you formatted?Well... Nothing has changed, unfortunately. Any more advice? I have the CD-Rom and Floppy not being booted at the Priority page thing.Umm... Anodoin, I think I did. At least thats what the whole setup was for. I mean after an hour of waiting and switching discs, I would think it wouldve installed Windows. Would there be a reason it wouldnt?

Solve : ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt, and the keyboard won't work so i can fix it?

Answer»

So I've searched through all of the topics concerning the ntoskrnl.exe file and could not find a solution. I also went to the part of the site that deals with that and still could not find a solution.

I'm running an hp desktop with a AMD Athlon 3800+ processor, 200GB HD with a 500 GB external, 2GB Ram, a Radeon X1950 Pro, and Windows XP Service Pack 2. I had this PROBLEM RECENTLY and thought it was my keyboard (i have always used wireless) so I purchased a new one, and when i plugged it in it did the same thing. I went through the boot from CD steps and got it working again, but just a couple weeks later (today) the same thing happened. I was browsing my music collection when the mouse and keyboard just cut out. I had just plugged in my iPod to update it, but I doubt that has anything to do with it. Now when I go through the boot from CD steps, the computer won't even read the keyboard. What can I do? Thanks in advance here you go look there for hopefully solutionsThanks for replying dude. I ALREADY tried all of those, and since they all require the keyboard to be used to fix the file/boot the last known good setting/all of them haha, I can't use them. Does anybody know what I can do to get my keyboard to communicate with the computer??what KIND of keyboard? oh wait wireless srry try a ps2 oneWhat is a ps2 keyboard? different type of plug in google it
Oh, so just a wired keyboard pretty much right? I tired my old wired keyboard and it still didn't want to read it...I am worried about my poor computer haha.ummm... have anything important on the hdd?I mean, I'd rather not format it cause there is some stuff that I haven't backed up yet, but I guess if that is the only viable solution, I have to do that.hold on... slave the hdd to another computer and backup everything and then reformat. that way the Os will be prefect again lol

Solve : NTLDR compressed?

Answer»

Hello to all and thank you in advance for your time. Here we go 2 weeks ago I was replacing Compuaq Presario AMD 64 2/4 Gg SR1365CL . My motherboard cpu FAN with a new one and the cpu came out with the heatsink bent some pins and after that the motherboard would not work, I am or was using Xp service pk 2. Now I have purchased another motherboard with a p4 3.4 gig cpu and after finally getting passed the system/32 missing/ error and going into the RECOVER system using the dvd recover disk I made years ago I now have a ntldr error and cant get passed it I cannot get an option to go into safe mode or any other mode, really dont want to lose my hdd info, I have a boot disk on the way as all my os info other than the dvd backup is on the Hdd partitioned off what do you computer gurus sugest I do. I would be more than happy to call or have you call me on this matter if it is easier. Thanks again for your time AD you can't just swap motherboard and cpu and expect Windows to work just like it did before. You have GOT what is really a new computer.

You should start again and reinstall Windows.

Or you may get lucky running a repair install...

Repair Install of XP

I suggest reading it through before proceeding and printing it out for a reference...Thank you for your time Patio will try it ....When you replace the motherboard the computers bios does not kinow what hardware you have installed and this can be a PROBLEM. it is a good IDEA to try reinstalling windows and starting again.programming_pat that is not correct. The BIOS main function is to initialize the hardware and startup the OS boot loader. The BIOS doesn't care if you change hardware as long as the bios supports it. The problem here is that Windows can easily get messed up if you do major hardware changes. This has absolutely nothing to do with the BIOS.

Solve : Not being able to uninstall unwanted programmes?

Answer»

Hi, need some advice please. Could be completely wrong as my knowledge is very LIMITED.

I recently gave my girlfriend new anti-virus software to install on her laptop (Intel Celeron, 1.6GHz, 512MB, XP). However, having done so, before able to register it after the reboot, a 'hard disk space is running low' warning is given, and then the moment that you try to do anything the system SHUTS down and reboots.

Easily solved so I thought, however when trying to get into 'add/remove programmes' to uninstall unwanted ones to free up space, as already stated, the whole system just shuts down and reboots. This happens continuously.
I have tried clicking on the warning in order to create space that WAY, however it just isn't able to clear adequate room for the system to function properly.

How can I create enough space on the hard drive if it will not give me enough time or the opportunity by going into 'add/remove progs' to do just that?

I think the main issue may also be that there are now 2 anti-virus progs installed (should have MADE it clear to uninstall the old one before loading the new), but how can I remove the old one if even trying to enter the start menu causes the system to reboot?

The desktop is literally half-full of about 75 shortcut icons(!). Would deleting most, if not all, of these free up enough space to let me get on and uninstall the unwanted progs?

That's the only problem/solution that I can think of at the moment, any advice from you guys would be much appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

removing the icons will help the desktop load faster but they are only around 1 kb or less so you won't get much free space out of them, but you can make a folder and put all of the icons in.

try booting into safe MODE and what two antiviruses are installed??

you only need one running anti-virus anymore can cuase problems like slow computer problems detecting infections etc.

if you can remove the unneed stuff then use this guide to free more space and speed the computer up

hope i could help

Could you give us some more detail of what you are trying to do exactly?
And how are you doing it?Well, lets say I wanted to add the applicaton called calculator to the start menu. Normally I would start/allprograms/accessories , scroll down to highlight calculator, right-click on and and choose pin to start menu. But my computer does nothing when I right-click calculator.

-Does that describe what I am trying to do?

SandySo you MEAN you used to be able to right click calculator in that specific place?I have been using the right-click option of adding programs and much used applications to my start menu for years. It helps keep my desktop relatively clean and makes it easy to start frequently used applications such as calculator and notepad. But also, when I load a program I choose to not put an icon on the desktop. I just find it in program files and right-click it into my start menu. But after I scrubbed and REINSTALLED Windows on this computer it no longer responds to right-clicking on anything in program files. I want to restore this function but don't know how.

Sandyusually windows xp lets you right click on start memnu items and copy cut and paste them. Earlier versions of windows did not allow you to do this and you had to go through the explore program. Try using the explore program as described here:

Try right clicking the start menu, and click "Explore"

Solve : Blank screen at first boot?

Answer»

Just wondering if you could help me with this problem I've been having with my computer for the past two weeks or so.

When I first turn on my computer it will go through its usual DOS rigmarole of loading what it needs to load and then... nothing. The screen is blank. No mouse arrow and the keyboard doesn't do anything.

I can't re-start so I have to literally turn off the computer, turn it on again and, of course, get the message that I did not shut down correctly before and that I have to boot up in Safe Mode.

After going through all the tsuris making sure everything is working OK in the Windows Device Manager
I am finally able to re-start and get a working screen. But then I have to reset my monitor display and re-organize my screen icons.

This, as you can imagine, is very annoying. The past couple of times I just bypass the safe-mode by punching in numero 1, Normal Mode, which happily brings up my properly set windows desktop. But of course this still leaves me with the anxiety of what's happening to prevent me from seeing this screen the first time I boot up.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.what grahpics card are you using is it your onboard motherboard , or a diffrent card...Ok welll if you dont know and your using windows 98 im pretty sure your using your onboard grahpics there , ok ... go to start right click my computer , click manage then device manger , look for display adpaters , expand the + sigh it should come up with your display ...... double click it , have look at the menu you get once double clicked there will be a box in the center saying either this device is working properly or saying the opsite. post back and let me know what its saying. cheers My advice would be unplugging the main power cord that's supplying your PC with electricity for about 10 minutes. After the 10 minutes are over, simply re-plug the cord, and try to reboot your computer.well the adivce given by me is protocol for a faulty grahpics card.....

I think (hope) that I found the correct original CD. It says "AOpen" on top and ver. AO044 at bottom.
By the way, thanks for putting up with me!

Keep in mind if you use that CD you will lose all programs and data on that machine...a factory restore CD wipes the drive and restores everything back to Day One...

You may want to consider a backup strategy first.well i have found the actual site , http://global.aopen.com/download.aspx

You can choose what drivers you need the selection above the link directs you to display drivers but i cnt find that model That sounds like a motherboard CD. What brand of computer is this. The computer was put together for me by a shop that unfortunately is no longer in business, PCMania in New York. I bought the goofy thing in the summer of 2002. I hope that is not too old for a computer.
By the way, I did re-play the AOpen CD before I received the advice from Patio. Fortunately, his predictions did not come to pass. Everything on my computer is exactly as it was before, though I haven't yet turned the thing totally off yet and re-booted.
Hopefully my worries will be soon be a thing of the past. If it isn't, just listen for my screams of woe. And again, thanks to all.Sorry I have to be such a PAIN in the *censored* but I really need to get to the bottom of this. I am having the same problem and I have tried searching throughout the web but I can't seem to find a practical (one that I can understand) solution.
Let me state my problem again:
I turn on my computer, it will go through the usual DOS uploading, and then either nothing or a bunch of vertical colored lines appears on the computer screen. I have to physically turn off the computer, then turn it on again. The computer tells me I should start in Safe Mode, and sometimes I do but other times I don't. Either way a working screen does appear but I always have to re-adjust my screen RESOLUTION and place all my program icons in their proper places. Sometimes in order to stabilize my screen resolution I have to restart my computer.
I thought I had THINGS worked out when I re-ran my driver disc. The computer worked fine for one boot and one boot only. Since then, it's been nothing but the same old same-old.
There is also a message that appears that demands that I choose between two monitors, a default monitor and the monitor that I currently have. But I only have the one monitor!
The computer is around five years old. Is that old? The monitor I bought earlier this year. It's a NEC LCD. The computer itself was made for me by a now defunct computer store; there's no brand name.Disconnect from the mains power, take ESD precautions, put a new battery in it then give it a couple of complete re-boots.
If you need any help with any of the above just ask here, let us know what happens?

Solve : Help, half the page is encrypted.?

Answer»

Last night when I turned off my computer it was find. At 10 a.m. today I turned it on and when I go to a web page half the page is in good font and other is in encrypted font and tiny. Also when I try to open the Microsoft Word page to type a letter it says "Tahoma Font is missing". The other thing that is going on is up in R corner at top where you go to "close" or "MINIMIZE" etc. Those things have been replaced with 3 littles boxes that have a "0" in the (-) little box, a "1" in the maximize box, and an "r" in the "close or x" box.
The fonts are are screwy too .
I have a Windows98-SE on a Hewlett Packard
I have re-booted, started in "Safe Mode", re-loaded Microsoft Word 2000 that I had in there", I don't seem to have anything in "accessibility" -- it's grayed out and when I turned on the computer today it had lost all my passwords which I found strange but it has remembered them later.
Anybody have any ideas. HELP
Thanks

Ceci Go into the control panel and open the Fonts folder. Scroll to the bottom until you get to Times New Roman (True Type) (This is the default font in Word), open this file and view the different font sizes for this type. Is the entire document readable or is some of it encrypted?

I did what you said. And it opens up into a small oblong window and it LOOKS good. But when I open the screen up to "maximize" the first 3 settings are encrypted, and sizes 12, 18, 24 and ok, and the rest of the big letters are encrypted "looking" also (blocky letters not totally together).

Something ELSE that is interesting is when I am off line I noticed the font looks right as when I go to OUTLOOK EXPRESS. But when I go online then the lettering of the font is narrow and different than the lettering on the left that tells me what file folders I have in OUTLOOK EXPRESS (the left side has the font I have always used.)

I still have those new "characters" also up in upper right hand corner that have replaced "x" for close, etc.
It looks liks this:
"0" "1" "r" instead of what used to be there (-) cant remember what was middle ONE and "x" to close the screen.

Do you have any idea what changed those? It's like some setting has changed for only half of the computer and the other half is ok.
Thanks for your reply.

Ceci Quote from: programming_pat on June 24, 2007, 11:04:01 PM

programming_pat

No. It was working good last night when I turned off computer like always. And when I turned it back on about 10 a.m. this morning, it was like this, like it hiccuped or something and unchecked a setting or something. And I can't open the Microsoft Word page to write a letter because it says "Tahoma font" is not there, but when I open OUTLOOK EXPRESS, it's there.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled my Microsoft Word 2000 from the CD
I have started the computer in Safety Mode.
I have tried resetting the fonts but the page of "accessibility" seems to be grayed out and I wondered about that because when I first turned it on today, everywhere I went it wanted a password, even to go to Outlook Express, and it never does that. So the passwords had all been ignored. It's like it's in safe mode almost but I can't get it out.

Thanks for any ideas.

CeciWell, here's an update -- I think I'm delerious from this, LOL

Anyway, it is maybe a "script" problem someone said or a Windows 98 Se problem.

All I know right now is I have discovered that it has 2 TAHOMA fonts in the Font page and it will not let me remove either.

But when I go into Microsoft Word to type on the screen, it says "You don't Tahoma, go find it"

The print I was reading as encrypted is really the font = "Small Fonts" on my list of fonts in my Outlook Express page.

So font problem is what I can ADD to a possible problem. Something is making my fonts not come into my Windows98, I guess??

It most definitely is not defaulting to "Times New Roman" font except in some spots.

And the "r" is still up on the RIGHT upper corner where the little "x" used to be to close the screen.

But some of the odd lettering has disappeared off the internet pages I pull up, but the font still isn't right -- it looks more like, of all things Tahoma font -- go figure.

Thanks

CeciTravel Here for instructions on repairing the Font folder in Win98....

Make sure to back up the registry first. You could copy the fonts from a friends computer and drag them onto yours. The fonts you have might have corrupted. when you copy a font you have to select it and drag it.

Solve : Old hard drive to new hard drive????

Answer»

My computer hard drive crashed and burned and I have a NEW one on the way. My question is this.....can I get ANYTHING off of my old hard drive and put on my new hard drive? I have an external if that helps. Thank you in advance for your help.If your hard drive no longer works, I hate to say that I doubt you'll get anything off of it unless you take it to some professionals and that GETS REALLY expensive. Did you have any backup copies of important files? Sure hope so... sorry to hear it crashed. If its COMPLETELY dead you could try freezing it.That was a really interesting article..... does it actually work? I had a guy here at work who's hard drive crashed I just took it apart to see how it all work. He needed some information from it but I had never heard of this before.... I wish I had then.I've never had a chance to try it myself because my harddrives always crash under warranty. But apparently it has worked for some people. It doesn't fix the drive, but it might give you enough time to get important files of it.Hook it up as a slave drive in a working machine and see if it's seen in Windows Explorer...if so copy and burn the data you need. Quote

My computer hard drive crashed and burned
How do you know it's faulty, did you test it?I talked to Dell and they ran me through some tests and told me I needed a new hard drive. It's under warranty so I don't think they would be pulling my leg since I don't have to pay for it.You could still use the slave method to retrieve your data before you send it in for a replacement...

Solve : How do I get my settings to allow my logins to automatically remember me?

Answer»

I am new to Window xp. When I had windows 98, when I would log in to a site, and CHECK the box that says remember my PASSWORD and login name on this computer, I had no PROBLEMS. I do that now with my windows xp, and it never remembers and I have to retype everything in. I know there has to be a setting somewhere that needs adjusting.
Any HELP?This would more likely be a browser setting...which browser do you use ? ?If you use Internet Explorer, go to Tools, then Internet Options, then click on the Content tab. Under Auto Complete, click Settings.I use my earthlink browserThank you comp guy.....it worked!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, Im so happy now. No problem.

Solve : .dll and runtime errors.....?

Answer»
I'm posting this after MANY hours of trying to fix it myself, and I have a couple of questions for those infinitely more knowledgable than myself-
My computer's been acting funny for a few months now (I use windows xp home edition) , and I know it's a problem with the registry. For one, I keep GETTING an error with certain programs that states "msvcirt.dll" can't be found-and runtime keeps shutting things down randomly. I've scanned with avg, pctools antivirus, and superantispyware-I have nothing-but I'm pretty sure this problem arose after deleting some quarantined boogers I had a while back. Hijackthis doesn't show anything out of the ordinary-I've used it for awhile now but would be happy to post the log if anyone thinks it will help!
I feel like a real tard for having to ask for help on this-but I seriously don't want to screw this up any more than it already is.
So my question is, is there a (somewhat) simple way to go about fixing this?
If I run the system file checker, will that do any good?
Are there any GOOD free registry cleaners out there?
And while I'm at it......
If I ever need to do a clean install, what's the best way to be able to keep all of my other programs/settings, etc? Do I have to use a floppy, or is it possible to BACKUP on cd/dvd format on xp? I downloaded the ntbackup from my Dell disk-but it requires floppy and I'm hesitant to put blind faith into the program as I've never had to use it. I live in BFE and use satellite internet-and if I lose all that programming I won't be able to yell for help until the provider sends someone out to reinstall -they don't GIVE program disks, and it took the pro and hour to set it up manually-so I'd be screwed trying to do it myself. I could get over losing all my other stuff-but I'd die if I lost internet service...."If I run the system file checker, will that do any good? " Yes, that's a good place to start. Have your windoze cd handy.

"Are there any GOOD free registry cleaners out there?" I don't know of any. I have used Registry Mechanic for years with good results and no problems.

Before you do anything, get into the satellite modem and take screen shots of all the settings there and print them out. Satellite is tougher to set up than a DSL modem so you are wise to hesitate to make massive changes before you've documented everything.

Back up all your data to any media as well.

Believe me, you won't "die", just be majorly inconvenienced

ok. get ccleaner (without yahoo toolbar) open it use cleaner, then the issues scan on the left menu and save when prompted to ( i would make a folder somewhere where you will REMEMBER and save the backups there) you might want to run the issues scan a couple times to make sure, remember to save back up each time. then go to start run and enter chkdsk /f ( notice the space between k and /f) and press ok a box will open and ask to run on next reboot enter y and press enter. restart let it run, when you get back to your desktop defrag and see if that HELPS any.

unlovedwarriorheres a linky for ccleaner = http://www.ccleaner.com/I'm tring to teach everyone i help about the power of Google.Common sense cant be taught...... i will try my darnestlol......i see where your coming from, most people don't even understand 99.9% of there answers will be in Google , it all depends on what you type in you cant be to perfect and you cant be to wrong another wise your search will prove to be a waste of time ....hehe I will let ya get on with it chat soon

It DOES have RAM (Random Access Memory); otherwise, it would not run. All computers must have memory in order to run and function. Quote from: patio on July 19, 2007, 08:34:31 PM

Go to your Add/Remove Programs panel and, if Web1000 toolbar is there, remove it. I see you're also using Free Ram Optimizer. I suggest you remove it and see whether you notice a difference; it may be doing more harm than good.

Also, download the Slim version of CCleaner, scan your system with it and delete stuff it finds. Then, defragment your hard drive.

BTW, in your first post, you said:

Solve : Upgrading from XP Home to Pro?

Answer»

Hi,

I am ready to upgrade to Windows XP Pro. The reason I am upgrading is basically because I wanted to install IIS. I downloaded IIS 6.0 the other day before I realized it won't WORK without the Pro. (It can be done by some I've learned).
Should I remove it first, then install Pro, then DOWNLOAD IIS again? Or, is this not important? Any input would be welcome.

D.Do you know how to backup and format your hard drive? If so, that would probably be the best option. If not, then you should just upgrade. And as for redownloading IIS, you could just burn it to a CD, so you wouldn't have to download it again.A "clean install" as Comp Guy is talking about is always the best, but not always convenient. If your installation of XP Home is running fine now, an upgrade isn't a bad idea. Thanks.. I went and purchased an external hard disc drive to back up files. What is this "format your hard drive" you speak of?

D.I was asking if you knew how to erase your hard drive. So, taking all files, folders, and settings out is an erase or better known as formatting?

Yes, when someone says that they FORMATTED or re-formatted their hard drive, that means that they completely ERASED it. Quote from: dotty on July 23, 2007, 10:08:49 PM

So, taking all files, folders, and settings out is an erase or better known as formatting?

Formatting wipes the drive of things you can't erase from within Windows. The only caveat is that it's much more difficult to get the information back.

:' I have an older system, emachine, I tried to install the OS that came with the computer, the setup STOPS and gives me an ERROR unable to retrive "product id of system you are tring to install" The error also tells me that the disc may be damaged. it also gives me this registary entry, RegOpenKeyEx[system\setup\pid]
error2(2)
does anybody understand and maybe be able to help me?

or........

does anybody know I can exit the setup?
When I turn the machine on, it boots, I enter the password, then the machine goes back the setup and the process starts all over again

If anybody has any suggestions please feel free to share your thoughts, I would be gratefull.
sincerly Bernard, what operating system is it? Is the DISK scratched or does it have any other BLEMISHES on either side of the disk? You may NEED to get another cd.
It's also possible that you hard drive is getting old and trying to die.
You could also try installing linux on it and see if it can revive your old pc. Linux can sometimes make hardware work that windows cannot. Go to www.kubuntu.com for more information. This version of linux is very easy to use and install and has a similar interface to windows.

Solve : media player 10.?

Answer»

Hoping somebody can help here. I recently updated from MEDIA player 10 to windows media player 11 and unfortunately found that some of my live video broadcasts, namely live racing were not available. I SPENT a number of days TRYING to correct the matter without result and was eventually informed by the TAB that I would have to go BACK to media player 10 I went to control panel and removed medium player 11 but windows did not automatically give me media player 10, In fact I got nothing. I then went and downloaded a new media player 10 however on four occasions now I have been met with "THIS VERSION OF WINDOWS MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IS INCOMPATTIBLE WITH THIS VERSION OF WINDOWS" I found this strange because I had media player 10 for the 18 months I have had this computer. My computer is a dell gx270 Pentium 4, 2.8, 512mb, 40 gb, XP Pro COPA Sound, 10/100m USB2.0 CD-ROM, SP2, and just recently inserted Nero) Would appreciate any help. Many Thanks.you can try a system restore. Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore
Figure out when you installed WM11 and restore to that point. However, other programs installed after your upgrade might be affected.

Solve : Screen Resolution Issue?

When I Got It, It Did Not Work I REBUILT It And Restored The Systems. It Works Ok Now. Except For The Fact That I Can Not Adjust The Screen Resolution For My Computer I Pretty Sure It Is Supposed To Be On 800x600
But Not Totally Sure. When I Run Some Programs They Won't Completely Fit On The Screen. Same With The Internet It's Really Annoying. It Would Be Greatly APPRECIATED If Anyone Can Help. If I Left Anything Out Let Me Know.
Did you remember to re-install the MBoard drivers from the Dell CD ? ? These should INCLUDE the video drivers as well.I just have to ASK, why are you capitalizing each word? That just makes your post harder to read thebigman103.

Solve : URL's do not work, get Google search in IE70?

Answer»

When clicking on pics or other links, I hardly get always (most of the time I do not) the URL with the pics or info on that asked for-URL.....just the Google search site with lots of other not wanted URL's...

Have XP Pro with all the gadgets, IE70, Sygate, AVG(both antispyware and antivrius), 4200Mhz AMD Athlon, 2048MbRAM, ...guess that's it...

I had IE60 before, but when changing to IE70, this phenomenon sarted really right away... ...and yes I enabled the cookies thing so every cookie will be accepted...I'm not sure I understand your problem. You say that when you click a link or image you get redirected to a Google search instead of the intended image or web site?
Does this happen on all web sites?
And this started to happen when you switched to IE 7?
Could you maybe give an example link or image that sends you to this Google search?
correct!!
No, not on all websites, just the ones with *censored* content(no *censored*...not tried out..) and sometimes popstars sites or russian or chinese sites......and no it did not happen with 6.0 version...but I wanna try out 7.0...I still think it could help if you could post a link that redirects you and the link for the Google search site you end up on. If you could use a non *censored* one that WOULD be great. Okay I checked out the link you PM'd me. And I think you've got a browser hijack.

You should start with downloading SuperAntiSpyware and installing it. Then do a scan with it and let it remove any spyware it finds.
You should also download HijackThis, do a scan with it and post the log it creates here. Then we'll have one of the resident HijackThis experts take a look at it.ok, just did that...lol...system is clean (except for the regular adware tracking cookie...even AVG antispyware finds it every morning, than deletes it and the next day it's back...)according to the spywareguard, but I will post the hijackthis, is standard at my PC and from the looks of it, no specialities...yet...

By the way my AVG Antispyware v.7.5.1 finds more tracking cookies every morning than this Superstuff finds...pity..,,I follow it's SUGGESTION to delete them but sometimes i wonder if i just quarentene them, wouldnt they be stopped in their tracks anyway?

And after deleting the adwarestuff with the "Super", I still have the same problem I described...lol...Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Yeah your log seems to be pretty clean so I have to say that I'm out of ideas atm.
You could try to scan your computer with an online AV scanner and see if it picks up something AVG doesn't.

For your information: I use both AVG's antivirus and antipsyware software...lol...have done this with both when they became available on the Net and I still think they both are the best (except for Ewido, that is...sometimes..lol)and only today AVG and Ewido agree upon these...lol:

Solve : Help! Hard drive is good, but can't get to my files! They are protected!?

Answer» GREETINGS Wise Ones!

I'm SOOO sorry if this is here somewhere, but I can't find it.

I had a HOMELESS family live with me and I gave them access to my computer. I used XP share to prevent anyone from getting into my files. I save all of my files on my desktop and bypassed mydocuments.

My computer broke down. Completey.

The hard drive is good. I can slave it to another computer in the house, but I'm told, "access denied." I can't open, view, move, anything at all!

I can't find anywhere to give my password to get to my files. Does anyone know how to get to my old desktop and files? They have to be on this drive!

Gads! I'm in BIG trouble NEXT week if I can't get to them!

Best!

Solve : msconfig Start Tab HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVer…?

Answer»

I have Windows XP Home EDITION Service Pack 2 (build 2600), a Dell Inc. Dimension 4700. Also have IE6, SP2.

In the Start Tab, in msconfig, there is an item, under the column heading Location, called HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVer…

There is nothing listed under the Colum headings Startup Item and Command. It is not checked, as I unchecked it.

How may I find out what this is?

I highlighted it, pressed CTRL and + key at far right SIDE of keyboard and it should tell me what it is. But it did not, as all it showed was a steady blue line, and at the end of the line the same shows: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVer…

I did a search for it and came up with this: Dumprep is used in conjunction with memory dumps, and is not needed at startup. If you want to disable it, the safest way is by rt-clicking My Computer>Properties>Advanced tab, click the Settings button under the Startup & Recovery section. In the bottom pane under "Write debugging information, click on the down ARROW and select "none".

None is already selected. How may I find out what this is and how to get it out of msconfig, Startup? Thanks much.

The only way to get it out of there would be to delete it from your registry, which I wouldn't really recommend. If it's disabled, it's not affecting your performance. It should not be removed as it is a Windows system process...
Chances are even if you were ABLE to remove it it would resurface the next time you re-booted.

Solve : Internet Explorer Slow - MSN Messenger Won't Connect.?

Answer»

Shew..now that this page has finally loaded, I can explain my problem and hope you wonderful people here can help me.

This has been going on since about Saturday. I can connect with my DSL. I have already called the DSL place and they said everything is fine there. So, I know its not the connection or the servers, but as soon as I connect to the internet I go and click on IE and open it up - it TAKES about 15 mins for a page to load, my pages use to load in 10 seconds. My Windows LIVE Messenger WON'T connect, but If I use the Windows Messneger that comes with the computer(same as MSN) it will. Also, when I go to download something like a messenger or firefox it takes about 6 hours for it to download and then once it gets DONE, it tells me its not a vaild Win32 app.

I have tried unplugging my modem and plugging it back it. I have ran ad-aware and Avast!. I talked to the guy that built my computer(my sister's best friend) and he said it sounded either like a connection problem OR an Explorer problem.

I tried to download HijackThis to see if I could get a log for you all, but it won't let me download anything. Please help. I am desperate for anything.

What VERSION of windows are you using? - - - - - I am using Windows XP Pro
How does your dsl modem connect to your computer? - - - It connects through and ethernet cable.
What version of Internet explorer are you using? - - - - - IE 7.0

Also, something I might add. A couple of months ago, I got this little BLUE star ( I call it the blue star of death) in my taskbar saying that my computer might be at risk. It's from Microsoft. Something about my copy of Windows is not legal - would this be causing my IE to act like this?

Thank you for your time,
Sarah Sounds like spyware... try downloading and running , and see if it finds anything. You can also try downloading and running [url=http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html]SpyBot Search and Destroy.

You could also try re-installing Internet Explorer, but I doubt that is the problem.I will give it a try. I can't download anything, because it takes forever, and then it says it's not a valid Win32 application. But, I will give it a try.

Solve : start up help with "disk boot failure"?

Answer»

ever since i had an internal hd installed IVE been having start up problems where in the start up process i eventually get an error saying "disk boot failure, insert system disk and hit enter." i went to the people that installed the hd but the computer WORKED fine there; and they had no idea what i was talking about. sometimes it gives me the error message and sometimes not. i WOULD have to unplug the new internal hd to get it working again sometimes.

but now, after i tried to put ANOTHER mouse on the comp, the comp froze and now it gives me the same disk boot failure message every time, even when i do unplug the internal hd.

*censored* IS GOING ON!?

thanx for any helpDoes anyone else have access to the computer?
They could be leaving a floppy in the drive from time to time.i appreciate the help fed, but c'mon.... no floppy disk is ever used ... but, the floppy drive does make a "sound" like the comp is trying to boot it or do something with it whne the error message COMES up, so the floppy may be a problemyou can disable floppy seek at boot in the BIOS, but I don't think that would help much. Maybe a bad or POORLY connected hard disk cable could be something to look at. Sure sounds like you have hardware troubles.

Maybe whoever put in your drive plugged the

floppy drive ribbon cable in backwards if they

removed that cable while working on your computer.

Solve : Windows protection error message?

Answer»

I have an older Gateway 2000 desktop with Windows 98 that works just fine, once I get it up and running. However, getting it there is an involved process for no apparent reason. When I turn the computer on, it boots all the way to the Windows logo page, then gives me a DOS message that reads: "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer." So I turn if off, WAIT a few seconds and turn it back on. Windows then says it will start up in safe mode, which I OKAY. After it boots in safe mode, I go to Start > SHUTDOWN > Restart. It then reboots in Windows 98 and everything works normally until I shut down again. If I PUT it in Standby, it comes back and continues to work well; but Shutdown > Shutdown turns it off, which means I face the process described above to get back up and running. Since this is my "alternative" computer (I use a Dell laptop with Windows XP most of the time), I don't feel a lot of URGENCY about this problem. But I would like to have the computer available without the hassle. Thoughts?

Solve : Internet services stop in middle :( / RESOLVED?

Answer»

This comes randomly after starting INTERNET. Sometimes after 2 hours or sometimes even in 15 mins

I have updated Nod32 and no threats were found in through scan. I also have tried re-installing windows xp but ERROR started coming again after 2-3 days of re-installation.

have you contacted your ISP?
i'm sorry but what ISP has to do with this? error comes on my pc nah? if i do reboot then it works fine again! also after this error if i try to open windows firewall, it says it needs to start its service and it fails to start its service! everythign gets ok after reboot but this is irritating i lost my works in progress..[ and sometimes even points in games ]

i didn't see your pic until reading your last post
any solution over this ?If the issue PERSISTS after an XP reinstall then it's likely either the installation media is corrupted, or you have a hardware fault.

Try a different NIC or another port if possible.
Try diagnose your RAM, with MEMTEST86+, let it go through 3 or more runs.

Don't know how much help that is but thats my 2 cents.
well, as for NIC, my LAN connection with ROUTER works fine even if internet is blown.
i'll try different installation media but i dont have much time for it now.

and abt ram, i have ~3yrs old rams. i'll do a test. but never thot this problem will occur coz of faulty RAM! i wud expect BSOD rather.

anyways thanks for replies. i'll do the test in 2 days as i'll get time and i'll reply.

ThanksGo to Start / Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.

Let it run til it finishes and re-boot.
Thanks Patio, I was actually waiting for your reply.
but I did re-installation before reading your reply

anyways, seems like its gone for now.

Thanks

Solve : Win 98 not booting up?

Answer»

When i try to start WINDOWS 98 on my other computer, it flashes to the loading screen then goes back and says:

C:>

How can i get windows to boot normally?
or what are some commands i can type to fix it?
i have tried safe moder and normal mode and both do the same thing. At the prompt type in CD\windows and hit Enter

At C:\windows type win and hit Enter....

You'll need to POST alot more info if this doesn't work...Boot to DOS and try the command scanreg/restore. Choose a date prior to the beginng of the problem.Well, the restore failed.
when the C:> comes i typed it in, and then while it was backing up it said it failed.

"win" did nothing.

Additional info:
the other day it said invalid system disk, so i ran a scandisk CHECK and it 'repaired' it, so i think that is the reason its doing this.
i do not have the windows 98 CD but i do have the diskette (floppy disk).

and more advice knowing the above?Boot with the Win98 floppy and at the A: prompt type in sys C:\ and hit Enter.
Remove the floppy and re-boot.

In the meantime i would DLoad and run the diagnostics from the HDD manuf. site to determine if that drive has failed...HDD manuf.
can you explain how i can run those tests? and the website

P.S.
i tired SYS many times but windows still brings me back to C:>

and the system restore "worked" according to windows, but it didnt work.Whose hard drive is it ? ?
Visit their site for the free tools....once i got the tools how could i run them?

i think the physical hardware is ok, or else scandisk would say its invalid or something right?ReadThis Quote from: brad1011 on July 22, 2007, 09:03:55 AM

Solve : Transfer Win2000 user settings to XP Pro upgrade?

Answer»

Hello,

I have upgraded my windows 2000 to Win XP Pro as a new installation. As it said during the installation that the data is kept and there is an option in the System Programs to transfer the desktop and user settings across, I didnt worry about this. But afterwards I found out that this tool is only useful when transfering the files over to another PC, but not to the same PC as I have done!

But now Windows XP has loaded fresh and my desktop, programs and emails are all gone. I can find the desktop still in the C:\Documents and Settings\... folder and the emails and programs will also still be on the harddisk. Is there a way of knowing where the XP user account names are saved and transfer my Win2000 settings accross?

Or how else can I get my Email account, Programs and desktop back to the same STATE I had it in Windows 2000 before the installation? I thought Windows XP was capable of doing this automatically...... and that it is more user friendly and SECURES data better - at least thats what it said on the installation!

Did you try the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard ? ?Yes I think so..... this is probably what I already described above in the Accessories folder (System Programs)? I have the german version, so I dont know the exact translation.

But when I start that, it gives me the option of selecting either transfer to "Target PC" or "Source PC". But I am not wanting to transfer this information to a 2nd PC, only within my 1 PC.

Is this something different you are talking about that I can download as freeware?

URGENT - Any replies will be appreciated !!Travel Here

See the section on migrating to a fresh install of XP.....good news yes it can be done.
Thanks for your help. When I select the previous W2k setup upon startup, the following error message occurs:

Windows could not start, because the following file is missing or damaged:
\Windows\System32\Config\System

I tried the Recovery Consol (Wiederherstellungs-Konsol) and emergency repair. There was no error message and it seemed to have done it, but the same error message appears as above (no improvement).

So I only seem to be able to start in Windows XP mode. Once in windows, I see all the files i need though in the explorer directory.

Is there a way to deinstall Windows XP Pro, seeing as I had installed it on a second partition (D:)? The windows 2000 directory is still on C:, so maybe once uninstalling WinXP it would work with windows 2000 to be able to get the files ready for transfer?

Are the settings from 2000 compatible with xp?
i heard that the accounts are alot more customizable in 2000, where as in xp, all you get is ADMINISTRATIVE and limited status.Probably not, because after having no success on the repair tool I tried to reinstall windows 2000 fresh but saw that there was a third repair option - but once I did that and got a lot further, it crashed when LOOKING for device components (Bad_Pool_caller).

Anyhow, in the meantime I installed XP properly on another pc. But the "Files and Settings transfer Wizzard" isnt really good at all - it hardly moves anything over except for a few settings. What about all my programs???
Pathetic.... it seems like XP pro isnt able to be installed with all the previous W2k settings. All my programs will be lost and need to be reinstalled! I thought that because it is on the same NT file system, it shouldnt be a problem! (not like Win98 where I can understand that the FAT file system was different)

Only the emails and desktop can be more or less transfered.... what a bugger!Programs always need to be re-installed no matter what OS is involved...it's been this way since Win98.Thanks for having CONFIRMED that and for your time and efforts, patio..... cheers. Cya

Solve : Corrupt or missing file- WinXP?

Answer»

I get the message "Windows can't load- reinstal Windows Root\System32\hal.dll. I can't start up in safe mode. I don't have an OS cd, the computer came with it installed. HELP?We'll NEED some more INFORMATION. What OS do you have? What are your computer specs? Thanks! The OP's OS is in the Title, "WinXP" = Windows XP.What is the last thing you see on the screen while trying to start in SafeMode?

Safemode can take up to 5 minutes to load. How long did you wait? It's XP Home. I got as far as choosing which type of safe mode and the OS. Then it goes back to the error message.Go to a friend's house that's running the same version of XP and copy it to a disk (or cd). Then look around online for WIndows boot disks that support writing onto NTFS. USE the boot disk, then copy that file back onto your computer. (If you need more specific help, message me.)This is a website I have come to trust for DLL files that have gone awry on my system:
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/pop.php?hal

Just click the Download link

Ignore all the free registry scan stuff.

Figure out a way to copy it to your computer, and put it under:
C:\Windows\System32\
Meanwhile...Which files would I put on the cd? Thank you all for your help. You need to borrow an XP CD to do this...simply COPYING one has been known not to work.
Make sure it is the same version as you have and if SP2 is installed it must be on the CD you are using otherwise you will have problems.
You may need to re-activate Windows as well.

Solve : Need help with correcting 'System Config Utility' changes....?

Answer»

In 'System CONFIGURATION UTILITY', I changed from 'Normal' mode to 'Selective Start up mode'. System started well in selective mode.

Later on, I wanted to take it back to 'Normal' mode, whenever I come back to this utility, check the appropripate box and follow to 'Restart' as per the MESSAGES, everytime after 'Restart' system goes back to 'Selective mode'

How can I take it back to 'Normal' mode. Because of 'selective' mode, system is NOT recongizing my CD/DVD DRIVES and I am therefore unable to boot it with original XP CD too. Many other functions are also not working.

Any suggestions to help me out with this situation are most welcome?
Did anyone land in similar problems.Try selecting normal startup mode, then click 'apply' followed by 'OK'.
Then go and do a normal shutdown and bootup.

Solve : HIGH memory usage!?

Answer»

My computer has been acting VERY strange. I reformatted 2 days AGO and put in a fresh installation of Windows XP Home LEGIT and updated all the drivers. Since the time I installed windows until now it has been slow as a mule and freezes for 10 seconds at a time, randomly. Even when it's just sitting there. First thought was spyware or virus, but I ran scans with all the good anti-everything and came up with nothing. I've rebooted MULTIPLE TIMES. Take a look at this screen I took, explorer.exe has been rising rapidly in mem usage and i dont understand. it does it just sitting there with no programs open. It's been up to 1,000,000 K+ of VM if it sits there long enough. It can't be a virus because it happend as soon as i installed windows and wasnt connected to internet at the time. I really would NOT like to reinstall again UNLESS it is my last option. My computer used to be FAST as lightening before reformat, so idk, drivers are updated and everything, sigh

Does it act like this in Safe Mode as well?
Have you installed SP2 yet?
Have you tried defragmenting?
And, just out of curiosity, what protection do you have installed?Adding to CBMatt's help. Microsoft has a malicious software removal
tool. See the link below.

Solve : Weird buzzing noises coming from pc?

Answer»

Hi-

As usual, the week my pc goes out of warranty, something happens!

A few times during the use of my pc, I get some kind of electronic "buzzing" noises.
They remind me of some kind of s.o.s. noises. They are coming from the pc itself, not the speakers.

The pc is clean, and I have checked for loose wires and all that, and found nothing.
Ive even run all the "cleaning" programs I have, and still, it makes the noises.

It even makes these noises when turned off. Ive gotten woken up in the middle of the night with this buzzing sound.

It doesnt make the noise all the time, just a few times EVERY now and then.

Any ideas what it is, or what it could be?

My pc is a Compaq Presario, 3200, 512mb, 80gb with AMD processor.

Thanks,
KennethDid you try unplugging the computer?

(Leave it unplugged, and see if it makes these noises)

Possible solutions/causes:
BIOS data is not turning off something...
Bad PSU

Until this issue is resolved, I dont recommend you leave your computer plugged in when you leave your home (just as a precaution, since it could be a serious issue that is causing it to do this while it is off)

Are you sure its not the monitor or a printer? What do "s.o.s. noises" sound like?

Personally I always switch off my PC at the wall when I go to bed or leave the house for a few days. British wall outlets often have switches. (My household fire insurance stipulates that I do this).

I suspect the PSU. Look INSIDE the CASE when the noise is occurring and see if there is any physical movement. Not to sound too stupid here....but whats a PSU?

And I have unplugged the pc for a day before, and it still made the noise.
I will START unplugging it when I go to work now.

The noises are coming from the front bottom area of the pc, but I cant find out exactly where they are coming from, because they are so random, by the time I get to the pc, the noise has stopped.

Thanks for the info.A PSU is a Power Supply Unit
( See one here: http://www.dansdata.com/images/sfpsu/psu500.jpg )

Are you saying that the noise still occurred while the computer was unplugged?

If it is, then I hate to make you sound crazy: But its something else thats making that noise. A Desktop computers hardly has enough power when unplugged to make even a beep. It can only keep the contents of the CMOS.

Could you open the computer, and take a look at what is in the front bottom of the PC?
Perhaps a fan is causing the noise? I asked before, what are S.O.S. noises (whatever they are!) supposed to sound like? We have not seen a proper description of these sounds. Are they loud or quiet? Do they sound like a bee? Do they sound like voices? Do they sound like music? Do they sound like MORSE code? Are they beeps?

If it still does it when the computer is unplugged and moved to another position, maybe there's an ants wasp's nest inside?

I can think of some explanations...

if the sounds come when the PC is unplugged then the first two are possible I guess

insects
mice
case vibration from other equipment
computer owner is crazy
radio pickup
evil spirits

Quote

I'd be looking for bugs or a mouse, there's not much noise a computer can make when it's unplugged.

Solve : Win98 media player is missing?

Answer»

i have OS win 98E and its media player is missing where to find it ?
i don't have CD ROM or high speed to DOWNLOAD a new version of it now can anyone tell me how to bring back my old media player Navigate to My Computer --> Local Disk C --> PROGRAM Files
and look for a folder called something along the lines of Windows Media Player.
Can you find the folder?Yes, do as Carbon asks, then:
If you can find the folder open it and look for the executable. Not sure what it is called in your version though you'll probably know.
Right-click it and click , 'send to > desktop (as shortcut)'. If thats not an option in 98 then just create shortcut and move to appropriate location.

If you can't find the the folder / file please tell us what version you have had and we will locate a download for you - if there is no other alternative. (You could download it to a flash drive or something on another computer if you feel dial-up is too slow).

P.S. Can you recall what may have happened before you lost your shortcuts? ie A PC or Registry Cleaner? Other person on your computer? Installation? Uninstallation? Update?thank you for your replies..!!!
Oh i have already check c:/programs file/ there is not any folder called windows media player
i'm Intermediate using OS XP and i like to use 98 too i don't want to reinstall it i want to use this now is there any way to get back my old Media player ?
thanksOk, check 'Control Panel > Add or Remove programs', or whatever it is called in 98. Is it there?

If not; something has caused it to be deleted or get uninstalled, therefore you cannot just 'get back' your media player you must install it again.

You could also try searching your hard drive for "WMP" or "Windows Media" or "Media Player", try "Media" or "Player" by themselves if you're not getting anywhere. Some of them should get some hits if indeed there is a trace of the program still.

You didn't answer my question about what you think may have caused it.Ok yesterday my friend were PLAYING song i asked him if he uninstalled or delete it but he said i didnt do anything

Yes i check everywhere i couldn't find it, i checked control panel already there isn't

Can i get it by restoring the system ?
to restore i have to GO to MSDOS and i forgot the command of restoring
98 if you remember it can you tell me ?
thank you I still think it would be best to obtain a copy of the installer.

If by 'command or restoring' you mean

Code: [Select]sfc /scannow
Though, I don't think that will fix your problem at all.
Seeing as you are severely restricting your options the only alternative would be to reinstall. I don't see the POINT in taking such drastic measures though...THank you so much buddy i got it back by restoring
i've just restored that and my media player is apearing

GOD Bless you I'm glad that your problem is resolved!

May I ask what you did exactly? Did 'sfc /scannow' work, I don't think I've ever really used WIN98 at all, but I'm surprised if that worked. No the command you gave me it didn't work but i found something
take a look at this

it helped me very good and i get it back thank you so much

Solve : Explorer Right-Click Menu Default?

Answer» HELP! When I right-click on a file in Explorer... the default has changed to Search rather than Open. How do I change or reset it to Open?!? Thanks You mean when you right click, you no longer see "Open With..." on the popup menu?

What operating system are you using? Normally, when you double-click on a file it opens with the associated program. Now when I double-click it opens Search. When I right-click on a file the default menu option at the top is Search rather than Open. I'm using XP Home EDITION. ThanksGo to Start/Run and type in regedit...

Travel to the FOLLOWING key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell

Double click on the default value and make sure it is set to none.

Re-boot and you should be good to GO...

As always when editing the registry always make a backup first.Great! Thanks! I'll GIVE it a shot and post the results. Thanks again! That did it!!! I've been trying to figure this out for months. Have no idea what caused it to change to begin with. Thanks again. You're more than Welcome...stop by anytime.

Call the fire department. Well, I have to say that the OP's username really matches his problem...

But anyways... have you scanned your computer lately? Try getting Windows Media Player 11 (if it's compatible with W98)Did you uninstall / defragment / reinstall...or just reinstalll?

PERHAPS his first name is Richard, or an abbreviation thereof...

Judging by the other issues you have mentioned i think nothing short of a repair of Win98 will get you out of this...
Post back if you need help...there are methods where you won't lose your data...So where does the issue of your computer catching on fire come in? Was it just to get extra special attention...

Anyways:

Go to Start>Control Panel
Double-click "Add/Remove Programs"
Click the "Windows Components" tab
Find the Windows Media Player (Under Multimedia, I think), de-select it, click Apply, and wait, restart your computer, and install it again.

What exactly did you remove?
Removing Windows Media Player ONLY should not affect your volume settings. Unless you removed the Volume Control. Go back to Windows Components, and install all the Multimedia stuff. Quote from: Dark Blade on July 15, 2007, 06:51:02 PM

Actually, the highest you can go on any Windows OS before XP is WMP9.To reinstall Win98 without losing your data and programs you need to rename the win.com file located in the root of C: to win.old and then boot with the Win98 CD and install normally...
This method is not completely foolproof but i've done it successfully many times...if you have data you absolutely need then back it up first.Patio::
I did what you said and things are alot better.
However I am still experiencing a few problems::

1.
First of all a black screen ALWAYS comes up and lists these error codes:
"vnetsup.vxd"
"vredir.vxd"
"dfs.vxd"
I press enter to get through them , then windows opens...

2.
A message window appears with this message::
"Cannot find the specified file. Some or all of the following feature is missing:
Microsoft Network"
I click out of that...

3.
Another message window appears:
"there is a problem with DISPLAY settings. the current adapter type is incorrect
or current settings do not work with your hardware"
(and the display is in low resolution and color by the way, this whole time.)
Next:
        -I go to display.
        -I try to change it to 256 colors, and 1024 x 768
-It wont let me but makes me reboot.
-I repeat 1, 2 and 3 again but this time it lets me
      change to 256 and 1024 X 768
        - Then I have to restart AGAIN and I go through 1 and 2 again
After all of this I can then go about browsing the web, etc.

What the *censored* i s wrong with this thing?
I updated windows 98 after I did what u said.
I do have 2 yellow exclamations under device manager:
           1. PCI Comunication Device
           2. PCI Mass Storage Controller
I also reinstalled my audio and graphics driver with no problems.

*I still cant get Windows Media Player to work. And I cant uninstall it then reinstall BECAUSE It isnt listed under add/remove OR multimedia(it isnt seperate).
* I installed IE6 but I am still having problems with some websites. Most importantly to me: my GMAIL account. The inbox area is blank and I have to go to a HTML version of the site to view my mail...

Could someone please give me some advice on some or all of these issues. Like, step by step what I can do to make all this stop???Sounds to me like you have the wrong video drivers installed...DLoad and run AIDA32 and REPORT back what video device you have.i have
   nVIDIA RIVA TNT2
I looked under the driver properties and it lists driver files from in the windows folder:
      C:\WINDOWS.000\SYSTEM\NVDISP.DRV
             C:\WINDOWS.000\SYSTEM\NVMINI.VXD
                     C:\WINDOWS.000\SYSTEM\vmm32.vxd (vdd.vxd)

I Downloaded driver file called "TNTW9XE.exe" and I tried to apply that as the driver but it didnt work...Is that driver from the manuf. site ? ?
You may need to un-install the old one first.

Solve : Scandisk/formatting?

Answer»

I hope I have the right forum for this.... I apologize in advance if I don't!

I just have a general question. I've had this computer for over 2 years now, and I've never ran a scandisk nor have I FORMATTED (I think that's the right word...) the harddrive. Is this a really vital thing? If I don't do it, will my computer's life be shortened? I've noticed lately it's been running a little slow than usual when it starts up (but I know there are no viruses or spyware on it that is causing this).

Perhaps it's just the computer's age showing, or do you think I should run the things I mentioned above?

Thanks in advance.I don't think it's NECESSARY to format your hard drive. Although it might freshen it up a bit and make it a tiny bit faster, you will have to reinstall everything and copy everything.
Formatting basically cleans your HD (DELETING everything including your OS)

If you want to make your computer faster, you could try defragmenting it but I wouldn't RECOMMEND formatting it.Doing a scandisk wouldn't hurt EITHER but there's no reason to do a format if your computer is functioning fine.Oh! Defragmenting is the word I was looking for!

Do you guys think it's quite neccessary to defragment? Is it a neccessity?

Thank you for the responses! Well it's not like your computer will break if you don't defrag. But by doing it you can reduce load times so the computer will feel more responsive. You can just set your computer to defrag over night or at some other time when you don't use it.

Solve : help!“Services and Controller app has encountered a problem and needs to close"?

Answer»

“Services and Controller app has encountered a problem and needs to close”.

I continually get this error over and over again after about five minutes of being logged into my computer. After this error box pops up and I close it another box pops up and gives me one minute before the system restarts.

The Error report says:
szAppName : services.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.2180 szModName : unknown
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00955592

Stored in the files:
C:\DOCUME~1\Jacko\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERc2d6.dir00\services.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Jacko\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERc2d6.dir00\appcompat.txt

I have checked with two anti virus programs and have removed what I think is most of virus’s and any spyware that is on my system. That has led me to believe that it is not a virus which is causing the problem but something different entirely. Also the error started happening after I used “Disk Cleaner” to delete all my temporary files, and (I know really stupid of me) deleted some large programs that I thought useless such as KasperSky Trial that had run out by just right clicking and deleting the file. I believe that I may have accidently corrupted my system files or something somehow.

Here is my Hijack this report (Yes I know THERES still probably some Spyware/Virus programs still present but I highly doubt that it is what is causing the problem):

Any help at all on this matter will be greatly appreciated.
Just read "Read this first"

So I should tell you I'm using Windows XP
With a Dell dimension 4550
With 1.25gb of Ram
With an Intel Pentium 4 Processor 2.00GHzTry opening a command prompt and type:

Code: [Select]SFC /scannow
You will need access to some form of the original data files, like an installation disk for XP.

I don't know much about looking at HJT logs, though hopefully someone such as CBMatt will stumble upon this thread and take a look for you.Just did the scan you suggested, and it finished but gave no report or anything once it did. So I don't know if I'm missing any files or not.but how's your computer running now? and did you do the hijackthis in safe mode? because it works better in normal mode.

try these online scanners in the mean time

house call
edwido online Well I guess that scan thing did it
It hasn't reset itself in about a day. It looks like its fixed. Thanks so much for the help guys much appreciated.Nope it went away for a few hours then CAME back
Used the House call. Came up with a few virus's and said i had all these outdated files or something.

Yes i used HJT in safe mode because at the time i couldn't stay on my comp for more then 5 minutes, i have since discovered a command that can abort the shutdown process "shutdown -a" but it makes my computer unable to open some programs and become "non responsive"ok look at my signature get any programs you don't have and up date them reboot in safe mode and scan remove anything they find

Solve : Excel function help?

Answer»

What is the excel function that allows me to sum cells EVEN if there is a non-number value in one of the cells? i want to sum a group of cells and some cells don't have a number, rather they have just a dash "-" in them. i used to remember that function to do that but alas, i have forgotten. any help?? thanks. What version of Excel are you using? With my Excel 2003, the SUM function automatically ignores cells with non-number content and just adds the cells with numbers.i'm using excel 2003 ALSO. darn. i THINK it has something to do with the datafeed i'm pulling from (reuters financials) i'll call them to figure how to eliminate the "__" from downloads.

Solve : Reformatting help??

Answer»

Ok, I have only reformatted my comp a few times, and happen to run into PROBLEMS each time doing so, and this is the latest one. Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Ok, after pressing F6 after boot, (asking me if I want to install 3rd party drivers or whatever) I come to this screen

http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/9758/0000041ve7.jpg

I press S, and come to this screen
http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/2425/0000043bt0.jpg

I hit enter, and choose to install this driver, and come to this screen

http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/3232/0000045sn6.jpg

I hit enter, to set up windows XP, and come to this screen
http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/9475/0000046vj6.jpg

Bla bla... Yeah I agree...

At first, I deleted the PARTITIONED space (my old windows), and proceeded to install, but an error occured, and I had to restart. I hit enter, because nothing happens when I press C, and it wont delete the partition that appears to not be there.. After hitting enter, this screen comes up.

http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/4599/0000047vd9.jpg

So I hit enter... And this comes up.

http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/5692/0000048ob4.jpg

*censored*?

After hitting enter to continue.. The dreaded "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent further damage" Screen pops up.

I have NO idea what to do in order to continue the formatting.. Please.. I need this computer for work.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm assuming he wants to install his system on a RAID.

Have you always ran your system like this and are just now coming across this error, or has there been a hardward change?what motherboard do you have ?
Are you using a special media or gaming keyboard when attempting this operation?

I have had similar "snags"..... Yes, I am installing it on a RAID.

No special keyboard...

And I think this has something to do with my motherboard? "VIA SATA RAID 0 SCSI Disk Devise " Sorry guys. I'm not very computer savvy.

And this is the forum that I got through with last time I reformatted.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help in advance guys and gals.this is now quite interesting (looked at all your link-pics) as I am having the same problems at home.
did you (like I.. switch the sata cable from the original hard drive that had the os on it to the other drive ?
did you get any error messages like missing the txtsetup.oem < file or missing NTLDR <

i cannot get my F6 button to be recognized on mutiple keyboards but the raid controller drivers are in the system for some strange reason ? I possibly am going to just get one hd up and installed this evening, if I happen to figure out our problem before hand , I'll post back* I feel your pain

Solve : In device manager there is nothing!!!!?

Answer»

HI
Thie is very strange problem. When I restart my computer the network is missing. So, I check device manager.I am socked there is nothing in the it.It is blank. So, I put my old HDD & start the net.

Can anyone help me.

I download some Pc cleaner. But don't like it.So remove it.After this the problem occur.

HDD: 80GB seagate sata
OS: win xp 64 bit sp2Sounds like your registry has BECOME corrupted, this PC Cleaner LIKELY caused it. You should use CCleaner, as that will not cause a problem like this. (Possibly it was a 32bit app being used on your 64BIT OS?)

If that is what caused the problem I don't have a fix RIGHT now but I'm sure someone is on to it.If you're using XP do a system restore to a date earlier than when the problem occured.

Alan <>< thak you for your reply. But its to late. So, FINALLY I fromate the disk & install os again.Sorry but i have no time.Great Day In The Morning Nency-Jariwala! System Restore would have work,

They've already 'fixed' the problem, if you read their posts you would have realized this.
