Solve : 2 Copies of Windows...help with removal of old...?

Answer»

Hey there. I am running XP and about three days after GETTING it i got a fun virus...kept giving me an add for virus program in the system tray. Well, I am not excessively computer savy but i know a little and feel comfortable. I thought i reformatted/reinstalled Windows, using my boot disk that came with the PC.

When it restarted I got the screen about selecting which operating system to use. The old windows folder is still there and i can run the other windows still with the virus in it. That means it is still somewhere in the computer and I want to get rid of it.

How can I get rid of that copy of windows, and all of the files that go with it? Do i have to try to format and re-install again? or is there a way to save what I have already put on this new copy of XP I have been working with for the past two MONTHS?

Thank you in advance...

I am running XP Pro on a Systemax BTO Computer with Dual 3.2 GHZ and 2.5G RAMRe-install Windows, try and throw both of the Windows copies of your PC.You should be able to format the bad partition with the OS discs. QUOTE from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 10, 2007, 09:46:35 PM

You should be able to format the bad partition with the OS discs.

He has more than one install of XP...this doesn't neccessarily mean they are on different partitions. In fact if there are 2 Windows folders they are on the same partition.

Personally i would wipe the drive and start fresh...after backing up the data you want to save. This method will cause the least amount of headaches...you could allways remove the old one through the msconfig boot ini WINDOW?
start/run/msconfig//
at the top of the window that opens click on the boot ini tab
click on check all boot paths which will give you the option of which version to remove.
I aint a wiz with pc's but I had this very same problem and was given this solution. hope this helpsThat only removes the boot option not the Windows install...

Solve : high contrast messed up webpages?

Answer»

my brother was messing with the laptop, thinking he could do whatever he wanted to it. I turn it on the other day and i see that he sets it on high contrast #2, which almost completely messes up webpages (images are unaligned, colors are whacked up, links don't look how they usually do.) I try to change it in the Appearance tab in Display, but the webpages are still messed up, so i do a SYSTEM restore and everything is back to normal...

Today I found out he did the same stuff once again and now system restore won't WORK. I tried messing with other things, like the Performance thing in System Properties, but it doesn't seem to fix it at all. Does anybody else have suggestions on what i should do?what WINDOWS and what make of laptopExactly what is "high contrast #2"?

I think having separate user accounts for you and your brother would be a good idea. That way, you can each set certain preferences for your account. Agreed.

And since he shows no respect for your equipment i'd certainly lock down his Administrator priveledges so he can't make harmful changes... Quote from: soybean on July 12, 2007, 08:02:36 AM

1) "High Contrast #2" is an appearance setting in display properties.

2) Already done. I didn't think of it until I realized my account was unaffected so I deleted the old one and created a new one. Thanks for the help, tho Quote from: alexfue12 on July 13, 2007, 11:46:22 AM

Exactly where? I don't see it in my Win XP Pro SP2 system, and Google isn't yielding anything directly related. Have you modified your system someway to have this option?you find it under control panel --> accessibility OPTIONS --> display --> settings. In the drop down menu there's a whole bunch of different contrast schemes.Oh, it's in accessibility options. I see it. Thanks.

hey....

how to disable your windows by deleting some files....

my way is just finding the location of the installation of the recovery program then delete and if it it from the motherboard will uninstalling the driver will do???

Yeah, I'm quite interested to see where that folder is located They are HIDDEN somewhere......
..... In places most obvious but hard to retrieve.....
..... If deleted, will cause massive damage......
..... You will get what i'm talking about if you know where they are yourself.......
...... That information, my friend, is something we will not say.............Seriously?
I thought the BIOS copied itself to the RAM, from ROM chips/flash memory, after it done what it has to do at boot up. I'm talking about crucial system files. there's always a ''hard copy'' of the crucial files, that will be hidden. Quote from: SHENGTON on July 11, 2007, 09:22:23 AM

help
Firstly, you spelt the topic name incorrectly...
Secondly, there is no such thing as a 'bios program' that powers and restores an operating system.
Thirdly, you will not find anything regarding deleting the BIOS in a directory on your hard drive.
Fourthly, your Windows installation and hard drive are exactly the same thing. (ie the installation is on that drive).
Fifthly, the BIOS is, in a way is 'installed' on the motherboard but you cannot generally access its data from an OS (in some cases you can). It can only be modified/updated from the BIOS itself.
Sixthly, you have bad grammar, appear unable to spell correctly, and do not punctuate.
Seventhly, no one on here will attempt to help you in your futile attempt to cause malicious damage.
Eighthly, what is this 'Recovery Program' of which you speak?
Ninethly, I don't understand your last SENTENCE though what driver would you attempt to uninstall?

see now isn't that just going to be confusing for the poor fella? after all, his conversational skills aren't the greatest as you said.
but, if i understand the current situation correctly, the ''recovery program'' which was mentioned is the same one as the '' 'bios program' that powers and restores an operating system.'' and doesn't exist.
meaning, there's no point asking about something which you don't believe exists in the first place.
no good can come out of replying to this anyway, so it's probably better to let it die or let people flame each other long enough for a moderator to notice and lock it, as happened with gamerx365's threads.Ohhh... I see, why is he calling it a recovery program I didn't understand.

Solve : can't do a repair install?

Answer»

ok I got my cousins old dell inspiron 3800 and for some reason it goes to the boot menu. and no matter which option it pops up with a error its blue but i can't read it, its only up for a second. I tried to do a repair install from here but when i press "R" nothing HAPPENS and i don't know how to use the recovery console ( i know noob). So any ideas guys? no rush on the return tomorrow Ill see if there is any important information on the computer, if not Ill just DUMP and reinstall.

unlovedwarriorHave you tried SafeMode yet? If that doesn't work then I'd save the data & reformat.

Alan <>< i tried all of them and i can't get to the data because it restart right before xp finishes LOADING I would think your options are fading, open the case and check that every thing is connected and clean out any dust bunnies from fans etc. make sure the ram is firmly seated in the slots

you could install onto another master hard DRIVE then rescue any data after you install the old drive as a slave drive. If there is nothing you want from the drive, then down load SwissKnife reformat or let XP format the drive and do a full install. then goto the Dell web site and download the drivers for that particular MODEL and then install them.
web site, troubleshooting, drivers, technical reports, manuals etc

Repair Install of XP

This is by far the best set of instructions i have used.

I suggest reading through at least once to become familiar with the steps and then printing out a reference copy before starting.

Good Luck.i didnt go to the recovery console.. ill try that and get back to you

Solve : Simple CD Bootdisk?

Answer»

In this NEW era of computing I have noticed a trend towards foregoing floppy diskdrives due to there SPACE inefficiency and what not. I understand they are dinosaurs, but I loved being ABLE to pop in a simple disk with all my fdisk/dos utilities for bootups at one click of the disk. I was wondering if someone had a simple bootdisk or windows98 bootdisk in a cd rom format that I COULD easily use to help recover my fallen system (obviously a cdrom driver would be needed in this scenario).

Mainly just need all the basics for booting a formatted machine up: autoexec etc. Hopefully I can find a usable substitute for the tried and true floppy diskette.

ThanksYou know, if you want to recover your files from a broken Operating System, you can try a portable Linux. If your interested --> http://www.pendrivelinux.com/

As for you original question, are you trying to repair your OS? or do you just want to recover the data?I use The Ultimate Boot CD....

Oh Boy, please don't laugh..Vents? Where would they be? ThanksThe back and sides of your laptop have open vents to let heat escape...if they are blocked with dust, this could cause the laptop to overheat and shut down. Also, the bottom of the laptop may also have vents for the exhaust fan.Run a memory test also. ONE of the memory modules might be bad. My computer has had that trouble before and one of my memory modules was bad. I'd try that if cleaning the vents doesn't work.

Solve : Uncollapsed folders...Help.?

Answer»

When I right click on the "Start" button, and then go to "Explore", I see many folders that are already open. So many, in fact, that I can only see the last "er" in the words "My Computer". I would like, when I open Explore, to see only the following folders: Desktop, My Documents, My Network Places, and Recycle Bin.

I don't want to see any sub-folders, or subfolders of subfolders.
And when I open one of the four folders I mentioned, I only want to see the subfolders (and files) directly beneath the folder I click on, not sub-folders of the sub-folders.

I basically want to be in charge of which folders are open, rather than my computer automatically deciding which sub-folders I want to go to right off the bat.

Can anyone help please?

kc

[Saving disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]If you move the mouse CURSOR over the line that seperates the left and right panes til it TURNS to a 4 sided arrow you can re-SIZE the pane on the left so everything is viewable. Thanks for replying. I guess I want my cake and eat it, too. I Tried your idea, and it works, however, I was hoping that only the minimum number of folders would show. I don't mind not being able to see the right hand side of the names of some of the longer titled sub-folders as I open the main folders. I like the left window small, so I don't want to increase it's size. The main thing, though, is that I don't want the folders to be uncollapsed when I open up Explore.

Do you or anyone else have any more ideas?

kcCreate a second shortcut to Explorer on your desktop as we are going to edit this one for test purposes...

After creating it right click the shortcut and select Properties.

Under Target copy and paste the following :
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e, C:\

Then copy and paste the following into the Start In line :
%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%C:\%

This will open Explorer at the root of C: and also show all folders in the left pane as collapsed...
If this is what you are after simply delete your other Windows Explorer shortcut.I tried to make a shortcut to "Explore" by (1) right-clicking on the Start button, (2) left-click and hold the "Explore" button, and (3) drag it to the desktop and release.

It did not APPEAR on the desktop. Is there another way to get a shortcut of it?

kcLocate the file at c:\windows\explorer.exe
Right click the file and select send to/desktop as shortcut

Solve : Desktop wallpaper?

Answer»

This may seem a simple or silly problem. I have Windows XP Professional
on my work laptop. MY wallpaper loads fine when I log on, however when
the desktop icons appear, the wallpaper goes away, sometimes with a peculiar short whining noise, like a "vvvviiiiip!. Have asked the IT PROS at work. One asked me if I had tried to download something recently. I did try
to LOAD a program from a disk for a peripheral device, but security restrictions shut down the installation. Have reloaded the wallpaper, but the
result is the same. Anyone with any clues? It is not much more than an
annoyance, but it is something I would like to find the ANSWER to.
Thanks. Have you tried performing a System Restore to a point prior to this happening? Is that wallpaper a standard Windows wallpaper or something you downloaded from the Internet? If the latter, where did you get it, and what's it called? What happens when this wallpaper fails to work? Does Windows display another wallpaper or what? Can you set another wallpaper as background?

What protections are you using for viruses and SPYWARE?

Solve : Need a registry fixing tool- not cleaning tool?

ok, maybe it's not the best route then.

Quote

im pretty sure you have to pay for a tool such as the one you want , well i did any way

what do you mean by "well I did anyway" did you use a program to correct registry issues that you had at one time? If so, which one did you use?First travel Here and follow all the instructions.

Note: This will also provide you with a tool to backup your Registry...

Next travel Here and read the directions to familiarise yourself with the procedure. I suggest printing out a copy for reference.
Pay special attention to the warnings listed.

If all the steps are followed correctly your XP install will be fully repaired and all your Programs and DATA will be INTACT...

However you may want to consider backing up the important things first...

Good Luckso a repair install is that dangerous huh?

you don't by any chance know of a program that can repair the registry do you patio?

Or, I was thinking, is there any way that I can force a reinstall of my applications, at LEAST most of them. What I mean, is, is there a file that every program has that I can use to reinstall the program?I HAVE FOUND THE CULPRIT!!

After a couple more hours of browsing the web, I have found out why this problem happened to me (change/remove buttons MISSING in add or remove programs)

Yahoo! messenger

this has only started occurring since I UN-installed Yahoo! Messenger.
I have also read of other people who have had the same thing happen to them once they UN-install Yahoo! messenger.
Anybody have any ideas as to who I should complain to over at Yahoo!?

PLEASE, as a warning to anyone with Yahoo! Messenger, do not! uninstall Yahoo! messenger, *censored*, don't even IN-stall it.I did it the long way, I reinstalled all of my software apps. Yeh, I still can't believe I did it, it took me like the whole evening. And I still need to go and find a few more freeware programs and un/reinstall them.

This just seemed like the "lowest risk" method available.

Now, does anybody have a good guide on how to back up the entire registry?? (and how to use the back up, just in case)Click on the link for ERUNT in the Norton Removal instructions...I did not see a link for ERUNT in the norton removal instructions, however, I googled it and found the download, then installed and ran the program, pretty sweet. So I guess now, as long as I can boot into windows, I can repair my system to the status that its at today, without doing a system restore!

Thanks for all the help guys,
keyoutYes but make sure to read up on using ERUNT. There are different circumstances that would require different methods to restore a corrupted registry.

How can I get it to remember this? Thanks I would say TRY all if not most of the options in power mangement aka , 25 min 30 min 45MIN and see what happens........hi all, It seems my problem was that I had unchecked load power PROFILE in my selective startup. Small problem solved, Big ones to go.
Thanks

Solve : Icons won't open programs, will only open on run?

Answer»

I have a windows 98 computer. It seems everything is OK, except I can't GET programs to run through clicking on Icons. I did a download of exefix08.reg and that makes it work, but every time I shut-down and start-up I have to reinstall. I have used command prompt and done Copy A:\Regedit.exe c:\windows and regedit a:\exefix08.reg. It says it imports files into the REGISTRY but it doesn't CHANGE. I have done a virus scan and there is no virus. Can anyone tell me what to do.

Solve : New wide screen monitor stretches pics?

Answer»

I upgraded my 5-year old Gateway 500SE PC with a 19" SAMSUNG 906BW wide screen (1440 X 900) monitor, but my machine does not have display CHOICES to match. I have 800 X 600, 1024 X 768, or 1280 X 768. All these settings stretch and/or squash my photos, etc. Is there a way to bring everything back into proportion and utilize the full widescreen? Can it be done with DRIVERS, software, or do I need a new graphics card? I currently have an Intel 82845G/GL graphics controller.

Solve : Downloads Keep Stopping!?

Answer»

Everytime I try to download a file, whether it be big or small, it stops halfway or just sticks there and doesn't move, even after waiting for an hour. I can't even install Internet Explorer! I've tried every safe site I know, but it doesn't matter. I know I don't have SPYWARE, malware, viruses trojans ETC. because I have ZoneAlarm and Kaspersky and recently posted a HIJACKTHIS log.

I have a Linksys router and when I tested my download speed on an internet connection test sight it said It was 3 Megabits per second, so I KNOW it's not my internet connection (at least I hope not)!

Someone, PLEASE help me.ok what internet browsers to have INSTALLED at present....Mozilla Firefox is what I use all the time.Download this:

Could be that if you don't clean up the temp files for Internet you will have this problem.

Alan <>< Out of curiosity, do you have a link to where you posted your HijackThis log?

Solve : formatting hard drive windows xp?

Answer»

ok when trying to format my hard DRIVE and reinsall WINDOWS xp, i have placed the windows xp CD in the CD drive and i opened BIOS and set the CD drive as the first bootable device.

however, as the compuer boots, it says "Press any key to boot from CD...". i continually press enter and other keys but the windows XP CD doesnt load, and the computer REVERTS instead to booting from the hard drive. there is nothing wrong with the CD because it loads normally with the installation setup screen on windows xp. is there possibly something wrong with my keyboard, whereby it doesnt function properly when the computer is booting? it does function perfectly fine when i am using windows on the same computer, like at the moment. or is there a problem with the way in which BIOS responds when i CHANGED the first bootable device to the CD drive?

please give me any help u can. cheers.Try using a keyboard that has a ps2 connection not USB or wireless.

Solve : OUTLOOK - not able to receive/send emails?

Answer»

Good norning,

When trying to send/receive emails, Outlook indicates it is 'unable to find an object' ... no error coide number. In the logs, there is a statement 'The service Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (STMP) TERMINATED with an error 'The system can not encounter the specified routing' ... I´ve tried reinstalling Office XP Pro with Outlook 2002, and all the updates available to the Microsoft Office site.

I am able to access my emails via webmail on my host server ... but not able to get via Outlook. As I normally receive 500 - 600 emails per day, theis is REALLY a problem.

Make certain your SMTP settings are correct and that your firewall isn't blocking the program. When you set up your email account in Outlook, did you click on the Test Account Settings button to check your setup? I would review the settings and use the Test Account Settings button. If the test does not pass, then you need to investigate further.Good morning ....

Not exactly sure how to check STMP settings ....

The strange thing is that when I setup the email accounts, I did run the test feature. Checking with WEBMAIL, I see the test messages in the box .... but OUTLOOK doesn´t receive or appartently send from withinthe program itself. I did try to send messages and they just stay in the Outbox.

DonaldPlease make sure to check the code given by Outlook when it fails to receive the messages. Also make sure to delete all old messages as you make reach the limit and won't be able to receive any more messages.SMTP settings means the code you must insert into the email account setup panel that looks like this:

And, that panel is where you also see the Test Account Settings button. Then the STMP settings are correct. OUTLOOK is still not communicating.

What limit? My .PST file is 1.6 GIG .... but has been working fine until three or four days AGO. Then I lost all my email accounts and had to reinstall them. I ran SCANPST on the data file several times yo make sure it was clean and organized.

DRClick on the More Settings button in that panel. Select the OUTGOING Server tab. What settings do you have there? Select the Connection tab. What settings do you have there? Select the Advanced tab. What settings do you have there? Can you contact your ISP or find info on their website about the correct settings for an Outlook email account?

Back to the E-mail Accounts panel, what about the check box for "Log on using Secure Password AUTHENTICATION (SPA)"? What setting do you have there? Can you verify it's the correct setting with your ISP?POP3 setting is "mail.andetur.com.br" (My domain and email is on the andetur.com.br)
STMP setting is "mail.andetur.com.br"

email user settings are [email protected]
then pasword for that particular user name

The secure setting is deactivated. Port settings are 110 and 25 ....

These are the settings required by the domain and mail host BRAZLINK.COM

These are the same settings that I used successfully for over 7 years with the same host ...

DRDo you have telephone support with your ISP? If so, I wouldn't hesitate a minute longer to call them.

You might try setting up your email account in Outlook Express just to see whether it will work. Go to Tools, Accounts, select Mail, click on Add, and enter the coding for your email account. You already have the coding you need for that.Outlook Express doesn´t load either ... it tries to install MSN Messenger but only comes up with a blank screen. I tried to update from MSN. Tried to reinstall XP OS to repair the system. Still the same. Frustrating.

DRRepairing OS didn't do? Reformat and reinstall.

Solve : memory error when using windows search function?

Answer»

I am a HELPDESK Tech trying to solve an issue for one of our users...

Here are the specs: Dell Latitude D630, Windows XP SP2 and current with updates. It is a new load of the software.

Here is the issue: When using SEARCH (Start | Search) the following error pop up:

The title bar says explorer.exe
The instruction at “0x0000000” referenced memory at”0x0000000”. The memory could not be “read”.
Click on OK terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

The user can open up IE6 and USE the search function with in there to search for files or FOLDERS on the hard DRIVE. However, if the search function is left open and IE is closed and reopened then the same error will pop up but with iexplore.exe in the title bar. The search can be closed with the error opened and then we click OK on the error and everything closes out. But, once IE is opened again it will work fine and the search function can be used again.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Amie

I believe the below from Microsoft may be a good lead.

Solve : Exiting Safe mode?

Answer» GUYS,
I wanted a little help.Yesterday i loaded Spiderman 2 on my PC.It was not working properly so i restarted the PC a couple of times.Uninstalled the game again installed it but still not working properly so i uninstalled the game completely.
In the process i had to restart my PC by pressing the CPU button since the PC got hanged.
Now today my PC is not starting. After the initial setup screen i am getting a blank screen.
I pressed F8 and went into safe mode then restarted again but still the PC is not starting in normal mode.
Please tell me how do i start in Normal Mode !!
Thanks

What caused you to have to restart the computer in the first place?
(Btw: Its not a CPU button, its the Reset button...)

When you get to the boot menu where you can select to enter SafeMode, instead of choosing "Safe Mode", chose "LAST Known Good Configuration"can you get into safe mode then select "last known good Configuration" then it should reboot,

if that does not WORK a "repair installation" would be your next route
  depending of course,
on what operating SYSTEM you are using?
and if you have installation disks?

Solve : green areas in XP defragment?

Answer»

I defrag my drivea alot. I NOTICED my work computer has very little of the green "unmovable" files, but my hame computer seems to have a ton of disc space occupied by these files. Both are XP - however one is Home, and one is Pro. What do these files contain, and why so much on my home pc?which ones home and which is pro?? sorry - work comp has XP Proi think its because xp pro has more features/files that deal with how your computer works then home does and thats why you see more green. i think the green are system files. have you tried going windows defrag for detailed DESCRIPTION on the what the colored lines mean?my home computer is the one w/ all the green - that's the wierd thing. Could it be Windows updates?not sure.. is your home one up to dateup to date how?like windows updateI'm at work, but according to my wife, the last Windows security update was 2/14/07, and the last Windows Hotfix was 3/16/07. then try the updatethe update at home didn't work - per the wife, all 18 updates failed. it did work here at the OFFICE, thoughhave her RESTART the machine and try againsorry - no luck againMore info on defrag:

Solve : Issue with cursor moving to new cell or subject without clicking my touchpad.?

When I move my cursor to a cell, that I want to update, if I move my cursor to another cell, it is automatically made the ACTIVE cell. Are we to assume you're talking about MICROSOFT Excel? And assuming we are talking about Excel:
Is the cell locked?
Is the document read-only or protected? Quote from: soybean on July 07, 2007, 04:01:18 PM

Are we to assume you're talking about Microsoft Excel?
I didn't explain my problem well at all. In any screen or program, the cursor will automatically activate a button if it rests on that button for a few seconds. This problem may not be XP. It may be my HP zv5000 laptop. I do not USE a mouse. I use the touchpad. As I am typing, if I move the cursor to another field, if it rests there for a few seconds, my typing moves from the original cell and continues my entry in the new field that the cursor activated. The terms I am using to explain this problem are probably not the best. This is the first time I ever wrote into a site to ask a question. Thank-you so much for attempting to find out what I am really trying to say. Do you run Windows Update?

Solve : OH NO Huge trouble?

Answer»

I have just had the worst experience with a so called techie.

This gets kinda complicated so I hope you can understand my blond babble.

It all started when I was hit with a bad virus from a website that blocked me from even getting into SafeMode. I didnt have a proper OS disk cuz my computer was built by my BIL. So I decided to send it to get a NEW OS installed and a new DVD Rewriter.

Sent it to the guy and he had it for over 2 weeks. I needed it back and the lady at the shop decided he was terrible to work cuz he took to long so she had someone else finish the installation of a new modem. and ship it back to me
So now that I have it back......................

I can see so many issues I have no idea what exactly is wrong or how to fix it. You can imagine I dont want to send it to anyone else to even touch.

I was here once before and you guys were great!! I sure could use some help guys.
Here is a list of some of the problems I have so far encountered.

So far my dvd gives me Error messages. For instance.
Tried to play a cd. It does try to read it but then Nothing happens.

Tried to install a game. I get as far as the first menu screen that asks you to play or install. Then I get an error message and then nothing works

Then all my old programs and files I had installed before the virus are no longer available even though they were there. This I dont understand.

I used to have XP Pro and now my new OS is the Home version.

Is this enough info for you guys to give me some idea of what my problem is?
Twylla ...... Take a deep breathe and try and relax.

Can you tell us the current state of the pc in question?
Does it work?

Apparently, it now has win XP home installed and you have the authentic disk for that.
There was a new modem installed ......... is that correct and is it working?
Do you know if when the new operating system was installed ( XP home) was it put on a freshly formatted hard drive ? ( this procedure would have wiped the hard drive clean)
How was you data saved ? ( onto cd's )
Do you have the program cd's so you could reinstall them ?
Does this pc have a cd drive in addition to the new dvd - R/W?

Let us know.

dl65 Sigh

Ok I think I am better (LOL) TY

Yes the PC is working and so is the modem. I am able to use the internet, check my emails on MSN and Yahoo. I can download things from the web.

What it wont do is recognize any of the programs I had installed before the virus shut me out. IE: games, business card software, printer and everything else.
I can access my text documents, pictures I had and music and things like that. Just not programs. Spy Sweeper, Norton,

The XP Home is authentic. That is the reason I replaced the XP Pro. It wasnt authentic and I wasnt getting the Microsoft updates.

No the dummy did not put in on a freshly formatted hard drive and I think that is the problem.

No my data was not saved to cds or any other storage that I know of
He just installed Home right on top of the Pro.

I do have all my programs on disk so I dont care if I lose anything. I even told him to erase the whole thing so it would be squeeky clean and faster.

And I thought I could handle reinstalling XP again myself but because I do not have any other cd on my computer I cant do it until I FIGURE out why my DVD Rewriter doesnt like me. Twylla ...... Ok .... If you go into My Computer, does the new dvd drive show up ?

dl65 Twylla .... I just noticed that you cant access Norton, does that mean you have no anti-virus ?

dl65 Hi

Yes the DVD is showing and I have the AVG Free addition installed for viruses right now.Twylla ..... Glad to hear you have AVG installed.
Do you have the correct driver installed for the dvd-rw?
Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware Tab/Device Manager ....... then scroll down to the entry called DVD/CD-rom drives. Click on the + sign in front of it and see if there is a yellow exclamation mark.
Do you know if the burning software that came with the DVD- rw has been installed ?
What exactly was the error message you get from the optical drive ? ( DVD/CD - r/w)

dl65

Ok I dont see any yellow exclamation mark.

The Error message I get is titled "Demo32.exe- Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006). Click OK to terminate the application."

No I am not sure if it was installed. I click the different things on the disk and I get that error Here is another error I get from my DVD installation disk

C:\DOCUME~-HENRIE~1.HEN\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERc0006dir00\demo32.exe/mdmp

Twylla ..... Do you have some software installed on that pc called Demoshield or Demoshield player ?

dl65 Twylla ........ Lets try uninstalling the dvd drive and then have windows detect it and install the drivers.
Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware tab/Device manager/ scroll down to DVD/cd drives and click on the + sign to expand it , then highlight the dvd drive listed, right click on it and select uninstall.
Now close everthing up and reboot the machine.
Watch down in the lower right corner at some point as it reboots , you should see a message that windows has detected new hardware.
That message will REMAIN there for several minutes possibly and then you should see a new message that the new hardware is ready to use.
Before you test the dvd player, what media player do you use to play cds or videos? ( windows media player or something else )
Now put a music cd in the optical drive and then go back to my computer and see if the dvd icon there shows a cd in it . Right click on the drive icon and select play...... what happens ?

dl65
Sorry dl65 I thought I had notify to new POSTINGS but ....

So I did what you said. I uninstalled it but no New Hardware signal came up

I use Media player and I tried a cd audio and I got the message that the WMPlayer can not read the cd. The icon in My Computer shows the audio is present and WMPlayer can list the songs but wont play them. The song list is orange with exclamation marks and skips to each song trying to play it

Oh and it also tells gives me an error about Demosheild when I put the dvd installation disk in I get the error message that there is a problem with Demosheild and it needs to close Send a reportTwylla ........ When you went into the device manager , went to the dvd/cd drive , highlited it and right clicked on the highllite........ what option did you select ?........ Disable ? or something else ?

dl65 I must have hit disable instead. I did uninstall it now and the little pop up did show up this time. But it still isnt working although it says its all in working order.Twylla ........ ok , after you uninstalled the dvd burner, and rebooted , it reinstalled and was detected as new hardware installed ..... "Windows has detected new hardware" .....and then another message came up saying either that your new hardware has been installed and is ready to use.
Then you put a music CD in the drive and you get the message WMP cant read the cd.
What version of media player are you using ?
What format is the music on the cd in ? ( is it one you made or a store bought cd ?)
Will the dvd drive read a movie dvd ?
Is there a SMALL audio cable connected from the rear of the dvd drive to either the MOBO or the sound card ?
Quote

Twylla ..... Do you have some software installed on that pc called Demoshield or Demoshield player ?
   ....... I asked this before,but I don't recall any answer.
Can you give us the brand name and model number of the dvd drive .

Solve : Backup + restore options?

Answer»

Hi,

I'm currently looking at backup+restore options and I was wondering what are the best options out there?

- I need to backup 15 PCs (all Windows XP pro, wireless network)
- I'd like to create an exact image of each PC's hard drive so that I could later use that image to retore whatever PC needed to be REPAIRED.

I've had a look at some of the commercial SOFTWARE available, and I think Acronis True Image was the best (ahead of Norton Ghost). However, I'd like to have a look at free options first....

At the moment I'm about to try out a free program called DriveImage XML (http://www.runtime.org/dixml.htm). Have any of you used this with any success?

As a separate question, I'd like to ask if it is possible to connect my laptop to each PC separately, and make the PC behave like an external drive. Then I'm thinking I could use a backup program to create an image of my PC and save it on my laptop. Ideally, I'd love to have 15 images on my laptop, and whenever a PC needed to be repaired I could simply hook up my laptop to it and use a backup/retore program to restore the PC to it's original working state.

Is that even possible? Hopefully some of you have a bit of experience with these kind of things.

Thanks 8-)I've tried DriveImageXML and found it didn't come close to Acronis. With Acronis you can make an image, save it over the network to another location, make a boot CD that will allow you to recover that image from anywhere.

Thanks to GX1_Man for his endorsement

In answer to your second question, I don't believe you can do that. You'd have to use a cross-over cable to connect and then you'd be able to share files/folders/peripherals, but not have it act like an external drive. Besides, with Acronis you wouldn't need to hook up your laptop to each machine. Just share a folder on your laptop, create/save the image to that shared folder...you're done

Alan <>< Norton Save & Restore can do that for you as well. Quote

Did DriveImageXML work ok for you? I'm going to try to complete a full backup and restore tomorrow using it. As long as it does a basic job, then I'm happy. Obviously I'd love to use Acronis because I've read great reviews of it, but if I can use a more basic free program, then that would be preferable.Acronis is worth the money you will spend on it...especially if you are looking for backup solutions.

As far as the networking solution the easist way would be a USB cable with network support...

I'm first going to test DriveImageXML and see how I get on. If it's rubbish then I'll probably choose Acronis.
I think this IS one of the cases where you get what you pay for. Data is too valuable to be playing with a "maybe" solution. At least mine is. Norton Ghost Support mapping a network share as a Drive for the purpose of imaging,

So yes , you could have the 15 images in a folder on you lap top, hook up the PC and lap top to a network, and boot a Norton networking Boot disk, and use it to map a drive.

The problem is you may need a Different Network boot Disk/Disks for Each PC as network cards are not as Generic as CD Roms,
You may be able to do this with Acronis True Image , but i have no Experience whit it,

I have however Done what you want to do using Norton Ghost.

And Yes you Can Use a Networked PC as an External Drive, all you need to do is Share the folder you want to Write to , and allow Write Permissions. Quote

I don't keep any of my important data on the 15 computers, so a "maybe" solution is ok with me.
Besides, if it every goes wrong I can just do a clean Windows install using the original image that came when I bought the PCs.......that shouldn't take too long

I'm 70% through the restore procedure, so my fingers are crossed!! Pleeeeeease make it work I just finished a backup and a restore of one PC using DriveImageXML and it worked FINE!! I'm delighted!!
I think I'm going to use this program until I come across problems. Thanks to everyone who offered their advice and opinions in this thread.....MUCH appreciated Please post back after using it for awhile - one way or the other. Quote

Solve : Windows XP - very long/unusual startup?

Answer»

Hi, I've only just joined this site & have a Windows XP Home Edition computer. I'm concerned with how it starts up. A few nights ago, I was on Internet Explorer, Firefox & Windows Media Player at the same time when the computer partially froze in that I couldn't access anything from the taskbar & start menu. Being unable to shut down/restart the computer, I (stupidly) turned it off by the powerpoint. Now, whenever I start up, the Packard Bell logo is immediately on the screen for 2-3 minutes, with the message "Press F2 to enter BIOS" & "Press F12 to system boot" & it won't react when I press either key. Then the screen is black for a short while & then it goes onto the stage where the Windows XP logo is above the moving horizontal bar (which is normal). After going blank for a further 2-3 minutes, the mouse & log-on screen appear & the computer WORKS as normal - no information has been lost.
My antivirus software eTrust Vet Antivirus has not notified me of any viruses & nothing else is MALFUNCTIONING. Someone suggested to me that I needed to remove the battery from the mainboard, install it again & see what happens, but I'm not sure...
I would love to know what caused this weird startup & what can be done, THANKS!
If i were to hazard a guess, i would say it may be a problem with your hard drive, as you say the computer is very slow to start EVEN before windows starts.

I would remove the battery form the Mother Board, this will reset the mother board to default.

I would also try Turing on the computer with the HDD disconnected, if you gets to a Screen that says "no boot DEVICE" or such, quickly it would demon straight weather it was the HDD or notIf it even affected things outside of Windows, I suggest that you do indeed remove the BIOS battery.

However, you should also diagnose the RAM and HDD.

Solve : Windows Error Help!?

Hey I've been getting an error thats been bothering me for the past week. It has come and then gone away for awhile then when I thought it was done it came back.

This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

TIME before shutdown: 00:00:XX

Message
The system PROCESS
'C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe' terminated unexpectedly with status code - 1073740972. The system will now shut down and restart.

I've searched a bunch of forums and haven't found MUCH help there and I also noticed that the deal with different error CODES or files than mine. So I was wondering if there is anyone here that could help me cure this annoyance for good. Thanks. Have a good read: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911185Oh by the way before I read that, I'd like to let you know this error doesn't occur when I'm in Safe Mode. Oh and in this article it talks about lsass.exe while my error occurs with services.exe. Unless you believe this article thing applies for any of the related problems regardless of the file type. Ok well go through the troubleshooting guide on the site and see if you get any results , next time you get a error message on your computer that is windows related , punch in the code into microsofts search engine 99.9% of the time you will get a guide to help you fix that error....

Same error code ......both vital system proccses....Ok well this link seems to be for Windows 2003 but I have Windows XP Home SP2, so I have no idea what I would be doing to fix that problem with my OS cause the solution in the link is for Windows 2003.

Solve : Primary Disk Not Found??

Answer»

Don't know what exactly happened, it was working fine then it rebooted itself and when it came back up, it had the black screen saying "Primary Disk Not found" press F2 for SET up. What can I do? Is there anything I can try? (ie: in the set up) I am using XP by the way. Thanks in advance. What exactly were you doing when this happened?

It may be just a jumper setting on the hard drive, but if it was working, we can PROBABLY rule this out.

It may be a loose IDE cable...or a BIOS setting.

How old is your computer? A dying CMOS battery has been known to cause this as well.

Worse case scenario...your hard drive TOOK a dump!

Get back to us on this...with a little more detail as to what you were doing at the time and if there were any recent hardware or software changes.Well I wasn't doing anything special. I just had it on and was watching TV. I turned to look at it and it said beginning dump of physical memory and rebooted itself, when it came back up it was the black screen with the message "Primary Disk Not Found". The laptop is a few years old but I had no problems at all before. What is the make and model of your laptop?

First thing I'd try is to TURN off your laptop and unplug it from its electrical source. Next...remove the battery from the laptop.

Hopefully, you know where the hard drive is on your laptop. Remove the hard drive...then reinsert it...making sure it has seated properly.

Reinstall the battery and reboot your laptop to see if it boots into Windows. If it does...make sure your programs function and update your malware protecetion as well as visiting Windows Update for high-priority updates.

Also...while you have the hard drive out...check the manufacturer and model. Go to their website and find a DIAGNOSTICS program to download so you can check the integrity of the hard drive.

Post back with your results...I've seen this on an ASUS motherboard before. The IDE controller took a dump and had to be replaced...during tax season no less

Please help!
If you have your legitimate Windows XP CD, you can always try to repair your Windows XP installation.

The TROUBLE with doing a repair is that you may, and often will, lose any saved files and/or prgrams.

While the repair process can often help you out of a jam...the drawback is losing all this saved information. That is why you should back-up constantly...in case something like this happens.

I'm assuming you are using Internet Explorer 7. Please let us know if this is, in fact, true.

If you do decide to repair your Windows XP installation, please follow the link below for repairing Windows XP SP2 with Internet Explorer 7 installed:

Most of my important stuff is backed up on a external drive, like documents, but all my programs ARENT, not a huge deal though as I could reinstall those, thats just time consuming....
I am not using IE 7, been happy with IE 6, and with all the complaints people were having with 7 just stuck with it....

Hey patio, how you been....
I have the install disk, so if I do that it gives you an option to just repair instead of starting from scratch? If it doesnt get past the blue screen how will it read the CD? Tried running ANOTHER CD but it didnt do anything, but will try....
My girlfriend just took it to where we bought the laptop to see if they could do anything, its under warrenty but the tech guy isnt in today (of course, being the weekend ), but she thought she would try taking it there anyway, if she doesnt have any LUCK will try the install CD I gues....My girlfriend called from the computer store, they tried to used the Install CD but again it wouldnt get past the blue windows screen, not sure what we could do now....Been real well...thanx for asking.
If it won't get past the BSOD with the install CD you may be having a heat issue.
If it hasn't left the shop yet find out what they charge to do a thourough cleaning of all the ventilation ports and onboard fans.

Solve : My USB wont work?

Answer»

Hi there,

I need some HELP please.

Ive been using my USB on my computer for a long time and now all of a sudden, it wont work. I put my usb into the port but it just sits there and does nothing with the blu light showing on my usb. Sometimes its says : there was a problem installing the hardware or something. I really dont know what happened. I just recently got IE 7 but this was happening before I changed anything. I have Windows XP service pack2. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager...there will be numerous listings for USB including busses and ports.
Right clik each of them and select remove.
Ignore the warning message.
Re-boot and Windows will AUTOMATICALLY re-install them.
See if this helps.I did for only one of them, it was the one I was having problems with But im scared that if I remove them all, I cant re-install them because I read somewhere in the support centre on my computer, that I need to go to the manufacturer or something. Im really getting worried now I keep on getting this message. I removed them all, and they all automatically re-installed. But the same thing keeps happening. I get this message:

Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for "safe removal", but it has not been removed from the computer. (Code 47)

To fix this problem, unplug this device from your computer and then plug it in again.

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

I did everything. I even removed my USB and hooked up my printer (it has a USB cord) to see if it works and it does, its only when I insert my USB drive that it does that.

Any help is appreciated. The method suggested has been tried and proved safe many times....we would be doing others a disservice to offer bad advice here...

To try and remove the error message i would unplug ALL USB devices and shutdown. Wait 5 minutes and then re- boot the machine 2 or 3 times. See if this helps.

If this doesn't work let us know ...there are a few other things we can try.Yeah ive tried it a 5 or 6 times already maybe more. There is no other USB connections to the computer. Can we please try something else? Its just that I need to use my usb as it has some work on it I really need.

P.S Ive also tried inserting my USB into the USB slots at the back of my computer, it doesnt read it. Also the J: that is usually the one that I use for my USB at the front of the computer doesnt show up anymore. I hope I havent actually deleted it out of the whole computer system.....

Thanks for the help. Quote

Can you try using your USB flash drive on another computer? Does it work?Yes ive tried removing all usb connections. ive rebooted my computer about 5 times. ive also tried putting my usb on my sister-in-laws computer it also brings this message:

An error occured during installation. it could not be completed.(not exacly sure thats how the first bit goes) your hardware might not work properly.

(this happens opn my computer as WELL when I uninstall and re-install driver)

However, she does have a lexmark printer with a usb port and when I insert my usb into that, my usb works fine.

So im really really confused as to where the problem is.
Also like I said the J: where my usb goes on my computer has dissappearedMorning smurfette2031

Try this out.
1. How many drivers (Letter) do you have under My computer?
2. Try Control panel-->Administrative tools-->computer management-->Storage-->Disk management
and see if you can excess it from there if its not displaying thats means bye bye memory stick. Call me if you stuck. If its there and its sharing a driver letter its good you assign it to a different letter e.g(Z)

Let us know if U do this.....!!!!I have all the usual ones. (C:), (D:), (E:), I also have (F:), (G:), (H:), (I:), (J:) but J is the one im missing.

Also F,G,H,( at the back of the computer) also sometimes dont show up. I even tried doing a system restore but the system wont restore back to an earlier time. i alwasy get the message Your computer cannot be restored to this time for some reason. I really dont understand why this is happening as I alwasy update my computer or I think I do anyways.

Anyways please help me, im really getting frustrated.

ThanksDo you have files on that flash drive that you still want to retrieve? If so, I suggest you connect to your sister-in-law's lexmark printer, get the files you want, and then say goodbye to that flash drive.

Is it still under warranty? Another thing you can try is go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your Windows XP CD handy as it will ask for it.

Note: Remember the space between sfc and /scannow...hmmmm, i could try that, but I dont have the windows XP cd because Xp came with my computer when I first bought it. Is there anything else I can try:, because really i don think my usb is stuffed, i think its my computer. The drive has dissapeared....Borrow an XP CD to do this...it needs to be the same version as yours i.e. XP Pro w/SP2 or Home etc.

Solve : Changing default folder view?

This one will be simple - I hope.

It seems the default view for all my folders has switched to "detailed list". It's irritating having to change each one to "large icons" or "list" each time.

Can I change the default view for all folders, or all subfolders ?

Win 2000 SP4
HP OmniBook 6000 (old, but was cheap, and has LASTED...just)1. OPEN Windows Explorer

Solve : My computer did the strangest thing ever, should I be worried??

Answer»

I was online checking email when I heard the weirdest sound I've ever heard. At first I thought is was ONE of those banner ads with sound but the sound was coming from the tower (!) and not the speakers.

Witnesses describe the noise as a clicking, like a rotary phone (if you remember them). Or a ticktock, like a mechanical or wind-up toy. Maybe something like a cuckoo clock?

This sound goes for a couple minutes, then the computer just shut down with out warning. The next thing you see is the monitor saying "no SIGNAL."

I never even dreamed a computer could make a sound like that. We have no idea what to make of it.*baffled* Basically, everyone was "*censored*"....

I run XP Home Edition on a eMachines T3256. It's 2 1/2 years old...

Thanks.

PS That was 2 weeks ago and my comp SEEMS to be back to normal. But just to be on the safe side, most of my hard drive is backed up now...
well it sounds to me like your one of the fans is busted , its the only thing i can think off , and its also shutting down , im thinking your system fan is broken and your cpu is overheating = automatic shutdown..... or a wire of some sort was caught in your system fan making the sound and everyime to started up it would flick itself out , but when it was LEFT in for a while it would go back into the fan....just a THEORY

Solve : accidentally disabled mouse and keyboard in win98?

Answer»

Hi,
While trying to install a modem in an old 98 machine, I downloaded the proper USR driver executed it, but it did not properly unzip to the mentioned c:\usr folder. Nothing there. Nothing under c:\modem either.

So I downloaded winzip 11.1, thinking that the unzipping provided by windows 98 had not worked properly, and winzip might. When trying to install winzip, an ERROR message came up saying that a device on the system was not working, and the installation of winzip stopped.

So I removed the modem, and tried again to install winzip. Same error message.

So I went into Device Manager and there were a couple of those little yellow question marks beside two of the "other devices" so I double-clicked those items and said to "Disable in this hardware profile".

Alas, when I rebooted, neither my mouse nor my keyboard would work. My bad!!

I can boot to DOS. Is there anything I can do there to re-enable my mouse and keyboard?

I can also boot into Setup. Is there anything I can do there?

I cannot provide any windows system info, as I cannot do anything in windows to get that info. So sorry.

If anyone can help this hapless idiot, it would be APPRECIATED!Boot to DOS. At the prompt, type scanreg /restore and select a DATE prior to the mishap.Tx for reply. Actually, on another BOARD, I got the IDEA to try to boot in Safe Mode, did it, was able to go back into Device Manager and remove the offending selections to disable those devices in the current profile.

Rebooted and things back to normal!!!

Again, Thanks for interest.

Cheers!

Solve : Processes & some programs aren't working, download troubles, buggy, sort of slow?

Answer»

To start, I downloaded and installed Azureus awhile ago with no trouble at all. The program ran like a dream, and I was very, very happy with it. The only problem I had before this was with Graal Online, a game that I had toyed around with some time before. I wanted to play with it again, so I downloaded and installed it. The shortcut appeared on my desktop, and I double clicked it to get it to run.

Nothing happened. I waited for a few seconds, expecting something to appear on my screen. I waited for around a minute and still nothing. By now I was getting annoyed, so I reinstalled it and tried again. Same thing. After that I uninstalled Graal, FIGURING that the program might have been buggy. It was the last thing on my mind for awhile, that is, until I installed Azureus.

As I said, the program ran like a dream for a long while, but then after a few weeks of using it, it stopped working. Simple as that. I double clicked the shortcut on my desktop to no avail. I even went as FAR as GOING into its program folder and running the .exe file. That didn't work either. I even tried making a new shortcut, but nothing would work. I uninstalled Azureus and reinstalled it again. Same thing happened. To this day Azureus still does not work and I'm getting sick of it.

Now my computer is being very buggy, and a bit slow at times. In fact, when running Mozilla Firefox 2.0, I went to Nexon's website and tried installing Maplestory (for the ONE fact that it, like Graal and Azureus, refused to work after awhile). This time I was greeted by the download simply STOPPING. I tried again and again, perhaps 5 or 6 more times before I gave up. Then Internet Explorer went buggy. Sometimes when I try to install things, the download simply refuses to launch.

I'm running MS Windows XP SP2, an Intel Pentium D CPU 2.80GHz, I have 512MB RAM, and have a RADEON X300/X550 video card. I download all the necessary updates for Microsoft Windows XP, and I have Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, ZoneAlarm Pro, and Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0.

Someone please help me, I'm at wit's end. . .
