Solve : Cannot doubleclick Local Disk C?

Answer»

How to fix it? Reinstall windows also cannot

Just a couple of ideas...

1. Open a command window and get to the c:\ folder and see if there is an autorun.inf file there. if there is, delete it, it should not be there. Reboot a couple of times.

2. Have you looked in Start>Settings>Folder OPTIONS>File Types to see
what's there under "File"?

How to try idea 2?

first 1 cannotGo to 'start', then 'run' type in------> regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

Then click OK.

One idea for that will work "i had that viruse also"
Ok right click your HD and you will c that autplay/autorun is on and Open is far down on the list. If u clikc open it should open but double click wont help.

Try to Symmatec anti-viruse and scan your PC. you are infected by (Fuji win32).

but then , in the first post, OP says "reinstall windows also cannot". wonder whether he reinstalled correctly or not.Chances are, the DRIVE contents were left the same (a repair instead)

A complete format would probably solve the issue, yes, but is the OP willing to? The OP has been given various pieces of advice which he has EITHER ignored or failed to understand. In such a situation I would go along with the often CRITICIZED help line policy of advising a full format and fresh install.

Recently, my computer has been running extremely sloooow. I watched the clock yesturday and it took about 42 minutes for it to start windows xp. It isn't any better in safe mode. Normally, it should fly down the list of drivers and files, but it took about 45 minutes to complete the list. I have AVG installed, but I don't think that a virus has anything to do with it. Please post as to how I may speed it up, or what might be wrong..

*It has a pentium 3 processor, and 512mb ddr ram, if that helps...What Operating System do you have?
When did this start?
What protections do you have installed on your computer?
Any new hardware or software installed on your computer before this started?
How big is your harddrive? how much free space do you have?

Solve : Windows XP and 2000?

Answer»

When I boot up my computer it prompts me to either boot using windows XP or 2000 I'd like it just to run XP automaticly and delete the windows 2000 version where would I start to get rid of the second operating system? You need to edit your C:\BOOT.INI file. Post it on here and we will tell you what to remove.
I went into my C drive and cant find a boot file I also tryied searching it in my FILES and folders on the C drive with no luckIts hidden.

Select "Show OS files" in the folder properties.

Wont advice to edit the boot.ini, as you will forever loose the 2000.

Right click on "My computer" (not sure exactly here), there is an option which tells you   which OS to select and display the choice menu for how many seconds. If you know where your operating system?
I mean that if 2000 is on D: drive then format it.( FIRST backup of all your data)

You won't lose the 2000 if you make a copy of the old boot.ini to (say) boot.ini.old

How are we doing, rockstar4cs?  What have you done on this so far?

Exactly what happens when you see that screen?  If you do nothing, the computer proceeds to boot under the DEFAULT OS after a set time, right?

You don't need to actually remove Windows 2000 just to stop that screen from appearing.  Just edit the boot.ini file (see the link contrex provided) Deselect the option Time To Display List Of Operating Systems.

Of course, if you're sure you never want to use Win 2000 again, you might as well remove it from your hard drive to FREE up the space.

Solve : Can't remove a program in add/remove programs?

Answer»

Hey everyone, I am on Windows XP. I recently had to do a system restore, and a PROGRAM I had removed (Verizon Internet Security Suite) came back onto the computer. Now I can't remove it in the control panel add/remove program function. I tried to MANUALLY delete it, but no go. I tried to use the TWEAK ui program, as suggested on this website, but I don't think it works for XP (can't find the add/remove tab). I tried to manually uninstall it through regedit, but it does not show up under the uninstall folder. I am out of ideas, and WONDERING if anyone has any suggestions. Thank you for your help.
MikeSO through internet searching, I came across a program - AddRemove 4Good, with a free trial. It did remove the program form the add/remove list, but the files are stil on y computer. I have deleted manually all the files I was allowed, but there are still 25 files left. Any way to get rid of these? Thanks for the time, and the help.
MikeAmother update...was able to delete all files except one: McciTrayApp. Says:
"Cannot delete McciTrayApp: Access is denied. Make sure that the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use"
Any suggestions? Thanks again.

Unlocker is a tool which will help you removing this scandaleous Windows

Simply right click the file or folder and select Unlocker. If the file
or folder is locked then a window will appear with a list of processes
locking the file or folder. Select the locks and click Unlock and you
are done.

It is recommended to Unlock wisely and to close open processes locking
files or folder if any, but if only Explorer.exe is the CULPRIT, do not

Solve : CONSTANT REBOOT PROBLEM XP home edition?

Answer»

Last night while playing an online game my laptop froze up.  I ened up having to power it down via the pwr button.  Upon reboot of laptop windows did a scan due to the sudden shut down of the pc.    Upon completion of the 3 step scan there was a message that said something like unkown hard disc error.  Not thinking i just resterted the laptop without writing down wat the exact message was.  Since then my laptop will only get to the point that u can get into bios the n goes to a black screen with a single cursor in top LEFT corner and reboots.  I have checked cmos, cleaned entire laptop inside and out, tried to find a hard drive diagnostics for Toshiba but found nothing.  I would try to use system recover disk that came with the laptop but its now available due to the fact that I recently moved and my stuff hasnt arrived from bahrain yet.  No original XP CD came with the laptop when i bought it in 2004, jsut the recover disc.  Is there any site i can download a Win XP Home edition Recovery disc or perhaps a diagnostics program for my Toshiba MK8025GAS 80G Hard drive.   And yes i can hit F8 to get to the options for Safe MODE/last know good comfig/Debug/normal mode....I've tried all and none work.  They have same result with the laptop rebooting over and over and over.  I have Nortan 360 on my pc and do regular scans every week.  Im assuming the problem is either the Hard drive or XP.  I would take the hard drive out of my laptop but due to the fact that I dont currently have a case that will adapt the laptop hard drive to the inputs of a regular desktop pc.  My biggest fear is that im GOING to have to replace the hard drive which in turn will focre me to purchase XP since Best Buy/Circuit City (been so long i dont remember) never provided an original XP disc with the laptop and neither is the problem.  Please give any info that could help with this issue. thank you

Norton 360Just a heads up:
We cant give you a download for the Windows XP CD

We can rule out virus (thats a good thing)

My best suggestion:
Wait until you get the restore disk
There may be no way to recover your data, since it seems to be total data corruption.
When you get the restore disk, choose the repair option, and you >should< be able to keep all your data (and that saved game!) It will probably take a moth b4 my shipment get here and to be honest Im not sure the recoverydisc is in it.  Never had to use it before now.  Is there anywhere to purchase a recovery disc?  Or are the recovery disc's specific to an XP installationyou dnt want to mess up your laptop get a technician You should be able to contact your laptop manufacturer and ask them about the purchase price of a recovery CD for your laptop.

The laptop reboots so i cnat quite get the messeage written down...
There should be a key SOMEWHERE on your laptop that says "Pause/Break"
Press it right when the error message comes up.
This should stop the BIOS from continuing on to the next boot device

Possible problems:
Incorrect Boot Order
Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 082)
Copyright (C) 1997-2000 INTEL CORPORATION

For Realtek RTL8139(X)/8130/810X PCI FAST ETHERNET CONTROLLER v2.13 (020326)
pxe-e61: Media test falure, check caple
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE Rom

This it all it says when i try to boot form cd/dvd drive.  I have the win xp disc in when i try this.  Seems that is saying the drive isnt connected properly. It appears to be attempting to boot from your network

If you know how:
Enter your BIOS, and make sure that the CD/DVD drive is set to load before the hard disk drive
(Then exit and save the changes)
Or (better yet)
If (when you start the computer) your BIOS screen shows a key to load a boot menu, press that key, and select the CD drive.

This is a legal XP CD, correct?

Solve : Blue screen with unknown code...?

Answer»

I recently uninstalled Google Toolbar and various other objects which i thought were of no relevance to the running of my Advent Laptop. I found that when I now turn on my Laptop it loads all the way to the WELCOME page then the Desktop, but within 30 seconds no longer I get a BLUE screen and the following code.

0x0000008e (0xc0000005, 0xf369ec86, 0xf2c33cb0, 0x00000000)

This is the only reference to what can be wrong, and I have no idea what it means.

Any HELP would be absolutley amazing.

I am able to start up in Safe mode if that is any help? I have also started in Safe mode and been unsuccessfull in doing a system restore, it takes a long time and then states it was unable to restore.

is there any way you can tell or is there a somewhere you know which could give me exactly what it means, i couldnt even find it after hours of looking on microsoft!!

Hey thanks, i read through the whole of that and divulged into a few other links but i am still curious as to what the code that was given means?

The hex numbers in brackets are likely to relate to memory LOCATIONS and CPU registers and may well vary wildly from computer to computer. The first number is the significant one that will give the most information. Specifically,

0x0000008E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

A kernel mode program generated an exception which the error handler didn’t catch. These are nearly always hardware compatibility issues.

Is it another bug of WinXP?

And how are you checking the drive's free space ? ?Well, I'm sure that the Hard Drive is 80 Gb of capability, because this is the informatios that the system shows me, and the HD STICKER say the same info. Solve : Service Pack 2 Problem?

Answer»

I have a Dell Computer that is running XP Professional but in Service Pack 1.  I bought an iPhone, which requires that I upgrade to Service Pack 2.  I tried installing Service Pack 2.  I downloaded all the upgrades, and they require me to restart the computer.

When the computer restarts, the dell screen shows, and the Windows screen shows.  Then, the screen that has me choose a USER does not load.  Instead, the screen goes black and the light on the monitor changes from green to brown.  However, the computer is still running.

I have rebooted in safe mode which brings me back to Service Pack 1.  I have also rebooted to my last known good config and something interesting HAPPENS.  A window pops up that tells me "Services and Controllers Apps..." needs to be closed.  When I close that window, another window pops up TELLING me the computer will be restarted in 60 seconds due to services.exe and error code 1073741819.

.  Is this a registry problem? Virus?

I have attached a hjt logfile if it is of any help.  Thanks.  What the *censored* is going on here?

[Saving DISK space -  OLD attachment deleted by admin]I dont think this will help you much, but it will allow you to troubleshot farther:

Solve : Trouble with Hotmail and Outlook '03?

Answer»

Trouble with Hotmail and Outlook '03:

I TRIED added a hotmail account to Outlook. The settings are all good, it added no problems. The thing is it wont send and receive any hotmail.

An ERROR message comes up (0x800CCCF6) : 'The server responded 'Access to Hotmail via Outlook and Outlook Express now requires a subscription. Please sign up at http://join.msn.com/general/Email'.'

I have gone to that website and it has all the offers, such as hotmail, messenger; special offers etc .... surely I don't have to sign up for all of them, that's just stupid.

I click on the hotmail icon and 'sign up', it then says I have already signed up (hence I have ninemsn hotmail) ... I also have messenger, so I don't know what the heck the problem is with it.

Any ideas?Oh

BTW, the error states Outlook AND OE require subscription .... My partner uses OE with Hotmail with no problems, so this cannot be a case of Outlook or OE refusing free mail accounts ?... .there has to be another EXPLANATION?

Cheers

AimeeI did a search on Google and found that Hotmail no longer allows free accounts to use Outlook Express any more.  This is because Hotmail is paid for using the advertising and if you use Outlook, they wouldn't be able to advertise at you any more.

You may consider signing up for a Gmail account.  They allow you to use any e-mail CLIENT.  You can sign up for a FREE account at www.gmail.com

Also, here is a link to instructions on how to configure Outlook to get your Gmail.

Hope this helps.  Sorry about the Hotmail not letting you get your mail in Outlook.   *censored*....

To me, it sounds like your system is associating Notepad with your image files.  Thus when you double click on an image file,  WinXP loads it into Notepad.
You need to change that file association.    I assume you want to associate your image files with some image viewer program,  not Notepad.

Sorry,  I don't have XP, so I can't step you through it.     I'm commenting only because it looks like a couple of the above responses didn't catch on that all you need is to change your file association -  and perhaps now somebody that does have XP will jump in here.

Find an image file in Windows Elplorer.

Solve : Windows Password - Safe Mode Weird Jibberish!?

Answer»

Ok.
1 - WHY would after MONTHS & months of being able to use this computer - All the sudden - it won't let me use it & wants a WINDOWS PASSWORD?     Why would it all the sudden be asking for it?

The username is indeed mine - but I have no idea what the password is - I've not encountered this screen before as far as I know.    What would've HAPPENED to where all the sudden I can't get on due to this?

2 - Now, I try to press f8 & enter thru safe mode - as my techie suggests ---- but I still come back to this same screen -    If I don't get to this screen -    Selecting Safe Mode brings up a bunch of DOS looking Jibberish with no prompt.   What in the world do I do with that?

I guess I'm going to have to PAY for my techie to come for a home visit.

If you could advise me what this Safe Mode jibberish is & what I do I'd be much appreciative.

Otherwise, can you tell me WHY it would all the sudden be asking for the windows password when it's gone right by this & worked well for months & months?

All I can say is that I did not steal this computer - tho I don't expect anyone will believe me.

In lieu of telling me how to get thru, could you please HINT as to why this is all the sudden stopping me?    or what this safe mode dos looking jibberish is & what to do about it.    I'm tired of booting this thing over & over & over f8ing & hoping to get back on line.    Bet my Techie could fix it in a heartbeat - I just hate to pay him $75 to do it.The safemode gibberesh is normal...you have to be patient and let it load all the way.
If safemode has not been used in a while this can sometimes take 3 or 4 MINUTES....

Another thing you can try is when prompted for a password if there never was one just try hitting Enter and see if this let's you continue.

I have no explanation for why this would happen all of a sudden except that it's Windows....Can we just get something straight... this is how you spell "gibberish".

patio is right, you have to wait a while for safe mode.

You have never set a password for that account? Is this your own personal PC or is it a shared family one or at school or work? Has anybody else been monkeying with it? Can you interrogate them? Have you tried pressing Esc or Enter when it asks for your password?

First I would try Contrex and Patio's suggests and if they don't work, please consider mine.
If you're using Windows XP Home, I had this same thing happen to me.  I went into the user accounts under control panel and something called .Net or ASPNET had created an account.  (I don't remember the exact name.)  Anyway, I think it had happened when I went on to the MSN Hotmail site.  I deleted this account, which, as long as it's not your primary account is ok to do.  After that, I rebooted and the system didn't ask for a password again.  If you need more details, let me know.  Hope this helps a bit.

Solve : Data on a dead hard drive?

Answer»

Can data on a dead hard drive be accessed?  I have to return it to the Mfg, and I want to know if I need to worry about it.
It depends on how the drive died. Data on a "dead" hard drive can sometimes be accessed, by various methods, in ascending order of cost and time:

If the circuit board has failed one can swap it for one from an identical drive.

Specialist data RECOVERY companies have clean ROOMS where they can take a drive completely to bits and reassemble the platters with new heads, motor assembly, etc.

Outfits like the CIA have special electron microscopes which can take an image of a hard drive platter and reconstruct the data.

It all depends on how badly the data is wanted. These techniques range in time and cost from a few hours and maybe $500 to days and weeks and thousands of dollars, and even the cheapest and QUICKEST of them is very unlikely to be practiced by a hard drive manufacturer processing a return, as far as I can see. In any case, unless the data revealed evidence of serious criminal wrong doing, you would be protected by data privacy laws, I would have thought.

I read about a case of a cocaine smuggler in London who kept details of his transactions on a Psion palmtop, and thought that he had erased it all, but the police were able to read it all in their LAB and it sent him to jail for 14 years.

Then there was the notorious case of the pop star and child porn collector Gary Glitter, but that was a complete laptop with a functioning hard drive, he'd just messed up the configuration and sent it back to PC World and a curious staff member (against policy) had idly looked through the folders...

So if you are just worried about personal data such as bank and credit card details, I would not worry unduly, the hdd company probably has a policy in place to protect your data. You could enquire whether this is so. On the other hand, you feel reluctant to arouse their curiosity as to what might be on your drive. In this regard I would not worry unduly about pirated software or multimedia content or (legal) pornography. Such a discovery might provoke smiles at the hdd company but is unlikely to rebound on you.

Not that I am suggesting you have anything really bad, just giving EXAMPLES.

Solve : Process ImageWin3.exe?

Answer»

I'm using WinXP SP2, and this process is running at 50-51% constantly.  It's ImageWin3.exe, and I don't want to terminate it if it's supposed to be running, but some of my other applications aren't working correctly.  Does anyone know what imagewin3.exe is or what software uses it?  It doesn't come up on Google.

Thanks! It SOUNDS like a part of many scanning/imaging/OCR applications. It may be legitimate or it may be infected, that is, you may have a trojan. 50-51% cpu usage is suspicious. You could have got it by visiting a malicious website, or by installing dubious software.

Nothing came up when I Googled for imagewin3.exe, but when I chopped off the figure 3 I found this...

Quote

File C:\Program Files\TextBridge Classic\Bin\IMAGEWIN.EXE infected by "Virus.Win32.Tenga.a" Virus!

have you got TextBridge scanning/OCR software installed? Did you get it from a legitimate source? Imagewin seems to be a component of many Windows imaging software packages, so it could be ANOTHER SIMILAR program. You should do a virus check pronto! HijackThis! is a good program to try as well as your normal anti virus software. (You do have some, and it is up to DATE?)

How up to date are your security patches?

You could try

(1) stopping the process and see if it comes back after a reboot.
(2) finding the executable imagewin3.exe by a Windows Search (enable find hidden files) and run a virus check on that folder. You may need to reinstall any software that was in that folder.
(3) Run a complete virus check as a matter of urgency.

Tenga infects PE exe files. The virus can also act as a Network-Worm on machines with an unpatched DCOM RPC vulnerability. Microsoft Security Bulletin MX03-026 details the vulnerability. After launch, Tenga checks if the domain vx9.users.freebsd is available and attempts to dowload Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Small.bdc from http://**nt*.lycos.it/v**/dl.exe Tenga is a classic appending virus that increases the size of infected files by 3 KB.

and you can also upload the file to Virustotal and post a report backIt could be a legitimate file which has got stuck in a loop because something is wrong or corrupted. You could try stopping it and seeing what happens.
What protection do you have?

I'm not sure if you actually do have Tenga/Gael, but as a general rule of thumb...if a filename gets no results on Castlecops or Google, then it is most likely an infection.  Even if the file isn't malicious, it's not vital, so you can end the process.  But before you do that...

Scan the file with VirusTotal like unlovedwarrior suggests (follow contrex's #2).

Search for the file with Process Explorer and see what program the file is tied to.

Download HijackThis to its own special folder and post a log here.  Many of the files are safe and even vital, so don't make any changes until instructed to do so.

Solve : no controll over task manager?

Answer»

hi.

im new to this forum but i hope someone can help...

recently my task MANAGER has no bar sourounding it - this means i cannot swich between diddernt options or shut it down.

also on a side note - my java has buggerd up. any file sharing programs like limewire no longer work ?

could these be related ?

any help would be greatly apreciated.

plz also SEND a COPY of your answer to my email at [removed to avoid spam] if you can.

thanksno email address allowed here.

Your task manager has gone into tiny footprint mode. DOUBLE click on the border to put it back into normal mode. This has been covered about 6 times here. You should check earlier questions first, or dare i suggest it, type "task manager TABS gone" into Google. Not related to java problems.

Uninstall and reinstall Java maybe?

What makes you so sure that Java is faulty?  What brought you to this conclusion?

Solve : XP activation advice?

Answer»

Hi there!
Had to purchase win XP to ACCESS new broadband service
Couldn't decide whether to buy new PC or keep the old one going a bit longer
Decided to install on my old Dell 866/256
All works fine (thanks to dirtmasters help)
29 days to activation
Q. What if in 6 months time this old PC breaks down or I decide to purchase a more poweful PC. Would I then have to purchase another copy of XP?
Thankyou for any advice    You can always take the Hard Drive with XP on it and put it in the new computer. You might have to reinstall/install drivers for your hardware but you wont have to get a new copy of XP.What version of XP you bought determines what your options are. OEM or Retail ? ?

OEM is tied to the MACHINE it is installed on
Retail = one copy; one machine. You can reactivate it over the phone. you tell them  the CODE number on your screen. then MICROSOFT give you a re-activation code you type it into the boxes provided and its activated. the next time you reinstall xp it will just activate over the internet as normal. I've done it myself last week. QUOTE from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 01, 2007, 03:10:49 AM

You can always take the Hard Drive with XP on it and put it in the new computer. You might have to reinstall/install drivers for your hardware but you wont have to get a new copy of XP.

This won't work 90% of the time...the machine will not boot up properly without doing a   repair install of XP.

Solve : Local Disk appearing as unknown (LINK TO PICTURE INSIDE)?

Answer»

It's been like this for a while, I really don't know why, never did anything to make it like this, I have an image I took using Print Screen.

Everything works ok. But I want it back to normal, with the normal icon, obviously something is wrong.

The picture below is pretty big. Just in case you have a really old COMPUTER.

i'll likely reply tommorow, im pretty tired

Thanks.
Gnomestone ...... You didnt mention it but it looks like your operating system may be XP ....... if it is and your system is virus and trojan free, you could use the system restore feature to get things back to normal. You would have to set it back to when you know it was displaying correctly.

dl65  The usual explanation for this drive icon change is that an autorun.inf file has found its way into the root folder of the drive in question. Therefore look for such a file and delete it, in safe mode if necessary.
Thank you both for your replies.

I found a few autoruns, do i delete all of them? None of them are labeled unknown.

http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/4708/autorunmk8.jpg

There's the pic, 3 Autoruns under Intel.Autorun.inf files should only -- ever -- be found on a CD-ROM. You should not have ***any*** autorun files in your C:\ root folder, they usually get there because of installing some appplication wrongly, or more worryingly, because of a virus.

You should definitely delete these autorun.inf files. If they come back, this is a sign you have a virus. You should then take the normal steps to deal with this.

All of them? Im worried. Should i even delete the one that looks like a green machine Icon. I don't want deleting these to cause a problem. They are Intel files which basically runs my computer, can someone confirm all 3 are ok to delete? Two of them are the same icon, one is green, check the picture

ThAnksI deleted the 2 READ-ME ONES, that didn't work, but i didn't delete the one that looks REALLY important, the one that looks like a green machine, check the picture and tell me if I should do it thanks. As I have already said, autorun.inf files only belong on CD-ROMs, no matter how "important" the icon looks!

If you are scared, just rename it to Xautorun.inf rather than deleting it.

That folder is not the C:\ folder. It is the C:\Intel10.3 folder. Have you looked in your C:\ folder?

nothing is in my C:/ folder that is as explained, only the intel one, is there no way to fix my problem? want me to take a screenshot of my C:/ folder?Yes.have you now removed all the autorun.inf files?#
Thanks for staying with me everyone. Here's the pic of my C:/ folder

http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/9615/cfoldersd2.jpg

The only 2 autorun files i deleted were the READ-ME type ones, text ones, nothing autorun is in the C:/ folder so i didnt delete the green icon one

thxWhen you took that screen shot, did you have "show hidden files and folders" enabled?

Also, an autorun.inf file on a hard drive will do absolutely nothing useful whatsoever, no matter how impressive and important looking its icon may be. No matter what color its icon is. It should be deleted. If it is read-only it was probably COPIED over from the CD-ROM where it belonged.

You could try this

download tweakui from microsoft's xp website at the following
location and install it.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

this should add a powertoys option to your start menu.  in that sub
menu launch tweakui.  the last option in the tree on the left is
repair.  click it and the click the rebuild icons button on the dialog
to the right. Quote from: contrex on June 30, 2007, 11:16:53 AM

Solve : NTLDR missing error?

Answer»

Using PQboot32 I believe I accidently asked it to boot from a drive that wasn't there. Now upon restart it says:

Loading PBR for descriptor 3.....done

NTLDR is missing
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

I was wondering if there was anyway to cancel the command, as the computer insists on trying to boot from that location everytime now. I had made a floppy boot disk, but an error comes up when trying to use it. What floppy  boot disk did you make ?A boot disk for XP through the option under the A drive RIGHT click menu. It's available when you choose to format. I wasn't sure if having a boot disk would HELP me reverse the effects or not, I don't know that a set was ever made for the PC, as in when XP asks you to create a set of backup disks. You can make a floppy bootdisk with this-->HereI used that to make a boot disk, but got errors on every selection. I had an idea though. Since PQboot32 is trying to boot my computer from an empty drive slot, could I not theoretically move the main HDD to that slot and then if I wanted a normal configuration, tell PQboot32 to boot from the normal spot and swith it back? I think that might be the easiest answer, unless there is any reason I shouldn't move the hard drive around. It seems the something did happen to the NTLDR file, as it doesn't boot no matter the slot it's hooked up to. I booted another hard drive through the computer, and connected the problem hard drive through a USB adapter, but it comes up as "Backup" in My computer and contains a FOLDER called Norton Restore. It is labeled as an 18.5 GB hard drive, when the whole thing should be around 50. I'm not sure what happened there, but I was HOPING to be able to fix the problem by going into the hard drive, but that's not possible since the only VISIBLE partition is the "backup" one.Might try booting to your genuine XP cd then choosing the "Repair Windows" option.

Solve : how to move drive space?

I have 14 Gb of space on by C drive, which is getting quite full. My D drive has like 130 Gb on it, and as I only store games on it, there is alot of FREE space. How can I move space from D drive to the C drive? THANKS!!What operating system are you using?

Do you have any software for making/changing drive partitions? it's XP
not that I know ofDo you have one physical hard drive or two?I think only oneWhat make and model computer is that?  Have you made any hardware changes to it?Sony VAIO PCV RS 520
Have maxed 2 Gb RAM
Have added Nvidia 6800 graphics card
I think that's itOK, looks like you have a 160GB HD, which is obviously partitioned.  That's what I see Sony VAIO PCV-RS520.

Here's a good article on partitioning: Step-By-Step: Partition Your Hard Drive.  To do this without formatting your hard drive and reinstalling Windows, you'll need a utility such as Partition Commander or PartitionMagic.

An alternative to changing partition sizes is to clean up some of the stuff on your C drive to free up space.  Is your My Documents folder (which normally includes My Pictures and My Music) on C, which would be the default configuration?  You can move that to D.

I also suggest you get CCleaner and use it for disk cleanup.  Go here and get the Slim version: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspxMoving the swap file as well?

to move My Documents - that's a good idea - just right click and cut and paste? The swap file is the Virtual Memory file.

My Computer - ADVANCED - Performance - Advanced - Virtual Memory

Set it so the C: drive has a Custom size,

initial size 2 MB maximum size 50 MB

then set it so that the D: drive has a Custom size

initial size 1.5 times the RAM size, maximum 1.5 times the RAM size.

Solve : windows98- formated hard!!!!!!!!!?

Answer»

I am hopeing that someone can assist me in my PROBLEM. I have a Toshiba Satellite 2545CDS/2545XCDT. I relize that this is am old and none exiting computer, but I like my laptop and wish to keep it. anyway, what I am trying to say is I have lost all books that came with my computer, including my codes for installing my win98 program, once I have formatted my hard drive. I am in the PROCESS on re-installing my windows programs with my Toshiba Cd,but I do not have the codes for Win98. I do not know if anyone knows what I am talking about, But I hope that someone that is running a Win98 program can assist me in some way.

Thank You
Julie A.What codes exactly do you need/being asked for?

By your post I'm assuming you still have the Product License Key and have INSTALLED Win98 again It sounds like you don't have the license key for windows 98. This key code is needed to verify that you have a legitimate copy of the software. First, try looking for a Windows sticker on the computer itself. This will have the product key on it. Otherwise try contacting the place where you got your computer and sometimes they have that information on file. I had to do this once with an old gateway we had.

Good Luckgo to here

http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_manuals.jsp?service=EU

or here

http://support.toshiba-tro.de/tools/Satellite/s2540/manual/userman_s2540_win98_3000840_en.zip

and download the manual this is a zipped file which contains three floppy drive they have to be copied to floppys then put in the laptop drive when BOOTING the hidden partition will be installed on the  drive, that is if you have not formatted it all away you can contact Toshiba and after giving them all the details and serial numbers of the laptop they may have the correct windows 98 registration keys in their records.
for a list of Toshiba support have a look here:-
http://www.toshiba.com/tai/americas/us.jspIf you have not ALREADY formatted, boot to DOS and use this command:

FIND.EXE/I "ProductKey" %winbootdir%\SYSTEM.DAT

If you have formatted, you won't be able to recover the product key.

Solve : virtual memory low!?

Answer»

i have win XP 128ddrRAM 40gbhdd intel P4 STILL  ido not install any big software in cdrive , 51% empty space in cdrive (where  my os is ) but still i have allways get an message prompt that "your virtual memory very low " how can i ruldout this !You may need to increase the size of your Virtual Memory..

See here..

Good luckActually, don't increase your virtual memory. That won't really help anything. Instead buy some more ram.
128mb of ram is barely enough to run windows xp. I recommend 256 at the very least and 512MB should be a good amount for most programs. www.newegg.com has good deals on ram.
Virtual memory is almost like a partition on your drive. Infact, Linux creates a whole ENTIRE separate partition for virtual memory called a swap partition.  In windows, this file is called pagefile.sys. A general rule of thumb is to have the virtual memory set to 1.5 times the ammount of ram in your sytem. So if you had 1 GB of ram, 1.5 GB of virtual memory would be ideal. Increasing your virtual memory above the reccomended ammount would create thrashing and not help your system with speed at all. Buying another stick of ram as michaewlewis said is the best SOLUTION. You won't be disapointed in this investment!!You should buy more ram at least 512mb. but you can change your virtual memory (page file) by going to Control Panel >System>Advanced. under performance click settings then the Advanced tab. under virtual memory click change. be carefull. hope this helped Yeah, definitely upgrade to more RAM. 128MB is extremely slow. Go with 512MB or higher. (not that I'm adding anything to what everyone has already said) I always seem to post to late......  thanks , well i know it ,but i thought that there is  any other way to solve this problem , yes im going to buy another stik
once again thanks

Pretty old, then. Bub, you ain't missin' much at all.

You can do an install from an upgrade cd but you MUST have a prior version of Windows to make it work.

Put the W2k upgrade in the cd /  boot to it /  when it asks for your prior cd, put it in / after W2k 'likes' it, then put your W2k cd back in and continue with the install.

i was given this pc - a dell v350. old! pII, win98, 96mb ram, 8 gig hd,
cd rom. it may have a zip drive. which i know nothing about. (it looks
like a floppy drive, but a floppy wont fit.)

i removed most of FILES - some - whoever had it before cleaned it up.
i installed win2x prof. it did install, but there were some problems,

so i formatted the drive, "wiped it".

                              so i got a clean hd - a  win98 boot disk-
                              and a win2x UPGRADE cd.

Start a new topic with your issue and include more INFO on exactly what you did, machine specs etc. and someone will be along shortly...you nead to get hold of a full virsion of 98 install that then upgrade to 2000pro. or get a full virsion of 2000pro and do a clean instalation96mb ram?  i dont believe that thing has enough memory to even take win 2000, does it? Look up... I think an annoying number of people just "shoot from the hip" that is, they read the original post and straight away fire off their 2 cents worth without even READING the replies, often duplicating advice already given and/or making themselves look ridiculous. It is good forum etiquette to READ ALL THE POSTS before diving in.
okay - lookit - a full version - you cant "borrow" one , theyre all registered,
and an unregistered copy of 98 or 2000 "cheep" is rare.

btw - it did take 2000pro before i f$%&ed it up!!! look - its just
"too *censored* old".   i got all the booklets that came with it new. del.
from dell, round rox, texas - 1 dell way.

it came with 98, 333mhz pII proc., 64MB ram,  8 gig hd.  and p&p devices
removed exc. the 56k modem - i'll keep that. the one it came with.

the proccessor, hd, and mainboard are of no use.   i'll just take the modem
and trash it!

thanks for the advice guys!!!

by the way - i found for 40 bucks a  pIII 550mhz dell xps (top of the line!)
256 mbram 40 or 80 gig hd , i forget, and a xp sp2 upgrade cd!
i can upgrade my win2xpro on my good pc with it!

i got a power spec desktop, celeron 1.4 ghz proc., 512 mb ram, and a
tiny 10gig hd. a 40 would be better!) and a dell 15' flatscreen monitor.
(no crt here!) 100 bucks used fron a student on c-list. alot of good stuff
cheap on there.

                                       thanks for the advice

when the game finishes loading and i enter the game ... i cant use the WHOLE keyboard ... i cant use the arrows, letters, and not even numbers ... this applies only ingame ... when i type the login name and PASSWORD ...everything works fine ...

i checked all the accessibility options ... sticky keys arent on and niether are the filter and toggle keys ... but there is something akward ... when i press the SHIFT key .. the arrows and letters start working ...

and this applies for all flash games and built in computer games ... like pinball andd these stuff ..

im not the only one with this problem ... my sister's laptop has the same problem ...

im sick and tired of pressing shift ....

does anyone know how to fix it ... please help me  Do you have windows? If so, select start, then run, then type in dxdiag and click ok. Then go to the "DISPLAY" tab. Their you can test DirectDraw and Direct3D. Tell me if those are working right." DirectDraw test results: All tests were successful.
Direct3D 7 test results: All tests were successful.
Direct3D 8 test results: All tests were successful.
Direct3D 9 test results: All tests were successful. ?"

heh, well i guess no problems found ... everything is working fine .... but how is this gonna help me ?

and if you anything else .. please tell me
Try another keyboard.thats not the problem ..... i siad that my sisters laptop has the same problem ... and im sure that the keyboard has nothin to do with it ....

heh ... im tired of pressing shift !!!1Well, I think the problem is that there is no problem, may sound wierd, but maybe you have to press shift to enable the game on your computer. Since it's on both COMPUTERS, it's likely normal for the games your playing.Does your machine meet the system requirements mentioned on the website ? ?yer ... before one month is was working fine .... i just stopped playing for like 2 weeks because i had exams ... then when i started playing again ... the problem occured ...  no POP ups appeared ... its just the keyboard stopped working ...

its realy weird ... because no one i know has thesame problem ... maybe if i format my PC it would work again ?

jeeze ... what kind of problem is this ?! Quote from: patio on July 01, 2007, 07:06:55 AM

Try another keyboard.
Although you don't think it'll work because your sister's laptop also has the problem, you should still go ahead and try another keyboard.  It's a quick and EASY test.

Solve : Dell D500 Drivers??

Answer»

I seemed to misplace my drivers for my D500 laptop, the problem is, I re-installed Windows XP and now the screen and icons and everything are very large and I can't change the screen resolution. Is there a place i can go to so I can DOWNLOAD the drivers? The best place to go would be to Dell's website...specifically there Technical Support page.  There you can enter your Service Tag and download and INSTALL those drivers as they PERTAIN to the model of your Dell computer.what exact DRIVER would i be looking for?Basically...

Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware tab/Device Manager button.

Anything with an exclamation point NEXT to it means you'll need drivers or have driver issues with these hardware items.OK i went to the dell tech support and I see all the drivers I don't have but their not available on the website  either. http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=LAT_PNT_CEL_D500&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

Solve : Old IBM ThinkPad?

Answer»

I received an IBM THINKPAD 240 from my sister, which she got from her friend.
The laptop was not being used ever since she got it, and now she pass to me to check whether it can still be used.

The laptop came with Win 98. When I turn it on, it first gives a warning (after BIOS) that NAV Auto-Protect is unable to determine the location of the configuration file.

After click "OK", it continues to run to the user login, but then there it pops up an Explorer error:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

The problem persists after restarts. Same situations.

What can I do about it?

Thanks.See if your friend has all the disks that came with it...format it...and do a clean install.  It has all of her info on it anyway...which is useless to you if you're going to use it.

If you don't have a Windows 98 CD...see if you can get one from a friend with a valid license.

Of course you'll have to manually find the drivers, but that shouldn't be too difficult...you already know the make and model. That is the SOLUTION I can think of.
But the problem is that the laptop doesn't have a CD-ROM drive, and I don't have the cable that connects to an external one.
The connector is not serial or PARALLEL. Cannot get one from any shop. Have you tried the IBM website? The old part is expensive.

Do a google search for-->IBM -1969010 External 20x CD-ROM Drive

I think you would PROBABLY be better off to use a desktop with an
item like this---->ClickHere to copy a win98 install to.

You may also consider purchasing a copy of windows 95 on floppy
disks.

That's all I can think of friend. Can you boot to safe mode or to DOS?

Solve : 1386file problems?

Answer»

I hope someone can tell me what this means.  My computer said that I had a corrupt file and that I should run ChkDsK on my computer.  Chkdsk won't run because all my 1386 files have no program associated with them to run them.  What's up and what should I do?You shouldn't need the i386 files to run chkdsk..sounds like your Windows installation is corrupt.
Do you have an XP CD handy ? ?.

If so go to Start /Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter. No MAN, I have a Gateway and I don't have the Windows Disc.  I tried System Restore at one date and it didn't work.  I HATE to keep trying that until I find a date.  Isn't there any other way to fix this thing?Sorry but WITHOUT a Windows XP CD whether LEGAL or not at this point your options are LIMITED.

Solve : Weird \data\resources\ path?

Answer»

Hi
just RECENTLY i saw that ALL my short cuts have some how been changed to some kind of data\resources\ path... its really getting annoying..... the wierd thing about it is that the shortcuts still work... so its like the files have been copied to the data\resources\ directory...

so why is this happening??

this is what it looks like:

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/7448/firefoxshortcutfw5.png
http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/5745/yahooshortcutvf7.png
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/6859/palmshortcutnk9.png

and my system specs are in my signature

Thanks
Llama

EDIT::: i just tried something and it turns out that not only the short cuts are modified but EVERY folder in my C:\Program Files\ directory has a \data\resources\ path except ALL of them are hidden... is it a virus or spy ware or what im sooo confusedYour shortcut icons also look a bit strange...or is that how they normally look on your computer?

You've got yourself an odd little problem and I believe it's an infection.  I've seen this once before on another forum.  Unfortunately, the problem was never solved, so I don't have anything to reference.  All I know is that it might be somehow related to the W32.HLLW.Nautic worm.  But we'll do our best here.

Please post a HijackThis log along with a list of all of the protection programs installed on your computer.sorry i was on vacation the day after you posted and I just got back yesterday so I was unable to post..
anyway first off if you're referring to the little shortcut arrow on my icons then ya thats the way my icons are supposed to look.

i used to run AVG Free and Spy Bot but AVG CONSTANTLY gave me op32.exe virus alerts and it kept saying it no matter what button i hit (heal/ignore/delete) then spy bot ...wow the alerts i got from that took up my whole desktop not to mention 50% of my processor... so i dont really care for either of them... plus i think avg is still running because it says so in the process list

(so if you know of any other programs please tell me)

dang have to make this 2 posts because of the max allowed characters.......

EDIT::: nevermind it would have to be 3 or 4 posts so ill just attach it...

[Saving disk space -  old attachment deleted by admin]AVG and SpyBot are two of the best programs out there.  Those alerts simply meant they were doing their job (op32.exe is indeed a trojan).  Often, for an infection to be healed properly, you need to scan in Safe Mode.  I would strongly suggest re-installing them and doing just that.  Meanwhile, I'll take a look at your log.Alrighty, you've got a few baddies in your log, so let's see what we can do.  Once we start, you won't have access to this post anymore, so I recommend that you print out this post or save it to a Notepad file.

I see that you have HijackThis running from your desktop.  You have it in a permanent location, which is good because it makes important backups that you may end up needing.  However, to help you avoid clutter and to help ensure that the backups stay safe, I would like you to move it to a special location.

  • Double-click on My Computer to open it and navigate to C:\Program Files.
  • Right-click on the empty (white) space and go to New > Folder.
  • Name the folder something like HJT and move HijackThis into that new folder.
  • If you would still like to run HijackThis from the desktop for convenience, right-click on HijackThis and click on Create Shortcut.  This will create a shortcut to the program; move the shortcut to the desktop.
Download CCleaner (install without Yahoo! toolbar) and configure it according to this guide.

Open HijackThis and scan again.  Check the following entries, but don't do anything to them yet...

(Whether or not you remove these green entries is entirely up to you.  Personally, I think anything that accesses the net without your knowledge is suspicious, even if the info they track is supposedly legitimate.  If you'd like to read a little about it, go here.)

Now, close all windows (including this one) besides HijackThis, then click Fix Checked.  Close HijackThis and reboot into Safe Mode and enable hidden files and folders.

Navigate to and delete the following file(s) if present...

C:\Program.exe
C:\Program Files\GameCP\wcm\bin\srvany.exe
C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BWPlugProtocol-8876480.dll
C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\GAPlugProtocol-8876480.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ALCMTR.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mscomserv.exe

You don't have to delete the green files, but it is advised.

Once you've done all of this, reboot into Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log so we can see if there's any other junk we need to clean up.  Let me know how everything's running now and if you had any problems following my steps.

Phew!  I can definitely say I've never had a fix take up three posts!  But don't worry, it's not as bad as it appears at first glance.I would suggest following this man's advice from what you're saying about all the stuff popping up in spybot and the avg thing you've got an infection something fierce. I don't know that'd I'd even go the hijackthis ROUTE if it's that bad I think I'd just do a fresh install of windows.wow ok to start off i just want to say youve been a great help and i really appreciate it.

ok im about to do the things you listed but id like to know a little more before i start...

the ALCMTR.exe which is for my 5.1 realtek sound card so i shouldnt get rid of that, right?
and ive got an idea but what exactly will hijackthis do when i hit the "Fixed Checked" button?
im just a little curious

plus why exactly do i need the CCleaner and what does that do??

and to wicked: ya i would do a fresh install but when i do that it says it cant find any of my SATA hard drives and even when i get around that problem at the beginning after it restarts my computer it gives me the blue screen.... Quote from: llamas402 on July 01, 2007, 06:31:55 PM

Sorry, I normally include a little description for this file, but I left it out.  ALCMTR is related to Realtek, but it is not a necessary file.  In fact, it is considered by many to be spyware.  It's not malicious, but it does track certain activities and send the information back to Realtek.  I suggest removing it, but you don't have to.

Good question.  Basically, when you click on Fix Checked, HijackThis edits the registry entry and disables it.  It doesn't delete files (although the prompt makes it sound otherwise) and it doesn't always even delete the registry entries.  It pretty much just switches them off so the related file(s) won't run next time you boot your computer.

CCleaner cleans out all of your Temp and TEMPORARY Internet Files.  It deletes other things too (unless you tell it not to), but those are the two main concerns for me.  Also, with the Issues feature, you can find and remove a lot of rogue/obsolete registry entries.  It just helps out with cleaning things up a bit.  And don't worry, it's perfectly safe and won't delete any important files.  Use it a bit and I think you'll decide to keep it.

Solve : Recommended monitor resolution missing?

Answer»

My new widescreen Samsung monitor is a Syncmaster 226BW (connected analog).  This is my first widescreen monitor for my Windows XP system.

I installed the drivers and rebooted.

According to the Samsung specs, the optimum resolution is 1680 x 1050.  When I try changing the screen resolution, I don't get enough choices in the settings area.  The low is 800 x 600 (of course) and the high is 1600 x 900.

All the available resolutions are STRETCHED, most horizontally, one VERTICALLY.  So I'm not happy with any of them.

I'm stumped.  Could this be a video card issue?  The computer came out of a box several years ago -- I don't know what it's running.
What type of video card do you have?
Have you tried updating the Video Cards Drivers?

Possible causes:
Video card does not support the resolution
Generic Windows Drivers are being uses, and not the cards drivers, thus a lower possible resolution

I don't know what the card is.  Is there a way to find out without CRACKING the thing open?

Click Start > Run
type
dxdiag
press ENTER or click OK
then click the "Display" tab

Give us the information on that page, or take a screenshot and upload it at www.imageshack.us and give us a link Thanks for your help.  Here's what I've got:

That's the "System" tab.

click the "Display" tab

Oops.  Okay, here we go again:

(bump)BUMPING is bad manners. Have you installed the monitor driver that should be on the CDROM you got with the screen?
Click here to get your drivers.
You should download them, then uninstall your old drivers.
Then reboot and install your new drivers, then reboot again.
Hope this helps.I'm wondering if a 32M vid card will run that monitor...but i could be totally off base on that.

Samsung doesn't list that requirement in the manual.Probably need to set the aspect ratio. 16:10. The high resolution supported by the monitor is likely not supported by the video card.I agree with others that your onboard video may not support that monitor.  But, you might try accessing your BIOS to see whether it gives you the option to increase video memory to 64MB and, if it will, see whether that makes any difference in this matter. Thanks for your help, everyone.

Yes, I successfully installed the 226BW analog driver that came with the Samsung monitor.

As far as I can tell, the 226BW driver is showing up -- I can see it listed in the diagnostic and in my settings area.  I did try the "update driver" option and rebooted, but my resolution options did not improve.

How do I set the aspect ratio?  I've looked through the properties tabs but haven't found a reference to that.

Forgive me, but I don't know how to access the BIOS.

I consider myself a smart guy, but I don't know anything about computer mechanics.

Access/Enter Motherboard BIOS.  Do not change anything other than your video setting, assuming you find such an option in your BIOS.  Also, make a note of any change you make so that you can REVERSE it if necessary.

Solve : Windows Temp Folder problem.?

Answer»

I am running WINDOWSXP on a Sony Vaio PCG-FXA36 laptop. I try to KEEP my temp folders as empty as possible by running my disk cleaner often. I also go into my C disk and into the Windows folder to CHECK the Temp folder to see if it needs CLEANING. My problem is when I lay the cursor on the Temp folder icon to see the size of the Temp folder, it says the size is 670 MB, but when I open the Temp folder, it is almost empty. Where are the 670MB that it says are in the Temp folder?  Thank you.Hidden filesYou can go into Tools - Folder Options in Windows Explorer and select "Show hidden files and folders"

I double checked my folder options and I did have the computer set to show all hidden files and folders. The Temp folder still says 670MB is in the folder but what is seen inside is maybe 2MB total. Would it be ok to delete the folder and then re-add the folder? THANKS again for your help.

Solve : DVD/CDrom and CD-R. Did their souls join the family N the Matrix??

Answer»
DVD/CDrom TRAY opens and closes however it no longer RECOGNIZES any DVDs, CD, etc...  I tried resetting the BIOS, I've tried removing it and restarting... it stopped working after I rebooted it (hadn't rebooted in a few days).  Before the reboot I updated ITUNES and installed an game from 1996.  I've tried System Restore.  I cannot remove the game because to uninstall it prompts me to insert the games cd in the computer when of COURSE doesn't recognize it.  Help me guys

Number 2 - my CD-R is completely not working and hasn't for a while now.  It doesn't show up on the "My Computer" screen or in the device manager.  It did reappear once drive and all and worked for a short while then it all disappeared again and has worked since.

Is there any hope left in the universe for me ?  I beg of you oh woooo is me. Swap them into another  known working MACHINE one at a time to see if they have indeed passed on...

If so we'll do the Rites of Passage.

Solve : First full computer assembly plagued by random restarts.?

Answer»

Hi and thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I was recently given a hand me down computer and decided to frankenstein it together with some parts from my OLD computer. After installing everything I started getting random restarts and STOP errors so I've pulled a LOT of the parts and tried everything I can think of and everything I can find in any forum that might help so I decided to post here.

Here's the parts list

New Parts:
ECS GeForce6100SM-M Mobo
Antec TP3-430 Power Supply
H7650 Case

Parts from hand me down:
Amd Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2ghz
Sorry don't know RAM manufacturer but it's 1gb total
Seagate st3200827as 200 GB SATA HARD drive

Parts from old computer:
ATI X300 video card

Running Windows XP Pro SP2

After putting everything together the computer wouldn't even recognize my vid card so after awhile I opted to use the x300 since it recognized it. Everytime I would try to install the drivers I would get a zero service display error or something of the sort. Found a lot of info about nvidia chipset boards not taking well to ATI drivers so I uninstalled and ran driver cleaner pro. Everything is running off a fresh install at the moment, on a deep format of the SATA hard drive. Before when the random restarts happened there would be a listing for them in the EVENT viewer...now no such luck. So far everythings been running stable for hours at a time then it randomly restarts again. I thought maybe the cpu was getting too hot so after the last restart I checked it in bios and it was at 40. I also tried some 3rd party vid card drivers thinking maybe the drivers were the problem but it still hangs up. I don't know what else you may need to know the bios was flashed with the most up to date all drivers are up to date otherwise that I know of, and I just have no clue whats causing this.

Is the RAM COMPATIBLE with the board?

Have you run a memory test?Ram is compatible about to run windiag just now. Thx for quick reply.Ok so I just ran windiag for a little over 4 hours and still all is good with the ram. Any other ideas guys?

Solve : this is frustrating?

Answer»

I recently was trying to fix my moms computer, and I installed Windows 2000 over her stock Windows ME(she has an HP Pavilion), and now I am having a hard time getting her modem to work. Windows 2000 isn't even recognising her modem or something, becuase when I try to add the modem, it says windows can't find it. Windows isn't even detecting it as a plug-in-play device I don't think. So I can't add it manually because I don't know the name of her modem.

Also, I tried to put in her HP recovery disk after installing windows 2000 but now it is saying "RECOVER was Aborted", "Error no hard disk was found". Which doesn't even make sense because there is obviously a harddisk otherwise I wouldn't of been able to install Windows 2000???!?!

So if someone can please try to help me with figuring out why her modem is not showing up in windows that would be great. Or if someone could tell me how to get her HP recovery disk to work again that would be great too.

It's usually not a good idea to install one OS over the top of another...even if it is an upgrade...most of the time you end up with program or driver issues.

If you know th make and model of her computer, you can visit that manufacturer's website to download and install the drivers for the Windows 2000 operating system.

If it were me...I'd format the hard drive...as LONG as there is nothing she wants to save on her computer and do a clean install of 2000...hopefully we're talking legal version here.

If you can provide me with the make and model of the computer...I'll give you a LINK to download drivers for 2000.She has an HP Pavilion 8756C. Also it was a clean install, i formated her hard drive before installing windows 2k.

Thanks for the help!!You're welcome.

Here's a link to download the drivers for her computer, however the only available operating systems are 98, Me, XP and other Independent operating systems.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=58195&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=6&submit.x=3&lang=en&cc=us

You may want to try downloading the drivers for 98, Me, and XP and see if any of those work for 2000.

If we knew the make and model of your modem...it may be EASIER to locate the correct driver for your operating system.  This would involve turning off the power to the computer...unplugging the cables...keeping yourself grounded...open the case and remove the modem...see if you can find a make and model number on it and post it here.  If you're not comfortable doing this, I'd recommend have some more experienced do it for you...or thry the drivers for the operating systems recommended above.

Good luckI looked up the model number of her computer and it says it uses the Lucent Win Modem. What version though I don't know Is there any identifying label at all on the modem ? ?

Look on the back or bottom...

Or if there is an FCC ID# you can just type it into google and it will give you more info...patio...

I checked the Lucent drivers page here at CH...

Apparently you'll have to create an account to obtain the driver for it.

There are also other sites you can probably get it at, but again...you'll have to register.

The funny thing is...this a a standard modem driver that you can obtain from going to Windows update.

I gave it the old college try.I would try any Zoom modem driver that's matching the speed...back in the day they wrote the best drivers IMHO.Follow up...

Use the following link to choose a generic modem that comes close to the one you have.

If this gets you connected to the Internet, then visit Windows Update to download and install the latest driver installed on your computer...otherwise...GO out and spend about $15 (USD) for a new modem.  You can even find them cheaper online.Ok I just decided to reinstall Windows ME with her HP recovery disk. It said that I had to use FDisk to "prepare" the hard disk. I hope I did this right, first I deleted my old partition, then I had it create a primary DOS partition. Then I said yes for it to use maximum space.

I rebooted my computer and now the recovery program is running correctly(i think).

Am I using FDisk right?? You have erased the drive and prepared it for formatting.
However you can use the WinME boot CD to continue...

Solve : Changing email to Outlook ??

Answer»

Hi, I currently VIEW my email through Orange/Wanadoo home page email.   I want to changeover to Microsoft Outlook as I use it at work and its easy to use, but OBVIOUSLY don't want to lose my saved emails that I have in My Folder on Orange.

1. How can I change over to Microsoft Outlook, so that all emails to me come into that Inbox ?
2. How can I get my saved emails to the Microsoft Outlook box ?

thanks in advance

RussFirst...you'll want to configure Outlook with your USERNAME, PASSWORD and server settings for your mail account at Orange/Wanadoo.

Once this is done and you're able to use Outlook...test it to see if it sends and receives email with your Orange/Wanaoo settings.  If it can...then all you have to do is open your Webmail account on another PC and forward your saved messages to yourself while Outlook is configured and running on the other PC.

It is not a good IDEA to have a separate email client open and your web mail open at the same time on the same computer. Thanks for your reply, how do I configure Outlook please ??...I have checked all of the menus and there is nothing saying how to configure. Here are two links for information about configuring Outlook 97/98, 2000 and 2002.  Just substitute the GOES information with the information you need to obtain from Orange/Wanadoo.

http://home.goes.com/support/ol/index.cfm

http://home.goes.com/support/ol2000/index.cfm

http://home.goes.com/support/olxp2002/index.cfmDoes Orange/Wanadoo support access of POP3, IMAP, or HTTP Protocol emails?

Reasoning:
Most free email clients (web based) do not offer these options for free. Your provider must provide it for free before you can access your email via a client installed on your computer.

Solve : videos wont play any more?

Answer»

just RANDOMLY videos wont play anymore. this would happen before with just winamp and i would reinstall and never hear from it for 6 months but now ANY video file (avi, wmv, mpg etc) wont play on ANY player. this includes windows media player and vlc.

what do i do any error messages come with that?  Could be a service disabled in administrative tools.  Post any error messages you GET.  If it doesn't WORK on Windows Media, real Player, and OTHERS, then it is an issue that is in your computer and I can figure it out.  http://imgplug.com/uploads/opt1183142251u.jpgIs this the same computer you were having problems with icons in the start menu?

What Antivirus do you have installed?

Possible causes:
File association error... like, your Windows is so corrupt that its BEGGING for a reinstall.

Update your AVG and then scan with it in Safe Mode.  LET it clean whatever it wants.

Download HijackThis and save it to C:/Program Files/HJT.  Scan with it and post a log here for us to TAKE a look at.

Solve : How To Fix IP Banning On FireFox?

Answer»

I am trying to register on another website forum after being banned.
As I did, I was given this message

Quote

Our server has detected the presence of multiple IP connections from your machine, with one of the connections being an "Open Proxy" or "Blacklisted" IP. Connections of this nature are often used in order to abuse, spam or defraud. Registration is denied until these issues are resolved.

I have windows xp and use fireforx with verizon DSL.
I went to 'tools' clear private data.
Normally this and restarting the computer works, but this time it did not.

I wanted to know if any of you knew what I could do, if there was any configuerations I could do myself to resolve the IP trace, reset, or get a new one to allow me to be on that website undeteched.

Somebody said if I hold a key on the computer for 30 seconds the modem and IP address reset or if I pull the cord, but I have labtop.

Thanks. Are you using Google Web Accelerator?Never heard of it.Well, just TAKE a look at this. It's an old thread about changing your IP address through a batch file.

Also, in Command Prompt, look into ipconfig.

Quote

USAGE:

    ipconfig [/? | /all | /renew [adapter] | /release [adapter] |

              /flushdns | /displaydns | /registerdns |

              /showclassid adapter |

              /setclassid adapter [classid] ]

where

    adapter         Connection name

(wildcard characters * and ? allowed, see examples)

    Options:

       /?           Display this help message

       /all         Display full configuration information.

/release     Release the IP address for the specified adapter.

/renew       Renew the IP address for the specified adapter.

/flushdns    Purges the DNS Resolver cache.

/registerdns Refreshes all DHCP leases and re-registers DNS names

/displaydns  Display the contents of the DNS Resolver Cache.

/showclassid Displays all the dhcp class IDs allowed for adapter.

/setclassid  Modifies the dhcp class id.

The DEFAULT is to display only the IP address, subnet mask and

default gateway for each adapter bound to TCP/IP.

For Release and Renew, if no adapter name is specified, then the IP address

leases for all adapters bound to TCP/IP will be released or renewed.

For Setclassid, if no ClassId is specified, then the ClassId is removed.

Examples:

    > ipconfig                   ... Show information.

    > ipconfig /all              ... Show detailed information

    > ipconfig /renew            ... renew all adapters

    > ipconfig /renew EL*        ... renew any connection that has its

                                     name starting with EL

    > ipconfig /release *Con*    ... release all matching connections,

eg. "Local AREA Connection 1" or

                                         "Local Area Connection 2"

Do ipconfig /all and show what returns (it might show multiple IPs).The IP address is assigned by your service provider.....period.

Other than changing providers or contacting them directly there's nothing else you can do.

No amount of fiddling with ipconfig will change this.

What did you do to tick them off ? ?There is a point to being banned from forums, and attempting to regain access will only get your new account banned.

If you are wise you will listen to me:
You were banned. Returning and causing havoc will force them to do this:
They call your ISP or use other means to report you abusing your internet
From this point, one of two things WILL happen:
1) Your ISP shuts your connection down, you no longer gain access to the internet.
2) You receive a complete un-bypassable block from your ISP to that site

Dont give us webmasters grief, for the sake of the internet! I agree with Zylstra. I personally think that it is very irresponsible to give advice on how to get around forum bans. It could be this forum the guy spams next!

tberg224, you sound like a most undesirable character.
Just a quick note to everyone:
Its 3:50AM in the morning, when I replied to this thread, it was more of a stumbling of links that GOT me here.
This post was made June15... and its June 30 right now (on my end of this world it is at least)

For some strange reason, some people think its cool to cause drama on the internet....
Who knows
http://www.boreme.com/media/yr2006/crazy-mean-baby-1.jpgHow do I sound like an undesirable?
People get banned for a variety of reasons, some being purely subjective.
A large board didn't like my opinion of a sports team, one of the many moderators banned the account, and their policy is to not allow second chances, thus when they suspect a poster is an old one irregardless of why they were cut they ban.
I resent being labled undesirable.
Personally, I wouldn't want to go back to a forum if they banned me for something so silly.Well they aren't many good hockey sites out there.I'm sure you'll find a good one if you look hard enough.  You might even find a better one.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=hockey+forum

If you really want to return, though, you should contact an administrator and hope for the best.IMHO...I think this topic should be closed...

I agree with most members in this thread...if you've been banned from a forum...find another one.

Whatever you did to get yourself banned...I wouldn't recommend doing it on the new forum.  We learn by our mistakes.

We're not here to help you overcome an issue that you are TOTALLY responsible for.  To me...if we did assist you...we'd be responsible and probably held liable if you returned and caused any havoc. Was it your opinion that got you banned, or the actions you took while giving that opinion?
