The OP has been given various pieces of advice which he has EITHER ignored or failed to understand. Solve : Windows XP and 2000? |
Answer» When I boot up my computer it prompts me to either boot using windows XP or 2000 I'd like it just to run XP automaticly and delete the windows 2000 version where would I start to get rid of the second operating system? You need to edit your C:\BOOT.INI file. Post it on here and we will tell you what to remove. Wont advice to edit the boot.ini, as you will forever loose the 2000. You won't lose the 2000 if you make a copy of the old boot.ini to (say) boot.ini.old see here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022 Still, Never mess up windows boot files Quote from: vibhor_agarwalin on July 06, 2007, 07:04:06 AM Still, It's OK if you know what you are doing. What have you done on this so far? Exactly what happens when you see that screen? If you do nothing, the computer proceeds to boot under the DEFAULT OS after a set time, right? You don't need to actually remove Windows 2000 just to stop that screen from appearing. Just edit the boot.ini file (see the link contrex provided) Deselect the option Time To Display List Of Operating Systems. Of course, if you're sure you never want to use Win 2000 again, you might as well remove it from your hard drive to FREE up the space. |

Solve : Can't remove a program in add/remove programs? |
Answer» Hey everyone, I am on Windows XP. I recently had to do a system restore, and a PROGRAM I had removed (Verizon Internet Security Suite) came back onto the computer. Now I can't remove it in the control panel add/remove program function. I tried to MANUALLY delete it, but no go. I tried to use the TWEAK ui program, as suggested on this website, but I don't think it works for XP (can't find the add/remove tab). I tried to manually uninstall it through regedit, but it does not show up under the uninstall folder. I am out of ideas, and WONDERING if anyone has any suggestions. Thank you for your help. |

Solve : CONSTANT REBOOT PROBLEM XP home edition? |
Answer» Last night while playing an online game my laptop froze up. I ened up having to power it down via the pwr button. Upon reboot of laptop windows did a scan due to the sudden shut down of the pc. Upon completion of the 3 step scan there was a message that said something like unkown hard disc error. Not thinking i just resterted the laptop without writing down wat the exact message was. Since then my laptop will only get to the point that u can get into bios the n goes to a black screen with a single cursor in top LEFT corner and reboots. I have checked cmos, cleaned entire laptop inside and out, tried to find a hard drive diagnostics for Toshiba but found nothing. I would try to use system recover disk that came with the laptop but its now available due to the fact that I recently moved and my stuff hasnt arrived from bahrain yet. No original XP CD came with the laptop when i bought it in 2004, jsut the recover disc. Is there any site i can download a Win XP Home edition Recovery disc or perhaps a diagnostics program for my Toshiba MK8025GAS 80G Hard drive. And yes i can hit F8 to get to the options for Safe MODE/last know good comfig/Debug/normal mode....I've tried all and none work. They have same result with the laptop rebooting over and over and over. I have Nortan 360 on my pc and do regular scans every week. Im assuming the problem is either the Hard drive or XP. I would take the hard drive out of my laptop but due to the fact that I dont currently have a case that will adapt the laptop hard drive to the inputs of a regular desktop pc. My biggest fear is that im GOING to have to replace the hard drive which in turn will focre me to purchase XP since Best Buy/Circuit City (been so long i dont remember) never provided an original XP disc with the laptop and neither is the problem. Please give any info that could help with this issue. thank you I put a new XP disc in the Cd/dvd drive but i only get media failure message when it tries the boot from the drive. any ideas? What is the exact error message? The laptop reboots so i cnat quite get the messeage written down... Quote from: Emsc74 on July 05, 2007, 06:49:15 AM The laptop reboots so i cnat quite get the messeage written down...There should be a key SOMEWHERE on your laptop that says "Pause/Break" Press it right when the error message comes up. This should stop the BIOS from continuing on to the next boot device Possible problems: Incorrect Boot Order Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 082) Copyright (C) 1997-2000 INTEL CORPORATION For Realtek RTL8139(X)/8130/810X PCI FAST ETHERNET CONTROLLER v2.13 (020326) pxe-e61: Media test falure, check caple PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE Rom This it all it says when i try to boot form cd/dvd drive. I have the win xp disc in when i try this. Seems that is saying the drive isnt connected properly. It appears to be attempting to boot from your network If you know how: Enter your BIOS, and make sure that the CD/DVD drive is set to load before the hard disk drive (Then exit and save the changes) Or (better yet) If (when you start the computer) your BIOS screen shows a key to load a boot menu, press that key, and select the CD drive. This is a legal XP CD, correct? |

Solve : Blue screen with unknown code...? |
Answer» I recently uninstalled Google Toolbar and various other objects which i thought were of no relevance to the running of my Advent Laptop. I found that when I now turn on my Laptop it loads all the way to the WELCOME page then the Desktop, but within 30 seconds no longer I get a BLUE screen and the following code. Hey thanks, i read through the whole of that and divulged into a few other links but i am still curious as to what the code that was given means? The hex numbers in brackets are likely to relate to memory LOCATIONS and CPU registers and may well vary wildly from computer to computer. The first number is the significant one that will give the most information. Specifically, 0x0000008E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED A kernel mode program generated an exception which the error handler didn’t catch. These are nearly always hardware compatibility issues. Big list here http://www.aumha.org/a/stop.php Lots here to chew on http://www.google.co.uk/search?source=ig&hl=en&q=windows+stop+messages&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=t&oq=windows+stop+Ha ha thanks man... ill give them all go see how it turns out Ill let you know dont worry ha ha cheers |

Solve : Issue with my Hard Drive Free Space in WinXP SP2!!!!? |
Answer» Hi, I have a clue about my hard drive's free space in WinXP SP2, because the hard drive settings shows that the HD has 7% of free space, but I have been check all the files and folders (Including root folders and files) and I don't see the reason why it show me this info, my HD have 80 Gb of capability.. How are you checking the drive's free space? Have you checked out your temp folder? What free space is shown in My COMPUTER? How full is the Recycle Bin? Quote I think that I could format the HD and reinstall WXP... That's a bit drastic at this stage. |

Solve : Computer won't shut down...? |
Answer» Using my SIS's computer, she is on cable. Have used this computer before, but now when we try to shut it down the NORMAL way (Start...shut down..etc), it will not shut down. The only way it will actually shut down is to go to the power button and hit it. It runs very slowly, and are wondering if "someone/something" is helping us control this PC? It is an HP, Intel Celeron CPU 2.80 GHz, running XP V2002, SPz. Do I need more info? Hope this has been repeated, and we need lots of help, not computer guru's at all. Spent most of the day working on computer. Anti-virus was McAfee, I changed it to Avast, loaded up spybot, found a trogan horse, and then cleaned "AGAIN" files, and defragged. It is finally working better. Thanks for letting me submit the question, asking it of others made me think HARDER. Thank you so MUCH for being there to help us out. |

Answer» my xp home edition was working fine last night then all the sudden it reset. when it rebooted it got to the window load screen and then rebooted again this time taking me to the , choose between safe modes or as normal. i picked normal and it rebooted again when it got to the windows load screen. again it went to the choose safe modes or normal i choase safe, and it loaded up fine. once in safe mode i ran stop sign anti-virus, it came back with (from memory i didnot WRITE it down....win_95_nigor) and it removed and deleted it, then i ran disk cleanup, and after that i ran DEFRAG, all ran smooth. then i restarted system and same things happened again ,in normal mode it would still auto reboot at window load screen, and at safe it would work. so again in safe i (its a e-machine) did system restore from a WEEK back and still same problems.......finally i did an recovery where it backs up all info to c:backup and reinstalls the window xp os . that ran fine but now if i pick safe or normal mode it still constanly reboots every time it gets to windows load screen........................PLEASE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT CAUSED THIS AND OTHER THAN HIRING SOMEONE WHAT CAN I DO..........sorry not yelling just desperate.....also i pretty HANDY with computers, have built many at different times so any suggestions would be welcomed.------ps have family photos that are not backed-up and wife will kill if i dont at least recover those.there are several things that could be happening. bad ram, bad harddrive, bad motherboard, overheating and/or infection. |

Solve : 1A A VERY BIG PROBLEM? |
Answer» :'(WHEN I TRIED TO USE THE COMMAND OPEN WITH>CHOOSE PROGRAM... ON any OF MY APPLICATIONS A NOTEPAD POPPED UP AND IT comes up with some code! help um Windows xp pro SP2 To me, it sounds like your system is associating Notepad with your image files. Thus when you double click on an image file, WinXP loads it into Notepad. You need to change that file association. I assume you want to associate your image files with some image viewer program, not Notepad. Sorry, I don't have XP, so I can't step you through it. I'm commenting only because it looks like a couple of the above responses didn't catch on that all you need is to change your file association - and perhaps now somebody that does have XP will jump in here. Find an image file in Windows Elplorer. Right clik it and select "Open With" Scroll to the proper program and highloght it. Check the box at the bottom stating " Always use this program"ok il tell u the hole thing of whats happening when i double click an image - i dont get anything! when i select choose program to change it the "choose program Box" doesnt pop up only a notepad pops up with a code of the image i think all i want to know is how can i change this and is there any way i dont have to use choose program to change tihs!!! pls help! Are you right clicking the files, or are you using the "open with" OPTION on the Windows Explorer "file" menu? Solve : Process ImageWin3.exe? |
Answer» I'm using WinXP SP2, and this process is running at 50-51% constantly. It's ImageWin3.exe, and I don't want to terminate it if it's supposed to be running, but some of my other applications aren't working correctly. Does anyone know what imagewin3.exe is or what software uses it? It doesn't come up on Google. File C:\Program Files\TextBridge Classic\Bin\IMAGEWIN.EXE infected by "Virus.Win32.Tenga.a" Virus! have you got TextBridge scanning/OCR software installed? Did you get it from a legitimate source? Imagewin seems to be a component of many Windows imaging software packages, so it could be ANOTHER SIMILAR program. You should do a virus check pronto! HijackThis! is a good program to try as well as your normal anti virus software. (You do have some, and it is up to DATE?) How up to date are your security patches? You could try (1) stopping the process and see if it comes back after a reboot. (2) finding the executable imagewin3.exe by a Windows Search (enable find hidden files) and run a virus check on that folder. You may need to reinstall any software that was in that folder. (3) Run a complete virus check as a matter of urgency. Quote Tenga infects PE exe files. The virus can also act as a Network-Worm on machines with an unpatched DCOM RPC vulnerability. Microsoft Security Bulletin MX03-026 details the vulnerability. After launch, Tenga checks if the domain vx9.users.freebsd is available and attempts to dowload Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Small.bdc from http://**nt*.lycos.it/v**/dl.exe Tenga is a classic appending virus that increases the size of infected files by 3 KB. Quote also known as: W32/Gael, W32.Licum, Win32.Gael.3666, W32/Stanit (H+BEDV), and you can also upload the file to Virustotal and post a report backIt could be a legitimate file which has got stuck in a loop because something is wrong or corrupted. You could try stopping it and seeing what happens. What protection do you have? I'm not sure if you actually do have Tenga/Gael, but as a general rule of thumb...if a filename gets no results on Castlecops or Google, then it is most likely an infection. Even if the file isn't malicious, it's not vital, so you can end the process. But before you do that... Scan the file with VirusTotal like unlovedwarrior suggests (follow contrex's #2). Search for the file with Process Explorer and see what program the file is tied to. Download HijackThis to its own special folder and post a log here. Many of the files are safe and even vital, so don't make any changes until instructed to do so. |

Solve : Local Disk appearing as unknown (LINK TO PICTURE INSIDE)? |
Answer» It's been like this for a while, I really don't know why, never did anything to make it like this, I have an image I took using Print Screen. That folder is not the C:\ folder. It is the C:\Intel10.3 folder. Have you looked in your C:\ folder? nothing is in my C:/ folder that is as explained, only the intel one, is there no way to fix my problem? want me to take a screenshot of my C:/ folder?Yes.have you now removed all the autorun.inf files?# Thanks for staying with me everyone. Here's the pic of my C:/ folder http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/9615/cfoldersd2.jpg The only 2 autorun files i deleted were the READ-ME type ones, text ones, nothing autorun is in the C:/ folder so i didnt delete the green icon one thxWhen you took that screen shot, did you have "show hidden files and folders" enabled? Also, an autorun.inf file on a hard drive will do absolutely nothing useful whatsoever, no matter how impressive and important looking its icon may be. No matter what color its icon is. It should be deleted. If it is read-only it was probably COPIED over from the CD-ROM where it belonged. You could try this download tweakui from microsoft's xp website at the following location and install it. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx this should add a powertoys option to your start menu. in that sub menu launch tweakui. the last option in the tree on the left is repair. click it and the click the rebuild icons button on the dialog to the right. Quote from: contrex on June 30, 2007, 11:16:53 AM When you took that screen shot, did you have "show hidden files and folders" enabled? I tried that, and sadly it didnt affect my Local Disk. I looked under the tab and it said it repaired My Music, Font, Video, and Picture folders. I still did try twice. But thanks contrex for the continued help. I am open to anything please feel free to keep giving me ideas. Thank you. I'll be checking a few times each day. Thanks again! |

I think an annoying number of people just "shoot from the hip" that is, they read the original post and straight away fire off their 2 cents worth without even READING the replies, often duplicating advice already given and/or making themselves look ridiculous. It is good forum etiquette to READ ALL THE POSTS before diving in. okay - lookit - a full version - you cant "borrow" one , theyre all registered, and an unregistered copy of 98 or 2000 "cheep" is rare. btw - it did take 2000pro before i f$%&ed it up!!! look - its just "too *censored* old". i got all the booklets that came with it new. del. from dell, round rox, texas - 1 dell way. it came with 98, 333mhz pII proc., 64MB ram, 8 gig hd. and p&p devices removed exc. the 56k modem - i'll keep that. the one it came with. the proccessor, hd, and mainboard are of no use. i'll just take the modem and trash it! thanks for the advice guys!!! by the way - i found for 40 bucks a pIII 550mhz dell xps (top of the line!) 256 mbram 40 or 80 gig hd , i forget, and a xp sp2 upgrade cd! i can upgrade my win2xpro on my good pc with it! i got a power spec desktop, celeron 1.4 ghz proc., 512 mb ram, and a tiny 10gig hd. a 40 would be better!) and a dell 15' flatscreen monitor. (no crt here!) 100 bucks used fron a student on c-list. alot of good stuff cheap on there. thanks for the advice steve |

Solve : 1386file problems? |
Answer» I hope someone can tell me what this means. My computer said that I had a corrupt file and that I should run ChkDsK on my computer. Chkdsk won't run because all my 1386 files have no program associated with them to run them. What's up and what should I do?You shouldn't need the i386 files to run chkdsk..sounds like your Windows installation is corrupt. |

C:\Program.exe C:\Program Files\GameCP\wcm\bin\srvany.exe C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BWPlugProtocol-8876480.dll C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\GAPlugProtocol-8876480.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\ALCMTR.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\mscomserv.exe You don't have to delete the green files, but it is advised. Once you've done all of this, reboot into Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log so we can see if there's any other junk we need to clean up. Let me know how everything's running now and if you had any problems following my steps. Phew! I can definitely say I've never had a fix take up three posts! But don't worry, it's not as bad as it appears at first glance.I would suggest following this man's advice from what you're saying about all the stuff popping up in spybot and the avg thing you've got an infection something fierce. I don't know that'd I'd even go the hijackthis ROUTE if it's that bad I think I'd just do a fresh install of windows.wow ok to start off i just want to say youve been a great help and i really appreciate it. ok im about to do the things you listed but id like to know a little more before i start... the ALCMTR.exe which is for my 5.1 realtek sound card so i shouldnt get rid of that, right? and ive got an idea but what exactly will hijackthis do when i hit the "Fixed Checked" button? im just a little curious plus why exactly do i need the CCleaner and what does that do?? and to wicked: ya i would do a fresh install but when i do that it says it cant find any of my SATA hard drives and even when i get around that problem at the beginning after it restarts my computer it gives me the blue screen.... Quote from: llamas402 on July 01, 2007, 06:31:55 PM the ALCMTR.exe which is for my 5.1 realtek sound card so i shouldnt get rid of that, right?Sorry, I normally include a little description for this file, but I left it out. ALCMTR is related to Realtek, but it is not a necessary file. In fact, it is considered by many to be spyware. It's not malicious, but it does track certain activities and send the information back to Realtek. I suggest removing it, but you don't have to. Quote from: llamas402 on July 01, 2007, 06:31:55 PM and ive got an idea but what exactly will hijackthis do when i hit the "Fixed Checked" button?Good question. Basically, when you click on Fix Checked, HijackThis edits the registry entry and disables it. It doesn't delete files (although the prompt makes it sound otherwise) and it doesn't always even delete the registry entries. It pretty much just switches them off so the related file(s) won't run next time you boot your computer. Quote from: llamas402 on July 01, 2007, 06:31:55 PM plus why exactly do i need the CCleaner and what does that do??CCleaner cleans out all of your Temp and TEMPORARY Internet Files. It deletes other things too (unless you tell it not to), but those are the two main concerns for me. Also, with the Issues feature, you can find and remove a lot of rogue/obsolete registry entries. It just helps out with cleaning things up a bit. And don't worry, it's perfectly safe and won't delete any important files. Use it a bit and I think you'll decide to keep it. |

Solve : Recommended monitor resolution missing? |
Answer» My new widescreen Samsung monitor is a Syncmaster 226BW (connected analog). This is my first widescreen monitor for my Windows XP system. click the "Display" tab Oops. Okay, here we go again: (bump)BUMPING is bad manners. Have you installed the monitor driver that should be on the CDROM you got with the screen? Click here to get your drivers. You should download them, then uninstall your old drivers. Then reboot and install your new drivers, then reboot again. Hope this helps.I'm wondering if a 32M vid card will run that monitor...but i could be totally off base on that. Samsung doesn't list that requirement in the manual.Probably need to set the aspect ratio. 16:10. The high resolution supported by the monitor is likely not supported by the video card.I agree with others that your onboard video may not support that monitor. But, you might try accessing your BIOS to see whether it gives you the option to increase video memory to 64MB and, if it will, see whether that makes any difference in this matter. Thanks for your help, everyone. Quote Have you installed the monitor driver that should be on the CDROM you got with the screen? Yes, I successfully installed the 226BW analog driver that came with the Samsung monitor. Quote You should download them, then uninstall your old drivers. Then reboot and install your new drivers, then reboot again. As far as I can tell, the 226BW driver is showing up -- I can see it listed in the diagnostic and in my settings area. I did try the "update driver" option and rebooted, but my resolution options did not improve. Quote Probably need to set the aspect ratio. 16:10. The high resolution supported by the monitor is likely not supported by the video card. How do I set the aspect ratio? I've looked through the properties tabs but haven't found a reference to that. Quote I agree with others that your onboard video may not support that monitor. But, you might try accessing your BIOS to see whether it gives you the option to increase video memory to 64MB and, if it will, see whether that makes any difference in this matter. Forgive me, but I don't know how to access the BIOS. I consider myself a smart guy, but I don't know anything about computer mechanics. Access/Enter Motherboard BIOS. Do not change anything other than your video setting, assuming you find such an option in your BIOS. Also, make a note of any change you make so that you can REVERSE it if necessary. |

Solve : DVD/CDrom and CD-R. Did their souls join the family N the Matrix?? |
Answer» DVD/CDrom TRAY opens and closes however it no longer RECOGNIZES any DVDs, CD, etc... I tried resetting the BIOS, I've tried removing it and restarting... it stopped working after I rebooted it (hadn't rebooted in a few days). Before the reboot I updated ITUNES and installed an game from 1996. I've tried System Restore. I cannot remove the game because to uninstall it prompts me to insert the games cd in the computer when of COURSE doesn't recognize it. Help me guys Number 2 - my CD-R is completely not working and hasn't for a while now. It doesn't show up on the "My Computer" screen or in the device manager. It did reappear once drive and all and worked for a short while then it all disappeared again and has worked since. Is there any hope left in the universe for me ? I beg of you oh woooo is me. Swap them into another known working MACHINE one at a time to see if they have indeed passed on... If so we'll do the Rites of Passage. |

Solve : this is frustrating? |
Answer» I recently was trying to fix my moms computer, and I installed Windows 2000 over her stock Windows ME(she has an HP Pavilion), and now I am having a hard time getting her modem to work. Windows 2000 isn't even recognising her modem or something, becuase when I try to add the modem, it says windows can't find it. Windows isn't even detecting it as a plug-in-play device I don't think. So I can't add it manually because I don't know the name of her modem. |

Solve : How To Fix IP Banning On FireFox? |
Answer» I am trying to register on another website forum after being banned. Our server has detected the presence of multiple IP connections from your machine, with one of the connections being an "Open Proxy" or "Blacklisted" IP. Connections of this nature are often used in order to abuse, spam or defraud. Registration is denied until these issues are resolved. I have windows xp and use fireforx with verizon DSL. I went to 'tools' clear private data. Normally this and restarting the computer works, but this time it did not. I wanted to know if any of you knew what I could do, if there was any configuerations I could do myself to resolve the IP trace, reset, or get a new one to allow me to be on that website undeteched. Somebody said if I hold a key on the computer for 30 seconds the modem and IP address reset or if I pull the cord, but I have labtop. Thanks. Are you using Google Web Accelerator?Never heard of it.Well, just TAKE a look at this. It's an old thread about changing your IP address through a batch file. Also, in Command Prompt, look into ipconfig. Quote
Do ipconfig /all and show what returns (it might show multiple IPs).The IP address is assigned by your service provider.....period. Other than changing providers or contacting them directly there's nothing else you can do. No amount of fiddling with ipconfig will change this. What did you do to tick them off ? ?There is a point to being banned from forums, and attempting to regain access will only get your new account banned. If you are wise you will listen to me: You were banned. Returning and causing havoc will force them to do this: They call your ISP or use other means to report you abusing your internet From this point, one of two things WILL happen: 1) Your ISP shuts your connection down, you no longer gain access to the internet. 2) You receive a complete un-bypassable block from your ISP to that site Dont give us webmasters grief, for the sake of the internet! I agree with Zylstra. I personally think that it is very irresponsible to give advice on how to get around forum bans. It could be this forum the guy spams next! tberg224, you sound like a most undesirable character. Just a quick note to everyone: Its 3:50AM in the morning, when I replied to this thread, it was more of a stumbling of links that GOT me here. This post was made June15... and its June 30 right now (on my end of this world it is at least) Quote from: contrex on June 30, 2007, 04:36:52 AM I agree with Zylstra. I personally think that it is very irresponsible to give advice on how to get around forum bans. It could be this forum the guy spams next! For some strange reason, some people think its cool to cause drama on the internet.... Who knows http://www.boreme.com/media/yr2006/crazy-mean-baby-1.jpgHow do I sound like an undesirable? People get banned for a variety of reasons, some being purely subjective. A large board didn't like my opinion of a sports team, one of the many moderators banned the account, and their policy is to not allow second chances, thus when they suspect a poster is an old one irregardless of why they were cut they ban. I resent being labled undesirable. Personally, I wouldn't want to go back to a forum if they banned me for something so silly.Well they aren't many good hockey sites out there.I'm sure you'll find a good one if you look hard enough. You might even find a better one. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=hockey+forum If you really want to return, though, you should contact an administrator and hope for the best.IMHO...I think this topic should be closed... I agree with most members in this thread...if you've been banned from a forum...find another one. Whatever you did to get yourself banned...I wouldn't recommend doing it on the new forum. We learn by our mistakes. We're not here to help you overcome an issue that you are TOTALLY responsible for. To me...if we did assist you...we'd be responsible and probably held liable if you returned and caused any havoc. Was it your opinion that got you banned, or the actions you took while giving that opinion? |
