Solve : Windows Display Settings Help (Still) Needed?

Answer»

Hello, I'm new to this site and in need of some assistance.  On one of my computers, I noticed that I would have to scroll sideways to see all of the page at CBC News.  I clicked Control Panel and then changed the SETTING at which time the screen blackened and a little box began to FLOAT around stating that the optimum setting should be 1024 X 1280.  When it cleared up, I changed it to that setting and rebooted.  Now all I get is the blackened screen and the floating message noted above.  I can't EVEN get in to change it back!  It should also be noted that I'm not very proficient with computers and related lingo.

What was your original setting?  Try starting in Safe mode and changing your setting back to the original setting, while in Safe mode.  Then, try restarting in normal mode.  http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtmlThanks, when I tried to START in Safe Mode by hitting F8 and choosing it, I still couldn't get the desk top.  It went straight back to the black screen and the floating message.Sorry, I didn't answer your first question.  The original setting was the lowest one on the slider (seven hundred and something was one of the numbers I think).

Solve : Is there a limit to the number of files in a folder??

Answer»

I keep a folder with a lot of files names which are all in alphabetical order.  Today I noticed that all files with the name starting after "T" disappeared.

There's CURRENTLY 630 files totalling 83 mb.  I have Windows XP Pro SP2.  Is there a limit to the number of files in a folder?  The missing files aren't in the Recyle Bin.

I copied 10 new files to the folder, most of the files had names starting with A-M.  A couple of the files had names starting with T, and a couple more with U and W.  When I copied the new files, all those with A-M copied over, only some of the ones with T copied over, the U and W didn't copy over.  In addition, some of the orginal files starting with the name T were deleted.

I played with it some more and found that when I copy new files in, the ones at the bottom of the list are automatically deleted.   I select Undo, the missing files reappear, and the new files that were copied are deleted with a prompt.  I tried it again with a brand new folder with the same problem.  I tried it on a different HD with the same problem.

I tried the same thing but with a bunch of junk files.  I was able to get to 1100 files, but when the file count aproached 900, things started to really slow down.

I tried to run a Checkdisk, but Windows was UNABLE to complete the disk check.

The folder is on a internal IDE HARDDRIVE, that is partitioned 3 times.  The HD is NTSF.  The partition has 11.7 GB of free space.  Any ideas? This isn't normal what you can try is:
CHKDSK /F
And
SFC /SCANNOW
If it still doesn't work check if you haven't got ANI virus or malware that you installed lately.

Jonas Good news.  I ran a chkdsk /x off of a command prompt.  Some errors were found and fixed.  All of the missing files were found.  I don't know exactly what happened, but I'm glass to have the files back.  I copied the dos screen below.

D:\>chkdsk d: /x

Solve : Resolved: Blue screen of death - wont leave me alone?

Answer»

Computer specifications :
Brand : Dell
Model : Dimension 4700
OS : Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 version 2002.
RAM : 1GB
Processor : Intel P4 2.8 GHz
Note - I have had the computer for about 3 and a half years.

Problem :
At random times i get a weird ticking noise, then the blue screen of death.
It never used happen the first year i had my computer. I have reformated my hardrive
and reinstalled Windows for different reasons on different occasions. This hasn't changed anything.

Tell me if you need anymore information.

Ticking sounds.............I have in front of me a broken hard disk without the cover and when I spin it, there is a sort of ticking sound coming from the arm. Maybe your hard disk is dying.....but that's just a guess......

What are you doing when it starts ticking? Playing a game? Surfing the net?Its USUALLY random. The last couple of times i was surfing the net. Yesterday it did it because i opened lime wire.  Sometimes it happens when i'm not doing anything. I occasionally leave my computer on over night. 50% of the time i wake up and it has the blue screen. It  has gone from once a week (About 1 and a half ago) to 3 times a day (now).i've had lots of hard drives die and give me the blue screen before dying occasional times.... i had to back up my files immediately after i realised that's what it was. half the time when they did i didn't even get the chance to BACKUP, but it sounds like your problem is similar  i feel for you if it isYou said you've tried formatting and it didn't work... I don't KNOW what else might make a ticking sound...Its been going on for about 2 years. Getting better (not doing it for about a month), then getting worse (3 times a day), then better again. Right now its at its worst ever. Its really annoying. Dont you think it would have died by now? I might be able to check that place where windows keeps logs of stuff. If i can remember where it is  .

Edit: Event viewer. Thats what its called. I will check it now.yeah but the more hard drive activity there is, the more strenuous it is on the hard drive... if he formats it, that's strenuous, aggravating the problem if it is indeed the hard drive itself... has it gotten worse since it started doing this?i see.... so over all.. it's worse.. have any other hard drives? How about lets first check it is the hard drive.

Jahuro, open your computer case and turn it on.
(don't touch anything in case you give it a static shock)

Do something like open Lime Wire again and see where the ticking is coming from, then post back.I have a 20 gig hard drive which i took out of a computer at school which was in storage. I don't know how old it is. I don't know if its still works (Proberly not now that my dad has put his fingers all over it trying to figure out what it is). I don't know if it has anything on it. well try what *carbon* said and see if the other hard drives works if you think it is your hard drive  it wont really matter if a hard drive has been touched or not, i had one at a park as a soccer BALL substitute and it still  worked  Quote from: jahuro on June 19, 2007, 04:37:22 AM

K, i will do some other stuff as well to try and see if i can get it to freeze before i open the case. Most of the time something else was open as well. Example : Had firefox open, opened limewire. Let a search run. Clicked on firefox. It froze.Annoying it freezes when im in the middle of an assigment, but not when i open up limewire, msn and utorrent at he same time well you don't really need it to freeze just to have lots of activity, so opening things like massive WORD files, big pictures, and games does that well for me  Ive got a 7.5 mb gif file . Dont ask why lol.

Solve : computer restarts when starting up?

Answer»

Computer: E Machines
Model: T3256
RAM: 512
OS: Windows XP Home Edition service pack 2 2002 edition
Processor: 3200+ AMD Athlon XP
Note - had computer for about 2 years.

Problem:
Ok my computer is starting up normally showing the e trademark symbol and then it goes to the menu of safe mode and that whole thing, but whatever I click on it starts to load windows XP then all of a sudden a blue screen flashes less then a second (almost impossible to read what the message says) and the computer RESTARTS, if anyone can help me I would really appreciate it, THANKS!
ok when did this start?? can you boot into safe mode?? maybe related to heat.. use a can of compressed air to clean it out.. any new software hardware installed??to my knowledge it started today about 10 minutes ago, and no with all the modes (safe mode, last known configuration, etc) it starts to load windows xp and just flashes a blue screen then restarts, and to my knowledge no software was recently installed and definatly no hardware has been installed.ummm... did you try cleaning it out.. and theres no way to read the error message??

ok make sure everything is firming plugged in and setted... if that doesnt work then come back and we'll try something elseOk I'll try cleaning it out right now, and no the blue screen error message flashes less then a second (I even tried to take a picture of it so I could read it but its too fast.   and I'll also see if everything is plugged in, thanks so much unlovedwarrior for replying so quickly. Ok I cleaned it out, that didnt do anything, and I also made sure the plugs were firmly plugged in that didnt do anything either, and with safe mode a whole list of stuff pops up having to do with system 32/ I don't know if thats normal when you start up in safe mode, but about 10 seconds after the list shows up the computer restarts.your welcome ill be on for a while longer...

ok you need to go test your motherboard, ram, and harddrive

go to each manufacture and download their testing TOOLS..

but first try this...

unplug your computer discharge any remaining power by HOLDING the power button in for 30 seconds or so..

look for a little battery somewhere on your motherboard it looks like a watch battery..  take it out for a few seconds and then put it back in...

this will reset your cmos( i believe thats what it is)  and plug back in and retry

if that does work then try testing the things i told you to..ok so first I should hold the power button to discharge the remaining power then take out the cmos battery right? then test the hardware,? cmos just holds like date and time and boot up sequence right, I wont lose any files?you wont lose any files... but do the battery thing before you start testing the hardware because it can take for everOk I held the power button for 30 seconds with everything unplugged, then I took out the cmos battery and waited 5 seconds, put it back in then started it up it went to an info page about all the primary stuff and all that, I pressed F1 to continue then it went straight back to the safe mode menu, tried it and the same thing happens. Check the RAM with a free download at www.memtest86.com

Check the hard drive with free diagnostics at the appropriate drive maker's site.

More info is always helpful. See below.
I know this was asked but can you boot into safemode ? ?

If so go to Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery and uncheck"auto restart on errors" which is on by default.

Now the BSOD's will hang around long enough for you to write down the error message.

Post it here for further troubleshooting.how do I diagnose the hard drive and the memory if the computer wont start up?

and to Patio, the computer will not start up in safemode, a BUNCH of sysem 32/ files pop up and then it restarts.the link i gave is for the memory and go to your harddrives manufacture and dl the toolI know but how do I do that if the computer wont boot up?

Solve : CD Rom issues?

Answer»

:-?First post so I'll make it complicated :-?

I have an AMD 64 with Windows Xp 64 1gb ram

I trying to run 2 hard drives at the same time. Problem I can't seem to find the hard drive in My Computer. I have a 320 and a 80 gb EDIE hard drive Western Digital and The 320 is split in 2 127 and 170 but I can't find the 80 gb even after windows reads it and everything.

The CD rom now that's my main problem. Both drives WORK on their own and I can plug them up every single way and they work, but when plugged together neither one is reading (can't find them in My Computer)

I'm sure someone has had a problem like this one and no I not gonna put a list of all the specs   I don't have that much time anymore.
If I need to upgrade something then send me a link or at least a name so I can ebay it. Thank you Thank you your FAR to kind 8-).

Solve : computer restarting: ati2cqag.dll issue?

Answer»

hi, i currently am unable to start my computer except for in windows safe mode. when i try to boot it normally, it starts to load windows but then restarts before it gets to the log-in screen.  Windows reports an error
***STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x804EFFE5, 0F638881C, 0x00000000)
***ati2cqag.dll - Address BFA4090E base at BFA29000, datestamp 43fbd4d0
then something about a memory dump.
Anybody know anything?
Thanks
You sure don't give many details about your pc, not even the operating system..

This error is possibly tied into a problem with ram and appears when you try to start normally because normal startup uses more ram than in safe mode.

Here's one MS kb and altho' it deals with setup the diganostic advice is probably good for your system.

Good luckNope, without more pertinent info you are just SOL.

See below.thanks, i removed 1 stick of RAM as the windows help site told...so winxpsp2 loads now normally, but what exactly was the problem, is there a way to get back to 1GB of RAM, is it a hardware problem with RAM or motherboard? or is it a software issue? also the symantec antivirus no longer works. may or may not be related. sorry for lack of details.ati2cqag.dll (Central Memory Manager / Queue Server Module) is a component from the software ATI Radeon Family version 6.14.274 by ATI Technologies Inc.. ati2cqag.dll version 6.14.274 has a file size of 196,608 bytes, and is most commonly found under the directory "system32" with a creation date of February 22, 2005.

Sounds like a video problem.new problem: when i try to envoke another monitor via s-video windows crashes. i have an ati radeon 9800 pro and i just installed the newest drivers on it. the error reads
***STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xBF854635, 0xB78CC7d*, 0x00000000)
*** win32k.sys - Address BF854635 base at BF800000 Datestamp 43446058
any ideas? Now swap the ram sticks (remove the one installed and re-install the one already removed), reboot and try Symantec again.

Re-install your video card drivers...

patio.  8-)From the little info you have provided , i would say its a problem withe the video Card.
But thats just a guess.

Any way , my advice is , remove The ATI Gfx Card, Get 1 Can of Accelerante , Douse the Card Liberally Apply Heat Source (Must be at or above Combustion Reaction temperature of Accelerante ) Do a pagan Fire dance proclaim your loyalty to Mars.

And whey you've done all the GO By a 7 series Nvidia GFX card, On paper Nvidias are not as Good As ATIs , in Bench Marks they are not as Good, But in Life in the Real world they are much More Stable IMHO.i've re-installed drivers, etc. is the problem maybe the motherboard because there was a problem with both the RAM and the video card or is it all just video card related? Quote

there was a problem with both the RAM and the video card or is it all just video card related

No one can know.

Diagnose the RAM.The best way to problem solve is to examine only one variable at a time. THat is why the suggestion to test the RAM first. If it is OK you can proceed.I do agree, Test the Ram, its always a good IDEA to rule out your posible problems, and MEMTEST86 is free.

And after that we can get back to the Burning ^.^, even if the GFX card works Burn it any way.. i like fire

Solve : BSOD Occurring Daily?

Answer»

Could someone help me out?  In the last 6 months I would occassionally get a BSOD.  Mostly they would happen not long after I booted up and mostly random stop messages. Once rebooted there was no problems for a while.  I didn't know where to start with the problem and because they were infrequent I never got around to doing anything about it.

In the last 2 or 3 weeks they are a daily occurence and they are mostly stop: 0x08E referring to the file win32k.sys.  I did some reading at microsoft and see that this usually points to bad ram or a driver problem.  Now they usually happen in the afternoon but the one this morning was a completely different message.

I really don't know where to go from here.  I would really appreciate any help thanks.
Deb

A little backgroud to the problem:
My computer is about 4 years old, about 6 months ago my power supply died and took out my motherboard as well.  We decided to buy a new motherboard and power supply instead of upgrading to a new computer.  About 12 months before the new motherboard was installed I bought a new DVD burner (replacing the old cd burner), and the 2 new sticks of ram (replacing 256mb single stick), a web cam,  new 200gb harddrive and a usb hub. Also upgraded to broadband (so new modem) As far as I know there was no power surge, and the power supply seemed to die slowly.  It would occassionally click but I being inexperienced didn't realise that this was probably the fan not working properly. Despite all these additions my tech guys never mentioned that perhaps I should have a LARGER power supply, I don't know what it is without looking but they said it was exactly the same as the one I had before.  Before the motherboard/power supply went caput I had no BSODs, and nothing that idicated any problems to me.  The system worked well for the 6 - 8 months prior to the new motherboard/PSU being installed.

This is the Specs:
CPU: Intel P4 1600MHz
Motherboard: Asus P4S800-MX SE
RAM: 2 sticks 512mb PC3200 DDR SDRAM
HDs:  C: is Seagate ST340810A  (40 GB, 5400 RPM, Ultra-ATA/100) 30% free space (master)
F: is Western Digital WDC WD2000JB-00GVC0  (186 GB, IDE) 16% free space (slave)
Network Adapter: SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter  (10.1.1.2)
BIOS version is:AMI v1006.002
CD ROM: SONY CD-ROM CDU5211
DVD Burner: SONY DVD RW DRU-800A
Scanner: CanoScan D660U
Printer: Canon S520
OS: winxp home sp1 & 2

I have tried:
reseating and swapping the ram over in the two slots
scanning with Memtest (3 or 4 passes with no errors found)
I have downloaded the latest audio and display drivers but when trying to update it, says it can't find any newer versions when pointing to the newly downloaded drivers.
I tried to uninstall/reinstall the drivers from the new motherboard cd but a message told me there was an error but no other details.
I have done a checkdisk/diskcleanup/defrag
I have up-to-date virus and SPYWARE definitions and scan daily with avg and weekly with pestpatrol/adaware
I have scanned with housecall and pitstop.

Stop Message:
page fault in non paged area
stop 0x0000008E (0xC0000005 x 0x424DCD62 x 0xF2FACC64, 0x00000000)
win32k.sys
address: BF965202 base at BF800000 datestamp 43446958

The page fault bit is not always present, the stop message itself has been fairly consistently 0x0000008E of late but has been different occassionally.  The win32k.sys has also been fairly consistent but not always, the address is usually in the same or similar place.
Have you tried booting with just one ram stick (256mb) installed and swapping them :-?www.memtest86.com has a free RAM tester. Run the test on each stick individually for about an hour, then all together. You'l know soon enough if this is the issue.  Diagnose HDD and RAM.
Thank you I will try with memtest again on each single stick of ram.
DebOkay so I have tested the ram sticks individually.  One comes up with 40 errors after 5 passes of the test (just over an hour scanning).  The other comes up with 4488 errors after 5 passes.

I have a few questions:

-Do you think this is likely to be the major thing causing the BSODs?

-Does "good" ram have no errors at all?

-Do you think that when my PSU and motherboard died that it is probably likely the ram was damaged too?  And they didn't think to test it at the time?

-If not can ram go bad without anyone mucking with it, in otherwords for no reason even if it hasn't been tampered with/moved etc.

I realise that these questions are somewhat like asking how long is a piece of string, but I am annoyed that I've only just bought the ram recently/that it's just out of warranty.  I know new ram can be bad.

Thanks again, at least I know what is going on.

That's how you learn. Some cheap RAM can be bad from the beginning too. I have never had any RAM go bad in my 20+ years just as a result of time. Where did you get it? www.crucial.com and some others offer a lifetime warranty, reasonable (not the cheapest) prices and guaranteed compatibility. Saving a few bucks initially is not always the best investment.

Thank you so much.  I have my old 256 ram in at the moment (4 years old previously no probs) I haven't memtested it yet but apparently when I went out we had another BSOD but husband didn't think to write it down and I can't see anything in the event log.  Do you think the BSODs could be generated by faulty ram slots or is that not possible.  Just trying to work out what I will do.

I think I will wait to see if it happens again or test this old ram to see if it also has errors before I actually go ahead and buy new ram.  I bought the 512 sticks from my local computer shop it's "Elixir" and made in Tawain.  I didn't think it was "cheap" when I bought it at $90 (Aussie dollars) each but perhaps I should try to buy a more well KNOWN brand.  I wish I had a friend to swap ram with lol!

Thanks so much once again I really appreciate the advice!! Quote

Slots don't usually just go bad, although it CAN happen. If there was no physical activity in the case I doubt it. Sometimes the RAM ends can get tarnished, but either appropriate cleaning OR just putting them in 3-4 times correctly and blowing out the slot with a little compressed air can remove the residue and solve the problem.

RAM should always be tested one stick at a time in the slot nearest the CPU, then all can be put in for further testing.

Solve : Buffers when trying to run old games?

Answer»

Hi all.

Bit of a rookie when it comes to computers and im having trouble installing and running XCOM APOC. The only problem it states is my number of files and buffers is DIAGNOSED by the install program as 40/0 when it needs to be 20/20. It SUGGESTS editing my config.sys file as required but the config.sys has no text in it whatsoever.

How may i change the files and buffer numbers or is there something else i have to do?

The game runs through MS-DOS but i have windows XP home edition.

any further info required just ask as i dont know what is important.

Hoping someone can help me get back to my retro gaming. Thanks Quote

I have no idea about xcom apoc, but I do have a general idea of your problem.

It lies with WinXP when it comes to running dos programs. As you noticed config.sys just can't be edited. There's
%SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\CONFIG.NT
there instead, but there's little hope that messing with it is going to make it.
Same goes for WinXP compatibility mode, available from the program's properties tag : it works if EVER for Win9x applications, not for dos ones.

The best solution to this known issue, which really affects every dos programs, games etc. is imho to use an emulator like DosBox.
This TOOL creates a complete virtual dos environment within windows (no need to reboot, or special tricks) one that you can launch and then use to install and run any dos programs you want.
Well, almost. Not all applications are supported.
Go here for further details
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1
and don't be too afraid, for a rookie you may well be, but these things aren't so hard to work out after all   DOUBLE POST

Really, only one is necessary and more than that can be confusing to all. Do you want me to lock this one or the other? Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately i dont think my system would have a hope with DOsbox. just like the games im trying to run its a little bit old. 500Mhz pentium 3. the infuriating thing is im sure ive played this game on this machine previously but it was uninstalled by my brother when he was cleaning the computer. (hes much more clued up than me).

yes, I guess P3 500 MHz may make things real slow in dosbox

another chance is using VDMSound (soundcard emulator for WinXP, and it sure doesn't have so high hw demands as dosbox does) to start configuring sound setup and then.. see if it gets started anyway without dosbox  8-)

yeah, but I'm afraid installing Win9x after (or if you prefer, over) a WinXP installation is far from being a simple task...  :-/

Solve : Deleting a partition and reinstalling is not worki?

Answer»

My problem is much like the LoneSniper (if that's spelled correctly). I have a Dell Dimension 3000. I recently downloaded a nasty Trojan through MSN Messenger that read "I have pics of us, would you like it on Myspace or Facebook." I tried reinstalling xp and things have gotten worse. When booting only my WALLPAPER APPEARS and the icons flash on the screen for about three seconds. After that it goes to the BLUE SCREEN of DEATH and says..............

-Problem detected windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. and begins dumping physical memory.-

I put in my Reinstall CD provided by Dell which is the XP Service Pack 2 cd. And like the LoneSniper I get nothing out of my computer, even after checking BIOS.

SSSOOO! I went into Safe mode with Command prompt and tried to delete the partition, which I APPARENTLY have three of using some advice I gained from Microsoft TechNet. It will not let me delete the partition, any partition, even after I select it  and type delete partitionn.

Any suggestions? I have 2 friends majoring in IT and both can pull off Linux and C+++ but they both are stumped with this one; as am I.

Quote

I get nothing out of my computer

You get 'nothing' of your computer? Clarify, please. To delete the partition you have to boot your computer with a bootable cd (like that with windows on it). Your reinstall cd... It is a windows, a complete windows kit or just the update Service Pack2? What about Dell's manuals of reinstalling the Windows?Or the Dell support site, if that is really a "stumper".

I really think we should make the 'google is your friend' non sense STOP, this man asked a polite question and all you had to do was answer. It's not like he was ranting on like an idiot or being completey incoherent so he doesn't deserve to be told 'Go Google' unless he was a complete pain in the *censored*. Which he isn't.

The next one who says "use google" is going to be cracked down on hard by me if I deem the situation unfit. Yeah, vigilante justice! [smiley=cry.gif]And I had thought "Oh good, Raptor's back"...

I agree that the OP was not in any way offensive, neither do I think my response was, so calm down Rap, get down from your ivory tower.... and above all, SMILE upon us who have not yet reached your lofty standard... [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]I'm not speaking from an ivory tower, if my opinion makes you think I've got HIGHER standards than you do, WELL then that's your problem. I'm just voicing my opinion.

Solve : corrupt local profile??

Answer»

When I turn on my desktop (Dell, WINDOWS XP) it seems to start normally then a popup says:
"windows cannot load locally stored profile, it will use a temporary one. possible cause of this error include insufficient security rights or corrupt local profile".  I then see all my documents and everything they have all gone and the computer is like how I first got it with a few exceptions (my QB 2005 is still loaded & up to date, for example).  I haven't loaded anything new in a while EITHER.  Although it is making an odd sort of grinding sound from the tower every few minutes.  Help...?
"I then see all my documents and everything they have all gone and the computer is like how I first got it with a few exceptions"

You're looking at a profile that has nothing setup on it, like your profile until you STARTED to CUSTOMIZE it.  If you logon as administrator you / can create a new profile / copy all your stuff (desktop, shortcuts, favorites, etc.) to your new profile / reboot to that new profile.

Solve : 2003 blocking older clients with smb signing?

Answer»

Is there anyone who may have found a WAY around Microsoft's ingenius idea of blocking older clients from connecting to a 2003 domain?  Until now, I have always created a scripted BOOT disk to deploy windows to my clients.  This is simply a WIN98 boot disk with a batch file to authenticate and download the client software.  Now that microsoft has decided to block this "Security risk", I'm left to discover a new means of deploying the client.  My client DESKTOPS do not have cdroms, so my only choice is SYSPREP and RIS, or by using a floppy.  Unfortunately, the domain admins are not ready to use RIS.  So they leave me the choice of using a floppy.  If anyone should know what I'm talking about, Please, I'm all ears.   :-?

Thanks. The domain has to be set up in Mixed Mode when you first set it up, you can not change to mixed mode after Setting up the domain.Thank you for your suggestion.  Because I have this issue, the domain must not be in Mixed mode.  Anyone else have any ideas of how to go about deploying windows?  I am STILL WORKING to find a way to use an XP boot disk which is suppose to have the necessary security files.  Anyone?ok I'm a Little confused,

You want to put win 98 computers on the Domain, So you made it Native mode?
Thats does not Compute.

Can you Try to Explain Exactly what it is you are trying to accomplish?

If you are simply trying to install windows on the computer , you could set up one of the windows Server as a Network Boot Host , and the Create a Network Boot CD for Each client Computer. Then you would be able to install of the network.

IF you want to do this i could look up the specifics for you, Ive only done that in collage.

Or you could make a Norton Boot CD, and copy an Image off the network or course you need to make an image first.

Solve : Core duo??

Answer»

Hi,

I am planning on spend some money to GET a decent computer, but have some questions about what to get.

There is such a hype for the dual core cpus, just how practical are they. Aren't most softwares out there designed for just a single core? Don't they have to be re written to take advantage of the dual core? If I have two programs RUNNING simutaniously, does dual core mean that one program use one core and the other program uses the other core? Does it mean I have to buy  new programs that are designed for dual core to take advantage of it?

What if I buy a PC with a 3.0GHz or higeher single core, how would that work in compareson to a dual core? Is dual core really that much faster to WORTH the money?

I use my computer mostly for work and I am not a big GAMER. Just what to know I don't unwisely speand more of my hard earned money on a feature I can't use.

Thanks a lot.

Bayern.Pretty soon that will be all that is available. You are right on all of your assumptions. The Semprons do just fine but the whiz bang duo cores are only a few HUNDRED dollars more.

Solve : Enter Network Password?

Answer»

I have  Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600), IE6, SP2;Dell Inc. Dimension 4700;3.20 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4; 504 Megabytes Installed Memory;79.97 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity;  68.35 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space

In Tools, Internet Options, Programs, I have the Email set to Yahoo Mail.   Yet when I go to File, Send Page by Email, I get a box that says Enter Network Password.   I enter my Hotmail user name and password, as that is the only entry that will work.  If I ener the Yahoo Mail password, it returns to the Enter Network Password box.  How do I get the computer to recognize to send as Yahoo Mail?   And how do I keep that message box from coming up?

This started about a week ago.  Before, when I would go to File, Send Page by email or Link by email, it would take me to that email’s (whichever one I had selected in Tools, Internet Options, Programs) compose page.    But now I get this Enter Network Password box (which will only accept my Hot Mail password and takes me to the Hot Mail compose page) and do not know why.   I must have done something wrong.   I have restored to a couple of different dates, but did no good – still get that box.   I have scanned, using both the fix errors and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.   Still get that box.  Also, I have put in my Windows disk to check protected Windows FOLDERS.   But did no good.   Doing all of the foregoing, I may have messed up more.   Computer works very good, though.   Just want to get rid of that Enter Network Password box when I go to File and Send, so I will be taken right to the compose page of the email.

Thanks much.   Anna Ruth
.
From what i know Yahoo Mail won't operate as a POP3 mail client without a third party program such as YPops...Thanks much, but not familiar with YPops.  (I am a 72-year-old LADY with some computer smarts, but need much more. )   How do I do that - the YPops?

Have to SCOOT to the doc's.   Will check back later.   Thanks again.Go to control panel, double click internet options. Under the programs tab, set your default mail client to whatever you wish. Thanks, Sweetie.   I have done that.   It has been set at Yahoo for a while.   But still when I go to File and Send, I still get that Netword password box. You might have to do a work around. Look for a folder called SendTo and open the folder. There should be a shortcut called Mail Recipient. It will likely only point to MAPI email but it should bring up your default mail client. If it does not, create a new shortcut in the folder and point it to your Yahoo mail client. Once the shortcut has been created, whenever you click on Send To, Yahoo mail will be one of the options.
Just for fun, while you are at it, make a folder called *censored*. In the SendTo folder create a shortcut to the *censored* folder. It will appear as an option when you click on Send To and you can send things to *censored*. It can be fun when your friends are around and you send somrthing to *censored*.Thank you, 2k.   Printed this and will work on it tomorow sometime.   Getting tired now so off for a SHORT walk, then to beddy bye.   Thanks.   Will let you know if it works.   If I do not get back within the next couple of days, I will soon.   I am a caretaker, too, so have a lot to do. Went to Search and keyed in SendTo..   There were four of them – C:\Documents and Settings.   One with \Ann, one with \def.   One with C:\Windows\System32\config, and a Windows logo:   sendtopic.png in C:\documents and settings/Ann

I went to the Documents and Settings\ann.   Clicked on Mail Recipient and got a message that Windows could not open the file: Windows has the following information about this file type. This page will help you find software needed to open your file.

Description: Windows does not recognize this file type

There was a Yahoo Mail folder when I pressed the Mail Recipient, but it is empty.

I was greeted with a Scan Disk error. It tried to check my disks but then it says "an UNSPECIFIED error occurred." I booted into safemode and was able to run chkdsk and it found nothing wrong. After running it again with the fix all errors OPTIONS, it says it cannot lock that disk. Then I ran chkntfs C: /C and it says that Ntfs is dirty. How can this be fixed ? Solve : Gap in Add or Remove Programs list?

Answer»

When I OPEN Add or Remove Programs from the Control Panel it shows 5 programs at the top but I have to scroll way down to see the remaining programs. How can I get RID of this gap in the alphabetical listing of the programs install on my computer.hope this can helpDo you have Autocad on this machine ? ?I ran X-setup and found several dozens of this line, each slightly different. The lines aren't between the two programs where the gap is but rather at the beginning of all the Add or Remove list.  The words (No display name) preceed them all. What do you suspect they all are? Looks to me like some kind of install shield that didn't clean itself up very well. Would it be safe to remove them all?

(No display name) RunDll32 C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\engine\6\INTEL3~1\Ctor.dll,LaunchSetup "C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{EE6699B3-E5AD-4E59-8F2B-207DF630670C}\setup.exe" -l0x9  /remove

Notice the word remove at the end. Some have removeonlyYes I have AutoCAD 2006. Have had it for around 6 months. Haven't had any problems with it. this might help Quote

1. Start the registry editor
2. Select [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE]-[SOFTWARE]-[MICROSOFT]-[WINDOWS]-[Uninstall]
3. Back up the Uninstall branch (step 2) by exporting it to your desktop
4. Open the Add/Remove programs control applet. Note the last good display name in your Add/Remove program List. Then close the control panel applet.
5. Go back to the registry editor. Find the program uninstall key from step 4 above in the registry. (Using only the branch in step 2) Select the NEXT uninstall key.
6. Delete the uninstall KEYS one at a time until you find the offending uninstallation routine. After each deletion, open the Add/Remove programs applet and look at the display to see if it is fixed. Remember to CLOSE the Add/Remove program window before deleting the next key.
7. When you find the correct key, make a note of it.
8. Your problem is not fixed if you deleted some GOOD registry entries. At this POINT you MAY have deleted BOTH GOOD and BAD registry entries, depending on how lucky you were.
9. The next step explains how to restore the registry to it's prior state.
10. Close the registry editor. Right click on the file you saved in step 3. Select Merge.
11. Your registry is now back to where it was ORIGINALLY.
12. Now open your registry editor and select the key from step 7, and delete it. Your problem should now be fixed and all good entries intact.

Solve : Re : Windows File Listing Detail - 'Date Created'?

This is a question :

Query re "DATE created" and "date modified"

If a folder of many files be it Microsoft Excel Files and or MS Word files have been burned  on
the same date to a CD; the list of files specifies that the "date modified" is the date that the folder of files were

burned to the CD.

I know that it is possible through File then Properties to see the "date created" of each individual file once the file

has been OPENED, but what I am LOOKING for is a way to see a list of the files with the original "date created".

1.      Is there any way in which one can see the list of files  (ie through Windows Explorer) a listing of the file name

with the original "date created"?

2.      Is there a way of doing this in Windows XP or another verion of Windows?

Solve : "Invalid Drive Specification" when trying to find CD drive in command prompt?

Answer»

Seeing as how Microsoft doesn't tell you where to find any of the files they listed, I'll see if I can get any help here.

I have an extremely old Windows 98 IBM Thinkpad 600 laptop. (It pretty much stopped working after a 192 error message, but that's another story.)
Windows 98 started to have these problems when I booted it up:

  • Every 5 minutes Explorer had an "Illeagle Operation"
  • Whenever I used Windows Explorer (to look at FOLDERS) it would remain blank and not display anything.

So now I am going to try and reinstall Windows 98, since I don't have anything to loose on the laptop. So here I am in MS - DOS mode, and I'm trying to access the CD ROM drive in my laptop. I know that the drive letter should be D:, but when I type that in, MD DOS always replies, "Invalid Drive specification". I even tried what someone had reccomended earlyer by going one letter down to E:, but that still didn't work.

So if anyone has any answers to this problem, that would be greatly appreciated. (Not to get off topic, but if anyone can explain why I keep getting a 192 error when booting up my laptop, that would be great.)

P.S. I can only use one drive at a time; floppy or CD. I have to shut down my laptop and insert the drive to be able to use it.

Thanks in Advance!click 192 errorWell, I already knew it was a fan error, but the fan works prefectly well.1. Measure the voltage of the backup battery. If the
voltage is not correct, replace the backup battery.
2. Fan
3. System board

Did you bother to check anything besides the fan? Battery voltage? Diagnostic?Yes, I did read it.

I'm very certain it isn't the fan.
Could be the system board.
How do you measure the voltage?Remove the battery and test with a VOM (volt-ohm meter).Well, I apologize for asking so many questions, but can I use that on a normally battery tester? I'm pretty sure I don't have one of the things that you suggested.Depends on the battery tester - If has a digital readout and is capable of testing the correct voltage range. The voltage should be +/-5% of the battery's rated voltage. Slightly higher is always better than under.Well, the batter tester is a hang-on-the-wall battery holder, but it comes with a little tester. I'm afraid that it's only meant to test batteries such as 9 volts, AAs, etc.

Anyways, do you think I should just buy a new battery?Umm... Well, I still need help on MS DOS saying that D is not a valid drive... QUOTE from: thegammingperson1994 on June 12, 2007, 06:49:38 AM
Umm... Well, I still need help on MS DOS saying that D is not a valid drive...

You will need to use a bootdisk for Win98SE with CDRom support to do so...DLoad from bootdisk.com..

At the A: prompt after booting type D: and hit Enter. Then type setup and hit Enter and the Win98 setup should start.
( Some bootdisks make R: the CDRom drive so if D: doesn't run use the above instructions with "R:"...) Quote from: thegammingperson1994 on June 11, 2007, 04:30:30 PM
P.S. I can only use one drive at a time; floppy or CD. I have to shut down my laptop and insert the drive to be able to use it.

Remember, I can only use one drive at a time

Anyways, I think I fixed the problem by reformatting my hard drive, but I'll post again if it isn't fixed.Did you try the above suggestion ? ?Once again, I can't access D: without it giving me an "Invalid drive specification" error. Second, I can't even have both floppy and CD in my laptop at the same time.

P.S. I have also tried A-Z in drive letters. Same thing.Return to bootdisk.com and DLoad the file that will create a Win98 bootable CD and follow all the instructions...

Solve : font has changed?

Answer»

alright, so my computer was acting up last night, and i eventually got over that, and i got the "Microsoft has recovered from a serious error" message and all that, but i've noticed that all the fonts are different now, such as in the taskbar, or the icons on the desk, and most noticeably in a browser or windows explorer window. any ideas? right click on desktop go to properties appearance yeah no luck there, i had already tried that as well as changing the entire theme.what was going on with your computer before this happened??

what windows do you have??

what protections do you have??

have you installed any new software?? or hardware before this happenedit just shut off last night and wouldn't load windows.

recently, i had 512MB (2x256) of ram, and i bought 1GB (2x512MB) that i stuck in there along with it. i fixed the PROBLEM by taking out the 2 256's, because before that all 4 sticks were in. it was working FINE before, i set them up okay i THOUGHT, but the computer seemed to not like it.

anyway, i have xp media center, and i haven't recently (in the past month after the ram upgrade) done anything hardware- or software-wise to my machine. i hope that helps too.what anti-malware protections do you have?? has your homepage changed to something else recently without you doing it??no, all's fine there. i have ad-aware and avg that i keep up to date.ummm... try a system restore.i do believe that fixed it. do you think its a GOOD idea to leave that ram out, or try putting it back in now?i dont think the ram is causing this.. if it was then you wouldnt be able to log on at all..well then it was a very huge coincidence.yea dl superantispware and spybot search and destroy

update all protections reboot in SAFE mode and do all scans report back what they find and remove..alright, in the process of downloading/installing these programs, the font went weird again, so i'm going to run checks in safe-mode right now.kunlovedwarrior, now that's what I'd call a brief response.  Can't get much briefer than that.

Solve : In XP?

IM USING WINDOWS XP....   i have Created ONE user ACCOUNT...

I disable my administrator account type.

Now i need ENABLE  my Administrator Account from user account....

How can i Enable  What, EXACTLY, did you do? Quote from: naga03ece on June 13, 2007, 12:46:50 AM
I disable my administrator account type.

Now i need ENABLE  my Administrator Account from user account....

Only an Administrator can delete or disable a user account in Windows XP, so it seems you used another account that has Admistrator privileges in order to do this.

Use that account, or create another for yourself.

I recommend only one user having Administrator privileges and set all other users with limited privileges.First, log out. Then hit control-alt-delete two times. The log on screen will turn to a small window labeled "Log On to Windows". Then type "administrator" in the user name BOX. Enter the administrator password. Hit enter. (NOTE: if you didn't set up a password for admin, it may not need one)

Solve : Monitor View?

Answer»

My mom (who is computer illiterate) was playing with my LAPTOP and now the view on the monitor went from full screen (what I like) to centered with black on the right and left.  How do I fix this?  Help?Check the resolution.  Try setting it to 1024x768.

Alan <><  That doesn't work, it just makes the font smaller.Try BOOTING into Safe Mode (F8) when the computer starts, then go into Device Manager and remove all the Monitors / reboot.  If that doesn't do it repeat the SM process and remove the video card drivers.

Alan <><   That MIGHT be a good idea on a laptop.

Don't remember any new installation.Does it support POP3? If so, you can download your EMAILS to Outlook Express or Thunderbird or another email program.Yes,

Are you sure? The only email account provider that I know of that you have to do that is gmail. It won't help even though it had POP3.

So out of question.

Solve : cant run windows update?

Answer»

I just tried to run Windows Update for Win98se. I go to the website it looks for critical updates then wants to download Microsoft Update I say yes it starts to download. Then it says I have to be an Administrator to do it. It then asks to download Microsoft Update again and again.
There is no Administrator Function on 98Se that I know of. Is this Microsoft's way of making me upgrade to XP ? Are there multiple user accounts on your computer?
Is this computer networked, or having any variety of NT_AUTHORITY on it? My understanding--from what I read a month or so back is that microsoft is no longer supporting 95 98 98se nor ME any longer, that is including any updates. Quote from: StillSmiling on June 11, 2007, 09:22:53 PM

My understanding--from what I read a month or so back is that microsoft is no longer supporting 95 98 98se nor ME any longer, that is including any updates.
They are no longer applying security updates, but they should still allow you to download the updates. As far as I know the latest version of Windows Update can be DETERMINED by looking at the address bar after navigating to the Windows Update page...

You'll either see a v4, or a V6 somewhere in the address bar...after navigating to the Windows Update page.

I'm quite sure the latest version is v6.

You may want to look in Internet Options/Settings/View OBJECTS...not sure if its the same for 98SE...however, what we're looking for are the following:

1)  WUWebControlClass

2)  MUWebControlClass

If you see either one of these, you may want to delete these two objects...afterwords, CLEAR your temporary internet files and revisit Windows Update.  You should be prompted to download and install the Windows Update Active X Control...proceed with the download and installation.  You may have to reboot the computer.  Revisit the Windows Update page and you may see the page asking you to download and install Microsoft Update.

If it fails, again, you may want to see if v6 is part of the address bar.  If it is, just go to the link on the left of the current page that states "Change Settings".  Make sure you select Windows Update instead of Microsoft Update.  You can always visit the Office hoimepage to download and install the latest ActiveX control for updating you Office products.

Some things that may prevent you from Updating your operating system are malware, corrupt files and or a pirated copy of Windows installed on your system.  As we all know, validation is a major issue with Microsft and can be a real pain in the neck...only 2 feet lower.  So give the above a shot and let me know if you have any issues. The problem with trying to diagnose a 98SE problem from XP is like trying to diagnose a human problem from a Chimp.
Because I have 98SE I use IE 6 and it does not have those setting.
And the Windows Update Web Page  from under XP has to be different from
98SE because has no "change settings" the web address does start out as V6..but then is redirected to V4.  There I get the download page for Microsoft Update..If I reply yes it tries to download then I get the page saying I have to have Administrator Authority and goes into a loop trying to down load Microsoft Update. I know this is a Valid M.S. product because up until  about a week ago I was able to do it. I had to reinstall windows so had to run updates. Though I think but am not Certain the the web page did not a a V(x) in front of. it I don't think it"s malware since I have AVG free and run Spybot
and Adaware. The only thing that has change was I uninstalled Office 2000
premium  to install Works Suite 2003. But I am having a problem with that.
I think I  will give up the ghost and go to XP (sort if like years ago I gave in and went to VHS from  Beta)

Solve : Screen Fade Out?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a Compaq Presario R3125 Laptop, its about 3 years old and it runs on Windows XP.

Just recently the screen has started to fade out approximately 5 minutes after starting up (before this it seems to WORK fine). It doesn't quite fully fade out - as you can just make out what is on the screen. There doesn't seem to be anything in particular that triggers it.

My computer had been running slowly for a while beforehand, sometimes freezing altogether - but this wasn't that regular, and it wasn't that slow either - i had put it down to having a lot of APPLICATIONS open, or not turning the laptop off for a while. Nevertheless, I had recently deleted a number of files (films, music and games) and defragmented the hard disk drive (this is the first time I have de-fragged the hard drive since it was new). Could this somehow have TRIGGERED something?

The only other thing to note, is that i recently BOUGHT a new iGo power cord, as my other one had stopped working. This works for the laptop - however i do notice that the battery seems quite hot (I don't know if it is hotter than usual) - and maybe this is causing overheating...?

Thanks for any help,
is your fan spining on the back of the laptop??

what protections do you have?I haven't noticed if the fan is spinning or not to be honest.

I have started it up (without the power cord) and it seems to be ok at the moment - its been running for about 15 minutes. The fan is not spinning right now, however, this is the first time i've started it up for over a week - so the system maybe cool right now...?

I will try again soon with the power cord and see if the fan starts spinning or not.

I run ZoneAlarm, and regualary run LavaSoft Ad-Aware SE Personal.Ok, think i've worked it out... after plugging in the power cord it sure enough faded out. So i thought i'd check the power cord itself... it turns out that there were a number of 'connector tips' that WOULD fit my laptop that all look exactly the same. It just turns out they are not.

So with a tiny bit of research i found a sheet that tells me exactly which tip to use...

Goes to show, reading the instructions generally is a good idea...

Solve : e-mails stay in outbox in Outlook 2003?

I am running MS Outlook 2003 Basic Edition and since 2:00pm today, all of the messages that I have composed have gone to my Outbox instead of my Sent file.  But when I try to send them from the Outbox, they don't go through, yet I don't receive an error MESSAGE either.  I tested the settings already in E-mail Accounts and everything was successful. It even says "Sending 1/8 messages" on the status bar at the BOTTOM, but it gets stuck on the first one and never finishes.  Does anyone have any SUGGESTIONS for me?  Thanks!try restarting the computer... OPEN Outlook and CLICK on the Send All button on the toolbar at the top of Outlook.  Did the mail in your Outbox go out?

Solve : Windows XP won't boot and then restarts continuously?

Answer»

Yesterday my power WENT out while I was on my computer. Once the power was restored(several hours later) I tried cutting on my computer but it started to hang at the Windows loading screen. So I tried to boot by using Safe mode, it gave me these list of flies and stopped at mup.sys and after 10-20min it will completely restart itself. Next I tried the recovery console but then I got this blue screen saying
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer" UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME ***Stop:0x000000ED (0x89AFE030,0xC0000006,0x00000000,0x00000000)

It tells me to try going into safe mode but the problem above keeps happening(the restarting). I have also tried to reinstall/repair Windows XP but my computer never came with a recovery disk or Windows XP disc (it was already installed and I never had a recovery disk nor did I make backup disks) so I BURNED a disk from the Microsoft website(I don't have a floppy disk drive so burned it to a CD) but when I get to the welcome screen and press Enter it says it can't detect the EULA and that I have to quit INSTALLATION. I tried it again but I pressed R this time to repair it and it goes to the recovery console. In the recovery console it comes up C:\> instead of C:\Windows or something close to that. I try to do CHKDSK but it tells me that AUTOCHK.EXE could not be located in either startup directory or CDROM drive. Type the full path (including drive letter) for the location of AUTOCHK.EXE: I have no clue where it is let alone the path for it.

I have a HP Pavilion Media Center TV TV m7360n (Pentium D 2.8 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 300 GB HDD) I don't know all of the specs it has but I know that the above is the model that I have. I just want to SEE if I can fix this without having to go to GeekSquad or without having to lose all of my data.

have you tried repair install?? Quote from: unlovedwarrior on June 12, 2007, 03:55:11 PM

So Yes I have tried to repair install it. I was reading somewhere else about a problem similar to this, someone suggested calling HP for a recovery disc if that is what needs to be done then will I lose all my data from INSTALLING the disc? yes... if you reformat you will lose all of your data, but you might be able to slave the hhd and move your important files to another hhd until you get the computer reformated... Solve : how to add a win 98 start up to a hard disk?

Answer»

don't KNOW this is a right place to post or not. i know we can create a bootable cd using alot of burning software to allow the cd boot to DOS in start up. what i TRY to do is ADD the boot file to a hard disk, not a cd
for example, i have a USB hard disk, what i want to do is when i plug my USB hard disk on my pc and select boot from USB device, it'll boot into win 98 startup disk.
may be you'll ask what my purpose to do this, i'm actualy want to save all my ghost image file into my USB hard disk, with my ghost APPLICATION and partition magic, so i can run the partition magic and ghost just plug in my USB hard disk, i don't need to bring a boot cd with me( currently what i'm doing).
i have see PEOPLE doing this before. so sorry i didn't ask the guy to teach me.
sorry for my lousy english!

Solve : got the Blue Screen of Death--blues?

I was trying to shave down contents of DRIVE using windows ME, shaved it way too close, corrupted it and now have the blank BSOD.  Before doing the final shave I partitioned the drive and so I believe still have a bootable copy of the C drive on partition named E.  I chose to make it a primary partition.  Computer will boot only to C or A and the A boots to C.

Is there someway through DOS or other way I can get to the E partition to see if I can get a booting operating system - without making things worse?  Can't you make a FLOPPY boot disk? That way you could go to fdisk
and see what partitions show up.

This File makes a floppy boot disk for Windows ME-->Heresafe mode?? if so system restore.. or if you have your ME cd do a repair in stallThanx for tip, no safemode, no CD--computer guy who put it on there gave no CD, so no restore--I guess you have never had the BSOD--UNLESS I can get to MS Dos, I have to format and start over w/another operating system. ciao      Thanx for boot.  I surmised that was what I was going  have to do reformat c dump another op sys go get E anc copy to another drive.  If that doesn't work, maybe blow it all off and put on Linux.   ciao you cant access safe mode?? system restore is in start programs accessories system tools QUOTE from: StillSmiling on June 11, 2007, 09:17:24 PM

Just copying an OS from one partition to another will never work...if it was installed to the C: partition you MAY get lucky but i think this is an exercise in futility...

MY computer is making an TICKING sound
And the volume will not stay up, When i raise the volume
the bar moves down agiain in succession with the ticking sound?

If it was ticking/clicking and you couldn't power up, I would say it would be the power supply. SOMETIMES an inadequate power supply will cause the HD to click. Is everything else operating Ok? Is the ticking sound and the volume control the only problem? What ANTIVIRUS protection do you have?Yes that seems to be the only issue everything else seems fine and my virus prtection is Trend Micro AntivirusHow old is the MACHINE and HDD ? ?

DLoad and RUN the drive maker's diagnostics from their website.

It will tell you if that drive is failing.

Solve : My WIN 98 disappeared!!?

Answer»
The software on my old computer running 98SE has vanished. I have the disc but the product code label is long gone. Is there a way around this? or can someone provide a Win 98se product code so that I can start the computer? Thanks FIND.EXE/I "ProductKey" %winbootdir%\SYSTEM.DAT

If you haven't formatted the drive or deleted system.dat, enter this command exactly as shown, at a DOS prompt. When the system boots, hold down the ctrl key. When the menu appears use the arrow keys to select Command prompt only and press enter. You should be ar the C:\ prompt.Or there is a software method, the link below leads to a program called Magical Jelly Bean which will find any microsoft product key installed onto your computer.

Appreciate the help--Tried but could not get to the DOS prompt. I think I will need to get a valid product code to get the computer to start.Did you try the Program I linked to? Quote from: spedmath on June 09, 2007, 07:54:19 AM

The software on my old computer running 98SE has vanished. I have the disc but the product code label is long gone.

I think you need to ELABORATE on this. What HAPPENED prior to this? What can the computer do? Can you even get on? Is it Windows or just some progrtams? Etc.?
Good point. I had just cleaned out some temp files and then the computer froze. That's somewhat common for the old machine,so I restarted. The computer started but now goes directly to an install wizard for Win98 and requires the product code for the installation. Cannot get to any other PROGRAMS except the start options via the delete key at startup.  At this point I am wondering if i must buy another disc, one with the code, since I have long lost my code label from the jewel case that My disc is in. Also wondering if INSTALLING another copy of Win98 will ALLOW me to retrieve data and/or use that computer.
Did look at Magicjellybean but cannot complete startup on that computer. Do you know if this site will read the key from the disc I have if Iuse another computer to access the site?  Thanks. Quote
Tried but could not get to the DOS prompt

Can you boot from your CD? Or, do you have a bootable floppy? Quote from: spedmath on June 10, 2007, 05:19:44 AM

This may be a malware issue also.

Will not boot from theCD without the codeYou need a Win98SE code to go any further... Quote from: spedmath on June 10, 2007, 01:57:13 PM

Will not boot from theCD without the code

When you boot from the CD if you just started the installation option, it won't complete without the product key. There should be a boot menu that lets you choose to boot to the command prompt. Select this option, change to the C:\ drive, and enter the command I posted above. You do not need any code to boot into DOS.
