Solve : screen widens automatically, help?

Answer»

Recently my desktop started to widen itself automatically---and when I try to correct it using the controls on my monitor, it doesn't work. I'm very confused. I have been trying to figure out whether this is a security problem or a problem with my monitor itself. I began to consider the monitor because the desktop would expand even when my ethernet cable was UNPLUGGED. Otherwise, I have seen no evidence of anything odd happening to my comp. When I restart my computer, it will correct it, but then it will suddenly do it again. Sometimes it's fine and other times it won't be

Please, any help or suggestions??Do you have or can you borrow another monitor to verify it's not the monitor?

Alan <>< I suppose I could try and ask one of my friends to borrow their monitor and see. Thanks for the suggestion. No problem.

Please post back whether it works or not.

Alan <>< normally when a monitor gets warm and dusty the configuration will start to change ....

Try the suggestion about a differ monitor ..if that does not help then I suggest trying a video card .... QUOTE from: ace1 on April 13, 2007, 08:40:18 AM

normally when a monitor gets warm and dusty the configuration will start to change ....

Now, that's just a silly statement. All CRT monitors generate heat. And, they are surely going to collect some dust on top and on screen. But, I've used CRT monitors too many years to know that "warm and dusty" alone isn't going to cause their configuration to change. Sry I have had 3 monitor now that people have brought me that had simular problems....what happens is they over heat do to dust..yes they get warm..the circuts BEGIN to fail from over heating....thus not being able to keep the screen configuration the same...I just tore them down ..cleaned them well and they work fine for a long time after...other things i have seen it just the simple turn knob style of adjustments ..again alot of dust got in the dial on the connection end and cause a dead spot on the dial....this also cause the screen to change it own SETTINGS ANYTIME the desk , or where ever they were using the monitor, was just simply bumped..thx..That just sounds like bad luck.

Solve : My life has been flushed down the toilet?

Ok, please help. I shut down my XP last night and now when it boots up I get the login screen, as I type the password it shows verticle lines instead of little circles, and then a box pops up with.... not letters, but symbols...garbage. Thats as far as I can go. By pressing F 8 at startup safe mode will come on, but no matter which mode is selected, it goes to the WINDOWS login and I get the garbage after entering my password.

Solve : can't get into safemode on xp sp2?

Answer»

we recently had a problem with our computer freezing and crashing. We found that if we went into safe mode, disabled the graphics driver, and re booted, the computer would work fine. We download a new graphics driver and also changed some monitor settings to re enable the graphics driver, but it kept crashing. Now when we try to boot into safe mode it gets to the line..........multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\driver\alim1541.sys......... and stops!!! We can still boot the computer in diagnostic mode but are afraid to change any settings to load any devices in CASE it crashes and we can't reboot. How do we get back into safe mode? When you say you are in diagnostic mode do you mean you are in the Recovery Console ? ?

Black screen with a DOS type prompt ?No, we managed to go into MSCONFIG, after a lot of attempts, as the computer was not stable. We restarted with a dot in the diagnostic startup and now it is stable but very limited in what we can do. eg. we can not get into device MANAGER etc. And we can not get into safe mode. All the research i did points to the video driver itself...this means it's either the wrong driver for your card or a corrupt DLoad.

If you can get to Add/Remove in Control Panel i suggest un-installing the driver, re-booting and let Windows use the generic driver and then finding and re-installing the correct one.

Another issue that possibly causes this is a weak/failing PSU...post the make model and specs on that if possible and let us know how old it is../.I think I have a 700/radeon VE 64mb graphics card and AMD 3D processor 450mhz 128 mb ram, directX 9c.
The radion dosn't appear in the add + remove programs, I can't get into device manager or add hardware because i am in diagnostic set up.
If i could just get back into safe mode i could dissable the driver for the graphics card and it would start with the generic driver and it did run ok like that untill i messed it up. So i think you are right about it being the graphics driver.
But why can't i get into safe mode ?
If i change to selective start up in msconfig and start every thing but not the graphics driver then that might work. but i don't know which boxes to tick?

Do you think I might beable to get into safe mode if I deleted the Driver called ALIM1541.sys ? Because this is where it gets stuck every TIME?
What does ALIM1541.sys DO?
Some info: http://www.file.net/process/alim1541.sys.html

And: http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/sys/83-Alim1541sys.html; CHECK to see whether the details (size, version) for your file agree with this.

If I slide my pointer across the taskbar, they will disapeer, but they will keep appearing after a time.

Solve : Taking ownership of a file?

Answer»

I'm STILL having problems accessing a folder called "documents", access is denied, despite the fact that i am the only user on this computer and have administrator capabilites. I 've looked on the microsoft website and it seems taking ownership of the file may work.

There are directions on how to do this on the following link:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308421

However i can't follow these as when i open folder properties there is no security tab, or any other way of accessing ownership as far as i can see.

Any ideas?Did you remember to do this in safemode as is recommended ? ?

To enter safemode you need to tap the F8 key repeatedly as the machine is powering up...THANKS, still, the security tab it TELLS me to click on isnt there! Are you using XP Home or Pro ? ?

The only thing i can think of if it's XP Pro there might be encryption on that folder which if you don't remember the password you are in trouble...xp home, the WEIRD thing is, the file was created before i bought my computer! There's nothing i need access to in the file, but for seem reason 4od needs access to it to install.I personally don't trust programs that plave inaccessible files/folders on my machine...

Is 4od for the TV SERVICE in the U.K. ? ?

Their site has a troubleshooting and FAQ page that may be of some help...

Solve : 32-bit drivers + OS on Celeron D?

Answer»

I recently just got a motherboard and Celeron D 356 3.33GHz, but since i don't have a FAN yet, i still have time to ask one question before installing.

If you don't know, the Celeron D in question does support 64-bit, but alas i only have the regular xp PRO. One thing I'm worried about is my drivers. Some components already have 64-bit drivers available, but some do not. Would they still work even though i have a 64-bit cpu?If you have 32 bit XP the problem is already solved. Use the drivers for THAT O/S. The processor is irrelevant. Before You Begin
Before you install Windows XP 64-Bit Edition, read this section to ensure that your equipment meets the minimum REQUIREMENTS and that you have the information you will need during Setup.

Hardware Requirements
Before you install Windows XP, make sure your computer meets the following minimum hardware requirements:
733 megahertz (MHz) Intel Itanium-based microprocessor1 gigabyte (GB) of RAM (minimum)6 gigabytes (GB) of free hard disk space (minimum) for SetupVGA monitor or betterKeyboardMouse or compatible pointing deviceCD-ROM drive
For network installation:

Windows XP-compatible network adapter card and related cableAccess to the network share that contains the Setup files

If you are going to run this on a Celeron processor you might have a dissappointing experience....

But if you want to continue with this experiment there is a way to DLoad/or order a trial version from the Mothership...it is not the full blown version however and eventually times out.

Solve : Install Super Collapse II on Windows 98?

I downloaded and installed Super Collapse II to my Windows 98 SE computer. When I try to start Super Collapse II, I get an error message which says...

A required .DLL file, EBADSERVINGT20.DLL, was not found.

You can use up to Directx 8.1 on windows 98.

I would uninstall and reinstall Collapse if your computer meets the minimum requirements.I am sorry it took so long for me to reply.

I have two more qestions.
1. How can I check my sound card, and graphics?
2. Does my Intel Pentium II, 350 MHz (3.5 x 100) processor meet minimum requirements?

I do not know much about that kind of hardware. With a pentium II 350 mhz I am sure your sound and
video would meet requirements.

You can run Everest to see though.

Also,Have you been ----->HERE?I have Super Collapse II, but there is no trace of this DLL anywhere on my computer. Have you tried re-downloading the program? Perhaps even from a mirror site (if one is even available anywhere)?I tried re-downloading and re-installing Super Collapse II but it did not help.

Kip...

The above mentioned DLL is referred to on this page:

http://www.eb-ingames.com/Template1.aspx?PageID=52

Apparently this dll allows ads to be displayed within the game.

My guess is this...maybe you have some type of adware or spyware program enabled which has quarantined this file and disabled it as to not cause harm to your computer.

Read the paragraph from the above link I submitted titled "The SDK Content".

Based on your description of the problem...I believe it may, in fact, be your malware protection that is prohibiting the installation of this DLL, but I am not 100% certain.

Beware of games that come with adware or spyware pre-installed.

Good luck!GameHouse sent the following email.

Solve : implementing a .bat file??

Answer»

Hello Everyone, I am totally new at making a .bat file and would like some instructions on how to use one.
First I am trying to PUT a "Find Target" on the right click of context menu!
So I COPIED this .bat file from the instructions on the JSI website!
I hope I so far did it correctly, what I did was right clicked on the empty desktop and created a New .txt file and placed the .bat file inside it and changed the extension from .txt to .bat!
But I dont know where to go from there, I still dont have it in the right click context menu. How do I get it there? Thanks, Tom PS: here is the .bat file>>>

To add a Find Target option, an administrator would run Find_Target on the computer.

Find_Target.bat contains:

echo off

set FT="%TEMP%\Find_Target.tmp"
set FTV="C:\Find_Target.vbs"
echo REGEDIT4>%FT%

Solve : my settings wont load anything?

Answer»

can you help?? my computer wont load anything up in my settings which is set as the adminstrator. my partners settings work and hes a limited account user. my programmes wont load. so i cant go to user account or to system restore or try to amend this problem in my settings and cant in my partners as hes limited. i cant connect to the internet to download repair software and i eventually manage to run a VIRUS scan but it came back fine. the programmes appear to be there but the icons are just small white boxs {sorry-their hard to describe} and when you click on any of them it say programme not responding??? has anyone got any ideas before my expensive p.c ends up as accidently stamped on? What happened prior to this? Obviously something has changed.

What were you using for virus and spyware protection?the computer was working fine until my partner went into my settings he cant remember what he has done and i cant get in to my settings to correct it. they spy ware is a.o.l and the virus protection is avg. but before this happend the computer was running slightly slower but didnt have any major faults like this one Always a bad idea to be mucking around with something you don't understand and can't remember.

How about a system restore to a point before this snafu happened?ive tried but i have to go into my settings to do that and it wont let me. Quote from: laura on APRIL 12, 2007, 07:21:22 AM

ive tried but i have to go into my settings to do that and it wont let me.
Do you mean you can't logon to your administrative account now?

I get the impression you need to use a password on your administrative account and don't tell your partner the password. And, keep your partner on a limited user account. But, I can't tell you how to handle the personal issues here and get this situation corrected.ill be kicking him out at this rate when i go on to my settings nothing will load up, i can click on to anything but it just COMES up programme not responding. its as if all the files are there but theres nothing in them. i cannot log on to control panel, user accounts, system restore or anything to correct this error. yet his seems to work fine?? I know its genuine windows xp. would it be easier to re-install xp and start from scratch. the only THING is as you can probabily tell i havent a clue about computers. If you remember your password why not re-boot into safemode by tappingF8 while the machine is starting up...

Once there go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools and reset your account from there ...

BTW if he is on a limited user account there are no changes he could have made to create this scenario...he would have to have the password.

So once you go through the steps above and boot normally to make sure your account is working i would repeat the above process and go to your now working account and create a new password just to be on the safe side.thankyou i'll try that and let you know i would like to say many thanks to patio for the great advice regarding my problem as it has worked and my computer has returned to normal. so theres a solution for anybody else out there with a similar problem i had. after three long weeks of computer stress i'm free. thanks again patio you've made my day! Solve : How do I burn a Mac bootable DVD with XP??

Answer»

As my DVD burner is attached my windows XP system, and I can't burn on the iMac, I thought I should ask here too.

There are instructions at http://creativebits.org/mac_os_x/make_a_dvd_copy_of_mac_os_x_tiger on how to create a bootable MacOS DVD on an iMac.

I've already tried burning the ISO image using NTI backup on XP, and that wasn't bootable, and my version of cdrecord on Suse 9.3 says its license has expired. (I haven't tried cdrecord on Suse 10.0 yet, but it'll take a while to dig that system out)

Is there some special instructions with Nero or NTI backup to burn an ISO image which is bootable my an iMac?As they are 2 completely different OS's i don't think this is possible because they handle things differently...
I really doubt a Windows based program will do this for you.I do hope you're wrong.

I've successfully burnt bootable linux DISTROS using XP (but they all use the same Intel/AMD chipset on a PC)

I've also successfully burnt bootable Solaris distros using XP (but the SPARC OBP allows you to tell the server that the media is bootable)

The same DVD media is used on iMac/Windows/linux/Solaris, so there should be a WAY using the right program to burn the data in the way that MAC OS needs to identify it as bootable, regardless of what system is used to do it.

Its just a case of finding the right program and the right format ... I just hope someone knows and has written the program already PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE !!! Quote from: banjo67xxx on April 07, 2007, 04:36:33 PM

Who made that up?

  I did!

It says "Infiniti Professional DVD-R 4.7Gb 16x" on the packet, with no reference to what type of system to put it in, so I assumed you could use it on all 4.I don't think the problem is with the disc. You are trying to use one operating system to write a readable disk for another. For one, Windows CD drive doesn't EVEN recognise Mac disk. However you can get some software to do that
http://www.macwindows.com/disks2.html. I use MacDrive, it works pretty well.

Solve : Ipv6.exe and other similar apps opening for 1 millisecond only?

Answer»

My DSL line shuts down every 3 or 4 minutes. Very annoying. Must reconfigure or close and wait to get back on. Any suggestions? ISP is no help whatsoever.

Ran a free optimization recommendation program that gave many suggestions for improving connection and speed, such as changing value for auto MTU Detection, Selective ACKS, TCP receiving, etc. Have no idea where one can change values. Some must be done in registry, hence need for Ipv6.exe app--but my computer will not let DOS APPS stay open! Help!!

Oh YEAH, running Windows XP media center.

Thanks, KWhat optimisation program did you run ? ?

How is your network set up ? ? Modem and a router or just modem ? ?

How long have you had DSL and did this just start happening ? ?
I have had DSL for about five months--in combination with phone service. It worked beautifully for several weeks, then I started experiencing problems. Apart from several seconds of STATIC at onset, the phone works fine--though it does cut off the internet when used--something it shouldn't do.

I have a single computer with a remote modem supplied by the ISP connected via a 1394 net adapter. I ran a free checkup with PC Pitstop which only lists recommendations, and does not repair problems unless you buy it.

The problem with not being able to open applications such as the Ipv6 has always existed. The static and dropped signal on phone activity indicate it is probably a line issue.

Did you place filters on all the phone lines in the house that were provided with the modem ? ?

Try it temporarily on another phone jack if possible to SEE if conditions improve.

PC PitStop although decent usually wants to sell you something so take their info with a grain of salt.

I am not familiar with the program you mentioned...care to elaborate on that ?I have filters on all jacks, and have disconnected and reconnected them several times. Will try hooking up to another jack, as you suggested, but that will take some work--not a simple task.

Ipv6.exe is a Windows utility application in the System 32 folder that supposedly allows you to change values for MTU Detection (part of the PC Pitstop evaluation). Try it on your computer. Can you open it? I doubleclick the icon and I see a flash of a window (looks like a DOS window)-then nothing. Is this normal?

Anyway, I'm writing below the evaluation summary for Internet improvement:
Use HTTP1.1 on proxy none 1
Refresh pages auto. none 4
IE cache size KB none 81920
Max. Trans. none 1492
TCP Receiving 0 17520
Default TTL none 64
Auto MTU Detection none 1
Black Hole Detection none 1
Max. Dup. ACKs none 2
Fast trans. & recovery support none 1
Selective ACKs none 1
Max. connections none 6
Max. 1.0 connections none 6

first column is existing status, second is recommended. Little of it means anything to me. If you think changing any of the values might help with my disconnect problem, I'd certainly appreciate knowing how to do it.

Many thanks for your help!

Kathy

Why not run a program like TCPOptimiser to make these changes ? ?

Last i heard it was still free and it runs in Windows...

Been struggling with a broken XP-Pro Drive. System BOOTS,have internet access, all prog run but SEVERAL other problems. I have been trying to get my install CD of XP-Pro to start an install so that I can then do a Repair install. I get stopped on the licence screen. Press F8 to except. Machine hangs and will not allow me to go further. I got this copy 4 years AGO and installed Xp several times in the past. Microsoft does not recognize this copy as valid. Thought I would mention this but never had problems with install before.

Anyone out there good enough to fix this? Tnx.A copy is just that...a copy.

If it doesn't have fancy holograms and Microsoft written all over it you are stuck with what you have...

Chances are that if it isn't what's described above then their AP policy has caught up to your key code...HINT: AP = Anti Piracy

We don't help with COUNTERFEIT software here anyway. A legitimate copy should solve all your problems. Very sorry to be so honest. I got this copy from our IM back 4 yrs ago. Solve : Computer Launches explorer at boot up?

Answer»

I recently downloaded an demom software program from a website. After a few days I uninstalled the program because it wasn't what I wanted. However, everytime I boot up my computer now, the internet explorer turns on and goes to the company's website to purchase the software. Also, a message box is displayed stating the DEMONSTRATION Software has expired and must now be purchased. I have tried to quarantine every cookie. Is it in the Autoexec.bat file? Where is it launching from? I cannot find it. What OS are you using?
What web site is this? And what's the program's name?
What protection do you have? Have you updated your virus defintions and run a scan in Safe Mode?

Do that if you haven't ALREADY done so. Also, download CCleaner (install without Yahoo! TOOLBAR) and clean up with that.

If worse come to worse you can reformat your Hard DriveNeed...more...info...gasp

Operating system / antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new SOFTWARE?

If worse come to worse you can reformat your Hard Drive

If the drive is not functioning correctly then formatting, Windows and everything else is irrelevant.Well make sure you don't have a floppy disk in the 3.5 drive...some XP's
will stop your bootup if you have a 3.5 disk in while triing to boot......this
is something I ran across before but resolved ......part of human error....

If this is not the case of leaving in a nonboot disk....then try reformating
or use a system made STARTUP disk for your operating system...meaning
windowsXP,98SE...ETC ETC.. you can download them I think......If you had a floppy disk in, it would say "Please remove disk from Drive A: and REBOOT computer". One good AIO bootable disk I know of is the EBCD (which has formatting tools should you need them. Available at http://ebcd.pcministry.com/ or HIREN's boot disk, but you may have to buy that one.Pleaseeee don't try to fix something without giving more info, that might only F you up even more. Solve : Forgot my adminstrative password and don't have a recovery disk what can I do????

Answer»

I've been trying everything remember my password or change it somehow and I don't have a floppy disk or CD disk for it???Forgotten Admin or User's Password
You do not need to reinstall if you forgot the admin password.

There is a BOOT disk you can download at:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

that will let you reset the password of any account on NT4, Windows2000 or XP.

Just follow all the DEFAULT settings which are for the admin account. Used it many
times with GREAT success.

They also have a bootable CD image you can download. How does one FORGET an administrator password? With the amount of times we get asked this question i'm assuming it must be alot easier than we can fathom...

Solve : install win nt on hp dc7700 sff, sata Hard disk?

Answer»

hey GUYS,
i have problem with install WINDOWS nt 4.0, a new PC HP DC 7700 SFF, intel core 2 duo, 945 chipset, DDR2 1GHZ running on dual channel 512 x2. hard disk 80GB WD800JD SATA-3GB. SATA DVD combo drive.

there's reason why install win nt on this system , because my company have some application only can run on NT.

everytime i put the installation disk and boot up, it start with a setup screen , start to load driver, then it just reboot again, i guess it may be require SATA hard disk driver, may be i'm wrong, SOMEBODY please help!

Thank! You would be better served by getting some older vintage machines and run it SUCCESSFULLY. NT has minimal requirements, and some classic Dell Optiplexes would work just fine.

<----------------currently our company upgrading all our pc to this model . our previous model of GX240 work fine in NT. this is only one NT system we need to install some old version of program to monitor process and condition of machinery inside factory.
the old model of GX 240 has included in our company upgrade list. it 'll replace by the new HP DC7700. now this is the problem . the program we use has tested before in last upgrade 5 years ago from win NT to win 2k.(from HP Brio and IBM Netvista to GX240). we are sure the program not working in win 2k and only work in win NT)If you've just GOT to have this program, you may want to rethink the plan. no other solution? They're might be but their might not... travel to the SATA drive manuf. site and see if they have Native NT drivers for that HDD that run under NT.
Install them and re-boot and then see if everything works...
If it does not i'm afraid you are stuck with running the older hard drives that will run NT and the program...

Solve : Random weird problem?

Answer»

Some sites aren't working for me today, it comes up with the 'page cannot be displayed' error message. I have just worked out there seems to be a common theme with what sites aren't working and that theme is the word boards. No proboards or freepowerboards sites are working. I have a forum on each so it's frustrating. msn is working fine, hotmail is working fine, obviously this site is working fine, other sites are working fine but not proboards or freepowerboards forums. Not even the support sites of both of them. Just did a System Restore and put my pc back to how it was yesterday in case anything had happened but that hasn't worked, still the same.

ANYONE know why this could be happening? Has my pc BLOCKED sites with the word boards or something?

Any help or advice or anything greatly appreciated. Are you running a firewall program on that machine ? ?
If so check the permissions and or TURN it off TEMPORARILY to see if it is the problemAre the boards powered by a common board format? They could just be temporarily down. The sites work for me now though. Are they back up? They work for me. To test your theory visit http://iboard.co.uk/ which is completely unrelated to forums. Thanks for the replies guys, yeah they're fine now, APPARENTLY there was an internet problem with most of Australia last Sunday with most ISPs, the boards part was just a co-incidence.Good to hear you are back to normal...stop by anytime.

Solve : Win 98, + usb?

Answer»

I don't know what to do, I can get to Safe mode and then hit a wall.
I tried to use a flash drive with my old win 98 mach. to recover some photos, it would not accept my device. I then shut down my comp and attempted to restart.
During the restart the plug/play (?) from my flash drive attempted to install in my comp. I am now caught in a loop.
In normal startup I see my win98 logo then it blacks out and tried to load the flash mem. program and gets stuck. When I load in safe I have attempted to use Dr. Watson and discover I have incompatible software trying to load but I can't find it and watson does not give me a location or remedy, just notice the softW is unrecognised. I have looked over my start menu and can find nothing I do not recognise. I also checked the install/uninstall menu and found nothing. My computer tell me it has unrecognised software but does not tell me where it is.
I am stuck can anyone HELP?
<>
Who makes thedrive ? ?" During the restart the plug/play (?) from my flash drive attempted to install in my comp" Did you remove the flash drive from the USB connector?[/color
You may have to go into the registry and remove that software you installed for your flash drive. But first, do the Control/Alt/Delete thing and look at what's running? Do a "print screen" and post what shows.

Alan <>< Use win98's step-by-step option and prevent the driver or other software for the pen drive from loading. This may also show you where it is loading from and allow you to manually remove it.Is this Win98SE by the way ? ?

It was a little BETTER for USB...Thanks for the info.
This comp is using W98, SE I believe, Manf. was Biltz Comp. Actually been a while since I checked so I am not positive.
The device was a PNY flash drive.
When the Screen goes dark during the normal start-up and I use the Ctrl,Alt,Del
all the happens is restart. I can get to Safe mode without trouble and that is where I get stuck. I also have tried to do Comp Main. and dump all temp files and
this has not helped.

What are you referring to when you say load step-by-step option? Can I SOMEHOW load each program individually, how, I have seen the option to load program groups?I have seen this option when I am selecting the safe mode but I was not quite sure how to use it properly. When you get into safemode look under Add/Remove programs inside Control Panel...if the PNY program is listed then select Remove.
It will ask if you want to restart...select No or Cancel.
Go back into Control Panel to System/device Manager...find the listing for the USB stick...right click and select Remove. Power down. Remove the stick and re-boot...it may take 2 or 3 re-boots to act normal again but be patient and let it finish each boot sequence before powering down...

Good Luck and Hope This Helps.PNY has a Win 98SE driver for their USB flash drives. I've installed it on a Win 98SE system and it worked fine. This is for Win 98SE, not Win 98.

To determine which version of Windows you have, right click on My Computer and select PROPERTIES

If your flash drive is one of the Attache models, go here and download a driver IF you have Win 98SE: http://www2.pny.com/support/support_landing_subcat.aspx?SectionID=1083&RootSectionID=1057&TypeID=5. PNY's website must be overloaded; it's not always available, so be patient.

If you have Win 98, I think you're going to have to use some other means to get those files.Just a thought. Is there any way to set my comp for an earlier date as can be done with XP, and reset everything?I just dug in a bit further and found that Dr.Watson says, Does not appear to be a win 95 plug-and-play compatible display driver???
But I have win 98 in my comp?? Go figure? Quote from: frediver on APRIL 11, 2007, 03:41:31 PM

have a OS I need to install one. I'll see what I can come up with.

I dusted off an old CPU of mine and tried powering it up. I can't get any video, and I believe the computer is not booting up ANYWAYS, 'cause I'm getting no sound from the speakers. When I first turn on the computer, the monitor recognizes it and turns "green", but after approx. 3 SECONDS it goes "amber". Same happens when I turn the computer off. I only want to USE this computer to FIND some old files and screw around with it, but can't get it to provide video, or apparently boot up. Thanks for any help.

Solve : Half of my hard drive is missing...?

Answer»

Hullo, all.

I recently purchased a computer from a friend of mine. Unfortunately, he wiped the hard drive before he handed it over, which left me scrambling to reinstall an operating system. No big, done it before, right? And everything seemed to go fine.

Except, now my 160 GB hard drive is an 80 GB hard drive with no partitions.

Here's what I did:

1) First, had to install Windows 98 SE, because I only have a Windows XP upgrade disk.
2) Installing Windows 98 SE went fine, except the computer couldn't recognize the RAM and kept crashing as soon as Windows tried to load.
3) I installed the upgrade and entered the new license key I bought.
4) Windows 98 SE of course formatted the hard drive to FAT 32. I corrected it to NTSF.

And that's all I did. Now, as I said, the computer is not recognizing the full hard drive. I'm sure it has something to do with it being formatted as FAT32 initially, but I can't figure out how to fix it.

My Computer:
Windows XP SP2
160 (or 80 or whatever) GB hard drive
2 GBs RAM
Motherboard: K8V-MX (already made sure the BIOS is up-to-date)

Now, something else I noticed - when I go into the BIOS and look at the primary drive, it also says it's only 80 GB, which is simply not true. Everything in the BIOS is set to Auto detect. I've tried messing with diskpart and Disk Manager. There are no partitions recognized. The other half of my drive has, apparently, vanished into thin air.

So, any ideas as to how I messed this whole thing up and how I can fix it?

Thanks in advance.DLoad and run the setup utilities from the HDD manuf. site.

Hopefully this will correct the errors you have.I could try it, but I'm not sure that would help, though. Not to mention that I have no idea who the manufacturer of the hard drive is. The sticker has, unfortunately, been removed. There's a standard windows driver on there now.

It worked fine for my friend last week and I haven't done much of anything to it since.

When I went a-googling, I kept seeing posts about this kind of thing pre-SP1, where people mysteriously "lost" half their drive volume, but the SOLUTIONS aren't applicable to my system, as far as I can tell.Ok, I think I know what the problem is now.

So, when I installed W98se, it formatted my drive FAT32 because 98 had that limitation where it couldn't recognize large drives, due to the 16-bit issue. So, when I loaded Windows 98, it messed everything up. Installing XP wasn't enough to fix it.

Now, as for fixes, I've found several on the web, even a few offered by Microsoft, but they're for Windows 98. Not XP. I know if I try it, it'll make things worse.

Looking in Disk Managment isn't even showing the unallocated portion of my drive.

I honestly don't know how to fix this beyond reformatting the whole dang hard drive, but if I do that, I'll be back in the same place, because I only have a Windows XP upgrade disk. Yargh. There has to be a solution.Do the XP upgrade / choose to format the whole drive as NTFS. You should see the ENTIRE drive size when doing the upgrade, if not check the BIOS to see if IT sees the whole drive size.

Alan <>< I did try that earlier. Even the BIOS is showing that it's 80 GB.

I started running chkdsk, though, and came across something that looks like a clue. Here, it says...

CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the volume bitmap.
Windows found problems with the file system
Run CHKDSK with the /F option to correct these.

78148160 KB total disk space.
17830809 KB in 24271 files.
         7080 KB in 2519 indexes.
               0 KB in bad sectors.
113308 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
60196963 KB available on disk.

512 bytes in each allocation unit.
156296321 total allocation units on disk.
120393926 allocation units available on disk.

So, my missing space is there. Chkdsk found it. Now, I'm not overly familiar with chkdsk. What is /F and is that going to kill my system if I try to do it? There's not a whole lot on this computer that needs backing up at this point and I still have my laptop if the whole thing IMPLODES. I'd just rather not start from square one. Thanks!A) You do not need to load 98 first.

B) If you don't know what is in your computer, even something as simple as the drive maker, maybe it's time to find out.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

C) Then run the diagnostics.

D) Remember even though you are saying there are no partitions, there is at least one. Otherwise nothing would load on it.

E) If the drive is not seen CORRECTLY in the BIOS, then that may need to be addressed first. Was this drive ever compressed?A) Then how would I load Windows XP when I only have an upgrade disk?

B) I've only had the computer about a week. And the guy I bought it from is, literrally, blind. Give me a break.

Thanks for the program link, though. I completely forgot about that utility, which I have on my other computer.

D) I know there is a partition, what I meant by there isn't one is that it's not showing a second partition. Hm... Looks like about half the drive is unformatted.

E) I don't think the drive was ever compressed. I can ask the guy I bought it from, but he doesn't know a whole lot about the system itself. He had it built for him, under the circumstances. Looking at what the utility says about the BIOS, I take it back. It may need to be updated again. Quote from: source42 on April 10, 2007, 08:40:09 AM

A) Then how would I load Windows XP when I only have an upgrade disk?

Boot with the XP upgrade disk. It will ask you early on in the install to insert the Win98 CD to verify you are upgrading.

D) I know there is a partition, what I meant by there isn't one is that it's not showing a second partition. Hm... Looks like about half the drive is unformatted.

When installing XP delete ALL partitions and repartition it however you want.

Quote
E) I don't think the drive was ever compressed. I can ask the guy I bought it from, but he doesn't know a whole lot about the system itself. He had it built for him, under the circumstances. Looking at what the utility says about the BIOS, I take it back. It may need to be updated again.

We'll await your info.

Solve : Installing trouble.?

Answer»

Just installed a clean copy of Windows and when I went to GO to update half of the updates installed but stopped at a framework. I tried manually installing it but it just STAYS stopped on a certain file. I have the same trouble with installing the itunes player. Not sure if this has been answered but any ideas on how to fix this?Is Service Pack 2 PART of the installation? I've found that sometimes if you don't have SP2 installed you will have problems.

Alan <>< Yeah I have service Pack 2 installed. Why is it the updates I NEED and want updated seem to have the trouble? So anyone know or have the same problem ? What is the exact error message? What does a "clean copy of Windows" mean?Is it the .net framework that it is hanging on by any chance ? ? ?

If so this is a fairly large file and it may not be hanging at all...

Solve : forgot my windows xp login password?

Answer»

okay GUYS i need help!!!! my friend gave me her computer and STUPID me loged out and then when it loged in it said her name and asking for a password. and she doesnt remember it and the hint isnt working either!!

is there a way to get around it?? is there a default password? someone help soon!!!

theres no guest account made!? i DONT have much timego here.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305478/en-us

I hope this help ya'That will help with a user account, not an administrator account. For that password you will need to contact the owner of the machine. An administrator account password should never be used lightly, and this is why. well here the thing my friend said to press F8 go in safe mode and go to adminstrator (it says my friends name then adminstrator) and leave password blank and press enter

but it was the wrong password

the adminterator of the old computer doesnt ever remember setting any PASSWORDS!!!!

am i locked out forever?
Yes F8 to safe mode gives you access to the hidden Administrator account, But if the owner password protected the user account durring installation it defaults the same password to the hidden Administrator account...

contact your "Friend" or the "Old Administrator" and ask if they remember the very first password they used...Whether it's you or her i can't explain forgotten passwords....You mean "whether it's you, her or the old administrator".

Do you have a real Windows CD? If so, it is time to use it and reinstall everything. If not, it's off to the store for you.if i reinstall everything wont i loose all my work???i have the disk that my friend used to put that windows xp on her computer

but i have alot of important work on that comp that i dont want to loose will i loose it??Yes, it will be long gone.

Solve : my monitor has a box appear with a message reading: not optimum mode reccomended?

Answer»

I turn on computer which you can hear starting up, but a box with message saying: not optimum mode, recommended mode:1280x1024 60Hz with a question mark this message disapears left hand top of moniter, please help Need...more...info...gasp

Operating system / antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new SOFTWARE?

Alan <>< Does it GET into Windows at all ? ?
If so you could try right clicking on an empty area of the desktop and adjust your resolution to the settings it's calling for.no i can't. I can hear the computer loading as when finished, I can hear EBAY alerts, but only that message appears on the moniter. here's hoping julia3435The monitors at college used to do this, if they weren't on the manufactorer's idea of optimal mode.

Does the message obsure the entire screen? Usually there is some way to close the message and continue using normally.

The monitor is just informing you that the BEST quality can be acheived from that display setting. Set it to that setting is the easy way to get rid of the message lol.

If you want to use another supported mode that is not "optimum" that should be fine without problems. What setting are you using now? You should be able to either disable the message or exit it somehow. I've never seen one that prevents you from seeing the whole screen before. What monitor is this? Dell?

ALSO operating system and antivurus etc are unlikely to have any effect upon the problem. The only software I can think that will effect this could be graphics card drivers.

I have a Compaq Presario S4300NX. I went to RESTART it this morning and it won't start-up. We RECENTLY bought a new hard drive so I'm really HOPING this is not the problem. Any THOUGHTS?

Solve : What is running ??

Answer»

I shut off everything via CTRL+ALT +DEL (except explorer) and I am still using 20% of sytem resources according to the performance tab in "SYSTEM Properties". What could be running ?

Windows 98SE
511 Ram
Dell 1.8g processorSo,first of all your computer is clean and not overheating
correct?Clean and coolHave you ran an anti-virus program?Yes I have AVG. I ran a full scan. I also ran: CCleaner, Ad-aware, Norton Win doctor(ran utility from CD), I ran scandisc (thorough) and then I shut off everything via CTRL+ALT +DEL (except explorer) and I am still using 20% of sytem resources according to the performance tab in "System Properties". Try Security Task Manager--->Here

You get a 30 day free trial.System resources in 98se indicates something entirely different from CPU usage. There will ALWAYS be some resources in use, even after a reboot. This is perfectly normal and is not anything to worry about unless the system runs out of system or gdi resources. Unlike newer versions of Windows, in 98/98se these resources are limited. There are many things that affect resources. Items loading at startup, even if you end the program, will leave portions in memory so they don't have to be reloaded. .dll files often remain in memory for some period of time after the program is closed. Thats the way Win98 operates. I hear what your saying, but this is recent. My computer SLOWED down when this happened and I compared it to my other computer that has the same programms and operating system and it has much more resources available. When everything is running I'm using over 50% of my resources before I do anything. When my operations got slow and CHOPPY it prompted me to start looking for the problem. Is there a way to see cpu usage?Yes. If you have your win98 system tools installed you can check lots of things. System Monitor should appear under accessories/system tools. If it isn't there, you will need your windows CD to install it. After you open system monitor, click the edit tab, click add item, click kernel, click kernel usuage. You can select the way it is displayed. LINE, bar chart, and number are the choices. Choose number.

Solve : Using Add & Remove Programs?

Answer»

Good Evening,

I'm running Windows XP Home.

Today I THOUGHT I would clear out old and seldom used programs using Windows Add & Remove Programs. All went well until I noticed that one program I had removed still showed up in the list. I tried again and this time I got an error message:

'Could not open logfile' etc.

So I checked my listing where the file was meant to be and that folder was gone.

This also has HAPPENED on another program.

How can I delete these from the listing?

Thank you
Tarabluejavascript:replaceText(' ', document.forms.postmodify.message);
Huh?
If it has already been removed, use CCleaner to remove it from the list.
It will also clean other junk, including registry entries, if you ask it to.
Just be careful with it.
Refer to this guide to set it up before use.
Hope this helps, and welcome to the forum.Helllo Calum,

Never heard of this program before, I'm reluctant to use ones's like Ashampoo as they destroy more than you ask for, but I'll give this one a try.

Thank You
TarablueCCleaner is safe to use as long as you follow the guide and are careful.
The only potentially dangerous thing is the Registry cleaner, but CCleaner can make a backup of the registry before you begin.
Let us know how it goes.I'll affirm what Calum said. CCleaner is safe. It also has an uninstaller which can be used, in lieu of Windows Add or Remove Programs panel, to remove programs. To find it, click on Tools. If running CCleaner's Windows scan and ISSUES scan does not get RID of that program you removed that still shows up in the Add or Remove Programs list, try using CCleaner's uninstaller. And if that FAILS too, you can use the same panel to delete the entry from Add/Remove Programs.

... instead of having to manually look 4 the pic and having to R.click it and set it up that way.
There's ANOTHER way. When you open Display Properties, Desktop, click on the Browse button. Then, you can navigate to any folder and select images/photos. This could include all the images in a folder, such as My Pictures.Better yet, go to the folder with the pictures, double-click on them (which should open up the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer), right click the picture in the viewer window, and select Set as Desktop Background.I think that's what he was trying to get away from. From his post:

It's a sub-folder within the Windows folder.

Solve : OLD GEEZER NEEDS HELP?

Answer»

Hello,

Yes, I'm an old geezer and I'm not computer literate - but at least I was able to find this help center.

When starting the computer I get the following error message: "The system DS user 32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occured because the DLL C:\windows\sytem 32\HHCTRL.OCS occupied an address range reserved for windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL."

I have no idea whatsoever who the vendor is and I have no idea how to correct my problem. In fact, I have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. I use McAffe for anti-virus, Ad-Aware (FREE donation version), Windows Defender - and I just purchased Registry Mechanic.

I've run all of these "programs" (or maybe you refer to them as applications - I'm not sure).

Would somebody please help me. If you are able to give me some instructions would you please do it in simple step-by-step "pedestrian" language. I really am an old guy and just don't understand this stuff very well.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Don

What version of Windows are you using? Do you have a program called Dreamweaver installed? Many thanks for your response.

I'm using Windows XP version #2. No...I do not have Dreamweaver. You need to run scans for malware (virus, adware, etc.) then get the security updates for your version of windows. Microsoft has issued a fix, but it might be different depending on whether it is XP Pro or XP Home, and the service pack installed. A list of security patches can be found Here.Thank you 2K_dummy,

My computer is only a few months old. It's an HP a1647c with Media Center and Windows Home Edition.

I previously ran everything you mentioned. If I go to the download center and download the wrong thing, will I mess everything up???

Thanks in advance.

Don

Have you been getting Windows Updates all along, as notified by Windows? If so, I think you don't need to go the website posted by 2K_dummy. If not, getting updates would be a good idea. But, you may want to take a different approach than the aforementioned website if you find that site confusing.

Just before this problem started, did you install or uninstall anything? You could also try this. Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter.Have your Windows CD handy as it might ask for it.

Note there is a space between sfc and /.Soybean,

I've been getting automatic updates from Microsoft. So before downloading anything I went to Windows Update and found I did not need any updates.

No sir, I did not install, uninstall or download anything.

Wow, here's what I did do, though, so thanks for asking. I ran Disc Cleanup and put a check next to everything. I'm sure (but not certain) that could be the problem.

Thank you!!!Patio,

I did as you instructed and GOT an error message saying that windows could not find sfc/scannow.I doubt that Disk Cleanup caused the problem. It's normally OK to delete everything it finds.

When you tried sfc/scannow, did you put a space between sfc and /, as patio advised?
It should be sfc /scannow, not sfc/scannow. See the difference?I've just had the same problem after a windows update? Please follow this thread to see if any of these solutions help.
I see you already have your own thread on your problem, so follow both of them.I did not follow Patio's original instructions properly. I forgot to leave the space.

I just did it properly and scanned the machine and received the following message:

"Files that are required to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache. Insert your Windows XP Professional CD2 now.

1. HP never supplies a CD with their computers (something about it's PARTITIONED someplace else (I think).

2. I have Windows Home version - but the message refers to the Professional Version.

Right now, as I type this I'm on "terminal" hold for HP Customer Service.

I will report again after I speak to them, if they ever come on the line.

It's possible it will run from the Home CD...worth a try at least.
After you reach HP LET them know that you need the full XP CD and that you do NOT want to use the restore partition as if you do you will lose all your data.
They will probably not agree at first so be firm til you get what you want.I want to thank everyone who posted a message trying to help me. Here's what I did.

Since the computer is still under warranty I called HP (in India) and the technician took control of my computer and did a lot of things about which I do not have a clue.

However, ONE thing he did was to dowload "CCleaner" and he told me to use it a few times a week.

Anyway, my problem is solved - AND I REALLY WANT TO THANK EVERYONE WHO RESPONDED TO ME WITH THEIR IDEAS!!!!!!!!!!!!
