Solve : msdos error message?

Answer»

I am getting the following error message:

standard mode:FAULT outside the MSDOS extender
EC=0000 CS=0337 IP=28D0 AX=0000 BX=D4C0 CX=0001 DX=0000 SI=0397 DI=0000 BP=0196
DS=0277
ES=032F SS=027F SP= 0188
Please remove any floppy discs from your drives and press any key to restart the
system

I have 40 gigas harddrive, 2 partitions, the primary only using 5% and the
EXTENDED
using 95%.  I try to get rid of the primary and just use the extended, using all
of that part but every time i go back to fdisk.exe it COMES back with the 2
partitions
again. How can i just delete the smaller one and use ALL of my harddisk and
getting
rid of the error message?

If i bought a new hard disk will i still get the error message? thanks, ali
Alot more info on your system, OS and what might have happened prior to this and someone will be along shortly...aliwatts, you can't have only an extended partition. You have to have at least one primary partition! If you want a single partition, I sugest you to delete the extended partition (or partitions) - after a system back-up on another media, of course.
How do you get that message? You boot the COMPUTER and simply it just throws you that or you make some modifications? Did you check for any floppy disk in the floppy disc unit?

Solve : XP and Nmake 15?

Answer»

Hi!

Can I use Nmake 15 to compile c/c++ source with compiler,
with Windows XP.
Before it worked with Win98.

Thank you!
If it does not work in WINXP, consider using Compatibility Options.
Right click on the program in question, and select Properties --> Compatibility.
You can make it run on compatibility mode for Win98 there.
Hope this helps.Thank you,
 but I haven't XP on the list - win 95, 98  , NT and 2000 ,found.

Regards!Select Windows 98 on the list.
That's what I meant to say.I did it.

Thank you!I guess it works now then?

Solve : Reformat Windows XP without any disks?

Answer»

I have windows xp and may need to reformat it soon. However the computer never came with any disks for me to do that. How can I either make my own disk or reformat another way? thanksIs the OS and other restore material on one of the partitions?

The manual that comes with the computer usually tells exactly
how to make restore disks. ...Have you tried that?
"Is the OS and other restore material on one of the partitions?"

by this do you mean i find it on the C:/ drive or something? if so, what file name am i looking for exactly?Well, your C:\ drive should have a hidden partition perhaps
it is called D:\ but it is still only the one drive unless you
have added a hard drive...Manufacturers are to cheap to
do it right to start with. You should have somewhere in
your owners manual that tells you how to make a one time
copy of restore disks.[Off topic]
street1, there is no C:\ drive... There is only the c:\ partition.
[/Off topic]

You may use knoppix or another LINUX free live cd to see what partitions do you have on your computer (for example you may use Knoppix with gparted or qtparted).

Why do you say you have to reformat the c: partition? (attention: I said partition and not all the partitions; and I mean only the windows partition in my affirmation). You can also go to Control Panel->Adminstartive Tools->Computer Management->Disk Management. It will tell you all partition on your hd.

B.Some brand name systems come with that 'hidden' partition with on it.  Another way to tell is when the system boots you'll see a notice something like..." Hit F2 to restore"...

Well, thank you viking. We will use perfect English from now on.

What is C:\ drive? Folks round here refer to it as the hard drive.

We know it is a hard disk but, why elaborate?

You got me chortling again. COLOthers call it the "hard disk drive".

C: is the drive designation given to WHATEVER you have windows on. Traditionally, floppies are A:, CD-Roms D: E: F:, etc... some (not all) PC's have a hidden drive that pre-built machines use in case of hard-drive failure.

You said it didn't come with a formatting disk. Did it come with a Restore disk or an XP install? I'm surprised, nobody asked what kind of PC you use (Dell, Gateway, etc.)Looks like the lights are getting dimmer..... Hey All, long time... Back to the main , alot of systems do not have the recovery partition however if you computer is a name brand that came with xp installed ie. Dell, HP, Gateway ect... you can contact them online and get recovery disks that are the original to your system and will clean install windows from a new or FORMATTED HD... it costs normaly about 20 bucks to have them shipped to your house... $20?? That's an OUTRAGE! I'd demand it free, S&H included. But then, this kind of corporate crap is why I MOVED to OEM and self-assembled machines, and never looked back.

Solve : Xp rebooting problem?

Answer»

I am running xp home.  After I installed my new sound card (pci sound blaster audigy se), my system randomly REBOOTS at times.  It will make a "errr" sound, as if its stuck on a piece of a specific sound, and reboot directly after.  I have no idea on what to do, but its driving my crazy!   Any help will be greatly appreciated. Hope theres a fix for this somewhere. THANKS:)If you did this yourself then open up the computer again and make sure that any of the cables and connectors are not touching the cpu fan and that they are all fitted tightly into the sockets on the drives and make sure the memory modules are tight in there slots, very often when fitting a new card you can easily disturb other connecting cables moving them close to the fan can make a noise somewhat like you are getting.
its thin gentle slim tiny hands like mine you require (mine are 9 and a half)that are required in some computers, but MAINLY its being observant, look where everything is, where its placed and be careful.re-seat the sound card. re-seat it tightly. get latest driver. if PROBLEM persist toss the sound card and see if it happens again.

Solve : How to determine windows version?!?

Answer»

Does exist some files and/or folders located in the install dir that are specific for certain windows version?
For eg. i need to be able to determine what version of windows is installed in c:\windows.
Right click on My Computer and see Properties.cute
but i,m WORKING in true dos mode
i need to KNOW if there are special files for every windows version or if there is a file that contains the win versionUse VER command. Or run winver.exe under system32. You can just type winver too.I think this ONE will work, too:

echo %os%

I USE WinXP, and that is a VARIABLE, not sure if Win98 has it. (I assume you're using Win9x, because you mention DOS mode, which is not in NT or above) On any NT-based system, the result is WINDOWS_NT. For you... I'm not sure. It's been a long time since I used Win9x.

Solve : swapping hd=problems?

Answer»

Hey all. I recently acquired a Dell Dimension 2400 from a friend. It had a more powerful processor than my old eMachines computer, so I decided to swap the hard drive from my old comp to this new one. The old HD has Windows XP Home installed, as well as an old, nonfunctional XP Pro (long story, the comp is on dual-boot but only Home runs). It runs very well on the old eMachines. So when I swapped the old HD into the new Dell computer, and tried to boot up I had problems. The BIOS recognizes the HD, and I get to the boot MENU. I select Windows XP Home and press enter. However, INSTEAD of starting XP, the computer just restarts. The next time I try to do this, I get a message saying that Windows did not start properly... blah blah blah. I tried all the options, and I always get the same result: a restart.

For the time being, I put the HD back into my old computer and it still works fine. Any ideas why this is happening? You are putting a hard drive on a different machine
XP isn't configured for....Think of Format....

Sentences often end with
prepositions within......LOLHave you tried SAFE mode?

Have you tried the repair utility on the windows xp cd?

It's a driver problem... I suppose because of different motherboards. I couldn't say for sure.
But if you insist moving the old hard drive to the other computer, I would sugest you to reinstall windows. With all the troubles this involves: backup, reinstall, everything. This can be done doing a repair install..."can be done" --- but not easily.

9.9 out of 10 times you cannot simply move an HD from one computer to another without reinstalling the OS.

Fortunately if it's a Dell you can get a dell OEM XP CD from anyone and install the OS then use the windows AUTH sticker code. You can try craigslists to borrow an OEM sticker.

Then you have to go to dell's website to get all your drivers. OK what I did was I kept the original Dell hd, and put my eMachines HD in slave to it. I had to reinstall most programs, however, but all my documents, MUSIC, pics, etc are still there. Now the WIERD thing is, the eMachines computer was a 1.6GHz P4 with 512mb of pc133 SDRAM. The Dell is a 2.4GHz Celeron with 128mb of pc-2700 DDR. The thing is, the Dell runs incredibly slow. Much, much slower than the eMachines. I'm sure the low RAM is contributing to the problem, but I still think it should be at least as fast as the older machine. I mean, it takes 10-20seconds to open My computer. And this is with virtual memory on a different HD as Windows, and all visual elements turned off ("performance" mode)

You need more RAM. Much more RAM I would say...

Solve : My Mup.sys solution.?

Answer»

Hi all,

This is a follow up of my previous post regarding the Mup.sys issue. (I even saw this happened on two of the demo notebooks at Microcenter.) Apparently this is a very problematic and common issue for Win XP. There are TONS of link regarding this issue when I googled it. Each of them has a different solution but none of them applied to my situation (trust me, I tried them all! --well almost.) but I did learn a lot from them THO. Like everything else, once you know the solution, it appears to be extremly obvious and simple.

What I did was I took the harddrive out of the laptop, the problematic one that hanged at Mup.sys and stuck in the dreadful infinite reboot loop. I hooked it up to a USB enclosure, plugged it in to my desktop. The desktop is a multi boot machine, Windows 98, windows 2000, windows XP, and three distros of Linux. I boot the desktop into Win2000, went into the WinXP partition, copy the entire DRIVERS folder from the Wondows\system32\drivers\ DIRECTORY. (This is important, make sure WinXP is not the active OS.) I replaced the one on the laptop harddrive with this good one. Then I put the harddrive back to the laptop. Boot the laptop up with winXP CD, using the recovery console, I typed in chkdsk /r and waited with my fingers crossed. Sure enough, once the chkdsk complete, it boots up beautifully into WinXP, with 0 data lost. The sweet WinXP chime sound! As a thank you, my female friend is taking me out for dinner!

Well, why not just do a clean reinstallation? Firstly, even tho all her data were backed up, she would still have to reinstall all the applications which is a major pain in the *censored*. Secondly, it works in situation that when a original restore CD is not available, like in this case. THIRDLY, a simple reinstallation is boring, cheating, no fun and no challenge.

This solution might not apply to every situation and perhaps it's not the best way, but it works for me and I hope it will help someone as well.

Solve : Deleting empty folder?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP Pro - somehow, I created a folder:  What If.. (note: 2 periods) - I have been unable to delete it - when I checked DOS (tree), I learn that it is an empty file (0 bytes) - how do I delete it?? - (it's appearing on the desktop & it's driving me crazy...)

What HAPPENS when you try to delete it?

Also, a side-note: Although parenthetical statements (in parentheses like these) may add more INFORMATION (about what you're trying to say), sometimes it doesn't add much (it becomes redundant) and makes sentences harder to understand (they start looking like source code) and they make the reader lose their train of thought (they get mixed up in what the parenthetical statements say), so the sentence becomes meaningless (and a waste of time to read).

That may be the longest sentence I ever wrote. Seriously, I'm scratching my head on what the 2 periods and tree notes are. Definitely, by all means tell us everything you think we need to know, but PLEASE, organize it a bit. (At least you gave us the OS -- that's more than 80% of new members. )error message appears:  Cannot delete file.  Cannot read from the source file or disk

the reference to DOS/tree is my having gone entered "cmd" in the Run command, which then opened a window - I then entered cd: c:\ and entered the various folder NAMES until I arrived at the folder:  What If..    - per the  info, this is a folder with has 0 bytes in it -     it appears as What If..

it's my understanding that a folder cannot have punctuation marks as part of the folder name You can have punctuation marks:

When in CMD, can you navigate to the folder and do a RD on it?

C:\Documents and Settings\Eriz\Desktop>RD "What If.."

The quotes are essential, because the folder contains a space. I'm not 100% sure this'll work, but if Windows won't delete it, maybe the Prompt will. I tried that - didn't work -  error message:  The system cannot find the path specifiedHrm. A slippery problem, this is.

I'm looking on Google for this problem, and some of them suggest trying the delete in Safe Mode. Could you please try that?I would need to shut down, and re-start Windows in "safe mode", correct?  sounds a bit risky (for me, that is...) - That is correct.

As for "Safe Mode" being risky: I assure you that it is not, especially if all you're going to do is try to delete a file. In Safe mode, no DRIVERS are running (for max processor speed), and scripts can't run (for security). Deleting a folder should be fine, assuming it works. The worst you can do, I swear, is run into the same problem as in Normal mode. OK - will try - "wish me luck" - Good luck, Eriz! You should definately be able to delete this from a command promptcan do this from a cmd or command line prompt just put a wild card character for every strange character you see and/or use the short 8.3 character format.

First go to the directory and see if you can remove it using the 8.3 character format. To do this type:

dir /x

in the directory that contains the folder.

This should list a folder with a ~ in it try using the del command with the name of the file with the tilde. For example if it was something such as: P!uc,t~1 you would type:

del P!uc,t~1

If you have character that cannot be typed on the keyboard or are causing problems replace those characters with a ? which is a wild card for unknown character so could be something like.

del P?uc?t~1

If still no luck try deleting it using a wildcard such as:

del P*

Of course doing the above command will delete anything beginning with P so use with caution.

Finally, there are file utilities designed to remove bad files you could also try that or run a scandisk often that will remove strange files such as these.YOU ARE A GENIUS!  IT WORKED!! - THANK YOU!! - I can sleep easy, now...

ErizSure, no problem. Have a good night.

(Dang, I'm on a roll, tonight. I really should get to bed, it's almost tomorrow... but I'm on a ROLL! )There's never any need to stroke Dilbert's ego because nobody does it as well as himself.  Ha.NO... I solved two problems in a row, mostly myself. That's rare; I never do that! There's a fine line between ego and excitement.

Solve : Help with Harddrive issue?

Answer»

Check my next post.Try a brand new 80 PIN IDE cable in that setup...I found out what the problem was, and I kind of managed to fix it. When I say kind of, I mean that I have it running, but there are still problems. One of the problems was that the blocks installer wasn't working correctly, and I still don't know how to get it running so it installs all the blocks. The second thing is I just realized that my Harddrive is only being read as a 20 or 30 GB HDD, while it is a 200 GB HDD. I think if I update my BIOS then it will get fix the problem, but I don't know how to do it. I downloaded the BIOS, and the only file I have from the download is a .ROM file. What do I do?This is more than likely an image file that needs to be copied to a cd.  Then you use the cd to do an image flash of the BIOS.

However, before you do that...could you give us the specs on your system?

1)  Motherboard
2)  Operating system
3)  Etc., etc.

Once we have this info...we'll be able to provide you with an answer.

Depending on your OS...you should be able to configure the hard drive using the hard drive's diagnostic software.

Never flash your BIOS unless you absolutely have to.

Couldn't have said it better...

Editing your original post will only add to the confusion.

Post the info saviour requested before you wind up with an expensive doorstop.I guess I should have kept part of my original post.

My harddrive wasn't being detected correctly in my BIOS. I couldn't get it to be the primary master, and because of that I'd always get an error message when I started my computer. I'm still having the problem. My friend told me to update my BIOS because that would most likely help.

The type of motherboard is an ASUS socket 775 P5LD2-VM, my processor is a Pentium 4 3.06 Ghz, I have 1 GB of RAM, and I should have 200 GB of memory on my harddrive. I'm using Windows XP Media Center 2005.

The file I downloaded to update my BIOS was a .ROM file, and according to the manual. It also told me to put it on a floppy disk, however my computer doesn't have a floppy drive. If I do need to update my BIOS, could I do it with a CD?Is the drive on IDE 1 ? ?
Was it ever detected properly ? ?
Is this the original Media Centre install ? ?

I seriously doubt that the BIOS is the issue here... Quote

Right now...this should be the furthest thing from your mind...

Answer patio's QUESTIONS...

Also supply us with the make and model of your hard drive.

Is this a new hard drive?

Did it come with the computer or did you purchase it?

At any rate, you should be able to visit your hard drive manufacturer's website to download and install a diagnostic software program that will enable you to configure and install your hard drive for use with your computer and operating system.

Whatever you do...DO NOT FLASH THE BIOS!!! Quote

I don't think so.
Yes it was when I first got the computer. Then when I switched the motherboard I started getting the error messages but I still had 200 GB of memory on the HDD.
No, I just ordered a new copy from HP because they didn't give me one when I first got the computer.

I honestly don't know what brand the harddrive is. It came with my computer when I first got it from HP. Is there a way I can figure it out, without having to remove it?

I believe my computer thinks it's a WDC WD2000JS-60MHB1, but that doesn't tell me anything.Go to the following link to download and install Western Digital's Data LifeGuard Tools 11.2 for Windows to correctly configure your hard drive.

http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp?cxml=n&pid=15&swid=1

Remember...setting up your new hard drive correctly may entail reformatting the hard drive...Backup...Backup...Backup!Thanks for your help. The Data Lifeguard Tools program knows the correct size after looking for information about it. But if I want to set up my harddrive I can't because the hard drive is my windows drive. It says to use the DOS program, so should I just burn that onto a CD and go from there? There are two Data LifeGuard versions...Windows and DOS.

If after installing the Windows version...it recommends using the DOS version, then download and use it.

However, I've never used the DOS utlility...sorry.

Whatever you choose...do a backup just in CASE you have to reinstall Windows.

Better safe than sorry.  Let us know how it goes...okay?Will do; I'll do it first thing tomorrow.I finally got around to doing it and when I turned my computer on after putting the image file on a CD, all that comes up is "No Operating System".

I could not have possibly done anything wrong, so what is the problem?

Solve : Not able to play MPEG?

Answer»

OS windows xp home ed

I cannot play mpeg videos in either real player or WMP. I have updated my drivers, re-installed both players more than once.
The files are not corrupt or damaged as they play on Quicktime.

please can any one help me as its driving me crazy!!!!

Regards

PedroDo you get any error messages when you try to play them in WMP? If so, what are they? If it mentions anything about decoders or decompressors, or missing codec, try getting DivX from here.Hi Dilbert,
No there is no error code given it just says it has encountered a problem.
Also I have already downloaded all the DivX suite and it hasn't made any difference.

Regards
PedroTwo other things:

1. What version of WMP?

2. Can you play .wav, .mp3, or anything like that in WMP?WMP 11
No problem with MP3, WAV. AVI. etc

PedroDivX is one codec, but this one is for MPEG files. Let me know if this helps:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Stinkys-MPEG-Codec-Download-5661.htmlI've always used ffdshow, and it's worked great.

Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ffdshow
Download: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshowSorry guys but neither of these worked. Next thing to try is a 2lb lump hammer lol!

I don't understand why mpegs play in quicktime but nothing else? This is just a guess, but maybe the file is just named wrong, and it isn't a mpeg. Could it be a .mov or something else that's only played in quicktime? It's possible, but I doubt it. There's a way to check (not necessary):

In the folder with the file, go to Tools > Folder options, then View, then uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".

However, I think if he says it's an MPEG, it is; Quicktime throws a hissy FIT every time you play something besides a .mov file. The file ext on the names are either .mpeg or .mpg but when checking file properties they are showing as file type: movie clip
Being a total BEGINNER and not really computer literate does this confirm your suspicions?

many thanks
pedroDoes the opposite; it proves we are dealing with a MPEG, not a MOV. I'm almost out of ideas. I've got one shot left, and it's a long one: Do you have software for putting music on a Samsung or similar phone? I've read an article where removing that caused it to work.

Like I said, it's a REALLY long shot. But I'll still ask, because I'm stumped. The only other thing I can think of besides the above is to remove WMP 11 and see if it works on WMP 10. Dilbert yu are a computer GOD!!!
I have just uninstalled some old samsung software for an old FONE and it worked!!

You don't know how FRUSTRATING this has been.......many many thanks

Solve : Upgrading from XP 5.1 SP1 to XP 6?

Answer»

For technical reasons I reinstalled Windows XP Home Edition from my original disc (VERSION 2002). I now find that I have XP version 5.1 SP1 and cannot update Internet Explorer Version 6 SP1 to SP2, let alone IE7. Before the reinstallation I was using IE7. Can I update from XP V5.1 to XP V6? Any ideas on how I can update to IE7?

Windows tells me that my version is out of date, but when I go to Windows Update it is unable to install all the files it says are important.SP 2 first...

Then any missing updates...

Then IE 7.Thanks Patio, however I can't even get SP2. I think it's because my XP is version 5.1 and I think I have to have a later version and I don't know how to get it (even though I obviously had a later version before the reinstallation as I had IE7)Try installing IE 6.0, I can E-mail you the installation file if you can't find it on Microsoft.com anymore. I keep it around for Windows 98 machines..Thanks again, Patio.

Since my last communication I have had all sorts of problems. I have finally managed do get XP working (I'm not sure what I did!). Someone sent me a set of instructions for downloading service pack 2 but when it was halfway through updating I received an error MESSAGE telling me that XP had encountered an error and had to close. To cut a long story short, I've finally managed to get XP running but I'm not game to try updating Explorer. My main problem now is that the existance of my sound card is not recognised. I think I'll buy a new PC!Updating SP2 online can cause any number of problems...it's quite easy for a PACKET to get dropped here or there.
Can you contact some local computer stores in your are or check the local libraries for an SP2 CD ? ?
I guarantee this will be a smoother WAY to go...

Where is it ?

On your restore CD. It is not stored on the computer. If there is a hidden restore partition, it acts the same as a restore CD. Wipes the C: partition, reinstalls OS and drivers, etc. Restoring from CD will somtimes obliterate the hidden restore partition. This not the same as SYSTEM restore, which does not restore to original. As far a startup is concerned, you only need explorer and systray. Some services are required for XP to run normally.

Solve : Can't Install Win XP?

Answer»

I burn a copy of every CD I buy. I use the copy for INSTALLATION of the program.

I burned a copy of my new Windows XP CD and used it for installation on a four year old desktop that has Windows 98SE. I received an error message:

Fatal Error:
An error has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing.
One of the components that windows needs to continue could not be installed.
A component's file does not match the verification information present in the component manifest.
Press OK to view the log file.

I have a friend that has a computer service BUSINESS and he sold me an OEM copy. It has never been used and was sealed in the original plastic wrap. He said to insert the CD and follow the instructions and be sure to make NTFS as the file system of choice, which I did. Part way through, after entering my keys, the posted message came up.

I’ve since ran dban and reinstalled Win 98SE and the computer drivers for my audio, video, ethernet and usb devices.

I may TRY installing Win XP using the original copy.

Can anyone explain why I can't install Win XP?

Thanks.
A straight burn copy of an XP CD even if brand new will not GIVE you a good installation CD copy...this is part of Gates's anti-piracy campaign.
How did you do this and what program did you use ? ?The burn program is NTI. It came installed on my Acer laptop.Travel to NTLite 's site and do some research on creating a bootable XP CD...

It supports your burning program.Diagnose your RAM. DOn't upgrade, boot from the CD.I have 256MB ram and it works great with win98SE and it should be enough for XP. How do I diagnose RAM? Quote

Solve : Mup.sys? or should it be f*#@up.sys?

Answer»

How we go again, another Windows crap. My friend has a HP Pavilion dv4000 notebook with WindowsXP (I think it's Pro) preinstalled. One DAY, out of the blue, she tried to boot it up, it just automatically goes into safe mode.  In the safe mode, no matter which option she choose, even the last known configuration, it will just loop back to the safe mode screen again. when choose the boot with commamd prompt, it always stuck at Mup.sys. Also the BSOD will flash for a micro second, can't even read what it says before it returns to the safe mode again. I set the harddrive up as a slave on my Windows XP PC, copied the Mup.sys to her laptop, it didn't HELP. How can I fix this without resort to a complete reinstallation? (She has a lot of school works on the laptop.)

B.If the laptop has a floppy drive then DLoad and create the 6 disk XP set...you can then get to the recovery console.
From there i would try both fixboot and fixmbr though do them one at a time...Schoolwork, even a LOT of it should fit on a flash drive. A complete reinstall may not be a bad idea for a lot of reasons, but it may be avoided by other means. Do you have a real XP CD for that machine? I am not aware that XP Pro came with that model, and HP does not usually provide them, but have a read:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=mup.sysDiagnose memory.Hi,

Thanks all for the reply.

I backed up all my firends's school works to my PC, so I can do a  fresh installation of XP. But the problem now is the CD. She brought this laptop from COMPUSA two years ago, but she dosen't recall it came with a XP or restore CD. I called HP and they told me that she would have to buy it from HP. This really pissed me off. Shouldn't it be mandatory each computer come with an OS? It's like buy a car without an engin. How do they expect people to fix it when things go wrong? -Expecially with this Windows junks. Great, not only one has to pay for Microsoft's junk, one has to pay twice to buy another Microsoft crap in order to fix the first piece trash. Speacking of highway robbery.

All my years using the Mac, I never have this kind of problems. Down with Windows, up with Mac and Linux!

B.Most laptop manuf. will put everything you need for a full factory restore on a hidden partition that will take the machine back to day one....WARNING you will lose all your data with this method.
Travel to HP's site for instructions on how to proceed.

But i'm still not convinced you need to re-install. Did you read my suggestion on the recovery console ? ?
This method should at least make the machine bootable so a proper backup of data can be done.

Also once in the running machine you can disable the mup service which is not needed in her case and that would solve the issue...

Either way.Hi Patio,

I tried the use the console with fixboot and fix mbr, none of them works. As far as the download concern, this laptop doesn't heve a floppy drive. I check out the disk management, it does have a partition around 400 K or so, I will see how I can restore it from there. Personally I don't want to reinstall the whold system all over again either.

B.Try booting with all USB devices unplugged and report back the results...Hi,

There's no USB DEVICE plug in. Well, according to the guy at HP, he said I need to do this: I need to extract the 204M partition on the hard drive, made an img file then burn it as a bootable CD. So I did just that. Now the laptop can start with the CD, boots into DRDOS, OKA, NR. The only thing that is an exe file is WWBMU EXE, I tried and everything is in German, now where do I go from here? Any majic here I can use to fix the harddrive?

By the way, when I cd to the DRDOS directory, everything just zips right by, how can I stop it so that I can see what commands are available?

Thanks.

B.dir /p will let it be seen a page at a time with the spacebar used to move ahead a screen at a time...

Setup should start automatically...if it doesn't then wait for everything to settle down and type setup at the prompt and hit Enter.

I have no idea what programs you listed are because you used acronyms ...the only one i recognise is Dr DOS...can you be more specific ? ?

I also know absolutely no German....Thanks Patio. Problem solved!   I made another thread  of this subject, hopefully it will help someone else.

B.Glad to hear you're fixed up...

Solve : Remove Desktop Item?

Answer»

I unknowingly added a "desktop item" to my Windows Desktop that I know cannot get rid of.

How I did it.  In IE, right clicked while on a web page.  Selected the Set as Desktop Item option - it pasted a piece of the header on the desktop and now I can't get rid of it.

Tried going to the Control Panel to reset the desktop, clean up the desktop, etc.  STILL there.

Any ideas?

Thank you!Did you tru right click...delete?
HOPE this helps
I can't even select it . . .

thanksYou're gonna have to reformat...

I kid, I kid.  Right-click on your desktop and go to Properties.  Click on the Desktop tab and then click on the Customize Desktop button.  That will bring up another window.  Click on the Web tab.  Uncheck anything that's checked and OK out of the windows.  Does this help?reformat!  arghhhhh!

Tried the right click -  Customize Desktop button - still showing on the desktop - called an "active desktop item"  does this make  difference or help any?

Thanks!Okay - I finally "got it"  YES, properties, desktop, customize desktop, web WORKED

Thank you for the helpAwesome, I'm glad it worked.

And sorry 'bout the reformat joke.  I was in a weird mood this MORNING.  Ha.Thanks again!  I was without sleep a BIT myself this morning!

At least it is solved!

Solve : Keyboard Mouse?

Answer»

Oh, my apologies! I misunderstood that one. Thanks for the clarification.

OK, most of us use multiple USB ports -- one for the camera, one for the mouse. That makes this whole problem ridiculously easy to solve. Complications arise when only one USB port is available. The best SOLUTION is to buy a USB hub. Much as I despise using Wikipedia, good information on it can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_hub

A USB hub that allows 4 devices at a time can be had for $20.00 USD. Of course, more is more expensive, less is less so. Yes, it costs, but it alleviates the headache of worrying about PS2 adapters, getting all that crud to work with a new(ish) laptop, and the inherent inefficiency involved with a PS2 connection.

Alternatively, you could find and borrow a computer with multiple USB ports -- and if you have more than one, that solves it ever more easily.

Again, sorry about the confusion. If you choose to get a USB hub, I strongly reccomend that you get one that is externally powered. Avoid future problems with the USB port providing insufficient power. Quote

OK, now in manual that came with my mouse, it says, "PC desktops use green PS2 adapter.  PC notebooks use black USB connector only."  Does that mean there's no way I can use the PS2 with my notebook?

I can't believe this has gotten this COMPLICATED...a USB to PS2 adapter is what it is no matter what color it is...OK, Dilbert, I will look into getting one of those.  There's a CompUSA nearby.
""PC desktops use green PS2 adapter""

The one you have should work FINE. The color is just to match the port. It is like Dos for Dummies. This is Color Coded for Dummies. And when you get all of those add-on gadgets, suddenly your laptop is not so portable anymore.   Quote
The reason I need to do this is, I just bought a digital camera (over $100) and took a few pics.  To get them onto the computer, I had to remove the handheld mouse from the USB port so I could plug in the camera.  After doing this, the pictures can be viewed by clicking on the Removable Disk icon in My Computere--which I CAN CLICK on using arrows and the enter key--but saved only by **clicking** Edit (at the top of the screen), choosing Select All, and then Save.  I have no way of getting up to Edit without a mouse plugged in.  But I can't plug in the mouse because the camera has to be plugged in.  My brand new camera is useless unless I can turn the keyboard mouse back on.  Thanks much to anyone who tries to help!

Solve : Copy/Paste from email looses text formatting.?

Answer»

Windows 2000
Sometimes I want to save the nicely formatted text body of an email.
I do select and copy, but when I paste it, I have just the plain text - it lost all of it's formatting (font/color/size).
Where are you PASTING your text?  Some programs (such as Notepad) simply don't support this type of format.Notepad, Wordpad -
where should I be pasting it?
... and have you tried it?Try pasting it into Microsoft Word or similar office programs..

Depending on what the E-mail was written in, though. Is it an HTML E-mail you're trying to copy? Quote

Notepad, Wordpad -

... and have you tried it?
Of course I have.  That's how I know.
Try RAPTOR's suggestion; you'll probably have more luck with Word.  But like he said, it depends on the type of e-mail.It works pasting into Word, but not into Wordpad.
I'm using YAHOO web mail reader.

Thanks guys.
(from an ol' fart who's not too old to learn)WordPad will sometimes retain formatting, depending on what it is.  For example, I just copied some text with bold font from an email to WordPad and the bold font carried over to WordPad.  But, WordPad is more limited than Word in what formatting can be copied to it and, as previously stated by others, NotePad retains no formatting.

Sometimes, people want the opposite effect; they want formatting NOT to be carried over from, say, a web page.  So, copying to NotePad, PERHAPS as an intermediate step to copying to another application, can be used to drop/lose the formatting. Quote

Wordpad will usually display certain fonts, colors, and styles...but it won't always display the proper formatting/layout.  As we've established, Word is your best bet for this.  You could try pasting the content into Word, copying it again, and then pasting it into Wordpad.  But that's a bit of a hassle and I'm really not even sure it would work.  I suppose it's worth a SHOT, though.

my problem is that when i exit a movie or game that takes up the screen by pressing alt-tab or windows and try to enter it again the screen ZOOMS in and i have to exit it. thiis is becoming very fustrating na dif any one can help that WOULD be greatThat will happen.
Don't switch from full screen PROGRAMS, it's not a good idea.
I don't SEE why you would need to anyway.the reason i do is b.c i get a message over msn or another problem i am having is that i dont know how to turn off auto dissconnect for the internetInstead of Alt + tabbing back in, try selecting the programs from the taskbar. They might respond better to that. That may work, yes.
I think you may be best to just log off and turn off/disable any other programs when you are GAMING, this will not distract you and will increase your gaming performance.

Solve : MPEG video file problems?

Hey All......Anyone else out there having problems w/ mpeg files only showing up as an icon that SAYES mpeg, even in thumbnail view?Have you right clicked any of these files and checked their properties ? ?
You MIGHT be saving them wrong to your machine.
More info on your OS etc. where they are from and how you are saving them will be helpful.MPEG video clips come from a sony vid. camera. OS is XP pro /sp2. Thaught maybe it was a wmp11 problem, but rolling back to wmp9 / 10 didnt help.  Also tryd installing winamp.....no go. :-?  Again how are you saving them...to the desktop...a target folder ? ?Video clips are unloaded from camera using Sony software that came w/camera. It allows you to save them to a target folder of your choosing. I have multiple usb hard drives that I USE to store them in. The problem SEEMS to be everywhere, internal and external drives. Then i would suspect the Sony software as the culprit...

What do the file properties of the mpegs show ? ?

Have you TRIED to just copy them using Windows Explorer ? ?

perplexed. The type of file is MPEG movie clip/opens with wmp............camera, when plugged in to usb doesnt show up in my computer or in device manager. It seems I have to use sony picture package software  Not My Computer , Windows Explorer...Start/Run explorer.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this list so here I am looking for a solution for serious comp problem.
Since few months ago my computer STARTED to crash (or better say restart) randomly. First once a week and now 5 or 6 times a day. After each restart it gives the notification:System has recovered from a serious errorr bla bla bla. In event viewer I could find different errors and warnings like:
Events: 7000, 7036, 1003, 57.
How can I solve this problem. Is it my hardware er maybe my RAM? Should I reinstall windows?
Here some specifications of the system:
AMD Athlon XP 3000
2.10GHz, 1GB of RAM
Microsoft Windows XP professional SP2

Display adapter RADEON 9600

Please if anyone can help!
Best,
Der Golem :-?You may want to run ScanDisk, which may FIX a possible disk problem in your NTFS file system

To run Scandisk:
Open "My Computer" (LOCATED on the Startmenu or the Desktop)
Right CLICK the "C" drive (the drive where Windows XP is installed in)
Click "Properties" submenu
Click the "TOOLS" tab
and click the button in the "Scan Disk" area called "Check Now"

It will require a restart to do the whole scan, and the bigger the hard drive, the longer it will take. (Up to quite a few hours!)

Solve : help, cant find files?

Answer» SOMEHOW i have like 30 GB of random crap on my pc, that i cant find/never put on

ok, basically if i go into my computer local disk says "74.9 gb, 400 mb AVAILABLE" i click on it, program files has 10gb inside it, which i know is there/accounted for in games, documents and settings has 59 GB, all the rest have NEAR nothing, so i go into documents/settings.
58.7 GB is all in my c:/documents and settings/Erik folder, but once inside the only folder with more than 50MB is my My documents folder, that has 24 GB, which i know i have/accounted for files

but, where did that 30GB go to? i recently reformatted like 2 weeks ago, and i should only have the 35GB of files i put on, but i have a mystery 30GB of files somewhere i cant find

i don't know how to find the files? i don't wanna format again =[ help!

-oh i have windows xp btwWindows takes up space, too. Plus, all the hidden folders with system files... that'll add up to 30 GB real fast.System restore also takes up space, as does the Indexing service. If you have a 74G HDD with 400M available space it's time to do some housecleaning...i'm impressed that machine is still running. Not only housecleaning, but another drive (working in tandem) might be GOOD. yea, but i deleted like 11 GB worth of data just hours before i got a system warning for haveing to low disk space, i then cleaned up enough to have 400 mb left after i never downloaded installed anything sence i deleted that.
also i know for a fact the other day i had about 30GB left when i installed a GAME it told me remaining disk space on c drive, game wouldnt load so i uninstalled. but i put nothing on my pc since then, and cant find where the files are from takeing up all that spacen/m i figured it out i clicked on properties unchecked hidden/read only and it let me see folder "local_settings" which has 33 GB of files in folder "temp" that didnt delete i guess, well there gone now and all is well

Solve : Low Format of Hard Drive?

Answer»

Hello -

I need to do a low format of my laptop (Toshiba) hard drive.  I bought a utility to help me accomplish this.  ASSUMING I am successful, do I then insert my recovery disk and let it do its work OR do I need to do something else first (FDSK)?

This is a laptop I would like to save BUT may have to replace if this doesn't work.  The serviceman said this needed to be done due to not being able to shut down normally and not being able to complete loading programs.  I don't want to put anymore money into it and would like to learn how to do this.

Appreciate info - thank you!

Frieda    Do you have a Windows CD?  What version of Windows?Thank you for your response.

I have a Toshiba recovery disk that has Win XP Home Edition.

However, I also have a WIN XP Professional that I have NEVER used that I can use.

Frieda

Well, you could use either of those.  Keep in mind the Toshiba recovery disk probably has all DEVICE drivers needed for your computer, while the Win XP Pro CD will not have them and you would probably need to obtain some drivers.  However, I believe, if you went with Win XP Pro, you may be able to use the Toshiba recovery disk as a source of drivers.  If not, you'd need to go out to Toshiba's website and download them.

Unless you have specific reasons to go with Win XP Pro, using the Toshiba recovery disk is likely to be the easier route.  But, with either, you'll need to format the hard drive and you'll need to decide whether to use the FAT32 format or the NTFS format.  Since we're talking about Win XP here and not an older version of Windows, I suggest you choose NTFS unless you have some specific reason for using FAT32.

Just put the CD in the CD drive and start the computer.  If it does not boot from the CD, you may need to access your BIOS and change the default first boot device from hard drive to CD drive.  Once you get it to boot from the CD, follow the prompts on screen.

I hope this works out OK for you.  I'm a little skeptical about what the serviceman told you about the low level formatting being necessary.  But, you might as well proceed with it; it won't hurt ANYTHING to do it.

I forgot to mention that I had reformatted the drive 4-5 times using the Toshiba recovery disk, with the same problems recurring after the formats.  That is probably why he recommended the low format.

I am a novice at this so I may need to check back for help when I begin.

I so appreciate the info you gave!  Thank you!!

Frieda  Why do you want to format the laptop for? If you want remove your personal information from it, the formats should have removed that. If the laptop doesn't work now I doubt a low format would make any difference. Quote

Sounds like he is thinking this might give some extended life to that HDD.

Make sure to look into the cost of a replacement HDD for that laptop before you give up altogether.

Even though you said you don't want to toss a bunch of money at it a reasonably priced new HDD would work fine if the machine is of use to you.Personal info is off of it - just wanted to get it going.  If this doesn't work, then I am going to replace it.

Thanks for all suggestions!

Frieda And, if you replace the hard drive and you find that the computer has something else wrong with it and you end up getting another computer, you could get an external enclosure for that hard drive and then you'll have an external hard drive, a good thing to have for backup purposes. Thanks so much for your help and suggestions!

Frieda  You're more than Welcome. Stop by anytime... Quote
Why do you want to format the laptop for? If you want remove your personal information from it, the formats should have removed that. If the laptop doesn't work now I doubt a low format would make any difference.

This is somewhat true, however, a regular format does not necessarily remove all hard disk drive files, while a low-level format is more thorough.  In either case, depending on who is doing it and how they are doing it...data recovery may still be possible...to an extent.

Low-Level Formatting

"Low-level formatting is the process of outlining the positions of the tracks and sectors on the hard disk, and writing the control structures that define where the tracks and sectors are. This is often called a "true" formatting operation, because it really creates the physical format that defines where the data is stored on the disk. The first time that a low-level format ("LLF") is performed on a hard disk, the disk's platters start out empty. That's the last time the platters will be empty for the life of the drive. If an LLF is done on a disk with data on it already, the data is permanently erased (save heroic data recovery measures which are sometimes possible).

If you've explored other areas of this material describing hard disks, you have learned that modern hard disks are much more precisely designed and built, and much more complicated than older disks. Older disks had the same number of sectors per track, and did not use dedicated controllers. It was necessary for the external controller to do the low-level format, and quite easy to describe the geometry of the drive to the controller so it could do the LLF. Newer disks use many complex internal structures, including zoned bit recording to put more sectors on the outer tracks than the inner ones, and embedded servo data to control the head actuator. They also transparently map out bad sectors. Due to this complexity, all modern hard disks are low-level formatted at the factory for the life of the drive. There's no way for the PC to do an LLF on a modern IDE/ATA or SCSI hard disk, and there's no reason to try to do so.

Not strictly true, you CAN perform a Low Level Format, so long as you use the tools (software) designed specifically for your drive."

High-Level Formatting (Regular)

"After low-level formatting is complete, we have a disk with tracks and sectors--but nothing written on them. High-level formatting is the process of writing the file system structures on the disk that let the disk be used for storing programs and data. If you are using DOS, for example, the DOS FORMAT command performs this work, writing such structures as the master boot record and file allocation tables to the disk. High-level formatting is done after the hard disk has been PARTITIONED, even if only one partition is to be used.

The distinction between high-level formatting and low-level formatting is important. It is not necessary to low-level format a disk to erase it: a high-level format will suffice for most purposes; by wiping out the control structures and writing new ones, the old information is lost and the disk appears as new. (Much of the old data is still on the disk, but the access paths to it have been wiped out.) Under some circumstances a high-level format won't fix problems with the hard disk and a zero-fill utility may be necessary.

Different operating systems use different high-level format programs, because they use different file systems. However, the low-level format, which is the real place where tracks and sectors are recorded, is the same."

Solve : Most applications not starting on startup.?

Answer»

Alright, so. This problem has been going on for a couple weeks, now, and I've just dealt with it. But it's starting to drive me up the wall. SO. Posting it. ^^

I turned my computer on one day to find that, for one (and most noticeably), explorer.exe wasn't running. No desktop, no taskbar, all that good stuff. So I Ctrl+Alt+Del'd and RAN it manually. Which simply opened up My Documents. Still no taskbar, no icons, nothing. So, for two weeks, I've been manually running everything through the Task Manager. Mildly irritating, to say the least.

Upon further use of my computer, I realised a whole lot of things aren't running on startup. For example, my Logitech applications for my mouse/keyboard. So, I decided to go ahead and check the registry to see if anything was messed up. All's well. I can't figure it out. Something's apparently blocking things from starting on startup, but I can't figure out, for the life of me, what.

Let's see. I've run a Window's Repair, I've checked the registry, I've checked msconfig's boot list... I don't know what else to try. I'd just reformat, but my backup partition is full and I REALLY don't feel like rearranging three partitions and transferring a few hundred gigs of data from two to the other. SO, if I can get it fixed otherwise, that'd be wonderful.

Thanks in advance for any HELP.What OS is this?
Do your programs autostart in Safe Mode?
And more importantly...what protection do you have?Windows XP.
I thought the point of Safe Mode was to NOT start anything other than system-critical programs...? No.
McAfee.I was mainly asking the second question because you said that explorer.exe wasn't running, leaving you without a taskbar or anything.  I wanted to see if this might be any different in Safe Mode.  I should've specified that.

McAfee is a decent program (I personally enjoy having SecurityCenter), but it's not the best.  If you're able to save and run documents/files/programs, try taking AVG Free for a spin (in Safe Mode if you can).  Make sure you update it first.

As that generally takes a significant amount of time, perhaps posting a HijackThis log first will help give us a bit of insight.

Someone will hopefully come along shortly with input from a more technical standpoint.

Can you think of any changes you might have made before this problem occured? How did you run a Windows repair ? ? Do you mean a repair install ? ?
Have you TRIED running system file checker ? ?
Start / Run/ sfc /SCANNOW and HIT Enter.Ah, okay. Well, no, I boot in Safe Mode to be faced with a completely black screen with "SAFE MODE" in the corners. That's it.

I ran a file check, to no avail.

The only thing I can think of that might've messed it up (which, actually, I'm fairly confident is what messed it up) is I installed Aston Shell, hated it, uninstalled it. I believe the next boot was when it started. So that's probably the problem. But what could Aston Shell have done to completely cripple my startup list?

If a HijackThis log would be any use, I'll run it and post one. Let me know.

Thanks again.Ah, that explains a lot.  Aston Shell can and will cause these problems if not uninstalled properly.  Reinstall it and then this time, when you uninstall it, use Shell Swapper to set Explorer as your shell.  Reboot and use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall Aston.  See if this fixes your problem.

http://www.astonshell.com/aston/faq.htm#16Ooohhhhh, yeeeaaahhhh. I totally forgot about the shell swapping in Aston Shell because I despised what it did and decided to get rid of it immediately. I definitely would never have thought of that.

It fixed it, by the way. Assuming you didn't guess. ;p

Thanks a ton. ^^

EDIT: Now to find out why Winamp isn't adding songs to the library... >..<Well, I hope you manage to figure it out.  It may be worth it to make a thread over on the software board.

Solve : Booting, Safe Mode in ME?

Answer»

Hello -

We have a Gateway Essential,that had 98SE installed. (Purchased '99 or '00)
After running ScanDisk over many hours, my husband cancelled and closed it. Since I had turned off everything that could be turned off, including the screensaver, I told him to turn it off then on, & they'd be back (except the screensaver)

It came back in Safe Mode - bad desktop picture and a frozen mouse. I've been searching the Net since Saturday for answers, and I think when you're in Safe Mode you're supposed to be able to DO something! No mouse, no toolbars, no "Start."

The problem has something to do with the Registry, which is the message I get.

To complicate things, about 2 years ago we had a major computer meltdown - and it was along the same LINES, but with a broken C drive thrown in. The tech who repaired it did a good job, and "upgraded" us to ME, but I have no backups for it.

I have an Operating System Backup CD and a System Restoration CD (What is the difference bewteen them?) for 98SE. Can I use them, and what would the effect be, mixing Window editions?

I've tried downloading a boot disk on a diskette on my computer and it didn't work on his. I tried burning a CD of the same thing and neither did that work.

His machine will do nothing, just sit there and LOOK big and bulky! GoBack says there's nothing to go back to, and I can get into the BLACK screen area at the beginning but I wouldn't know what to CHANGE. That's where I got the Scanreg message.

Does anyone have a suggestion? Or is 7 years the useful life of a computer?

Many THANKS!

My computer is 8 years old and works fine.

Solve : Can we repair/reinstall XP Pro. from XP Home??

Answer»

Dear Friends,

Now using Windows XP Home, want to reinstall XP Professional. Can we without causing big problem-losing files etc?

The reason is that cant do a new installation cos no drivers for the pc so cant reformat.( cant get the drivers cos I dont hv the model name ).

Download EVEREST Free Edition 2.20 and run it to get a report of everything in your system.  Then, you'll have the information you need to go out and find drivers.yes, i hv done already . actually everesthome cant tell us the main board model name which is required to find out Soltex mainboard drivers.

Just want to know whether XP Home can be reinstalled (replaced) with XP Pro?

thanks.
Is your Win XP Pro CD a full version or upgrade version?  If an upgrade version, then, yes, you COULD do it.  See http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/matrix.mspx

If it's a full version, I believe not, as implied in the aforementioned link, but I'm not absolutely sure about this.  Yes, it is a full-licenced version (XP Pro)

thanks anyway.
JL....... I assume the machine is fully functional now with XP home ....... you should be able to go into the device manager and see exactly which drivers are being used.
Specifically which drivers are you concerned about ?
Why do you wish to replace XP home with XP pro? ( just curious)
What were you planning on doing , installing XP pro on top of XP home ? Thats not a good idea....... unless you were planning on having it on a differant partition.

dl65  Drivers for the mainboard, Sir.

I would LIKE to CHANGE XP Home to XP Pro. to use this pc as a server, not only that like to run XP Pro. that I already bought, if not , not in use.

By the way, u have any idea how can I know my mainboard model name?
Dont tell me system spy software, please. they cant tell the model name which I require to find out the drivers. If I can know the model name, everything will have sorted out.

Thanks. Quote

Hmmm ..., "system spy software"?  Are you referring to Everest Home that I mentioned in a previous post?  Don't worry, it's not spyware.  LOL. And, it definitely DOES reveal the motherboard model.

It doesn't always know what kind of motherboard is being used.  I spent a week trying to figure out what kind of motherboard I had.  Everest and two other SIMILAR programs listed my mother board as Unknown.  It wasn't until I snooped around the Gateway site for an hour when I finally discovered what it was.  JL may need to visit his PC manufacturer's site if he's having trouble determining the model.OK, Chris, thanks for pointing that out.  Hmmm, I wonder if JL might possibly tell us more about his computer, such as brand and model.   An Everest alternative...

Solve : I OS suggestion for laptop w/ 2GB HDD?

Answer»

I have an older dell 233 laptop with a 2gb hdd that has win 2000 on it currently - with critical upgrades it takes up most of the hard drive - I WOULD like a suggestion as to what OS I should use for a drive of that size or if perhaps there are some other options - this box will be used by a STUDENT to write papers and use the internet - it does have a 802.11g wireless CARD INSTALLED and only word and excell - any thoughts greatly appreciated2GB?  Ouch.  Can you UPGRADE this machine at all?  If not, you could roll it back to Windows 98, but I don't know if that would be the best option.  Before you go and change the OS, see if you can clear up some space.  Remove any programs on there that aren't needed.  Do a scan with CCleaner and remove some extra junk.  You might also want to run Disk Defragmenter (Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Defragmenter).

Unfortunately, I'm not very familiar with 2000.  But I know that when XP is updated, it leaves behind a lot of files that you don't need.  Perhaps the same is true with 2000?

I booted into safe mode last night and ran avg virus program.Nothing was found so i shut down and went to bed. This morning when the computer was booted back up it said to press F1 or something else to enter set up.When Windows came on i got this.
Windows registry recovery. One of the files containing systems registry data had to be recovered by use of a LOG or alternate copy. The recovery was successful. Then there is Microsoft Windows --the system has recovered from a serious error.BCCode 1000008e plus a few more. Also i get the hardware wizzard telling me to install Raid controller.I've got no idea what this is.I went to add and remove programs to see what Raid was and i got this message.Run DLL as an App has ENCOUNTERED a problem and needs to close.
App name rundll 32.exe. appver512600 2180
The computer has been running fine up till now so i guess it has something to do with being in safe mode.
The system is an Amd Sempron with xp home service pack 2. avg free, spybot , adaware ,ccleaner, windows defender
I hope someone can help fix this problem .ThanksDoes it boot normally (as opposed to SM) / do you have a real Windows cd handy?

Alan <><  Thanks for taking an interest on this subject Allan. I just started up again and it started ok in normal mode .Yes i do have a windows disc that is genuine. The computer has crashed twice today and this hasn't happened since i brought it new 2 years ago.

A new day, and the the problem with the warning from Registry Recovery saying it had to recover data from a log or alternate copy has gone, since I merged back the last issues, ccleaner found.

I can now get into add and remove programs with no trouble.

At start up I still get the message that new hardware has been found and the wizzard wants to find install for Raid controller

I've tried system restore, no difference
Did a disk check on C, says its ok

I notice now that when i open my computer icon that the torch icon comes up and does a search for 20 seconds before any icons come into view

I hope this helps  ROB

where are ya alan ? did you ask me those questions for a particular reason?
one problem i solved by myself but i could do with some advice on the errors i still get.
anyones help would be appreciated
rob Have you tried system restore to an earlier time?yea street1
I restored just after the problems started.Since then i have had to restore again at least 3 TIMES and the problems just wont go away.
My main problem now is that when i open a file and select (send to)the computer lags and sometimes crashes.
I"ve been checking out the topics on formatting and reinstalling xp.
When i feel confident enough I'll give it a go.I think this is my best option unless you have any other sugestions?
Also it takes about 20 seconds to open up My Computer folder. It just sits there with torch seaching. Everything else opens up with no probs.
        catch ya later, :-? Rob

Before you resort to a reformat and reinstall it may be worthwhile to try this:

Goto start/run and type sfc /scannow (note space between c and /), when prompted insert you Windows CD and allow to complete. This restores any missing files from your CD to your windows installation. Thanks Buscrew
Will definitely try that before anything else
Best suggestion I've had yet Sorry for not getting back to you sooner Bob.  I run a tight ship and sometimes I'm on the forum for only a few minutes.

Take buscrews advice and run sfc.  As a last resort you may have to WIPE and reinstall.  I hope thats not the case for you.

Alan <><  Thanks for that Buscrew,

I did what ya said and hoped for a good result but still no good.
When trying to get on the net just now the computer would not recognise my modem
I had to do a system restore to get it to work for me

When it booted up i get the message (one of the files containing systems registry data had to be recovered ty use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful)
This was an earlier problem but dissappeared.

Any thing else I can try? thanks Rob :-?

Solve : Please help Win 98?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a friend who has a fairly old computer that she wants to GET working for her KIDS to be able to play games.
The cpu is inside and all the ports are usb.
When you start up, before the start up menu, a message comes up saying that a NEW usb hardware has been detected and searching for installation components etc.  At this point the mouse, keyboard and cntrl-alt-del does not work, you can only switch off manually.
In safe mode everything works perfectly.
I checked device manager and the only fault I could find was that there were two mice installed.  I DELETED one,but no luck.
I also tried to restore the registry to no avail.
It doesn't matter if we loose all saved info, as long as we can get it working.
How can I relace normal mode with safe mode?
Or as a last resort what is the correct command/parameter in msdos to format?
Any ideas?

Thanks
kdTry starting in safe mode, in device manager REMOVE all usb peripherals, and uninstall all usb ports, leaving all peripherals disconnected reboot the PC, allow windows to find and reinstall the usb ports, and connect your mouse and keyboard, if all is well connect any other usb peripherals one by one and wait for the "your device is connected and working properly" message.

Click Start, Run and type %Windir%\INF
Locate the SR.INF file. The file may be shown as SR, if you have configured Windows Explorer to hide known file extensions. To see the file extensions for all file types, then try this:
On the Tools menu in My Computer, click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box.
Right-click the SR.INF file, and then click Install
Windows will now attempt to reinstall System Restore, and may prompt you for the Windows installation source path. Point to %Windir%\ServicePackFiles folder, or insert your slipstreamed Windows XP (matching the Service Pack level of your system.)
System Restore CORE files will be reinstalled. Restart Windows when prompted
