Solve : No Administrator group, no users, can't log in XP? |
Answer» OS is XP Pro SP2, or it was until yesterday. I did a hard shut-down 2 days ago after the computer hung, and when I rebooted, I got the Welcome screen with no users listed. Tried to boot into administrator account in safe mode, no GO - no password entered, didn't work, the real password entered, didn't work. I get the login screen and when I try to enter Administrator, it gives me "The local policy of this system does not allow you to LOGON interactively." Okay, so the only way I found to actually access the desktop in any way was to try a repair/reinstall from the CD-ROM. The CD-ROM is SP1. The problem did not go away, however. I can get into the desktop by using the new account formed, but that user still does not show up in User Accounts. If I try to make a new user, I get the error message that the admin group does not exist. So to all intents and purposes, I have no administrator privileges at all, and cannot EVEN standby, only log off, which I won't do because then I wouldn't be able to get back into the files. |

Solve : USB External hard drive not recognized? |
Answer» Greetings to the Group - While copying files from the pc to the external hd, the power went out. Since then, the pc won't recognize the USB external hd, even though the USB works other applications fine. And it doesn't make any difference which port I use for the external hd, the pc won't find it. I ran the diskmgmt.msc program and it doesn't find the hd either. All I GET is the little icon by the clock to "safely remove hardware". When the hd is on, the system won't run other applications, like a brower, the RUN program, Control Panel etc. What happened and how can I fix this? All help is appreciated. Yes, this is a working pc. I am only trying to hook up the hd from my external case as a slave to the regular hd, as suggested by this groupto check it out as it's not recognized through the USB. It's the jumper setting I don't know what to do. I already hooked it up but the pc wouldn't boot probably due to the jumper setting, I guess. But the pc works fine. Describe the hard drive that you removed from the external enclosure, and are now trying to use as a slave. Manufacturer? Model number? Any and all descriptive info..... Note above, Patio said you need to visit the manufacturer's website. There, you should be able to get a diagram and/or description of how to set the jumper. If you can identify the drive - exactly - to the folks here, they might be able to assist you further. I hope this helps. The hd (USB external hd) is a WD WD2000 WD Caviar SE, model WD2000JB. As for the jumper. what do I plug in there? I don't know what this jumper is for. I am trying to test it in the pc so I hope to access it. I alaready hooked this up but it didn't work. All I did was to plug in the ribbon cable and the regular plug (power I think). I do have an extra plug there for an extra hd. I see the diagram on the hd for the jumper setting, but what do I do with it? |

Solve : computer has frozen going into safe mode? |
Answer» I recently noticed a bunch of spywaure problems on my computer. I tried downlloadin spybot to erase the p roblems, but found out to get rid of the problems I needed to boot up in SAFE mode. When I went into msconfig I checked the box to boot into safe mode. When I restarted my computer it was blank screen. Will not restart. HellllllllllllllpYou don't need to use msconfig to boot into safe mode. I have NO idea what you have done, but if you have system restore, do that. Safe Modew is F8 several times BEFORE the Windows logo.I tried using the F8 key. It didn the same thing as it's doing now. Stupid me didn't figure out that if it was doing it with the F8 key, it would probably do it if I checked the box boot.ini. Now it TRIES to do it everytime I turn on my computer, and all I get is a black screen. What are the specifics of the computer? Do you have a real Windows CD that says Microsoft all over it?GX1_Man, |

Solve : Cant start in safe mode / Start up slow down :(? |
Answer» Ive recently had a problem with my motherboard and had to replace it. When i replaced it i noticed a ton of things had changed and want to know if i can have them PLACED back to normal maybe? For 1 when i start up my computer everything is fine until it says "Windows is starting up". It says that for about 20 seconds before ACTUALLY letting me see the users LOGIN screen. Even when i type in the password it sort of lags not to mention the whole computer is dramatically slower in terms of running processes. (when i burn a disk it takes about 80% of cpu) which never has HAPPENED before! I'm positive my ram is installed in the right slots and in the correct order and just don't understand why it could be happening ? |

Solve : DirectX not working? |
Answer» I went to launch Power DVD this evening and got an error message on my system (laptop) I haven't seen before. It essentially said that DirectX was not enabled and that I should launch DXDiag.exe, and enable DirectX on the DISPLAY tab. I should point out that I use this system many hours each day, every day, and was using this very program as recently as yesterday without getting this error message (which I had also never even seen before). Before I ran DXDIAG I went ahead and installed the most recent version of DirectX even though I was already running 9.0c. I then ran DXDIAG and went to the DISPLAY tab only to find out that the 3 buttons related to DirectX and Direct3D were grayed out and unclickable. I don't remember exactly what the verbage was next to each button, but it essentially said that DirectX was not supported or not active. The FILES tab says there are no problems though, and everything else looks fine except that it's simply not active and cannot be enabled or disabled. Again, this error message was NOT occuring even 24 hours ago, so something has happened. I believe the only thing I've installed since then was Tunebite 4.x, which does utilize DirectX. You could be wrong about the Tunebite product as this changes codecs and other components for graphics and sound which is the main factor in DirectX that is what it is a group of codecs certified by microsoft. There are a few web notes regarding this product, like a lot of this kind of utility, its good when it works but a pain when its going wrong. Not sure how I'm wrong, I said that Tunebite DOES utilize DirectX... I had actually already uninstalled it with no change before you posted. I tried your additional suggestions with no change as well. New info: Not only do I have multiple hard drives with backups on them, I also have two identical laptops so I can easily do side by side comparisons. With my current, problematic drive installed in one system and my most recent backup from about 6 months ago installed in the second, I ran DXDIAG again and looked for the differences. It turns out that although the FILES tab on both systems indicates that everything is fine, the DISPLAY tab on the malfunctioning system has a warning in the NOTES section that is not present on the second system with the most recent backup. It states that the file "ATI2DVAG" is not digitally signed etc. etc. (my graphic driver of course). The thing is, this is the most recent graphic driver for this system and it has not changed for a very long time (a couple years). More importantly, the SAME graphic driver and files are installed on both the good (for lack of a better word) system and the bad one. Since the VGA drivers are identical and everything is working fine on the backup drive/OS, it occurs to me that a recent XP update has likely caused DXDIAG to label my graphic driver as not being digitally signed and therefore it's deactivating DirectX needlessly. Since the backup drive has been sidelined for some months, it doesn't have all the most recent updates yet, which would explain why it would behave DIFFERENTLY. This has me concerned because if this is what's happened, and I believe it is, then as SOON as the mystery update gets installed, it's going to deactivate DirectX on the backup drive as well. There must be a way to override the FLAG that DX has thrown as a result of it thinking (perhaps correctly) that the graphic driver is not digitally signed. It clearly is irrelevant since everything is working perfectly on the backup drive. If any DirectX experts out there have some input I'd greatly appreciate it, this is really screwing things up for me and reverting to a backup drive is not only going to be a major pain, but it's going to be pointless if the same thing happens to it the moment it gets the update. FYI, I had NOT recently installed any DirectX updates to the problematic system prior to this problem occuring. As I stated previously, I did install the most recent version of 9.0C AFTER the problem occurred as a means of trying to resolve it. The only thing that had transpired prior to this problem occuring was that I installed Tunbite 4.x, but uninstalling it was of no benefit. |

Solve : DirectX problem - help!!? |
Answer» My SON was trying to install "NFS Carbon", amongst other things. He probably messed up my directX files that was installed. I am using XP, and the DirectX version is 9.0b, It will not install 9.0c, even THOUGH it says so. I picked up a problem with a "qasf.dll" file. And windows says its an older version. I dont think its a good idea to uninstall directX. Can I DELETE this file and replace it with the correct version?GO here and download it from there, does that install properly? And yes, to repair DirectX the previous version should be uninstalled first... Quote And yes, to repair DirectX the previous version should be uninstalled first...It normally can't be uninstalled, can it? That's what I see at http://ask-leo.com/how_can_i_uninstall_directx_9.html. And, Microsoft's page for DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer says, "The DirectX runtime cannot be uninstalled. Solve : An error occur while formatting computer? |
Answer» Hi everyone, I was formatting my computer and suddenly this message appeared on the screen. A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent further damage to your computer. KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: CHECK to make sure any new HARDWARE or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows update you might need. If problems continue, disable or REMOVE any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, PRESS F8 to select Advance Startup options, and then select safe mode. Technical Information: *** STOP: 0x0000007A (0xC03E619C, 0xC0000185, 0xF9867156, 0x0C1EF860) *** Ntfs.sys – Address F9867156 base at F980D000, DateStamp 41107eea Beginning dump of physical memory Physical memory dump completes. Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance. My computer specifications are shown below: Pentium 4 1.6 GHz Asus Motherboard 256 MB RAM 20 GB hard disk 32 MB AGP graphics card Now when I start the computer, I am unable to load the operating system. This happens because the error above occurred while I was formatting and the installation of windows is not complete. I tried installing the Windows XP with SP2 again but the same error message appears. I would really appreciate it if SOMEONE could tell me how to rectify this problem. Thanks a lot in advance. Here is a page you might want to read... http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/prork/prhd_exe_qofl.mspx?mfr=true Although it's for Windows 2000, it actually applies to Windows XP as well. If you don't believe me...Google it. Hi Saviour, Thanks for the reply. I read the link that you gave me. According to the site, the problem that I am facing could be a bad sector on the hard disk. The trouble now is that I am unable to run ‘check disk’ because there is no operating system installed on the computer. I regret not running ‘check disk’ before formatting. So I tried a fresh install of the Windows XP again, but the same error message keeps appearing. In a desperate attempt, I tried installing Windows 98 but the installation was aborted. Is there anyway to check the hard disk through the BIOS? Or is there any other way I could “save” my hard disk instead of buying a new one? this message showing while in a formatting situation is possibly regarding a faulty memory module or even a dislodged module, remove and reseat each moduleDLoad and run that HDD manufacturers diagnostics on that drive...an OS need not be present to do this. |

Solve : Activate.MSI? |
Answer» When I switch on my computer (running XP SP2 Professional), a window opens saying 'Windows Installer preparing to install'. Then it says: 'Please wait while windows configures Sonic Activation Module. Insert the disc and click OK'. After this it says: 'Try to find the package Activate.MSI in a folder from which you can install the product Sonic Activation Module'. I click to cancel, but the window repeatedly re-appears. After about ten CANCELLATIONS it eventually stops and the machine WORKS normally from then on. I looked at ROXIO's Knowledgebase site, where it gives three methods of getting rid of this problem, but none of them have worked. There is a so-called hotfix which has no effect, and doing a clean uninstall caused the machine to crash, needing a safe mode START and system restore to get things going normally again. I also tried uninstalling Sonic MyDVD, but that didn't help either. |

May be a good IDEA to leave it if that's what you're supposed to do, though I don't see why you shouldn't change your password. |

Solve : Install windows XP off a thumb drive?? |
Answer» Quote Judging by the replies posted at that site it appears only about one in five were successful with his method. Depending on what Tinygnome has got to lose, they can STILL try it. Or they could attempt to install DamnSmallLinux onto a USB drive after making an .ISO image of their Windows Installation CD and putting it on some kind of media. From within Linux, mount the image and try to run the installer under WINE? Or attempt something involving PXE. Just spouting ideas. [EDIT]Okay, the forum software has a wordfilter set (useless) that is filtering D*amnSmallLinux (remove the asterisk) into "darnSmallLinux" and even BROKE the LINK. Here are the instructions to place "that distribution" of Linux onto a thumbdrive[/edit]WELL i ended up getting an external optical drive to work, (it took forever and i had to re-do it 3 times) i tried some other methods on the thumb drive but, the computer wouldn't recognize the *censored* thumb drive! oh well its all good now |
