Solve : Ghost hdd image to larger hdd?

Answer»

I searched the site . and a few other places what I want to do is, I have a 10gig hd with WINDOWS 2000 i want to copy it to a 20gig hd so that the 20gig will be the MASTER... I believe there is WAYS to do it but the program I used copied the whole image so my 20gig was only 9.55 .

Anyone know of Open source that is somewhat simple???

thnx in Avd..
Hello there FB21. This should help for the moment.

15DayFreeTrialWhat about the utilities from the new drive manufacturer? If I REMEMBER correctly Acronis will copy an image to any size drive (larger or smaller than the original) and use the entire partition of the new drive, not just the image size.  I think...

Alan <><

You can download it from here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?DEPA=0&type=&Description=Acronis&Submit=ENE&N=0&Ntk=all

Solve : 2 Computer Problems?

System Setup

4400 dual core AMD
2x512 mb ram
A8N32 SLI motherboard Asus
Leadtek PX 7900GTX TDH Graphics card 512MB 256 BIT
580 power supply

I am starting up new drive i formated it.

Current hardrive is a 200GB and when i try to install or quickpar something it freezes perma and or reboots randomly

So i got this 250 and am trying to install windows on it but when it boots up it says push any key to boot from CD i push a key but nothing happens once the 5 dots after it show.

push any key to boot from cd .....

But if i push a key before the 5 dots go then it says inspecting your computers hardware and configuration but the screen stays black forever.

I ran MEMTEST86 to see if my ram was okay and it was i ALSO ran BurninTest which tested my Processor, Vid card and Ram and nothing came up wrong with them.

Currently have my 3.5 floppy disconnected.
And it is disabled in my bios.
I also am using a non wireless keyboard.

Here are the errors in my Event viewer i think associated with the problems

Id like to either be able to install windows on this new hardrive or to get my comp to stop crashing or freezing perma.

I don't KNOW what that means, but is the hard drive seen correctly in the BIOS? Is it the only drive in the machine? It should be for now. Is it jumpered correctly? Is this a LEGAL version of Windows? Home or Pro? Has this machine ever worked correctly?

There was no NEED to format a new drive beyond what happens during the Windows install.

http://www.gennersales.co.uk/recovery/acer.htmhttp://www.acer.com.cn/upload/info/72/Acer%20eRecovery%20Management%20for%20CSD.pdfThe disks, if you can still make  them, are only for that machine. You could probably NEVER get it to install on another and even if you could it would be illegal.

Solve : System very crappy after reformat?

Answer»

After i reformatted my system i had a clean install with service pack 1.. i knew service pack 1 had many faults so i quickly installed a updated firewall and antivirus. I Downloaded service pack 2 from a website and all went normal, but when i restarted my computer was very SLOW. and svchost.exe took up usually 99% of the processor and now everytime i startup i have to end svchost.exe to STOP my system from LAGGING. When i end the process nothing happens.. theres two svchost.exe's in my system and both are registered as system files. When i end the one taking up 99% of the CPU it reappears taking up no CPU space at all.. Please help meWhat Website did you download service pack 2 from?i forgot.. they had a direct link to microsoft to download it too.. my. Avast! just found Adware. Its all gone now.. anyways. they had a direct DL link to microsoft and it was their service pack 2.. the other time i got service pack 2 through microsoft update and it was fine  :-?
Edit: okay this is weird i couldnt hear any SOUND at all until i rebooted.. the only sound i could hear is when you press the backspace button when theres nothing in the text boxMore info on your system specs and the posse will arrive shortly...You Dont have to hack me... lol i can remember it by heart

Compaq Presario SR1110NX
Intel Celeron D 2.53 GHZ Processor with 533mhz speed
Evga Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 128MB DX8 Level Graphics card
256 Megabytes of RAM
Windows XP Service Pack 2

The svchost seems to be related to windows update. So i disabled windows update.. because when i end the process the computer forgets that i have onboard sound..
and i know by these specs this isint a computer. This is a tragedy i wanted a new one anyway

I don't know much about computer's,if i didn't say the right one it's the top dvd/cd reader.

When ever i put a DISK in there it keeps ejecting them.I don't know what caused this problem.Anybody wanna help me out here?So you put in a disk, close the tray, and it is PROMPTLY ejected?
I know I shouldn't laugh, but do you see the FUNNY side?
Anyway.
Has it always been like this?
If not, what happened or changed before this started?
What operating system is this?
I guess by your name it's XP.  Does it have SP2?  And the latest updates? Quote

I laughed about it for abit i guess.

It just started doing this today.I don't know what caused it i was away for a day.
I have Sp2 and im checking right now if there is any new updates. After you've checked for updates, check the hardware.
Is this a pre-built PC?
If so, what make and model?
If it's a custom-built PC, what components?
Are there any problems shown in device manager? There isn't any problems in the device manager.

But like i said,i don't know much about computers.
It's a pre built pc i guess. My guess is it's a hp paviolion a1350n,don't know if that helps. Is it STILL under warranty? It may be a hardware issue that you cannot fix.Yes it's still under warranty.Take it back.  The drive is defective.

Solve : Office 200x stalls during install behind Win XP?

Answer»

I had to perform a catastrophic reload of my c: drive.  The OS (Win XP SP2) went ok.  I started to reload Office and the fun started.  The INSTALLATION stalls because it "appears" Windows Installer cannot locate and/or read .dll or .exe files among others from the CD.  I am getting a message similar to "..error reading d:\MSOffice\... .dll; if you are loading from CD please ensure you can locate and access file..."

Has anyone seen this before?  If so, what are my options?

BeakerHave you installed any other programs from CD since you did the fresh installation of Windows?  Did that work OK?  What is Office 200x?  What happened when you put the Office CD in the CD drive?  Did the installation automatically START, before the error message occurred?  Does you CD drive show up in My Computer?

yes, I have loaded my digital camera software PLUS my ACCOUNTING software.  No problems.  Office 200x means Office 2000 or Office 2003.  I tried both apps and had very similar error messages.  Other than trying to load this app, I have no other issues with the machine.  I have not noticed any other problems except when loading Office 200x.I can't say for sure but I'm THINKING you may need to Reinstall Windows Installer.  See "The Windows Installer service could not be accessed" error message when you try to install Office" for info. And also clean that Office CD with a soft lint-free cloth...And then let us know. But do both of the above suggestions.  So far no good.  I pulled an old laptop out of retirement, loaded XP and still could not load Office.  However, I just loaded this CD (Office 2003) on my wife's laptop just a few months ago.  The CD has not been in any other machine since.

I am starting over now this morning on a clean hard drive.

??Did you install SP4 plus the rollout before all the other stuff?

Alan <><  The last time i had a stubborn Office install i had to copy the CD contents entirely to another partition on the HDD and run setup from there...it worked without a hitch...

Solve : XP Pro SP2 stalls after loading?

Answer»

I've just installed a new HDD & Ghosted all data from my original C drive, and all seemed to go WELL. BIOS and jumpers were set with new 120Gb as Master and original 40Gb as Slave with the intention of then formatting the old disk. Windows however hasn't seen the change, and still shows the 40 Gb as C and the 120Gb as D.

Before formatting the original, I tried a BOOT up with the old disk disconected and whilst XP apears to load as normal it then goes into a blue screen with a small XP logo - and there it stays.

Is there something I've omitted to do or has the Ghost failed?  My friendly IT engineer assured me that was all there was to it, but telephone calls are not now being returned !! With the original disk reconnected it's all working, but obviously the data is duplicated on both (except for that which is necessary to open the OS)

Should I format the new disk and start again? I really would welcome some advice please.

LesOn the blue screen was there any messages on there or was it just the XP logo?

Gizmo73I use Acronis, not Ghost, and it has no issues with this. Did you verify the image when it was created? Any error messages would be helpful as well.Gizmo - No messages, it goes through the loading sequence as normal, but then just hangs with a dark blue band top and bottom and a small XP logo in the middle.

GX1 - I'm afraid I didn't see an option to verify and when I came back to the screen after a bite of lunch it was showing complete, with no messages.

Thanks both for the response, I have Paragon Drive Copy available if I go through the PROCESS  again, it was just that I was persuaded to use a copy of Ghost because it is reliable !!!

LesAcronis True Image < $35 from www.newegg.com

It will do all of that and a lot more and no surprises.  When you prepped the new HDD did you REMEMBER to set it as active ? ?

I would only hook up the new HDD until you're fixed up to prevent the BIOS from getting confused...

patio.  8-)Just to close this thread and to thank you guys who responded to my problem, I am finally up and running again, although what actually caused it in the first instant I still don't know.

Despite stripping eveything out and reseating, checking all wiring connections and trying to start on the bare necessities it just got worse and worse, finally shutting down within seconds. I couldn't even get into BIOS. My son (based the other side of the world in OZ) suggested that it was likely to be CPU overheating, and after cleaning the face and reseating with thermal paste - which I had not used originally - it fired up as if there had NEVER been a problem, and has ran non stop for a couple of days now.

So thanks again to Gizmo and GX1 for their input, and I can put my 10 year old dinasoar back into hibernation again.

Les H.
Glad you are all fixed up and thanks for posting back.

Solve : how do i reset default start up setings?

Answer»

i went into the setup in the first start up of my computer..
i changed a couple things to maybe help computer run better ...but now i can not do anything with it ...
my keyboard no longer works ..mouse..or even monitor...
what i changed was something called fequeincy(spelling)...said to type in freq. from range of 100 to 250... so i changed the 100 to 200.. :-?
so how can i get my puter to work again.... help! :-/
is there a way to restart my computer and have it go into default settings like it was ...my monitor has no signal ..mouse does not work...keyboard does not seem to be working...no lights come on with caps lock or number lock....help!!! I bet you overclocked your computer by accident.
Remove the CMOS battery and leave it out for half an hour or so.
This should clear  the BIOS of your changes.
Then put it back in, and start t up again.
Does it work now?
And while you're doing that, write out 100 times on a piece of PAPER "I must not fool around with things unless I understand them or the consequences could be worse next time"
I do hope that this fixes your problem, but it may be too late.
Have a bit of care next time.giving it a try now....i should have thought of that do to knowing about getting past passwords people forget on there computers...
I have worked alot with them but never did this before i should have not messed with ..or like i normaly do ..read up on it more. 8-)

My wife says you better start writing to me cuz she told me ..i told you not to mess with it if you were not sure what it is going to do...

of course this was a after i did it thinking i knew what it was going to do ...

WELL hope it does work..25 mins to wait.. 8-)There are usually other issues relating to a computer running slowly. Those should always be addressed before even thinking about playing in the BIOS settings ESPECIALLY if youdon't know what you are doing.

As Calum said, you can permanently damage components this way. We'll await your return.Yeah, next time just be more careful and check on what it does before you do it.
Hopefully you didn't fry anything, but you'll have to wait and see.
We'll leave a light on for you.yes removing the battery to reset the saved settings in the start up option did work well...

Thanks again for the reminder about the simple but under thought about battery removal...

Thanks again.. 8-) ace1 Happy to help.
Does it start up OK now?
You didn't fry anything?
I love the smell of burning silicon in the morning . . .no burns..other then dust  :-/  gives me ANOTHER reason to clean out

well back to running on pc INSTEAD of laptop..

thxGood, glad it's working.
Just take care next time, OK?
Use overclocking as a last resort if you need more speed, not as a first.
Clean out that PC well, dust can cause a lot of problems.
Don't use a vacuum cleaner though, many people do and it's not a good idea.
Anyway, you're welcome.
Stop by any time.book marked for sure...

I use COTTON swabs to clean..I am very picky in dust ...and i always take my time...

will check in maybe now and again..

let the knowledge keep spreading
ace1Cool.
See you around then, maybe.

Solve : windows 98 startup problem. virus? or ??

Answer»

My spare computer is running windows 98. Several months ago a problem STARTED where the computer had to be reset several and also I had to restore. Now when I start up the computer it loads to a red norton screen and says the virus software was unable to initialze the virus scanning engine database. The only option is to click ok.
The windows starts to load then shuts down. The start button or icons do not appear.
The cd drives will not run any PROGRAMS and the computer is locked. I am also unable to access safe mode. Please help. I have information on the hard drive that I have to access.
Thank YouOne option is to load Windows into another directory other than the default directory , which is C:\Windows.  That way you get a clean install, can get to your data & SAVE it, then reformat and start new.

I don't understand what that means. THere is no system restore on Windows 98.I had to use the PROGRAM go back to restore to a previous time. Also I am unable to use any other directories. The next step would be to slave that drive into a functional machine and retrieve your data. After that is safe you should format this drive pronto.  yes slave the drive but make shure the sys u r using is fat32 and not ntfs or it wont work to get the in fo off it  ie:win98 will not work with 2000 or higher use 98 or 95 to get infoBad advice again dell guy. Please think carefully about what you are writing BEFORE pressing the "Post" button.

Win 2000 AND XP can read any drive formatted FAT32 which is what Win98 uses.

It's also helpful NOT to dig up old posts. This issue was resolved 10 days ago.

Solve : regedit in .bat file how??

Answer»

I want to run regedit on Windows XP but without going
start->run->regedit
I want to do that by writing a .bat file
what i have to write???
plz helpIt's easier than it SOUNDS. All the BAT NEEDS to include is this:

C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exeActually you don't even need that MUCH as long as it is in the windir directory.

Code: [Select]regedit.exe
That's all you need. I still don't see why you don't just make a shortcut to it???

8-)fffreakAs for why you need "C:\WINDOWS", it's because regedit.exe is not in the root directory; it's in C:\Windows. Also, if the bat were on the desktop, it'd look for regedit.exe on the desktop unless you specify C:\WINDOWS first.

As to the why not make a shortcut... he could, but he'd have to know the location. Which brings me to my first point, ad infinitum. Yeah, I did forget it's not in the root directory, it is in the windir. It would not look for it on the desktop. Test it yourself make a new bat with just that, "regedit.exe" and see what happens.Ah, I see. It does automatically GO to the right folder. Probably because it's a common system command. Oh well. I'm still right in principle: Normally you'd have to. But yes, you are completely correct. Quote

Right in princible

HAHAHA. I'll remember that one Huh? I said principle. :-?No, I just can't spell.

Solve : Win Me won't boot past safe mode screen-How to fix?

On booting my win Me it gets to the safe mode screen, which is frozen on choice #3 safe mode, ; if I hit F5 or shift and F8, only choices possible, it just goes to a flashing CURSOR(-) and never boots. Happened after I was downloading a driver from an oem card reader at Idotconnect. Is it a virus and is it fixable without a full restore? I can't download fixes to that computer cause it won't even boot. Thanks for any help. ......... Thanks to street1: I discovered the problem; the reason it would not boot past the safe mode screen was that my keyboard was not plugged in all the way so it never received the reply to boot in safe mode; when  plugged in, it booted fine; sorry for taking your time.A NONDESTRUCTIVE reinstall may help. :-?

The problems arise when I run Age of Empires II: The Conquerors. Often the game will open and run fine and I'll be able to play a full game with little problems. However, when I try to exit the game and return to windows, my graphics get messed up, as can be seen in the attached file. This is also the case if I try and switch between the game and my desktop or another program mid game. Further STILL, on some occasions the screen may also get messed up whilst the game is loading. Unfortunately, the only soluton I have found is to TURN my laptop off and restart it.

I also noted that the same problem occurred when I tried to increase my screens resolution; I did not have Age of Empires on at that time.

This is an extremely frustrating problem, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Ryan Wain
Hopefully that machine is still under warranty. I think it is heading to the shop. You can try installing your video drivers again, but it looks like a hardware issue. Have you checked your temps also? What he said.
And, don't try switching between full-screen programs, especially games, it can cause that sort of problem.
If there are patches available for the game, get them, it may help.
Does the game support your GPU?
And don't change your resolution, all LCD screens have a native resolution and they don't look good at different ones.i originally had the latest omega drivers. i uninstalled them, and replaced them with the official ATI drivers.

still the same problem...

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your rapid responses...So the problem still occurs with the latest official ATI Mobility drivers?
What are your temps like?
Are there any patches for the game?
Is your GPU supported by the game?
Do other games work OK?i updated the game to the latest version, 1.0c.

i'm not sure what you mean about the GPU, but it is a pretty universal card (Ati Mobility x700) so i'd imagine it would be supported.

I have my suspicions about the temps, but there is no program on my laptop to check it...

and other, higher end games work fine (such as pro evo 6)
Yeah, I guess it would be supported, it's just that some older games don't support notebook cards.
They usually work fine anyway, but sometimes odd things can happen.
As for the temperature . . . how does your laptop feel when gaming, and when idle?
Warm?
Hot?
Cold?
Especially the GPU area - it'll be where the video outputs are, so near the DVI or VGA ports or similar.
Also, Everest may be able to give you some info about the temps. Thanks you so much for your assistance so FAR. I just downloaded everest and did a report, which is attached.

As for my temperatures, the computer is very warm on the left hand side, however, in the area by the tv output etc. it is not warm at all.

ryan.Seems that Everest won't tell you your GPU temps, it may not do that after all, I thought it did but I could be wrong.
Those temps seem strange to me - cool for the CPU and warm for the HDD - what were you doing prior to making the report?
Could you do some gaming (where it doesn't crash) and then make another report?
I'll look up your laptop and see where the GPU is.
It may be on the left where the warm bit is.
Just a thought - is it labelled underneath?
With my laptop, there are 2 compartments, labelled System door and HDD door, yours may be similar or it may not.
Just a thought.Look in your ATI overdrive utility for temperature.Or DLoad speedfan... Quote

Look in your ATI overdrive utility for temperature.
Where's that?Too me it looks like the video settings for the game has been jacked up to a point where your machine can't handle it. Do you have a way to edit the screen settings without opening the game? Try to set them way down and than move them back up one step at a time until you can get the best picture without it going bad.

Solve : MS Paint simple question- please help !?

Answer»

After I enter my text, choosing the color red. I click outside the dotted box to close the command and the red text becomes GREY. The color red is still selected. When the text box is in use my red text is displayed fine but as soon as I exit the command- grey. I checked under Image > Attributes > and "colors" is selected. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know what your problem is there.  I have no problem changing text color when entering text in a text box in Paint and having it stick.  Can you try using Paint on another computer just to make sure this isn't something you're doing wrong as opposed to a glitch in Paint on your computer? Is the bitmap you are editing a monochromatic one? After typing the text, can you use the fill colour ability on the letters? Quote

Is the bitmap you are editing a monochromatic one? After typing the text, can you use the fill colour ability on the letters?

It's a .gif   and when I looked at the attributes if photoshop it says it has 8-bit color. No the fill colour is just another shade of grey over it again. Earlier I was able to fill the letters in photoshop to red. Now the same thing OCCURS as in paint. The red filler just over laps another shade of grey over the letters.

To Soybean- no this is the only pc.Very odd.

Does this mean it's only this one picture file that is affected? I would be tempted to go to 100% zoom, take a screenshot, and paste into a fresh image file.Try this. Go to Control Panel, Add or REMOVE Program, and click on Add/Remove WINDOWS Components (on the left side of the panel).  Select Accessories and Utilities.  Click on Details. Select Accessories.  Click on Details. Uncheck the box for Paint, click OK, and close the panel. Now, reverse the procedure and install Paint. Then, open Paint and try it again.  Problem solved? Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I feel it's very odd..
did u try such thing with another gif file??
If for all gif file it's happening like that, then can u upload any such file so that i can check in my systemOk...the problem is that your file is a .gif  This type of file keeps it own color table. This color table can be changed and played with to cut down on the file size with programs like Photoshop. In your case it was striped of colors that were not needed for this image. You can't edit or add colors to this image until you convert it to a .jpg format. Than you will need to change your mode in Photoshop to RGB. This will let you add colors and than if you need it still in a .gif format you sill need to resave it as a .gif. Quote

Since Photoshop has been introduced into this discussion, can you clarify one point?  When I first read your original POST, I was under the impression you were talking about a new object being created in Paint, not an image that had also been manipulated in another program, such as Photoshop.  So, can you simply open Paint and enter colored text into a new/blank object and save it with those colors being retained?

And, I believe the format should make no difference here.

Solve : Delete MSN Messenger?

Answer»

I wanted to delete MSN messenger off my computer but couldn't find it in the Add or Remove Programs section of Control Panel. And when I try to delete the 'Messenger' FOLDER in Program Files I get this error message: 'Cannot delete msmsgs: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again'. But I'm not signed in and I don't have the program open. ?? Can anyone tell me how to delete it?Is there a RUNNING process called msmsgs.exe when you press "ctrl+alt+delete"? If there is right click it and go to end task, then try to delete it. And why do you want to delete it it isn't hurting anything by existing. Just disable it in msconfig. Click start->run->type "msconfig" then click the startup tab and uncheck where it says msmsgs, then click ok and reboot.

8-)fffreak^^thanksOr DLoad and run " Shoot the Messenger"...Does that turn off MSN messenger too?
I THOUGHT it just affected the built in Messenger service.
Could be wrong though . . .As stated, look for the process msmsgs.exe, and end it. Or look for the messenger icon in the system tray.. left-click>exit messenger. Then try and delete the folder; if the error still prevails, try deletion in safe mode. It's already sorted.
At least, I GUESS it is, because they thanked fffreak for what he said, so I assume they're THANKING him because what he said fixed it for them.

Solve : Registry Problem with SP2?

Answer»

I am unable to load SP2. The problem seems to be that the system is unable to backup certain registry keys. The setupapi.log shows that it is unable to backup .cpp\persistenthandler, .cxx\persistent handler, and .def\persistenthandler. I have changed the permision of these keys per the Microsoft instructions but it still hangs up and says "Access Denied" after loading SP2.You have managed to get INFECTED with a nasty worm...run all your protection programs in safemode and then DLoad and run Hijack This and post the log here...
List all the scans you ran.Not sure what running protection programs in safemode means.  I run NOD32. Here is the logfile from Hijack This:

If you are the original owner HP may send you one for a small fee, if they are still available.Everyone needs a real Windows CD eventually. This may be your time. You should ONLY use drivers from the HP site. You can find them based on your model number.

Solve : Hard Drive conversion?

Answer»

I am running a PC with ME as the OS.ME is not very co-operative with USB plug and play also I have problems with various software programmes.I also have a LAPTOP running XP and everything that will not run on ME runs fine on the laptop with XP.
Now the crunch line-I have been given a Hitachi hard drive (2yrs old) which has been wiped of all personal data leaving just XP(+SP2).If I connect it to my PC, it appears to recognise the hard drive and ASKS if would like to start normally/safe mode etc etc.At this point there appears a large list of Windows items but that is all.I have the original COA etc for the updates but I think I am missing  something a bit more critical.I was told by a computer clinic that my system would easily cope with XP.Any help would be APPRECIATED "but" I am a touch limited in the technical department. So what do you want to do?
Use this Hitachi drive on another PC?
I don't quite understand what you want to do and what the problem is, sorry. You say you "have the original COA etc for the updates."  So, does that mean no one ELSE is using that edition of Windows?  If someone else is using another installation of Windows based on that COA that you got with the drive, then you don't have a legal license to the software.  And, you won't be able to do the proper registration and get all updates.

Most likely, the reason you're seeing the screen that "asks if you would like to start normally/safe mode" is that you don't have drivers installed for the motherboard that you're now trying to use that hard drive with.  Have you tried a normal start?  Did you succeed?  Did you see a Found New Hardware wizard or some other prompts appear when you started the computer?  Have you LOOKED in Device Manager to see whether some devices are marked with a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark inside it?

Solve : problem booting up.......?

Answer»

My GIRLFRIENDS computer isn't booting right. It starts up fine 'till it gets to the Windows 98 logo. From their it GOES to the Microsoft REGISTRY Checker. 1st it says backing up system files......then restoring system files.......then it says, "windows found an error in your system files and restored a recent backup of the files to fix the problem". When I restart, it brings me back to the same thing all over again. Can anyone help? She's running Windows 98 the second edition.Does she have a Win98 CD anywhere ? ?
If so there is a non-destructive re-installation method...She has the Operating System Recovery CD that came with the comp. Where do I go from their? Is there any important data to back up FIRST? A restore disk will erase the hard drive. What is the computer make/model?It's a Micron-Millennia MAX GS 133. Any other info required? Quote

Is there any important data to back up first? A restore disk will erase the hard drive. What is the computer make/model?
Yes, I can take off any info I need, by hooking it up to another comp. It's a Micron computer, Millennia MAX GS133.I would back up the data and do a ful reinstall with that CD. That can fix an awful lot of problems.  Ok, But if you read the first message I POSTED. How do I go about booting from the cd-rom? I tried BIOS, but since it's a Micron computer, it won't let me change anything in that area, I tried. Is there another way to go about it? Try another known bootable CD ROM and see if that will work. If it will not, and it is set to boot from the CD first in the BIOS then you have other issues.

Solve : Hiding System Shutdown, and logoff?

Answer»

Hello,
I was wondering if there is a way to block the feature of shutdown, and log off on windows XP? I only want the icons on the start bar taken away though. Thanks!!You'll want to use Group Policy to do this.  Simply go to: Start > Run...  Type gpedit.msc and click OK.  On the left side, go to User CONFIGURATION > Administrative TEMPLATES > Start Menu and Taskbars.  You'll then be given a long list of settings.  First, look for Remove Log Off on the Start Menu.  Double-click on it, click on Enable, and then click on OK.  You'll then want to do the same for Remove Shut Down on the Start Menu.  And you should be set.  You don't even have to restart. When I did that i got a message saying that it couldn't be found and that I should check to see if I typed it right. I have no clue on what you mean by the group policy and so could you help me?What version of Windows are you using?Unfortunately, I have to leave in about five minutes, but check out this link and see if it helps you out at all...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307882

I'll check in with you again ASAP to see if you still need help and I'll try to PROVIDE further assistance. The Microsoft ARTICLE says that in order to use a Group Policy you need to have Windows XP Professional...I don't have professional I only have regualar XP...is there something I'm misssing maybe? Because when I click on the add stand along thing the group policy isn't listed there...  .

Look at the picture I added under applies too...Well, darn, there goes that idea.  As far as I know, there is no Group Policy for Home Edition (that's what you have, right?).  It's a long shot, but you can try opening your Control Panel and going to Taskbar And Start Menu.  Click on the Start Menu tab then go to Customize and see if you can find any options that let you disable Log Off and Shut Down.  I don't believe Professional has it (mine doesn't), but I know that some versions of Windows do.  In the meantime, I'll see if I can find any other suggestions.

There's a way to edit your registry to get rid of the options, but the drawback is that it DISABLES the commands so that you can't even shut down from the Task Manager.

Solve : PCChips P23G & Celeron D 356 OEM?

Answer»

Hi,

I want to upgrade my PC to this mobo. I like this mobo because it's on sale and it allows me to use the RAM and the IDE harddrives I already have and it LEAVES me the path to upgrade to core 2 in the future if I ever need it. But the problem is I can't find info about the onboard video. I need to know what resolution it supports. I check everywhere, even PCChip's website doesn't mention anything about it, I am wondering if someone here who knows this mobo can tell me about it.

Thanks.

B.S3 Graphics UniChrome Pro IGP    <<<  it's real easy to do a little "hunting" on the mobo witha google search, I opened right up to newegg.com's  review section for this and the specifications for this mobo...  Give a little effort next time... good luck

you can read all the reviews from people who bought this item over there.... Go to Newegg.com, search for PCChips P23G & Celeron D 356 OEM, tell me where in the spec mention anything about the video resolution.

As I said before, I did the search and found nothing. Otherwise I wouldn't have post the question here.

B.Onboard graphics will get you at least 1024 x 768. I can't imagine a need for higher resolution with onboard graphics. It will never be a gaming machine with onboard video. What were you planning on doing with the machine? Thanks GX1_man

My PC is a dual monitor system. Right now I have a 22" wide screen with 1680x1050 resolution, witch is driven by a nVidia card, the secondary monitor is a 15" driven by the onboard video, 1024x768. I just got a 17" with a native resolution of 1280x1024. (Right now it's on 1024x768 and it looks odd.) I am hoping may be if I upgrade the mobo to SUPPORT that resolution so that I don't have to get a seperate video card.

OH, by the way, the PC I am using now is a run of the mill 1.2G Celeron mobo runs Windows2000 sp4, GENERALLY speaking, can a mobo like that support two video cards?

Monitors are like steaks, the bigger the better.

Thanks.

Solve : Problem! (0xc0000005) memory access violation??

Answer»

Hi

Ok, so I've been having this memory access violation problem since yesterday, but let me tell you about my computer FIRST. I built it in AUGUST 2006:

AMD Athlon 3800+ 2.4ghz socket am2
Asus M2N-E mobo
2 x 1gb corsair ddr2 ram
sapphire RADEON x1900 512mb
creative soundblaster audigy2 zs
seagate barracuda 7200 320GB hd

After I built it, it ran smoothly for about a month, but then it started having blue screen of death errors with a few different messages (page fault in non paged area, irql not less than equal, etc..) and different files specified in the messages ("atikvmag.dll, win32k.sys, ati3dvag.dll, npfs.sys, Lmouke.sys, dxg.sys, etc..). The errors happened about once a day, but I wasn't really concerned because everything seemed to be running fine otherwise. I regularly update graphics/sound drivers and run ad aware. I don't know if any of this is related to my current problem, but it probably is.

Anyways, to the problem... Yesterday morning I was thinking that I should run the disk defragmenter because I have never used it since I built the PC in August, so I defragged my C drive (I have the C drive as my operating system (windows), E as my pagefile, and F for applications) and left the defragmenter running while I went to class. When I came back, I had a new blue screen of death error (driver_overran_stack_buffer) so I rebooted like I always do. At this point I realized that some of my programs no longer worked. Windows Media Player opened but was unable to play any songs. Norton Antivirus seemed to be working, but I couldn't open the "protection center" (error msg: unable to start the integrator"). Microsoft Word didn't work (error msg: word has encountered a problem and needs to close). Also, none of my large games worked(Counter-Strike: Source, Age of Empires III, Battlefield 2, Rainbow Six Vegas). For Word and all of the games, the error that I get immediately after trying to open them is "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application" (then I click OK and the box appears again with the same message, and then goes away after the second time). I figure that all of these errors must be related, but I don't know why they are happening.

I've tried alot of things to fix them, and im hoping not to have to reformat everything. I tried updating graphics drivers (maybe they became corrupt somehow even though I updated them 1/10/07) but the install program now has an error as well and I don't know how to install them manually. I tried running all kinds of anti virus programs and spyware detectors in safe mode (ad aware, panda software, trend micro) and my system appears clean. I've used Hijack This. I ran memtest86 which said that my ram had no errors. I tried disabling startup processes, and I tried reinstalling the programs that had errors (reinstalling Windows Media Player worked, but reinstalling the games/MS word did not work).

Any help you can give me is much appreciated

Thank youNo one knows anything about this problem?http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/w2kmsgs/1121.aspThanks for the response

The link you gave is not my exact error message (mine is 0xc0000005), and the link is for windows 2000 (I have XP)

Also, the link assumes that the user just installed new hardware (I didn't)

Any other thoughts on my problem?

Thanks againOK, so now we know you are running XP, though we still do not know what version or what service pack.

First I would test the RAM (www.memtest86.com for a free download) and then test the hard drive with the free diagnostics from the appropriate hard drive maker's site. Even if those turn out fine, I would format the drive and reinstall Windows with the history of frequent and multiple BSOD errors. Thanks for the reply

I'm running XP home edition, 2002 service pack 2.  I've already tested the memory for 10 hours with memtest and found no errors.  I'm going to test the hard drive with the seagate diagnostic tool tonight.  And yes, I will reformat sometime within the next week if I can't find a solution.

Thanks againThough people often resist the format and reinstall route, it is often easier AND faster than sorting out the other issues. How long have you been at this already?

If this were a sudden and recent occurrence I would advise differently.Well, it happened 2 days ago, so I've been at it on and off for 2 days.  But yeah, if i can't fix it in the next 2-3 days I guess I'll try reformatting Quote

The errors happened about once a day,

This is not normal, even for Windows.  lol

anyways.. I ran a hard drive diagnostic last night and it found these errors:

  File Structure Test Result:

Partition 1 (NTFS (32.2 GB) OS)    Result: Failed with critical Errors

The following errors were found while scanning the volume:
     - One or more errors were found in the index
     - One or more errors were found in metadata file records

Partition 2 (NTFS (5.3 GB) Pagefile)    Result: Failed with critical Errors

The following errors were found while scanning the volume:
     - One or more errors were found in metadata file records

Partition 3 (NTFS (183.4 GB) Applications)    Result: Failed with critical Errors

The following errors were found while scanning the volume:
     - One or more errors were found in metadata file records

any ideas/fixes?  ThanksThat HDD is getting ready to go South for the Winter...backup immediately and get a replacement.lol that's too bad  So even a reformat won't do anything? You can try deleting ALL of the partitions and creating new ones and formatting them, but I certainly wouldn't trust that drive.  Yeah, I'm going to try an XP repair install and then if that doesn't work, a full reformat/reinstall and use seagate's disc editor to fill my HD with zeros.

I'll report in later this week with results.  Thanks for your help so far We'll leave the light on.

Strange.
Can you install other things without problems?Yes, i do not have MUCH problums just here and there and on these things. What should i do i wonder? :questionOK, well I'm no Windows 98 expert.
So I'll leave you here, and hopefully someone else can pick up this topic and help you out.

Solve : small annoying problem?

Answer»

Every time I start my computer up a folder opens called "common". How do I get rid of this? I think I have to delete a registry entry but i don't know which one.Could this be related to your issue?: File STORAGE and SharingI don't think so. The computer I'm using is at home. The folder that opens is C:\Program Files\Common\It's probably in your startup folder.Nope, I checked thereDoes the folder contain anything?

Try running MSCONFIG and select the Startup tab. And look for what may be causing the folder to be DISPLAYED. You can uncheck and re-check items to locate which one it doing it.I found the thing that was opening the folder. Is it important? It's called LVCOMS and it's in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Logitech\QCDriver\LVCOMS.exe. ALSO theres another annoying thing. Every time I boot up the comp the new hardware wizard pops up telling me to install drivers for a "VGA compatible video card". I think it's my OLD video card that's built into my motherboard. How do I stop this from happening? Here's some info: What is lvcoms.exe?

If you open Device Manager, what do you see for Display adapters?  Do you see two different ones?  Does either of them have a yellow triangle or red X next to it?

Since your motherboard has integrated video but you are using an add-on card, you may need to access your BIOS and disable onboard video.  If you can tell us your model of computer or motherboard, we may be able to dig up some more info.
The "common Files" folder started popping up when I installed Windows. According to that website it has something to do with labtec webcam, which I have. The folder started coming up before I installed the drivers for my webcam and my webcam still works perfectly so I guess that's one problem solved.

As for the video cards, both of them seem to be working fine now because in device manager everything is fine and it recognizes both of them. I think this is now like that because Windows Update installed the drivers for my integrated video card. I still want to delete the drivers and disable the old card. My computer is a Compaq Presario S4000NXPerhaps you should just leave things as they are unless you can determine that the presence of both the integrated video card and the add-on card is causing a performance problem.  On the other hand, you might try this.  Open Device Manager, right click on the integrated video card, i.e. display adapter, and select Disable.  This will leave the item in Device Manager but it will be marked with a red X.

And, yes, you could uninstall the integrated video card in Device Manager.  But, first, I would disable it, as explained above, and verify that your system runs normal with it disabled.  However, you may find that, if you uninstall it, it will reappear when you restart your computer.

And, as I said in my previous post, your BIOS may have an option to disable onboard video.I think I'll leave it the way it is because it doesn't bother me. Thanks for the help

Solve : PC uses different startup each time I boot?

Answer»

Hello - Every time I boot my computer, the startup process seems different each time. My desktop settings appear differently, the task bar programs appear in different order each time, and the system tray order is different. It also seems to recycle every forth or fifth boot and restarts the order these, "boot setups" for lack of a better term, are being loaded.

I run anti-spyware faithfully, anti-virus is installed and monitoring. I have scanned EVERYTHING over and over again. Run a registry cleaner. Ran PCOptimize. Every thing that I can think of I have ran to make sure that there isn't some outside force playing with my system. I have firewalls in place, and sites that test this say I am in "stealth mode" and cannot be seen or reached from the Internet unless I want to. It blows my mind why this is doing this.

Anyone got a clue as to what is going on? Thanks in advance for your help. This is normal.
It's just Windows loading them in a different order.
Right click the desktop and choose arrange icons by --> auto arrange, to get them into alphabetical order.
Does that help? Quote

I think you are thinking about the desktop icons loading differently. I am talking about the programs that are loaded and running in the background. Their icons in the taskbar are in different order. What happens is that sometimes my anti-virus loads first and then my MS security center. When this happens, all is fine. But then in another bootup the security loads before the anti-virus program and I am told my system is at risk because there is no anti-virus program loaded. Other times my email TRIES to check the in-box before zone-alarm loads, and it can't get the mail, and another time ZA loads and then my email and all is fine. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to the way things are loading, and they do it randomly.

I will set my desktop settings to be one way. Save them, the system keeps them for a few boots, then I get something different for the desktop settings. I look at the place to change them, and it is set to what I wanted, but the sample is altered. I click another theme, and then back to the one I wanted, and it looks fine again.

Help me...I've got gremlins but all my scans say all is well. I have all the latest file updates for the scans, but nothing is found.Sorry, the first two lines refer to the background items.
They will be loaded in different ORDERS unless you use special software to change it, perhaps by applying a delay to each item.
How many items do you have set to start with your PC?
And how long does it take to boot?I have ZoneAlarm firewall, McAfee Anti-virus, MailwasherPro, and MacDrive6. Then there is the volume and the safely remove hardware icons. That is about it besides all the MS junk they make run at startup in the background. Boot time is reasonable, less than a minute...power-button to Internet.

If this helps anyone:

Dell Desktop 3200
2 GIG Ram
XP Home SP2
120 Gig internal HD
320GIg external HDNothing seems out of place to me then.  Seems to me it's just Windows being Windows, loading things in different orders.
It annoys me too when it changes, I click on something and it's not what I expected it to be because it's changed.
The only other thing I can say is to perhaps run MS Bootvis, which will optimize your startup.
It's primarily designed to speed up startup, but it may help keep things in order.
Get it from here - choose a mirror from the list.
Then, when it's installed, click trace --> optimize System.
It will reboot your PC, and when it has finished booting a window will appear to say what it's doing - leave the PC whilst bootvis is running or it won't work.
Then reboot again and see if that helps.Thanks. I will try that and report back in a day or two to report if this fixed it.

Thank you for helping!You're welcome.
It may help, it may not.
It certainly won't hurt.
If it doesn't help, I'm out of ideas. How many partitions do you have? Have you tried to REINSTALL Windows recently? Quote

I ran the MS Bootvis, did the optimize, it rebooted and I let it restart and do its thing. When done I rebooted. Now it more than doubled the time it takes to bootup, and the magical changing startup is still occurring.

As far as the number of partitions, I have three, my main partition, and two that Dell so lovingly provided in their INITIAL setup/screwup of my system...they are for their supports use if needed...I'm guessing.

Thanks to those who offered help and advice!Looks like I'm stuck with this issue unless I want to try and reinstall everything. I think I can live with it for now. But, if you have a suggestion on something to try, let me know!

Thanks.

Solve : Internet Guest Account?

Answer»

Not sure if this is the right place to post this or not but I need help figuring out what is going on.  When I went to logon to our laptop instead of just ONE profile there were two! One was ours and the other was "Internet Guest Account"  I have never seen this before and we did not set it up.  It was password protected and I could not gain ACCESS to it EVEN when I reset the password.  So I deleted it from the Control Panel.  Well today, again- it mysteriously reapperared- this time I was able to reset the password and logon, the only icon on the desktop in there was a vpn connection to my office.  I immediately deleted the connection and the profile.  Any idea what is going on?  We are running XP, have zone alarm installed, ad-aware etc. (sorry not totally computer SAVVY) Help have I been hacked?  Hello & welcome to the forums.

You first need to Google for Internet Guest Account & read some of the 32 million hits on the subject.  Hopefully you will understand what it is and what its use is.  Then you can decide whether to DISABLE it or not.

Solve : how to fix my windows, it reboots automatically?

Hi, I have a PC of 2 years old with XP SP2 installed.
It doesn't have any antivirus or THIRD party firewall installed, because it is a BUILT PC.

I wonder if there is a way to check why it reboots non-stop and fix the problem? Quote

Solve : formatting a new hard drive and reinstalling XP?

Answer»

I am putting a new hardrive on my PC, from my understanding you need to format that hardrive and use a setup disk in order for the PC to recognize the XP program.  I am using the original XP CD. Can anyone please give me step by step guidance as to sucessfully complete this mission?!?Go to How to install or upgrade to Windows XP and click on Install Windows XP to a new hard disk, under On This Page.  But first, access your BIOS and set CD-ROM as the first boot DEVICE if not ALREADY set that way. Thanks, I have downloaded the six discs. You guys are very helpful.....................Thank YouYou mean the Setup boot disks, right?  So, your computer will not boot from CD-ROM?   :-?No, my computer has a corruped hard drive. It will not boot from a CD. That is why I am installing a brand new hard drive. I have tried EVERYTHING else to get it to boot up.Thus, the floppy drive is needed again. :-? Quote

No, my computer has a corruped hard drive. It will not boot from a CD. That is why I am installing a brand new hard drive. I have tried everything else to get it to boot up.
I get the impresssion there's still a lack of understanding about some points being discussed here.  A corrupted hard drive does not prevent you from booting from a bootable CD.  But, as I previously posted, you must go into your BIOS settings and set CD-ROM as the First Boot Device.  And, having a corrupted hard drive does not prevent you from accessing your your BIOS settings to do this.

Do you know how to access your BIOS settings?  See this image of a BIOS screen where first, second, and third boot device is set.  Your BIOS screen may look different, but the options should be somewhere in your BIOS settings screens.
Yes, I have changed my BIOS settings, first to boot from CD,(my original XP CD) when that didn't work I tried to boot from floppy,(the six discs in setup) neither WORKED. That is why I thought I should install a new hardrive and start all over.............. Do you mean that your computer will not boot from CD-ROM or floppy drive, even THOUGH you set those devices are first boot device in your BIOS, or do you mean that it will boot from them but your computer is not recognizing the new hard drive once you've booted from CD-ROM with your Window CD or from floppy disk? The computer will not boot from CD or floppy disc, even though I have set the BIOS to do so.....Well then, you may have other issues besides your hard drive.  If you have a genuine Windows CD, not a pirated version which may not work right, and you did, indeed, create floppy disks which should be bootable, then there's something wrong with your computer.  This is assuming your CD drive and you floppy drive are not defective.

What, exactly, happens if you've set CD-ROM as the first boot device and you have the Windows CD in the CD drive and then restart your computer?

Exactly what make and model is your computer and/or your motherboard?  Why did you decide to replace the hard drive?  Were you experiencing certain problems before that decision?

Solve : Media Player and mp3 management?

Answer»

I recently bought an mp3 player - Samsung YP-U2 512mb - and a good little device it is.

I've used WINDOWS Media Player to transfer a couple of spoken word cds to the mp3, but the individual files are in a jumbled, random ORDER on the device.  I presume that this was some mistake of mine in the  transfer procedure, and I decided to delete the lot and start over.  Now on the mp3 model that I've got you can only delete single files (I think) and with thirty or forty items it is a laborious job.

Can I use Media Player to make mass deletions on my mp3. and leave my pc library intact?  I can find no advice on this in Media Player help, or in the Samsung installation disk.

Advice on this, and on transferring stuff in the correct order, will be much appreciated.

I have Windows XP SP2 and Media Player 11

Thanks.Did this device come with software to use it in Windows ? ?

If the device shows up in Windows EXPLORER you should be able to copy, move and delete files at will...while you're in there make a few sub-folders to help keep THINGS organised

patio.  8-)Thanks for reply Patio.

I took a closer look at the Samsung PROGRAM and find that it does link with Media Player and also has the easy deleting option that I wanted, so I should be ok.  I had thought that the Samsung Media Studio, as it's called, just duplicated Media Player.  Now I just need to figure out how to transfer stuff in the right order.

Thanks again. You're more than Welcome...stop by anytime.

Solve : Default Install Drive??

Answer»

Ok, I just reinstalled WINDOWS XP Home on my FRIEND's computer, but split the drive into 2 partitions so that if Windows ever had to be installed again, he wouldn't have to worry about losing anything (and he could just back up his documents). Windows in on drive C and his program files etc. are on D. This is the problem I'm having:

When I want to install something, the default location is C:\Program files\ etc. etc., but I want to go DEFAULTLY to D:\Program files\ etc. etc. I'm guessing this is something as simple as a registry change, but I could be wrong. Thanks for any help. Well, if Windows has to be reloaded all of those programs will have to be individually reloaded as well. Most people forget about that. A better solution may b e to use an imaging program like Acronis True Image, which I heartily recommend.  Ditto. Well said. In the current scenario even using Acronis True Image you would now need to back up 2 seperat partitions to restore PROPERLY...not worth the effort IMHO.I'm sorry, but I think you guys completely missed the point. I know how to install programs, I'm just trying to get the programs to point to a specific DRIVE letter.

For example:

I go to install a program on his computer. The screens go as followed:

1) Welcome. You are about to install [whatever program]
2) Press next.
3) Choose the location of the install.
4) It says C:\Program files\Company\Program (as an example, of course)
5) Browse button to change that location.

Etc. etc.

What I'm trying to do is to get WHATEVER I install to give me a default install location of D:\Program files\Company\Program instead of C:\.This might be what you are looking for.  Please read the bit about backing up the Registry...

Good luckOh, I think we understood the question. We were just stalled by the logic.   Quote

This might be what you are looking for.  Please read the bit about backing up the Registry...

Good luck

Haha, thanks. At least YOU knew what I was TALKING about. I knew it was a quick registry change, but it just blanked on me as to where exactly it was..

But yeah, thanks.

EDIT: It's funny, because after reading up on that page, it turns out that was EXACTLY my problem. Thanks for coming back with your result.. Quote
Well, if Windows has to be reloaded all of those programs will have to be individually reloaded as well. Most people forget about that.
Bkid, putting user/data files on a separate partition is a good idea, for the reason you mentioned.  But, the same logic does not apply to programs, as GX1_MAN said; see quote above.  All programs would still have to be reinstalled to get the necessary updates to Windows Registry recorded.  That why I usually install programs on the same partition as Windows and just keep all my data files, including My Documents, on another partition.

Solve : Connecting laptop to an external desktop monitor?

Answer»

I MANAGED to smash the screen of my Acer Aspire laptop and decided to remove it and connect the rest to an external monitor. Everything went fine and I have used the laptop as a desktop PC for about 3 months with no PROBLEMS at all.
Last WEEK I've decided to reinstall Windows XP Home and after installation, when you have to go and answer those Microsoft boring setup questions, the monitor went into STAND by.
You can still hear the background sound that tells you windows was just been installed and even use the monitor by pressing F2 and entering setup, but nothing else.
Can somebody please help me with this?Is the smashed panel viewable ? ? If so you might have to finish the installation using that and when it's done power down and then hook up the external monitor...

patio.  8-)Try the Fn key combination that transfers video to the external monitor.Of course, as previous SAID, the smashed LCD was removed a long time ago.And yes, combination of Fn + any other keys doesn't work at all. The laptop won't boot on the external monitor now with the new installation!

Can anyone help me with this? I have completely deleted the Olympus software for my DIGITAL Camedia  D-535 off my computer. The CD did work in WinME before it works in WinXP so I KNOW it works but my computer refuses to allow the CD to do a full installation.  I've checked and 1033.mst is on my computer.

Thanks for any ideas

Solve : Outlook strips carriage returns and line feeds?

Answer»

Hi,

I'm seeing a strange thing with missing line feeds in an addin I'm building for Outlook 2003. When I manually enter TEXT
into the message body and then run the String.Split() code (below) it works find and can find the CRLFs. But if I paste text into the message body String.Split() cannot find the CRLFs - it's as if the CRLFs vanish!  But the message body still appears with paragraphs (as it the CRLFs are there).

Here are the DETAILS:

When the user sends an email my code does a split on the email message body on line feeds (CRLF) LIKE this:

void ThisApplication_ItemSend(object Item, ref bool Cancel)
{

     Outlook.MailItem mailitem = (Outlook.MailItem)Item;

     string[] Paragraphs = mailitem.Body.Split(Environment.NewLine.ToCharArray());

}

If I enter some short sentences (seperated by CRLFs) into a test email all works fine.
For example, a body of:

TestI
TestII

... works fine; there is a CRLF after "TestI".  But if I copy & paste the first line ("TestI " - added a SEPERATOR space) back into the body multiple times to get the following body:

TestI TestI TestI TestI TestI TestI TestI TestI TestI TestI TestI TestI TestI
TestII

... the CRLF after the last "TestI" unexplainably vanishes and therefor the string.Split() doesn't split right and returns just one item: the whole thing as one long string:

"TestI TestI TestI TestI TestI TestI TestI TestI TestI TestI TestI TestI TestI TestII"

Ironically, as I mentioned earlier, it still shows up in Outlook on two lines (as if there is a CRLF after the last "TestI").

I've experimented with other encodings (ASCII, US, ETC...) but with no difference. This only seems to be a problem when composing emails in "plain text" mode - "html" format doesn't have this problem.

Any help is much appreciated.

Solve : Please help, have never had such a big problem?

Answer»

Hello all

Right now I am on a computer at school. Anyways, yesterday I wokeup and turned on my computer as usual. I go to the bathroom, come back and see that I was still at the Windows XP loading screen... hmm... so I turn my TV on and wait another 2 minutes, to see that it still hasn't loaded to the username screen.

At this point I DECIDE to restart the computer, and the same thing happens. However this time it finally gets to the username screen after about what felt like a good 15 minutes. Anyways, the computer lagged as I typed in my password and it appeared a good couple of seconds later. As it was loading, I got an error message saying that the registry failed to load or something like that, and that my personal profile could not be loaded and I would be given a temporary profile. It took another forever and a day to load into the desktop.

Anyways EVERYTHING is lagged and taking forever. Internet, start bar, etc. Not knowing what to do, I TRIED to do a system restore. I restart my computer and this time instead of GETTING to the load screen , the computer restarts everytime after a couple of seconds of waiting at the Windows XP load screen.

I have no idea what to do. The days prior to that I would do the same thing I always did, and nothing out of the regular. Hmm.. I checked the parts inside the computer and everything seemed to be running just fine. I tried to do a system repair with the Windows XP disc but I have no idea how to work it I would format already but I have sooo much stuff on my computer that right now I don't think I can afford losing.

All help would be appreciated, I am in desperate need of it! Thank you.Malware? Have you scanned?

Solve : Reset to Default Problem?

Answer»

Nothing was out of place last night, I shut it down as usual EVERYTHING was working fine.  This morning I turned it on then went to get a drink while it was booting and COME back to find that everything has reset itself to default.  By this I mean that the Start Menu is back to blue where I use the silver, the frequently used program list is empty, my bookmarks are gone just like I had restored the computer but all my programs are still working....   Nobody was here to mess with it!    Oh it is a laptop if that matters any.

Now while everything appears to be working fine I am CURIOUS to know what might have caused this because in all my years on these things I have never had that HAPPEN!What are you using for virus and spyware protection?

Solve : Deleted folder?

Answer»

Windows XP

I had a folder with some word files in it.  When I INSTALLED Quicken all of the Word PROGRAM files disappeared.  Any possibility of FINDING those files or are they gone forever?  Thanks.   So you installed Quicken, and the files disappeared completely?
By program files, do you mean Word itself, or just the documents it created?
Are you sure they're gone?
Check the folder size, and enable show hidden files to check they're not hidden.titilucky....You installed the software program called "Quicken" ( the financial management  application from Intuit ) Which version ?  Was this a real one or a copy ?
Then you say it removed a folder containing "MS Word docs".  Do you still have MS office still installed on your machine with all its components ..... ie...... word , outlook , excel , powerpoint ETC ......
Assmuming you didnt somehow delete that folder yourself ....... you could use your system restore to go back to the last restore POINT before you installed Quicken .....and get them back that way ........ and thats assuming that your machine hasnt been infected with nasties.

Please provide us with more info .......

dl65
It was Quicken Deluxe 2007 the original.  Word program disappeared, just the Word program.  I had to reinstall it.  I checked hidden files but there was nothing.  The restore point is a good suggestion, I think I'll try that instead of retyping the whole folder I've been looking for.     Ok have we overlooked a simple solution? Try searching for the folder/files in Windows search

Solve : Windows XP big problem?

Answer»

I was on pittsburghpenguins.com earlier today when my internet explorer froze.  I went to control alt delete and close the program and I recieved an error saying ' Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator ' so I held the power button to shut my pc down.  I start it back up and got 2 errors on the welcome screen saying ' Svchost.exe app error, The instruction at "0x10002001" reference memory at "0x000a7000" the memory could not be "read".  The SECOND error said the same thing but with "0x77t52322" and "0x000023c0" I click ok and my desktop loads without my start menu at the bottom but I still had my icons.  What happens now is 30 seconds or so I get a new error saying - System shutdown, system is shutting down save all work and log off. Shutdown initiated by NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM windows must restart.  It gives me 60 seconds to restart.  During those 60 seconds i managed to bring a shortcut of System restore to the desktop.  Restart and next during the 60 seconds tried to open sys restore and restore but i did not restore within the time limit.  Ive tried all possible modes too, safe mode etc.  Tried using my restore disc but its a Dell and wouldnt run until windows was open, again the 60 second restart.  Any idea on how i can restore my computer please??That sounds awfully like the Blaster worm..  See here..

Good luck & please post back with your results.Yup thats what the problem is... but the next problem is, Im not able to control alt delete... it tells me that my tast manager has been disabled by my administrator.I found this site http://www.sophos.com/support/disinfection/blastera.html where i downloaded the programs to remove this worm.  Thing is I cant do it.  I have no way of getting into my start menu because its not there so i could stop the shutdown, I have no way of logging off and onto administrator and i dont have enough time to run any of the removal programs before it SHUTS downYep, the variants of Blaster can be difficult.

In the end it might be best for you to completely format the drive and reinstall your OS.  Is your backup up-to-date or do you need to recover critical data files :-?

Also please give some details of what you have available:
(1) floppy drive :-?
(2) Sata or ata hard drive(s) :-?
(3) partitioning :-?
(4) full OS version of cd (not just an update or recovery disk) :-?
(5) Knoppix Live cd :-?

and anything else you can think of, every little bit of info could be helpful.

There is at least one Dell specialist on the CH forums, I hope he will be along shortly to advise as well

What happens if you set the machine to boot from CD first (it may already be that way) and then restart with the Dell CD in the drive? What version of Windows is this?

You may be able to use this:

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_bart_cd.html

if you have another machine from which to make this bootable CDROM. There is a free trial period. I don't know if it will whip Blaster, but for free it's worth a shot. Are you unable to get into safemode ? ?
This is where the scans should be ran anyway with System restore turned off...Safe mode still has the same problem.  I have Windows XP and my computer came with a cd to reinstall Windows.  The cd doesnt boot up until Windows has loaded so I cant get that to work either. Quote

The Dell adviser has arrived.  The advice you eventually take depends upon what you need to do and what facilities you have available or can get hold of.  The most important thing to consider is what position you will be in if you lose absolutely everything on your hard drive.  Please respond to the questions asap especially the one highlighted.
Im actually in better shape now.. Managed to install the windows service package 2 and I have my start menu/tast bar back.  Im able to cancel the shutdown and work on everything.  Still unable to ctrl alt delete.  Going to need to find a way to delete it all manuallyGood - it's an MS update which closes a security hole and prevents Blaster from creating havoc.  As SOON as you are able you should get all the critical updates from MS and review your Anti-virus and Firewall.

Again - good luckI updated and everythings running ok now.. Its still running a little slow.  I ran 2 programs to get rid of the Blaster worm but both programs said they didnt find it.  Im still not able to access tast manager so i downloaded another task manager to try and shutdown the worm.  There was a program running called free.exe and i couldnt get that to close.  While running the tast manager I keep getting the popup saying it needs to restart and would have to cancel the shutdown.Dload and run Stinger from Here in Safe Mode with system restore turned off.

Do a search for free.exe while still in safe mode and delete all traces of it.

If this doesn't kill the bugger ( it should ) then DLoad and also run the Malicious Software Removal tool from the Mothership...this will NOT run if your ver. of XP is not certified...

patio.   8-)Ahhhh this is sooo annoying.. i restarted my computerl after all the scans and i also located free.exe and removed it.  now when it starts up, windows loads but it doesnt bring me to the Welcome screen.  Windows will load and then it looks as if its going to the blue welcome screen but just gives me a black screen with my mouse.  My computer NEVER came with a boot disk just came with a disk to reinstall windows but i have to be in windows to run that.  Is there anywhere i can download a boot disk? No, but you can contact Dell and have them WALK you through it. They also have great support forums.

Solve : Win ME: Disabling some stuffs?

Answer»

Ei, guyz! Is it POSSIBLE to disable storing recent documents in the "my documents" menu and also disable storing commonly USED programs?

Am looking for your reply SOON.. Thanks in advance  http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/RecentDocs.reg

One of the results on net with "disable storing recent documents windows me" Quote

also disable storing commonly used programs?

Not sure quite what is meant by this...more info.

Are you by chance running out of HDD space ? ?
If so there are better solutions, some that cost a little money but would be better than getting rid of commonly used parts of your operating SYSTEM.

Solve : InCD?

Answer»

While loading my programs after changing my HDD, I inadvertently loaded this PROGRAM called InCD. It is a program which allows me to format a CD-+ RW or DVD-+RW so that it acts LIKE a HDD or floppy. You can write to it just by copy and paste. You can RETRIEVE FILES from it, modify them and send them back to the CD/DVD. I've been using it for about 2 weeks and it seems to work well. If you erase it the disk can then it be used for ordinary burning. This program came from a Nero Smartstart disk and I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with such a program. Please leave you comments if you have.
I've used InCD before, and it gave me nothing but trouble.
Other users on these forums will tell you the same.
In my experience, it either works brilliantly or it doesn't work at all.I tried using InCD back about two years ago to have the capability to use a CD as a big floppy.  One thing I recall is that files I had put on a CD-RW  using InCD could be read by the computer on which I originally created the CD-RW but not on other computers, even if they had InCD installed.Allow me to echo the above 2 comments...there are other packet-writers out there but after the price of blank media got reasonable i pretty much walked away from it altogether.

patio.   8-)Mine is working well so far and thanks for your comments. I only use it for backing up my files.Good luck then. I agree with the others and wouldn't use it at all regardless.

Solve : XP updates?

Answer»

OS is fully updated.  Can all the updates applied after SP.2 be burned to cd for installing on another pc to avoid the longish DOWNLOAD from MS and how can they be recognised on my hdd:-?

Thanks IAI believe the solution is here: SECURITY updates are available on ISO-9660 CD image files from the Microsoft Download CenterThank you soybean - that's pretty CLOSE but what I was hoping to be able to do was avoid the downloads by burning updates after SP.2 from my hdd where there seems to be lots of them stored.

ThanksVisit a site CALLED N-Lite which has all the tools and resources for creating slip-streamed versions of XP with all current updates.
I RUINED my first 2 attempts but have done fine since and it definitely comes in as something handy to know...
