Solve : PCI bridge missing?

Answer»

Dell demension, XP, 2.8ghz, 512mb ram, 100gb HD
In my computer/hardware/device manager/system devices/pci bridges. I THINK one or more of the bridges or controllers got deleted.
My pci DIALUP MODEM dials and handshakes but will not connect to with the internet
Can anyone tell me how to restore the bridge or controller or GIVE me a link to some instructions?
Is a seperate bridge needed for each pci device?  As you see this is not my strong area.
  thanks   Joe

These drivers will be on your MBoard DRIVER CD that came with the machine...if you cannot locate them visit the manuf. website.Input your service tag on the Help and Support section, then choose your operating system and there will be all of your drivers.

Solve : I want to disable Unicode in right-click menu.?

Answer» LIKE the SUBJECT says, I'd like to disable the Unicode options in my right-click menu.  It shows up whenever I right-click on the Address bar in IE or on Notepad.  If anyone knows how to do this, I'd really appreciate it.Context Menu EDITOR....freeware.

p.s. BE CAREFUL.THANKS.  I'll look into that.  And I'll definitely be careful.Hmm, yeah, I think I'd rather just deal with my context menu than USE that and worry about messing things up.  Heh.  Thanks, though.

Solve : Speakers for my PC??

Answer»

I just recently purchased a HP computer. The speakers in the MONITOR aren't going to cut it when it COMES to playing music. Anyone have an opinion on which brand (for 50.00-75.00) would be a good fit for my commputer?  I had ORDERED a set from HP, but they called to let me know I may experience some feedback.Altec Lansigng for my money...about 50 bucks. For me, it's Logitech.
Shop around for the X-230 or X-330 sets - about £30, so maybe $60 or so?
Depends if you want SURROUND sound - these are 2.1 speakers, very good sound QUALITY and I've not had any issues with them.
Just my opinion. Thanks Calum  . I've checked out the Altec's and will check into Logitech.

Solve : Random lock ups in Windows, please help.?

Answer» Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service PACK 2
Pentium 4 3GHZ
1GHZ 667 DDR2
Intel D946GZIS Motherboard

While using any program my computer will randomly load from the hard drive which can at times cause the entire PC to lock up. I've even encountered this happening when nothing is running, though the PC doesn't seem to lock up in these INSTANCES. I've had the Task Manager open when this happens and the Total CPU Usage percentage doesn't peak, nor does the CPU Usage of any program. Things stay the same. Depending on the memory usage of the program though, the loading is sometimes worse.

What happens exactly is it sounds like my hard drive is loading something BIG and spins up audibly shortly before my PC completely locks up for anywhere between 10 seconds to almost a minute.

Anyone I've talked to about this issue has told me to do a number of things but none of which help nor explain the issue at all.DLoad and run the HDD DIAGNOSTICS from the manuf. site...

Check your virtual memory settings (paging file).
What protection do you have?
Does this STILL HAPPEN in safe mode?
When did this start, and what happened before it started?patio: I'll try that, but I don't think there is anything wrong with the drives, they are both newly formatted and one of them is very new.

Calum: Where would I need to look to locate the Virtual Memory settings? By protection, I assume you mean Firewall and Virus Protection? I'm using Sygate Personal Firewall and AVG Free Edition. Both are updated and AVG scans my PC everyday. I have not attempted to run the PC in safe mode so I am not sure, I will attempt this and post where it happens or not shortly. As for when it started, it's been happening since day one, before this I was using an entirely different PC setup.

EDIT
I ran the PC in Safe Mode, but since I'm not able to run any system hoggin programs I wasn't ab;e to test whether or not the issue persisted.Virtual memory settings are under Control Panel --> System --> Advanced --> first setting button.
What is the page file set as?
Also, use Disk Defragmenter to defrag, see what it's like after that.
By protection, I did mean virus and spyware protection and the firewall.
Do you have any spyware protection?
Quote
I'm not able to run any system hoggin programs
What do you mean by this?
Did the PC still sound like it was loading things from the HDD?

Any suggestions? :-?

Clarify about the two CD's involved. As to the hardware being fine we are assuming that, but it is not known for sure.

What problems were you specifically having before all of this? What "bad virus" was this?the recovery CD is the one that came with the computer. It contains Windows Me along with some sony SOFTWARE. The other windows XP CD is the home edition(upgrade edition if that matters).  The virus I had previously would just make my computer really slow and take me to add sites alot, basically adware. The computer still worked but I couldnt get rid of the virus so I decided to try reformatting...The XP CD is asking for a legal copy of a real Windows CD to be inserted. Unfortunately a recovery CDis not going to help. You will have to install ME again from the restore CD and THEN install Windows XP on top of that. Hopefully you will be give the option to FORMAT the drive during install. If so, you should do that.

Solve : drm component update fails every time?

Answer»

i got a drm wma file from walmart downloads so i tried playing it with wmp9 (which walmart recommends) and a message popped up saying that i need to update my drm components so i clicked ok. it said it was starting individualization but then a message pops up that says "unknown error". microsoft has no info on this error on their website. this REALLY is a frustration to me!!Just to let you know that your question is not being ignored,
its just that I have no idea how to fix it. TRY using WMP10 or 11?
Or another audio player, such as Winamp or VLC?Contact WalMart?could it be my internet explorer settings?

By the way i told you i have dial up right?

Have someone you know DLoad and burn a copy of VLC Media Player. It plays everything for me...Okay, I might try that.

I'll just download it overnight if it only takes that long. How comes drm wma files won't WORK if i try it on my stereo?

it says "protected" and doesn't play it either.

i guess i know nothing about drm. Quote

Contact WalMart?
Try getting in touch with them. Quote

Now you do:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=drm
is it something like: you have to have a drm media player to copy the drm wma files to your DEVICE in order to listen to them on a device?

are drm component upgrades just the windows media player or is it windows?  well vlc doesn't play it. I tried the file with my dad's computer and it plays at least, however, it won't let me put it on my portable device. Why anyone would put a DRM file on their machine to begin with is beyond me...

It must be a really good song.

Solve : XP Shutdown trouble?

Answer»

When I go to shutdown my computer after start, turn off computer and turn off buttons it starts to SHUT down then closing program ccApp appears briefly then it does not do anything for about a minute then a program not responding appears with "cardreaderlookup".I then must click on end program and then the computer shuts down.
Any ideas on how to clear up this problem?
Computer shut down normally a few weeks ago.
ThanksHow often has this HAPPENED or did it just happen once?  Were you playing or using an application and then decide to shutdown?  And if so did you have a problem with the appplication or program?  Did you close that program before shutting down? This happens every night when I shut it down.
I close all programs.
I close my browser, AT&T/YaHoo DSL .Then close the internet connection.
I don't see anything else running on my toolbar.
Every once in a while I get a message "Browser has encountered a problem and must shut down"
Duster.....  What operating system are you using ?

Do you have any apps made by Intiut ........installed , like Quickbooks or Turbotax ?
How long has this been going on ?   ( you mentioned a few weeks ....) Have you installed any new software back about the same time ?

dl65  dl65
I have XP,and have Turbo tax 2003 and 2004 still installed on my computer.
Also IE7 is installed. My browser is ATT/Yahoo and every once in a while I get a message "browser has encountered trouble and must shut down"
I think that ATT/Yahoo uses a modified version of IE.And that IE6 and IE7 both produce that error message? Both produce the same message.Error log sent to Microsoft.
Message back from Microsoft says that problem is the ATT/Yahoo browser and to update browser.
Since I updated browser and IE7 self-installed I've had this problem.I am still having trouble shutting down.
Now I only get the ccApp after I hit the shutdown computer button. It sits for about a minute and a half and then finally shuts down.
Any ideas?Any Norton apps on this machine ? ?

patio.  8-)I have Norton Internet Security 2006 installed. This is likely the culprit...how long do you have left on that subscription ? ?180 days:(  Have had alot of strange trouble since INSTALLING this.It even freezes up when trying to access the norton program itself. When it freezes you cannot shut down pc at all and must use the reset  to restart pc.Never had a problem with norton products before but after this I will never purchase any more of their products again.
Other that uninstalling this is there any way to get rid of these problems?Instructions on removing the Norton virus:

DLoad  the tool below...

Norton Removal Tool

1) Use Add Remove Programs first and un-install Norton...
2) From Windows Explorer search for any folders named Norton and Symantec and delete them...
3) DLoad and install ERUNT and have it make a backup of your registry...
4) Open regedit and type Norton in the search bar. Delete all entries it finds. F3 takes you to the next  instance of Norton. Continue til you have reached the end of the registry...
5) Repeat the above process using Symantec instead in the search field. Delete any Symantec keys it finds...
6) Now run the Norton Removal tool you DLoaded...
7) Empty the recycle BIN...
Go to My Computer and right clik the C: drive and select Properties and run disk cleanup...
9) Re-boot and run disk defrag....

There you're done !

See how easy Symantec makes it for you to dump their product ? ?

patio.   8-)

I suggest AVG Free and AVG Anti-Spyware as a strong replacement...

Solve : Computer Troubles x_X Please read.?

Answer» Hey EVERYONE, I'm having a few issues.. I've been trying to fix them myself for the past 3 days.. and have FAILED each and every time.. My first problem is when I go to "My Computer", "Control Panel", "Administrative tools" Then "Services". I get this error..  "Snap-in failed to initialize. Name:Services  CLSID:{58221C66-EA27-11CF-ADCF-00AA00A80033} I then have the option to push "ok" so I do. Then I get another error.. and it says "Snap-in Creation Failed.   The snap-in is not created, it may not be installed properly. CLSID:{58221C66-EA27-11CF-ADCF-00AA00A80033}

I'm also having another problem, dealing with.. windows update. When I try to update I get this error, "0x80072EE7". I've done some of the things they've suggested and they haven't worked.. like adding the urls to the "trusted sites".

I'm using a Dell Latitude Laptop c500/c600 and it runs windows xp.

My last problem is with Direct x 9.0 Installer. When I go to install it a while through installing it gives me this error "The software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify o
its compatibility with Windows XP". Then after I click "OK" Another error POPS up.. it says "An internal system error occurred. Please refer to DXerror.log and DirectX.log in your Windows folder to determine the problem".

Hope someone can help me, thanks for reading.

I think your installation is FUBAR'ed. What would you think about a reinstall of Windows after you back up your data FILES?

Do you have a real Windows CD, as opposed to a restore CD? If so, you might think about a repair install.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

A reinstall takes less than the 3 days you have already spent.

Is this XP Home or Pro?
Maybe one of these pages might help?...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;826282&Product=winxp

http://www.mcse.ms/message579903.htmlI'm running Windows XP Home edition, version 2002. I bought this laptop and it had windows xp on it already. It didn't come with a cd but I have a windows xp cd from my desktop, I've tried reinstalling the COMPONENTS that are missing like the administrative tools, that didn't change anything unfortunately.

I'm trying this in the link CBMatt mentioned.

This should expand services.ms_

Start | Run | Type:  cmd  | OK |

Type:    d: [ENTER]

cd i386 [ENTER]

expand services.ms_ c:\windows\system32\services.msc

[ENTER]

(where "d:" is the letter of the CD-ROM drive with the

Windows XP installation disc)

=======

This should expand fsmgmt.ms_

Type:    d: [ENTER]

cd i386 [ENTER]

expand fsmgmt.ms_ c:\windows\system32\services.msc

[ENTER]

When I type in "expand services.ms_ c:\windows\system32\services.msc"  It says "No destination specified for: services.ms_c:\windows\system3services.msc.

So maybe that would be the solution if it'd work right..?

If not then I guess I'll try the reinstalls windows..
Would I just have to wipe this laptop with like well DBAN or something.. hmmm nevermind. This laptop doesn't have a floppy drive x_O.

I've tried this link and done what it said"http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;826282&Product=winxp"
already it didn't change anything.

Thanks for the help and replies. ^.^

Solve : Won't boot up right.?

Answer»

My girlfriends computer won't boot. She can TURN it on and it will get to the windows xp boot screen but go no further. I told her to try booting it in safe mode. She did the whole F8 thing and and CHOSE boot in safe mode and it went to a screen with a bunch of numbers, brackets and letters. She tried it again but this time it said there was a keyboard error and it had a few options, one of them was system configuration F10 or SOMETHING along those lines. It had a whole load of options we could select from there, which if are needed I can POST. So if anyone has any idea what we can do, or needs a bit more information, PLEASE post.

Thank you.Try safemode again but just let it run til it finishes....it sometimes takes AWHILE when it hasn't been accessed in a while.

Once you get in check Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager to see if any devices have issues. They will have a yellow symbol next to them. All right. I'll give that a whirl tomorrow. Thanks. If there are problems what should I be telling her to do about them?Let's get to point A first...Give me until about 9:30 EST.As GX1_Man would say...we'll leave the light on... [smiley=thumbup.gif] Thanks. Ok she put it on last night around 10? I guess. She's calling back in an hour...I think. I'll post once she does.I guess she didn't call back.  No, she didn't sadly. She did a little while ago but it is still on the numbers and letters screen, and it's been over 24 hours. Quote

Solve : Win XP boots in safe mode but not in normal mode?

Answer»

good day folks..I'm having a little issue I can't seem to solve..would greatly appreciate any assistance
This is a pc I had built for my in-laws, here is my specs:
Soltek SL-865Pro2-FGR mobo
MSI NX6600GT-VTD128 video card
Kingston Value RAM - KVR400X64C3AK2/1G : 1GB PC3200 CL3
INTEL P4 3.2GHZ
Seagate 200GB SATA hard drive
500W power supply.
Windows XP Sp2

my issue is that when I boot up the pc it starts to load up Windows the pc just restarts.
Tried it in safe mode and it works though.
The reason why I ended up in this scenario was because I cleaned up some trojans and viruses. I cleaned up the bulk of it by taking the hard drive and plugging it into another pc because the origianl pc was really crawling. I put it back into the origianl pc and ran in safe mode to clean up anything left behind in the OS. I can't remember starting it up in NORMAL mode at this time though.
The next thing I did was removed the RAM out of the pc to stick into the next pc to see how much difference to my DSL speed it would make. I then put slower memory in my father-in-laws pc cause he doesn't use it ANYMORE. This memory was Kingston KHX3200AK2/512 - 512MB PC3200 CL2.
I then booted it up as normal, then when Windows was almost finished loading, the blue screen flashed up and it restarted. I tried to take a picture of the blue scree but was unsuccessful. In the meantime I had put back the original RAm and also tried a different hard drive. With the different hard drive, at least it got as far as asking for "windows activation' before it restarted. All other drives were disconnected also.
I then swapped video cards and same thing. From all my 'testing' it looks like there is a problem with the motherboard it seems.
I tried contacting Soltek but apparently they out of business, anybody can confirm this?
if it is the mobo, why does it boot in safe mode?
Thanks for the help in advance.I also tried all 4 memmory slots one at a time and still didn't work.
I KNOW I need the blue screen info, so is there any recommended way of getting it like from a log inside safe mode or something?
ok i got what the message said by 'turning off auto restart on error"
this is the error code:
0x0000007e
0xc0000005 0xf76AC174 0xF96B7D44 0xF96B7A40

i will go see what i can dig up on this in the meantime, till some of you wake up..yes I know its saturday morning..sleep-in-late time  Here Ya Go

Thanks Patio for sending me down the right path
Yep got it FIXED by SUPPOSEDLY uninstalling the drivers for the Video card and sound card...but apparently they were still there when i restarted lol..at least it boots up now lol

Thanks again  8-)
Remove them one at a time and re-install them...use both Add/Remove and Device Manager to do so.
Doing more than one confuses Windows and we all know Windows is confused enough...

Solve : W2K Add/Remove Windows Components?

Answer»

When I go to Control Panel and choose Add/Remove Windows Components I get a screen that said: "Setup was unable to open the FILE au.inf.   Contact your system Administrator.  The specific error code is 0x2 at the line 2086412652."
I found that the au.inf file is used by Microsoft for sending automatic updates to the computer.  I have set my computer through the icon in Control Panel to receive automatic updates.  My OS is W2K and I am the Administrator but I do not know how to solve the problem.
All help will be very much appreciated.[timestamp=1170225244]I am answering my own question.  I found that the file au.inf was missing for reasons unknown to me.  I have W2K and also Win XP, so I copied the file au.inf from Win XP and put in C:\WINNT and it worked partially but there was a pop-up screen that was giving INFORMATION about another TWO files missing and I replaced them the same WAY and now the Add/Remove Windows Components is back on working conditions.
Hope this may help SOMEONE in the future.Glad you're fixed...System File Checker would have done the same thing.

Solve : Desktop occasionally reconfigures itself.?

Answer»

Sometimes, when I am finished with an application and close it. or when I store word or excel data onto one of my hard drives, my monitor goes completely blank for a few seconds then, when it comes back on it has to restore all of the icons on the desktop, one at a time,  and sometimes it recofigures my whole desktop arrangement.  Really annoying, as i have a  loaded desktop.  Is this normal for XP? ?   I am running windows XP, on a 2 yr old home built machine with 1 Gb of ram, Athlon cpu, two 80 Gb hard drives, partitioned into 4 drives of 40 Gb each.   Anyone have any IDEA what is going on? ?  Thanks   JimThere are MANY issues that could be causing this including but not limited to RAM issues and or corrupt vid card drivers.

Do a search for a utility called Desklay which saves your desktop settings and restores them with one clik.

Meantime check your vid card drivers and run memtest on that RAM.GERU. thanks  for the comeback.       I searched for desklay.  All the web sites were printed in some oriental language I did not understand.  HOWEVER one called "help desk survival" offerd a tool kit for $199.00.   Beyond my means.
I checked my ram with "PC Mechanic" and defragged it.  Found no problems.
Vidio drivers all have been checked and updated.  I have a NVIDIA GeForce FX5500, I believe.  Capable of drivein 2 monitors.  The display blanked out again last night when i stored something on the desktop. If you are having no luck finding Desklay send me a PM...

As to the video issue i would remove a side panel and make sure the fan is working on that card.

If it is power down and remove the card and clean the contacts with a PENCIL eraser and re-seat it.

As usual take all ESD precautions when working inside the case and make sure all power sources are disconnected.PATIOPATIO,   I  WILL TRY AGAIN.  Hit the wrong key.
THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE GETTING MORE PREVALENT.   :-/
1   HAVE NO LUCK GETTING DESKLAY
2   THERE IS NO FAN ON VIDEO CARD, ONE ON AUDIO AND IT IS WORKING
3   HAVE NOT TRIED CLEANING CONTACTS YET.  WILL DO.  I HAVE NO PROBLEM GOING INTO MY   MACHINE. BEEN THERE MANY TIMES
I am very appreciative of the help you are offering here.  Thanks PC Mechanic isn't a full RAM tester DLOad and run Memtest. It creates a bootable floppy. Let it run a few hours. Quote

GeForce FX5500,

If this is your card it should have a fan...

Solve : Two viruses found?

Answer»

Hello.  My EZ Trust ANTIVIRUS has found infected but NOT DELETED two viruses, both found in WINDOWS  SYSTEM  32.  I can manually track them both until the very last file, of which I can't find in the listing.  Viruses:  WIN32  MMThief and WIN# Pigeon.GV.

I just downloaded a free trial of AVG 7.5 so don't know if it maybe deleted them.

Any thoughts on how to delete these buggers?

Can I run two antivirus at the same time?

Thanks kindly for any help and have a good one!!!!Running two AV programs is not such a good idea. If you scanned with AVG, you WOULD have received a notice that two were found and asking what you wanted to do with them. It's never a good idea to run 2 AV programs in any instance...

Both of these are trojans which are a different beast altogether.

DLoad and update and run the following in Safemode with System Restore turned off:

AVG Anti-Spyware
Stinger.

Disconnect from the web when doing this. When DONE re-connect and re-boot and do a SEARCH for both files.

Post back with your results...

Solve : SiSRaid.sys could not be found?

Answer»

System  Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2
I have got as much information as possible to explain my problem, I have checked the SCSI and Raid Controllers and done a update but that has not helped my problem
I do not know when or how this SiSRaid.sys was or if remove are what it is for.

When I log on it comes up with :-
Select the operating system to start:-

Windows Microsoft XP Home Edition (if I press return in time I get logged on to my computer)

Windows Microsoft XP Set up (comes up with SisRiad.sys could not be found)

If I am not quick enough it AUTOMATICALLY goes on the Windows Microsoft XP Set Up when it does so the message: Press F6 if you need to install third party SCSI or Raid DRIVER...

What comes up is insert disk into DRIVE A  and press enter, the maunfactures have not supplied me with a FLOPPY disc so I can do nothing

They supplied a CD Windows XP Home Edition, I am told if I run this I will loose all my information stored on my computer so that not so good

I have look through the internet there is alot about it, but with computers fairly new to me I have no idea what it means, what I have worked out is I need to install a SiSRaid.sys on my computer which is a Windows XP.
Can some one help me please :-?
If you can help came you tell me in   step by step what I should do please help me

Or where I could go to download this SiSRaid.sysIt's possible your RAID drivers have gotten corrupted...does this machine have a SATA Hard drive in it ? ?
If so you need to locate the RAID drivers for it and re-install them...Are you, in fact, running RAID on this machine?

If you choose the first option then everything is fine? The other day I found a web page that if I am having problems with the Raid I should unistall and then reinstall I followed it through, so turn my computer off then logged on again, but my computer still had the same message SiSRaid.sys can not be found, I even tried it this afternoon and it still has the same problem.

I went through the tabs the first one Device TYPE, Location PCI bus, device 5, function 0

Device status
this device is working properly
If having problems go to troubleshoot, that was no help.

Property Tab
was blank

Driver Tab
SiS 180 Raid Controller

Update which I have done

Unistall done and reinstalled

Resources
10/ Range  E300-E307
etc
then at the bottom it reads No conflicts :-?

So I am still at a loss, I fixed the problem with the motherboard I now have my floppy drive back, but to tell you the truth I was hoping it would fix the problem I am having with logging on, but it is not that easy, worse luck.

When you edit your original post it makes it harder to follow...

The RAID drivers should be on your MBoard Driver CD and or available at their website. If you are not using raid and don't intend to, go into bios and disable the raid controller (assuming onboard raid). Go into device manager and remove it from the system. If it is in your start-up, uncheck it. There is no use fooling with drivers that you don't use, don't need, don't want.

I need to upgrade to XP Pro, is it necessary for me to uninstall Windows 2000 Pro?  If so, how would I go about doing that? Thanks for any help!! No need to uninstall it...just FOLLOW the directions in the XP SETUP routine and select a clean install and it will wipe that HDD in the process...

Remember to backup anything you need from there as it will be gone forever.OK, that didn't work.  It set up and then froze up at installing drivers.........How can I just uninstall Windows 2000 and format my hardrive??   :-?gsuzette......  How did you attempt to install XP?
Did you set the boot sequence to cd-rom first ..... put the xp cd in the cd -rom and then reboot the machine ........ it should have started then went through the format process and then installed XP on a clean HARD drive ......... ARE you using a upgrade CD or a original full XP Pro ?

dl65  Yes, I set the boot sequence to cd rom, then rebooted, The XP set up was going through but then it stopped when it was installing files. I am using the original XP Pro........I didn't realize, does that made a difference... :-?

What does that mean? You had asked me if I was using the upgrade CD or the original full XP Pro CD, I am using the the original full XP Pro Cd.........Actually that was dl65 that asked that. During the install did you choose to format the drive? If not, do that and post back.I set it up to boot from cd, the installation was going fine and then it froze up at installing drivers.  It never asked me to format the hardrive. It's right after you press F8 to agree to the license.Well, I have tried every tip y'all have given me, nothing has worked.  It doesn't ask me to press F8 to agree with the license.  When I boot with the CD, it just ask me to press any key to continue, after that it starts the download and STOPS when it is downloading drivers. It doesn't ask me to format the hardrive, it doesn't ask me anything, it just starts the download and then freezes up when it is downloading drivers. What the heck am I doing wrong? [smiley=embarassed.gif]  [smiley=sad.gif] HELP!!!Try gently cleaning that CD with a soft lint free cloth...COULD it actually be that easy?? Yes.

But no guarantees in your case.anything is worth a try to me! Thanks

Solve : Need advice on photo software?

Answer»

I'm not a computer WHIZ, but think I would enjoy doing some photo EDITING.  I have tried Picasa and HP Photosmart Premier. They're easy to use, but not as advanced as I would like. I WANT something that does more than just edit pics and remove redeye for emails. At the same time, I realize I'm not computer literate enuf for really advanced programs. Any ideas on what would be a good fit for me?Well, for most people, the obvious choice would probably be PhotoShop, but it can be a bit pricey.  Personally, I prefer Paint Shop Pro.  It's CHEAPER, less advanced, and easy to use.  And it ALSO comes with Animation Pro, which allows you to make your own animated gifs.  I still use my old Paint Shop Pro 6.0 (when Corel was still Jasc), but I'm sure the new Paint Shop Pro Photo XI is probably just as good.  Go to the site and download a free trial and see what you think.Try out the GIMP and Paint.NET, both available from the Software FAQ.
I use both and I find them to be really easy to use and very powerful with lots of advanced features
Oh, and they're both free as well.
Hope this helps.CBMatt & Calum.......Thanks!  Will try all 3  You're welcome.
I also liked Paint Shop Pro (never used Photoshop) but couldn't afford it.  Since I found out about Paint.NET and the GIMP, I've never looked back. And I'll be sure to check out GIMP and Paint.NET.  Ha.Haha.
Do it.
For the price, they're very good.

Solve : stops web browsing, deleting temp int files cures?

Answer»

Hi again everyone.
I'm real inexperienced so the answer is likely simple for you guru's but I evdentaly can't even figure out what search words to use.
My 1999 model Emachines 667ix computer running win ME has a problem with frequent stopping when browsing the net. It usually resumes after I go to control panel> internet options>general tab> temporary internet files> delete files.
I feel like it's a problem with RAM because my bellsouth accelerator diagnostics says
Quote

Step 1 of 8:
Checking system RESOURCES...
  Disk space:
    2047 MB free disk space.
    2047 MB total disk space.
    Disk space is OK.
  Memory (RAM):
93% of memory is in use.
    17 MB free physical memory.
    254 MB total physical memory.
    RAM space is OK.
System Information:
  Microsoft Windows ME:       4.90.3000
      COMCTL32.dll       5.81.4134.100
      KERNEL32.dll       4.90.0.184
      MSVCRT.dll       6.1.8637.0
      RASAPI32.dll       4.90.0.184
      SHELL32.dll       5.50.4134.100
      WININET.dll       5.50.4134.100

      WSOCK32.dll       4.90.0.184
      SHLWAPI.dll       5.50.4134.100
But when I go to the control panel> system properties> performance:
It says
Quote
255MB of RAM
32% free
file system 32 bit
virtual memory 32 bit
disk compression not installed
PC cards {PCMCIA} no PC Card sockets are installed
your system is configured for optimal performance
I may not have got that second quote exactly right because I couln't get it to copy / paste.

I installed Memory 128MB 1 Pc. SDRAM DIMM PC 100 MEEM525128MB  59.95
Is that not RAM memory?
I'll quit right here because I really don't know much about computers and you all probably already know what my problem is. I'll post more info if you need it.
Please keep instructions as simple as you can for me if possible.
Thanks for the help in advance and for in the PAST too.
Mike
I don't think these much of detalis are required.

Its a general thing with IE.
Sometimes you have to delete the temp. internet files.TRY reducing your temp file size & history duration.
Mine are set to 10MBs and 1 day.Won't reducing the temp size have any effect on performance.Every page I click on is new so there is no point in having IE searching the cache for old stuff.Yup,

But it may find the pictures and some flash content there.

As these are quite common and we frequently revisit some pages like mails.Sorry about all the info posted. I had know idea what info might be needed.

I am constantly deleting temp files in order to get it to continue browsing. By constantly, I mean from about once an hour to as often as once about every 10 minutes. I set the value for 1 day in that box for "history duration" and it still does the same.  As I already mentioned file size is set to 97MB.
There is another option in that window that allows settings for {"check for newer versions of stored pages every:"} I have tried that setting at: "never", "every visit to that page", "every time Internet explorer starts", and "automatically". All 4 settings seem to have no effect on the browsing issue I have.
I also have a "temp files" in the BellSouth accelerator program I'm currently using and it is set at 20MB and I don't see an option to set duration. I usually delete those temp files manually at least every other day.
But I had this same issue before installing that accelerator program.

One more thing:
This problem is intermittant and I suspected a possible connection issue. But I had the telephone lines to box outside checked again yesterday by a BellSouth technician for the 3rd time in the last 2 years. I have used 3 different sets of wiring from that box to my modem plug-in and this is the 2nd modem i've used in this computer. All with similar results concerning this issue.

Sorry about the long post again.
And thanks again!!!BTW: I posted the previuos reply today. Tonight when I veiwed this thread, my last post was not shown. That is what happens when I select the "never" option in the temp files window. It seems to do fine set at "automatic.
Isn't this type of browsing funtion the point of that section of the temp files window that allows the {"search for new versions of stored pages."} function?  :-?
Is that the type of funtion that what you were refering to vibhor_agarwalin Posted on: Yesterday at 1:25am

?BTW: Would this subject be better PLACED by posting in the IE section, although I posted in this section since I suspected a 'RAM' problem to be the culprit, but I don't know, yet.
I have another post to make in that section and will included a link to this thread as well.
Thanks again!
Sorry about digging up this old stuff, but I haven't used this PC online in several months so, of course, this problem went away. But I now have the affected PC back on-line and this same browser hesitation problem is worse than ever. I have watched my 'system monitor' values to try to find the culprit but with no luck. I am using an expired version of Norton Internet Security, {most of my last year was spent in the hospital and paying medical crap rather than working, so upgrading the Norton is not an option at this time.} I was planning to download a free version of AVG later tonight so I will have some protection.

As I mentioned, I'll keep trying to figure out the memtest86-3.1a.iso file and I'll post the results when done.
Thanks for the help GX1_Man !!!
Do you have Nero , or something else to burn the ISO file to a CD? You cannot just copy it over.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=how+to+create+iso

Be sure to uninstall Norton before loading another antivirus. AVG will work just fine.

Solve : JPS / JPG thumbnail Windows XP Explorer?

Answer»

There is a filetype that is called JPS (same as JPEG, except with "STEREO" attached)

The stereo .jps file type is a simple jpeg image file with two JPEG images placed sides-by-side. A 1024x768 image is actually 2048x768, a left image and a right image.

Anyways, I want to find a hack in windows XP that will allow me to view THUMBNAILS of .JPS filetypes in EXPLORER.

If you take a .JPG file and rename it .JPS, I want to see the thumbnail of that image in windows explorer without third party software.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

More and more applications are beginning to use the .JPS filetype. I am NOT interested in renaming .JPS to .JPEG / .JPG.

thanks again! Can you cite a reference on the JPS file type?  A Google search yielded nothing.  Same here.
This was the best I could find, a reference in a Wikipedia disambiguation.
Even then, it only says "JPEG Stereo Image (a file type)".
Other Google searches reveal people with similar problems (WANTING to use JPS thumbnails) but little about the format itself or solutions. C0BALT......
Perhaps this link will give you a bit of insight.

Perhaps you could mention what applications use this file extension ....other than perhaps "Print Studio"

Is the attached image the type of thing your referring to:

dl65

Yes, this side by side image is exactly the type of file.

software to make stereo images (just jpg with different extension)
http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/stphmkr/index.html

Again, what I want to do is to TELL windows that JPS IS actually a JPG and to deal with the JPS file exactly the same way as a JPG file so I can view the "jpg" thumbnail in explorer.
I already have software to deal with .JPS files appropriately.

It would similar to telling windows that a .DOCUMENT file is the same as a .DOC file
Maybe this will also help clarify some things.

8-)fffreakThere are many aps and plugins to deal with JPS filetypes.

I'm not trying to find aps to view JPS filetypes.

All I want to do is to tell windows explorer to deal with JPS the same way as a JPG file, so I can view the thumbnail in explorer.

for example:
Take a JPG file in explorer and rename it with a JPS extension. Now how do you tell windows explorer to view the thumbnail of that?

a registry hack?

thank-you!

OPEN an Explorer window.
Choose Tools / File Types.
There you can manually add the correct extension so Windows will now see it as a genuine file type...

Whether Explorer is intuitive enough to create thumbnails for these well that's another story.

patio.  8-)Yes, i SUPPOSE windows XP isn't smart enough to figure it out.

It would be very nice to be able to view these thumbnails in windows explorer.  8-)Did you try the suggestion ? ?Yes.

Solve : Default sounds keep changing.?

Answer»

I'm hoping someone can help me with a little annoyance.  I've searched all over Google and I've found plenty of solutions to problems similar to mine, but no solutions to my actual problem.  The other day, just out of the blue, my Start Navigation sound changed to ANOTHER sound (start.wav) that was similar, but slightly louder and more annoying (to me anyway).  I changed the sound back to the default through Sounds And Audio Devices and things were fine, but after starting my computer again the next day, the sound changed again.  This continued to happen every time I turned my computer back on.  Annoyed, I GOT rid of the start.wav file, but now when I turn my computer on, I just get SILENCE instead of the default Start Navigation sound.  The default sound still exists, as does the sound scheme (and it isn't changing to another sound scheme), so I don't understand what's going on here.  I tried using the Restore Default Sounds registry edit from Kelly's Korner, but it didn't change anything.  Does anybody have any idea what might be going on and how I can fix it?  If it's of any relevance, I'm on Windows XP with a Gateway GM5094E.  Thank you.Are you the only user of this machine ? ?

patio.  8-)Yes, I'm the only person with access to this computer.Go to Start / Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your XP CD handy.Actually, my problem has magically been solved.  Well, not magically, of course.  In the process of trying to fix another problem, the problem with my default sounds was fixed.  I think maybe it had to do with a small virus or a corrupt file.  I'm really not sure.  All I know is that I no longer have to worry about this annoyance.  Thank you for your assistance, though.

Solve : Bizarre WinXP Issue with Quickbooks Program?

Answer»

I started up Quickbooks on Friday and ran the update and when I opened the data file, question mark prefixes appeared in front of all of the account names (screenshot attached was NOT posted)). The program will not let you delete the question mark as it errors and says the account number already exists. Yet it DENIES data entry as the account cannot be found! If I open the identical data file with Quickbooks on my laptop, all is normal. I do not run payroll.

So, I uninstalled and after the uninstall it forced a reboot then again after reinstall. The again after I reinstalled over the install I had just made when I pulled my internet connection cable off as it WENT into windows. Same thing. I TRIED to uninstall one more time, cleaned out all remnants of the program and from the registry and tried again to reinstall with my cable connection disconnected from bootup (so it could not update on the internet). Same result.

I am thinking now that it is not a bug in the Quickbooks update, but maybe a windows problem It cannot be that the data file is CORRUPTED as it works fine on the other computer. :-?

This has caused me and my bookkeeper enough downtime and frustration – so please help!!

Solve : MS Paint Program?

Answer»

I'm a newbie and need some help.  What are the steps to use when you WANT to use the "fill" TOOL to color the background?  Thanks redeyeart  ..... Perhaps this will ASSIST you .

dl65   redeyeart.......  or perhaps like this

dl65  Thanks. Much appreciated!  I still can't get it to work. I've tried right clicking, left clicking, all to no avail. I've either got to be missing a step, or doing something out of order.  Do I use the "pencil" to trace AROUND my object first?  Then, I should be able to right click on clor (to color background), then left click on "fill can", then go to background area of picture and either right or left click. The paint can should automatically fill the background with color. Right?  Do you see anything in my description that I'm doing wrong or out of seguence? How's it going?  Can you do something simple like this?

If you are trying to fill an area of "unpure" background, such as from a photo, or a JPG or GIF (in which areas of colour are not uniform) then it will not work. You will either need to use a more advanced program, or draw over the area yourself with the block drawer.

Perhaps if you could attach the image you are trying to modify for us?Neil.......I think that is probably my problem. I can do the image "soybean" posted, but can't change the background color of any photos. So, "fill paint" won't let me use the "pencil" to trace around the PERSON in my photo and then change background color. Correct?

Solve : Windows Missing Fonts??

Hey guys I'm doing a lot of design on my computer and I use a FONT manager. I THINK that in the process of activating/deactivating I must have done something wrong and killed a system font. Some programs have a weird font, or some dialog boxes don't look right.

I've attached an example of what I mean

SPECS:

Windows XP SP2
2.0GHZ ATHLONXP2400
80GB HD
128MB integrated video card
1.5GB Ram
Mostly seems ok here.  Can you post something that's wrong then SHOW what it should look like :-?This is what it should look like

and for the Dreamweaver Example  in that pallete i have up the BUTTONS are cut off and its not resizable so i'm a little stuck thereAnyone one know what it could be?Go to Start / Run and type in sfc /scannow....have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.

Solve : I can't delete a file?

Answer»

Okay, so last night I wanted to rename a file, but I couldn't, because the file was "in use". So, I made a copy of it thinking I could just rename the copy, do what I needed to do with it, and then delete it. No such luck. So I (stupidly) made a copy on the desktop, thinking that maybe it would WORK if it were in a different folder. Nope! So I restarted my computer, and still no luck. I even tried safe mode! What do I do?!?!

-John

Why do you need to delete it so bad?
Is it a virus?
If so, why is the name greyed out?
I'm not really bothered, just curious.
If you don't want to say what it is then don't, I won't be offended.
If you;re sure you need to delete it, use Killbox.
Hope this helps. It's just... um... some music i downloaded

Solve : Win32 Generic host?

Answer»

I can get onto internet then after a while i get a window come up saying there a problem with Win 32 Generic host  and says it needs to close down, it gives me the option to send error report or not and if i click any off them it doesnt let me connect BACK to the internet or view any pages until i restart my computer and after a while this happens again.  I am using Windows XP and is getting very annoying please helpHave you got the latest Windows Updates?
I believe this is a common problem, solved by a fairly recent hotfix.
If you don't have the latest updates, get them.
It may fix this issue, it may not, but it'll certainly make you more secure.
Get them, reboot, and tell us how it is.where do i get them from?Go to www.windowsupdate.com in IE.
Or open IE and choose Tools --> Windows Update.i use firefoxI know you do, but use IE for this.
Or get the IE Tab extension for Firefox and use that.
It won't work in Firefox, believe me.i`ve done it but it only seems to come up with that thing when i go on certain sites and when i open up frostwire.    Do you no any good places where i can sell me laptop its gettin 2 anoyin and i wan a apple oneWhich sites would that be?
Frostwire is great way to get viruses, be careful.
There are lots of places you could sell your laptop, but you won't get much for it.
If you mean it's getting annoying because of the errors, that will happen with all Windows PCs sooner or later.
I've never seen an error-free Windows PC.
Apple tends to be expensive, and think about whether you really want to go through the whole process of learning a new OS and so on.
To me, if you're that annoyed with Windows, Linux would be the best choice.
Do you want to continue troubleshooting this problem, or do you want to abandon it and start shopping for a new computer?bu were can i get music from?   i dont no because it just seems to slow my laptop and i just want it too be quick and feel new WITHOUT loadsa PROBLEMS comingYou can get music from many online stores, such as Napster, iTunes, HMV, Virgin . . . the list goes on.
If, as I suspect, you mean free music, this isn't the place to talk about it.
There are lots of sites devoted to free music from as yet unknown groups, but if you mean big groups, as I suspect you do, you'll have to turn to illegal means, such as file sharing, or legally ripping CDs.
File sharing is something we can't really discuss on this forum as it is illegal to share or download copyright material.
Frostwire will slow your laptop down because you've probably been downloading willy-nilly, and you're probably infected all over the place.
If you want your laptop to feel brand new, using Windows, a fresh install is the right thing to do, if you have a Windows CD.
If you don't have one, that option isn't available to you.
If you STILL want to use Windows, and have no problems, you'll just have to take more care of your laptop.
If you really want it to be quick, feel new, and have much less problems, seriously consider either a new laptop or a new OS.wats os?  so if i uninstall the frostwire then it`ll be alrite again?  i dont have a windows cd but i can do a full system restore etc?An OS is an Operating System.
Yours is Windows.
Alternatives include BSD and variants, *nix, and Mac OS.
Uninstalling Frostwire will not automatically make your system fine, you'll need to clean up after it and remove any malware you have been infected with.
If I were you, I'd do a full factory restore again, and take more care next time.
Or, if I had the money, I'd BUY a new laptop, with a Windows CD if I chose Windows.it gets well anoying keep doing that though cause it deltes everythin! lol  but i`l giv it a goThat's pretty much the idea of it.
It's the closest thing to a fresh install you can manage.
It may keep you going for a bit longer.
Just try and take more care.

Solve : Increasing tolerance for mouse?

I have Windows XP.

I hate how the mouse motions have to be so BLOODY PRECISE. Like, if I DOUBLE CLICK, and I drag the mouse ever so slightly between clicks, it won't register right. I want to increast the tolerance to about 10 pixels. How do I do this?

How do I make it so that every time I press (say) F12, my ramen timer program comes up, no matter what else I'm in at the time?

By the way, enjoy the ramen timer. To change the mouse settings, use TweakUI, available from here.
Hope that HELPS you.
I'm not sure about how to bind keys, I think Dilbert knows a program to do it for you. Here is the easiest way....

Make a shortcut to it, by right clicking the Ramentimer.exe program and going down to where it says, "Create Shortcut". Then once the shortcut is made right click it goto properties, and where it says "Shortcut key", just type in what ever you want like "F12" if you wanted.

Solve : XP Home SP updates question?

Answer»

Just loaded an old XP Home system, with no SP.

Do you have to load SP1 first then progress to SP2?

Or can a person just load SP2 right off?

Thanks,Fordtruckmaniac  ..... I believe you must start with SP1 first

dl65  Thanks dl65

I thought that I had read that somewhere. But wanted to double check.

I have SP2 on a disk but not SP1.

Fordtruckmaniac ..... You should be able to get it here.......
http://labmice.techtarget.com/ServicePacks/winxpsp1.htm

Theres a link to it on this page.

dl65  Thanks for the link.

Can I UPDATE the SP's before I validate my product key?

I have to grab a dialup modem before I can get online to validate my product key.Fordtruckmaniac.... are we talking about product activation or product key code ?  You have 15 days to activate XP .  I dont think that will effect getting the SP1 download.
Usually you would enter the 25 digit key during the intallation of XP .
Activation come after its installed .

dl65  Sorry about that. The proper WORD totally escaped me when I sat down to write you back.

Yes I was meaning activating Windows.

I did enter the product key number during the installation of Windows.

I did not know if I could just go ahead and install SP1 then on to SP2 before activating Windows.

Thanks,SP2 contains all updates which are in SP1 so no need to load SP1

This is extracted from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389

Quote

Microsoft Windows XP updates are distributed in service packs. Service packs help keep Windows XP current, and extend and update the functionality of your computer. Service packs are cumulative. Each new service pack contains all the fixes that are included with earlier service packs and any new fixes. You do not have to install an earlier version of a service pack before you install the latest version. For example, if you have already installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), you do not have to install Windows XP Service Pack 1a (SP1a).

Updates SINCE SP2 was issued will have to be downloaded from MS.

Good luckDusty is correct SP2 is accumulative so no need to install SP1...

Pre-install checklist is here including where you can order a CD from the Mothership...

Solve : can't dialup?

Answer»

Dell, XP, 2.8ghz, 512mb ram, 100gb HD

A friend of mine got this machine used and I INSTALLED AOL 9.0 and it connects fine on my DSL connection but it will not on her dial up connection.
I have talked to aol tech MANY times. and they have CONCLUDED that their SOFTWARE is installed OK and the trouble might be a firewall (I have disabled windows firewall), a virus or the modem (which I have changed once).
The installation downloaded the local access numbers OK and dials (step 1), Handshakes (step 2), initializes (step 3),talks to network (step 4) and (step 5)  but then gives an error message saying It was unable to make an internet connection.
      Please help anyone.    joe
Maybe this is silly, but are you changing the Connection setting so it's not set to Broadband?  My mom was having the same problem (AOL was telling her that it was a firewall), but it was as simple as changing Connection: Broadband to Connection: Home on the log-in screen.

Solve : Right Speaker stopped working?

Answer»

First of all, please let me apologize up front if this post drags on...  But I don't think this can be brief.  I own an emachines (model T-6522).  It has an 2.2 GIG AMD Athlon processor, 1 gig PC 3200 DDR RAM, 200 gig hard drive.  Graphics and sound on an integrated card.  One day while playing Medieval Total War, the right speaker started to fade and then it quit working altogether.  I have it hooked up to an offbrand 27" LCD TV, so I thought it was the TV.  After HOOKING up PC speakers to the computer, I found out that it wasn't.

I've:  a) tried updating the audio driver.  No dice.  b) deleted the audio driver and reinstalled it.  No dice.  c) ran the registry cleaner (Not sure why, it was recommended by someone).  No dice.  All diagnostics say the speakers should be working right.  The left one does...  just not the right.

Maybe the connector was bad?  I went out and bought a NICE, inexpensive Creative sound card, disabled the integrated sound, correctly installed the sound card, correctly installed the drivers and software that came with it...  Hooked the speakers up to the new card...  And the right speaker still doesn't freakin' work...

I'm now leaning TOWARD a problem with the motherboard.  I'm not an expert...  I know just enough to be dangerous...  Has anyone heard of anything this crazy?  I'm officially out of ideas.     :-?

Thanks,
The Prussian
it might sound a stupid question but have you tried other speakers on your computer. the speaker could have failed. the speaker itself or a break in the cable. you could try putting the left hand speaker into the right hand speaker channel to illiminate the speakers them selves.

hope this helps john Thanks for the reply...  I'm an idiot.  I figured the odds of the connector to my monitor being bad AND the set of speakers being bad were a million to one...  Maybe they are...  But that's what the problem was.  I hooked up ANOTHER set of ancient speakers from my basement and they worked fine.

Bad connector, then a bad set of speakers showing the same problem...  It's got to be a million to one.  Why can't I hit the lottery instead?

Thanks for the push in the right direction,
The PrussianBuy a ticket tomorrow...then you'll be able to get a new set of speakers and then some.

Yellow flag. You need a legal copy of Windows, not a patch. We are not allowed to help with pirated software and problems with it on this forum. Thanks.  Thank you. This is dissapointing because when I bought this computer I purchased it through a computer store, the guy has a ligit SHOP and builds them. He loaded Windows Xp on it, just recently I started getting the validation popups and he SAID I needed to come in for the patch. Is this common. If you can't answer, I understand. If you politely let him know someone suggested contacting MS about WGA failing i'll bet you will have a shiny new XP CD on request...

I reformatted my hard drive today, and when I go to run my Recovery CD's it stops on the second disk.  I went to HP tech support and says for that error message the cd is scratched or dirty to clean and try again.  I have done that several times and same thing.  I have floppys on win 3.1 but for my sons games he needs at LEAST win 98.  What can I do to fix this without having to buy my software again? THanks. MarkSometimes you can copy a damaged cd and the copy will work

Solve : Microsoft Word Problems?

Answer»

Hi, recently the layout on my word 2000 has changed so it looks like this:

Thanks

I was wondering if you could tell me how to get rid of those THINGS in the corners of the pages as they are really annoying me and ive been getting stressed trying to FIGURE out how to make them go away.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

It's an app I don't use but try View>Guidelines and untick Margins.

Good luckHey thanks for trying to help but that doesnt seem to have worked :-/ I'll have to keep searching If you cant get it working, a good alternative for Microsoft Word is Open Office.org, good free program that works really well....
http://www.download.com/OpenOffice-...tml?tag=lst-0-1+1 for OpenOffice.
I switched about a year ago and never looked back.
Also look at Abiword as an alternative if needed.
Hope you get it fixed anyway.I have the same situation in Word 2003 and would also like to know how to clear those corner markers.  I posted a question in this newsgroup: microsoft.public.word.pagelayout.  If I get an answer, I'll post it here.forget about word. get openoffice. I rarely even TOUCH word since i got openoffice.SuperAlex, here's a link that was posted in a reply I got in the newsgroup: Margin marks or CROP marks appear on each corner of the page when you open a document in Word.  I tried it but it did not work for me.OK, problem solved here.    I RECEIVED another reply in the newsgroup with a link to http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.word.docmanagement/msg/cc38d8ccab08d07f

If you've never made any changes in the registry and WANT to try this but are reluctant to do so, post back for more help.  I actually received two replies, the second one advising me to backup that part of Registry before making any changes.  That's always  a good idea.  To do that, "select the LanguageResources key
mentioned in the post and use File > Export to make a backup (as a .reg
file) of the entire contents of the key. Then if you don't like the results,
you can just double-click the .reg file to restore the original contents."Hey,

Thanks a lot for all your help I tried all of the suggestions and eventually I got rid of the corner marks I think I will try using openoffice too. Save myself from future microsoft word related stress. Thanks again for all your help it really is very much appreciated.

After boot up it will go to a blue screen and give me a page fault error in a non-paged area. I have relayed the OS (not reloaded, i.e, did not reformat) and I still have to issue, however I can boot into safe mode and do everything else. I removed the S/C because the initial BSD said something about a Sound card. I tried the stop error cose it gave me into the Microsoft KB but no effect. I have not LOADED ANY new hardware or software in the last 3 months. I have ran Anti-virus and Ad-Aware and have found nothing. The video card fan is making noise but I dont really think that the problem but I could be wrong.
Oh and the hard drives are NOT on a raid, just running a Main and 2 storage.

Well here is your information, courtesy of Microsoft. By the way I would check out the video card fan also, that is not a good sign. It also looks like it just happens to be the very same video card that is giving you the fan problem is also giving you the bsod, are you sure you have SP2?

8-)fffreakYes positive on the SP2, and I meant that had not installed any new hardware or software, i.e new sound card or any new programs.
I removed the RAM and went stick to stick and they all booted fine then Blue screened. Now I changed video cards, put in a 7800 GTX  PcI-e card and got NO video at all now. I put back the original 600GT video card and still no video. I am now leaning toward a bad MoBo and am thinking of replacing it with a newer one, probsably a 945 board.

Any thoughts?

Solve : Windows install says no Hard drive found?

Answer»

I want to format my hard drive and reinstall my copy of Windows XP since I've been having some problems with corruption and it's nearly three years old to boot.

The problem is, when I try to enter the Windows setup with the INSTALATION CD, the setup tells me I don't have any Hard Drives installed and it can't continue.

That's what's confusing me since I'm right now using that computer and obviously accessing the hard drives.

I'm not sure what kind of system info you guys will need or even how to get it but I do know that I'm using a SeaGate SCSI hard drive model number 7200.7

Any ideas on how to help?I don't believe it is a scsi check to make sure, because I THINK you may be talking about Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 SATA. Also what kind of motherboard and processor do you have?

8-)fffreakAh, You're right it is an SATA.

I've got a Pentium 4 at 2.80 GHz with a ASUS P4S800D-X MotherboardVery early on in the install process you will see a prompt for RAID drivers PRESS F6 and have your SATA drivers HANDY...

patio.  8-)Ah. So an SATA is a RAID drive? Cool.

Where would I get Drivers for my Harddrive? I can't remember if I had a DISK that came with it.Visit the HDD manuf. site...they should be available there.

They might even be on your MBoard driver CD if it came installed that way.

I turned on my speakers today to listen to a tutorial, . .

and there it was again, the Mysterious Trap Door Sound ,

It sounds a whole lot like a trap door in a castle cellar, that suddenly opens

rusty hinges., and it can be a little startling as it is eeerriiee.

I thought, my detection software episodes or AOL's spy Zapper, or HJT,

WOULD have at least detected it by now.

What is this, . . . I can not be the only one this is happening to, although I

have searched previous posts for strange sounds and noises, I found

Jp, are you confused?  I posted the comment about "Celtron Celeron with 128 MB of Ram", not Patio, and I said nothing in a previous post about your sound  scheme or audio.

BELIEVE me, you will not find any savvy Win XP user who would not want more than 128MB of RAM.  128MB is great for Win 98/98SE/ME.  But, it's a very small amount for Win XP. Increasing that to 256MB would make a very noticeable improvement in your computer's performance.  And, MANY XP users prefer to have at least 512MB. Depending on the type of memory you have, you could also just add 256MB, for a total of 384MB.

Edit: LEFT out words will not from "Believe me, you will not find any savvy ..."Soybean,

Sounds like you and patio have a difference of opinion, nevermind, . .

I wasn't to sure what I have here, I UPGRADE from a note nook, with W-98,

and a desk top is preety good move, unless you traveling.

I'll look into the RAM increase, that's inspiring.

I have noticed that when I make some rapid key strokes the computer makes some noticable sounds catching up I think, any way it sounds as if it is straining and it sounds precarious at times, I have noticed that when I am drawing on fax tools page, this happems when things get a little to complex, and some times it locks with error message and if I haven't saved the drawing, I have to close and it will not be there.

Maybe the RAM's can't take it?

That Buddy List noise was funny, I checked it out still checking.

Thanks.
Jp

Installing an OS without using a CD?...Maybe you should copy the CD installer of XP Home Edition and put it into your HDD. Then double click the setup...That's the only thing i know in installing without a CD installer of XP Home Edition.Thank you.  Yes, the cd has to be copied to a folder but an .inf file must be constructed to contain the responses, such as the PRODUCT Key and Time Zone etc.  That's the bit I'm searching for in order to make the reinstal completely automatic once started.

Isn't it the installer of XP has an .inf, right? which we found in the installer which is autorun.inf. Is that your problem?...Isn't it the installer has COMPLETE files needed in order to have a clean installation right! Quote

Autorun.inf is just to automatically open the cd and start the Setup.exe program.  The .inf file I want to create has to contain all the information which users have to enter when Setup is running, such as the Name, Product Code, Location etc.  Setup accesses the file instead of waiting for INPUT VIA the keyboard.

A typical Win.98 Setup.exe .inf file can be viewed here.

It will explain how to do exactly what you want to do.

dl65  Thank you dl65.

I had Googled many times, guess I must have overlooked this site.

hi newbie  here.

it sounds like you need an unattended install for this.

try this link

http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/

hope this helps

cheers john
Thank you John.  My original request was how to create an unattended reinstall of XP without using a cd for the actual installation, i.e. from the hard drive, not how to make a cd to do the job.

The site suppled by dl65 showed exactly what I wanted and I can report success.

Thank you for your time and interest.

Solve : Dr. Watson Postmortem DeBugger?

Answer»

Occasionally, and seamingly more often now, I get a WINDOW OPENING up that is entitled DrWatson Postmortem DeBugger. This window gives me the option to send or don't send a report to Microsoft but regardless of which option I click (usually don't send) the PROGRAM shuts down and often freezes my computer to the point where I have to perform a HARD reboot. What is this pain in the *censored* and how, if it's not a necessary function, can I get rid of it?
Please help,
BGWith SP2 came some problems with Dr. Watson. It's bad enough that he starts snooping around whenever there is an error, pushing an already unstable system over the edge sometimes, but it appears that there is sometimes an error in Dr. Watson, prompting yet another clone of Dr. Watson to start.

None of this does most of us any good. And most people don't use the debugger, anyway. If you want to disable him, run regedit.

Find:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AeDebug
and change the value of Auto to "0" including the quotes. It is probably "1" now.

If you'd rather just control what the good Dr. does when there is an error, Run: drwtsn32
and set the options.Thank you and I TRIED going to regedit and could not find that file. Can you help me find it?
Thanks,
BGok, do this, bring up the  Run command thats start button, click on Run then type in regedit.exe click OK, now when the registery comes up GO UP TO the word "Edit" and click on that, then scroll down to the word "Find" then in the window type >>  AeDebug  << then click on Find Next, when it is done searching look in the right screen and change the value of Auto to "0"  No quotes. It is probably "1" now.

Solve : Windows closes on start up?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a brand new XP machine (P4 512Mb) and I had some problems installing a Netgear WG311T wireless card (that number is off the top of my head, hope it's right!) which resulted in several freezes and reboots.

I now know there is an issue with XP SP2 and have the latest download from Netgear, BUT.....

The PC decided to suddenly die. Every now and then I could get it to start booting up, but at best I got a Windows screen saying "Windows is closing". Having given up on it last night, my daughter told me it later BURST into life and closed down again by itself.

[size=12]Any IDEAS what is GOING on and why? [/size] :-?

I'm going to try and get it up in Safe Mode when I get home from work.

Thanks for any help you can give.Did the system initially set up OK / you only had the problem after trying to install the Netgear wireless card?  I'd try ANOTHER wireless card first, then return the system to the vendor if that doesn't work.

I recently set up a workstation on a network (brand new system out of the box) and it gave me nothing but fits.  After doing a non-DESTRUCTIVE then destructive reinstall of the OS it still wouldn't work right I told my client to take it back and get another one.

Alan <><  Thanks for the reply Alan.

It was working fine, apart from the problems during the card install. Got to the point where it would power up for 2 or 3 seconds and then die. Wouldn't start again unless I disconnected the power cable and reconnected again.

Has it happens, I got home early today and phoned the company who made it. After describing the problem he (rightly) diagnosed a stuck power button. I have a temporary fix, having swapped the power connector for the reset button connector (i.e. my reset button is now my power on button) on the m-board and he is sending me a new front panel.

Hopefully, that will be the last of my problems!

Solve : Toasted harddrive?

Answer»

Well, It happened all at once. The transmission on my Ford Explorer went and then my hard drive went this past WEEK. I have a few questions. 1. I will have to re-install XP  and is this going to cause a problem with validation?. 2. I backed up my C drive to my D drive using the utility in XP. How much will I be able to recover?  I have my OLD hard drive in the freezer hoping I can get it running long enough to recover everything that I need just in case I can't get anything from my back-up. 3. The computer I'm using now is one that I purchased  and it has a BOOTLEG copy of WINDOWS XP Pro on it. I'm curious if I'm allowed to install a legit copy of XP Home from my disks? Quote

If it is legal it should not. You will have to go through validation with the mothership.

If that works you will need to copy the data off quickly - to a laptop, across a network, etc. No guarantees about what you will find.

If you have a retail version of XP Pro you can install it on one machine. If it is not installed elsewhere and it is legit call Microsoft and they will walk you through it. If it is some sort of restore CD set you will not be able to.Thanks GX 1 Man. New hard drive installed formatted and validated. I was able to recover all the data from the old hd except for my e-mail.If you have someone flush the fluid and replace the filter and modulator on that beast you might not need a new TRANNY... Quote

See there, your luckwasn't ALL bad. Sometimes that freezer thing works.  As I mentioned, I couldn't get my e-mail. Is this possible? I searched for over 2 hrs. and could only find my address book. What e-mail client were you using? If Outlook, you need the .pst files. If Outlook Express you need the .dbx files.
