Solve : Virus??? or Windows??

Answer»

I have an hp computer with an lcd SCREEN. ONE day it was fine but the next day I turn on the computer and it seems its much darker. I open my brightness/ contrast controls and fix it. As I WORK a little the brightness pops up by itself and starts adjusting by itself up down.. down back to 0 or up to 100. I'd try to fix it but couple seconds or minutes later its back up playing the controls. As I am writing this post my brightness thing is up and its going up from 100 to 0 and back. Sometimes the screen just gets stuck there and i cant turn it off. I restarted my computer it wasnt dark this time but then the bright/cont screen keeps popping up adjusting by itself.. Ive scanned but it didnt find any viruses. What could this be?when you say the window is popping up, do you mean the same window that would pop up if you hit the menu button on the monitor? or are you talking about some other software on your comp? If its the same as the menu that you press on the Monitor, then that means theres a short in your monitor somewhere and you need to replace the monitorTry that monitor on another computer and try another monitor on this computer to isolate where the problem really is.Most graphics card drivers install utilities capable of changing the brightness of the display. If you're using ATI or Nvidia there should be an icon on the task bar. See if there is anything suspect in there.

When the brightness changes, is there a corrosponding change on the monitors options? For example, if your brightness is 50, and it suddenly brightens up, does the brightness stay at 50 or move?yes the window is the same one as when i press the menu on my moniter. and when it becomes duller the number goes down. and vice versa... in my task bar there was a program that had the word monitor in it... i closed it too fast to remember lol. the thing is that its always been there and there wasnt EVER a problem? I dont understand why it randomly started to do this. So far its been 5 minutes and the problem hasnt occured yet... I'm guessing that was the problem. What is this program for? Will I need it or is it just some extra thing?

SO far I think its fixed So thankyou so much!..I was wrong!!!!!!!! 10 minutes later brightness comes up and goes back to !! aaarrgghhh  when i turn it up it goes down its like someone is fighting with me from another computer but it cant be I scanned!

Maybe its something in my processes!??

i dont even bother to change it no more now it keeps popping up and its at 0 RIGHT now and its staying htere...

Whats a short? i read a post above about it being a short in my monitor?Have you tried loading into safe mode, or VGA mode. If its ok in safe mode then its a driver problemIf the actual options box for the monitor's OSD appears, it is a fault with the monitor. Quote

Try that monitor on another computer and try another monitor on this computer to isolate where the problem really is.

Did you try this simple advice?

Solve : Slow boot up time.?

Answer»

Laptop takes extremely long time to boot up. I can't RUN programs for up to 5 minutes waiting for the my laptop to LOAD every thing. I thing my computer is opening up to many programs. It automatically opens programs like messager, etc. How do I stop it from opening up all these different programs? :-/The best place to start is from WITHIN each program, LOOKING for options not to start.
Then you can ALSO try msconfig>startup.
Take each program one at a time, if you have any problems then name the program in here and someone will help you to disable it.

Solve : Need Help! Computer HD won't Detect.?

Answer»

Here Is The Deal!

Through Steam They are doing a free 4 day trial or something of the Game The Ship (The ship is actually pretty fun) I loaded the game, loaded a map but the map stoped loading... So I ctrl+Alt+Deleted it and proceeded to close out of the game, computer was STILL FROZEN so I closed out of steam then explorer. When explorer came BACK it gave me a weird message something like "i+exlporer==l;..." etc...Anyway I said ok then the system locked up beeped a few times. (at this point I was like "oh forget it!") I manually rebooted or as some would say a hard reboot. Now it wont detect the harddrive when booting back up. I have tryed booting in safemode, I have tryed last known config. I have even tryed repairing using winxp CD. all I get is "Harddrive not detected".

I am not about to loose years and years of date/work/everything I have done on computers for aslong as I have known.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

EDIT:
I have Windows XP Home I belive.ah yes, the possible outcome while playing Russian-Roulette(Sometimes known as Hard Shutdowns ). This might be a long shot but try actually going into your computer physically detach the HDD, re-attach it and make sure all the connections are nice and snug and then try to boot up and see what happens. That might fix the problem but im not 100% sure... ive seen crazier things fix even weirder problems lolI am glad you understand what i am talking about. I have already opened it up and made sure all the cords are plugged in and "snug". D=No need for help. omg I got it working Thanks for anyone who did take the time to read it and tryed to help.

My ideas: Restart more then once, Keep trying last known config more then once.

Thank you HDL_CinC_Dragon for your help.I would download and run a hard drive fitness test
from the manufaturer of the hard drive. :-?

Solve : unistaller error?

Answer»

When uninstalling, I get an unistaller error message:

"You do not have sufficient access to remove AOL Coach Version `.0(Build:20020823.1) from the Add or Remove Programs list.

Please contact your system administrator."

I recently reformatted the hard drive on the computer and am trying to rebuild it.  I hadn't done good maintenance on the 3.5 year old computer, so it was having lots of troubles, and I did have authority AUTHORIZATION ISSUES before reformating also.

I am having other error messages that have forced my computer to shut down or restart too, but I'm waiting for them to COME up to post them here for help.

The OS is Windows xp service PACK 2 (build 2600) (I don't know what the build 2600 is about, but it's listed on my computer profile summary?)

Thanks for taking time to help!
stephanAre you the Administrator for this machine? Is AOL currently installed? If not using it, how did this get loaded?

What version of Windows and service pack? Is it a legal install?

What are "authority authorization issues"?

If you have hardware issues then Windows is irrelevant. Let's get ALL of the issues out in the open now.

See below.

AOL was installed from the "Applications" cd that came with the computer and is asked for during the OS reinstillation PROCESS.

And, I purchased the hardware/software from gateway.

Solve : What do I do if mouse won't work??

Answer»

Hello Everyone!

I'm sorry if this is a repeat question.

Does ANYONE know which keys to use in order to access "file" "format" "Edit" and other options in Word 2003 and Internet EXPLORER 7 when the mouse isn't working or a screen freezes?

I recall a friend using CTL and/or ALT and either arrow keys or tab.

Any help will be appreciated.

I have Windows XP
Office 2003
IE 7
512 MB of RAM
Dell Mouse
Press Alt, then use the arrow keys to go left/right along menus.
Press Enter to select an option, right to open sub menus, left to close sub menus.
HOWEVER, maybe you should be addressing the issue that MAKES this necessary. Quote

Thanks for the answer. I appreciate it!! By the way, I did get my mouse problem resolved -- Dell sent me a new one. However, I wanted to know what to do if the mouse malfunctioned again, so I don't have to go through the irritation of trying to make a broken mouse work until I got it fixed or got a new one.No problem, thanks for posting back.
Glad you got your issue resolved. You can use MouseKeys to control the cursor VIA the keyboard.

Solve : changing "program access and defaults" problem?

Answer»

I can't change the program access and defaults. I am logged on as an administrator. I change the defaults, and hit OK. I get no error message, just no change after a reboot.Need more information. Also would help if you list your system SPECS. ALTHOUGH knowledge of your OS would be useful (I assume XP), your system specs aren't really that relevent to the problem.

What program settings are you trying to change (browser? etc) and to what are you changing them (Firefox etc)?

Did your computer COME pre-installed with WINDOWS and "stuff"? The company may have made their own custom settings, but I don't see why you can't change them. And now this poster has apparently been abducted by aliens.

Solve : Everything on my computer is sooooo slowwww?

Answer»

I mean you can't do anything on my computer without waiting forever. The internet is slow and so are all the applications and games on the computer.

It's a 3 year old Compaq with a 2.80 GHz processor with 256 MB ram and it has 61.38 MB ram free.
It has Windows XP.
What's the problem?? I've ran Norton Antivirus and Ewido neither found any viruses or that sort of thing. Dh wants me to put in the shop but I don't think it's worth it. You can buy another PC just like it for $398.00. I don't see the point in sinking money into for a professional.

What could be causing this??

ThanksDid that computer come with CDs containing the original software, including Windows, that was installed on the computer?  Have you ever formatted, i.e. erased, the hard drive and done a fresh installation of the original software, including Windows?

Do you have any spyware removal tools installed, and are you using them?  Was the slowness a gradually worsening problem or did it happen RATHER sudden?  If a sudden change, what happened just before the slowdown?

Where are you getting the "61.38 MB ram free" info?  You mentioned games.  What games are you talking about?

Do you ever run DISK Cleanup?  Do you ever defragment the hard drive?

My husband reformatted it about a month ago b/c at that time it kept LOCKING up on me. This has been a gradual problem. I've run Spybot and Adaware they found nothing. I also ran Norton Anti virus, Ewido and Microsoft Malicious software tool.. they all found nothing.

The 61.38 MB RAm that is free is coming from the system information.
My husband did disk defragment and clean up after he reformatted.

Only 256 RAM and Norton is a bad combo, especially with all of the standard XP eye candy and unneeded services.

I suspect it has always been slower than it NEEDS to be. Adding another 256 RAM and ditching Norton would be where I would start. Removal instructions are on the Symantec site. You can't just do it with Add and Remove Programs.  Here's a test you might try; it relates to the "eye candy" GX1_Man mentioned.  Right on My Computer and select Properties.  Select the Advanced tab, click on the Settings button under Performance, click on the circle for "Adjust for best performance" and then click on Apply and OK.  You should notice a difference in performance.well the first thing i recommend is that you get at the very least an additional 256 megs of RAM and depending on what games your talking about you might just want to shoot for a gig.... another option to look at is possible adware, spyware, malware in general. Goto download.com and search for "ad aware". Its a great PROGRAM and gets rid of adware quite nicely. The next program to get would be SpyBot search and destroy. also a great program for that kind of stuff. Also try defragmenting your hard drive. I know you said you said you already ran Norton but thats mainly for viruses not adware and spyware. Give thsoe programs a try and see if that helps at all...

Solve : Windows XP System Restore?

Answer»

Can anyone help me with Windows XP System RESTORE?  I deleted some files by mistake.  I tried to use System Restore.  Every one of the restore points over the last month generates the message:  " Unable to restore computer to this system restore point.  Please choose another restore point and try again"

THANKS for your help!If System Restore will not restore your computer, the only things you can do is restore a backup that you made prior to the problem occurring or reinstall Windows or PERHAPS EDIT the Windows Registry.

What problem prompted you to attempt a system restoration? What files did you delete? :-?Are they still in the recycle bin?

The recycle bin is designed to give mistakes a second chance.

Sort of like fool me twice shame on me.

Did you delete them and then empty the recycle bin?

Have you tried booting in safemode and doing restore?

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/app_system_restore_hss_safemode.mspx?mfr=truehttp://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

Do you have a real Windows CD or a restore CD or what?I was having a CONFLICT with Windows Explorer 7.0 and AT&T/Yahoo DSL Version of Explorer and or some of the browser accessories.  I deleted ALL AT&T/Yahoo software via Windows add/remove.  Unfortunately,  I neglected to save my yahoo archive, which had contact information I need.  I wanted to use system restore to go back and begin the process again after saving the archive.

Thanks for your help!

Solve : "NTLDR is missing" help!?

Answer»

Hey there, how do you do?

i have this problem with my laptop. When i switch it on it goes straight to a black screen where it SAYS, "NTLDR is missing". I have tried using my recovery disk but it gets to the end of the fresh recovery and says something like, "preload.tag invalid iniboot",(it doesnt say exactly that but along those lines) and then goes right back to "NTLDR is missing". I havent tried alot of things as im not that good on repairing computers.

i havent got a windows xp, the computer came with windows xp already installed. Is there anyway of repairing this without using an Windows XP disc?  Can i create a windows xp boot cd or something that could get me into windows recovery console? i have tried creating boot disks from different tutorials on the INTERNET, but i am not sure i understand the concept of boot disks fully. I am lost anyhow, the computer just wont boot after "NTLDR is missing". I can go into a dos menu by pressing F2, but it is just not having it. i would APPRECIATE your help...

laptop specs

thanks    :-?The Recovery CD should allow you to get into a Recovery Console, where the drive can be formatted if necessary. Which kind of Acer Travelmate is this? As in, what MODEL name? I ask because I'm looking for a recovery console tutorial, and I'm finding answers for all sorts of PCs.thanks for the reply. it is a travelmate 2420. the recovery cd only lets me restore the computer to factory settings and at the end of doing so, it shows the second message about 'preload.tag boot.ini' or something. Before you reinstall anything...read the following article from Microsft.

Solve : Strange CPU Usage and Slowdown?

Answer»

First off, I have Windows XP Home.  Recently while gaming, mostly World of Warcraft, I noticed that every 3-4 seconds the entire game will lock up for a moment.  This happens consistantly during play and led me to try to figure out why.  When I bring up the Windows task manager and look at the performance tab, I can see the CPU usage spiking to around 50-60% in about the same timing as the hiccups WoW experienced.  I assume this is the cause of it, but I do not know why this is happening.  Any ideas?Look in the processes tab - what is using the CPU power?
That'll tell you which process is eating your resources, and then you can learn how to solve it.The CPU usage goes to 'System' every few seconds when it spikes. We need more INFO, could you tell us your system specs?Okay.    Like I said it has Windows XP Home.  It has an Intel Pentium 4 2.66Ghz CPU, 1 gig of RAM, 80 gig hard drive, GeForce 6600 VIDO card.  I'm not sure what you need exactly, if it's more than that let me know.  I also run Norton antivirus and it doesn't show that there's anything wrong atm.

Just to refresh, my CPU usage is still spiking to 40-50% every few seconds.  The process 'System' is using that percentage of the CPU when it spikes for a moment before going back to 'System Idle Process' then repeating.

I'm betting it has something to do with your video card. Have you tried updating to the latest drivers.I just updated my drivers, the problem PERSISTS.  I failed to mention in the original post that I just noticed the drain on the CPU from the hiccups in gaming, but it occurs all the time - even when I have just rebooted my system.

For example I just now restarted to complete the driver update.  As soon as I could check the process monitor/performance tab, it already showed the same pattern. So the CPU usage spike happens all the time in the same pattern?
Are you malware-free?This is odd are you sure it is "System" and not System.exe? What is the memory usage in K(Kilobytes) when your computer spikes? So this is normal? How long has this been happening for? What was the last thing you did before this started happening?Yeah, it's just 'System' that sits at the BOTTOM of the list normally with 'System Idle Process'.  The mem usage actually stays the same (240 K) when the CPU usage shoots up to 40-50%.The first bit sounds normal, the CPU usage doesn't.
Is there anything running in the background?

This sounds pretty normal to me, as when I check mem usage it is only 220K. But looks like I have to sit out on this one. But We'll keep the light on. LOL

I first noticed this occuring while gaming, I really can't tie it down to any one event in particular.  I've run Norton antivirus and that didn't pick up on anything.  If you have anything else you would reccomend running, I'm open for suggestion.

This occurs when nothing else is running, even immediately after a restart.

Solve : My problem is, after turing on the computer, inter?

Answer»

My problem is, after turing on the computer, internet explorer will work fine for a while (sometimes 5-10min) but after CLOSING and trying to re-open internet explorer, my computer freezes.  On the IE tab I am in, it says "Connecting" and then freezes. I am OCCASIONALY able to open the task manager and close iexplorer.exe under the PROCESSES menu. But I then notice iexplorer.exe is using about 90% of cpu. Another item I notice is svchost.exe uses up to 70%cpu and fluctuates with the iexplorer.exe PROCESS. I have repaired windows, reinstalled the Winsocks, ran antiviruses (found 3 trojans and REMOVED them), ran Hijackthis (which leaves me about 15 messages about missing files), and also run Adaware multiple times. Solve : Remote Assistance Queries?

Answer»

Just out of curiosity, I have STARTED to use remote assistance today, and as such I'm not heaps familiar with the technical connection side or things. I managed to get it working numerous times with one person, but two other people it could not "Resolve Remote Host Connection". One person connected through another computer, the other had four CONNECTING through the same modem. The latter disabled their firewall and the FIRST did not, but it did not connect to either of them, and I was wondering what else it could be. I opened the invitation file with notepad for the latter of the two, and it appeared to be their local connection address that it sent, so I changed it to their I.P. address and this still did not work, so I'm guessing I maybe did not connect via the right port. From memory it was 3308 or 3380 that it tried to connect on. Anyway, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.Correction, it was port 3389.I doubt I can help but I think more info is needed before anyone can help.  What software are using to do this?  Are these computers running Win XP?  Which version of XP?  Running WinXP HE SP2 on a 1157mhz duron processor, 100gig via two hard drives, and 578mb PC133 ram. I'm using the built in windows remote assistance software.Did you try their OUTER IP address or Local IP address? I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be the outer IP address that you need to use. Go here to see the outer IP address.I tried bothThat seems to difficult for me to answer, but you could try RealVNC, that is what I use and it seems to work really well.Yeah, I generally do for local networks and such, but when it's someone over the internet who is a complete novice, I need this to work so they don't have to do anything.

Ok I don't know if the websites might have helped, but one thing I would try is to unplug you USB devices and try to reboot(then do system restore), If not try to boot into safemode(then do system restore). If that doesn't work try putting in your WinXP cd if you have one and do a repair install. If all else fails you COULD reformat your harddrive.the is the error

Solve : Publisher files not formating correctly?

Answer»

I have prepared a couple publisher files and emailed them to myself.  They look correct when I view them.  I've also emailed them to my wife's computer from publisher and they also look fine there.

Then I try to forward from my email to her email and the formatting goes awry as soon as I click on "Forward".

I can forward from her computer to mine and it works fine.

I am using Outlook 2002 and she is using Outlook Express.  My Outlook is set to HTML email format.

Not sure what else to try.

GwayneSeems like you're just experimenting or testing.  What's the purpose of all this?I have an online business that I am marketing to contacts.  I make TELEPHONE CONTACT first and then send 3 newsletter type emails (Publisher) before contacting again.

Well, I basically duplicated your procedure but could not duplicate the problem.  I sent an email from Publisher 2003 to myself, at my main email account, and retrieved it with Outlook Express.  Then, I forwarded that message to another email address of mine.  It went out and then I retrieved it with Outlook Express.  I had no problem forwarding the message or receiving the forwarded message.

You would normally not be forwarding ONE of these messages to your wife's computer, right?  And, if you initially send all messages from Outlook and it displays properly at the client's end, is the issue you're raising really a problem?  Perhaps you should find another computer, one at at different location, and do some addtional testing; you might ask one of your contacts to give you feedback or ask a friend or relative to verify that they could receive it in proper format.I think the problem is with Outlook 2002.

When I originally send it I send it from Publisher.  Now I KNOW, that opens a window with my Outlook 2002 and sends it.  That is received everywhere that I send it, wholly intact.  It's when I open the file after receiving it into Outlook 2002 on the computer from which I originally sent it (does that make sense?  I send it to myself) and click on "Forward".  Right at that point the formatting goes all wrong.

I'll try saying it another way:
I create the file in Publisher and then click "File/Send/to mail recipient" and put my email address in and send it.  I then switch to Outlook 2002 and watch as Outlook sends the file.  I then see it APPEAR in my inbox and open it there.  It looks perfect.  Then I click on "Forward" and the page is immediately changed and unreadable.

I can send it to my wife's computer with Outlook Express and then forward it from there with no problem.

Solve : Re: Blue Screen Stop Error Code 0x000000D1?

Answer»

Does the blue screen come up after a reboot too?
In other words, is this stopping you using your PC, or is it a one-off?
What changed before this HAPPENED?The error is a COMMON one:

http://www.google.com/search?q=0x000000D1+XP+Professional+site:microsoft.com&hl=en&lr=&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2005-29,GGLG:en&start=0&sa=N

To narrow it down, does the error message mention any file (such as one that ends with a file name extension of .SYS)?

Do you have a real XP CD if needed?

Again, some history on the machine would be helpful. What did happen prior to this? Any other known PROBLEMS?

Solve : Having really bad problems with svchost.exe?

Answer»

Ok. the process svchost.exe has started using 80-99% of my cpu and 100+ MB of ram at certain times. Normaly it's using ~30mb ram and using no cpu but it randomly JUMPS to using all of it and my computer basically locks up untill its done

It did this on my old computer too but only after I upgraded to SP2.. and now it did it on this computer after I downloaded some updates from Microsoft Update. It's only done it once on this one so far but if its the same as my other one it will happen again and again, and it is extremely annoying

Here's the list of what it's doing I got from "tasklist /svc"

does anyone have any idea on why this happens or what I can do about it?

Edit: this is with window XP homeif your just now updating to sp2 there are countless updates to be installed so LET it run its course. Or turn of automatic updates, "Not Recomended". if your computer is locking up and not letting  the process get finished I would sudgest "Process Tamer"
http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/proctamer/

registration is free....
This is perfectly fine as I just tried this and got around the same results of svchost.exe as you did. How much RAM do you have, because I would recommend at least 256MB RAM (though it will run with 128 not recommended because it is pretty darn slow).I didn't just not get sp2 that was on my old computer, this one CAME with it.

fffreak, I have 1gb ram and an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ cpu

It hasen't done this since and it seems like no computer website ive been to knows why it did in the first place so i'll just let this go unless it happens again

Solve : doesn't shut down?

Answer» HI,

I was wondering if i could get some help here. I have a laptop that runs on XP Pro. Just recently, i noticed that every time during the shutdown process, windows saves the settings, then close the network connection and finally shutdown.

I don't know why windows just stops at the EVENT of "closing network connection". It SEEMS to me that it hangs or freeze. At first, i left it there overnight THINKING that it should turn off by itself as soon as windows finishes whatever it needs to do. The next morning when i came in, the laptop's still on and windows's still trying to close the connection.

Have I missed anything here? I need your advice here.

Thank you in advance

Lets do some regular maintenence on that machine first if you haven't in awhile:
Right click the C: drive in My Computer and select Properties.
In the first window is disk cleanup...run that.
Then select tools and run both error checking and defrag...both of these might TAKE some time so be patient.

After this update all your anti-malware apps and run the scans.

Post back with the results...Hi Patio,

Thank you for your reply.

I have cleaned up the C-drive and defragmented it. It is still the same.
However it shut down properly after running chkdsk. Then, the problem happens again.

What's the cause behind this? what holds up windows from closing network connection?

In addition, i have disable pretty much every processes at the startup using msconfig. This too doesn't bring any impacts at all.

Thank you in advanceIf you have the time, press Ctrl, Alt, Del and click Task Manager and select the Processes tab.  Write down every running process and post a reply here with the list of processes.  One of us will try to figure out what process might be causing the problem and how to fix it.

I cant pin down exactly when the problem began--I got the wife a new computer with bells and wistles and the computer shop had this one to swap data to the new one !
sometime there after i ran  Norton and superspyware distroyer  next time I went to view the sites -I got a window that said I need abobe flash player !!!???  Funny it worked before !

I had the exact same problem. I then went to help on the Adobe site. I found a section why won't my videos PLAY. I then found a link to uninstall, which i did. I then reinstalled flash player and can now view vids on You tube!!!!

Now a happy guy.

Let me know if this works for you. also if you need the links, get in touch.

PaulTry uninstalling and reinstalling the flash player, as suggested by pdreeves, and see if that helps.
If not, then a fresh install may be the easy option.
MAKE SURE you have an original and genuine XP Cd though, and BACK UP anything you want to keep.
A fresh install will wipe any crap you have on there and let you start again, often increasing performance and reducing annoyances.
I also notice you have both Home and Pro - are they both legal?
If so, do you need both?
For a fresh install, I'd recommend using Pro, as it has a few extra FEATURES etc.
Remember though - if it's not legal you'll RUN into problems.
If you can't back up stuff or don't want to reload software etc, try uninstalling/reinstalling both Java and flash player.
I wouldn't bother with the PC shop, you can get free help here
Post back and tell us if this works, what you plan to do, etc.PDREEVS-Thanks so much -!   I will FOLLOW your advise -!

PS-> i went to another yahooo video link and it came up with a flash player  in-op warning --I would think the 2nd user would have to access the same player to make the vids play on the side 2!
Thanks again _RandyI FIXED IT --I FIXED IT --I FIXED IT --4 HRS WORK --BUT I DID IT YYeeaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy

Solve : all, or most of my .exe does not work.?

Answer»

hi,

Everytime I try to open an .exe FILE, a box pops up saying it is an unknown file, and windows does not know which program to use to open this file.  It is an .exe, so there really isn't any program used to open it.  I did a search online, and I found that it MIGHT be a PROBLEM with my registry, so I tried accessing regedit, however windows GAVE me the same message "this file is an unknown file..." etc.   I can't use system restore either, because it is an .exe.  Are there any ways of fixing this without re installing windows?  (BTW, this problem began after I rebooted).Probably some malware caused this especially if you didn't do anything unusual.

What are you using for protection?

Can you get to safe mode and try a system restore?

The problem appears to be one of file associations.

Do you have any important data to back up if you cannot fix this?I can't search for malware either seeing as my malware scan is an .exe and also, i can't use cmd as that is .exe as well.  Well then you are ready for a format and reinstall, or at the least a repair install.

Do you have a shiney Windows CD that says Microsoft all over it, or what? What version of Windows?

This will not solve the issue with what caused these problems. As I said, probably malware.

Solve : Windows install trouble?

Answer»

My brothers computer (dell 3000/ win xp home, 1 gig ram, 80 gig hd) had a black screen this morning after leaving it on LAST night. I came over and rebooted it. The computer wouldnt load. I just decided to do a clean sweep. I formated the HD and went to reload win xp but when it starts to copy files it keeps saying it cant copy most of the files. I tried another cd and I keep getting the same THING.  It gives me 3 choices. Retry, skip, and cancel set up. If I skip it, thinking it might only be 1 file, I keep gettin the same thing over and over again. The only thing I can think of is part of the HD is bad and it cant copy the files to it. Any Ideas??? Thanks
Free diagnostics are available from the appropriate drive maker's site. Look in there and see what brand of drive it is.

If you don't want to look inside, just post the 5-6 digit service tag number on the case, or on the BIOS/setup screen (F2 at boot when you see the Dell logo).I couldnt run the diag program from samsung because my computer is having issues with the cd burner but I did take the drive out and put it in my computer and it worked fine. I was able to install XP and move files , etc...  But when I went to put it back into my brother computer it wont work again. It gets to copying 1/4 of the files then come up with the error messages again. Im really confused, I didnt change any bios setings or anything and it just wont go past that one point. Any other ideas?XP should be installed on the MACHINE that is expected to run it. Is this a legal XP CD, not installed on anpother machine and free of scratches?

You can download the diagnostics on one machine and run it on the other. Windows does not need to be loaded to run these.

Without knowing the status of the hardware, Windows is irrelevant. Quote

Im using my XP cd, the Dell didnt come with a back up XP cd. And the cd works fine. I just did a fresh install on my computer a week ago with no problems.  And I formated the drive before I reinstalled it back into the dell.

Ill try the diag in a little bit.

And I tried to run Slax, the cd based Linux OS, and it kind of does the same thing. It will show the boot screen and start to load then bam, blank screen and the cd drive spins down and im LEFT with a blank screen.
I still think your hard drive has issues. Try using SeaTools from the SEAGATE site to check it. Quote

I downloaded the samsung diag program and ran the self diag and everything passed. I also tried to run the Seagate tool but it wont load on the dell. I tired multiple disks and none work, it just keeps saying cant not load DOS press any key to retry.

I think I might just get a new drive anyways. If it doesnt solve the problem my brother will just have that much more space for his music and videos.

Thanks for the suggestions and help.

Solve : A bundle of issues?

Answer»

I was recently gifted with an HP due to ISSUES with my old compaq.  When I received the new comp i felt comfortable tearing the old system apart and determined it was nothing more then a bad vid card.

So with the new system I immediately SET a new USER account with admin abilites and a second account for my wife with limited.  I also decided to install my old hard drive knowing the only thing wrong on the old sys was the vid card.

Now the hard drive went in with minimal problems but I can't access anything in the old owner folder.  So I thought I might be able to do something from the actual admin account.  Well the admin account is no longer accessible.  It's not even listed, just gone.  I even tried a sys restore after removing the old hard drive.  Sys won't let me perform the restore.  So the questions are.  How do I get that admin account back, is that related to the restore problems, and once that's fixed how do I access the owner folder on the old hard drive once that's back in.

Thanks in advanceIf you added the old hard drive as a slave to the existing one in the HP just have a READ here:

Solve : Multiple problems installing XP?

Answer»

Ok.  My friend GAVE me their old Pentium 3 and I thought I would reinstall XP on it.  I put in my XP start up disk, to get to dos, and I get the A: prompt.  I can't however seem to get to the C: where I can type format c: and erase the past.  I get a message saying Invalid Drive Specification.

Anyway to get around this I downloaded a 6 disk floppy start up version of XP from Microsoft.  This lets me run my XP cd, but it's time consuming.  Anyway I eventually install XP after some problems but then I get asked to enter my username.  I enter Paul, and then I'm asked for a password for the name I just entered!!!  I've tried going through in safe mode and using the administrator, but I don't have his password either.  Can anyone help me!!!!!??    How can I load a fresh copy of XP onto the computer without all the time consuming hassles?  Your advice would be much appreciated.

Pablo. :-?

First off, you shouldn't get an A:\.  You should get Windoze startup.

Secondly, go into the BIOS (usually hitting the Delete key boot) and make sure your boot process puts the cdrom drive first.

When you get that set up you should be able to boot to the cd and do a clean install of Windows.

Alan <><
Alan, Thanks for your rapid reply.  I've tried setting cd ROM as first thing to load up, but the computer seems to be skipping it and going straight to the hard drive.  As a result I tried setting all three settings to the cd rom.  I get a message now saying DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.  I only get to the A: screen when I put my start-up disk and set the floppy as first or after the cd rom to start up.  When I set the hard drive to start up, it takes me to a page when all I can do is enter a password or do nothing else.  Hope this is info.  Thanks again for your interest and help folks.
Pablo  :-?Insert the XP CD.

Boot to an A: prompt since the other method is giving you a hard time.

At the A: prompt type D: and hit Enter...(or whatever drive your CD is )

At the D: prompt type Setup and hit Enter.

The installation process will now start. Follow the directions and make sure you wipe the C: partition and do a clean install.

You have backed up all the data you need already haven't you ? ?

Because this will erase that drive and there's no turning back. Thanks for the reply.
I've gone to the A: prompt and typed c: d: E: H: and I keep getting the message invalid drive specification.  It seems the the computer wont recognise the cd drives in dos mode.  I've also tried TYPING format C: etc with no progress.

Pablo  :-?Grab a WinME OEM bootdisk from bootdisk.com and try that. It will ask "boot with CDRom support" hit Y and enter to continue.ok.  Got the boot disk.  Thanks for that.  Now I've tried to format the c: by typing format c: and I get the message Format not supported on drive c:, format terminated.    I thought then maybe I could run XP and try formatting through it so I typed Setup while in d drive, my cd rom.  Got the message saying This Program cannot be done in Dos mode.  All I would like to do is erase everything from the past and install XP.  Any ideas?  Help much appreciated. Are we making this a LOT more difficult than it is?

Start the machine with the legal XP CD in the drive. You can format and install from there. You do not need to do this as a separate step. You just have to make sure your machine is set to boot from the CD first in the BIOS. Any Pentium 3 machine can do it.

If you cannot do this you either have a hardware problem or a bad CD.

http://www.theeldergeek.com/xp_home_install_-_graphic.htm :-?

I set the hard drive in the bios as the third to load after floppy and cd.  I put the cd in the machine.  It goes to the Windows XP start up page asking me to type in my password!!  For the name Paul!! Which is me!!  I think I have to erase hard drive manually??So it's skipping the CDRom as the secondary boot device....this can only mean ONE thing.

You need a Genuine XP CD...Or the CD Drive has problems. :-?

Ok My XP is not exactly genuine.  But it works on the pentium 4.  Is there any way I can erase the hard drive and install on the pentium 3?

PabloPabloMcAces......  Is the cd your trying to load BOOTABLE ?
Because if it is , and you have set the boot sequence to cd-rom first boot and then saved the bios changes, put you cd in the cd-rom and then rebooted ......
It will begin loading .....and then you will get the message that all data on the partition wil be lost did you wish to continue ....... answer yes ......... select how you want the drive formatted and away it goes .....
Did you check the link that GX1_Man gave you ?

dl65  And yes, you need a real Windows CD - now and later.

Ok bought a new copy of XP for the 2 computers.  It works fine on this one, but I set the bios to load the CD Rom first on the P3 but it doesnt load.  Instead it skips to the hard drive.  Tried setting all 3 on the bios to CD ROM But that didn't work either.  Any suggestions?  Your help and interest so far has been much appreciated.

Solve : Windows XP Pro.. Move to new Hardware?

Answer»

Hello ... I would like to move my Hard drive from my Dell system that is unstable due to hardware problems into a newer HP/Compaq system without having to rebuild the system which is HIGHLY custom configured. This system is a system at a Garage that I support and the Dell got jam packed with greasy dust, brake dust, etc...Nasty and amazing that it still works but crashes RANDOMLY, and keeps blowing power supplies about once every few weeks, even ones with higher wattage rating. The Cooling fans sucked all the foreign particles into the system and even after blowing it all out with canned air, there is a problem that is on the motherboard that causes it to lock up and go to a black screen. Then after turning it on and off about 4 or 5 times it might decide to boot and run for a few hours.

I tried to place the 40GB Hard Drive from the Dell Optiplex GX270 with a 2.8Ghz P4 w/HT into my available healthy HP DC5000 SFF also running the same 2.8Ghz P4 w/HT CPU, but it wont work. I get the Blue Screen of Death with a Hex Error message about a Kernel Error. When placing the Hard drive back into the Dell it boots up fine, and the hard drive is healthy after scans for problems, but the Dell has some main board issues that are random causing it to lock up, so I would like to migrate to another system if possible.

I am hoping that someone knows of a easy way to drop the Hard Drive into a system, maybe with a software application which aids in the hardware transition and reactivation of MS Windows XP Pro key due to drastic hardware change.

If there is no solution as far as software to aid in the transition from Dell to HP hardware for the Windows XP Pro OS to run properly through the transition, I suppose I will be hunting for a twin Dell Optiplex GX270 on ebay to buy and drop the Hard Drive into for a sure boot without problems.

My past experiences with moving Hard Drives is that sometimes it works with no problems, sometime it breaks the activation of XP and you have to reactivate, and then with drastic MFR hardware changes you get Blue Screens of Death and cant get around them...

Thanks,

DaveIf you have a REAL Windows CD (not a restore disk) Then boot with that and do a repair install. As it is totally different hardware you will definitely be instructed to CALL Microsoft. They may or may not be helpful as the licensing on Windows FOM an OEM supplier (like Dell) is different than on a retail version that you get at, say Best Buy. One interpretation of the EULA is that the operating system is ties to the machine, not to the purchaser. (Good one, Microsoft!)

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/oemeula.htm

So you may get lucky and be able to proceed. If not, and you have already done the repair install and loaded the Compaq stuff and Microsoft says no, then you may be doubly hosed.

I would CONTACT Microsoft first if it were me.

Here is the repair install if you are feeling lucky.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

As that is an Optiplex, chances are good that you got a real Windows CD.  Thanks GX1_Man ... I will give this a try... Never thought of using the repair utility to fix this hardware change...But it should do it..Let us know how it goes. We'll keep the light on.

Solve : Restore Windows XP Pro to New Different Harddrive?

Answer»

I just bought a new 400 GB Seagate HDD.  I have a 80 GB Seagate HDD which contains only Windows XP Pro, many INSTALLED programs, all totalling 6.21 GB of info.  All data is on a differnet HDD.  I want to replace the 80 GB HDD with the 400 GB HDD and copy the Op Sys and installed programs to the 400 GB using Norton Ghost.  I would then partion the new 400 GB HDD into 4 partions with PQ MAGIC.  Will this work?  Will I be able to boot off the new HDD or do I have to reinstall Windows?  I don't know if Windows would allow this because they are different HDD's with different SIZES.  I've used Norton Ghost before to clone and restore a HDD from the orginal backup.  I've never used Norton Ghost to restore a HDD from a different HDD backup, and boot from it.

Steps
1. Using Norton Ghost, create backup of orginal Op Sys/Installed programs from the 80 GB HDD to DVD(s).
2. Replace the 80 GB HDD with 400 GB HDD.  Make sure jumpers are set to master.
3. Boot up with the Norton Ghost CD.  Select option to restore.  Confirm boot.ini is correct.  Confirm 400 GB HDD is set to Active and Primary.
4. Reboot to 400 GB HDD and have everything work.
5. Run disck check on 400 GB HDD.
6. Partion 400 GB HDD into 4 partions, first for Op Sys, then the other 3 for data.

Am I missing something?  Will this work?  Will my programs recognize they are now on a different HDD and not work? You will need to partition the new drive before you load the image file to it removing the need for Partition Magic OR install with the image file to the entire hard drive and then use Partition Magic to split it up. I know Acronis TRUE Image well and it does this with ease. I would assume Ghost is similar.

If it were me, I would not invest in Partition Magic, as this seems an unnecessary expense and a source for error.Yes, your first suggestion would definelty be quicker.  Thanks.

I already bought PQ Magic.  I've heard good things about Acronis.

PQ Magic has been fine, once I figured out how partitions worked.  I got into a bit of trouble before that.  I REALLY like the browser feature.  It enables you to read/copy from a hidden partition.

Boot Magic on the other hand, which can be installed with PQ Magic, is useless.  It caused me a ton of headaches. That is the dangfer of Partition Magic. It does require basic understanding of how it is doing it's work. I prefer the "natural" approach.

I have installed it and nothing seems to be working, I MEAN it can connect to my cell phone but when I go to setup wizard lets say and go 'File Transfer,' it TELLS me "Device 'Motorola Phone' does not support service 'File Transfer.' However, how come my phone have Bluetooth if it doesn't support it?

I found something online that said Verizon crippled Bluetooth: http://www.engadget.com/2004/08/27/verizons-lame-excuse-for-crippling-the-bluetooth-on-the/

But my Motorola isn't that model. Mine is a RazR V3M. Does anyone know what I can do or should I return this Bluetooth device back to CompUSA? Thanks everyone.

R.There are several things you can do with BlueTooth, including file transfer.
It may be your phone just doesn't support file transfer.
It doesn't mean the adapter or phone is faulty.
Try reinstalling the SOFTWARE and drivers and see if that helps, beyond that I'd say your phone just doesn't support it.
Athough it really should, my friend has a V3 and his does . . .
Have you tried anything other than File Transfer?Yes, I have tried other things than file transfer and nothing really is going on. I am going to the Verizon store today to see if they can help.Do you get the same MESSAGE with everything you try?
That your phone doesn't support it?
Have you tried reinstalling software/drivers as I suggested?I went to the Verizon store today, and the women turned on her Bluetooth and she did not detect it on her cell phone either. So maybe it is the cell phone problem? At any rate, the lady told me to go to the technical Verizon center.

Solve : [fast help pls] Can't restore image?

Answer»

Hi there,

I know this isn't the right way of working by asking fask help and blablba.... but I really need fast help. So here is the problem. My windows was so messed up I couldn't even start in safe modus and even chkdsk and windows system disk didn't help. So I formatted windows, reinstalled & reinstalled windows. Now on that new, proper, version of windows I installed drive image xml to restore a previous made backup. But here is the problem, if i want to restore that image I get the message:

Quote

Target partition must be at least the size of the original source drive

What I unsterstand from that message, perhaps i'm wrong, is that my drive isn't as BIG as the drive where the image came from. But that is my problem, that can't be right because that image is made from the exactily same drive!! How can I resolve this problem and get to my really VALUABLE data that is stored on that image?

quick help would be appriciatedI'm working under windows xp professional sp2 btw, wouldn't post a new message for SAYING this but as seen I can't edit my own posted posts anymore  :-/Have you tried restoring it to a different drive if there is one available?
Try restoring in safe mode?
And I know Acronis TrueImage can boot from a CD and do imaging stuff from the CD - can drive image xml do that?
Are you sure the partition is the same size? Quote

No other drive is avaible, but I don't see why there should be another avaible  :-/

Other drive - maybe there's somethign wrong with the drive/maybe the program doesn't like it?
Safe mode - no idea, random suggestion.  It sometimes helps.
Boot from CD - the drive wouldn't be in use then.
I know I couldn't make an image unless I booted from CD because the drive was in use.
Anyway, are you sure that the partition is the same size?
And, can you use drive image xml to explore the image?
I know Acronis can, without restoring it - it sort of mounts it like just another folder.
Then you could get your data back.
Also, where is the image stored?blackberry......

Ok ...lets check a few things.......
1st ....you are using Win XP Pro /SP2 now and the same Win XP Pro/SP2 as before the format ?

2nd... Was the partition size exactly the same size before the format as it is now , after the format ......  ( Not the HD size , but rather the actual partition created on that drive ) ?

3rd....What do you have the backup info stored on now ?

***Sorry about asking things which may have already asked ........ I didn't read any previous posts as I responded directly from a PM ***

Good question. That might be a problem. The hd size is defenaitly the same size, but the partition size should be too. I formatted them both with the windows xp cd in ntfs. How can I make it bigger?

3rd....What do you have the backup info stored on now ?

An externel hd of lacie which is 250 gb but I can NOT restore my image on that one. This is full with important data from clients, as my image is too which I can't restore

Thanks for helping and i realy hope we'll FIND the problem soon.

Solve : When i caps lock?

Answer»

When I use the Caps Lock button on my KEYBOARD, a little popup comes on with, "CAPS LOCK: ON" or "CAPS LOCK: OFF" can someone tell me how to shut this off? Thanks.Computer or motherboard make/model? Is that the keyboard that came with it?

See below.nono it just happened recently. maybe it was when i installed new drivers for BLUETOOTH?

edit - I have uninstalled the bluetooth driver and it was that thanks.Good for you. If something on your system changes and then things don't work that should always be your FIRST suspect.i GOT a question though, why would a driver do this?Well, a strange new driver can just do that. Bluetooth was probably not a big thing for computerw when that ONE was built. It didn't know how to cope with it. Sometimes it just happens.

Solve : WinXP issue with scrolling?

Answer»

This is probably a simple problem, I just can't find the answer. When I pull a web page up or just any page, when I'm wanting to scroll down using the arrow down key, it flips pages??? It doesn't scroll down line by line, its like paging down. How do I fix this???
Its hard to EXPLAIN, I've went into Internet options and checked the smooth scrolling but that isn't it.
Are you using a wireless keyboard? :-?Time to post more info. See below. This problem is on a Dell Inspiron 8200 notebook, WinXP HOME, 512 Ram, Geforce 440 video, nothing special.
It started last week, when while surfing on the internet the computer froze. I got a black screen that said something like.. If this computer has had this error all of a sudden just reboot.
It wasn't a blue screen, just a black screen with alot of code.
When I rebooted the computer it started up like normal, Dell Logo screen, WinXP screen, but afterwards only gave me a mouse cursor and blank black screen.
I rebooted with the WinXP Home CD, went into the Recovery mode, ran a FixMBR and everything worked fine afterwards except the scrolling of the pages.
Thanks for the helpCheck the browser settings...they may have gotten wonked.

You could also try re-installing your touchpad drivers.I reset my browser setting to the default setting. This didn't help.
If I open a page and press the down arrow key, say 5 times, the page will scroll down (flip) 5 times.
If I was to hold down the "down arrow" for a period of time, it would scroll to the bottom of the page and keep flipping until it had satisfied how long I held down the arrow...strange.
Did you try reinstalling the drivers as patio mentioned?

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?Ok, I went through the drivers and installed all that I thought would fix it.
The Scrolling/page flipping problem has went away after flashing the bios....BUT, now after boot up when the WinXP splash screen disappears, my screen size shows its at  1024 x 728 but is on 5 inches by 5 inches.
If I go into properties and tell it to change to 800x600 it finally fills the screen. Then I can go back to 1024 x 728 and the screen stays filled.
If I power down the laptop, the screen goes back to a 5 inch by 5 inch small screen size and I have to go back through the properties settings again. Also, when I click on the HYPERLINKS in an e-mail it doesn't go to Internet Explorer...wow, I get rid of one problem and have two.You go me Leroy.
Now it's time to re-install your video drivers...

What happened to get you to this point ? ?

I see a data backup and a complete re-install of XP in your future...

If you need assistance let us know.I'm going to re-install the video DRIVER, if this doesn't fix my problem I believe the next step is the WinXP enema.
I was hoping to stay away from having to do this. I despise having to reload all of my programs from scratch. A clean install is probably the best thing for me to do.

Solve : How do you remove files that are too long?

Answer»

Hey... This is an interresting and fun problem. I was backing up all my data to an external HD  via copy and paste and got an error message stating the the FILE name or path is too long in length. I troubleshot the file down to a Temporary Internet File that my system picked up along the way with a huge name of random alphanumerics like jkhd7976w8e5f765w7e6f8689wef7567ef6786w ef786weqf.... and so on with no file extension.

I was able to deselect this ONE file and select everything else to get my data backed up, then perform a full rebuild of my system, and reimport my data back.

Question is... The next time I see this, how can I delete this file without having to reformat to delete it? Any good tools anyone knows of. I tried renaming it to a smaller length name, but it would not allow this. I then said, well I am rebuilding my system anyways, so it will definately get dumped in the reformat process, and gave up on trying to find a way around the problem at that point in time.

But there has to be a TOOL out there that one of you know of to delete these stubborn files that wont budge...

BTW: My system is running Windows XP Pro SP2, and IE6.x

Thanks for your help... DaveWhy are you concerned about a file in Temporary Internet Files?  It's supposed to be a temporary file!    Why include Temporary Internet Files in your backup?KillBox solves all...Just remove temp files with CCleaner.
It's the EASIEST solution - there's no need to back them up.
To remove stubborn files that you can't delete, use Killbox as patio suggested. Quote

KillBox solves all...
Any difference between KillBox and Pocket KillBox? Or are they the same program?Looks like the same program to me.I use Window Washer by:Webroot.

It ain't free though.

I really like it. :-?

http://www.webroot.com/consumer/products/windowwasher/?rc=4929&ac=5190515I've heard good things about Window Washer.
However, CCleaner does a good enough job for me.
And it's free I have no money to buy anything else.
How much is Window Washer?  Edit: $29.95 from their website.
And is it much better than CCleaner?I agree that CCleaner does a good job of cleaning Temporary Internet Files.  He could also just RUN Windows Disk Cleanup.

Solve : XP boot-up stuck in a loop?

Answer»

I have a 2nd hand PC running XP that won't start up - on switching the PC on I get the bios info on screen, then about 5 seconds into the windows xp screen the screen blanks out and then the machine reboots. starting in Safe Mode has no effect and starting up from a windows XP install CD gives me the message that I need the restore plus! disk instead of the XP disk - which of course I dont have!!!. Any help appreiciatedTry and boot the machine in safemode by tapping F8 while it is booting...then check Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager and see if any devices are showing a yellow exclamation point. As I mentioned 'starting in Safe Mode has no effect' I get the safe mode options - choose one of them - and then go back into the startup loopYou will need to post more info on that machine and what happened prior to this and someone will be along shortly...Can you be more specific about what other info you need??

I've put the Hard drive in another machine and scanned it for virus's and the drive came out clear.

When the machine starts up from cold I first get the 5 seconds of windows XP screen then the screen goes black for 2 seconds then a click, THEN I see the bios info screen with some info then back into the 5 seconds of windows XP screen etc etc

Why can't I boot up in Safe Mode???!! or from a windows install CD??!! Its driving me mad, it must be a windows problem but why am I locked out of Safe Mode and booting from a CD!!I've managed to get a XP Home disk to boot up the Recovery Console - when I exit this and boot up the safe mode option gives a COMMAND line list of stuff which stops at .....system32\driversMup.sys and then we go back into the boot loop with no interference from me.

Before you do the following...make sure you understand the directions or have someone with a little more knowledge give it a try.

Try this...

Boot from the Windows XP CD and choose the Repair option.  It should go into Windows Setup and eventually ask you which Windows XP installation you'd like to repair.  Select the appropriate Windows Installation.  You should then get a command prompt asking you to type your Adminstrative Password...type it in if you used one or just hit the "Enter" key.  At the next command prompt, type

chkdsk /r

Once it is finished, type

exit

and then hit the "Enter" key.  It will then go into boot...please do not allow it to boot from the CD.

Hope this helped.didn't you mean

chkdsk /r instead of chkdsk \r Ran chkdsk /r and /p/r with no change to the loop in either case.

Has anyone here had a similar problem booting?Have you tried resetting the BIOS to default?yes i've tried resetting the bios to its default - and before anyone 'experts' suggests it YES I HAVE TRIED SWITCHING IT ON AND OFF AGAIN

AAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
crashbangwallop...... Has this machine ever worked correctly since you purchased it ....used ?
Do you have the original disks that came with it ....when new ?
Have you considered just wiping the HD and installing a new version of XP ?

dl65  The PC has worked (its a friends) and I only have my set of software not the originals, which as I have explained wont boot it, apart from a xp home disk which in safe mode TELLS me the disk has XP pro installed, but my xp pro install wont boot the machine up I just get an error saying it needs the 'restore plus!' disk which given the bios has been set to default is perplexing

If I could wipe the disk I wouldn't be wasting my time typing here

I've got the disk in another machine now so hopefully I'll be able to reinstall XP pro once the disk has been wiped, thanks anyway. In the recovery console, apart from using just chkdsk /r or /p, use "fixboot", and "fixmbr", saying "y" for yes at all their "are you sure?" type questions. I had the same problem this morning and fixed it this way. Lemme know if it helps (if you haven't already wiped it clean). Quote

Is this a legit install of XP on there? Is that a legit XP Pro CD you are using? Did the machine in question have an OEM version? What make and model computer is it?

I think the ANSWER is within that last paragraph.

Click on "Repair Install" and read that.I am using win xp home on my desktop.
I think it may have been windows millenium first.

My computer was slow but no viruses or worms.

I got a little reckless and deleted ntldr and some of the files from 2003 in my boot directory.

it would not boot into windows. I copied ntldr, boot.ini and ntdetect.com back on the c drive.

now it says

When I boot from the set up CD I am getting:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\system32\hal.dll
please re-install a copy of the above file

All that repair install is way over my head for now.
Can't I just recopy the files I deleted to the root directory?

but I only deleted files from c:\ not from system32 Quote

If you think that simple instruction is over your head, then you are really going to hate learning how to extract files from a CD.I just fixed it myself by searching this site.
All I had to do was rebuild the Windows boot.ini

Then Windows STARTED, then I restored the files I deleted and replace the new files I created or moved and it is fine.

Have you tried safe modus yet?If I'm understanding this CORRECTLY, the resolution is set too low for anything to fit on screen properly.
Try right clicking on the icon on the taskbar and choosing "size" or "move" and resizing or moving the Control Panel window so you can see it, and reset the resolution from there.
Alternatively, blackberry's suggestion of using Safe Mode would work - Safe Mode uses a set resolution, so you'd be able to change the resolution from there without having windows disappearing off the edge of the screen.
However, I'm not sure if changes made in Safe Mode are PERMANENT or not - I don't know if the resolution you select there will affect the resolution in normal mode.
Hope this helps.Problem solved. I opened in Safe Mode. I was given the option to continue in safe mode or use the system restore feature. I restored the computer to an earlier date and everything is fine now. Thanks so much for your help!!Good one, glad you're sorted.

Solve : My Computer will not boot up.?

Answer»

Hello,
My computer recently stopped working. the computer was shut down and when it was turned back on all i got was a black screen and now i have a black screen with the words enter current password: ,, what would the current password be and how can i get the computer back up and running normally.. any help would be greatly appreciated thank youMuch more information is required. We don't even know if this is a laptop or desktop. It's been AWHILE...

Enter current password is more than likely the password to the account created by windows called "Administrator", which you probably haven't set as anything, so try entering it in blank, otherwise you will have to blank the password file to that user. This sounds like it's asking for a BIOS password.
There is a LIST I know of DEFAULT BIOS passwords, but more info is definitely needed.Iam very sorry for the lack of info i was in a hurry  :-?.. anyhow it is a desktop..gateway-running windows xp.  i have tried typing in ADMIN, USER, it only gives u 3 tries and then it says system halted fatal error  password check failed.. when the power button is pressed to turn the computer on .. it doesnt boot up or anything a black screen with the words enter  current password:  and thats all i can do cant go any farther.. if more info is needed PLEASE LET me know....  thank you for the help so far

Have you tried just hitting Enter at the password prompt ? ?yes nothing works
And the Gateway model number is..........i finally got it working but now when it boots up after the xp screen loads it blinks and then the safe mode screen pops up like i just hit f8 but i dont touch anything, and i can only start the computer in safe mode other wise it will reboot over and over again.. thanks

Solve : PC freeze?

Answer»

Hi, I'm not sure how to search for similar topic so i decided to start a new one.
Well, here is the problem.
Whenever I use my PC it freezes itself, it doesn't have a specific time of when it begins but it just does. Sometimes when watching movie, surfing net or doing absolutely nothing at all. When it freezes, it doesn't just freeze like the old computer, where you can press Alt + Ctrl + Del and restart computer. When mine freezes, it freezes the WHOLE thing. Meaning, the screen basically turns into a picture, nothing moves, mouse freezes, keyboard freezes (the num lock or caps lock key doesn't turn light on), and the motherboard seems like it's still running. I've checked the monitor and made sure it wasn't the problem, my harddrive is still functioning, so it's not the problem. My guess was the display card or the mother board but I'm not sure because this happens whenever I reinstall windows for as far as i could remember. I'm really confused about it, just wondering if anyone else knows what the problem might be. P.S. my CPU was not at max.

I'm using: Win XP, Service PACK 2. INTEL(R), Pentium 4, 2.80GHz, 1.25 GB RAM

I don't know what this means. So it has always done this? Is that a legal XP installation? Home or Pro?

This could be HARDWARE or software. Just because something runs doesn't mean it runs correctly.

I would check the RAM with the free diagnostics at www.memtest86.com, then check the hard drive with the free diagnostics from the appropriate hard drive maker's site.

Obviously the RAM has been upgraded, as no machine comes standard with 1.25 gigs. You need to make sure that it is not causing a conflict.

Remove all RAM and add in cards and reseat.

Post back with your findings.

Solve : Isass.exe - System Error?

Answer»

A friend of mine has a problem with her PC.
Everytime Windows boots into the "Windows is starting up..." screen, an error dialogue box pops up:

Quote

Isass.exe - System Error

Insufficicent system resources exist to complete the API
After click OK or close the dialogue box, the computer restarts. And it will happen again.

It is running Win XP (not sure about any SP), Celeron 1.70 Ghz, 256MB RAM.

I've checked around the internet and there are suggestions about problem with hibernation, bad RAM or corrupted Windows.

My friend was not trying to hibernate the PC prior to the issue.
She's not so computer literate so she cannot TELL what exactly she has done before the error.
She was doing something with Norton Systemwork and after restarted, the error happened.

I've tried to re-sit and replace the RAMs, but still same.

As for corrupted Windows, reinstallation is the last resort.

Any idea?

Thanks.Isass or lsass?
Be careful with this one.Fed is correct...these are 2 different beasts.Sorry about the confusion, just realize that there are both Isass.exe and lsass.exe

Since I don't know what is the font type of Windows dialogue box header, I CREATED 2 folders NAMED Isass and lsass respectively.
And the error message seems to be lsass.exe
Please REFER images attached.

Thanks. There are no attached images...Error attaching file. Can you start in safe mode, if so then do a windows search for Isass.exe.What do I do with the file?
(I'm on my own CPU now, so better ask before I switch)The first thing i would have her do is DLoad and update Ewido...Then turn off system restore...dis-connect from the web and re-boot into safemode and run the Ewido scan...If you find Isass then run Ewido/AVG Online Scan under safe mode + networking.

[edit]You're too fast Patio. LOL![/edit]Her computer don't have Ewido and only has 56K connection....
But I can install Ewido in Safe Mode, right? (Not sure about that :-P)Yes it will install in safemode...if she has a slow connection DLoad it on your machine, copy it to her's and add it to your protection arsenal....

I have a Windows Millenium (Gateway) Upgraded to an XP with upgraded memory. The current USB port is a USB1. I have been told that I have to upgrade to a USB2 port to get my devices to work  :-?

I have tested the devices on a laptop to insure that they are working

What say ye Guru's    [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif] [smiley=dankk2.gif]I'm pretty sure a USB 1.1 port will work fine with USB2 devices, they just won't work as fast as on a USB2 port. Quote

I'm pretty sure a USB 1.1 port will work fine with USB2 devices, they just wn't work as fast as on a USB2 port.
I believe this is true with many, but probably not all USB devices.  My USB 2.0 Flash drive will work on a USB 1.1 port but Windows displays a message saying this device will work faster on a USB 2.0 port.

Brother BOB, do you have ports on both front and back of your computer?  Have you tried all ports?  Do your USB devices specify USB 2.0?  What do the system requirements for them say, anything such as "will work with either USB 1.1 or USB 2.0"?

Soybean,
I have two vacant USB ports on the back and none on the front. I tried all ports and none work with either of two devices I tried   The Kodak camera that I'm using calls for only a USB port  :-? It almost seems like the ports are off! How can I check if they are on? I have gone into the Device manager and it states that the USB ports are working normally   I doubt that is correct
Read and do the below test to confirm if you have USB1.1 or 2.0

http://www.usbman.com/Guides/checking_for_usb_2.htm

If your using XP a lot of issues are resolved with
service pack 2.Do you have it installed?

Edit: Read the post after mine.I was keying in on the laptop
for some reason. Scroll down a little and read what
Soybean wrote.Much Better! An add-on card might be the easiest way to resolve this.  Some of them are quite inexpensive.  For example:  Rosewill PCI to 2+1 USB2.0 Cards Model RC-100 - Retail .  This card provides two USB 2.0 ports on back of your computer.  It also has pins for connecting the wires leading to the front USB ports on your computer.

Here's a card with 4 ports on back:  ENCORE 5 Port USB2.0 PCI Card Model ENLUSB2-5PCI-BR - Retail.

This one cost $2 more but has good reviews:  Rosewill NEC 4+1 Port USB2.0 PCI CARD Model RC-101 - Retail

Of course, you'll need to open your computer to INSTALL such a card; they FIT into a PCI slot.

You might also want one or more USB 2.0 Extension Cables to easily connect to one of those rear ports without having to get access to the back of the computer.Thank you all for the feedback and the GOOD info  [smiley=dankk2.gif]
I did the check in my Device manager and I have a USB 1 [smiley=angry.gif]
I ASSUME that the USB 1 port will not work with my devices from what I'm reading here :-?
I'm going to go ahead and order the better Rosewill NEC 4+1 Port USB2.0 PCI CARD Model RC-101 That Soybean suggested [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]

I'm still at a loss as to WHY the USB port I have shows no sign of connectivity when a device is connected [smiley=undecided.gif]

Thanks Again  [smiley=dankk2.gif] [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif] [smiley=wink.gif] Quote

Sometimes electrical components fail. If ME came with that gateway is is at least 5 years old. Easier to use an add-on card than replace the entire motherboard.OK! GX1 Man, I'm with it!

Solve : Start Up issues with XP?

Answer»

A friend recently GAVE me a dell LAPTOP to fix.

The screen on it is broken, so she has had it hooked up to a CRT montior. It has worked fine until about a week ago. This is what happens now.

The computer boots up normally, goes throught the win XP loading screen, and then goes to a black screen with the mouse pointer. From there an alert window pops up saying Cannot Create value at line 903.

ANYBODY have any ideas?

Thanks!
AJLaptop details please :-?

Which monitor is being used :-?

Can you boot into SafeMode?

ALAN <><  Yes i can, but only until the same thing happens... i'll get to the desktop it says safemode on the wallpaper and then the alert pops up and i can't do anything
What model is it?
Do you know what happened before it started doing this?

Edit: Spam/useless/ignore if you WANT - Magical post #500! Lol.  Sorry, but I had to say it.

Solve : copy old HD to new??

Answer»

Is it possible to completely copy a HARD drive, OS and all from one computer to ANOTHER and make it a second drive on the new computer?  Copy HP hd with win 98se to compaq hd with winxp. It is possible, using a program such as Norton Ghost or Acronis TrueImage.
This will copy everything though, so is not really recommended for moving an entire PC - you'll have DRIVER problems at the very least.
I'm sure someone else can fill you in on the problems you'll face.
Ghost and TrueImage are more for moving between hard disks, not PCs.
To move between PCs, use a backup program to backup everything you want and use the Files and Settings transfer Wizard in XP to copy settings over, unsure if there's an equivalent for 98.Windows 98 needs to be on the primary partition of the first (master) hard drive. XP can be installed afterward to the other drive.

Your method proposed is full of other reasons it won't work as well.skylane42, do you want to create a dual-boot configuration, allowing you to run either Win 98SE or Win XP?  Or, do you just want to move the hard drive over to the other computer for more hard drive space in that computer?  I think this point needs clarification?

I'm also think your message is not clear on whether you really want to physically remove the hard drive from one computer and put it in the other.  You say copy from the old hard drive to make a second hard drive in the new computer.  Doesn't quite make sense, in my opinion.  Exactly what do you mean? The dual boot would work.  That way I could use either OS.  I have reformatted the Compaq from a blanked harddrive.  I bought a set of recovery cds.   The problem is that the programs are not all there.  Stuff LIKE MS word and works do not reinstall.  SO ..I thought that if I could get my old HP recovery disk on the Compaq then the programs would be back and I could use the better computer. You will not be able to reinstall software from one set of recovery CD's onto a totally different machine than they were DESIGNED for.

Solve : Windows XP can't see hard drive?

Does anyone know how to make Windows XP SP1 recognize a SATA Seagate  250gb hard drive? There may be a few registry hacks to enable LBA, but they may be risky and I wouldn't know where to find them.
The easiest way is to install SP2 - is there a reason why you haven't done so already? You need to install the RAID/SATA drivers for that HDD in order for Windows to pick it up...check your documentation. Quote

Is this XP Professional?

Keep watching Calum.   I've already went into the BIOS for the RAID/SATA and enabled them. I went to Seagate's website and they had a partition SETUP that is supposed to allow Windows to recognize the hard drive. It put a 137GB partition, which also went unnoticed. By the way, this is Windows XP Pro SP1. This is what I already had, and I was kind of hoping I could get it to work before PUTTING money into SP2. I'm beginning to have my doubts though. I'll continue to troubleshoot with this... if anyone can think of anything, I would really appreciate it! Thanks guys! There is no money involved in SP2 it is free from the Mothership.

Enabling it in the BIOS is not the same as installing drivers.Look in the bottom right corner of this page for a free download link from Microsoft.

There is no good reason not to have SP2 on an XP machine.   Quote

Will do, even though I am perhaps a little late . . .
I was bored, so I searched the forum for my name and found this thread . . . I really don't have anything better to do.

Agreed . . . unless . . . you don't think . . . aharr, matey! . . . no, he wouldn't . . .
Seriously, there were a few problems with SP2 when it was first released, but I think most of them have been addressed now.
And it is in fact free.  If you're legal, that is.  SP2 is essential to a good running XP machine...Period end.

Solve : DELETE KEY inopperative?

Answer»

HELP. Having had big trouble with McAfee I had to have my HD wiped and M 2002 Proffesional  SP2 was INSTALLED. For a while all was well then my Delete key would not work, so I have to use the Backspace key. I used to be abale to position the cursor at the beginning of a word/line, then press & holding it would gradually delete the text. I have been instructed to make sure the box is unticked for Word Perfect and Navigation Keys but this has not reloved the problem. Please don't direct me to the registry or into the bios, they are no go areas for a silver surfer I'm afraid. I need simple concise help. daveDWelcome aboard Dave...

Have you had a chance to try another keyboard in that machine ? ?
Sometimes it's the obvious things...Thank you for replying so soon Patio, I am using a Logitech cordless keyboard which as I say, when using "Microsoft Works" the Delete key works OK so I do not think it is a faulty key/ keyboard, though I am mystified as to what has caused it all of a sudden. Thanx Rupert.
What is "M 2002 Proffesional"?  You say the Delete key works right in MS Works.  Exactly what applications does it not work in?I'm RUNNING Microsoft Windows XP; Professional; Version 2002; SP2.
The Delete key will not function when typing in WORD but does in both Works & when typing in the email mode. (EG) Positioning the cursor at the beginning or a word or line and holding the Delete key down should delete as long as held down but it does not therefore deletion is only possible using the Backspace key.
RupertBSo, your Delete key works right with all programs except Word, right?  That certainly was not clear from your original post.  In fact, you never even specifically mentioned Word in your first post.

OK soybean, sorry if I my initial thread was not explicit enough but now that is somewahat clearer do you have any suggestions as to what the cause might be, and more important, what the remedy is? Cheers Rupert.I suggest you delete your Normal.dot file, as explained here:  Fixing your Normal.dot .  I can't guarantee that will solve the problem, but it's worth a try.  Note: any preferences that you've changed from the original/default Word settings will be lost, along with any customized toolbars, etc.  If you're concerned about this, change the name of your Normal.dot file instead of deleting it.  Then, when Word creates new one, if that does not solve the problem, you can go back to your previous Normal.dot file by deleting the new one reversing the name change on the old one.Hi soybean, I am most grateful for the time you must have spent responding to this troublesome issue that has come my way. It is obvious that your knowlege of this I.T. stuff far exceeds that under my horizon & things you will undertake without hesitation for me, have a big red Caution sign over them, this one being no exception. If you had been able to assure me that following these instructions would solve my problem I would confidently proceed but if my reply appears to be less than prompt it is because I would like to run it past someone here -maybe the local computer shop owner- before I go about altering settings that are usually out of my reach. With that said however I will certainly post a reply ASAP.

Thanks again Rupert. If however this doesn't work and you can't fix the Delete button, for faster erasing of text, hold down control whilst pressing backspace. This deletes a word at a time.Suit yourself but you should realize that your local computer shop may not have a high level of expertise in this particular issue.  This is a Word issue.  Does the local shop have expertise in Word?  Maybe, but I rather doubt it.  They are more focused on hardware and operating systems.

The procedure regarding the Normal.dot file changes no settings in Windows; it relates only to Word.  There are numerous references to the procedure.  I already cited one; here's another: Replacing "normal.dot" when MSWord Becomes Unstable

As I said, you can rename the file instead of deleting it.  This is really a simple concept, a simple task.  Just rename the file and let Word create a new one.  But, since you seem very uncomfortable with proceeding with it, finding someone who can render direct personal assistance might be best.  Hi soybean, I must emphasise that as a Silver Surfer I am most grateful for any assistance that is offered by readers not least your good self. I have copied your replies and will file them in my "Help" folder for future reference. As for the "Delete Key " problem I sent it to a few different forums and a lady from the USA responded with the simple answer to my problem, I paste it below for the benefit of other readers who may just encounter the same hurdle. Of course I give all credit to Suzanne who, like yourself and many others who contribute to these forums, are a lifeline for guys like me who grew up in the days when even a pocket calculator was science fiction.
                                           "DELETE KEY"
                                              ANSWER
Open Tools | Customize and click on Keyboard... Choose any command at random
(the first one will do) and in the "Press new shortcut key" box, press the
Delete key. You should then see "Currently assigned to: EditClear." If you
*don't* see that, then select All Commands under categories and scroll down
to EditClear. Press the Delete key and click Assign.

Suzanne S. Barnhill  Microsoft MVP (Word)  Words into Type  Fairhope, Alabama USA
Well, rupertB, you did a good job of researching that.  Apparently, the original, default, setting in your Word got lost somehow.

By the way, when you were looking at the Customize Keyboard screen, did you NOTICE where the changes made there are saved?  In Normal.dot.  So, the procedure I suggested would have solved the problem.  By deleting or renaming Normal.dot, Word would have created a new Normal.dot the next time it was launched.  That new Normal.dot file would have contained the standard default settings and your Delete key function would have been restored.

However, I would agree the procedure provided by Suzanne S. Barnhill, Microsoft MVP (Word), is better because it deals directly the specific problem here.  Making Word create a new Normal.dot means any preferences or customizations the user had previously saved in Word would be lost; they would have to be recreated by the user.  Of course, if no changes had previously been made to the default settings, this would not be an issue.Hello again soybean, thanks again for your help. I have a sneeky feeling I caused the problem myself after reading a tip in a local computer mag. on how to create ones own keyboard shortcuts. Suzanne in fact gave the sequence of moves in her reply that enambles one method of achieving this function. The web site of the UK based mag. is:-

Am I right in assuming that this means of creating shortcuts is called making a "Macro"? They certainly [for me] TAKE the tedium out of having to operate the mouse with my right hand. Seeing Iam retired I have plenty of leisure time much of which is spent on my computer (ever seeking to learn something new) which means my right hand is showing signs RSI, hence the quest to learn as many default shortcuts as possible as well as devising as many of my owm as possible. The limitation lies only in the number of key combinations and the memory to recall them.
May I take this opportunity to wish you and the other readers who open this thread a very Merry Christmas & a Happy surfing New Year.
