Solve : Computer starts up but only get a black screen?

Answer»

Hello everyone

When I started my desktop today, I got nothing on my monitor. The tower completely powers up: cooling fan, CPU fan, DVD burner, etc. The monitor stays IDLE with the amber light on. I don't have a clue as to whats going on.

Please help

Thanks in advanceTry another monitor on that computer while contemplating your next post.

A lot more in the way of details would be helpful. What happened prior to this, operating system, details on the computer, etc.

See below.Hello

Thanks for the advice

I just tried using my old monitor and same thing happens

I usually USE my computer to surf the net, check e-mail, and listen to music sometimes

Computer specs:
XP w/SP1
P4 chip
512 DDR RAM
Sony DVDR

A friend says it might be my video card since everything else seems to power upI don't think I would start there, but you can try your friend's video card to test that theory I guess.

The monitor never powers on? Just the amber light?

I would start byt removing and reseating the video card. What are the specifics of the power supply - maker, wattage and age?

Out of curiosity why no SP2 on the machine? Is this XP Professional?Yes, the monitor never powers on, just the idle amber light

I re-seated the video card and it still didnt work

The power supply is made by TigerPro, 300 watts, and its roughly a year old

Its XP Home w/SP1 and my friend said that I didnt need to install SP2 since I already have Norton installed Quote

Your friend is definitely WRONG on this one. I would start by testing another known working power supply.I agree with the fact that it is most likely the power supply, but have also seen where if a video card goes bad or the focus is changed to the INTEGRATED video vs the video card in your video card slot, and your monitor is plugged into the video card, you might get a black screen.

If there is Hard Drive activity like it is booting up, but no screen, and your motherboard has an integrated video VGA jack, I'd try swapping your monitor over to that. Also, try removing the video card and run off of integrated if there is one.... If none of this, then 90% o fthe time, its a power supply bad, lo voltage condition on one of the regulated FEEDS from the power supply or amperage is LOW and with the load of the hardware, the voltage is below operating limits.

Solve : strange MS RAMDISK problem?

Answer»

I have several laptops that I have installed MS RAMDISK on.  They all have had their floppy drive disabled and the RAMDRIVE is set to be the A:\  This works great on 16/20 of the computers, but on the other 4 I am having a problem.  When they boot up, instead of being a 5mb MS RAMDRIVE it simply says local disk A: with a whopping size of 0mb.  Here's the kicker though:  if I plug in a flash memory drive (thumb drive) the A:\ suddeny becomes a 5mb MS RAMDISK again.  All of these computers are the same model and loaded with the same norton GHOST image and have the same ramdrive driver installed.  I'm very confused by this.  Any ideas?

edit to add:

I have uninstalled and reinstalled this thing several TIMES.  Even TOOK one that had a working one and set it next to a non-working one and compared registries.  Also checked the ramdisk.inf to MAKE sure nothing was bugged.  I am running windows 2k on SP4.^^ bump

Solve : freeware version of Microsoft publisher??

Answer»

My friend has office 2003 and RECENTLY did a clean install and thats when he found out he had misplaced one of the disks.... Publisher... I'm a freeware/open source maniack so he called me... I However dont know what it is, how its used, or why. So it not any easy search for me...

it needs to be compadable with the existing .pub FILES and as much identical as possible to the inferior microsoft... in my opinion he only NEEDS something thats compatible with .pub so if he dont LIKE that I'm sure micosoft wouldn't mind takeing him again....

I sudgested Open Office but I dont know if this is even close.... he is makeing invoices, I missed out on secretary school so this is a little over my head....He could use Excel for invoices.  See: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=invoices+with+Excel&btnG=Google+Search.  I have Office 2003 with Publisher and using Publisher for invoices does not make much sense to me.  Publisher has templates for many things but invoice is not one of them.  One of the Excel templates is really a better choice.I did find these, but dont know if they are simalar to publisher

http://www.sunncity.com/superinvoice/

http://www.freewarefiles.com/program_8_78_14010.html

Using excell templates may be to complicated for his likeing... it does mean using excell part of office or is it stand alone?Excel is part of Office, along with Word, Outlook, Publisher, and, for Office Pro, Access (database).  A search in Excel's Help on invoice will yield numerous finds and links to templates to download.  This would be my choice, but I am an Excel user.  If he finds Excel too difficult, software like the ones in your links MIGHT do the job.  Either way, he may need to spend some time learning to use the software.

You mentioned compatibility with .pub files.  Publisher is the only PROGRAM that uses that type of file.

Solve : XP in foreign Language?

Answer»

Okay both my disks where buggerd, and i managed to obtain a version of windows XP, but it is in duetch, is there anyway, once its installed to make it english? like a patch of some sort? No, and we don't help with bootleg software here. Sorry.Just because it's in a different language doesn't automatically make it bootleg.  I live in Germany and I have a computer that I BOUGHT here that was installed with german Windows XP.  As long as the registration key I use is the original AUTHENTIC one, I can install my english XP and use the german registration key.  It's not like he's trying to cheat Micro$oft out of their hard earned money.

But sorry stooge, there's no patch that I know of.No, a different language doesn't make it bootleg, "but I managed to obtain" and his past posts make me think it is. I would further bet the house that it is XP Pro. (I just feel lucky today.)

Congratulations, though, on being a "glass half FULL" guy.

Ah, hehe, as you can see I'm new to the forum and I'm not FAMILIAR with the person in question here.

I just like to give people the benifit of the doubt before I start putting the boot to the arse Welcome Aboard and keep the boot handy...eventually you will develop a use for it.

 Probably SOONER rather than later.

Solve : Loading disks in disk tray sometimes prompts BSOD?

Answer»

I dunno what the deal is, but every TIME I load up a new disk in my disk DRIVE I have to worry about getting a blue screen of death and restarting my pc.
This is what it says:

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Then says something about the cdfs.sys

Ive been trying to look up these two things and for the life of me cant find a simple answer to solve my problem.
I know how to fix things here and there on Windows but dont go telling me to go debug or something crazy   .

Anyone able to help? What version of Windows ? ?OH sorry, I dont know why I didnt say this in the beginning.
Its XP Home Edition.2 things you can try here...
1) Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager...find the CDRom listing; right click it and select Remove. You will GET a warning message...ignore it.
Close everything down and re-boot. XP will automatically re-install the device...Click here and see if this helps.

Solve : Blue Screen on XP  - attempt to execute?

Answer»

Good day all,

I would appreciate some help with a Blue Screen on windows XP Pro SP2 that generates an error "attempt to executenon-executable memory" STOP 0X000000FC with various addresses in brackets afterwards - the latter CHANGES every crash. I have used MSconfig to start in DIAGNOSTIC mode and the problem goes away. Otherwise, it is almost like the computer is on a timer and crashes every 20 minutes or so, even when not being used. Event log shows nothing of import as far as I can tell. I have googled and found that the error relates to Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature of SP2 which I hesitate to turn off. The computer is a new clone, Intel board, Dupli disk IDE drive setup, Pentium D320, 2 Gig RAM. I have run Pest Patrol with no results. Help!!!! Thanks.

Post the complete error message...Complete message is:
an attempt was made to executenon-executable memory
STOP 0x000000FC (0xAE28C95C,0x6512F963,0xAE28C8C8,0x00000000)

Because of the timing of the crashes, I have been wodering about the Dupli disk IDE drive setup though it seems to be working OK.

Thanks for the helpIs this what you mean by Duplidisk? Hardly a glowing review.

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=29330Easy way to troubleshoot it is to uninstall the Duplidisk and see if it still does it.Yes, that is similar to mine but I do not have the SATA version - EIDE one which plugs into PCI. I have disconnected it and problem persists. I have managed to KEEP it running once for 12 hours with the card in but only one drive hooked to it, but it crashed upon reboot. I believe I will try a windows XP Pro repair install to see if it helps though I have never had any success with repair in the past on the many times I tried it. MEANWHILE, thanks for your input.

Solve : !!!!!!!!!!MICROSOFT WORD ?--- PLEASE REPLY!!!!!!!?

HERES THE ISSUE... WE HAVE A YAHOO EMAIL ADDRESS AND OFTEN LIKE TO COPY AND PASTE OUR RECIEVED EMAILS INTO A WORD DOCUMENT. EVERYTIME WE TRY TO DO SO WORD FREEZES, AND IT SAYS THAT WORD HAS ENCOUNTERED AN ERROR AND MUST SHUT DOWN..

NOW WE HAVE DONE THIS COUNTLESS TIMES BEFORE AND SUDDENLY LAST WEEK WE RAN INTO THIS GLITCH... EVERYTHING ELSE ON WORD AND OUR COMPUTER IS WORKING FINE..

IS THERE ANYTHING WE CAN DO TO FIX THIS MATTER? WE TRYED TO REINSTALL WORD BUT THAT JUST GOT MESSY... WE HAVE LITTLE COMPUTER KNOWLEDGE TO START WITH!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE REPLY IF YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS TO THIS MATTER.. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!First, put your Caps Lock key off.  Word is also notorious for leaving temp files on the system that can cause all kinds of problems.

All of these files should be deleted by Word but, they often are not.

The file names all BEGIN with a tilde (~) so search your hard drive for ~*.doc and ~*.dot and delete any you find.you could uninstall word and use "Abi Word" or "Open Office" the ENTIRE office sweet...

both are free, beter, and portable, wich makes it more gooderYou might want to try going to the Word Edit menu drop down and click "paste SPECIAL". Try pasting in formatted text RTF or in unformatted text to see if the problem persists.

Have you installed any new progs from the time this problem started - some may change the defualts?OP seems to have gone AWOL. Quote

Solve : Install crash?

Answer»

Hi. I found my computer to be really unstable, always crashing and slowing down, so I DECIDED to reinstall Windows XP. When after it restarts and you see that blue screen that copies the files, I get another blue screen, except this one says that my comp crashed... during the setup! I managed to fix my unstable Windows with a C:\ disk error check, but 1 problem remains:
Every time I turn on my comp, it asks me which OS I want to boot: Windows XP Home or Windows XP Setup. My keyboard is USB keyboard, so I can't use it during the boot, and the default option id 'XP Setup' which crashes again and again. Removing the XP setup cd doesn't work either. How do I cancel the Setup?

Please help!
Thanks.Did you format the drive and reinstall Windows or just ADD another copy of Windows to the MESS you already had?I suspect the latter...And now the original poster has gone missing......Drive by's always GO up this time of year.

Solve : No Dial tone error on second attempt?

Answer»

I have Xp operating system have primary dos and Xp installed in the extended portion. I installed windows Xp first then I installed the driver from creative labs for the 56K modem, when it dials the phone number and connects to the internet it works ok, but if you lose or diconnect your connection to the internet and it starts to attempt to redial you get the message error no dial tone over and over, but if you shutdown the computer and reboot then dial it will work. I have a 10/100 network card not connected and the modem is in an isa slot the driver for modem is for windows Xp and I already have uninstalled and reinstalled. I reset winsock.  Where do you look to fix this problem?
Have you tried taking out that 10/100 network card?

SOMETIMES a modem and a network card have a
conflict...........I would also uninstall it from device
manager ,or choose 'Do not use this device(disable). That MIGHT work will not be able to hook two computers together could use usb ports though. Maybe uninstalling network card might work, hope you don't need a driver for network card as I don't have one. Quote

I think you have other issues and that old ISA modem may just be shot. How old is that computer that you still have ISA slots anyway? What processor is in there? What operating system? It might be enough to use a <$10 PCI modem.
I have a barebones type with BCM motherboard 533 mhz it has 2 isa 2 pci 1 agp. Uninstalling network card didn't do anything. All thats left to try is open
up box take out net card.  Might just be the software has errors. Card can't be to old as they don't have no windows 3.11 drivers for it. That was the cheapest
card I could find on ebay!             $1 modem card $3 extra ram $1 computer
$1 monitor $45 shipping rivals a $500 machineMight just be the modem. Windows 95 was over 10 years ago. Does it have drivers for that? Are you sure the drivers are correct? Does it test OK in Control Panel?Hardware is ok and only one driver from modem manufacture available, they have other drivers for windows 95 and up if using xp can only use xp driver.Saw an External Fax/Modem at Circuit City yesterday for 12 bucks...
This would RUN off of your serial port. That would be nice I once had a good external modem that worked for dos and windows 3.11 but lightning zapped me.They have an online store...before DSL i always preferred external modems.

Solve : User Accounts- Office progs not available??

Answer»

Hey all

I'm trying for the FIRST time to SET up a GUEST account on my pc. Its up, but programs such as Word wont work, the guest account tries to install it but then I get a host of error messages.

Is there a way to set up a guest account that uses the programs already installed on the *censored* computer? All I want are the basics... word, internet, i dont EVEN want Outlook.

Can I install the same Office installer again on a NEW user account?

its perplexing!
thanks
Try first initializing the programs that will be used by setting the guest user name to local admin. Then logon as that user with admin privileges. Then after the MS Office has been initialized to the profile. You can take away privileges to set it up as guest. Then see if you can still open the MS Office apps.

If you are seeing where MS Office wants to initialize upon start up and fails, this should fix it...

the xp pro is not a clean install and also probably not legit. it wouldnt let me install sp2 regurally because it said it was not clean so i dled a crack. sp2 install went fine and when i went to reboot it started doing this.
i completely forgot how to restart in safe mode can someone tell me?you most likely wont get help until you get a legit windows....Um, why is that exactly? what difference does it makeSafe mode - TAP F8 at startup
As for legit windows, you won't get many updates from MS, and they may stop doing security updates soon as WELL
Besides, illegal windows installations generally have quite a few PROBLEMS, and besides....it's illegal Quote

Um, why is that exactly? what difference does it make

Solve : Need Help ASAP Computer Frozen/Extremely Slow!?

Answer»

I have a Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2.  Computer is AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 2.17GHz, 1.00GB RAM.  My C: Drive has 24.6GB Free and a total space of 111GB.  Until a few days ago my computer was running fine but now for some UNKNOWN reason my computer is HORRIBLY slow at opening ANY file or folder.  Even when I try to click on my start menu to BRING up a list of programs the screen suddenly freezes and takes upto a MINUTE before I can even browse my Start menu programs!  Also when my computer starts up and I open My Computer I see a flashlight icon searching for my drives when normally those drives (C, D etc) all show up instantly now it takes 5 minutes!

I ran SpyBot 4 times already, defragged my C Drive 2 times and ran an antivirus 2 times already.  I even adjusted my computer settings in the System program to run for best performance.  Nothing worked.  My Windows Task Manager says I got 43 processes, my CPU usage is 100%, my Commit Charge is 292M/2461M, My PF USage is 291MB.  Also when I try to go online loading pages takes a lot slower than it used to.  Someone please tell me whats wrong and how can I fix this short of formatting my drive.  How sudden did this happpen?
Was it fine one MOMENT then it just went really slow?
Was it fine one day, then you switched your PC off, when you switched it back on it was like this?
Have you recently installed anything? whether you think it might be the cause or not.

Are you running Virtual PC or any other similar programmes that let you run one operating system on top of another?

I would recommend removing some of that data on your hard drive, back it up to CD/DVD or some other removable media.Well, look at the tasks in Task Manager and identify the one taking the heavy toll on your CPU.Ok I used a Cleaner and ran Hijack this I'll post it in 2 posts.  Please tell me what should be deleted.

Solve : Removing "Control Panel" Deleted Programs??

Answer»

Hi: I have deleted a particular program in XP, but its entry REMAINS in the "Add-Remove Programs" listing in Control Panel and will not let me remove it...I have tried looking everywhere...Is there a way to delete this useless entry? Thanks a lot...

Steve in Kansasthe simpistic advice would be to restart, but you might have done that already.

Just asking, but is there actually a reason that it would need to be deleted? if the ACTUAL program is gone, why would it be important to remove the name?Download Ccleaner
(During install, uncheck the Yahoo Toolbar option).
Open Ccleaner and select the 'Tools Button'.Well, tried CCleaner...Got rid of a lot of crap, but still have the program listing...The reason I want to get rid of it is because from time to time it appears and TRIES to install itself...Get an error message...I cancel out the error message and can go on with WHATEVER program I was trying to start...For example; If I try to open a file directly in Word (.doc) this program will come up and try to install itself...After I clear the error messages my desired program runs as normal...Apparently something is looking for an .msi file...I have searched for *.msi to no avail...CCleaner says it cannot delete an .msi...This is really gettin frustrating! Any more ideas are welcome...

Steve in KansasWhat is this mystery program? You still haven't said. Do you think it could be important?Nope, it's not important and it's not a mystery...An old program from Abacus Software for Flight Simulator..."Civil Air Patrol"...Just won/t go away!  Try this.... Its FREE and works very good at removing software that wont budge safely from Karen's Software Tools

http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptpruner.aspOr Tweak UI for XP from the MS engineering team...Well, when all else failed, I downloaded the program again, installed it, and then UNINSTALLED it...Fixed! Thanks for all of the suggestions...Found a couple of programs that I didn't know existed...

SteveIn the meantime you have added a few great tools to your arsenal ! !

Glad yer fixed up and stop by anytime...

Ok i have a virus on my pc that will not let me start windows. When I turn the computer on it appears to load normally, gets to the loading windows logo screen(with the black background), passes this, the screen then goes black and the computer restarts!? This goes round on a loop and doesnt stop. I know the computer has a virus, not sure what type. What can i do? ThanksRe-boot thew machine and tap F8 repeatedly to enter SafeMode and run all your anti-malware apps from there...this doesnt SEEM to work, just get a long list of WAT looks like command promptsYou have to be patient and let it run...it can take up to a minute to Enter safemode.
Try again.na still not working. Just crashes everytime I try PUT it in safe mode. Left it for half hour waiting for it to load, no joy. Really annoying me now as everything I try wont work, seems to have a bad virus. Is there anything I could try?If you are UNABLE to get into Windows in EITHER mode i'm afraid your only choice is to re-install Windows...

You can hook up that drive as a slave to another working machine to back up all your data first...

Solve : This is strange top me, please help.?

Answer» EVERY time I start my computer up and login I get this program called "Photogallery" trying to install itself. Since it won't go away I have to end the program in applications. When I do that it doesn't come back until I start my computer back up and login again.

I have Windows XP Service pack 2. Please, any help would be appreciated. What happened prior to this? Did you RECENTLY install something, or try to, before this? What virus/spyware protection are you using? Do you know what "photogallery" could refer to?I really don't know what it is. I scanned for viruses with AVG. I found no viruses. Quote

We're getting there........

Patio, call the dentist! And I installed RAM into my computer thats about it.I would try both Spybot and A2Free scans first.  If nothing shows up then jv16PowerTools.
If it's in there, jv16 will find it.  File tool and then Registry finder(drop-down from "tools"
on the main Registry interface window)

If the name of the program appears on the first Registry list, select and choose
Custom Remove>Deep scan>Remove all.

Note: This removes _Registry_ ENTRIES only.
Use the file tool first to remove the files, and then check the locations to make sure they are gone.

Warning!!  jv16PowerTools will allow you to do _anything_ you want to your registry.
_Always_ back up!   _First!_

Solve : new computer system 32 errors?

Answer»

Please excuse me if this is in the wrong section.
I have a compaq SR1930T . Bought it in Aug 06, basic Windows XP edition with Media CENTER 11.
When I purchased this sytem it did not include a recovery disk, had to make my own (now I wonder why it wasn't included).

1. Can someone explain about Media Center and WinTV products. (a) can they work together? (b) are they incompatible? (c) can I run my DirecTV directly thru media center without WinTV?
I know it sounds stupid but after calling HP "no CUSTOMER service" desk 40 times they still couldn't answer my question.
I set Win tv up thru media center as the cd explains but doesn't seem to work after 2 days.

My system crashed after 2 MONTHS of use and I sent it back to the factory to be repaired. (they replaced the harddrive and the HDD was repaired)
I've now had my system back for 1 week and it has crashed again this time with the error System 32\hal.dll

I've been reading different sites to try and resolve the problem but it seem without the Windows XP recovery CD I can't go any further.

I've gone into recovery mode but stops short because of the 32 error.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

maxiI would return it for a full refund or a brand new unit with XP on it...Media Center leaves alot to be desired.
Although it might not be the manufacturers fault a system that new with serious issues is not a good thing.
Be diplomatic in your request as honey attracts more FLIES than vinegar.

Solve : Windows XP pro and the logon screen?

Is it possible to get the windows XP home logon screen instead?Yes.How?#5 Right hand side

thanx PATIO, I found this site before, forgot to bookmark it and never found it again....You're Welcome...It doesnt seem to work, i ran the file, did a restart, but nothing happened.Try #45 Right hand side...STILL nothing, im still GETTING the windows xp pro login screen.Once you have updated to SP2 i believe the logon screen defaults to the Pro screen...why do you miss the other screen so much ? ?I'm not sure what screen exactly you have/want if your using the one you have to type username/password and you want the other screen that shows all the users you need to set it for "fast SWITCHING between users" because this is only allowd with the screen that shows all users... I have xp pro sp2 and I get the same old fancy xp screen, but mine is streemed... go to CONTROL panel/ users/ change the way users log on/off and enable/disable "fast switching between users"

Solve : Windows XP logs on and off, can't get into Windows?

Answer»

My pc logs on and off quickly and gets back to the main windows xp menu (with all the users listed).

I can't get into any part of the system in order to check the registry. I have tried making a boot diskette

I have changed the boot.ini to be rdisk(1) and partition (1) instead of 0, and 2.

I have the two other NT files on the diskette

boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home

The only CD I have from Dell is the REINSTALLATION CD that doesn't boot up or do anything.

Any help would be appreciated.. I am stuck..Did you happen to save a COPY of the bootini before you edited it ? ?I actually copied it from another Pc in my home.. it looked like this:

boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"
/fastdetect /Noexecute=OptInHere is what I did

I copied the boot.ini and 2 NT files onto a diskette. The diskette was FORMATTED to be a system disk.  I read that the broken PC will read off of that. And it does.. BUT it takes me to the a:\ prompt.  I don't have the RECOVERY Console installed, so I can't get to that.  I have tried BOOTING in Safe Mode, that gives me the same results. I have tried booting from the last good configuration, that gave me the same results.

I have found many forums with people having the same problems. EXACTLy.  but their solutions always mention going into the registry... But I can't even get to it - it order to change it.  It is possible I don't know the correct commands.

You can run the Recovery Console from your XP CD...

Here Ya Go

I only have the "Reinstallation CD" for Windows Xp - does that have Recovery Console on it?

F10 doesn't do anything when I press it with this CD in. I hear the drive spinning, but nothing is running off of it while booting.  once it stops, f10 doesn't do anything

is it possible it is the correct cd and I am just not using it to boot from?

thanks for your quick response..

Solve : SOLVED: Not Being Able To Log In?

Answer»

Normally when I turn on my computer, it loads and logs in automatically and doesn't need to show the login screen. But today when I turn it on, it goes to the login screen. So I click my name which is Compaq_Owner, and it logs me in. I see a quick flash of my background of my desktop with no icons, and then it goes back to the login screen and logs me out. It says "Saving Personal Settings" and "Logging Out" . Then I am back at the log in screen. I do not get any errors, just this. I have tried Safe Mode and making a different account I can log into, but it doesn't work. I did a SYSTEM restore to Monday, 2 days before it started this. I then log in and it does the same thing all over again. I have also restarted and tried to log in, but that doesn't work either. Can anyone help?Welcome to the forums.

Please read this first..

ThanksImportant info needed, like Operating System, Service Pack, what happened prior to this, other issues, etc.Operating System - WINDOWS XP Home
Version - 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2608
Type - x86 Based PC
Phys Memory - 512 MB
Processor - X86 Family 15 Model 47 Stepping 2 Authentic AMD 1790 Mhz

Just got Firefox 2 the day before this started. It worked fine until yesterday when this started. I never got any error messages when I try to log on, just logs me on, flashes the background, then goes back to the login page after logging me out.

Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration?Yes I have, and it does not work.In Safe Mode can you run msconfig>startup and disable any modules which are obviously not required such as Firefox, Anti-virus, Firewall etc.  Then reboot.

If your boot is successful then run msconfig again and enable the ones you disabled one at a time, rebooting after each one.  Bit time-consuming but this procedure might highlight a problem.  MAKE notes of what you disable for later reference.

As a last gasp you might have to do a repair install of XP, do you have a genuine full XP cd (not an update or recovery cd) and is your backup up-to-date :-?My PC is doing the same thing.  I want to dispose of the computer because it is old but want to delete all os and files.  But I cannot get to the place to reformat the drive.  Can you please help. chris Welcome Aboard. It's probably best to start a new thread to fix your dilemna...I don't have a Windows XP CD because it comes installed on my computer by default. I FIXED it though.

Here is what I did:

-I backed up my important files to my website
-I did a complete System Recovery (Restores computer to factory defaults)
-I downloaded my files back to my computer

Thankfully, most of my software was saved, but some doesn't work (but I was going to uninstall it anyway, so no loss)

Thanks everyone

Solve : Can the content of a deleted folder be restored??

Answer»

Hi,

I've mistakenly deleted my music files.

Is it possible to restore them?

& no they were to big to put in the recycle bin.

Please help.

Thanx in advance.

George What did system restore do for you?

http://www.theeldergeek.com/system_restore.htmI don't think system restore will return deleted files.

Try Undelete:

http://www.undelete.com/undelete/undelete.asp

It'll COST you thoughSystem Restore wont undelete deleted files and wont help your problem,

1. Do not Access the hard drive, I'm guessing you alrerady have so the chance of using a program such as "recover my files" or 'easyrecovery proffessional" to recover the files wont be all that successful.

Note that both these programs will COME close to fully restoring a hard drive's data even after a full format but to be successful the you need to not try and access the drive

if i were you id give one of these programs a go (you will have to pay for it tho) but dont expect a full recovery, but you may get most of your music back, you may get only a small amount back. but that will be determined by how many times windows has access and moved data on the drive

You could also try the undelete files feature in tuneup Utilities, however i would reccomend the firts 2 mentioned programs>PC Inspector File Recovery< is free.As long as the amount of free space on your disk is large, there is a good chance of recovering the data. Windows only rewrites over the data if there is no "UNUSED" free space remaining. But then still, complete recovery cannot be guaranteed.

Undelete TRIAL version can scan for deleted files, so perhaps you could see if they are "available"? But without paying you cannot recover more than a few kb.

Thanks Rob for that link; I didn't know there was a free utility available But never having used it I cannot give any advice on it. (And I'm a bit confused as to why they have called file extensions disk formats)

I suggest you try Rob's program first. If there's no joy, try Undelete.Since I have Acronis backup anyway,I gave it a try.

I deleted 250MB of files and folders and then did system
restore to two days earlier and everything is back.

Go Figure.

Why even have restore to an earlier time if it don't WORK?

Solve : Chkdsk problems?

Answer»

I recently partitioned a new linux to dual boot Suse and Windows XP Media Center Edition.

Apparently it detects something wrong and schedules a chkdsk. However, when I perform the scan, it starts writing the same line over and over again infintely.

EDIT: It prints this line ENDLESSLY....

Code: [Select]Inserting an index entry into $0 of file 25.
Also, I notice errors when back in XP. Random things like at random times there are periods of slowness (It used to never do this, I have no spyware at all and I have defragged with top of the line stuff). When I download from a normal browser download manager, it tells me that Access is denied? So I have to use DAP to download stuff. This also happens when saving documents, access denied.

I used partition magic to install the linux. MAYBE it has something to do with a partition being hidden or something. But it can't be access denied cus my hard DRIVE is in use.

I assume all of these errors have something to do with the chkdsk. I also used a WINXP cd to run a chkdsk and it freezes  like a quarter of the way through (about the same where the normal Chkdsk starts printing something infinitely)

Checking google....

Any help appreciated

EDIT::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Well, I'd FIGURE that it's best to post my solution. I found my self to be very impatient. I just let the chkdsk run and it finished....I have no errors of any sort anymore. Thanks anyways.

Restore partitions are a poor substitute for a real XP CD. You cannot do a repair install, for starters. Ditto for a restore CD. :-/After re-reading this thread i NOTICED the machine is still under warranty...i'd back up what i needed and make use of it.That was suggested but the OP didn't want to do it - too busy. And there you have it... I tried before. They refused to respond to any emails i sent and whenever i call them, no matter what time of day it is, i get re-directed to a india call center who informs me that i need to wait till their singapore office is available as they cannot HELP with singapore problems.

How the *censored* is their office not available at 3 pm?

YEAH, i've heard from other sources that Toshiba support is LACKING.  If you know someone who has a Windows XP CD, you might be able to use it to do a repair installation.  You will need your Microsoft product key, of course (it should be printed on a label affixed to the COMPUTER).

Solve : unable to unintall antivirus softwares?

Answer»

hi,

I am a fresher, kindly guide me how to get RID of antivirus softwares
wrongly installed and refusing to go away. Both are of Norton and one
is password protect.

Regards,

Vish..
Special uninstall instructions are available for Norton removal on the Symantec  web page. Read it carefully.I agree with GOING to www.symantec.com to get info regarding the password protected Norton, but also MAKE sure that you are logged in as the administrator of the system. If you only log on with no password, or only 1 account in which there are no other profiles (users) to select from or enter, then you are already logged in as administrator..

Good Luck... Patio has got a CANNED response for getting rid of the Norton virus.

Calling Patio! Is that the one where you have to remove your hard drive, put it onto a sacrificial fire and dance around it while screaming for the evilness to begone?Sorry i was finishing off the Turkey ! !

DLoad and run the tool below...

Norton Removal Tool

1) Use Add Remove Programs first and un-install Norton...
2) From Windows Explorer search for any folders named Norton and Symantec and delete them...
3) DLoad and install ERUNT and have it make a backup of your registry...
4) Open regedit and type Norton in the search bar. Delete all entries it finds. F3 takes you to the next  instance of Norton. Continue til you have reached the end of the registry...
5) Repeat the above process using Symantec instead in the search field. Delete any Symantec keys it finds...
6) Now run the Norton Removal tool you DLoaded...
7) Empty the recycle bin...
Go to My Computer and right clik the C: drive and select Properties and run disk cleanup...
9) Re-boot and run disk DEFRAG....

There you're done !

See how easy Symantec makes it for you to dump their product ? ?

Solve : COMPUTER RESTARTS AUTOMATICALLY?

Answer»

Hi! I am having this major problem and i would appreciate any help given. Recently my computer had some problem and wouldnt start up, it said "ERROR loading operating system" on the start screen and wouldnt go any further, i FORMATED it and that solved that one problem. However ever since i have formatted it the computer has been undergoing numerous problems, two of them are that whenever im on the internet, running 3D apps such as Halo, media player it restarts. On the internet it restarts after sometime but when playing halo or windows media player it takes mere seconds for it to restart. I SUSPECT my graphic card to be the source of the problem but the thing is that it restarts even when i leave it idle for a long time. I have tried updating my driver for the graphic card but the problem is that since my graphic card (ATI RADEON 9250 128MB) is old the driver (Catalyst 6.11) on the ati website wont support it. Secondly whenever i install some applications i get the error "Error continuing setup. Error may be due to Low memory or corrupt cabinet FILE". I bypass the problem by installing the application in safe mode but it works for some only, for example i had to install halo in safe mode, but i couldnt install .NET framework in or out of safe mode because i get the same error.
My pc is custom made so i think it also could be that my motherboard is not compatible with my graphic card, the Motherboard is Asus P4S800 and the Graphich card is ATI RADEON 9250.
Please help, many of you might know how horrible it is to have a comp and not be able to use it for games or movies!!! Help please! My system specs are lsited below
Operating System : Windows XP PROFESSIONAL SP2
BIOS: Award modular BIOS v6.0
Processor: Inter(R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 512 MB Ram
Page File: 326MB used, 923MB available
Directx: Directx 9.0cMost common problems for causing shutdowns are the following in no particular order:

Heat.
Open a side of the case and use a small desk fan pointed at the CPU/Vid card to test this.

Faulty RAM
DLoad and run MemTest from a bootable floppy. Let it run a few hours. Any errors is no good.

PSU.
The best way to determine if it's the PSU is to swap it out with a new one. Don't buy a cheapo they are nothing but headaches.

Vid Card.
Unfortunately again the best way to test this is by swapping in a known good card to see if yours is failing.

Best of Luck to you and keep us posted.sorry for the late reply, the comps causing a lot of probs, i came to two conclusions and i stablized my comp a bit, the first thing is only ati driver version 6.5 tackles this problem more effectively than others, it desnot solve it but stablizes it enuf for normal functionality. Secondly now that its stablized i messed around with it a bit to isolate the bigger problem and i found that in the BSOD it says Thread Stuck in Device Driver which means that the driver for the video card is the source due to this report however once the comp restarted to my load up screen and there it said that the CPU hung for an improper speed, my PC is overclocked, so i guess it might also be a heating issue. I checked the temps and the PC temp at idle is 35C while playing games like NFSMW is 46C, on idle the PC fan runs at 2445...so any ideas? what do u guys conclude from all of this? The ram isnt causing problems.

Overclocking is the best and quickest method to be in the market for a new machine...

I'd replace the vid card and reset your CPU to the default settings.

After all if OC'ing is designed to give more performance but the machine won't run what have you actually gained ? ?Overclocking would have been a key bit of information to have included in the first post. I wonder why that was neglected? Not relevant?

If you can't get it to run at the recommended specs, that is a different issue. With this.....all bets are off.  true but the thing is that everything worked fine until i formatted it, i had this problem before but somehow i fixed it and it worked, i played halo, C & C generals, Mst wanted, underground 2, everything, movies would run with no problems but after i formatted it nothing seems to work, thats why i neglected to post hat it was overclocked because i dont think its really causing a prob since they programs ran before and the cpu temp is pretty acceptable (44C). i am gonna take it to the shop i had it built in this weekend, any suggestions to what i might have tweaked there? and any suggestions that might help me not make the trip? Thanks for the quick replies, really appreciate itDon't overclock anything and see if it functions.well i know the graphic card isnt overclocked, only the processor is, i was thinking along the lines that i might get another fan installed or something else...i dont intend to get any hardware changes that day until and unless its really necessary because im gonna get a new comp soon anyway but i have to get this one up and running but what would u advise me to get the techs look into so that the next time i format it this prob wont happen again. thanks again for the help! Quote

Don't overclock anything and see if it functions.

If it does then you can fiddle withwhatever you want. If it doesn't you have other issues. (Haven't I already said this?)

On some PC's, you can get this by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting "rotation" or something like that from a context menu. However, unless you happen to use a nVidia GeForce 6600 video card, I can't give you step-by-step instructions. However, it should be in the menu I talked about. (WHY this is a feature is beyond me...)I believe this works the same way with many nVidia cards.  The key factor is probably the specific driver installed, not the specific card.  We could have different nVidia cards but have the same driver. Solve : Quirky shutdown ??

Answer»

Hi guys, just a little question
When i close down windows xp on my computer it closes down normaly, then says under the windows logo " it is now safe to shut windows down" so i have the press the on/off switch manualy on the machine  :-?
Is there a setting wich will fix this ? not so much a problem but a little anoying. looked in power options but no joy... Thanks for any help    pooly.... If you click the START button and then choose SHUTDOWN ..... do you not get a shut down windows BOX ? That box should be set to shut down ....then click ok and the machine should shut down for you ...it's not necessaary to use the off/on switch.

dl65  This is why its quirky, it shuts down like usual then when closed the windows logo on a black page reapears  with small white letters underneath sayin "it is now safe to turn off your computer.....

start
turn off computer
turn off

Then when shutdown is done.... black page with windows logo and above msg ?

Strange  :-?Do you get this box coming up ?

dl65  No, just the usual one.. little one in middle ov screen with     "STANDBY turn off restart"  Do you think its a settin ?It sounds like a setting , can you post a screen shot of what you get ?

dl65  I cant because it closes down all the way. And i have no camara here 2day for a photo.. Strange realy as just as the power shud go off the balack screen with logo and small writing apears with msg....quirky i know.. Thanks for your time on this... muchos grat !! How about clicking start / control panel /user account    then select "change the way users log on or off"    where are the check marks ?

dl65
You dont need a camera to TAKE a screen shot , look on your keyboard there should be a key called print screen ......... so what you do is go whereever you want to take a screen shot of ......... click the print screen key ..... ( nothing will appear to happen )  then click start / All programs /accessories / paint .......  when paint opens ...click edit ...then paste .... and the image will appear ..... now click file and then save as ...... give it a name , and save it on your desktop.........  then go back to your post in CH ........... type your text and then down where it say attach ...click browse ...... then go to the desktop and attach the image you just saves there and then click post and it should be there for us to see .

dl65  Tried uncheckin the boxes you said but still the same screan apeared.... The final screen with the msg wont take a sreenshot as it is in closedown....[/img]
Like i said it does close down but the black page with msg pos up... Quote

Does it read other media, like DVD games, audio CDs, data DVD/CDs?XP. I have always used Cineplayer and WinDVD, this just started happening out of the blue. It plays all cds and data cds, just select (very few) dvds. I don't get any error messages, just no media when I try to open players or "please INSERT disc" when I try to access the DRIVE. No other problems, it used to work flawlessly. How OLD is the drive? Has it had a rough life?

How about trying that drive in another computer and a different drive in this one? Let's see where the problem really is.

Solve : Cannot Download/Save Files - WinXP,SP2, OE6?

Answer»

I have been running Windows XP Home SP1, Outlook Express 6, IE6, for several years. I tried upgrading to SP2, some months ago, and had the problems listed below.  Uninstalled SP2 (back to SP1), and all is OK. I did this a couple times.  I attribute the problems below to something in the SP2 update, am I wrong??
1. I CANNOT download a program from the internet, such as a software program.  I get the dialog box ASKING for RUN, SAVE,..., select SAVE, the Downloading Progress dialog box comes up and shows  the download progress; upon completion, that' it, the file never shows up where I said to save it. ??
2.  I  CANNOT open or save attachments (jpg, doc, xls, or any type) from an Outlook Express Email.  Select to OPEN the attached file, and nothing happens. Select Save Attachments, and I get a SAVE ATTACHMENTS ERROR message:
"There was a error saving one or more of the attachments. Please check your disk free SPACE and try agin"  There is 103GB of free disk space.  Outlook Express is set to:  "Allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially contain a virus"
I have been all over the forums reading problem solutions, nothing has solved the problems. ??
There must be some setting or table in SP2 that is preventing file saving/download.  This has been an ONGOING problem, and the only reason to go to SP2, in this case is to update to IE7.
Thanks for your help,
Don
[email protected]
I really wouldn't consider just IE7 as a reason for installing SP2 but there are plenty of reasons besides IE7 to install SP2.  You do not have SP2 installed now, right?

Do you use any adware/spyware removal tools?  What firewall are you using?  Do you periodically run Disk  Cleanup?  Or, use a third-party cleanup tool such as CCleaner?

Have you tried another browser, such as Firefox? ruckmn  ......  Is this the way your outlook express is set under the security Tab ?

dl65   ruckmn........  Does your XP sp1 ...... pass the WGA test ?

You really do require SP2 as it contains many fixes and security updates....

dl65  SP2 is required before we can resolve this, I am afraid. Do you have a real Windows CD to reinstall if neededHi all,
Let me try to respond, and perhaps provide more info.
soybean,
Yes, SP2 is important, and IE7 is not the only reason; I have been running SP2 on MY computer for years, this update to SP2 is on my wives computer.  I use Adaware SE, and keep the computer clean, including diskcheck, defrag,....
dl65,
Yes, those are the setting in OE security.  Not sure what WGA test is ??
GX1_man,
Yes, SP2 is installed, and YES, I have the Windows XP Home CD.

Let me reiterate, that if I uninstall SP2, as I have done in the past, all those functions work, with no changes to security.
Now, I use PC-cillin 2006 Firewall, real time scanning, and have turned off POP3 Email incoming scan (hopefully temporarily).
Windows Firewall is OFF.

I think I have her computer configured like mine (this one), only I have XP Pro.

Don

Have you tested this with your firewall disabled ? ?patio,
Thanks, YES, I knew I had done that in the past, but just disabled the Firewall, and disabled the Anti Spam Filter in PC-cillin.  PC-cillin gets all excited about not having a Firewall active.
Still same as DESCRIBED above.

DonWhat is your default download directory set to ? ?
How much free space do you have on your HDD's ? ?patio,  Thanks
Default download directory  When downloading, the download dialog box asks: RUN, SAVE....  If SAVE is selected, you then specify the download directory, same as with SAVE ATTACHMENTS in Outlook Express.
Hard drive has 103GB free space.

I am about ready to start eliminating "Processes' from Windows Task Manager (Ctrl,Alt,Delete) one at a time.  Most of (not all) those processes are not needed for the system to run, and maybe I'll get lucky, that one of those processes is not functioning properly or id out of date.

DonI would be careful about shutting down processes as you might render that machine un-bootable.

Have you considered a repair install of XP?

If done properly it will repair XP and retain all your data...

Repair Installpatio,
WOW, THANKS for the site, I have not seen that one before.  Yes, I have/had considered a reinstall (repair) install, but was considering that somewhat of a last resort.  I will need to study the contents of that Repair Site.
I need to be gone now for a few hours, so will not get to that step until later today.
If anything else comes to your mind, PLEASE continue to share

Later,
DonThe only thing i would add to his excellent advice would be to print out a copy of the directions first and read them to become familiar before proceeding.

And be patient and take your time...patio,
Yes, I will print out the instructions so as to have them in front if me.

Gone......

DonYou might want to remove your e-mail addy from your sig so the spambots don't bury your inbox with *censored* and phony Rolex offers...Patio,
Ya, did remove Email address from Sig.

After reading and studying the Repair Install instructions, I concluded that it was too complex and involved too many possibilities for failure for me, such as having to make the boot device the CD in the Bios,..........

So I took the step I have done in the past and Uninstalled SP2 (reverts back to SP1), installed all the updates as Windows auto update prompted me to do, and now all the above failures work again (my wife is happy).  I can Open and Save Outlook Express attachments, and download and save files (programs) from the internet.  I think I need a MS guru to sit down with the computer, and determine why the simple update to SP2 from SP1, renders those functions not operational.

I really don't want to give up on this, so if there are any, any, possible fixes, patches, or similar problems, PLEASE let me know.

patio, perhaps you have some other tricks up your sleeve.

Thanks to all who responded, and as of now, like I said, my wife is happy (that's good) with the computer running properly, albeit with SP1.

Don

One possibility...when you install SP2 where is it coming from ? ?

You can order a fresh CD from the Mothership for a small shipping fee...patio,
The SP2 update came directly from the MS Update site.  After it checks a valid Windows, and that SP2 is not already installed, etc. it then allows the download.  I would expect the download site to be as update as a CD ??

DonI was thinking more along the lines of a corrupted download...

I'll find the ordering link for you.

Solve : Change OS boot selection.?

Answer»

Dual boot Win.98se and Win XP Home.  FAT32 throughout.

The default STARTUP OS is XP - can this be changed to Win 98 :-?

Do programs have to be installed in both OS's or can programs be started successfully across partitions/OS's :-?

Thanks..Do you have windows 98SE installed on the computer.

I havent figure out how to install an Old OS on top of a new OS. It only works the otherway around. When you install the new OS you slect clean install.

If you have windows 98SE and XP installed on the computer allready.
RIGHT click my computer->Properties->Advanced(Startup and Recovery)->Settings=> There you can select your default OS and how long to show it before it will automatically selectone.Win98 - thanks for response.

Yes, I use Win.98se and Win.XP, both installed, but I installed Win.98 first.

There's a heap of info on the WWW about how to install an older OS over XP.  As you will know the older OS will overwrite the XP Master Boot Record which has to be recreated by doing a Repair Install or by using FIXMBR from the the Recovery Console.  But beware, if you want to use the Recovery Console there is the chance that you will get into an endless loop being asked to enter your password, EVEN if no password exists, when setting up the RC.  There is a Registry Edit to sort this out which should be applied before attempting to start the RC.

Here's a little from the WWW.

I have never retro installed an OS and my best advice is to backup, backup and backup again before trying it.

Anyone care to comment on my query about installing programs please :-?You would have to install the programs on both operating systems to properly place info in the registry, needed files in the Windows FOLDER, etc.

There is a definitive answer for you.

No doubt in your reading you found that the BEST way to do this is to load the oldest version of Windows first and keep the different operating systems on different partitions (or drives).

There is another definitive answer. Thanks GX1.  Two definitives in one response, the generosity of CH genii has to be SEEN to be believed And in the wee hours of the morning.  We all know you only sleep 1 1/2 hours a day....

You would have to install the programs on both operating systems to properly place info in the registry, needed files in the Windows folder, etc.

Is it possible to find out which programs create registry entries and/or create files :-?  Asking because want to create a "common programs" folder which can be used across both OS's.  Already have candidates in Foxit Reader and user written apps which run successfully from one program file loaded from either OS.

Thanks
Trial and error unfortunately is the only way to find out which apps will run installed on only one OS...

JFK:

To determine if it is a damaged file system that we can try to fix, you have to take a closer look at the stop error on the Blue SCREEN of Death (BSOD).  It will look something like this:

STOP 0x000000ED (0xaaaaaaaa,0xbbbbbbbb,0xcccccccc,0xdddddddd) UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Now the second 0x number inside the parentheses (the one represented by 0xbbbbbbbb) is that number 0xC0000032?

this is the closest I have seen to my problem.  All the same and yes my second is 0X0000032.  Does that make the recovery and diffrent?  I'm a moron when it SOMES to this so please use the simplest terms possible.  A COMPLETE walkthrough would also be a great help.

Notes:  Purchased all from NewEgg  .  The system has been RUNNING flawlessly for approximately 9 months until two weeks ago.  I was having a great game on BF2 and then all of the sudden my computer rebooted with no warning.  Once it rebooted Windows became very unstable and would generate errors and, at times, then reboot.  After discussing with Microsoft support, I did a clean install.  The system runs through the BIOS, formats the HD and then loads WIN up to 52% and then I get hundreds of errors (mostly .dll and some .exe).  I threw some money at a new hard drive just in case and it is brand new.  I've tried another XP SP2 disc and get the same result.  I've restored BIOS settings to default.  Microsoft believes that I had a bad OS disc.  They are sending out a new disc, but the disc is not here, but when it is I'll work through it with them.  I can't believe it's the OS disc.  They believe that the hardware drivers are not loading.  That may be the case, but I don't believe it's from a bad disc.  There is something else going on here.  I'll be curious to think what you guys believe.

My question is:  What is the problem and what could've caused  the problem?

My thoughts at this point:  A stick of RAM went bad perhaps(haven't run memtest86 as I don't have a bootable disc).  My motherboard drivers and/or BIOS went south.  Guesses on my part through bits and pieces I've learned.

Thanks for any support any one can provide. You only need a floppy to run memtest, they are very cheap.Understood.

I didn't post that I have a DVD ROM drive and a DVD R drive and did not install a floppy.  That test would probably rule out a memory error I'm sure.I believe memtest will let you make a bootable CD from an ISO. If you have a machine with Nero, etc. you can burn with try this. That is definitely the first place to start, and it's free.    Test each RAM stick for 30+ minutes, then all together.

A damaged motherboard is possible. A bad CD would ceretainly be another possibility, but I am assuming you have used it before without difficulty. The fact that you tried another XP disc with the same results weakens that possibility.

So get back to us with the memtest report and if all is OK, we'll all be waiting for the report after the CD is received.  Will do and thanks. All computers should have a floppy drive, they are very cheap.Whew, I was able to download the Nero trial version and burn a bootable CD.  One stick is bad and the other has no errors after a few passes.  I've RMA'd them with Corsair.

Thanks a lot for your help and your site.  You guys ROCK!We  do indeed rock. Thanks for posting back.  See that Lifetime warranty is worth the extra cabbage after all...

Glad to hear you got it solved. And, again, thank you for the sincere help!

Solve : Unable to download from internet?

Answer»

Hello Everyone.
I am kind of HOPING someone might be able to help me with a little problem I have.  I've had a few quirky things happening on my vaio 315E LAPTOP but have sorted most of them out.  Namely MS Firewall has now been switched off and the free version of Zone Alarm installed.
Up until yesterday I have been able to download files from the internet just fine (ftp unaffected).  Now when I try to download an application from the internet I'm only getting about 60k of the file and the download stops.  When you try and run the application it says that is not a valid win32 application (which is correct because it has not downloaded the entire file).

Can anyone please tell me how to resolve this problem with downloading?

Windows XP home edition
IE 6
Firefox 1.5

Try turning off Zone Alarm temporarily...Thank you for your help but I think I now know what has happened...... I run a Netgear adsl router and have been subscribed to parental control by Trend Microsystems through it.  I have turned this off and FOUND my downloads are working fine.  I now have an issue with Trend as I've paid for a years subscription and now can't use it. Not sure why this has happened as I have not upgraded anything on the router.

Thank you again for your help.
Regards
kate.
p.s. no DOUBT I will be back with more questions later. lol :-)Do you have some kind of control panel where you can change settings for that parental control SOFTWARE?  Surely, there is some way to set user preferences in it.Yes it is configurable however I took any restrictions off but left the parental control active and couldn't download.  Took the parental control off and now I can download.
Thanks Tho Cheers Kate
Glad to hear you got it solved...stop by anytime. Thanks everyone.... sometimes just talking or typing is this case gives you a better idea how to approach a problem.  Many Thanks will be back for the next problem but hopefully not too soon.

Regards
Kate

Solve : Files moved to previous folder?

Answer»

Let's see if I can so this.
I have Windows XP on a Toshiba Satellite M45.

This has occurred a few times over the last two months. I had a batch of MP3 files that I burned to a CD, then re-ripped. The files appeared in the "Unknown Artist" in my My Music folder. I re-named and mvoed all of the files into another folder I use for MP3s, also in the My Music folder. In other WORDS, I moved the files from the computer's automatic sorting into my own customized sorting.

HOWEVER, for no apparent reasons, the music files have repeatedly re-appeared in the Unknown Artist folder, with the original files names, as if I never moved them. Sometimes the number of subfolders (the ones that have Unknown Album, date, and time) are different. Furthermore, all the new folders I created when I was doing my custom sorting disappear as if I had never created them.

I've tried just moving the files back again, which ends up erasing my iTunes data. The files returned to the Unknown Artist. I tried re-naming and sorting the files. This worked for a time, but, again, the files went back to their original state. Since it's a bit time-consuming to keep moving the files and restoring my iTunes, I was hoping to find out if there's any paticular action on my part that triggers this to happen.

I wish I could provide more details, but I don't always notice immediately that the files have changed. Since I haven't documented these occurences (the first time, the changed happened several tiems in a row, and the second time happened unexpectedly more thana month later), I can't provide many details, and I apologize.

However, I have noticed that it tends to happened after I run CCLEANER--although I've run the program many times without it happening, the times it has happened seem to follow almost immediately after running the cleaning and fixing issues on CCleaner.
Thank you very much for helping me.Do these music files still have no Artist name associated with them?  Are you using Windows Media Player?   Quote

Do these music files still have no Artist name associated with them?  Are you using Windows Media Player?

If I play the files, usually the song title and artist will show up; however, they all appear in the "unknown artist folder."
I burned and ripped the files with Windows Media Player, but I play them on iTunes. The reason i don't rip them on iTunes is because it creates a new file, where what I want to do is re-link the NEWLY ripped file back to its old data.
I was re-ripping the songs to lower their bitrate, you see. So all the songs are already present in iTunes with all the info and lyrics I created. But even after I moved and re-linked the files, they keep going back to the Unknown Artist folder.
I've been doing this for a while; only recently within the last two months has this ever happened before, and it's always the exact same files. Since then, I haven't tried ripping files again.
Ah...also, I use iTunes 7.0.2.16 and WMP 10.00.00.406. I beleive I've updated iTunes since the incident first happened, from 7.0.1 to 7.0.2.
Well, I’m not sure what to make of your situation.  Regarding the possibility that CCleaner has something to do with this, I think you can probably verify this by not running the Issues scan for awhile and at the same time do some more testing of your procedure.  Or, you might experiement with not including the Multimedia items in the Applications scan and/or the Windows Explorer items in the Windows scan.

You might also post your question in CCleaner’s FORUM; it’s at http://forum.ccleaner.com/.  I really suspect the problem is not CCleaner; it’s a widely used cleanup tool and its popularity is undoubtedly attributable to the fact that it’s usually quite safe to use.

My best guess is that the problem may be due to the re-ripping you’re doing and that some aspect of your procedure is causing this.  When your re-rip something (assuming you’re ripping from a CD), do you still have the song from the first ripping on your hard drive?

If anyone else has some thoughts, please share them.

Hmm...When I first ripped the files, the original files were stil present. However, I deleted them after moving the new files. Or did I overwrite them? I'm not entirely sure. At the present time, however, I only have one set of files. All the originals are gone.
Um, if it helps, the originals were all MP3s dpownloaded form the net. The ones I have now were all burned to CD and ripped.

I did wonder if I'd done something wrong when I was burning the files, except for the fact that I've been doing it for at least a year or so. It's the only way I know to lower bitrates.

Solve : Language In Outlook Express??

Answer»

Hi: Is it possible to change the language dictionary used for spell checking by Outlook Express? If so, where might I obtain an English dictionary? Thanks for your ASSISTANCE...If you have Microsoft Office installed, you will have spell checking capability in OE.  Apparently, you do not have Office.  Am I right?  The Microsoft Works Suite (not just Works, must but a Works Suite which includes Word) will also add spell checking capability to OE.

If you don't have Microsoft Office or Microsoft Works and you would still like to be able to spellcheck your Outlook Express messages then you can do one of the following:
    * Install a spell checker made  specifically for Outlook Express, such as isota ABCSpell for Outlook Express.
    * Install a spell checker that works in any Windows application, such as As-U-Type.

I do have Office installed, but it is a non-English vgersion of the program...It tries to suggest French words...Thanks..My guess is, as I said in my previous post, you'll need to install a special spell checker.  HOWEVER, since you have Office installed, I SUSPECT you may have to do something to make the installed spell checker function as the default spell checker for OE.  And, I'm really not sure how that would work or whether it would work at all.

Perhaps installing Thunderbird as your email program would work better in this situation.  I believe it has it's own spell checker.  See http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/Many thanks for the Thunderbird idea...Solved the PROBLEM!

Solve : I can't Access/decrypt a folder - Pls Help?

Answer»

Hello guys,

After trying Okoker Encypt Folder Ver 1.2, I can't access/decrypt a folder in My Documents which I encrypted earlier with Okoker Encrypt Folder software Ver1.2. What happened is that after I installed normally the software, I encrypted a particular folder in My Documents to try out this software "speciality" but unfortunately, when I tried to decrypt the same folder, the program crashed. When I saw this I panicked and UNINSTALLED immediately the program deleting also any remaining files in the folder.

When I installed the program again and tried to decrypt the same problematic folder, the program is popping out 4 messages saying access violation, referring to certain addresses and locations in the memory. As a result I'm stuck and don't know what to do at this point. I even tried to do a system restore to a time before I installed the Okoker Encrypt folder software and also booted into safe mode but couldn't REMOVE the encyption in anyway.

Would someone please tell me what can I do at this stage to solve my problem?

I thank you in advance for your help.

Regards,

CorollaAnother user who was so concerned about security that they themselves cannot get into their documents! I guess that program works well for keeping eyes out.

Your only hope is to contact the maker of the program.Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Actually I'm awaiting a reply from the maker as well.

But I KEEP asking myself this QUESTION: is there another software maybe which removes completely the encryption (irrelevant with what program this encryption has been originally conducted) when applied to this particular folder, considering also I'm the administrator of my PC?

regards,

corollaEncryption is unique to each program. You really wouldn't wasnt a program if someone else COULD readily access your stuff, would you?Ok I wait maybe I get a reply from the maker. I'll let you know in case they find a solution to my problem.

Thanks anyway for your help.

Regards,

Corollatry to do it in safe modeI'm afraid it doesn't apply in this situation.

The files were being changed when the crash happened so who knows what changes were made.

Safe Mode has nothing to do with what was going on i'm afraid the only recourse at this point is with the software manuf. as GX1_Man stated...

Solve : Motherboard goes bad?

Answer»

Hello All.

My computer with Hdd has WINDOWS XP pro can not bootup because mother board is bad. I want to swap this C drive Hdd to ANOTHER
new mother board. What should I do? GURU please help.
TomI guess swap the motherboard.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=how+to+replace+motherboard

You will be ahead to reinstall Windows on the new components rather than trying to GET this version to work. Sometimes it can be done without this, but there are often problems and you will need to contact Microsoft again due to the activation anyway.

Perhaps some other details about your system would be helpful?THANKS friend

Solve : Question About System Restore?

Answer»

Hey
I need to Restore my computer back to the way it was when it CAME out of the box.  I was TOLD to do a system restore after backing up all my files and important documents.  Now the question is, to do the system restore, what do I need to do.  I know I need to do SOMETHING with Ctrl+F11 when I reboot.  Can some one tell me the proccess please, or if you know a better way to do this.It all depends on your computer maker, how the restore is done (CD vs. files on a hidden partition, etc). If you want to share that info, we'll be here.

In any case you will need to backup any important data because the drive will be erased.  I know that the Drive will be erased.
It is a Dell E1505 INSPIRON Notebook, 100 gig HDD, 1 gig of Ram, blaah blahh blahh
The files are partitioned because its a DELL (10 gigs of crap)
Yes, the key combination to start the restore is probably shown at startup (shift + F11 maybe?) If no idea

Did you know that you can probably get a real Windows CD for very little or free if you call and ask them?   This article claims $8.

http://pcworld.about.com/news/May172006id125754.htmdidnt your pc  come with a restore disk when it was in the box,

if so boot of it and i guess FOLLOW the manufacturers prompts

its f10-f12
im not sure which combo.. try all three Quote

Why guess when it's shown on his screen which we currently cannot see...?

Solve : Ground Hog Day?

Answer»

I have been reliving the same Microsoft update for the past 4 days. After receiving and installing the Windows updates from Microsoft, I keep getting notified to download and install the same update over and over. I have now installed KB923980 seven times and still the machine keeps notifying me to download and install this critical update.

The Windows Update history SHOWS that this was installed successfully all seven times. It even shows up in the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel.

I finally removed the hotfix and started from scratch. Nothing has changed, the notifications keep coming. This update does not require a reboot, so as soon as I install it, the NOTIFICATION icon pops up and tells me to download and install it again.

Any thoughts what to do? I checked the install file and I'm not really sure this was applied properly but then again maybe it was :-?

This is on a WinXP SP2 machine. Fully updated except for patch KB923980I'm guessing! It might require admin priviledges to properly install. Try going off line, and see if it will manually install from the admin account. Verify the files validity before you do this. Thanks 2K but that didn't help. Neither did going to safe mode. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get windows patches in safe mode with networking? Not fun.

I also worked around the Automatic Updates procedure and hunted down the patch on the Microsoft site as a singular file download. Still not working. At this point I'm just going to ignore the notification until the next Patch Tuesday. Every time I install this sucker, a new system restore point is taken which means right now I can only go BACK about 17 hours!

I'm in the groundhog twilight zone at the moment after doing the update issued about 3 weeks ago Thanks Fed. That was the link I used to download the patch trying to avoid the Automatic Updates procedure. Still ended up with the same results. The install log showed I didn't have the right file versions for patching. After researching the patch I decided I really don't need it since it concerned the Netware Client which I don't use.

To get rid of the notification icon, I clicked the "Don't show me this update" box on the Windows Update site.
