Solve : Video controler?

Answer»

I'm running WINDOWS small business 2003, At start up I'm getting a new hardware found. it starts looking for : Video Controller", it can't find and is asking for disk? I have no idea what disk to PUT in?. The difference I SEE is that when trying to scroll the screen, it won't scroll smoothly, but rather in steps and choppy, if that makes sense. Thanks for any helpTake a look in Device Manager - any yellow EXCLAMATION marks? Sounds like you may have to reinstall your video driver for some reason. You are right. How do I know what driver to install. I have disks from every computer I have ever had. Of course that doesent mean I know what the are all for, or what computer they came from?In device manager click on "Display Adapters" - that will show you the MODEL you have. Now go to the website of the manufucturer of that card and download and install the current driver for that model."Display Adapters" is not an optionDo you have an onboard video card/chip? You can go to Display Properties - Settings - Advanced - Adapter. Or download either Belarc Advisor (my choice) or Everest. Install and run. Either of those apps will tell you exactly what hardware you have installed.Okay, I did that and it said it is a "VGA Save" but I can't seem to find the manufacturer on linehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGASAVE

Solve : base system device?

Answer»

i have a dell inspiron 1405 running XP, sp2. several weeks ago i started getting a found new hardware message every time i turned on the computer, for base system device. when i would go through the install wizard, searching either online or with the XP drivers disk, i get "driver cannot be found." now i just hit cancel when the wizard comes up; the wizard comes up again, i hit cancel again, and after that i can operate the computer normally. when i CHECK properties for the three base system devices listed in device manager, it says either "device is not configured correctly" or "drivers for this device were not installed." clicking on scan for changes or reinstall just takes me back to the install wizard.

can anyone TELL me either a) how do i find what drivers i need to install or this or b) can i safely disable or uninstall the base system devices without harming other functions? if it is related to a card reader or chipset, as i have seen on other sites, can i re-install safely?

thanks,
andyEnter your Service Tag number on Dell's support site and see if there is a more current chipset driver available.thanks allan, will give that a shot.
Just on a hunch...
Do a real good check for some kind of Mallarme.
Like a RootKit thing. allan: tried the dell site - oddly when i plugged in my service tag gave me the wrong model (and didn't offer XP as an OS option - but did get through entering model (as i've tried before), downloaded the two chipset they had listed and re-started - no change.

geek-9pm: sorry for an ignorant a question, but how do i do a check for a mallarme? i don't know what a mallarme is, except a poet - and that i just learned :-)Did you just download the driver or did you actually install it? And there should be only ONE current chipset driver for your system - what do you mean there were two? Quote from: asmarkowitz on January 05, 2010, 12:39:38 PM

Dell can have more than 1 model number for the same computer. I'm thinking it may have to do with if sold by Dell direct or one of their retailers (i.e., Walmart).allan: they had two driver sets listed under chipsets. i tried both.

commando: bought from dell direct. about three years ago.and did install, using the dell driver installer.Okay, let's start at the top. There can only be one chipset driver for your system. Is that what you got - the CHIPSET DRIVER? If so, and if there were two listed, you want ONLY the more current one. Next - What is a Dell Driver Installer (and you should know I have 12 Dell systems)?sorry mean the download manager. was prompted to install it when i downloaded the intel mobile chipset driver version a09. one of the two chipset drivers that came up for my model. there was also a ricoh chipset. i have deleted that. but it was the more recent driver.Geek was suggesting you check for MALWARE (full scan with both your AV and MALWAREBYTES). I don't think that's the problem, but there's no harm in ruling it out either. I thought the chipset driver would have solved your problem.thanks allan. just deleted the older intel chipset and tried installing the newer ricoh one. just installed and will restart and see if that takes care of it. i have done scans since this problem started and haven't found any malware, but can never hurt to try again.ok, the ricoh driver seems to have done the trick - no new hardware message when i BOOTED, no base system device in the manager. thanks!Okay, GREAT. I knew it had to be the chipset driver - you just had to figure out which one. Anyway, glad it's all sorted out.

Solve : XP keeps looping...won't boot?

Answer»

HP Pavillion a1520n/XP Media CENTER Edition 2005

PC seemed to work fine yesterday. Son said it "froze" last night so he shut it down by holding in the power button. Today when I tried to boot it, it takes me to a black screen that says "we apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully....." When I try to start it normally, it just goes through some processes and then comes back to the same window. When I choose "safe mode" it runs through some processes and comes back to the same window.

Please help!

Thanks, Karol Do you have a current back up???Unfortunately...not!How about an XP install disk?I have the recovery disks (that I made) but don't want to do a reformatUnfortunately, most restore disks are equipped with a .SIF file which tells windows how to install. Auto partitioning and formatting is generally included as well. If you can manage to find a clean install disk, you can dual partition, yet retain your old files.

You may also download Linux Ubuntu from another PC and use the live OS from disk to retreive your files.I have NOOO idea how to do any of that! I would need step by step instructions. I do have access to a second pc...but it runs vista, not xp media. You may be better off having a computer savy friend help you out, but here's the nitty gritty

If you don't have a windows install disk CHOICE 1 won't help. Use choice 2 to recover any data you didn't have backed that you can afford to lose. All idea's I had involved an installation disk.Unfortunately...I don't want to lose ANY data! I have about 2000 Itunes songs....ughhhh! Quote from: SAGEBRUSH on January 03, 2010, 03:51:53 PM

Solve : Pop ups that are not pop ups??

Answer»

When I start up my pc before I connect to anything I get stuff that I cant seen to get rid of? How do I get rid of it?

One example is the following [.ShellClassInfo]
[email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787

  The upper bar says desktop-notepad

So I want to know howto get rid of this and other things0-thanks
karllooks like somebody accidentally dragged the desktop.inf file into the startup folder-

we still need more info though- Windows Version?I have windows XPalright then, what(if anything) do you have in your startup folder? (Start->programs->Startup)I can get to start then programs but how do I get to startup?Go to 'All Programs' and report the contents of the Startup folder.OK- I have MS office which does nothing when I click it the other says desktop and I will paste it here [.ShellClassInfo]
[email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787
Good job - Please wait and BC_Programmer will advise you.try moving the "desktop" item out of the startup folder. Thanks for helping remove that desktop-notepad item from opening every time I startup! Hopefully you can help remove the following in some similar fashion.
These are all in a folder titled Acrobat.com. There are 3 closed FOLDERS one is called META-INF, one called assets and last one named bin-debug. The files are an XLM document named version, one that says mimetype File both of these are 1KB and the last just says Acrobat.com.

I'm not SURE I UNDERSTAND what your TRYING to do. Where is the acrobat.com folder? On the desktop?

What happens when you try to delete it/them?It pops up on the desktop every time I startup.I did not want to delete them if it might cause a problem.
I do not know how to describe what pops up other then the following.
These are all in a folder titled Acrobat.com. There are 3 closed folders one is called META-INF, one called assets and last one named bin-debug. The files are an XLM document named version, one that says mimetype File both of these are 1KB and the last just says Acrobat.com.

So- is this an explorer window that's appearing, showing a folders contents? Its a folder called Acrobat.com that has the items that I listed in it.
This is "before" I go on line - It pops up when windows loads upAlright- I have an idea.

Download a program called "autoruns":

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

Run it- once it finishes, use File->Save As to save a log.

Attach that log to your NEXT post, and I'll take a look.

Solve : Computer automatically logs off?

Answer»

When trying to log into my computer it starts the process and then auto-logs me off. I am not able to access the desktop or my start button at all. I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP. I have a 20G HARD drive with 256K ram.

My daughter was running Spybot, but did not update prior to starting the scan. It locked up. I tried to REBOOT, but am not able to get in at all. My son suggested trying to do a recover, but I do not have a recovery disc. I tried using the XP upgrade disc, but am not sure what to do with it beyond the basic functions of repairing. Doing this did not change anything. Looking for suggestions. The computer is 7 years old and I am more CONCERNED about accessing the data than anything. If I could get it to tide me over till I get a new one that would be great!!
Thank you for your help. I am excited about the option of free support!!
lynNumber of things can cause the logoff like that. Usually they are viral, so you might be faced with trying to remove a virus. Other cause woudl be if the Windows ACTIVATION broke and your grace period to activate has ended, but with that you would be prompted to activate before being able to access your system.

I'd look into finding an antivirus that can boot from CD and boot your system off of it to run a low level scan. I am not aware of any free ones, but I know that Norton AV and MCAFEE generally have a boot from CD scan out of box feature to scan the systems on boot with definition dates only as recent as the product packed date by mfr. This might fix it if it is viral as it sounds to be.Great I will try that. Thank you!!
I have not gotten a hold of an antivirus boot from CD yet. I am trying to have my son download one.

My husband has been trying things. We are now getting a message that says the Windows install is not complete - try again.

Does that mean he reformatted the hard drive and I have lost everything? Is there a way to get the docs off from the hard drive? It doesn't necessarily mean that the hard drive has been formatted. Doesn't mean it hasn't though . . .

Have you tried to get into Safe Mode? (Press F8 while the system is booting.) If you can get into safe mode you will be able to check the contents of the drive.

Solve : Fatal system error... dunno what to do....?

Answer»

I have been doing malware scans due to some problem with my drives, cause I can't open them directly.

One day in the midst of my scans and fixes, after I've done the OTMoveIt2 cleanup, well not exactly after, maybe sometime after... I had to shut down my computer and the screen turned blue with the words Fatal system error, then it restarted.

The first time this happened I took off the plug, cause I really needed to turn it off, cause I'll be LEAVING the house.

Then when I turned it on again, there's this WINDOW that said "windows logon error" something like that. so I clicked on the send error report, then what came out is that there might be a problem with the drives or its drivers.

Instead of doing what was there, I did another cleanup cause I was not able to finish what I was supposed to do according to an instruction given to me, then I made a RESTORE point.

When I was having a problem staying connected to my wireless, I decided to turn it off, again the blue window with the "Fatal system error" came out and instead of shutting down it restarted.

After so, I did some stuff in the computer, opened some APPS, and because the computer is running so slow and I'm a bit drowsy I decided to turn it off.

Now it won't turn off, the mouse is on the busy state, like so.

Hope SOMEONE could help me with this.chkdsk /f scheduled for next boot. you have hard disk errors it appears. Are there any error codes accompanying the FATAL ERRORS and the blue screen? Quote

Solve : Programs installation?

Answer»

I INSTALLED a program on my computer and it installed an Icon on my desktop and everytime I double click it or the file itself under Win/Program Files/PhotoView.exe an application, a window comes up saying:

Can't find any photoviewer, or another program owns it. The program will exit!

How can I find the program that owns it?By telling us which program it is ? ? I don't quite understand what your saying but I'm installing Photo Viewer Software from colbyusa.com thats for a keychain photo viewer, PhotoView V1.2. After I installed the program on my computer and it installed an Icon on my desktop and everytime I double click it or the file itself under Win/Program Files/PhotoView.exe an application, a window comes up saying:

Can't find any photoviewer, or another program owns it. The program will exit!

How can I find the program that owns it?There are several solutions...try each I've listed below:

Quote

*The cause of this error message: When connecting the Key Chain to your computer,
the Keychain will prompt you to select “USB Charge or USB Update". Select USB
Update (Press the RIGHT button and then MIDDLE button) then RUN the Photo
Viewer Software.

*Make sure that the USB Cable is plugged in all the way (you should hear a clicking
sound).

*Go to your Desktop to make sure your computer recognizes the Key Chain. The Key
Chain should be listed as a REMOVABLE DISK. If not, replace the cable.

*Go to your Device Manager to make sure your computer recognizes the Key Chain.
The Key Chain should be listed as a STORAGE device in the Device Manager. If
not, replace the cable.

*Make sure you have FULL ADMINISTRATOR RIGHTS on your computer *a)Create a new
user account and give that account full admin rights, b) Connect the Key Chain, c) Set
the Key Chain to USB Update, d) Run the Photo Viewer software.
Saviour, thanks very much, the first suggestion worked, it was the sequence. You're welcome...

Glad to hear everything's good to go...

Solve : How do I transfer my music collection??

Answer»

I have a small cassette tape music collection that I would like to transfer to CD. As I understand it, this will involved Line Out from the tape player, to Line In on my PC (Gateway Media Center running XP Pro)

I have looked at several audio programs and have DL'd Audacity. But I can't figure out how to make the software find the Line In music from the tape player. Would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks

Wesfirst you install nero software.. than you write music collection in your cd.Hi

I seem to remember that Nero took a few hundred Megabytes on my Hard drive,
and got really entrenched with a VAST number of files and registry keys.
It did not TAKE too long to install - but purging it AFTERWARDS was another MATTER !!!

Surely there must be something more light weight to copy from a cassette player ?

Regards
Alan
connect the line out of your cassette player to the mic input of your PC. Then when you start audacity, choose mic input instead of Stereo mix in the dropdown. Now when you start audacity, it will record from the mic

Solve : Unwanted URL login Pop-up blocks site use?

Answer»

After I open a particular program--itunes.com--a Microsoft-looking pop-up appears over the itunes screen. It is titled, "Connect to content.komando.com". [komando.com is a site I sometimes go to, but the problem exists whether or not I've logged-in to komando.com].

Below the TITLE are graphics of a silver and a gold key, followed by:

The SERVER content.komando.com at content.komando.com requires a username and password.

Warning:This server is requesting that your username and password be sent in an INSECURE manner (basic authentication without a SECURE connection).

A drop-down box has two e-mail addresses, one that no longer exists and the other that I rarely use. Neither is the correct log-in for komando.com. I cannot type in the correct log-in, even if I wanted to risk doing that. This problem happens EVERY time, even when I am not looking for, or logged into, komando.com.

I have tried to Cancel the pop-up, but when I do it instantly reappears before I can do anything in itunes.

What is this pop-up? Is it legit and, if so, why is it appearing at itunes?

Any help in getting rid of it permanently WOULD be very much appreciated. --DavidDoesn't sound legit as komando is a legit site and wouldn't request an unsecure login...
Contact komando and then visit our Virus and Spyware section and follow the guide at the top of the page "Please Read this first"

Solve : two operating systems,me&xp??

Answer»

i am going to buy xp and am currently running me and how can i make it possible for both to exist without having to uninstall windows me? thank you for your time.

[Saving space - ATTACHMENT deleted by admin]Mind if I ask why you'd like to keep Me?ok i i will get rid of me what do i need to do to get READY for xp?fdisk or something like that? thanks First thing you may want to do is save any documents, photos, etc., you want from Me...before you take the plunge...

Once that's done...you really don't need to fdisk...

All you need to do is insert the XP CD and boot from it...

Here's a good guide to follow: http://www.saviourpc.com/windows_xp_clean_install

You can remove the partition that currently holds Me...create another partition...then format (PREFERABLY NTFS) the hard disk that you'll install XP on...

The reason I asked about Me...

Me has got to be one of, if not, the worst operating system MICROSOFT has offered to the general public.

The only thing good that CAME from Me is that it gave us XP...

Let us know if you need any additional help...say, thanks for your help (me) is what came with computer and hardly any new software will work so i am really looking forward to the upgrade the info you gave is exactly what i wanted to know many thanks to you!! keep on rockin!!!! You're welcome...

Let us know how the install goes. We'll keep a light on for ya.How much memory does that computer have? I would suggest having 256mb at the very least to run XP.Post some computer info: processor type, amount of RAM, hard drive size.
We'll tell you, if it meets XP requirements (do NOT bother with what M$ says about it).

Solve : does XP have the restart stuff like vista??

Answer»

i had a guy run my vista loaded laptop back to the initial startup/registration phase---absolutely wiping out the accumulated data but starting the system anew. I did not have the corresponding disks or I wouldve done it myself.

I ALSO have a pc that was infected with the same crap that made me have to do that to my laptop, but my pc is an XP system. i do not have the original disks (maybe i do but i a cant locate it). does XP have the proper reinstallation software written to the hard drive? and if so, what are the commands to make this happen. I would like to save some things on here but it is not a pre-requisite. i need to clean this thing and start anew but do not have the discs

if you have a suggestion or know a solution, e mail me at [email removed to prevent spam and we like to keep all topics on the forum]

i You will need the Windows XP CD.

You will need to borrow a disc.

If you tell us the problem, we may be able to help you, however.Sorry for the delay! Thanks for the reply.

This COMPUTER once belonged to my father and he is notorious for for opening everything he has in his inbox as well as visiting every link in said email. It has a problem and he gave it to me because he'll just buy a new one and do the same thing to it.

When i try to start the computer it has a pop up box that is saying something about how some program "failed to initialize. you will have to restart the application" but I select ok and it just does it again. I try to cancel and it just keeps doing it.

The computer is absolutely full of spyware, adware and probably some more malicious type stuff. My father used the free sample of word perfect to write a book (that he almost finished) but never saved it. Now the introductory has run its coarse and the book cannot be accessed. He will not purchase the word perfect but wants me to get the book out before I wipe the hard drive.

I want to do this for him but I am stuck. This is a compaq and has just about every kind of feature one could want but it is useless right now.

What to do?

Thanks for the help.
CarlyAll right, so you want to start over after retrieving some files.

Is this a Desktop computer we're talking about? Why is this posted in DOS section?I assumed that, since what I am trying to do has to be typed in the command prompt section prior to windows opening, I was in the right forum. If not, please direct me to the correct area.

If your Compaq has recovery partition, you can access it by pressing F11 during computer startup.
Recovery process will return your computer to its original state. All data will be lost.i got to the system recovery (which was actually F10) and have gotten to the point of asking me which windows installation i would like to log onto

1: I:\I386
2: I:\MiniNT
3: C:\WINDOWS

I have tried the windows option at which point it asks for the administrators password. there are no passwords on this computer for the administrator. my dad had the guy set it up with none. I just chose option 3 and pressed ENTER, at which point the command line started as so

C:\WINDOWS\
(i may be missing some punctuation in the line but thats it)

after that it just sat there. I press enter and it just duplicates the same thing below it.

I dont know what to do from here.

and if I am supposed to be posting questions of this sort somewhere else, please tell me where. I am new to this site. And while I have been using windows for almost 20 years, I am only now beginning to delve into the backbone of these things and I very much want to know more about what is going on behind the windows. You're doing something wrong.
Read HERE
See "Recovering during startup" section.it is too late now. my dad came by last night while i wasnt here and stuck some startup disk in the computer---he only had one--- and got the ball rolling on installing xp anew. but the thing is, he only had one disk and now it is asking for disk two, which we dont have. now i cant get the computer to do anything but ask for the rest of the setup disks.

i guess i have ruined this thing because i dont have the 200 dollars to go by windows xp off the shelf.

totally dejected
tonesageAt this point, I simply don't know what to tell you, since I don't know what your dad exactly did.
If he reformatted HD, you're out of luck, and you need Windows XP CD.
If he didn't, Recovery Partition should be still there.
It won't hurt to try to access it.Agreed. You can borrow a Windows CD if you have to.i will have to borrow the cd. when i start the computer now it just says it failed to find some file and please resume the installation of windows. that is, of coarse, not verbatim. but rest assured, i do have to install windows fresh. this may be a blessing in disguise though because now i can set this computer up like i want it.

i have one question. when i reformat the system, does that mean that everything that was on it previously is erased? and, also, can i put windows xp media edition in? a friend of mine has a computer with that version of xp and it is the best i have seen.

thanks for all the help and i will let you know how it goes. and even ask foe assistance, i am QUITE sure.

Solve : Windows Fax and Picture Viewer and Photo Print Wizard *censored*?

Answer»

These APPS are driving me nuts. Has anyone here been able to successfully completely and totally remove either of them?

I really just hate Photo Print Wizard because it doesn't have an option to print images at their real, default size, they MUST be 8x10, 5x7, full page, wallet size. Unfortunately, Windows Fax and Picture Viewer SEEMS to call this program to do its printing.

Using "regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll" to disable WFPV seems to break things, e.g. can't double click images to open (have to right click and go to edit), can't open images from within archive.

Deleting HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers\ShellImagePreview and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ CLSID\{e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066}\shellex\MayChangeDefaultMenu didn't seem to have any effect on anything that I noticed.

The only option I think would be to go to each individual image file type in the folder options and modify them all. Does anyone know a simpler way?

Word or Word Perfect will allow you to resize and print. Mail the image to yourself, XP will allow you to resize the image. PictureIT will allow a resize and print. Several third party programs will all allow resize and print.

IrfanView will allow resize and print . . .well, this user does not require the ability to resize images on their PC, and I can handle resizing on my end with gimp. they'd be perfectly fine just using mspaint, but the problem is modifying settings to use mspaint by default for everything.

Windows Fax and Picture Viewer is the default. Double clicking an image selects the "Preview" option which is controlled by Windows Fax and Picture Viewer, which in turn will only print with Photo Print Wizard, which, oddly enough, and it may not make sense if you've never used it, does NOT allow printing at the default size as specified by the image attributes. Furthermore, and this is very important, when I send this particular user an archive full of images, they can open the archive from within the email client, double click the image and it will open with Fax and Picture Viewer; there is no other option. This user is completely computer illiterate, so I ABSOLUTELY must dumb this process down as much as possible. In fact, asking them to right click has proven to be too much trouble.

Which brings me to the point you quoted. "The only option I think would be to go to each individual image file type in the folder options and modify them all. Does anyone know a simpler way?" Meaning going to Control Panel - Folder Options - File Types, going to each image, and modifying its behavior. Does anyone know a better option?

EDIT: Really, if anyone knows a freeware program (as I don't suppose reinstalling mspaint will accomplish this) that will associate itself with the preview option (and I think, therefore, allow opening images by double click from within archives) I think that'd do the trick.Irfanview...
Already suggested.Irfanview works great. Slight issue with having to click "Printer Setup" for no apparently reason every time he wants to print, but since there's no setting modification or right clicking, I think it's ok, and the case is essentially solved.

However, anyone else notice this with Irfanview? If you don't click "Printer Setup", the printer will make like it's about to print (not sure how a printer works, but there will be some movement inside), but the job will leave the queue before it begins. What OS and what printer ? ?

This is a warning from Windows Security Center. Normally, it means, that either firewall, or antivirus (or both) is not installed, or turned on.
Since it's a computer from your friend, probably clean install is your best option.
What EXACT error are you getting?

Solve : Disk Boot Failure Error?

Answer»

Hi Im currently building a computer for my car.....Ive got all the parts including an IDE solid state Hard Drive. I try to install windows xp using an external USB disk drive but I get the Disk Boot Failure Error....checked the Bios and replaced the Boot from usb floppy drive with usb Disk Drive....STILL nothing....can anybody help??? Are you sure everything is hooked up correctly?
Are you BOOTING from the Windows XP CD?Everything is hooked up correctly......and I am booting from the windows disk....on the bios the master drive is registering as my solid state.Disk Boot Error indicates the computer cannot boot from the HD.

What is the full error? (or is that it?)yup thats it.......it says
Disk Boot Failure, Insert System Disk and press Enter Quote

using an external USB disk drive

Does the MBoard support booting from a USB device ? ?
If not you need to use an internal optical drive to boot to the XP CD.

Have you set the external to be the first boot device in the BIOS ? ?

The error message is because the hard drive is EMPTY...That is the one thing I was wondering just if it was capable....the bios are set to boot from usb cd rom first and cd rom second....I do plan on trying it on an internal optical today. If it lists USB CDRom then it supports it...
Perhaps this is a LESS than genuine XP CD ? ?
Try another CD you know is bootable...If it's Disk Boot Failure, Insert System Disk and press Enter, doesn't it mean there is a problem with the hard drive itself? Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on October 21, 2008, 08:21:57 AM

Solve : Unmountable Boot Volume, and Windows CD doesn't work?

Answer»

Hi

Thanks in advance for any help

I've got a a Dell Lattitude D820 with Windows XP home.

One day, out of the blue, I started getting an ERROR MESSAGE when Windows tries to boot.

Unmountable_Boot_Volume

with some unhelpful directions, and then at the bottom,

Stop: 0X000000ED (0x864FB590, 0xC0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I checked out some different places and the general advice was to try and boot windows from the Windows CD. After setting the BIOS and cleaning the disk, this is what happens

Blue screen with “Windows Setup” appears and at the bottom it tells me all the little steps it's taking to get windows going. It all goes well and I get “Setup is starting Windows”

but then I get another blue screen of doom, this one says:

Stop: 0x0000007E (0xc0000005, 0xF76130BF, 0xF7A5F208, 0xF7A5EF08)

pci.sys- Address F76130BF base at F760C000, DateStamp 3b7d855c

I'm not even sure I can reformat if the CD won't work. Ugh. CD is working, hard drive isn't.
How to Perform a Windows XP Repair InstallGo into the Bios setup and disable ahci ata legacy on your hard disk.Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the PROGRAM, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "WRITE image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, UNFORTUNATELY, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.Computer_Commando- thanks, but step 2 of the directions on that link says "when you see the welcome to setup screen" ... and I can't get to that screen. I get blue screened before that.

prosportal- I don't think I can access advanced BIOS on my laptop. I checked online, and I saw one site where they said they don't let you access it on laptops, and at any rate I've tried every key combination i can think of from the BIOS menu- it just stays regular BIOS.

Broni- i guess i'm gonna have take it apart, i have no idea what kind of motherboard i have.

thx for the help allYou don't need to take it apart. Just pop out hard drive.OK, it's a toshiba. LameGrab one of these to retrieve your data...it enables you to hook up the laptop drive to anu working desktop machine...

tried a disc with the recovery console iso burned on it using the right program, still getting the same error message (pci.sys)Since Toshiba has no tools for testing the hard drive and the hard drive appears to not be functioning, it might be time to get a new hard drive. The adapter was for you to attempt to retrieve any data you don't have a backup for but if the drive is not functioning properly, there is no guarantee it will work.

You might try the Fujitsu utilities, since Toshiba purchased their hard disk drive business.

There ya go....

1. Piracy help not given here
2. Torrents can get you infected.
3. Torrent downloads are often corrupted.
4. Get Nero from Nero.com
5. That's it I think...

Just to put things right mate. Im not a daly user of torrents and i cant believe theres anyone that hasn't had somthing of one. No one is that white.
Anyway, as it happends, i do have a retail version of nero but we had a house fire just before XMAS and all my cd's went up in smoke togeather with other things.
This pc is a spare which hasn't got nero on and i wanted to burn some vid of the fire. ok

No, indeed, all I'm saying is that this forum doesn't officially support piracy. There are a whole load of free burning apps out there, Google is your friend, here's one that says it can create DVD-video discs. Dunno if it's better than Nero.

http://www.burnaware.com/burnaware_free.html
Because of your circumstances thats no reason to try and get it for free...
If my car stopped running does that make it OK for me to steal a car that runs ? ?

CDBurnerXPro BTW is another FREE option...

PS Only you can choose how white you want to be...
And i don't think that's an appropiate DESCRIPTION BTW...also why would you want videos of the fire? wouldn't those be the types of images you would not only have burned in your memory but also be most willing to LOSE? I mean, really, are you going to burn these to DVD and put them right next to wedding videos?
Get rid of the torrent version of nero......

then go here.....

http://cdburnerxp.se/

works great and is free.....

Nero actually offer a free version called "Nero 9 Lite" which can only copy or burn data disks.

http://www.nero.com/eng/downloads-nero9-free.php

I didn't know that.....

I still wouldn't use nero. I never really liked it and found it had to much over head for a CD burning software.

Solve : No sound, I need the correct audio driver.?

Answer» HI guys

My laptop does not have any sound, and earlier i downloaded an realtek ac 97 driver. I went to the device manager - sound, video and audio controllers - Multimedia audio controller and got the option to "reinstall driver". Solve : Outdated modem?

Answer»

I recently updated from Windows 98 to Windows XP. My computer, which I first purchased in 2002, probably has an out-dated modem. I use dial-up for the Internet and moving around is very, very, very slow and arduous. It doesn't matter what time of day I go online. I really don't feel comfortable messing with my computer's innards so I'm averse to putting in a new internal modem and I don't know if I have any empty slots left on the BACK to put in an external one. If I was to upgrade to a broadband connection. WOULD my out-dated modem STILL cause me problems? No as you would be using a totally different medium to connect to the Internet by way of an ethernet card.

Alan <>< DEPENDING on where you are and what Co. is going to be your Broadband provider they supply a brand new modem...and as Alan stated it hooks directly into any NIC connection on your machine.

Solve : Partition HD in Half, XP "solved"?

Answer»

hi, I have split my drive in half and use Acronis disk 10. it's like partition MAGIC.
I split my drive in half.. one was for XP of course NTFS file system and the other was Linux 2007.
even before i install Linus the Linux side froze up and yes i was having the same issues with XP. They where both acting strange.

Now, I know i did this right and maybe you can say if I'm crazy or not. even when Linux is install or not they freeze.

Just in-case nobody knows how Linux installs... when i put the CD in the drive and went threw the options... it would take me to a desktop... "now even if i see this Linux desktop it isn't install yet. It is not like XP, how ever it was giving the same problems.

it would freeze if i was using a application or not... XP and Linux.

I did believe it may have been the program that partition the HD... so i uninstall it. same problem.. "freeze"
I know it's not a hardware issue either.. been down that road.
Note:
i did do a chkdsk /r and defrag my drive before and after i partition, still giving me issue.

I also did restore my PC from my back up program.. the drive was one whole drive again with just the C drive only... XP was fine and i did not get a freeze or any problems.

I did get a update from the company and they seem at a lost. "acronis"

however, i did the split again with this new update... same problem.

now I decide to reinstall my XP fresh... with my CD..."this xp CD is not a restore CD" it is the whole OS"

with out putting the Acronis partition disk 10 in the computer.. so since the drive where already
split in half.... I figure maybe with out this program... "I thought in theory this program "Acronis was corrupting both OS XP and Linux

I was wrong!
it may not be Acronis!

Does anyone have any problems Partition there drive in half, making two Os with a Maxtor HD
I talk to Maxtor and they don't know nothing or the person.

I have a Pentium 4 3.00GB
Ram 2GB
Hard drive is 300GB so there is alot of space
Nvidia geforce 6200 AGP
.
SP2

I have Linus 2007 Ker 2.6

Thanks again!

Until we have accurate details it is what it is...ok, should I just get another HD and put Linux in there instead This drive may not handle Partition very good.
does anyone have any problems as of partition there drive and if they did ok... with what type of drive.

I just don't believe this event or problem should happen but, it did.

Thanks

This sure sounds a lot more difficult than it needs to be.

Delete ALL partitions on the drive, then create a primary partition (however big you want) for XP and leave the rest of the drive unpartitioned. (You don't need Acronis or any other program to do this, and it WILL complicate things if you try.)

After you install XP then insert the Linux CD. (You didn't say what distribution and there are 100+. This info would help.) Install the linux into all of the free space. Just take the default install. It will also install the boot loader so you may choose what operating system you want to run when the computer starts.

It's really very simple. Just take your time.

Do please let me know what Linux variant you are using.

GX1 ok.. I'll give it a try but if it doesn't work than what
The reason I'm asking is because something tells me it's going to do this again.. I hope not.

The Linux I have is: PClinuxos 2007 radically simple i got it from on-disk.com
Thanks again

spiderIt will boot up as a "live CD" which means it is functional running from the CD drive. There will be an icon on the desktop to perform the install.

The Install wasn't the part I was afraid of GX1_Man

I also know how to make my own partition without Acronis. The only real reason for someone to use a partition program is so they can keep there programs and other stuff without reinstalling them.

I did try it your way and it didn't work!

I also was talking about the freeze on both OS and problems not asking how to install windows or create a partition using fdisk. Thanks for the tip anyway.

The install is always easy... I have no problem with install and they never gave me issues....

I also know how to do a duel boot system but, for some reason... the HD doesn't function right when it's split in half. "This is why I ask if people if they where having problems with Maxtor HD"

thanks and let me know what you think... and if you forget what I did.... just read from the beginning and it will tell you.

Thanks again!
spiderI don't know, spider -- I've never had a drive of any brand not work simply because I created partitions on it. Then, of course, I've never used Acronis to partition drives.Aegis , I also try Partition magic and that didn't work.
My point is no partition program will work at all... so I did try to create my partition with XP instead... so i delete my Partition and made it one again after that.. i create the partition and split it in half with XP only and this is before i install xp now.

That didn't work which i found strange.. never seen that coming before but something told me that it would not work.! I'm sure The Acronis Partition would have work fine... it wasn't the programs fault guys because it was still giving me problems and my Hardware is great, even the motherboard.
I still have a backup of all my programs in my external drive... but it will take a few hours to install... that part I was Trying to avoid.
I know what someone will say.. did you update your Bios.
Bios update have nothing to do with partition your HD. " to split your drive in half". Now if I'm wrong... please correct me.

However, i did install a second drive so i will see how this comes into play.

If anyone did partition there drive, what type of drive was it and what program did you use... OS would be nice.

Thanks guys for the help and the education.. I thought I knew it all
Spider
Have you ran the FREE HDD DIAGNOSTICS on that Maxtor now available at Seagates site ? ?
Are you setting up the 2ND partition as an extended partition ? ?
It's pretty wierd you've tried 3 methods and none of them work...patio, I did it all. Even when i sent the information back to Acronis, they would have told me i was making my partitions wrong because they sent me a program to give the PC a diagnostic on what was wrong and they couldn't fine anything.

I fine it strange this happen so I went to plan C. which should have been plan A

A second drive in the PC and see how that comes into play and if i have problems than you can say it maybe something I'm doing wrong but, right now no.

I'm not crazy or dum but I can say I have never had a partition problem before.

This is why I ask this one question again.. "has anyone partition before and what type of drive because Maxtor doesn't seem to work, or at least mine doesn't."

Thanks again! It's got nothing to do with your drive being a Maxtor. Nothing at all. Worst case, your drive is faulty. Not because it's a Maxtor, but simply because the drive itself is faulty. This may or may not be the case.

You keep saying "I did it all", but you're not providing details of what exactly you did and what the results were. You need to provide precise details of everything or this is never going to get solved. I suggest you start over at the beginning of this thread, follow ALL of the suggestions provided, keep precise notes on everything that happens, every message you receive, etc. Then, post again and provide all the details.quaxo, I never said it had anything to do with Maxtor... it was a question
I also thought I post my info from the top about my problems and what i did. My drive is not faulty and my specs/hardware are not having any problems.

I have tested them with segate website that has been there for a long time. I also tested it with my Micro-scope

OK.. to prove my point that i was doing this right, i will do it again... I will get back and even Maxtor might agree.

I'll let you know.
thanks.

spider
No, you never SAID it was anything to do with your hard drive being a Maxtor drive, but you did ask. I was simply answering your question.

I suggest you remove all your partitions so the drive is totally empty. Let Windows setup create its partition only to the size you want that partition to be (don't make the partition the whole drive and split it later). After the Windows installation completes, install Linux and let it create its partition in the unused space.quaxo, thanks for getting back... I did all that before i saw your post.

This wasn't the first time either, that i did this.

In the pass this method would have worked .. now I found something new I never thought that I would need!

Yes, it is fix.

I did everything by "protocol" My motherboard Bios was up to date and could see the capacity of the whole drive, which was DONE a long time ago... I figure I add that in.

strange it didn't work and the drivers for the drive where find with xp pro.... hmmm what did I find out?

I install Maxblast 5 installation software.... after that, it ask me "that Maxblast detected that it couldn't see the full capacity of My HD do you want to enable it?".... but I still saw the full capacity of my HD. I enable it..

now, i don't know if this had anything to do with Maxtor Maxblast or not, or what ever but, it worked!

Thanks for getting back quaxo and everbody else that try to help.

When i purchased my desktop, it already has windows xp installed and came with no xp CD, i have the cod sticker on the side with the product key on it but I need guidance on how to reformat without the xp CD can someone please help me?Format, and what?
You'll need some Windows installed, won't you? You need Windows CD.
You may be able to work around this problem, if your computer came with Recovery Partition.sorry, I looked on the forums and kinda got lost. I hit f10 to do a recovery and it was successful it reinstalled windows, but i wanted to reformat my hardrive. is there anything ELSE i should do?You want to format HD without reinstalling Windows, or what?I want to reformat and REINSTALL windows. You just said: Quote

I restarted my computer and hit F10 and a recovery program started and it gave me one OPTION. I proceeded with that option and it reinstalled windows but it did not completley reformat my desktop? It did.If you want to reformat using a valid key, and reactivate it, you'll have to use original windows xp setup cd. Otherwise you wouldn't get an original windows installed on your desktop. purchasing a new original windows xp setup cd is the only solution. Quote from: revolver1001 on October 17, 2008, 09:22:07 PM

Solve : System clash, wronf config.?

Answer»

Hi.. someone please help me,
i'm a practical student. i got 2 laptop (A & B) and my task is to paste system config from A to B. But I did wrong, and got B paste to A instead. Which i need to tell, laptop A have a user password protection and its user account is protected from access. I did repair windows but all the result is a total FAILURE, the setup always RESTART right after it started. the problem actually is i accidentally copy and paste all file in folder config in system32 from laptop B and paste it in folder config on laptop B. Dude, i almost got myself scream when i realize that. please help, right now i can only format this hdd. but there something bothering me,

1) i need to get rid of the user account protection so i can backup the data and format this hdd or
2) how can i resolve this problem without reformat. Are you sure you're doing a repair install?
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmYes. I am positively sure i did that. However, setup was failed because it cannot BOOT. I think because i have REPLACED all data in the config section maybe the cause. If anyone know how to remove user protection so i can backup the data in user account would be extremely helpful. Are you sure you're booting from the CD?Yes, i only setup 2 boot option on the BIOS. the first is CD-rom and 2nd is hard disk.Ok, what System Config is this?i guess it on user profile.. location here:

"windows\system32\config\"

i've paste all files inside it with other drive files. Can help me on this? You might want to look here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

What were you trying to accomplish anyways? My priority is to RECOVER the data on user account before reformat windows. However it is protected from any access and cause me extremely painful LOOKING for solution ^^. Second is to repair windows without format if possible as i cant risk losing any data.

Btw, this is the exact problem state when boot my laptop "System error: Lsass.exe
When trying to update a password the return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct." I'll try looking on the link for solution first. All right, good luck!erm, anyway, can you point me to a direction where i can get guide on accessing protected user account on windows xp please? i cant get to a correct guide page on the www.Wait, so you want to get into the protected account without going through windows?yeah.. because i already make it an external hdd. however i found out one example on this, and still trying. It is to take ownership of the file. But im still trying and didnt know the result yet.Take ownership of file or folder: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421Thanks a lot. I finally did it. i can access to the user account again. So i think i'm gonna reformat this notebook. The link you gave me help a lot. ^^

Solve : Missing Drivers after reinstalling Windows XP?

Answer»

I recently had to reinstall Windows XP after getting struck with a virus. My system now seems to have no drivers installed for audio, video, WiFi, etc.

What can I do to restore my original drivers? There are several ways especially if you have the disc for your mother board. Try reinstalling each one from microsoft or the manufacturer of your computer. Most have a support/drivers site. You can also run a program called everest whice is probably downloadable. This program IDS all your drivers by name. Just go to those sites. Windows Updates can help you sometimes. Good luck! Thanks for the advice, but it's pretty hard to download anything when I can't access the internet because none of my internet connection drivers are installed. friends computer?save downloads to disk!!!Where are you posting from?

Do you have drivers CD, which should have came with your computer?

What's computer brand, and model?I am at work right now and I did download something from a drivers sight which claims to have all the drivers in existence. I'm going to try it when I get home.

I searched and searched but I can't seem to locate a disk with drivers on it among the disks I got when I bought my computer. The Windows XP reinstallation disk does say it contains no drivers.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501. I got a virus about a year ago and thought everything was fine after installing a virus cleaner. But I recently moved and had to set up an account with a new ISP. When I tried to log on to the internet, I couldn't connect. My system settings appeared to show a strong connection but every time I "logged on" I got the message that my I had "little or no connectivity" and I couldn't actually use my browser.

So I spent about six hours on the phone with Dell tech support and we tried everything to solve the problem. In the end, the tech support guy said I had to reinstall my operating system. So I bought an external hard drive, copied all my personal files and then reinstalled Windows XP using the disk provided to me by Dell.

When Windows was installed, it seemed to be an older version than what was originally installed on my computer. And I very quickly noticed the only Internet connection settings were for a dial-up connection. There seems to be nothing there that would allow me to set up a WiFi connection (I have a wireless router in my house and it works fine for other systems.) There also seems to be no video capability (I tried to install a computer game and it said my video capabilities were out of date) and I have no SOUND control at all. I can't even watch a DVD in the DVD drive.

Are there places I can go online, download the drivers I need to a jump drive and then install them on my home system? Quote

I can bet you $5, it won't do it for free. What's the name of that program? Driver Agent?

Quote

What do you mean? You don't KNOW, what Windows version you had, and you don't know what version you just installed? Did you use Windows CD, or...?

Your best bet is to go to Dell's web site, enter your computer service tag, and you'll get all drivers, you need.I just mean the way Windows is displaying looks different from the way it displayed when I first got my computer. There aren't nearly as many applications and nothing seems to work the same way.

I just went to the Dell website and it seems they have 40 drivers for Windows XP available for my system. If I download them to my work computer then copy them to my jump drive, is it as simple of attaching my jump drive to my home computer, opening up the drive and clicking on each exe file? You can buy a lan to usb cable. Belkin makes one. costs about 25-30 bucks. You hook up your internet lan line on one end and plug the usb in your computer. Run the usb drivers that come with the package and you'll be connected to the internet and download to your hearts content. Yes.

After you have all of your drivers installed, go to windows update and download all of the available updates for your machine. You will have to keep restarting after each round of updates. Keep going back until it quits finding updates for your machine.

The very next thing you should do is install an antivirus program.

As for your applications, you have lost them
You will need your program disks to reinstall. Quote

Don't install them all. Go to Device Manager, and look for YELLOW "?", and "!" marks. Install drivers for those devices only. Quote from: r_poisson on October 18, 2008, 10:55:20 PM

Not to sound silly or nothing but why should they buy a 30 dollar cable when they can just DLoad the drivers and save them to a flash drive ? ?

Or are you on commission

Your information is not enough. Provide us more infomationAnd it has locked your capslock key as well...

To fix this problem, you have two options. The first one would be to simply uninstall the screen saver. Once that is done the error will go away.

The second option is for those of you who simply cannot bear to part with your screen saver and is a bit more involved.

What you will need to do is find the flash9.ocx file and copy it as flash.ocx.

To do this, browse to the C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash folder. Locate the flash9.ocx file and right click it and select copy. Now just right click in a blank spot of the same folder and select paste. You will then find you have a file called Copy of Flash9.ocx in the folder. Right click the new file and select rename and change the name to flash.ocx.

Once COMPLETE, the error should be HISTORY.

Kudos to Jay Lee.

The issue is with your screensavers...installed any new ONES lately ?

Solve : Dropped Laptop, No Sound?

Answer»

Okay so I recently dropped my computer by accident. (Actually it was hardly a drop, maybe a foot drop)

But anyways, I looked and nothing was noticeably wrong with it, until I tried to listen to SOMETHING. There was no sound. Then I tried to put my headphones in and realized that the headphones input thing was JAMMED INSIDE of the computer.

So I was wondering if anyone could tell if this is common. Do you know hat happened to it? Would I be able to fix it or would I need to take it to a shop? How much would it cost?

THANKS for any help!So the earphone jack came apart?

If so, fixing it may not be so easy.

If the laptop is still under warrant, you can still get it fixed for free.

Solve : After reformat of HD no display!!!!?

Answer»

Hello all, just looking for a little bit of help with an extra computer of mine. A friend gave it to me and it was built for him so it's not from the factory. WELL I wanted to reformat the HD so I could get all his stuff off of it, I have a Windows XP disc I was going to install, it already had XP. Well I went through the reformat fine but after that the computer will turn on but wont show any video. I'm sure it's the driver to the video card but I don't know what to do since I can't see anything, just wondering if anyone out there could help me. I'm pretty sure I'll have to take it somewhere to get fixed but thought I should try this first, thanx, ChuckIs Windows installed? What version?Yup, well it was installed before the reformat, but yes it was XP SP2Is Windows installed NOW?
How did you format HD?I imagine its on there now, I wanted to install XP Pro so I booted up from the disk, I deleted partitions then formatted, but after the format thats when the display stopped working, well about 2 minutes after that anyway, I figured with the generic video driver I wouldn't have a problem but that's not the case, unless it didn't have a generic video driver but it should, I don't know, something is going on What did you use to format HARD drive?
You need to install Windows to see anything.I had XP home edition on it these are my steps:
Inserted cd into cd drive
rebooted computer
cd booted and windows setup screen appeared
had the option to format HD & delete partitions
i chose delete partitions
made a new partition - and formatted it
after that the monitor went BLANK, the pc is still running but no display
what should've HAPPENED after the formatting was the installation of XP pro, but I don't know if that happened because I have no display
I hope this helps, and maybe I went about it the wrong way but these are the instructions I had, it's been a while since I've done it so I might've screwed something up
Oh another thing, it kept popping up (before I did anything to it) that this version of windows isn't genuine, I don't know if that was something, but that was my whole reasoning for putting a new XP pro onto itIt looks like you did OK.
Is your Windows CD legit?
Did you check monitor cable?
Is monitor light on?

What happens if you Right Click the taskbar and uncheck LOCK the Taskbar.
Look for any vertical lines/dots and drag them side to side. The right side is the Taskbar...for any programs that are running or launched at Startup.
The left side is the Quick Launch bar which if there are duplicates you can simply right click the ICON and select DELETE.
This does not delete the program or any files just the Quick launch shortcut.
Any Program can be placed there by creating a SHOTCUT to it and dragging and dropping it there...very HANDY.

Solve : *Please Help* Windows Media Sharing problem?

Answer»

I have been sharing media between my Xbox360 and my PC for some time now with no problems what so ever. Two Weeks ago I noticed that my library in Windows Media Player 11 had disappeared and a day or so later My Xbox could not detect my PC anymore. When I try to add any files to the library nothing happens and if I go to Media Sharing it gives me this MESSAGE "Media sharing has been turned off because a required Windows setting or component has changed" I have TRIED all the web help options that the Microsoft website offers such as restarting the WMP sharing service. After countless WMP11 uninstalls and reinstalls along with system restores to before the problem started I am hopeless. If anyone has encountered this problem before or has any idea of why this is happening please reply. thanks!Remove WMP 11 and put things back the way they were. I have not tried this myself, but other people on other forums are saying that it is the FAULT of the new WMP update.
As for me, I am USING WMP 6.4 and have no plans to update! thanks geek but i tried that and no cigar. and anything below WMP11 does not allow sharing. Does someone else have access to this machine regularly ? ?I had this same issue. UNINSTALLING and reinstalling will do nothing. I tried fooling with Windows Media Player on another user account on the same PC and had no issues, so I just created an additional account, titled Media. I set up my library within Windows Media Player (11) and was able so successfully share my media with my 360 once again. For S and G's I gave it an XBox 360 theme and now have my music and movies available on the 360 again.
