Solve : how windows execute crash reporter program?

Answer» HI!
ı have two program. Second one will be executed when first one crashed to send crash report but ı don't know how windows understand this crashing and how windows executes this second program when first one crashed.what should ı do to execute this two program CORRECTLY ?
thank for any HELP..Sorry but I don't understand. What exactly are you trying to do?
Can you explain it more detail?

First of all sorry for my english. It is not so good.
To explain well ,I want to use firefox program. while using firefox , if there is any fault , this program crashs and user see a error reporting screen. If user accept , crashreporting program sends an error report (I mean , Crashreporting.exe is executed ).
How do windows reliase that this firefox program crashed?? How do windows execute crashreporter.exe ? and the most importantly that how do I force windows to execute my error reporting program when my main program crashs??

I wish to be able to explain this time.. Quote
If user accept , crashreporting program sends an error report
You mean something like this?

If yes, I think I understand.yes certainly I mean like this. My error reporting program is similar that one but not the same. I want to know how windows realise that my main program crashed ? or How can I tell windows that "if my main program crash, you must execute my errorReporting program" ??Don't even bother with error reports. They won't help you in any way.I think Aydan wants to know how Windows knows a program is not responding......
Hmmm....

yes Carbon Dudeoxide ,i mean that. I am a trainee on the computer company and I must do this work. Please any one help me .I don't know how Windows detects it. I know that, if there is a program error and you are trying to end the program forcefully, a process called drwatson.exe is called up, I don't know how though...It just does.

Why is this important in what you do?Hi,

I dont know it is work but you may try it. You can write a batch FILE this batch file call your exe and than control the return value of this exe if this is not finish successfull you call your error reporter.

do your best,
good luck. Quote from: nighelf on September 02, 2008, 08:52:45 AM

Not sure where you came from but you can go ahead and start drwatson.exe yourself too.

Just go to Start --> RUN and type drwatson.exe and press Enter.
It will tell you if you have an error or not. (I just did it)

Solve : XP operating system?

Answer»

When I try to turn on my pc, I get the message "Operating System not found" .  The computer worked properly last week, but now that I have moved, this is what I get when I turn it on.  Any advice for making it work again?  My computer is an HP.Since you moved, maybe something GOT knocked out or unplugged.

I would open up the CASE (unplug the computer) and start disconnecting and reconnecting the cables on the Motherboard and to the Hard Drive.

If that doesn't work, you may want to LOOK here:

Solve : Error 0xc0000008 SecActMgrInitialization failed on wife's HP; won't turn on?

Answer»

I'm avoiding getting into the router software in fear of disturbing our whole, "system."
I don't want you to change anything.Just look around, if you can FIND that key.
Agreed.
Besides, company this evening; they are leaving tomorrow.

One thing to remember is that because of your help the laptop is running just fine, again.  This problem is just a post-recovery nuisance.

DennisI like EVERYTHING to be solved....LOLBack again.
First, while I had some, "down time," I dug out my MS XP SP2 disk I had MicroSoft send me in the past.  Not having the laptop working yet on an internet connection, this way I was able to load SP2  while I was out of ideas about fixing the connection problem.

SP2 seems now to do a little better job of showing various windows for dealing with my connection.  So I went back and re-tried everything I had done before.  No luck.  I can still CONNECT to the router, I just cannot send/receive data.

I looked in my leaflets that came with my D-Link hardware.  I found the section where the network key is built and noticed my handwritten note to type in the key, but no key noted.  On a hunch, I typed in, "admin," for user AND password.  It worked.  So both I and the ISP installer had never created a password.  (And I still have not).  So now I tried everything again, including powering down the router, etc., and bringing them back up.

No luck.

So I have made progress but have yet to solve the problem of wireless TRANSMISSION and reception.

I don't have any new ideas at the moment.

DennisI just checked your post #30 about ipconfig, and it looks to me like there is something wrong with your laptop IP address.
Go here: http://www.hotcomm.com/FAQ/FAQ_staticIPXP.asp
and look at Assign the IP address paragraph to see how to change IP address...
In second image:

force your laptop to Use the following IP address ('tick" that option)
Your IP, and Gateway address should read:
192.168.0.1 (BTW another mystery here is why your other computer reads 192.168.2.1, since it's not D-Link, but Belkin address)
Leave Subnet mask the same: 255.255.0.0

Check also your other computer for this entry:
IP routing enabled...............Yes
This setting on my computer is set to NoJust did that.  Inserted IP addy and left subnet mask as it was.

Checked my IP rounting enabled with the cmd line and it was already set to , "no."

Restarted laptop.  Acted, again, like it was working to the router, but when I clicked in Internet Explorer, it hesitated, then brought up the same window, "no current connection available."

Try both numbers: 192.168.2.1, 192.168.0.1Also, if you have a FRIEND with laptop, try your card in there. Maybe something wrong with card itself.FIXED.

I've been busy; just not on this forum.  I did a lot of scratching around.  Called my ISP yesterday.  They said the radio system I'm on assigns an address for us.  Then my router assigns an address, (or I assign it).  Then the separate computers within our home have addresses.  First, we disabled the encryption, (we live miles out in wheat fields and that kind of security is not important to me at this point). We still had trouble getting communication of data between laptop and router, just as you, Broni, were aware of.  They asked to see the laptop when we went into town today.  Once there, he said it appeared that D-Link and Windows were both trying to set up communication.  Frankly, I don't know what all he did, but he did re-assign an IP address to 192.168.200.101, and it worked.

So I'm up and running.  Downloading Grisoft AVG as I type this.

Thank you Broni, for all your courtesies and help.

DennisGreat!!! Super news!!!I ran into this one too.  If you have a HP computer and Windows XP tries to automatically install SP3, you will have this problem too.  What you need to do is go to HP website and download and install a patch before you install service pack three to avoid this.  Try restoring your computer to an earlier time before SP3.

Solve : Freezes @ welcome.?

Answer»

hi,

so i have an acer desktop, windows xp, 512 mb, 160 gb, and generally run norton once a week.

lately my computer freezes on start up, right at the welcome screen before the desktop even loads. the fan sounded like a dying seal, so i opened it up and everything was disgustingly dusty. after a good cleaning, it no longer sounds like it's dying, but it is still freezing at the welcome screen. i am totally at a loss.

any ideas? i am fairly CLUELESS when dealing with computers, so any input would be totally appreciated!

oh, and when it goes thru the disk check it  says
"\program files\common files\symantec shared\SNDF.log first allocation unit is not valid. the entry will be truncated."

/thanks so much! Are you sure about spelling of this: SNDF.log?
Can you boot into Safe Mode?hm, i am fairly certain that the spelling was correct, i can definitely check again though.

when loading safe mode this comes up

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\fonts\vgaoem.fon
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\apppatch\drvmain.sdb

... and then it eventually loads in safe mode.
You may have a problem with your hard drive...
While in Safe Mode, go Start>Run, and type in:
chkdsk /f
Click OK.hm, it says

chkdsk cannot run because the VOLUME is in use by ANOTHER process. would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (y/n)

should i say yes and restart?thanks so much for the help, btw. Quote

should i say yes and restart?
Go ahead.disk check on restart said that there were no problems, but it still froze at the welcome screen. Have you been using any cleaning PROGRAMS, lately?

Do you have separate video card, or on-board?

Also, restart in Safe Mode with Networking, download, and install SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php, and post computer temps, along with processor info.

hi there,

sorry for the delay. i'm having problems connecting to the internet. i recently switched internet providers, and my computer was down when the tech came so he couldn't install the internet. it seems to be a problem with the router, a whole other ISSUE that i should be able to fix with more time.

the video card is on board

processor is AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+
2.21 Ghz

i don't think i'd been using any cleaning programs. in all honesty, the computer stopped working about a month ago, i hadn't done anything to fix it out of laziness.

as soon as i get the temps i'll post them. thanks so much! That's fine. Take your time...

Solve : How to set up shared folders??

Answer»

I want to set up shared folders between a laptop and a PC. They both run Windows XP, and they share the same NETWORK connection.Right click the folder and select properties, then choose the sharing tab NEAR the top.
Now click on the "share this folder on the network" box to place a check MARK there.
Now click Apply. And will it automatically connect with the other PC?? Or how does that work?If you have never shared folders before, the Network setup Wizard might run (been a while since I did this). Just pick the options you want and then finish. You will get some options like: use CD to configure other computers or create floppy etc...
Choose to exit the Wizard WITHOUT creating disks
Like I said it's been awhile since i did this.

Now you will have to run the wizard on the other computer.
Just go to the Control Panel and select Network and Internet connections and run the  Network setup wizard. But the network is already set-up so, why do I NEED to do that?Well, if the network is already set up then you can just share the files.

Solve : Service Pack 3 for XP?

Answer»

Okay so right now I am downloading Service Pack 3 on my desktop.  The window pops up saying downloading, then the green bar fills all the way up after 15 minutes, then CLEARS out, then says downloading still, with no progress (says 0% in toolbar).  Did I mess something up?Hard to tell from here

A typical SP3 DOWNLOAD is 60 - 70 MB, up to about 120 MB, I think. I ended up canceling, I will try again tomorro.  waited for a while longer and still NOTHING.  O well, not in any rush to update....

Solve : Low on virtual memory -?

Answer»

Win 2000 Pro, IBM clone desktop PC, rather old. Main board came with 256K ram; I added another 256 about 2 years ago; for the last few months I have been getting the "Low on virtual MEMORY" notice once or twice a day. Any way to correct this - say with more RAM or anything? Tnx. Dixieflash, computer illiterateAlthough more RAM may be nice, you can remedy this by increasing the Page File.

However, before you do this, it would be nice to know your Hard Drive Capacity and Free Space (and if you have any other drives/partitions or not)

From here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826513
Quote

Windows 2000
1.   Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2.   In the System Properties dialog box, click Advanced
3.   Click Performance Options.
4.   In the Virtual memory pane, click Change to increase the paging file.

Windows 2000 requires an Initial value of 126 MB for debugging.
5.   After you change the setting, click Set, and then click OK.
6.   In the System Control Panel APPLET dialog box, click OK to the following message:
The changes you have made require you to restart your computer before they can take effect.
7.   Click OK to close the Performance Options dialog box, and then click OK to close the System Properties dialog box.
8.   When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
Okay, BEFORE I try that remedy, the computer hard drive is 40 GB, of which 20GB is unused. Thanks for your response. DixieflashOk, I don't see any harm increasing the Virtual Memory/Page File. (at least for now to see if it solves the problem)

What is it set at right now?I did what you said - VM was set on 192 - I upped it to 292 and will let it restart when the notice comes up. Tnx, C Dude. DixieflashIt was set to 192mb?

I would set it up to 500mb and see how your system performs.

Mine is currently set to 1524mb.  Upped it again, to 384, which it says is maximum. Guess my old computer is a plow horse and yours is a race horse! Tnx for the help. DixieflashDon't forget to post back with a status update. Well, 384 isn't much but it is 2X what I had so I guess it will work better. If I continue to have a problem I will re-post. Until then, thanks again for your help. DixieflashAll right. GOOD Luck!

Solve : Explorer.exe / BROWSEUI.dll - high cpu usage (slow folders)?

Answer»

Ever since I came back to the computer and noticing that it had rebooted itself (presumably a STOP error of some kind), Explorer.exe has been utilising 37-50% cpu when browsing through folders (i.e the spikes occur only when activiley browsing). I was using addons (QTTabBar and QTAddressBar) for explorer.exe but have since removed them, although the cpu error persists. Naturally, the CPU spike causes folders to load slowly, they take about 5 seconds to appear, in contrast with the former 0-1 seconds.

For further clarity; right-clicking folders/files and running applications does not produce a CPU spike at all.

Just to prove that explorer is the culprit, I tried other file managers and they loaded folders instantly and with 0-1 % CPU usage.

I did troubleshooting all night and found that there are some strange occurrences when I open any given folder, though the activites differ slightly from folder to folder.

Basically, BROWSEUI.dll!Ordinal138+0x7bdd is the one hogging the cpu. The CSwitch Delta peaks at around 3000 when the cpu spikes occur.

Here's the stack for one of the BROWSEUI.dll!Ordinal138+0x7bdd:

What I have tried so far, without luck:
1. Kill all processes and services except the crucial ones
2. Search for references in the registry
3. Reinstalled IE7 (since browseui.dll is a IE component). The reinstall gave me a newer version of browseui.dll, but that didn't help, apparently.
4. Searched for spyware and adware. Didn't bother search for virus since I use a resident guard which hasn't reported anything.

What I perhaps should try:
Unregister browseui.dll , reboot, then reregister browseui.dll
I'm not sure I should. I'm afraid it'll break explorer.exe, but if you feel like coaxing me into trying this, feel free to do so.

Final notes:
1. I will not reformat or reinstall XP. With my last computer I didn't reformat for 2-3 years, and I'd like to keep it that way. (just getting this out of the way so we can focus on ironing out the problem )
2. The disk is defragmented. I am using Diskeeper with auto-defrag.
3. I can provide full Filemon, Regmon, Procmon or HJT logs if necessary (or any other log program).I'd try few things:
1. Download, and install ShellExView: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
Open it. CLICK on Type column to sort all entries.
Right click, and Disable all non-Microsoft Context Menu types entries.
Restart computer, and see, if it helps.
2. Run sfc /scannow
3. Windows repair: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmthanks for replying, however I seem to have located the problem myself.

I had recently disabled Spybot from within Spybot itself, without it affecting performance. Now I disabled it from within IE, which seemed to have solved the problem.

I will return if the problem re-arises.
Cool

Solve : Registry issue with file extension?

Answer»

For some reason my file EXTENSION .asp got corrupt (was no longer associated)...
Going to my explorer - Tools - Folder Options - File Types, does not let me add it for some reason....
I click New add the info, associate my program with it, but nope... it simply does not work..
So I thought Registry...
SEARCHED there for it and found: My Computer\HKey_Classes_Root\.asp

When I click on it I get the error: Cannot open .asp: Error while opening key
So I though, maybe a permission issue.. Right clicked on it and there it shows:
Unable to display security information...

Trying to DELETE it also does not work...

So the question is:
How can I associate my .asp with my program again and/or solve the above issue?
Have you tried changing it in safe mode ? ?
To get to safe mode tap F8 repeatedly as the machine is booting and before you see the Windows splash screen...First off all Patio: Thank you for your fast reply!

Second:
For years I have been helping others with their pc issues... Many, many times I have told them "start in safe mode, blah blah"
Here I am having a small tiny issue, post my question and Patio comes along, ASKING me:  "have you tried in safe mode?"

So ok, I now FEEL like a total dumba$s!  haha
I guess I was to involved with the issue to think about it....

Thanks for the help Patio, it got of cos solved

Don't feel bad...sometimes the solution is right in front of us.
Happens to all of us .

thankyouI dont think this is possible, because....

The computer doesnt know what time it is when it is not turned on.... Therefore it wont know when to turn on.my pc used to do it before ..when it was not SUPPOSED to mind..but it still did itAre you sure the PC wasnt in Sleep Mode? Can't you just get it to scan when you go to bed?

That's what I do.
Kaspersky has an option to turn the computer off when it is done scanning. Quote

The computer doesnt know what time it is when it is not turned on.
This is not true. That's why you have CMOS battery.

As for TURNING computer on automatically, some BIOSes will allow it. It's called "WAKE On RTC (Real Time Clock)" Quote

Solve : Windows close on their own, computer restarts?

Answer»

Yeah, it seems that switching the page file from my C drive to my D drive has solved everything. No blue screens (YET), applications don't RANDOMLY CLOSE when other programs are OPEN. GOOD.

Solve : Several bad things happening?

Answer» Hi everyone
MY PROBLEMS (PC that is) don't know if its PC or other related

Browser shuts down for no known reason and usually restarts. Sometimes it sticks one the Gateway page The one w/ bios f2, I think that's what is says
Only other thing on pg is Pentium Logo. If it freezes here I can only turn on and off the PC and eventually it will boot and go to windows. Tried waiting different times between turning off and on and makes not difference. Clean out the dust inside case (it needed it) left side of case off and pointed fan at it
thinking overheating my be cause, but nothing has changed.

On some sites I go to there will only be a blank browser with done in left LOWER bar and correct URL in top. Refresh (sometimes several times) and get to a code page and have to refresh again and it may take to the destination or back to  blank page, anyway refreshing usually gets me where I' going but
sometimes it happens as continue to navigate the site. Some times I just give up for the day. The site it happens most on  is a legit site and they can find no fault on their end. This can also happen on other sites and does from time to time.

A lot  of Error messages (... encountered a problem and has to close...) with firefox, IE and WMPlayer.

Also get ... system has recovered from a serious error....

I leave it own at night (turn off once or twice a week) and now the standy by does not work. I come in in the AM and it still on. Manually doesn't work either. I've tried changing settings etc. and nothing works - I' at a loss (but I'm also techinally challenged!)

CA is my real time protection. Also use spybot, malewarebytes, Pitstop and CC Cleaner and windows defenders.
I don't have any idea if I'm in the right forum but maybe someone will see a red flag and point me in the right direction.
Log is below with other info.
Thanks for what you folks do!!!!!  Glenn Holmes

 Ran Malwarebytes it found nothing
I run CC cleaner regularly
I run Pc ptistop regularly
CA for realtime protection

Please, post some computer info: processor type/speed, RAM amount, hard drive size/free space.

What browser are you using? Did you try different browser?

Get SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php, and post your computer temps.

We'll go from there.I could not download SpeedFan the same page
would just reload. Tried IE and firefox.

Broni

Windows XP Media Center Edition version 2002 SP2
Gateway 817GM Intel(R) Pentium(r) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
504 MB of Ram  Local disk (C:) File System NTFS Free Space 164 GB Total size 181

I use firefox latest and IE 7 only when something
does not work with firefox, mostly text editors'
color pickers. Plus IE is  slower.

PS Looks like my problem is intermittent as I just went
to one of the sites that I usually have to reload constantly
to navigate worked perfectly and fast both on IE and firefox
and IE
GlennOne thing, I noticed, your hard drive is getting full. Windows, to operate correctly needs 15% of a free space. 27MB in your case. You have 17MB.
You should free some space.Hi Broni

Sorry about the delay, I turned off computer and it froze on opening page when I turned it back on.  The page where is says gateway and PRESS F? for bios. I had to use another computer since then and I had no record of the forum. Sorry. I finally got it back  on by turning it on and off. When it freezes on that opening page nothing works F5 or ctrl+alt + delete. I can only repeately turn off and on.

How about ram? Do I need more?  The problem with blank browser is very intermittent and it's liable to happen on any site.

One more hint, over a 2 or 3 day period the fan will get going pretty good, so I guess that means too much heat. If I restart it goes back to almost silent. I afraid to turn it off because of the freezing when I turn it back on.

PS
I have 164 GB of Free Space.
Local disk (C:) File System NTFS Free Space 164 GB Total size 181

Thanks and sorry for the delay
GlennCan you boot without a problem into Safe Mode?
Did you try to download SpeedFan?
I cannot download speedfan, I tried everything but the link will not load.

When I turn on computer if it freezes at the gateway page I can do nothing but turn it off and on till it boots. When it finally goes past the gateway page I could probably get into safe mode.

Another hint I may not have mentioned: I am very slow while doing things offline, like MS Works word loads very slow. Clearing history and such in firefox is slow. Sometimes
when I hit start the menu loads from the ctr of the page and goes down, same with other pages.  Websites load fast as normal.

Thanks Glenn Quote
I could probably get into safe mode.

Solve : verclsid.exe please help me understand this possible threat??

Answer»

ok in other words, does anyone have an idea why my monitor is crashing? (best way i can DECRIBE it without being foulmouthed) my mouse will freeze,my comp beeps once, then the screen goes black, so i have i to reboot just to get my screen back, even though im pretty sure everythiing else is still running, acts like if it went into standby, the light goes orange and so on. and after many frustrating reboots i caught that verclsid .exe an one other exe i wasnt  able to get quick enuff, in my task manager im pretty upset about what could be happening . is this the cause ........its XP home,sp2 ...........im new i dont know what  else to say bout it  that will help..
any HELP would be greatly  appreciated........
~always truly PUNK~According to Google:

Verclsid.exe is a PROCESS belonging to Windows XP Operating System. validates shell extensions before they are instantiated by the Windows shell or by Windows Explorer. This program is a non-essential system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

Does this problem still happen in Safe Mode

How long has it been happening?well ihad some  electricity problems , and yeah i googled it to  and figured u guys wood b much more helpfull..but long story short, electricity got turned off..when it came bck on my mother turned off my comp properly but i guess it downloaded some updates .. so u see why im LOST
and olny a day at most
i THOUGHT my monitor had finally just died but..i dunno doesnt seem right to me
if that makes an sense to u Hmmmm.....

Firstly, go to Device Manager and look for any Yellow Question Marks or Exclamation Marks.

Then I would try another monitor.

Does the computer still 'shut down' in Safe Mode?no yellow markers or conflicts i can see... havent tried safe mode yet, DIDNT think it would help in this case
i thought the monitor also, untill i saw it pop up in my task manager, and googled it
i thought maybe id get more specific info bout it from here
so it isnt  a essential as far as u know right?

If I were you, I would leave it.....at least for now.

You mentioned in your previous topic something about being on for 20 minutes and then 'shutting down' to some sort of low power STATE?
no lol not a low power state.. it freezes, beeps, and goes black, so i have to restart just to get the screen back. eractically..20 minutes 3 times in 20 minutes,
its been ok so far for about an hour  tho  so who knowsStrange...

If you want, you might want to post a HijackThis Log over in the Computer Virus and Spyware Section for the Malware Specialists to have a look at. (post a link to this topic as well for reference)

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthisive never  done that before
i have to download it first or something dont i?
sorry.. i feel pretty stupid atm
dont laugh at me lol  Lol, yep.
Download it, install it, scan the computer, copy from notepad, paste into topic.

Solve : Restoring a hard drive partition??

Answer»

Hi,

I have a 100gb hard drive that has been partitioned, but I want to restore the partitioned area BACK.

So one partition is 80gb and assigned to drive letter G.  The other partition is 20gb and assigned letter H.

How do I get the 20gb partition back to the G drive, so it gets to its original 100gb size.  Do I simply go to disk management and delete the 20gb partition?

ThanksYou will need to use a third-party partition manager which has the capability to join two partitions into one WITHOUT loss of data.  One such program is Paragon Partition Manager.

Such programs are regularly given away for free on computer magazine dvd's and you can SURELY also download them on the net, if you have broadband, EVEN if only on a trial basis.  LONG enough to do what you need!

Beware of using freeware or shareware partition managers.  There are no good ones.  Stick with a reputable name brand.OK.  I'll give it a go.

Solve : Cannot Delete File?

Answer» HELLO all,

I've had a pesky file on my computer for a few days now in the form of a JPG image, that a friend sent me. Upon opening the picture in Windows Picture Preview (or something of that sort) there no image displayed. I figured it got messed up some how but when I dragged it to the trash can nothing happened. I tried selecting it and pressing delete, nothing. No error messages about access denied or anything, just wouldn't respond. I tried dragging it into a folder and then DELETING the folder, wouldn't go into the folder. I can't even change the name of the file. I seriously have no idea what to do.

I've:

*Dragged, dropped to trash can

*Pressed "Delete"

*Tried deleting through Command Prompt

*Tried "unlocking" it (ending any programs it may be connected to)

*Using Various delete file programs

ANY help would be seriously appreciated,

Thanks in advanceYou could always download and TRY unlocker. It's well recommended on this BOARD by some members.
http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/That's actually the same program I tried to use. I right click and the only options are:

Preview
Edit
Print
Open With
Send ToThat happens to me when I right click a file a temp. folder. Is that where the file is?Nope, the file is just sitting on my desktop. You said you can only preview, edit, print, open with and send when you right click. How did you try to rename it? What OS are you using? Can you see what the properties are? Have you RESTARTED the computer?

Have you tried Safe Mode?

Solve : Missing vmm32.vxd?

Answer»

I'm trying to install Windows 98SE on an old Dell computer.  400khz processor, 64mb RAM.

After several restarts, the Windows 98 splash screen appears, then the screen GOES black and I'm INFORMED that the computer can't boot because the dmm32.vxd file is missing from the Windows system folder, and that I should restart the machine.

When I restart the machine, I can start in safe MODE.  When I GO to the system file CHECKER to extract the missing file,, the computer will not recognize my CD drive.

Checking the dmm32 folder with Windows explorer, it is indeed empty.

Any suggestions on how to get all the files to install? Try here: http://www.easydesksoftware.com/news/news10.htmHave a great vacation!

I do have some CD backups of files from way back - and possibly may have some from my 95 days anyways - OSR2c.

If you think or others think that file might be common to 95 and 98 then I'll do some digging and try and supply the file for you.vmm32.vxd is pretty nasty error, but not uncommon with Win 98.
Have a nice vacation

Solve : When booting up screen goes black?

Answer»

I bought a 2-yr old computer running Windows Xp from a business after it had been wiped clean. When i FIRST booted it up my screen resolution was 640 x 480 i was unable to change it and retardedly thought uninstalling though display driver would help. Now when I start up I see the Windows Xp loading screen then the screen goes black. I have tried booting in safe mode but my screen fills up with lines of text and won't load. The LAST line of text on the screen is Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys

thanksIt's highly likely the boot sector of the hard drive is either damaged or corrupt.

Was the operating system already installed...or did you install it?

Do you have the CD?

You may want to attempt a repair of the operating system.

Any files on it that need to be BACKED up?It came with the operating system already installed and I don't have any files on there. I don't have the CD either. You need to power down and try to load in safemode again...
Only this time let it finish loading.
If it has not been run before or in a long time it can take upwards of 12 minutes...

Grab the Adult Beverage of your choice.

You will eventually need an XP CD...everyone does sooner or later.ok thanks for the help i think i'm TAKING this one into the shop. It's too much for me to figure out

Solve : Administrator Password for XP Windows Repair from XP Recovery Console?

Answer»

I have an old HP which was powered off during a system restore by a careless user.  I have his XP CD, and started the Recovery Console with no problems.  However, I'm prompted for an Administrator Password.  I tried enter, and I tried admin, but the system says those are incorrect passwords.  Can anyone help - please - soon - please?  Thanks.Your best bet...other than a clean install would be to start here:  Forgot Administrator PasswordThanks very much, Saviour.  I've sent the encrypted password to loginrecovery.com - and I guess I'll wait the three days to get the free decryption service.  I'll be very interested to see if that works.  I'll post results here Monday, assuming I do get the decrypted info.

Thanks again. You're welcome...please, do keep us posted...For Saviour:

Sorry this took so long.  The loginrecovery.com site posted the administrator decrypted password (BLANK), just as promised, after exactly 72 hours.  Unfortunately, this didn't work, as I suspected would be the case, since there was no reason for a password to be there.  I was able to read both the system partition, and the recovery partition, of the affected machine, by booting from the Windows CD.  I tried a new bootloader file, and a new MBR file, but to no avail.  It appears that I will have no choice but to reinstall Windows (from a new copy purchased by the user, since he failed to acquire, or build, the Recovery disks for his 4 year old HP machine).  After that, I suppose I'll get an inventory of the machine using Belarc Adviser, and try to locate DRIVERS for his various hardware devices.

I would appreciate any alternative suggestions.Have you tried slaving his drive and scanning it for infections (malware)?

This may be the best alternate route you have...and could also be the culprit.Saviour:
Yes - I set his drive up as a slave in one of my machines, and determined that the drive was mechanically okay.  I did not scan the drive for malware (since the user had confessed he pulled the plug in the middle of a Windows System Restore; and because I was concerned with trying to repair his installation).  However, as a precaution prior to attempting repair, I used Tru-Image software to make an image of both the system and recovery partitions.  Right now, I'm installing a new copy of  Windows on the system partition, leaving the recovery partition alone.  My thought is, if I can get the thing to boot from the system drive, I may be able to invoke HP's System Recovery mechanism, and at least put the user back to the point of purchase.  Your suggestion, however, appears to be a good one.  When I have time, I'll scan the original files, which I have already copied from the Tru-Image backup to an EXTERNAL hard drive here.  If you're interested, I'll post results of all this.
Thanks for your suggestion.

Update:  windows installed without incident.  However, the plan to use HP's System Restore was not to be.  When I press the appropriate execution KEY during the boot process, nothing happens.  So, looks as though the user is going to be stuck with an expensive lesson in what he should have, and should not have, done. Why not contact HP for the recovery software...if any.  Maybe explain to them the recovery partition was damaged before the recovery cd could be made.

Hopefully, they could send you the recovery software...much cheaper than purchasing the XP cd itself.Disregard my LAST post...he's already purchased the CD...Well - that was my first step in this process.  HP advised they only kept the disks or whatever for a couple of years, and this machine is 4 years old.  My hope was that HP had built into the BIOS some means of recognizing the user's pressing of the F10 key at a particular point early in the boot cycle, and launch the recovery program from the recovery partition.  But I suppose that it's more likely that program was part of the system drive installation.

This user - like so many computer users who call me, never looked at his system documentation, or at least he didn't look at that section which dealt with making or ordering recovery disks, until it was too late.  Personally, I think it's criminal for box makers to ship PCs without a reinstallation disk.  How much could that cost?  And how many persons would at least have an opportunity to recover from a calamitous event if they only had reinstallation disk(s).

Solve : Win2kPro WINNT boot issue?

Answer»
I installed (or should say tried to install) an ext HP CD Writer. I've done this countless times before with my computers, yet this time it LOCKED up both "identical" Win2k machines that I tried to install it to.....

I simply uninstalled the HP CD Writer software THRU Add/Remove and the very NEXT boot caused a lock up at the Windows splash screen - on BOTH machines. About 75% through the process. Online, many folks have gone through this, yet there was no solution that worked.

One machine simply fixed itself. The other did not. I tried various things to fix it, including comparing WINNT\setup.log and drvindex.inf files to make them identical on both machines. No help.

I finally resorted to using the Win2k install CD and selected the automatic "repair" option. There were SO many files that the program said were not 'native' (my word) to this distro of Win2k... So I selected the repair all option.

Now I'm getting the BSD message:

"Stop: c0000263 {DriverEntryPointNotFound}  The \system root\system32\drivers\fltmgr.sys driver couldn't locate the entry point IoGetDeviceAttachmentBaseRef in driver ntoskrnl.exe"

Thanks in advance for everyone's help.Strangely enough it sounds like a corrupt driver issue but how that would appear on 2 systems at the same time is beyond me...
Try re-installing the chipset drivers from the MBoard CD.
Remove the device completely including physically; from Control Panel/System/Hardware/ Device Manager and the software itself beforehand.

Good Luck.Patio, I thank you for the reply. I had a good idea that this was a fatal problem anyway.

My best workaround has been to install Win2k to a new root folder. This is not a final solution obviously, but I now have access to the entire machine again.
So now I can recover files and folders before nuking the C:\ and performing a true clean install...

Ironically, the only reason I was hooking up the burner was to make an Ubuntu CD. I'm hoping Linux (once I learn the ins and outs) will not be as problematic as Windows.......sure.

Yes, I've purchased a new DVD/CD burner. I'll see if it will install on the 'damaged' system before trying it elsewhere.

Final comment. I have used these machines with this HP burner for 7 years. But this year, I used a different Win2k distro. It was said to be a 'better' distro - and it has performed better up to now. So, either that is not the case, or the Windows Update hotfixes are an issue here.

Thanks again for the reply and I'm sure we will talk again... about my dual boot Linux/Win2k machine in a WEEK or so!!  Good News...
Just so you know if you visit Ubuntu's site they will ship up to 10 copies of the latest Distro for FREE.
Nice to have for safekeeping in case you get in a jam.
They include both a Live CD you can boot to and run and an install CD.

Good Luck ! And Welcome to CH !Patio,

As always, thanks for the helpful info! You had told me this in the past, and I WISH I'd taken your advice....I would have stayed out of this whole HP CD Writer mess!

On the other hand, I now have a state-of-the-art DVD/CD burner that works fine (so far), and I stumbled upon a great work around for those times when my machine won't boot up!

Blessings in disguise -  always a nice surpriseAs always you're more than Welcome !

Solve : XP shut down, now won't restart...help?

Answer»

Please...any advise would be great...

I was using my internet EXPLORER when it froze. I tried the ctrl-alt-del and that didn't work. I let it sit for 10 or so mins and nothing. I powered down the computer and restarted it. It comes back on, but brings up the screen letting me know that it was improperly shut down and that I need to pick a start up option (i.e. Normal MODE, Safe mode, etc). I have tried them all and WINDOWS will try to start up but then just continually go back to that screen.

I don't know what to do. Any ideas.....I also wanted to mention that I have not installed or updated any programs recently. I know that is ONE of the common causes. Do you have the Windows CD?

Solve : How to ECHO without a terminating CR/LF?

Answer»

One batch file creates text thus
ECHO "The First chunk of information" > TEXT.TXT

A second batch file subsequently appends with
ECHO "The Second chunk of information" >> TEXT.TXT

TYPE TEXT.TXT shows the two chunks on two separate lines.

Is there any convenient way to avoid the termination so that both chunks appear on a single line.

Alan

Not really but this solution is specific to your request:

Code: [Select]echo off
ECHO "The First chunk of information" > TEXT.TXT
set /p var=<text.txt
echo %var% "The Second chunk of information"

Thank you

Excellent solution that worked until I used it !!!
It has taken me most of today to devise a dirty workaround.
I would appreciate advise for a more elegant solution.

I have used 3 blocks of almost identical code, 5 lines per block.
The only difference are that Block 1 defines X2 and X3, 2 defines X4 and X5, 3 defines X6 and X7
Each block shows the X? defined up to that stage, and concludes with a line beginning "C: ; "

The first block is executed unconditionally - perfect.

The second block fails because it is subject to
IF 1==1 (
  code_block
)

The third block succeeds, and is subject to the "dirty" conditional
IF 1==2 GOTO SKIP
  code_block
:SKIP

After many years of high reliability programming in 'C', where use of GOTO was grounds for a reprimand and possibly the sack, I would much prefer to use the elegant "brackets" solution - even though it is the wrong sort of brackets and I still lapse into 'C' type {} instead of ().

I would also note that although the IF 1==2 GOTO SKIP solution is an grave offence to my sense of decency, it is not inconvenient to use as a single instance, but if I should ever need 100 blocks of conditional code it would be a nightmare having to define and correctly reference and jump to 100 different :SKIP2; :SKIP3; ... ; :SKIP 99; :SKIP100 ETC

I would greatly appreciate advice upon making use of variables within ( ) brackets.

I ran diagnostic code and captured this from the Command window :-

X2=C:
X3=15:52:23.53
DELAY 15:52:23.55 to 15:52:25.10
C: ; 15:52:23.53 ;  ;  ;  ;  ; 15:52:25.10
X2=C:
X3=15:52:23.53
X4=C:
X5=15:52:25.10
DELAY 15:52:25.12 to 15:52:26.62
C: ; 15:52:23.53 ;  ;  ;  ;  ; 15:52:25.10
X2=C:
X3=15:52:23.53
X4=C:
X5=15:52:25.10
X6=C:
X7=15:52:26.64
DELAY 15:52:26.66 to 15:52:28.17
C: ; 15:52:23.53 ; C: ; 15:52:25.10 ; C: ; 15:52:26.64 ; 15:52:28.18
Press any key to continue . . .

In the above, X3 shows Block 1 started at 15:52:23.53
A delay subroutine captured %TIME% before starting a 1.5 second delay and then echoed the captured time value and also the current %TIME% as 15:52:23.55 to 15:52:25.10

After this X5 shows Block 2 started at 15:52:25.10, then the DELAY routine ran from 15:52:25.12 to 15:52:26.62, after which C: ; 15:52:23.53 ;  ;  ;  ;  ; 15:52:25.10
demonstrating that although "SET X" could deliver X4 and X5, ECHO considered them undefined, whilst %TIME% was still stuck at 15:52:25.10, even though DELAY had already seen 15:52:26.62.

In the third block X7 correctly captured 15:52:26.64, 20 mSec after the last DELAY subroutine, the next DELAY ran from 15:52:26.66 to 15:52:28.17,
and the final line was echoed 10 mSec later at 15:52:28.18.  Also, please note that this line now shows the values X4 and X5 which were defined but unusable within block 2, and it also shows the values just defined for X6 and X7.

To summarise, within an IF 1=1 ( code_block ) region,
is it possible to ECHO %VARIABLE% that which has just been defined.

The code I used is shown below

Regards
Alan

ECHO OFF
ECHO %HOMEDRIVE%>K.TXT

SET /P X2=SET X3=%TIME%
SET X
CALL :DELAY
ECHO %X2% ; %X3% ; %X4% ; %X5% ; %X6% ; %X7% ; %TIME%

IF 1==1 (
SET /P X4=SET X5=%TIME%
SET X
CALL :DELAY
ECHO %X2% ; %X3% ; %X4% ; %X5% ; %X6% ; %X7% ; %TIME%
)

IF 1==2 GOTO SKIP
SET /P X6=SET X7=%TIME%
SET X
CALL :DELAY
ECHO %X2% ; %X3% ; %X4% ; %X5% ; %X6% ; %X7% ; %TIME%
:SKIP

PAUSE
GOTO :EOF

:DELAY
SET WAS=%TIME%
ping -w 40 -n 2 127.0.0.1 > nul
ECHO DELAY %WAS% to %TIME%

I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to acheive with the code but i'll give you my view on things...

ECHO OFF
ECHO %HOMEDRIVE%>K.TXT

SET /P X2=SET X3=%TIME%
SET X   --- set X will display all environment variables beginning with X so no need to echo.
CALL :DELAY
ECHO %X2% ; %X3% ; %X4% ; %X5% ; %X6% ; %X7% ; %TIME% -- %3% - %7% aren't defined yet.

IF 1==1 (   ----- why do you need the if 1==1? the code will execute without this... :S
SET /P X4=SET X5=%TIME%
SET X
CALL :DELAY
ECHO %X2% ; %X3% ; %X4% ; %X5% ; %X6% ; %X7% ; %TIME%
)

IF 1==2 GOTO SKIP  --- presumably i'm getting the wrong end of the STICK but if you don't want to run it. Don't write it. also putting this block into () won't run the code without the goto.
SET /P X6=SET X7=%TIME%
SET X
CALL :DELAY
ECHO %X2% ; %X3% ; %X4% ; %X5% ; %X6% ; %X7% ; %TIME%
:SKIP

PAUSE
GOTO :EOF  --- if you religiously don't like goto's then exit would suffice here.

:DELAY
SET WAS=%TIME%
ping -w 40 -n 2 127.0.0.1 > nul
ECHO DELAY %WAS% to %TIME%

FBThe short answer is that I am not having a problem with the comparison test but with the conditional delimiters.

I am not interested in 1==1 nor in 1==2
I am actually testing whether or not the command file was invoked with an argument, so the actual test I perform is    IF %1#==#

I was using code of the form
IF %1#==# (
  SET TIME0=%TIME%
  code_block
  SET T
  ECHO %TIME0% %TIME% >> Sys_Res!.ini
)
The conditional code above is followed by a set of code which extracts information from a start-up file and evaluates against a master copy to decide if I should be alerted to a start-up malfunction.  This extract / evaluate code additionally uses
SET ZZ1=%TIME%, SET ZZ2=%TIME% etc. to obtain time stamps at various stages, and finally
ECHO %ZZ1% %ZZ2% >> Sys_Res!.ini gives me a dump holding diagnostic time stamps.

I really want the conditional code block to also capture and dump diagnostic time stamps.  Unfortunately although SET T is able to find and display TIME0 together with its value, the subsequent ECHO command has nothing at all for %TIMEO%, and what it shows for %TIME% is actually a snapshot of a value FROZEN at the start of this condition code block.

After many hours today exploring how to use the advice by Sidewinder of
set /p var=I now realise that ( ) delimiters seem to be killing me whilst GOTO SKIP seems to do what I need in the "test demonstration" code I previously posted.

I would like to invoke or cancel delayed expansion or whatever it is that causes me problems within ( ) delimiters.   Not only would I consider it more elegant, BUT ALSO I have vague recollections of a similar problem when I wrote code of the form
FOR %%a in (F,G,H,I,J,K) DO (IF EXIST %%a:\ SET R=ON && ECHO At %TIME% Drive %%a:\ %R% >> T.txt )

Now for the long answer ( I am good at these, especially now I am retired.)

Genuine working code is :-

IF %1#==# (
  start "%~N0 %TIME%" /LOW /WAIT %~n0 %TIME%
if exist H:\ if exist K:\ START C:\PROGRA~1\zabkat\XPLORE~1\XPLORE~1.EXE
  ..\AUTOBACK.EXE C:\Windows\ERDNT\AutoBackup\#Date#_#Time# sysreg curuser otherusers
  EXIT
)
SET ZZ1=%TIME%
ping -w 40 -n 2 127.0.0.1 > nul
SET ZZ2=%TIME%
COPY C:\SYSTEM~1\_RESTO~1\DRIVET~1.TXT /Y
MORE C:\SYSTEM~1\_RESTO~1\DRIVET~1.TXT | FIND /V "C:\" > Sys_Res!.txt
FC Sys_Res!.txt Sys_Res!.cfg && goto HOP0
echo   ERROR   E   E   E   E   E   E   E   ERROR
set /p ANS="*.TXT and *.CFG mismatch. Update CFG ?  Y(es) / N(o) :"
if /I %ANS%#==Y# COPY Sys_Res!.txt Sys_Res!.cfg
:HOP0
DEL Sys_Res!.txt
COPY C:\SYSTEM~1\_RESTO~1\DRIVET~1.TXT *.INI /Y
ECHO %DATE% %1 TO # %ZZ1% # %ZZ2% # %TIME% >> Sys_Res!.ini
EXIT

The above is invoked when I double click on a short cut.  It is also invoked via the
Windows / All Programs / Startup when when I log in to the computer.
Either way, the program starts at NORMAL priority, and because it was launched with no argument %1 is not defined therefore the very first line conditional IF %1#==# is true, so line 2 is executed.

Line 2 runs this same program a second time, with the differences that :-
a) it is started at LOW priority, so that it sits back and waits gazillion seconds for the computer to go through any start-up procedures, and to ensure that System Restore has got around to looking at my external hard drive and has decided whether or not to honour my DEMAND that monitoring be TURNED OFF for all external partitions, or whether it is going ahead regardless of my wishes, and eventually System Restore posts its decision in the file C:\SYSTEM~1\_RESTO~1\DRIVET~1.TXT.
b) it is called with %TIME% as an argument so that for this second time around the first line conditional is no longer true - otherwise it would sit in an endless loop calling itself recursively until a stack overflows or something.

The second time around, at LOW priority, it proceeds from lines 7 through to 20 to create Sys_Res!.txt as a snapshot of what System Restore intends to do to MY external drive.  It then compares this snapshot with my desired configuration held in Sys_Res!.cfg, and if System Restore is disobeying orders it reports an ERROR condition and waits my decision, and this alerts me right at start-up whether I need to reimpose my requirements upon System Restore.  A significant amount of extra code defines variables that are used to append one extra line of diagnostics to the file Sys_Res!.ini.
After this the second time around is complete.

Only after the second time around has completed is the line 2 /WAIT parameter satisfied, then back at NORMAL priority the first time around invocation starts up a couple of programmes which originally were launched via Windows / All Programs / Startup - and then this code completes with a final exit.

The code originally worked perfectly for 100 start-ups WITHOUT the first 7 lines, but then Service Pack 3 struck,  and I was only 80% lucky - once in five start-ups System Restore failed to create C:\SYSTEM~1\_RESTO~1\DRIVET~1.TXT in time for my code to use it.  Lines 1 to 7 cured this perfectly.

I also noticed that the 6 icons in the notification tray (Clock, Volume, Safely Remove Hardware, etc. had a 98% chance of appearing on start-up before SP3, but only a 50% chance with SP3, and sometimes the ONLY icon was the Clock.  For this reason XPLORE~1.EXE and AUTOBACK.EXE have been removed from the frantic muddle at start-up, and deferred until after the system has settled down and established these icons.  This has significantly improved the start-up icon success rate.
I wish to append additional time stamp diagnostics to Sys_Res!.ini as the postponed AUTOBACK.BAT etc are launched, and this is my remaining problem which I now realise is due to the malevolent influence of the conditional delimiters ( ).

Yawnnow Merlin that's not very nice... though that is possibly the longest bit of prose i've read since being forced to read Romeo and Juliet at school... Your source code and objectives are far more complex than any i've come across but if it could be summed up in the following sentence: "how do i..." i would feel obliged to try and help.

FBFireballs, I really would appreciate help.

(
SET X2=22
ECHO %X2%
)
It does not work for me if it is within brackets, please tell me how to fix it, and all my problems go away.

I use the ( ) brackets to delimit a block of multiple lines of code.
I may use this block of code for :-
a) Conditional execution subject to IF [NOT] test ( code block );
b) FOR %%a IN (b,c) do (code block).

I find that any variable defined WITHIN that code block is only accessible AFTER that code block.

I have not yet mastered (or needed) "delayed expansion", so I could be wrong, but I suspect I am OBSERVING a "delayed expansion" EFFECT from ( ), and what I need is a way of UN-delayed expansion.

The test code produces this output :-

%a      X1="1111"       X2=""   X3=""   X4=""   X4=""
%a      X1="1111"       X2=""   X3=""   X4=""   X4=""
b       X1="1111"       X2="22" X3=""   X4=""   X4=""
c       X1="1111"       X2="22" X3=""   X4=""   X4=""
%a      X1="1111"       X2="22" X3="yc" X4="z"  X4="5555"
Press any key to continue . . .

What I want to see is :-
%a      X1="1111"       X2=""   X3=""   X4=""   X4=""
%a      X1="1111"       X2="22" X3=""   X4=""   X4=""
b       X1="1111"       X2="22" X3="yb" X4="z"  X4=""
c       X1="1111"       X2="22" X3="yc" X4="zyb" X4=""
%a      X1="1111"       X2="22" X3="yc" X4="zyb" X4="5555"
Press any key to continue . . .

The code which is responsible for the above is :-

ECHO OFF
SET X1=1111
ECHO %%a   X1="%X1%"   X2="%X2%"   X3="%X3%"   X4="%X4%"   X4="%X5%"
(
SET X2=22
ECHO %%a   X1="%X1%"   X2="%X2%"   X3="%X3%"   X4="%X4%"   X4="%X5%"
)
for %%a in (b,c) do (
SET X4=z%X3%
SET X3=y%%a
ECHO %%a   X1="%X1%"   X2="%X2%"   X3="%X3%"   X4="%X4%"   X4="%X5%"
)
SET X5=5555
ECHO %%a   X1="%X1%"   X2="%X2%"   X3="%X3%"   X4="%X4%"   X4="%X5%"

Delayed expansion doesn't do what you think. It means it's delayed from expanding when the code is started, instead it expands when the line of code is encountered. From the sounds of it this is what you need.

put this at the top of your code: Code: [Select]set enabledelayedexpansion and then when you use a variable that you want to be evaluated when it's time to execute that line rather than at start use ! instead of % eg.
Code: [Select](
SET X2=22
ECHO !X2!
)

This tells DOS to wait until the line ECHO !X2! is reached before evaluating X2 so the line above has the chance to assign it a value. Hope this helps.

FBThank you - almost a perfect solution.
It pointed me in the right direction and I then found it should not be
set enabledelayedexpansion   but
setlocal enabledelayedexpansion

And that is a perfect cure, thank you so much.

I previously encountered "delayed expansion" as something controlled by /V:ON etc. but was unable to do anything with it !!!

The world is beginning to make sense again

Regards, and many thanks
Alan
sorry i didn't notice that i'd left off the 'local'. The /v:on is an argument when calling cmd.exe

glad everything is making sense again

Solve : Control a PC from a different PC without remote software??

I've set up a PC running a database in a warehouse.  Occasionally the database encounters a problem (not very often).  I have a link to the PCs harddrive.  Is there anyway that I can close the database down on that PC and start it up again from my PC without using some kind of remote connection software?  I was thinking of just clicking a batch file to close the database and then reopen it, however if I run it from my machine it tries to close the database then reopen it on my machine, not the PC in the warehouse.

Any suggestions? Are both machines running XP? You can use RDP to do this.Excuse the ignorance but what is RDP and how do I use it?YES both machines are XPRDP is a good choice!

you can start it like this:

Solve : Sound does not work on windows xp?

Answer»

K, here is the problem.

I am pretty good with figuring things out with computers but this time I am confused. I troubleshot my system, looked on the net but I cannot figure this out.

Yesterday I was on my computer and left it on for my little bro. Came back and used the drum machine from: "http://andrewrudson.com/drummachine/main.php" and I still had sound. I went out for dinner, came back turned on my computer logged in, opened windows media player 11, but when I went to put on music, no sound worked.

So then I checked out to see if there were any hardware issue's none, updated drivers(maybe driver issue's) + windows media player(maybe there was a registry or file error) + reinstalled directx9c(directx error maybe) + windows update + checked to see if the speakers had been blown + Ran spybot S&D(spyware issue) + AD aware SE personal + Registry Mechanic + CCleaner + Easy Cleaner + Uniblue Speed up my pc + DEVICE manager(Look for any issues). There seemed to be no problem nothing worked to fix whatever was wrong.

So I went on the net to see maybe there was something on there that may help. It told me to do things I had already done. Then I got a great idea, last thing I did that involved sound was play the drum machine program. IT WORKED, but it uses directx and I already updated that.

I am lost can anyone help. PS.System restore didn't work either and reinstalling windows in outa the question.(I did that two MONTHS ago, I 'Upgraded' from vista.

Any help would be awesome school starts in a week and I don't wanna deal with it then. I have two math courses, computer science, and a writing course. I need my computer No Windows sound, no sound from CD, no Internet sound? Is that correct?
Windows XP?
Did you actually uninstall CURRENT sound driver, before installing new one?

Solve : Crash during Windows update... now can't start at all?

Answer»

This seems like a great FORUM.  I can't believe I've never stumbled across this before.

Here's my problem:
My computer, running Windows XP,  was running slowly - it seemed like it needed a reboot.  I also noticed it had Windows updates ready to be installed.  I don't know if that contributed to the sluggishness, but I FIGURED installing & rebooting was a good idea.

The Computer wouldn't shut down.  Some programs wouldn't close.  I closed, then quit, then force-quit everything I could.  I walked away.  I came back and it still didn't shut down.

So, I held the power button until it turned off.

I rebooted, but it wouldn't load Windows.

I can F12 for a boot menu, or F2 for setup, as usual
I can   for SCSI menu, as usual

Then, I get the Safe Mode options (I'm paraphrasing these options):
[
- Safe Mode
- Safe Mode w/ networking
- Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt
- Last known Good Config.
- Normal
]

Nearly every option leads to a scrolling of commands of different ".sys" files.
The only exception is choosing the "Last known good config". Unfortunately, that has the Windows XP load screen for a few seconds before it stops, too.

Then, no matter which option I choose,  I get the same Blue Screen that reads:
"A problem has been detected and Windows has benn shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your compluter.  If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Disable or unstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard DRIVE configuration, and check for any updated DRIVERS. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 867CB820, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)"

(I think I got that exactly right)

From this screen, I can't seem to do anything except hold the power button to try again.
I don't know how to get to a command prompt from here to run anything, nor disable/uninstall anything.

So, I'm stuck.
That's where I hope you can provide guideance.

Thank you very much in advance.

A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check the file properties of NTFS.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable device drivers to the most current versions.

From MSDN...

You may have to remove the drive and hook it up as a slave drive in another working machine to run dskchk and DEFRAG...

Let us know...You can use the install CD to install system with UPGRADE mode

during the installing the setup program will check the automaticly,
if the install completed successfully you disk is OK ,otherwise you disk must came with some problems. Not a geniune o/s disk> I persume<

Solve : Windows XP Boot-up Crash?

Answer»

So I turned my computer on like any other day. Opened up Firefox turned on my Techno Radio, and logged on to world of warcraft. On the loading screen my computer shuts off completely... So i turn it BACK on, it boots up fine, I do the exact same thing, and my computer crashes again at the loading screen.  Now this time when i turn my computer on, it crashes right beforte loading the XP Login screen. it happens whenever i turn on the computer now..

So i read up online trying to figure out whats going on.. (i'm using my brothers computer right now).

-I tried the "set computer back to previous date" thing, no luck.
-I tried the "run computer in last good configuration" or whatever its called, and that didn't work.
-I can successfully get to my computer on Safe mode.

I checked the device manager, and there are no errors on any of the devices*
* - Because im in running in safe mode, some of the devices are disabled, so they MIGHT be the error crashing my computer.

so my question is, how do i figure out which device is crashing my computer, if im running in safe mode and the devices are disabled? OR, am i totally off, and something else is crashing my computer?

My suspicion is that since i was running several layered audios at once (techno streaming audio + loading videogame audio) crashed my sound card and computer? Can a crashed/overloaded sound card even crash your computer?

The following Groups of Devices are "Unable to see status of device in Safe mode":
-Network adapters
-Display Adapter (NVIDIA GEFORCE 6200)

Just ask and I can list the rest of the names of the devices that are disabled by safe mode, and unable to show status.

My System Specs are:
Xp Home Edition Version 2002 - Service Pack 2
Intel(R) 4CPU 2.60Ghz 2.59Ghz, 1 GB of Ram.

Solve : crushing my computer?

Answer»

I am running xp, and i keep getting a message out of disk space or low.  I think i would need to see if someone could give me step by step instructions on crushing my computer.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks Susanstep 1: find large weight
step 2: hold large weight above computer
step 3. drop large weight... et voila 1x crushed computer...

If you want to increase usable disk space you could uninstall some programs:

1. goto control panel
2. add/remove programs
3. uninstall programs you don't need/use.

FB*When do you get the message?

*What size hard drive do you have?

*How much Free Space is on the drive? My Computer>right-click the hard drive>PropertiesI am running windows xp desk top.  I keep setting a message when i try to install something saying out of disk space or low on disk space.  I have removed everything out of my computer.  I have 539 Capacity, 505 GB used.  and 353MB left.  I have tried everything to make more room.  And i am unable to do this.  Help Please.  Susan QUOTE from: Sisneil on August 24, 2008, 03:21:45 PM

I have 539 Capacity, 505 GB used.  and 353MB left.

How is this possible? You have about 34Gb free. I assume that you have ≈35 GB left. If you have no programs that you are willing to uninstall and no data that you are willing to delete or archive, I think the simplest solution is an additional hard drive; you could also get a larger drive but you would have to re-install Windows, all programs and data.

Windows XP has a file compression scheme that I do not recommend (simply because it is another source for corrupted data) but you may want to investigate it as a short term strategy: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307987.

Best of LUCK!Susan

When you say crushing, do you mean compressing ?

If you use Windows Explorer, select drive C:\, right click and open properties, you will get a display that shows Used space and free space.

NOW BE CAREFUL TO READ ALL I SAY BEFORE YOU CLICK ON ANYTHING.
It also shows an option to "Compress drive to save disk space"
BEFORE you you this, think about a large concrete block.
If you use this it will try to do as requested.
You may be lucky;
You may have "Windows File Protection" demanding CDs to re-install invalid files;
You may find you have taken the long route to the same result offered by fireballs, a dead P.C.

I NEVER EVER compress my hard drive
I periodically use disc cleanup, which includes the option to compress old files that have not been used in the last 30 days.
Just once after launching disc cleanup, it took much longer than normal, and then Windows File Protection KICKED in and demanded installation CD's which I never had, and refused to access the folders where the original pre-installation stuff existed.  Whilst all this was happening I then spotted that the option to "Compress drive to save disk space" had somehow been checked - I never checked it, but it had happened.
Result - Computer between a rock and a hard place - computer lost.

Fortunately I was able to restore a disc image captured the previous week, and I lost nothing other than emails and downloads during that week.
Since then I never allow Disc Cleanup to compress old files unless I have just created a disc image in anticipation of disaster, and I always ensure that option to "Compress drive to save disk space" has NOT been checked.

You may have data files etc that can be safely compressed, but compressing Windows System files is a good way to gain a lot of unhappy experience the hard way.

start>rt click my computer>manage>disk defragmenter?

With ≈6% free space, a defrag would take forever, if it will run.

Besides, her issue is Free Space, not efficiency.First of all:

*How much Free Space is on the drive? My Computer>right-click the hard drive>Properties
That does not work for me on Windows XP Home with SP3.

I can select the desk top short cut to MY Computer, and right click etc. gives system properties including control of System Restore and Automatic updates etc.

If I launch "My Computer" it shows me immediately the size and free space of every drive.
From here I can select My Computer and with that selected a right click etc. again gives me System restore etc.
From here I can also select C:\ (or any other available drive) and with that selected a right click etc. shows for that drive the Used Space and the Free space.  It also has this dangerous check box to compress the whole drive.

I was very concerned that Susan might accidentally stumble across this, either from what she was already told, or perhaps by google searching, and that having stumbled across it she might think it was the answer to her needs - perhaps it is, but I thought I should warn of the dire consequences it could unleash.  It has already bitten me hard when it somehow activated itself.

Okay, just to clear my name...Alan, the sequence given will work perfectly for you "on Windows XP Home with SP3" - you misunderstood my instructions: a) Start My Computer, b) then, right-click on the hard drive in which you are interested, c) then, left-click Properties; free space will be displayed. (Short version: My Computer>right-click the hard drive>Properties) There is nothing "incorrect" in my sequence, and, certainly nothing potentially "disastrous." (Btw, the reason that hdd info is displayed on your machine after invoking My Computer is because of your View selection; my way will work regardless of the View selection.)

No one suggested that you "wantonly posted dangerous instructions." Rather, I think, the query was directed at your logic: a) don't ever do this, b) here's how to do it.

I understand that you were simply trying to share your experience and help the OP avoid what was, for you, a potentially bad situation - but, I think that it is a stretch to suggest that my instructions for finding Free Space were somehow going to lead the OP in a dangerous DIRECTION. Solve : Computer freezing at Welcome screen?

Answer»

I've been trying to resurrect an old Pentium 111 computer with 256mb of RAM for my daughter. It was working 2 months ago but today when I hooked it up, it would freeze after boot but now it's freezing at the Welcome screen. I re-formatted and installed XP Home twice with no luck. I can run it for hours in safe mode and even had Ubuntu running for about one hour. This makes me think that there is nothing wrong with the PSU. I've reset all the cards and memory card. I tried to do a repair but I keep getting this error: Which Windows Installation would you like to LOG onto and it gives me 1 C:Windows. When I select 1 nothing happens. I just tired a USB mouse and it stills hangs at Welcome. Any Ideas what else I can try?How is the cooling? Do you think this may be an issue here?I don't think heat is the problem. I have the side off and all the fans are running. Wouldn't it produce the same amount of heat in SafeMode" It can run all day in Safe Mode. I even had Ubuntu running for about 30 MINS. before it froze. I think that points to a hardware problem. I'm going to see if my neighbor has some memory that I can install for a test. Is there any other tests I could run in Safe Mode? How about, if you post your computer temps, along with processor info?

Nope, because Safe Mode pretty much REQUIRES no processing power as you have almost nothing loaded.I'm going to install Speedfan and get some readings. I've been running  a RAM memory test most of the day and it's finding no errors in the RAM. I'll post those results when I get them. I'll also hook up some speakers to listen for any beeps. I have got a really good idea.

Consider this a notice.

patio. Can I get back my words:)Broni, I installed Speedfan but it won't run in Safe Mode. I just keep getting "needs to shut down" I tried booting with a large fan BLOWING in the side and it still freezes. I ran a 6 hr. diagnostic of the motherboard and it CAME up clean as did the RAM check. I went into the events viewer and I found lots of VSS and EventSystem errors.
Quinghao, I could stop off at a store and buy a dozen computers but that wouldn't achieve my objective which is to learn how to fix these bloody machines.I'm starting to think it might not be a cooling issue.
Seeing as you can boot into Safe Mode but not Normal Mode, there has to be some sort of Startup Item [or something].

I suggest posting a HijackThis log here.
Download here:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthisI'm going to try another re-format. If that doesn't work, I'll try running HJT in Safe Mode since that's the only way I can get the computer to function. Hmmm....All right then.

Solve : Messed up BIOS??

Answer»

Hi all, first post and i really need help. Ill start out with as much info on teh computer and then i will give a history of problems.

Computer:
Gateway
1.5ghz pentium 4
1 gb RAM
2 HDD's
Master: 20gb
Slave: 60Ggb
128mb video card
Windows XP Sp 3

Problems:
When i first bought the computer (used) it worked fine, it then started crashing every few minutes- later it worked better and i could go about an hour before crashing. I found i had some drivers that needed updating so i did what i could and then it worked prety well, crashing every 2 hours or so. Since i got teh computer so CHEAP i figured it was no big deal.

BIG problem: The other day i thought i would transfer some of the stuff from my old HDD onto this computer. So i uplugged the slave HDD and put my old one in its place (not knowing it was set to master) the computer didn't boot so i took it out and put the oldo one it. The computer turned on but it didn't have the other HDD there, just the master 20gb hard drive. So stupidly i went to BIOS and tried to fix somthing. Now i can't even get to the Windows XP screen, it just says "windows had a problem" (or somthing) and then a list of ways to start up the computer, safe mode, last known settings tath worked ect. None of these work and i really don't know what to do.

I tried: Resseting the bios, did this by taking out the battery on the motherboard (little round thing) i tested it and found that the battery has verrry low power so i thought maybe that is the problem? If not what can i do to get my computer WORKING?

Anyways if you there is anything i can do to fix this comp i really need the help. Thanks a million.i cannot get it:
is the computer now at the same status before the big problem? or are still trying to install another hdd?

Very far away answer, but it is possible, that system crashes while replacing the hard drive with an other one.
That dont mean a loss of all data, but the operating system.

Can zou write here the exact error msg you get from windows?

GreetsSince you've already changed the BIOS settings...you probably do not know what they were before you made the changes.

I'd start, first, by replacing the CMOS battery with a brand new one.  Boot into BIOS and use BIOS default settings...exit saving changes.

However, make sure you have the drives installed correctly before attempting any of this.

Keep us posted, please...beango
the comp is at the worst status ever- wont boot.

Drives installed correctly? is this somthing to do with software or do you mean somthing about being plugged in correctly? They are plugged in exactly as they were when they were working.

Im getting a battery later today and will see if it works.Well i don't think this is really an hardware malfunction.
Try the battery, but at this time the batteries are not as important as they were years ago.

It wont boot, OK. But what can you see, what message do you get. Where is the computer stopping to reboot.
You must give us a little bit more detailed information.

And at first, but the old battery in and set the BIOS to default settings. Should be already done by removing the battery. But do it again for test.

If you tell me what the computer what the computer is doing while trying to boot, i can tell you what we can do to repair it.

Seems like at the end we will have to reinstall windows. But that should be one of the latest solutions.Got the new battery, put it in, reset to defaults ect. But nothing happend. I will try to give a detailed description of whats going on.

1. Turn computer on.

2. Screen comes up (black with white letters) "sorry for the inconvinience..." options showing: Safe mode, safe mode with networking, start windows normally ect.

3. Select one of the options (results are always the same) Gateway logo comes up and in a few seconds the computer goes down and goes back to 2.

The files on the computer arent to important so reinstalling windows isn't a big deal. That being the case...why not perform the reinstallation and let us know how it goes.

Booting from your recovery CD...or Windows CD...make sure you wipe the drive clean.

Me...I'd remove the current partition...create a new one, format...and reinstall the operating system.

Keep us posted, please...OK, if you are not ABLE to enter safe mode then i think reinstalling windows is the best now.
You dint have to format the hard disk, even if it would be the clean way, if you really have the opinion that you data is not important.

Tell us if there is another problem.

Greets from Germany.I tried to boot using the windows xp CD but nothing happend, i switched the boot order so the CD booted first, now the computer behaves the exact same way as before but somtimes it will turn off completly.

Do i have any options With the computer case open...and turned on...do you see the CPU fan spinning at all?  Is there a lot of dust accumulation around the fan and heatsink?

if so...it may require cleaning.

I, myself, do believe this is a hardware issue.

Let's take care of the small things...and go from there.

Use compressed air to clean the inside of the computer case.  Make sure its unplugged from its power source, first.

Then, please try again to see if you're still experiencing the same problem.

Troubleshooting may take some time...so, please be patient..as we will do the best we can to help...okay?-Gave the computer a good cleaning, all fans are working. Now the computer stays on for about 4 seconds and then turns off. This could ALSO be a sign of a failing, or failed power supply.

Take a look here:  Power Supply TrobleshootingDon't think its a power supply falure. I checked the fan and it is working fine, and i used the test switch and everything powered up.

I replaced some of the "power strips" (?the long flat cables which connect things to the motherboard) and the computer didn't power off quite as much, but this is probly nothing.

Another NOTE, the second HDD (slave) is no longer recognized in the BIOS... Quote

Don't think its a power supply falure. I checked the fan and it is working fine, and i used the test switch and everything powered up.

This is not a reliable test of the PSU.....okay...there is a lot going on here.

I recommend putting in master with OS in it by itself. Make sure Bios recongizes it as master and set the boot sequence to look at HDD first. If this fails then set Bios to have CD drive first. Put XP cd in it and try repair option.
If this fails then go ahead and reinstall windows BUT keep second HDD out of PC.
If you have both in then when installing windows XP it may not recongize slave drive unless it is refomatted through disk management.

Solve : I can't get into NORMAL mode and Safe mode doesn't work!!!?

I switched to SAFE Mode through MSCONFIG because I thought I had a virus or something and was going to try to remove it that way

I did a windows repair and now when it starts up it is in safe mode and when I ge to the final screen it SAYS "Cannot start in safe mode press enter to restart"

Is there a way to switch to normal mode through setup?

The option for F8 is boot order

It's WindowsXP

Thanks!Yup, keep tapping F8 while the PC is starting, and then select normal mode. There is no 'Normal Mode' option

It's a list of devices: Harddrive, Portable, CD

By the way it's 'Boot Menu' not 'Boot Order'Take a look here - it is the best explanation that I have seen.

P.S. Not to rub it in - The msconfig safeboot option is to be avoided for exactly this reason. Hope you can boot in "Normal Mode.' Quote

This will take you to Device Manager.

Do you see any yellow question marks or exclamation points?
If so, then you will need a driver for that device.

I suspect your USB drivers need to be installed.
When you bought your computer it should have came with a driver disk.
Do you have it?

I NEED to return my works laptop, but I want it to be clear of everything I have done on it. How?
Go to the browser options and look for something that looks like clear history. It should bring up (or be around) more buttons regarding clearing the cache, browser history and cookies. Also, go to the RUN box and type in:

del "%temp%\*"

(Including quotes)thanks!
Here's how I do it:  open internet explorer.  On UPPER left toolbar, click on "Tools".  Click on "Internet Options" (on bottom), Click on "Delete" and go from there.you may be using firefox, if so then clearing your recent history is by "Ctrl + Shift + Del" while your on firefox, then select "Everything" in "Time range to clear" then hit "Clear Now" button.
that's all!

OR another good solution is by using Ccleaner, download and install then hit "Run cleaner" that will clear all your TEMPORARY FILES for all browsers and other things you've done.Keep in mind these are not thorough cleaning procedures...
They will get rid of most of your browsing history but that's about it...
Remnants will still be there and depending on how savvy your IT people are items can still be retrieved  ...
You may want to inquire on what exactly the security policies of the COMPANY are and consider just wiping the entire drive.

Course since you haven't checked back in 6 days perhaps you have found a solution.no i haven't found a solution. I have just been reading my posts and trying to figure out what is best. Thank you for responding.the del"....... did not work.

i would LIKE to clear all the rubbish from the pc , harryHi Harry.    I think what you've found are files which have been flagged as deleted in the MBR and the space those files use on your hdd is available for reuse but the files themselves are still on the hdd altho' you won't find them listed in a Dir or any other listing.

You probably need to wipe the free disk space.   Here is one option and there are plenty others listed here..

Wiping the free disk space will not increase the amount of space available for use on the hdd or improve the seek times.

that ccleaner is well out of date , this the new one CCleaner 2.29.1111 and i run it weekly

mbr , hdd , dir , there are people like myself who do not know what they mean

MFT = Master File Table
HDD = Hard Disk Drive
Dir = Directory

Have you set the Secure Deletion and Wipe Free Space selections in the CCleaner>Options>Settings panel?

Harry you've gotten me cornfused once again...
If the files were deleted why are you looking for them ? ?
If your goal is a fresh start why not just backup what you need..wipe the partition ...and do a clean install ? ?Hello Patio..and thank you again for all your help with my hard disk. I am viewing this forum and learning many things. The post question on this topic was how to get rid of old files that you have deleted..Is thwere any way to retrieve files from, like a year ago, pictures that were taken away etc.? Is there any free-ware from download .com or any other place that a person could utilize to find things that they had on the hard disk a year ago?  many thanks for any information! Why? Deleting files is apt to cause more harm then good.

Only reason you'd want to delete, say, cookies or cached web pages is if you found a mistress in lady jpeg.Nothing wrong with a wipe and clean install every now and then...
I do it about 3-4 times a year myself. Quote from: patio on March 04, 2010, 05:39:42 AM

Sorry - I've never understood people who say or do that. I've NEVER reinstalled an OS on any system in 25 years unless I wanted to upgrade to a new OS and do a clean install.i agree with allan , i see no reason to do a reinstall unless it is needed , i just want to get into the pc to do a

clean out of stuff i know i do not have any more and old files i put into the pc and deleted long ago , i know

not to take stuff out that i do not know about Then don't do it...and learn to live with the old file remnants you are chasing.
You cannot have it both ways...OMG patio don't give off  it's not like you  Not giving up...
i just see no other efficient way to remove random ghosts and remnants on a machine other than a wipe and clean install...
You could run file cleaners til your blue in the FACE and still manage to find them.

BTW I have no problem with the view that a re-install is not neccessary...to each his own.
It's just what i would do...nothing more...nothing less.
