Answer»

I have a Dell DIMENSION 5100 computer that has recently been Killed in action. The Hard DRIVE is dead. I went AHEAD and replaced it with a new ONE. Only now whenever I try to install my Windows XP PRO install disk it does not work. I have already gone into BIOS and selected ''Boot Sequence'' then made sure that the Onboard or USB CD-Rom Device boots first from the CD. I keep getting the ''Floppy diskette failure'' message. I need help!!!! Move floppy down to the last position in the boot order...
Where is this XP CD from ? ?

Solve : Creating bootable flash drives to install XP pro help!?

Answer»

I have two separate copies of windows, and I am trying to GET one of them installed on my currently OS-less netbook. I have an Xp home INSTALL disc, but after the computer says that it has to reboot to continue, it claims that there is some corrupted or missing .dll file in the system32 folder.

On the other hand, I have a .gbi file for xp professional, but I do not know how to take that .gbi file and make it bootable from my flash drive. One thing I have tried was to burn it as an OS install disc and then tranfer the disc VERSION to the flash drive using WinToFlash, but it said that it was not an install disc.

Specifics:
netbook has 3 usb's and an SD PORT, but no disc drive. Its a Dell Mini with Intel Atom.
I also have access to a desktop with a disc drive, so if there is anything that is needed for, I can use it. The desktop has xp home on it.

I think you may need a legit XP CD for success...the installer disc is a legit copy from Microsoft, the .gbi is from a torrent.Try gently CLEANING the XP CD with a soft lint-free cloth...

Post back with your findings.Try renaming it with the appropriate extension. What type of file is it?C:\>attrib /?

C:\>praglen, please ignore the meaningless post above this one.If the file has no extension and you don't know what type of file it is, you can always open in notepad and examine the first two or three characters. You can then google that to find out what type of file it is and which program you should use to open it. All I know off the top of my head is that MZ is an exe file. Praglen,

When you google the above ideas in post #3 above , you will find all the
suggestions germane and might fix your problem.

The syntax of the command chmod is:

chmod [numeric value] [file name]

The numeric value to make a file writable is 777 and the file name is logfile.txt for example:

chmod 777 logfile.txt

http://filext.com/faq/files_with_no_extension.php

"How to Handle Files With No Extension
What about files with no extension?

"With no extension there can be no direct association. So, you have to know exactly what the file's format is. You can only know this by either looking into the file and trying to FIGURE it out or, easier, sending a note to the person who sent you the file asking what program created it and what format it's in. With that information you can determine if you can open the file."

[Note: If you can't copy the file with a different extension make certain that COMMON file extensions are set to SHOW. See the FAQ here for instructions.]"

try analyzing the file here:

http://mark0.net/onlinetrid.aspx

it should determine the type of file. Report back with results and we can probably GIVE you some extensions to try adding to the filename.

Solve : to give or not to give??

Answer»

I have an old computer, bought reconditioned, never used by me. I would like to GIVE it to an elderly friend as a replacement for the one that died, but I don't know if it would be sufficient to meet his needs. I have no idea what his former computer specs were--he knows even less about computers than I do. So, here's what I have available: Dell tower w/cd & floppy drives, PIII 500 mz processor, 256mg ECC SDRAM, no pcmica sockets, no disk compression, and about a 9 gig hard drive. I believe Windows 98SE is running on it, I also have available Windows 2000. There is Word/Excel 2000, and some misc., software, also PC Cillin 98. Is this something useable for email, forums, and uploading photos? He is an avid gardener and a treasured member of a forum to which I also subscribe, and we all would like to see him get back on-line. I'll be absorbing the cost of gas to transport it to him, so if something needs to be upgraded, can it be done for under $50.00 US? One other thing, unless the computer is plugged in, it boots up a BIOS SCREEN and ASKS for the time and date every time I plug it in and turn it on. If it's plugged in, but not turned on, it seems to be OK. Thanks in advance for your advices.
sv7Replace the CMOS battery...about 3 or 4 bucks ...that will eliminate the boot ERROR and maybe put in a 40G hard drive..35 to 40 bucks and install Win2k and he'll have a more than adequate machine there.

And here's a well rounded protection package for him...all FREE

AVG Free
AdAware
Spybot Search and Destroy
AVG Anti-Spyware
Wow, I didn't realise how old this topic was, and that I am sorely delinquent in my thanks.

The friend in question did eventually receive a new computer, and mine was updated and given away. I thank you, Patio, for your advice, and I'm sorry it's so delayed.

Regards,
sv7No problem....

Solve : 4 hours till Windows 7 expires...?

Answer»

So, I bought a desktop (Dell XPS) off of craigslist last SUMMER, and it had a trial copy of Windows 7 on it. Well I have been out of town recently, just got back and logged on to my computer to find out that this trial will end in about 4 HOURS. I have backed everything up to an external HD, and am trying to install my old Windows XP onto this system (hence me posting this in the XP section). I have installed XP several times before without any issues, although now I am running into trouble

What happens is that I boot from DISK, allow it to start loading up, then at the bottom it says, "Starting Windows". At this point I have not done anything, I am just waiting for it to put me in to the loading part. At this point, the screen goes blue, and I am getting a STOP: 0x0000007B error message and it wont go any further. I am forced to shut down, and have retried with no LUCK.

The message says something like (cant remember exactly):
Windows has detected and error and is shutting down to prevent damage to your computer
If this is the first time you have seen this message, restart and try again. Otherwise follow instructions below:
Check for viruses(which I have)....do a Chkdsk /f (which I did)...and some stuff about BIOS I think.

So anyway, I would sure like some help on this. I am sure you all need more info or something, just let me know and I will post it. Thank you!Are you quite sure it is booting to the XP CD ? ?
Double check to see if CDRom is the 1st boot device in the BIOS.Where did you get the XP disk?
What kind is it?
If you have another PC you can use it to help do the install.
in the BIOS 1st boot is Optical Drive, which is the CDROM, right? I am pretty certain it is booting from the CDROM, everything works like I want until the error screen.

I am using A Windows XP Home Edition CD, i have used it in the past and had no issues with it. It is one I bought several computers back. The only other computer I have in the house is a laptop...This may be a quick work around.
Boot up your computer with anything that can erase a hard drive.
A floppy with FDISK.
Almost any Linux Live Distro.
A Sea gate HDD prep floppy.
The problem is Windows XP Setup can not read the hard drive until you erase it and write a new MBR to it.

Not true at all...an XP setup disk can read any HDD no matter what OS is installed to it.

If he is not seeing the Windows is inspecting your hardware config screen it's not booting to the XP CD...download the SATA drivers for the PCs motherboard to a floppy disk.

When XP prompts "press f6 to load a third-party or RAID driver" do so.

Windows XP does not support SATA.

My personal remedy is the easy way out. I set the SATA mode in the BIOS to IDE or "compatible" so that the OS can treat the SATA controller as it would a IDE controller. Quote from: patio on March 01, 2010, 03:20:33 PM

I see a screen that says:
Windows Setup

Setup is Loading files (bunch of files, drivers, floppy disk, CDROM, etc)

Then "Windows is Starting" before I get error screenBecause it's a Dell and the hard drive has the Dell hidden system restore partition, Windows setup disk doesn't know what to make of it. You need to delete the partitions with Parted Magic or HDD manuf. setup software.I still think it's because the Drive is SATA...If BC's guess is correct very early on in the setup process there is a bottom screen prompt stating "Press F6 to install additional Drivers"...at that point insert the MBoard cd and it will load the SATA drivers...

However it sounds as if setup is not letting him get that far.

0x0000007B is an Unmountable boot volume error....

he says it lists the various drivers and the "windows is starting" text... IIRC the prompt is for a few seconds before it says "windows is starting" (which I believe reads Windows Setup is starting or Setup is starting windows)Would the easiest solution be to just buy Windows 7 and reformat with that? Would that solve the issues? No trason you shouldn't be able to install XP successfully but it's up to you...

I am sorry but nothing is working for me. First I dont have a floppy, but thought I would try to put Sata drivers to a USB or something, but I cant even figure out what motherboard I have. Opening it up and looking tells me nothing, I dowloaded Aida32 and everything is "unknown".

I also tried to change the SATA mode in my BIOS, but it appears I cannot do that either. I can disable the SATA, but there is no mention of IDE anywhere.

To you guys this might take 10sec, but I seem to be hitting wall after wall here. I appreciate the help and time, hopefully I can figure this out.

Solve : Dell XPS M140 automatically logs off.?

Answer»

I try to login and it just instantly logs off
I try safe mode and it takes me to a blue error screen
Last good configuration does the same thing

I have a Dell XP disc but it doesnt belong to this laptop it belongs to a desktop

I have successfully done the copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe but it still does it.

If there are no other ways to fix this, will clicking Set Up WINDOWS XP now mess anything up? I dont care about the information stored on the drive i just want the thing to work. If i can fix this without losing the information it would be great, but if i cant i wont cry too much. What is the blue screen error message?

Define "login" and "logs off"A Problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer

Technical Information:
*** STOP: 0X0000007e (0xC000001D, 0x8053332F, 0xF9C6050C, 0xF8C60208)

I mean the computer looks like its fine, boots up normally, then goes to the login screen, its the login BOX with the name and password look to it, you login in fine it says logging in shows my desktop background and then instantly says logging off...
1) Logging off, shutting down, or rebooting?

2) Is that the ENTIRE error message? Doesn't it mention an associated file?

3) Have you recently installed any new hw, sw, or drivers?

There are a number of possible causses of a 7E error. Knowing if a file is mentioned would be a HUGE help. If not, update the video and audio drivers and check for a bios flash. Check to see how much free space there is on the hd. Boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r

These are the basic, generic first steps for addressing a 7E error but again, if a file is mentioned on the blue screen we can address it a little more SURGICALLY.There are some late infections, which will cause this kind of issue, but let's try this first: http://saveme.danfischbach.com/safemodeNo file errors or anything, i saw that tutorial, but didnt it say Vista somewhere?No.1. Which laptop?
     a. Make, model name/number (and "service tag" number, if Dell computer).

2. Operating System. Which version and service pack level was laptop at? (For example, Windows XP Professional SP3.)

3. Dell XP CD.
     a. Is this a Dell Operating System disc or a restore/recovery disc?
     b. If an operating system disc, which version and service pack level?

4. Restore/Recovery Partition. If it's the original hard drive, there may be a hidden partition which may be used to restore the hard drive (operating system + applications) to the "state" when shipped.

That being said, I'd probably make an effort to fix the current problem first...Lots of cooks.Agreed. I'm interested in the problem/solution. GUESS I should have just hit the "Notify" button. Now where is that "Delete" button...A Problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, RESTART your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacture for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as chaching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0X0000007e (0xC000001D, 0x8053332F, 0xF9C6050C, 0xF8C60208)

Thats EXACTLY what it says when i go into safe mode.

heres a video of the start up, it does the safemode now because of how i have to make it shut down, and it asks if i want to boot the disk because i changed the start up order.

Solve : Font size in Outlook Express?

Answer»

When I set the font size as, say, Ariel Regular 12, in Outlook Express, the print I get on the monitor gives me a different font size. How to solve this problem plse? Can you be more specific with your question?

Do you mean the new font size your trying to change on outlook express reverts back to the original/new larger size?Try Print Preview...Sometimes guessing without asking frustrates the questionnaire.
I was HOPING to avoid that thanks.

(If) you mean print preview 'Guzeppi',
You'll always notice a difference in font.
Try printing your font to see if it's acceptable ENOUGH.

If the outcome is too small, adjust it accordingly. Quote from: Junkz on March 04, 2010, 05:04:16 PM

Sometimes guessing without asking frustrates the questionnaire.
I was hoping to avoid that thanks.

And not providing enough information and making it necessary to guess in the first place frustrates the respondents.

and wouldn't calling the OP a inanimate survey tool be more likely to frustrate them?

You can use two methods so the print\font looks OK on the SCREEN as you stated in the original post:

1) To set Font preferences for just the current EMAIL you are creating:

In a New Message window, CLICK on the Format button, select Font and make your settings.

2) To set Default preferences for all emails:

Open Outlook Express and select Tools \ Options from the top menu.
Click on the Compose tab.
Make your changes in the Compose Font section.
Click Apply \OK .

Solve : I have a quick question about the Windows built in Disk Defragmenter utility?

Answer»

After a clean, fresh install of Windows XP Home SP3 on a new build. All windows security updates, ETC installed. IE-8

Initially the first time I ran the defrag utility after getting it going, it told me I "needed to defrag".

Then with a follow up, just for good measure, defrag. It starts with

"Analysis is complete for: (C:)

You do not need to defragment this volume."

Then I continue on anyway. As I SAID, just for good measure.

It says;

"Defragmentation is complete for: (C:)

Some files on this volume could not be defragmented.
Please check the defragmentation report for the list of these files."

Then I view the Report, Under the block where it says "files that did not defragment"

Its blank.

Everything is smooth but this.

So do I have a problem or, just, do not defrag unless it tells you to do so?Don't worry about it.

Personally, I defrag once a week (I do not look at the report afterwards). Others rarely defrag. Especially with NTFS it's not a big deal either way.

BTW, I use PerfectDiskI've been using defraggler and like it better than the one that comes with Windows.

http://www.piriform.com/defragglerAuslogics....
The blank list is because Windows was expecting restore POINTS...

No worries.

PS. If you are really into sts and giggles after a clean install VISIT PCPitstop and let it TELL you how screwed up that machine is...Thanks for the quick responses.

I was thinking I was OK, but wanted to double check before I went any further, like installing, Microsoft Word and such other programs.

Patio, is that PCPitstop one of those programs that tells you have a 1000 problems, then it supposedly fixes them up, and they are back the next day.

thanks again

Solve : Local Settings Temp Folder?

In the username/local settings/temp folder. Is it okay to delete things in there?

I'm thinking yes because it's a temp folder but thought i would ask FIRST, and you guys always have the right answer.

I found some 5 GB of folders which say "from camera" and I'm PRETTY SURE i don't need those.

Also a lot of folders with 2KB size which say Microsoft Outlook KESetup.

Things like that.

Thanks for the help, again. Should be safe to delete...
If you are unsure create a new folder...move the contents to that folder...if all runs fine after a few boots then delete the folder. Thanks for the help, never figured it could be so simple. No problem...It's generally okay to delete anything you see in a temp folder AFTER A REBOOT (some newly installed programs place files NEEDED to complete the installation in the temp folder that will run at the next boot).

Solve : automatic logging off loop!?

Answer»

I am having serious problems with my machine. i recently did a virus scan and after the reboot i was STUCK in the automatic log off loop. i think that my anti virus moved my registries and now i can't even get on in safe mode as the administrator. I have tried to boot off of my xp cd but i just get a blank screen with the small line at the top. I have tried to get a floppy boot but i don't know the command prompts after i get to the black screen with the A:\ showing. I would like to save the stuff i have on the machine now but it is not that important. the only other in the house is a mac so i am limited. any help would be appreciated!make sure you check the "boot device order" or similarly named entries in BIOS/setup and make sure that cd drive is set as a boot device, and preferably the first boot device. i turned off everything but the cd drive i can hear the disc spinning but it never boots off of it. i tried to copy the cd to a jump USB and it does the same thing. i can boot off a floppy but i don't know what to type in after thatMoved to the Windows XP forum.

An uneducated guess is that the HDD is on it's way to completely dying but here are a few things to try.

* Use another PC to make a special CD which you can boot from to try to run virus and spyware scans or to at LEAST save your personal files before reinstalling Windows.
* Try one of these Rescue CDs:

* Avira AntiVir Rescue System
* UBCD4Win
* SystemRescueCd
* Trinity Rescue Kit

* Reinstall the Operating System Quote from: bnichols04 on March 05, 2010, 08:44:37 PM

1. Stop Code? It might be WORTHWHILE to see what Microsoft thinks the problem is. They may be displaying a "Stop Code" message on a blue screen which is being masked by the quick transition to an automatic restart.

2. Disable Auto Restart. Use the function key during system startup to access the Windows Advanced Options Menu. Tap the <F8> key once or twice per second as you startup the computer (or immediately after POST completes and screen flashes black prior to displaying Windows XP logo with its processing bar display).

From the Windows Advanced Options menu, use the up/down arrow keys to select the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and hit .

Hopefully it will stop on a Blue Screen.

3. Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Report the "exact" STOP code string with its four parameters as well as any short error string and/or software module it might name.

I used the autorun file, it began something, and then gave me an error MESSAGE. I cannot find a .exe file LIKE the one you stated. I would post a picture of what files it shows if I could find a way to paste a SCREEN shot onto the board.Open each folder and you should see what you need...
Or you could simply do the update driver method in Device manager and when it ASKS for the file point it to the drive...It was a typo.
patio meant setup.exe, not aetup.exe Quote from: Broni on March 05, 2010, 09:25:21 PM

I realized that.
I ran the file and received a error.OK, what driver do you need, why and what's your netbook brand and model?"an error message"

What was this error message? Quote from: Broni on March 05, 2010, 09:50:07 PM
OK, what driver do you need, why and what's your netbook brand and model?
dell min 10, and I need a driver for the built in wirelesscard.Did you go to Dell's site to download the driver?
...and also, what are the problems, you're having? This may take awhile...

Solve : Task Scheduler service disappeared from the Services list?

Answer»

I use Windows-XP PRO. Task Scheduler SERVICE generates problems with almost every Windows version now and in past years as well, as you can see with search engines on Internet. Typical cases are:
- The service is not running
- Task Scheduler is "not installed as a service".

In my case both issues are true. On forums, a specific error code is 0x80041315 mentioned very often. This is also my case.

I discovered the following issues :
- TASK SCHEDULER service does not appear in the list of services.
- One registry key is missing : HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Schedule.

I have no recent backup of the key.
I found the key on internet at several websites. Most websites are showing the same basic contents ; probably the original native contents installed from the Windows CD.

I imported the key to replace the one missing in the Register.
I used following FILE.reg. Double clicking on it, imported the key with success to the Register:

=======================FILE.reg=========================
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Schedule]
=====================================================

After that, I exported the newly created key. As you can see in the exported key, a new subkey "Enum" had been added by Windows. This a good sign because the created key was been recognized by the system.

==================Exported Key "Schedule"===================
Key Name:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Schedule
Class Name:
Last Write Time: 2/26/2010 - 4:14 PM
Value 0
Name: Start
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 0x2

Key Name:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Schedule\Enum
Class Name:
Last Write Time: 2/26/2010 - 4:14 PM
Value 0
Name: 0
Type: REG_SZ
Data: Root\LEGACY_SCHEDULE\0000

Value 1
Name: Count
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 0x1

Value 2
Name: NextInstance
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 0x1
==============End of Exported Key "Schedule"==================

However this action (importing the key) is not enough to make the Task Scheduler
appear back again on the list of the other Services. As long as this service is not back on the Services list, I don't know how to make it start either.

How can I bring this service back to life ?
I WELCOME any advice. Thank you.
Schedule key seems to be more complex, than that.
This is how it looks on my Vista (I'll try in a moment to see, how it looks on my XP):

I guess that importing your key "just as it is" can't harm functionality, since anyway there is none anyway here on my system.

I will consider this.
I suppose that the only thing I need to do for that is to paste your entire text [within the quoted area] into a file "whatever-filename.reg" ... and doubleclick on it ?

(but adding at the TOP 2 mandatory LINES shown just before the Quote area, of which the second line must be empty)

Maybe I will wait a little longer, in case more information would come along about the issue.Yes, I put a "quote" wrap in a wrong place.
Create fresh restore point first.

Importing your Register Key and a reboot did the job.
Task Scheduler service is back in the Services list with status "Started"

Of course I got an immediate attempt from M$ to install additional crap
Internet Explorer 7/8 RSS Support – MSFEEDSSYNC.EXE which I really don't need.
WinPatrol's watchdog Scotty however was on Patrol !

But the fact that I got the warning message from WinPatrol confirms that the service was back in business. I expect that next step (making tasks run on schedule) will be no problem, but I have to check on that.

Thank you again very much.

Post-scriptum : Can we edit the TOPIC title to add the word [Solved] in front ??
That would be nice because I didn't find a working solution elsewhere in Google search results, for exactly the same issue.

I have no idea why and when this service disappeared in the first place.
I'm glad, things worked out

I love SMILEYS & emocions ! They add life to my e-mails! However, long ago, I deleted the ones I had cause my ISP SAID they could add spam, adware, & spyware. Aren't there any safe sites to use?You mean like......This?
http://bestsmileys.com/pageindex.htmSounds like Smiley CENTRAL and yes the software if racked with spyware and the occasional TROJAN. Do yourself and more importantly your friends a favor and stay away from the smiley packages. You aren't only putting spyware on your PC but also to anybody you send one of these smileys to.

Solve : Multiple Boot with an Upgrade Disk??

Answer»

Hi, I have an old Windows XP computer, I don't really have much information about it to give you, but I was wondering if it was possible to create a multiboot system using a Windows ME upgrade disk. Also, the same applies to my other computer- Vista 32 bit, Hp pavilion slimline, 188 GB ram, ( more about this computer on my profile) and I was wondering if an XP upgrade disk can multiboot with it. I know it's possible to multiboot with an older system, but I'm not sure if you can use an upgrade edition. Thanks in advance, any information will be helpful Not enough info...
What do you want to dual boot with ?

Ah, sorry about that, I must have mistyped. It's 200GHz.

Right, well what I'm asking is, if I can install an older upgrade disc as a second Os. I do know that it is possible to install an older operating system over a newer one, such as windows 98 over 95, but I'm not sure if you can multiboot with an older upgrade.

I have two computers, the first is a 32-bit XP home edition with 512MB Ram( its Very old), I don't know much about it, however I could get you more information if you need it. I have a ME "special edition upgrade" disc to install onto this machine. I am asking here first because I don't want to go to all the trouble of partitioning, formatting, and then EDITING boot.ini, only to find I can't install it.

The second is my 32-bit Vista Home Premium , 1.88GB RAM, Hp Pavilion Slimline, running service pack two. (200GHz CPU) I have a XP Professional disc (another upgrade disc), and once again I was wondering if it was possible to install it onto the vista, but because it's older, I'm not sure if it would work. And even if, for INSTANCE, I was trying to install a windows 7 upgrade disc, I'm not sure if I'd be able to, because it would upgrade my system, rather than just installing it.

So basically, I want to know if it is possible to use an upgrade disc, mainly an older one, as a secondary operating system. For instance, you can install Vista onto a XP machine as a second Operating System, or 98 over 95, Vista over 7, etc; but I just don't know if you can use an upgrade disc. Sorry if I haven't phrased thins very clearly

Not with an Upgrade CD...no.
The option would be 1 OS or the other. Quote from: emilyelysian on March 08, 2010, 02:16:55 AM

You still have that wrong. The fastest processors are in the 3 to 3.5 GHz range. I imagine your speed may be 1/100th of 200GHz, or 2GHz. Right click on My Computer (XP) or Computer (Vista) and select Properties. You'll see the processor speed shown there.it probably says 2.00 Ghz, and they omitted the decimal is all. Solve : Trying to reinstall xp pro operating system in a Dell Inspiron laptop.?

Answer»

I began this project merely trying to start this machine, I found I could not get past the user password on this counterfeit installation. I decided to install a legitimate version of xp. I found that the cd disk drive in the machine did not work. I plugged in an external cd drive and found that the machine did not read the drive properly. I tried an external floppy drive and it seems to register. I was wondering if there were a WAY to access the hard drive with a startup disk on the floppy drive and somehow format c drive so I could later reboot xp pro from a disk. (skipping the previous user password) I tried to use administrator to change password but failed. I attempted to access the BIOS but ALSO failed. INSTEAD of WAITING for another external cd rom drive to get the ball rolling, I was wondering if this could be done by floppy drive.

Solve : computer keeps crashing?

Answer»

My computer shut down on its own the other night and I couldn't reboot it..it WOULD freeze up. I had to run the virus scan on safe mode and it came up as my computer having a virus, which I cleaned. I ran the scan again and it came back as clean.

When I rebooted my computer, the desktop screen was white with a blue triangle and had an error message saying SOMETHING like "active desktop recovery". i found the solution to that problem on this forum and I think I have fixed that problem. But my computer kept crashing.

I ran the virus scan again and it came back clean. I ran a maleware scan and it came back clean. So I bought a registery cleaner (I think that is what it is called). the name of the SOFTWARE is Registry Easy. I ran that, cleaned up the fixes and I am still having PROBLEMS with my computer freezing up on me. I don't know what to do at this point. For example, since typing this message here, my computer has frozen up on me twice and I have had to reboot.

The operating system is Win XP home edition. It is a Dell desktop. Not sure what else you need by way of information but any help would be greatly appreciated. This computer is less than a year old.

I uninstalled and re-installed my browsers (IE, Firefox, and Chrome) and Chrome is the only that works. My computer is still crashing about every 10 minutes. When is the last time you opened it up and cleaned out all the dust bunnies ? ?
NOTE: A can of compressed air is the preferred method...do NOT use a Vacuum.
Remove all power to the machine and take anti-static precautions.1. Overheating. Following up on "patio's" suggestion to blow out the dust, you could also download some programs to monitor the temperature sensors of your computer.
     a. http://www.filehippo.com/download_speedfan/
     b. http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

2. Safe Mode. Boot Windows to Safe Mode and see if the problem follows you there.

3. Memory DIAGNOSTICS. Download the "free" diagnostic software at either www.memtest86.com or www.memtest.org and create the desired bootable media. Boot the program and let it run indefinitely ( key to exit). You should let it run at least two hours to test the memory. There should be no memory errors.

Even if you don't suspect memory, it's worthwhile to exercise the motherboard, CPU, and memory independent of the Windows software to see if the problem follows you. If it doesn't, look towards the hard drive with the software of the Windows boot (and other devices not used during memory diagnostics).Have you looked at task manager to see if there is anything using too much CPU or memory? Also try downloading ProcessXP. It is a task manager equivalent with additional features.

Solve : Rundll32.exe Problems?

Answer»

I am new to this forum and appreciate any help I can get.

A virus removed my Rundll32.exe FILE and I do not have an XP CD Rom to get a replacement. Can someone e-mail me ONE? Sorry we don't do that here...

You'll need to borrow 1.

Repair Install of XP
See if you have a backup COPY in your "%systemroot%\system32\dllcache" directory, where "%systemroot%" usually resolves to "c:\windows". In other words look in "c:\windows\system32\dllcache" (or elsewhere on your system).

"rundll32.exe" belongs in your "system32" subdirectory.

The "Size" and "Modified" values for mine are "32.5 KB (33,280 bytes)" and "Sunday, April 13, 2008, 9:42:34 PM".

Of course if the file is there, I would have thought "Windows File Protection" would have restored it already. Guess I don't KNOW how that really works...

Solve : Network Connection Hardware problem? or Windows XP slowness problem??

Answer»

Hi,

I start up my computer and for some reason the wireless connection and other programs seem to take a little longer than the sound, antivirus and other programs. This causes the Windows Explore not wanting to start.

Is this just XP being slow? Will this improve if I upgrade to Windows 7? Is this a hardware flaw?

Laptop Specifications:
Hard Drive: 160GB 7,200 RPM
RAM: 2GB (1.75) Upgrading soon to 3GB
Main processor: AMD Athlon X2 2.2GHz Dual core
Brought in Jan 1

Any other information you may need please contact me.No, the problem has something to do with you current software installation. From the information given in your post, it SOUNDS like a program is trying to get on the internet and is slowing down the system from its start up chores. Did you recently do something new with your PC? Maybe a large download? P2P files sharing can really slow down you machine when it starts. Do you do that?Um I am not really sure. I thought it might be something to do with the programs slowing it down. If I upgrade to windows 7 will this help go away or even better go away completely? Oh and Does windows 7 SUPPORT USB RAM?

1. Not really sure what you mean... You have plenty of system memory (RAM) for Windows XP; so that shouldn't be an issue.
     a. How long does it take for your system boot to be ready for use (steady down)?
     b. How long does it take if you boot your system to "Safe Mode" or "Safe Mode with Networking"?
     c. Perhaps the system is scanning your network looking for mapped drives and shared resources...
     d. How often do you verify the INTEGRITY of and defrag the file systems?
     e. You can use "Startup Manager" software to control what automatically starts at system startup and login. You can usually cut that list down to the bare minimum. Most software applications can be started on demand (manually) when you "actually" need to use them. See Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel.
     f. Another useful program is SysInternals (now owned by Microsoft) PROCESS Explorer. It is the task manager program Microsoft should have provided with Windows. If you can get it started early enough, it will show you which program is running when and how much CPU it's using.

2. What security software are you running?
     a. Firewall
     b. AntiVirus
     c. AntiMalware
     d. AntiAdware

3. I have no idea whether Windows 7 will be an improvement. I also believe this is a software configuration issue, not hardware.

4. If by "USB RAM" you mean something like "Vista ReadyBoost", the person who wrote this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReadyBoost page believes it does.If he's using readyboost that may actually be the cause of the slowdowns...
With 3G of RAM and XP i'm not sure why it's needed ANYWAYS.

Solve : What is this "Defragment FREE Space"????!?

Answer»

Hello There!

I have come across THE MOST WEIRD term quite recently aka "Defragment Free Space"??
What is there in the "Free Space" to stack & pile up?(as defragmentation is usually explained!)

I got to KNOW about this through PIRIFORM's popular utility >>"Defragler".

How exactly does this work & what's its significance in improving the PC performance? If you do not use this option, all files will still be defragmented (made contiguous), but there might be some free space between those optimized files. Using the "defrag free space" option, the utility will attempt to put all of the free space at the back end of the files. It's a nice housekeeping option, but serves little actual purpose. Thanks Allan for that insight!

What's your favorite Defrag Utility? I've been using PerfectDisk for many years (I'm one of their beta testers) and am a fan. In fact stand by - their new version should be released today. Can you please pass on the 'Beta Version' test key or anything SIMILAR? I know that 'Perfectdisk' is a commercialware & is not free! Of COURSE not. Nice chatting with you - bye.

Solve : Need a repair installation for Win XP Home?

Answer»

Hi guys,
I'm looking at a Compaq Presario C304NR notebook PC for the owner. It will not boot up. It begins to load Windows but stops and displays an error box. The error box says "The system is not fully installed. Please run setup again." At this point, the Windows desktop background, one with a Compaq logo, is displayed. CLICKING on the OK button in the error box just causes bootup to start over and go back to the same screen.

It will not start in Safe Mode. Also, if I try to start with the last know good configuration, it immediately stops and says, "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOW\system32\config\SYSTEM". It continues: "You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

Neither I, nor the owner, have a Setup CD-ROM. However, I can probably borrow a Win XP Home Edition CD from someone. I did put a gparted disc in the CD-ROM drive and determined that the hard drive has a recovery partition on it. I'm just not sure what's the best approach to trying to start a recovery installation from that partition without being able to boot Windows.

I accessed the CMOS Setup Utility and ran a hard drive diagnostic tool which reported no problem with the hard drive. Its report said: "(Quick) Pass"; (Comprehensive) Pass"; and "(S.M.A.R.T) Pass". This was a positive sign, since the owner mentioned dropping the computer and believes that's when the problem started.

Any suggestions on the best way to proceed with this? I believe the owner is not concerned about recovering any files on the computer; however, I want to verify this with him. Again, I can probably borrow a Win XP CD to do a repair installation. The computer has the Win XP product key on the bottom. Or, if I can download some hard drive management tool and create a bootable CD that I could use to reinstall Windows from the Recover Partition, what tool do you recommend?

I may be offline for a few hours, but will check back as soon as possible.Regarding the message from last known good, you can do the following:

Either borrow the XP CD or download the recovery console .iso (http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showtopic=150212) and burn it to disc.

Boot to the recovery console

At the command prompt type:

ren c:\windows\system32\config\system system.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config

Reboot

However, because you only get that message from Last Known Good I'm not sure this will work for you. You may be relegated to borrowing the XP CD (must be the same version as is installed) and do a repair install. Thanks, I'll try that and let you know how it goes. Okay. Good luck. Also, if you want to try the recovery partition, it shouldn't need Windows running to access.

I don't have Compaq info, but on my Acer there are two steps:

1) Ensure Recovery is enabled in BIOS Setup. Restart the system.

2) When the Acer logo is showing, press + to enter the recovery process. Refer to onscreen instructions to perform system recovery. The problem with using the recovery partition is it won't do a repair install on most machines...it'll only take the machine back to Day One status which means all data is gone...

Better off with a CD and This Method...Agreed. As I mentioned in my post above, a repair install will likely be required. Still, no harm in trying to replace the corrupt hive first just to make sure. What I wonder is how did the drive get so bad? Are you sure it isn't on it's way out? You may want to run the drive tools from the manufacture's web site....

Just curious - what makes you think there's anything wrong with the hd?I am not saying it bad. I just wonder if it is bad. You have a old Celeron laptop that has been kicked around and one day it starts to give errors like it can't read part of the drive....

Quote
The error box says "The system is not fully installed. Please run setup again."

All I am saying is before you waste a lot of time trying to fix it just make sure the drive is worth it. It maybe fine but for the time it takes to burn a CD with the drive tools it may save you a lot of time trying to fix it.

Well, the easier method would be to boot to the recovery console and run chkdsk /r. But based on the error message(s) described, the hd would not be my first guess. No harm in checking though.I agree with you Allen. In most cases chkdsk will fix things right up. Maybe checking the drive at this point is overkill.

Anyway, good luck Soybean

The first post said HD is good:

During a call to HP to inquire about getting a recovery disc from them for this computer, I LEARNED that pressing F11 during startup will start the recovery process. I ran that and it APPEARED to be doing a successful reinstallation of Windows until the very end when it just stopped, said please wait, and displayed an hour glass. After waiting about 1 1/2 hours and no progress occurring, I shut off the power.

Oh, I should have stated that, before running the recovery process, I put a Linux Ubuntu disc in the DVD drive, ran Ubuntu off the DVD drive and retrieved hundreds of photos and some other files the owner very much wanted to preserve. I copied those files (2.1GB worth)to a flash drive and then used my laptop to burn them to a DVD.

After discussing the situation with the owner and suggesting, receiving concurrence on, an installation of Ubuntu, I installed Ubuntu. The computer worked fine with Ubuntu. I also informed the owner an recovery disc can be ordered from HP if he decides he'd like to go that route.

Then the computer screen would go on but as soon as I clicked the screen it would go back to black. But not so black that I cant see a thing. I can see on the screen a little bit. Also I know the screen is messed up and not my computer because I tested the screen out on our famliy computer and it did the same thing. I have a samsung computer screen if you need to know. So this is a Desktop Monitor, right?

If the screen is blank but you can still see a bit if you hold it up to the light, that means the screen is damaged. More specifically, the Screen Inverter is damaged.

Just to make sure, try another monitor on the computer. If it works, it confirms that assessment. Thanks! But can i get that fixed or do I need another screen? How old is the monitor?

And...

Yes it is. and it is less then 4 months old!We have had a few people this week come here with broken blacklights and a new monitor.
I would check to see if it is under warranty. If you still have the receipt, you may be able to bring it back to the store you got it from.I would exercise the Warranty immediately...
Most monitors are a minimum 1 Year warranty...

If you're symptoms are Exactly the same as above (you can still see what is on the screen but it is gone dark), you can either use your Laptop Warranty or Give it to the Computer Store to fix.
You don't need to get a new laptop (depending how old it is).

Solve : Windows Media 11 no longer burns to CD, 'recording' tab disappeared!?

Answer»

CD & DVD drives don't have 'recording' tabs!
Help!
OK, here's what is going on. Several weeks ago (don't remember exactly when, mid or late JANUARY) I was fooling around & INSTALLED some programs so I could convert songs from my phone to a format my computer could read. Didn't work, I uninstalled it.

Then a bit later I downloaded a program to ID music by playing it over speaker into the microphone to id a song. Uninstalled it, too. I know one of these programs (again, don't remember) told me to change my default 'record media from the drive to I think a virtual drive.

Anyway, I think this is what has caused my problem, which is I can no longer get CD-R's to burn. I have a Dell DImension 5100 with Windows XP and when I try to use Media Player to burn songs to a CD, it looks as if it is going thru the PROCESS, but doesn't do it. XP and media player recognize the drives and I can play CD's or DVD's, just can't get the computer to remember that yes, these drives are capable of recording.

Also, when I put a blank CD-R into either drive they show under properties to be 'full' and have no SPACE left on them, even though they are new. When I go to 'properties' on both drives, there is no 'recording' tab so I cannot 'enable' recording.

I have Googled around and here is what I have tried to do to fix it.
I used the Microsoft site's suggestion to edit the registry and change the drive values from 1 to 2 or 3. No help.
I made sure the IMAPI value in Admin Services was on 'automatic' and I force started it. No help.
I went back to the registry and deleted the high filters and low filters in the registry file related to the drives. No help.
I uninstalled the drives in device manager, logged off and logged on to reinstall, but they already had. No help.
I uninstalled the drives and immediately went to 'new hardware wizard.' It found them and installed them. No help.
I reinstalled Nero, my burning SOFTWARE. No help.
I went back to Microsoft's site and used the automatic 'Fix It' wizard, but it said both drives were not capable of recording (bogus, since I've burned I don't know how many CD's since I got this computer in mid 2007).
I probably forgot some stuff, since I have been at this all afternoon and evening, but I'm really frustrated.

Both drives were working great forever, so I guess when I installed those programs I mentioned earlier, it jacked up something. I don't think I've tried to burn any CD's since I got rid of both of those programs up until today, when I discovered the problem.

Thing is, I CAN'T remember which program had me change the 'record' or burn to feature. I think it changed it from the E: and D: drive to something else, but don't remember where or how.

Yeah, I know it was stupid to not write it down, and yeah I regret screwing with either program.

But I'd really like some help here, if anyone can!
I appreciate it!

Solve : tried slip stream sp3 on xp coorperate still wont recognise sata drive?

as the topic states i am running a 250g sata drive in my laptop i originally had vista but i dont like the format or the performance i tried to go back to xp but it is saying that it wont recognise the hard drive
any help would be appreciated There's not enough info to assist i'm afraid...
Are you saying you tried to MAKE a SLIPSTREAM CD or you used 1 to try to install XP ? ?
If so how was this CD made and what flavor SATA drivers does it contain ? ?
They have to match your MBoard...it INTERFACED properly with my mboard when i was running vista. it ran fine with vista but i would rather RUN xp so i did a full restore and used a slipstream program (it works we tried it with another computer) and it just one recognise my satai created a disc that slipstreamed and still cant get xp to work
and what do you mean by flavorYou're terminology is confusing....
"What" interfaced with your MBoard when running Vista ? ?
Again "What" slipstream app was used and where is the XP info from ? ? Factory or MS CD ? ?
Flavor meant did you use the proper SATA drivers...(the ones from the MBoard manuf...) and the proper ones for XP ? ?
The SATA drivers may be different for Vista.

Just so you know restore or not you cannot slipstream an existing XP install and expect it to run...it doesn't work that way.
You need an original XP CD to create a slipstream installation CD.This sounds like they slipstreamed SP3 into a XP install and for some reason think that this gives XP SATA capabilities.I'm just confused... paradox - did you use a utility line nlite to include the sata drivers in the slipstream?Wait, I dont think there is an XP Corporate.

OK. I'll correct you. You're only a bit wrong. The Corporate versions are XP-Pro that require no Product ID, since it's imbedded into the CD. When Corporations purchase a site license, they get a Corporate version to install on hundreds or thousands of company computers. You are 100% right.

There is Absolutely no version of windows XP called "Corporate" there are Home, And Professional. (and, in some countries, Starter)

That's it. PERIOD.

"Corporate" is just a way it's packaged on the disk- akin to Retail, OEM, etc.

okay let me tell you the whole story (hoping to clear up the confusion). my laptop ran vista at first. okay with me so far. i would rather have it run xp so i have an xp disc and used an online slipstream program to slipstream sp3 onto the disc. we have checked with an older computer and it slipstrams properly. but when i attempt to install xp on my laptop it wont recognise the sata drive. hopfully it is better explained now, sorry for the confusionI'll ask for the 3rd time...how was this slipstream CD made ? ?
I believe the root of all your issues is the CD... Quote

They slipstreamed Service Pack 3; not the SATA drivers.

Service Pack 3 does not make it possible to detect SATA drives running in AHCI mode. Either set your SATA controller to "compatible/IDE" in the BIOS or get the actual SATA drivers for your board onto a floppy or slipstreamed onto the disc as well Quote from: ThomasTheXPUser on March 03, 2010, 04:59:44 PM

Or can I just try to re install my restore disk?Sounds like the HDD is dead.
But wait. There are other things that give that message. You may have lost the proper settings in the BIOS. Check and see if the BIOS finds the right Hard Drive device.where will that be in the Bios. What am I looking for. What if I just put a different HD and start over. Or that still won't work if something still wrongt in the bios? QUOTE from: sckrem on March 06, 2010, 09:01:19 PM

boot master failed.

Are you sure that's what it says? It doesn't say "master boot record"? Or anything along those lines?Does SYSTEM BIOS recognize and correctly identify the hard drive (with correct total capacity)?yes it says boot master fail. Quote from: dahlarbear on March 07, 2010, 03:15:26 AM
Does system BIOS recognize and correctly identify the hard drive (with correct total capacity)?
yes it seems that way Quote from: sckrem on March 08, 2010, 08:21:35 AM
yes it seems that way
1. What "exactly" does the BIOS report (or list for the drive)?
     a. Does it report it as an "IDE" or "SATA" interface?
     b. What drive "identification" string does it report?
     c. What total capacity does it report?

2. Which computer?
     a. Desktop, notebook (laptop), or netbook?
     a. Make and model name/number of computer if "brand" name; otherwise make and model number of motherboard?I've never seen that error message...
At least not phrased that way...

Solve : Windows XP not loading?

Answer»

I have Windows XP installed on my PC and it loads only in safe mode. When I start my PC normally, Windows XP does not load; I have on display on my screen. I changed the monitor, but the problem is still the same. What could be the cause and How can I solve the issue? What did you do before this? (any DOWNLOADS, installs, ect....)

Can you try performing a System Restore in Safe Mode?Actually I did not download anything before this. I tried System Restore in Safe mode but problem still the sameOk, so when you start the Computer, exactly WHAT happens?

Start it like:
I PRESS the power button and then the fans start spinning. The manufacturer logo comes on, ect.......

We need to know exactly what the symptoms are.OK! I switch on power. I get this message "Press F1 to continue or Del to enter set up". I press F1 and from this point there is nothing displayed on the screen. However if I press F8 after pressing F1 i get into safe mode and WIndows loads.Dell Setup? Strange....

You haven't changed any BIOS Settings or touched your hardware have you?

Also, do you know what the model of your computer is?No its not a Dell. I did not madify anything in BIOS. Unfortunately i dont know the model. Any error MESSAGES when you try to boot normally?

When you get the menu to choose to boot into Safe Mode, can you try Last Known Configuration?

Also, do you have the Windows CD?I get the warning "Hard disk failure may be imminent". I did not try Last Known Configuration. I have the Windows CD. Btw i tried a chkdsk but i got this message "The volume is in use by another process. Do you want scandisk to run at next startup". I said yes. AT next start up the scandisk was run. still the problem remainsStop Using The Computer Now!!!
Or you will risk loosing all your data.

Do you have another computer or access to another one?Unfortunately i dont have another computer Is there no other way out?If you cannot gain access to another computer (to put this current hard drive in as a slave to back up your files), I suggest GETTING CD's and/or USB Storage Devices and back everything important up in Safe Mode.
Just in case your hard drive is failing.

Solve : windows xp's problem with 4 Gig RAM?

Answer»

i have a pc with these details

CPU : AMD Athlon 4800 X2
M.B : Gigabyte GA-M52L-S3
VGA : Geforce 8600 GT 512 MB
RAM : 2x2Gig DDR2 kingstone =4 Gig
H.D.D : 320 gig maxtor

when i install windows xp sp2 and sp3 32 bit version or windows vista home PREMIUM 32 bit version . windows show 3 Gig RAM in system information whiles i have 4 Gig RAM
i SEE 4 Gig in RAM information in BIOS section also
I tested these ways:
1) i reduced sum of RAM to 3 and then 2 Gig and both windows showed 3 Gig and 2 Gig RAM correctly
2) i tested variant RAMs such as 4x1 gig rams too
3) i changed VGA too but even it did not work
4) i installed a windows 64 bit and it showed 4 Gig RAM correctly
and i dont know what must i do now
have u a suggest for repairing it
thank you very much 32 bit operating systems can only use a maximum of 4GB of memory.
Memory allocated or sued by graphics cards reduce the total amount that can be seen, also EVERY device uses a bit of RAM too.
In other words, it's a limitation of a 32 bit OS - the maximum you'll ever see is around 3.5GB.
Hope this clears THINGS up.

My hard drive is a Hitachi, but I have a netbook and it doesn't have a disk drive, what do I do? In case of a netbook, you can go to BIOS and change boot order, so external USB device is listed first.
Burn diagnostic program to USB flash drive and boot from it.Ok, I've changed the boot order on my netbook. I have put the hitachi diagnostics program on a memory stick. Am I supposed to install it on a working computer? Because it says it will delete everything?
Ok, I have another problem, when my memory stick is booting, these messages COME up on screen, are they error messages?:

PXE MOF: exiting PXE ROM

No, you're not supposed to install it on "any" computer.

Say what? Like Broni, I have to ask: Which program did you download?Ahhh...Hitachi, this one should be bootable:
- Download Drive Fitness Test v4.16 b00 (10.07.2009) - CD Image (Direct Link)Okay... They're trying to boot from memory stick (USB flash drive?). I don't know how you "burn" a CD Image as a bootable USB flash drive. (Does "ImgBurn" support that?)

If Original Poster (OP - Roberto172) has gotten past that obstacle, ignore my remark. If not, please let us know what your status is...Good question, as I never tried to burn .iso to USB stick, but it looks like it should be pretty straighforward: http://www.ehow.com/how_6012868_burn-iso_s-flash-drive.htmlWait, actually I did. I created bootable Ubuntu USB stick couple of weeks ago.Thank you, Broni. And with "ImgBurn" also... I'll have to GIVE it or one of the other links on that page a try. You're welcome I downloaded the hitachi hard drive diagnostic program. I have just installed imgburn, but I cannot see an option to burn .iso to USB stick. Also, how do I disable network booting? I cannot see an option for this.

Solve : Help! Researching for programs to create folders, and, programs to manage Info.?

Answer»

Help!

I work for a huge corporate - think... Office SPACE.

I just TRANSFERRED to the Marketing department where they have tasked me with going through 500+ folders with folders inside of these folders and organizing them by product line and type of document i.e. flyer, brochure, advertisement etc.... My estimate is there is over a 1,000 files

The whole SHARED server is an absolute mess.

I am using the ctrl + F to do a blanket search and am finding duplicates of file extension names.

It is a mixture of files pdf.'s, word, POWER point. Nothing is named in a UNIFORMED manner.

Can you give ideas on how to attack this project... what is the best way to get my arms around all the information?

Any ideas/ strategy or programs that are useful for managing folders would be great.

The end goal is to have everything organized into folders on a shared server and keep it organized.

Can you run batch files?

If you're not sure, open notepad, type 'MKDIR test' (without quotes) and save as TEST.BAT (making sure the 'Save as type:' box shows 'All Files', not text doc). Then locate it and double-click. If a black window opens and closes, and a folder named 'test' is created, then you can run batch files. If not, I can't help you.To search for duplicates, I think this could be very helpful: http://www.easyduplicatefinder.com/. For a review on it, see http://www.easyduplicatefinder.com/softpedia-review.html

Solve : Intermittent problems sending/receiving e-mail with Outlook Express?

Answer»

For the last couple of months, I've been having problems sending and retrieving e-mail via Outlook Express. I'm sometimes unable to connect to the server even though I can browse the Internet when this is happening. There’s no pattern I can figure out. All might work fine. Or the system might hang for 10-30 seconds before successfully sending/receiving. Or it might hang so long that it times out.

Because the trouble is intermittent, I know the e-mail account property settings within OE aren't the problem. Because it happens with two different e-mail accounts, I assume the problem isn't with the hosts – or with the ports. (Because it happens with two e-mail accounts and incoming + outgoing MESSAGES, three different ports are involved -- 8889, 110, & 587 –and I have periodic trouble connecting to all of them.)

This problem seems to have started right around the time that I switched from Verizon DSL to Verizon FiOS and received a new router: ActionTec MI424-WR - Rev. E. I persuaded Verizon to swap routers in CASE the unit was defective, but that didn't help. Otherwise, Verizon tech SUPPORT claims the problem must be with OE or XP – and, in any case, as long as I’m connecting to the Internet they can’t help.

Any thoughts? When you getting the hang up are you ABLE to ping your pop servers?

Haven't tried, but I sometimes do try to COLLECT my mail from the web-based version of the domain (presumably the same server?) -- and I'm always able to do so. The problem seems to be limited to OE.

If you create the new account the way you said you tried, you can just delete the program shortcuts (not the programs themselves). Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 18, 2008, 08:31:02 AM

Solve : CD-DVD drive?

Answer»

Cannot access CD-DVD. Computer will not auto-run disc's and when i went into "computer" the CD/DVD icon seems to have VANISHED. Only Local disc (C) and Control Panel displayed. Think it may be driver problem, however i do not have disc to reload even if it could be read! System is Windows 2000If you can establish make and model of unit you should be able to find a driver thru a search on the web.

But - when did this occur ... sudden? recent? Any other changes made? ETCI have met the similar problem before.A friend of me ,his cd-rom icon disappear,

first I restart his computer, during the booting I found the cd-rom is detected.
After the system enter the desktop.I open "My computer" the Icon still not appear there.
I go to "device manager" ,remove item under "DVD/CD-rom drivers",then restart the computer,
after booting up. On the system tray there popup a baloon says "find new hardware"

I just do this .I don't know if this could give any help.

btw, the cd-rom drivers ALWAYS were included in system disc, and when you install the system the drivers had been copyed to hard disk(in you system drive).
Just because of that the system could find the driver of new hardware and install it to system on my friend's computer.
Indeed drivers for ATAPI devices usually within a system but not sure with Win 2k - compared with XP - probably has suitable driver actually.

The remove idea could well WORK - forcing windows to 'rediscover' the item on reboot but tho I ran Win 2k a while ago ... not sure if it'll be quite as 'clever' as XP in a plug'n'play sense. Worth a try tho. Quote

forcing windows to 'rediscover'

Solve : HELP....I think I may have done something very bad?

Answer»

I'm in deep kimche and in need of some serious help, and more than likely will need to take my COMPUTER to a shop. Here goes:

I'm operating with Windows XP and lately my programs will be running fine then everything just freezes up. The only way out is to reboot. This is where I should have stopped and asked for help...but oh no...not me. I tried to run a SYSTEM restore, and guess what happened...it froze up in the restore proccess. I rebooted and nothing happened.

I put my windows xp disk in and reloaded windows naming in windowsb....now I can get on my computer but no programs work.....nothing, but I have all my files under the old documents and settings.

What can I do to get this fixed? Take it to the experts?Sounds like you have two installations of Windows on your computer now. In other words, you have a dual-boot configuration now. If I'm correct, you should see a screen during startup where you can choose which OS to boot. Do you see that? If not, then I'm apparently wrong about the dual-boot scenario.

Quote

now I can get on my computer but no programs work..
Do you even see all your programs on your Programs menu now? Yes it does. If I pick the one I just loaded it boots up with no problem. I can see my programs and files if I access C drive and go into documents and settings. I can open the files but none of the programs work, nor does my internet explorer. If I select the old windows XP on start up, I get this error: sys32\drivers\ntfs.sysSo you have a Windowswsb FOLDER (to which you boot) and an old Windows folder which you can see from explorer, is that correct? If so you have several options:

1) Use the new installation. To access old files you need to take ownership (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421). All programs will have to be reinstalled. Once you are happy that things are running the way you want them, you can delete the old Windows folder.

2) Reformat and start from scratch (first copy all of your files to off disc media using the "take ownership" method described above).

3) Try to repair your original install by booting to the XP CD and repairing the original Windows installation.I would like to try your 3rd option but now I'm stuck in the DOS mode...I think that's what you call it. All I see is Windows on a black screen. Can I repair from here?Windows on a black screen?yes
"Yes" isn't what I was looking for. I don't know what "Windows on a black screen" is. What happens when you boot and EXACTLY what do you see?sorry allen....I meant to say i have a black screen with WHITE letters and a prompt that shows

C:\windows>How did this happen? Last report was that you were booting to your new Windows installation. EXACTLY what happened since then?I tried to do option 3 provided earlier by putting my xp windows disk back into the drive and rebooting on the original loaded windows and reparing it. When I hit the r key it took me into the dos PROGRAM...and now I'm stuck in black and white. Okay. Wrong "r" key. Type EXIT and press enter and that will reboot. When you reboot to the Windows CD choose the SECOND repair option, not the first.OK...now it is asking for an administrator password....I don't recall setting one upPress ENTER
It takes me back to:

Solve : Restart at Windows Loading Screen?

Answer»

Alright, I apologize if this has been solved in another thread, but I just needed to know.

My younger brother has an HP Desktop computer. About 3 or 2 years old I think...

Anyhow, he enjoys turning the computer off by using the button instead of the proper shutdown procedures. This caused his computer to do the following:

1. The computer turns on.
2. The computer then shows a screen asking if they want to start Windows normally, under the last known good configuration, SAFE mode, safe mode w/ networking, or safe mode w/ command prompt.
3. No matter what is chosen, it then begins to load Windows XP.
4. Not too long once it starts trying to load, the monitor mentions something about going to SLEEP (as if the computer was off... But the light on the computer is still on.) and the computer restarts from 2.

Now, we managed to solve it once by SOMEHOW reinstalling Windows. However, the problem is happening again. And we don't REMEMBER how we managed to get lucky and reinstall windows.

So, how can I manage to get back to a point to reinstall windows or save his computer?

(Keep in mind, we didn't have to use any disc when we saved it last time...)The computer probably has a restore partition. I think that F11 is the key to access it on HPs. Tap F11 as the computer is starting up ( before windows loads).

However, you may not have to reinstall windows. If I were you the first thing that I would do in this situation is check BIOS to make SURE that the power saving options are turned off. They will be called suspend mode or S1, S3, etc. Turn those off or load the BIOS DEFAULT settings.

Solve : System speaker not working?

Answer»

First, I am talking about the speaker that beeps after POST on startup, not the speakers and associated components that play Beethoven.

History: I had this same PROBLEM when I first got this computer, an Acer Aspire 1640z (may it burn in everlasting hellfire.) ToggleKeys would not work, no matter what I did. I really depend on this for CapsLock as it's easier to remember which beep I heard last than whether I've hit it an even or odd number of times. And then one day many months later it just started working. It was after I had connected to the internet and enabled auto updates so I thought maybe somehow that had fixed it.

Now, after my recent go round with installing/uninstalling Service Pack 3, it has stopped working again. However, it is not ToggleKeys, because when I turn on SoundSentry the Title bar blinks. So I have narrowed down the problem to the System Speaker, which seems to have disappeared.

I FOUND a list of all the registry settings for this beast and what they are supposed to be, and all mine are SET as advertised.

On another site a fellow said to go to device manager and find System Speaker under System Devices and...I have no System Speaker under System Devices!

If anyone has any ideas, I would be grateful. Quote
