What has changed since the computer was set at an ideal resolution?
I re-installed xp.What's the make/model of your computer?

We'll need to download and install the chipset driver for your motherboard and install that first...Downlad and install both the chipset and video DRIVERS.You need the video CARD drivers. What video card do you use?

Any help?Did you recently install or update any hw, sw or drivers?

Open Device Manager. Click on VIEW - SHOW HIDDEN DEVICES
Any errors?Wow..!!! That was an incredibly amazing fast reply..! Thans for helping Allan...

Well.. I dont remember updating any s/w except for win SP3 updates that i regularly do.
With respect to h/w drivers, Yes. I did update my Nvidia video card's drivers to the most recent one. This was because I accidently deleted the c:\nvidia folder thinking that it contains only the setup files which was not the case. I was told that the drivers themselves were accessed only from there by the system.
Had the "Blue Screen of Death" errors showing up with reference being given to "nv4_disp.dll" which is the Nvidia driver..
Post the driver upgrade, the problem was fixed..First, the nvidia folder DOES only contain the setup files and CAN be deleted. Second, you did not answer my question about device manager. And the device manager thing..
There were no yellow exclamation marks if that's what you meant by an error..

But under the tab 'Portable Devices', my Nokia symbian phone was listed with a red cross over the 'tv LIKE icon'. I assume it just means the device isn't connected at present..Thought of answering the question in the second post... and quite frankly  did not expect a reply before that ..!! 1) The problem is almost certainly related to the driver update. Try rolling back the driver to the previous version. If you uninstalled the older driver before installing the new one, do you still have the older driver? If so, uninstall the new one and install the old one.

2) You said the system is rebooting. Go to System Properties - Advanced - Startup & Recovery Settings and uncheck "automatically restart". Next time there's an error you should get a blue screen error.) Post the entire contents of that error here.I have the recent memory dump de-bugged as below if that could help you..

Well, I dont have the old driver with me... Even if i did and installed it, i'm guessing I would get the nv4_disp bsod like before..
Nevertheless, do you suggest that I try out the second option first before having a driver rollback done?
Also, is the BSOD likely to stay all night? cuz I'm most likely to take a nap now..If the error generates a blue screen then yes, the error message will remain up until you "hard" reboot. After making the change above you'll need to reboot before it takes effect. Was the memory dump file above able to tell you anything? So far there have been no BSOD's...
but the same Dev_CBIDDRV error is being shown several times in the event logger...
any help? Are you saying there are no problems other than the entry in event viewer? STAY OUT OF THE EVENT VIEWERPretty sharp advice there..!
Okay.. let me then wait for the next possible BSOD..
btw.., can i remind you of the memory dump above?Hi allan.. Last night there came up the BSOD..
It had the words "Bad pool header"..

Are using an upgrade version of XP and is your cd a genuine MS disk with the coa?

Is your bios boot sequence set to boot from the cd rom first?

Please post any displayed error messages.

This has got absolutely nothing to do with installing Windows XP, in fact XP cannot be installed from within an MS-Dos environment.   You must boot from a genuine MS XP install or update CD which I SUPPOSE is what you paid out for at Best Buy.

If you boot into your old O.S. (ME) and then insert the disk into the drive you should be able to install XP. If the CD doesn't start up automatically then click on My Computer and select your CD drive and double click on the XP CD to start setup. Quote from: JJ 3000 on August 16, 2008, 04:23:02 AM

It doesn't quite work like that. You cannot Install Windows within Windows.
You will have to boot from the CD either way.JJ

The screen that I am getting is not the desktop all it says is::

c:\>

if I load the MS  XP  disc it just sits there... how do I get it to  "my computer"

BarryWhen you turn on your computer you will see a message that says to press a certain key to enter setup. This is usually an F-key or esc or del. Pay attention as it may flash very QUICKLY. Once you have entered setup you want to find BOOT ORDER or BOOT sequence or BOOT priority. You want to set your CD drive as the first boot device. You usually press the plus and minus keys to move you devices up and down. Once you have set your CD drive as the first boot device insert your XP CD and exit setup and SAVE changes.JJ

I turned of computer and restarted it....did not get an "F" instruction.... so I restarted
the computer hitting the delete  key over and over and got to the following screen::

    Compaq  Set up  Utility

Main      Storage    Security    Advance      English

System Information

Set time and date

detect drives and exit

set defaults and exit

ignore changes and exit

save changes and exit

It is asking to pick one ......

BarryPress the right arrow key to move over to advanced. Do you see BOOT or BOOT ORDER or anything like that?

P.S. TRY to keep this in the same thread. That way it will be a lot less confusing for the rest of us trying to help.JJ

I see the boot order and put it as the cd rom as primary........

You accidentally started a new topic with a reply to JJ3000, I merged the two together.

Ok, now that we have varified the CD Drive is set to boot first, restart the computer and it should boot from the CD automatically or it will prompt you to boot from the CD or not.Tried that it goes right back to starting ms-dos

ends up at the

Solve : PC could not be pinged from Server?

Answer»

A PC in the workstation could not be pinged from the server due to its firewall settings. What should I do?If you need to "ping" a workstation that's using the "Windows Firewall", you'll need to configure it to pass the necessary ICMP MESSAGE traffic.

To access:  START -> Run -> type "firewall.cpl" without quotes, then -> Advanced tab -> select "Local Area Network" and then its "Settings" BUTTON -> ICMP tab -> check "Allow incoming echo request".

Solve : Trouble after installing windows from usb-stick?

Answer»

Well, sometimes we either want or have to make a reinstall of windows, but it didn't tun out as I expected..

I have searched for answers, but not found any yet..

Lets continue; I don't know if I or the tools made something wrong, because:
1. Installer was acting weird
2. Installing was even slower than a CD install
3. Partition table is invalid
4. Some HAL file is missing

Here is what I did (at least what I can remember):

I started by downloading the latest version of Nlite and integrated serial, drivers, hotfixes and Sp3 into the project, saved it somewhere on a network harddrive

After that I downloaded Win2Flash and used the wizard to put it on the usb-stick

From Today:
Then, when I needed to reinstall windows, I noticed many weird things:

It seems to work at first, but then after the basic parts* has been used** I get an error, it says E:\ doesn't contain any valid partition.. ..But wait a sec, E:\ is the optical drive
But I know it's working properly, so I disabled it in BOIS

After that the installer would continue, and I found a new problem, it didn't find the 2 SATA Hardrives which is also working properly, so I made a ~60 GB partition on the IDE Harddrive and let the installer continue..
Nothing more weird yet, installer goes on as it usually do, later the computer is restarted and I continue with step 2, the "graphical setup" and I noticed that something was wrong, because installing WinXP from a CD takes about an 1 hour including configuration, reboots and that..

But.. ..step 2 took 2 hours to complete, and that is weird, as the motherboard and the device supports USB 2.0 and like never use USB 1.1 (it was slower than a CD Install  )
Since I didn't want windows to be on the IDE Harddrive, I installed Acronis Disk Director and moved the partion to one of the SATA Harddrives

After that I installed these: ZoneAlarm, ThreatFire, Ad-Aware and Firefox
One of them required a RESTART, so I did the restart..
After that "setup screen" the OS is supposed to load, but like 30 seconds later a message says "Invalid boot partition" or something like that***

Then I tried booting from the usb-stick and I tried "disk 1 partition 1" which gave me another odd message, something about the file HAL was missing
I also tried to use "disk 2, partition 2" and that worked, without any problem

* or what I should called them, they are the first to be used in "textmode" setup part
**I don't know what the installer does with them
*** Not sure as it was displayed in Swedish

Now the main problem is the awkward way to start windows:
1. Hold F8 to access the menu where I can select what device to boot from
2. Select the usb-stick and choose "disk 2, partion2"
3. Wait for windows to load
Then I can use it

After that, the message about HAL should be removed/fixed

And lastly, somehow make a BETTER installer and put it on the usb-stick

Any help to solve these issues would be appreciated

Useful Info:

Source CD: 32Bit WinXP Pro SP2 5.1 build 2600 - Swedish
Specifications:
ASUS M2N
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ running at 2.422 GHz (21% overclock)
ASUS GT220 1GB
Creative SB X-Fi eXtremeGamer
2x 80GB Segate Barracuda
1 Western Digital 320GB IDE
1 LG DVD BurnerI'd start with a genuine XP CD if it were me...Well, that would be the last thing I would do, as it takes several days to configure all settings correctlyAll of your problems are caused both by nlite as well as the different crap you put on the slipstream, all combined with the fact that your installing through a USB stick.

if you have a working CD drive, why are you using a USB stick anyway? Additionally, motherboards don't support USB 2.0. the only thing a motherboard, of any type, will support before drivers are installed is using USB keyboards and mice as PS/2 devices, and perhaps some USB 2.0 functionality for  booting. of course, once Windows starts installing it's drivers for USB mass storage they take PRECEDENCE, so if they only support 1.1 during boot  (which I believe is the case) then you will only get USB 1.1 speeds during the file transfers.

Therefore the "slowness" is probably the mass storage drivers being used by windows, which I doubt use USB 2.0 fully during setup.

Basically, this is a combinations of factors; First, the only things you really should be slipstreaming on an XP disc are Service packs and SATA drivers required during bootup. drivers for your motherboard, display, etc. Install those afterward.
Well, the reasons why I tried Nlite was: I wanted to have most stuff installed so wouldn't need to mess with all CD's I need to as they aren't included on the windows cd (obviously)

The things I was trying to slipstream was:
Service Pack 3
~20 Hotfixes
NetFramework 3.0
Drivers for:
Motherboard
GFX
Soundcard
Shared network devices

It would be less trouble if I could install it from the same drive/device instead of what I have done before, as it's 11 CD's with only drivers, tools, manuals and other for all devices (Only drivers is needed to make them work properly, so I tried to slipstream them)

And I can't use the DVD Drive, as I discovered the IDE Cable is broken and I don't have another one

I'll see if I can find a big box of 3.5" floppy discs I got - There might be some handy tools on themI would suggest that you bite the bullet and fix the cable then do a full reload off the DVD. After you have things the way to want get a USB drive and make an image.

Spoiler: I don't think it would fit on the usb stick, as it's 2GB and the windows folder is over 2 GBHow big of a stick would you need?

And no this is not a personal question!

What stick?...

...Well at least 4GB would be needed - And they aren't EXPENSIVE,so I could go buy an 8GB stick, it would be enough

And about the weird issues I had, well I borrowed a USB-CDROM and used "repair" and it works as it should nowGlad to hear your up and running again....

Solve : System File Checker (sfc/scannow)?

Answer»

1.) The command "sfc/scannow" is supposed to check all windows critical files, is this correct?
2.) When the dialog bar fully COMPLETES the box goes away with no explanation on what it repaired, found, or scanned, why?
3.) I would think If it does find ANYTHING wrong it should show this, also it should show the results even if nothing wrong was found correct?
4.) Wikipedia has a great explanation on how to USE this command or utility but how do I see the results... good or bad?
5.) Is there a "log" file of some sort I can find in %temp% or a cache folder?
6.) Is there a better program to check the integrity of the windows critical files?

-If "SFC" is designed to show results only when something wrong was found or needed to be corrected then this is not very efficient.

-Checking the Windows critical files is very important because if a hard drive receives a virtual error in the exact area of the disk that the critical file resides in, then the critical file will be corrupt or simply not work as well. If this happens to many areas of the hard drive, then your windows will slow down and in worse scenarios freeze. You will now not know why because you will scan for viruses, spyware, upgrade memory etc. and receive no positive results.

Does anyone have correct answers for the above 6 questions?1. Yes
2. If it doesn't ask you for Windows CD and it just closes, it means it didn't find any issues. That's for XP. VISTA, most likely, won't ask you for DVD, since it keeps backups for most system files.
3. See #2
4. See #2
5. Only in Vista and WIN 7
6. Nook thanks now,

1.) Where in vista/7 is the log file?
2.) If it asks for the disc this also can mean it doesn't have the files it needs for comparing, correct?
3.) If #2 is correct then how would we know on XP if there were files that needed to be corrected or not?
4.) There is no log file stored for the files scanned, repaired or in original state after using SFC in XP?Homework?come again?1. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
2. Two possibilities: file is missing, or MD5 number doesn't match (file corrupted, or infected)
3. If XP finds a problem, it asks you for a CD and it shows name of the file in question
4. No logVery good that helps thanks.
Specifically answer #3.You're welcome

Of course not. The link I posted is a one-time solution so that the problem does not reoccur.  Did you not carefully read it?  Visit it again and TAKE a careful look at it.  Does it seem to fit your situation?  If it's confusing, I suggest you go ahead and try the Fix this problem link shown there.

EDIT: Well, hold up before you try the Fix this problem link shown there. Where it says:
"When a file has the ".doc" file name extension, but the content is a plain text file or another kind of file that is not a Microsoft Word binary file, and that file is opened in Microsoft Word, you may receive the following error message up to three times before Microsoft Office Word successfully opens the file",
does that fit your situation?

Solve : How can I view Spam on Outlook Express 6??

Answer»

I never installed a filter, I assumed with XP, one was built in. I think my wife has been not receiving certain EMAILS and I was going to CHECK the Spam file/folder and I can't find one. Is there one? And is it possible to see what has been held, through some data files? I'm using OE 6 with XP HomeThere is no spam folder on Outlook Express 6.

If your wife's not getting emails, are you SURE they're sending to the email you've set up Outlook with?

Also, check the 'Folders' pane to the left, you might find it in there somewhere.

Turn off your PC, find another method of getting the internet, and head over to this post and post your problem here.

When there, discredit anything anyone without a 'Malware Removal Specialist' tag in their name says, and post your problem there.I do not have another computer to go to.. But I will go and post this there .. thanks so much.

Alan <><
These are really the key questions - did it just start happening or was it always like this? If it just started, what is new since the last time it worked properly (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?Windows XP sp2, norton anti-virus, yes it worked fine unti I tried installing windows live, then it started doing this.
Deleted windows live and the problem remained.
Tried going back, but no change.

Q.E.D.

First, a CD Drive IS an optical drive. It uses a laser. and it uses a a photosensitive detection mechanism to read. Optical.

Also Your post indicates that the solution would be in updating the driver. While your pedanticism that they have drivers is correct, it is NOT correct that any of that is relevant. Updating the driver will not help simply because there is nothing to update to. The "driver" used by every single Optical (CD, DVD drives) is the exact same driver. it's a Class driver designed to run Any CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.

Secondly, it would appear that there is some confusion over what the driver does in this particular instance. All drives send the host machine a signal when the drive door is closed; this signal inevitably is trapped by the Driver and immediately passed off to the operating system.

I really don't see how updating a driver could possibly help in this instance, given the fact that, as stated in the first post, the issue only occurs with blank discs. The first location on the system where there is any sort of branch based on wether the disk is empty would be within autoplay.

This link is no help either, since it states quite clearly "Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs". However, if we look closely at the original post, we see:

"Why does my computer (windows XP) reboot whenever I put a blank CD/DVD in the tray?"

whereas to match the scenario in question they would likely ask, what happened to their drive icon.

Rdefayette,

We have a very long explanation why replacing your corrupt driver will not solve your problem.  If I were you,  I would TRY replacing the driver. It cannot hurt and it might help.
The microsoft link is worth a SHOT also. :

Good luck.

Why does my computer (windows XP) reboot whenever I put a blank CD/DVD in the tray?
1.  Is it a successful reboot?

2.  Any indication of a blue screen (or FLASH of blue during the reboot cycle)?

3.  Disable Auto Restart (on system failure).  Start -> right-click My_Computer -> Properties -> Advanced tab -> Settings button within Startup and Recovery subsection -> uncheck "Automatically restart" within System failure subsection -> OK button -> OK button.

4.  Any memory dumps (crash dumps) on the system?  Look for subdirectory "C:\Windows\Minidump".

You may have to display "hidden" and "system" directories.  Open Windows Explorer window -> Tools -> Folder Options... -> View tab -> ensure "Display the contents of system folders" is checked; ensure "Hide protected operating system files" is NOT checked; ensure radio button "Show hidden files and folders" is checked -> Apply button -> Apply to All Folders button -> OK.

Solve : Windows media Encoder Series 9?

Answer»

Good day All,

I have just tried to download Windows Media Encoder Series 9. All went well until the download scree hit  - Installing the Windows Media Runtime Files -

Problem:
I have the installation screen stuck on  - Installing the Windows Media Runtime Files -.
The download is complete and the screen will not disapear.

I cannot use the progrram.

I cannot delete the program.

Any suggestions before I SHOOT this thing! LOL

Christiane
Hi there Christiane,

Boot up the computer in Safe Mode (Press F8 during boot), and try to re-INSTALL or remove the file again.

May I suggest using an alternative media player? I find that QUICKTIME is a very good video player, and doesn't use Windows Codecs, it uses it's own instead.

Download it here:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime
Thanks!

I would love to, but it's stuck in a loop re; It keeps on trying to download the Media Runtime Files!

I did try to restart my pc, but to no avail.... LOL

Christiane

Hello again Christiane,

Download HiJackThis and post a log file.

(Don't worry, it's safe, doesn't collect any info related to malware or ANYTHING of that nature).

http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/Tks for the suggestion...

I just tried to download the program and it tells me that another program is in the process of being installed...re: cannot download file and install another program!

This is fast becoming very aggravating!

ChristianeI know that this is most probalby not a good idea...But if I just pulled the plug.. Would it not just 'reset' things?.

ChristianeIf you posted a HiJackThis logfile, it will tell me what's running at startup. If something nasty is starting up, posting the logfile will help us find what's wrong with your PC. Like I explained, because the Windows Media Encoder Series 9 - Windows Media Runtime files were trying to download - and not getting anywhere re: stuck in a loop, I was unable to do anything else!

I tried to download the HJack, but the response was that it could not do so, because another program was downloading i.e. Windows Media Runtime files!

I tried to restart my pc, no go, the download was stuck there, and nothing would move.

Like really stuck in a loop!

So, what I did, was a System Restore. Did not have any choice because of the download was going nowhere (and that is a Microsoft download!).

I set the System Restore to yesterday, and hoped for the best. The pc did shut down finally, and did its thing, only to come back and tell me that it had been unable to restore to the point I had set...and was back to the same point re: today....BUT...the good thing is that the download is now GONE!!!

In other words, it is not trying to download anymore!!!! And the download screen is gone.

Now, I will go ahead and remove the darn program and hope all is well!

Christiane

Ok, like I was saying, I was going to remove the program from my pc, but as I have discovered it is not showing in the Add Remove program.

Now, it is showing in the c/programs files - Can I just go ahead and delete that thing? It caused me enough problems!

CHRIS Hi Chris.

I would suggest trying to do a system restore at this point in time, back to the time when Windows Media Player runtime was installed. The system restore I did (about 1/2 hour ago)  went through its motions, only to come back with a message as what it had not worked...i.e. no restore done.

All it did was to remove the download screen...(which is what I wanted...)

So, do yiou mean to bring it back to when I download the program?  If I may ask why?

Chris

Solve : Hard Drive capacity shrunk after performing restore.?

Answer»

I have 40 GB Emachine T2542 Desktop with Windows XP. I did a restore, now my only drive shows:

2.57 GB USED
3.19 GB FREE
5.77 GB TOTAL CAPACITY

I tried restoring it again with the same results. This happened to me a couple years ago when it was still under warranty and tech support resolved my problem, but I don't remember how he did it exactly.

Please help! When you say restore, are you referring to System Restore or a clean install of Windows? Quote from: JJ 3000 on March 11, 2010, 10:18:46 PM

Not just a System Restore to an earlier time. I did a complete restore using the 2 restore disks it came with ...back to the original factory settings.May I offer a suggestion. After many mistakable and goofs, I have learned that when it doubt get another Hard Drive and try it again. Using a blank HDD the is nothing to lose but some time spent learning how it works. I agree.  Honest to God this sounds like a bad sector problem though, so in my opinion you're kind of screwed.  How old is the HDD anyway?  Sounds old enough to suffer from bad sectors to me, and I can't think of any other way you'd just suddenly lose space after doing anything.

So yeah, I'd back up what little might be on this HDD and then stick in a new HDD and install onto there.1.  Wild GUESS.  Maybe there was a "hidden" restore/recovery partition (which generally runs about 6 GB) and SOMEHOW the restore/recovery discs picked that partition in which to load the operating system.

2.  Disk Management.  Use Windows "Disk Management" utility to view the properties, partitions, and free space (or UNALLOCATED space) of the disk.

Physical disk should appear left hand side, bottom half of display -  probably as "Disk 0".  What does it say there, something like:
     o  Basic
     o  37.25 GB
     o  Online

Does the missing capacity show up as free (or unallocated) space on the graphic representation of the drive?

To access:  Start -> Run -> type "diskmgmt.msc" without quote, press .Download treesize to see what's going on: http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml

Computer's maybe 6 years old. It was bottom of the line when I bought it. Prefer not  to put any money into this one if I can avoid it. It's a second computer my kids use for basic stuff ... word processor, YouTube and storing music for Zune (this is what takes up the most space). Worse comes to worst, I'll deal with what I have and maybe get a flash drive for their music or something. When I get called back to work (hopefully soon), I may just replace it.

Your HDD was not setup properly on the recovery...
You have 2 choices:
Use Disk Management to add the unallocated space to C:
Start over and at setup delete the partitions and create 1 40G partition.the reason is simple: the ghost image that we restored in the other thread from the recovery disc was set to 5.77GB; so that's all that was used.

Anyway, Windows XP's disk management is limited, and (AFAIK) offers no way to extend a volume.

However, the command-line equivalent, DISKPART, does.

try this:

Start->Run type "cmd" and press enter.

Now, in the command window, type

Code: [SELECT]diskpart
diskpart starts... now, use the following. The prompts should match what you see:

Code: [Select]DISKPART>Select Disk 0

Disk 0 is now the selected Disk.

DISKPART> Select Partition 1

Partition 1 is now the selected Partition.

DISKPART>extend

Once DISKPART finishes extending the volume, type "EXIT" to return to the command prompt, and exit again to leave the window. I don't know if a reboot may be necessary. Quote from: patio on March 12, 2010, 10:22:01 AM
Use Disk Management to add the unallocated space to C:

I used Disk Management like you suggested and used the unallocated space to create an E drive and it did the job. Then I read BC_Programmer's Diskpart suggestion, deleted the E drive and tried his idea. That woked too.

Either way, I'm back in business. Problem resolved. Thanks to all once again. Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 12, 2010, 10:29:20 AM

Anyway, Windows XP's disk management is limited, and (AFAIK) offers no way to extend a volume.

Of course it does. You can extend volumes with XP and windows 2k pro. XP professional even supports dynamic disks. Yes, you can extend volumes within Windows XP Disk Management; but the "rules" are not simple and prevent its application in the case presented by the Original POSTER (OP).  They do not permit you to extend the system or boot partition (and I'm amazed "diskpart" command permits it).  (At least that's the answer they want on the WinXP certification test.)

See How To Use Disk Management to Configure Dynamic Disks in Windows XP.
Quote
NOTE:

    * You can only extend NTFS volumes, or volumes that are not yet formatted with a file system.
    * A volume can be extended only if there is enough available disk space.
    * If you upgraded from Windows 2000 to Windows XP, you can extend simple and spanned volumes only if the volume is created on a dynamic disk in Windows XP. Simple or spanned volumes that result from a basic to dynamic disk conversion in Windows 2000 cannot be extended.
    * You cannot extend the system or boot volume.

Solve : black sceen with: media failure, check cable/ operating system not found.?

Answer»

Hi all experts, im so frustrated rite now n really need a help! (i did tried 2 search 4 the problem in the forum but coudnt find any thing SIMILAR).

notebook model: Intel Dell mini inspriron 910.

On sunday nite, it worked just totally normal at first, then after i put it in standby for about 2 hours, i found it already turned off by itself. So i tried to turn it on but it didnt start up like normal, all i got was a black screen showing:

"Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 082)
Copyright (c) 1997-2002 Intel Corporation

For Realtek RT8101E/8102E PCI-E Ethernet Controller v1,08 (080408)
PXE-E61: media test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: exiting PXE ROM.
Operating system not found."

As this mini dell doesnt have a cd rom so i bought an external optical drive n tried 2 re-instal the operating system cd. but when the windows set up got to the step of choosing the ITEM to set up windows xp on, there was a box show:

" 8057 MB disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi

and when i hit enter, it came up another screen say :

Aproblem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you.ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. if this screen appears again, follow these steps:

check to be sure u have adequate disk space....(and some more message)

So i thought it might help if i plug in an external hdd n choose to set up windows xp on the hdd. but after the set up finish, it reboot the conputer , i thought it wud work again but actually the windows xp didnt start, n it keep repeating the windows set up over n over again.

I agree, where did you leave it?  If it was dropped or it overheated that could have damaged it.

If you don't want to OPEN it up yourself you'll have to GET it fixed, because it sounds to me like your netbook has cashed in its last checks. Thanks guys!

I dropped it twice lol but that were long ago n it was still fineafter that, but before this damage, there was nothing special happen though.
So u guys rekon it has a bad hdd n so how do i got it replaced? is there any where i can BUY another hdd? like in the computer shop? Looking at your model I realise something now I didn't earlier, your netbook is 100% without HDD!

It uses an SSD (a Solid State Drive).  In particular it needs to be a mini PCI-e 8GB+ SDD.  You need 8GB or more because Windows just won't run well at all without it.  Do a search on Amazon or Google Shopping.  Unfortunately it will cost £40-50 ($60-80).

I reckon it's broken due to the frailty of these things, when you get a new one you'll have to be very careful installing it.

Solve : Missing memory?

Answer»

Is there anyway in XP to find out what's using up my memory, besides what Task Manager says?

If I TOTAL up the memory being used as is listed in Task Manager 'processes', and the total comes to 200mb, when I check in the 'performance' tab, it TELLS me PF usage is over 500mb, and that usage seems to be confirmed by the slow processing, as I only have 512mb ram.

How do I find what's using all this memory?

I've defragged, run AV, and Spybot, and unplugged my DSL to see if it was an external drain, but it's still the same.

Any suggestions would help. ThanksPF refers to "page file" (virtual memory), so it has nothing to do with your "real" RAM usage.
RAM usage depends mostly on number of startups and a number of open programs.
Surely another 512MB of RAM would help.

As for startups...

Download Autoruns for Windows: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
No installation required.
Simply UNZIP Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.
Go File>Save, and save it as AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
You must select Text from drop-down menu as a file type:

Attach the file to your next reply.

Thanks Broni, I finally had a chance to do as you suggested.

the report is attached.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]It looks like you're running two firewalls, PCTools and ZoneAlarm. This is not a good idea. You have to uninstall one of them.
In fact, since, you don't have that much of RAM, I'd uninstall both of them and I'd turn Windows firewall on.
I'd also uninstall Spybot, which is know for slowing computers down.
As better alternatives, you can use:
- Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (trial VERSION is fully functionable): http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
- SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition: http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

Now, let's disable some unnecessary startups (no actual programs will be removed.

Re-run Autoruns, click on "Logon" tab and UN-check following entries:

+ "eSnips"
+ "HP Software Update"
+ "HPBootOp"
+ "PCDrSmartMonitor"
+ "SunJavaUpdateSched"
+ "TkBellExe"
+ "Microsoft Find Fast.lnk"
+ "Office Startup.lnk"
+ "Uniblue ProcessQuickLink 2"

Restart computer.

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on START button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.
Well, right out of the gate, I tried to uninstall ZA, it says it can't locate dll library and specifies 'vsutil.dll (WSEInit) could not be found', even though I found the file in the ZA folder twice, both in the diagnostics and the repair sub folders.

I get the same message if I try to uninstall through 'add and remove' or the ZA uninstall tool.Try Revo: http://www.revouninstaller.com/
If it still doesn't work, we'll find other ways.Just a bump to thank Broni.  Revo worked fine. System response has improved and I think I'm getting the best I can expect without additional ram.

PF usage has dropped, but still at 460mb.I'm glad, it worked and thanks for posting back Is it possible for a computer to have enough RAM so that there is no need for virtual memory? Quote from: Doug on March 13, 2010, 09:02:21 AM

Yes and no. Without getting into all the technical aspects, you should not disable the pagefile in Windows. I know some people, who disabled page file, but personally, I have no idea, what's the reasoning behind it.

Solve : Windows updater will not install?

Answer» PLEASE help! My daughters laptop will not allow the windows updater to INSTALL. I can download updates by going to the website, but without the updater I cannot set the computer to run auto update.  Every time we try it gets almost all the way through the installation and then I get that message that it failed.

I've tried to work with Microsoft but I didn't get anywhere. Could you please help?

SaxyladyI should also let you KNOW that we are running SP3. The updater was working fine in November and then decided to quit. When we decided to install the latest updater is when the updater wouldn't install.
Are you running the lastest version of Internet EXPLORER 8? Also, are you updating your computer using Internet Explorer? Make sure you are; Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome don't support Windows Update. I am running Firefox on both computers. The automatic updates work fine on the desktop.  I've GONE into IE on the laptao and tried to install the updater and it will not install. I can manually update by going to Microsofts website and finding the new updates, but cannot install the updater (the program that looks for the updates that I need to install).

Solve : Stack overlow at line: 104?

Answer»

As per usual, I don't know if I'm posting this in the right place.  I tried doing a search of this website, but I didn't understand how to use the information I saw.

Recently, when I go online, I sometimes get a popup that reads:

Message from the webpage:
Stack overflow at line: 104

If you try to close the message it pops right up again and since you can't do anything while the message is up I have almost no choice but to reach for the power button.  (The other choice is to move the message around on the screen so it's right next to some other control button - X to close the window or something to open a new tab and mouse VERY QUICKLY from the x to close the message to the control to close the window or open a new one/ or tab .

The information on this website says to go to config.sys and change the amount of stack [memory?].  I typed config.sys in "Run" but I don't know how to find the place I need to go to check the amount of Stack I have or to change it.  I don't know what is being "stacked" or why I'm GETTING this message now.  Since I don't know what the stack is, I don't know if there's anything I can do to reduce my stack needs.

Mods, if my quetion is in the wrong place on the forums, please move it to the right place.Download and install;
CCleaner
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner

Clear your internet cookies and do a registry clean (just in case) with Ccelaner.
Should be fine.
If it doesn't work try a new Internet browser.1.  Which website(s) generate the "stack overflow" message?  Is it always the same message "Stack overflow at line: 104"?

2.  Which browser were you using?  Have you tried a different browser?

3.  Which operating system version (and service pack level)?1) Ccleaner will not help.
2) Does this happen on multiple web sites or only one?
3) Does this happen with all browsers or only IE? If you haven't tried other browsers, do so now.
4) When you get this problem solved you'll need to repair the damage you've been doing by using the power button to shut down. The way to do that is to boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r

This is one example.
But as it mentions there could be many reasons this stack error is happening.

I MENT ADD & REMOVEIn the Add & Remove Windows Components section you will see those updates and you should KEEP the Update, Security, Hot Fixes, and Windows Genuine Advantage.

Your Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 is a very old version and security hole which should be removed / updated. Some games and applications use .NET, but I recommend getting a later version.

Microsoft Sliverlight is optional plugin for Internet Explorer, some websites use Silverlight, but are very few and it can be removed if wanted.

Microsoft Visual is either the Studios for programming development or the C++ runtime which is required for some games and applications to run. I recommend you keep that.

If you are trying to free up space, use a program like Advance System Care to GO through and remove the update backups, temporary files, and other junk.

Solve : multiple tabs disappear?

Answer»

Recently my browser started to repeatedly lose the ability to support multiple tabs. In Internet Explorer 8, I click on the drop-down menu arrow on the right side of the Command Bar's Home button, select Add or Change Home Page from that drop-down menu, and then select "Use the current tab set as your home page" in the Add or Change Home Page dialog box. Then I launch another instance of the browser and close the original one. Then I've got multiple tabs. Sometimes they'll still be there the next time I boot up, but after a couple times, they're gone again. I have an installation of Windows that’s only a few weeks old (so I doubt any files are corrupted), and all my antivirus and antimalware software tells me I’m as clean as a whistle. How do I fix this?
BTW, here is what's selected in IE | Tools | Internet Options | General tab | Tabs | Settings:

Enable Tabbed Browsing
Warn me when closing multiple tabs
Enable Quick Tabs
Enable Tab Groups
Always open pop-ups in a new window
A new tab in the current window
I'm not sure I understand your issue.  Normally, IE will open with just one tab.  Additional tabs can be OPENED several ways. One is to click on the button to the right of the open tab(s).  Another is Ctrl/T.  Yet another is to right click on a tab and select New Tab.  Another is to select File, New Tab.

If you're thinking that IE should remember what tabs you have open when you close IE and then open those same tabs the next time you start IE, you're wrong.  IE does not support that feature.  Firefox does, which is one reason Firefox is my default browser.Try this, go to internet explore 8, Internet options, then put your web addresses in the box home page then Apply. Reopen internet explorer 8, the web pages should be there.
Good luck

I tested that and find that it works. So, if he wants to open the same pages each time he opens IE, that should work.  I was assuming the pages vary from one time to another and that he wanted IE to open the pages he was VIEWING when he last closed IE.  This is what Firefox can do. Good point I must admit I don't use Internet explorer 8 only use it if I have problems the other program. I use google CHROME as it works quicker for me.

Bob, I see you posted your question in another forum.  Yet, you have not clarified for us what you want to achieve.  You have not responded to my comments about how IE works.  Now, how about responding and clarifying what you want to achieve.  I set up 3 home pages as twizzle had described. Clicking on the Home button shows all 3 of them, but only one can be opened at a time because somehow multiple tabs repeatedly becomes disabled. And of course, nor can I open in a new tab any other WEBPAGE from the Favorites list - I have to open it in the current tab or in a new window. So, what I want to achieve: I want to be able to navigate among multiple webpages, all simultaneously loaded into the same browser window, but each one in its own tab. Simple as that.

Someone suggested that the problem could be caused by a browser add-on, but I was unable to confirm that, since right at this moment multiple-tabs is enabled (by the method I described previously), so there's no difference to be seen between running Internet Explorer in No-Addon mode or in "regular" mode.

Any help would be most appreciated.Let's establish a basic fact.  Do you know how to open IE, which will have a single tab when first opened, and open additional tabs in that window?  If so, please state how you do it.soybean:

IE will have only a single tab when first opened only if you haven't entered multiple home page URLs into the list in IE | Tools | Internet Options | General tab | Home page (as I have).

And whether you have a single or multiple tabs, you can always open a new one by clicking on the unlabelled tab thing to the right of the single tab or bunch of tabs, but then you'll have to get some desired URL into the address bar.

And of course you can open a new tab by right-clicking on a Favorite or a link and selecting Open in New Tab.

Quote
If you're thinking that IE should remember what tabs you have open when you close IE and then open those same tabs the next time you start IE, you're wrong.

Didn't say anything LIKE that (read what I said again), didn't mean anything like that.

Do I detect a surly tone here?OK, as a regular user of Firefox, I confess I was not familiar with setting multiple home pages in IE.  I've now tried it. I've set 3 different pages to open when IE opens.  I've closed and opened several times and the pages appear (3 tabs) as they should.  My settings in Tools | Internet Options | General tab | Tabs | Settings are the same as yours.  So, I have no clue at present as to what may be causing your IE to lose those pages.

Have you deleted browsing history recently?  If not, you might try that and see whether it makes any difference.Another thought: You might reset all IE settings via Tools | Internet Options | General tab, and click the Reset button. Quote

Solve : Where is a 7-zip file saved to??

Answer»

I right-clicked a folder and used the 7-zip compression program but I cannot find the resultant compressed file.  I did a search and nothing turned up.  What would be the best way to find the compressed file?Do it again and this time watch where it's saved (there should be a message within the program). Otherwise, check for SUB-folders in the 7-zip program or just do a search of the hd.The program says this:  which looks like a temp file.  It doesn't show up in a search.

C:\ DOCUME -1\USERPC...D.tmp\the Kinks.7zGo to C:\Documents and Settings and look for a sub folder starting with the name USERPC...  the name of the saved file is the kinks.7z.

In the future, change the destination folder to one of your choosing in 7-zip's options. There's no files in the userpc folder with name I'm looking for.The name of the folder us userpc(something).tmpAttached is a screen shot of the program as it compressed the file. There was no temp file folder inside userpc

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Here's what's in user pc

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Try WinRAR?
It'll sure solve your save LOCATION problem.
I didn't SAY it was inside userpc. It is a sub folder of Documents & Settingsenter %TEMP% in the addressbar. The file is in a folder within the %TEMP% folder, and the folder has a "tmp" extension.

Or even better- use one of the other 7-zip options in the menu that allows you to choose the save location (Compress To...) I believe is one of them. What do you mean "within the ADDRESS bar"?

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin] Quote from: jonnyD on March 16, 2010, 03:49:46 PM

What do you mean "within the address bar"?

As in enter %TEMP% in the address bar, and NOTHING else. When I choose the folder I want to compress and right-click and choose 7-zip, the two options for "compress to" are:

Compress to "The Kinks.7z" and email

or Compress to "The Kinks.zip" and email

I've now done both of those.  I just can't locate either .7z or the .zip folder.  They don't show up in %TEMP% either. Quote from: jonnyD on March 16, 2010, 04:05:06 PM
They don't show up in %TEMP% either.

Nobody said they would. I said that they are within a folder INSIDE of the %temp% folder. Either that, or in APPDATA%.

whatever the CASE- just do a search for the file using the search tool.

Solve : desktop.ini on client?

I'm at WORK and ONE of the clients on the domain has a desktop.ini notepad that opens on startup.  I've fixed this in the past by de-selecting it in MSCONFIG/startup. when I log in under my username, the desktop.ini is in startup and de-selected, but when I log in under the user, it still comes up, and the user doesn't have rights to bring up msconfig.  Is there another WAY to remove these?DO NOT use msconfig to manage startup programs.

Download and run Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel or delete the item from it's registry location (which Startup Control Panel will do for you).thanks for the help, but why shouldn't i use msconfig? It is a diagnostic utility designed for troubleshooting. When you uncheck a startup item you are essentially running in diagnostic mode. Quote from: Atari7800 on March 16, 2010, 08:13:28 AM

thanks for the help, but why shouldn't i use msconfig?

Best explanation i ever read:

Quote
The reason is because with msconfig and Hardware PROFILES, you can disable services that may be vital to boot your system. With the management console (services.msc) you cannot. Also, msconfig, while unchecking the box, is disabling the service.

The "Disable All" button also scares me. It should not even be there as no reason exists to justify disabling "everything."

Not "allowing" people to use msconfig reduces the flames and technical support questions in my inbox from people that fail to read the descriptions I offer with each service and the warnings I attach to them.

hard is 20 gb only ram is 512 mb ram  what are you trying to say/askI think he bought a used PC with a 20GB HDD and 512MB RAM, and he partitioned the HDD. After (or during?) the OS installation (Windows I assume) he noticed that the system is running slow. He was advised by someone else that an OS ALREADY exists on the HDD/partition and that might be the cause of the poor PERFORMANCE. He wants to make the PC to run smoothly.

It's impossible to give a solution without more details about the setup, but a few thoughts:

(1) Hardware problem. A 20GB DRIVE WENT out fashion ~ 5 years ago, and probably the one in the system has seen considerable action and is not in good shape. A HDD replacement may be necessary.

(2) Insufficient RAM. Up the RAM to 1GB atleast.

(3) Reformat the drive, remove all partitions (no point partitioning a 20GB drive) and reinstall Windows. Install/update all the drivers.

Can't think of anything else at this stage.

Not sure how in the World you can assume those things...

How 'bout we wait for more details ? ?

Im running windows XP. My C drive has only 4% left on it and when I try to defrag it tells me I need 15%. Is it posible to TRANSFER anything over to my D file? I have alot of room on that. Sure, go ahead. Any except programs. Better yet, Go to System Properties - System Restore and disable system restore (NOTE: as soon as you do this all restore points will be deleted). That will free up a lot of space. Then you can back up your drive using disc imaging software. After you do what you want, you can re-enable system restore if you so choose.

Also CHECK your temp folder, clear the Temporary Internet Files Folder, and make sure the recycle bin is empty.1.  Disk Management.  Use Windows "Disk Management" utility to view the properties, partitions, and free space (or unallocated space) of the disk.

To access:  Start -> Run -> type "diskmgmt.msc" without quote, press .

     a.  C: Drive
          (1)  What is the total capacity of the "C:" drive?
          (2)  If your "paging file" is allocated to the C: drive, what is its current size?  What do you want its maximum size to be?
          (3)  If you have "System Restore" monitoring the C: drive, what percentage of the disk is it allowed to consume?
          (4)  How much space is consumed by "C:\Documents and Settings" or its subdirectories.

     b.  D: Drive
          (1)  What is the total capacity of the "D:" drive?
          (2)  How much free space is available on the drive (percentage or GBs).
          (3)  Is this a restore/recovery partition or setup for "data" storage?

2.  Yes, it's possible to transfer "stuff" to the "D:" drive; but let's find out what you're working with first. Quote from: dahlarbear on March 15, 2010, 06:03:13 AM

          (4)  How much space is consumed by "C:\Documents and Settings" or its subdirectories.

What difference would this make? Users should NOT try to relocate the Documents and Settings folder. Some of the subfolders may be moved "off" the system/boot drive.  If it's necessary to "wipe" and reinstall the operating system at a later date, you won't lose that data (depending upon user skill and install CD used).

As you probably know, "Tweak UI 2.1" may be used for this (My Computer -> Special Folders).Well yes, you're correct that a couple of sub folders can be moved (ie, my documents). But unless there are a lot of music or video files that generally won't free up much disk space. BTW, it's very easy to move those folders without a 3rd party utility (just right click & move ).What is on D:? If it's the recovery partition, then it's best to leave that alone and not move any files there. Better to back up to an external medium such as DVD or USB HDD.

Run a disk cleanup to get some drive space back. Right click the drive in My Computer >  Properties > Disk cleanup. Delete the temp files, temporary internet files and clear the recycle bin, but don't compress files.

You can also try third party defrag utilities (not free, mind you) that defrag in very low space. The one I use (Diskeeper 2010) works perfectly in as low as 3-4 % free space in auto defrag mode. It also DEFRAGS system files so you can do a boot-time defrag and then leave it on auto defrag so that an otherwise potentially fragmented MFT and/or Page file does not interefere with normal defrag. You can grab the 30-45 day free trial versiosn from their site for your purpose since they work just like the full versions do.DisKeeper LITE is still available FREE...only COMPONENT crippled is the scheduler...
It can be found at majorgeeks...

Solve : Windows XP reports the drive full when it's not even half full and no bad sector?

Answer»

I am trying to move files between drives and/or computers.

When I try to move files between my drives Windows XP reports that the drive is full.  I have a dual core 3 with 250gb hd and I haven't even put 100gb on it.  I have done all the cleanups, etc. and don't have any bad sectors.

I tried to save the file to my ipod and got the same message.  The ipod has 70gb free.  I was going to use it as a flash drive and move the files to another computer.

The (VIDEO) files that I am trying to move are about 4gb.

Look in Disk Management and see what it says about free space, and if there is any unallocted space. Quote from: Broni on August 13, 2008, 06:15:31 PM

It says I have all of the disk available and the REMAINDER free but I didn't notice allocated space; I wil check that.  ThanksActually, you shouldn't have un-allocated space. That could cause lack of space problem.
What is EXACT error message? The message is "cannot copy 'filename':  there is not enough free disk space"How big is the file, or you can't copy any file? Quote

Can you try copying them one at a time (or like in a group of about 100-200mb)Thanks, Carbon. It must be bed time, since I stopped seeing correctly...LOL

I suspect, your hard drive is in FAT32 format. There is 4GB limitation there. The answer.  Thank you mucho! So you got the data transferred? No, but now at LEAST I know why.  I don't have the xp disk (tiger direct didn't include that in the deal) so I'm stuck with the fat32.  I would like to do NTSC but don't have a disk.  Thanks for the info.  I was trying to do files over 4g.You can split those files to parts smaller, than 4GB.
I use GSplit: http://www.gdgsoft.com/gsplit/I can't understand why Tiger Direct would sell the computer with FAT32 on it in the first place.  And then, when I called up to ask what the problem was they told me that they don't support after 30 days.  Really poor service.  I won't be using them again.  I really appreciate the help you guys have given. You're welcome You shouldn't need an XP CD to convert from FAT32 to NTFS...
Tiger Direct will ship you a restore CD however if you yell loud enough.

Solve : Disaster caused by XP Pro Upgrade and SP3?

Answer»

I upgraded  my XP Home to XP Pro using the upgrade option, which I then proceeded with the MS upgrades - all looked quite sucessful until I tried to use my internet explorer. It was coming up on a home page OK but when I tried to go to another address it forced an open new window trying to duplicate the original window and also tryingto access the address I was trying to access.  End result = not responding requiring shutdown.  After several hours on the phone with microsoft not being able to resolve the issue through roll backs and other methods, I then did a re=install of xp pro but chose the fresh INSTALLATION and consequently have lost all my existing data, program files, mail etc etc from my current user, as it has created a new system.  I have many programs that I have paid for over the internet from downloaded programs in particular nero 8 with all the add in licences, and now cannot access any of it or reinstall my exisiting backed up programs.  Can anyone please advise how I can transfer all the exisiting previously installed programs, and emails from outlook express, as they still exist on a user tree on my harddrive- but WONT operate under the new installation of xp pro - I would be most appreciative of anyones help here as microsoft doesnt seem to have a clue.
kindest regardsJust a note for the future:
If you can get a copy of the SOFTWARE you purchase on a CD, this is always a good option, or at least backing up the installer files to an external drive (whether that be an external HDD, or Flash drive) with the serial/key numbers along with them.

Second:
What manufacturer is your computer? HP and Compaq have issues with SP3.

If you can install XP Pro without installing SP3, then go ahead and so. Once you get that done, we can assist you in SPECIAL installation procedures of SP3 for Compaq/HP if thats the type of computer you own. Once a re-install is initiated unfortunately it wipes any existing data from the drive...
A data RECOVERY co. is your best bet but they are expensive...
Are you saying you have no original CD's for your expensive programs ? ?

Solve : Getting Core 2 Quad to work with XP?

Answer»

Hello. First off, here is my computer build:

Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40ghz
Phoenix AwardBIOS (LATEST update)
2gb Kingston DDR2 RAM
2x XFX GeForce 8600 GT (SLi mode)
(Currently running Windows Vista against my will due to the problem I have)
Any other specs needed just ask

Okay, heres my beef. I just got this C2Q the other day and popped it into my new mobo (ECS EliteGroup NF650iSLIT-A). I tried to install Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 with it. First half of install is fine (the half you do before system restarts and it goes into software/driver setup). It goes to load XP for 2nd half of install and every TIME I will get "Error Loading OPERATING System". Friend of mine thought it was BIOS not supporting to C2Q, so i flashed my BIOS (Phoenix AwardBIOS v6.00PG latest revision--2-13-08 I think). That still didnt do the trick. Not sure this would have any effect but I am INSTALLING Windows XP Pro SP2 onto an IDE hard drive (80gb Seagate Barracuda). I tried installing XP Pro sp2, XP Pro 64-bit and finally succumbed to installing Vista (32-bit Home Premium). Vista seemed to work flawlessly. If theres another way out of using Vista and installing XP, Id love to, due to Vista's resource hungry ways and just utter evilness, lol. So please, help me with this problem because I dont wanna get stuck using Vista!!I have a Intel board that tells me that if I wont to install any thing other than Vista I have to go into BIOS and change SATA A's to IDE then you can load any thing you wont. May be you have to do the same thing for your board. I would go to co of the board and ask them what to do. Repair Install of XP...Nope, that didnt work at all, didnt even get a repair option. Looks like im stuck with vista How could you not get a Repair option ? ?
Is this a legitimate XP CD ? ?

Did you follow ALL the instructions ? ?I sure hope its legit, lol. Its a Dell original cd with XP Pro SP2 on it. Normally, from past experiece with xp, on a fresh install, I havent ever had to repair nor chose that option. I always see the system recovery tool, which in part sorta repairs things, but you do it manually. Im not sure what is wrong. I thought maybe that my IDE based hard drive was the issue, so i replaced it with a SATA hard drive. I went to install XP and yet again it gave the same problem with being unable to load the operating system. Ive gotten the latest bios update from my mobos site (ECS Elitegroup NF650iSLIT-A). My quad core works just fine as well as every other piece of hardware inside. Im currently testing some new ram I bought yesteday because one of them is bad (I keep getting BSODs pertaining to my memory) but thats irrelevant to this topic. But still, I seriously dont see what the problem is. Gah! Im starting to accept the inevitable to just use Vista, because for some strange reason thats the only OS that itll boot to. But to keep the topic fresh, I am still wanting to desperately use XP Pro!

***FINALLY. Problem solved. I stumbled across a link I found through Googling my problem. A person with the same problem posted in a different forum on that site and someone mentioned to change the hard drives from CHS to LBA. XP booted up and got half way through install then BSODed out on me cuz bios.inf was corrupt or missing. As of right now im using the REPAIR option that I never saw before and now I know why. It never recognized windows being installed so there wasnt anything to repair. But as of now, ill keep you posted on whats up. For now, the problem with XP not booting up is solved!

Solve : Windows minimizing unexpectedly?

Answer»

I RUN Windows Vista Home Premium and just lately I've had a problem where I open a window, doesn't really matter what program and the window MINIMIZES without me doing it. I try to open a picture and it opens and minimizes, try to open an email and it minimizes. I go back and forth fighting this constantly. I have good antivirus software (Panda) and I'm clean as far as I know for a virus. Plus I use Adaware and scan for spyware often. What would cause this and how do I fix it?
Thanks,
BGThis might sound simple if you are a more advanced computer user, however, its a COMMON problem:

If this is a laptop, are you accidentally TOUCHING your TOUCHPAD causing you to "click" on the desktop, minimizing everything?

A lot of users, especially those not used to a laptop, will do that on accident.

If you use an external mouse on your laptop, you can disable your touchpad, just remember to bring the mouse with you where-ever you go. I agree with Zylstra....  I sometimes, on my laptop, minimize things when I open it.  Make sure ur not touchin the way bottom or the right side of the touchpad when you open a file or when its open in general....I once had this problem (a long time ago) and it was the cause of a virus.

It seems like there are many possibilities here.

What evidence do you have that your Windows XP Professional is not a valid installation?

Have the "Software POLICE" come a'knocking at your door?  Men in Black been sighted in the neighborhood?  Neighbors suddenly stop talking to you?  Lightning strikes getting closer and closer?

Microsoft refuses to provide updates?  See Genuine Microsoft Software

It's possible the previous owner loaded legitimate instance of a "better" operating system.  Was the operating system (license) part of the purchase agreement?  If so, seller should have provided you with installation media (CD) and Certificate of Authenticity (COA).

All of that aside, most people would assume they're good to go until Microsoft tells them otherwise.

If laptop came preinstalled with operating system, its license is PROBABLY bound to that machine.  As previously noted, look for a recovery partition on the hard drive and/or contact manufacturer for cost of Recovery/Restore CDs (if available).

HI dahlarbear

To answer your question while trying to do something with microsoft an update maybe? That is when I learned that the software was not  genuine. The "software police"  or men in black probally would be more fun though, and the neighbors allready don't talk to me.

Hi Patio,

Acer has responded and here is the information:

Thank you for contacting Acer America. I apologize for the inconvenience that you have experienced. If you need to restore your system back to factory settings, note that your computer has the capability to reinstall the original factory software without needing to use CD's, as long as the hidden PQSERVICE partition still exists, and the Master Boot Record has not been DAMAGED.

*Please note, this will erase all data on your hard drive. Back up all important information prior to following these steps.*

There are 2 ways to access the eRecovery feature:

1. If Windows Will Start

At the windows desktop, close all open programs and windows. Press ALT (located to the left of the space bar) and F10 at the same time, then release. A program should start up called Acer eRecovery. Follow the onscreen instructions. You want to choose Recovery Actions, then Install the factory default system.

Should I follow this or did you have something else in Mind?

Thanks
While I'm not sure what you asked Acer, I'm disappointed by their response.  It does not address whether they provide Recovery/Restore CDs.What is the question i should ask Acer? While the instructions Acer has given you should restore your laptop to its original specs as it shipped from the factory...there is no guarantee this recovery partition is/isn't corrupt.

You can try their procedure, but before you do...make sure they can/will provide recovery CDs.  This may be at a reasonable cost to you, though.

Solve : System won't load data cd/dvd's?

Answer»

I have an ACER Aspire 1640z running XP Media Center Edition version 2002 Service Pack 2.
The drive is Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-850S.

I have had this problem ever since I've had the computer, but I would really like to fix it if possible.

The problem is only with data cd/dvd's. Sometimes when I put one in, the computer will insist it is empty. My usual work-around has been to put the disk in an old computer, copy it to a new disk, which the Acer would then happily read. This time it is a dvd-rom and I don't have any blank dvd disks.

The first time I put the disk in, the machine read it with no problem, so I thought I was home free, so I didn't immediately copy it to the hd. But now it says there's nothing on it. I have NTI CD & DVD-Maker on the machine and it can read the disk, but it won't copy it to the hd; I finally had to use IsoBuster to transfer the data to the hd.

Any ideas would be appreciated. If you need more info, will SUPPLY. So Windows couldn't read it through My Computer but ISO Buster could?

My first suggestion would be to reinstall the CD/DVD Drive's Drivers.
You can do this by going to the manufacturers website, looking for the right hardware, and downloading the driver.I have been told it uses generic Windows drivers. Going to Device Manager and doing update drivers, it says it can't find a better match than what is already installed. I went to DriverGuide and downloaded SOMETHING for 'Matshita anyDVDRAM' and the readme and manual were in Japanese. If you find the model of the Disc Drive, go to google and search for:
Download DRIVE Drivers.

Or go to your Computer Manufacturers website, look for the Computer Model, and look at the Driver Section.I found this on another fourm. You can try it but at your own risk. Make sure to back up your registry just in case....

The solution i am posting works perfectly for Acer laptops wiht Matshita UJ-850s. I have not tested it on Toshiba yet.

Method 1: Remove the registry entry

WARNING: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method.

These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk. Note If you had installed multiple CD-writing software products on your computer, you need to uninstall the software products before you remove the registry keys.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
4. On the File menu, click Export.
5. In the File name box, type savedkey, and then click Save.
6. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters, and then click Delete on
the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.

Note If this data type is missing, go to Method 2.
7. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters, and then click Delete on
the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
8. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Spoiler: Tried that, didn't work.

The Acer Driver Download button results in 'Page can't be found...' Apparently the drive is manufactured by Panasonic, their site lists several UJ xxx drives, but not UJ 850S. Sigh.

Is there a way to force a reinstall of the driver that's on the machine? You can go to the device manager and delete it...than reboot

That should reload the same drivers you have now.

By the way, you did delete both the upper and lower filers in the regisrty?

Well, that didn't work.

Yes, both upper and lower. I ran across that yesterday and tried it, with much trepidation. It had no effect on my problem, but something else complained, I forget what, and I had to restore it.Can you check this on your machine and let me know if you are set to PIO or DMA ...

For Windows XP

Go into your Control Panel by first clicking on the Start Button.

Then click on the Control Panel icon located in the right column of the Start Menu.

If your Start Menu is set to the Classic View, then begin by clicking on the Start Button.

Then click on Settings, then click on the Control Panel icon to open up the Control Panel.

Now, Double click on the System icon to open up the System Properties window.

Now click on the Hardware tab located at the top of the screen.

Then click on the Device Manager button in the center area of the screen.

Now click on the plus sign

  • next to the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers to expand that section.

Then double click on the Primary IDE Channel to display the Primary IDE Properties window.

Then click on the ADVANCED Settings Tab at the top of the screen.

Now for Device 0, ensure that the Transfer Mode: selection is set to DMA if available.

Then for Device 1, ensure that the Transfer Mode: selection is also set to DMA if available.

Then click on the OK button at the bottom of the screen to save your settings.

Then double click on the Secondary IDE Channel to display the Secondary IDE Properties window.

Then close Device Manager and the Control Panel to return back to your Windows session.

On Primary, both were set to DMA if available.

There is no Secondary IDE channel.Plus, I've screwed something up, because now IsoBuster says the disk is blank.

Solve : How to PROHIBIT WAKE-UP and/or ensure a complete hardware shutdown.?

Answer»

I am using XP Home with SP3 on Acer Laptop Travelmate 244LM

For 5 years my P.C. always started the day with 98+% full charge after a night powered down.

Two weeks ago it started the day at 0% and gradually built up 1% point at a time for a couple of hours.

Every night I instruct a normal SHUTDOWN, and after everything has completed, and the LED's go out and the fan stops and the display blanks out, then I shut off the mains power to the battery charger.

I suspect as possible culprits :-
1.  Something woke up the computer and it stayed awake until it exhausted the battery, or
2.  The shutdown software correctly turned off MOST of the hardware, but perhaps the USB ports kept alive external peripherals etc.

I find that XP Home has stupidly configured the LAN ETHERNET interface so my computer belongs to the WORLD, i.e. Realtek LAN has enabled :-
Wake-On-LAN after Shutdown, and
WakeUp on ARP/PING

I am happy to disable these two options just in CASE.
Please advise me, are there any other places in the operating system and or BIOS that also merit adjustment ?

If it is a KNOWN issue for the Acer to leave some equipment alive and discharging the battery I guess the only cure is to update the BIOS, but that cure is likely to be worse than the disease - ACER SUPPORT is useless.
Their main U.S. branch refuse to help because they cannot validate my U.K. serial number.
My local (U.K.) branch go no further than allocating a case reference number.

Regards
Alan
Since you mention a battery I'm assuming this is a laptop.

Why not just disconnect the ethernet cord?I was horrified to discover that Microsoft had applied this default,
but I am happy that I can disable the Wake-Up-on-LAN options,
or, as you suggest, disconnect the LAN cable.

My present concerns are that :-
1.
There may be non-LAN Wake-Up options that I should disable,
and I would like guidance on where to find them.
e.g.  could the scheduler cause wake-up from a shutdown ?
2.
Could the SHUTDOWN have failed, and left the BITS of hardware using up the battery, or only achieved SLEEP or HIBERNATION.

Alan

Solve : Reinstalled Windows XP Pro on C: Drive Now Cannot See Data on D: Drive?

Answer»

Hello.  I have two SATA INTERNAL Disk Drives in my Dell Optixplex GX280 computer.  The C: Drive (40GB) contained my OS and programs; the D: Drive (500GB) contained data only.

Tonight, I reinstalled Windows XP on my C: Drive.  I booted from the CD and verified that I formatted ONLY the C: Drive then reinstalled Windows XP.

When I attempted to drill down on my D: Drive after bringing the computer up for the first time since the re-install, it told me I had to format the D: Drive (which I didn't do).  I thought that this may be due to Windows XP not being able to recognize large disk sizes so I installed SP2 and the same thing is occurring--it sees the drive, but each time I attempt to open it, it tells me that I have to format the drive.

This drive contains all of my data.  I haven't formatted it.  What do I NEED to do to get Windows to recognize this as a valid disk with data on it?

Thanks for your assistance.

Is there any way you could take out the hard drive and try it in ANOTHER computer? This will help us figure out if it is the hard drive or your PC.You need to MAKE sure it is jumpered as a Slave drive when doing this.
The diagram for this should be on the top of the HDD.

Solve : HELP! can't copy paste, can't search etc. etc.?

Answer»

So like a week ago, i did this registry scan and i can't exactly remember what happened but i think i might deleted a .dll file that i shouldn't have deleted.

anyways, after i restarted my computer i got the old 98 look instead of the windows XP, i cannot copy or paste or drag anything. i wont see the start line... My entire computer is just really messed up.. if i try to open Internet EXPLORER it get's an error saying 'cant open page'. if i try to open certain programs like AIM or FF it gives an error with 'can't find 'null'.

I tried to undo all the registry scans, i tried to start up in safe mode but the only thing i get is a black screen then.. also when i open windows task manager and look at my processes it looks like there are way less running than before..

PLEASE HELP!Try Chkdsk, and if you have your Windows XP Installation CD, try to boot from CD and SELECT install the OS. Next, the installer will tell you that exist a Windows XP OS installed on your Hard DRIVE, select the repair option, and you'll see that the OS installation starts, but don't worry, it will just restore all the OS Kernel, it will not delete the installed programs or your files.

alrite, im gonna try that!
thank you and ill let you know!Windows XP repair manual: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Solve : When Printing Program Locks up?

Answer»
 Hi All,
I hope somebody out there can Help me.

Just the Last few Days, No matter what Program I Print from , the program locks up and a White Space the size of the Print Preview that was just there remains, Sometimes bigger with just the Program Header remaining normal .

If I print a Page from Paint Shop Pro with just a Full Stop (a Dot) on it no problems,....but anything Larger or to Print a Full Page then the Full GUI is white with just the Program Header Visible and accessible, with the Mouse Pointer.....

For the Rest of the Screen (white space) the Hour Glass is there waiting for the Printing to finish. ,
I can go and open up another Program and do some other work , but if go back to the Program I'm printing from , it's still LOCKED with the White Space still there.

As soon as the Printing is finished everything GOES back to normal

I have run a Virus Scan and have found nothing.

I have a Free Ram indicator, in the Tray on the bottom of the Screen, that tells me I have 1450 mbs   free. out of 2GB .

If I Close the Program I am printing from , sometimes it stops printing immediately.
which could be ½ way through a Printing of Page.

Ron,

I am using :

Windows Pro SP3
Dual Core 2 E4500 CPU
2 GB Ram.

There is a guy called McLovin on that forum........That's the name of someone at the camp I went to last month....

Hi McLovin,

Thank you very much for that, it fixed it .

What I would like to know is ...

I have not DONE any changes in the recent Past to that at all. , but if it has fixed it, "who cares" ??

Another thing you may have a suggestion for is :

I have been using Generic Printer Cartridges for years now....and I have only ever had the Warning.... "Do you really want to use these Cartridges" etc

when I initially put a new cartridge in.....

See My Post = http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1028584

As you can see , I thought I had it fixed. Well , I went back and turned a couple of the Error warnings back on. and still did not get "Warning " again.

Now that I have done your adjustments and resolved the "Locking" problem
I now have the Warning.... "Do you really want to use these Cartridges" etc
again every time I print something.

I have gone back and turned off the 4 Error warning options.
But it still pops up every time, ..... and a funny thing is , even if I say"No,.. I don't want to use the wrong cartridges" ...... it still prints anyway.

I look forward to any suggestions you may have ....or anyone else.

Thanks again McLovin

Cheers Ron.  "

Solve : DELL DIMENSION 5000 PROBLEM?

Answer»

Hi,

I recently looked at my friends Dell Dimension 5000 Desktop computer as he was having a problem using all his USB ports. He only had 2 ports working which allowed his Keyboard and Mouse to working as these are both USB and not PS2 connections.

I tried the normal things like to run a FULL AVG virus SCAN, a AD-Aware scan and i also ran smartfruadfix which didn't pick up any viruses. I also looked in device manager and there were no yellow exclamation marks and everything seemed to look ok.

As a quick solution i installed a new USB 2.0 internal PCI card and run the driver/software CD which installed ok but it didn't recognise any of the USB devices that i plugged in.

I then went on a help forum and it said to go to USB in device manager and uninstall all of the USB devices until the moue and keyboard stopped working and then restart the MACHINE and Windows XP should detect new hardware. I did this and it does detect new deevices but i cannot use the mouse and keyboard. NOW IM STUCK!

I then took the computer apart and took out the hard disk drive with the intention of setting it as a slave and backing up on another computer. My problem now is that the hard drive is a SATA and I dont have a SATA drive in my computer so NOW IM STUCK!

Any help would majorly be of help.

The only thing i can THINK of is to use a portable version of XP to backup his STUFF etc etc...

PLEASE HELP smile.gif

Solve : Using Pendrive as a RAM on XP?

Answer»

I have a P4 COMPUTER but its RAM is just 256 MB. If ANYONE knows any method to use a pendrive as a RAM, please tell it to me. Thanks in advance. This is not recommended, not practical, and I don't think it's possible.

USB Storage Devices store memory as Flash memory, which is different than the type of memory used in your RAM. They are accessed differently and have different characteristics.
The main difference is that the Flash Drive retains its memory when the power is turned off, whereas the RAM is completely erased when you turn off the power.

Also, if you manage to get the USB Drive working as RAM, it would be like driving a car without circular wheels. It is just too slow to be used as RAM.

Can you not purchase any more RAM? It doesn't come too expensive.Google turned up some interesting results.
http://www.google.com.hk/search?complete=1&hl=en&q=flash+drive+as+ram&btnG=Search&meta=&aq=-1&oq=flash+drive+as+raWindows Vista can use a flash drive as RAM.  This FEATURE was introduced with Vista; it's called ReadyBoost.  I've tried it with my notebook PC, using a 2GB PNY Optima Attache flash drive, but can't say that I've noticed any difference in peformance when using it.

Also, if the notebook PC goes into Sleep mode, Vista fails to renew or reinitiate ReadyBoost upon AWAKENING.  I read an article mentioning this problem and it said the SP1 RESOLVED that.  But, I have SP1 installed and the problem persists.  So, at least for now, I've stopped using the flash drive for this purpose.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReadyBoost for more on ReadyBoost.
