Solve : I don't see the security tab right-clicking the windows explorer?

Answer»

Hi there:

What do I have to do to have the properties dialog showing the security tab. The properties dialog that I'm talking about can be shown by right-clicking a folder in the windows explorer.

Attached you'll see a screen shot of the referred dialog I see on my computer (XP).

Thanks in advance...

Solve : Self starting XP??

Answer»

Is there a setting in XP where you can set an "on" time where the PC restarts itself from hibernate?

Is it possible to start XP remotely via a command from another computer on a workstation network?

If the answer is "yes" to either or both scenario's or another one that I didn't mention, please TELL me how i can change the settings.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them?

Does anyone know what to do? where to look for an instruction to do this?

If there is a way to send the computer and instruction to awake from hibernation with a remote command i'd like to set it up myself.

Perhaps someone can explain "hibernation" and why some computers do not offer this option.

Thanks

I'm not sure about XP, but in Vista there is a thing called "Remote Desktop Connection". Does XP have it? Quote from: kpac on August 13, 2008, 05:08:43 AM

I'm not sure about XP, but in Vista there is a thing called "Remote Desktop Connection". Does XP have it?
Yep, but I don't see how you can remotely start a computer.

I am aware of ways you can set your BIOS or something to turn on your computer, but I'm not sure.

http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/401271:
Hibernate means that the computer will save your session, so when you turn it back on, everything will be the same as you left it.

To answer your question 'why don't some computers have it', it is either it has been disabled or it is an older VERSION of Windows.

I know that Hibernation has a low success rate with Windows XP Users, not sure about Vista though.
Personally, I would use Stand By. (In fact I use this at school but I turn the computer off at night)

Sleep keeps your session in memory and puts the computer in a low power state so you can easily resume what you were doing. Thanks for the feedback.

Decided to do a Google search and found a few interesting answers although i still have not nailed the answer for this used computer that i picked up that started on it's own the only time i used Hibernate and had it connected to a LIVE modem at the same time.

i suppose i can try leaving it in Hibernate and not having it connected to the computer to see if it still turns itself on.

The woman that i got it from had it set up for a business network that she accessed from home. That is why i wondered if it could be pinged or sent a signal from her companies computer automatically. The option allow OTHERS to access the computer was enabled. i disconnected that feature. Ask her

Read up on the Wake on LAN feature in the BIOS...it should be in the Owner's MANUAL.

Solve : LAN Settings?

Answer»

I added a wireless card to a WIN2K machine with IE6.0. EVERY time I boot up I have to go to \Internet Properties\Connections\LAN Settings\ and click off the Proxy Server for it to work. I can also REGEDIT in \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ and set the ProxyEnable to 0. Unfortunately when I reboot, it defaults back. Any permanent fix without having to reinstall the OS?Is your computer on network, or it's just one machine?
Laptop, desktop? It's a standalone desktop that I added to my wireless network.
Like I said it works; I'm just trying not to have to change the setting each time!
Perhaps when I loaded the OS (about a year and a half ago), I didn't select the network option.
The WinXP machine does not have this problem.

Solve : Attempting to connect VCR to PC?

Answer»

I have Windows XP Home on an eMachine T1120. I recently added AVerMedia DVD EZMaker PCI card, and connected my Hitachi VCR according to instructions. However, neither EZMaker or Windows Movie Maker can find the VCR. I've tried to add it in Device Manager, but Hitachi is not among any of the listed companies for imaging devices. I'm not a technical person, which makes it all the more frustrating. Any help on getting this recognized so I can use it would be *greatly* appreciated.I know nothing about that PCI card but - what connections are you using?  If you go RCA from VCR then you need to plugging in to not only audio input but a suitable video input for 1V Vid signal - or even an ''S'' video option.

I'd expect you to need either - a video card with options for a video input or - a ''grabber'' to use in a USB port to achieve same result.

So for now - expand on what you have re hardware and - how you connect your video cable to computer etc.The new PCI card had slots for both RCA and S-Video - I'm using the RCA composite video and have the audio plugged into the "line in" SLOT (also RCA). The PCI card is supposed to be a capture card.

Hardware - 1.2 GHz Celeron processor, 512 mb SDram, 3D AGP Graphics Intel Direct AGP, 40 GB harddrive. I've also updated XP automatically, so that should be current.

I hope that answers your QUESTIONS - I'm sorry I'm not sure what information you'd need. As I say, I'm not a technical person (this was supposed to be easy to do  )Ah OK - this was main thing I was wondering - whether the card was indeed a capture card.

Hmmm - I guess next QUESTION might be - was the card installation trouble-free, with Win seeing it and accepting it with no glitches?  I assume that was the case.

So - leaving aside VCR as the input device ..... this means by sound of things that the card is not showing up as a capture device.  Doubt if it'd make any difference at all but - can you try and feed output to this from a DVD PLAYER?  Probably get same result I suspect - a vid signal is a vid signal.

I would expect that you shoul see the card as an option in Movie Maker - where it should show as itself rather than the VCR or any other input source.

It should have installed to show in Device manager - so am wondering whether you could try again - remove card and try another install - long shot here but - try another PCI slot.  I only mention that because i had prob's adding an OLD SCSI card to my newer machine and it failed - removed card and tried another slot - that one worked....  otherwise so far - sorry no easy fix comes to mind.I was afraid you would say that    I was thinking that I should be able to see the card itself *somewhere* in the system, but thought maybe it was just because I didn't know where to look. Will try another slot and keep my fingers crossed (at least *that* part is easy  ).

Thanks so much for suggestions - and patience

I have a user that while WORKING in windows xp 61 calculators will open by themselves.  I have SCANNED the pc with cc cleaner and norton, norton found no viruses, and ccleaner clean out lots of junk, and none of the junk looked to be virus related..  The user is on an 8710w laptop from hp.

Since I have run ccleaner he has had no futher issue as of yet, but the user is unable to tell me how much TIME passes between occurances.  However it does not sound like the problem occurs more than 3 or 4 times a day..

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for the help.Possibly a worm. I READ about a PC that opened 200. Needs moving to malware section?

Or, just a thought... is there a special key that starts calc? Could be a faulty keyboard. maybe disabling any custom keyboard features would isolate the problem?

This problem can happen to PCs connected to Virtual Server...

Solve : Re: DNSAPI.DLL file is missing?

Answer»

I am starting my own topic.......again...sorry
I have been trying to help my sister with her messed up computer. She is running XP.  On START up, the screen goes to the windows logo, acts like it is trying to boot up but eventually comes up a BLANK screen with the error message that the DNSAPI.DLL file is missing. This error message is contained in a dialogue box titled lSASS.EXE. I have tried holding the F1, the F8 and the F12 KEYS to get to a safe mode option or boot to disk but these keys are not recognized. It ends up on a blank black screen. Is there anything I can do?lSASS.EXE - is the first letter capital "i", or capital "l""?
LSASS.EXE is a legit file, but ISASS.EXE is a malware.I believe that it is a lower case L. This is my sister's computer I was trying to fix and I am home now so I can't check. When I wrote it down I wrote it as a lower case L.  She said that she was trying to install an update that she had been prompted to download. She is even less computer literate than I am so she's not very helpful. In the middle of the download she turned off her computer.IF it's lower case "L", then...

To access Safe Mode, you have to keep TAPPING F8 key, as soon, as computer starts.
If you can get into Safe Mode, try System Restore.
If you can get into Safe Mode, and System Restore doesn't work, go Start>Run, and type:
sfc /scannow
Click OK.
Have Windows XP handy.

Solve : cant change color or pixels?

I would appreciate any help. My computer is stuck on 640*480 16color. I try to open a document and it tells me that I need at least 256 COLORS and to change. When I try to change in the display settings, it wont let me. I slide it to the right and when I push apply it goes to tell you to restart, but you can see that it slid back to the left as I pushed apply. If I restart it stays at 640*480 16color. It always worked before and I havent installed anything! I turned my computer on and it looked like this. It looks like its in SAFE mode, but its not. I have window meWow - that sucks!  Hard to tell right off what is happening but - I think some more info here might help.

What machine and OS - what GRAPHICS card (on board or seperate) ..... any recent changes/additions prior to this happening.?

If the slider is trying to return to that basic vga setting - then something has to be amiss with graphics driver perhaps ... look up in hardware manager and see what it says re display.  What is the top res option on the slider bar?  Useful to know that too.

You should also be able to opt for a review of a res' change without reboot ...... which saves some time.  It should ''try'' a different setting for several seconds (normally) and ask if that is OK or not.

OK - just seen - Win ME - but what other info can you give us. Quote from: ChrisXPPro on August 12, 2008, 11:14:49 AM

windows ME Intell celeron processer 127 omb ram
Top res 1024 *768 High color{16bit}.
All I did was copy a colored document, closed down works, then turned off computer. I turned the computer on and the graphics were messed up and stuck! Thanks.Hmmm - well - can't see that copying operation as being a problem normally .... so won't blame that.

What I am thinking tho is you might have a problem with your graphics card/controller - because everything is defaulting to this ever so basic VGA ...... and even tho ''settings'' shows 1024 x 768 as being ''AVAILABLE'' - the graphics is not delivering.

Your RAM is pretty modest but that should suffice for ME - but wonder if the graphics makes use of RAM to help it along and therefore if the RAM is at all compromized.

Not much help so far - but hang on and let's see if other folks have any ideas.  My vote is still for breakdown of graphics hardware.

Oh and - just check in ''Device Manager" to see if device is reported as OK and functioning - under display adaptors.Could it be a virus messing with your display settings?
Are you sure you haven't downloaded or installed anything lately?

I'd do a virus/spyware scan before continuing, just to make sure. Can you change your resolution under Display Settings, or the slider doesn't move? Quote from: Broni on August 12, 2008, 07:28:50 PM

Solve : I have a problem with trying to play games...?

Answer»

Now me, I own a DECENT PC running MICROSOFT Windows XP. My computer's a few years old and it can play games like L4D2 on some fairly decent settings. The problem is that whenever I try to play a game like L4D2 or any other games that go along the lines of fairly recent or when it comes to MODs like Goldeneye: Source, my computer unexpectedly shuts down after five minutes of play time. The only games where this doesn't happen are any games that don't seem to take a lot of processing power (or so it seems). I can play the original Serious Sam's with ease; I have no problems trying to play Total Annihilation, Point-and-click adventure games such as the new Sam & Max's play just fine. Though, when I sit down to play a session of Spore, it shuts down five-fifteen minutes after start. No, I don't mean the computer kicks me out of the game, I mean the ENTIRE COMPUTER SYSTEM shuts down all the way down to having to push the power button to turn it back on. I don't know what's wrong and it's starting to become WORRISOME because this has started to happen much more frequently. I've ran just about every single virus scan I have the patience to endure (you know, AVG free, Malwarebytes, Spybot- Search & Destroy, the typical STUFF) as well as used a fair amount of defragmentation software's such as MyDefrag, CrapCleaner, and Auslogics Free edition. I've been using CoreCenter to make sure that the CPU isn't overheating and it's not.

Finally, I've had a friend of mine who's very knowledgeable about COMPUTERS (he certainly knows enough to build one from scratch, given the necessary computer parts) and he tried shutting down one of the power supplies. This worked for some time but now the computer's shutting down whenever I try to play games like Half-Life 2 or Spore. It also seems to depend on the game. Half-Life 2 makes the computer shut down after about three hours of game time and Spore makes the computer shut down after about five minutes of play time. If anyone knows or can at least give a suggestion on what's wrong, please tell me because I'm starting to get my knickers in a twist over this whole thing. I'd be grateful if someone did help me and I just want to thank anyone who does help me.

P.S. Sorry for the wall of text

sorry i mentioned my computer specs after ur post so the article is for Using WinDriver with Windows 2000 Service Pack 3  ... Hi!

I have experienced a couple of 'Blue Screens'. Mostly its as a result of hardware. It will behave like this (bring the blue screen) when you connect any peripheral such as new Hard disk, CD/DVD Drive or RAM Chip after windows is already INSTALLED.

However, I have managed to stay away by making sure that I do not install new hardware after installation of windows. If I do, I reinstall the O.S (Operating System).

For your case, backup your machine, format the HDD and make a new installation of Windows. This should help.

thanks for replying .... well i am not planning to format my windows now but ILL do when my holidays start like in summer LOL ... but if its cuz of hardware then may be its cuz i installed a new printer ... but thats weird1.  Remove Printer.  Uninstall (and Remove) the printer from Device Manager, disconnect printer from computer, then reboot.  See if the problem goes away.  Also the little research I've done indicates "windrvr.sys" is NOT a windows system driver.  You might want to find out whether it is signed (verified), where it came from, and why it's on your system.

2.  BlueScreenView.  Download, unzip, and run Nirsoft's BlueScreenView.  This program will extract information from the minidumps on your system and display them in a format that makes it easier to look for a "pattern" (similarities or differences).  If you're getting different Stop Codes on your BSODs, it might prove useful.  If you're getting the same Stop Code, it will show that also. From MSDN:

Quote
0x00000050: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
Requested data was not in memory. An invalid system memory address was referenced. Defective memory (including main memory, L2 RAM cache, video RAM) or incompatible software (including remote control and antivirus software) might cause this Stop message, as may other hardware problems (e.g., incorrect SCSI termination or a flawed PCI card)

DLoad and run MemTest...follow the info on creating a bootable CD.
Let it run at least an hour...
Any errors at all means you have a bad stik of RAM.MemTest.  Download the "free" diagnostic software from either www.memtest.org or www.memtest86.com and create the desired bootable media.  Once you boot the program, it will run forever (or until you press key to exit).

Solve : flash drive resident antimalware app??

Answer»

A while back someone suggested having, as part of your antimalware arsenal, some app that could be installed on a flash drive which could supposedly detect any spyware / malware on whatever computer the flash drive was plugged into. (I think the app was DOS-based, and it could work even if the system was severely compromised, ALTHOUGH I'm not sure about those two points.) Could anybody tell me about this app? And would it detect a key logger?
Did you check Portable Aps web site?
http://portableapps.com/node/18140
That link is a year old and it seems they did not get a answer.Sorry, this should have been POSTED in the viruses & spyware forum.1.  Portable Apps.  Thank you for starting this thread.  I would ALSO like to see "informed" comments on this subject.  I'd like to see a list of quality "portable" antiMalware apps assembled...

I haven't yet found a portable program that specifically targets "keyloggers".

I have used the ClamWin AntiVirus off the "www.portableapps.com" website off and on for several years because its "free", "portable", and runs off my USB thumb drive.  It works, but I don't really know how "effective" it is.

I can't really comment one way or the other on the other links I provided.

You might take a look at the following "portable" software:
     o  http://www.superantispyware.com/portablescanner.html
     o  http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/clamwin_portable

Solve : junk mail in outlook?

I'm having a bit of an issue with JUNK email in outlook.  I've created a list of junk email senders and have been adding it to user's machines, but some of the users on the DOMAIN are still getting junk email from senders that are on the list.  any ideas?Hi,

Are you entering the full junk mail senders address or just the domain?

Cheers
TechbeardI've done both, there was a list of addreses I used and I also went through those and DELETED the MAILBOX names so just the domains were showing and i added those to the list as well.  The user CLAIMS that domains on the list are still sending her junk and they're not being filtered, I will have to go in her outlook to SEE if this is true.

Solve : Comp won't startup anymore?

Answer»

Today when I started up my computer, the power button lit up and all the fans came on but the computer would not boot up. The screen kept flashing no signal and the fans kept going at full speed. Normally on startup the fans com on high speed for only a moment then slow down to a whisper, then the COMP beeps as it starts booting up. This time there was no beep, and the fans were going nuts, I seriously thought the fans were going to burn themselves out. I have never had this happen before. Can anyone tell me what may be happening.

I took the side panel off and everything is dust free. The fans are not clogged and none on the heatsinks are clogged with dust. The connection of the dvi cable is secure and the video card is opperating because that fan is on too. I checked everything I could THINK of.

Please helpThe first thinh you could try is  to reseat your memory module/s by taking it/them out and placing it/them in another slot. Take off also your graphic card if you have any when removing the memory.

This is the first step in finding a solution to this difficult PROBLEM  I swapped the memory and EVEN put the oem vid card back in and it still won't work. I was wondering, considering the comp is 5 years old, do you think the clock battery may be dead and if so would that cause this to happen?5 years old, it is possible that the battery might have drained completely... and mess up your configuration.generally speaking this cell's lifetime is 2-3 years.. well you could change the older one with a new..its rather cheap..look for  a "CR2032" its the name of that button cell..well then you will have to adjust your time settings in the bios and other re-create your previous configuration that was stored in cmos.

Also the noise  your power supply is making..it is near to pass away..so better change this one too  look for one with the same wattage as yoursWell bad news. I replaced the battery and being an electrician, I tested the power supply and it was fine. The only thing that leaves is the motherboard. I took it to a friend of mine who is a comp tech and he told me the board is done. Bottom line it is cheaper and better for me to just buy a new comp. Hp sourced my motherboard for $300 and I just laughed at them and said no. Oh well. Now to decide what new comp I want. Everyone seems to be building their own machines because most prebult comps built by companies like Dell and HP are *censored*. And don't even get me started with APPLE and their overpriced comps.

Solve : Computer keeps shutting down...?

Answer»

Hi. I'll try to be as descriptive as possible. I have a custom built computer, some of which I have upgraded through time by myself...at least the simple parts. However, I have a problem as of late.

My computer will sometimes just shut down. Not turn off, but shut down in such a way that it is no longer processing I guess. The monitor turns off, even though the computer sounds to be running, it isn't. I know this because when i run a game on my two COMPUTERS, it shows that the character on the failing computer logs out.

At first I figured it to be a powersupply issue...and this is why. I was having a graphical error problem on my 9800 gx2 card that would cause the comp to hang. I sent it in and received a replacement. It had run hot for a long while, and only recently before its errors I heard of a program EVGA made to correct it allowing me to increase the fan speed of the card. Anyway, new card in hand, I had the same problem...and thats when I found that one of the 6prong rail on the powersupply was dead. It would just cause the computer to crash, staying powered on, but turning the monitor off. So, I replaced the powersupply with not only a new one, but upgraded from a 750 to an 850.

Anyway, even now it still continues to do so. So, the tests I have performed are the following:

1. Swapped another videocard in, still happens.
2. Ran Memtest86 a few times, no errors.
3. Watched temps inside the case, on the cpu, the gpu, all of which as in nice temps.
4. It happens whether in or out of gaming.

I really don't know much of what else to test so I would love a little help.

My system is:

3ghz core 2 duo E6850
4 gb Ram (4 modules) (yes i know xp uses only 3gb)
evga geforce GTX 285 video card (under load 49 to 52 C temps)
850 modulated powersupply
Windows XP sp3
500gb HARD drive
P6N SLI Platinum Motherboard

Do the caps key and mun lock still work?
If so, the thing is running.I'll check in the morning and see if it does. I'm assuming all you are interested is if the keyboard light changes from on/off on num lock and caps. Even if they do I'm not sure still why the monitor shuts down and the computer is unreaponsive. Sound shuts off if music was playing. I even have an app running in the background that let's me access the comp with my laptop and it also cannot connect when it happens so I've only assumed the comp has hanged. If the CPU is frozen in a loop, the CAPS and MUN don't work. It is thee CPU that responds to the toggle.
Most likely you have a problem with a screen saver.
Or the VGA is on the way out.
Next time it does that , bang on the windows LOGO key. That should bring up the START menu. Ok. It did it again and the caps key and the numberlock keys do not respond. So I'm guessing the CPU is freezing in a loop. Not sure what that means. I did want to state I don't use a screen saver because when I'm not using my computer, I turn it off. I have very few items running in my system tray as well. Usually just temperature monitoring software, speaker icons, and occassionally FRAPS. What are the Temps ? ? Quote from: takean on March 18, 2010, 11:01:32 PM
Ok. It did it again and the caps key and the numberlock keys do not respond.
That means the CPU is locked in a tight loop or has come to a stop.
That can be internal overhearing, defective memory, defective BIOS or failure of other motherboard components.

The only thing you can do is try to re seat the CPU and check to see if the thermal paste was placed correctly.

Would not recommend a FLASH of the BIOS. That has to be the last resort.

Wait, we have to make sure this is NOT a software problem. You need to boot the system with another OS, line a Live Linux and let it run for an hour..
Hmmmm. Never have tried doing a dual boot before. Any guides you might recommend for me on installing Linux on the same hard drive? Quote from: patio on March 19, 2010, 09:36:44 AM
What are the Temps ? ?
temps while running prime95 are around 50C. Mostly around 47 to 49c.No, do no install a dual boot.
Do you have anything there that boots directly off of a CD?.
You could let it run for an hour doing some ordinary thing and see if it fails. This would let us know if it really is a hardware problem or is something inside your present installation of Windows.

Temperatures are in Celsius. From  30 to 40 inside the case is withing reason. The CPU might work up to 90, but that is way beyond safe and sane PC use. Try to keep it way below 60 when doing hard work. You say it gets up to 50 on a prime number EXERCISE. That sounds good.

I am out of IDEAS.  At this point I would want to try Southern Fried Chicken. K. In the morning I'll try that. Thx for your help

ThanksSounds like your anti-virus files have not been updated for a while.  Try updating whichever anti-virus you are using.

If you need further assist please post details of your hardware and software in use.

I tried updating my anti virus but the message still appears. I am using AVG 9.0 paid edition not the free one.
I dont know what you mean by hardware

This is very frustrating. AVG error messages USUALLY include a code, is the error message you posted complete?

Hardware is the bits and pieces which are bolted together to make your pc.  We don't even know if you are using a laptop, desktop, notebook etc.  When did this error message begin to appear and what, if anything, was added/deleted to/from your pc just prior to its appearance?   Does your hardware meet the minimum REQUIREMENTS to run AVG 9 (at least 512 mb ram).

Yes, we get frustrated too, mainly due to lack of information in order to do a reasonable diagnosis of the problem.  Perhaps you'd like to read this..

Oh OK sorry i did not provide more info.

I have a Philips based laptop (iQon) it has 512MB Ram, Windows XP media CENTRE sp2

I did not install anything or remove anything.

The only extra software i have on the laptop is Microsoft Office 2007, AVG 9.0, other than that is is factory default.

I tried REINSTALLING the AVG and it did not get rid of the problem either.

All help is appreciated as i need the laptop for college studies. Quote from: Me

Solve : Uninstall Windows Messenger?

How do I get rid of WINDOWS Messenger?

FileHippo update manager recommended an update to Windows Messenger.  As I never use this I thought I might as well uninstall.  I cant find the program listed in "Add or REMOVE Programs" and the listing in "All Programs" gives no response at all when clicked.  I did open the program via Search, but it only showed a sign in window.

http://www.grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger.htm
File Hippo certainly wouldn't have an update for a Windows Service. This must be what is referred to:  http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/
I ran the standalone version and it comes up with Windows Live Messenger 2009.  I was able to uninstall the current version from Add/Remove Programs, Windows Components.I believe the OP is talking about MS Messenger. Either way, I'll wait to hear from him or her to be sure. There is a version included with XP. It's in Add/Remove Windows Components. Thanks for replies.

Allan - FileHippo lists the program as: Windows Live Messenger 2009 (14.0.8089).   As mentioned, I've never used it  (my version is 4.7, so must be pretty old and been dormant).  I FOLLOWED instructions given in your link to pchell, as far as I was able, but that seems only to have removed it from the startup program. The ICON that has been appearing in the Task Bar ("You are not signed in") has gone.

Computer_Commando - I've looked again and there is definitely nothing listed in Add/Remove Programs under Windows Messenger.

Just seen latest post - BC_Programmer - it is in Components (I didn't look there).  I have cleared the ticked box and I think that has done the trick.

It's not really that important, but it is irritating that I cant figure out how to do it.

Allan - One other point - why do not use update managers? Quote from: silkie on March 18, 2010, 06:24:52 PM

Allan - One other point - why do not use update managers?
You only want to update what you need to update. Just because there is a new release of something, that does not mean you want or need it (if it ain't broke....). Update managers are indiscriminate -- this particular situation is a perfect example. Many well written apps have an internal "check for updates" feature. You can look at what the new update addresses or adds and decide for yourself if you want it. It is not unusual for an update to do harm rather than good.OK.   Thanks again to all for info and advice.

With regard to the Add/Remove Programs listing - I didn't think to look in the Components window - something I've learned.  I'll know better in future.

Solve : Card reader not working?

Answer»

Hello all,

The card reader on my pc no longer works.  I am running Windows XP.  The card works in my digital camera as well as my printer.  Here  is my QUESTION.  I went into msconfig/services/smart card.  The box was checked but the service SHOWED as being stopped.  How do I get the service running again?

Thanks Hi,

The smart card service isn't used for card readers. Is the card internal to your computer or does it connect via USB?

Could you give the following a try to see if anything turns up.

1) Put you memory card in the reader

2) Right mouse click 'My Computer' and choose 'Manage'

3) Click on 'Disk Management' - This tell you all the drives connected to your computer.

4) If you see your memory card there, check what drive letter it has been assigned.  If it's been assigned the same drive letter as something that is already there, then you can change it by right mouse clicking on the memory card and selecting 'Change DRIVER Letter and Paths'.

If not it may be the case that your card reader is not connected properly to your computer or is faulty or MAYBE you may need to REINSTALL the drivers.  You can check to see if the card reader is being picked up properly in 'Device Manager', which you can access from the same place as 'Disk Management'.  Look for anything that as an ! or x against it.

Hope this helps.

here is a good one, should the process SERVICE host be using 156,000K ? and why is the service explorer.exe constantly use 40% of the CPU. Thanks for the help I am a wannabe IT geek and from this forum I have learned tons.Well you could try several things, I know how pain in the *censored* it can be when your CPU is trippin and you can do jack**** right,

So several options, go to start execute msconfig, go to startup stuff. There you'll see a list of applications that boot themselves at the startup of Windows Xp. If theyre in the unmark them and reboot the PC. Then go back and find out where the files are located. Then you can work from there.

Another option is to make a new user, its possible that those things are only active on one user profile. Boot the new user and see what happens. Then you should indeed install programs like:

Nortan Antivirus 2005
Sygate PERSONAL Firewall
Spybot
Adaware

... more isnt needed.

( Tip: Update your amount of RAM ) Quote

The problem is that you are short on RAM. I would put in at least another 256Mb of RAM. Try Crucial.

XP will take up to 4·0Gb of RAM or 4 x 1024Mb modules.

Machines made for the business user often have motherboards with four RAM slots, 0, 1, 2, 3, and come supplied with at least one 1024Mb module.

I often have 33 processes running and no problem and I could open more and run scanners as well.

Definitely check for Spyware/AdWare and if you are running on NTFS make sure that you have 4096 bytes per allocation unit and not 512 bytes, and also make sure that your MFT is defragmented regularly.

I currently use Raxco's Perfect Disk v6·0 which will defrag both online and offline.

How do you defragment your MFT and what is it?

How do you check if your NTFS has 4096 bytes per allocation unit and not 512 bytes? What is the difference?Would it matter if Windows is installed on a FAT partition but use the remaining (NTFS) partition space for storage? Quote

I GAVE the poster some credit for knowing these things already.

1. Use Raxco's PerfectDisk v6·0 or Diskeeper 8 Professional. MFT = Master File Table

2. Use chkdsk in a DOS window.

3. 3584 bytes ;-)

4. It may do. XP likes to run in a bigger partition on NTFS and a smaller partition with FAT32

See: www.ntfs.com

An 8·0Gb C: drive allows for both to have default 4096 byte clusters in either FAT32 or NTFS
I see.

Windows XP is installed on a 6GB FAT32 partition.

What does the MFT do?winxp should run on a 128mb ram stick? some motherboards can only go up to 256mb? so more cost involved...one trick is to dump some of the dead wood that you dont use..like windows messenger /outlook express/system restore etc...and use freeramxp or power toys or tweakui....to help you even more look for a startup manager and its strange that winxp users switch to the classic view to help speed up the start-up process...and the intel celeron is a slow cpu..the processes of winxp startup can be eight-nine...

Now I get frequent "Java Update Checker"  flashing up.

I had previously read that Java script should NOT be installed;  now I
am confused.   What does it do -  is it good or bad ?

Many thanks from a newbie.Welcome to CH.

The Microsoft Java Virtual Machine, or MS Java VM, should be removed due to it no longer being supported by Microsoft. It has become obsolete which leaves it open to EXPLOIT by MALWARE. Check for and remove the Microsoft VM

INSTALL the new Sun Java Runtime Environment

Be sure to close all browser windows before beginning the install.

Remove the old version(s)

  • Go to add/remove programs and uninstall all old versions.
  • Be sure not to remove the new version that was just installed.
  • Download JavaRa.zip and unzip the file to your Desktop.
  • Open JavaRA.exe and choose Remove Older Versions
  • Once complete exit JavaRA and delete the program.
Thank you.  Sounds like you know your stuff.  However---I don't know
mine.
Went into  add/remove in control panel -  found NOTHING that said:
Microsoft Virtual Machine or Ms Java VM.  Looked in Windows file also and
it wasn't  there.  Checked IE internet options and scrolled down to:

Microsoft VM - with subs there of 1. Jave console enabler  2. Java logging
enabler and 3.  Jit compiler for VM enabler.   The only thing checked was
#3 ----so will unchecking that  be the same thing as removing Microsoft VM ?Install the new version, run JavaRA then check check IE internet options again.

Solve : non-functional wireless?

Answer»

So I have an outdated Micron TransPort Trek 2. It's got a Pentium 2 300MHz and 256 Megs of Ram and it is, effectively even, running windows XP Pro SP2. I recently purchased a Belkin wireless G F5d7010 version 7.000 to attempt to connect to my existing Airnet AWR014G (What I get for using cheap/non-big name hardware I suppose, but you gotta do what you gotta do). As a standard, I'm using WPA-PSK, but I've tried disabling it also. I have managed to effectively use the card by turning off the built-in wireless in my wife's Toshiba Satellite A55-S1064 and putting the belkin in there. When it is in the Micron however, I can occasionally see the network, but any attempt at CONNECTION never passes "Waiting for the network". A friend of our has a similar card (It's also a belkin, but I'm unsure of the model/version, but it is still low end) and when she brings her laptop over she can connect. The wireless network setup wizard says that it is unable to create the connection, and I'm running out of ideas. I have even attempted both a netsh and manual reset of winsock to no avail.

I think I've covered pretty much everything, but it's possible I've forgotten something. In fact, I just remembered that I've also disabled window's permission to power manage the card, which did cause the network to appear more often, but still no connection.

Any help anyone can offer is much appreciated. I've concluded that it must be something within the micron, but even the most recent driver for the card haven't helped at all.

Thanks for whatever you can offer, even if it's only reading through, and sorry for the muddled disorganized mess above  Is this a USB adapter? How far from the router is the Micron? What software do you have managing the Belkin adapter - Belkin software or Windows? Is the network on "B" or "G?" Can you 'see' any other networks? Can you connect to them?

Your turn See, I knew I was forgetting things.

The adapter is an add-in card, not usb. Most testing has been DONE I'd estimate about 8 feet or so (the router is near the TV out of necessity, and I on the couch). I have tried both the windows zero config as well as the belkin software, similar results on both (windows seems to "see" the network more often). I have managed to "see" one other network once (haven't had the chance to take it anywhere else) but it was a neighbor's secured network, so no connection would have been attempted anyway.

Back to you.

Edit: almost forgot, the airnet router lists itself as g, if it has the capability of switching to b, the method of doing such is beyond my knowledge. When you click on the icon for your wireless in the notification area, what does it say about signal strength and signal quality?

You're AWFULLY close to the router to be having problems. I'm sure that having the router next to the TV is not an ideal location but it must be okay if the other computers can connect.

So, you have the card in a PCMCIA slot? Are you sure that slot works - have you had any other cards in there? Do you have another slot to try it in?So you see my frustration then?

The signal strength is excellent, full set of bars. Every now and then instead of the "Wireless network unavailable" balloon, I get the paragraph about how it wasn't able to connect this time and click here to repair, which in turn brings up a box about how it can't connect and offers a repair button. The repair option makes it to "connecting  wireless network" until it times out. (And I've got to tell you, seeing "contact the person who manages your network" can be really irritating when it's yourself).

The Micron has two slots, both offer the same results, but one is directly above the other. The card detects and installs just FINE when plugged in. I think I have a modem card SOMEWHERE which was given to me with the laptop, but even if I plugged it in I would have no way of testing it's functionality. If you right-click on the wireless adapter icon, can you 'view networks'? Is yours shown?

Two thoughts: a) is MAC address filtering on in the router, if so, turn it off? b) on the Micron, Start>Control Panel>Network Connections>Local Area Connection>General Tab>Properties>click TCP/IP>Properties>General Tab>be sure that Obtain IP Address Automatically is checked.

I would turn off all encryption on the router and card until you get this figured out. Yep, and it shows automatic when in appears in available wireless networks, but no automatic attempt is made.

I made it to Burger King with it. They've got no security set on it, and results were the same.

MAC filtering is off, and I am set to obtain an IP automatically, but even issuing a static offers no change in results, and seemingly it never makes it to a point where it cares about an IP address.I'm out of ideas - stick around and see if anyone else can help. Thanks for the attempt anyhow. Frustrating, no?

Solve : Internet Explorer 7 Does Not Run After Installed On XP Home?

Answer»

I recently reformatted my HD and reinstalled XP Home, which includes IE6, and my other programs.  I downloaded IE7 and went thru the VALIDATION and installation process, and rebooted.  EVERYTHING looked fine.  However, when I opened up IE, I still have IE6.  I repeated the installation procedure with the same results.  I checked My Computer\Local Disk\Program File\Internet Explorer, and sure enough, it SHOWES IE6.  BTW - the installation created an Internet Explorer Troubleshooting shortcut on my desktop.  When I click on it, it takes me to Page Cannot Be DISPLAYED.  I have reformatted in the past, installed the same programs, and never had a problem UPGRADING to IE7.  Can anyone offer a solution?Additional point on the above problem:  I installed XP Service Pak 3 prior to installing IE7, which is something I did not do in the past.  Could this be the problem?  Is so, what is the workaround?

Solve : protected form in word; when protected tabs object to object (instead of across)?

Answer»

I'm doing a Word (2003) template using form fields and tables in unprotected sections.

When the document is unprotected, tabbing works normally. When the document is protected, I can't tab CELL to cell in the table(s) the unprotected sections. INSTEAD, the tab TAKES you to the next unprotected object or field.

I have successfully navigated a SIMILAR template so it doesn't seem to be my computer settings.

Any advice???

Solve : msconfig diagnostic setting?

Answer»

Okay - Go to msconfig, General Tab, Selective Startup, make sure that the FOLLOWING boxes are CHECKED: Process System.ini, Process Win.ini, (and here is your problem, I think) Load System Services, Load Startup Items. If you have some startup items deselected on the Startup Tab, this will only show partially selected.

Let me know how you make out.No luck.    Just to go back to the onset of the problem - it happened when I went to msconfig to try Diagnostic setup, since the computer was slowing a bit.  Could not return to normal operation after that.

Thanks for your help.  It's appreciated. What happens when you select the Selective Startup option on the General Tab?When I go to msconfig,  Selective Start, regardless of whether I click the boxes below (which I've done in all combinations) or not, I still have the same results.  No improvement in the operation.

I get the same results whether I use Normal, Diagnostic, or Selective.

Sure hate to be taking up your time, but really appreciate your inputs.

Your symptoms all point to the fact that you have turned off necessary Windows services. When you select Selective Start and have the first 4 items checked, does it let you 'OK" and re-boot?I'm not sure my last reply to your question went through.  I can't find it in the listings. Anyway, trying again.  In answer to the question, yes - OK and reboot comes up after I click on Selective in msconfig, regardless of whether I have clicked on everything under Selective, or not.  I've tried it all ways.

I agree that something critical in Win services is missing.  Sure would like it back!Travel Here...

Thanks, Patio.

Exnavy, if I were you, I would print out Patio's link, pick your flavor of Windows, go to Start>Run>type services.msc and adjust all services to the status shown in the link.

For example, if you have XP Home SP2, right-click the Alerter service and select 'disabled'; right-click on the Application Layer Gateway Service, and select 'manual.' Go all the way down the list and set each service as specified. Further, I would make sure that my selection in msconfig was Selective Startup with the first 4 boxes checked.

Then re-boot, cross your fingers and let us know.!Great!  I'll be working on the setup later today, and will report results immediately.

Thanks again to you, Patio, and everyone else who has helped.Wahoo!  Changed 57 settings on services.msc to conform to list forwarded by you guys - rebooted - and on line!!

Only question still is why is the taskbar background WHITE, still?  That was one of my first indications of trouble - but I don't care as long as things worki.

Many, many thanks.  I did try to set msconfig to Selective with items below  activated, as directed, but it reverted to Normal when I rebooted  after clicking Selective.  I just went ahead to services.msc, anyway.

Where can I go to learn more about the individual  default settings?  Something sure changed everything initially,  but with your information, I'm back in business.  I just hope I don't throw it back into limbo again and would like to learn enough to keep that from happening..  Sure is a nice day - isn't it??  Thanks   Thanks   ThanksGreat job

Normal startup is FINE. Which individual default settings do you want to learn about? Try Google and you can ask questions here. Answers here will mean more (and you'll be better able to filter out the well-intentioned but wrong answers) if you Google first.

Now that you're a Services expert, go here: http://www.blackviper.com/. Lots of great stuff that ought to answer many questions that you may have. Click on your OS on the front page and you can adjust the Services that you so carefully just set, according to his "Safe" settings. While you're there, it would be a good idea to check your settings against the 'default' settings -black viper's content is newer than the list you used before.

Taskbar: Not sure why it's still white. Try: right-click on empty spot on desktop>Properties, select Appearance tab, make sure that color scheme is blue. You may need to re-boot.Now here's one thing that I still see as a problem:
System Restore had no restore points.

Could you right click "My Computer" and go to "Properties" and under "System Protection/System Restore" ensure that System Restore is enabled? And then click "Create a Restore Point" so it will be easier to correct this problem if it happens again in the future?

Also, check and make sure your virus protection is up to date, and then run a scan.

This is normal when the Windows services are disabled. That was one of the clues!

Solve : Floppy Drive Issues?

Answer»

Ok I have never even heard of anything like this before....

There is a computer here at work that is relatively new (about 3 months old) with Windows XP SP3 fully updated. I just put in a new floppy drive last friday. We don't usually put them in our boxes but our robotic welders get backed up to floppy so it is a necessary evil. Anyway... you put in a disk and it will read it and you can get to the files. You pull that disk out and put in a different disk. You open the A: drive and the files from the first floppy show up and you can open them. Also, you can pull the disk out so there is no disk in the floppy drive, and open the A:. Again you will see the files from the first disk AND you can open them.

I have no clue on this one!

The only thing I can think of is that an external usb floppy drive was hooked up and used but it is not plugged in when this happens.
Is offline files enabled to where it may be caching the DATA on your C: drive as A:?

Shut off offline files feature and check againTried it and it didn't work.  Any other thoughts?Select some other folder not connected to the floppy after installation of the new disk and then reselect the floppy again.

Another way is to click out of explorer after installation of the new disk, reselect explorer and  and reselect the floppy again. Try this procedure.
RussFrom within Explorer: View>RefeshYep - a refresh could help - I think F5 will work as well to do that.  Closing Explorer tho should certainly get rid of that - has to be caching tho.

I have had an oddity on occasions with my DVD rom - sometimes it will show twice and still at least show contents even after eject.  Doubt it'd let files out tho.

My solution for having a floppy drive (hardly used tho) is a DataStation USB deal which also has 4 card reading slots - now and again very useful. Quote from: guardian on July 23, 2008, 09:11:27 AM

Floppy drives are s-l-o-w. Therefore modern operating systems have a "floppy buffer cache", Windows is no exception, and this is emptied under certain circumstances e.g. when the disk is ejected. There is a special wire in the floppy cable that carries the disk change signal to the floppy controller hardware on the motherboard. PERHAPS the cable is old and/or damaged and/or not inserted properly at one or both ends?

Problems like this that come after a drive swap sure make me think ALONG those lines.

Then maybe I'd suspect the drive or motherboard. Both drive and computer should still be in WARRANTY. In view of that, why did you change the floppy drive? (Also, why did you need to?)

Now with growing techniques floppy disk and drives are out of trend its place is taken over by pen drives there are basically two things that are in favor of pen drives. First is Long life and the next one is its STORAGE capacity. I know it is a bit expensive but in comparison of its utility the cost is not much. so leave floppy and take pen drive i am sure it will be of immense help to all computer community

Solve : wiped drive now having problems?

Answer»

i used a utility to WIPE my hard drive prior to selling my old dell dimension pc. when i tried to reinstall windows xp (i have a boot cd), i keep getting the message that i need to hit any key to install, but the pc looks to the a drive for the boot disk. my limited dos memory is gone... what do i do to get the computer to look at the cd drive? When you power on, look for a quick message about boot order, press the indicated key and make the CD drive the 1st boot device.

If there is no boot order message, enter the BIOS and look for a boot order screen. Make the CD the 1st boot device, save and exit. Enter the BIOS by pressing the key indicated in the message that appears immediately after powering on or re-booting. Typically, it's F2 or DEL - just watch for the message. It may say "To enter setup," press XX.Thanks for the help, but...i got into bios and changed the setting FIRST to atapi cdrom and that did not fix the problem, so then i tried IDE hdd (but now i'm remembering that is the hard drive itself), but that did not work either... i will try again saving it with the cd rom as 1st default for boot, but if that does not work any other ideas?
i just reset the settings and no it is giving me the message "invalid boot diskette, insert boot diskette in a:" i don't even have the floppy as one of the boot options the way i saved it.
Sounds like the computer is set to boot from the floppy drive.

1) In the BIOS, set the boot order to: #1 Atapi CD-ROM, #2 IDE Hard Drive; sometimes these BIOS screens are not straightforward, make SURE that you have it right.

2) Save and exit the BIOS - QUITE often the F10 key, but, carefully make sure that you exit the BIOS "Saving" changes.

3) Make sure that the XP CD or recovery disk is in the CD drive when the computer re-boots; if the CD is not in the drive, the computer will try the CD first, not find bootable media, then try to boot from the hdd, which it won't be able to find! What utility did you use to wipe that drive ?
Is this a genuine Windows CD with shiny holograms that says Microsoft all over it ?

Solve : Microsoft Office Template and Media Control?

Hope I am in the right area.

151.00 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space. 1528 Megabytes Installed Memory

I use Microsoft Office 97. which works fine.  But in my downloaded programs file, I have Microsoft Office Template and Media Control.   When I try to remove it (as it shows it is damaged), I keep getting a Share Violation box that says: These program files are currently being used by one or more programs.   Please close some programs and try again.  You may need to restart Windows.    I have done a lot of searching for an answer but unable to find one as how to remove it.    Any ideas?   Thank you.
I suspect you have an ActiveX control that got installed when you downloaded that template and it's causing the behavior. For a solution, see How to Remove an ActiveX Control in WindowsThank you, Soybean.

.   I followed step 3  in the below as it was not in Add/Remove. Went to the Windows downloaded programs folder, and it was there.   Tried to remove it and got the very same Share Violation message.

Internet Explorer 4.x or Later (All Platforms)

Internet Explorer 4.x or later, include the Occache.dll file, which is used to enumerate, update, and safely uninstall ActiveX controls using a "shell folder." 1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control PANEL, double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click the Install/Uninstall tab.

2. If the ActiveX control you want to remove appears in the list of installed programs, click the ActiveX control, click Add/Remove, and then follow the INSTRUCTIONS on the screen. If the ActiveX control does not appear in the list of installed programs, continue with the next step.

3. In Windows Explorer or Windows NT Explorer, double-click the Windows\Downloaded Program Files folder or the Winnt\Downloaded Program Files folder, right-click the ActiveX control you want to remove, and then click Remove.

4. When you are prompted to remove the ActiveX control, click Yes.

Solve : Invalid Configuration Info. - Floppy Diskette Seek Failure?

Answer»

I have Windows XP SP2 and it is suddenly not booting up. I get a message that SAYS Invalid CONFIGURATION Information, Please Run Setup Program, Floppy Diskette Seek Failure, Performing IDE Configuration, Strike F1 to continue and F2 to run Setup Utility. When I press F1 to continue, Windows loads and all is fine. I have a Dell computer model E310, which doesn't have a floppy disk drive. The computer is two years old and did not come with an installation disk. How can I eliminate this message and get Windows to LOAD normally? It sounds like, in your BIOS configuration, the Floppy drive has been enabled, despite the fact that there is no floppy present.

This could be due to a USB floppy drive having been used (sometimes BIOS will allow boot by USB devices, including USB floppy drives).
Are you a USB floppy?

You can enter your BIOS, and check the Boot Order, and make sure that the Floppy Drive is either disabled, or the last thing on the list to boot. If there is an area in the BIOS to disable the floppy, I would recommend doing that as well.

In Windows XP, when you go to "My Computer", does the floppy drive appear there as well? A USB floppy drive has NEVER been used on my computer. Please tell me how to access the BIOS on my Dell computer E310 (Windows XP SP2)and how to check the boot order and disable the floppy drive permanently, step by step. I don't know anything about doing this. Thanks so much for your help. Unfortunately, I dont have the same kind of computer you have, and I dont understand how your BIOS work, but, it shouldent be too difficult.

Usually, with Dell, you want to press the F2 key when your computer starts up (right at the screen that displays the "DELL" logo/image)

From there, you will want to look for a boot order setup. The best option would be to move the Floppy drive to the very end if its there.

Once you have done that, go AHEAD and exit saving all changes. Does the error still occur?

Anyway, I have two sets of SPEAKERS and I would like to attach both to my COMPUTER without the use of a Y- splitter.

My desktop has two ports for the speakers. ONE behind and one at the front as well as internal in built speakers. Anyway, as most of you know, PLUGGING in headsets or speakers in the front automatically disables the speakers plugged in at the back.

Is there anyway to disable this and allow both sets of speakers to play at the same time?

Attached is a screenshot of some other attempts.

Thanks again, any other suggestions appreciated.

Edit: Touch.exe is not found in Command.com either.

[recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]This program cannot be run in Dos mode = Command Prompt doesn't recognize it = form Command Prompt point of view, file doesn't exist.Thank you Broni, that I could understand if Windows would recognise it.   Sounds like what you're saying is that Internal commands will not recognise the file but both Copy and Dir are Internals, why one and not the other?.  The message that the program cannot be run in Dos mode is not displayed on the screen but can be seen when the file is opened in a hex editor.

Doesn't recognise what?  I understood that Cmd would find any file in the MFT but would not necessarily execute it and that the error message would be displayed by the Exe when an attempt to execute was made.

See the attachment for the displayed error message when an attempt is make to open the file in Win.

My understanding differs from yours.  If no switch is entered then Touch is supposed to list the acceptable switches and syntaxes.  I agree that the actions of Touch are controlled by command line switches (parameters), so is Dir, but that does not explain why the file cannot be found.

However I have found other Exe's which are part of the Reskit and also cannot be found except by Internal commands, most peculiar.   Will have to do a bit more research on this problem.

Again, thank you for your interest.

I'm surprised that Word would open the .dat file. If correct, have one of them save it as a .doc and send it to you.

I can't recommend a program to open the file on your own, ->google. Perhaps others have a recommendation.

Good luck.Ask the sender what program it was created in...
Windows programs will not NORMALLY view MAC files and vicsa versa without a 3rd party program.I have seen this before. It has to do how the email security works. If you know the sender and trust the email save the file to your computer and change the .dat to .html. The email will open and look fine with IE.

Solve : uncooperative Microsoft Backup?

Answer»

Win98se, two drives, multiple partitions.
Partitions are backed-up individually with Microsoft Backup. Each backup execution produces a single archive file containing everything SELECTED for backup.  The restore program calls this file a "backup set".

A backup proceedes under one of two possibilities. (1) everything on the computer at one fell swoop (2) everything selected by the user. I always use (2). Each partition is done individually. Everything at once would take too long, would be too big for my backup storage, and would waste both time and space with a lot of data that changes very infrequently -- plus huge temporary project files.

This has always worked properly. Any part, or all, of a backup can be restored (to the same location or to a different location. I never had any REASON to try to restore the entire OS partition, but I had no problem getting individual files from the backups.

The disk containing the OS partition died. A new disk now has a new Win98se install from the Win98 installation CD. Because the backup "catalog" was on the OS drive, it no longer exist (except in the backup files themselves, I presume); the new catalog in the new install is empty. This requires a slightly different restore procedure:

(1) browse to find and select the backup file desired (the same as before)
(2) the program then SAYS "the catalog is empty for selected device" (because the original catalog no longer exists, the program does not know what is in the selected file). Originally the program went directly to (5).
(3) press the REFRESH button (not necessary when the catalog existed)
(4) program whirrs and hums for awhile while flashing a "creating temporary catalog" sign.
(5) after (3) and (4), everything is as normal. The backup set's contents are displayed in a browser window. One selects all, or any part(s), to write to where ever one wishes.

EXCEPT, if an OS partition backup is selected, after the whirring and humming, the program announces "The current media does not contain any backup sets" and quits. I have three backups of the OS partition. The program does the same thing with all, so I am as close to certain as possible that it is a built-in limitation, not corrupted data.

There are two possible reasons for the problem
(1) the program checks, finds Windows system files in the archive, and decides to quit. This does not happen when  the backup file is in the catalog, so maybe it is some kind of deliberate copy protection.
(2) I made the stupid mistake of checking the "backup system registry" option whenever I did a backup of the OS partition (but never when doing other partitions). This seemed potentially useful. It causes no problems under "normal" CIRCUMSTANCES (i.e. when the catalog exists), but maybe it is what triggers the restore program to quit.

The point of all this is that I need things from an OS partition backup, preferably the latest of the three I still have. Almost certainly the files are there, if only the archive could be opened and processed. Maybe someone know a way around the problem???

Solve : Compaq LTE Elite 4/75 CXL - Networking issues.?

Answer»

Hey, Thanks for taking the time to read/answer my POST.
I just registered here because I found this whole forum (
and site) useful and it TURNS out I have a quick question
myself.

I have an old Compaq LTE Elite 4/75 CXL for vintage/hobby
purposes.. I would like to move some old programs onto it's
hardrive (such as QBX and Gamemaker 1,2, etc). However,
the floppy drive is somewhat damaged. So using floppies is
off the list.

This old notebook has no ethernet port either, so I cannot
network it with my main PC (with Windows XP). Also I do not
own a Null Modem cable.. Nope.. not even a double sided LTP
err LPT cable.. (aka the printer cable).

The only possible way for it to even access the 'outside' world
is to use its PCMCIA Modem card.. Is there a way to network my
two computers between PHONELINES.. using two modems.. same
house.. etc? Don't worry, I've also googled it and tried to search
for it myself... No luck.. 0.0;

Thanks,
-Conner H.Hey "Conner H",

It is possible to setup two computer via modem and dial into one another......but the headache and work involved will over weight the solution I could suggest.

If it was me I would get a IDE 2.5" cable converter.....from this site:
http://sewelldirect.com/25to35ideconverter.asp

Then remove the hard drive from the laptop and connect it to your main PC (file transfer will be very quick in comparison to modem 33.6 connection.

Here is some help to take a laptop a part:
http://repair4laptop.org/disassembly_compaq.html

CheersThank you for your advice,
I appreciate it.

I have successfully taken apart the laptop/notebook
myself.. about twice. Mainly to try to see the floppy
drive's problem.. but the item you mentioned.. the
IDE converter doesn't look like it's the appropriate
'end' for the compaq hardrive.. no?

Unless I need to take it out of the caddy and
remove the hardrive.. (which I never have done).

Once again, thanks,
but if you do know how to transfer files
via modem and phone line.. it would be great
if you could post how/ or maybe a link to a site
that shows me how.

=)For about $20 you can set up a serial or LPT network. That laptop must have a serial and LPT parallel port, maybe tucked behind a flip door. You can then network it being Windows 3.1, Windows 95, or if you have enough Ram you could even squeeze Windows 98 SE onto the HD and then network that via LPT or serial null cable.

There are a number of programs out there to allow also for a simple file transfer between systens if you dont want a network between them, but just to send and receive files back and forth between systems. One is called Laplink, then other Filevan but they cost money.

If you had a 2.5" to 3.5" interface board which would cost you about $10 on ebay, you can plug the interface board into the hard drive on the 2.5" connection side, and plug a standard IDE cable into it on teh 3.5" side, then plug an extra P connector into the interface board to power the laptop hard drive.

Then you coudl access it as a slave drive as long as the drive itself does not have issues and your bios will see it.

*** I have an old 20MB Hard Drive from an 8088XT that I had over 20 years ago and although it is IDE and spins up, and the BIOS see's it for the correct specs, the data is garbled in the Windows XP Pro world. Yet you boot the SYSTEM off that drive and it will run DOS, and Cobol and GW-Basic etc.... You shouldnt hit this issue since you are not trying to access a file system that is very old like me in which I believe the OS on my 20MB HD is DOS 2.11Well, if I get one, (a LPT cable, printer cable, right?)
how would the computers act if I connected them and
ran "direct connection" on my Windows 95 PC and setup
the host through Windows XP.. Would I see my notebook's
hardrive in My Computer.. or just shared files.. err what?
Thanks.
Okay, I got a LPT cable.. and even googled
help on how to network with Direct Cable Connections..
Sadly It did not work.. I have tried XP as Host and Win95
as the guest.. (even v.versa) no luck!

If someone has suggestions.. please
feel free to respond. I would really like advice
at this point. =)Are both machines in the same workgroup ? ?Correct me If I am wrong,
but I don't belive that you'd
have to make sure they are
in the same workgroup. -.-;

I also have tried that.. no luck.
Even tried MS Virtual PC.. using
Windows 95 and same feature.

-.-;
However I have got the floppy
drive to work part of the time..
So I have been able to transfer
smaller programs..

Even QBX. =)
