Solve : MS updates, errors in logfile.?

Answer»

Win XP Pro Corporate Edition.

Attached is the logfile from a manual install of an update.  By manual install I mean that the update was downloaded to a hdd file then installed using the /Q and /Z switches.  The logfile from ANOTHER update installed using Automatic Updates lists SIMILAR errors.  Add/Remove Programs shows that the updates have been installed.

Should the listed errors be ignored?

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]No. Don't IGNORE it.
The KB977165 is a topic on the MS site and elsewhere.
For starters see:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977165
Or Google KB977165
Quote

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in the United States and Canada or by contacting your LOCAL Microsoft subsidiary.
Thank you Geek9.   It's not just KB977165, I've manually installed 73 updates after a squeaky-clean install of Win XP Pro SP.3 and some of the logfiles contain similar errors.  There is no infection, the pc was offline at all times and no other programs had been installed.

Logfiles of 4 out of 5 updates installed after enabling Automatic Updates also contain error notifications.

The Scan for Latest Updates on the MS Update site shows that all updates are installed.

Solve : cant get past login screen?

Answer»

Hi
Can anyone help- I cannot get past login page, had a problem so did a restore but on login screen when i enter PASSWORD it logs on, saves settings and logs off again, same problem in safe modeyou should not post questions in this group

Had a chance to read up on this issue and I suspect I know why this is happening, but fixing it is a bit of a problem because we need to know what the bad file it.

The most common cause of this right now, is running a malware detection progam that deletes a file, but the registry still POINTS at it. This, wsaupdater.exe, seems to be the most widely seen culprit, but it could potentially be other things, too.

Let's test it out.

Boot using your winxp cd.
Enter recovery console.
at the command PROMPT go to

C:/windows/system32

next type:
Dir *.exe

If you find, it, type

copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe

Exit and REBOOT normally. You should now be ABLE to logon.

Run regedit

Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\

In the right pane, you should see

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wsaupdater.exe,

Change it so that it reads:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\userinit.exe

That should solve the problem

Solve : Security log on this system is full?

Answer»

Started getting this message at logon.
Found Event Viewer for security log filled over the past 7 DAYS.
Shows Event ID 861 for Failure of mostly svchost.exe and sass.exe as "The Windows Firewall has DETECTED an application listening for incoming TRAFFIC."

I have no performance PROBLEMS and don't believe this is a security problem.

I've cleared the log and it is filling quickly.

Suggestions on fixing the high numbers of failure reports?

Solve : Copy Windows XP to RAM?

Answer»

Is there a way to have windows xp copy itself off the HARD drive and onto the ram when booting and then copy back from the ram to the hard drive on SHUTDOWN? I know something similar to this exists with Bart PE except it's a CD not a hard drive and it also doesn't copy back. Can anyone tell me if this is possible without writing my own driver? Why would you want to do that?I subscribe that the question doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. Windows, as well as most modern OS's, don't ever copy their entire operational base into RAM at any time- in fact the core architecture is designed to do the opposite, keeping only code that is run in RAM via the use of DLLs and so forth.

You COULD try to create a RAM drive, and extract a disk image to that RAM drive, but since booting to it would require rebooting and rebooting would destroy the contents of RAM as well as the RAM drive driver you'd need to find some other way of booting to it after creating the drive. Quote

Why would you want to do that?

This would probably have to be done with the boot loader. Am I correct? Quote from: Linux711 on May 08, 2010, 10:45:36 PM

That may be the case for most people, but my windows xp install is only 500MB and I have 4GB of ram. This is completely possible. Quote from: Linux711 on May 08, 2010, 10:56:10 PM

No. it isn't. you really don't understand the mechanics of the windows kernel if you think otherwise.

EDIT: what I MEAN is, you can use a ram-drive install of some sort, but you aren't going to be able to somehow create a "driver" that does this. Quote

Well, then how does Bart PE do it? Quote from: Linux711 on May 08, 2010, 11:01:49 PM
Well, then how does Bart PE do it?

It doesn't.  I always thought that Bart PE copied itself from CD to ram, but I guess I was wrong.

So do you think the increase in speed would make this worth figuring out?

EDIT: by this, I mean the ram drive install. You could use a solid state drive as your primary drive, but that seems like an expensive upgrade that wouldn't really accomplish all that much.

Even if your original question could be done it's got to increase your boot time.

If you bought a SSD you would probably notice more of an increase in other programs more than windows. Quote
You could use a solid state drive as your primary drive

Have one. It's small (only 64GB), but it's 220MB/s I think.

Quote
increase your boot time.

Right, but only by 2.3 seconds with the solid state drive. If you already have a SSD, why would you want to copy windows from your hard drive to RAM?  And not just put windows on the SSD?I already have windows on the SSD. When I say hard drive, I am referring to the SSD.

Why would I want to copy windows from the SSD to ram? Because ram is still much faster than a SSD.I thought there might have been some kind of communication issue there.  When most people use the term hard drive they USUALLY mean the old spinney platter type thingy.

Solve : Tower Beeps?

Answer»

Upon powering up the tower, it beeps and will not start.  Cannot be powered off using the button, only by disconnecting power.
Monitor is black, UNABLE to see any errors or messages.Ok, findout what the MOTHERBOARD make and model is, and then count the beeps, as in 4 long 2 short.

A quick google should return the motherboard MANUAL, and you should be able to FIND out what the problem is from there.Have you opened your computer's case recently? Have you moved your computer recently?

Solve : Windows fails to start up?

Answer»

Hello,
Not sure which forum would be the best but will start  here, smile... been trying to help a friend of mine who is having issues at the moment.. when she starts the computer, a DESKTOP with XP, she will get that "Windows has failed to start up"..and "there is no signal input".. she is currently living in the UK..she has tried USING START WINDOWS NORMALLY, Safe Mode (didn't try Safe Mode with Network) knows little about Command Prompt and had the option of LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION..has used the F2 and F11 keys but apparently with no results..
Would like you folk's input on this and PERHAPS have a suggestion..
Thank you,
Larry Woller

I should add that thinking it may be a hardware issue suggested to her to disconnect everything but the internet (she has the desktop connected to a wireless router as she has a laptop also) and then start the desktop to see if that made any difference and it did not so thinking it is not hardware (mouse, keyboard and printer)..
LarryTap the F8 key repeatedly as the computer is starting up. This will take you to the advanced start up options. Choose "Disable automatic restarts on system failure". This should generate a blue screen error message. Post the entire message here. Thank you for taking your time to ANSWER, appreciate it..... I will relay the information to her and see if she wishes to do that or perhaps have a technician look at her pc which is what she is debating on based on her knowledge of computers and she is in the UK and I am unable to see what is on the monitor.... will get back here after I contact her and see what she wishes to do..

Solve : Unable to open C: drive and review folders?

Solve : Backup not included?

Answer»

Quote

How to install the Backup utility from the CD-ROM in Windows XP Home Edition
The Backup utility is not included in the default installation of Windows XP Home Edition.
Manually install the Backup utility
To manually install Backup, follow these STEPS:
   1. Put the Windows XP Home Edition CD in the CD Drive.
   2. Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file in the following location to start a wizard that installs Backup:
      CD drive:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP
   3. When the installation wizard is finished, click Finish.
So why did they never fix this with Windows Update?
Or, did they and I missed it?
what would they fix? they made a conscious decision that BACKUPS where something done by "professionals".

Nobody said the logic was sound.

besides, the backup application included is pretty crappy. Personally, I prefer to copy my files as files, RATHER then have them copied in some undocumented catalog. Now using that lack of logic.
And given that you are a professional.
And you neither like it or need it.
Therefore it should have been...
Included int he Home Version...
And left out of the Professional version!
I found out the hard WAY how Windows built-in backup service works...

Nvuninst - X - This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

This error does not occur on Windows XP.

It is a Windows 9x error message.Try uninstalling/disable your previous Gforce video card(generic) drivers before downloading the NVidia driver. If unsuccessful, try an OLD video card that match your motherboard and install then uninstall and replace it again with your Gforce video card and make sure to install the correct drivers then. I'm biding for computers and there is a selection of white, black and grey STREAMLINE cases. What is a grey stream line case? Quote

What is a grey stream line case?

It's like a white or black streamline case, only it's grey.

Grey is a colour. ("Gray" is a "color" to AMERICANS.)

This is grey:

A "streamline" (or in better English, streamlined) case is one which has rounded corners, etc, to make it LOOK "cool".

Maybe Grey cases don't do very well.

hey, don't you know!? it's just like with vehicles- for fast cars you need good aerodynamics to decrease drag- same GOES for computers, apparently.

Even though as far as I know they remain perfectly stationary during operation.Actually, aerodynamics are very important when you get mad and throw them out the window or across the room. Quote from: rthompson80819 on May 10, 2010, 12:13:06 AM

Solve : Moving XP...?

Answer»

Hello,
Today I was asked to wipe a hard drive in SOMEONE's laptop for them. I obviously chose the option to format and reinstall windows (XP) with the DISC, the problem I faced was that their CD drive wouldn't read discs, so I put the hard drive into my PC and installed XP using my PC, then moved the hard drive back into the laptop.

Now, the XP installation works on my PC but when I load up the laptop it will freeze as just before the XP loading screen is about to come up.

Now I am stuck with a dead laptop and I need to get it fixed, else I will feel real bad

Thanks in advance. You cannot use a hd with an OS installed on one system on a different system. Put the drive back in your system and format the drive then put it back in the original laptop.

What do you mean the cd drive on the problem system won't read discs?
Well the CD spins, but the laser must be buggered as it's just not reading any disc. It's not the CD drive...it's a failed installation as Allan illustrated can't be done.

Replace the drive in the PC you are fixing and Clik Here...

I suggest reading it thru 1st and printing out a reference copy before starting...No it is the CD drive because it wasn't working before the HD was formatted, as I was trying to play a music CD

Is there absolutely no way of installing XP ELSEWHERE and putting it into the laptop? Reason being I don't think there's any point replacing the CD drive...

Also can you explain why it HAS to be done on the laptop only? You can try a usb cd drive, assuming the laptop can see the drive at boot (most modern systems can see usb devices at boot).

The reason you can't swap drives is that during installation XP makes note of all hardware and stores that info in a small database file (wpa.dbl). That file is accessed at boot and if the hardware detected at boot is significantly different from the hardware info stored in the wpa.dbl file, the boot will fail.Depending on the laptop you may be able to create an install USB stick such as those used with netbooks. - Google "Install Windows XP From USB stick"I give up...Well I found out a way of doing it

Quote

1) install the external hard drive as a slave in your working desktop system.

2) Format the drive. I just did a quick ntsf format, doesnt seem to matter.

3) insert your windows cd in the drive, and exit when it pops up asking what you want to do.

4) Go to "My Computer" and look at the drive letters of the CD-rom containing the XP disk, and also the drive letter of the hard drive you are installing to.

5) Assuming the hard drive is "D" and the XP cd is in "E:", go to the run command and type (or cut and paste):

E:\I386\winnt32.exe /syspart:D: /tempdrive:D: /makelocalsource /noreboot

6) setup will begin and ask you if you want to upgrade or full install, make sure it is FULL INSTALL. It will then ask you for a few more THINGS including the CD key.

7) When it goes back to your desktop, turn off your PC and remove the external hard drive. It is now ready for install in the new system. It will simply continue to install windows from this point.

This worked very well and now the laptop is in working order again...
Thanks for giving up Patio, a little research never hurt anyone No problem...

BTW it wasn't about research.Seems as if procedure was found here:

Solve : Batch file help?

Answer»

Not sure if this is the right place to post this. But here goes.

I'll try and explain this as best as I could. I have a FOLDER ( lets call it A) with a bunch of files in it. I wanted these files in a .txt file ( lets call it 1) so I made a batch file [DIR /a /b /-p /o:gen >filelisting.txt]. So now I have the LIST of files from A, in this .txt file. ( 1 )

I'm going to create a subfolder in A ( lets call it B) to store some more files. What I want to do is, make another .txt file ( 2 ) with SOME file names from A and create a batch file to utilize that .txt ( 2 ) file and move those files from A, to B.

Was WONDERING if I could get some assitance please. You have a TEXT file which is a list of the files you want to move. Let's call it files-to-be-moved.txt. How you get these filenames in that file is up to you.

You can use the batch command FOR to process the file and move the files.

for /f "delims=" %%A in (files-to-be-moved.txt) do move "%%A" B

Solve : laptop problems please help?

How do I fix my laptop?
I have SEVERAL problems -
the mouse doesn't seem to work, I have tried using a usb mouse as well as the touchpad.
Left clicking doesn't often work and right clicking displays the menu for a split second before it disappears. Also programmes like taskmanager and properties menus simply disappear.
Internet pages also fail to load (sometimes opening links in a new tab works). When i try to write in the search bar the letters disappear almost as soon as they are typed.

I tried system restore. A Usb mouse, updating drivers, A registry fixer.
But it feels like the internet and mouse problem is combined, and that it's something stopping the actions of the mouse and not the mouse itself?
Please help

A registry fixer.

Uhh ohhhhh. What registry fixer?  You used it before or after these problems started?  As I understand your post, you tried that as a troubleshooting step to try to resolve the problem, in other words, after the problem started.  Is that right?

Some more info about your computer could be helpful, too.  What make and model?  Specs, such as processor, RAM, and hard drive? What protection apps (VIRUS, spyware, firewall) are you using?  Did you make any changes (install or remove software, hardware changes) just before the problem started?I used a programme i downloaded called advanced total care to diagnose and restore problems. This was after the initial problem had occurred and after I found I couldn't fix it by the usual troubleshooting, updating/rolling back drivers technique.
It didn't fix the problem and hasn't caused any others so I presume it's a moot point and can be ignored.

I hadn't made any changes, downloaded or installed anything for at least a fortnight before the problem occurred.

It's an old laptop but I'd like to get another 8 months out of it before the prices drop again in the New Year.

Xp Home Edition version 2002 service pack 3
Ei System 3082
CPU   Intel® Celeron® M 380 (1.60 GHz)
Chipset   SiS 661 Chipset
Memory   256MB DDR SODIMM
Hard Drive   40 GB NB hard drive
I use NORTON and have a medium level firewall. I don't download lots of crap and just use the laptop for word processing, emails and internet.
I downloaded avast and had 1 infected MUSIC file which i hadn't played in over a year, sent to chest and deleted that.
I have Hijackthis logs - but i got the impression I wasn't supposed to post them anywhere other than the hijackthis forum. Is this correct?

Also, clicking to refresh an internet page simply makes it load blank, if I HOLD down the function key whilst clicking - it loads.
To get anything done at the moment, and to prevent open applications closing I have to keep the function or control buton held down.

Solve : XP Repair?

Answer»

Hello folks,

There is a DLL file missing/corrupted in my Windows XP installation, and
I wanted to repair it.  Based on the instructions I found on this forum:

"After getting to the Microsoft Windows recovery console you will need to select the
Windows installation you wish to log onto. Therefore press 1 if you wish to edit the
primary Windows installation."

What other choices are there besides "Press 1", and what are they for?

Thank you for your help....

zilooIf you have only one OS installed there will be no other choices, but you will still have to press "1". You can also fix the problem from within the OS by inserting the XP CD and running: sfc /scannowIt should have only 1 listing for Windows...unless you are dual-booting.
It WOULD be HELPFUL if you could TELL us what you're seeing on your end...Whoooops..... That's okay pats, you can't ALWAYS be first  The problem started when I had left the computer unattended, and
the poor thing had gone into the sleep mode.  When I came back,
all my attempts for reviving it were futile...neither pressing keys,
moving the mouse, stroking the monitor, speaking into the speakers,
chanting and burning incense had no effect on bringing life back into
the cold metalic CASING that once showed signs of life  .

After pressing the reset button, every time windows was about to be
uploaded, the computer simply hanged right in the middle of the
bluish progress bar marching left to right across the SCREEN.........

the computer to typing the given command....

Thank you

Thank you all for your prompt response.  I was finally able to get to the windows by
pressing "R" for command prompt repairing.  I ended up with C:\windows; but there
was no sfc.exe file in that directory to execute, and so I could not get any result by
sfc /scannow option. Is there anything else that I should have done?

Alternatively, I followed the first route and repaired the windows.

Solve : Password recovery XP?

Answer»

I have a computer With XP professional that needs a password and tried some of the ways around, but just keeps asking for password. I am able to put XP home edition in  cd and run repair console and from there I get command prompt so I can copy files to and from the hard drive, what I was wondering if I can copy the boot.ini file or other files that may be needed from a machine that is not password protected to one that is to make it WORK without password?

Johnhttp://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&aq=5&oq=forgot&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGLL_enUS304US305&q=forgot+windows+xp+passwordHi,
There are two ways to avoid password asking feature are as under:
1). You need to start your system in Safe Mode and type your FIRST Admin Password and then remove the password. Then turn off and turn on your computer in safe mode.

2). You need to replace few files to remove the password from your computer completely, however you need OS CD for it.

The steps are as under:

Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

Click to select any OPTIONS that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.

When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.

When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.

At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each LINE:

MD tmp

copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak

copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak

copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak

Solve : Computer won't start because of missing or corrupt file?

Answer»

Everytime I start my computer it gives me the message Windows\System32\config\system because the file is missing or corrupt, I have a XP cd, but nothing happens when I reboot. It just takes me back to the same windows\systems...... message! It's as if the computer only has that one page on the whole thing! Any suggestions? I don't mind loosing everything on the computer, I just want it to work again EVENTUALLY!
Boot to your CD and select Recovery Console.

Type the following:

REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM SYSTEM.OLD
COPY C:\WINDOWS\REPAIR\SYSTEM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIGThanks for your response! How do I boot to my cd if it just gives me the same response again. After the Windows\system32\config\system message, it gives me the option to press 'r' and when I do, it just reboots and gives me the same message... Windows\System32\config\system again - it's very frustrating!Change the boot order in bios so the cd is first on the list then reboot with the cd in the drive.THanks, it feels like progress!
However, the REN command works, but when I type in the COPY command it says 'the system cannot find the file specified' ?In the following line make sure there is a space between "SYSTEM" and "C"
COPY C:\WINDOWS\REPAIR\SYSTEM space here C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIGIt's not working, still ssys the system cannot find the file specified - I've had a FRIEND check it with me...Okay, then you'll have to do a repair install. Boot to the XP CD and this time choose the SECOND repair option, allowing XP to install on top of itself. All files and settings should remain INTACT. When you are finished, be sure to go to Microsoft Update and download & install all updates. Thanks ALLAN - I've now managed to get as far as installing windows again, however the installation just goes to a blue screen after the installation period - when the computer should start 'finalizing installation'. I've tried rebooting and starting all over, but it still stalls after 'Installing Windows' as the 'finalizing installation' piece begins...? Any suggestions? You ARE doing a repair install and not a new install, right (not that there's much you can do about it either way at this point)? What is the installer doing just before you see the blue screen (what was the last successful step in the installation PROCESS)? Is there an error message on the blue screen? If so, what is it?It takes me through the Installation process and that seems to finish because it moves over to 'Finalizing Installation' 9 minutes remaining and then a blue screen with nothing on it... - I'm supposed to be doing a repair, but good question, it does take me through the setup Windows process...? Quote from: Allan on May 13, 2010, 06:16:37 AM

What is the installer doing just before you see the blue screen (what was the last successful step in the installation process)?
It said Finalizing installation ... setup will complete in approximately 9 minutes ...saving settings ... then I can hear the cd run for about 5 more seconds and then the blue screen...

Solve : help with multiboot vista/7/xp?

Answer»

i want to have a multiboot on my computer with vista (ALREADY installed), 7 and XP. i installed windows 7 and i have a dual boot everything works fine, but when i install xp i can only boot in XP not the other OS. vista and 7 are STILL listed in "my computer" but i dont have an OS choice at the boot screen.Hi,

If you have more than one operating system on your computer, you can set the operating system that you want to use as the default one for when you start your computer:
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
Under System startup, in the Default operating system list, click the operating system that you want to start when you TURN on or RESTART your computer.
Select the Display list of operating systems for check box, and then type the number of seconds for which you want the list displayed before the default operating system starts AUTOMATICALLY.

To manually edit the boot options file, click Edit. Microsoft strongly recommends that you do not modify the boot options file (Boot.ini), because doing so may render your computer unusable.Generally you want to install the oldest OS first and the newest last so the boot loader will be able to manage them. Alternatively you can download and use a utility such as EasyBCD to manage the boot process (http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1)If XP has been installed to a seperate HDD the option will not be shown...you can select which drive to boot to via the BIOS...
However try Easy BCD as suggested above 1st.

Solve : xp pro continually restarts during boot?

Answer»

I have a computer running Windows XP Pro. When the boot process gets to the Windows SPLASH screen it can barely be seen and then the computer restarts. I have changed power supplies and RAM and no change. I put in the Windows XP Pro cd and did a repair install, as long as the cd is in the drive, Windows will boot fine. but when I TAKE the cd out, it starts resetting itself during boot. It is also the same way if I run chkdsk /r. I have also ran fixmbr and bootfix with no changes. Then when it let me into Windows using the above method, I turned off the RESTART on error. I reset the computer and got the following BSOD

file xtmqseqs.sys

Can someone please help me get the computer back up and going? I'd suggest downloading and running a ram diagnostic utility (ie, memtest) as a first step in diagnosing the problelmHi,
To resolve this problem, start your computer in Safe mode, remove the display adapter, rename the .inf files that are associated with the display adapter drivers, restart your computer in Normal mode, and then update your display adapter drivers. The following steps describe this procedure in more detail:
Start Windows in Safe mode. To do so:
Restart the computer, and then press F8 while the computer starts.
On the Windows Advanced Options Menu that appears, use the ARROW keys to select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.
Use the ARROW keys to select the operating system to start, and then press ENTER to start Windows XP in Safe mode.
In the message that states that Windows is running in Safe mode, click Yes.
Click Start, click Run, type msinfo32 in the Open box, and then click OK.
Under System Summary, expand Components, and then click Display.
In the right pane, note the information that corresponds to the INF File item, for example, Nv4.inf, Oem0.inf, or Atim128.inf.
Quit the System Information utility.
Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
Expand Display adapters, right-click the display adapter, and then click Uninstall.
Click OK.
Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
In the COMMAND Prompt window, type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each line:
ren %systemroot%\inf\INF file name from Step 5.inf *inf.old
ren %systemroot%\inf\INF file name from Step 5.pnf *pnf.old
Close all open windows, and then restart the computer in the typical manner.
Log on to Windows by using an account that has administrative privileges, and then wait for Windows to detect new hardware.
When the Found New Hardware Wizard starts, click Cancel.

If you receive a stop error after you remove the updated display drivers, restart the computer and use the Last Known Good Configuration option. To do this, restart the computer, and then press the F8 key while the computer starts. On the Windows Advanced Options Menu that appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.

If you receive a "System Has Recovered from a Serious Error" message when Windows starts, restart the computer again. This error message does not recur.
Ignore the above post for now.Not sure where these are copied/pasted from but some are innaccurate at best...

I agree with Allan.

Review ongoing.

For example the above instructions upon successive re-boots only eliminates the error message from recurring...it does not in fact correct the driver issues...which this most likely is... Quote from: Allan on April 12, 2010, 05:43:39 AM

I guess it's possible but if the system reboots before the gui loads I wouldn't think it's very likely. Quote from: Allan on May 13, 2010, 05:38:43 AM
I guess it's possible but if the system reboots before the gui loads I wouldn't think it's very likely.

Why? Badly written kernel-mode code causes blue-screens; viruses are notorious  for being constructed from bad code. Evidently whoever wrote this "xtmqseqs.sys" driver (which is almost certainly malware) was probably designed to compromise the system from kernel mode. Of course since a kernel-mode driver is usually set to startup with the other drivers (that is, before the GUI loads) it's not surprising it would crash then.

Solve : Keyboard Wont Work?

Answer»

I am running Win XP. I opened my computer this afternoon and the screen was full of malware saying my computer was infected and buy thier removal TOOL. I could not open any programs or even use the keyboard. I restarted in safe mode and did a system restore for 2 days ago and everything looks OK except the keyboard wont work. It will work when I go to CMOS but once windows loads it wont work. The lights come on but none of the keys will work. Some of the hot buttons work. I have uninstalled through the device manager and keyboard in control panel and restarted. There is a screen that says that computer has detected new hardware and so I want to install, I click yes reboot and it is still x'ed out with a yellow exclamation point in device manager and won't work. I did troubleshoot and get this.
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. ( Code 38)"
Can anyone please help, I have done the uninstall and reboot ten times and same result. Thanks for any and all advice.
System restore does not delete malware. You should go to the malware forum on this site and follow the instructions in the FIRST pinned post.Hi,
Please follow the below mentioned steps to run an ANTIMALWARE software to remove malware from your computer. As it seems to be a malware issue.

1). Download malwarebytes from below link:
     http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button

2). Install it and run a full scan for your computer.
(Make SURE while running full scan you are not connected to internet)

3). After running scan delete all the infected files and data.
4). Restart your computer and check the boot up speed.
 Everything should work fine.pcs365_2:

Solve : Computer slow to shutdown?

Answer»

When I GO to shutdown my laptop, it takes several tries. I get the message: Ending program PLEASE wait. Sometimes I'll get this three or four times before it shuts down.If you want to know which program is causing the problem, open msconfig and to a selective STARTUP (stop everything from loading) and reboot. Then shut down. Assuming the shutdown is normal (and it will be), start adding items back one at a time, rebooting and shutting down after each, until the problem recurs and you'll have IDENTIFIED the culprit. If you want a band-aid fix, do the following:

1) Make sure "clear pagefile at shutdown" is not enabled:
start - run - regedit
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]

Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0

2) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry KEY:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1 in the Value data text box

For the next two, if the dword value indicated does not exist, create it:

Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 2000

Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000

Reboot

3) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000Hi,
Please post complete system configuration of your computer, however you can try the below mentioned steps:

1). Download Ccleaner from the below link:
 http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
2). Install the same software.
3). Run and clean all temporary files and cookies.
4). Click on Run from Start menu and type "%temp%" with out quotes.
5). Select all files and folder and press delete.
6). Run Disk cleanup and restart your computer.
Now everything should work fine.

Right click taskbar in open spot. CHOOSE Task Manager. Observer CPU hogs.

start. run [ msconfig ]

Click start tab.  Disable all programs not needed.

Run your anti virus, ccleaner and antimalware.  Buy more Ram and a faster CPU

Is the system running okay? If so, don't worry about it.Hi Allan!

System is perfectly allright! Only THING I did last time was to uninstall my Office 2010(Technical Preview) using REVO Uninstaller!

After its usual uninstallation procedure it did ask me to whether to "Restart the System" now or else. I preferred latter & went for deep scanning of leftovers like reduntant registry keys & junk files(using Revo only).

Against all registry keys & all other leftovers, I did "Select All" & removed them!?

Otherwise, System is OK!Then as I said, I wouldn't worry about it.

About 8 Bucks ...available at any PC store. Why not just do a repair installation of XP?Will the computer start and operate in "safe mode"?Yes,Safe mode is a Windows maintenance mode where only the bare minimum of drivers are LOADED. You don't have access to CD ROMS, printers, or other non-essential devices.

To get to Safe mode, press the F8 key when Windows starts to boot. You have to do this BEFORE you see the first "Windows" screen. You can start tapping away as soon as I get by the BIOS STARTUP screen or the manufacturer's splash screen. Experiment and you'll get it.

It won't let me run in safe mode tried it freezes up at one of the drivers. Thanks for the help. After about 50 power ups and downs I was able to download the documents to a flash drive. Reloaded XP and upgraded to Windows 7.

This occurs when Windows switches into kernel mode and a user-mode SUBSYSTEM, such as Winlogon or the Client Server Runtime Subsystem (CSRSS), is compromised. Security can no longer be guaranteed. Because Win XP can’t run without Winlogon or CSRSS, this is one of the few situations where the failure of a user-mode service can cause the system to stop responding. Solve : Corrupt WINXP installation files??

Answer»

I searched in the forums and couldn't come up with this exact PROBLEM, so if I NEED redirected to a previous post, I apologize in advance.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A55-S1064 laptop that I am attempting to fix for the second time. It belongs to a teenage girl who just lost her dad. This was his computer, so the sentimental value far outweighs the computer itself.

The original hard drive went bad, so I installed a new one. It is a WD 250G PATA. I installed WINXP and downloaded all the proprietary device drivers from Toshiba's support DOWNLOAD website. I installed and tested everything and gave it back to her.

Jump ahead three weeks. She calls me and says that the computer is hanging on bootup. When I got it back, it would go through the boot test, then hang. I finally got it to throw me an error stating that Windows was unable to load because the Windows\system32\config\system file is corrupt.

I used the installation disk to get to the Recovery Console, and there were no \config\ANYTHING files. I reinstalled WINXP and got to the desktop. Started downloading the device drivers and the first restart came with the error above. So, back through the Recovery Console I go. The config\FILES are there, but I can't copy them or delete them.

I decided to start fresh, so I removed the partitions and am completing a fresh install.

Am I missing something? CHKDSK showed nothing. Stated the disk was healthy and clean. Is there maybe a boot sector virus I'm missing?

Thanks in advance!

Jennifer

Did you use a Toshiba restore CD for this and/or a Windows XP CD ? ?No Toshiba CD. I used a Windows XP disk. I'm not sure at this point that a restore disk will work, given that there is a different hard drive and I've reinstalled twice. If it will still work, I may just have to purchase one. Quote from: trukkrgrrl on May 17, 2010, 06:07:30 PM

...Am I missing something? CHKDSK showed nothing. Stated the disk was healthy and clean. Is there maybe a boot sector virus I'm missing?
...
I don't think so.  Check for boot sector virus:  http://www.avira.com/en/support/support_downloads.html

Toshiba Satellite A55-S1064 DownloadsIt's probably as simple as missing drivers...laptops are finicky.
DLoad and install all the appropiate ones...MBoard chipset drivers 1st...

Unless this is an 'Ahem" version of XP of course...Thank you all for your help. It was not a boot sector virus. I ended up having to go through the recovery console, using DISKPART to delete the partition and format and reinstall. Everything is good now, but I do still have to GIVE it back to her! Again, thank you all for your advice!

P.S I have ordered a Toshiba recovery disk...just in case! Good to hear you fixed her up and Thanx for stopping back to LET us know...
Stop by anytime !

PS Remember to re-install all those laptop Drivers.

Solve : PC internet failure hours after startup?

Answer»

Hello,

I have a strange situation.  After ~6 hours of operation, my PC no longer accesses the internet.  This happens every day.  My antivirus goes blank around that time and my email dies.  Six hours later it occurs all over again.

Programs RUN from the PC operate, but at a slower speed.

How would I go about diagnosing the cause of this problem?

Thank you in advance.Who is your ISP ? ?I have Verizon FIOS but the problem existed before I switched to that service. Is this an onboard NIC or an addon card ? ?
If a card i'd buy a new one for about 15 Bucks and swap it in there...There was no add-on card.  The GUY simply switched the modem with a FIOS one.

I may be wrong about the email - the anti-virus just turned off again but the email works.

What's a NIC?

BTW I have Windows XP sp3 Network Incerface Card...
It's either a chip on the Motherboard or an add-on card.Well like I said, there is no NIC that I know of.  I built the PC myself and I know there is no such card on the mb.

My thinking is that it's software...SPECIFICALLY the OS.Does the same thing happen if you boot to safe mode with networking?I will try that, but you should also know that my 2nd PC - which has the same software and FIOS connection - does not exhibit this problem.

I'll run it in safe mode tomorrow and see what happens. Quote from: bullwinkle on May 06, 2010, 03:45:31 PM

I will try that, but you should also know that my 2nd PC - which has the same software and FIOS connection - does not exhibit this problem.
I'd be surprised if it did.Symptoms seem like DHCP lease is expiring.
Your FIOS HardwareI'm not sure what a DHCP lease is, but FIOS was installed just a few months ago.

I have not run under safe mode before so some of these results may be normal.  I selected both Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking.

However

- the resolution was 640x800 and could not be changed
- No program could access the internet
- When trying to run my antivirus program it said it was loading and then said it could not respond

Therefore I could not run a comparable test in this mode.

Solve : Antivirus Soft malware stopped, but computer still slowing/freezing -please help?

Answer»

I visited a malicious site and Antivirus Soft MALWARE invaded my PC. In safe mode, I downloaded & ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware & rkill, then ran AVG and seemed to get rid of it (according to the instructions on this site):

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-antivirus-soft

Trouble is, every 10-15 minutes or so my system now slows to a crawl or freezes entirely for about 15 minutes. Every time I reboot, a bubble pops up in the lower left corner with a list of programs Windows is still blocking, including what I think are three Antivirus Soft programs (each ENDING in "...tssd.exe"). My comp will also note that its running SLOWLY & ask if I want to switch to Windows Basic colors, but I just close this window, FEARING it might be the malware.

I suspect their continued existence on my hard drive is the problem, but the list of programs (same list as what one finds when typing "msconfig" in the Run box under the Startup tab) does not give me the option to delete them entirely. I've tried an advanced search for each by NAME (including non-indexed areas) but can't find them. The list says all three files are located under [ C:\Users\My Name\AppData\Local\...] but when I open C, Users, and the file under my name, there is no AppData folder visible.

Can anyone give any advice on eliminating the malware (if it's still there) and stopping my comp from slowing? I've tried Disk Defragmenter, clearing my Windows Explorer & Firefox caches, rerunning AntiMalware & AVG - nothing is working.

Thanks,

PROVIDED the machine is USB 2.0, other wise it will be SLOW.

Anyway, alligatorman, if you do add a second hard drive in, it might be worth moving your page file, and items that are accessed less often to it.

If it were me, the first upgrade I would do is put more RAM in it, as Patio recommended.  CRUCIAL have an awesome tool on thier site that will tell you what kind you need.  A quick google search following that should result in some cheaper sticks.

That said, I wouldn't spend too much upgrading the machine as it's fairly cheap to build a new machine (£200-£300), and you could "recycle" some parts, like the cd/dvd drive, case and possibly the PSU. Techs,

The maximum I'd spend my money on would be 3GB, but this is down to the O/S (Windows) and 32 bit addressing.

Also, you'll need to make sure you don't go over what the motherboard can cope with, so it would be worth checking that limit first.hello,

first is your Ram is not SUFFICIENT ,if it possible so improve your RAM.
to improve processing speed - delete temporary files & clean start up files (ms config)
remove unwanted files regularary & take back up of important files in other Hard drive /removable drives.

I suggest trying ipconfig.
I tried, but the black screen disappear quickly
How can SHOW IP  from hotmail e-Mail  ( for anathor ) Open a CMD prompt first.

Click the start button, then GO to Run, then type in cmd and hit ENTER, run ipconfig from there. My personal preference is to pin command prompt to the start menu. Then it's always handy.

Start > all programs > command prompt > right click and click on pin to start menu.Download it for free:  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=00A974B4-0BFA-4065-8081-BBAEBF2A5CB6&displaylang=en
