Solve : Computer Freezing an odd freeze.?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a problem that I have never experienced before. It's puzzling me as I am still unable to pinpoint the problem.
Originally about 2 days ago I started getting random crashes. ALL of them took me to BSOD and had the error code X08e but I never had to patience to wait for a memory kernel dump and I just restarted manually. however I remember the message and one of them was caused by sfsync02.sys (Starforce protection)

Today I found out that my system is actually not stable and will randomly crash. I first noticed it when I was playing a game and the sound of the game started looping, but I didn't have a full freeze (picture and looped sound) so I thought It was the game that was about to crash, however I attempted to start task manager and I froze. I brushed it off (even though I've never seen a sound freeze/loop without video freeze also) and manually restarted.

Then I was listening to a music track while surfing the net and all of a sudden the music just started looping...but the web browser was still responsive, so I started task manager and attempted to kill the media player, but I got as far as "are you sure" before losing video response.

The 3rd time It happend was the WEIRDEST out of all. I was again listening to music and reading some google news when the sound/music started looping. This time I reacted fast and attempted to kill the media player. I failed but something I have never seen occurred. I still had video response but my computer was dead. nothing clicks evething frozen but still was able to move the mouse and chit numlock/capslock and they too responded. I waited for about 3-4 mins and nothing happend and I kept clicking my mouse to see if it will freeze the mouse/scree but it didn't.

Here's what I did so far to try to get BSOD and a mem dump and/or fix the issue

I ran verifer and  had all the drivers loaded and restarted...computer was slow as *censored* however I couldn't get it to freeze until i went on the game  (but it did not take long, I would say about 5 minutes) and I was unable to get a BSOD

I uninstalled the Starforce Drivers with the driver removal tool from their site. I did a test and I got a hang/freeze in the same fashion.

I ran a mem test/ CPU stress test for 20 minutes and there was no issues . no memory read errors and my cpu didn't break a sweat. couldn't get it to BSOD. thought the problem disappeared. However the problem still occurs.

I suspect this is a soundcard issue in either it's hardware or software. I would like to know what I can do to diagnose my soundcard or if anyone has some suggestions on how to successfully BSOD my pc or fix my issue.

Again the issue is Sound looping followed by a video/input freeze 5-10 seconds later.

Thank you in advance

ati 4890 1gb ram videocardJust want to update people that I may have figured out that it's something to do with the Soundcard "Doubly Digital Live" In windows XP

Also to my surprise I booted into windows 7 and I am not seeing any crashes and I have been abusing the soundcard for the past hour...with the same driver package installed on win 7 as win xp

I am REALLY confused right now, But at least happy to know that my soundcard is working hardware wise. The sound card may require older drivers written specifically for XP on the XP side...Thanks for the reply Patio

I just wanted to mention the vendor has the all in one driver for all OSes , I cannot choose one for xp. Also that doesn't explain how the card has been working fine for the past 2 MONTHS since I bought it.I would run checkdisk just to be sure your hard drive isn't causing some of the problem.

Hi,

I ran a chkdsk on my HDD that the game is on. I also ran a chkdsk on the drive the system root is in.

There is no errors, or doesn't seem to be.

Also I ran windows 7 partition and started the same game on that same HDD, game ran for hours. no hickups

I thought my HDD was going out like a champ (been with me for a while) but it's still going strong from my peliminary testing.

Also I hear no clicking, no spin up/down nothing out of the HDD's when the sound freeze starts.

Speedtest 4.40 says my 3 HDDs have no issues Hi, I just ran a program to clean up my registry but I backed up my registry before doing so because I know these programs are not usually realiable. I thought If there was an issue I would just boot up into safe mode and restore etc.

Now my windows xp will not boot up in any mode :/. I went into recovery console and it says error reading disk. But I went into windows 7 and there's no problems. currently I am error checking the HDD that has win xp on it.

Maybe the MBR got messed up somehow?

Any ideas?I wish this forum had an edit function so you dont post 3 times in a row

Anyways the XP was not booting up due to my camera being plugged into the USB half way. it was messing with mup.sys .

So now I'm back on there..

I feel like i keep solving my own issuesI'm raising this thread from the dead.

Since I cant find a solution to my problem, can anyone give me advice on a program that can export/import registry?

I'm thinking that I should just reinstall windows XP SP3 without a format and then import the registry from old windows to new one, as this solution may keep my programs running. I wouldnt import windows registry, just the software.

Well you moved faster than we did...so no you weren't talking to yourself...
ERUNT will backup/save and restore an existing registry...however this needs to be done while XP is in good shape and is bootable so that' option is out of the question...
There is another manual method used by booting to the Recovery Console.

If you are comfortable with command line options  Here Ya go...

If that's not your bag then a  Repair Install of XP  would be the way to go...

NOTE: I suggest reading thru it and printing out a reference copy before attempting it...done properly ALL your data and apps will be intact...make 1 mistake and ALL your data and apps will be gone but you will have a fresh XP install...

WARNING: Depending on your setup the Repair Install may affect the dual-boot setup but that can be dealt with after the fact... Quote from: patio on May 19, 2010, 06:16:48 PM

No I am able to boot into windows just fine, the issue with the immediate restart was because of the USB hub in my pc. I fixed that. I am back to the problem with the looping after playing music on my winxp.

I will try ERUNT, but will it backup everything or can I just back up whatever Trees I select ?

my theory is this. resinstalling windows xp without reformating but keeping all the resgistry files for my programs will not require me to reinstall EVERYTHING. since everything still points to the same place as the registry.
or am I wrong?ERUNT does the whole registry...
In regards to the 2nd question i suggest reading the info on Repair Install in the link provided...

Posting the entire BSOD message would also be helpful.

Solve : installing bitdefender on winXP problem?

Answer»

hello, i have a dell latitude 110L laptop. it can  and is connected to internet BUT I CANT open web page. My instructor told me it COULD be virus or spyware and to boot up in safe mode and disable all services and try installing virus PROTECTION. sounded easy but when i put the disk in and hit install it goes thru the process and at the end it comes back with a message " The SYSTEM administrator has set policies to prevent this installation" BUT i am the admin of my laptop. soo i tried to browse disk and run a scan from the CD that also will not work comes back with a internal error and it seems to think i am not the admin. Well i googled the error and read to go into control panel and acount policies and change things there also i was told to disabled something in group policy hit enforcement and blah blah lol well im wondering if ANYONE has had similiar problem and can help me.  i thought since my problem in on my laptop that has windows XP installed that would mean i post under windows xp, am i mistaken? hoppefully not. lmk plz

Solve : Connected to the Internet, but browsers can't browse.?

Answer»

Recently got a bit of malware on all of my PC's thanks to an XSS attack on one of my frequented sites. The Windows 7 and Vista PC's were mostly unaffected (all I did was remove the malware with BitDefender, they work fine now) but the XP computers will not browse the internet any longer. They could browse before removing the malware, but browsing was severely hampered by redirects. Now it doesn't work at all.

IPConfig says I'm connected to my router, but there's no DHCP enabled. The anti-virus can update, but nothing else internet-related will work. Any ideas how to fix this short of reinstalling the OS?Try a system restore to a day when all was well. The recent cleanup will remain in effect.

Good Luck

p.s  Download and install IE8. ( remove the previous IE before the installation of IE8. )

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/Internet-explorer/default.aspx

Well, there's no restore dates prior to the day I got the malware. I already have IE 8 installed too.

I think it has to do with the DHCP being disabled, but I don't know what to try in order to fix it.I'd Clik Here...   and follow the instructions for posting your logs...

Chances are you're still infected...You're right, I should have posted this in the malware section. My apologies for using the incorrect forum.

I'll do the things suggested in that thread, then post the results. No problem...Well, neither MBAM or SuperAntiSpyware came up with anything. But, they wouldn't update so it's possible something could have been missed. I uninstalled BitDefender but that made no difference.

Btw, HPVC and BatteryMon were written by me.

Try this to reinstall the TCP\IP stack.
Try this:
U could also try fixing the present Win. Boot from the Win CD and do like if u were going to a install. DO NOT USE THE REFORMAT OPTION. Just follow instructions and it will get to a fix this install option. Choose this option and like it run. It will take about 30 mins for this fix. Write back and let us know?
PS do not use the manufacturers CD. It has to be a Win CD SP2 or SP3. TCP Fix...

If indeed this is what it is...Temporarily got distracted with other things, but I came back today and tried the TCP fix. It worked on my laptop, but I decided to throw the other computer in the dumpster since it was so old anyway. I'll toss that TCP fix program onto my backup hard drive in case it happens again. I appreciate the assistance. Quote from: BaRR on May 21, 2010, 05:54:26 PM

Does this happen only on the internet?
Do y you have an LCD MONITOR?Did this just start or has it always been this way? If it just started, what is different since the LAST time it worked properly (new hw, SW, virus, error, etc)?I think I see what you are talking about.  Can you go into your theme set up and check it there?the program is "any video converter", but it tends to blot out the words on iTunes alsoIf you remove the "any video converter" program, and reset hour PC, does the problem go AWAY?
If so, the try and download the file again.

Solve : canot play videos on my computer?

Answer»

I cannot play a video on my computer. I get the blue screen of death and my computer shuts down. I did update my NVIDIA drivers, but that didn't help.  I also cannot burn a cd.  I have Roxio 7.  The video should come up in windows MEDIA player, but INSTEAD it just shuts down the computer. Post the entire BSOD message including the gibberish...After a year of wrangling with this, we finally figured out what was wrong.  I NEEDED a decoder.  Somehow, I didn't have the one I needed even after reformatting which I would have thought it would have been on the RESTORE disk.  Anyway, I bought it for $20.00 for NVIDIA graphics card.  I guess I explained it right, not sure..

Solve : BSOD--reinstalled windows, and replaced RAM.?

Answer»

My computer started BSODing, so I figured RAM, so I got some more and switched it out, but it continued, so I reinstalled windows (my install CD is XP with no SP's, so I update it up to SP3), then when I go to do something after all of that, it BSOD's (like installing wireless router driver, ATI driver, etc.) I'm thinking my motherboard may be MESSED up, but I want to know if there is a sure way to find out before I waste the money. My computer is fairly new, I built it a year and a half or so ago. Because I can reinstall Windows and that happen while I put a load on the computer, I can only assume it's hardware related, mobo is a Jetway HA06, I use G.Skill RAM, and an AMD quad 2.6 GHz (no overclocking). I have overclocked it in the past, but I never went above 3.6, and I only did it for short durations to test it out, so I have my doubts it is the CPU. Which leaves the mobo as the last thing to check out. Unless there is a BSOD failure from a HDD, I haven't looked into it that much, but any help would be appreciated.Post the entire BSOD messages including the gibberish.Booted my computer in Safe Mode and looked at the event viewer, I can only assume that the one with "Save Dump" as the application/source would have to be it, since the error message in the file read:

"The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x100000d1 (0x0042351a, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xb33cccd9). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini051710-01.dmp."

The computer closes out to fast for me to read the actual error message on the screen when it flashes, and I don't know if there is a way to fix it so that it lets me read all of it. That's what I got from the event viewer as the error message. Any help is appreciated.Boot to safe mode...
Go to Control Panel/System/Advanced/ and uncheck "auto restart on errors...re-boot.
You will now get BSOD's without a restart.
Post the ensuing messages...That was the most I've written all year by hand, computers are far too convenient:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

That's what it said, but the MAIN screwed up thing is that it almost has to be hardware, since I had just updated to SP3, when I decided to start installing non-standard windows things, so I start installing my Wireless PCI adapter driver, and at around 75% it went boom. So, the driver wouldn't have been completely installed correctly. and since that was the first non-windows standard thing on there, it makes it almost 100% hardware related.

Nope. sounds like the wireless driver was the cause of the problem.

EDIT: the reason I say this is because most driver installations also Start the driver later in the install- 75% sounds about right for it to do this- and the moment the installer started the driver, poof- BSOD. Quote
it makes it almost 100% hardware related.
This would be probably an incorrect diagnosis...

Quote
The system attempted to access pageable memory using a kernel PROCESS IRQL that was too high. The most typical cause is a bad device driver (one that uses improper addresses). It can also be caused by caused by faulty or mismatched RAM, or a damaged pagefile.

You either have a bad stick of RAM out of the new bunch or it may be incorrectly matched...
DLoad and run MemTest...do 1 stik at a time...

Actually RAM is hardware so disregard my 1st reply...Will check the RAM, I'll also reinstall windows and see if I can get the same results by installing a different driver to see if I might need a new wireless adapter card. Will look into RAM first, since it sounds more probable (I used my comp with the same Wireless adpater driver, and it didn't BSOD before.) I haven't used memtest in such a long time, if there are any bad addresses is it bad, just running a normal test?Yes,
With MemTest any errors at all = bad RAM.
A new NIC card is about 15 Bucks...wait a second here...

then when I go to do something after all of that, it BSOD's (like installing wireless router driver, ATI driver, etc.)

Install your motherboards chipset driver First, before any other driver.Sorry it's been so long that I've updated, haven't had a chance to work on my computer. Did this morning, my RAM is good, but it BSODed when I booted up, which was a different BSOD code, blamed RT2500.sys, so I remove my NIC, and it rebooted fine. So, my NIC is to blame, I think I might just use Belkin after this experience. I'll tell if a new NIC fixes it.Got a Belkin Wireless N USB Adapter (Figured if it didn't fix it, I could use it somewhere else.) And my computer has been up and running 26 hours with no problems. I've been up with it editing minor things I have an OCD about with a clean install. So, my computer is completely fix from what I can tell. (Haven't run 'regedit' yet, usually edit random things.) Thanks for all the help.Good News indeed...stop by anytime...

Solve : huge computer problem?

ok... so a few months back i opened up the case to see what KIND of RAM i had to see how much it costs to upgrade, and now everytime i try to boot it comes up with "load dll needed for kernel" and whenever i try to boot from cd it comes up with a different error each TIME. i also cannot open my top cd drive :S thanks so much for the help

when you opened up the computer, you MAY have accidentally knocked a cable loose. Doublecheck all connections. Hi,

Use the ERD disk and repair the installation. Choose to replace all files, and then replace only the Hal.dll and Ntoskrnl.exe files.

If you can start another installation of Windows NT on the same computer, you can expand the correct Hal.dll and Ntoskrnl.exe files from the Windows NT CD-ROM. To do so, follow these steps:

1). Boot to the working version of Windows NT.
2). Start a command prompt.
3). Change to the CD-ROM drive.
4). Change to the appropriate folder on the CD-ROM (for EXAMPLE, I386 for Intel-based computers).
5). Type expand hal.dl_ \system32 where is the path of the non-functioning Windows NT folder.
6). Type expand ntoskrnl.ex_ \system32.
7). Restart the computer into the other Windows NT installation.

Solve : NTRDL is missing, tried everything, still not working??

Answer»

I'm running an IBM ThinkCentre with Windows XP that has been kept upgraded with the Service Packs and other updates.

I ended up with the NTLDR is missing error. So USING my husband's computer (matches mine), I searched for how to fix it, tried all the ideas I found and none of them worked. One of them gave me an error that hal.dll was missing.

When I try to do anything, my computer "loses" the hard drive. It will show up in a BIOS check and will still be in the list when I get to the menu to select my CD drive as the boot drive. It takes me through to the menu where I can choose to REPAIR Windows and that's where the hard drive disappears from the lists.

Very frustrating and because I have irreplaceable data on the drive, formatting isn't an option unless there is a way for me to recover that data first.

Thoughts?

Use a SATA port higher than 2...

I'm looking at my motherboard right now..there are four connections for the SATA cable to go from the hard drive to the board. I've tried all four connection points and the computer is not acknowledging the drive, even in the BIOS.

Thoughts?

MonaDead drive ? ?No..I can hear it working when I start the computer. As soon as Windows starts, it stops going. During start up, it'll run, but won't show up in the BIOS.

I'm beginning to think it's possessed.  If it's not showing up in the BIOS but you know it's spinning up the partition table is likely fried beyond control...

Solve : problem viewing hidden file in my computer?

Answer»

hello please i have problem viewing hidden file in computer, i set the show hidden file in the(tools in my computer) and remove the check box and still yet it refuse to show hidden files.I have tried many ways that i know still yet it refuse to show those hidden file,so please i want know other ways that i can solve this terrible problem in my computer.Yeah, Microsoft is annoying how it plans on hiding system files and even viruses from ya... It's one of the FIRST things I fix.

I simply browse 'My Computer' > Tools > Folder Options (if tools isn't showing press ALT to toogle)

Under view tab >

1. Show Hidden files, folders and drives (toggle on)

2. Hide extensions for known file types (untick this! viruses learnt to add double extensions to confuse users)

3. Hide Protected Operating System files (Recommended... to untick this, as Microsoft just wants to hide from ya even if you do know what your doing, yeah, yeah, dangerous if you don't know what ya up to)

Click Apply, then OK

Now you need to be logged in as an Admin or have Admin rights to view those hidden files or they will still remand hidden.

So the BASIC way still not working??? Hack it!

Start >> Run >> (type) regedit
Note: Be careful in the Register Editor, back it up by exporting the folder/keys before MODIFYING and know what you are doing! Don't mess anything your not sure on. You are now god in a world of mess, lol.

find this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced. Go to the rightside of the window, where the values are. Find the value "Hidden" . Rightclick it and MODIFY it to 1.

If that failed - You can also try to Start >> run >> (type) sfc /scannow

Still nothing? Final option, Advance tweaking:

Backup these keys first! Check these keys are the same or save the content to a notepad file, rename with .REG extension and run...

Note: The threat of a possible virus could be keeping it from showing. I know of an autorun virus that affects the above mentioned registry-keys in order to hide itself. Scan your computer and ensure it's clean.

Step 1: type "cmd" in Run
Step 2: Type these commands

Now u can see if there is an autorun.inf file virus to clean or remove. It should be "Files not found" on your hard drives. If infected ensure you also check and clean flash drives, etc, it spreads to all devices including iPods, etc.

Solve : Possible corrupted Windows XP????

Answer»

When I attempted to boot up my Windows XP computer Wednesday night it would show the Windows XP screen with the green bar going across.  After that screen it would go black & a blue screen would pop up.  After that blue screen the system would immediately reboot.  I was unable to read the blue screen cause it would only appear for a second--if that.  I was able to fix this by doing a Windows installation & choosing the repair option.  Now this system will boot into Windows, but my problem is that Outlook Express will not open.  When I click on it, the computer beeps and does nothing.  No error message is displayed.  I was going to try to run Windows update, but when trying to open IE I get an error that says:

iexplorer.exe-Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point setdlldirectoryw could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.DLL

I've done a bit of research and found that I could try system restore or going into control panel & removing OE & re-adding it.

If I am able to get OE up and running again, I'm going to backup the emails and address book & rebuild this system cause something is definitely wrong.

I'm a PC support specialist, and this issue is really bugging me cause it's my own PERSONAL computer & things aren't supposed to go wrong with my computer!

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks.Outlook Express is a part of Internet Explorer, so, if IE doesn't work, so OE won't.
Did you try to reinstall IE?I never even thought of reinstalling IE.  I tried that and OE works!  IE doesn't, but I use Firefox, so that's not the end of the world.  I was able to back up my Outlook messages & addresses.  I'm now working on rebuilding this system cause I don't believe it is very stable.

Thank you so much for your help! You're very welcome Hi,

RESOLUTION:

To recover your computer, follow these steps:
1. Start your computer and log on as you typically do.

Note If your computer will not start correctly, start the computer in Safe mode. For additional information, click the FOLLOWING ARTICLE number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
315222 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222/) A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP
2. When you receive the error message, press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to open TASK Manager. You can safely ignore any additional error messages that may appear.
3. On the File menu, click New Task (Run...).
4. In the Open box, type control appwiz.cpl, and then click OK. You can safely ignore any additional error messages that may appear.

Note If the Add or Remove Programs tool (Appwiz.cpl) does not open, type the following line in the New Task (Run...) box to remove the Internet Explorer fix, and then go to step 5:
%windir%\$NtUninstallKB834707$\spuninst\spuninst.exe
5. In the Add or Remove Programs window, click Windows XP Hotfix – KB834707, click Remove, and then follow the instructions.
6. When the Finish button becomes available, click Finish, and then let your computer to restart, even if it seems that the removal process is not complete. You can safely ignore any messages about additional software or hotfixes that are installed during this process.

Warning Although your computer may successfully start without error messages, your computer is still in an incomplete Windows XP SP2 state. You must complete the remaining steps and reinstall Windows XP SP2.
7. After your computer restarts, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
8. Click Add or Remove Programs, click Windows XP Service Pack 2, click Remove, and then follow the instructions. If you receive a message about software that you may have installed after you installed Windows XP SP2, make a note of the titles. You may have to reinstall these products after you reinstall Windows XP SP2.

Note If you cannot access Add or Remove Programs, use Task Manager as described in steps 1, 2, and 3. Remove Windows XP Service Pack 2 by typing the following in the New Task (Run...) box:
%windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe
9. After your computer restarts, visit the Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) Web site. Reinstall Windows XP SP2.I for one don't understand the last post.....

Oh well.....

Solve : faulting module renddx9.dll?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP through Virtualbox, and i've had NUMEROUS problems PREVENTING me from playing games. My current issue, and hopefully the last is my messed up DirectX.
This is my problem

I've tried to re-install DirectX but it didn't fix the problem, what can i do?Short answer/tl;dr VERSION: Virtual Machines + Games = bad bad idea (usually).

Longer answer: 3D support in a virtual machine is flaky at BEST.  They tend to emulate older graphics hardware through software, and (usually) can't communicate with the host's video card directly.  Older games may work, but don't try to play Crysis or anything like that through a virtual machine.

This is also a reason why VMs running Windows Vista or 7 can't run Aero.

With all that being said, you can try downloading the latest DirectX updates and installing them, but don't hope for any miracles.

Oh, bummer. I guess the only real fix would be to install the real deal.
I guess i could just install Windows XP as a dual boot and use it for gaming... THANKS for the response, I'm glad i know the reason now.

Solve : List of Files?

Answer»

Is it possible to print a list of files that are on a 3.5 diskette WITHOUT opening “explore”, CLICKING on A: drive and doing a print screen, save to a word document?  I find this very tedious.  I have a huge amount of 3.5 diskettes that I need to convert to cd-r and provide a “table of contents” for the cd-r.Start->Run:

CMD /c dir A: /s > temp.txt&notepad temp.txt

this will open a complete listing of the files and directories on the disk in drive A:.

Another one you might TRY might be

cmd /c tree A: /f /a > temp.txt&notepad temp.txt

This one shows the directory tree, sort of like how explorer shows FOLDERS in the left hand pane (with branches).

Hope this helps

Solve : Advent Wireless not working?

Answer»

I have put a new hard drive in my Advent 7027 laptop.
Installed Windows XP Home edition which came with the laptop.
Windows has done its updates and everything works really well, the laptop is actually running FASTER than I can ever remember.
My problem is the Wlan.
I have internet access through a cable.
When I press the Wlan button on the top of the laptop Windows media opens.
I can not see Wireless in the device manager.
When I installed the utilities cd I noticed the Wlan option was grayed out so I installed it after exploring the cd.Hi,

•Click on Start-->Run and type in services.msc
•Right-click on the service called Wireless WLAN Utility and click on Properties.
•For the Startup type select Enable (if disable is selected).

A problem can arise when both utilities are enabled and both of them are trying to manage your wireless networks. The solution is to disable one of the utilities. We recommend that you disable the Dell utility and let Windows manage your wireless networks. THANKS for the help.
I have run services.msc and looked through the list but the option you suggested is not there.
The nearest thing to it is wireless zero configuration which is set to automatic statup type with options for manual or disable.Did you re-install the Advent Drivers ? ?
MBoard chipset drivers go 1ST...after that the order does not MATTER...I ran the Advent system recovery disc which came with the laptop.
Then installed Drivers from the utilities disc as follows
AGP Driver
VGA Driver
Audio Driver
Lan Driver
Modem Driver
USB 2.0 Driver
PCMCIA Driver
I do not remember the order I did them in.
Finally as the option for Wireless Lan Driver was grayed out and un clickable (is that a word?) I ran the install after exploreing the disc.DLoad and install a fresh copy of the WLAN drivers from their site...Thank you for your help, but I do not know what site to download from.
Advent do not apear to have a site, I believe it is a PCWorld brand so I looked on their site but I could not find any Driver downloads there.
Basically I am confussed, I have spent a lot of time looking through various sites for drivers and found nothing that suits.
I may take the easy option and use a wirless card in the slot, shame since the Laptop has a built in Wireless option which always used to work well.
Again thanks for the help, it is appriciated.A quick Google search pointed to a few places mentioning an Intel wireless driver for that specific model, so try here:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Wireless+Networking&ProductLine=Intel%C2%AE+WiFi+Products&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+PRO%2fWireless+2100+Network+Connection

If that doesn't work, you may have to disassemble the laptop and remove the internal wireless card from the laptop.  From there, look for a brand name, model number, or something of that nature, Google it, and try to find drivers that way.

You can also download and install Everest and see if it gives you any more information...Thanks, but I have tried that and it had no effect.
I am by no means an expert but I think I have something missing that activates the driver.
Its as if I do not have wireless on my laptop. (I know I have, it used to work)
I just realised there was more to your message, I will try everest and as a last resort look to see if I can find the card in my laptop.

Thanks again.
************ PROBLEM SOLVED !!!  *******************

The wireless card was not quit in its slot, it looked like it was but it needed that little click!!
The only question now is how did it come out???
I guess I will NEVER know, I do not remember ever dropping the laptop.

Thanks for all the support.

Sometimes there is too much information.Sometimes all we need is a nudge towards the right direction.

Solve : Can't boot up computer?

Answer»

Hi,

If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

So I am trying to fix my sister-in-laws computer, it's a spanish ONE, but pretty much what happens is that Windows won't boot due to a missing or corrupt file.  It just keeps restarting and there are options to start in safe mode or normal mode, but neither work.

I downloaded ubuntu to try and start up the computer, and it seems to try and load but after about 5 mins of the ubuntu logo then the computer keeps whirring and the screen goes black.  I did leave it for half an hour or so to see if it was installing something but nothing happened.

I have an XP install CD but we need to take the files off and I guess if I put in the Windows reintall CD it will reformat the hard drive and we will lose all the files?

Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks HelenRepair Install of XP...

I suggest reading thru it beforehand paying special attention to the Warnings and printing out a reference copy before starting...

Done properly all your data and apps will be intact...

Done improperly all your stuff will be gone...but you will have a fresh install of XP.Hi,

Please try to repair your machine by following the below mentioned steps:

Let's get started!

Step 1: RULE out hardware issues. Windows Repair will only fix software problems. Hardware issues can also cause boot problems (i.e. bad hard drive, memory, CPU, or power supply).

Step 2: Backup. It's always a good idea to backup your important data before making changes to Windows XP. Relax, if you follow these instructions your data will be perfectly safe.

Step 3: Boot from your Windows XP CD. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer. When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message appears on the screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD. Can't boot from your CD? Please see the note at the bottom of this page (Configuring Your Computer to Boot from CD).

Step 4: A blue screen will appear and begin loading Windows XP Setup from the CD.

Note: RAID/SCSI/Unsupported UDMA users:
You will be prompted to "press F6 to install any third party SCSI or RAID drivers". Most users will not have to press F6, but if you are running RAID, SCSI or unsupported UDMA controllers, then you will have to have your controller drivers on a floppy disk. If you are unsure whether you have RAID/SCSI, then simply let the CD load without pressing F6.

When completed loading files, you will be presented with the following "Windows Setup" screen, and your first option. Select "To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER". DO NOT select Recovery Console.

When presented with the screen below. press the F8 key to continue.

Next, Windows Setup will find existing Windows XP installations. You will be asked to repair an existing XP installation, or install a fresh copy of Windows XP.

If no installations are found, then you will not be given the option to repair. This may HAPPEN if the data or partition on your drive is too corrupted.

Note: If you install a fresh copy, all data on that partition will be lost!

Your almost finished! Windows XP will appear to be installing itself for the first time, but it will retain all of your data and settings. Just follow the prompts, and have your CD-KEY ready if needed.

Do you have more than one system, or lost your CD-KEY? Visit the keyfinder page to retrieve your CD-KEY.

Update: Due to the proliferation of the Blaster and Welchia Worm/Virus be aware that a Repair Install will leave your system vulnerable. You can get infected within seconds. Do not go on line until you have enabled XP's firewall first.

Remember to run Windows Update! (install critical updates first)

Configuring Your Computer to Boot from CD

Many computers are not configured to boot from the CDROM. If you cannot boot from the CDROM, this is probably due to the boot order of your devices being incorrect. You can change this in the BIOS.

You enter the BIOS from the first screen you see when you turn your computer on. To enter your BIOS, most users here will press the DEL key.

Most Dell, Toshiba, Gateway, Sony & HP systems will press F2.

Compaq users will usually have to press F10.

IBM typically uses F1 or F2.

Other brands may have different keys to press to enter setup, F1, F2, Del, Tab and CTRL+S. If possible see the manual for your computer or motherboard. Also, the BIOS will usually display which button to press to "enter setup" during POST (if it flashes by too fast, press the Pause key).

When you enter the BIOS setup, you need to change the boot order. The CDROM should be setup before the Hard Drive. Each BIOS is different, but here is an example:

Note: If you need assistance with a repair installation, please start a new topic in our Windows XP Forum. This topic is also open for comments, but not all will receive a reply.

IMPORTANT NOTE: After running a repair, you may find that Windows Update refuses to install the most recent 80 patches. This is because the latest version of Windows Update is broken, and doesn't register some DLLS if they're previously been registered (as happens with a repair install). Here's a work around until they get it fixed:
1.Stop the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:
a.Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
b.At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each command:
net stop wuauserv
exit

2.Register the file that is used by Windows Update and Microsoft Update. To do this, follow these steps:
a.Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
b.At the command prompt, type the following command, press ENTER after the command, and then click OK when you receive a verification message:
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll
Note: for x64 machines regsvr32 %windir%\syswow64\wups2.dll

3.Start the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:
a.Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
b.At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each command:
net start wuauserv
exit

Not if it breaches Microsoft's copyright.

The DLoad of the Recovery Console is perfectly legal and can be posted...

However the DLoad that was from the Link Removed was a pirated butcher Russian copy of XP.

I don't believe in this instance the RC would solve the issues...it's beyond that point.

Solve : Reinstall problem?

Answer»

Hiya

My friends Compaq V5000 laptop got corrupted so I tried doing a CLEAN install with a downloaded XP HOME SP3 ISO (she no longer had her original discs, but had a product key on the back of the laptop). However, I MUST of downloaded the wrong one because the license key got rejected (I'm thinking it's because the ISO I used was a CD one as apposed to OEM? didn't know there was an OEM VERSION at the time :/). Anyway, after it got rejected, I downloaded an OEM version and tried that, but now the computer is ignoring the new disc on startup and Windows setup kicks in, wanting to resume the original installation (the CD ISO) does that sound right? I'm wondering if the OEM disc is just failing or something. Well, I already formatted the disc which had the CD version on to burn the OEM version, so I re-burned the CD version onto another disc, put the disc in, but Windows is still asking me to insert the original Windows CD (so I'm thinking the setup program must of wrote something to the disc which it obviously CANT find now?).

Basically now I cant get past this Windows setup automatic startup resume thing. Is there a way I can reformat the HDD via bios or something? it's like Windows has taken control of her hardware.

Thanks for any adviceWe don't normally assist with warez here...
But what i'd suggest doing is borrowing an MS XP CD of the same version and trying again...

I wouldn't trust any DLoaded .ISO to fix the issue...

Solve : I need help to get my pc tp boot?

Answer»

I have an xp pro x64 pc which fisrt ran slowly and stooped booting.  I saw on a forum that you can take the "c" drive out and hookit up to another computer with the same os, which I did, and then go into system RESTORE and set it to an earlier time.  I can't figure out how to do it.  Can anyone help please?First, run a full scan on the drive with BOTH your antivirus utility AND with MalwareBytes

Second, if you still want to do a system restore put the hard drive back in the ORIGINAL system and follow the instructions below:

Start your computer by selecting Safe MODE with Command Prompt.
When the command prompt is DISPLAYED, type the following: [systemroot]\system32\restore\rstrui.exe (the system root folder is the folder to which you installed the XP operating system files, usually c:\windows).

Press Enter

Now you can follow the instructions on the screen to use System Restore

There is one more possibility that your account from the ISP is been blocked or is not working. So try to contact your ISP. Quote

If you reset the modem like this you will need to set it back up. I wouldn't do that. Just shut everything down.....modem....router....computer. After a moment start the modem and wait for it to come backup....about 1 min....then restart your router...wait about 1 min....then restart your computer.

What will he have to set up? If you reset a modem it will reconfigure itself upon power up. Quote

You win......pushing the factory reset button is a good thing. It doesn't have any chance to setting the modem (depending on brand) into a state that locks it up.

And just rebooting it by powering it off and back on isn't the best WAY to handle this problem.

If you have a cable modem, you may want to also renew its IP address.  First, go ahead and release the IP address on the PC, then shut the computer down. Next, UNPLUG the cable modem for a couple of minutes, then PLUG it back in again. Once all of the modem lights are green, power up the PC again. It should automatically renew its IP at boot.Is there a router involved?

Solve : Windows XP Image?

Answer» HEY everyone..

I want to make a XP image and deploy it to multiple other systems. I have a question, what about LICENSES?
if i make an image and RESTORE it to an other system im sure i will have problems with the license KEY since its an other system.
Can anyone help?
Does anyone know a proper way of doing this whole proces?

Thanks in advance.

GucciThis will not work. when the OS is installed it runs a check of everything on the system so when you restore it to another machine you will get blue screens and driver problems.

If you have a lot of machines to load you MIGHT want to look into the System Preparation tool.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838080It WILL work if all of the systems use identical hardware. Also, certain imaging software claim to be able to restore to any system, regardless of hardware.

Regarding license issues, you need to contact Microsoft. And in the real world how offen does someone have identical hardware?

You are right Allen but in most cases people use the System Preparation tool.

In corporations? All the time.2 Topics the OP needs to read up on are Volume Liscensing deals from MS and unattended installation images...so what do u people recommend me? Using the Microsoft Preperation tool or something else?
Cause the systems i use are all from the same supplier, which means they got the same hardware etc..
So that wouldn't be any issue for the drivers right..

What concerns me are the license issues.. will i be able to change my product key after restoring the image?

Thanks a bunch people

Solve : Tried to reinstall windows xp disk and it would not install all files?

Answer»

A friends computer was acting weird so he tried to use the reinstall disk that came with it. During the installation he was getting a lot of errors and WOULD have to skip the file. He called and said he needed a hard drive. I took ONE over and spent a few hours trying to reinstall windows and it will only partially install it. This computer is around 10 yrs old has 512 memory hard drive was 40 gb  not sure about the cpu.  I did everything I could think of and I am thinking maybe his disk is corrupt ...it did the exact thing on his old hard drive. Help!! Quote

I did everything I could think of and I am thinking maybe his disk is corrupt

It could be DAMAGED, try reading the disk on another machine.   Could also be the cdrom, 10 years is a long life for an optical drive which might never have been cleaned.

Good luck.

But the install is from a CD. - Right?
The CD drive is giving the errors.
It's the drive...Thank you!!!
Hi,
It clearly seems that the CD you are using to install Windows XP is damaged. So please try to arrange some other CD Disk and try installing the OS.

If that does not work get  you CD ROM Checked, because may be your CD ROM is not functioning properly.

Thanks in Advance!Multiple and varied BSOD's are often indicative of motherboard in need of replacement. I've seen it on several occasions.okay...but my pc is old and i have d845 motherboard which is not available in market nowIs there some reason you didn't mention that in your first post? If that's the case the OBVIOUS suggestion is to use a different AV and see what happens. It would be UNUSUAL, however, for an av to be the cause of those specific HW related BSOD's - at least from my experience. It might be due to your CPU overheating. Make sure fans are on and in proper places.
You could have a faulty powerbox. The motherboard 'standby' light kept flashing (although it seemed controlled) but nowhere in the manual did it say anything about what a flashing standby light meant. It restarted itself every 10-15 minutes.
Try booting up, and entering the BIOS setup, and browsing around for CPU temperature. You may be able to find an indicator of its temperature from there. Otherwise, just leave it in that for a while for 20 minutes, and see if it restarts itself.Hi,
This problem may be because of malwareware, so try to run any good Antimalware software to clean your machine.
However there could be one more reason that your CPU is getting heatup. Please check the CPU exaust fan fitted on to the Processor.

And I would also like to know the BSOD error message you get, please try to reply in next post.In my case, it was an overheating video card.

Solve : Stumped..! With this 'New' hard drive listing!??

Answer»

Hello Folks!

Iam stumped to see this 'New' hard drive-Q:, getting listed within 'My Computer'.
Double click yields "ACCESS is denied"!

I have only single Hard drive inside with 40GB STORAGE with 2 partitions. 28GB has been allocated for Windows XP SP3 & remaining 12GB for Ubuntu 10.04.

But never before I have observed this Q: showing up under 'Hard Drive' listing!

***Another interesting point:: Right click on Q:>>Properties>>Shows up 'File System' as RAW.

Any ideas?!Refer to the attachments as well, please!

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Sounds like your partition table took a hit.  Try this - no warranties:

Open My Computer and R.click on Local Disk Q:  Select Properties>Tools and click on Check Now in Error Checking.  If you're really lucky your partition/files will be restored.lol *censored*. So you have 1 hard drive spitted in 2 partitions, one working and one not. Cant be a problem with the HDD than right? But I am not sure. Try putting the HDD on other computer and see if its working. If it is its probably from the OS, maybe you mixed XP and UBUNTU wrong. There is NOTHING wrong with the hard drive.

This is happening because Windows does not recognize or support the file system utilized by Linux. Sometimes Windows sees it, sometimes it doesn't. I PERSONALLY don't know the cause of that. Just because it's listed as RAW doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it really. RAW explained on Microsoft's TechNet:

"It's simply a disk partition that has not been formatted with an NT file system, neither FAT nor NTFS."

If you can still boot to Ubuntu fine, there is nothing wrong with the partition. Some partition programs, like Partition Magic, will recognize the partition from within Windows and will show what it is correctly, but it still won't be accessible.

Oh, and I wouldn't try repairing it as Dusty suggested. Considering Windows can't actually read the Linux partition, it might damage it trying to "fix" it.Yes Quaxo!

Iam able to boot & run Ubuntu 10.04 absolutely fine. From within Ubuntu, Iam able to access Windows files n folders & everything!

May be....I should learn to live with it (Ghost Q:)or rather IGNORE it!

Often it is said..."Ignorance is bliss"! If it's working...leave it be.

Solve : Non-latching caps-lock key :(?

Answer»

I am running Wndows XP Pro SP3 on a Dell Latitude laptop and suddenly, for no apparent reason, the caps lock key on the keyboard is NOT latching

I have tried both the laptop keyboard itself AND an external (PS/2 attached) keyboard - they both behave the same

Also, I have restarted Windows in safe mode and then the caps-lock key DOES latch - it's only when running XP normally that it doesn't latch....

I'm assuming therefore that this is a Windows problem (a bad setting somewhere?) rather than a hardware one

When I press the key, the caps-lock LIGHT does illuminate briefly, but then goes out again almost immediately

This is getting to be very irritating, so I'd appreciate any suggestion as to how to put this right

Many thanks

Nope

So far as I know, NOTHING has changed (apart from some MS fixes) SINCE this was last working

It's very odd and very annoying

Any optional MS Fixes installed?  Sometimes Microsoft Update will RECOMMEND keyboard/mouse/whatever UTILITIES (I've seen this happen when I had a Dell keyboard connected to a KVM switch--Microsoft Update recommended some HP keyboard utility).Do you have the correct keyboard driver installed? I guess so - it's been working FINE for years and has only recently started playing up

Also, when I shut down or hibernate Windows, the key DOES become latching during the Windows shutdown process! Quote from: killerb255 on May 26, 2010, 01:19:10 PM

Solve : Dual boot two copies of Win XP of different languages?

Answer»

I'm currently RUNNING Win XP (English) on C drive. How do I install another copy of Win XP (Chinese) with the boot option on startup?

ALSO, can I install both copies on the same drive?

Thank you.Hi,
you can definitely install the two copies of windows xp; one with English language and one with Chinese language, however at the time of installation of second copy you need to change the root folder. Simply you can rename the folder name with something like C:\windows2.
Please try this and reply back.Anther option is to install on a new partition. The boot.ini file presents a boot menu for the user to pick a system.
Additional information and help with the boot.ini file options. Thanks for the reply.

I've read that the system will recognize the second installation as default (primary) boot target. So, if I have one disk of 2 partitions (C: & D:), and I want the English version as main, I'll have to FIRST install the Chinese version on D:, then install the English version on C: ? Read article about Boot.ini file.

Never mind...feeling dyslexic today for some reason...:self-facepalm:

Typically, after installing an additional Windows OS, the boot.ini gets updated automatically with a choice between the most recent OS and any previous OSes with a 30 second timer (so Michael had it right the first time).

Same goes for Vista/7 and the BCD database.Attention dyslexic of the world!

Hi there everyone. For some reason I am getting office 2007 updates for my computer, which only has Office 2003 Small Business edition installed in it. What program do I have to remove to get these updates to stop?Since Microsoft integrated Office Update & Windows Update into Microsoft Update, I get the the same thing from time to time.  Don't worry about it, let it perform the update.Well, I don't exactly want to get updates for something I don't have As long as Office STILL FUNCTIONS, why do you care?  Just because it says 2007, it could ALSO be for 2003.Windows 7 uses some components that are probably updated as part of Office 2007.

heh, never mind, you're using XP. QUOTE from: Computer_Commando on May 26, 2010, 06:25:19 PM

Well, as they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Also, neither in the title nor in the DESCRIPTION does it mention anything about '03, so I would kind of doubt that it's directly intended for 2003. Perhaps it's chain-linked to some previous update that's made windows update think that I have 07 installed.I wouldn't worry about those if it's definitely comin from microsoft windows update, unless you find that those are taking up significant amount of disk space, which i doubt it will.

Solve : My Dell Inspiron 5160 will not go past the "Dell" Screen?

Answer»

It starts booting with the "Dell" LOGO screen, the progress bar reaches 3/4 of the way, then starts over. There is the F2 Setup and F12 Boot menu options, but it reboots because it doesn't give time for those options to open. Any ideas? What led up to this (new hw, sw, VIRUS, ERROR, etc)?Took it to the computer to get the keyboard replaced, possibly had Tea SPILLED on it. Worked good witht he exeption of sticky keys. New problem, but don't know if it would be related. This happened right after you replaced the keyboard because a liquid was spilled into it? And you didn't think it was worth mentioning or related? Okay.  It worked fine for about a week after the keyboard was replaced, that's why I didn't know if it was related or not.Well, you can try a repair install. Assuming there is no hardware damage it should work. Boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option and ALLOW XP to install on top of itself.

Solve : Email received from me??

Answer»

I sometimes receive emails which show me as the sender. Does this mean someone has got into my copmputer using my name to send these emails to others in my address book? What does the email say?Hi,

If it is gmail account then it seems to be gmail spam, which happens with everyone everytime. If it is someother email acccount then TRY to reset your password once and CHECK.
Make sure you don not SHARE your password with any one.

Please try to open those mails which shows that you are the sender and check sender's email address. The other possibility is that you're getting something called "self-sending spam."  Self-sending spam is a kind of spam that spoofs (or fakes) the "From" field to make it the same as the "To" field.  It's a fairly clever way to bypass spam filters, as many of them will not block e-mails sent from the owner of the mailbox.

Third-party software can be installed on mail servers to block spam, and many of them have options for blocking self-sending spam.

As for Gmail...I'm not so sure. Thanks everyone for your comments. I have deleted emails but will open any in future one to check contents. I will look at my spam CONTROL to stop any from myself. You didn't mention what email program you are using.

I've got a couple of email accounts and gmail is one of them, and I've never gotten a single spam on it.

My sister has an AOL email account and she gets more spam in a single day than I've gotten in my entire life (maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but not by much).  I've tried to get her to switch to something else, but that's like talking to a rock.I have several email accounts and have them all GO in to Outlook Express which saves me going to each in turn so I never look to see if I have spam.

After your post I have looked at two. Hotmail has a junk box which is empty. Googlemail has a spam box and has 1046 messages.

Strange - but no problem it empties itself after several days.

Solve : A Windows password script?

Answer»

A Windows password script
I am looking for a Windows password script. What I would like it to do is the following:

1.) I right click a folder &/or file and it has the option to "attach a password" in the context menu. (created by the script.)

2.) After attaching the password to the folder &/or file, it will prompt for the password when trying to open the folder &/or file & or a file inside the protected folder.

3.) Last it will need to do is extend these protection settings so if it's copied to external media, hard drives, or other computers, it will still prompt.
----------------------------------------------------
OK, some important notes:

- I don't want a programs that make you move the file/folder into a "vault or locker".

- I would like to attach a password to the file/folder with no further manipulation to the file/folder.

-"Winrar" is the closest thing to my longest most simple journey but it moves the file into a password protected archive. This would not be so bad if it DIDNT take forever to open just to populate (when you have multiple files in the archive.) This is very time consuming when you just want to open ONE file/folder.
------------------------------------------------
This is so simple yet I have failed to know end trying to find this. The mac has this built in I believe, but I have Windows. Joy for Windows .Thatd be a handy tool!
The only thing i can think of is winrar or other compression tools but..
that puts the folder into a 'locker' how you put it :/
Handy indeed

Mac has it built in and 7 versions of windows pass by without it.

Sad sad..I'm thinking if your lucky you could find a third party program that changes the (architecture?) of a windows folder and shows a new tab in the properties window to apply a password to the folder like you wanted but still keeping it a normal functioning folder.
The only thing i'm thinking is how hard it would be to put it on an external or something and still have the feature enabled :/

There is most LIKELY a code/script somewhere that does this.
On some hardout illegal site haha    Why illegal? It is to protect our information.

I know there is hope for a smarty pants to come onto this thread and paste a script for all of us.

Well...
True.

There's a bit of talk on forums about 'Microsoft Private Folder'
Try looking that up.
It seems to do the job but you need to be a genuine microsoft user. Quote from: bigbutt100 on March 30, 2010, 02:10:45 PM

Sad sad..

Actually, Mac doesn't, REALLY. It creates a password protected disk image (DMG) that contains the contents of the folder. This is directly analogous to simply using a ZIP file and windows built in zip support. It will prompt you for a password and then it will open the folder. The difference is the Mac Finder has this function built in to automatically request the password for the image and mount it if the proper password is supplied. Microsoft cannot do this due to anti-trust laws. (they have to use the same mechanism that anybody else can to create their shell extensions. Unlike Mac OS, which I don't believe even has a stable interface with which developers can create anything like a shell extension.

Anyways; the Direct analog to the mac "password protected folder" is a encrypted Zip file.

Of course it would be great if instead of a zip file, it was a password protected 'folder' instead..

Is this possible?
Now I wanna know haha.
It'll probably involve editing the registry..

As far as windows is concerned, with the default install and the "Compressed Folder" shell extension, a ZIP file IS a folder. It treats it just like it would a folder. It technically isn't a folder, but that's only a trivial detail. the Mac OS system doesn't actually encrypt a folder directory and instead does the exact same thing- it creates a disk image, plops the contents of the folder into it, and encrypts it, and then decrypts it when necessary. It like a folder, but it isn't actually a folder.

Secondly I doubt registry edits would persist across multiple machines in a external drive as the Original request wanted. Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 30, 2010, 03:11:01 PM

Is there any possible way for a program to attach a setting/script to a folder that is compatible with most windows Os's that will do such act as what 'BIGBUTT' Needs?

"Two things  - New!
by Jimmy Greystone - 3/30/10 1:56 PM In reply to: I am looking for a Windows password script by bigbutt100

Two things.

1: Why did you post a new question at the end of an old discussion?

2: Mac OS X has absolutely NOTHING like what you describe built in. I suspect you're confusing OS X's sudo prompt for something it's not.

Now, long story short, the only way you're going to be able to have everything you want in a program, is for it to be supported in the filesystem, and with Windows you have FAT and NTFS as your choices. Neither of which support anything even approaching this.

What you want SOUNDS simple, until you come across someone with a little actual programming experience, who will tell you this would require a pretty significant reworking of some major Windows components. You'd need to update the filesystem to support a specific kind of ACL, then work the file management APIs to support those as well. Then you have to wrap all that into a pretty GUI. And even then, any external devices would have to use the same filesystem, or you'd have to create a failsafe in the file manager APIs so that it will refuse to copy a file from one filesystem to another, which would greatly upset people who wouldn't be able to figure out why they can't copy some file or directory.

I don't think there's an OS out there that has anything like what you want. Mostly because there are better ways of doing it. Just like a better way of asking this question would have been to make a new topic instead of hijacking an old thread."

Well Excuse me!  I wonder why they delete the thread before I reply. You may be thinking its because he "Jimmy fatstone" wanted to end the "old" discussion, but I think he was afraid of hearing my replies. There is nothing wrong with posting on an old thread. Its an easy quick way to keep the same info on the thread instead of re-instating everything over again.

Easy is providing good customer service and good customer service is getting more people to post which gives more traffic to the site.bigbutt,

No. No filesystem updates will be necessary. What can be done is simply a better implementation of "zip" folder compression, but using strong password encryption. I believe truecrypt allows for something like this, come to think of it.

then work the file management APIs to support those as well.

Doesn't even make any sense. Not sure how somebody can change the file management API functions, or why they would, either.

yet more pure nonsense.

Anyways, I thought I mentioned it previously, but it looks like I got caught up in the exciting domain of zipped folders. Truecrypt, while I only really fiddled with it for a while, might offer something like what you are after (encrypt/decrypt on right-click menu).

Of course, part 3 is simply impossible to properly get working, unless you "auto-install" something in autorun.inf, but then you'll be flagged as an infection.

Solve : hard disk full?

i have an compaq presario SR2170NX
my MEMORY is full what should i do i have tried disk fragmentary and other software but it still full

what should i do

Do i have to buy external hardrive or something
please help

this is urgent

Find out what is filling it up and remove what you don't need.

Yes, I love my external hard drive. They are relatively cheap for the space you get. I paid $99 for 500 gig a while ago. May be cheaper these days. Just put all your music, pictures, video, or whatever it is that is taking up space on it and use that to store it.  Sorry, after I posted I realized you asked if you "had" to buy an external HD. No, you don't HAVE to, I just like mine and think its a good idea for back up purposes, if nothing else. You must have something on there you want to keep or you would just delete some stuff. I don't know for sure but I think that a full hard drive makes your computer RUN SLOWER. Don't quote me on that, though. I am by no means an expert!! Heck, I can't even get my mouse and keyboard to work at the same time!!Have you run disk cleanup?  It should be run at least once a month, if not a lot more often.

Also, how big is your hard drive and how much free space do you have?thank you GUYS i am now trying run an disk cleanup every week

Solve : recover disk not working?

I have an emachines computer (T1840) with Windows XP on it I do not have anything on the hard drive I want to keep...when I power the computer up it is a black screen with nothing

I power it w. my recover disks a black screen and two options, the first of which was "Restore Windows XP" which I clicked enter. Then another window came up with this in the banner "Symantec Ghost 7.0.0.260 Copyright (C) 1998-2001 Symantec Corporation. All rights reserved".

Within this window was another window with the banner "Error" and finally inside this were the text "Single user version cannot do multiple loads" with an okay button. At the bottom of the page was R:\T1840.GHO I pressed enter and got a new error message "Cannot open GHOSTERR.TXT". Again I pressed enter and this got Application error 11000 "Invalid dump file. If problem persists, please CONTACT Symantec support center or contact symantec support".

I shut it all down with the disc still in and this time tried option 2-Boot to command prompt from CD-ROM. I pressed enter and the following came up. "files being verified" then this shows up A:\> and it just sets there and does nothing..

I have been TOLD to do a "clean install" of xp...The problem I have is that my xp was preloaded on my computer I have the serial key I just can't afford to buy a new copy of xp
any suggestionsYou know, I'm sure you don't want to hear this but I think every system user should own a copy of the installed OS. If I were you I'd just go out and purchase ONE.It sounds like the Ghost image file of XP is corrupt...
So at this point you have 2 options:

Order a replacement Recovery CD from the manuf....shipping charges may apply...

Borrow an XP CD for a clean install. The versions need to match...in other words if you had XPHome you need an XPHome CD ...Pro you need a Pro CD

Make sure they are Microsoft CD's ALSO...OEM CD's will NOT work.

This is perfectly legal to do...

You may also want to go online prior to this and collect all the neccessary Drivers for that machine...chipset drivers go 1st.Why do you keep posting your question in other people's threads? Solve : Word problem?

Answer»

Hello

I had a power cut yesterday which shut down my PC (Win XP).

The PC now takes a while to start up, but I can log-in to Windows and I can open, after a fashion, my software - EXCEPT for WORD.

When I try to open Word it tries to reinstall it. I then get a couple of error messages depending on what I am trying to do. If I go to 'Help and Support', I get the following:

The application or DLL C:\Windows\system32\hhctrl.ocx is not a valid Windows image.
Please check against against your installation diskette.

If I try to reinstall Word using the installation CD, I get:

Error 2330. Setup cannot get attributes for file C:\Documemts and Settings\All Users.Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Office. Verify that the file exists in your system and that you have sufficient permissions to update it.

Another error I get is this:

When trying to repair MS Word I get the following message: Error 1304. Verify you have
access to MSTore10.AW. There IS an MStore10 file (it's an Answer Wizard file).

Any help would be appreciated.

patio.Hello

I think that seems to have done it.

I ran the Recovery Console and get the following: CHKDSK found and fixed one or more errors on the volume. I then started Windows and double-clicked on Word to open it. It looked as if it wanted me to reinstall Word, but then brought to the fore a document (recovered) that I thought I might have lost as a consequence of the power switch-off.

I actually have TWO O/S (Pro and Home). I can't use the Recovery on the Pro edition, because I can't remember the admin password, but thaanks for all your help.

SteveGlad it seems to be sorted out. That's a good reason to buy a UPS.  Besides battery back in case of power outages they almost always have very good surge protection.

And you don't need a big expensive one for most average use, just one that will keep it running for 10-15 minutes.  That will keep it running for short power outages or allow you to shut down properly if it seems like the outage will be a longer one.

The first service is given below:

It may be POSSIBLE to WORK around the issue by delaying the start time of the App-V client service until the first user successfully logs in. Follow these steps in order to delay the start of the Application Virtualization Client Service:

STEP 1:
Using regedit, navigate to the key named "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run".
Remove the SoftGridTray value from this key. The SoftGridTray value will contain a path. For example:

SoftGridTray="C:\Program Files\Microsoft Application Virtualization Client\SFTTray.exe" /autostart

Step 2:
Open the "Services" control panel applet.
Display properties for the service CALLED "Application Virtualization Client".
Change the "Startup type" field from "Automatic" to "Manual".

Solve : Computer Powering Off Randomly...??

Answer»

Hi there,

I'm RUNNING a dell inspiron 600m with Windows XP.

My computer has been displaying this error MESSAGE when I boot up:
"The AC Power Adapter Type Cannot Be Determined. This will prevent optimal system performance."

This showed up for a while, then I bought a new AC adapter - just a regular ol' made in china adapter. Things WORKED fine for a while, then I start getting the error message again, but nothing else.

Tonight - randomly - the computer has shut down.  It's not at regular intervals either. If anything it seems to be if I move the computer.

do I need to purchase a new AC adapter - ONE that is official dell product?

Thank you in advance. This site is awesome!  Well, I had just finished the "welcome" post and was about to press the "post" button when the computer shut off again last night.

Found my old AC adapter and have been using it this morning with no shut off problems, but I still got that error when it powered up.  Maybe a new AC adapter is what I need?

I would still appreciate the advice.  Thanks!Hi,

In the center of your power adapter plug that goes into your computer, there is a little pin that your laptop uses to communicate with the power adapter. Somewhere, that has broken. If you still have your computer in warranty, email Dell, andthey will send you a replacement one.

If you don't GET it replaced, your computer will still run from the power adapter, but probably won't charge.

It wouldnt even work if I UNPLUGGED the card.  I proceeded to remove the card and do a force shut down by holding the power button.  I then stuck the card back in and let it boot with the card in but it wont boot if the cards in.  It will however boot just fine if the card is out.  No whenever I stick the card in, it freezes.  I have already tried updating the drivers and checking for ghost drivers in safe mode.  Everything looks fine.  There are no ? or x's in the device manager screen yet when i plug the card in the computer completely freezes.  please help, i need wireless. If you know anyone else with a laptop that has a pcmcia slot, I would try sticking it into their laptop and see if it yields the same results.  If it does the same thing, you probably have a bad unit.  If it doesn't...well, that'll make the troubleshooting steps a BIT different.  I have seen a bad WLAN cause freezes and BSOD's MANY times so that would be my first suspect.

Solve : Microsoft Ends win xp coverage??

Answer»

Ok So I tried to install xp on my tower when I recieved it but when installing SP2 I noticed the setup skiped one part. THe part were the music plays and It setsup the computer like admin name and to register with microsoft or not to turn auto updates on or off. SO I cleanned the hdd and installed SP3 and It worked But when I tried yesterday On my cousins Dell Inspiron laptop 1150 I skipped that part too. I just wanted to know did my disks turn bad or did microsoft end support?Did you use the same Win XP disc and same product key to install Windows on both computers? From Information Week.

In an unprecedented move, Microsoft has committed to providing support services for its soon to be retired Windows XP through 2014 -- a full 13 years after the operating system was ORIGINALLY released.

In a letter sent to customers this week, Microsoft SENIOR VP Bill Veghte said the software maker will provide security patches "and other critical updates" for Windows XP until April, 2014.

On how many computers are you installing XP with these disks? Are they burned or regular pressed install disks?
I have the original disks but so they wouldn't get damaged I copied them and used the copies. They are a little damaged maybe I should destroy these and make some new ones. I just don't want the originals to get damaged. The only time I've ever seen the "let's get started" prompts (firewall and stuff) skipped is with pirate copies of XP or slipstreamed versions with that feature purposely taken out.

a LEGIT XP install will never skip it under normal circumstances. Quote from: comda on May 30, 2010, 04:04:41 PM

They don't get damaged from being used, if you do it properly.

Solve : wireless 1394 connection problem?

Answer»

I am trying to connect to my wireless network and i get a message of TCP/IP not enabled;how do I enable it?Can you give you OS?
what is OS?Operating System, like XP.

Also, information about your router and wireless cards.  Information about your computer might also help.  The more information the better, although some of it may not be necessary, it's better to let the PEOPLE here sort out what is important and what's not.windows xp;
I connect through a wireless connection;I have linksys; What's the model number of your router? The OS is irrelevant...the setup procedures are the same from Win98 thru Win7...LINKSYS WIRELESS G 2.4GHZ WRT54G ROUTEROK, FIRST it's not a 1394 router but a 802.11g router.  Very different.

What's the model of your wireless cards? The 1394 was not the router but the name of the connection on my laptop:it is a 1394 net adapter;and when i try to repair the connection(i always connected to my router mentioned above but gave the computer to somebody and since i got it back can not connect)i get the message:following action can not be completed:TCP/IP is not enabled for this connection;Open Command Prompt; type ipconfig /all
Paste contents here.

This indicates you are connected to the router through a wireless connection.
You are not connected through your wired connection (the broadcon gigabit).I DID INSTALL A MEDIALINK CARD SO I CAN USE IT TILL I FIGURE OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE BUILT IN WIRELESS ..THE 1394 Quote from: gracika on May 30, 2010, 06:11:22 PM

I see your caps-lock is now broken, too.
Are you saying you have 2 wireless cards?
What is make & model of laptop?
1394 is not wireless, it's the Firewire port on the laptop.

Solve : Thumbs no show!?

Answer»

Hello folks,

Whenever I download/copy a graphic file to a directory, I get a
graphical thumbnail of that file in that directory.  After a while,
I notice that some of those thumbnails turn generic and there is
no tiny picture of that file showing .  Why does this happen and
how can I get the small picture showing again?

Thank you

A separate folder in another directory...

zilooHi,

To work around this problem, add the ShellEx keys and the corresponding VALUES for the image files to the Windows Registry. To do this, follow these steps.

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may REQUIRE you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

1). Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.

2). In Registry Editor, expand the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes

3). Click .gif.

4). On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.

5). In the New Key #1 box, type ShellEx, and then press ENTER.

6). On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.

7). In the New Key #1 box, type the following:
          {BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
Note Include the braces in the above key name.

Note The above key name contains zeros, and not the letter O.

. Press ENTER.

9). In the right pane, right-click Default, and then click Modify on the shortcut menu.

10). In the Value data box, type the following:
           {7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}
Note Include the braces in the above value.

Note The above value contains zeros, and not the letter O.

11). Click OK.

12). In the folder list, click .jpeg.

13). Follow steps 5 through 12 to add the same keys and value to the .jpeg registry key.

14). In the folder list, click .jpg.

15). Follow steps 5 through 12 to add the same keys and value to the .jpgregistry key.

16). Quit Registry Editor, and then RESTART the computer.Hi,
