Solve : Can't Open 'Services' in Administrative Tools?

Answer»

When I try to open Services, a message pops up.

It reads:

mmc.exe - Unable to LOCATE Component

'This application has failed to start because MröD .dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.'

Anyone know how to reinstall the application? I don't even know what app to re-install ;(

HELP WANTED NEEDED.1) Do a full scan of your system with both your anti virus utility and MalwareBytes
2) If no malware is detected, you can either RUN sfc /scannow or do a repair install. For either OPERATION you need your XP CD. If you need further instructions on how to proceed just post back and we'll walk you through it.Hi,

Have you tried running the Microsoft MANAGEMENT CONSOLE from the "Run" dialogue or from the Command Prompt? If that works, then you'll be able to open any Microsoft Common Console Document (in the System32 folder) from within it. If you cannot even start MMC, well, let's cross that bridge if we ever come to it. Regards.

Solve : Missing Microsoft office files?

Answer»

Hello. Every time when i open my internet explorer browser, new tab on explorer, BOOT my COMPUTER, open any drives I get an error first saying this:

and then when i click 'ok' another error pops up and quickly disappears. It says ''Please wait while windows configures Microsoft Groove GUI''. This error comes up every time I boot my PC.

Some days ago I ran a software called 'jv16' which mistakenly deleted some windows system and office files. How to get rid of this error popping up every time?

ThanksTry doing a FULL uninstall of microsoft office. And then reninstall it. If this doesnt work try visitng the microsoft forums.Hi,

have seen other references to this error and a suggestion that you may
want to completely uninstall and re-install Office, as the installer may be
hung up. One poster had to completely remove Office manually, using these
instructions:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218
I don't want to uninstall my office. Is there no other way out to repair it by just putting in the missing files? Cannot I repair this error without uninstalling and reinstalling microsoft office?

you have snipping tool on xp?jv16 is most likely the culprit here.

Re-install that component of Office that the error message refers to.

If jv16 removed Office documents and/or system files you may have to do a Repair Install. Quote from: patio on June 01, 2010, 06:21:35 AM

jv16 is most likely the culprit here.

Agreed. You can try restoring the files from jv16's backup if you chose to backup the files before deleting them.Isn't jv16 called Power Tools or something ? ?

I do remember it's not a tool for the faint of HEART though.... Quote from: patio on June 01, 2010, 07:02:00 AM

I do remember it's not a tool for the faint of heart though....
Yes, jv16 Power Tools. It's a fairly powerful utility but it does offer full backup/restore protection for deleted files. That's if you're smart enough to turn it on before you let it make any changes... Quote from: patio on June 01, 2010, 07:35:51 AM
That's if you're smart enough to turn it on before you let it make any changes...
Well, yeah - there is that . Actually it will not let you delete anything without first asking if you want to create a backup. I used to be a beta tester for them.Gotcha...Thanx for the info.Sighs!! unfortunately I was not smart enough to create a backup for the file cleaner of jv16. I merely thought this tool to be as same as Ccleaner. This error seems to me related to Microsoft Groove GUI missing files. Can you give a tutorial regarding how to reinstall/repair a single office component i.e Microsoft Groove? Thanks.Found This...Or you can just do a repair of MS Office. INSERT the Office disc and you'll be asked if you want to repair the existing installation.

I cant download anything
firefox says its running when its not, IV looked in task manager and tried resetting

i can't do a system restore because it says system restore is suspended due to lack of disk space, iv done disk cleanup but it isn't working for some reason.
helppppppppp
thnx Hi,

Try Uninstalling firefox and reinstall firefox and check if it WORK.
Also try to open the same page using Internet explorer. It seems some AddOns are not working properly.
I would also like to know when was it working fine before? How about the normal webpages?
yeah i can't re-intall anything. I am using internet explorer and thats what I cna't download off. It was working up untill a few days ago on firefox and IE but then my partner said he got rid of some files and things he thought were corrupt (he doesnt know much either\0 and since then I have had all these problemsWhat error do you get? What exactly happens when you try to down load?

but then my partner said he got rid of some files and things he thought were corrupt (he doesnt know much either\0 and since then I have had all these problems

Should I state the obvious???Go for it...Whats the obvious?
Well, if you don't know much about computers, like you stated about your partner and yourself, then don't delete files that you 'think' you don't need or 'think' are corrupt.

Seems like that since your partner 'got rid of' these files that you've had the problem. He has deleted important files which your computer needs to run smoothly!! And since you dont know what they are this MAKES the whole job of sorting this out alot harder!

Are the files he deleted still in the Recycle Bin, if so you can restore them!

Has your partner ANY idea of the names of the files he got rid of, as this will help

( An up-to-date Anti-virus scan will tell you of any files that are corrupt and remove them for you. Guess work can make a system go from working to a nightmare very quickly)

TIP OF THE DAY : Dont let your partner touch the computer
no the recycle bin is empty.
I know he shouldn't touch computers, however getting through to him is like getting blood from a stone hahaha
he doesn't have a clue wht and he did and even if he did he wouldn't admit it due to the fact it would mean admitting i was right I may just have to admit defeat and save up some pennies to buy a new one?
Thanks for your help
Did your computer come with a Windows CD, if so, then you can just re-install windows from the CD

What make and model is it?

Don't think about buying a new one, we have not finished helping you yet yeah i have the windows cd but i dont have the product code, im not sure of the make and model either lol as someone built it for us and i cant find anything on it that says that lol
Isn't the serial number on the CD??wouldn't the windows file protection prevent the deletion of main files for windows to run ? Quote from: blackrainbow on June 02, 2010, 03:27:37 AM
wouldn't the windows file protection prevent the deletion of main files for windows to run ?

Solve : EVDO (bsnl wirless connection) break ups frequently in xp?

Answer»

I am using EVDO (bsnl wireless connection) and my Operating system is WINDOWS Xp with service pack 2,the problem i am facing is my internet connection breaks every 10minutes.but the device is working properly in another systems with out any problem for hours Hi,

For your question, I'll assume you are using the EVDO USB modem.
Open the software provided with the modem. The one which has a red coloured icon in the notification area - if you are connected.
Double CLICK on that icon. Or you can always open it from Start>All Programmes.
Go to Settings>Options>Standby/Hibernate.
Click the radio button "Prevent Standby/Hibernate". By default, standby/hibernate is enabled.

I guess it solves your problem. If not, contact customer care.

If your DOWNLOADS break in between, I'd suggest you USE a download manager. Also, don't use Internet Explorer. Its very slow & the least secure Internet Browser.
I'd RECOMMEND you use Google Chrome, its the fastest (can only be installed live, connected), or Mozilla Firefox, or Opera.
Use Internet Explorer only for those websites which are not compatible & won't open properly with the above mentioned browsers.

Solve : Crash on Startup problem?

Answer»

When I start my desk Top PC with XP(pro), it crashes before the "WINOWS XP" screen comes up and the PC restarts

This cycle continues until I switch off at the 13A socket
If I do not remove the plug and restart the "crashing cycle" recommences
If I remove the 13A Plug from the socket, and restart it gets to the point where you can select "START WINDOWS NORMALLY"
and this works ---SOMETIMES--- If it doesnt I have just restart after unplugging the13a plug.
But now things have got worse and on two occasions I have had "blue screens" which suggest Memory, or Display problems
I have discovered "conflicts" described below but I dont know how to correct them

You are correct. Something is wrong with the Graphics Controller and/or its drivers. Reinstall them. Thanks for your reply.
I TRIED to reinstall the drivers from the cd but could not do it.
To be honest I have done so much I can't remember it all, but I've had a multitude of "Blue screens" and eventually re-formated the hard drive, which wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be, only to FIND the same "conflicts", and now, when the PC starts it gets as far as the windows screen and then the screen goes black. I HAVE MANAGED TO GET Started in "Safe Mode With Networking" and I have downloaded service pack3, but now cant get updates from the Ms Update site
Looks to me like a replacement Video card is required, together with some luck
Anyway, thanks again for your help--- It would be nice to talk, if you send me your number I'd like to give you a ring when my VOIP phone is working Hi,

Solve : What's this "Disable Visual Themes" in the properties??

Answer»

Hello There!

Please refer to the attached screenshot & help decipher the meaning & effect when this option is checked.

"Disable Visual Themes"...what can it CAUSE & prevent when checked?

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]This looks like the properties to a shortcut or program. Disabling visual themes stops visual themes from altering the window of the associated program. Some older programs or even newer programs which incorporate their own visual themes won't work PROPERLY with XP's visual theme.Hi Quaxo!

But how can a user make a decision in advance that "Visual Theme" is to be disabled or else!?

As far as screenshot goes, this reflects properties of an EXECUTABLE file.In most cases it isn't necessary and shouldn't be enabled unless a program is appears to be having problems with Windows desktop themes.

When it is not enabled, if you aren't experiencing problems, then don't change it.Also, it probably won't make MUCH of a difference, since you are USING the classic theme anyway. although it's more likely to cause problems, since it also enabled a couple of graphic and common dialog related compatibility shims. Thanks to both Quaxo & BC!(Wish if I had "Thumbs up" icon to choose for!?)

Solve : Paging File size?

Answer»

Hello FOLKS,

Windows xp keeps telling me that the total "paging File "
size for all my drives is 0 MB, and I proceed to:

Control Panel-> System-> Advanced-> Performance->
Setting-> Advanced-> Change-> Custom

Virtual memory

Initial size: 1536 MB
Maximum size: 3072 MB

and I click on the "Set" button, and then "Apply" and
Windows xp restarts for the change to take effect.

However, Windows stops right before the last stage
when all the icons should show up on the screen, and
the only way I can get to the final stage is to do a
Ctrl-Alt-Del, and Windows suddenly wakes up and
I get all the icons on the screen. However, the paging file
size has remained 0 !!! What is going on?

Thank you

zilooCan you tell us about your hardware? How much RAM do you have and are you running 32 or 64 bit windows XP?

What happens if you TRY to set it as "Windows Managed"?Thank you for your responses!

I have about 1 gig Ram on my P4 system.
When I set it as "system managed size", the same
routine happens: reboot; the blue screen
shows up with "WELCOME" sign and HD activity for
personal settings; after the HD activity stops, the
cursor is active, but the next screen with icons
doesn't show up and I have to do a Ctrl-Alt-Del to
get to the final stage.

Next time that I reboot the system, I get a message
that "because of a PROBLEM with paging file configuration
in my last session, there has not been a paging file set
for the virtual memory and window has established an
arbitrary paging file on its own.

ziloo
How long ago did this start?

Did you install any software recently?

How much free space do you have on your hard drive?

Is the swap file on the same disk or partition that windows is?

Have you tried a system restore yet?Any recent changes (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)? The problem existed when I got the system from a friend.
I did a windows repair and no change to the problem.
I have about 20 gig free space on my C: partition.
I have file swap area set for both C: and D: partitions.

Somebody had told me about a pagefile.sys file that might be
corrupted, but I don't seem to find any such file on my system!

zilooWhat is the Total size of C: ? ?
What method did you use for a Repair Install ? ?
Was an official XP CD used or a Sharpie version ? ? Quote from: patio on June 06, 2010, 09:45:55 AM

What method did you use for a Repair Install ? ?

Hello Patio,

After reading your comments, I went ahead and reinstalled
the windows from scratch, and this time everything went as
it was supposed to and the paging file size was set correctly!
Thank you so very much, and thanks to everybody else with
their informative comments.

ziloo Good News...

For reference down the road there is a non-destructive way to do this...your data and apps stay intact.

Repair Install of XP

Bookmark it...and print out a reference copy...

Kudos to Michael Stevens...Yes exactly..................that is what I did: installing the
new windows in place of the previous one without
altering the set up (non-destructive).

Solve : everything went black?

Answer»

Hi
I did a malwarebytes anti-malware scan and then restarted my computer. Now after restarting, i got the motherboard page and then everything went black. I tried restarting but I get the same thing. Can anybody please help me.
I am usually very careful. First, the Malwarebytes scan is almost certainly not related to the fact your system will not start. If I remember correctly you were having problems before running the scan - you even disabled some services with msconfig.

What EXACTLY happens and what EXACTLY do you see when you try to boot the system?I am very careful when I go in msconfig. The only place I go there is in startup. I was told that if my computer was slow to go in there and remove the program that will start at startup and everything is usually fine.

When I start my computer, the laptop comes on and then I get the motherboard screen, then another scrreen telling me something about pimary and secondary master not found and then everything goes black.

I checked and if I press delete at startup it brings me to the setup screen. Not sure how you guys call that. I am not very good in all the computer talk. do you think i have a chance. I have a small business and all my stuff is on this. The system files needed to run Windows are most likely trashed...
That or the DRIVE itself has died judging by the message it's not being detected in the BIOS...

2 alternatives:
1 Get a laptop 2.5" to IDE connector for about 8 bucks:

Available at any PC store...this will enable you to remove the drive and hook it up to any WORKING Desktop machine to attempt to retrieve your important data...

2) Buy an external USB laptop drive enclosure to attempt the same...about 20 - 25 Bucks. When i press f8 i get the following message.
Please select boot device

1st floppy disk
sm-lite-on combo ltc-48161h
pm-maxtor 6y080lo

I also kept a cd that another computer tech has gave to my son. its called
USBC 4 WINDOWS

Can this help in any way.The UBCD boot CD can wind up wiping all your data if not USED properly...It contains some very powerful TOOLS...

Select the Maxtor as 1st boot device...press F10 to "save changes and Exit" and hit Enter...

Other than trying that you should consider my suggestions above if in fact your data is that important to you.

Recovery should be priority #1...screwing around to attempt to fix it should come afterwards...http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Search.aspx?language=en-CA&keywords=external+usb+laptop+drive&pagenum=0

Is this what I need. I have to go shopping
This:

Here...

Or This:
Here

The link you posted is an external laptop drive...you don't need 1 right now.....

Either of these will be available at any PC store...brand is not too important.I live in a small town and the only thing we have here is the Source. It was Radio Shack before. So I tried to find the item you posted with no luck. You said I dont need the extenal drive now but will it do the job you want me to do. I was thinking of buying one anyway. If i can get all my data believe me, I will be doing my back up many many times. The store is open for another 2 hours if you say the external usb that I posted may do the job, i am in my car and at the store. Thanks for your helpo.k I went and bout verbatim external hard drive usb 2.0 (500gb). That is all they have.

Solve : Highlighting/deleting/copying problem?

Answer»

Hello,

Sorry, I can't apply a specific subject to these problems. I have lumped them into one help request though because I believe that they must be all caused by the same gremlin?
The following applies to all the problems. They only happen the very first time I attempt to do certain actions on the displayed page. When I try the same again on the same page the problem does not happen and the required result is achieved. I am running Windows XP and can find no INFECTIONS on my PC. I can run AVG, Ad-Aware, Spybot and Malwarebytes one after the other and none of them find any infection.

Problem 1. If I highlight a document in a folder list and press shift/delete to delete it immediately without going through the recycle bin, that file, plus all the files below it in the list are highlighted and I am asked if I wish to delete all those files. So I click "No" and highlight the same file again and shift/delete deletes it only. If I go to a new folder, whatever, the problem will again repeat as before.

Problem 2. If I highlight some text I wish to delete and type over, when I start typing the text is not deleted and my typing COMMENCES after that text. Again, try a second time on that same page (including the same text) and the text is deleted as required. Go to a new page and the problem is repeated.

Problem 3. I might try and copy some text by highlighting it and pressing Control/C. Page starts to shimmer badly and gives the impression of scrolling continuously and very fast. Pressing "Control" a few times takes things back to normal and I can then highlight and press control/c to copy.

Problem 4. I have a spreadsheet open and wish to ENTER text into an empty cell. I click on the cell and start typing. The text is not entered in the cell, but at the end of whatever text is in the cell at the top of the page. Having deleted the surplus text from that cell I can then enter text in the required cell with no problem. As long as I stay in that document I can enter text in any cell I wish, but opening another spreadsheet means the same problem OCCURS again.

Does anyone know the answer to this?
Regards,
BarrySorry all,

I firmly believed I had fully uninstalled the programs that I considered might be causing my problem, but I just found a remnant of Sophos AntiRootKit on my PC. I got rid of that and all my problems have disappeared. Sorry once again.

BarryGlad we could help.

Solve : Messed up Boot.ini?

Answer»

Just built a new box and wanted to MOVE my SATA hard drives to the new box and keep my XP installation intact. Usually I do the repair installation through XP setup and have no problems, but was having trouble with that. I READ somewhere that initiating a XP Upgrade on the old box and continuing it on the new box should make the process easier (not true). So I initiated the upgrade and when rebooting, turned machine off and MOVED hardware over to new box. Had some issues with the new box that were unrelated but was finally able to boot. Now the problem I had was I had two entries in the boot menu when booting from my C: drive. One was Windows XP Pro and the other was Windows XP Pro Setup. When I chose the setup, to try to continue the upgrade installation, it freezes. When trying to do a repair installation (not recovery console), it does not detect my previous Windows installation.

In any case, I was able to boot into XP using the fix_hdc in UBCD4win. I should have just stopped there, but I wanted to get RID of the Windows XP Setup load identifier, so I went ahead and tried to rebuild Boot.ini. That did not remove the Windows XP setup entry, but now I can't boot into XP because I keep getting the error that HAL.dll is missing or corrupt. Tried replacing HAL.dll with the dll on the disk, but was still getting that error. Did some research and the HAL.DLL error is due to a corrupt Boot.ini. So now, I need to get back to where I was, specifically, get rid of the HAL.DLL error and boot into XP. I tried rebuilding Boot.ini so many times now, I have like 8 different load identifiers and don't know how to get rid of them. HELP

ATI Radeon HD 4670
CoolerMaster Storm Scout Case

Thanks! To be honest, I'm having trouble following everything you did (not to mention WHY). But just boot to the Recovery Console and run the following two commands:

Fixmbr

and

FixbootRepair Install of XP

Very early on in the setup process there will be a prompt at the bottom of the screen stating "Press F6 to install additional Drivers"...insert your MBoard Driver CD and it will extract and install the neccessary SATA Drivers...
Continue on with the Setup and you should be good to go...Thanks for the response.

I tried fixmbr and fixboot and am still getting the HAL.dll error. I am using a slipstreamed XP disc that has sp3, and windows setup sees my hard drives, but it doesn't detect any current Windows installations. it takes me right to the select partition screen.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3144771.But just boot to the Recovery Console.

2.Delete the Boot.ini file.

3.Type Bootcfg/rebuild command.

4.Then enter the fix boot cmd.

5.Reboot the computer.

Solve : Bluescreen alot. About Bios and now its kernal thread terminated by mutex?

Answer»

I get the Bluescreen alot. About Bios , IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and now its kernal thread terminated by mutex. I don't know what else to do. I read another thread about the same problem but it was about a laptop and now solution had been found it.

I have a Windows XP 2002 Service pack:3
Intel, Pentium 4 cpu 3.00GHz
3.oo GHZ 1.93 GB of RAM.

I put all my music and photos, DOCUMENTS & files on an external hard drive 500G so that my operating system is using only using 29.9 GB and 44.4 GB free SPACE.

I did the Bsod.txt report which is here:

Thank you,
RobertHi,

If you receive this error message, follow these steps to resolve the issue:
Restart the computer and see if you receive an option to revert back to a previous operating system. Choose this option if it is displayed. If you do not receive the option to revert to a previous operating system, skip to step 3.

When your computer starts Windows 98 or Windows Me, uninstall any antivirus software and boot manager software (such as Roxio GoBack), and then "clean boot" your computer by using the information in one of the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:
267288 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/267288/EN-US/ ) How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows Millennium Edition
192926 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/192926/EN-US/ ) How to Perform Clean-Boot Troubleshooting for Windows 98
After your computer starts in the "clean boot" environment, try to upgrade to Windows XP again. If the upgrade procedure does not work and you receive the same error message, the problem may be a hardware problem.

Remove any unnecessary hardware from the computer. Disconnect any Universal Serial Bus (USB) devices and printers, and remove the network adapter, sound card, serial adapters, and so on.
If you continue to receive this error message, you may NEED to flash the BIOS on the computer's motherboard. Refer to the manufacturer of your computer or the Web site for the motherboard for information about how to do this.Ignore the above post.

That error message typically indicates bad, corrupt or conflicting drivers. Download and install the current drivers for all of your hardware (get them from the OEM web sites, not from Microsoft Update). Also check for a bios flash.

Solve : That thing keeps showing up at the beginning!?

Answer»

Computer Specs:

-Windows XP SP2 2002
-AMD Athlon 64 Processor
-384 MB of RAM (it was supposed to be 512 but thats what it says)
-I have one have drive, split in two (dont know how to say it)
-Im currently using Kaspersky Antivirus

It all started because my pc started crashing with small amounts of work , it worried me cause i dont have many files, and i havent installed a LOT of software. That's why i wanted to defrag both C: and E:, defragmented C and when i tried to do the other one a message popped up, it was someting like this:
"The disk defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is programmed to be executed on volume E:
Run Chkdsk /f"

And so i did, when chkdsk window CAME up it asked me if i wanted to run chkdsk next time i turn on my computer, i said yes because i thought that after that i would be able to run the defragmenter . But now everytime i start windows this thing similar to old scandisk comes up and starts looking for errors in my hard drive . I already went to chkdsk /f and told it to stop....it wont. Keeps coming up, and the defragmenter wont defrag the unit because the same message keeps showing up .... whats wrong?Hard drive may be failing. When chkdsk runs, does it ever finish?

Computer Specs:
-384 MB of RAM (it was supposed to be 512 but thats what it says)
-I have one have drive, split in two (dont know how to say it)

- 384 RAM - You are using 'onboard' video that uses 128 MB of system RAM. The RAM that is being used by the video won't show up because the system can't use it. But, the computer has 512 MB of physical RAM - 128 + 384 = 512.

- One physical drive; two logical drives.

Won't HELP your problem, but - FYI!

Yes, it always finishes.... Quote from: melitica on June 28, 2008, 09:16:13 PM

Hello Melitica. There is an article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base that concerns the symptoms you experience.

Chkdsk Runs Each Time That You Start Your Computer

Read the article and follow the instructions given. See if they help or not. Also, download the attachment and extract the file within it. Double-click on the extracted file and answer Yes to the following prompt. You will receive a confirmation dialog box. Acknowledge the prompt by clicking OK and reboot the computer. See if the Checkdisk still runs on every boot or not. LET us know how it goes. Good Luck.

Solve : freeing all but Windows XP from laptop?

Answer»

I would like to GIVE my laptop to my granddaughter but do not know how to remove everything from the laptop that is connected to my home COMPUTER without compromising either.Do you want to remove all the Programs/SOFTWARE or Data (like pictures, documents, videos, ect...)

With Programs and Software, try looking in START --> Control Panel --> Add and Remove Programs.
From there you can uninstall programs.
With all your Data, a SHIFT + Delete will do.you could do a clean install of windows if you got the original disks too..... bring the laptop back to brand new condition almost except for the battery life will still be the same and not like when you first bought it... however certain BACKGROUND processes/programs that are removed in a clean install could and may increase battery life due to less processing taking place.

Solve : Mouse freezes during windows installation?

Answer»

During windows installation, my mouse and keyboard aren't recognised/usable. I can use my keyboard and I can see my mouses light flashing on, but as soon as the installation starts the mouse light flashes off and the keyboard can't be used.

My problem is that a popup saying that my NVIDIA gefroce 8800gts driver hasn't passed windows verification. It asks me if i want to continue yes/no, but I am unable to move my mouse to click yes.

Both the mouse and keyboard are USB and it is windows XP home edition

Any help is appreciated Hello Chris. I think you might find something useful in here.

A Bluetooth keyboard or mouse does not work when you START Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005

Does it apply to you or do you have some different problems? Let us know as soon as possible and we will try to guide you further. Good Luck.

-- GokuNope, that doesn't apply to me as i'm using a USB mouse/keyboard and not bluetooth. Thanks anyway Ok, then I think this one does apply to your problem as far as I know.

Keyboard and Mouse Stop Responding When You Upgrade to Windows XP

Also, try using different a Keyboard and Mouse to see if they too stop responding or not. If they do, then it is most probably a hardware conflict. Try the instructions provided in the above link and see if they help or not. Good Luck.

-- Gokuwell that is my problem... but my mouse/keyboard aren't plugged into PS/2. Just USB...

And i'm unsure as to how i would update the bio or the intellipoint... as I am halfway through the installation and i can't boot it in safe modeWell, your best bet would be to borrow a mouse and keyboard to complete the installation. This way you will at least be not left HANGING in between. Complete the installation as soon as possible with another mouse and keyboard or REVERT back to a previous installation of Windows. An operable system will be far much more easier to help with than one that is in the GREY area in the between.

After you are done with it, I will give you a link through which you can perform a BIOS upgrade. Remember, the upgrade will cost you something but will leave you with a more enriched computing experience. So decide what you want to do and state so in your next post. I will guide you from there on accordingly. Good Luck.

-- GokuI've tried with a different mouse, to no effect... How would I go about reverting to a previous installation of windows? If you are halfway through an installation, then I don't think you will be able to revert back to a previous installation for now. I am still posting the link in case you need it later.

How to uninstall Windows XP and revert to a previous operating system

So for now, the only option available to you is a BIOS upgrade. However, I am not sure if that too will work or not as they need the APPROPRIATE information from the computer and you cannot provide it in your present condition. What Operating System did the computer previously have?

-- GokuI forgot to say that it was a reinstall of windows*Well, then how did you install the previous copy? Can you try some other mouse and keyboard that does not use a USB port. Also, have you tried reinstating the installation?

-- GokuIt was that long ago that I can't remember how I installed XP before. I don't remember having the same problem though. The only type of mouse/keyboard I have access to right now is USB. What do you mean by reinstating? Quote from: chrisw91 on July 06, 2008, 12:12:27 AM

Does your motherboard have on board video? If so, I would take it out and install the drivers after the O.S. has loaded.
I have an asus p5nd2 motherboard.. doesn't have onboard videoHello again Chris. By reinstating the installation, I mean to restart the installation afresh. Are you repairing the existing installation of Windows or did you start by formatting your hard drive?

Solve : restoring my laptop to factory settings?

Answer»

i have recently bought a toshiba satellite pro m40 laptop it is full of virusses and says it has a spyware infection i want to erase every thing on the computer and dont need to keep any data what is the easist way to do this i dont have any discs with the computer and it run with windows xp home edition i do have a product key. can anyone help. There are three ways to handle this PARTICULAR problem.

  • You can wait for a Malware Specialist to help you remove the infections on the computer.
  • You can inspect your computer to see if the manufacturer provided a recovery partition to RESTORE your computer to its FACTORY settings. You can use this partition to reformat your drive and put everything BACK...as if it was just purchased.
  • You can contact the manufacturer and purchase system recovery software at a very reasonable price to restore your computer to its factory settings.

Do you know if there's a recovery partition installed...or a program installed by the manufacturer which will ALLOW you to recover the system?

Solve : Restore problem?

Answer» RESTORE problem
I created a restore point on my computer today before downloading a reminder program called "ELEPHANT" from Source Forge. I could not get the download to run and tried to use system restore. On TWO occasions the computer restarted shortly after the system restore utility started. I then got a message that the computer had recovered from a serious fault.
When the computer restarted I was told that the system restore point could not be created. Followed by messages from Spybot that registry CHANGES were being requested:
KernelFaultCheck % system root% \ System 32 \ dumpprep 0-k
And: value deleted C/windows \ System \ 32 \ restore rstrui. exe-i.

I told Spybot to allow both these changes. Should I have done so?
I then restarted in safe mode and was ABLE to restore to the pre-Elephant system restore point.
Can anyone please tell me what was the cause of this problem and what I should do if anything?

I have no explanation, but if everything works fine, I'd forget about the incident.thanks for your trouble. No trouble

Solve : Windows XP Sp2 3drivers gone?

Answer»

Hi guys, I haven't been here for a while because you fixed me up so well last time; thanks again. I have a Presario SR1911x, Athilon 64 proc.64, 512 mem. 200gb. After installing avg 8 I started having apps. that wouldn't, had to uninstall and reinstall IE7, lost 3 drivers. One was my dvd driver and I had a few files and pics that weren't backed up. I was able to move all my personal files to a flash drive so all is not lost. I am trying to stay away from the recovery console. I am unable to make a recovery disc because of no driver. My question is- is there a way to use a flash drive instead of a dvd to make an install disc. If not I will have to order one from HP, or use the console. Any information will be greatly appreciated. After I uninstalled avg8 none of my spyware WORKED, tray app is spotty. I had run spyware and VIRUS full scans just before installing avg8 and was all clear. I can still get on line so there is no big hurry. I would suggest that everyone have a backup browser for times like these. I like FlashPeak Slim Browser. Thanks guys.yes it is possible.

see this link for full details.
http://www.bootdisk.com/pendrive.htmWindows XP doesn't NEED any special driver for DVD drive.
I'm not sure from your post, what is actually NOT working on your COMPUTER?Hey Broni, it started out with no sound; no device driver. I have all the drivers downloaded in a file from the last sound problem I had caused by a windows update. I have tried to install the drivers several times including safe MODE and all I can get is installation failed, access denied, code 28, code32. I thought these drivers in the file might have been corrupted so I redownloaded drivers from HP and got the same results. I contacted HP and was told to use to use system recovery. My pc will not acknowledge that there is a disk in the drive so I can't make a recovery disk. I was able to save my personal files to a flash drive. Missing drivers are Realtek hd audio, TSSTCorp CD/DVD Ts H552L, Audio device on HD audio bus. Thank you for your time. Quote

I contacted HP and was told to use to use system recovery.
HP is probably thinking, that they are the only people on entire planet, who know about system recovery. This is just ridiculous.
BTW, normally, HP should send you those disks for free. Call them back. No matter what happens, it's a good idea to have them.

At the meantime...
Did you uninstall current audio driver (working, or not) before trying to install new one.
When you put, say music CD into the drive, is the drive listed in Windows Explorer, and can you see files on CD?
Can you hear CD spinning?
If you can see files, when double click on any file, does any music player open? Also you can right clik the drive in Control Panel/System/Device Manager and select remove/uninstall and re-boot...
Windows will automatically re-install the device.

But i highly suggest you follow Broni's advice above.....Hi Patio, I've already tried that, access denied ect. I have learned from experience to follow Broni's advise and it usually works very well. Thanks for your input. Also I would like to say that I have a new respect for the people that post on this forum. So many other places contain post from people who just want a quick fix without ever finding the cause of the problem; nor accepting responsibility for their problem. The people who posy here seem to want to know what caused the problem and how to insure that it won't happen again; taking responsibility for and with their own actions. I really appreciate all of you who help. Thank you for your responsibility and your integrity. I hope that everyone has a great holiday. We're glad to help, whenever we can hey roy48 pay well attention to any of broni instructions. Also Ive been thinking that you might need to first check for the mainboard drivers for an update. Patience is a great key for solutions so enjoy the summer and WAIT for more instructions.

Solve : Used computer?

Answer»

I bought a friends computer a few days ago. It has WinXP on it. The problem was that he had so much crap on it that I did not want, and also when he was online sometimes it would just kick him off. I DECIDED to re-install WinXP ONTO the computer. After installation, at the screen to put your name and password in so you can use your comp. it had his name and I DONT know his password. I thought that re-installing WinXP would wipe everything about him and just give me a fresh new WinXP to put my things on. I guess the question is how do wipe my computer and put my WinXP back on thier so that I am the owner and not him, and or how to bypass his password and how to make me the admin. and take him off? Can't you ask your friend for the password?Boot to Windows CD. Remove all partitions, format, and THEN install Windows.

Good question....LOLWhen you were uninstalling, if you had a cd, it would ask you for a NTFS quick format do not do that ONE. Do the NTFS full format or whatever. Also, not FAT32

If the recovery is on the hdd, you need to check that is is on destructive recovery, which means it will destroy all of the information on the computer.

Solve : Excel Assistance?

Answer»

I have a SPREADSHEET I am working on.
1 column has 16,789 names. 2ND 2,000. With almost 17,000 names I cant do it manually
I need to cross reference the names that are in column 1 with the names in column 2.

So I need to line up the duplicate names between the two colums

Ex. The list looks like this
Column 1 \ Column 2

jane Doe \ Richard Doe
Marcus doe \ Mark Doe
Shane doe \ Jane Doe
John doe \ Patricia Doe
Mary Doe \ Marcus Doe
Patricia Doe \ Eric Doe

I need it to look this this

Column 1 \ Column 2

Jane Doe \ Jane Doe
Marcus Doe \ Marcus Doe
Patricia Doe \ Patricia Doe
Mary Doe \ Richard Doe
Shane Doe \ Eric Doe
John Doe \ Mark Doe

HELP!
Has it really got all those people called Doe?
Please confirm this POINT. Do you want to re-arrange the values in column 2 to that the 2,000 names in it are moved to the cell to the right of the corresponding cell in column 1? In other words, column 2 would have blank rows between most names, while column 1 has no blank rows between names, right?

Does your version of OFFICE have Access, the database? If so, I believe it would work better for what you're trying to do. Hi soybean,

As I understand you want to verify if the names in column is same as in another.

If you are using Microsoft Office, then follow the below procedure:
=IF(A2=B2,"Yes","No")

If you are using OPEN Office 3.2 then follow the below procedure:
=IF(A3=B3;"Yes";"No")
You can customize it according to your need and comfort.
This will display you "Yes" if the names are same and "No" if the names are different.

Hope this helps you.

but for the last few days when my computer goes into standby, the monitor goes black and what not, but the fans are still going and i can hear the CPU RUNNING. the power button turns off completely along with the monitor....the monitor/power button turns back on when i click the mouse.

i tried fooling around with the Display properties>power option properties...as of right now the options are set to:

Power Schemes: Home/Office Desk
Turn off monitor: After 20 mins
Turn off Hard Disks: Never
System Stand by: After 20 mins

i do not have hibernation enabled.

so did i somehow turn a setting on/off somewhere?

Have you checked all th epower settings in the BIOS > >i checked the power settings, its been a few days and still nothing.I wonder if a BIOS update might help

Alan <>< If it's a laptop the fans may be running until the machine is cooled off.
Or you may have a background program running such as an Anti virus scan...Hi I had exactly the same problem, the Monitor wouldn't wake up and it was driving me nuts!

A 'Computer Expert' told me I needed to buy my a new monitor and or a new video card but I fortunately kept the first monitor that I ever bought and also had a spare video card from an old computer.

It still didn't make any difference as the monitor dropped back to standby every time and I couldn't even get into the bios.

It got to the stage when I was thinking there may be a fault on the Motherboard as I had left the computer plugged in during a lightning strike and contemplated buying a WHOLE new system.

I thought I had tried every trick in the book and almost gave up hope but having checked every connection on every thing plugged in and swapped different pieces of hardware I suddenly found the solution.

A faulty plug on my keyboard extension!!!!!!

As SOON as I plugged the keyboard back in without the extension WIRE, everything just worked perfectly after that.

Also before all this happened I noticed that the colours on my monitor had a blue tinge but after sorting the keyboard out this annoying problem went away.

Hope this helps

Solve : Runtime error repeatedly when opening programs?

Answer»

The problem seems to have started after loading sp3
HP Pavilion zd8000 Pentium 4 3.2 G Htz. Windows xp pro was sp2 now sp3
  80 G HARDDRIVE 40G free
Typical error :- Runtime error
                           Do you wish to debug
                           Line : 7 ( and other various numbers )
                           Error : in loading DLL
Clicking the "yes" key 2 or3 times clears the box, sometimes desktop icons GO to white and gradually come on to colour again, this also happens sometimes when closing a folder.

When restarting desktop goes to 640x480 (or similar) before going to my selected Resolution 1280x768

AVG 8 free running updated daily. windows firewall on, automatic update on When exactly does runtime error pop up? Whiloe using specific program?
As for video problem....did you try to reinstall video drivers?Occurs on different programs, some Video eg wmv, mpg etc. Also eg Photoshop elements 5
Yes i have tried a NEW driver in the radeon x600 from Driver Detective, but the whole system seemed unstable, all sorts of wierd blue screen stuff and a memory dump so I ran the original HP driver recovery disc again.

Also had a previous Blue Screen:-
   KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

I think this and a few more came even before loading sp3

can't seem to get the smileys to work, but sad is the moodcan you rememberany of the blue screen messages, and if you see any more, try and write them downGo Start>Run, type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK.
Have Windows XP CD handy. You guys are great The scannow fixed The runtime errors, many thanks.
But a problem which may have been related>>> When formatting a cd for InCd the blue screen again :- Technical info ATIPTAXX corrupt file C:\ $Secure corrupt
oxoooooo77 (oxoooooooE, oxoooooooo, oxo2A5Dooo)
Beginning dump of physical memory
Dumping to Disc : Numbers counting from 1 upwards to about 70
Then shut down. Since then I have restored most things but there is no CD/DVD drive
showing in My Computer and cannot read any cd/dvd rom at all, even in the BIOS its not there

perhaps the drive is past it's use by date I'm glad, ithelped

The drive may be dead. You may try it in another computer.

Give this a shot:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
or...
2. http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip
or...
3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.Terrific CD/DVD drive back again
But woe is me, there seems to be a software problem, caused by the Microsoft updates. Office 2002 is only partly working, Word & Power Point, the others have a blank icon.
Can't uninstall or reinstall, "Windows installer patch package could not be opened" I have installed windowsInstaller KB893803-V2-x86.exe , no joy You tried uninstalling with the Office CD, right

Alan <>< Yes I had tried to install Office using the CD, however I must have been clicking on the wrong file.
I have found the file to click on now in the CD contents: STD.MSI and it installed, it now seems to work ok

Thanks again ............. it's great to have the help you provide, hope this has helped others too.

Solve : Blue screen of death 7F?

Answer»

Hi

I'm getting a blue screen code 0x0000007F (0x00000008, BAB38D70, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I took it back to the shop and they said that my HARDWARE was fine and I should reinstall windows. Before I went down that route I just wondered if anyone had any ideas.

Thanks

DaveCheck this link out:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/137539/en-us

My guess is WOULD be bad RAM. How did they check all your hardware? It you have 2 memory modules I would try them one at a time and see if you still have the problem.
You can run memtest to check your memory.
http://www.memtest86.com/

You might also try a system restore. When you boot your computer tap F5 while it's booting, then go into safe mode. I box will pop up when safe mode loads up asking if you want to restore, do that, and SELECT a date back when you didn't have this problem. Quote

When you boot your computer tap F5 while it's booting,
I THINK you mean F8 LOL.. you're right..

Solve : Did i loose space when reformatting my pc??

Answer»

I am not pc savvy so i am not sure if i am being paranoid or not. After many attempts to re install the OS I finally realized that i have to delete the partition. I did this. I also packed my pc with 4 gigs and it showed I had 3.25 gigs . Before the re install I had twice as many programs on my pc and more dish space. Now after the reformating I have less programs and have used more disk space. Is there any reason why this is happening? Sorry if I cant explain myself to well but i dont have the computer terminology that all of u here have. Here is a PIC of my space..there seems to be more blue space used then before i reformated

[recovering disk space -- ATTACHMENT deleted by admin]you put 4gbs of ram in? you need to use a 64bit os for it to all show up Quote from: Echo on July 04, 2008, 10:01:48 AM

This is correct - a 32 bit OS (operating system like Windows XP) can only 'use' the amount of RAM that is shown.

I can't explain this - perhaps your recollection of how much space was used before the re-install isn't QUITE right. Nonetheless, you certainly have plenty of free space (unused space) and don't need to worry.

Best of luck!

Solve : XP will not allow log in HELP!?

Answer»

I am running XP Home Edition. When I (and any other user account) tries to log in I get logged off and sent back to the Welcome screen. I have tried starting in Safe Mode - same thing HAPPENS. I did run Spybot this morning - found a couple of things and fixed them. The problem happened after running Spybot. What can I do to fix this? I need to get this fixed ASAP as I am TAKING some on-line classes.

Thanks! Can you try a Repair INSTALL with your Windows CD?What happens if I can't remember the administrator PASSWORD?You don't need the admin password to perform a Repair Install.

Boot off the CD and follow the instructions....unless this isn't your computer Here is what I am doing: During start up I hit F12, get to the menu and choose boot from cd-rom. The next screen that comes up I choose Repair and Recovery OPTION. When the next screen comes up it asks me "Which Windows installation would you like to log onto?" I choose C:\ Windows. It then asks for the Admin Password.

Is there another way to get to the Recovery Console?

Thanks! You don't want the recovery console, choose Setup Windows XP

I found this:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

As Carbon said. DO NOT use Recovery Console. Use his link.

Solve : Windows reboot then freeze?

Answer»

I have this computer I'm helping someone fix. They said they were cleaning out the tower and knocked the fan off and it damaged the cpu. One of the pins came off. So they replace the cpu, now it won't boot up.

Here's what I NOTICED. I'm trying to do a repair install booting from an XP SP2 disk, this is what is installed on the system. It will boot from the CD, and setup will start loading. But right before it gets to the setup screen where you select recovery console or install windows, it will reboot. Then when it reboots it get frozen at the post screen.

If I TRY to boot windows normally, it will get to the screen where it says "start windows normally" or "safe more", etc. No matter which option I choose it will instantly reboot, and freeze at the post screen.

I took out the hard drive and scanned for viruses, it found a couple but no big deal. Still no luck. I'm thinking possibly a bad motherboard, but I'm not sure.

Windows xp sp2
AMD Athlon 64 3800+
1 GB RAM
80 GB IDE HD
Foxconn 761GXK8MB-RS Socket 939 motherboardHave you checked the processor if it seats well in the socket? Have you also apply thermal compound onto it?Yes, I've reseated it and tried another 939 cpu that I have and reapplied thermal compound. Is your RAM composed of 2x512Mb? If it is, try connecting only one RAM and see if that will helps..Try it on both RAMśBorrow a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there.

Ok I tried a new power supply and have the same thing.

I put a new ram module in there and I don't have the freezing up anymore. I can reboot now several times without turning it off. But it still won't boot, it's in a reboot loop. I'm trying to load the recovery console, I get to where I press "r" for recovery console, but it won't get to the next screen where I press F8. It will reboot at that point every time. It looks to me like it's checking the hard drive. I'm going to go now and run chkdsk on the HD. Any other ideas?Try to replace HD cables with new ones..Tried a new IDE cable, no luck. Ran chkdsk on the drive, it didn't find any errors but it found some free space that was allocated as used space and corrected that. But still no luck.

On setup after you hit "r" for recovery it freezes where it says "Examining 76317 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi..."Try to hook your HD to a friend's computer. Setting it as a slave (so that it wouldn't treat it as a boot disk). Then run chkdsk /r on your HD.

Good Luck and keep us posted! DLoad and run the manuf. diagnostics on that drive...they are more extensive than chkdsk.I ran the western digital dft and the quick test and FULL test found no errors.

I have a new hard drive I tried to see if I could have anymore luck. I put it in and started setup, it would let me go the the F8 key to agree, go to the next screen then freeze.

I think I'm running out of options. Possible a bad motherboard? Quote from: JoeMama on July 01, 2008, 10:25:27 AM

They said they were cleaning out the tower and knocked the fan off and it damaged the cpu. One of the pins came off. So they replace the cpu, now it won't BO.........

Yeah maybe your friend inadvertently damaged the motherboard?Any bulging/discolored caps on that board ? ?
