Solve : padex??

Answer»

i have this app in xp sys32 cant find out what it is , anyone?  lb54 thxIs this a EXE file?

padex.exe ?

You can right click it and get some INFO about it...version...company....etc...

Is the correct spelling padexe.exe? Whether yes or no, Toshiba laptops use a program of that name for touchpad configuration, but the program file is located in this folder: C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\PadTouch\ which is not the folder you mentioned.

However, I quote from file.net...

http://www.file.net/process/padexe.exe.html

Quote

Some malware CAMOUFLAGE themselves as PadExe.exe, PARTICULARLY if they are located in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folder.

I am not permitted to ADVISE you further therefore. I suggest you post in the malware section.

Solve : Remapped keyboard, can no longer log on?

Answer»

Ok, so here's what I did:
I remapped my keyboard (because i wanted to learn how) using KeyTweak
q= 1
a = eject
w= capslock
e = x

so now I can't logon because i need the a and e, which no longer exist on my keyboard...

i have tried:
using an external keyboard
logging onto the guest account (which will not work for some reason)
logging onto the admin. but i have changed the basic password and forgot it
restoring to the last known good configuration

any IDEAS?u better use you guest account , and use "regedit" in cmd over there.I can't get into the guest account.solution 1

go to dos prompt  and then insert the key bord utility c.d in ur drive. install it once again.

if u donot HAV key board c.d then

solution 2 ,

steps

1) switch off ur computer.
2) wait for 5 min.
3) open ur cpu.
4) remove the battery wait 1 min and then reinsert the battery.

that wil FLUSH password.I don't have a CD for the keyboard.
This password is for the basic log on into my computer. I dont think that taking the battery out will make a difference... since this has been done by replacing the battery and all the passwords stay.wel u write this querry in the dos forum becoz i think u cannot correct it from windows.I  got it fixed, I had to hit the "windows" key and then "u" which brings up an on-screen keyboard. Thanks for your help!Glad you got it working.

Solve : Losing novell?

Answer»

Can somebody help? I want to wipe a computer clean of any novell COMPONENTS. I have a computer my father gave me that is CONFIGURED to access his jobs network...he still uses his old computer and doesn't NEED this one. I want to keep the current version of Win XP Pro that they have installed but after that I just assume get rid of everything and start from scratch. I unfortunately don't have the windows installation disks so I can't really REFORMAT the drive....where should I start?
Any Ideas?
Thanks1) uninstall anything you don't want
2) manually remove what you don't want
3) run CCleaner and fix your registry then wipe clean
4) open a command prompt and type "chkdsk c: /r /f" with no quotes. It will ask if you want to schedule a check during the next boot, type "y" then reboot (note- this could take a long time to FINISH when the process boots up, get a book)
5) run a defragmentor program

This is a quick way for you to start more or less "fresh"Easy Cleaners
-- Freeware registry scanner
Registrar Lite
-- Excellent replacement for Windows Regedit
Crap Cleaner
-- Freeware registry scanner/history cleaner

Caution is advised when using these programs!
Create backups of all important files before proceeding.

What is it that causes the initial window asking me to logon? I removed client for novell through add /remove but it still shows the standalone and domain choices at startup and I still have to put in the password to logon.
I appreciate the help but I guess I'm asking for an idea of "What it is I don't want" can I post a some kind of startup logfile so I know what network components are left to get rid of?
Thanks Guys

Solve : A Windows XP calendar??

Answer»

I'm running XP home edition on a Dell Dimension 4400. Is there a calendar buried in XP somewhere that I can place on my desktop? Not that I KNOW of... However, if you surf the web, I'm sure you'll come across what you're looking for...

[glb]Flame[/glb]You could always put a Icon/Shortcut to your My Way calendar on your desktop. This would make it easy to get too and be handy for LOGGING reminders etc.

My 2½¢Double-click the CLOCK in the systray... (?)

To choose a different calendar Open Regional and Language Options in Control Panel.

On the Regional Options tab, under Standards and formats, click Customize.

On the Date tab, in the Calendar type LIST, click a calendar type.

Notes

To open Regional and Language Options, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Regional and Language Options.

If Calendar type is not available, your location does not support multiple calendars. The region selected under Standards and formats on the Regional Options tab determines whether multiple calendars are available.

The closest thing to what you want is the calendar in Microsoft Outlook.

You need to install videocard drivers.

Do you remember the name of the videocard you are using?there is a video card that the computer  autodetected and it was a standard vga card(somewhere around there).
Quote

It then did not fully detect it. That is why it is only offering you very basic choices.

If you do the following:

1. Start
2. Run
3. type DXDIAG
4. Monitor tab

What name is displayed?
LOOK under the Audio tab as well to see if a name is displayed.

Chances are that if neither work properly, no software on your computer can TELL what is installed.

Have you still got the items that BELONG to your video and sound card? Or do you perhaps recall their names? Quote

Then i got info about my video DRIVER and it said something like ibm..vga campitable.  And also when i restarted the computer i pressed the  pause/break  button  on the keyboard and i got other info about my video driver but the only thing it said was ega/vga. If the videocard is onboard, you should visit the CHIPSET's manufacturer website.

However, install the utility I provided you with first as it can remove many doubts.

Solve : Windows XP...????

Answer»

I have just reinstalled WINDOWS XP, but I can only set my display properties to a maximum of 16 colours and a screen resolution 800x600. I THOUGHT Windows XP was meant to detect my graphics card for me. Is it faulty?XP can't always detect the graphics card and from your description I THINK you need to install the graphics card driver.
Depending on your system, you may have ONE on a driver or motherboard CD that came with the computer.everytime I've reinstalled XP, I've had to install the card's own graphics driverOnce again, reinstall the drivers and you should be OK.

Solve : Computer icons (& EVERYTHING) is wrong color/size?

Answer»

I just restarted my computer and when it loaded was everything huge!  The icons are way bigger than normal and are weird colors.  For a minute I thought I was in safe mode, but I'm not.  I restarted it to see if it would go back to normal but it hasn't.  It's hard to explain, but if anyone can help me fix it it would be very much appreciated. Tell us about the operating system, and the kind of computer.  Also, do you remember the last thing you were doing (surfing the 'net, or running a particular application) before you started having the problem?

You may be able to right-click on the desktop, select properties, click the settings tab, and see how the video resolution is set...My computer is Windows XP Professional.
I was deleting some programs in the add/delete thing in the control panel.  I'm thinking maybe I deleted something IMPORTANT :S.  But I can't think of anything I could have deleted.  In the DISPLAY properties, settings, it says my screen resolution is 640 by 480 pixels, and the color quality is Lowest (4 bit)..but I can't make it any higher.  try to re-install the graphic card,

please tell us the video card/ gfx cardHow do I reinstall the graphics card?  I went to device manager to see if it was listed there but I'm not quite sure what to look for.Jade, do you have an entry in Device Manager for Display Adapter?  When you click on the little + box, what does it tell you?It says 'Intel(R) 82845G Graphics Controller'.Oh, well I restarted it and it's all fixed now .   Which is weird, because I had restarted it before.  But ANYWAY, thankyou very much for HELPING! Excellent!

I chalk that up to "Sometimes It's Better to Be Lucky Than Good" and I'm not too proud to admit it!

Solve : Getting a program to run on start-up?

Answer»

I've got several small utility programs that I WOULD like to run every time I start up my computer. I'm USING windows xp w/sp2. When I go to msconfig to try and get these to start up with the other programs, the programs are not LISTED. How can I get these things(or other programs) to BOOT up with all the other stuff?  I'm assuming XP here...
Documents and Settings/User/Start Menu/Startup...
DRAG the program's executable into this folder...

You should be good to go.There are a fair few ways of achieving this...

Through the Registry e.g. HKLM _RUN

Through system infomraiton files e.g. win.ini

Through scheduled tasks

Through the windows "start up" folder.

Using shell hooks.

Solve : Files and Settings Transfer Wizard help?

Answer»

I recently had problems with my computer so I opted to do a re-install of Windows XP. I used the files and settings transfer WIZARD to transfer some of my programs to a secondary FreeAgent hard drive. It shows the files as being copied in 4 different files for a total of around 5GB. My problem is they are all DAT files and I can't FIGURE out how to retrieve the programs. Please help. I am lost. The secondary hard drive connects to my computer via USB.I beleieve you need to run FAST on the new setup and point it to where the files are located when prompted...How do I do that? And is there a way to only recover certain files? I couldn't get it to work so I have already reloaded all my programs on the new install. So I don't really need them all now, my AOL has changed to the new software so I don't really want the old. All I really want is my pictures. If there is not a way, can I use system restore once I get my pictures back and save them elsewhere. Sorry but I really just need my pictures and that is all. Thanks for your help. Had same problem here is a link that u need to follow:

Solve : Computer System Problems?

Answer»

I only know basics about computers, and have a PC that had been having problems. I got a laptop started using it and just left the other sitting.  I would like to know if theres a way to restore it to its ORIGINAL condition when I first got it.  Its a Compaq and Windows XP.  I have tried system restore, when it tells be to choose a date to restore to, the only date available is today.
Other problems are:
*On my desktop, the only icon that will open is a document I have from the word processor. If I tried to open My Computer or others, the screen goes right back to my desktop.
*When I click on Start, I can get Microsoft Offices to open.  No My Computer, or Control Pantel.  The way I got to System Restore was to go to Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Restore.
Compaq's ship with what's known as a Recovery CD...running this will take the machine back to Day One status.

NOTE: You will lose all data and programs on the machine so make sure to BACKUP what you need.wait until patio READS this and see what he says

click tools , internet options , advanced , reset internet explorer options click reset , and FOLLOW instructions

it will take pc back to when you got it without losing anything

harryThis indeed works on Compaq's that shipped with the Recovery info on a hidden partition...we still don't know if this is the case. That sounds great and this very well could be a crazy question coming from me but how exactly do I click on tools.  I can't open the My Computer or really anything from desktop.  I can't get to it or control panel clicking on Start.  Thanks for replying.Did it come with a Recovery CD ? ?I believe it did but now that I need it its nowhere to be found.  This computer is a few years old.  I called Compaq to see if maybe they could send another but I guess since its such an older model they gave me another number.  I called, there was a recording that they were closed.  This leads me to think that it might be a hassle to get another copy of the recovery cd.  I will TRY to call back during business hours and see what happens.  ThanksHave you tried in safemode ? ?

Solve : LoadLibrary error when I try to use my scanner. HELP!?

Answer»

I just got one of those Kodak all in one printers. Well, I loaded the software and it WORKED fine for the FIRST couple of days. I also downloaded photoshop to edit my pic/projects. I tried reloading the software and unistalling then REINSTALLING it without any change. I asked the Kodak people, but they say it is a microsoft error therefore not printer related. Solve : setting up wireless internet connections - Windows XP?

Answer»

I have a wireless router and am trying to GET the family computers all hooked up again. I had to REINSTALL the software of the computer which is hooked up to the internet service (cable internet) and so then I had to configure router settings again. We have Linksys router and 1 wireless adapter card and the other computer has built-in wifi with it.

I never used security settings in the PAST because I just assumed the default settings were the secure settings. When I found out they weren't I wanted to set up the security settings, naturally.

the wireless card is not able to use WPA so I had to use WEP settings at 128 bit.

I have the laptop with the card hooked up and I typed in the WEP key etc. It's connected and I'm using that now.

My problem is getting the computer with the built-in wifi to be able to connect too. I thought I typed in the STUFF correctly but it's not connecting.

That computer has Windows XP.

I went into Network Connections and clicked on the connection then clicked Properties then clicked Wireless NETWORKS tab then selected the SSID name from the list and clicked Properties button.

for Network Authentication I selected "open"
for data encryption I selected "WEP"
in the network key box I copy/pasted the long 26 character code that Linksys had generated for the password I selected. It had generated 4 of those codes and I assumed any code would be able to connect. The computer I am using now connected with the first code. I tried two of the codes for the other computer but it doesn't connect.

What am I doing wrong here?Do you get any error messages?
Have you tried updating the driver for the wireless adapter?I'm not sure why it wasn't working before but it's working now. My husband said he clicked some button that said "repair connection". I had tried that myself and it didn't work when I tried it

Solve : PLEASE HELP- ANYONE?

Answer»

My computer seems to be messed up beyond repare. I've tried countless anti VIRUS anti spyware anti whatevers on it and it's still acting really bad. I don't even have control over what I can and can't do with it, it's terrible. Someone please just give me some kind of idea of what to do.What do you mean by bad? It laggs, it crashes or it plains just fails to load? Well if that all fails there are a few things you can do

1. Remove all Programs that you do not need anymore

2. MAKE sure you have a spyware/adware scan that goes with your virus scan

3. You can always erase and reformat your computer and start fresh * This is not recomended and is only a last resort*
- You need a windows operating CD, a floopry for a start up disk and another free FLOPPY for a program

I would give you more advice if you were more detail with the problemsMost of my programs just completely fail to load. My instant messenger and Windows Media Player most notably. My CD's were recently stolen and I had all of them backed up on my computer in windows media format. My burner is basically useless. My main concern is actually my music so I don't want to have to system restore. Do you know of a way to back all my music up before I system restore? We may be able to help, Dave, but we're going to need some more specific information.

I don't even have control over what I can and can't do with it

Give us some examples. Was there a definite point in time when this started happening, perhaps after installing a program or downloading a file, or an update? What are your system specs, most importantly your operating system (Windows XP, 2000, 98, etc.).

What happens? You must be getting error messages...what do they say? Are there any programs at all that work?

If you can't burn them to CD, you'll need an external hard drive or flash drive. But that may not be necessary if we FIND you do not need to do a system restore.

Give us the details.

A few things you might try:

* Connect your computer to another computer and use the network setup wizard to create a direct cable connection, then copy the files to the other computer.

* Set up a free account with My Yahoo! or G-Mail or some other service and upload all your music files to the website.

* Install a new CD burning program (or reinstall an old one) and burn the music to the CD.

* ADD a second hard drive in your computer and copy all your music files to it.

Before you reinstall the operating system, please tell us:  Do you think it may be a virus or a mechanical problem with your hard drive, or some other reason that is the cause of your problems?

Doc
It started about a good 4 months ago. I just got a cable modem connected so I think it may have something to do with it. I have a fairly new emachines machine with a 2.5 mhz processer. Running the Windows XP home.

I get a lot of '... has encountered an unexpected error' messages.

A get a lot of pop ups and my internet explorer home page is always set to some advertiser's search engine.

That means your computer got attack by... spyware /adware.... better get it fix. Get the most popular program adaware (find it at download.com) its free! or spybot search and destroy... for the errors im betting a registry scan and repair should get rid of most of them... By the way I advise you to update your virus scan or change it to avast antivirus its free and it picks up some, not alot but some adaware in real time!Use Error Nuker for searching and fixing registry problems at
http://www.errornuker.com  and scan, then window direct you to installation packet and this packet to downloading.Download it and fix problems.
sn:W7W963F4662E-25796XE8996R-3439W3E3976R
it's good.I would do a clean re-install when you can replace the disks (from eMachines?) and use AVG Free Home Edition anti-virus and scan with SpyBot SD and AdAware SE against Trojans.

I also use SpywareBlaster to guard against all of this cheap unprofessional crap on the internet.a little advice about ad aware se, recently i have had some problems with it, it works fine and is good at dtecting problems, but if u have norton antivirus installed, it might not be a good idea to get it because it reacts with norton giving u various problems...

Solve : HP laptop won't start! (Some of the time)?

Answer»

I'm having a really weird problem: When I turn on my computer, it just freezes with a BLANK screen, without even showing the BIOS splash screen thing. I can tell it's on, since the power light indicator thingy lights up and I can STILL open the CD drive tray. And the really weird part is that if I restart it once or twice, it works fine.
(I have an HP PAVILION ze5185 laptop with PhoenixBIOS (can't remember the revision number) and Windows XP Home Edition w/ SP2.)
Please help me!!! It's getting really annoying!
When a PC starts it has to go thru  a POST (power on self test). This will loads BIOS, when the BIOS finish loading. The OS starts to load. So if u have to turn it on and off several times to POST, it may be several things:

bad power supply (PS)
bad MB
or u might have to upgrade the BIOS.

Try upgrading the BIOS with the  latest version and see what happens. If this works great, if not check the voltage coming from the PS. Last u might need a new MB

Good luck and let us know what happens.BTW is it making any noise. It is giving a series of beeps. If it is giving a series of beeps count them, WRITE down the number of beeps. go to MS Support or the PC manufactor and do a search.

Solve : Video mode?

Answer»

Windows 98, 3nd EDITION.  Everything running great.  Suddenly during boot up, just after Wndows 98 screen is shown, screen goes TOTALLY black and the message "Cannot display this video mode" appears.  Am at a loss as cannot get to any desktop controls. etc.Try changing the display setting. If that fails, test monitor: PLUG into different computer and see what happens.  See if same thing happens with other monitor.Cannot change display because cannot get to control panel. Then test the monitor in the manner I described before. You should be able to start in safe mode then ADJUST your display SETTINGS (low), then reboot.Hold down the f5 key on boot up...for safe mode.Have you recently reloaded the system,if so you will need the graphics drivers....

Solve : At my wits end of this problem?

Answer»

Well here's my problem, my computer hangs up randomly. Now I don't mean bsod or crash in general, I mean a total system freeze, mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc, stops responding and they freeze in position on the screen wherever they are. This usually happens once a day, but has happened up to 3 or 4 times. When I restart the event viewer sees no errors nor does my system report an error of any kind.

System Overview
OS: XP pro 5.1 build 2600, service pack 1
Motherboard: Soyo P4VTE
Bios: 7.00T
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 3.00GHz, hyperthreaded
RAM: 1024 DDR Elixer
Direct X: 9c
Graphics Card: nVIDIA 5700LE 256mb ram, driver v. 7.1.8.9
H.D.D.: Maxtor 160GB, 5700 RPM, 8MB cache

If A HijackThis log is needed I can post one

What I have tried already

1) Changing my video driver
2) Swapping ram, using memtest 86 first - no errors found
3) Removing Norton
4) Removing Service Pack 2
5) Removing all programs not default to windows
6) System restore
7) Switching IDE CABLES
Adjusting the hyperthreading option, agp control, and ram control in bios, they are now at their default
9) Searched microsoft for a knowledge based article
10) Did a search in general on every forum I could find
11) Defragmented
12) Used the checkdisk (chkdsk) utility, "chkdsk /r /f" - found no bad sectors
13) Checked power, it's just fine
14) Did a virus, adware, spyware, and malware check, found nothing
15) Adjusted unnecessary options in Services in msconfig, turned them off, then reset them back to default
16) Backed up registry and made adjustments with ccleaner - great program by the way
17) Used norton win doctor to try and find any problems
18) Checked for IRQ conflict
19) Well I probably did more but I can't remember any at the moment

Also, my firefox browser has begun to lag lately as the freezes continue, it could be a seperate issue but if it helps. . .

Any help is greatly appreciated.
1. Does the same behaviour occur in safe mode?
2. Is your virus scanner set to continiously scan?
3. What scanners have you used?

Test your Hard Disk Drive using diagnostic software which can be obtainded from the manufacturer. Download sisoft sandra/or aida32 and run diagnostics..........it may be heat related1) Safe mode I haven't tried, that'll probably be next
2) Yes I have a continuous Norton Scan for viruses and worms, version 2005 system works
3) I use ad-aware, spybot, spyware blaster, norton antivirus. When I removed Norton I switched to AVG Antivirus but it to found nothing. Quote

2. Try shutting down ALL scanners and see if the stuttering dissapears.

Well when I had norton removed effectively I had no continuous scanner, and that's what you want to check right? To make sure some bho or background service isn't doing me harm? I think it would be unwise to leave myself without a SHIELD.

Also using aida32 my +12v is only reaching +7.5 at max. Is my power supply failing? Currently my cpu is 42C and my motherboard is 32C.

That sandra soft didn't really give what I needed. But good appz none the less.Graphics drivers!I have removed my graphics driver and have tried 4 others, problem still occurs. But is my power supply failing? If your 12V rail is at only 7.5V you have a serious problem. All rails should read +\- 5%. You could have other problems but this one should certainly be the first on your list.Well i'm going to grab another power supply and try and fix this. But please! keep this thread going, god only knows i've tried just about everything to fix this problem, so all continuing input is appreciated.+12v has stabillized at about +11.2, is that within acceptable range?Still a bit low. Minimum should be 11.4
You can now try disconnecting some of the 12V peripherals and see if it comes up higher. In either event, you probably need a PSU that will provide better VOLTAGES. If you should be decide to buy a new, the BEST advise I can give is: Don't be a cheapskate. invest your money in a high quality PSU. (Your wallet might have to be your guide but there are some good quality PSU that don't cost a fortune.)Well i'm all for it. A new power supply is what i'm out to buy. Quote
Also using aida32 my +12v is only reaching +7.5 at max. Is my power supply failing?

What brand of Power Supply do you have installed?

You should:

  • Be prepared to spend more than $ 50 on a Power Supply Unit
  • It is not too light. A 500 Watts weighting only 1 kilogram may not be as durable as a 300 Watts weighing over 1.5 kilogram
  • Buy a well known brand name PSU that has 400 Watts of true power or more.
I bought a SY-PS400 from soyo, average price 60$, on sale for 30$ . Looks to be of good quality, 400 Watts and even comes with a slot for measuring the 3.3 and 5 volt charge. Weight, i'm not too sure, it seems strong enough.

To believe it was my power supply of all things, hopefully. I sure don't want it to keep freezing after this.

Well thanks for all your help, it was needed.

Solve : install drivers?

Answer»

my problem is i cant get my computer to install new drivers
for my ethernet card, the computer can not find it. im using
windows 98.Go to device MANAGER, select the nic, click propeties. Select update driver, have disk, insert driver disk, point windows to it.Butchuh:

Is the network INTERFACE card (NIC) an ISA or a PCI expansion card?  That is, does it use a white or a brown colored slot on the MOTHERBOARD?

Also, does device manager show that it found an unknown device (ONE marked by a yellow circle with a question mark) or does it show no new devices at all?

Lets 2k or i know.
DocHi  butchuh

Please follow  pcdoc4christ's advice

But I WANT to add one thing here:

when you are giving the floppy of the driver it will tell you to specify a location.

You may haveto give the exact location then

say, if you give A: only as the location it may not be able to find the driver.

you may have to specify the exact folder location also, say A:\Win98 (win98 is the folder where your driverfor NIC is located)

Note: When you are giving the driver it will also ask for the Win98 CD ROM

Solve : Problems with Service Pack 2?

Answer»

About a month ago I downloaded and installed (no CD) MS XP-Pro’s Service Pack 2. Ever since I have had almost endless problems and am currently about to toss my SYSTEM out the window! If anyone can help I will be very grateful.

Problems: System is extremely slow – slow –slow: all applications, all situations and apparently not connected with any consistent pattern. It can take between 3-5 minutes to launch MS Word or most other programs.

System hangs at various intervals, again with no apparent pattern

Keyboard stops working and then starts working again without my doing anything other than hitting some keys – sometimes this can take up to 3 minutes before any response

I can TYPE faster than system can keep up and I do not type that fast!

System takes forever – upwards of 7-10 minutes to shut down – again, without regard to what is open at time or whether I close apps prior to attempting to shut down.

System Specs: Dell Dimension 8200; Pentium 4 -512MB RAM; OS: Windows XP – Pro with Service Pack 2; Software installed: Norton Internet Security (run active and updated 2x week);  Photoshop CS2; MS Office Pro; Coral Print Office; no added games. 2 external hard drives; 2 printers (only one kept active and connected); Scanner and Broadband (Cable) Modem.

I have taken the following STEPS without success: I run adware detector in background and an active scan 1/day; Everest Home indicates that I have 1758MB of virtual MEMORY with only 33% in use – however, I keep getting “out of memory” messages – without a pattern to when they crop up; Prior to installing the service pack I had reformatted by hard drive and had prepared for installation as told by Microsoft techs.

I have been told so many conflicting things from so many people at Microsoft, Dell and other sites: I need more RAM – I have enough RAM (that is one person says I need RAM and another says no); I need to allocate more virtual memory – I did and it made no difference; I need to reformat and reinstall all software – I did this prior to the installation and it has made no difference, I am reluctant to do this again because of the time involved and not knowing if it will help. So, any good advice will be very welcome! Thank you.

So did you remove service pack 2 and is now on service pack 1 or are you still using service pack 2? There are many people who ahve trouble if they download and run service pack 2, from what I hear service pack 2 that came with XP the newer ones, no one seems to have problems... I suggest keep service pack1 unless you reall need service pack2. Service pack 2 only gives you a firewall, and some extra security thingyI have had the "fear of God" as it were drilled into me by the folks at Microsoft about the "crucial need" to keep Service Pack 2 that I have not removed it, but I have been sorely tempted. I suppose the worst that could happen is that removing it makes no difference. Does anyone know if this is really as crucial as MS says?WinXP-SP2 is not the problem.  I think it might be Norton Internet Security.  Uninstall it and see what happens.  BTW, P4-512MB RAM is more than enough for anything EXCEPT serious gaming.

Solve : ACPI complaint?

Answer»

I have installed a seagate 160GB HARD drive with XP from an old Gateway with a bad motherboard into my mom's HP XT858. I get a ACPI complaint. It tells me to turn off during text MODE set up, press7 when prompted to install storage drivers. I  can't get any other screen to APPEAR or the ACPI  complaint off.

The HP XT858 has  a 1 Hz PENTIUM processor, 516 ram, thought I would try to change the 60 GB hard drive with ME to maybe get a little more time from her old system. Thought the bigger hard drive would handle XP better.

How do I proceed ?

Steve   With XP and later versions you cannot simply swap a drive from one machine to the NEXT and have it boot properly...
This is by design.

You can however try the following if you have an XP CD from MS with shiny holograms all over it:

If you are installing from the network, it is possible that not all of the files were copied CORRECTLY to your disk drive. Run the disk checking utility on your installation drive from the Recovery Console and start setup again.

Yes I did clean the disk and also I restarted the computer and started the recovery console and it asked me which windows installation would I like to log onto and I chose the only one there was - C:\Windows

then it asked me for the administrator password:  I'm not aware that there is a password so I just pushed "enter"

then I did C:\WNDOWS>chkdsk

The volume appears to be in good condition and was not checked. Use \p uf you want to check the volume anyway.

Solve : Resolution Error - Not Support Mode?

Hey guys, IM new here and was lloking for help This happened 5 minutes ago. You did reinstall the drivers???   It seems so, but you did not specifically say you have done that.Sorry, I don't know what it is, nor do i know how to enable/disable it. Please fill me in Hmm, how did you install it if you don't know what it is?  Anyway, right click on My Computer, select Properties, select the Hardware tab, and then click on Device Manager.  You should see an item called Display adapters.  Click on the + sign NEXT to it to display the sub-title under it.  What is that sub-title named?  Most likely, it will start with NVIDIA or ATI, followed by the model of your display adapter.

And, while you're in Device Manager, does it show any yellow triangles with exclamation marks inside?  No problems with my devices I am using NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT/GTO and i figured out what cleartype was and enabled it. didn't help.

Solve : Windows XP is not genuine??

Answer»
Hello, guys how are you doing?

i have a problem with windows XP. microsoft detects that my windows XP is not Genuine. so, that MEANS i have to buy the new windows XP SP2.
right now the problem  is with the installation windows. i don't want to format my PC because i have installed the new Norton internet security 2008. then if i format it i will lose this security.

my question is, if i upgrade do you think that my window becomes genuine? what about my anti-virus?

please guys i need to this issue before i start upgrade

thank you very muchHow many times did you active xp?  There is a limit of about twenty times that you can after that it wont activate cause it LOOKS for hardware changes.  You shouldn't have to buy service pack two however it was made to fix some errors so upgading mite allow you too if you havent reapeatly installed xp an activated it.Hi, had the same problem so have a few friends of mine, we are here in Hungary and there are no consumer protection laws to speak of so this problem if rife. Afraid you will need to go through the procedure, check your Windows version on the Windows wesite, hold your hands up to an invalid version and buy the validation pack, about 150 dollars. Then you can either have a a CD delivered (which is advisable if you ever need to re-install your system) or download a valid Key. There is a a facility on the Genuine Advantage page to VALIDATE your copy of Windows with the key you have purchased without having to re-install so all your stored info will be retained. Hope this helps. Regards, Kingy
       thanks guys

but i am not satisfied. any how i will try to upgrade it. and see what will happen

Solve : Curious About a Couple Things?

I've had things on my computer, stuff that came along with something I downloaded.  Found them, got rid of them with antivirus/spyware programs.  But what I would like to know more about are programs such as KEYLOGGERS, etc which may have been installed on a computer by an individual wanting to spy on a second user.
What would SOMEONE look for?
How easy are these programs to disable?
Are these installed programs easy to detect, and .... how?
Are these programs LISTED in the results of a virus check?  Are these programs easily obtainable?

And, in case you're wondering, nope I'm not worried about my computer.....just CURIOUS.  DLoad, install, update and run AVG Anti-Spyware and AsQuared on that machine...
Both Free and they will tell you if you have a keylogger...

Solve : Tough time watching streaming video?

Answer»

This is my first post.  I am a computer beginner.  I like to watch podcasts and streaming video on woodworking subjects.  I can't seem to do this and it is quite frustrating.

I have:

1.  A new Dell PC.
2.  I am using Mozilla and Internet Explorer.
3.  I have a HIGH speed internet connection.

Most videos quite working after a couple of minutes.  Another thing occurs when I TRY to download a podcast.  The operation fails due to "TIMING out."

Any HELP is appreciated.

S MortonSounds like something with your connection. Do you have a download accelerator running? I wouldn't think you would with high speed. MAYBE something with your firewall? Computer specs, please. And if you do watch a lot of streaming videos it's neccessary to empty your Temp. Internet File folder more often...

But as Broni asked...more info.

My pc will only start in safe mode. If i do not start it in safe mode then after about 10seconds of booting up the monitor just seems to switch itself off. If anyone could help i would really appreciate it. I havent GOT a clue what to do  Clik Here...I'm using MICROSOFT windows XP service pack 1.
There hasn't been any error messages.
I'm using a desktop computer which i think is a TYPHOON make.
Last night i reformatted due to a seperate issue and the probelm started when the reformatting had finished. Why no SP2 ? ?
After FORMATTING how did you re-install XP ? ?Sorry, what i meant is the problem occured after XP was installed. No SP2 because the problem started before i got chance to install it.I would do another clean install...

Boot to the XP CD and have it remove the partition and re-create it.
Install XP.
Re-boot and install the MBoard drivers.
Install the VIDEO drivers if applicable.
Install SP2.
Then your protection apps before you go online.

If you still have issues with this method you either have an overheating problem or power issues...

Solve : Merging text files.?

Answer»

Is there a utility included with any Windows or MS-Dos version (not a third-party program) which will merge two or more alpha-sorted text files?

Thanks. Not directly, but there are a couple of utilities that will accomplish the TASK.

Code: [Select]copy fileA.txt+fileB.txt fileC.txt
sort fileC.txt /o fileD.txt

The copy statement concatenates the two files; the sort statement sorts the contents of the concatenated file effectively sort/merging the records

Sort is ONE of the few commands that can TAKE input from the pipe. Unfortunately, the code produced REALLY WRONG output when I used it.Thanks, that way is already used, just wanted to get round having to copy/resort the files.

Solve : DEMOSHIELD PLAYER - HELP NEEDED ASAP, MUCH APPRECIATED!!?

Answer»

What is demoshield? Why does it keep giving me an error every time I try to install a computer game? Very frustrating as it never happened on my old computer now I have a new one and I only have problems. Any suggestions to help me? Your replies are much appreciated!! I looked online and found some suggestions like downloading QuickTime Player 7, which I did and it still didn't solve my issue!! Very frustrated!!Demoshield is discontinued line of INSTALLER (by Macrovision), however some games may still USE it.
I found this:
Quote

Some programs that use Macrovision's DemoShield in their installers may not install on Windows computers that have QuickTime 7.0 to 7.0.2 installed.

To resolve this issue, install QuickTime 7.0.3 or later before RUNNING an installer that uses DemoShield. iTunes 6 and 7 does include a later version of QuickTime.

Solve : Windows restore/freezing issue?

Answer»

Hello,
I recently had problems with my monitor (flashing and now it turns off a second after turing it on) and decided to do a system restore, thinking it was a driver issue.  I restored it to a few days prior and it didn't fix the problem.  After attaching another monitor (it works fine) windows (XP) now freezes after loading all the startup programs.  I decided to restore further and did a TOTAL of three times.  I used the "on/off" button to reboot the computer everytime it froze.  I feel I have corrupted windows.  I use Trend Micro Antivirus and Webroot Spysweeper.  The computer is an HP and when I called them they wanted to sell me another computer instead of help me.  I can gain access to the internet and some programs in SAFE Mode with Networking.  If I have left out any information, I will respond back.
Does "bad" monitor work in Safe Mode?I just tried, and I think it's fried.  It does the same even in safe mode.Did you try "bad" monitor with another computer?...and?The monitor didn't work with the laptop either.R+I+PIm not really worried about the monitor, just the win XP freezing after loadingDoes it freeze in Safe Mode?
What are computer specs: processor speed, amount of RAM, hard drive size/free space?amd athlon 64 X2 dual core processor 4200+

How is your computer security?192GB free out of 224.  i probably need updates on my security, I use Trend Micro Antivirus and Webroot Spysweeper.  Let's make sure your computer is clean...

You cannot format C: using this method. If you format the c: drive, you'll lose whatever files are currently stored there.

Why do you want to format the "c:" drive?  Are you attempting to "wipe" the drive PRIOR to discarding it (or GIVING it away)?  Or are you attempting to wipe the drive prior to reinstalling Windows?

Solve : Trying to recover boot partition on drive using Active Partition?

Answer»

Has anyone RECOVERED a boot partition on a drive using Active Partition? I never have but need to TRY. I did a deep scan and it found the boot partition OK and it says 'recoverable' by it. When I tried to recover it tells me some partition is overlapped on it and it fails so this is a clue I'm sure. Then it also says to delete the overlapped partition first but I'm not sure what partition is the good one. So now I want to be sure I do the next steps right to get it to work again. What happened was that I had tried to install windows XP on a unpartitioned PART of the HD but in the process it must've overwrote the original boot partition some. I didn't proceed fully with the XP install but did go back in and delete the partition I was going to install it on thinking that would fix it but it didn't. I have high hopes in restoring it but want to proceed with CAUTION. Thanks for any advice you can give me. Boot with your XP CD in...hit R to load the Recovery Console.
At the prompt type fixboot and hit Enter.
Remove the XP CD and re-boot.

If there's still no change repeat the procedure but type in fixmbr.

Could you explain exactly how to do this?

Additional information and help with the boot.iniAnd don't forget this bit...

How to rebuild the Windows boot.iniIn the boot.ini file, the line that says timeout may be set to 0, which is the how many seconds the boot select screen displays before it chooses the default SELECTION. Change this to something like 10 or however much time you need to select a partition.

Solve : Scanner wont work?

Answer»

i have a compaq s4 100 scanner and i installed it and restarted windows and i made sure the printer was on and it wants me to run a test scan and i try but it says it cant find the scanner and i know its on and plugged in my friend says something bout a driver but i dont know what hes talking about do u know how to solve this porblem?Umm we saw your first post. A driver is a program that tells the computer what it is... First if you are looking for drivers http://www.driversguide.com secound make sure your USB on your computer works. Look under device manager by right clicking MY computer and go to device manager check to see if there is a yellow ! or a red Xsorry about doubling the topic my computer was going slow at the time and i DIDNT think it was LOADING it but i looked and there is a yello question mark by it what do i do?Is the yellow question mark scanner or USB. what is the word with the yellow question markits by the scanner iWell if its by scanner then that means you need to update your computer driver. First go to http://www.driversguide.com go look for your scanner driver. make sure you have the right model and the right operating system. Once you download it double click on the yellow ! and select update driver. Where ever you extract the driver use "Use specific location" to go there. It should find it and install.

By the way if it ask you to sign in use this screen name:

User: Drivers
Password: All

Or simply try installing from your CD to see if it works. If the scanner is old and you are installing it on a new OS then you probbly need to go to drivers guide to get an update version for ithow do i know what kind of driver i got?Well it should tell you by the yellow ! and select driver from the tab. It should tell you the year the driver was made and by who all you have to do is fine one that is newer then it. To get the right driver make sure you know the company that makes your scanner and the model nuber ex. Canon (company) FB620U (name of scaner)

Yes, what you are seeing is from XP view I don't want to turn on my windows98 computer so no one ask if they wondering why I have an XP view if I use windows98it doesnt say i have a windows 98 computer i click on the driver tab and it says no driver files are required or have been loaded forthis device to update the driver for this device click update driver ......i just now found thatYes, that is what you are suppose to do is update your driver. Right now the only way you can update is 1. You have the Scanner CD and install it, or go online download a copy of the driver and manually upgrade it yourself.. In windows98 you have to update the driver yourself when you download it. It should be somewhere where it tells you what driver you have or if it doesn't have one it should say Unknown Device or just Scanneri still cant find what drvier it had it just says compaq s4 100 but there nothing like the on the list but i lick on general tab and it says driver for device not installed to reinstall driver for device click on reinstall driversOk, it just means it knows what kind of scanner you have but it doesn't have the right tool to run it. First do you know what is the name of your scanner? Second do you know the company that made it? You don't have to worry on which driver it has right now. In driversguide it will list the drivers by date also, so if you want to download the latest one then ya you could or if you feel safer with an older one then ok you can do that. The most important thing is to look at the year of the driver ex. 1997. That means you should get a driver after that year.so i canjust install ne driver from that site cuz i know the name of the scanner and everything if this is what u r saying which one would u preferYes, just install one over the site. As long as it is a newer year from the one you currently have. Also make sure you have the right Operating system for that driver. You can look to your right and where it says OS on the tab make sure you choose Windows 98 and All Drivers if you want to see them all

Updating the driver should help. If you still have problems with the device let me or anyone else that works here know. That should help fix the problemi tried to install a cannon scanner drive but it say i have to open it with something what do i open it with? You don't open it, Once you extract the file it should be a .bin file or it should be in a notepad like file. On you driver screen when you hit [Update Driver] you go select [Specify Location] When the Window opens up on where to look go to [Browse] and go to where ever you extracted that file. Then hit [Ok] It should show you you teh name of the scanner then you hit next then Ok and your all setwell when i went to download the one i want it only took a sec and then its on my desktop as scandev.386
did i do it wrong?Once you get to browse did you go to where the file was. it would be something.ini file. Once you double click that it should show the name of the scanner. hit next and it should FINISH Hit Update Driver.

From there you browse and in search you put in where you downloaded that file. *Note some are LARGE because they come in package. Some are small because it contains the infomation you needed. All you do is once you select the folder that you put the doenload in hit next and it should install automatically.

i deleted the scandev.386 file ihad and downloaded a diferent canon one and its axually downloading a setup.exe file right now is that good?Well, if its.exe it maybe better. Heck I just installed a canon driver on my PC. Its a Canoscan FB620U The pictures are the steps i used to install it. It will extract into a folder C:/ temp i believe where the driver will be located. If you look at the picture try to do the best step you can do to mimic that procedure to install it with windows 98. then everything should be fineso once its done downloading all i do it double click it and it will extract?Wen you run it you should see it extracting to C:/ Temp then on update drivers you follow the steps and when you go to look for at a specific location you browse into C:/temp If you cant hit Ok then go to disk1 if you have that folder. Go into  the folder in C:/temp if there is a folder in there. Keep going into the folder till the OK button is availablewhen i upgraded it it looked like i i had to do was keep pushin next so i did and i needed a windows 98 sedisc and i didnt have it so i clicked next file did i dothe right thing? It required teh windows 98 secound edition disk... hmm that is important, but see what happens when you try it without. I recomend that you do but as you know all computers that came with windows 98 didnt actually come with a CD just a computer that says windows 98thanks foryou help but i guess im done withthe scanner bc i dont have the windows diskTry finding the proper drivers at Driver Guide.

Log in with Drivers/all.wont i still need a windows disk to do it? Quote

wont i still need a windows disk to do it?

Proper drivers shouldn't ask for the CD.do u know of them that dont ask for the disk? Quote
do u know of them that dont ask for the disk?

You will have to visit the website to find the proper drivers.i already downloaded a canon last night if i download a new one do i just click update driver on the tab? Quote
i already downloaded a canon last night if i download a new one do i just click update driver on the tab?

You should first remove the old driver and then allow for redetection, it often works better in that way.

If it is an .exe file (Installer) you simply need to open it.how would i remove the driver?Remove it from your 'Device Manager'.i looked everywhere and i dont see it all isee is the scanner with the yellow ! under imaging devices Quote
all isee is the scanner with the yellow

Double click on it then select the 'drivers' tab.
There are probably none installed anyway.
What is the full file name of the driver you downloaded?i forgot last night cannon wasnt wokring right so i got a compaq driver and it just say provider was compaq and on the other tab it says manufactureer was: compaq#001A Quote
compaq s4 100 scanner

Why are you trying to get a canon driver?
You need to get a driver for your compaq s4 100 scanner or use the generic windows drivers.
Did you get the driver for your compaq s4 100 scanner?well i looked under compaq and found the scanners compaq s4-100 driver and it had every windows os colored box beside it but when i click on it it says operating systems : xp and i have winows 98 what should i do?Try it, you can always remove it if it doesn't work.
What is the full name of the file you downloaded??i tried to download it but thefiles that download  wheni click them one says cant run on current board and the other says not compatable with video card what do i do or do i have to get a new scanner?I wouldn't say get a new scanner if yours is fine. All you need to do is make sure you have the right driver for the scanner. Also make sure it is compatible and see will setup install it automatically. If it requires a Windows98 Cd for aditional files.... Well, try another driver. From either a diffrent release date. If all are like that Then I recomend you borrow a CD from a friend or someonemy scanner is a s4-100 and i tried to download that scanner and since it didnt work does the driver i install does it still have to be compaq or can i try something else?Remove any existing scanner drivers.
Download the following file to your desktop.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?dlc=en&lc=en&product=217323&lang=en&cc=us&os=20&softwareitem=34901
Double click on it and follow the onscreen prompts.everytime i put something in the usb port even like a WEB cam it wants me to put the windows 98 disk in to do something with the driver and i dont have the disk what should i do?Is that you Flame?Flame, quit it.whats goin on?....... can somebody answer my question?Well there isn't much you can do unless you have a Windows 98 CD. It is trying to install certain files which can only be found from the CD. I don't know any other way around it... Unless you know someone who has a working Windows 98 CD.Find the software to run usb devices...........am i able to find the thing online or will i really need the disk for it?
