Solve : Re-installing Windows ME?

Answer»

I have a (Dell) Pentium 4 Dimension 8100 with 128 of RAM. My OS is Windows XP which obviously doesn't work with my non-existant RAM..... THe COMPUTER originally came with ME but I decided to install XP and at the time I did not know it would run so slowly. So now I need to re-install ME but the CD to re install it won't work because I am in XP... So, how the heck do I re-install ME?

Any help?Download a bootdisk for free at www.bootdisk.com

Double click on the file with a blank floppy in the drive o CREATE the boot floppy.

Put the WindowsME CD in the drive, and the new boot disk in the floppy. Restart the machine.

When given the CHOICE, TAKE the first option to start with CDROM support.

When you get to A:> type in:

format c:/u/s

When that finishes, press enter.

type e:\setup and press enter.

Follow the prompts

SOme CD's are BOOTABLE. If you want to try that, just restart the machine with CD in the drive.

NOTE: You cannot do this from within Windows. That was the problem, Mac. The rambus is too expen$ive to be practical in his case.OUCH!!!

Solve : network drives map?

Answer»

Hi,

With the issue of mapping network drive,  I've got something i want to check with you here. Recently i have two COMPUTERS and TRYING to set permission on some of the folders on ONE of them. Presumably that compA is a CLIENT COMP and servercomp is the server. There is a folder called sharedfolder on servercomp and has been set permission to let clientcomp to access. In that folder, i have a subfolder called testfolder.

On the clientcomp, i tried to set up mapping network drive to the folder with the use of username and password. Everything is working in a sense that i could access the sharedfolder and i can read and write files under that folder. Now, thing i want to ask of you is that i have already set the subfolder 'testfolder' with the permission not to let clientcomp to access but it still allows me to access. Very frustrating (already spent hours on this).

Thank you in advance.
Because the fact that you let it access before, it will still have access intially, unless you re-make the folder, and start over again.

Solve : Windows is blocking access to an exe file?

Answer»

There is a program I need to install but Windows is BLOCKING the .exe file. It says "to protect your computer, some files were blocked" when I try to unzip it.

It's an HP computer and the help on it has never worked from DAY one. How can I bypass this? I know for sure it's an okay file....

Thanks,
HeatherAre you logged in with Admin rights?Oh yeah. It's funny because I've downloaded TONS of programs before and have not had to deal with this before.what is the complete error message - word for word? Is this some kind of warez? Are we sure YOOUR computer is clean? If the help doesn't work correctly, whatt ELSE doesn't?
Windows Security Warning: Windows found that this file is potentially harmful. To help protect your computer, Windows has blocked access to this program.

It's clean...like I said, the HP help didn't work when we bought it new 2 years. It has nothing to do with it being clean. Everything else works perfectly and I haven't had this problem before.1.. Save the file onto your computer.
2.. Click Start, click My Computer, and navigate to the file that you saved.
3.. Right-click the file that you saved, and then click Properties.
4.. Click Unblock near the bottom of the dialog box.
                                       or
Try this: Open Administrative Tools (Control Panel), select Services, scroll to Security Center, stop it if it's running and then select "Disable" and apply.

Solve : Can't get pass the password screen?

Answer»

I can't get pass the password screen on my laptop with XP.
I enter the correct user name and password and it looks like it is going to let me in... then the screen just comes right back to the logon screen without any error messages.
I click on F8 to GO into safe mode and I choose safe mode and still brings me right to the regular logon scrren.
I don't think it's password related because if I purposely enter a wrong password, it tells me that it's wrong.
Any help would be appreciated.

JI give up. What kind of laptop is it?When you try and get into safe mode are you logging in as Administrator or your regular name?

Should be ADMIN - this is the original unchanged default account.
If that does the same, Last Known Good COnfiguration? Still no joy?....time to reinstall your OS.I would love to re-install the OS, but my 15-year old niece has a lot of stories she wrote on the laptop (and of course, she did not back it up) she has been writing for almost a year.
Yes, I did try the 'Last Known Good Configuration..."
Laptop is an off brand. Nobilis Built to Order Laptop.
It's P4, XP home, 512MB.
I asked several of my "techie" friends and no one seems know what is going on...
She uses this laptop solely for her stories. She has never gone online with this laptop, so I don't think it's a virus or anything.

JI guess no one can help...
Does anyone know how to get the files off of this laptop?Check to see if the CAPS Lock isn't selected.  Sometimes passwords & usernames are case-sensitive.

If you can get into Windows, you could PURCHASE a USB Flash Drive to save the files and then be able to transfer them to another PC or laptop.  That would be the easiest and most convenient way to back up the text files. Please read the original problem...
The problem is not password related.
I cannot get into windows.

I just reformat and backup what I need but hey thats just me  The smart thing would be to boot with a Linux Live CD and copy the files o a flash drive, to floppy, or wherever. Linspire is the most Windows like Linux and should do NICELY. The 5.0 LiveCD is a free download.

http://iso.linuxquestions.org/distro.php?distro=58

The file is an ISO so you will need to have someone burn it to a CD with Nero, ec. You can't just copy it. Just boo with that CD in the drive and you should be good to go. It's not Windowos, so none of the Windows crappola applies to it.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Solve : Internet Problem that deals with my computer!?

Answer»

Ok, this has happened to me before, but on a different computer. Out of the blue, from nowhere, I get online, and I go to a certain website, and all of the sudden, everything is huge. The text is WAY too big and it takes up too much space. It used to be smaller before, but now all the text is huge. It only happens on certain websites, so I am REALLY confused. Can someone help me with the problem? I know it isn't my internet, so it has to be something with my computer!

ThanksWhen you get on those sites you can hold down the control key and turn your wheel on your MOUSE, if you have one, to make LARGER or smaller.

Solve : Encrypt contents to secure data?

Answer»

Encrypt contents to secure data, I want to do this to a folder but where the check mark is its grayed out. What could be wrong, I have win xp service pack 2. I looked at this link and it DOESNT say why its grayed out.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/learnmore/encryptdata.mspxThere is a reason it called an encrypted folder. This folder is not intended for anyone, so nothing seriously wrong happens to your computer.Maybe you misunderstood me. I want to make a folder that only i can VIEW, but the option to do this is Grayed out, encrypt contents to secure data, it wont let me put a TICK in encrypt. Is your hard DRIVE NTFS or FAT32? ENCRYPTION only works on NTFS format are they compress? You can not encrypt compress folders also

I shut the Laptop manually and restart it and it repeated the same procedure to the point that previously stalled and it stalled again :-? Is it a Hardware problem?

Solve : WinXP "access denied" to files?

Answer»

I have two different computers at home, both with WinXP installs.  One has the Professional version, one has the Home version.  I have added drives, upgraded parts, etc. on both of these computers on a regular basis.

This problem has occurred at least twice (I think three different times now), when I install a new hard DRIVE (need more storage!) into the computer and do a WinXP complete new install.  I then install the old drive into the computer and attempt to copy files from the Documents and Settings|UserName folder from the "old" drive to the "new" drive.  Normally, I have two users setup, myself (Andy) and my wife (Julie).  I am always able to get full access to the Shared Documents folders and Julie's Documents, but I ALWAYS get an Access DENIED error when I attempt to access Andy's Documents.  We are both setup with administrator privledges.  I believe that when I do a "clean install" of windows, it's always when I'm logged in as Andy, and I suspect that has something to do with the problem I experience each time.

My most recent "brush with death" was when one computer failed to POST.  I took the hard drive out and installed it into the other computer, so we could get access to some important DATA.  Again, I could get at Shared Documents and Julie's Documents, but not Andy's.  It doesn't seem to matter if I attempt this while logged in as Andy, Julie, or the Administrator (access denied each time).

Any ideas or suggestions (besides backing up all data before another hard drive swap) would be appreciated.
/meHobie:

This is a security feature of Windows XP to keep others from accessing your files when they log on to your computer, but which also keeps you from accessing the files from a different operating system (even if you use the same user name in that other operating system).  You may only view the files if you are logged on to the original operating system with the original user name.

In Windows XP Home you opted for the setting to keep your user files private.  In Windows XP Professional, you have chosen to encrypt the files.  You may remove encryption by booting to Windows on the old hard drive (jumper it as the master), right-clicking on the Documents And Settings folder, and choosing Properties from the context menu.  In the Properties dialog box, click the Advanced button, then uncheck Encrypt Contents To Secure Data, and then click Yes when asked if you want to apply the change to all subfolders.  You will then have to log on with the other user name and do the same.

In Windows XP Home, there may be a way to log on as a user and disable the option to MAKE files private.

Let us know how it goes,
Doc

We have had a lot of posts from people who have security proofed themseloves from their own files. BIOS passwords, Logon passwords, encrytption, third party programs for safety - be SURE you understand them and are willing to take the risks if it get's FUBAR'ed or you "forget" your passwords.GX:

Agreed.  Sounds like a good one to add to the Q&A thread.

Solve : Renaming floppy disk drive?

Answer»

I have Windows 98 SE. The floppy disk drive (A drive) has renamed itself as "removable disk (A:)" and when floppy disks are inserted, the computer does not recognise them.

How do I put this right?Go to Control Panel/Device Manager, right click on it and delete it. Reboot your computer and look again. It should be back to normal.

What spywarfe/adware/virus solutions do you have in place and being used? (I just always have to ask....)I've gone to control panel, but can't find device manager!

I have Norton Internet security software.Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device ManagerOk, got as far as device manager, but not SURE what to right click on. there's no mention of A drive or removable disk in the list so far as I can seeYou have to click on an item (on the plus sign) to expand the list. You will find it there.I thought that, but I can't find what I want.
Under the Disk Drive bit there is just the hard drive. There's also Floppy Disk Controllers which opens up to STANDARD Floppy Disk Controller. Is that what I need? There's nothing else that seems APPROPRIATE, but no specific mention of A drive or removable disk. That's right Joanne, remove the standard floppy disk controller and then reboot the computer. Windows should re-detect and reinstallt he drivers for the floppy disk drive. If you encounter the same ISSUE again it's likely not a driver related issue and something else such as a bad floppy disk drive. One additional step you can do before determing it's a bad floppy disk drive is try to boot to a bootable floppy diskette. Such as your Windows 98 boot disk.Cheers for all the help.  Have tried removing standard floppy disk controller and rebooting, but has not worked, so sounds like I've got a dodgy disk drive.  [smiley=dankk2.gif]

Solve : Can't get IP address?

Answer»

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone COULD help me out here. I thought this's gonna be easy to connect to the internet.

What HAPPENED was i have just bought a new hard disk and installed it on to my computer. After having installed windows XP Pro, office 2003, and everything else, I went to TRY doubleclicking the IE to see if i can surf the internet. It failed to connect to the internet. I then went to network connection and noticed that there is no IP address there. I have a broadband modem router at HOME and before i bought this new hard drive, i could go online to the internet. Everything was fine. I have ANOTHER laptop connected to the modem router and it's given IP address. What's happenning here? Is it to do with the installation of windows XP because everything is still new.

I have even tried to make a new connection but in vain. Could anyone suggest i should do to be able to get IP address from the modem router.

Thank you in advance.

Solve : Window recover issues?

Answer»

Hi, first time here so be easy on me.  I have a computer from cyberpower which is 2 years oldish.  80 gig hd, 256 pc2700 pc333 DDR, P4 3.0 ghz 478, p4p800 mobo, 350 watt power supply.  OK, on to the question,  I just ran the recovery disk formatted the hard drive and reinstalled windows, now the problem is, when I reinstalled and restarted it acted like it was a dual boot and one option is my new install and the other option is my old install windows with nothing but icons and empty folders..... So how do I get rid of the original boot partition? and second question, I have a really old 20 gig hard drive I was trying to put on, couldnt find info on the jumper PLACEMENT, where would I find that? You can edit the boot.ini file, but the reason this happened is that you did nnot forma the partition before you installed for whatever reason, so you have two installations, possibly  even on the same drive?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;289022

What computer make/model? Do you have a "recovery CD" or a Windows CD?

You can go to the drive manufacturer's website for information on the jumpers. What make/model is it? Don't forget that BOTH drives have to be jumpered correctly, thenn check when the machine boots that both are seen in the BIOS/setup screens.

see the thing is, I did, I FORMATED, and all the second boot is, is a bunch of empty files, like nothing is in any of the files no music, programs, just files and all my icons on the desktop.  I have a recovery CD, make is Cyberpower, and the person who bought it set it up as a CUSTOM deal type thing Quote

No telling what all is involve then, as a system restore (generally speaking for the major MANUFACTURERS) formats the drive and then reinstalls everything to th like the DAY you received it.

WIth this "custom deal type thing", who knows what it is supposed to do? This may be it.

Solve : Windows Debug Command (IN XP)?

Answer»

I used to be able to CHANGE the keyboard lights in windows 95 and 98 by going to command prompt and entering

debug
e 0000:0417  20
q

This would change my keyboard lights depending on the hex VALUE that I would write. However that no long works in XP. anyone know why, or how could I still be able to access that PART of memory.

thank youI guess I'm just slow, but why would you even want to do that?  excuse me for not explaining.   I was trying to teach someone about the way memory addresses work.  And this was one of the things I used to pull out to show the interaction of memory with the HARDWARE. But when I tried to demonstrate it. It seemed like XP just overrided my controll over that part of memory.  Thats why I want to know, is there any other way users could get back control.

There are about a million different manufacturers using the S3 Virge chipset on their video cards.  If you don't have the right driver, your video display will not work correctly.  I suggest opening up your computer and looking at the video card itself for a MODEL number.  If you don't see one written on the card, you will find it on the MAIN chip (the big square one).  It should have the label S3 Virge and then a model number underneath it.  Use that model number to track down the correct driver.  I usually type in for example, "S3 Virge 82C395 Win95 drivers DOWNLOAD" in a search engine and go from there.
Again I appreciate all the help. I TOLD y0ou at the beginning i am a beginner and I need patience and understanding. I am willing to try anything within reason of course. Solve : Blue screen of death when startup, HELP!?

Answer»

My FRIEND's computer shows the blue screen when she starts it up.  I guess she has schoolwork and other STUFF on it.  The only thing I can think of to FIX it was to restore her computer, but she can't find the discs to do that.  Plus, she would probably LIKE to keep the stuff on her computer so that wouldn't help that.  So, I have two questions...

Is there any way she could fix this problem without losing all of her stuff?

If not, is there any way to fix the problem at all?

Your FEEDBACK will be greatly appreciated, thanks!if you can post the error message, what preceded this and a LOT more information about the computer and operaing system, possibly so. In the meantime, can you boot to safe mode? (Tap F8 several times as the computer is starting, before the Windows logo.)

Solve : Digital Pictures and DVD/VCD burner??

Answer»

Ok, I'm new to this SITE but here goes.  I am running XP. New computer for Christmas.  I've got a Kodak camera and have MANAGED to get it installed and running as good as it did on the old computer running Windows 98.  Here's my problem.  This computer has a cd and dvd burner ( I think). I have WinMovieMaker and want to make a dvd or video CD with my DIGITAL pictures that will play on any dvd PLAYER. When I click on the buttons indicated, it looks to me that it's doing its thing, but the dvd or cd will not play in a regular dvd player.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. If you do not have a DVD burner then you cannot write a DVD. You may want to explore that issue firist. You can google for the make and model number if you don't still have the instructions that came with it. If it is a burner, you probably got some burning software too.OK--here's what I found.  Under mY computer - HP DVD WRITER 740b
Properties -- Device status -- working properly
I also tried updating driver and roll back driver

Any ideas?
I am not familiar with that software. Did you get a manual with that? How about the F1 key or the help file? What format are you burning it to?

What about a read on this forum?  They speak that language.

1. If you dont have a Router get one!!! lol, I'm using a LINKSYS router, you can get one at any kind of Corporate Electronic Store (Best Buy, Circuit City, COMPUSA etc...). you would also need some kind of Ethernet Cable a CAT5 works greaaat.

2. Hook up your Modem to your router, and take another ethernet cable to your main Computer I'm going to call that computer COMP A, and you also need to go from your Router To the other computer that you want to hook up the network too. Im going to call this computer COMP B.

3. When you have it all hooked as it says in your installation Manual, Go to COMP A and login if you are not already then go to> START>CONTROL PANEL>NETWORK CONNECTIONS and on the Left side there will be a link called Set-up a Home/Small Business Netowork. Go To Step 4

4. It should say WELCOME TO THE NETWORK SETUP WIZARD>Click Next> It goes to the Next Screen BEFORE YOU CONTINUE.....>click Next> If it brings up a screen were you have to SELECT you Network restart the network and Make SURE you have you Eithernet cable Connected.

5. You have 3 selections to chose from since we are connecting Through A router we are going to chose the 2 option>THIS COMPUTER CONNECTS TO THE INTERNET THROUGH A RESIDENTIAL GATEWAT OR THROUGH ANOTHER COMPUTER ON MY NETWORK... Click it and then Click Next>Where It Says COMPUTER DESCRIPTION PUT ANYTHING YOU LIKE.>and then where it says Computer Name Put a name you would like to call your computer on this Network. After your done with all that Click Next>Now here is a Main part of the network where it says MSHOME you can change this but i would recommend to leave it alone for Newbies doing this. If your not a newbie put in a workgroup name you want to call your workgroup.>Click Next

6. If you want to TURN on file and printer Sharing you can turn it on. and it will ask you to restart your computer please do so...

7. Repeat Steps 3-6 on COMP B, but make sure it has the same workgroup name you decided on COMP A if you left it as MSHOME don't worry about making sure it has the same workgroup as MSHOME is the default Workgroup
_______________________________________ _________
STILL CAN'T CONNECT
Here is the part it gets tricky and i mean there could be a lot of different reasons why you can connect to your Workgroup.

1st make sure that COMP A and COMP B have the same login name below is an example.
_______________________________________ ________
COMP A LOGIN Josh>COMP B LOGIN Josh. if it doesn't go into either computer the go to  START>CONTROL PANEL>USER ACCOUNTS>click on your username and Click CHANGE ACCOUNT NAME.
_______________________________________ _________

after that see if you can connect to your other computer there will be a shortcut called MY NETWORK PLACES if that doesn't work try either of the steps below

1 possibility Will be that you get a error box saying Mshome is not accessible please see the adminstrator of this network or something like that.

if you get a Username and password box that looks like this

USERNAME - \\COMP A NAME\Guest
PASSWORD - *BLANK*

you would have to go to what ever Computer COMP A is and then go to>START>RUN>type control userpasswords2 in the RUN box. it will bring up a screen telling you what your useraccounts are uncheck the box that says USERS MUST ENTER A USER NAME AND PASSWORD TO USE THIS COMP. if you dont want the people to access this computer though. If not then click on the box under Password for Adminstrator and click RESET PASSWORD make up a password as it doesn't ask you for the OLD PASSWORD, once you done that try to access COMP A or COMP B which everone u can connect too.
if you still cant access it try NEXT STEP.

START>RUN>\\192.168.1.100 or \\COMP A/B Name
you should be able to login now YAAAAAAAA  .

If you cant Repeat Steaps 3-6 and the information below STILL CANT CONNECT.

If you need more help Feel free to PM me at any of the information provided below

Solve : Help with creating shortcut using VBS?

Answer»

Hi,

I've tried to manage to create a SHORTCUT after mapping the network drive using VBscript. This is my first TRIAL. I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me fix this. Mapping the network drive is working. But when i tried to incorporate the shortcut script into the mapping network drive, that's when it's not working.

Here is my code.
Option Explicit
Dim objNetwork
Dim strUser, strPassword, strProfile
Dim strDriveLetter, strRemotePath
Dim WshShell      ' Object variable
Dim strTargetPath
Dim strWorkingDir

' Values of VARIABLES SET for Drive H
strDriveLetter = "H:"
strRemotePath = "\\192.168.2.11\netlogon"
strUser = "myuser"
strPassword = "mypasswd"
strProfile = "false"

' This section creates a network object. (objNetwork)
' Then apply MapNetworkDrive method. RESULT H: drive
' Note, this script features 5 arguments on lines 21/22.
Set objNetwork = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Network")

' Section which maps two drives, H: and J:
objNetwork.MapNetworkDrive strDriveLetter, strRemotePath, _
strProfile, strUser, strPassword

' Create new WshShell object, whose CreateShortcut method we need.
Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

Dim MyShortcut
Dim MyDesktop
Dim DesktopPath
Dim TargetPath

strTargetPath = "H:\\192.168.2.11\netlogon"
strWorkingDir = "My Computer"

DesktopPath = WSHShell.SpecialFolders("Desktop")
Set MyShortcut = WSHShell.CreateShortcut(DesktopPath & "\test.lnk")
MyShortcut.TargetPath = WSHShell.ExpandEnvironmentStrings(strTargetPath)
MyShortcut.WorkingDirectory = WSHShell.ExpandEnvironmentStrings(strWorkingDir)
MyShortcut.Save

Solve : Dell Windows XP Home?

Answer»

I have a Dell machine and SOMETHING happened and WINDOWS XP Home was corrupted. I tried to run a repair, but that option was not AVAILABLE so I reformatted the hard drive and I'm trying to install a clean copy of XP Home SP2 on the machine using the Product Key on the sticker on the case, but I keep getting invalid product key. I don't have the original Dell XP Cd, so I'm just using a XP Home CD. Any ideas on the problem? ThanksOEM and Retail procedures can be different. I predict this will not work. Sorry.

I would contact Dell and see if they can help you but you may be LOOKING at near the COST of an XP purchase for a CD from them.i got it to work, forgot to label which cd was which, but either the OEM or Retail XP Home Cd worked. thanks.

Solve : My Music not updating?

Answer»

After I download a song onto my computer it won't show in my My Music folder for some reason. It's worked fine before, I've downloaded over 900 songs to date. Any idea as to why it might not be working?

I use eMule to download my music.

Microsoft XPWell after CHECKING my eMule program files I found that the songs that would not show up in my music were stored in a folder named "Incoming"/

How do I GET them to go to My Music and not to the eMules Incoming Folder? Armando.... Usually those P2P APPS create a folder into which the downloaded music is stored ....... so that the D/Ls are available to be uploaded to other p2p users as requested. Is it POSSIBLE that Emule has had a RECENT revision and the default has been changed ?
I think that if its a big deal ....why not Email ........... Emule and ask them , they should be able to give you an anwser.
you might also try visiting their forum and post your question .....
http://forum.emule-project.net/

dl65
Just have a look at the settings.

There should be an option to change the default download folder.

I just want some feedback... Thanks... Overall is it good?I've never tried it. I would be CAREFUL with that stuff... IE 7 caused some issues... I'm interested to know myself

The final decision is yours ........
If your a risk taker ...LOL ....check it out and provide some imput here .... The first THING I would be checking out is if you remove it will things be back to as they were before installing it .

Solve : Loading Win xp problem?

Answer»

Can someone please tell me what may be the problem with the following, I am trying to load winxp, on a pc, I put the boot disk in the a drive and boot from the floppy, then I typed smartdv , and then I try to change to the directory with the winxp cd by typing (cd d:\) but it will only change to the directory only for a brief moment then it defaults back to a:\.  So I am unable to run the FILE i386 on the cd drive.   Is there something wrong with the cd drive??  I have TRIED typing cd d:\, e:\, f:\, etc...nothing works, it keeps defaulting to the a:\.   PLEASE HELP, THIS SEEMS SO SIMPLE.  THANKS :-? :-? williamsan...... Why dont you simply put the bootable XP cd in the cd-rom and then reboot ....... XP will the rest ........be sure and select the NTFS .....

dl65  I tried that and that did not work, I think.  But what do you mean the NTFS, forgive my ignorance, I have not done this in a LONG time.

I put the xp CD in the drive and rebooted, and the computer comes up with the ERROR, "can't find system disk"  black screen.  I forget the exact error, but something like. that.  So what do you think? :-?

Where as if I boot with the floppy it comes up and gives me the option to select boot with cd support, etc.....that is when I can't switch the directory.

Thanks,
Angela williamsan.... Sorry about all the questions ....... but it sounds like you do not have a bootable cd ......... Are you sure its an original win XP cd or a copy ?

Have you managed to format your drive by using the boot disk ?

dl65  It is a copy of winxp, I have used it before on another pc I have and I was able to load it from the cd I beleive.

I have not formated any DRIVES using the cd??

I tried the windows hotfix for this problem, removed firewalls and a/v and searched here and the web to no avail. Does anybody have any SUGGESTIONS ( and I dont WANT to hear get rid of sp2)Did you TRY the Dell support forums? If this is a known ISSUE for that machine they will know.Tried dell support, no help. Tried microsoft, no help. I finally got the wireless to connect to the router but it will not display a web page. I am TOTALLY stumped! I think I need a re-format.Did you post on the support forum as suggested  or what specifically did you do?

A reformat and reinstall may solve the problem if there are other non-hardware issues. Back up your data first if you need to.

I dont know if they have the XP cd I will have to ask.try Safe Mode . Press F8 repeatedly at startup.Ask if they ever made a password reset floppy and take a look at this article. leannet.....You might try BOOTING into safe mode and  see if it will boot up from there .   If it will you can go into Control panel / USERS and click on admin ...... then you should be able to remove any passwords which might be set .

Solve : spyware infection?

Answer»

On page 2 some of you helped Tripgirl with a problem that sounds very similar to mine. I have a HP zv5000 laptop, XP HE 2002 SP2, P4 3.20 Ghz 896 mb Ram. When I log-in and I get to the blue screen I have a big black box that says spyware infection in big orange letters then goes on to TELL me there is a spyware infection and windows advises me to use a spyware removal tool. I have run microsofts antispyware program and downloaded spyware doctor and run it also, to no avail, I can't get rid of this warning on my screen.
I think I understood some of what was SUGGESTED, I just don't want thrash all my progams and have to start over. I could use some help with this.   :-?wm49.....  Ok  ..... Before we start , you should do the following ......
Turn off your SYSTEM restore feature until we get this issue under control....
To do this ..... click START /Control Panel/    make sure its displaying the Classic view ...then select System .........then click the System Restore tab .....
then PUT a check mark in the box in front of ....turn off system restore on all drives ....click apply and ok ...... then exit back to desktop .........

Next reboot into safe mode ...... To do this ...as the system is beginning to reboot ....repeatedly tap the F8 key ..... you will then see a menu offering you various ways to start ....choose ..... SAFE mode ......... and press enter .
It will load ...... andyou will see the word safe in the 4 corners of your screen ........

Once it has loaded....open your anti virus program and do a full system scan ...... If anything is found ....record what it was and then have your AV delete it ......

When the AV scan has finished ....... It wouldnt hurt to run your antispyware Beta .......  and again if anything is found ....record what it was and let the program delete it ......

Now reboot and it will come back up in normal mode ......... See how things are .......

let us know ....

dl65

performed the functions you said too but the box is still there. Went to safe mode and when it finished loading I tried to access my IP AV but would not open so I opened AV BETA first. When it finished, I opened the other one and ran it. I then deleted all viruses and spyware, but no luck with the black box.    wm49...  Ok .... what were the nasties found ?

Those names may take us to the next step .....
So you never ran a virus scan from safe mode then ..... Is that correct ?

Solve : Running DOS programs on XP?

Answer»

Looking for a quick and simple answer. Can LOTUS 123 VER 3.4 FOR DOS be installed and run on a computer running WINDOWS XP?

ThanksI doubt it.  Dont know the exact name :

But something like "dosit" is used to run Dos based applications on windows. Not SURE why you'd want to do it?  Some modern spreadsheets may be able to read the old Lotus 123 files if you've installed all the file converters.Quick answer: Maybe

DOS PROGRAMS that directly handle I/O to the file system will not run on XP. If they use the OS (Windows) to handle the I/O, they will run just fine.

Personally I have a DOS checkbook program (Managing Your Money c.1986) that runs just fine on XP.

Suggestion: Install Lotus and SEE what happens. Worst CASE it will crash or hang. Then you know.

Good luck. 8-)

The disc spins but won't start.I have windows Xp.

Help.Try the drive oon another computer to see if it works properly. does Windows see the drive? Eventually you will need a real CD to boot from. Just remember....

Does it do this with all game CD's or just one specifically? If so is it a burnt copy or an original?

Solve : I Broke my drive links?

I like tweaking my computer, so i have installed several things to add to my right click windows.

on the drives(C:, E:, ect.) i have things like check and defrag.  i didnt need them there because i never USED them, and they were making my menu huge.  i looked in the FILE options and it wouldnt let me change the menu for a drive(  ).  Me just being me, decided to go into the regestry(HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive), and take some out.  it worked fine, but now the DEFAULT option is to open command window there, because i left that in and happen to like it.  i dont WANT to restore, becase i have changed other things and i dont want them to get messed up.
Could you help me get the Open option to the default option ?cant anyone figure this out?   :-?  Could someone just give me a copy of their regestry key ?Possibly some of the forum members would respond if you would only tell us what OS you are running!!!

Have you read this :-?]

Did you backup your registry before taking a hatchet to it :-?  Do you have any registry backups :-?  Do you have hard-copy details of all the changes you have made to your registry :-?

Copying someone else's registry entries is not a good idea.yes, i have read that, and i forgot it.   .
i am running windows xp home, and the only backups i have are after i messed it up, or from months ago.

i already did a search for topics like this, too.

Solve : Need help. Clueless.?

Answer»

I have been having this same problem with my computer for about a week or so, and nobody can seem to help me diagnose what the problem is. I have been told things from "your logitech mouse drivers are out of date" to "your cpu is overheating". Please advise.

I run Windows XP Home edition, an AMD Athlon XP processor and 1GB of RAM.

Recently, I uninstalled Norton Systemworks 2005. Afterwards, I was prompted to restart my computer for the changes to take effect. Upon restart, *just as my desktop loads*, my computer gives me the BSOD and restarts itself. I am only able to access my computer through Safe Mode (which I am currently on). I went to My Computer, disabled "auto-restart on system failure" (so that I could get time to read the BSOD), and TRIED rebooting. This is the message it gives me.

IRQL_LESS_NOT_EQUAL

A few odd things about this:

One of the Symantec technical support guys had me go into my system and delete all folders, files and registry keys that had anything to do with Symantec. After doing this and rebooting, I *was* able to access my computer in Normal mode. I was then advised to download and run a certain program from Symantec that would automatically FIND and remove any remaining Symantec software from my computer. After running this program I was prompted to restart once again, thus leading me back here. Same BSOD, but no more Symantec products to delete.

PLEASE HELP ME! If you need any other information to help diagnose the problem, feel free to ask and I will answer anything I can.Bump.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Or maybe you're all just as stumped as I am...Several things COME to mind.

1)First run free RAM test at www.memtest86.com

2)Do you by chance have a VIA IDE controller? (No info about your system so we are forced to guess?)

3)Do you have a LEGAL Windows CD to reload if ncessary?

4) Seems to be a problem with certain configurations and Symantec products. Never use that crappola! Quote

Look for it. You will need it eventually.
Keep in mind that I am running in safe mode and cannot start in normal mode.

When I try to run the memtest program, I get an error message saying:
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL. An installable Virtual Device Driver failed Dll initialization.
Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

EDIT: Also, I downloaded EVEREST. Which steps should I follow now?Run it and see what type of IDE controller is listed. You can also check your temps and lots of other handy stuff.

I would boot with the memtest CD and see if anything turns up as well. Windows doesn't fix misbehaving hardware, but if we can rule that out, then we know where to go. Quote
Run it and see what type of IDE controller is listed.

IDE Controller                                    VIA Bus Master IDE Controller

I hope that helps.Run memtest and see what you find. Plan on not using Norton with that hardware. There are known issues. Plan on reinstalling Windows in the near future if the RAM is fine. Quote

When I attempt to install the memtest version you advised, I get a command prompt that says "Memtest is a standalone memory test and must be booted from a floppy disk."

Then it says "enter target diskette drive".

As previously stated, I have no blank floppy disks. What steps do I need to take to run this program?
Do you have a blank CD you can burn the ISO to? Floppies are really cheap, also.  I am pretty sure I could get ahold of a blank CD. Once obtained, what do I do?Where do you live, I will mail you a floppy.
Is that you Flame?I can't even boot in Normal mode. How would I install anti-viral programs?

I have tried to load dmcom98.exe from a floppy disk, no luck.

I tried to open dmcomcnfg, and nothing happens.

Any ideas?
If this is too vague, I apologize. I am not sure what info to post to explain. When I get an oldie like that the FIRST thing I do is install EVEREST to find out all of the components and print them out for later reference. The SECOND thing it to format the drive and install the operating system fresh. With an unknown history and obviously problems, you will save time and headaches just starting with a clean slate. You can monkey with this stuff for a LONG time, but you don't NEED to.

Get this program now. It is disappearing quickly! This is a German SITE, but the program is in English.

DocI think it was recommended for internet connection problems.
But, I really do not remember.Perhaps:

Use the CD that your Internet service provider sent to you to set up the dial-up connection to the Internet.

DocI disagree Doc, I think ISP provided software screws up peoples thinking on how it all works.

Far better to get the dialup details (dial in #, username, password, email config details) then use Windows Internet Connection Wizard to create the dialup connection.Fed:

I agree!  If i were with perhapsure, that's exactly what i'd do.  However, i think this task is a bit beyond him/her.

It's kind of like that TV commercial where the surgeon tells the patient during a phone conversation where to make an incision with a knife in his chest, and the person says to the surgeon, "Shouldn't you be doing this?"  Many folks are just too inexperienced to make changes to TCP/IP configuration, even with our help.

Best regards,
Doc

-Ask if you have any questions.Time for a new keyboard?  Try another one to see if the problem is with the keyboard. If it is, toss it. They are cheap and proper functioning is required. This is a fairly new keyboard, and I really don't want to get rid of it, it's pretty nice. I got it a year or two ago. Can anyone please help me, I have XP proffesional, and before I log on the light is on, after it, it turns off. I can't change it either way. Help please!Good luck. I would try the other keyboard idea to see. You may want to pry off the keys and monkey around in there.Just for the record of who else wants to try this dilema, I pried off the keys, LOOKS good, pressed the button that the key presses, nothing. Just curious, could this have anything to do with the software for the keyboard software, or the drivers, or maybe just the hardware isn't agreeing with each other. Open to any, and all suggestions. Thank you!

-The BoarHave you posted this support request in more than one section?  I'm getting a big deja VU.  Yeah sorry, I never saw the hardware section b4. Sorry!

Solve : fast repeating screen captures?

Answer»

I'm trying to automate a rapid screen capture process on my win98 UNIT. I'm USING a MULTIPLE clipboard utility that allows me to switch between 9 separate clipboards with a key combination, ALT+(1-9). I'd like to combine this with ALT+PRNSC. What I NEED is a way to automate this, preferably in a SELF contained file, a Batch file maybe? I'd need to send in this order. The "+" is not sent, just shows the combination.
PRNSC
ALT+1
PRNSC
ALT+2
PRNSC
...
...
ALT+9
PRNSC
I have a utility (Launchkey) that can send keystrokes to applications and can be used by a batch file, but I have no idea what to have it send the keystrokes to. I considered using the character map, but don't see a way to use the PRNSC key with it. Is there a way to automate this without installing a specialized capture program? The captures are approx 0.5 seconds apart.
RickTurns out IrfanView already has this ability. Didn't know it did screen captures on a timer.
