Solve : two folders?

Answer»

hello

i have TWO program folders on my D:\ , would some let this old man KNOW WHATS going on? can i fix it?

THANKS much
harley

PS: going to try to send attachment

[attachment deleted by admin]hello there.
As one old man to another, I think you should just leave alone. And if anybody asks, you tell him that old man said so.
It may have been some kind of error you are somebody else may, but it is unlikely that it is doing any harm. The program folders are not identical, one has a space between Program and Files the other doesn't. The one with the space is the standard OS FILE the other has been created by a user, perhaps when installing a program. Have a look at its contents and decide if you want to delete it and reinstall the program(s).

Good luck

Solve : cutting out?

Answer»

My computer cuts out when i am using at times.Aalso when it restarts it says press del to access bios.If i SWITCH off at the mains for about 20 minutes it starts up again but i have to press F1 for it to load windows. Thanks for any help you can give me.What do you mean it 'cuts out'? Shuts off completely? Restarts? Locks up? Little monkeys in WWII fighter planes come flying out of it?

Give as much detail as possible, including full computer specs, any error messages, etc. Sometimes the smallest OVERLOOKED details can explain a big problem.when i am using my computer it just goes to restat itself. but it wont boot up into windows it just says press del to enter setup bios. But if i switch off from the mains for about 20 minutes it will start up then i have to press .F1 for it to boot into windows.I usualy have to use F1 everytime . I hope this better information.ty for your help. Quote from: kidirlam on April 21, 2009, 01:14:13 AM

When you have to press F1 to continue booting, is there some error message on the screen?

Needing to press F1 during booting usually occurs during the POST (power on self test) and indicates that there was some kind of error.I will have to wait untill it happens nextime and i will write down everything and CONTACT you if that will be OK.

Solve : cut??

Answer»

I know how to copy and paste but having difficulty with the cut part. I have put a signature pic in a forum but now I want to delete it. I went to file and there was nothing about cut on it. I'm doing something wrong somewhere along the line. Thanks for your help.
Iggy777To delete the picture you are planning to cut it??

Can you explain you intentions a little more in detail. Please! You don't necessarily have to "cut" something to delete it. Once you find the item, it's often as easy as HIGHLIGHTING the part you want to remove, and then using the Delete key.

Where in the forum are you checking for the picture?Or, you can just replace it with Ivy's picture.
I don't think she will mind. My intentions are to remove a signature picture that I posted on Neurotalk forum as it is allowed to do so. I belong to that forum because I have had three brain surgery's and talk to OTHERS who have had similar problems. I know to you it is very simple, but to me it is not. My intention is to ask you for some help so I
can figure out what the heck I'm doing. i also have an avatar at the forum but I'm keeping it for now.
Delete, remove, cut, disappear?? I don't know what you want me to call it?
                                                                                          Thanks, Iggy777
I have no ulterior motives.
I live in Kansas with 500
head of cattle. Life is simple.Neurotalk should have a Profile page, similar to this forum. You can change account settings under Profile, including removing or changing pictures chosen as avatars.Yes, there is a profile page, but I'm not sure what the steps are when I get there. My daughter says to do
Ctrl x or z . ( I'm sitting here in the dark so I can't get to my paper to see which one she said x or z) anyway
I don't know how to initiate that. Then I heard that if you click on File the drop down will offer CUT.
NOT. Thanks, Iggy777In the Profile section of the forum, you'll probably find something LIKE Profile Information, where the avatar and the contents of your signature are controlled. You should be able to modify what you need in each little sub-section. Just like on this forum, I cannot change my signature by CLICKING or right-clicking on where it appears in the posts. I have to go in my Profile, and then find the portion of the Profile which CONTROLS each of these elements. There, I can make changes.

On computer B, when I go to my school email website, it does not remember my user ID or password. How can I make computer B remember? I have check all the boxes under Tools/Internet Options/Content/AutoComplete/Settings. I think MAYBE at one point there was a popup on computer B that asked if I wanted it to remember and I said NO. I must have disabled the popup somehow.Welcome to the CH forums.

Solve : computer freezes, can't shut off?

Answer»

Hello,
My computer which uses Windows XP has started freezing up. I can't turn it off by using control, alt, delete or by the on/off button. I unplug it but when I plug it back in the fan goes really, really fast and loud and nothing works. So I keep unplugging it and eventually it will let me start it again normally.
I'm really not a computer person so I don't KNOW anything about drivers or codes or any of the stuff, so I'm sorry I can't give you more detail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance. Do you use peer to peer downloads......have you downloaded and installed any new programs lately.

Please POST your PCs specifications as well.....how old is the PC?Think it's a hardware issue.
1. Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free SPACE (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")
- security programs in use (antivirus, firewall)

2. Download, and install SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
Post your computer temperatures:

PROVIDE processor info (hold Windows key, and hit Pause/Break key to find out).

It's also not a good idea to unplug your computer like that.. Just saying.Well if that's the only thing he can do to turn off the computer. Just be careful can cause corruption of some files on your PC. Quote from: KingPincer on April 19, 2009, 03:23:28 AM

Well if that's the only thing he can do to turn off the computer. Just be careful can cause corruption of some files on your PC.
I've been doing that for ages. As long as you have no windows open, you're good. (or atleast I am)The only problem is when a window is open or let's say a program is RUNNING then the PC just freezes.

Solve : dual booting OS or virtual OS??

Solve : Boot up problem :-( Help please?

Answer»

When I turn on the computer, it says:

"Windows could not start because the following FILE is missing or corrupt:
Windows\system32\config\ system

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-Rom. Select "r" at the first screen to start repair."

Now, I know already that this requires either the RECOVERY Console or the original XP CD. I'm going with the latter, the XP CD. So I put the CD in and when the Dell screen comes up, I tapped F12 for the boot menu. It still went back to that first error screen. I tried F8 (safe mode), F2 (BIOS menu), and even "r", NOTHING WORKS. I tried boot CDs, none work.

What should I do? :-|
I would be very appreciative if someone could help me with this.

Thank you in ADVANCE. Hello

Try going into the BiOS and selecting to boot from CD drive as the first boot. Then try the fix install option. Let us know what happens. Which model Dell? Dell has some different versions of how to recovery the system.Does your computer have two CD drives? If so, you will need to put the CD in the master drive in order to boot to it. The top one is usually the master.

Solve : Print preview shows up in wrong XP session.?

Answer»

I have an Hewlett Packard XP Media Center Edition 2005 and an HP Photosmart 3210 All-in-One printer, scanner, copier.

The computer (XP Home) is set up with three user sessions, Debbie, Chris, and Pete (me). If Debbie boots, and logs in to her SESSION, there is no problem. Chris, and I can log in, and all is still fine until one of us tries to print. Debbie (first to log in) can print OK, but Chris and Pete, after sending a print job, will have to log into Debbies user session. There will be a Print PREVIEW screen waiting there, and we can then click "Print", and the printing will start. My family can work around this because we all know each others password, but it's a pain to have to continually switch USERS to print.
Another note... when a print file is sent to the printer, a printer que icon does SHOW up in the sytem tray indicating a print job pending. Click on that, and a print window tells me that a job is printing.
Thanks for any help.
Pete
Reinstall printer software, this time making sure, it's installed for ALL users.Broni,
Thanks for the reply
I uninstalled and reinstalled the printer software. There was no screen asking about ALL users. I looked in all printer config or settings menus and found no help. After reinstall, I have the same problem
Maybe a windows setting is off somewhere?
Peteinstall under each users session?

INSTALL under an administrator account? It was installed in an administrator account. I hadn't thought about multiple installations for each user. I will try that tonight.
Thank you'

Solve : Clean install of XP Pro asks for Admin login but don't know password?

Answer»

Hi folks,

I had a virus on my PC that wouldn't shift, so I formatted and did a CLEAN install of XP Pro. The installation went fine until it asked for me to create users. I skipped it because I didn't WANT to have to login each time Istarted it up, but now it takes me to an Administrator login screen when I haven't set one up, so I don't know the password! I've tried leaving it blank and typing in obvious PASSWORDS it might've picked, but all it keeps saying is: "the specific domain either does not exist or could not be contacted"

What can I do to resolve this?

Thanks.Have you tried the reinstall again and this time set up at least one account? No, I'm trying to avoid reinstalling again if I can.If you create one account, it usually doesn't ask you to log in. If it does, there are way to make it not do this and automatically log into that account and skip the Windows log-in screen.

If you're unable to log in to your admin account, it might be best for you to reinstall. If it does give you trouble with the log in screen for the user account coming up everytime, come on back and I'll walk you THOUGH how to make it not do that.Haha, well I decided to reinstall and now it's shutting down by itself when I reach the "39 mins remaining" mark. Only had it on a couple of hours but MAYBE it's overheating, so I'll try again later and get back to you. Thanks for the help.

I know exactly what he's trying to do.
OS: XP (pretty sure)
What he's trying to do is change what icons apear in the taskbar beside the clock. I can change mine...although sometimes I have to restart my computer for it to apply.Yes, that's EXACTLY the problem! But what to do? My "ticker" won't let me change any hting, show, hide..It used to do it ok..re-boot...

Re-booting helps not at all. The drop-down menu on the APPLICATION does not drop down. This has been this way for months.I don't know if this will fix your problem, but what we'll do is try to reset all of the taskbar's OPTIONS.

Go to this page:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Download item 164.

164
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/xp_taskbar_desktop_fixall.vbs

Item 164 is a VBS script which resets the taskbar settings. Some anti-virus programs are triggered by VBS scripts because they can easily be used for malicious intent, however this particular one should be fine. After applying this, restart.

Fair warning, this file changes some system settings to default. Some or all options you may have CHANGED about the taskbar, desktop and start menu will be reset by this file. Also, given the nature of this file, I can't guarantee it will work or that it won't break your system completely. I've used stuff from Kelly's Korner before without issue, but that's no guarantee that everything works. I have recommended this file to other people before and have heard no complaints.Well, Quaxo..TRIED that..scary for a minute! But got the taskbar back together, and guess what? Drop-down menu STILL didn't drop! I'd like to say thanks for your trouble, but haven't yet figured out HOW!did it ever work?
How long have you had this problem?
Did you make any software changes before this started??o, it's never worked on this new computer. Worked on old one with the same OS.Click Start then Run and type in: sfc/ scannow and press enter.
Have your XP CD handy... it will ask for it.
OK, bro...first thing in the morn, and I'll let you know ASAP.Maybe something here http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htmwait- Drop-down menu for what?

Solve : PC rebooting whenever reaches windows logo?

Answer»

Hi all.

I have a dell dimension PC. Before the problem happened, the system was shut down normally.

On next start-up. once it reaches the window logo, a blue screen appears.

"STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7A5FS24, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)"

I reboot again, and the system let me chose to start in safe mode, with networking, with cmd, LAST know config and normally. I chose all and STILL it ENDS up with blue screen.

Next, i put in XP REINSTALL CD and reboot from CD. I chose the repair the Xp installation which went to completion without error.

However, when it reboot the system after installation, the same problem happens again. It will boot up till windows logo and reboots again. I press F8 and disable the option to reboot system on failure and ends up with same blue screen info as top.

I have a feeling its HDD failure but there's some impt info i would like to salvage. Pls advise any help.

Solve : Removing unwanted windows programs?

Answer»

Hi guys,
Running XP, SP3.
I'm just having a nose around on my system, and clearing out any unwanted files and folders.
When l go into the add/remove programs option there are THREE ENTRIES, with no sizes shown, and l don't know whether to delete them or not. I also haven't a clue as to what they are.......
Microsoft COMPRESSION client pack 1.0 for windows xp
Microsoft user-mode driver framework feature pack 1.0
Microsoft visual c++ 2005 redistributable
To remove or not to remove, that is the question.I don't have those 3 programs. Btw how did you get those 3 download them? or windows updates.Since these are M$ programs, I'd leave them alone. Thanks Broni, will do.
Kingpincer, l have no idea! I think they appeared when l received the update of SP3 from SP2, but don't qoute me on that. However they should all be on the MS update site.
Regards WTCI agree with him to these are ms programs so leave them alone.

Solve : "Insufficient disk space"?

Answer»

Hi, I posted something similar to this message somewhere else:

" I was trying to upload (unless it's download) my pictures from my digital camera but I got a message that read, "Insufficient disk space." I REALLY don't know what to do! I would need an explanation that explains everything really clearly, even down to where to buy any NECESSARY items. I really do not know a lot about computers, so when someone says "hard drive" to me, I don't UNDERSTAND what that means. Please help!"

I got some replies (not from this forum) that told me I needed to get an external hard drive. This is confusing for me, because I do not know where to get this or how to get this. I'm guessing a computer store, but what would I do after I get it? I wouldn't know how to continue from there. I think i was then told to back up my computer, but I don't know how to do that--to back up my computer.

One person told me that if my PC had a DVD/CD Writer, that I could archive some of my stuff on the DVDs/CDs. I also do not know what this means.

I was also told that i could update my hard drive.

Could someone explain how to backup my computer, etc etc, all the things I would need to do? I really do not know a lot about computers.Click START
Click Programs and then click Accessories
Click System Tools
Then click Disk Cleanup.

Try using that utility it will guide you through what you need to do.

How much free room do you have left on the Hard Drive?I think, if I did it correctly, that I have 6.88 GB of free space. I followed the instructions of someone else who replied to me somewhere else to get that number. 6G out of how much ? ?
I suspect it's time to do a little housekeeping...
Windows likes approx. 15% FREE space on a HDD so for example if it's a 250Gb HDD you should have a min. of 37Gb FREE...I don't know how much it's 6G out of. But I just am for certain what to do. Should I get an external hard drive? if so, what would I do after purchasing it? I meant to say I am not for certain what to do. If my computer says, "Insufficient disk space", what should I do? Right clik the drive in Explorer or My Computer and select Properties...
Report back with your findings...I think it's 6.73 GB out of 17.7 GB.

I did the disk cleanup and disk defragmenter thing. I borrowed a BOOK from the library and it says to "add memory." Is this what should be done next? Should I get a memory card???No your getting a little ahead of yourself! The information from your camera how much memory is that? Your internal hard drive is the (memory) of your computer, it stores everything you save. An external hard drive is just another way to store that memory, it's the same as the one in your computer but let's say an extra one. By all means get an external drive but it sounds like you have a lot of free space on the internal drive. When you try and import the image what exactly does it say?"The information from your camera how much memory is that?" I don't know.

"When you try and import the image what exactly does it say?" I don't know.

I don't understand enough about computers to answer those questions. But maybe to the importing the image one it says something about there being "insufficient disk space." ? That might not be what you're asking. I don't know enough to answer those questions. The blind leading the blind!

Trapani, in your computer is a device called a "hard disk". This is a thingy that stores data. Yours seems to be getting full. Or maybe not. There might be a fault somewhere. You seem to be having trouble understanding the requests for information that people are giving you. You may be better off in the long run by going to a computer repair shop and asking them to sort it all out for you.
Dias, THANK you for your advice. Thanks to everyone who replied.

Solve : Ram Dieing??

Answer»

My computer is a little old and slow(like me lol), but lately it's getting annoying. I can view text pages like those here just fine, but if the page has large pictures it slows down. If I go to ebay (or another site with pic's) each time I click on an item to view it gets slower. After I view 3 or 4 items it gets so slow that I have to get offline and restart. Disk cleanup doesn't help unless I restart. Any idea's?

Solve : How can I see the defragmentation status of user's PC?

Answer»

Dear

I am the network Administrator.

I want to see whether users of my network are defragmenting their PC in regular manner.

Is there any OPTION to track it down?

This is very urgent for me.

Please anybody help.

Regards,
talorababuAs far as I KNOW, each computer has to be checked at the computer itself. There is really no way to check this, but if u really what to defrag (pc on the network) on a regular bases. U can ALWAYS CREATE a batch/script push it thru the network telling the computers to to preform a defrag at a set time. That is true and tring to make such a one my self. But wouldnt he be able to go under the view tab and check it? Also if he is networked as is cant he be able to grab the machine and LOOK at what is occuring, which wouldnt allow the user to do anything but allow him to do what ever needed?Depending on how many PC he has, maybe. A few maybe less then 5. If they r all in the same location it would not be much of a hassle. I myself have to take care of 7 PC and not all of them r in the same location. I guess could go the computer management and check out the event log. But doing this just to check for defrag? Well I figured that he would use it for a series of things like starts scans then check them.

Solve : PC keeps restarting after xp logo?

Answer»

I'm trying 2 fix a Compaq presario5000 for a friend, but when i try 2 turn pc on as soon as the xp logo is done the pc restarts. does the same thing w/ safe mode and when i tried to restore. there has been no changes to hardware and none 2 software that i know of. was upgraded to xp pro from me any help would be much appreciated. disable the restart OPTION when system detect error.(control Panel>system>advanced>startup and recovery settings>uncheck the system restart box)
if this doesn't solve, then try to DIABLE your HDD UDMA mode, try bios settings(under primary IDE,disable UDMA mode) or safe mode, under hardware manager,IDE/ATA device.
Quote

was upgraded to xp pro from me
Clean install?I think only_lonely is on the right track here. If you are able to get into safe mode and disable the auto restart you'll be able to see the blue screen and error messages. These messages can give some insight into the problem. How can i do that if i can't get past windows logo before restarts and if i try safe mode it will restart also........You have a valid argument. D'oh!

Am I correct in assuming that you have an XP disc? You can try booting to the XP disc and performing a repair installation.I'm not sure the installation is the problem at all. Just last week my hp pavilion would boot up to the windows xp boot screen, then restart. It turned out that it was a bad hdd. It had died after 3 years of use. So maybe you have a dead HARD drive.Also- disabling system restart on system failure is an option presented at the F8 menu, if memory serves.

Paudashlake is probably right though- I will fathom a guess that the bugcheck rebooting the machine is something along the lines of a UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error.

a reformat might solve this, however- it might simply be a corrupted Filesystem, not necessarily a FAILED HD.

Solve : Lines on the Monitor?

Answer»

Hello,

Apologies in advance for any spelling or grammatical errors. I can't see half of my screen properly.

I turned my computer on today to an unpleasant surprise. Last night it was working just fine, and I SHUT it down as usual. Today, as soon as I turned it on, desktop icon graphics were replaced by FUZZY colourful blobs, and four vertical columns of monitor "static" are on the screen. Other parts of the display seem to be normal or staticy at random.

I'm not SURE if I can link images here, but this is what my screen looks like:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v654/Ooka/untitled.jpg

I tried HOOKING up a different monitor, but the problem remained (second monitor works just fine on second computer). I therefore assume that the problem is with the computer.

I'm running Windows XP, but don't know offhand the hardware SPECS for this machine. It is about 5 years old.

Any ideas on what's gone wrong here?looks like either a issue with your video driver or the video adapter itself.Might be time to buy a new video card. mite even be were the card goes into the slot its self. dont know how good it is to say get a new one. xp looks for changes in hardware but usually its pnp will that make any difference?

Solve : Computer wont connect to internet?

Answer»

The title may be misleading in that its an easy problem to fix (unconnected CABLE, firewall, etc.) Well i recently (yesterday) recovered my other laptop (Windows XP, Inspiron 1525, Dell) and now it wont acknowledge that the ethernet cord that runs to my modem is in its ethernet port. I completely deleted everything off of my old laptop and reinstalled the recovery disc that came with it along with the driver discs. Now it won't play sound either but i fixed that on another COMPUTER i did this to by just downloading a device driver scanner program and downloading all the ones i didnt have. The other computer was a Windows XP too, and the ethernet port still worked on it afterwards. I did the EXACT same thing. The only difference is its a desktop. Now I know its not firewalls because then when it was in the port the modem connected light would come on. (its on now while im connected with this laptop) Well it doesnt come on at all when its supposedly connected to the other laptop.I know its not a cable loose or whatever because it will connect with this comp and not that one so the only difference is the computers. I sometimes can't connect to the internet, but what I do is turn off my computer, then turn off my powerbar for about 10 seconds. When I turn my computer back on (after turning the powerbar on) I usually get the internet. My DLink router is new, but it gets a bit glitchy...Nope but thanks for trying... if it helps theres a little orange light on the ethernet port that USED to come on when the ethernet cord was plugged in but now it doesnt. It's as if nothing is plugged in pretty much :S. Quote from: Vitalius on April 16, 2009, 04:11:31 PM

Try wiggling it around a bit (not to viciously though!)Nope :S. The ONLY thing that changed between yesterday and today is that i recovered it. No one else has touched it involving the internet, and the difference between yesterday and today is it worked and now it doesn't. So the problem must have to do with software. Thanks though.Have you got any errors showing up in Device Manager.............Probably XD. Could you direct me to the device manager. I rarely go there so i tend to forget .Yes i do :S. It says "Other devices" and has a yellow question marmark beside 3 Base System Devices a ethernet controller (what i am wanting :S) a Network Controller a PCI device a SM Bus controller (no wonder 2 of my USB's dont work XD) and 2 Video Controller's and 1 of them is VGA compatible . Hope that helps.Try update the drivers of each device....if that doesn't work, uninstall and reinstall (reboot) the device.

http://www.zdnetasia.com/techguide/windows/0,39044904,62039851,00.htmHmm well thanks, but I eventually found a network driver so it could get on the internet (it was the driver). Once i could do that i just window updated it to current and now everything works fine... except the sound. It says that there is a problem with my sound device so it cant play some videos but it will play others, AND in my Device Manager there are 6 "Other" Devices (has a yellow question mark beside them). There are 3 BAS System Devices... what the heck are those? a Network Controller ... not sure but i dont think i need it anymore. and the 2 Video Controllers i mentioned b4. :S Is there anywhere i can download these drivers because i have already fully updated it with windows update. Sorry if i repeat myself i have had a long day. Oh and what could the Base System Devices be?Apparently the 3 Base System Devices entries are related to the card reader.( Googled 3 Base System Devices + Dell1525)....
Reference is also made to CHIPSET drivers.

Here's a list of necessary drivers, but I'm sure if you go to the Dell site they'll have them too.........http://www.folkdiaries.com/2009/01/dell-inspiron-1525-windows-xp-drivers-download/

Solve : About MS Word....?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
I'm using MS Word from MS Office 2000 (I really don't want to upgrade - this version works just fine for me) and I have a dilemna.
I'm writing a novel, and using MS Word, but I've FOUND out that a DOCUMENT in Word can only be about 225 pages long. So what I've done is to break down my story into sections, each one saved as a different document. My intent is to print them out, and place them in a binder. But I have the pages numbered, and so after I print out section 1, which contains pages 1-200, I then print out section 2, which is supposed to start at page 201. But since this section is a whole NEW document, the numbering actually begins at page 1.
Is there a WAY to "trick" MS Word so that I can change the way it numbers things, so I can have it numbered correctly?
Any advice on this would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,

SteveLook under section 4 on THIS page, and see if that helpsYes.

Solve : format of drive c: for clean install of Windows XP home edition?

Answer»

Was trying to format my c:\ drive to do a clean install of my windows XP home edition Went to the command prompt and typed in Format c: and this came up.
Format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.Format may run if this volume is dismounted FIRST. All open handles to this volume would then be invalid.
Would you like to FORCE a dismount on this volume (y/n)
When I press the y for yes this comes up.

Cannot lock the drive, the volume is still in use.
Is there anyway to get around all of this and do a format of my hardrive? Those warnings are for a reason. Once you do that, the system is gone.
The proper way is to SET you PC to boot from the CD. When it does you get some kind of message, DEPENDING on what kind of install CD you have.
Have you already made a backup of any data you want?
In the case of the standard version of the XP install CD, there is the OPTION of instantiation without destroying your documents. Otherwise, doing a format and install destroys all data on the selected partition.
What some do is to use a partition manager to create another partition, format it. Then copy documents to the new partition. Then formatg only the system partition and install. You cannot format C: from within C:...nor any other drive/partition from itself...
Use the CD as suggested.

Solve : please help...usb issues?

Answer»

okay. so a few days ago all my usb ports decided to stop working. i try plugging my phone, my ipod, whatever into all my usb ports and they will CHARGE, but the computer WONT recognize them. they dont show up in my computer, or the device manager. any ideas? Did you make any hardware or software changes before this started?

Can you give some more INFO about the computer? What operating system? How many usb ports? Laptop or desktop? What's the brand and model of the computer? And, have you TRIED restarting? #1 problem solver...

Since they are charging, the USB device is connected, but, the port itself may be busy for some odd reason that makes no SENSE at all. Actually shutting down your computer, not just restarting, might be able to fix this problem.

Solve : Please Help: freezing every 4 seconds for about 4-5 seconds at a time.....?

Answer»

My computer occasionally freezes for about 4-5 seconds in 4 second intervals; the cursor will not move during FREEZE and all audio/video loops itself during these freezes. This typically seems to happen when I am viewing streaming content on the web. I typically will have a window open while I am working in another program such as Photoshop or Maya 2008. I have the most up to date graphics card driver and I downloaded the latest flash player. Sometimes I will be working on unrelated stuff offline and the freezing will kick in randomly even if I haven't even been online for that session. Other things I notice are on occasional cold days when I boot up my computer the fan inside sounds louder than usuall until windows has loaded and then it quiets down again.

I have Kaspersky Anti-virus 2009 and the latest Spybot SEARCH and Destroy, both fully updated. I get tracking cookies to pop up in Spybot S&D and I promptly REMOVE them and no viruses or trojans show up in my Kaspersky full scan logs, just some vunerabilities from old program files and such that I kept after upgrading to a new mother board and cpu. I took my old C: and put in a folder called "Old System" and put it on my second hard drive E:. Windows got a fresh re-install and I began installing my programs over again into C: after the upgrade. Keep in mind that the mobo, cpu, and windows install was all professionally done by a shop that built my computer to begin with. Kaspersky says no active threats and that my computer is protected.....yet still after a reboot after running Spybot and a sweep with Kaspersky this will still happen.

Before spending the money and time (I really need my machine working as I am in a 3D graphics program at school) at this shop I was wondering if anything stands out as a red flag that might be contributing to these freezing problems. THANK YOU VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE!

Here are some specs to help out:

Is the above while computer idle?
How old is the computer?
Ever cleaned inside? The computer was initially built 3 years ago, I just got the mobo and cpu upgraded about a month ago. I Myself have never cleaned the inside of it because the shop puts a little foil tab on the case where you would open it that says "if tab is broken or removed warranty becomes void". I ASSUMED that they take a can of air to dust it out when they put in a new mobo. When I had the graphics card put in about 4 months ago I asked if there would be overheat issues and they assured me it shouldnt be a problem.

As for the 41C Core temp the only thing I had open was explorer and Speedfan as I was typing out this message. If it's still under warranty, you should take it back to them. They should fix it for free.LOL right as I was about to reply the freezing began (I had youtube open in another window ).

It is not under warranty anymore. In the past when I thought about cleaning it I was deterred by the sticker and forgot about it after the warranty had expired. Should I call them to ask them if they had dusted it during the mobo install?

BTW I am trying to avoid going to the shop as I need my computer now and they have a slow turnaround sometimes because there are only 3 of them in a tiny shop that gets a lot of business..... Pull the side off it and check to see if they cleaned it out........pets and carpets will make a mess inside a PC.......make sure the the fan(s) are running.......make sure the heatsink is flush to the motherboard.........memory properly seated.....if all else fails swap in a known good PS.Thanks, will do. So apparently this seems like an overheat issue? By PS do you mean power supply? Are there any other red flags? Then, leave the case open, turn house fan on, blowing toward open case, and see, if the freezing will still occur. Solve : Need to install 32-bit XP virtual machine over 64-bit Vista?

Answer»

Just checking to see if there are any problems I might encounter or things i should know. Can you still buy a license? How much if you happen to know.

I have to install a couple of custom .net programs that won't work on 64-bit.

Using VMWARE by the way. Technically, you are required to purchase a second Microsoft WINDOWS license before you run it on a virtual PC.

Now, since you obviously have a PC with Windows already, and since your obviously not a business, and since its not you installing Windows on a SEPARATE physical machine:
If you have an older CD, before Windows Genuine Advantage, you can use that and not have serious license issues. Just dont install any Windows updates... disable them completely. Preferably, if you can, dont even let the VPC connect to the internet.

I don't object to buying an XP license. I never thought about my old xp pro disk. I need to connect to the internet though. The APP uses the internet.

Solve : Computer restarts during xp installation?

Answer»

Hi. I recently had to formate my entire laptop.

Duel booted vista and xp so am trying to do it again

I have done this a number times before in exactly the same way on the same machine and with the same cds with no problems

but now its not working

I have vista installed fine. i have 107gb unallocated space. i run xp (burned copy which has worked perfectly before) it goes to the bluescreen for formatting options ect. i do a full ntfs format on the unpartitioned space

restart to get to the installation of xp. (the screen with the new features and things)

then it restarts

no warning, no error message just a restart

and does this every time and roughly the same time.

Any suggestions?

Its worked before

Start over and INSTALL XP first...
Probably how it was done successfully the first time.I really dont want to since all my programs are installed on the vista partition.

and the way it was done the first couple of times was vista first then xp

it may be a bad sector in the hdd ill check nowPario is right.
Order of installation matters.
XP and Vista and NOT equal systems with mutual knowledge of co-existence.
XP evolved first, VISTA evolved later.
XP did not know VISTA was coming.
VISTA expects XP to be there.

You install XP first. Vista next. Always. Vista mangoes the dual boot process. Yes, even if XP is on the first partition, VISTA runs the show.

After you get it fixed. use a suitable tool to make a image of the dual installation and keep it in a safe place.I have done this many times before and i have always had vista installed first and it has always worked. I would like to know whats causing the xp installation to fail not how to dual boot.

But to put it to the test i hid vistas partition and tried again to no avail. now i just have to figure out how to make vistas partition active again without having to completely reinstall

any ideas?

thanks for the help so farYou are so persistent!
Did you read this:
Quote

you'll no doubt be shocked to find there's no option to start Vista when you reboot. And while you can still see all your files in Windows Explorer, there's no way to load anything but the older operating system because XP has overwritten Vista's boot loader.
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=178390

Read the whole post and the replies.

Like the man said. 'It's Déjà vu all over again.'
Who said that?no..... cause you can repair your boot files with the vista recovery cd.

then back into vista you use easybcd to create a boot MANAGER on startup

not to sound ungratefull but the dual booting really isnt the problem as i have used exactly the same precdedure before and got it to work

im just wondering now if there is anything to solve this thing with xp. it wont install

i'd hazard a guess and say this would happen even if vista wasnt installed.

oh and i CHECKED the partition i made for xp for errors and there are none.

ps.. getting the vista partition to become active againw as a pain in the behind but got there eventually! :-)

I think i'll just pass on this ONE as i've seen too many "it can be done" stories this Month...its not so much it can be done as it HAS been done.

right lets imagine i didnt have vista installed. what do you reckon the cause could be?Patio, you told him the correct answer.

He wants to prove he can do it again. He does not understand he forgot a step. He has to return to the original state of things.
Western thinking is that you can always duplicate a scenario.
Bur that tends to cause people to pass over details they think are not relevant.

Vista and some of its components were not designed so that you can just install and delete, reformat and re install an older system many times.

Now if he starts with a brand new PC, and brand new Hard Drive, a brand new copy of Vista and a good copy of XP, he may be able to install Vista first and then install XP. Once. If the XP partition gets damaged, Vista may let him reformat the partition. But when he installs XP, Vista will disappear.

He just not get it.

Once you have Vista and XP together, you have to make an image of the dual-install. Unless you like problems. You have to have some method to get back to the original state where things worked. Xp can not do that for you. It does not know what Vista needs, unless Vista let some information.

Or, the sane method is to use a hardware method. Use two of three HDDs and put them is swap trays to the Operating systems will not fight.

Better yet, two computers and a Gigabit Ethernet.

I give up!
tbh i dont get why its not working.

Ive follwed the same tutorial i did just to make sure i didnt forget a step

its a fresh install of both programs. the same discs

the same size of partition

none of the hardware has changed

and you can recreate a scenario if every variable is the same

so there is an unseen vaiable that has nothing to do with the process of installing that is conflicting with xp's install and i am asking if anyone has any suggestions to what that unseen variable might be?

now if that isnt a detailed question that explains that EVERYTHING is EXACTLY the same as when i did it the first time in terms of hardware and general setup then i give up

if anyone knows why xp wont instal (ignoring vista being there can they please say

orginally i though ti could be the cpu overheating but it runs fin on vista

i thought the hdd had bad sectors. i ran checks it doesnt

there must be something im missing but please dont insult my intelligence by suggesting i missed a step in a very simple procedure.got it working

turns out there was a hefy scratch on both discs and the partition size wasnt quite big enough

but its possible to do yet again :-p

Solve : 1st time poster, Help re: Laptop error?

Answer»

So I've had a HP laptop for a few years now, and have had no problems to speak of during this time.

I was on the computer last night after WORK, and about 20 minutes into reading the MB, my pc froze. I attempted to wait it out, but it didn't un-freeze. I then did a hard reboot.

Now my computer won't load Windows and I'm WORRIED that I'll have to re-install it... which will cause me to lose all my school work, songs I've written, and the book I'm working on. The school I can re-do, and the music I have memorized. The book though, the book is my aspired career.

The message I receive on my laptop is as follows:

Windows Boot Manager

Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer.

This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by faulty HARDWARE such as a hard drive or CD-ROM drive that is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer.

If you continue to receive this error message, contact the hardware manufacturer.

File: \Windows\system32\winload.exe
Status: 0xc00000e9
Info: An unexpected I/o error has occurred.Since data recovery should be the first PRIORITY grab ONE of these:

2.5" Laptop to IDE cable (available at any PC shop)

This will enable you to hook up the laptop drive in any working Desktop machine and copy/burn your data...

Then to attempt a fix on the laptop insert your XP CD and power up...it should boot to the CD.
In the first option window press R to load the Recovery Console...it takes a bit to load...
Once at the command prompt type fixboot and hit Enter.
Remove the CD and re-boot.

If this does not do it repeat the above procedure except this time at the command prompt type fixmbr and hit Enter.
Again remove the CD and re-boot.

Best of Luck.

Unfortunately not everybody is autistic, so we can't infer meaning from broken sentences and grammatically AMBIGUOUS statements.

I bet this place has more proportionately than the general population
probably.

I just had to add the link, too. Sir, macdad- used the command once. Which was the key word.

Thanking you,

Sir, my question is as clear as crystal. If you know English you will UNDERSTAND,otherwise never.

Excuse me If I hart you anyway.

Apparently you don't know English very well or you don't know how to double check your spelling.

I think you wanted to SAY "Excuse me if I HURT you in any way."spdCHF,

We all are very helpful and friendly to help with problems. But all BC and Dias wanted was just a simple, to the point question. And don't blame Carbon, BC, and Dias; their helpful as well(and actually more EXPERIENCED). But relating to what Carbon said that it can't be done, I sometimes say no to alot of requests regarding batch scripts. Since Batch can't do a lot of "Magical" actions.

Also creating multiple accounts all requesting assistance with similar malicious-related activities tends to beckon at least a little malice. Quote from: macdad- on April 15, 2009, 06:18:47 AM

Solve : add/deleting programs... *Windows Installer* error??

Answer»

Okay, I have a EVEREX GA32 computer which I'm running WINDOWS XP on. I was given this computer from my father and I'm trying to delete a lot of things which are no longer in or on the computer. Now here's the problem, every time I TRY and delete something I KEEP getting this error message that reads, "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode (which i'm not) or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed". So here i am. What do i do? Is it as easy as re-installing *Windows Installer*? What is that anyhow??

Thanks again,
-MichelleIs this with uninstalling one particular program, or any program?Hi Michelle, have a look at this

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

edit : Maybe this is not for you upon reviewthank you both. and Yes, with any program (haven't tried one's which i Don't want to delete) but I've tried many programs not just a few. and YES i have gone to that site and done all the downloading but it still SAYS the same thing. Go Start>Run, type in:
services.msc
Click OK.

See, if Windows Installer service is running, and set to automatic start. You could also try reinstalling Windows Installer:

Solve : Small Business Server - Companyweb?

Answer»

First, I'd like to thank you all for your site! Awesome reads!
The skinny:
Sm company running SBS 2003r2 with all updates
4 nodes running xp sp3
All have typical setups (running the ConnectComputer...etc.) I did the normal setup on the server as well (running the wizards)
I'm not certified, but probably certifiable. I'm relatively new to SBS and servers in general.

Here's my problem: The network and all computers working great. Then, last Thursday, one user can log into the domain, but when she WANTS to get to the "companyweb" or other "server" sites, it is requesting she log in. Once, she does, it's all fine. But everytime she opens the "companyweb" it will request her to log in. She can surf the www, but not the company site.

This had HAPPENED once before and because the user had let his password expire, and I reset password. It WORKED

I checked to see if she is allowed to be in the website, she is.

This time, it's not working and I'm at my wits end. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

All the best,
BrianDid you already read the basic information?

Recently Microsoft has went a number of security updates.
User Log-In is one of the issues. Thanks for the quick response Geek.

Yes, I've read that and I don't know how many kb's. Still, to no avail.

I'm searching for the recent updates for that user issue. I thought the nodes were all updated.

Any other ideas?I've discovered that the user can log into any other machine and be able to access the "companyweb" with her user id; however, at her computer it's not the case.

I did discover that she had admin rights and since had cut that off. I've checked her passwords in the control panel | Users Accounts |Manage Passwords and there are no passwords in there that are saved.

I'm at a loss and do appreciate any wisdom on this matter.
The only thing I would try is to trun on the built-in administrator account, log into that account and see if the problem is present on that account. Or maybe try to create a new account with the same level and try it. Bear in mind that to propagate a new account in the system be a hassles. but with my limited experience with Windows, that is what I would try.
May be you should try some other forums. But too many of them are after you money. I would suggest www.annoyances.og and go into the 2003 forum and PUT a questoin there.
Thanks Geek-9
I will try what you said with both instances. I really am liking the quizzes here! awesome to see people help each other!
Thanks again

Solve : Blue Screen / Laptop Camera?

Answer»

I have an Acer Aspire 5672WLMi laptop and it has a built-in OrbiCam, EVERY once in a while I hear a sound as if I was plugging/unplugging an USB device, sometimes it does that twice and then stops but there's times, like a few mins ago, that it goes crazy and I get a Blue Screen.
The message I get is "File lv321.sys has caused an error. Page fault in non paged AREA" and makes me restart.
After I do that, Microsoft Error Reporting tells me that I should update the drivers although I already did that or to unplug the camera, which is impossible since it's built in.

I have searched on google but couldn't find much information except perhaps the wires that connect the camera might be loose/damaged and that's what causing it.

I have disabled it on the Device manager but it won't solve anything.
Is there a WAY to completely disable the camera port?
What can I do to fix it?

No, the laptop is almost 2 years old. That model # is not user friendly when it comes to dis-assembly or PUTTING it back together...
I wish you Luck...I'm no expert mate but rather than wish you good luck.. I assume this camera is important to you? YEAH? Have you considered another camera? Have you got the driver cd for the camera??A new camera me thinks.. Quote from: Mulreay on April 14, 2009, 04:58:18 PM

No, I don't care about the camera too much really since I rarely use it.
The drivers are up to date but it doesn't seem that's the problem, I'm almost 100% sure it's a hardware problem, probably the wires.

Disabling the camera on Device Manager won't fix it, so the only solution I can think of is completely disabling that USB port but I have no idea how to do that and it can't be unplugged as it's built-in.

It's a laptop...pay attention.Halp!

Laptops are generally not designed to be user-worked on...however if it's out of warranty try visiting ACER's site for dissassembly info...

Solve : Won't go through POST (I think)?

Answer»

Hello I feel I have a unique problem. My computer when it starts won't automatically boot my Recovery CD. I have done it before (on different computers) so i know whats supposed to happen. Well I have read online that I should try going to my BIOS and change something or other to where it will boot it. (Can't remember exactly sorry.) I am using another laptop (the computer im working on is one too.) to get on the internet and figure it out. The computers specs are: WINDOWS XP Home Edition Dell Inspiron 1525 Service pack 3 (I am installing 2 because that's the CD i have.) I have tried getting to the BIOS but it won't go to the screen where it says (insert key here) to go to setup. It's like it skips the POST PHASE or whatever. I have Recovery console on it. The reason I am recovering it is because it's my mom's and for some reason or another it is going really slow and freezing all the time so she asked me to do it so it would be fast again. If there's any more INFO u might want to know or need about the computer I will find it out. In the beginning it would still start up fine. It booted really fast, but I deleted all the partitions except C: local DRIVE because i wanted it to be just like new :S. Now it says "Windows Could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\system32\hal.dll. What I want to know is if there is a way to still boot the CD, or get to the BIOS (the screen won't come up remember) OR should we just send it to Microsoft because now its (insert word that also means messed up here). When you first turn the computer on tap F2 repeatedly before windows loads. Can you get into setup now?Dude... thanks it worked. :S now what do i do to get the CD to boot next time i reset it?Advance options in Setup...boot sequence/order...it should be set to
1)Floppy
2)CDROM or DVDROM
3)HDD

after making the changes press F10 to save changes and exit.
The machine will now re-boot.Look for Boot order or Boot sequence or it might just say Boot. Use the arrow keys to navigate though BIOS. Now set the CD drive as the first boot device and then insert your disk. You may need to use the plus and minus keys to move your CD drive up in the boot order. Now exit setup and SAVE CHANGES (F10).Thanks you guys are life savers. It worked. From now on if I need help I'm coming here.
