Solve : Unable to view files and folders on my C:/ Drive?

Answer»

Hello. My system has been very slow lately and I wanted to move some files from my C: and D: drives to my external drive to free up some space. The problem I am facing is I am unable to see the files and folders that used to be on my C: Drive. When I click on C: Drive, a message pops up stating that C: is not formatted. I know formatting C: drive will wipe out all my files so I am hoping someone out there has another solution. Also, when I right-click C: Drive, click Properties and check the Capacity, it is SHOWING 0 Bytes. There should be about 12 GB. Also in Properties, when I click on Tools and try to check the volume, nothing happens, when I try to Defrag, a message states that it cannot run this type of volume and when I try to click C: from the command line, the following message 'The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted' appears. I have ran out of options. Please help. Thanks in advance for your assistance.Run diagnostics on C

Response to KingPincer: Yes, I am able to view everything on D: Drive.

I have another issue. While trying to make room on my D: Drive, I compressed the drive and now my system is even slower. Is there any way I can decompress D: Drive so that it goes back to how it was?

Solve : Adobe Flash 10?

Answer»

I'm new to this site & appreciate the opportunity to receive some help.  I'm a Windows XP user which came pre-installed on my Dell computer which is about 5 years old & has given me no problems.  Really enjoy my PC!  I catch some of the American Idol performances on youtube 'cause my husband hates the show.  But lately I can't access the videos & am told I either have Java Script turned off or NEED to download the latest version of Adobe Flash 10.  I go through the steps to no avail.  Done it a dozen times.  Nothing.  I get to the part where it says I should be seeing a movie.  No movie.  I shut the PC off, restart, no Adobe 10.  Can't find help at the Adobe Flash website.  Any suggestions?  I'll warn you in advance the anwers need to be as simple as possible.what browser are you using? (Firefox? IE? Something else?)Open Internet Explorer, click on Tools at the top right corner, click Manage Add on's..Then check to see if Java is enabled

You could also try downloading the Adobe 10 Standalone INSTALLER.....

Just download it to your desktop and install it from your desktop..

I suppose Java has nothing to do with it, however she did mention it, so why not give a heads up for future reference sorry, I think I only posted the link to install the active x controll...

hold for a moment please...

OK, navigate to this thread and locate the Standalone provided

Woah, wait a second. Java is NOT JavaScript. Completely different. Java is a programming language, used to create Java applets and small applications like chat interfaces etc. for websites. JavaScript is used to dynamically transform websites with animated content.Chaps, it may be helpful to know that I have encountered many instances of the Flash 10 plugin failing to install properly.  In each case the solution has been to uninstall completely before re-installing. Java is developed by sun microsystems. Javascript implemented by the netscape and mozilla guys. Big difference. And neither of them is relevant to this problem.  The error message is MISLEADING. Quote from: kpac on May 27, 2009, 03:44:26 AM

thanks for making that distinction for me  You may fail to install an executable if only your husband is an administrator
A user cannot do an administrator's job.
I have a related thought in mind - but I don't want to get flamed ! ! !

You may need to have him install it for you, or to give you admin rights.

FLASH has vulnerabilities.

A few months ago it was so bad that FLASH 10 was released.

I decided to MINIMIZE risk

I un-installed all the adobe - macromedia rubbish - every wretched bit of the stuff.

To then display FLASH on either I.E. or Firefox would have required separate downloads by both browsers which would automatically get the relevant (and different) executables.

I chose to contaminate my hard drive with only ONE download;
the "safe" NON-'Active X' version used by the safe browser Firefox.

An even more important reason is that now I.E. has lost Flash 9, my daughter has to switch over to Firefox if she wants to see Flash.  I am sure she will yield if I apply sufficient pressure  ! ! !

By adding the Active X version for I.E. I would have gained more vulnerabilities because Active X is bad news, and I.E. is even worse.

Solve : Is it safe to charge a notebook with different adapter??

Answer»

i've a old adapter which is no longer use. i plan to use the old adapter to CHARGE my new notebook at home, and new adapter to charge notebook at work. so i don't have to carry the adapter between work and home.

1. old laptop hp omnibook:
adapter:
     input 100-240v    1.8A      50/60Hz
     output 19V - 3.16A     polarity  [email protected]+
back of the notebook:
     input 19V - 3.16-3.30A             [email protected]+

2. new notebook asus:
adapter:
     input 100-240v     1.5A    50/60Hz
     output 19V - 3.42A          [email protected]+
back of the notebook:
     input  19V - 3.42A  65W

can anyone confirm that it is safe to do so.You can probably get away with this.  The current variation is so slight that I suspect no damage would be done.  Your new laptop may potentially overdraw current on the old adapter but the worst I suspect that will happen is that the old adapter's life will END a little earlier than it might otherwise have done. doing so, i would not burn anything right? i don't WANT the battery explode or the motherboard smoke.
if the only possible effect is that  the life of the old adapter is shortened, then i can take it as long as the new notebook not smoking. You'd only see effects like that if the adapter was delivering too much current then the laptop can handle. in this case the adapter doesn't even meet the laptops requirement, so the laptop will be drawing a little bit more power.

Sometimes when the laptop detects this circumstance it REFUSES to charge the battery while it's still on, but that's the only possible side effect I could see on the laptop.

The adapter on the other hand, as Rob said, will have a reduced life, at best.

Solve : Actually Not Windows But Office - MS Access more particularly.?

Answer»
Hi to  administrator and all,

I had created a program (FORM viewing and querying) in MS access 2000. It works fine with Windows 98. But when I run it under Windows XP (SP-2), I get the message that TWO  .ocx files (Audio Control.ocx and  mscomct2.ocx ver 2.0) are missing and have to be fixed before I can proceed. The message is actually LIKE this :

"your microsoft access contains a missing or broken reference to file Audio Control.ocx ver 2.0 (and mscomct2.ocx ver 2.0 in the next screen) and has to be fixed before proceding. "

So as advised in the help, when I open reference under VB editor, I find the following

"MISSING Microsoft Windows Common Controls - 2.6.0 (SP4)"

What am I supposed to do ?

-------  Also, one of the subreports does not intimate any information even though a good amount of information is available in the database on which the subreport is based (even in Windows 98 under MSoffice 2000).

Please advise

Thanks

RK Rao
You can try to copy the 2 files into the system32 folder on the XP MACHINES. I have done that in the past with good luck.

Dear Mr. Spoiler (?),

I shall try the same tomorrow (since it is late now) and later intimate on this post, whether the PROBLEM was resolved.

Meanwhile, my INTERIM thanks to you  for your immediate (rather instant) reply.

Thanks again.

If I highlight the songs, right click and select play, Media Player BOOTS up and plays happily.

Media Player is the default player, both XP and MP11 are up to date

I miss my little "play all" button, any help greatly appreciated.

Solve : hard drive full, next day less full?

Answer»

Hi, I have a question about what XP might do in the event that the C: drive gets absolutely maxed out.

For a while now I've just been dumping crap onto my 80GB Seagate C: drive, and a few days ago I realized that there was less than 1GB of space left.  I planned on reformatting this drive in the next week or so, so I didn't pay much attention.

Then last night it was, I kid you not, down to 38.5MB of free space.  I was in the midst of downloading the new Ubuntu release (to a different drive, because I knew I didn't have the space for it on C:) when I went to bed.  However, when I woke up this morning, I discovered that I had also been downloading two other files (which had been in progress for several days, hence my having forgotten about them), which WERE going to C:, and the C: drive suddenly had 1.04GB of free space.

What is XP's protocol when a hard drive reaches ABSOLUTE max capacity?  I'm hoping that it hasn't deleted anything that I'm attached to, but I HONESTLY don't know where to start looking first.

thanks in advance for your time and any insight you can offer
RojerNormally you get a popup on the screen saying your drive is full. I have seen computers reboot when the drive is full.

in windows xp, delete the old system restore files if you got those, disk cleanup can do it for you. System restore point take up good space especially if you don't need all the old ones.XP will not randomly delete things just because the drive is getting close to being full...
That being SAID i'm frankly suprised the machine even runs at all...
Normal headroom of free space is around 15%.
On an 80G drive this would be approx. 12G.Have you got Volume Shadow Copies enabled?  Occasionaly when the VSS service barfs it will release disk space.

As Pat is indicating, lots of things break as you approach capacity.  Various services stop logging and die, internet browsing goes haywire, the temporary files needed by Word and Outlook can no longer be created, resulting in weird error messages, etc, etc. Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on May 26, 2009, 02:44:00 PM

when you are no longer able to defragment your pc without the windows defragmenter complaining that your pc is almost out of space, you need to get something done about it. And windows won't just randomly delete files. A malware or virus can but not the OPERATING system unless you have told it to in something like a system TASK associated with a program.Computer with very low hard disk free space won't boot at all one day. wow, dude, that was really rude. He asked for help here and he will get help here.System Restore does not erase files or programs except those created or installed after the chosen restore date. And even then you only lose the function of the programs.  ( the .exe files )

For example, If you installed  the Cubase Program on 05/20/2009.  And then you restored the computer to 05/05/09. You must reinstall the Cubase program.   The files might still be on the HDD.  Or you may copy the files back to the HDD from the USB device.  The songs will play again after you reinstall the Cubase Program. Program files Cubase.exe ( executables ) will copy and then not EXECUTE.  Programs must be reinstalled:

Solve : Computer Memory and Games?

Answer»

I've been TRYING to install a GAME on my computer, but my computer doesn't have enough memory. I tried deleting files that took up space and it hardly made a dent. I was wondering if there was some way to install the game on a jump drive or floppy disk and use that to play it on my computer? Or could copy the game from one computer and play it on mine without having to install it? If both of those are impossible to do could someone help me free up space? Deleting old system restore points is known to increase disk space, and Windows computers require at least 15% disk space to function propery... A floppy disk is virtually out of the question, and maybe FLASH/jump drives...depending on the game size, a flash drive won't be able to handle it.

Solve : Mouse and Keyboard won't work at Welcome screen?

Answer»

I have a few hard drives that are all running on xp. When I hook them up (separately) to my computer they WORK fine with the exception of one. It will load but at the welcome screen the mouse and keyboard won't respond. Keyboard and mouse are good cause they work fine with the other hard drives. I have tried recovery console and ran fixboot and fixmbr with no changes but like I said it does load it's just the mouse and keyboard won't respond. I have done chkdsk and copied Ntldr and Ntdetect.com with no results. Is there something  that I am overlooking. What else can I try?Are the keyboard and mouse USB?

When you state you have a few hard drives be specific...
Is there an OS installed on each of these drives ? ?
If not are the jumpers set properly on each drive ? ?
The drive with Windows should be jumpered master...all others if not having an OS should be slave drives.

MB==============================Master======Slave.Mouse and keyboard are not usb. When I connect the hard drives they are not connected at the same time. I had tried each one on my SYSTEM to see if it was the mouse and keyboard or if it was something else. Yes they all have xp sp2 installed. Was XP installed on all of them when they were connected to this specific machine ? ?
If not they will not boot properly and may be the cause of the issues...

However they can still be hooked up as slave drives to retrieve the data and format for use...The drive that is giving me problems was not connected to this machine when installed. However it still gives me the same issue when I start it on the machine that was used for it's install. Sorry if I might sound confusing I am not that great at explaining things. What exactly are your goals for this drive ? ?
I don't think you will succeed in getting it to boot on another machine.

However Windows does NOT need to run on it for you to retrieve the data if that is what you are after...
Slave Drive InfoI want to be able to log on to Windows. I have two computers. Computer one has one hard drive which is the one that the mouse and keyboard won't do anything when it gets to the welcome screen. XP was installed on this drive with computer one. Computer two has two hard drives both work fine. Both drives had XP installed with computer two(SECOND drive was added for more storage). I tried connecting drive one(from computer one) to computer two to see if the problem was with the drive or with the computer. When I connected drive one(by itself) to computer two it did the same thing and loads to the welcome screen with the mouse and keyboard not responding. I hope that makes a little more sense. The reason your mouse and keyboard aren't working is because one computer used one set of keyboard and mouse and the other used another set.  Thus they each have different drivers installed your computer can read and run windows of your one hardrive but i doesn't have the drivers on that hdd for your mouse and keyboard.  You either need to put the native drive as master and the other drive as slave or you need to use a ENCLOSURE to allow your hardrive to act as an external harddrive.Actually I am using the same mouse and keyboard from computer one. I have also tried others(usb and ps\2) but have come up with the same results. Computer one and computer two are practically identical the only difference is one processor is 2ghz and two is a 1ghz. Both processors are Pentium 4. Quote from: Lumpy Hippo on May 26, 2009, 08:57:25 PM

This is unlikely the issue as XP will load generic drivers for the keyboard and mouse...

jenn i'd suggest buying a PS2 keyboard and mouse and try it on both machines...everyone should have one. Even if they sit in the closet most of the time... Quote from: jenn8485 on May 26, 2009, 01:12:41 PM

Solve : Problem with text?

Answer»

I got a call from my sister today as she's having problem with her Windows' text display.

Text in her Windows e.g. title bar, icon, etc., and many application e.g. MS OFFICE, IE, etc. are not displayed properly, i.e. some are smaller than usual and some are larger, and with non-default font, and some appeared bold.

It is her desktop PC at work, and she uses MS Excel a lot, and she has serious problem with those pre-designed forms. When printed, all the texts are shifted in a mess i.e. out of position.

I've gone through all the display/appearance settings and language settings with her but doesn't improve much.

Since it only happens since this morning, she has tried to do a System Restore but it doesn't solve the problem. Prior to the problem, she can only recall that the system prompts her for a Windows Update which she chose to download but not installed.

She would not consider doing a Windows repair because she's not competent to do a proper system backup, with all the important company documents on her computer.

She's running Windows XP SP2.

Any idea?

Thanks.
Anyone?Did you try SETTING the Themes back to the Windows XP default theme?
Yes...I SET all related options that I can think of back to default.the only place i can think of where these settings would be CHANGED is in the advanced options under the appearance settings

i know you've tried already but go into those settings and change the menu fonts ext around see if you can change them

its a very big long shot but try restarting explorer.exe in task manager ie stop it and run a new task and run explorer

sorry i cant be much help. its a very odd problem if resetting the theme doest work

maybe a screenshot might help?

i DUNNO just thinking out loud :-p

hope i can help you get it resolved

andyHi all,

Have you tried to change the settings in the 'View' drop down box, it is located next to edit on the top of the screen.

I'm hoping that may help as a simple fix.

Solve : runonce ( on more ) !?

Answer»

To all those that have (The annoyance).   This little Gem was given to my by Sykes.

You can PREVENT IE from going to the RunOnce PAGE and cause it to go DIRECTLY to your homepage by running this registry script.

http://www.enhanceie.com/dl/NoRunOnce.reg

1. Download this file to the Desktop or any other folder that you like.
2. Double left click the audiosvr.reg file, when asked if you want to add the information to the Registry click: Yes

NOTE: Use IE to download the registry patch.

For more INFO, check out this Knowledge Base article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945385/en-us

Thanks and regards,

Sykes

Solve : Windows 7 Bug Report?

Answer»

I have found a bug with Paint in Windows 7 RC1. Because Microsoft has removes the 'SEND Feedback' feature is there any way to REPORT this bug to Microsoft.

Here is the bug:
============
When you try to use the fill TOOL to fill a shape that has been drawn with the standart brush, it does not fill completely up the shape. It leaves jagged white* edges around the edge of the filled shape.

It might just be my computer though!!! (It is a rubbish PC)

Could you also try this if you have Windows 7 and see if you have the same results.

Thanks in ADVANCE,
Cameron Gray (camerongray)you send the bug report to M$ right away... follow the instructions on this website so M$ knows to go squish it if it's not something to do with your pc being the way it is.

http://www.blogsdna.com/3349/how-to-report-bugs-send-feedback-in-windows-7-rc.htmThanks, I will send the bug report ASAP.  Quote from: camerongray on May 28, 2009, 01:03:34 PM

I'm not 100% certain, but I think this may be to do with MEMORY .... have you got a different Ram stick you can try ?

Also 512mb Ram is not really enough to run XP properly, especially XP Pro ..... 1gb or 2 gb will make things run a lot better.so how do i adjust the way it operates plse.? i mean like a new engine booster for this cpu ebay ideas like?  can i get fuel injection, double overhead cam, turbo charger, parts and what are their names does anyone know !! are we all as bright as we think (sage and upward compolsary answers please ) all other logs greatfully greeted !! If it is a DELL,

After you press power button to start,  start tapping F2 (To Open BIOS) Button and then in the BIOS window look for the option Power Management and than look for the option Load Default, highlight the option and press Enter and will ask you YES or NO select YES and SAVE and exit BIOS. Your computer may work without issues.

You may give it a try.  thanx it worked You are welcome mr tee  as are you sykes welcome

Solve : all of my icons are very tiny?

Answer»

hello, i hope someone can help me? I recently upgraded to internet explorer 8.1 and once i restarted my computer, everything works great except that all of my icons are extremely small, to the point that you cant read them. i have to guess which buttons are send, REPLY, back, delete, BLOCK, ect. is there a way to fix this? or even go back to explorer 7??well...
That makes sense, but the rest of my SCREEN is COMPLETELY fine, its just my icons that are small I played with that and no matter what I did, they were always out of proportionAre you referring to the icons within IE itself, or everywhere on your computer?just within ie itselfi have mozilla as well, and all of my icons are completely normal on that, but i personally prefer ie over mozilla lolHave you tried to go to the internet options and check the font size and everything?whats that key combination to copy the screen so i can post it on here and show you whats happening. the fonts for everything are fine except for my icons.Sherry,

Right click IE's toolbar, then select Customize, then select Large Icons...

Does this work?To do a screen shot, hit the print screen key and then open up paint and paste.
Or use a screen capture utility. You can post the image on Photo bucket, or the site of your choice. Quote from: sherrybaby on March 25, 2009, 09:36:48 AM

Solve : HELP!!.....My profile crashed and lost my pictures?

Answer»

I have windows xp and my profile crashed.  I lost my pictures, but everything else is still there.    Can anyone help me get my pictures back?sorry mate but to help ill probably need way more info

what where you doing when it crashed?

did it come up any errors before hand?

what exactly do you mean your pictures are gone? just the files or your mypictures folder?

sorry for being a bit patronising but did you check your recycle bin?

andyMy son was playing a computer game and i don't know what kind of MESSAGE came up that he clicked thru.

no pics in the recycle bin

all folders under my pictures are gone, except for the ones that people have emailed me.  all the ones i took are gone.

We had to rebuild the profilewhen you say you had to rebuild the profile doy ou mean you overwrite the user profile that your pics where on cause that would most certainly overwrite those files if you chose not to save them

can you explain exactly step by step what you did

(sorry im a bit slow tonight :-p)

andyThe computer would send us to a default hp profile. It would not save changes that we made, like wallpaper, screen saver. Just kept going to the blue hp screen each time we turned it on. Telling us the profile didnot exsist and we would use a temp profile. Last night after countless hours of SEARCHING we made a new profile. We used the search under the start button to look for files, and found nothing. We ran our norton antivirus, found no viruses. Of all the files that got lost in all of this only the pictures we took are missing. so the files that werent lost remained in ther correct folders like in my documents my videos ect?

i must adimit its a weird problem

trying revealing your hidden files and folders.

in explorer  - menu - tools- folder options -view

then click show hidden folders
also show system files (there willbe a warning pop up just click yes or ok)

then look at your my computer - documents and settings -

then see if your old profile name is there.

We looked through all the hidden files and folders. All the videos and other pictures got MOVED by the computer to c drive documentsso just to clarify...

your computer crashed.
you profile got erased
you created a new one
all the files you had in your documents ect got moved to a new folder in the root  directory of the c drive
the only files that where missing where the files you had copied from your camera to my pictures.
the pictures that where in your my pictures that where downlaoded where saved though

is that right?

if so i havent got the foggiest

sorryThat's right.

Where do we go from here?

A friend recommended Compurecovery for data recovery.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for your help.
in your documents and settings folder there may be a folder called temp

it may have some files in there

in all honesty when it comes to problems like this its alot easier to solve when im sitting infront of the computer.

its understandable that your files would be lost when your profile got deleted somehow. i stress somehow cause its odd.

but to have only a select group of files get lost while all others are saved is very odd. its even stranger that some file ssharing the same directory got saved when others didnt

i cant stress to you enough how strange this is!!!!

i would try out some file recovery programs in the off chance it might WORK. theres nothing lose really at this point

system restores unfortunately dont recover lost files just programs so thats no use.
also before you try anything else i would strongly recommend you back up your saved files now onto an external storage device.

also try run a search of all your c drive including all hidden files and all system files for anything with the same extension as your pics i.e .jpg or .bmp or what ever it is. if that doesnt show up any results then they are definately deleted and some sort of recovery software is you best bet. (quite a long SHOT though im afraid)

sorry i cant be more helpful :-(

Solve : Compressing C?

Answer»

On the properties window for my C: drive (local disk) it gives me the option of compressing it to save disk space. I have 7.69gb out of 30.5gb and I was wondering if this is a bad idea. I really would like to extend the life of my HDD without having to format it, so any disk saving ideas would be greatly apreciated.compressing may cause problem on pc's that don't SUPPORT the compressing. who knew. What computers do not support compression?compression is a feature of NTFS. It will obviously slow down disk reads/writes but wether that's noticable is a case of perception. Quote from: Helpmeh on May 28, 2009, 08:55:52 PM

Do you have a lot of games installed?
You do disk cleanup and defrag right?

Why not? Do you not have your Windows CD? Have you not backed up recently?
Can't you put some stuff on that flash drive?I used to compress "Old Files", and typically it would save less than 10 MBytes.

One day I tried, and it promised 100 MBytes improvement because I had not used it for a little while, and about one PERCENT of the files exceeded the 30 day threshold.

What it delivered was a 50 MByte degradation in the other direction, AND it took over one hour to do so.

Many of the "old files" were vital system files in which Windows File Protection takes an unhealthy INTEREST;
and because Windows does not trust Windows (and neither do I)
it mistrusted its own compression and re-validated all these system files,
and after validation it dumped duplicate copies in system32/dllcache.

INFINITELY WORSE - several files failed validation, and W.F.P. demanded a Windows CD which was never supplied - ACER pre-installed XP on my PC.

The above disasters were unleashed when I allowed Windows to choose what to compress, and it chose to deal with only one percent of the drive.  I dread to think of the results had I told it to compress the whole drive ! !

As I said, I do not trust Windows, so before "cleaning up" the PC I created a disk partition image, and I immediately recovered form disaster.

Since then I noticed that the disc partition image immediately after compressing files are a little larger than the image taken before.  This is because the new compressed file takes less disk space, but still holds the original data, and in addition holds an extra overhead of some sort of (de)compression dictionary, and my archive system applies its own compression, so the end-product image is NOT affected by the size of the files it compresses, but IS controlled by the amount of data (including the extra overheads.)

Alan

File/disk compression will not extend the life your your hard drive.

Only compress or encrypt files that you have backed up.  Introducing compression/encryption increases the difficulty of RECOVERING files in the event of HARDWARE or software failure.Personally i recommend staying away from it...
As Rob stated it can be troublesome recovering compressed files.
I'm a big fan of just simply adding more storage space.

In your case if you were to buy a larger HDD you could simply "clone" the old drive to it and be back up running in about 25 minutes with room to spare...

Solve : Nikon 6 Viewer.?

Answer»

Well, I've had good luck with this forum so far, so I'll try to see if my next problem can be solved.

I have Nikon 6 viewer when I download my pics.  It goes to a the nikon 6 app?, and I can see all my albums.  It also has a link to all the FOLDERS.  Suddenly it STOPED working.  No albums are there, they are all in my "my pictures under my documents".  They wer there before, but now I cant access them through nikon viewer.

If I delete it and reinstall it, (I have the CD), I wonder if I'll erase all my pictures.  This is what has made me reluctant to try it.

Any suggestions.

thanks
What are your pictures worth to you ?

I know nothing of Nikon, but general experience suggests that most applications would not deliberately delete files from "My Pictures" etc. were you to un-INSTALL and then re-install the application.

BUT if the pictures are already deleted, and if you would prefer to get them back,
the first thing to do is to get them back.
The more things you do, like re-installing applications, the more empty disk space is OVERWRITTEN - and your pictures are part of "empty".

If you wish to undelete/recover files, a lot of tools are available.
It is a good idea to download and install on a flash DRIVE.
It is a bad idea to install on the drive that had your pictures.

Regards
Alan
Try Recuva to get the photos back...

Most of the computer registry is held in C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\.
Some bits are also scattered around in various folders with file names such as NTuser.dat.

The computer heavily depends on these files, and prevents users, administrators, and antivirus applications from easily meddling - hence the "error opening".

I expect "error opening" for vital Windows files.  It gives no clue about presence or absence of infection.

I suspect it is possible for malware to be installed and for it to coerce Windows into protecting itself so no anti-virus can inspect it.
This is on my LIST of things to worry about when I have nothing else to do ! !

The "MIME - is OK" probably means that ESET has decided, on the basis of MIME, that this object is unable to do harm so does not need an internal scan.

Solve : Word documents saving as image files...all of a sudden?

Answer»

When saving new Word files or looking at OLD ones, all Word files are now shown in the documents files as Image files. To open, you have to select the "open with" DIALOG and select Word.

What happened? When you wanna open a new file again as Word Document File click:

Always use this option to open this type of file.

Or something LIKE this.

You can find this in Open As option when you right click on any file (Well almost any).WOW!! That was easy. TYVM!! I have no IDEA how it got started but your suggestion did the trick. Learn something new every day!Have you installed a new program for image editting?

In what program did the word files open?Nope, no new software installed except Advanced System Care and that install was done AFTER the Word/Image file fiasco.

BTW, ASC has really cleaned up the operation on the Compac Deskpro.

Solve : How can I put my System Mechanic onto another CD?

Answer»

I recently installed System Mechanic and I want to have a backup disc in case I lose the one I BOUGHT. But the problem is I'm not sure how to do so. So if anyone can help that would be sensational. You can't. Then, the best place for System Mechanic, and any other "miracle tool" is the waste basket. QUOTE from: Broni on March 23, 2009, 10:41:50 PM

the best place for System Mechanic, and any other "miracle tool" is the waste basket.

I disagree.  Althrough I maintain my PCs manually, I also have installed System Mechanic on several others for individuals that are not pc literate.  If set up properly, it does a very adequate job of keeping the system clean and running efficently.   Not one has informed me of any problems.

To the best of my knowledge copying a cd for backup is not a VIOLATION. It can usually be accomplished  by doing a disc to disc copy.it's pointless to make a backup anyway because you can DOWNLOAD it from the web (I mean from their web site).

My Aunt is paranoid about system mechanic and runs it almost everyday on the "full" setting. Of course the reason her system is SLOW is because SMSystemAnalyzer.exe is constantly running as well as it's services.

And then there is of course the "random" corrupted of installations that occurs after running it's registry tools... But goodness no, it's not System mechanics fault- it must be a virus! I better run a full system scan again!

Solve : Windows keeps rebooting, and won't stop. Corrupt system file??

Answer»

Okay, from the beginning. I have a emachines t5048 that had many viruses on it (the new win32 one for a fact) and other "fake antivirus" popup ones. The computer was slow, mcaffee and spyweeper couldn't delete the file so I took out the emachines operating system disk cd. I went through the 1st recovery mode that was supposed to create a BACK up and install a new fresh version of windows, (don't worry about any data, I backed all of it up prior to this). When the computer was done recovering, it prompted me to restart it. It kept restarting, getting to the area where the windows xp logo shows up and shows the loading bar, after that, it continues to reboot itsself... Never getting to the login or home screen with the start button. I tried a complete restore, the one that erases everything - Same problem. I cannot boot into safe mode. When I press f8 at start up and select boot to last good configuration, it gives me the option to select "windows xp media center edition". Then it tells me that windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWS/system32/config/SYSTEM that's all I have tried. I have okay computer knowledge (ish) and the computer is out of warranty. Whatcan I do??? Thanks a ton!!!

Side notes:
- I have the emachines "operating system disc with Windows XP Media Center" or so it says, the only thing I believe it does is help repair the computer
- I cannot boot into safe mode, safe mode with networking, or any safe mode at all
- The computer is out of warranty, thus no support from the company
- I cannot login or get to the start menu or screen where I can access applications, no internet access on the machine since I cannot even get it running

Any and all support is greatly appreciated! Quote

it tells me that windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWS/system32/config/SYSTEM
Means, the installation didn't go through in correct way. There are quiet a few possible reasons.
I'd start with cleaning WELL your recovery CD, and go for another reinstall.
Hard drive problem may be another reason. The recovery cd has some scratches, none look major though? What should I do now, I tried a complete recovery to no avail. Should I buy the actual windows xp cd? Should I buy a new recvery cd, or is there something else... The computer worked fine (just the slow and painful viruses) 2 days ago.Scratches can cause problem like this.
eMachine should have recovery partition, if it wasn't deleted.
Try to press Ctrl+F11, when computer starts.I pressed f11 and got to the of angel recovery screen (like EVERYTIME before - exact same options), nothing changed. How can I be sure that I actually used the recovery cd properly if I got the same recovery options without the cd? The cd says only to insert and it will prompt me for the rest... What should I do?If i SIMPLY bought a Windows XP Home CD, could I just reinstall everything? Would that work? Or are there any other options....Ctrl+F11, not F11
You could buy Windows CD, but when you use recovery CD, or partition, you don't have to worry about drivers.I held both cntrl and f11 down. It gave me 2 options. Press R for recovery options or f11 for recovery. Both led me through the same pc angel program. Both didn't do the trick (I tried the recovery with each of them). The only time I got the 1st option was when the cd was in. Otherwise only the second (f11) option appeared. The only one that mentioned a partition was the one that appeared when the cd was in (r for recovery) and that one said a partition would be used if no cd was in. Nothing new - any other options. What kind of drivers are you talking about? Well, if you reinstall Windows, using Windows CD, some drivers will be installed, but some not.
Luckily, eMachines has pretty decent web site, regarding drivers, so you should be OK.
Better and cheaper to order your Recovery Software directly from eMachines...That's true, but it's be nice to have Windows CD as well. They just may send him that if that's what he requests...

Solve : How do I encrypt my wireless signal and keep people from stealing from me?!??

Answer»

I have Qwest modem & router combo 2 Wire SSID 238 and recently I have been getting kicked off the internet. I have to un plug at night because I am sure that some one is hijacking my signal. I live close to an apartment complex so it happens a lot and although I am secured it seems that I have been hijacked daily and not necessarily by the same person. I no longer have access to my IP address or the web site through Qwest that allows me to make changes to my signal or encrypt. I know very little about these things but was told that this is my problem. It has gotten so bad that my lap top has been compromised and despite the fact that I have recovered multiple times I still can’t fix the problem… it is so frustrating. My hope is that if I can stop them from stealing from me I can recover again and fix the problem. HELP!!! How do I recover control over my IP address so that I can make changes to my wireless, and how do I ensure that my laptop is not compromised again. I need to know what steps to take in order to encrypt my signal and firewall these idiots out of my laptop! I also recently discovered that I was being used as an outside server or drone, AND that I had a massive virus… ARG! I have downloaded everything form AVG to purchasing Trend Micro and Web Root Spy KEEPER, but nothing helps! What can I do to REALLY protect myself!!?!?!?!?!?! I am really getting SICK of having to recover my laptop, as I mentioned I have had to do that now more then a dozen times. It is to the point that I cannot download my updates anymore, so I have no real security on my computer. I have been locked out of my own laptop. The hacker has disabled all of my admin ability to download ANYTHING!!!!!! GRRRR!!!! HELP!!!!!! I think I may also have ANOTHER virus because my computer is super slow and LOCKS up multiple times per day, as well as I am re directed to unknown sites and I have pop ups all day despite having a pop up blocker!!!! I am ready to loose my mind!!!! I am not kidding!  It does'nt sound like the problem is coming in through your router but a virus within your computer (trojan). You need to use anti-virus software WHILST being offline may be Nortons or even windows defender and run a full systems scan. Then I would completely remove your router software and re-install. When you re-install make sure you set a WPAK key (password) also ensure your router is set to public use and not private. In public other computers can not view or access other computers on the network. Also you mentioned this 'person' has taken your admin off, it has to be turned on, on one of your profiles or they would not have admin ability either. I'm no expert though mate so I may be wrong but what I've told you is what I know. Let me know how you get on.to set your routers settings manually do this

connect your pc via an ethernet cable if its possible

1:) rum command prompt. if you either go to run in the start menu or hit the windows key and the r key it will bring up the run command.
then type cmd and hit enter

2:) type ipconfig then hit enter

3:) not your default gateway ip. (usually something along the lines of 192.168.x.x but could well be different

4:) close cmd and run interent explorer or firefox whichever you have installed. and type in the ip at the top. no http or www. just the ip address

5:) you may be prompted for a username and password. this is either given to you in your router instruction manual or written on the BOTTOM of your router. (if you dont know it then i'm stumped :-(  )

6:) now you can access wireless settings such as your network name and you wpa or wep settings.

if its just you using the computer, try stopping the router from broadcasting your ssid (network name) that may stop the intruders.

make sure to change your passwords from their defaults!!

however if the people who got into your network new what they where doing they could have very well cahnged these passwords in which case it is possble to reset most routers with a manual button on the router some where.

hope this helps.

andyWireless is not my thing but if you have a virus I recommend Avast a free virus program that is way better than avg and spybot it is a spyware remover and it is free as well. the websites for thouse are www.avast.com and www.safernetworking.org
. Hope this helps!!!

Solve : Troublesome Formated Computer?

Answer»

Recently I formatted a seemingly hopeless computer. After downloading much software and many drivers though, I still am having problems. When running Java Script PROGRAMS for extended periods of time (from 15 minutes to an hour), the program locks up, and must be closed. Furthermore, the game Oblivion refuses to OPEN correctly. (Installed fine, and brings up the start SCREEN, but won't RUN the game. DVDs are able to be read, but freeze up the computer shortly after they start. Things seem to get more more laggy then they should at times too.
If you need more information about my computer just ask, and thanks for the help. Quote

Recently I formatted a
seemingly hopeless computer.

There is the answer. I seemed hopeless. Now you know.
My guess is dirty power supply. I don't mean dusty. But the COMPONENTS are old and it is not giving good filtered power.
Just a guess, but a decent power supply is always a good investment. And less money that a new motherboard.

Solve : Very strange problem. Please help?

Answer»

All of a sudden i am unable to load a particular website on both my COMPUTERS on my network. I have tried everything i can think of & when i connect to a different network the website loads fine. I have EVEN changed my router but this website still only loads a bit of text which takes forever & no images. It SEEMS to me that the PROBLEM resides with my ISP. But if so why would only 1 website be affected?

Please helpCan you be certain it's not the website that's having problems?

What's the URL?it works fine when i connect to a friends network on my computers & all of my friends say it loads fine.

www.dhgate.comWhat protection apps do you have ? ?
Any firewall installed ?i have disabled everything. this is happening on 2 machines wired to the router & both load the page fine when i connect them to a neighbours wireless network Quote from: patio on March 23, 2009, 02:53:39 PM

just spybot resident shield & windows firewall. Are you doing a referral business thru that site ? ?
Have you contacted your ISP to see if they have blocked it ? ? Quote

No AV??
No im not doing a referral business through that site. I will contacting my ISP shortly to see if they are blocking it but if they were blocking it surely it wouldn't load up all. After a while you get all of the text but none of the images & its really slow.

What's AV? Anti-Virus ...such as Avast NOD, AVG etc.I have AVG up-2 date. I have performed a virus scan, spyware scan, malware scan etc.It started working again this afternoon so i assumed it was fixed somehow & its not working again. What the *censored* is going on? This is crazy.See, if you can access it, using http:\\124.42.15.198hi, i tried to ping the Ip address & it timed out so i changed the DNS servers addresses on my router to open DNS & it now works. yay

[attachment deleted by admin]unfortunately i had a look at your attachements and i havent got the foggiest

i can give you the standard response to ie problems which is
get firefox. its much more secure and faster.

also PERHAPS uninstall some toolbars you dont use cause it could be conflicting with something which would cause the error

or reinstall ie7 or upgrade to the ie8 BETA. not sure what stage the beta is at. definatly beta 2. but its stable enoughYes, too many toolbars, remove some. The first error is a crash in the AVG toolbar. Remove and re-install AVG.
Internet Explorer 8 is now available as a FINISHED product - but clear up all those toolbars first. Go to CONTROL Panel  - Add/Remove Programs.

Get IE8 here; http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx

Solve : Move text?

Answer»

This is a simple question that I hope will have a simple answer. I have SELECTED text that I want to move to a folder. How would I do that?
Thank you , Iggy 777And, that text is in a file, RIGHT?   You MAY use the the copy and paste procedure:

1) After you have selected the text do a Ctrl + c ( a shortcut for copy )
Copy puts the text on the "ClipBoard"  The Clipboard is a special storage AREA in Ram.

2) Go the location where you need to move the text to.
3) Do a Ctrl + v   ( Paste ). You will need to open a text file with notepad inside the folder.  Paste the text to the file you opened with notepad. Save the file to the location folder. You will need to name the file.

p.s. The "ctrl"  key is located on the first roll to the far left
Press the Ctrl and C key at the same time for copy
Press Ctrl key and v one time only for pasteI will certainly try with the cut, copy and paste. Actually it isn't a file but info on art and I want to put that info into a folder. It is just an article.
Thank you much,  Iggy777Well, first you put it into a file. Then, you put that file in a folder.  YES, I am putting it into a file to put it in a folder.
Iggy777            Billrich, Just wanted to thank you for explaining the "Move text" to me. I appreciate your time and effort.

Solve : PC keeps freezing when installing new programs?

Answer»

Hello all,

My computer keeps freezing when I try to install new programs.
Okay I have to be honest it freezes even if I do not install new programs.

I have a HP Compaq nx9420 model.

100GB Hitachi 5m100.
Dual Core 2Gh.
1GB ram.
ATI mobility radeon x1600.
Windows XP.

The problems started a few days ago when I got a weird message from a game called Guild Wars.
When I started the game it prompted a screen and said that the game has to fix itself for some reason. The reason was not stated. Well I did let it.
During the process the computer became very slow and well it was like frozen so I shut it down.
The next day I started the game again and let it try to repair itself again. The computer was again frozen so I decided to let it run, in any case I had to go to do my internship.
When I came back later that day, I think the computer restarted itself at some point because the game was not started and I had some processes running that I normally end task.
So I decided it was time for reinstall.

My laptop does not come with Windows CD but a restore partition. I backed up some of my files and let it restore the computer to factory installation.

What a ride it has been since.

When I try to install a program the computer freezes at some point, restarts itself, but not before giving me a blue screen that flashes so fast all I can see is a bunch of memory addresses in hex.
After that it tries to load again Windows XP and bang it gives me Non-System disk or disk error.
I have to shut it down and start it again.
I decided to revert back to factory installation.
And again the same problem.

I have to be fair. I think it froze a couple of times before the first of those two latest restores. (I have restored the pc a few times before, no problems).

Things I did before the first of the two LATESTS restores.
I though that the game does not start because windows needs a clean reinstall but I did not want to do one so this is what I did before I restored:

1.I ran disk cleanup. *censored* on earth. 20GB compressed files so I let it ran for 1 night and it was only on 20% done in the morning. Well OBVIOUSLY I stopped it. By the way it ran with the laptop clossed so that I could sleep and not see the screen. (No idea if that helps in any way.)

2. Run CCleaner on files, registry and so on. (A couple of times.)

3. Disk defragment: well I tryed that. But I was watching a movie whlie it was runing and at some point: bang if I remember correctly the pc froze and restarted and I think it gave me a blue screen with some error about how windows did it to protect my system.

4. Uninstalled some programs.

5. When I was backing up the files that I wanted to save I got a lot of stupid errors when I was trying to zip my files. It kept freezing when trying to zip some of them so I had to delete those files in order for the zip to be made.
I had to shut it down a lot of times becase windows was frozen.

After the first of the two restores I ran a test on my memory, a test on my harddrive, a test on my video card. Am I missing something? Well the test on my harddrive I ran while I was sleeping so no idea what the conclusion was. It just started windows after it finished.

I think I am hearing some weird noise from the harddisk but this can be my imagination. I use an external dual fan system to cool the laptop so they make noise.

Am I missing something?
I can not install a simple real player. (Okey not simple but I am frustrated.)

Please HELP.
Do I have to buy new Harddisk?Just 1 question?Does it ok in safe mode?
Good quesiton. Let me try. Be back in a few.Hello from safe mode.

Well I was able to install real player and run a movie. No problems in the last 4 mins of work. Usually it freezes in the middle of a program installation.

Why would it have a problem in normal mode when I have reverted everything back to a known point where there should be no problems. How many autostart program do you have? It's next to the clock
And you said that you defrag while watching movie, try doing it without doing any process, just defrag.
Another thing, try to check for disk volume error, by going to my computer, select the windows partition (usually C:) right click -properties - tools - tick the error checking.

Back in normal mode.

63 running processes.
14 programs.
Norton which is dissabled.
Auto-update from windows which is download something.
Wireless icons - 2.
HP icons - 4.
Bluetooth icon.
Volume.
A program for the touch mouse on the laptop.
Safely remove some hardware.
Credential Manager.
A program that states I am not using batery.

I run the chkdsk - no errors reported.

I tryed to defragment. It told me that I do not need to but I TRIED it anyway.
It crashed again. It froze and grave me a blue screen very fast. All I sow was that one of the entries in the BLUESCREEN was in red background.
After that it restated itself withouth giving me the Non-system dirk or no disk error.Restart and go to the safe mode option, but select disable automatic restart on system failure.

Hopefully we can get the error codeI am still in normal mode.
I disabled the restart and I am waiting for the error, so that I can see the code in the blue screen.

This is what you ment right?

I am running a disk defragment and started a few movies and listening to radion now. The disk defrag is up to 48% and still no restart.

A few freezes but it unfroze.

The only change so far was to disable the automatic restart and I can not see how that would have helped so far.How much free space left?
Remember, windows need atleast 15% of the total capacity.Well I have 87% free space left.

The IE with the online radio just crashed but that can be because of the defrag and I also started Guild Wars and it is downloading files at around 600Kb/sec.Okay in safe mode.

It crashed again.

Here is the code: KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR.

Technical information:
STOP: 0x00000077 (0xC0000056, 0xC0000056, 0x00000000, 0x04BBDD000)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315266

Well I have no idea what that error is.

If anybody can help me I would appreciate it.

It can be RAM, CPU or maybe HD.

I tested the ram it was ok.

I tested the HD it was ok.

I have not tested the CPU only.

It can not be a virus because I have done a reverse to manufacturer twice. How did you test the hard drive ? ?From the error-checking inside windows. I clicked on all the options and had to restart.

It took it some time to complete all the steps.

Got a new error.

STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x85A89150, 0x85A892C4, 0x805D117A)

Solve : file wont delete??

Answer»

I have a .iuf file on my desktop (its COMPLETELY legal dont worry) and it wont delete! I have tried renaming it, moving it rebooting, everything.  It just wont delete! I have even tried a program called unlocker and that wont delete it either!  Any other ways I can unlock it? It keeps saying that a program is using it but I dont see anything open that would be using itThat's weird that unlocker can't.
well try one of these hope it work.

http://www.thefreecountry.com/security/securedelete.shtmlDid you try safe MODE?

Login as Administrator in safe mode

C:\>erase /s  /F   Myfile.iuf

C:\>erase /?
Deletes one or more files.

/F            Force deleting of read-only files.
/S            Delete specified files from all subdirectories.
C:\>try using UNC path and a wildcard in case file name has illegal chars or a trailing space

e.g. if it is c:\Myfile.iuf

del "\\?\C:\Myfile.iuf*"
dear me... the UNC long name prefix! *faint*

*technically* it's just a unique prefix the Wide API functions accept as part of the path to denote that the name can exceed MAX_PATH (240) characters.

Of course I imagine it has other uses... Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 23, 2009, 12:20:22 PM

Of course I imagine it has other uses...

It bypasses the WINDOWS file name checking so it can operate upon files with illegal chars in their names that got on the system somehow eg from a Mac or *nix system.

Actually, computeruler, did you mean a UIF file? Big DVD image file created/used by MagicISO? If so, unmount the virtual drive. Then you can delete the file.
Using Dias's method it says that it cant FIND the path specified.  I know it is the right path for shure THOUGH  computeruler,

Be extremely careful  when using del or erase with wildcards.

First use dir  with the wildcards to see what is found.

Then substitute erase or del for dir.

dir "\\?\C:\Myfile.iuf*"

p.s.  cd \  to the root directory before doing a dir search

So it is a UIF file (and not an IUF file like you posted?) And it has been mounted? I still think this is where the problem is.

I said that? woops ya its a uif.  It has been mounted and there was another one that I mounted that deleted fine but this one just wont
No mounting software is even running right now either Quote from: computeruler on March 23, 2009, 01:50:02 PM

Is it mounted right now? You could try safe mode, or you can do a system restore to a point before you installed MagicISO.not mounted i guess I will try safe mode then

Solve : windows error report?

Answer»

a test web site was started for me to PLAY around with and when i opened it this

report came so i just closed it down , harry

[attachment deleted by admin]The error message doesn't give much away - do other sites work OK ? Running INTERNET Explorer 8 I see, have you tried the site using another PC, or using another browser on your PC? Firefox or Opera for example....its just 1 d.i.y. site , only have 1 pc , and i do not want to CHANGE browsers , i dont think its very much i thought i'd just ask to try and find out why , harryYou don't have to "change" browser, just try another, you can INSTALL more than one.
Asking why IE crashes with a generic error message opening an unknown site, using a system of unknown specs, with no idea what other software is installed  (to anyone reading the post) is rather a tall order.
i could give you the site it checked clean for bugs etcIn any case I suggest you switch to firefox or chrome.

I find chrome to be getting better and better. LIKE an early firefox withouth all the plugins installing all over the place.

Solve : Network vista laptop with XP home laptop over wireless network?

Answer» HI I am TRYING to create a network between my two laptops, one has vista HOME premium and the other has XP home. I want to network them wirelessly using my linksys routerLook here http://compnetworking.about.com/od/homenetworking/a/connecttwocomp.htm

Depending on what your looking to do, gauge the security risk's carefully.

One good way is to use VNC virtual networking client, but if you opt for this option and both laptops are connected 24/7 to the internet without the protection of a hardware firewall then choosing secure passwords is a must as is buying a virtual private networking firewall LIKE a DrayTrek.

Solve : no explorer amongst other windows apps?

Answer»

Hello wondered if someone could help?

I am/was running xp on a work pc. it worked fine until January when i tried to load an update to some third party SOFTWARE. It didn't install correctly and I realised i hadn't attempted to install as administrator as suggesterd by the software. I rebooted or logged off (can't remember now) but ever since it boots up, takes longer than normal but does let me log onto the domain. once logged on the desktop background appears but there is no explorer,no task bar,no desktop icons. in effect, it is a blank screen.

i can view the hard drive via taskbar MANAGER, but it won't run many windows applications such as system restore,ie explorer & explorer. most other non ms applications will work but not all.

i have tried to do a repair from a setup disk but it won't recognise the hard drive (it is a sata drive).

I have contacted the software company that appears to have caused the problem but they have YET to suggest a thing yet, they have had approx 8 weeks to MULL over it .

I would try to format it and try again but i am RELUCTANT as it would mean losing my office oem installation and having to purchase another copy.

Can anyone please help?

thanksfirst get explorer back up by using Task manager, File->New Task, "Explorer"

This should give you back your start menu- where hopefully you can run system restore.

Solve : Can't get Windows to start, help appreciated :]?

Answer»

So as of a few days ago, whenever I go to turn my computer on, I'm greeted by a black and white screen with message telling me it doesn't know what the problem is as well as what is pretty much the Windows Advanced Options Menu. I can navigate this page and select any of the five options [3 SAFE modes, last known good configuration, and restart normally] but doing so yields the same  result every time no matter what I choose: windows seems to be loading for a few minutes, then I get a flash of text with a half second opportunity to press esc or F1.

The last person on the computer was my younger brother, who's ten, and claims that the only mistake he may have made would be unplugging the computer before it had shut down properly, although said scenario has OCCURRED before on this computer without the same effect.

My computer runs on XP.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!Follow the below link to perform a repair of Windows XP...and make sure you follow the directions to the letter:  http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmor...
1. If you have Windows CD, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp

2. If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp, starting below this picture on page 1:
thankyou to the both of you, but i've hit another road block.

I'm FOLLOWING the procedure Broni directed me in, but when I go to punch in the C:ATTRIB -H C:\\BOOT.INI,  C:ATTRIB -R C:\\BOOT.INI,   and  * C:ATTRIB -S C:\\BOOT.INI commands, i'm getting a 'this file cannot be opened' prompt.

once again, any notions as to why this is would be most welcomed.
In this case, the file itself may be missing. Are you actually using Windows CD, or Recovery Console CD?if the recovery console CD  is that file you instructed me to burn, then that'd be it.Copy the text below:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
paste it into Notepad.
Save it as boot.ini
Transfer it to a floppy.

Access Recovery Console again, and copy the new file to C directory.i feel terrible for asking, but i don't particularly know how to do that There is nothing to feel terrible about
Which part of my post does need to be explained better?HELLO, I have the same issue. If I follow the steps for the recovery, will I loose the pictures and files on my hard drive?  Thanks!!!bilzman
Please, start your own topic.Sorry, I am new to this forum, please forgive my intrusion. No problem
Welcome aboard after i access the Recovery Console, how do i go about copying the new file to C directory?

and then do i necessarily have to copy the file to a floppy? or would a CD suffice?

aaand my operating system is listed under H://, i'm not sure if that's significant.

thankyou again soooo much for your help.Oh, now I see what your problem is. Windows is installed on H drive, not C drive.
Go back to Recovery Console, and in all commands replace C with H.

Solve : Wall Paper?

Answer»

I am using windows XP. Whenever I set an wall paper it DISAPPEARS at the time of rebooting my computer and the desktop becomes BLANK. The wall paper remains till such time I reboot the PC. Please help me to set the wall paper permanently.
How do you apply the Wallpaper. Do you go though the Display Properties?YES I go through display properties.  Can you tell me the solution?i usually save the pic SOMEWHERE in my HDD, then set it as background from there. The Picture your using as a wallpaper should be in a folder on your computer. You can click on it and 'Set to desktop background'.

Right click on the desktop and select 'properties' then desktop. The picture should be in the 'Background' List.

Did you select 'Apply' then 'OK'

If 'Apply' is greyed out select another picture, then select the picture you want.

What file extension is the picture you want as a Wallpaper?? Jpeg always work for me.There is no problem in setting a wall paper. My only problem is whenever I reboot the computer, the wall paper I set earlier disappears the the screen becomes blank. What is the REASON for that?
Are you set as the Administrater
