Solve : Need help installing XP!?

Answer»

Okay heres my problem, i currently have a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pa 1510 notebook, with pre-installed vista home premium, however i despise this OS due to lag issues and constant irritating freezes. I wish to install XP Home Edition, however when launching the setup on my desktop the "Install Windows XP" line is in black and i cannot click, i know this CD works because have used it on my previous laptop.  So i tried to go into BIOS setup and put the priority as my cd drive however everytime i reboot my laptop it goes straight to my logon screen. So my questions are, would it be worth formatting my harddrive and possibly installing from there, or could someone please tell me exactly in great detail how to setup BIOS or another way to read the CD no startup, it would be appreciated so much.

Thank you

Regards
DannyWhen you set the boot order to boot from the CD/DVD Drive first, you will be prompted to 'Press any key to boot from CD'.
Are you getting that message? No i'm afraid i'm not i just tried to exclude booting from the harddrive in the BIOS and it loaded from cd but the only message that appears was "Operating System No Found".You could access the CD within Windows, correct?

Can you tell us your current Boot Order.Yeah i can access the setup from within my vista but the "Install Windows XP" is blacked out and i cannot click on it.

My current boot order is;

1. My CD Drive labelled- IDE CD: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T10N-(
2.My Harddrive labelled- IDE HDD: WDC WD1200BEVS-07LATO-(S1)
3.USB CDROM
4.USB HDD
5.PCI BEV
6.USB KEY
7.PCI SCSI
8.USB FDC

thanksTry putting your HDD under USB CDROM.It still BOOTS straight to windows the only way it doesnt boot to windows automatically is by excluding the HDD in BIOS but then it boots to my CD drive but says "Operating System Not Found". Could i perhaps be the copy of windows i have? Or is there another solution. There shouldn't be any problem...

What happens if you move HDD down to the bottom?Still boots straight to windows, i've just tried putting my Vista Recovery Disk in and it reads that perfectly don't know if this makes any difference at all. Try to restore defaults in your BIOS configuration. From there edit your boot order. CD/DVD ROM should be first to bootDone that countless times still boots straight to windows. Could i format my HDD get rid of everything and install XP that way or would that cause more problems. With a laptop XP CD this may be the hangup...
They are designed to ID the hardware you are installing to and if not found it may just be kicking you out to the next boot device which would be your HDD...Guys thanks for all your help i did it all your adivce helped the main problem was the fact i had a corrupt XP CD so i replaced this with home edition rather than professional i really really appreciate every single one of you that helped me thank you so much and i wish you good luck in HELPING others and all of your future endeavours.

Solve : problem with hibernation?

Answer»

I'm just experimenting with HIBERNATION mode a little...

I'll open a couple of programs, and set the power options to hibernate after 1 MINUTE...After a minute, the computer goes into hibernation.  When I turn it back on it won't go back to the state it was in before hibernation...

I get this message instead, with some options:

The last attempt to restart the system from its previous location failed

-Delete restoring data and proceed to system boot menu
-Continue with system restart

I have to choose the FIRST option to be able to boot back into Windows but it doesn't bring back the state it was in before hibernation

The other option loops me back to the error message

Laptop, or desktop?desktop  Don't use any of those options. Period. What options do you mean?  The options I get when the error occurs or the power options in Control Panel?Power saving features  - hibernation, sleep, etc.Another way to Hibernate is Start--Shut Down

Hold Shift at the shutdown screan and Stanby will change to Hibernate.May I ask, why in the world ANYONE needs to some power saving features in case of desktop?I used to use suspend mode since I have a PHONE through my computer and must leave it on all the time. But with my Nvidia card I cant use suspend for some reason unknown

Solve : XP Downloads what seems to be same update for months?

Answer»

Whenever The Windos XP starts, it has been ASKING for about 2 MONTHS to download one and the same update, I think it's number is KB 67...0415 or something. After the down load is complete it does not require a restart even though I restarted it on my own several times
but each day I start windows after previous day shutdown it still wants to download what looks like the same update. Is there aproblem with my Windows XP?Try going to the Microsoft Update site instead of Automatic Update and see if it installs from there. If it does not WORK, next time it says the update name, post it hereThe update it wants to download ( and I let it do it all the time) is the update number KB967715There are countless users with the same problems, and no definitive fix...you might try turning off the auto update and manually installing the update in safe MODE...there does appear to be some success doing it this way.

Solve : Windows XP Start-Up Problems (I see why it's XP, smiley reference)?

Answer»

I just bought my Acer ASPIRE One laptop two months AGO. I was listening to music, had a text document open, and was playing Freecell. Suddenly my laptop completely froze and did not unfreeze after 5 minutes. I shut it down. Now, when I turn it on, it goes through the boot PROCESSES and comes to a screen that asks me how I would like to run my computer (SAFE mode, last known GOOD configuration, start windows normally, etc...). When I choose last known good configuration or run windows normally, it goes to the screen where it says Windows XP and had the blue bars running underneath that shows it is loading. After it is done, it goes to a blank screen. When I try in Safe Mode, the script scrolls down the screen and then stops. It doesn't do anything else. The green light that shows it's working blinks a few times then goes off. The computer is still running but nothing is coming up. It seems to freeze right before the log-in.

Please help me. I searched through a few FAQ's but to continue would have taken years... Quote

Solve : human interface devices dissapeared?

Answer»

I meesed up my registry (maybe or maybe not), but I have MS FSX flight simulator. I have a new USB controller called 'saitek flight instrument panel'
It started to work, but never did work right. In fact, now it works less than before, and never has communicated with FSX

to be short

In all the fixes I was TRYING, etc, I seemed to have lost the 'human INTERFACE devices' category from my DEVICE MANAGER. (I use xp home)

When I plug in all 3 of my FSX controllers, they all appear in device mager under a catergory called 'unkown'

It used to say 'human interface devices'

2 of the 3 usb controllers work, but not ONE of them

one of the devices called HID compliant device' does not have a driver associated with it also

any ideas?

thanks

Solve : XP Profile Space?

Answer»

Okay I put the reinstall disk in my computer recently when I had a problem and it fixed the problem but made another now I have an icon by the clock that says Available Profile Space when I click it a list of files pops up and at times it says you cannot LOG off until you move or delete some files. Okay SOUNDS simple until you go to click on a file listed in the profile space nothing happens there is no hint of where to view these files to delete THAM or anything. I cannot SHUT my computer off now and am stuck any suggestions as to how to turn off Profile Space or delete files? This is NOT a public computer it is my home computer. Thanks and HELPPPPPPP!    If you have backups of your files and programs then I would reformat the hard drive. this should solve the problem. When you fixed the first problem it corrupted something. Do I put the install disc in and RUN it again? I looked at the Available Profile thing again it won't let me log off right now I can't access any of the files it says I have in my profile they are almost all
Aplication Data/Sun/Java/Deployment/Cache blah blah can't see the rest it goes to the edge of the window. This computer also had a problem at restart it would ask me which version of windows I wanna run. I think this thing has 2 versions of windows on it from when I put the install disc in before. I'm afraid this time if I put the disc in it'll kill the computer. Suggestions?

Solve : Display settings revert to 8 bit colour on reboot in XP Pro?

Answer»

Hi all

Window XP Pro
Latest Windows Updates
Nvidia GeForce 8600GT Video Card + Latest Driver

Recently my sons PC, the display settings on start up have been reverting to 8 BIT colour.  I configure the settings as required and the PC works fine.  Then when the PC reboots it reverts back to 8 bit colour again.

I have removed the graphics drivers and REINSTALLED the latest drivers with no effect.  Same problem occur.

Any ideas?

Thanks

TechnowarriorBad card?Does the problem occurs when you have XP load its generic drivers?Hi Guys

Sorry I have not posted for a couple of days but I have been away.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Well here is what I did.

I started from scratch.  Removed the graphic card and the monitor drivers and used Microsoft's generic drivers.  I like the way you are THINKING Jerryheavyarms!  Sadly this did not solve the problem.  Slaved an identical Graphics card in as still the problem remains.

I checked Windows was fully updated, clean installed graphics drivers (nope) Clean installed Monitor drivers (nope).

Decided to use msconfig and by a process of elimination under the start up tab, I concluded the mouse drivers were causing the problem.  I have a Roccat Cone Mouse so I removed the moused drivers and hey presto everything worked fine.  I downloaded the latest mouse drivers from there website and guess what?....................................... .........
nope!  The problem occurred again.

BEARING in mind I have rebooted the PC over 30 times by now, nightmare and boring.  So I removed the mouse drivers and it works fine.

I have emailed Roccat Kone manufacturers and made them aware of the conflict with my system.

I will let you know what I FIND out.

Thanks for your input.

Solve : Windows Task Manager - how to delete processes?

Answer»

I'm running XP Home on 3 different computers. Trying to get each of them functioning better.

In the Windows Task Manager (ctrl-alt-del) one computer has 51 processes, another has 67 processes, and another 49 processes.

How do I QUICKLY (smile) and EASILY find out what each of these are for (the ones under my name -- not the ones under System)?

And, how do I delete those that are no longer necessary?

I am NOT a super-whiz at fixing computers -- but probably have enough of a grasp to follow clear instructions and know when to 'back off.'

Many thanks!Type in the processes on a web SEARCH, and it should come up what they do. Do you want to end a process for your current computer session, or disable it running whnen you startup your PC?Hi;,
I want to disable it completely - remove it -- never have to deal with it -- for most of them.

Some of them I would like to only disable at startup.

Thanks!
First write it down, then google the item you want to stop. Leave the SVCHOST alone, they are needed. Once you get your LIST START>RUN>MSCONFIG and then go to the startup tab. Uncheck each entry and then Apply and then OK and reboot the computer and see how it runs. If it runs fine then do the next in line and then reboot.

This is not a job for beginners, it is best done by someone who knows something about the Windows OS and what needs to run. If you have never worked in the OS itself like this DO NOT DO IT.

It seems to me you have programs that you have installed that are all running at startup.OK --
I'll give some thought to this. Perhaps try it on the computer I think has the least potential for being useful for me.

I really appreciate the help.

DO NOT mess around if you don't know much , on CH page you will see search to the right , bring up task

manager , type in each process and read about it MOST of them will be neededThanks! Shall proceed with caution -- mostly looking - not changing anything!
Really appreciate. Black Viper Services Guide

Pay heed to the Warnings. Thanks for the link lead. I've looked it over -- most of it is a little over my head. However, I'll look it over again tomorrow when my head is fresh!

I've made a list of all the various processes -- and have been finding what they are for. I've decided to just leave all of them alone.

Thanks again!good MAN wise thing to do

Solve : BIOS SETTING PASSWORD?

Answer»

I have an ACER laptop that I bought from a pawn shop (no reboot cd, no warranty, nothing like that). OS is windows XP. Windows crashed and I'm trying to reload windows but there is a password on the BIOS settings and I can't reload winows till I can get by that password. Does anyone have any ideas? When did you get it?

What happens if you don't put in a password and just press Enter? It won't let me enter BIOS settings at all.Whats happening is every time I try to turn on the computer it will START just fine and as soon as it gets to the SCREEN with the windows logo it shuts off and begins to reboot. As long as I leave it turned on it continues this process. I was told that windows crashed and thats why its doing that. I took it to a friend that has a disk but he can't get into the BIOS settings to reload windows. Why do you need to get into the BIOS settings?

Just pop the DISC in and boot from it.

If the CD Drive is not set to boot first, that's where this BIOS password would be a problem...Ya thats the problem it doesn't boot first so the order needs to be changed.Well there is nothing that can be DONE with the BIOS password.

How old is the laptop?honestly I'm not sure how old it isbut I don't think its that old.  I GUESS I'm just gonna have to get a new hard drive.Getting a new hard drive won't matter. The BIOS password is in the BIOS itself, not the hard drive.

Perhaps if you bring it to the shop or a service center, they can help you with that password issue. You will need proof of ownership though.

Solve : Not sure if this is an XP thing?

Answer»

On the bottom BAR that has your virus program, anti spyware icons etc, everytime I print something it gives me a big reminder (about a 3 inch block) where it is being sent. It lasts about 10 to 15 seconds but is very annoying. Is there a way to defeat it?No, not specific to the XP OS. It is the anti-spy ware program you are using that is TELLING you about everything that is going out of you machine.
Check the options in you anti-virus or anti-spy ware program.Thanks. Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 25, 2009, 01:08:17 AM

I would guess it is the software you installed with the printer. Does it show print progress and so forth? It just says that it this DOCUMENT has been sent to this printer and then gives a description of the printer and a few other related things..Definitely part of the printer driver. I doubt a AV program would care about printer output.

I take it it doesn't provide any options? My lexmark Printer driver provides the ability to hide the window. Quote from: BCP
Definitely part of the printer driver.

Could be the Windows system tray bubble thing.

The Bubba, if you mean you are getting a pale yellow system tray notification, that LOOKS like a speech balloon or bubble  in a comic strip, SOMETIMES called a "bubble notification ", that is shaped like the one in this picture:

Solve : Retrieving XP license key?

Answer»

Ok, I've got a computer here in my office. It's running Windows XP Home on a SATA DRIVE.

The computer apparently got infected by a virus and now ABSOLUTELY will not BOOT:
Quote

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen... Blah blah blah (Check for viruses, remove anything new, etc. etc. etc.)...

Technical information:
STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7986528,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)

This happens in both safe and normal mode.

At this POINT, he's not worried about RECOVERING any of the files from the hard drive (kept regular backups). Just wants a wipe and reinstall.

This is a legitimate version of Windows (I know, I built the computer a year ago and sold him the disc). Unfortunately, he seems to have misplaced the case with the license key, but he does still have the disc. Seeing as I can't get into Windows to retrieve the key, any ideas how I might get this thing working enough to get the key off?

(By the way, I did try a repair install, which didn't work. Still gets the stop error.)

-=EDIT=-

Nevermind. He found his license. Problem solved.Glad to hear things worked out...

Solve : Computer wakes on its own?

Answer»

The Problem
For the past several months my computer has been coming out of stand-by periodically at various times during the day and night, and for the first time today, I witnessed it going back into stand-by about 45 min after it had come out.  I rarely turn my computer all the way off, and simply put in stand-by when I'm not using it.  Since my computer is in my bedroom, I've noticed more when it comes on by itself in the middle of the night, but it does happen during the day too and never at the same time.  As far as I can tell, it's not really doing anything when it wakes up.

My System
Dell Dimension C521
Windows XP-SP3
Norton 360/Avast

What I've Tried
1. I've looked at the event viewer after most of the incidents and the first record is always for my network card (Broadcom 440x 10/100 INTEGRATED Controller: Network controller configured for 100Mb full-duplex link.).  The NEXT events are not consistent, and often not there since I usually turn it off right away when this happens.
2. I've checked that my network card cannot wake the computer.
3. I ran Norton anti-virus scans and found no infection.
4. I SUSPECTED that Windows updates may be the problem, so I set my automatic updates to "notify but do not download."
5. I suspected that Norton updates may be the issue so after trying to limit Norton's ability to update, I uninstalled Norton and replaced with Avast.
6. I've never set any programs to run automatically, and none are set to do so as far as I can tell.  This has probably been going on for almost a year now, but as far as I can remember I made no significant changes to my system before it began.

Help!
I've searched the internet for hours looking for a solution, but haven't found anyone else listing a similar problem.  If there is anyone who has dealt with this or knows what's going on, your assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Otherwise, I would at least like some guidance on how I can figure out which program/setting is WAKING my computer.

Thanks!

Is your computer losing time?
No, the clock is always correct.Check you Power Settings in Control Panel, see if anything is set to bring the computer out of stand-by.I opened Power Options in the Control Panel, but did not see anything related to a program's ability to bring my computer out of stand-by.  There were four tabs:
1. Power Schemes.  Set to Minimal Power Management which turns the monitor off Never, the hard disks off after 1 hour, goes to standby after 20 min and hibernates never.
2. Advanced.  Some general options relating to icons, passwords and buttons.
3. Hibernate.  Hibernate is enabled.
4. UPS.  The UPS Service is currently stopped. Are you running Skype or Messenger?...If so, they may be "checking in" and causing you to come out of standby.....Shut them down if you have them running and see if the problem persists. Thanks for the suggestion.  I do run MSN Messenger, and come to think of it, this all may have started around the time I installed Windows Live Messenger.  I will shut this program down for a while and see if the situation improves.Well, it happened again.  I've had MSN Messenger off since Sunday but this morning my computer was on when I got up.  The event log showed the following entries under System:

The time on my computer was correct when I got on.  Does anyone know if there is a program or something that will tell me exactly what my computer is doing when this happens?  I know there must be a setting in some program that's causing this I just can't figure out which one.Boot into setup...enter the BIOS and disable "Wake on LAN"...I'm not very familiar with BIOS, but I believe this is already set.  The ability to wake was dissables in the power management settings for my network card.

Solve : install checklist?

Answer»

Ok... bear with me. I'm going to reinstall Windows XP. I have everything I can think of backed up. I'm, of course, going to unplug everything except my KEYBOARD and mouse then do the install. After the install, I will have to set up a network station. My pc is the host, ie, printer, modem, router etc...  is there a checklist or order of things I should do to get running again?

I'm thinking, first install viruscan, enable firewall how I want it, set up a network station, then plug the modem/router back in. This is where I'm a little weary, I'm hoping it will get me back on the WEB with little if any tweaking(?) you see, I'm the host PC, ie. printer, modem/router etc. are on me... am I just being too paranoid and just go for it?First step should be Drivers...

Solve : A little help, please.?

Answer»

Okay, so I went like, two years without computer problems. Well, the streak had to end sometime or another. I have a new computer, I bought it not even a year ago; it was around August 13, 2008. I was very careful with the computer, but all of a sudden, it started making a SORT of sound as if the fan were hitting into something. My MOTHER tried hitting it and it made a different sound until it gradually got louder again. This problem is a bit old, however, my mother said she'd try and get my UNCLE to fix it. He took off the side and got rid of all of the dust in the computer, he turned on the computer afterwords, and it was still making that annoying sound. Well, after a few days of that, right in the middle of me writing some C++ code, the computer just shut down all of a sudden. So, I got on my mother's old, slow laptop, and that's what I'm still USING now - and when I say slow, I mean slow. I would just take it up to a place to have it FIXED, however, there is only one problem. I live in Ohio, and the computer was purchased at Circuit City. All of the stores here have closed, so I have no way to fix it.

I'd be very thankful for any help.

It doesn't matter at this point. You can return computer to the store only in first 30 days. After that computer manufacturer warranty kicks in.
You have to call them. They may have some repair center near your place.

Avoid doing anything what would void the warranty. Quote from: Broni on February 26, 2009, 02:03:05 PM

Solve : Missing cd rom from "my computer"?

Answer»

I have a Gateway computer, USING Windows XP.  I am missing my cd rom from "my computer".  I am new to this forum and not too computer-savvy.  However, I was searching on the web and found this site.  I followed the advise given by CBMatt on going into the Device Manager, and look for a ! next to the CD drive.  I found ! next to HL_DT-ST CD-ROM GCR-84838, as well as ! next to LITE-ON DVDR W SDHW-16335.  I UNINSTALLED both, then restarted the computer. Went into "my computer", no cd drive still.  Went back into Device Manager and both were back there w/the !.  Any ideas?  Thanks. You tried the first option, so proceed with others....

1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run RESTORE Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.Used the missing cd patch and it worked - I am back in business!  Thanks so very much from a happy Grandma!  Have a great WEEKEND!Way to go!!

Solve : my laptop freezes after booting up - getting errors?

Answer»

Both my computers use Windows XP. I haven't used my laptop in a while and just recently purchased new security SOFTWARE - PC Security Shield 2009 v2. I uninstalled the previous version and successfully loaded it on my laptop today but when I restart the laptop it boots to the desktop but then it freezes and I keep getting the error message:

FSM32.exe - unable to locate component

The mouse moves but I can't open anything. My TASK manager won't open nor will it run any disks. Please help!

Thanks!Additionally, I have had to manually shut off my laptop numerous times after it freezes. Thanks.PC Security Shield has pretty bad reviews: http://internet-security-suite-review.toptenreviews.com/pc-security-shield-review.html
Why did you decide to go with it?

FSM32.exe is part of F-Secure Antivirus, which actually is the engine for PC Security Shield’s antivirus, which means, your security program is at fault. Contact the maker. Based on the above review - good luck.I had problems with both Norton & McAfee so I decided to try something different. PCSS has been great until now. My laptop has always been a bit flaky anyway. I'll try contacting them and see what happens. Thanks for your help.I had another thought. If the problem COMES from my AV software but because the system freezes and won't allow me to uninstall the program - I can't get to my control panel - access other programs or even restore the system, how would I begin to fix this problem?See, if you can uninstall it from Safe Mode.

Stay away from Norton, and McAfee.
Very good, free alternatives:

- Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
- Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html

- free PC Tools Firewall Plus: http://www.pctools.com/firewall/

- free Comodo Internet Security (firewall + AV): http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

If you decide to install Avast, or Avira, make sure, Windows firewall is turned on, or use PC Tools Firewall Plus.
If you decide to install Comodo, make sure, Windows firewall is turned off.

IMPORTANT! Make sure, you use only ONE antivirus, and ONE firewall.Well, I tried safe mode, which got me in but I was unable to uninstall my security software. I booted up in regular mode and before the errors started showing up and freezing everything I was able to open my control panel, which showed up for about a 1/2 second then began trying to search for it. So I'm still not able to get to where I can uninstall the AV software.

Since the laptop (Dell Inspiron 6000 with XP, service pack 2) is not my main computer and there's nothing on it that needs saved, would it be easier to start over? I have the Windows CDs that came with my desktop which is also XP, SP2 - can I use those to reinstall my OS?

Also, if I get to a point where my laptop actually works, how do you set the system restore point?

Thanks for all your help so far.System Restore points are set automatically, but sometimes they simply refuse to work, or they're not able to fix the problem.
Your reinstall idea is probably good option, however using XP CD from another computer would be considered illegal.
Not all is lost since your Dell should have RECOVERY Partition, which normally can be accessed by pressing CTRL + F11 keys at the startup.I've never heard of PC Security Shield...perhaps they offer a refund ? ?
Maybe....http://internet-security-suite-review.toptenreviews.com/pc-security-shield-review.htmlThanks, Broni - the recovery WORKED! Appreciate all your advice.

My laptop is now back to it's original state and while I'm having a little trouble with my wireless networking, that is the least of my worries. I'm just glad I can use the laptop again. I'm glad, you sorted it out, and....stay away from some PC Security Shield 2009

Solve : AOL 9.0 "Not Responding"?

Answer»

AOL locks up and the message "Not Responding" appears at the top of the screen.  It TAKES somewhere between 20 -30-40- seconds before it clears and you can do whatever you are trying to do.  It happens with e-mails, web sites etc.  I downloaded RegCure and ran it but it didn't do any good.  Same OLD problem.Any errors when you open AOL?I am having the same problem but I have AOL 9.5. The whole not responding thing has even leaked over to my IE and FIREFOX. Sometimes it never kicks back in and I have to X out of the program. My friend blames it on AOL. He said AOL clogs up the whole computer.Your friend is right. AOL is bloat ware. My suggestion for you is to downgrade to AOL 8.0. I used to use the AOL software but I got so tired of the updates were always more bubbly and bloated and ridiculous. So, I ended up downgrading all the way back to AOL 5.0 which was the last VERSION they made that was made totally for functionality INSTEAD of aesthetics.

Try 8.5 which is almost the same thing as 9.0. If that doesn't work for you, my recommendation is to uninstall AOL and reinstall. There is no hope in fixing AOL software. It will only get worse. I hate to be negative but it's just true.

Solve : BSOD's not allowing me to do anything?

Hi, im having a BSOD problem. Ive been getting them frequently lately, but i dont think ive installed any new drivers or anything besides GFX driver, which i rolled back to see if that was the problem but wasnt. I have also reformatted my computer but this still occurs. I dont know if i need to update a driver or have faulty hardware.

The BSOD says:

driver IRQL not less or equal

Motherboard - Asus
CPU - E6600
and i have a soundcard in my computer A D1 error is specific:

Quote

The system attempted to access pageable memory using a kernel process IRQL that was too high. The most typical cause is a bad device driver (one that uses improper addresses). It can also be caused by caused by faulty or mismatched RAM, or a damaged pagefile.

Uninstall the drivers...uninstall the vid card in Device Manager...upon re-boot re-install the ORIGINAL drivers that SHIPPED with the card...
When finished re-boot.
Newer drivers are not always better drivers...what if i cant stay on long enough to uninstall the video card?Safemode.Also...

Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, ZIP all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.

Solve : booting to the bios?

Answer»

Hello:
I have 2 hard DISKS both with windows xp on them.
one has a bug in system and the other is a clean INSTALL and is ok.
the problem is that the computer when cold booted defaults to the hard drive with the windows xp with the bug.
any ideas on how i can make it BOOT to the correct drive?
I have tried f9 and moved the correct one up the LADDER but still same problem.
thanks
richard Well the obvious answer WOULD be to remove the problem drive from your computer.

Have you checked the jumper settings on the drives?
Are you sure that the drives are in the correct postions on the IDE ribbon?

What are you trying to accomplish? How are you moving it up the ladder ? ?
Normally you press the + tab til the drive you want to boot to is at the top of the list and then hit F10 to Exit and save changes...then press Y or Enter to re-boot...

Solve : Need some serious help!?

Answer»

Hi, new to the forum, I'm here because I've hit a brickwall....

running an old sharp laptop, with XP pro, the 'enter' key doesn't work, but that wasn't an issue, until now....

I contracted a virus from facebook, it has left my PC constantly rebooting, I can get to the 'choose boot' screen and can highlight safemode, but I cannot press enter.
Is there a way of forcing the computer into safemode?
I have just bought a USB to IDE/SATA cable and have removed the hard drive, I can access it and have run AVG on it to remove the virus, but it has left me with the registry issue, does anyone know the DOS command that will allow me to repair the registry?
I tried system restore, but that only restores the main drive on the host computer, I do have the original RECOVERY disks, but the cdrom is playing up and wont see them as boot disks, any help would be greatly appreciated, cheers JedIf you use an external keyboard, you can use its enter key.

What "registry issue" are you referring to? Can't really tell you how to fix it without knowing what exactly the issue is.can't plug an external keyboard into the laptop, there is no port for one and the registry issues would be the start up commands, the reason the PC is constantly rebooting, this is a nightmare! Quote from: jedondrums on June 30, 2009, 09:12:34 AM

can't plug an external keyboard into the laptop, there is no port for one

Are you saying this laptop has neither a USB nor a PS/2 port?

What model is the laptop?Hi, it is an old sharp, it does have USB ports, but those don't fire up until windows has booted, I was using a numeric keypad and it's enter button, but that won't work until windows is running, it does have a PS2 connection on the rear, but it has the recess for the plastic block horizontally instaed of vertically, if that makes any sense?just had another look at it, its not a ps2 port its an svhs port......An older laptop should have a PS2 Port...
Look again. Quote
I was using a numeric keypad and it's enter button,

What port do you use to connect the numeric keypad, it should work for an external keyboard as well.  Unless it was one of the older serial ones.Hi, the keypad is USB unfortunatly and there are NO serial or PS2 ports, it is a Sharp Notebook, if that helps
it came with no XP disks, but I do have 2 restoration disks, is it POSSIBLE to run those to the hard drive, which is connected to this PC by USB cable? or perform a system restore on only that drive, I tried it, but it just restored the drive on the host PC, really getting to the end of my tether with it......ok. here's the latest update.....

installed partition magic and used the boot screen to access the laptop drive, attatched by USB, it now boots so far until I get the error message 'Autochk MISSING' then it reeboots, I repeated the proceedure and hit F5, which brought up the 'safe mode' boot option, pressed the enter button, but once again it rebooted.....

4 DAYS and counting.......right, after trolling the internet for the last couple of weeks, finding solutions to problems I had, and finding solutions to problems I wish I had....
I have formatted the entire drive, TOLD you I had had enough..... .....

OK, now I need a link to DOWNLOAD msdos, any version.... if I can boot the laptop, I can install XP once again... ANYONE???What exact model of sharp laptop is this?

Solve : NEW OWNER; OLD I.D.?

Answer»

Can anyone help?  I am at least the third owner of a computer that I have been given, but it is showing the original owner's name. It is running Windows XP but I have no discs for it at all. Is there a way that I can delete this obsolete name and replace it with my own? It is NOT connected to the web. What name are we talking about? Username?

Go to Control Panel and click User Accounts. No, not 'User Name' This I have altered with the log in 'Password'
It is the "Owner's Name" that keeps appearing in different programmes and in the Computer Spec etc..I don't think that can be changed. You may have to look in the program's settings.

As for computer specs, I assume you mean the display when you Right Click My Computer and go to Properties? (under Registered to)Yes, that's the one. Described as 'Registered to: XXXXXXX xxxxx'I don't know if this is what you are looking for but ........

Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ MICROSOFT\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion.
To change the values of the RegisteredOrganization, RegisteredOwner, or ProductId, simply double-click on them.

OR

Use this UTILITY:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_change_owner.htm

And when you run WINVER, you should see that it's now showing it's licensed to whatever new name you give it.

HOWEVER ....
The user profile home directory name (C:\Documents and Settings\[the previous registry name]\Desktop or something similar) can't be changed. But you can create a duplicate user profile in a different name (preferred name) and remove the old profile at a convenient time but remember you gotta be an admin on your new account obviously.

Here's a website which may be of use to you: Create a duplicate user profile with a different name - Windows XP:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/dupprofile.htm

Thanks for your REPLIES. I will try the manual METHOD as the computer involves is not connected to the web and so I would not be able to download any links into it and I do not want to use the one I am at the moment as I do not want any problems here. Thanks again.

Solve : Windows XP Install & Adaptec 5405 Raid Controller?

Answer»

I have new Dell XPS 630i and wanted to set it as a Raid 5 system with 4 x 500 GB drives included in the array.  To do that I had to buy a controller card (Adaptec 5404).  The card was successfully installed, DETECTED by the motherboard bios and selected as the HD Boot device.  During the install of Windows XP, specifically during the “Format” process Windows does not seem to be communicating with the drives through the card (no ACTIVITY lights) and completes in under 2 minutes (way too short in my opinion), during the loading of the setup files (and 5405 Drivers) there is lots of activity on the lights!

The problem seems to be that once the startup files are loaded and the computer reboots for the first time during the setup, the Windows Splash Screen comes up but the loading bar never moves and then I get a error message “Check for viruses on your PC, Remove any installed HD’s or HD Controllers, Check your HD to MAKE sure it is PROPERLY configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for HD corruption and then restart your computer. Technical Information: ***STOP: 0XF78A524, 0X0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000”.  The problem seems to me that Windows is not formatting the drive so when the computer reboots it does not recognize the C: Drive as an operating system.

Anyone out there have any advice??

After re-installing windows i have noticed that i no longer have a wireless network CONNECTION icon and the following drivers are missing

1) Ethernet Controller
2) Multimedia Audio Controller
3) PCI Modem
4) Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

I now know i should have been clever and copied the drivers before cleaning my install, la hard esson LEARNT.

My questions are... would any of these be the cause of my wireless icon problem and how would i locate these as ive tried an automatic driver update via the internet to no avail.. if this is not the case could anyone help me get my wireless back (dont REALISE how good it is till its not there)

Thanks in advanceDid you recieve an Acer Driver CD with this laptop ? ?
If so all the neccessary drivers are on that CD...
Just put it in and click the setup icon from Explorer and it will install them...
If the above is not true then you'll have to go fishing at Acer's site and DLoad the proper ones.
Chipset/MBoard drivers should be installed FIRST.thanks patio..

Click Here...  and jump thru the hoops with the card info and Windows version to grab the proper drivers...DLoad install them and re-boot ...
Any change ? ?Ill do that...but. What does this have to do with Audio Sevice High Definition Audio Bus I said before? It means one or more of your audio component drivers is corrupt/malfunctioning...
Hence the re-install.OK, well I tried Live!>Sound Blaster Live!> Downloaded. Installed.
...STILL doesn't work I tried out the diagnostic, and here were the results

Everything passed except for....

Mixer Driver
SoundFront Setting Test
Mixer setting Test

These all failed....Think this might be the problem? If you are using the front panel connections on the machine than yes this is where the problem is......Sorry Im not that good on CPU (Only for internet)
But how can I tell if I am using front panel connections? Is the mike plugged into the front of the machine ? ?
If so try the rear connectors.

Solve : 2 Oerating systems on one HD?

Answer»

I have 2 versions of XP on my laptop hard drive. How do I delete ONE without deleting both? 1.  Post the contents of your "%systemdrive%\boot.ini" FILE so we can see what's going on.

2.  The boot.ini file is normally a "read-only", "hidden", "system" file but you can easily view the contents via the following steps (Do not "cut", "delete", or "modify" the contents):

    a.  Left click "Start" button.  Start menu should appear.

    b.  RIGHT click "My Computer" on the right hand SIDE of the menu.  A context menu should appear.

    C.  Left click the "Properties" item.  "System Properties" windows should appear.

    d.  Left click the "Advanced" tab to bring its view forward.

    e.  Left click the "Settings" button under the "Startup and Recovery" subsection toward the bottom third of the view.  The "Startup and Recovery" window will appear.

    f.  Left click the "Edit" button under the "System Startup" subsection located top third of the view.  Contents of "boot.ini" will display probably in a "notepad" window.

I have bought a new hard drive that has a different connection to the one i have already installed! no prob went to my local pc man and got a bus port to connect with.I have set all these items up and what i get when booting up(bios is set to boot from cd and bootable windows cd in drawer) In big yellow letters i get the following......."If you want to install LINUX default partition RAID driver, please do not use Oprom creation OPERATION" Does this make any sense to you guys?? It then goes on to flash up the "E machine" logo to be followed by a flashing cusror!!!

I worry now that i have changed a setting in the bios and screwed it good HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLL LLLLLLLLLLL PPPPPPPPPPPPPP!

ANY ADVICE IS TRULY APPRECIATED

Hubelly

Ps i have tried moving the connector to other bus ports but get the same deal???

Th other point though is that the original hard drive that i took out works fine in my external drive!!!?? When i used that on the desktop it started going into chkdsk straight off and would get to "part two of checking disk on c" it would then stay static on say 33%.I left it for 72 hrs but to no avail so that's why i think bios?

Thanks again Hubelly
