There are a number of known downsides to IE 7 and many who INSTALLED it are going back to IE 6.As in fact i have done. Agoogle search on reverting to IE 6 will show an abundance of users seeking info on how to go back. That must say something about IE 7 that is less than complimentary. One thing you lose on IE 7 (known to Microsoft and a fix promised) is that there is no direct link ability to hotmail as in earlier versions. Solve : Windows Updating problem?

Answer»

I am RUNNING Windows XP Pro SP3.  I have windows update set up to download the updates and let me choose when to install.

When updates are ready I click on the message and a window comes up requesting an auto  install or custom install. I usually select the custom install so I can see what will be installed. All the elements appear to install without any problems at this stage. After installation is complete, but before rebooting, I check the UninstallKB... folders in the c:\Windows directory, all new elements are there.
After rebooting, all of those new folders are gone and about a day later I get the same updates to install again. This repeats day after day.
Any ideas what is going wrong?
THANKSI BELIEVE I found the problem.
At the time I started to have this problem I remember installing a program called Returnil. This is a program that, when turned on would prevent SAVING to system areas of the hard disk and registry. SOMETHING went wrong with the installation because the program show that it is "off", but when I tried to uninstall it, it stated that it cannot be uninstalled until it is turned off.
In the end I managed to uninstall it so that now windows works fine.

Solve : When I click on my specific user it directs me to a default desktop.?

Answer»

I've been having problems with my computer for a while. I originally thought it all had to to with the consumption of disk space, but after I REMOVED about 11 gigs worth of pictures the issues remained. My computer has three user profiles and 2 of them direct me to the correct personal settings, but my primary user LOADS some sort of default when I click on it. The default has all of my programs, but the files are hidden and it won't allow me to make setting changes, (like changing the background). When I first STARTED to have this problem, I'd click on my regular user and it would complain of some sort of error, (like not having enough space to direct me to my regular profile). I'd click O.K. and it would direct me to the default, which I would sign out of and then sign into again. It would then load the correct settings. Now it only goes directly to the default.

My internet has also slowed down.Create a new user account and transfer the files from the old, corrupted one.

It is a usb drive on which I have my portable office. I keep it plugged to keep my browsers, email client and security apps updated. I didn't have this problem last year.

That is the error  that occurs sometimes. I have not found a reason for it.  Most of the time a reboot fixes it. The system freezes and I have the eternal hourglass and I wait and wait. I get up make coffee and wait more. Finally I do a hard boot. What could be the reason for it. Some conflict of programs I have.  I REINSTALL my OS each new year. This is the first year that I have had the error.Turn off indexing service on all your hard drives...re-boot.Howdy, thank you. I thought that I had turned it off, and turned off Systm Restore on the three non system partitions. The last i  thought I'd check. Did some update of Microsoft turn those on? Or maybe I am losing my brain. I followed your instruction. I rebooted.  I lowered the space for SR on my C drive;  I use ERUNT  anyway. I really dont need the indexing service; I use Copernic. I'll get back to you with the result.  I usually don't go more than two hours or four without the problem occurring. Thank you. The beginning of the year I turned off the Indexing Service and the SR monitoring of D, E, F drives.I believe I should turn off Auto Update. Good to see you again Triple S...i remember you from the old days at another Forum.Haven't had problem again, yet.

Solve : Screenshots appear too small?

Answer»

Hi, hope someone can help me...

Since at some point strangely, when I take a screenshot, paste in MS PAINT, save as "such file" (no problem up to here), then open that file and it's too small - only a quarter of space in Picture and Fax Viewer. It never used to HAPPEN in the last few years and dosens of screenshots, I'm totally confused no idea what's causing it.

A few weeks ago I saved several pictures after resizing to 50%, wondered if something in PC remembers that setting - but before pasting ss I check MS paint setting and everything is normal/100%.

I use:
Window XP pro, SP3

Any advice appreciated... thanks much in advance. For XP

You can also resize your picture by dragging the image resize handles, located at the lower-right corner and along the bottom and right sides of your picture. (You might need to maximize the window to see the square resize handles.)
If your current picture is bigger than the new size, the picture is cut from the right side and bottom to fit within the SMALLER area. If your current picture is smaller than the new size, the extra area is FILLED with the selected background color.

Haven't checked Attributes before.

They were like w:1500+  h:1150+
I clicked Default and the numbers changed to w:800 and h:600
That seems solved my problem.
I can see screenshots in proper size now.

Solve : small Windows ME not filling screen?

Answer»

Having just installed Win ME on my old Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop, I find the OS screen is only half-filling the monitor screen; and the usual method of going to My Computer/Display/Settings and moving the slider to enlarge  does not work as the slider does not respond, is immovable.

As this same CD was used to reinstall Win ME on another drive with a satisfactory screen size, I wonder why this time the screen is so SMALL and what can be done to correct the problem?

There also seems to be only 16 colors present, and is it possible to increase the NUMBER? No adjustment is possible using the above route.

Any insights GRATEFULLY received.Re-install the VIDEO drivers...then right clik any blank area of the DESKTOP and select a higher resolution...Thanks; I re installed the drivers as suggested - using the Display/Settings/ Advanced/Change route, and the Win ME system took over and did the rest. Good News indeed...stop by anytime !

Solve : Unable to download music purchased from Rhapsody?

Answer»

I am a computer dummy.  Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.  I have an HP w/Windows XP.  Trend Micro and Spyware are the security.

Problem:  Cannot download purchased music from RHAPSODY.  Every time I try, I get "Page cannot be displayed".  Rhapsody support is telling me to "check my browser settings" and "configure my firewall".   I don't know how to do any of this.  My browser is Internet Exp.  And as how to "configure my firewall", I don't have a clue.  I've clicked on TrendMicro and Spyware but I don't know what I'm looking for.

Rhapsody isn't being very nice.  You'd think they'd at least REFUND my MONEY for the TRACKS, but no.   They're a big operation and I would think their systems would be compatible with a majority of computers.  am I wrong?  I am so frustrated!

Thanks for listening and any advice or steps to resolving this problem.

Did you check, if XP drivers are out there, FIRST?
No.
Here you go.

No, sirDo you have a recovery partition on your hard drive? I believe your Acer notebook would have had a recovery partition when you bought it.  So, you should be able to restore the system to its original configuration.  Then, try installing XP under a dual-boot configuration.  A reference: How to dual boot Vista and XP (with Vista installed first) -- the step-by-step guide with screenshotsthank you very much appreciated you could try here for driver's

Solve : windows starting problem?

I am using Windows XP. RECENTLY I am having problem with starting the windows. Sometimes when I start my computer, it gets stuck up in the middle & it doesn't start. Though the CPU is running, but nothing is seen on the screen. I have to restart by pressing restart button on the CPU. Then it starts after a warning message that there was some error. why this happens?seems the boot file may be corrupt or a program recently added is causing a problem...many many reasons...failed hardware....bios battery is dead....you name it and it can happen...can you boot to safe mode ok?I'm having the same problem, computer starts fine but nothing comes on the monitor and their is a beeping noise, the same noise that comes on when I boot up, but this is hanging

All I did was open the tower and i started unplugging anything that would and insert back on just as fast, help??

You have probably damaged expensive components doing so...things shouldn't be unplugged in a PC with the power on.
Start a new Topic and give as many details as you can about the machine.when i restart again the black screen with all the instructions comes, whether u want to start in safe mode, in normal mode etc. then i CHOOSE to start with normal mode & its OK then. there is no such beeping sound. i think battery is OK. If boot file is corrupt, how to repair it. is there any way to diagnose this problem?Have you installed any new programs lately? Do you have your windows cd?
Can you post the error message?
Boot your computer up and tap F8 as it starts up. That will take you back to that black screen. Here, choose "Disable automatic restarts on system FAILURE". This will allow you to see the error the next time it happens, write it down and post it here.

Quote
List as much about your computer as possible. This includes operating system (what version of Windows you are using), service packs, computer make/model, RAM, hard drive, sound and video cards, current adware/spyware/virus programs being used on a regular basis, do you have a "real" Windows CD, etc.
Thanx, I will let u know...Now the following error reporting is coming:

Error

Boot with your XP CD in the drive.
Make sure the BIOS is set to boot to CDROM first.
At the first prompt screen press R to enter the Recovery Console.
It will ask which install you wabt to repair...you should only have one...highlight it and hit Enter.
When the console finishes loading you will be at a Command Prompt...type in fixboot and hit Enter.
Remove the CD and re-boot the machine.

Solve : System32/digest.dll problems?

Answer»

i dont know if this is even related to my problem i have now, but lately my desktop(dell dimension 2400) has been slowing down.  I figured it was the ram dying because ive had the bluescreen in the past and it seemed as though it was related to hardware.  but it wasnt REALLY a problem until the last couple of days.
so now i cannot connect to the internet with that computer. it is hooked directly to a linksys router and modem which both WORK FINE, this laptop is connected to the internet wirelessly and it works fine.  i TRIED using comcast's 'desktop doctor' but i got an error message saying : 'the application or DLL C:\\windows\system32\digest.dll is not a valid windows image. please check this against your installation diskette.'
i tried again and now it just SAYS: verifying connectivity...failed!
so i scanned my computer with avg 8.0.234 with database: 270.10.20/1943, and all i found was some tracker cookies, deleted them, no results
then i scanned with spybot s&s
it didnt find anything
then i tried running winsockfix
no results either
i tried turning my firewall off , no results, back on, no results
i tried releasing and renewing my ip -- nothing
and i tried unplugging my router and modem and plugging back in, nothing
under network connections it says that i am connected to my local area network
but all websites opened, along with pings sent out fail

anyone have any ideas?digest.dll, located in C:\\windows\system32 is a valid M$ file

Did you try to connect the desktop straight to the modem, bypassing router?

Solve : Cannot Log On?

Answer»

My computer is a HP laptop only about 2 years old, running windows XP professional with no modifications. I use it mostly for going on facebook, and doing homework, I had no virus blocker installed but i was using firefox. My problem first started when i started getting a lot of pop-ups and things were trying to install. I restarted my computer and there were two pornographic ICONS installed on my desktop. I deleted both icons into the recycling bin. The pop-ups continued and i decided to install an old Mcaffe CD i had laying around. It is Mcafee 2005 version 9.0. My virus scans at first returned nothing, so i updated McAfee. The search returned about 34 trojans/worms/viruses. I havent used Mcafee in a while so i accidentaly closed out the virus scan window. I decided to restart my computer to get rid of all the pop-ups so i could focus on the scan. After i restarted i tried to log in. Now when i try to log in, i input my password, then hit enter and it says "Loading your personal settings" it then goes right to another notification that says "logging off" and "Saving your personal settings". Solve : Restoring laptop to original factory settings?

Answer»

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop, I'm going to give it to my brother but I wanted to put everything in his name. I wanted to restore the original factory settings for him as well. I read on one of the posts that I could just hit F10 and it should restore it back to the original settings, I don't have the recovery disk for it and I really don't want to buy one if its not necessary. Can I just use the F10 step without the recovery disk? If so can someone please guide me down the right path to work it correctly.

My other PROBLEM is the CD/DVD drive only runs when I turn the laptop on its side, I've tried to CLEAN the drive, but it still doesn't work unless I put it on its side. Do I need to buy another drive for it?

Thanks for the help.Remember, Factory RESET will ERASE the entire drive and put Windows back on in first-start conditions.

Solve : Windows Xp shows blue screen when booting up and then restarts!...?

Answer»

Hello all!

I am trying to help a friend whose Acer computer has a problem booting up. Whenever he PRESSES the power button, the acer splash screen appears, and then the option of choosing what mode of windows screen appears. No matter which option you choose (safe mode, last known good configuration etc.), the windows loading screen where a blue bar moves from left to right appears for a few seconds and then a blue screen comes saying something about the hardware or hard disk or something like that and then it immediately DISAPPEARS and the computer restarts. Both of us don't have the Windows XP cd...and he hasn't made any recovery discs. The loss of data is not that big an issue with him.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?Hit the pause/break button and write down the entire BSOD message including the mumbo-jumbo and post it here...You may also try this...

If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp, starting below this picture on page 1:
hye all..
can anybody help me...
now i've a problem that cause i cant FORMAT my hardisk...
can anyone tell me how to solve its?Really sorry for replying back this late...but if we follow Broni's advice, will we have to do anything else...like enter the windows product key (its a perfectly LEGAL copy...but i am telling him all this by the phone...so i want to KEEP it as simple as possible)...and also...is there any easier way to do this recovery thing? cause the link which Broni gave is a bit complicated.

thanks for all ur help so far! All your question are answered in linked article.Hello again!

Okay..after going through the article again i found that its not that bad...so i'll let you know what happened when we try the things suggested as soon as possible.

Thanks for ur help and support so far! We'll be here.Hello yet again!

Well, we tried the instructions in the article given, but it didn't seem to work...so my friend told that he would give the laptop to his dad's place of work and hopefully the people over there would sort this out...(maybe we didn't do the instructions right?...) Anyway... I hope I haven't wasted your time and server space (lol)..but I think there isn't any alternative..is there?

Well...Until another problem starts!

Thanks for your help so far! =)
You're welcome No problem.

Solve : reformat and performance problems?

Answer»

my feel is, whenever i reformat the system and install windows, it either runs smoothly afterwards (rare), or have really bad performance (very common). and the computer acting crazy, generally.

i've recently reformatted the computer and have a lot of problems now.

Hardware: P4 3.2GHz, 3GB RAM, ATI 1650 Radeon, 1 X IDE 400GB HDD, 1 X SATA 1TB HDD
OS: Windows XP Home SP3

first problem:
i cant use the account name "Administrator". i checked the "user accounts" section and no such entry exists.

second problem:
the performance after the latest reformat is ridiculous. i cant watch youtube videos on this computer now coz now, it is like a freaking slide show with incredibly low frame rate. i never had this problem before. the frame rate is only bearable if i manually use process explorer to set the PRIORITY of the appropriate chrome.exe process to the "Real Time" setting. in addition, the VIDEO will freeze at some point in time if i play it using full screen mode.

oh, btw, opening Google Chrome costs 40% of the CPU.

flash animations are freaking slide shows. but i can view them on an even OLDER computer.

how do i solve these problems?1. have you INSTALLED latest version of the flash plugin software?

2.try Firefox browser and see if it's any better Quote from: 2x3i5x on August 06, 2009, 11:13:41 AM

Solve : new computer discovery!!?

I kept pressing the F8 key on my T60 Thinkpad laptop and it said " initializing and establishing link". What do I do about that? That's the key to enable WiFi...

If you use a wireless connection it turns the connection on/off.  If you don't have a wireless connection...stop pressing it.after i stop pressing it, it says

"Starting Acronis Loader...
Press F11 for Acronis Startup Recovery Managey...
Unable to load operating system. Press to reboot...

I just want to use my laptop again. On some laptops...pressing F8 along with the Ctrl key enables and disables the WiFi connection.  This is probably why you were getting the "initializing and establishing link" message.

I was under the impression you just DISCOVERED that on your keyboard.  You really weren't too clear, in your first post, what it was you were trying to do.

Continually pressing F8 on boot will boot you into Safe Mode.

Now you're stating that Acronis is loading its Recovery program.

What is it, exactly, you're trying to do?

Can you please give us a LITTLE more information...and describe to us the issue(s) you were having on your laptop before all this started.  KEEP in mind...we can't help you if we don't understand what the problem is...so we need all the information you can give us.it does not work on my comp When I first turn on my laptop, it shows the message about the wifi link. Then, the Acronis Loader message appears along with the phrase

" Unable to load operating system. Press to reboot"

I then decide to put the Acronis recovery disc in so I could end this issue. Next, the disc automatically opens the Acronis True Image Home (full EDITION). This is where I am stuck at because I'm not use to recovering a laptop. Does anybody know how to load Windows again from this?

Solve : Problems on boot up and windows xp?

Answer»

My DESKTOP computer won't boot up properly. It starts and goes through the "vaio" screen and "Intel" but when it starts trying to load Microsoft Windows XP it starts to, and then the screen goes black and it starts the ENTIRE process again. I tried getting into safe mode. It lets me go as far as the safe mode screen where you choose the option and then it goes black and restarts. Any ideas on how to fix this?Do you have your XP CD?

Did you try last known good configuration at the advanced startup screen?

When was the last time you blew the dust out of your computer with a can of compressed air?1.  STOP the automatic restart to get information from the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

Tap the F8 function key once or twice a second as you reboot the machine.  The Windows Advanced Options menu should appear.  Use the up/down arrow keys to select the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and hit Enter.  Hopefully the machine will stop on the BSOD.

2.  BSOD.  Record and post back with the "exact" error message text and/or numbers plus any offending SOFTWARE module it might name.  A google search on these text strings or substrings sometimes provides problem resolution.

3.  What service pack level of Windows XP Home are you operating at, if known?  None, SP1, SP2, SP3?

Try the install with no USB devices.
Also, try install with only the on BOARD video.
maybe i shoud state what was going on.....was running out of room on original 40g....so install 160 as slave.  ran for a couple weeks then had problems (wouldnt boot)  added 1g memory and still wouldnt boot (gets to windows screen with scrolling BAR, then restarts).  i decided to abandon the original hd and start new.  the new drive is an sata.

Solve : Corrupted file or missing file?

Answer»

I have a Dell computer, and running Windows XP. I have had it for 4 years, and have never  had a virus or had to reformat the hard drive.

Now, today, when I start it I get the message,

Windows could  not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this by starting windows setup using the original setup CD Rom
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repairI pressed 'r" and nothing  happens

I pressed Ctrl and f11 and it says it cannot restore
I put the CD I got with the computer, but it won't let it start up. All I get when I turn the computer on is a black screen with that message.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I am taking college classes online and I really really need this computer to work!  I would start with this:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

BTW:  I assume you are using a different computer to access this forum?Yes I am using a different computer. It won't let me get past the black screen to access anything. I even have Norton Go Back and tried that but it says there was no where to go back to.

I'm so bummed...I got 3 more courses in college yet to do...I really needed this computer to last at least until I was done. You have to change your boot order to enable you to boot from your disk.

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ss/bootorderchange.htmI really thought that might work out, but it didn't. I did change the sequence and had the CD rom first, but it still wouldn't boot from it.

I would get this message:

Alert! OS Install Mode enabled. Amount of available memory limited to 256MB.
Strike the F1 to continue, F2 to run the set up utility.

So, I tried F1 first....and it would try to reboot but came up with the original screen and message about missing or corrupt file.

Then I tried F2...and it just took me back to the utility setup again.

Thanks for trying to help me though I really appreciate all the time.http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/SC1425/en/it/j3350c20.htm
Scroll half-way down to "System Messages".Thanks for replying.

I went in and read what you sent me, but I did go into the setup utilities and turned the os install off but when it would reboot it would be right back on with the same message.

Thanks for trying though.

After running back through my mind, the night before this happened, I had my office 2007 freeze up on me, and I hit the ctrl alt delete to close the programs. it wasn't closing them, so I went into PROCESSES and clicked on dump? which was running and ENDED that process. I wonder if I ended something else which might of caused this problem? Who knows...teach me to mess with stuff I don't know. That shouldn't mess anything up, because it simply shut down some process for the current Windows session.
What is the CD, you're trying to boot with?I have tried two different CD's one came with my dell and one came with my hubby's dell laptop.

first one says: Operating system for reinstalling DVD and Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Version 2005 with Update Rollup 2

second one came with my dell computer :
Drivers and Utilities for reinstalling V.9x(Capable) 56K Data/Fax Modem Software for Microsoft Windows.

I have a third one that I haven't tried to install that says:
Application for reinstalling CyberLink Power DVD 5.3 1012 software

I didn't get a operating CD with my desktop computer like the hubby got with his dell. Could that be the problem?? Quote

Operating system for reinstalling DVD and Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Version 2005 with Update Rollup 2
You can't run Windows repair with the above CD.
Did the above CD come with your Dell? Is your Windows XP, Media Center Edition version?I have no clue...

I just found a PAPER that says my computer doesn't come with an operating system cd or drivers cd. It says if I ever need to reinstall software I need to either order a copy of the operating cd or drivers or a Microsoft windows system restore or dell pc restore.

*censored*....that sucks...I've had this computer for 4 years, so I guess I shouldn't complain...probably extinct now and can't get the software...ha ha

Thanks for helping me out!Contact Dell, you might be surprised.  They do have good customer support and may still have a copy of the software.  They usually only charge shipping on older machines software. If you have Windows CD...(if you don't have Windows CD, scroll down <-----you)

1. Insert your Windows XP CD into your CD and assure that your CD-ROM drive is capable of booting the CD.
2. Once you have booted from CD, do NOT select the option that states: Press F2 to initiate the Automated System Recovery (ASR) TOOL.
You’re going to proceed until you see the following screen, at which point you will press the “R” key to enter the recovery console:

3. After you have selected the appropriate option from step two, you will be prompted to select a valid Windows installation (typically number “1″).
Select the installation number, and hit Enter.
If there is an administrator password for the administrator account, enter it and hit Enter (if asked for the password, and you don't know it, you're out of luck).
You will be greeted with this screen, which indicates a recovery console at the ready:

4. There are eight commands you must enter in sequence to repair your problem..
NOTE. Make sure, you press Enter after each command. Make sure, all commands are exact, including "spaces".
These commands are as follows:

CD..
ATTRIB -H C:\boot.ini
ATTRIB -S C:\boot.ini
ATTRIB -R C:\boot.ini
del boot.ini
BOOTCFG /Rebuild

Note about the above command.
BOOTCFG /REBUILD command which searches for pre-existing installations of Windows XP and rebuilds sundry essential components of the Windows operating system, recompiles the BOOT.INI file and corrects a litany of common Windows errors.
It is very important that you do one or both of the following two things:
A.) Every Windows XP owner must use /FASTDETECT as OS Load Option when the rebuild process is finalizing.
B.) If you are the owner of a CPU featuring Intel’s XD or AMD’s NX buffer overflow protection, you must also use /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN as an OS Load Option.
For the Enter Load Identifier portion of this command, you should enter the name of the operating system you have installed.
If, for example, you are using Windows XP Home, you could type Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition for the identifier (it's not crucial, however what the name is, as long, as it's MEANINGFUL).
Here is your computer screen:

5. Following command verifies the integrity of the hard drive containing the Windows XP installation. While this step is not an essential function in our process, it’s still good to be sure that the drive is physically capable of running windows, in that it contains no bad sectors or other corruptions that might be the culprit:

CHKDSK /R

6. This last command writes a new boot sector to the hard drive and cleans up all the loose ends we created by rebuilding the BOOT.INI file and the system files. When the Windows Recovery Console asks you if you are Sure you want to write a new bootsector to the partition C: ? just hit “Y”, then Enter to confirm your decision:

FIXBOOT

7. It’s time to reboot your PC by typing
EXIT
and pressing Enter.

With any luck, your PC will boot successfully into Windows XP as if your various DLL, Hive, EXE and NTLDR errors never existed.

If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow instructions from Step #3 above. Thanks! I can download and burn it on my hubby's puter. That would work!
I am also contacting Dell to see about getting help also.

Thanks so much!Keep us posted....

Solve : Computer restarting while turing on?

Answer»

I have a 2 1/2 year old Compaq Pressario V6000 laptop and I am running XP on it.  When I turn it on it GOES to the blue XP starting up page. Before reaching the log in screen, the computer restarts and CONTINUES on a loop like this. I have TRIED starting it is the previous setting that worked and SAFE mode but it continues to do the same thing.

I have no idea what may be wrong with my computer so any diagnosis or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

ThanksJam on the F8 key on your keyboard while it's starting.  You should get a startup menu.

Select "Disable automatic restart on system failure."

What should happen after this is the dread "Blue Screen of Death" (BSOD).

It could be a few different things causing this.  When was the last time that you CLEANED out your computer, I mean from dust and related debris. Quote from: Quantos on July 31, 2009, 01:50:55 AM

hey guys, I've got a floppy disk full of old files with unknown file extensions..They belong to my father and I'm just trying to figure out what program I should use to open the files, but I can't do that unless I know what file extensions I'm WORKING with..

Using Windows XP, I'll right click on the files to SEE what the extensions are but nothing shows, only the name of the file shows... When I go into Folder Options, to make sure File Extensions are not hidden, the box is already unchecked...

Try to open a file with notepad.  Notepad will safely open most files.

At the windows level, double click the icon for the file.  XP will find the correct program to open the file.

No, it is possible to make files without extensions. Inside my attachment is a file without an extension. (Sorry, had to put it in a zip since the boards won't allow me to upload it without an extension.)

Normally, a file with an unknown extension will give you the choice of using the web service or choosing from a list. A file without an extension will just go directly to the list. It doesn't offer the choice since going to the web service would be pointless anyway.

By default, Windows XP will show the extension of a file if the extension isn't associated with any program. If the file isn't associated and Windows isn't showing the extension, that's usually because there isn't one.

[attachment deleted by admin]quaxo,

We are back to STEP one.  If there is no extention, how do determine if the file is .txt .doc . . .?  How do we open the file without an extention?

If we do determine the type of file, can we rename the file and add the extension?

Then the renamed file should open?

These questions may have been answered above?

I Opened the sample file with notepad.  Would there be a problem when the file is not a .txt file?sorry about the hold up......I'll email my dad and get him to open some of the files so we can unravel the mystery

he's 50 miles away at the momentSure, you can add, remove, or change an extension. That file I attached was just a text file until I removed its extension, then Windows didn't know what to do with it anymore. If you added the .txt again, it would open in Notepad again. If you added some other extension, Windows would attempt to open it with a different program, even though that's not really what the file is. Like if you changed it to MP3, Windows would try to open it with the default MP3 player, but the player would come back saying the file was corrupt or something as it has an MP3 extension, but the contents of the file don't match what the program was expecting.

Determining what the file is without the extension is mostly trial and error. First place to start is usually trying to open it in Notepad or some other text editor.Well if it's a zip it has an extension...
Or am i missing the point ? .

Solve : Help Me Please!!?

My computer froze out of nowhere a few days ago and now i can not go pass the the windows loading screen. I have tried ENTERING safe mode but it doesn't work. I have lots of important data on my HARD drives too. I also tried booting from the windows CD but that didn't work either. I cleared the BIOS and got on to my computer but after half an hour it froze again. What should I do? Should  I reinstall windows? Will that lose all my data? Thanks for helping! Sorry for asking all these DUMB questions. How did you clear the BIOS?if you have your windows cd you can do a repair install and should not lose any personal data.i took out the battery from the motherboard and then put it back in to reset the BIOS. i tried using the windows CD but it STOP loading after it tells me to press any button to continue. thanks for replying Quote

No question is dumb on here.

Do you get any error messages, or does it just freeze up?There were no error messages, it just froze up all of a sudden. Should I transfer my data to another computer and then reinstall windows? Would that be easier to do?

edit: I remember receiving this one message with something with cc+ or something like that, but that was before my computer froze. Go into BIOS and set your CD drive as the first boot device and then SAVE CHANGES. You may see a message that says press any key to boot to CD. Then follow the instructions from here:

Solve : no sound and network (windows xp)?

Answer»

I have a Biostar NF-61S Micro 754 MOTHERBOARD (Nvidia GeForce 6100 chipset) and after the SYSTEM crashed (and it was reformatted), I did not get any sound from the onboard sound and I did not see the icon on the system TRAY that says:

Status: Connected

Should I install separate LAN and sound cards?

Solve : Install Windows XP from Hard Drive Partition?

Answer»

I've got a laptop with a failing CD drive. I need to get another one, but I don't have the money at the current time to get one. However that's not my MAIN problem.

The real question is that I need to reinstall Windows. Badly. Mostly everything is broken (including Search and Internet Explorer) and it takes forever to boot. Only a few programs actually still work properly. The only real solution I've seen is completely reinstalling Windows, which I'm perfectly fine with. But without the CD drive, I obviously can't. I got the idea of making a CD image of the XP INSTALL disk from another computer, copying it to the laptop, and installing it from a partition on the HARD drive. The only problem is that I don't know how. I already have a 4 GB partition on the computer, which should be SUFFICIENT for an XP install disk. I'm just wondering if its possible. Thanks.

If not, I've also heard you can install Windows from a flash drive (not to a flash drive). If anyone has details on this also, it would be very much appreciated. I miss having a fast, fully functional computer.

DemacheSince it's a laptop why not just visit the manuf. site and follow the instructions for running the Recovery from the hidden partition ? ?This one doesn't have a recovery partition. The only way to recover it is through a CD. I think it got wiped when I reinstalled at some other time (really nasty trojan).

Solve : Won't load pass logon screen in safe mode?

Answer» HI!
When I try to load into safe mode, my COMPUTER will restart automatically after I choose either the admin or my account on the logon screen. What could be the cause? For your info, I'm using WINDOWS xp pro sp2. Thank you in advance. What happens when you do not go for the safe Mode?

If you have the XP installation disk, try the repair option.  If done carefully and correctly, you should not loase any personal files or system files.

The repair option might not be available.  Read the FOLLOWWING Microsoft article:

Solve : XP Continuous Reboot?

Answer»

While running Check Disk (via My Computer/ C:/ Properties/ Tools) my computer was rebooted by an impatient family mbr.  Now when the computer gets to the Windows XP logo screen it reboots itself, XP never loads.

Tried the system recovery console and ran the HD and memory test which all pass.  Tried booting in safe mode, safe mode w/command prompt, and last known good config; computer still stuck in rebooting loop.

Made a 3.5" boot disk and tried copying the files to a cd (no floppy drive in non-working computer) but some files wouldn't copy to the cd correctly.

Put in the reinstallation CD and was able to access DOS (at least APPEARS to be) and was prompted to choose either I386 or MiniNT; tried both and saw for each:
I386:  5771 files, 481 MB, 1.07 GB Free.  All of my XP files are here.

MiniNT:  23 files, 1.2 MB, 1.07 GB Free.

I ran "dir" for both and were able to access approx 2 dozen DOS commands for each.  Ran chkdsk; seemed to run thru it just fine, no errors were shown.

There are other commands (bootcfg, fixboot, fixmbr, listsvc, mkdir, etc...) but I'd like to "fix" the problem if possible without having to wipe the HD clean and end up losing DATA.  Not a DOS expert and afraid of wiping the HD by mistake so I haven't gone beyond running chkdsk.

Thinking about trying:
Placing good 3.5" floppy drive in non-working computer and try booting w/the boot disk.
Pulling HD from non-working computer and place in working computer, then try to copy/paste data from non-
working HD to the working HD.  Not sure if this would work.

Searched multiple forums and Googled until my eyes CROSSED; didn't come up w/anything useful.  Any advice would be much appreciated!

Two wimpy PCs in your hand is better that one super PC on the bench.
If you have another PC that can
cn read the HDD of the sick PC you can recover any important STUFF you have before your have to re format the drive.
I use a IDE to USB adapter for things that do not fit in my SFF case.

Got it on eBay for under $20 with power supply. Wrks on SATA too! And Laptop drives.. (Mouse and mouse pad are for size estimation.)
I'm able to access the Recovery Console but C:\WINDOWS isn't a choice, only H:\I386 and H:\MiniNT; I386 has all the XP files.  Ran chkdsk /r on both for good measure, neither showed any errors.  Also ran chkdsk /p which both ran fine.

Need to read up on bootcfg, fixboot, and fixmbr to see what they do, I don't want to inadvertently wipe the HD.  If no progress I'll install a 3.5" floppy and try booting with a boot disk and/or try recovering data from the HD by placing in another computer.  All else fails, reload.

Thanks for the help; I'm open to other suggestions if there are any.

e-mail addy removed to prevent SPAMI would just rebuild the computer.. Its quicker fixboot and fixmbr will not wipe a drive...Tried many things, none worked.  The only thing left to try now is copying files to another hard drive.  To rub SALT in the wound, the bad hard drive is SATA and my other is IDE; guess I'll be ordering a SATA/IDE to USB kit.Have you hooked it up in a working machine as a slave drive to retrieve your data ? ?
Surely your not gonna give up this easily...The HD I'm having trouble with has a SATA connector and my other computer has an IDE connector.  I called around and can't find a SATA/IDE adapter cable nor a SATA/USB cable.  Went on eBay and found a SATA/IDE/USB kit w/pwr supply for $13.

If it works then great; if not, oh well.
