2.00 GB of RAM. Norton 360.(up to Date). Have REAL window xp pro CD. 300 Gb hard drive (seagate)

Hello to any one that can help
my problem started when I was burning a CD (from windows media player) the computer shut down and restarted to the Blue screen (CHKDSK) after it went through it three steps to check Hard Drive, it found the following problem. Corrupt Attribute Record (128,"") computer started up like normal. tried to burn Cd again, same thing happen. then restarted normal. so I decided to do a MANUAL restart. when I did, Computer started with all my saved files, music, and all personal setting gone,(computer was at new computer stage, like when you first put new system on. needless to say HORROR! HORROR! HORROR!. But now for the strange part, all of my software is still on computer but I can not save any thing. when I restart, it starts like new again, any changes I make are lost. on the start up window, I get the following Message: can not fine personal profile, will sign with temporary setting but all data will be lost.
computer works find as long as I don't turn anything off. I am looking for any input before I reinstall XP
Thanks. Alberight.
Personal notes: I BUILT this computer myself in 2006 have not had any problems until now. I am knowledgeable about problems but this is a first for me. I upgrade all the time. this may be a problem. Help.
What burning app ? ?
Is Norton (shudder) GoBack included in your package and turned on ? ?I was burning a music disk.Great.
That ANSWERS neither of the questions...Window media player was the burning app. I had all of my music on windows music player. and was making copy of music. Ok. And no this copy of norton does not have the back up. Quote

Corrupt Attribute Record (128,"")

Sounds like a failing hard drive to me. Or flaky motherboard HDD controller. But my money's on the HDD.

Solve : Windows Root>\system32\hal.dll. missing?

Answer»

Hello everybody:
Well let me start Yesterday, I worked all day... on this computer, ok off and on..... Anyways, I have a triple boot. Linux 64bit- Linux 32 bit- Win Xp. While I was partitioning I had found the partitions were not staying at the set dimensions.. after I fresh Installed XP I went BACK in to work on the partitions. I moved my Xp Partition to the begining of the HDD. When I booted after that, Win refused to start it said that my ROOT>\system32\hal.dll. file was missing. Now I know the reason for this is because it got lost when I moved the partition. Does any one know what my next move should be, I could go and find it and install it, But I have read that it is not always the best solution. Additionally I don't want to wipe the xp partition and start again because I had to call micro this time to install because I have had it installed to many times over the past 7 years.  currently xp is the only OS that is not working everything else is functional. Well I will leave this here for now Thank you everybody...
cbarnardMoving partitions ? ?
How are you doing this and what app are you using ? ?

And what do you mean that the partitions weren't staying at the set dimensions ?

That HDD may be the culprit here...bad controller perhaps. Quote from: patio on February 07, 2009, 08:33:46 AM

Originally I had mint before the xp partition.  The software I was using was partition commander and ACRONIS partition suite... I don't remember specifically which one I used. it was late and I was tired... I set the dimensions at 15gigs for both mint and XP  The mint partition was not 15gb, so I wanted to resize it but because xp was in the way I deleted the partition for mint, then moved xp over to the beginning of the HDD, then I created new mint 15gb. but in the move I lost the hal.dll. file.  Yea I know my hard drive is old and I will be upgrading it here soon but I just don't have the money yet. all TESTS and diagnostics I have run on the drive have come back with out any errors, I was using Western digital diagnostic tools for this. I hope this is enough to help...

Never a time to start messing with partitions...but we already know that now.
Missing hal.dll infoThank you patio:
Your link was good, I was able to FIX the hal.dll file. But now I have to figure out how to rename the file. When I select win xp from my boot menu. it then asks which one I want to boot. When I named it I put a one, and there was still the REGULAR Microsoft Win XP selection, which still doesn't work, I haven't' thought about it much right now, but I want to rename the file to Microsoft win Xp and delete the link to the non working section... Thank you

Solve : problem installing windows xp?

Answer»

If I have a ghosted image on a windows xp crash disk, and i use that image to ghost a different configuration, will it still work?

Personally, i'd have to BELIEVE, that it would not work. Because if it did, why would the mfr's bother bundling an oem specific crash disk in the 1st place. anyone know?

I've used ghosting in the past but it was in an ENVIRONMENT where EVERY system in the room had the exact same hardware configuration. I never had the need to TRY it on differing SYSTEMS, besides all the hardware in the stockroom was the same.

So, I figured, why not come here, and ask all of you experts if it can be done, without telling you that it was a crash/restore disk in the 1st place.

Except, ooooops, it seems i let the cat out of the bag
If it's an OEM Ghost CD it will only work on the machine it shipped with in 95% of the cases...
This is by design.

Solve : no bios screen on bootup?

Answer»

After reformatting hard dribe I reinstalled xp PRO after virus attacked dos. After INSTALLING xp pro and restarting I have a blank screen and am unable to ACCESS anything. I would SUSPECT something went wrong with the re-installation. Can you boot in Safe Mode?  Tap F8 while re-booting.less im misunderstanding. all you did is reformat using software, reinstall software, and reboot

'delete' key these days at startup right?   and you cant get in there?    nothing but pitchblack screen?  This is after on, before "boot" where you can verify drives, boot ORDER, etc.   'cant get in here?"

Solve : need help please, more info included?

Answer»

i have recently PUT my pc online for the first time while running live updates it restarted and will not let me in, error msg says that a problem has ocurred and windows can not verify a licence for the software. i am running xp sp2 prof. i dont have the cd anymore but do have the stickers on the side of pc. its a hp intel pent 4 with 1024 ram. can i fix this with out LOSING data?only if you were downloading the latest service pack (3), you can get 100% FREE support from Microsoft for this issue:
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=11273&gprid=522131

If you were not going for sp3, Microsoft has a barrage of error codes associated with your primary SYMPTOM:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914232

Either WAY it does seem the general consensus is to go the 'press F8' at startup route, select, boot in safe mode "without network support"

At which point you can make the required repair/file replacement as directed.

Hope this helps.

Solve : Something changed the behavior of the desktop?

Answer»

Any and all open programs disappear behind the Start button ( tool bar ) when i minimize them and can't find an icon on the tool bar like there was a week or so ago. So now even Skype which pops up over all open windows when a call comes in remains hidden; i can access that program via the task bar but it's a pain trying to answer the phone when doing something else.

The vitals: XPpro Gateway laptop with Athlon 64 2 gig ram, IE 6 and Outllook Express six. All MS updates except IE7 which i don't like. Avira virus protection, Zone Alarm free, and i run spybot at least three times a week along with the full virus scan once a week.

Sometime last week everything started running sooooo slow that i couldn't close anything in anyway including ctrl alt del so i hard closed it. Then a blue screen appeared saying that it need to check THINGS. That took 15 minutes or more. i think it was after that that the tool bar changed and can't figure out if there is a setting that i can reset to make it like it was. i did find one called MSVDM which put a few new buttons to the left of the taskbar but it seems to give me the opportunity to change desktops between one of four that i choose.

Any thoughts on what happened or how to get back those icons on my tool bar? Quote

What did the blue screen say? What "things" you had to check?before i answer the questions you asked
it seems that this answer that i had been WORKING on while researching similar situations on a different browser page ( which as mentioned in my original post; will disappear to place outside the boundries of my screen if i minimumize it, so inorder to go back and forth i now need to make them half size and toggle back and forth between them ) Anyway, i must have been typing and researching too long and was asked to sign back in. After doing that i was presented with a blank page mentioning something about "where i left off" i typed in a few dasks and dots as a subject and a few words in the body and now it is up as a post of it's own. Go figure...

The "blue screne" that comes up is not the kiss of death blue screne although it is the same mono-chromatic color of blue with a full page of "checks" that the computer is going to do. My best guess based on it actually using the term somewhere in the process, is that it is scan disk if i recall correctly that was one of the tools that i used frequently in win 98. So as it goes through this process in numbered sections 1,2,3, and sometimes more, not sure how many but i'm think 4. It performs that task and the screne remains blue but you can see the progress in one way or another, either numbers rolling by or a progress bar. This has only happend to be 2 or 3 times since XP came out. Quote from: Broni on January 23, 2009, 04:10:52 PM

The terms that i used MAY be mac terms although mac used the term "menu bar" for just about every bar top and bottom including sub bars that are often tool bars as well.
On a Win sys the bottom "menu bar" is a composite of many things. On the bottom left is the start button and on the right with the clock and calendar as an anchor is what i've been calling "the task bar" inbetween those two ends is what i also call " a tool bar " and it can be customized with a quick LAUNCH area that can be personalized, and in the middle of it all is a blue space that not so long ago would show how many browser windows that i had open and a seperate counter of wordpad and notepad were open so i could easily toggle between them.
This first change appeared as only one counter that would group programs and you'd have to rotate the counter to come to notepad or back to IE.

If i right click on that "menu bar" i have a bunch of potions but not even in properties can i find something that looks or sounds like what i want to do.

Hope that explained the terms that i used in my first post.

There are too many words to remember them all and it wasn't like i had a choice to pass on this action. i also recall the word "volumns" somewhere in the blue screne experience.

Any suggestions as to where i can find out how to change it back will be much appreciatedI'm so sorry but i'm lost in what your talking about???

Can you maybe like upload an image of your problem i'm lost sorry.http://www.coolnerds.com/XP/Taskbar/xpTaskbar01.gifI know what a task bar is.... I mean a screen shot of your problem because i'm lost in that.Me too Quote from: Kryptonite on January 24, 2009, 04:39:00 AM

That was a BSOD. we need the text from that, if it appears again.

As far as the task bar- the entire thing is referred to as a task bar (merely for convenience purposes- we can't go around talking about the "start menu, quick launch, task, and clock"-bar-, contains the start button, Quick Launch area, the actual task bar , and the system notification area. Anything else besides those are extra toolbars, but aren't referred to as a toolbar, but rather by their name, such as the "address bar".

one possibility to try to restore your taskbar to it's former self would be to first unlock the taskbar, (by right-clicking an empty area of the taskbar and ensuring "Lock the taskbar" is unchecked), Then rightclick again, this time going to the "toolbars" option. Unselect all the options here except "Quick Launch".

Another method of switching applications would be to use the alt+tab key combination- this can make it easier to use the computer while we try to remedy your situation.

The picture that i posted is NOT what happens anymore. Those icon from the center of the "the task bar". Once someone other than myself can wrap their mind around what the problem is i would like to see how to inquire about the same problem with the best choice of words. Although the whole bar may be called "the task bar" the only place that i have ever experienced those icon "buttons" is in the middle of it. And although it may be incorrect i called one of the original members of the PC computer club that i joined when i went over to the dark side. He affirmed that we were taught in the SIGS that the part with the clock to the right was referred to in class as the "task bar" and that those icons were running from start up and eating RESOURSES. But that was then and this is now and i can call it macaroni if it will help explain the problem. i have had it tocked and unlocked although i think you may be on to something because i mostly keep it unlocked. Before i lose everything i typed here i will post this and try the alt+tab to see if it brings up those other windows. No Alt+Tab doesn't bring back those minimized windows....i have no idea where they are or how to get them back. As i have been trying to point out; when i hit the minimize window i can see it disappear down towards the start menu

If i capute screne, which one do i do? basic desktop or one with browser up and running or two or three running but not minimized but half sized? Those should appear in the task bar like the picture i posted should it not?

What is on the blue screne as i also mentioned is a small novel of information....i would have to take a picture of it with my camera and upload it because i'd have to write it on paper then type it out again....hundered words or more is my guess. The only way to create it again is to try to overload the resources and force close it.

Let me know if you've got other idea's....i can tell you the options when i right click the taskbar. Quote

So Patio, do you know what's happened with my task bar? Until that feature is gone you don't know how much you depend on it. Working without it is like pushing papers aside on a real desk to get to the ones underneath; except on a real desk papers don't completely disappear unless the dog eats it.Ctrl+Alt+Delete New Task... Solve : System Recovery restarts computer instead of recovering.....?

Answer»

A couple DAYS ago Mcafee detected the New Win32 virus in my computer.  I go into panic mode and end up downloading AVG and try to get rid of the virus.  So after messing around and getting rid of my system restore checkpoints by accident my sound drivers, internet and various other programs are corrupted.

So I decide the only thing to do is the perform a full system Recovery.

I insert the Microsoft Operating System Disc(for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005) to essentially reset the computer to it's factory shipped settings.  The System Recovery program reads the disc; copies the data and files from the disc; and reformats the harddrives while deleting all of the STUFF that did not come with the computer(like my games, music, pictures, etc.)

So after all that is done, the System Recovery gives the button to restart the computer and I restart it.  However, once it GETS to the a blue screen with some words about Windows beginning set up and asking me to wait, the computer just restarts...before it can get anywhere.  After it restarts, it restarts again, just as the monitor shows the Windows XP icon with the LOADING bar at the bottom and keeps on restarting from there.

Any help?  My computer is a GT5O082 MODEL desktop from Gateway.  The OS is windows XP.
bump for help.

Solve : Windows reboot error 50 Error loading operating system?

Answer»

Hi  I recently reformatted my computer and reinstall windows XP, everything works fine while installing and Windows XP comes up no problem. However when I go to reboot after a fresh install, it goes through the sequence of seeing the motherboard, but then a timer starts counting on the computer and it will not boot BACK up into Windows XP. I tried shutting down the computer disconnecting and reconnecting the hard drives still nothing. However I am able to reinstall a fresh copy of XP, but when I reboot the same problem again.  Does anyone know the cause of the problem?

Here is what it says when I go to reboot RPL-ROM-FCC: 50 Error loading operating system
Is HD present in BIOS?How can you tell? I am thinking it is a Bios problem, when I go to search for the Bios for a MSI motherboard K8T Neo2 V2.0 or MS-7094 it does not show up on there web site. They have similar motherboards, but not my particular one. Do you know where I can download the BIOS?
No, no. You can access BIOS at computer's startup.
When your computer starts, still at the black screen, you'll see at the bottom something like:
Press some key to enter setup
Setup means BIOS.
What computer brand is it?YES I know I can enter into setup, I halfway fixed the problem when I restart now, the computer says Failure to read floppy drive, but if I hit F1 it boots into windows. I WENT and checked the boot sequence and put CD Rom first then the hard drives, but still the same problem. The swicth it back to hard drive first still the same thing happens although I can now go into Windows XP.

I do not have a floppy drive attached to the computer.

I fixed by restoring original default settings in the BIOS. So, all cool now?Not quite yet, when I go to boot it still says failed to load floppy drive press F1 to continue, then it goes to select which version of windows to load. I selected one then it goes into Windows XPTurn off the "floppy SEEK" in the BIOS...
That will take care of one nag...

If you have 2 choices of Windows to boot from then you may want to consider starting over...THANKS for the help, I figure it out when I restored the default settings it selected the floppy drive I deselected it and now it boots fine, as for the two copies when I was having problems I reinstall windows on the C and D drive. It's all fixed now. Thanks for the help.Cool Don't forget to send in the check..... Write my name on it Or just use Chrome and PayPal...

Solve : Ping help???

Answer»

I need help understanding one thing about PING Command??

If you PING a web site of you PING your Network what is going on is this.

Your computer is sending Packits of Data to what ever you PING Networks web sites and so on. Then when the Packits of Data come back to your computer it displays a list of Specs.

How LONG it took for every Packit of Data to hit the Target computer and come back to yours and other stuff like that ok I get this.

But when you PING Localemichine  your computer PINGS itself.
But if you are not on a Network then it just PINGS itself but how does it do this??

What I meen is does your computer just PING it's Internale Componets like RAM  PCI SLOTS or what??

Because your not sending Packits of Data out of the computers ports so how does it PING itself?

ThanksSIGH.

ping is a network command. it pings itself because LOCALHOST is aliased to 127.0.0.1Hey nymph4, you ever think about getting a book about computers?Ok I have been looking at a lot of Documents on the net about PING and I don't understnd one thing and I know they both have something to do with one another.

When you get your Ping Reply back it will tell you
TIME = 100 ms TTL = 252

TIME = 100 ms
I know that meens it took 100 Milli Seconds for the Packet to comeback to you.

TTL = 252
I know that meens the PAKET stays around for so long before it Dies.

Does this meen that the Paket Lives for 252 Milli Sconds???

And once a Packet gets sent out and comes back I thhought that is when it was nolonger in use?
Anyone???TTL is a limit placed on the packet so that it doesn't travel a network forever. Usually set by the transmitting system.
For example: You ping an address that the 1st router on it's path can't find, so it's passed onto the next router. That
router is also unable to find that particular address so it too passes it onto the next. Each time a counter is decremented
by one until the TTL = 0. Then the packet dies. Otherwise the NET would have no bandwidth left, it would be overloaded
with addresses (pings or network requests) that were never able to be reached.
Hope that helps.  I am trying to get the hang of PING commands
If I use the ping command
ping -i www.google.com

This will let me set how big in Bytes every Echo will be.

So if I would lik every Echo to be 42 Bytes my command should then be
ping -i 42 www.google.com

Amd I rightOK this is everything I could findout on google  about Ping Please tell me if I have it right??

ping www.apple.com
This will ping the Web Site with Four Packets.

You will get a Display like this.
REPLY FROM 17.254.0.91: BYTES = 32 TIME = 100 MS TTL = 252
REPLY FROM 17.254.0.91: BYTES = 32 TIME = 100 MS TTL = 252
REPLY FROM 17.254.0.91: BYTES = 32 TIME = 100 MS TTL = 252
REPLY FROM 17.254.0.91: BYTES = 32 TIME = 100 MS TTL = 252

REPLY FROM 17.254.0.91: BYTES = 32 TIME = 100 ms
This tells that Four Packets each 32 Bytes in Size were sent to www.apple.com and took 100 Milli Seconds.

TTL = 252
This tells the Packet will going around.

ping www.apple.com -c 10
This will ping the Web Site with Ten Packets or whatever you want.

ping www.apple.com -f
This will send another Packet immediately right after receiving a reply to the last one.

ping www.apple.com -s 45
This will make every Packet sent 45 Bytes you can not go higher then 65,527 Byes.
At last you've found Google

Now please tell us from which site you got your info on Ping.

Entering Ping/? at the Command Prompt in XP Home produces

Solve : dropped from internet?

Answer»

I can be on a site such as moneysmart and look up a stock and the screen appears and I click on an item concerning the stock and it opens that up and then I click on certain of the topics and the internet connection goes away it does it on SEVERAL sites that I visit and has just inthe last 3 or 4 days started that I have restored and it does not fix the PROBLEM.  What could it be?  I have McAfee and I also have avast and they show nothing.  I have xp system.  Thanks for any help.Hello nantom.

Could you tell me what type of internet service you have? (Cable, DSL, Dial-Up, etc.)

Is your computer connected directly to your modem or do you connect through a router?

I have comcast cable.  And it stays on.  Like I was saying on smartmoney for instance, I look at the stock and then lets say I click the latest news it will go to news and then I go back and click on ratings and for some reason it will ALWAYS cut off on ratings but not on something else, and if I go on Scotttrade and click on the ticker  showing the up to date prices it will cut off there.  Some things work with no problems but the sites that have a problem it always cuts me off the internet on the same issues.OK. Since you have cable, which is always on, you have to explain better, what you mean by "cut off".Or post a link so we can test the site...    What I mean is that instead of going to the item I click on the firefox page that I am viewing it on goes away and I have to log on to the internet again.  That is as clear as I know how tosay it.How do you log on to internet with cable connection?   I maybe using the wrong term for that what I mean is the firefox page goes away and I have to click on my firefox icon and it opens back up again.Firefox closes?thanks anyway.??Firefox must have closed on him again...  Lets try again with this, I do have cable and when I want to go to the internet I click on my Firefox MOZILLA icon and the home page opens up sometimes and does right, and then I can go to other sites and click on an item to read and then the home page goes away for no apparent reason and I have to click again on the Firefox icon to open the page back up, and that has been occuring more and more each day for the last 3-5 days.  Now it is starting to close the homepage as soon as it opens.  I have tried restoring but that does no good, I have Avast and McAfee and they show nothing.  What could it be, a setting or ?  ThanksThere's your problem right there...you are running 2 Anti-Virus apps...
Pick ONE and dump the other.Sounds to me more like a browser issue. Try Internet Explorer or Firefox in safe mode. Can you explain what you mean by "goes away" (window becomes blank? Firefox closes?) and "log on to the internet again" (connect to your ISP using the username and password they gave you?). Also you shouldn't use more than one anti-virus program at the same time, I suggest getting rid of McAfee.

Solve : XP hard drive mounted into Vista machine?

Answer»

I recently had a problem with our HP XP machine, and could not get it to come up.  In my "infinite wisdom" I purchased a New Vista machine.  I then removed the XP hard drive and installed it into the Vista machine.  It appeared to read all files, but we didn't get all DATA or photo files that we knew were there.  Am I missing something or is there a loss of data?  All searches for jpg files only return older files, nothing recent.  Can anybody help with this?  THANKS...It will not boot on another machine because it is looking for the old hardware...
But you were almost there:
Hook it up as a slave drive.

Hello WDH.

Are you now running Windows XP or Windows Vista?

If you are running Windows XP, when you installed the Windows XP hard drive into your Vista machine, did you have to reinstall or repair Windows XP?

Were the files you lost stored in the 'My Documents' folder of a Windows XP user?

I understand the situation, I just don't like to assume.

Sorry I'm LATE in getting BACK to all of you.  Here are the paticulars:  I had an HP Pavilion a814x with XP Home installed.  When I tried to upgrade the memory I suddenly could no longer power the HP back up.  The power indicator blinked green vice a steady green.  I reconfigered back to original mem config, but still had same problem.  I pulled the power supply out and it would show a steady green lite with power supply.  I thought that it could be on/off switch or possibly I damaged the motherboard installing the SIMMs.  I had the Vista machine recently purchased, so I removed the hard drive from the HP machine and mounted it in the Vista machine.  I can access the HP drive and see most of what was out there, but have been unable to access most recent photos and some files that were bookmarked and stored.  That is where I'm at, being able to access some data and files, but not all.  I think that this a slaved drive already.  The Vista OS is the boot drive.  I just can't get through my brain what I'm missing about the inter relation between the two OSs, why some data is readily available but other data is not.  Quote
I think that this a slaved drive already.

This needs to be confirmed...are you saying the machine boots to Vista ? ?
If so it's hooked up properly...
When you say some files can't be accessed is there an error message involved ? ?Or folders that won't let you in ? ?
How many user PROFILES were on the XP machine ?
If you go to Documents and Settings folder on the XP drive have you checked ALL users ? ?

Solve : Install Windows XP on Compaq Armada M300 with bootable USB?

Answer»

I bought a used Compaq Armada M300 with functional Windows 2000 3 years ago. In the meantime I managed to install Windows XP as well with a bootable USB drive. I have dropped it on the floor some months ago and it got a nice shock. Now when I want to start it, it sends an error message that notskrnl. exe file is missing.

I wanted to re-install Windows XP to maybe fix the problem but I forgot how I did it:((((! This laptop has NO CD-ROM. I have tried to make a bootable USB but I have no clue how to set in BIOS to boot form USB as it doesn't have that option!

Any suggestions?? TRY selecting boot from Hard Disk. If it's like my motherboard, the USB-HDD option will be hidden in their for some reason.Hi!
I tried that, unfortunately doesn't work ! I am just not getting the Windows Installation up, all I get is the same start-up Compaq logo...you're going into the bios and trying to set up the boot order in there right?Yup, I have to like make the hard drive as first choice, I GUESS. But I am also not sure if my USB is auto-bootable? I came across SO many articles on this and all of them are listing different files that I have to have on my USB for it to start as soon as I start my laptop, bleh... I am SURPRISED if you did install XP from USB as I believe boot from USB option is not supported on a Compaq Armada M300. In any case the specs of these ancient machines, P3 500 or 600 Mhz & 64MB RAM (most models), would make them marginal for XP. Even more so if it has been dropped!

You can buy CD-ROM and -RW drives for this model but is the expenditure worthwhile? (a NEW drive might roughly equal the value of the machine)

Solve : Run-time error '8012' The device is not open?

Answer»

I sweeped a PC (windows XP, sp3) with CCleaner (V2.23.999) with all options choosen, i.e. also on the appications tab. After I ran that PROCES a button in an ms-access-2003 application program no longer works. The button is supposed to RING a phone number out thru an ISDN-phone device. The other way around is also implemented: i.e. when a call comes in the acces-application displays information from the caller that is stored in the database.

When hitting the button you get the message 'Run-time error '8012' The device is not OPEN'. Before the CCleaner run the program functioned well. No other changes were made to the PC, program, configuration etc.

The VBA-coding in access calls the program dial.exe with parameters. When running dial.exe with those parameters on the command line that seems to work FLAWLESS.

In Access the object library ARION Isdn controls V1.0 is loaded to enable communication with the isdn-device over the com3-port.

Would anyone know what possibly can have gone wrong with the ccleaner-run? Or know how I can trace the fault spot?
Go to Start/Run and type in services.msc....
See if the Human Interface Device service is disabled...if so enable it.

Solve : Problems adding freeware font to XP OS?

Answer»

I downloaded a freeware group of fonts and did the following:

Start>Control Panel>Fonts>File>INSTALL New Font

I went to the folder I stored the fonts in and clicked on the font I wanted to add to my OS.  When I clicked on OK, I get two boxes: 1) an Install Font Progress BOX and then over that 2) Window Fonts Folder box which says: "The True Type file is currently being used and cannot be replaced.  Wait until Windows is finished using the file, and then try again."

When I click on OK for the second dialogue, the first box immediately goes to 100% (installed) but it does not show up as a choice in Word or Photoshop (where I really want to use it).  Why am I getting the message saying Windows is using the font file?becuase you have a font with the same name already installed. So renamed the new font. Like if it was Tahoma, call it Tahoma2.I don't understand either of these responses.  If I already had the font, why would I download it again and not just use it? I don't already have the font.

And I can open the font file when I right-click it and choose "open".  It is a True Type file that seems to WORK correctly.Where did these fonts come from ? ? Quote from: jonnyD on October 04, 2009, 09:40:14 AM

If I already had the font, why would I download it again and not just use it?

Why are you asking us?

That is what the error message means. What is the font, where did you get it, etc.

ALL fonts can be opened with "open" since that opens the font directly without adding it to the fonts list and displays the preview.Proper Method of installing Fonts.I found the solution when I was trawling around Google: the user on my computer did not have administrator rights.  As soon as I added administrator rights, voila!, the font was added to the fonts folder and I used it immediately in Photoshop.

Solve : autoplay/autorun?

Answer»

Hey, guys.

OK.  Having problems with autoplay on XP.  Basically, it stopped
working then it started working again, then it started working very strangely - for instance if I put an audio cd in the drive, ITUNES TRIES to import it, even though itunes is not the designated music program that I use.  And of course, I dont get the menu up that lets you choose what you WANT to do.

I've tried pretty much everything I can think of.  Checked out all the registry fixes, TweakUI and Autoplay fix wizard.  The wizard said that there is a problem but that it couldnt fix it.  I've also tried updating the driver and reinstalling the drive, none of which seems to work.

I would appreciate any thoughts anyone has on this - cheers guys

feenixWhat third party utilities do you have installed that may effect cd operations (ie, CLONECD).The only one that has ever given me any grief is a free version of jetbee I downloaded.  I've always been ABLE to repair autorun through the registry though in response to whatever jetbee has thrown up.

Solve : gateway desktop 500 makes hard drive noises and is slow?

Answer»

I just reinstalled my OS on the computer, because the computer was quite slow.  It has 384 MB RAM.  But even after the INSTALL programs take forever to load on it or get uninstalled, and there is a near constant noise from the HD I think or the CPU or something (you know the noises the computer makes when it is doing something like browsing to a page or opening an explorer window)

It cant be a VIRUS since I just did a clean reinstall, so why the computer acting slow
Quote from: shashgo on October 01, 2009, 09:08:24 AM

It has 384 MB RAM.
That's your first problem. As for the noise, two thoughts:

1) If it's a clicking or grinding noise from the hd (unlike anything you're used to), the hd is dying
2) If it's just the sound of background processing, open task manager to the processes tab, sort on the cpu column and see which process is active.allan:

I DONT see any unusual processes running in task manager

by the way, what should the RAM be for win XP
Quote from: shashgo on October 01, 2009, 03:07:28 PM
allan:

I didn't tell you to look for unusual processes, I said to sort on the cpu column and see what is using the processor.
And what do you mean "what should the ram be"?Minimum 512 Mg...so should I run the tool at crucial.com to see what kind of memoory I need and what is the maximum that is supported by this mootherboard?
sureallan,
I did that but according to the info, I have the max amount of RAM already.  Anyway I browsed over to a microsoft webpage at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314865
and this is what it says

The minimum hardware requirements for Windows XP Home Edition are:

    * Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended)
    * At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended)
    * At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk
    * CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
    * Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible POINTING device
    * Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600)or higher resolution
    * Sound card
    * Speakers or headphones

So then it isnt the ram that is the problem, cause I need only 128 MB recommended and I have 384 MB.  I checked in my computer properties, the processor is 498 MHz, HD is 40 GB.You really should get more RAM in that machine. What is the make and model of your motherboard?

I would also suggest you get the manufacture tools for your hard drive and test your drive.....

BACKUP your data....
The required specs. are far below what something needs to run well. 512mb of RAM is a must for XP. Your MBoard maxxes out at 384Mg of RAM ? ?
Why not post some of these machines specs as you may be banging your head against the wall trying to get it to perform.

Solve : No disply on monitor?

Answer»

When I start my computer, ther is no display in monitor.Monitor power green light will be lit for 3 - 4 seconds and CHANGE to AMBER light. No message displays over screen. What COULD be possible reasons, whether its VGA is gone or some other reason.

VGA is built in. Power supply is new( I tried with new power supply)No beeps sound. Could you please advise

You need to find out if the problem is with the display or the system. The easiest way to do that is to try the display on a different system (or a different display on your system). My  monitor is Ok , working with other computer.Problem is with the system itself,It not at all booting, even BOIS also not loading
Is the fan spinning? How far does the boot GET?Processor fan , casing & power supply fans r spinning. When I press start button ,power on green light iluminates to green as well as monitor power on light. But monitor grren light will sustain for hardly less than 10 seconds and monitor become off(amber light) while CPU light remains green. There is no message disply on screen.Initially there will be - line at the top of the screen

OS is XP proffes.  2 GB ram ,Power supply is new.Well, I'm no hardware expert but it certainly sounds like the built-in video card is a fault to me.

Solve : Dell Inspiron 1300 -- Windows XP will not load?

Answer»

I turned my computer off last night.  When I turned it back on, my desktop wallpaper comes up, but none of my desktop icons appear and Windows XP doesn't seem to load.  I can, by opening Windows Task MANAGER, start programs, open files, get on line, etc.

I found the manual in the Dell program file and, following the instructions, performed the Short Status Test.  I got the following error message:

     Fail
     Error code 1000-0146
Msg. Unit 0:DST log contains previous error(s)

After that, I went to the Dell Diagnostics Main Menu and chose to do a Symptoms Test.  Using the symptom tree, I chose the option that CHECKED when the OS would not start.  Here I got numerous error messages in the Read Test and in the Verify Test.

In the test labeled "IDE Disk S/N=WD-WXI306124481 - Read Test" the error messages were always the same:
    Error code: 640F.0244
Msg: Block [a variety of over 70 blocks]: uncorrectable data error or media is write protected

In the test labeled "IDE Disk S/N=WD-WXE306124481 - Verify Test" the error messages were, again, always the same for a variety of blocks:
    Error Code 1A44
Msg: Block [a variety of over 80 blocks]: uncorrectable data error or media is write protected.

Can this be fixed?  As I say, I can get to all my files through Task Manager, and using Task Manager, I was able to save all of my important files to my backup unit.

HELP!

Thanks!
Maryanna
The read and read verify tests that were run on the Dell website SUGGEST that your hard drive is corrupted and thus will not correctly load your operating system. If you try running check disk, your computer may be able to correct the errors on your hard drive.

Since you can access programs using the task manager, the following steps will help you run the utility:

1) From the task manager, SELECT "New Task"
2) Type "cmd.exe" and press "Enter"
3) On the command prompt screen type "chkdsk c: /f /r"
*Note: I am assuming that your hard drive is the C:/ drive, but if you have it partitioned, you may need to repeat
this process for those partitions (i.e., D:, E:, etc.)
4) A message will appear saying that the program cannot be run and asks you if you want this to be run the next
    time your computer is restarted.
5) Type "y" and press "Enter"
6) Restart the computer and the program will begin automatically. Depending on the size of your hard drive, this
could take anywhere from 2-6 hours.

Hopefully this resolves your PROBLEM. If not, your hard drive is past the point of repairing itself and will need to be replaced and have the operating system reloaded.Do not follow the instructions above for running checkdisk. The correct method is to boot to the Recovery Console and run: chkdsk /r

Solve : reinstalling dell windows xp on dell computer?

Answer»

i am in the process of reinstalling the win xp os on a dell computer.  The s etup is to the point of reformatting the disk, but it is going very slowly.  Im wondering what the deal is, its been like half an hour and its just to 5%
Either the Hard drive ISA bad or the CD -drive is bad.
I think it is the Hard Drive.
Just to be sure, check the BIOS settings.
It maybe the BIOS lost lettings. Perhaps the battery is down.
hmm could be . before I started the reinstall the computer would stay in a loop  going from the splash screen to a blue screen that just flashed on and off (no text).

But I was able to succesfully do a USB data transfer from that hard drive to another computer.  So that leads me to believe its not the hard drive.

What should the BIOS settings be?

And even if the format is so slow doesit mean that I wont be able to reinstall completely?
The BIOS should have some way of showing the time and date.
If that is right, or  almost right, leave it alone.
The BIOS should ID the Hard drive.
If it is right, change nothing.
If the BIOS can not correctly ID the drive, this MAY be the end of the trail.
If the BIOS has a choice between high performance or more safe operation, CHOOSE the more safe option.

This is a very old trick I learned from others.
Here is what I do when I suspect a Hard drive is flaky.
Save the data somehow. (You already did that.)
Mount the drive as a slave or second drive in another computer. running XP
Using Windows XP, go into the Disk Management. This is in control panel, Administrative tools, computer management, Disk Management. . Identify the second drive, destroy the partition, create a very small new partition, PRIMARY. Maybe 300mb. Don't format it.
Create another primary, using most, but not all of remaining space. Leave snout 200 MB on the end.

Now format the big partition only. And Wait and Wait, and Wait. Windows will find some bad sectors and map them out. I HOPE it is only a few.
If it was a 20 GB drive I will now have a 19.5GB that is usable.
Without special equipment, I do no know where the bad parts of the drive are located. But statistically for prior experience I guess that it is the beginning and end areas that cause trouble.
If all goes well, I will delete the two small maybe ad partitions.
I put the drive back into the Dell computer.
Later, when the Install CD goes to install, it will ask which partition or space to use. Of course, I select the big one.

The whole point of this is to not use the suspect paras of the drive to install Windows.

I think you might be able to do this with the installer, but the installer is not as easy to use for me. I need a nice graphic display.

Pardon me for such a long post on something that may not work!
Hop this works for you.

any help is appreciated. thanks

but if there are some sectors that are bad, will the install disk stil be able to install xp onto the disk, on the good sectors
Yes.

I'm asking because I don't know if chipset drivers come on any installation CDs.  I had to reinstall the chipset driver on a Dell computer once, but the driver came on an extra CD that came with the computer.I don't get your question...
Usually there is a Recovery CD containing sometimes both the OS and all REQUIRED drivers...
In the other scenario there is a seperate cd labeled Drivers. Quote from: patio on October 06, 2009, 05:34:48 PM

WELL that pretty much answers my question

I just wasn't sure if other required drivers are sometimes included with installation/recovery CDs.  I THOUGHT other required drivers were always on a separate CD.

Solve : Cant run are open exe files?

Answer»

I dont seem to able to run any EXE files that I download ,I just downloaded ITUNES and tried to run it ,the firefox downlad manager opens and it says to open with some application ? I then opened explorer and tried to open it with that with no luck , I did a full virus can and that came up with nothing ,I am running XP home and SP2 ,any help would be much appreciated
Brendanhttp://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htmHi Allen
Thanks for that but I still cant open my exe files , any other ideas for me ?

BrendanDid you download and run the .exe file association FIX?Sure did but still nothing , should I have rebooted after I ran that ?yesnope still not working ,any other ideas for me ?Typically only two things cause this problem: either something changed the file association or malware. We've addressed the first likelihood, so let's go after the second. You said you did a full virus scan. Please download and run a scan with MalwareBytes.

If that still doesn't fix it you can insert the XP CD in the drive, go to START - RUN and type: sfc /scannow and press ENTER. All system files will be checked and replaced with their original versions. If that still doesn't do it we can do a repair installation of the OS.Cant run the MalwareBytes as I cant run the exe file , I tried to do the second task but I got an error saying my CD was an OLDER version of the OS I am running , so I will try and borrow a newer version and try what you told me ,
Many thanks for all your help
BrendanThe XP CD will have to match whatever Service Packs are installed and version...
IE if you have XP Pro w/SP2 installed that's the CD you need...Can you run MalwareBytes (and other .exe's) from safe mode?I tried to run the exe files in safe mode with no luck , I also did the START - RUN and type: sfc /scannow and press ENTER with the XP S/P 3 cd in and still no luck , just wondering if I did a restore might that work do you think ?If you have an XP CD then a repair install is the next step. Boot to the XP CD and choose the second repair option. Done properly, a repair install does not effect installed PROGRAMS or user settings.

This will NOT help if your system is infected, but you said you ran a scan with your AV so let's keep our fingers crossed.I will give it a go ,its driving me mad thanks for you help ,I will let you know the outcome later
A malware expert should have helped you identify and remove this infection before you jumped to a XP repair install as a solution on an infected machine.

There are also precautions to take doing a repair install that were not provided here.

I fear you have already done the repair install and I hope you took steps to immediately scan for malware upon the completion this repair.

With a repair install you also need to check with windows updates upon completion of the removal of the infection to update service packs and such and keeping the COMPUTER offline during the repair install and until the infection is removed and then immediately updating afterwords.

I have more information and links if you need my assistance.

Solve : Master Volume Doesn't work?

Answer»

Hey, I just upgraded my windows 98se desktop (Acer Veriton 3300) to windows XP Pro while my laptop is getting fixed, but a very weird problem just came up - The master volume slider in the volume dialog control doesn't do anything - even the mute all BUTTON! I have to control volume levels from the "Wave" slider. Very annoying, as the volume hotkeys on my keyboard control the master volume slider only!!
I've been GOOGLING and http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080724131719AA0JLNM told me to go to services.msc and set Windows Audio to automatic, but it was already on automatic. Any ideas?this site, http://forum.soft32.com/windows/Master-volume-control-XP-Home-edition-working-correctly-ftopict298145.html is pretty much what i'm looking at. They even have the same sound card as me - Intel integrated audio.

Thoughts?Any ideas at all?Try locating and reinstalling the PROPER drivers?I tried that. When I updated them the new drivers wouldn't initialize the sound card (i GOT error 10 - sound card cannot initialize) so I had to do a driver rollback.

Thanks for the feedback though.

Solve : Help my PC is very slow.?

Answer»

I have an HP desktop with windows XP home edition.I also have fast access, but it is ery slow.I've run virus scans, defragmenter and cleaned out EVERYTHING I don't need, but it is still crawling like a snail.Should I reformat it,as I have nothing on it that is important.Which one is slow, computer or internet? The pc is very slow,I checked with ISP provider and they said problem was with my computer.I ran the CCleaner, yahoo antispy, malwarebytes anti malware and unistalled programs I didn't need with the revounistaller and add or remove programs. The pc is around 5 tp 6 yrs. old, would it make it faster if I reformatted it?I even defragmented and cleaned out cookies and internet files.I have nothing important on this pc and was wondering if reformatting it would help.It is an Hp pavillion desktop and works fine, but is slow as a turtle ,or snail.reformatting would help.  After 5 years its time. OK, one more time, which one is slow, or both?
ISP will ALWAYS say so.
Check your speed here: http://www.speedtest.net/
Post results.
What's your ISP advertised speed?

Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")
- security programs in use (antivirus, firewall)Ok Broni, will get that info early morning for you.ThanksNo problem. You're still not saying, if computer is slow, or the internet is slow, or both...maybe hes not sure My computer is the one that is slow;therfore causing the internet to be slow also.My computer is a HP pavillion 6738,697 MHZ with 256 MB of Ram.I was going to reformatt it,but when I clicked on My Computer then drive C and right clicked on that, all it said was to insert CD for reformatt, and I don't have a startup Cd from HP,so I guess I will have to order one.All I have is a Windows XP home Edition from Dell. Quote
with 256 MB of Ram.

Herein lies the issue...best and most economical solution is more RAM.

Also check to see what amount of Free space you have on that drive.I posted something on my blog at http://mswt.wordpress.com/2009/08/02/hidden-windows-xp-options-to-boost-speed/ and you can make Windows XP faster.I've already done all that you have posted to try and make my PC faster and still slow.I've loated a few recovery disk on ebay, but not sure which one to get.If I get the Windows XP 2000 recovery disk, will that be all I need and will it have all drivers on it.Will I also need that for the # 6738 hp pavillion desktop.I've found a few simular to this #,but it said it was for # 6736 Hp Pavillion. There are many things you could do besides the things you tried i'll give a top ten list

1 disk defragment go to start then accessories then diskdefragment you can see if you need one before you do it by CLICKING the analyze

2 same place in start accesories then disk cleanup I usually check everything

3 go to all of your internet browsers and delete everything mosty just the cookies,      will speed it up like internet explorer it's tools then delete browsing history and in there you can delet cookies are whatever you want,  I will usually check everything

4 i'm sure you heard this all ready so i'll give you some more try downloading ccleaner this will make it easier to delete your internet cookies and history and it also deletes lots of other things that will speed up your computer make sure you only check the things you want to delete.

5 Ok xp has alot of visual effects that slows it down alot more than you might think this speeded up my computer quit a bit even after i did the stuff above ok to do this go to start all programs left click on my computer then properties then advanced then under performence click on settings then click on adjust for best performece don't worry nothing bad will happen
and uncheck everything
but your your computer will lose it's settings so your computer will look like windows 95 are 98 but you can change it afterwards but i don't i'll gladly sacrifice fancy looks for some more speed anyday but just going back to the xp look by left clicking on the desktop then properties shouldn't slow it down to much

6 ok now make sure everything on your computer you don't want is deleted
this HELPS the computer FIND stuff faster because it has less stuff to look threw

7 ok now some antiviruses with live protection can slow down a computer alot more than you think try avira and turn off live protection also download
malwarebytes and superantispyware these are good

8 there are some other things you could try besides antispyware and malware programs like registry cleaners try tweaknow regcleaner and eusing free registry cleaner from CNET you could also download smart defrag from there but with the smart defrag i didn't notice a difference in performence

9 ok go to run type in msconfig and under services and startup uncheck everything you don't want becarefull there are some things in there you want to have for your computer to run properly like in startup i can uncheck with my computer superantispyware  avgnt  readersl  teatimer realschred
qttask now in services you could also uncheck alot of things like with mine i can uncheck google updater service   windows cardspace  java quick starter
windows media player n  (sucurity center optional but i din't want it) also
avira antivir shceduler avira antivir guard google software updater and there are many more i have unchecked make sure you unchech all the things you don't want and not uncheck everything you need some of these things for windows to run properly if you don't know what each thing is google it and it will tell you what it is.

10 now make sure you don't have a bug are virus run multiple scanners like
malwarebytes superantispyware avira hijack this run a microsoft scan. a virus can slow down your computer alot and is usually the only reason a computer might be just as slow as it was even after you did all of these.

11 ok 11 in mycomputer left click on c then properties and uncheck indexing service to index this disk for fast file searching this doesn't help for a faster computer and don't compress the disk to save space then click apply then ok

12 in my computer click on tools then folder options then view then uncheck automaticly search for network folders and printers

And also this helped me alot more than all the stuff above combined with the internet speed get a different browser besides ie8   like firefox are google chrome i would get opera before google chrome and firefox it's fast has more features than google chrome and i think it's faster than firefox and alot faster than ie8

you should really try the visual effects with an older computer diffenitly if it doesn't have a good graphics card
sorry for my bad spelling spellcheck isn't working and I just put this together quickThankyou very much James,I've already done disk defrag, diak cleanup, cookies, browsing history and also have the CCleaner and Malware bytes and ran both of them, but haven't done the my computer and properties,or misconfig things and will chage IE to Opera and see if any better.
Thanks,Free some space.... upgrade the your RAM device, hard disk...

Solve : Windows nag message?

Answer»

Whenever I open Outlook I receive a pop-up from Windows that my XP Pro is not genuine. When I follow their Learn More button it gets me to a site from where I can buy the "genuine" software. The thing is that I bought the genuine software only in March from Microsoft direct and have all the documents to prove it. When I contacted MS they sent me to another site that no longer refers to my software, or to my complaint, but wants me to accept terms of an agreement that does not serve any purpose whatsoever. However, I fear that by doing nothing they will not only continue nagging me, but MAY eventually do something that interfers with the software.
Has anyone out there had a similar problem, and how did you deal with it?Why would you NOT accept the terms of the agreement? Thanks for your speedy reply.
1. I have not the foggiest idea what the agreement could possibly achieve.
2. To imply that I use non-genuine software and to lead me with it to a sales site, is most certainly not a straight approach and, naturally, makes me suspicious.
3. MS's reply did not with one single word address the issue of "genuine" or "non-genuine" software; needless to say they didn't  find it necessary to apologize for their allegation.
4. Why should I trust them? Only because they are MS?
Sounds like the software was never properly registered because you declined the terms of agreement...
It's called a EULA and it is what gives you the legal rights to use the software.
This is nothing new...been around for years.
Of course you could hire an attorney at $150.00 an hour to read and interpret it for you but i suggest if you want to use it without being nagged then simply jump thru the hoops they require...It also sounds to me as though you are making excuses for some reason. If indeed the software is legitimate and you don't want the nag, then you have to acknowledge the agreement. Period. If, on the other hand, there is some reason you are not revealing - well, it's up to you.Hi Allen

they are not excuses but very valid reasons! Is MS too high and mighty to owe their paying customers perfectly reasonable explanations?

They unfortunately make the rules...
And however i may agree with your assessment on how things are you have 2 clear choices:
A) Agree to the Terms of Liscense and get rid of the nag screen...

or
B) Search the web for a free open source alternative to the software you are using.

If it's just an e-mail app you are after i highly suggest ThunderBird as an alternative...from the fine people who gave us FireFox.

That being said i'm done here.I agree with Patio. If you don't like the rules, play a different game.when you start outlook something complains that your version of XP Pro is not legitimate? What is the exact wording? It's possible that this is actually not a popup from MS/Office at all,  but some form of Macro/VBScript outlook virus. (do you get the same popup with any other office application?)

The site MS redirected you too was probably one of their Anti-piracy sites. Standard procedure, I think.

But the thing is- I can see outlook- or another office application (does this occur with other office programs?) complaining about an illegitimate Office installation- but I really don't see them complaining about the OS itself. This makes me wonder if, in fact, this message is being generated by some sort of infection. (this tactic,. (claiming the  OS or application is illegitimate) is commonly used to trick people into buying a program or something similar (or maybe just to cause trouble for MS support STAFF).

So, let's get some details then:

What version of Office/Outlook? (2000,XP,2003,2007...)
What  XP and Office service packs?
Can you get the exact wording of this message? The exact wording is: "This copy of Microsoft Office is not genuine. In 10 days Office APPLICATIONS will be marked as not genuine. Genuine Office helps guard against vulnerabilities that may exist in non-genuine copies. Click Learn More for online details and help IDENTIFYING the best way to get genuine Microsoft Office." I receive it only in Outlook.
When I clicked Learn More it got me to a sales site for Microsoft Office. Since I purchased my software (XP) from MS not so long ago, I eventually found my way to a support address and gave them the details of this purchase. Thereafter I received another email from MS leading me to a site that REQUESTED to accept (or not) terms of an agreement.
Since patio made me aware of EULA this all seems to be perfectly legitimate, and you are probably right that this is one of MS' anti piracy activities. I am now going with a very fine comb through the agreement and perhaps will sign it.
It still think it's bad taste that MS resorts to scare tactics, rather than just sending an email politely asking me to sign up.

Solve : Domain issue?

Answer»

I tried to connect my two laptops together using a network cable. I went into mycomputer and right clicked on properties. Then clicked on the computername tab. It gave me my domain & laptopname. As per instruction I clicked on network id button to search for other laptop. It gave me three options. Work connection, home connection - nothing to do with work , cant remember third. I clicked on the second option. It asked to reboot in order to connect to other laptop. I ACCEPTED and now my work domain is missing from windows log on and it does not accept my username and password.
Message: The system could not log you on. Make sure your Username and Domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters are case sensitive.

How do I check the Domain. The LOG ON TO Windows dialogue BOX does not provide third selection, only user name & password, which it does not accept. Please help urgently - I have much to do, before tomorrow. Are you using a cross over cable?

For this to work you need both machines to have an account with the same name and password and workgroup.

Thanks, HOWEVER that was not the issue. When I CHANGED LT1 to workgroup, I needed to have the Windows Administrator Password at hand. Windows will restart to take settings into account. At this point you will need it. Same with the other. Therefore before attempting to connect two laptops together, by changing the Domain to WorkGroup with a network cable using XP or Vista: I experienced 12 hours downtime.

Solve : windows automatic update?

Answer»

Hi,

I recently re-installed my laptop with my manufactuers recovery CD. After I installed windows, it has the "windows update" ICON in the system tray. I double clicked on it and as expected I found a list of all the XP updates available, as well as IE 8.0.

However I decided to install some other programs first. But after that the "windows update" icon dissappeared. When i go to the windows update WEBSITE, I encountered a few problems.

1st - it SAYS the files needed to windows update is missing or unregistered. So I followed the troubshoot and re-registered them.

Then, I scan my computer again, it took a long time. But it eventually came through. But there was only the "genuine office advantage" update available. No more security patches for XP or IE 8.0. Why is this? How do I get back all those security patches?

Many thanksTry running Windows Update from the Start Menu.

This time let it finish all of them...it will detect any INTERRUPTED ones.
This will probably require one or more re-boots...it will prompt you for them.Just keep going back to microsoft update until it stops finding updates. This can take some time and a few restarts. As I've sad in my email, there are NO more updates available when I search in the Windows Update section. But I know there are suppose to be many cause I saw them before. The most noticeable one is IE 8.0 (i'm still on 6.0) and all those security patches for XP.

I did click on the windows update button from the start menu. It scanned my computer, it only COME up with 1 update; that is the office geniune advantage. I've tried this a few times letting it run till it finish. I've tried this yesterday and I've tried it today (my computer was switched off overnight).

thanks

Go to add/remove programs and list the last update stated there...Matter resolved. Seems like the genuine advantage thing is required before the other downloads.

thanks

Solve : external screen will not work?

Answer»

I have a laptop running Winodws xp pro. It works fine with the regular screen. But not with the external screen. The xp boot screen will show on both the laptop screen and the external screen. After that the external screen goes black, but not the laptop screen..

Please help me! It sounds like "Display Properties" set for the laptop screen (refresh rate, COLOR depth, resolution) are OUTSIDE the range external screen can handle.  While on the laptop screen set display properties to LESS demanding values.  For example:
     o  Refresh rate - 60 Hz
     o  Color depth  - 16 bits
     o  Resolution    -  800 by 600 pixels

Reboot to external screen.  If it accepts those values, you may try to adjust higher.  Do not push refresh rate beyond what the screen is designed to accept.
How do you intend to use the monitors (internal and external SCREENS)?  As a single monitor or dual monitor system?

If dual monitor, will screens be independent of each other or display the same image? Thanks dahlarbear I got it to work!!  !!!!!

p.s. I thank all that RESPONDED to this post. I was kind of a dumb problem. Thanks for the help!Where on earth did you find all those smilies ? ?

Solve : Problems deleting file?

Answer»

I have a file name on my desk top that I cannot delete.  When I try to do so I get the error message "Cannot delete file - cannot read from the source file or disk".  Looking at the file properties it shows 0 bytes.  It seems that I have managed to delete the contents of the file without deleting the title.  I have tried SEARCHING for it with no success.  Help gratefully received.
You should be able to delete it in Safe Mode, now when you are in Safe Mode and after trying to delete it, you still get that message. Just restart your pc and you will see the folder was deleted after all.

Now if it still hasn't gone do this>>>

create a New Folder with the same name & upon creation it also changed the ghost icon into a folder.
I still couldn't move the "ghost" folder but I was able to move the new folder onto the "ghost" folder which swallowed it. Then opening the "ghost" showed the new folder inside. I was then able to delete the whole thingThank you for this reply.  I've done my best to follow it, but still no result.  I'm not familiar with the "ghost" thing, so maybe I'm missing a trick.  At present what ever I do I get the same problem - the SYSTEM refuses to comply because it seems unable to understand as it appears there is nothing on the disk for it to read. This could be malware related.

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue BOX click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in Notepad.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come BACK here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or required by the system.
Download and install UNLOCKER (http://download.cnet.com/Unlocker/3000-2248_4-10493998.html). Go to \documents & settings\username\desktop
If you see the icon / file name there, right-click on it and use unlocker to delete it.Unlocker deletes files? Okay then, that would be the easier option.   Whoopee - Unlocker killed it!  I don't know how much time I wasted on that.  Thank you very much - great result.  Thank you to all who contributed. You're welcome.Last thing - is there a way for me to flag this topic as sorted? You can change the thread subject and add the word "Solved" in front of it, but I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Don't worry if it doesn't have a product key, if it still boots we can find out what it is.
Yes, there's a sticker on it  and it will boot ..doing a clean install was my  first thought   ..However  i thought i would try to save his  installed programs SINCE  some nice ones came  installed when he bought it  and he has no disks for those either Well then...

Solve : Installing XP under unusual circumstances?

Answer»

I didn't know whether to post this as a vita question or an xp question since it involves both.

I have vista installed on my C: drive, and on my D: drive I have XP installed (both are part of the same physical hard drive).

Here is what I want to to:

Remove Vista from the C: drive and install a later version of XP onto the C: drive to replace it.  It is important that I do this without destroying my ability to boot to the D: drive or my information on the D: drive.  Remember that they are all the same physical drive.

I tried to find an answer to this online but all I could find were instructions on how to do it if vista was NOT installed in your C:drive.  Unfortunately mine is.

What can I do?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

PopinjaySince Vista uses a different bootloader than XP i'm afraid this may not even be possible...

Remove Vista from the C: drive and install a later version of XP onto the C: drive to replace it
Please let me tell you this is not a good idea.
Why do you want to do this?
I have had XP installed all over the place  on hard drives. It works fine on any partition. I don't know of any strong reason to move it.

Now, having said that, here is a article you may want to read:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc721886(WS.10).aspx

Here is what this means in nutshell. You can not use the popular partition manager programs to copy and/or move around partitions while the boot system was created my Vista or Windows 7. You will crash the boot loader.

I am new to Windows 7 and found the only way I can wok  partitions around is to wipe out the Windows 7 installation and then repair the boot loader with the Windows XP install CD.  This has a measure of risk. I had a backup plan.
I then had to re-install Windows 7 and it  now works, but the boot loader has a double reference to Windows 7. I can not edit it as a text file, as PER the link above states.

Now my XP is C: and windows 7 is E: and I am not going to TRY and change anything. It took me a week to get it to this point. And required the use of two computers and four hard drives. I don't want to do that again and I would NEVER recommend it to anyone.
So, IMO, just be happy you have a dual boot system that works. Quote from: patio on October 03, 2009, 12:26:35 AM
Since Vista uses a different bootloader than XP i'm afraid this may not even be possible...

Is it not possible to format the C: partition then install the newer version of XP in that partition?  Setup would create a new bootloader for the version of XP on C: then the Boot.ini file could be edited to give the dual boot options for C: and D: if Setup doesn't automatically do that.No because the 2nd install...no matter what flavor of Windows it is needs to write certain system files to the root of C: for it to run properly....

This is why when you setup a dual-boot machine the older OS is always installed first to the C: partition with the 2nd install after the first is in place and working.

Trust me...i've been down this road many times. Quote from: Dusty on October 03, 2009, 03:19:38 AM

I'm with Dusty on this one.  It should be fine if you format C: (full format) from a Windows XP operating system so its Partition Boot Record (which looks for NTLDR boot manager) is written to the partition.  Should be able to do this either from Windows XP install CD or EXISTING Windows XP on D:.

Verify current C: partition is the "active" primary partition.  Can use Disk Management to do this.  It should have "System" attribute in the graphic display.

You must be careful to ensure new installation goes to C: partition.  I think there's a small "Advanced Options" link (lower right of some paragraph) in one of the early setup screens that permits you to select device and directory to install to.

Trust No One.  Backup your data before attempting this.

Trust me...
Always, unswervingly, but....  I just had to set up a trial and here's what I did.  All install disks are genuine originals or slipstreamed versions produced from genuine versions.

1.   Partitioned a hdd and formatted partition D: and installed using Win XP Home SP.1 - reboot.

2.  From Cmd.exe formatted partition C:.  Installed Windows XP Home SP.3 on partition C:.  Noted that Setup referred to D: as being C:.  Reboot.

3.  NTLDR displayed the multi-boot partition info from Boot.ini with the default being XP Home SP.3 - as expected, the last system installed.

At this point the system is setup similar to the OP's apart from the OP having Vista on partition C:

4.  Booted to XP Home SP.1 located on D: and formatted partition C:

5.  Rebooted and installed Win XP Pro SP.3 on partition C:

6.  On reboot NTLDR displayed the multi-boot partition info from Boot.ini with XP Pro as default as expected.  Partition(1) is shown as containing XP SP.1 with XP Pro on partition(2), the reverse of what was expected but not a problem.

My conclusion: Setup will automatically create a multi-boot environment.  Apart from the slight confusion with drive letter and partition number allocations when booting into the system on C: the method is viable.  After deleting Boot.ini the advisory message showed that the system would be booted to C:\Windows but booted to Win XP SP.1 which theoretically is installed in partition D:

But here's the flaw between your method and what he needs to do...

When you did the first install of Home to the D: drive the neccessary files for proper operation and dual-boot status were written to the root of the C: drive as they normally would be.
Then you installed to C: and again certain files get written to the root of C:.....

Presto...it works.

However in his scenario he is looking to wipe C: and do a clean install....those files would then be wiped and all the root would contain is the files to boot C:

No amount of editing the boot ini will correct this.

To test this leave D: intact...wipe your C: install and re-install to C:.
Then try and dual -boot. Quote from: patio on October 04, 2009, 06:24:16 AM

what did you intend by wipe?

Is that not what the OP wants to do, format (wipe) C: and install a later version of XP on C: leaving D: intact and bootable which seems to me to be what has been achieved.

What am I missing?  Will the Vista bootloader not be overwritten if Vista is removed and a clean install of XP on C: drive is completed?

No disrespect Dusty. The OP has limited experience in this. Just doing a new install on the C: partition is NOT going to leave the D: partition intact and bookable. TRUST US.

He has to make an image of the D: partition to another local Drive or or a network drive. The primary boot drive always get's written to with any OS install. Wether this is a partition, a separate drive, etc, it won't matter.

If however one was to install windows onto C:, and then change the BIOS boot order to place D:\ (perhaps a slave hard drive) at a higher priority, then that drive will be regarded as the main system drive.

At the same time, the issue is limited to the change between the boot methods between Vista and XP: obviously no amount of hacking about with boot.ini can get NTLDR to load a Vista partition; however, in the OP's case, I believe it would work.

After clearing out C:\ and installing XP, the C:\ drive now has had the Vista boot loader replaced with the standard NTLDR and boot.ini combination. in addition, the XP installer will have discovered the XP install on D:\, and added a appropriate entry into boot.ini for it. Quote

From his post it is not certain which is the "C" drive and which is the D" drive. We are not sure how XP got to be  the D drive. It may already be the first primary drive in the system and got badlyis cast as D. He did not make it clear how it got that way. If he did it, then why does he want to change it?

An issue maybe like this was mentioned in the MS KB.

If he formats the wrong drive, he will lose his data. Quote from: Geek

C'mon Geek, justify that statement.  Why will the D: partition not be intact, are you suggesting that an install on C: will somehow cripple D:?  As for leaving D: bootable, D: already has XP installed so all that's required is to have the ability to point to it.  This is done by the installer when a second version of XP is installed on C: and an updated Boot.ini file is written. As the MBR is outside C: the Partition Table remains unchanged when any partition is formatted.   Sure I'll trust you but please give some sort of proof for your statements.

Thank you BC_P.  That's exactly the situation I found and can confirm that during the install on C: the Boot.ini file was amended to muilti-boot C: and D:    As another test I installed Ubuntu on C: and XP on D: then formatted C: and installed another version of XP, the same thing, multi-boot success.

When he gives you the password log on and go to control panel. Then click on User accounts. Click "Create a new acount". Fallow the instructions given and make a new Amdin acount.

At which point the other person, knowing full well how to use a computer, will subsequently delete the account.

Patio's solution is the only good one that is also fair to the owner of the PC. You know, the one that owns it and thus should be in charge of who USES it, when they use it, and what privileges they have when they use it. Apparently in the "new world order" that 13-year olds are professing I GUESS that any computer is everybody's computer. Of course given that most 13-year olds don't own their own computer it really is in their best interest to claim something like that, since they have nothing to lose and everything to gain. I propose however that everybody INSTEAD simply have a piece of pie and shut up.

hmm... I managed to turn something about computer privileges into pie. I have a gift.  I certainly hope the pie is not like the cake...the cake was a lie...It was not really the Cake itself that was a lie but rather the promise that there WOULD be cake. It was this promissory contract made by glaDOS to motivate the player to progress further that was in fact, the lie. The concept of "cake" itself, is not a fabrication, but the guarantee that an instance of said cake would be found at the end of the journey was.

However one must then decide exactly what constitutes a lie. Perhaps glaDOS truly believed that there would, in fact, be cake. Although the attempts on the life of the player and the deep psychological impact glaDOS had on the player by forcing them to destroy their one true friend, the companion cube, points to scheming sort of artificial intelligence that is awfully cliche in movies and games.Have you guys played Portal:Prelude?Yes.

There is no cake at the end.

Solve : Not able to boot?

Answer»

I lost power durring a system restore.
No boot disc will WORK.
I am getting:
err 5: Error finding VFLOPPY.SYS
err 8: Fake Floppy driver not found
Press any key to boot active partition.

And the computer wont let me enter into setup mode.

How can I save my computer?
Do you have a Windows CD ? ?
Do you know how to enter bios? If so, go in and move the cd drive to the top of the boot order. While there, check to MAKE sure all specified drives actually exist and if not, remove them from the hardware listing (ie, a floppy drive if you don't actually have one). Save your changes and boot to your XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option and do a repair install.I do but it tells me to press enter to boot it and then I the error messages I posted
it wont let me enter bios How do you get into the bios on your system?at the start up screen I press del to enter bios, it just PASSES it up and I get the messiages no matter what I do
Okay. Let's try this. Pull the power cord from the AC supply, then open the system and remove the small silver battery for half a minute. Then replace the battery, close the system and plug it in. Reboot. Can you now get into the bios?

And I'm about to log off, but I'm sure Patio has better ideas than I do.that did not work either
What is the brand and model of your computer?
Tiger Systemax
So pressing Delete willl not get you into the BIOS ? ?
You need to tap it REPEATEDLY for this to work on some machines...
What are you going to do in the BIOS ? ?

There isn't anything in there that will fix a Windows system error. His first post says "no boot disc will work". It may be that he needs to CHANGE the boot order.I am finall in the bios screen after removing the silver battery several times,
what can I do now?
Please help me save my computer

Read my first post above and follow the instructions. Do not make any changes in the bios unless you are certain of what you are doing.

Solve : Cost $59 for Microsoft Support?

Answer»

I was TRYING to get help from Microsoft with setting-up e-mail using "Outlook Express 6" but in order to get assistance, I am supposed to pay $59 for support VIA e-mail. This is outrageous. Apple gives free support. I have already loaded "Outlook Express 6" into my PC using Windows XP, but when I attempt to file/send a page via that account, a message appears that my SMTP could not be found. This has happened to me before with other PCs. Is there another e-mail I could use rather than "Outlook Express"?There are any number of good, free email clients. Thunderbird is one of the best, but if you do a Google search I'm sure you'll have many from which to choose.

And by the way, support forums such as this one do the same thing as Microsoft Support and we don't CHARGE nearly as much  Let be Google that for you
Click  below:
http://tinyurl.com/yhabmqpwho is your ISP? Most of them have a help page to walk you though the setup. You need to know the name of the mail server that they use.

Here is an example from COX

http://support.cox.com/sdccommon/asp/contentredirect.asp?sprt_cid=16d799e1-107f-40e1-b04c-7f95e8bcaf39

The issue here is not with Outlook Express (OE); it's with incorrect email account settings.  As Spoiler said, check with your ISP on the settings you should be using.  Any of the larger ISPs will have specific INSTRUCTIONS on their website on setting up an email account in OE.

If you can't FIND the info on their website, call them. You surely are entitled to some phone support from your ISP,  even though they may be refer you to a page on their website.

Solve : My computer is only working in safe mode and wont let me run a virus scan!?

Answer»

I need help really bad, I need my computer for school! It just turned off on its own one day and when i restarted it, it had an antivirus dialog box popping up and my background PIC and thats it and it wouldnt let me in. Now it shows the background pic, no icons or my taskbar. I can get in safe mode with networking but i cant run a virus scan, and i just downloaded charter security suite that i got from the company IM using.

P.S. They told me to delete my virus protection when i signed up for the internet (not telling me correctly that i couldnt download their package security suite til i got my first bill in the mail w/my security code) and my luck...this happened two days before i got my bill.   1) Never run your system without a GOOD antivirus UTILITY installed and resident.
2) Download a boot time antivirus utility and create a cd with it (Avira, Avast, Bit Defender, etc). Boot to that cd and run an av scan at boot.  Well, SOUNDS like a fishy one! I suggest copying all of your system files, and documents, and pictures etc, to a memory stick/Whatever some data can hold, then after that, re-install the operating system. If you need help, please either CONTACT your system administrator, or talking to your nearest computer shop.
Don't copy anything yet (until we are sure what is or is not infected) and certainly don't reinstall the OS - not yet, anyway. Go ahead and run the boot time scans as I suggested in my first post.
