Solve : Windows Root>\system32\hal.dll. missing? |
|
Answer» Hello everybody: Moving partitions ? ? Originally I had mint before the xp partition. The software I was using was partition commander and ACRONIS partition suite... I don't remember specifically which one I used. it was late and I was tired... I set the dimensions at 15gigs for both mint and XP The mint partition was not 15gb, so I wanted to resize it but because xp was in the way I deleted the partition for mint, then moved xp over to the beginning of the HDD, then I created new mint 15gb. but in the move I lost the hal.dll. file. Yea I know my hard drive is old and I will be upgrading it here soon but I just don't have the money yet. all TESTS and diagnostics I have run on the drive have come back with out any errors, I was using Western digital diagnostic tools for this. I hope this is enough to help... Cbarnard Quote it was late and I was tired...Never a time to start messing with partitions...but we already know that now. Missing hal.dll infoThank you patio: Your link was good, I was able to FIX the hal.dll file. But now I have to figure out how to rename the file. When I select win xp from my boot menu. it then asks which one I want to boot. When I named it I put a one, and there was still the REGULAR Microsoft Win XP selection, which still doesn't work, I haven't' thought about it much right now, but I want to rename the file to Microsoft win Xp and delete the link to the non working section... Thank you |

Solve : Something changed the behavior of the desktop? |
|
Answer» Any and all open programs disappear behind the Start button ( tool bar ) when i minimize them and can't find an icon on the tool bar like there was a week or so ago. So now even Skype which pops up over all open windows when a call comes in remains hidden; i can access that program via the task bar but it's a pain trying to answer the phone when doing something else. tool barTaskbar? Quote i can access that program via the task barTask Manager? Quote Then a blue screen appeared saying that it need to check thingsWhat did the blue screen say? What "things" you had to check?before i answer the questions you asked it seems that this answer that i had been WORKING on while researching similar situations on a different browser page ( which as mentioned in my original post; will disappear to place outside the boundries of my screen if i minimumize it, so inorder to go back and forth i now need to make them half size and toggle back and forth between them ) Anyway, i must have been typing and researching too long and was asked to sign back in. After doing that i was presented with a blank page mentioning something about "where i left off" i typed in a few dasks and dots as a subject and a few words in the body and now it is up as a post of it's own. Go figure... The "blue screne" that comes up is not the kiss of death blue screne although it is the same mono-chromatic color of blue with a full page of "checks" that the computer is going to do. My best guess based on it actually using the term somewhere in the process, is that it is scan disk if i recall correctly that was one of the tools that i used frequently in win 98. So as it goes through this process in numbered sections 1,2,3, and sometimes more, not sure how many but i'm think 4. It performs that task and the screne remains blue but you can see the progress in one way or another, either numbers rolling by or a progress bar. This has only happend to be 2 or 3 times since XP came out. Quote from: Broni on January 23, 2009, 04:10:52 PM Quotetool barTaskbar? The terms that i used MAY be mac terms although mac used the term "menu bar" for just about every bar top and bottom including sub bars that are often tool bars as well. On a Win sys the bottom "menu bar" is a composite of many things. On the bottom left is the start button and on the right with the clock and calendar as an anchor is what i've been calling "the task bar" inbetween those two ends is what i also call " a tool bar " and it can be customized with a quick LAUNCH area that can be personalized, and in the middle of it all is a blue space that not so long ago would show how many browser windows that i had open and a seperate counter of wordpad and notepad were open so i could easily toggle between them. This first change appeared as only one counter that would group programs and you'd have to rotate the counter to come to notepad or back to IE. If i right click on that "menu bar" i have a bunch of potions but not even in properties can i find something that looks or sounds like what i want to do. Hope that explained the terms that i used in my first post. There are too many words to remember them all and it wasn't like i had a choice to pass on this action. i also recall the word "volumns" somewhere in the blue screne experience. Any suggestions as to where i can find out how to change it back will be much appreciatedI'm so sorry but i'm lost in what your talking about??? Can you maybe like upload an image of your problem i'm lost sorry.http://www.coolnerds.com/XP/Taskbar/xpTaskbar01.gifI know what a task bar is.... I mean a screen shot of your problem because i'm lost in that.Me too Quote from: Kryptonite on January 24, 2009, 04:39:00 AM
That was a BSOD. we need the text from that, if it appears again. As far as the task bar- the entire thing is referred to as a task bar (merely for convenience purposes- we can't go around talking about the "start menu, quick launch, task, and clock"-bar-, contains the start button, Quick Launch area, the actual task bar , and the system notification area. Anything else besides those are extra toolbars, but aren't referred to as a toolbar, but rather by their name, such as the "address bar". one possibility to try to restore your taskbar to it's former self would be to first unlock the taskbar, (by right-clicking an empty area of the taskbar and ensuring "Lock the taskbar" is unchecked), Then rightclick again, this time going to the "toolbars" option. Unselect all the options here except "Quick Launch". Another method of switching applications would be to use the alt+tab key combination- this can make it easier to use the computer while we try to remedy your situation. Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 24, 2009, 11:22:20 AM Quote from: Kryptonite on January 24, 2009, 04:39:00 AM The picture that i posted is NOT what happens anymore. Those icon from the center of the "the task bar". Once someone other than myself can wrap their mind around what the problem is i would like to see how to inquire about the same problem with the best choice of words. Although the whole bar may be called "the task bar" the only place that i have ever experienced those icon "buttons" is in the middle of it. And although it may be incorrect i called one of the original members of the PC computer club that i joined when i went over to the dark side. He affirmed that we were taught in the SIGS that the part with the clock to the right was referred to in class as the "task bar" and that those icons were running from start up and eating RESOURSES. But that was then and this is now and i can call it macaroni if it will help explain the problem. i have had it tocked and unlocked although i think you may be on to something because i mostly keep it unlocked. Before i lose everything i typed here i will post this and try the alt+tab to see if it brings up those other windows. No Alt+Tab doesn't bring back those minimized windows....i have no idea where they are or how to get them back. As i have been trying to point out; when i hit the minimize window i can see it disappear down towards the start menu If i capute screne, which one do i do? basic desktop or one with browser up and running or two or three running but not minimized but half sized? Those should appear in the task bar like the picture i posted should it not? What is on the blue screne as i also mentioned is a small novel of information....i would have to take a picture of it with my camera and upload it because i'd have to write it on paper then type it out again....hundered words or more is my guess. The only way to create it again is to try to overload the resources and force close it. Let me know if you've got other idea's....i can tell you the options when i right click the taskbar. Quote As far as the task bar- the entire thing is referred to as a task bar (merely for convenience purposes- we can't go around talking about the "start menu, quick launch, task, and clock"-bar-, contains the start button, Quick Launch area, the actual task bar , and the system notification area. Until that feature is gone you don't know how much you depend on it. Working without it is like pushing papers aside on a real desk to get to the ones underneath; except on a real desk papers don't completely disappear unless the dog eats it.Ctrl+Alt+Delete New Task... Solve : XP hard drive mounted into Vista machine? |
|
Answer» I recently had a problem with our HP XP machine, and could not get it to come up. In my "infinite wisdom" I purchased a New Vista machine. I then removed the XP hard drive and installed it into the Vista machine. It appeared to read all files, but we didn't get all DATA or photo files that we knew were there. Am I missing something or is there a loss of data? All searches for jpg files only return older files, nothing recent. Can anybody help with this? THANKS...It will not boot on another machine because it is looking for the old hardware... In my "infinite wisdom" I purchased a New Vista machine. I then removed the XP hard drive and installed it into the Vista machine.Quote from: patio on February 06, 2009, 11:08:15 AM QuoteIn my "infinite wisdom" I purchased a New Vista machine. I then removed the XP hard drive and installed it into the Vista machine. Yes, but is the user running Windows XP or Vista, I don't see how that question has been answered.a computer may be a dell compaq hp gateway vaio ..... But if the poster says he purchased a Vista machine, then he is saying there is Win Vista on the machine. Quote from: shashgo on February 06, 2009, 12:17:07 PM a computer may be a dell compaq hp gateway vaio ..... But if the poster says he purchased a Vista machine, then he is saying there is Win Vista on the machine. I understand the situation, I just don't like to assume. Sorry I'm LATE in getting BACK to all of you. Here are the paticulars: I had an HP Pavilion a814x with XP Home installed. When I tried to upgrade the memory I suddenly could no longer power the HP back up. The power indicator blinked green vice a steady green. I reconfigered back to original mem config, but still had same problem. I pulled the power supply out and it would show a steady green lite with power supply. I thought that it could be on/off switch or possibly I damaged the motherboard installing the SIMMs. I had the Vista machine recently purchased, so I removed the hard drive from the HP machine and mounted it in the Vista machine. I can access the HP drive and see most of what was out there, but have been unable to access most recent photos and some files that were bookmarked and stored. That is where I'm at, being able to access some data and files, but not all. I think that this a slaved drive already. The Vista OS is the boot drive. I just can't get through my brain what I'm missing about the inter relation between the two OSs, why some data is readily available but other data is not. Quote I think that this a slaved drive already. This needs to be confirmed...are you saying the machine boots to Vista ? ? If so it's hooked up properly... When you say some files can't be accessed is there an error message involved ? ?Or folders that won't let you in ? ? How many user PROFILES were on the XP machine ? If you go to Documents and Settings folder on the XP drive have you checked ALL users ? ? If you are being denied access then Clik Here...]Clik Here... |

Solve : Problems adding freeware font to XP OS? |
|
Answer» I downloaded a freeware group of fonts and did the following: If I already had the font, why would I download it again and not just use it? Why are you asking us? That is what the error message means. What is the font, where did you get it, etc. ALL fonts can be opened with "open" since that opens the font directly without adding it to the fonts list and displays the preview.Proper Method of installing Fonts.I found the solution when I was trawling around Google: the user on my computer did not have administrator rights. As soon as I added administrator rights, voila!, the font was added to the fonts folder and I used it immediately in Photoshop. Solve : gateway desktop 500 makes hard drive noises and is slow? |
|
Answer» I just reinstalled my OS on the computer, because the computer was quite slow. It has 384 MB RAM. But even after the INSTALL programs take forever to load on it or get uninstalled, and there is a near constant noise from the HD I think or the CPU or something (you know the noises the computer makes when it is doing something like browsing to a page or opening an explorer window) It has 384 MB RAM.That's your first problem. As for the noise, two thoughts: 1) If it's a clicking or grinding noise from the hd (unlike anything you're used to), the hd is dying 2) If it's just the sound of background processing, open task manager to the processes tab, sort on the cpu column and see which process is active.allan: I DONT see any unusual processes running in task manager by the way, what should the RAM be for win XP Quote from: shashgo on October 01, 2009, 03:07:28 PM allan:I didn't tell you to look for unusual processes, I said to sort on the cpu column and see what is using the processor. And what do you mean "what should the ram be"?Minimum 512 Mg...so should I run the tool at crucial.com to see what kind of memoory I need and what is the maximum that is supported by this mootherboard? sureallan, I did that but according to the info, I have the max amount of RAM already. Anyway I browsed over to a microsoft webpage at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314865 and this is what it says The minimum hardware requirements for Windows XP Home Edition are: * Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended) * At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended) * At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk * CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive * Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible POINTING device * Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600)or higher resolution * Sound card * Speakers or headphones So then it isnt the ram that is the problem, cause I need only 128 MB recommended and I have 384 MB. I checked in my computer properties, the processor is 498 MHz, HD is 40 GB.You really should get more RAM in that machine. What is the make and model of your motherboard? I would also suggest you get the manufacture tools for your hard drive and test your drive..... BACKUP your data.... The required specs. are far below what something needs to run well. 512mb of RAM is a must for XP. Your MBoard maxxes out at 384Mg of RAM ? ? Why not post some of these machines specs as you may be banging your head against the wall trying to get it to perform. |

Could his flies be corrupt? or drive sectors? Is there any way I can tell ? in the event logger I see a lot of Msi Installer warnings but I can’t access any properties of anything . his problems started when he turned on auto updates and all KINDS or stuff got down loaded… SP2 ,Dr Watson , hot fixes….. Solve : Monitor resolution problem after reinstall of XP? |
|
Answer» Haven't been here on the forums for a week or two, glad to be back thanks guys, I reinstalled and it worked! You guys are awesome!! Did you get the drivers from the installation CD or from an extra CD that came with the computer or motherboard? I'm asking because I don't know if chipset drivers come on any installation CDs. I had to reinstall the chipset driver on a Dell computer once, but the driver came on an extra CD that came with the computer.I don't get your question... Usually there is a Recovery CD containing sometimes both the OS and all REQUIRED drivers... In the other scenario there is a seperate cd labeled Drivers. Quote from: patio on October 06, 2009, 05:34:48 PM Usually there is a Recovery CD containing sometimes both the OS and all required drivers... WELL that pretty much answers my question I just wasn't sure if other required drivers are sometimes included with installation/recovery CDs. I THOUGHT other required drivers were always on a separate CD. |

Answer» I have an HP desktop with windows XP home edition.I also have fast access, but it is ery slow.I've run virus scans, defragmenter and cleaned out EVERYTHING I don't need, but it is still crawling like a snail.Should I reformat it,as I have nothing on it that is important.Which one is slow, computer or internet? The pc is very slow,I checked with ISP provider and they said problem was with my computer.I ran the CCleaner, yahoo antispy, malwarebytes anti malware and unistalled programs I didn't need with the revounistaller and add or remove programs. The pc is around 5 tp 6 yrs. old, would it make it faster if I reformatted it?I even defragmented and cleaned out cookies and internet files.I have nothing important on this pc and was wondering if reformatting it would help.It is an Hp pavillion desktop and works fine, but is slow as a turtle ,or snail.reformatting would help. After 5 years its time. Quote The pc is very slow,I checked with ISP provider and they said problem was with my computerOK, one more time, which one is slow, or both? ISP will ALWAYS say so. Check your speed here: http://www.speedtest.net/ Post results. What's your ISP advertised speed? Please, post some computer info: - processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key) - hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties") - security programs in use (antivirus, firewall)Ok Broni, will get that info early morning for you.ThanksNo problem. You're still not saying, if computer is slow, or the internet is slow, or both...maybe hes not sure My computer is the one that is slow;therfore causing the internet to be slow also.My computer is a HP pavillion 6738,697 MHZ with 256 MB of Ram.I was going to reformatt it,but when I clicked on My Computer then drive C and right clicked on that, all it said was to insert CD for reformatt, and I don't have a startup Cd from HP,so I guess I will have to order one.All I have is a Windows XP home Edition from Dell. Quote with 256 MB of Ram. Herein lies the issue...best and most economical solution is more RAM. Also check to see what amount of Free space you have on that drive.I posted something on my blog at http://mswt.wordpress.com/2009/08/02/hidden-windows-xp-options-to-boost-speed/ and you can make Windows XP faster.I've already done all that you have posted to try and make my PC faster and still slow.I've loated a few recovery disk on ebay, but not sure which one to get.If I get the Windows XP 2000 recovery disk, will that be all I need and will it have all drivers on it.Will I also need that for the # 6738 hp pavillion desktop.I've found a few simular to this #,but it said it was for # 6736 Hp Pavillion. There are many things you could do besides the things you tried i'll give a top ten list 1 disk defragment go to start then accessories then diskdefragment you can see if you need one before you do it by CLICKING the analyze 2 same place in start accesories then disk cleanup I usually check everything 3 go to all of your internet browsers and delete everything mosty just the cookies, will speed it up like internet explorer it's tools then delete browsing history and in there you can delet cookies are whatever you want, I will usually check everything 4 i'm sure you heard this all ready so i'll give you some more try downloading ccleaner this will make it easier to delete your internet cookies and history and it also deletes lots of other things that will speed up your computer make sure you only check the things you want to delete. 5 Ok xp has alot of visual effects that slows it down alot more than you might think this speeded up my computer quit a bit even after i did the stuff above ok to do this go to start all programs left click on my computer then properties then advanced then under performence click on settings then click on adjust for best performece don't worry nothing bad will happen and uncheck everything but your your computer will lose it's settings so your computer will look like windows 95 are 98 but you can change it afterwards but i don't i'll gladly sacrifice fancy looks for some more speed anyday but just going back to the xp look by left clicking on the desktop then properties shouldn't slow it down to much 6 ok now make sure everything on your computer you don't want is deleted this HELPS the computer FIND stuff faster because it has less stuff to look threw 7 ok now some antiviruses with live protection can slow down a computer alot more than you think try avira and turn off live protection also download malwarebytes and superantispyware these are good 8 there are some other things you could try besides antispyware and malware programs like registry cleaners try tweaknow regcleaner and eusing free registry cleaner from CNET you could also download smart defrag from there but with the smart defrag i didn't notice a difference in performence 9 ok go to run type in msconfig and under services and startup uncheck everything you don't want becarefull there are some things in there you want to have for your computer to run properly like in startup i can uncheck with my computer superantispyware avgnt readersl teatimer realschred qttask now in services you could also uncheck alot of things like with mine i can uncheck google updater service windows cardspace java quick starter windows media player n (sucurity center optional but i din't want it) also avira antivir shceduler avira antivir guard google software updater and there are many more i have unchecked make sure you unchech all the things you don't want and not uncheck everything you need some of these things for windows to run properly if you don't know what each thing is google it and it will tell you what it is. 10 now make sure you don't have a bug are virus run multiple scanners like malwarebytes superantispyware avira hijack this run a microsoft scan. a virus can slow down your computer alot and is usually the only reason a computer might be just as slow as it was even after you did all of these. 11 ok 11 in mycomputer left click on c then properties and uncheck indexing service to index this disk for fast file searching this doesn't help for a faster computer and don't compress the disk to save space then click apply then ok 12 in my computer click on tools then folder options then view then uncheck automaticly search for network folders and printers And also this helped me alot more than all the stuff above combined with the internet speed get a different browser besides ie8 like firefox are google chrome i would get opera before google chrome and firefox it's fast has more features than google chrome and i think it's faster than firefox and alot faster than ie8 you should really try the visual effects with an older computer diffenitly if it doesn't have a good graphics card sorry for my bad spelling spellcheck isn't working and I just put this together quickThankyou very much James,I've already done disk defrag, diak cleanup, cookies, browsing history and also have the CCleaner and Malware bytes and ran both of them, but haven't done the my computer and properties,or misconfig things and will chage IE to Opera and see if any better. Thanks,Free some space.... upgrade the your RAM device, hard disk... |

Solve : Windows nag message? |
|
Answer» Whenever I open Outlook I receive a pop-up from Windows that my XP Pro is not genuine. When I follow their Learn More button it gets me to a site from where I can buy the "genuine" software. The thing is that I bought the genuine software only in March from Microsoft direct and have all the documents to prove it. When I contacted MS they sent me to another site that no longer refers to my software, or to my complaint, but wants me to accept terms of an agreement that does not serve any purpose whatsoever. However, I fear that by doing nothing they will not only continue nagging me, but MAY eventually do something that interfers with the software. It also sounds to me as though you are making excuses for some reason. If indeed the software is legitimate and you don't want the nag, then you have to acknowledge the agreement. Period. If, on the other hand, there is some reason you are not revealing - well, it's up to you. They unfortunately make the rules... And however i may agree with your assessment on how things are you have 2 clear choices: A) Agree to the Terms of Liscense and get rid of the nag screen... or B) Search the web for a free open source alternative to the software you are using. If it's just an e-mail app you are after i highly suggest ThunderBird as an alternative...from the fine people who gave us FireFox. That being said i'm done here.I agree with Patio. If you don't like the rules, play a different game.when you start outlook something complains that your version of XP Pro is not legitimate? What is the exact wording? It's possible that this is actually not a popup from MS/Office at all, but some form of Macro/VBScript outlook virus. (do you get the same popup with any other office application?) The site MS redirected you too was probably one of their Anti-piracy sites. Standard procedure, I think. But the thing is- I can see outlook- or another office application (does this occur with other office programs?) complaining about an illegitimate Office installation- but I really don't see them complaining about the OS itself. This makes me wonder if, in fact, this message is being generated by some sort of infection. (this tactic,. (claiming the OS or application is illegitimate) is commonly used to trick people into buying a program or something similar (or maybe just to cause trouble for MS support STAFF). So, let's get some details then: What version of Office/Outlook? (2000,XP,2003,2007...) What XP and Office service packs? Can you get the exact wording of this message? The exact wording is: "This copy of Microsoft Office is not genuine. In 10 days Office APPLICATIONS will be marked as not genuine. Genuine Office helps guard against vulnerabilities that may exist in non-genuine copies. Click Learn More for online details and help IDENTIFYING the best way to get genuine Microsoft Office." I receive it only in Outlook. When I clicked Learn More it got me to a sales site for Microsoft Office. Since I purchased my software (XP) from MS not so long ago, I eventually found my way to a support address and gave them the details of this purchase. Thereafter I received another email from MS leading me to a site that REQUESTED to accept (or not) terms of an agreement. Since patio made me aware of EULA this all seems to be perfectly legitimate, and you are probably right that this is one of MS' anti piracy activities. I am now going with a very fine comb through the agreement and perhaps will sign it. It still think it's bad taste that MS resorts to scare tactics, rather than just sending an email politely asking me to sign up. I didn't know of EULA and I check it out now. I still think about ThunderBird and will decide soon. Thanks again. |

Solve : Problems deleting file? |
|
Answer» I have a file name on my desk top that I cannot delete. When I try to do so I get the error message "Cannot delete file - cannot read from the source file or disk". Looking at the file properties it shows 0 bytes. It seems that I have managed to delete the contents of the file without deleting the title. I have tried SEARCHING for it with no success. Help gratefully received.
If you see the icon / file name there, right-click on it and use unlocker to delete it.Unlocker deletes files? Okay then, that would be the easier option. Whoopee - Unlocker killed it! I don't know how much time I wasted on that. Thank you very much - great result. Thank you to all who contributed. You're welcome.Last thing - is there a way for me to flag this topic as sorted? You can change the thread subject and add the word "Solved" in front of it, but I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Solve : Repair installation?? |

Answer» HI everyone I'd LIKE to try to do my first repair installation of windows XP pro on my brothers Dell Optiplex GX270 ,Pentium 4 processor running XP Pro Sp3.... Im following the steps on About.com (poor relatives, if they only knew ) Bros pc is USED and he has no recovery disk. I have a new Xp pro disk SP2 ..can I use it to do repair install on his sp3 machine? can I use a new disk at all ? thanksrepair install http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm If I were you I do a clean install. Does the computer have a product key sticker on it? Don't worry if it doesn't have a product key, if it still boots we can find out what it is. Yes, there's a sticker on it and it will boot ..doing a clean install was my first thought ..However i thought i would try to save his installed programs SINCE some nice ones came installed when he bought it and he has no disks for those either Well then... http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmThanks for the link think i'll try it 2moro .. let you know how i make outNo. You can not use an SP2 disk to repair an SP3 installation. You can, however, create an sp3 slipstream cd (see the nlite site).Pay close attention to the warnings at the end of the INSTRUCTIONS... Print out a copy for reference before you start. |

Solve : Installing XP under unusual circumstances? |
|
Answer» I didn't know whether to post this as a vita question or an xp question since it involves both. Here is what I want to to:Please let me tell you this is not a good idea. Why do you want to do this? I have had XP installed all over the place on hard drives. It works fine on any partition. I don't know of any strong reason to move it. Now, having said that, here is a article you may want to read: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc721886(WS.10).aspx Here is what this means in nutshell. You can not use the popular partition manager programs to copy and/or move around partitions while the boot system was created my Vista or Windows 7. You will crash the boot loader. I am new to Windows 7 and found the only way I can wok partitions around is to wipe out the Windows 7 installation and then repair the boot loader with the Windows XP install CD. This has a measure of risk. I had a backup plan. I then had to re-install Windows 7 and it now works, but the boot loader has a double reference to Windows 7. I can not edit it as a text file, as PER the link above states. Now my XP is C: and windows 7 is E: and I am not going to TRY and change anything. It took me a week to get it to this point. And required the use of two computers and four hard drives. I don't want to do that again and I would NEVER recommend it to anyone. So, IMO, just be happy you have a dual boot system that works. Quote from: patio on October 03, 2009, 12:26:35 AM Since Vista uses a different bootloader than XP i'm afraid this may not even be possible... Is it not possible to format the C: partition then install the newer version of XP in that partition? Setup would create a new bootloader for the version of XP on C: then the Boot.ini file could be edited to give the dual boot options for C: and D: if Setup doesn't automatically do that.No because the 2nd install...no matter what flavor of Windows it is needs to write certain system files to the root of C: for it to run properly.... This is why when you setup a dual-boot machine the older OS is always installed first to the C: partition with the 2nd install after the first is in place and working. Trust me...i've been down this road many times. Quote from: Dusty on October 03, 2009, 03:19:38 AM Is it not possible to format the C: partition then install the newer version of XP in that partition? Setup would create a new bootloader for the version of XP on C: then the Boot.ini file could be edited to give the dual boot options for C: and D: if Setup doesn't automatically do that. I'm with Dusty on this one. It should be fine if you format C: (full format) from a Windows XP operating system so its Partition Boot Record (which looks for NTLDR boot manager) is written to the partition. Should be able to do this either from Windows XP install CD or EXISTING Windows XP on D:. Verify current C: partition is the "active" primary partition. Can use Disk Management to do this. It should have "System" attribute in the graphic display. You must be careful to ensure new installation goes to C: partition. I think there's a small "Advanced Options" link (lower right of some paragraph) in one of the early setup screens that permits you to select device and directory to install to. Trust No One. Backup your data before attempting this. Reference: A Guide to the Multiboot Process. Quote from: Patio Trust me...Always, unswervingly, but.... I just had to set up a trial and here's what I did. All install disks are genuine originals or slipstreamed versions produced from genuine versions. 1. Partitioned a hdd and formatted partition D: and installed using Win XP Home SP.1 - reboot. 2. From Cmd.exe formatted partition C:. Installed Windows XP Home SP.3 on partition C:. Noted that Setup referred to D: as being C:. Reboot. 3. NTLDR displayed the multi-boot partition info from Boot.ini with the default being XP Home SP.3 - as expected, the last system installed. At this point the system is setup similar to the OP's apart from the OP having Vista on partition C: 4. Booted to XP Home SP.1 located on D: and formatted partition C: 5. Rebooted and installed Win XP Pro SP.3 on partition C: 6. On reboot NTLDR displayed the multi-boot partition info from Boot.ini with XP Pro as default as expected. Partition(1) is shown as containing XP SP.1 with XP Pro on partition(2), the reverse of what was expected but not a problem. My conclusion: Setup will automatically create a multi-boot environment. Apart from the slight confusion with drive letter and partition number allocations when booting into the system on C: the method is viable. After deleting Boot.ini the advisory message showed that the system would be booted to C:\Windows but booted to Win XP SP.1 which theoretically is installed in partition D: But here's the flaw between your method and what he needs to do... When you did the first install of Home to the D: drive the neccessary files for proper operation and dual-boot status were written to the root of the C: drive as they normally would be. Then you installed to C: and again certain files get written to the root of C:..... Presto...it works. However in his scenario he is looking to wipe C: and do a clean install....those files would then be wiped and all the root would contain is the files to boot C: No amount of editing the boot ini will correct this. To test this leave D: intact...wipe your C: install and re-install to C:. Then try and dual -boot. Quote from: patio on October 04, 2009, 06:24:16 AM But here's the flaw between your method and what he needs to do... Was this not covered in my post? Quote from: Dusty At this point the system is setup similar to the OP's apart from the OP having Vista on partition C:Quote Booted to XP Home SP.1 located on D: and formatted partition C: But this will not remove the root of C: from within Windows... This is also by design.Okay, I go along with that but when you posted Quote To test this leave D: intact...wipe your C: install and re-install to C:.what did you intend by wipe? Is that not what the OP wants to do, format (wipe) C: and install a later version of XP on C: leaving D: intact and bootable which seems to me to be what has been achieved. What am I missing? Will the Vista bootloader not be overwritten if Vista is removed and a clean install of XP on C: drive is completed? Quote Is that not what the OP wants to do, format (wipe) C: and install a later version of XP on C: leaving D: intact and bootable which seems to me to be what has been achieved. No disrespect Dusty. The OP has limited experience in this. Just doing a new install on the C: partition is NOT going to leave the D: partition intact and bookable. TRUST US. He has to make an image of the D: partition to another local Drive or or a network drive. The primary boot drive always get's written to with any OS install. Wether this is a partition, a separate drive, etc, it won't matter. If however one was to install windows onto C:, and then change the BIOS boot order to place D:\ (perhaps a slave hard drive) at a higher priority, then that drive will be regarded as the main system drive. At the same time, the issue is limited to the change between the boot methods between Vista and XP: obviously no amount of hacking about with boot.ini can get NTLDR to load a Vista partition; however, in the OP's case, I believe it would work. After clearing out C:\ and installing XP, the C:\ drive now has had the Vista boot loader replaced with the standard NTLDR and boot.ini combination. in addition, the XP installer will have discovered the XP install on D:\, and added a appropriate entry into boot.ini for it. Quote After clearing out C:\ and installing XP, the C:\ drive now has had the Vista boot loader replaced with the standard NTLDR and boot.ini combination. in addition, the XP installer will have discovered the XP install on D:\, and added a appropriate entry into boot.ini for it.From his post it is not certain which is the "C" drive and which is the D" drive. We are not sure how XP got to be the D drive. It may already be the first primary drive in the system and got badlyis cast as D. He did not make it clear how it got that way. If he did it, then why does he want to change it? An issue maybe like this was mentioned in the MS KB. If he formats the wrong drive, he will lose his data. Quote from: Geek Just doing a new install on the C: partition is NOT going to leave the D: partition intact and bookable. TRUST US C'mon Geek, justify that statement. Why will the D: partition not be intact, are you suggesting that an install on C: will somehow cripple D:? As for leaving D: bootable, D: already has XP installed so all that's required is to have the ability to point to it. This is done by the installer when a second version of XP is installed on C: and an updated Boot.ini file is written. As the MBR is outside C: the Partition Table remains unchanged when any partition is formatted. Sure I'll trust you but please give some sort of proof for your statements. Quote from: BC_P After clearing out C:\ and installing XP, the C:\ drive now has had the Vista boot loader replaced with the standard NTLDR and boot.ini combination. in addition, the XP installer will have discovered the XP install on D:\, and added a appropriate entry into boot.ini for it. Thank you BC_P. That's exactly the situation I found and can confirm that during the install on C: the Boot.ini file was amended to muilti-boot C: and D: As another test I installed Ubuntu on C: and XP on D: then formatted C: and installed another version of XP, the same thing, multi-boot success. |

Answer» I want to automatic make Account(admin, not limited) when i start my computer, idk how to explain good When he gives you the password log on and go to control panel. Then click on User accounts. Click "Create a new acount". Fallow the instructions given and make a new Amdin acount. At which point the other person, knowing full well how to use a computer, will subsequently delete the account. Patio's solution is the only good one that is also fair to the owner of the PC. You know, the one that owns it and thus should be in charge of who USES it, when they use it, and what privileges they have when they use it. Apparently in the "new world order" that 13-year olds are professing I GUESS that any computer is everybody's computer. Of course given that most 13-year olds don't own their own computer it really is in their best interest to claim something like that, since they have nothing to lose and everything to gain. I propose however that everybody INSTEAD simply have a piece of pie and shut up. hmm... I managed to turn something about computer privileges into pie. I have a gift. I certainly hope the pie is not like the cake...the cake was a lie...It was not really the Cake itself that was a lie but rather the promise that there WOULD be cake. It was this promissory contract made by glaDOS to motivate the player to progress further that was in fact, the lie. The concept of "cake" itself, is not a fabrication, but the guarantee that an instance of said cake would be found at the end of the journey was. However one must then decide exactly what constitutes a lie. Perhaps glaDOS truly believed that there would, in fact, be cake. Although the attempts on the life of the player and the deep psychological impact glaDOS had on the player by forcing them to destroy their one true friend, the companion cube, points to scheming sort of artificial intelligence that is awfully cliche in movies and games.Have you guys played Portal:Prelude?Yes. There is no cake at the end. |

Answer» I was TRYING to get help from Microsoft with setting-up e-mail using "Outlook Express 6" but in order to get assistance, I am supposed to pay $59 for support VIA e-mail. This is outrageous. Apple gives free support. I have already loaded "Outlook Express 6" into my PC using Windows XP, but when I attempt to file/send a page via that account, a message appears that my SMTP could not be found. This has happened to me before with other PCs. Is there another e-mail I could use rather than "Outlook Express"?There are any number of good, free email clients.
