Solve : Accessing links in e-mails?

Answer»

I am a very Senior Citizen and not very computer literate (but trying hard) -so easy language answers please !  My daughter gave me a Dell laptop. I am using Microsoft Windows XP and OUTLOOK Express. When I receive Email messages containing links ( for surveys, competitions etc;) and have "clicked" in various ways, I cannot access these links. Virgin MEDIA tell me it is nothing to do with them. I'd be grateful for some help.there is an option to allow links in the email program, you just have to find it and access it. You can ALSO cut and past links to a browser (internet explorer)See here: http://snipr.com/5e9jb Quote from: Broni on November 12, 2008, 09:30:45 PM

See here: http://snipr.com/5e9jb
This article is misleading.  It says:
"Outlook Express and Internet Explorer are very much apart of one another. If you change your default browser to anything but Internet Explorer, Outlook Express will go senile and links won't work."

That is a rather exaggerated statement.  A browser other than IE can be used and links on OE messages will work fine, as long as the preferred browser is set as default browser.

To check this setting, go to Control Panel (in Classic view) and open Internet Options.  Click the Programs tab.  What do you see under "Default WEB browser"?  If it says "Internet Explorer is not currently the default web browser", and you are using IE, then click the button there titled "Make default".

Also, in the same panel, check what program is set as your E-mail program.  If not OE, then click the drop-down arrow and select OE.  Click APPLY and click OK.

Solve : Email signature?

Answer»

I need to compose quite a lengthy email SIGNATURE (company email) and there seems to be a maximum amount of characters available when in the signature section of Outlook Express. I have tried everything and asked everybody I know but nobody seems to have an answer.
Could SOMEBODY help me please!!

I believe you're referring to Outlook and using Word as the email editor for Outlook.  But, Mugget said Outlook Express, and I believe the footer technique does not apply to it.

HOWEVER, he can still use an external file as the source for his OE signature and that may satisfy his requirement.  For some good info on creating SIGNATURES for OE and Windows Mail, see http://email.about.com/cs/oetipstricks/qt/et112703.htm

Solve : the registry cannot load the hive (file):?

Answer»

this morning i shut off my computer like i normally do and just went to turn it on and i got the following error message:

STOP: c0000218 {registry file failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\systemroot\system32\config\software
or its log or alternate.
it is corrupt, absent, or not writeable.

beginning dump of physical memory
physical memory dump complete.
contact your system administrator or technical support group for further
assistance.

every morning i put my computer on hibernate except when i get an error message saying "insufficient system resources exist to complete API" then i just use the shut down option. when i went to turn it back on a few minutes ago i got the error message above about the registry file failure. i tried starting up in safe mode and last known good config, but i get a blue screen with the error message.

computer:
dell inspiron E1505 (laptop)
windows xp media center edition w/ sp2
78 gb hdd
1.5 gb memory
i think i have 1.5gb of RAM (i added new memory at the beginning of the summer and i think i still have the original memory card that came with the computer)

i scan every night with avg v. 8

i don't have an XP cd, as far as i know i didn't get one with this computer
EDIT: i called dell and i'm having them mail me the recovery cds..hopefully they send the correct ones and i'll have them within the week...

what can i do to fix this?A recovery may be the only way to fix it..its BEST to have all important files backed up off the computer in case this happens and a recovery isnt the fix because then a new install will cause all files to be erased.  You can also HOOK up the hard drive in another computer as a slave and recover files if ya get stuck and you have to do a new install and dont want to lose personal files.

another option is to install windows on another drive set as master and then use your old drive as a slave to recover files.how am i supposed to back up my files if i can't get past the blue screen with the error message? read what I said in the earlyer post

you dont have to use windows on that drive to get files off of itYou need to borrow a WinXP Pro CD with SP2 included on it.

Boot to the CD and at the first prompt type R and hit Enter to bring up the Recovery Console.

Then follow the instructions in the link below to correct the error...

Clik Herei got as far as c:\windows\system32\config

when i tried to type dir system in, it gave me this message:
c:\windows\system32\config>dir system
the volume in drive c has no label
the volume serial number is a466-8abe

i'm having a hard time understanding what to do if typing in dir system doesn't work on the page linked...Continue on with the instructions in the link...they tell you what to do if you get this error.
You are now going to copy the repair system files which should do the trick.i got an error when i tried to copy the system file...i think it said the file could not be found Quote from: patio on November 10, 2008, 11:42:01 AM

patio, since he has XP Media Center edition, will he need a CD for Media Center edition for this procedure to work? From everything i've read there are very few MCE CD's out there...
The one's that are are mostly OEM's which make it harder to get to the RC.
It was originally a 2 CD set.
Every repair reference i have seen suggests using an XP Pro CD to facilitate repairs on an MCE system.
At any rate the files/folders in use are created on his drive when Windows is originally installed...i tried following the directions in the link but when i get to this point:

Type copy c:\windows\repair\system , and then press ENTER.

i get a message saying "the system cannot find the file specified."

this doesn't work: For example, type cd system32 , press ENTER, type cd config , and then press ENTER.

i get the same message as above.

i got the discs from dell yesterday and that's what i've been using. the disc says:
operating system
already installed on your computer
reinstallation dvd
microsoft windows xp media center version 2005 with update rollup 2

along with this disc i also have others that dell sent me. they are:

-application - for reinstalling dell tools system software (ANTIVIRUS software, support software, multimedia software, internet software)
-application - reinstalling dell mediadirect 3
-drivers and utilities (device drivers, diagnostics and utilities)

-reinstall cyberlink powerdvd
-roxio creator premier

i'm also no longer getting the blue screen with the error message. the error message now shows up on the screen that asks if you want to start in safe mode, last good config, or start normally. it says: windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system

do i need an actual XP program disc or will the disc that dell sent me work?

EDIT: after i had this problem, i ran the diagnostic test for "cannot boot OS" and got these errors:

If you use the Dell Recovery CD you will lose all your data and any programs installed since the machine was new...
Those CD's basically re-install everything but also wipe out everything in the process.
It will take the laptop back to Day One status.

To backup your files before doing this you need a laptop to IDE connector:

About 8 bucks at any PC STORE.
The drive will need to be removed from the laptop so you may want to enlist some help on this step with someone who has done it before,
Then simply connect the drive to any working Desktop machine and copy/burn your important data.

You can then return the drive to the laptop and run the Recovery Dell CD's and the machine will be as it was when you bought it.
i think i've backed up all my files. is there a walk through for reinstalling windows? will reinstalling windows definitely fix the problem?

Solve : Dos Command Help for MD, XCopy and Redirectors?

Answer» HI everyone,

I am a beginner, and I am trying to use MD in MS-prompt to create a folder in a server from my Win XP workstation and use Xcopy to copy some files to that folder.  However, I want to redirect the MD and Xcopy command to another window for the name of that folder.  Should I use the Redirectors to accomplish this?  My guess is to somehow redirect the MD and XCopy to a text file to retrieve the name for the new folder.  Is this correct?  What is the correct syntax to type for this purpose?  I had tried MD \\servername\ < name.txt and Xcopy e: \\servername\ < name.txt.  Both of these failed.  I appreciate all your help for this! This is more geared towards the DOS Forum...so it might get moved there.

Here is a partial answer:

From Batch from what I think I understand you are trying to do, you can not copy data from one DOS-Shell Window to another or grab info from the other window with Batch. You can use macros to do this, but that over complicates things since you would either have to PROGRAM it all as a macro if the routine and data in it is static or if you need some user interface with it to enter any non static information you will have to have your batch run, trigger the macro to interface with the GUI, then after that (keyboard/mouse) macro terminates pick up in the batch where it left off.

Only exception to interfacing to other windows from your Batch running in the DOS-Shell is if you can interface with it BEHIND the scenes via the PID for that Window. But you would likely need 3rd party tools to interface enough with that other window to grab data from it. That is an area that I havent tinkered much with other than for admin purposes of killing windows etc via the PID. But the PID can be used as a reference pointer to that other window and if you can reference to it to that extent you may also be able to use that as a address for routines to grab data from it by a 3rd part tool or use of a PROGRAMMING language like C++ to interface with the memory address of that window to search and extract data from it...VERY COMPLICATED and not sure if that would exactly work, but theoretically it should.

For getting data from a server, I would personally create a mapped drive to that server and use that to run your XCOPY so that your XCOPY is to driveletter:\path\file vs \\servername\path\file etc. I'd use the NET USE command to MAP the drive letter and use a drive letter like Z:\ with is not likely to stomp ontop of any other drives when mounting.

More info on what you are trying to do might help us all aid you better

Hi DaveLembke,

Thank you for your help!  I had mapped the drive as you have suggested.  However, I just want to be able to change the name of the folder from a simple text file.  Using a third party tool just for that seems to be too complicated for me.  I am trying to do this because I want to let my coworkers who are not familiar with the Dos interface to simply type the name of the new folder without going into Dos.  Is there any other way to do this?

Solve : Computer Help (Stuff on Screen Displaces)?

Answer»

I've been having a hard time figuring this out and cannot find it anywhere on the web on how to fix it, so I was hoping that SOMEONE here might know.

For the last month or so, my computer monitor displaces what is on the screen when playing video files (wmv, avi, ETC but not in games or youtube oddly ENOUGH) and occaisionally when viewing still images online. I have no IDEA what is causing this, I've scanned, screened, debugged, defragmented and everything and this problem won't go away and it's extremely bothersome.

It is specific to video files being played in any video player or video editor, but not to embedded video (youtube) or in games. It occaisionally occurs when viewing still pictures online on some websites. I can't figure it out -- when I VIEW such, my screen kind of goes wonky and flashy, and images are duplicated or shifted around on screen before reverting back and forth.

Help!? Try a different monitor, and try your monitor on a different computer. After that you will know where the problem lies. I must say it sounds like the monitor is faulty.

Thanks, I'll try that right now and see what happens

Solve : Delete Desktop Sync Icon?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,
I frequently ADD web site shortcuts to my desktop.  However, the other day something strange happened.  This particular website only had the "copy" function available.  When I clicked "OK" to add to desktop.  It asked me if it was ok to synchronize to desktop icons (i think).  Anyways once I did this, it turned all my other desktop icons BLUE and installed a scrollable box (jpeg image of website) in my upper corner.
I have tried everything to get rid of it, but it is of no avail.
My computer is working fine, but I do not want it there and I want my regular icons back.  Unfortunately My system restore is not an option because that has not been allowing me to go back to an earlier date.
Any suggestions please!  Thanks in advance, PatrickI can only guess but change the theme and back again and SEE if that helps. Maybe delete the jpg icon too, to start with. You can allow web items to desktop in the settings and thats not advised. You can also click right on the open desktop and adjust icon properties there. I'm sure its a trial and error process to find what works.Thank you LOSTCOAST, I sincerely appreciate the help.

After posting on here, I talked with a friend over the phone and we were ABLE to solve the issue.  Now I will post about my system restore inability which seems to be more of a pressing issue.  Once again, thank you!  Patrickunless you have a problem, you can go into control panel, system icon, and and look for the tab for system restore and turn it on. If it wont let you then I would do a full virus scan and malware scan because its usually whats blocking it.

Solve : My deleted items arn't in my recycle bin !!?

Answer»

I just accidently DELETED some excel documents, and I went to get them out of the Recycle bin and they arn't there

Where can I get them from??
Did you double click the recycle bin folder?  That should open to show contents.

Also - did you delete 'normally' or use shift+ delete - which scraps stuff fully.  Chances are the files are there somewhere and you may have to find an undelete prog somewhere and do a SEARCH - there are MANY progs out there.Whats an undelete prog?
Haha sorry im a bit of a beginner at this!Under usual conditions - deleting does not delete PERMANENTLY - it just lets the file table know the space is ''freed up'' for use by other things.  A full delete usually would involve over-writing with zeros or similar (DOD type delete)

Therefore - files can still be there even if no longer showing - and there are programs to help get at these files.  No specific recomendation for you but a search on something like "undelete files" might yield some options.  There are numerous progs out there.

Solve : Win XP Pro freezes on installation - File 'ASMS' i?

Answer»

HELP PLEASE!

Have read many threads on this and other SITES and tried everything suggested (except swap out CD drive - don't have a working older drive to try). This PC is at least 5-6 yrs old - has original Hitachi CD/DVD Drive (reader, not writer). Have unplugged ALL devices from back of computer. Just has (1)internal CD/DVD drive and (1) internal LS120 floppy drive left installed.

Something happened to computer - Windows XP Pro would no longer run. Tried re-installing Windows XP Pro. using OEM CD with hologram. Attempted to do a repair install, instead of a FRESH install - hoping to be able to keep all programs/devices intact.

During installation, computer got stuck on: "The file 'asms' on Windows XP Pro SERV Pack1 CD is needed" Type the path where the file is located and click OK"

"Copy files from: Global Root\Device\CDRom0\I386."

The screen is locked, and I can not type or change anything. Can NOT change the path. Can not hit SHIFT F10 to get to a DOS prompt, etc.
Have tried running in Installation Recovery Mode, and can get a C:\Windows prompt. However, can't copy any files from my CD (D:\) drive. Can't seem to be able to run REGEDIT. Wanted to try the MICROSOFT SUPPORT suggestion (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=311755), but don't know how to get to REDEDIT.

I can get to SETUP mode and back to Windows installation mode, but that's it.

Suggestions on what to try next?
Should I try a "Fresh" Windows install? Will I lose any programs or devices? Will I have to re-install all my programs and hardware all over again, if I install in the same directory on C drive? Note, I have a NTFS file system on HD, not FAT32.   Thanks!my only sugestion get an unatended setup CD install winxp of thatI have this problem when I tries to install media CENTER. The only thing you can really do is get a new disc becuase the disc is read only, and the file is corrupted so this nothin gyou can do about it but try a DIFFERENT CD.I had the same error message when trying to repair WinXP Pro.  My question is where is this ASMS file. I could not find it on factory install disk or on a slipstreamed disk I created. I found a directory ASMS but no file. Does and file actually exist somewhere?

Have you tried this?Have tried the pro BURNER and I still cannot erase my DVD R/WNow he says it happens with several disks. I do not believe it is software. The dvd-burner drive could be faulty, or if you bought a multi pack of RW disks, try a different brand. What I meant when I said Ihave tried several other DVD/RWs, is that I bought a ten pack an have tried most of the others from that pack, still to no avail.

That could be: 1. bad batch 2. brand not compatible. 3. bad or failing drive. Possibly you need to return the 10-pack for a refund. Is it a reputable brand from a reliable source? I mean if you bought the pack from a street trader they could be fake or substandard. Have you ever had success with any other brand -RW disks in that drive?

But why do you need to "erase" a new -RW disk?

I bought the ten pack from ASDA , and downloaded a film onto one of the new discs , then I wanted to erase the film , becase when I tried it on my tv it came up as WRONG disc  and would not play at all, Yet it plays on my computer no problemsNot everybody here will know what ASDA means, this is a world wide forum, but as it goes I get my sherry from there (I'm in the UK too. I get my disks from Maplin) and I never have any problems with that. How are you trying to erase the disc?

Quote
I tried it on my tv

Your TV plays disks? It has a built in DVD player? If that is what you mean, (they sell them in Comet) then it may be a basic player that only takes standard DVD video disks that are pressed or on +R or -R. And not avi format.

By the way, we don't help with pirated stuff so if the film is an avi dvd-rip of a copyrighted title that you got off a torrent or something like that,  then you made a mistake telling us about it.

Maybe it can only HUM, because it doesn't know the WORDS

Have you checked all the CONNECTIONS? (video card, monitor, etc). I TAKE it the PC doesn't beep, either?Edith, could you also provide whatever information you know about the hardware of the computer, such as the processor, RAM, video card, etc.

If you're unsure of these details or where to find them, let us know and we'll help you find it. If the computer is made by a company like Dell, HP, Compaq, etc. then a model number should be enough for us to look up the info on the manufacturer's website.

Also, can you identify the area of the computer the humming sound is originating from?

Solve : How to identify backup program?

What's the difference? Just create a new backup of your critical data a go from there. What do you mean they're "identified with SCSIO"? How about a little more information as to the hardware (particularly the drive) in or connected to this computer. Quote from: quaxo on October 02, 2010, 08:18:26 PM

Solve : Using Shift key to create a batch of emails?

Answer»

Using Windows XP for Professionals.
SISTER's computer uses same.
On her computer I can go to my AOL email, click on "From" column to organize all senders
alphabetically in "batches".
Then, on her computer, I can put a check in the box next to the first email of the chosen
batch, THEN HOLD DOWN THE SHIFT KEY, then check the last email in the batch.
This highlights AND PUTS CHECK MARKS next to all the emails in the batch. Quickly.
Then, I can use the mouse, left click ANYWHERE IN THE BATCH REGION, and drag
all those emails into their folder (which are all displayed in a column to the left of the screen).
When hitting the left button on the  mouse to drag-and-drop, a little FLAG POPS up that
even says exactly how many emails I am moving.
THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN ON MY COMPUTER.
Nothing in "settings" or "shortcuts" within AOL addresses this.  My sister says its not
a function of the email program, but rather of WINDOWS itself.
How can I make this functionality happen on MY computer? How are you ACCESSING AOL's mail? Through a browser or mail client or what? That's what will affect this in the way you're referring to, not the operating system. Are you and your sister using two DIFFERENT versions of AOL?

Solve : ChkDsk memory dump?

Answer»

Pretty much the same story as what you see below.  When I go into F8 safe mode there is just a list of files.  When I run last good config I get problem...Widows shut down to prevent damage. Tech info oxooooooF4 (0x0000000e, 0x85AA0B60, 0x85AA0B60, 0x85AAOCD4, 0x805D2954)
Beginning mem dump....mem dump complete...has run check disk EVERY time which finishes then re-boots but then comes up blue screen with the problem detected screen.  I am very much a beginner.  I also have a laptop with Vista.

My Dell XPS 400 desktop PC with Windows XP (all available updates are installed), will not boot and I am out of options. After the loading screen, it goes to a blue screen (not BSOD, but it may be) and says the volume is dirty and automatically runs a CHKDSK. It fails during step 2 (verifying indexes). Here are the other things I have tried:

-Booting from CD to repair install windows XP, stalls at 25%
-Tried recovery console, chkdsk will not work there either
-Tried to boot in safe mode, did not work, now I am not even given that option.

I only want to get files off of this hard drive but am out of ideas. I have a new Dell XPS M1330 laptop with Vista. Is there a way to hook my PC hard drive to my laptop and access files, or can I purchase a new internal hard drive for the PC, install windows on it, and access my files that way, without having to load windows on my currently jacked-up hdd? I have exhausted my computing skills and am stuck. Please help. When you run checkdisk from the recovery console are you running it with the /r switch? If not, try that (boot to the RC and run chkdsk /r)I'm sorry...I don't know what the r/start is.  I just push the f8 button  when booting the computer.  Could you explain what that is?I don't know if you might make sense of this...but I ran the utillities disk and I got an Error Code: 0F:075D with a msg: IDE device failed.  Happened at: SATA Disk ...also 0F00:0232 msg Block 6422016.Would I use the same diagnostic disk to run the chkdsk/r ?  Sorry...I have read the info on Repair Console and still can't seem to get to the Repair Console...not that I can probably REMEMBER the Admn password (didn't realize how important that was). Not trying to waste your time...just trying to find out if my system is fried.  I got an Error Code 0F00:075D  Msg: IDE device failed.

Happened at SATA Disk  Then another Error 0F00:0232  Msg Block 6422017.

ThanksTechnically, a SATA drive is still IDE. So is PATA (sometimes REFERRED to as just IDE, but is really PATA).

You should download the drive manufacturer's disk diagnostics utility and check the health of the drive. To get to the recovery console you boot to the XP Cd and choose the first repair option. Since your first post says you've run chkdsk from there I ASSUMED you knew how to access it. Alternatively, follow quaxo's advice and download and run the OEM diagnostic.I don't know what the r/start  ,so ,I don't know how to answer your question ,sorry Quote from: luoshenhua on October 07, 2010, 09:06:51 PM

Yeah. That's the drivers getting loaded. It may seem like it locks up at this point, but usually if you wait a few minutes, it will continue booting.

Use your laptop to download and burn a linux distribution to CD. Insert a flash drive or external hard drive into the busted comp. Boot into the linux CD and copy your files to your flash drive. Done! Now you can trash that hard drive and get a new one.

Solve : Color Coding Transfer?

Answer»

I have an Excel database that is color coded. I want to us it for a WORD mail merge and keep the color coding. I there a way to do this?

ThanksI'm almost 100% sure, it can be DONE, if you are willing to learn the computer language VISUAL Basic for Applications (VBA), which has been designed for applications of MS Office, like Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc. You only have to test on the color property of Excel-cells and use the same colors in the format of Word-texts.
Good luck.  QUOTE from: Magoosa on October 07, 2010, 01:34:09 PM

Excel database

Excel is for spreadsheets... Access is the office database program.

So, is it an Excel SPREADSHEET or an Access database?

Solve : How can I tell O.S. that Shutdown.exe is NOT malware ??

Answer»

The System Event log shows that it does not know why it was closed, and does not seem to distinguish between a malware attack and the legitimate CMD.EXE command
SHUTDOWN -s -t 10
It reports
The process winlogon.exe has initiated the restart of ACER-311VPBCEH0 for the following reason: No title for this reason could be found.
I lot of Google results suggest such a message can be due to malware damage ! !

Is it possible for me to give this "reason" a title ?

When I have finished using Windows I launch a BAT script that performs a "bedtime ritual" of throwing out temporary junk files, creating an ERUNT registry backup, etc. etc., and finally shuts down ready for me to knock of the power when I next pass by.  I do not want to have to juggle with the GUI to achieve the final shutdown.

I added arguments -c and -d, but they give no "Title".
Incidentally, I see the effect of -c, but -d seems to do nothing, are my parameters wrong ?

Below is the tail end of my script, and below that is the System Event report when I next logged in.

Alan

The OS is ignorant and reports
"No title for this reason could be found".

I Google searched the pair of phrases
"The process winlogon.exe has initiated the restart of " "the following reason: No title for this reason could be found"
and THAT is where I found the answer that an unexpected shutdown could be due to malware.
another result gave a forum that had no answer other than to use the GUI to select a shutdown.

I know it is not malware because the shutdown was at a time and place of my choosing,
but next week I will have forgotten what I was doing this week.

I can understand the OS wanting to be given a "title for this reason",
but do not understand why its own Shutdown.exe is not providing the title.

When I see the OS not understanding what its own executables have done I wonder if I need a different control argument, and wonder how much longer it can stagger along before it gives nothing but BSODs ! !

Before I started this I ran shutdown /? and its summary was
Usage: shutdown [-i | -l | -s | -r | -a] [-f] [-m \\computername] [-t xx] [-c "comment"] [-d up:xx:yy]
and the -d option was WRONGLY listed as
Code: [Select]-d [u][p]:xx:yy         The reason code for the shutdown
It was WRONG, and so also was the summary example "-d up:xx:yy",
they suggest the 'u' and 'p' may coexist.
I found that shutdown merely presented HELP with my choice of "-d up:34:5678"
Your help screen with "/d [p|u:]xx:yy" clearly denotes that a choice should be made between p and u.

I have no option "-e" listed
I am using XP Home + SP3, I guess you have more options and better documentation with XP Pro.

Thank you very much for the link.  That seems to perfectly fit my need.
I fully expect that after experimenting with that information (and lots of reboots where I failed to get it right) I will be able to return and MARK this as solved.

And why should it? What the *censored* do you expect? some magical fairy-land where every backwater utility that does something like this will be automatically recognized as being run by the user and the daisies and the frogs all sing and play in the fields? First off, Almost all malware will give a stupid reason code and comment, like saying it's a planned shutdown and that they are "restarting for an update" and that's forgetting of course that only "joke" type malware would ever really restart the machine anyway.

So? I Fail to see the relevance. Any number of events could be construed in the wrong way with google. If I was to go by that then all my disks failed years ago, since they almost all inevitably contain messages to the effect of "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk#\DR#" At seemingly random intervals. I'd also have no choice but to reinstall Visual Studio because if I was to believe Event Viewer it neither installed properly nor is ever able to start (but it starts fine).

So? Google for something vague or common and you will get a wide range of results. I'm sure a lot of malware-oriented topics use the word "the" too, but that doesn't mean that you have to label every single instance of "the" in your sentences as not being malware related. It's called context.

The REASON that "the OS is not able to understand what it's executables are doing" is because that would entail that there is a "hook" between the executables and the OS that is wholly undocumented! And if it's documented, then any program, malware or otherwise, could come in and make changes and tell the OS "It's OK, The user told me to do this" or something equally nonsensical. And then one can assume that AV and malware vendors will also look at this "sanctioned by the OS" flag and ignore them, meaning that any form of malware can simply perform all it's task under the guise of being sanctioned by the OS by using the documented interface between its "executables" and the Operating System.

And I'm sure you know why they can't use an undocumented interface. God forbid shutdown.exe be able to use undocumented APIs! How will the competition, which is... the market of shutdown utilities, I guess- cope with such a thing? They'll complain, and then MS will be forced to add an interface anyway and now the malware can pretend to be OS sanctioned. Even if they were somehow able to smuggle in such an undocumented interface, it won't take long for malware writers to stumble upon a way to deal with it that works; generally by disassembling programs like shutdown and seeing what various libraries they are calling and with what arguments, and which point they will find the "undocumented function" that would probably be named something like "InformOSofOSExecutableAction()" or something stupid like that. And then their malware programs can claim to be part of the OS and we are back where we started, which is clearly why this is not being done.

Quote
I have no malware problem, just an OS that is less than perfect.
Of course it isn't "perfect"- that's like saying "the perfect car" It's open to such a wide and equally vague range of interpretations. Is Visual Studio a "perfect" programming environment? Of course not, but personally I think it's better then most of the competing products. Some people think Borland/CodeGear's IDE is better, some prefer Eclipse (which I use for Java myself, but not for any other language it supports) and still others even program using basic text editing and command line tools. Is Windows a "Perfect OS"? Of course not. There is no such thing as a perfect OS, or a perfect software application, for that matter, because such perfection would entail use by Perfect users, like those able to effortlessly use vim.

I'm not sure, but I think the reason codes correspond to those listed here:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa376885%28VS.85%29.aspx

The "reason codes" are codes, not just random numbers you plug in. Of course, it would be nice to have them documented; but we have yet to invent a method of time travel so that we can go back and fix shutdown's help implementation. Still... putting a seemingly random number as a parameter that is listed as "code" is pretty silly. "code" implies a meaning, and it's usually better to know what meaning you are after and then put in the corresponding code for that meaning then fiddle-faddle about with codes until you get something that makes sense.

If a reporting mechanism has failed I want it fixed because when something bad is about to happen it will fail to warn me.

If any warning signal fails I might hope to drive to a local garage and they will simply replace a light bulb,
but I would not ignore the problem till the next 20,000 mile service ! !

Would you blindly ignore such messages if the were NOT random but rock steady consistent.

Because I take notice of warnings, no matter how rare or random, I actually recognize incipient fatal catastrophes and am able to avert disaster.
e.g. I have seen failure to flush data to disk and FTDISK errors and worse in the event log,
and now I avoid the situations that cause loss of data and disk corruption.
In my case the problem was that once Acronis has mounted a disc image for the purpose of exploring its contents,
it is not possible to dismount that image without such errors, but I can leave it mounted and the system manages an orderly shutdown which dismounts without any consequent errors.

Plausible but debatable.
I have used third party defraggers and partition managers and Acronis image restorers,
and all of them are leave the restrictions of running under Windows by rebooting into boot mode operation,
and I have never NOTICED any complaint that a Shutdown was performed without a Title.
If third party software can do it I guess malware can also do it.

BUT the documentation does not align with reality.

Salmon has already shown,in his very helpful post, that the correct usage is

and I understand that the vertical bar denotes ALTERNATIVES and does not indicate a logical OR operation.

Your Post uses the word malware in both the title, as well as the original Post. This problem has nothing to do with malware.

Anyway, did a little looking to see which syntax (allowing both u and p or not) was right, but it's not hard to realize that having both wouldn't make any sense.

the u stands for user code- the p stands for planned. Omitting both indicates an unplanned shutdown. You can use both U and P in XP, but I believe it uses the last one and ignores any before it.

For both, you give the major and minor codes; depending on the combination of the unplanned/planned/usercode and the major/minor reason codes, it should be giving you a different title. If you use u, I don't think you will ever get a visible title. (since it is by definition a user defined code and there is no defined resource string for it)

Quote
to restate my problem :-

There is no "title mechanism"- or, to be more precise, there isn't one given via the shutdown supplied with XP (at least, not a "set your own text string" type). The reason for this is that the "title" is actually represented by the reason code, and the usercode/planned/unplanned status. Then reads a string resource that describes that Combination. I imagine when it says there is no title found then there was no corresponding resource for the combination. (Which again, would be expected with a user-defined code)

To test, I ran this command in my XP VM:

Code: [Select]shutdown -s -f -d p:4:1 -c "I AM A COMMENT"

and, the result? here it is:

TADA! basically, I chose a combination of major/minor/planned/unplanned from the handy chart ST linked (the reason codes, as noted by the linked page, are available via MSDN but you would then have to peruse the header files... or, you could strip the ending zeros off of the Major codes ( found here (0x00040000 turns into simply 4. of course everything above 10 has to be converted from hex. No need for that with the chart though, of course.

If any warning signal fails I might hope to drive to a local garage and they will simply replace a light bulb,
but I would not ignore the problem till the next 20,000 mile service ! !
Not really relevant... we are talking about a shutdown that you (or a script) initiated with the shutdown command. The title might not be particularly helpful but it hardly entails a "warning", it just means that the major/minor+unplanned/planned/user reason code combo you gave doesn't correspond to a system string resource.

Quote
NO I did not complain about absence of COMMENT.  I was complaining about failure to have a TITLE
apologies for that.

Quote
SHUTDOWN -s -t 10 -c "CClean + Shutdown" -d u:34:5678
34 is not a valid major reason code.
5678 is not a valid minor reason code.
you stated u, for usercode. No usercode will ever correspond to a title stringID, if I understand correctly.

Quote
Would you blindly ignore such messages if the were NOT random but rock steady consistent.
Yes. Unless I was of course having real, observable issues. In fact, it's usually me noticing real observable issues that sends me to eventvwr to try to find out the problem. perusing eventviewer as a "preventative measure" is more a waste of time(IMO) then anything; there are far too many red herrings that could make you suspicious that you are infected, or that you have a hardware issue. My video card/driver also crashes whenever I play a DVD or video for a extended period, so I simply don't play videos. I'm sure I could look at the many events for the video card (display driver has stopped responding etc) but none of them will help me diagnose the problem, because It's already pretty obvious- I tried different drivers and that didn't help (and a fresh OS install as well) so it's probably a hardware issue. (oddly, youtube and most online videos work, it's just playing stuff off-line from MP4's and AVI's and so forth that cause it). But enough about that!

Quote
Because I take notice of warnings, no matter how rare or random, I actually recognize incipient fatal catastrophes and am able to avert disaster.
e.g. I have seen failure to flush data to disk and FTDISK errors and worse in the event log,
and now I avoid the situations that cause loss of data and disk corruption.

In my case the problem was that once Acronis has mounted a disc image for the purpose of exploring its contents,
it is not possible to dismount that image without such errors, but I can leave it mounted and the system manages an orderly shutdown which dismounts without any consequent errors.

True, but those Events aren't logged silently; they almost always produce a popup (or at the least, a balloon) that informs you of this. I suppose it could be helpful if it occurs away from the PC, but you aren't going to be psychically dismounting drives from afar. Also, I've had similar issues (actually, the system refused to allow me to remove some flash drive). it's usually just a matter of closing all open explorer windows that accessed it, then it let's me. This might be the case for acronis image browsing (I know it's the story for WinImage disk mounting as well, and things are complicated even more by write-caching).

So? Google for something vague or common and you will get a wide range of results. I'm sure a lot of malware-oriented topics use the word "the" too, but that doesn't mean that you have to label every single instance of "the" in your sentences as not being malware related.
Where is this coming from ?
25,430,000,000 results searching for a vague or common "the"
21,600,000 results searching WITHOUT quotes for "the following reason: No title for this reason could be found"
13,700 results searching WITH  quotes for "the following reason: No title for this reason could be found"
8,230 results searching for above preceded by "The process winlogon.exe has initiated the restart of "

Because, you are searching for "No title for this reason could be found", and the various other phrases in the event; that's a terribly broad search. Of course it's going to find hits related to malware, as with any number of similar searches (you could search for, say "winword has stopped responding" and some of those hits are sure to be malware related). However, finding google results that refer to malware with a query like that is not any sort of conclusion that what you have is related to malware. You know that you initiated the shutdown, and that it most certainly is not "malware", and you just needed to find out why there wasn't a title given (which is, of course, why you posted here) Truly, though, it was not the O.S saying that it was malware; it was your google searches on what the OS said. (different).

Quote
If you think my search was vague, please tell me how I could be more precise and still get more than zero results.
you aren't really searching "properly" (if there is such a thing) Basically, you are searching for the effect(no title in the event), and not the cause(using shutdown isn't giving it a title)  you are looking for why your own initiated shutdown didn't have a title, so a more accurate search would have been something like  shutdown + "No title for this reason could be found" - the forth hit is the link Salmon Trout gave; the first hit is the MSDN link to reason codes.

Quote
The process winlogon.exe has initiated the restart of ACER-311VPBCEH0 for the following reason: No title for this reason could be found.

Guess what, Google has a single result this afternoon - Google has already found my cry for help and is quoting this post.
Of course you'd get a hit to this thread with that query. I doubt anybody else has a machine named ACER-311VPBCEH0.

Quote
THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF THIS POST IS BECAUSE I DID NOT KNOW HOW TO TELL IT TO !
INDEED. AS I NOTED BEFORE THAT WAS MY MISTAKE. I DO APOLOGIZE FOR MY CONFUSION. THX.

Quote
Plausible but debatable.
I have used third party defraggers and partition managers and Acronis image restorers,
and all of them are leave the restrictions of running under Windows by rebooting into boot mode operation,
and I have never noticed any complaint that a Shutdown was performed without a Title.
If third party software can do it I guess malware can also do it.

The third party defraggers, partition managers, and image restorers all give valid, planned reason codes that correspond to appropriate string resources that can be displayed by event viewer. However, I was more addressing the broad assertion that there should be some more tight coupling between the utilities (in this case, shutdown) and the results they create (shutting down the system, adding events to the event log). your original post made it seem like you thought the OS was implicitly saying "OMG the computer shut down cuz of malware"; your statement:

Quote
When I see the OS not understanding what its own executables have done I wonder if I need a different control argument, and wonder how much longer it can stagger along before it gives nothing but BSODs ! !
seems to say that you think there are (or should be, or is) a tighter coupling between components of windows and the OS itself; this would, as I noted, mean that the components would need to access undocumented APIs to essentially tell the OS what it's done; shutdown, is really just a program. it doesn't use any special code. (and I won't get into any sort of "OMG MS uses a lot of undocumented functions in like word and IE" argument at CH, I get into it quite enough elsewhere, heh).

Quote
I agree that the document indicates the same as I have already seen with SHUTDOWN /?
BUT the documentation does not align with reality.
It does; to a point. you just can't use U and P at the same time, although the documentation appears to say otherwise.

Quote
Salmon has already shown,in his very helpful post, that the correct usage is
/d [p|u:]xx:yy  Provide the reason for the restart or shutdown.
and I understand that the vertical bar denotes ALTERNATIVES and does not indicate a logical OR operation.
I think, you can use both p and u at the same time. It worked for me, but I think it might have simply ignored the P (it comes up with the "no title for this event.etc" title). I'm not sure if it is actually taking both into consideration; I think it ignores the P when you specify U.

Quote
You should have looked at the end of my first post, you would have seen that I used
SHUTDOWN -s -t 10 -c "CClean + Shutdown" -d u:34:5678
and the System Event log actually displayed
 Minor Reason: 0x162e
 Shutdown Type: shutdown
 Comment: CClean + Shutdown
But it still complained that it had not been given a Title.

I meant it more along the lines of, if you use a user code that doesn't correspond to a title string, such as major code 34 and minor code 5678, then you should use the comment to indicate the nature of the shutdown. Or, you could fix the major/minor codes and set it as a planned shutdown. Basically what I meant was not having a title isn't that bad. You can always indicate things with the comment, which truly is the only way to add user-defined info to the event item, anyway.

Sorry, misquoted him there.I was doing the best I could with limited and inaccurate information in response to
SHUTDOWN /?

The help screen told me I could supply code xx less than 256 and yy less than 65536
It said absolutely nothing about needing particular specific codes to result in a title.
It never even hinted that a Title might appear as a result of a special code.

I Googled to find out how to tell XP the information it needed to know to do its job properly,
and finding nothing via that route I came here for some friendly advice ! ! ! !

I am happy to say that due to Salmon's post and his link I was able to achieve perfect results with
SHUTDOWN -s -t 10 -c "CClean + Shutdown" -d p:2:4
The result is

I cannot resist remarking that no computer system, whether running Windows XP or any other computer software, has the ability to "know" anything, or to do "its job" in any other way than the way that it is instructed to do. Solve : critical error control?

Answer»

hello
I am new here ,I have a critical error in my system info .here is what it looks like.

file                             type            started       start mode     state      STATUS     error control
c:\windows\syst...kernel driver     yes            boot               running     OK         critical

what does this mean. If you need to ask what an event in eventviewer means then you really have no business fiddling about with event viewer.

Additionally, unless you are experiencing problems, ignore event viewer. Quote from: BC_Programmer on October 05, 2010, 03:48:19 AM

Additionally, unless you are experiencing problems, ignore event viewer.
+1The entry is informational

At the time of the log entry:

started: yes = service had started
start mode: boot = starts at boot
state: running = it was running
status: OK = self explanatory
error control: critical = The INF file specifies the error control level.  If the driver fails to load and system startup is not using the registry's LastKnownGood control set, switch to LastKnownGood and try again. If startup still fails when using LastKnownGood, run a bug-check ROUTINE. (Only devices/drivers necessary for the system to boot specify this value in their INF files.)

    0x0 (SERVICE_ERROR_IGNORE)
If the driver fails to load or initialize, proceed with system startup and do not DISPLAY a warning to the user.
    0x1 (SERVICE_ERROR_NORMAL)
If the driver fails to load or initialize its device, system startup should proceed but display a warning to the user.
    0x2 (SERVICE_ERROR_SEVERE)
If the driver fails to load, system startup should switch to the registry's LastKnownGood control set and continue system startup, even if the driver again indicates a loading or device/driver initialization error.
    0x3 (SERVICE_ERROR_CRITICAL)
If the driver fails to load and system startup is not using the registry's LastKnownGood control set, switch to LastKnownGood and try again. Solve : MS Internet Explorer 8, Content Password?

Ok! I messed up, I admit my epic fail.  but can somebody please explain to me how to get the stupid content filter DISABLED after I set it too high and then "Forgot, yes I said forgot" the stupid password.  I have tried opening it in safe mode, I have uninstalled it, then downloaded and installed a new version.  Yet the insipid thing CONTINUES to hold guard over my ability to download mods for several of my games, or download updates direct from MS. because they only work with IE,  everything else I do is with Firefox browser. it works fine.  Is there NO way to change the stupid password, I am the Administrator, and I want to change the password, or remove it or something. Solve : run up and paging speed?

Answer»

I RECENTLY had a crash of my PC and had to replace the hard drive. My repair service upgraded my hard drive from 80 to 160. I am running a Celeron CPU 2.7 and 1.2 Ram.

Since the repair , my run up time and time to page to page , and click to links, has increased quite a bit.

Are these two things related ?
I have run my Avast FULL addition, and Malwarebytes free addition, and show no problems.

What STEPS can I take to speed up .

Thanks in advance

Bucxwhat are "run up time" and "page to page"? Quote

Are you talking about your internet being slow? If your internet is slower, it's probably your service provider. If you think it's part of the upgrade, then have you tried the following?

Defrag
CCleaner
Unchecking startup items in msconfig
Ending some services
Google chrome
Firefox

If you need any help with any of these, just post. Quote from: Linux711 on October 06, 2010, 12:52:52 PM

1) DO NOT use msconfig to permanently prevent PROCESSES from starting. Use a dedicated app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml)

Solve : Transfer via flash drive?

I want to transfer data on microsoft word on to my netbook which only has microsoft word pad.  Is that possible and if so, how?Depending on what version of Word Wordpad should be able to open them....you may lose some formatting however.

Another OPTION is to install Open Office which is Free on the machine that does not have Office.Yes. Just be sure that when your saving the document in word, you select Rich TEXT Format *.rtf*. That way both word and word pad will be able to open and EDIT the file.

This is really your best option.  It's one thing to be able to transfer a few files, but this will give you much more useful features in the future.Wordpad on windows 7 can open Word 2007 files.

Wordpad on XP can open .DOC Binary format files, but I they have to be saved as Word 97 format.

Solve : Online video crashes computer?

Answer»

Whenever I attempt to watch a video online (Hulu in particular, among others) my computer suddenly locks up. I do not receive a blue screen, what happens is my computer loses responsiveness to mouse and keyboard input and all graphics stop entirely. I can still hear sound but it sounds as if it has been slowed down to a fraction of the normal speed and gets high pitched robotic static sound garbled in. I've tried reinstalling macromedia and java in hopes that it may solve the problem and I've even gone so FAR as to reinstall mozilla FIREFOX (my primary browser) and test INTERNET Explorer, getting the same results from IE. I installed a new graphics card back in June but this problem only recently occurred a month ago. This is similar to a problem I had with my 9500 GT graphics card. For a few months everything was fine, but then it started to lock up when watching flash video. At first, I was able to close out of the browser and regain control, but after a few more days it WOULD lock up for about a minute and then the BSOD would come up. I ended up RMAing the card, and the replacement has been working fine for about a month now.

Do you have another graphics card that you could put in to test if it solves the problem?

Solve : Full screen problem in game - not sure if it's directx, XP, or mouse drivers.?

Answer» HELLO,

Basically I'm posting here as a last ditch effort.

I recently bought a game called Mount & Blade Warband.  THe Problem is, when in true fullscreen, the mouse pointer doesn't move.  The mouse functions, and the game reads/reacts to inputs, but the cursor will not follow.  it just stays locked midscreen.  If I run in windowed mode, everything works fine, but the game is slow and clunky as it was meant to run in fullscreen.

the game company only has a forum for "tech support" but they don't actually respond to alot, have an official troubleshooting section, and basically just use the forum to try and find bugs and then release patches.  Unfortuanatly for XP users, no one responds with anything other than "update your drivers."

I have two machines, a Compaq Presario desktop (primary comp) and an Acer Aspire NETBOOK someone gave me.  Both Run XP.  After having the pointer issue on the Presario, I installed the game on the Aspire.  It functioned as intended.  HOWEVER the Aspire isn't a gaming machine.  It has a small monitor, less than 1 gig RAM, and 1.6ghz processor. also it only has a 7~gig disk which with all the XP files and other crap leaves barely any room for anything.  I;ve pretty much REMOVED everything I could, leaving about less than 2~gig.  the game is like 900 mb.  I only say because after everything there's less than 500mb.  I set the paging file to 300mb which is really low.  So even though it runs the game, it's incredibly choppy even on the lowest visual settings.  but it was all intended just to test anyway.

My compaq isn't a super machine either, 1.8ghz ,128mb vmem (from the Vcard), 1.1g Ram, and i set like 3gb VRAM (pagefile).  It runs the game fine enough in fullscreen (with the exception of the mouse pointer) but it slows down when run in windowed mode as i said.

So I started looking at the differences in the two machines.  and I noted that even though both are running the same version of directx9, the Acer has more recent versions of alot of the actual dll files associated with DX  and also the windows mouse driver mouclass.sys and I'm thinking that's the issue.  Unfortunatly, I don't know how to update the mouclass.sys file as it's protected by windows. I pulled the mouclass.sys file off the Acer and have tried in vain to get the Compaq to use it.  regardless what I do, windows just writes over it again.

Pretty much the same thing for the directx files.  when i try to download it from microsoft, the webupdater just says the most recent version is already installed.  and if i try to pull direct x off like a game CD or something it doesn't update the dll files.

i've literally tried everything else.  changed display settings, resolutions, mouse visiblity settings, UNINSTALLED and reinstalled the game numerous times, tried to use windows hardware update wizard to update mousedrivers to no avail.  nothing i've done works.

So basically unless anyone has any other ideas, i'd like to ask how to update mouclass as I can't find an installer or anything from microsoft.  And how to go about actually updating the directx dlls.

Solve : remote desktop and remote assistance?

Answer»

My desktop is a Compaq Presario with XP HOME SP3. My laptop is a Dell Vostro 1000  with Windows 7. I have checked both computers to allow remote desktop and remote assistance. I can remote into my laptop from my desktop but I can't remote from the laptop into my desktop. I turned the firewall off on my laptop but STILL couldn't remote into the desktop. Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this problem. Are both machines firewalls off? When you try to remote do you send a request to the other machine? What EXACTLY HAPPENS?
I have heard of issues with remote assistance between Windows 7\ Vista and XPWindows XP has this known compatibility issue with 7. You could try to send an invitation file from XP to 7. The invitation has been known to fail as well specifically when trying to connect through SNMP devices. You can use alternative connection methods like VNC or Logmein.com. If you are on the same network VNC is great and free too. If you will be on the road with the laptop I would recommend Logmein.com or some other web based service. There is also TeamViewer...

falcon you'll need to provide lots more info for us to assist such as whats on each drive....how they were setup etc.Hi falcon, if you can provide the full error message / dump and your computer specs, they can help us help you in troubleshooting.

The bug check code 0x0000007F is UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP.
This indicates that a trap was generated by the Intel CPU and the kernel failed to catch this trap.

Either a bound trap (a trap the kernel is not permitted to catch)
or a double fault (a fault that occurred while processing an earlier fault, which always results in a system CRASH).

Bug check 0x7F usually occurs after the installation of faulty or mismatched hardware (especially memory) or in the event that installed hardware fails.

A double fault can occur when the kernel stack overflows. This can happen if multiple drivers are attached to the same stack.

Is that a new second hard drive your attempting to install?

If hardware was recently added to the system, remove it to see if the error recurs.

Confirm that all hard disks, hard disk controllers, and SCSI adapters are listed on the Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility List and supported by your motherboard (or if newer hardware check the BIOS Flash Updates hardware compatible list - sometimes they RELEASE a newer hardware list and you just have to update first before it will support it).

If all else is failuring still - press F8 on boot and select from the Windows Advanced Options menu, the 'Last Known Good Configuration' option to remove out POSSIBLE bad incompatible driver(s) to the system state it was happy at before.

A crack, a scratched trace, or a defective component on the motherboard can also cause this error. In which case it would need repairs. Hopefully it's not this and just new hardware you have lately installed? Quote from: Azzaboi on October 02, 2010, 12:13:02 PM

Solve : Windows - Need Immediate Help! (!)?

Answer»

Ok, so I wanted to use one of my dads test PC's in order to run some old 2K and XP games, when I turned it on, it came up with the Windows File Protection message, I never seen it before, though last night I seen him exchanging a few disks in the CD-ROM. Im using this PC right now so the keyboards kinda crappy and its hard to type on it. :/

But anyways this is one of my dads PCs and he'll surely be really angered if he FINDS out one his hospital/friends PC's hes suposed to repair is mecked up... So I need help as soon as possible, n like I said, Im afraid to restart, because I think it might not boot again... What should I do?
this is windows XP Sp3.

Heres a pic of my situation...

Thanks. Oh and this is not my PC, like I said, nor do we even own it so please do not try to blame me for copyright or anything stupid, because those apps I did not install anyways... whatever.

Like I said, I need help bad. Please reply as soon as possible if you can... appreciate! You normally get that when a 3rd party application replaces a Microsoft file with its own. For example some defrag programs will replace part of the Windows files so you can setup a schedule or some thing that windows doesn't offer.

You may have triggered the file check during your game install. In most cases you can click cancel and move on...but you should know what files were replaced and why.

I would suggest that you click on the more information button and post what it says. Maybe we can get an idea as to what happened.

Also, just a little advice.

How many times have you 'used your dad's pc' only to find that something has happened which you don't know how to fix. I think the thing that you really need to learn is..............Leave your dads stuff alone!! Quote from: reddevilggg on September 30, 2010, 04:24:12 PM

Alright then I know. But I was afraid that if I turn it off it would fail to boot up because the files would be corrupted... Hmmm
And like I said, I only used it to play an old game I couldn't play on Windows 7, tried compatibility mode and everything. Only worked on XP, it was one of the computers he picked up from somewhere, looked like they had been thrown out, but he took them and repaired them and plans on selling them to some poor family or whatever such in need.

It's probably safe to shut it down when this happens- usually. Since you booted it fine up to that point That's almost certain.

Well of course things would have to happen due to a user error or even user-caused, because there's never really been a problem where the user hasn't done anything and it just happens.

No problem happens by itself anyhow, so it just goes to prove sometimes nobody is perfect.

And of course some problems can be caused by a user accident but that's OKAY. Also you guys are really starting to tick me off. Try slaving your HD first to another computer. If its still readable or accessible. Assuming you had made the correct assembly, installation of OS and drivers. Better yet reformat(HD) it from another computer and use it to point to another hardware problem on the unbootable CPU.thanks but i dont believe it can be that ... it wont even boot up to bios.... nd i have tried unplugging both H/D and put in my windows boot disc and ... nothing...
ALSO there is no beeps:(
Although i am not a Techguy but i just want to give my take on this problem, PC not making a beep sound and the BIOS not loading clearly show hardware incompatibility and nothing else.  Check to make sure the "all the IDE'S" are snug in its socket: also the jumper of the HD is Primary master.

If these wont help better take your PC to a Tech personnel..... Quote

Did'nt see the "s" on your hard DRIVE. Ok you have 2 hard drives, with two OS(installed for dualboot)? Did it came to a point that it was running without this issue after you set-up or not? You mention you have new hardware components. Are they bought for replacements, upgrades or what?the new parts were a project of someone elses who never put it together.... the computer worked great for about a month with no issues.... then came home one night  and,,,,, nothing  is happening
Free suggestions:

Borrow a known GOOD PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there...

DOUBLE check all connections to drives MBoard power etc...

Try it with only the bare essentials:

MBoard
CPU/fan assembly
1 stik of RAM
Vid Card if needed
Mouse
Keyboard
Monitor.

HDD is not neccessary for this test...we just want to see if it will POST.

Solve : Wifi randomly drops and will not reconnect?

Answer» WIFI will work fine, and then for no APPARENT REASON drop the connection.  Even though I can see the Wifi network, it will not reconnect when I try.  The only solution is to reboot, which so far always works.  Problem is that it will then drop Wifi connection again, usually in less than 30 minutes.  Will happen over and over again over a couple hour period.

Use a hard connection daily at work, so problem happens when I travel or try to use laptop from home.

How far are you from the wireless access point?

Is this an onboard wireless adapter (i.e.: INSIDE of a laptop via mini-PCI card and an antenna ARRAY around the lid) or is it an expansion card (i.e.: PCMCIA card, express card, PCI card, PCI-Express card)?

Did you go to the PC manufacturer's site (or the card manufacturer's site) and download updated drivers?  If not, try that.

Solve : how do you backup the OS to CD-Rom??

Answer»

I have a laptop COMPUTER with the OS on a separate partition instead of being on CD-Rom disc. I WANT to reformat C drive and re-install the OS but would like to make a copy first (just in case). I don't recall how to do this and I'm not the original owner of the computer. Thanks It varies from manuf. to manuf....check their site for details or consult the owners manual. You can't backup just OS.

You can create an image of your entire hard drive, FORMAT drive and put the image BACK on clean hard drive.
That image won't fit on CD, or DVD. You need an external hard drive to do it. Quote from: haus_kat on September 28, 2010, 05:27:09 PM

The separate partition you refer to is the Restore Partition.  There's usually a hot key (Ctrl+F11) that allows reformatting and reinstalling the OS without loss of the Restore Partition.
Here's how it work for Dell:  http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/index.htmwhat I meant is how do I make the CD-Rom disc? In the past, many computers came with a copy of the OS on a disc but nowadays they don't (such as in  the case of this laptop) and just have the OS on a partition. Usually there is a way to make a CR-Rom of the OS just to have it. I wanted to do that but can't recall how. On an older computer I have there was some step-by-step program built into the computer detailing how to do it but it's been such a long time that I don't recall how/where to access it (if the laptop even has such a program). The laptop computer is a Compaq Presario V5000.

OS, no, recovery CD, yes, if your Compaq allows it.

Solve : no regsvr32 & bat files don't work?

Answer»

Hi !

I recently learned my XP Pro doesn't have regsvr32.exe so I'm unable to register dlls and I don't seem able to run bat files either.  They simply blink and go away without any sign of error or success.  Is there any relationship between these problems?

When I tried to download regsvr32.exe from MS (I googled regsvr32.exe and went to the microsoft site, I ended up with an .exe file with a different name (regsv32a.exe or something like this) and when I ran it, it caused a bizarre problem.  All the capital letter M's that were associated with any kind of link disappeared from my browsers and were replaced with a blank space, so I went back to an earlier restore point to undo this.

I've been using my computer for around 4 years.  It has XP Pro, which I've reinstalled a number of times.  It's current in its MS updates (also SP3).  I use Avira free and Sygate.  I recently replaced the mother board, chip and graphics card and put XP Pro back on and it's working fine.

Could you help me figure out why my bat files are not working and where I can get a copy of regsvr32.exe?  I don't know anyone with XP Pro, so I can't borrow a cd.

Thanks.
If you don't think you have a malware problem I'd suggest a repair install (boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option). When it's finished, go to MS Update to re-download and install all updates.sorry, I didn't word my statment correctly.  I just did a reformat and clean install when I put in the new motherboard and chip.

Is regsvr32.exe normally included in an XP-Pro clean install or is it an optional file that is only included on request?  (I know there are some programs that are automatically installed in some countries, but not in other countries, but I don't know if this is one of them).

If it's an optional file and I can get it off of the cd, how do I do that?  How do I go into the cd and get a file?  Do I have to boot up the computer with the cd, choose R and go into the repair options, do a DIR command to find the file and then do a simple DOS copy of the file from the CD to the Win32 system file in my computer?

Thanks.
Where is this XP CD from ? ?Hello patio,

I'm sorry for jumping to conclusions, but your question (with two question marks) feels like a suggestion more than a question?

The xp cd came with my computer when I bought it.  I've used both the computer and the operating system for about 4 years and have used the cd for several reformats and reinstallations.  I activated it with Microsoft with the activation code on the package.  I just recently reformatted and reinstalled the operating system.

So far in this topic, I've received the information that if I'm missing a file called regsvr32.exe, I should either get it off a cd or do a repair installation of my operating system and when I asked how to get it off the cd, I was then questioned regarding the validity of my xp cd.

This is not helpful.  My questions have been relatively simple ones and my experience with this website up to this time was always good.

I ran sfc /scannow and it did not report any missing files to replace.  I would like to know, when I see with my own eyes that a file is missing from my computer and it appears to be a common file that anyone would have in their computer, how do I go about getting it off of the cd and into my computer?  This must be a fairly straight-forward question.

Thanks for your help.
alenIf sfc /scannow doesn't restore the file, let's make sure it's actually "missing" before we proceed. Regsvr32.exe should be in the \windows\system32 folder. Please open Windows Explorer and make sure it's not there. If it is not, open msconfig and on the GENERAL tab use the EXPAND FILE button (with the XP CD in the drive) to extract the file from the disc.Hi Allan,

My brain finally kicked in and I have to apologize.  sfc /scannow didn't fix the file and msconfig couldn't access it for some reason, so I started thinking finally.  I checked the size of system32 on the cd and compared it with the size of system32 in C:\ and found the one in C:\ was missing about a 1000 files, so ... I went back and followed your original instructions to do a Repair Install.  Now regsvr32.exe is there where it belongs.  Sorry I didn't want to believe a clean install could be damaged, but that seems to have been the case.

Sorry also to patio.  I UNDERSTAND now why patio may have thought there could be something WRONG with the cd.  I've never had this problem before, so I wasn't expecting it this time.

I will now see if I can register dll's and continue on with my original quest that brought all this up, which is to try and get malwarebytes uninstalled from my computer so I can put it back on.

Thanks very much for your help.

From the MBAM Forums...you may want to give Revo Uninstaller a try as well...Hi Patio and Allan,

I'm happy to report that I finally got all my current problems resolved.  I have not yet tried to  run a bat file or register dll/ocx files, because I can't think of a harmless way to test these, but I do now have a working copy of malwarebytes and regsvr32.exe is back.  This feels good!

Thanks for all your help.  You got me on the right track.

Good news indeed...

However not being to remove/run/update MBAM is almost always a sign of a serious infection...
Start a Topic over in our Malware support SECTION and post your logs for our Experts to have a looksee....

Here..."not being to remove/run/update MBAM is almost always a sign of a serious infection"

Do you mean, that because the repair install of Windows fixed the problem, that this was not an adequate solution and the computer could be infected, even though I can now remove/run/update MBAM with no problems?

My understanding from the first reply to this topic, was that the error messages I got were known problems and there was nothing in No. 15 of the FAQs to suggest that these errors relate to an infection.  Should all people who have these particular errors then assume they have malware?Sorry misunderstood.....after e re-install any infection would be gone.
Disregard the above.yeah, this turned out to be a problem.  When I read serious infection, I decided it would be faster to reformat than go to the experts.  When I first put in a new motherboard, it didn't like my windows installation, so I had to reinstall it.  When I did that, it switched my drive names from c to d and from d to c, so when I reformatted this time, I told it to reformat the drive that it identified as being the one that had the operating system  (i.e. drive d) and then it broke down with a BLUE SCREEN.  Ah, computers!  Don't you love em?  Oh well, I see it as good training.  My computer is teaching me.  My next lesson will be to learn how to slave one hard drive to the other to try and pull my data over.  Then I'm going to wipe everything and start from scratch.  Hopefully I can do that with a boot cd.  Ask and you shall recieve...

" Disk boot fail"
 Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart

your Boot Manager will not be able to boot Windows XP, etc. I spend all night in order to figure that out and the results was failure all the time. But I found an even easier way to do it but it will cost you a HDD format.
Follow these few steps and I hope they will help you.

1) Format your C: HDD
2) Split the C: HDD into 2 partitions.
3) On the first partition install Windows XP.
4) On the second partition install Windows 7, SINCE the Boot Manager is much newer than that of Windows XP.
5) When you manage to do these, whenever you will boot your PC, the Boot Manager will show you 2 options:

Older version of windows (which is windows xp)
Windows 7

so now you can choose which windows you will operate.
It worked for me so I think it will also work for you. Ignore the above post and follow the instructions in the link I provided above.Couldn't agree more... Quote from: pcjoseph1974 on July 01, 2010, 05:45:01 AM

Do you mean Office program files or files you've created with Word, Excel, etc.?  What exactly is the problem?  Good catch Soybean...Thanx. Quote from: soybean on July 01, 2010, 08:56:22 AM

Yes my mean MS WORD, EXCEL especially. But Powerpoint work well. However, those files in zip folder also safe from corruption. You still have not clearly answered my question.  I'll re-state it.  Are you saying files you've created such as myfile.doc (a Word file) and myspreadsheet.xls (an Excel file) won't open even though Word and Excel, i.e. the Word and Excel programs, will start and display as usual on your screen?  Or, are you saying Word and Excel will not start, apparently due to corrupt program files?  Quote from: soybean on July 01, 2010, 07:05:00 PM

First of all I am very thankful to you for your reply. Bro my word and excel program starts and showing this message when I try to open it "Select the encoding that makes your document readable". Normally my office work well. But this message comes after some weeks even after one month. Files that I made during that period become corrupted.  Now I am attaching a file. I hope this will help you to understand.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Looking at the file in my text/hex editor (editpad), it looks an awful lot like a renamed executable. It didn't work in my VM when I renamed the file to EXE though.

So I ran it through File Analyzer; it gives this:

Quote
Processing file  : GDB.DOC
Large file name  : GDB.doc
DOS File size    : 24,064/00005E00
Created          : 04:43:02  Jul, 02 of 2010
Processed with(1): CPShrink Archive
Extension (    1): Microsoft Word Document File

CPSHrink is extremely old... it's pretty much what the closest match was.

For a Office 97-2003 document, the program is able to determine that it is indeed a word document. I also tested it with word 2007; the program correctly determines that the docx is really a zip file (which is is) and lists the contents.

Clearly, the attached file is not a word document; at least, not the whole thing.

Looking closer, I suspected some sort of EXE because it quite clearly says ".text", ".rdata" ".rsrc" which indicate code sections. However, it lacks any sort of MZ header (I tried running it as a COM as well but since it's >64k I doubted that would work... and it didn't, just gave a NTVDM Fault.

Curiously, there are specific entries related to registry keys:

"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion" specifically.

It isn't until about halfway down the page that things look word-like (paragraph, font, etc structures)

my thoughts? Since you (the Original Poster) have mentioned that these files used to open properly, the best we can surmise is that they were changed. It looks almost as if a PDF, executable, and the original word document have somehow been mixed together. Now- I can think of two possibilities- first, and rather unlikely, is that the disk is rather unreliable and you somehow manage to keep having cross-linked files. the second, and more probable (given the information) is that you may ACTUALLY be infected, or a computer that handles the document file is infected with a VIRUS, and that virus blatantly attaches itself inside files. I'm not well versed on the Binary Doc format or it's header but it doesn't look like there is a magic number anywhere in the file at all, indicating that this may be a rather simple virus that OVERWRITES a section of the file.
On the other hand, it could easily be some sort of accidental file corruption or something. it's hard to say.

I think that the fact that your Word and excel documents are the only Office documents that are "corrupted" is a clue as well; many less skilled virus authors merely "infect" files with certain extensions; they may have chosen to have the virus infect DOC and XLS files but never actually tested it, so the virus merely infects doc files the same WAY it would exe files, which would be to inject executable code (there is, without a doubt, parts of an EXE file in there); additionally, a simple virus of this sort would not be able to look inside and modify the contents of ZIP files (zipped folders) which means, as was stated, they would not be corrupted.

On the other hand, I could be completely wrong. But that's my take on it. I'd do a complete AV and Anti-malware scan of all machines that handle this file. The fact that it corrupts "over time" indicates that the files may not be processed/stored on the computer for a while. Also, do a disk check- the cross-linked theory could well be the case.
When you create new files in Word, are they OK (not corrupted) when you save them and then open them, at least for some period of time?

Regarding the file you attached to your post, has it been passed around to different users via email or some other means?  Is it a file you originally created?  Do you use only the English language on your computer?

Do you, or does anyone else who might have used this file on a different computer, use software to CONVERT Word files to PDF, or vice versa?  Quote from: soybean on July 02, 2010, 06:49:05 AM

Solve : How do I obtain a Windows XP CD that supports Recovery via USb port?

Answer»

you may disagree as to what Microsoft wants done with the OS, but that was not the MAIN point in my post, which was,  to enable the INITIAL post writer to obtain better use of his machine by enabling USB boot if possible.Perhaps fpr the FUTURE...

http://www.technixupdate.com/create-a-bootable-usb-drive-with-xp-recovery-console-with-usb-recovery-console/Also, there are other ways to do, in effect, the same thing.
If the OP had used one of the many commercial and shareware and free backup utilities available, he would find many that can indeed boot from a USB device.

Also, Windows XP can be INSTALLED and re-installed without a CD. Oops, we already said that earlier.
