Solve : Computer is not booting in normal mode.?

Answer»

Been having this problem for a few hours now and have had no success in fixing it. The problem is that the computer will load to the black windows xp page, the bars on that page will load, and then it switches off that screen and prepares to load the desktop, but never does. The screen is frozen black. I can load the computer in safe mode and safe mode with networking, but that is it. I have not seen any error messages during startup/ blue screen.

I have tried these things to no avail:
- System RESTORE
- Disk checking error thing (will not load past step 2 out of 5 during the error checking and actually made it where I could not use safe mode at all for a while)
- Using selective startup disabling anything but BASICS from loading
- Using diagnostic startup
- Using the RECOVERY disks that were made when computer was bought about a year ago (the first disk will load a blank grey screen as if it were going to work, but never LOADS)
- Using the recovery agent on the computer (says it is not available in safe mode)

Thoughts?

If your not even able to boot off of a recovery disc then this is a hardware issue..

Post the make/model of the computer...

I have seen similar problems with display adapter drivers.

What happens is the Windows generic drivers will work during the boot process until it is TIME to load the display adapter software / drivers.

This is why safe mode with / without networking is able to display the OS, it doesn't need and doesn't load the third party software.

Try going into safe mode with networking and go into device manager. Once there expand the display adapter option and CHOOSE to automatically update any display adapter software.

This problem usually occurs with a GPU, so if you have onboard graphics you could try using it instead until the problem is resolved.Ok, I removed a ram stick and the computer loaded past the black windows xp screen to the password screen, where it let me put the password in, and then loaded my desktop back ground but NOTHING else (no desktop icons, start bar, etc). It will also not recognize my mouse after I load normal mode and have plugged in and restarted several times.Try Safe Mode and see if you get mouse and icons back..

Solve : What did I do this time????

Answer»

I have an HP with WinXP. I deleted some old programs I never used or have not used for years. On several forums I frequent, titles of new threads or threads with new posts are highligted in bold TYPE. After I read them, the type is unbolded. Now, the thread titles stay in bold type. This is inconvenient but I worry about what else I did.

Does anyone know what program/software unbolds type on thread titles? Quote from: artbuc on April 15, 2010, 05:41:55 PM

Deleting IE Temporary files, cookies.

Thanks for your quick response but I don't follow. I routinely delete temporary files and it has never affected the unbolding of thread titles in the various forums I read. Before I removed these old programs, thread titles would automatically unbold after I read them.

Are you suggesting I delete temporary files now to restore the automatic unbolding capability? There is no app that bolds/unbolds any Forum output...
What you are seeing is on the other end...not neccessarily yours.Yes, the problem was resolved. I did have to delete cookies (I usually delete temporary files except cookies) and then log-in to the forum. Now everything works like it did before. I think this is what Computer Commando was TELLING me to do. Thanks CC!

Update: NOPE, it did npt work. It was working last night after I dletee cookies and re logged-in, but this morning it is not unbolding after I read the thread. Something has changed and I don't know what.As patio SAID, the problem is either on their end or with cookies. To prove it, delete ALL cookies again and try - I'll bet it works as expected. You can try deleting all cookies + the index.dat file this time - see if that helps. Also, what happens if you use a different browser? Thanks Allan. How do I delete the index.dat file? Could this have something to do with my CCleaner settings? Quote from: artbuc on April 17, 2010, 06:49:39 AM

Solve : reformatting hard drive w/ Windows XP?

Answer» OKAY, my friend ask me to reformat his desktop computer. He's currently USING Windows XP Home. A 500GB hard disk partitioned in 2 drives. System FILES are in C Drive, while his DATA files are in D Drive.

I found the instructions here CH000647 but I have questions...
My friend asked me to reformat only the C Drive and install Windows XP Professional. The D Drive must remain the same and no data files should be deleted. In my experiences, I reformat all the drives and fresh installed the Windows XP. Am I in a safe side if I reformat only the C Drive? Can anyone give me the safe instructions on how to reformat the C drive only and without deleting the D drive?Boot to the XP CD and start the install process. You will be asked where you want to install it - say c: drive. You will be asked if you want to format the drive first - say yes. That's it.

Do not delete any partitions and do not tell the system to format d: drive. The only way you can do any harm to d: drive is if you specifically command the system to do something to it.it will prompt in which drive you wish to install operating system,in that one just select thats it. Quote from: bav_ivek2003 on April 16, 2010, 08:07:27 AM

No, that's not it.
Please just follow the instructions in my post above.Thank you!Sure thing. He may still fail. He has to have the correct XP install disk.
And the Drive has to conform to XP MBR  rules.
He can watch the video of a typical RE INSTALL where there are two partitions, C and D. If his install does not look like the video, he needs to give more info.

Solve : ntfs.sys missing and cd drive access denied?

Answer»

Hi all,
I have a pretty weird PROBLEM.  When I boot up my friends computer, it would say that the ntfs.sys file is MISSING or corrupted and try to use the recovery console from the windows installation CD to restore the file.  This isn't the first time that I have done this, but for some reason, this time, it just wouldn't work.

When I typed in:
copy d:\i386\ntfs.sys c:\windows\system32\drivers

it would output:
access is denied.

I have tried all other letters and i still got the same result.  Is there any way that I can get access to the cd drive?  Although, when I did chkdsk on D:, it says that there was one thing WRONG with it, but the cd is working fine if it was able to read the CD into the recovery console, right?  I just want to get his computer to work because...well i said i will fix it for him.  any advice would be great!
Thanks. It could be that access is denied to c:\Windows\system32\drivers\ - check the attribs and change if necessary. Is this a Sharpie version of an XP CD ? ?ok, I got it working now.  Went and used MAP and got the device letter for my CD drive and successfully copied the file.  it ended up being drive H:!!!!  that was really weird.

Solve : Windows XP restore issues?

As it's a somewhat dated machine the best thing you can do is let it try to finish....
Let it run and be patient.

I guess it's either that or just install XP and then the essential drivers. I did download them from HP's website.

I bought this PC from another person and they said they never did a system restore so they couldn't tell me if it was normal. I'll just do as you said and be patient. It looks like it will take about 5 hours to do a restore. Never had a PC that took nearly that long, but HP puts ALLOT of uneeded garbage in their restore discs. Thanks for your response.I've decided after the restore is done that I'm going to list it on Ebay. That's it for me and HP. Never again.I can't say i blame you.
However once its running you may want to DLoad and run Everest Home and post a system summary log...
Perhaps with not much cabbage being spent you could speed the machine up a bit.

Solve : Unusual problem??

Answer»

I would really appreciate some help with a problem i'm having with my computer. i've tried searching elsewhere but... obviously it hasn't helped  Anyway, for some reason, the background of my computer is appearing 3/4 white. This doesn't seem to affect anything else, windows, icons show correctly. I've tried many things to fix this, but nothing seems to work.Could you post a screen shot ?I discovered i could drag the space around, although it won't allow me to drag the background completely across the screen.
hmm, something else that jumps out at me is the fact that the alpha translucency on your icons  isn't working (notice the blue "borders" around most of your icons) this means that active Desktop is enabled... I think. Might be related.
Right-click the desktop and select "properties"

In the display properties window, choose the "desktop" tab, and click the "Customize Desktop" button, at the bottom.

In the "web" tab, UNCHECK everything in the "web pages" list box.

double check the background setting and make sure it is not a PNG image.

If you can drag it around, can you right-click it and possibly get a menu?just the properties menu, and i've tried unchecking all webpages, to no avail. It does the same with all pictures.Have you tried doing a system restore yet?

What have you tried doing to fix the problem?

Did you install any programs or make any changes right before this started?Unfortunately someone deleted all the old restore points without thinking to make a new ONE, so i can't restore, unless there's some way i don't know about. I've tried quite a few things, including fixing a dll error that was popping up, which didn't help, scanning the computer for errors and VIRUS', and uninstalling a few programs that were new. As to what the computer was doing, or what could have caused it, i have no idea, as the computer is shared and the people who were using it at the time say nothing out of the ordinary happened...  I believe there may have been a crash or freeze and when they rebooted the pc the screen was like that. I've also checked graphics properties, tried adjusting screen size and resolution and things like that (which resulted in the box moving to the center of the screen and becoming unadjustable.) Anything else i've tried i can't REMEMBER, since i've tried so many things at this point. A few months ago i installed uxpatcher, and was using a custom theme, but now it won't work at all, and trying to use it results in the picture changing to black and everything else restoring to windows classic mode. Although this could just be because others, trying to fix it without knowing what they were doing messed with it, thinking it might be the reason the screen was like that. But the custom theme was fine to begin with. Anyway, that's all i've got. i really have no idea.Theme apps play havoc in general with Windows....just the way it is.
Re-boot and switch to classic view and see if it's normal.
If so power down and re-boot and switch back to the FISHER Price theme and see what happens...Nope. didn't work. Have you tried changing th e screen resolution ? ?
Also you didn't mention what it looked like in Classic mode...Yes, it results in the white box moving and becoming undraggable. [It looks like it always does in windows classic, except of course for the box.
Thanks all for the help, it's fixed now! Keep us in suspense..... About the sixth time i unclicked "my homepage" in desktop webpages it finally worked. i was really just trying everything again, so i was very surprised that it worked now.

Solve : HOW TO OPEN CLOSED WINDOW?

Answer»

Hi guys after turning on my computer i see only the BACKGROUND .how can i open my window and use it.thanksAre you saying that the OS shell is been removed or corrupted or infected?

Can you Ctrl+Alt+Del...

Start Task Manager > File > Run

Type: Explorer.exe
and press enter to get it back?

If not, try...

Ctrl+Al+Delete navigate to File -> New Task (Run) -type there "sfc /scannow"
Use your Windows CD if requested to restore files.

or

Try running chkdsk /f if your hard drive has been corrupted.

or

Check this registry key (running REGEDIT) if "explorer.exe" is listed there.(delete if it is there, then REBOOT)
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\explorer.exe]
A nice joke viruses can do easily on Microsoft. Run anti-virus SCANNER afterwards.
1) What happens when you boot to SAFE mode?
2) What led up to this (before the problem appeared did you install new hw or sw? Was there a virus or an error?)?Hi teshe,

If you have trouble bringing up task manager you can also use the Ctrl + Shift + Esc key combination to bring up task manager. As described by Azzaboi, have the applications tab selected, then click on new task and type in explorer.exe then hit enter.

If the problem occurred because of a malware attack an excellent free anti-malware application is Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. A google search will bring up their homepage.hi guys,

Solve : Streaming radio very intermittent?

Answer»
Given: a MEASURED DSL modem speed of 1.2 Mb/s, a 1 Ghz CPU, 512MB SDRAM, 256K L2 Cache, 400 Mhz frontside buss, in a 10 year old Dell 4100 Computer,  and an up to date XP OS.

Problem:  When listening to streaming radio stations with iTunes there are constant interruptions of the 64K or 128K stream.

Questions:  Likely source of problem?  Out of curiosity, stream buffering in such an operation (e.g. Buffer size) is controlled by what? (OS? Application such as iTunes?  Elsewhere?).  I'm assuming actual buffer is allocated from RAM but what sets the size and can that be changed through some option?  Or is the problem unrelated to buffer size?

Note:  Am asking for a friend. I don't have actual access to the machine but would like to advise him on possible cures.Given the speed you have available to you there shouldn't be any problem with streaming audio. Most likely causes in Windows XP are conflicts with different media players. Sometimes there'll be two or more  players that are trying to easier use the audio output device or trying to be the media player of choice.
Here are some things you might try. Boot windows XP up in safe mode with networking. See if that makes an improvement.
Another idea, create a new user profile and log on to the new user. Then try the streaming radio.
Also, disable or remove any type of media players that you are not using or no longer need. This would include trial versions of programs that read and write CD or DVD discs. Some of these have built-in media players that compete with system resources.
Of course the obvious, re install iTunes.

How much RAM do you have and free space  on that HDD ? ?
Have you cleaned out Temporary Internet Files lately ? ?

What WEBSITE is this streaming thru ? ?He is using iTunes to find radio stations who are operating streaming from their own websites, there are hundreds of them.

In my original post I stated he has 512 KB RAM.  I think he has a 20 GB hard DRIVE that is about 50% full, but I'll have to check further for details.

OK.
An iTunes feed may not be the best choice...consider and check if the stations do an alternate feed...

Solve : No sound when try to format email with background music?

Answer»

I use Windows XP Pro SP3 and use Outlook Express 6 to send my emails. Recently I notice that when I try to add some background sound to an EMAIL message, like a happy BIRTHDAY tune in midi FORMAT, there is no sound. I've done the following: Format, Background, Sound, Browse for DESIRED music file in Background Sound box, in Look In box click My Documents and then My Music, then click on desired music file, in Files of type I choose Midi Files, Play Settings 3 times, OK. NO SOUND! Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

jandalWhile in the Background Sound window, did you change the Files of Type to Midi?  If you LEFT it on Audio Files selection, it won't include any Midi choices.

Solve : No actions for USB-plugged in camera?

Answer»

When I plug in my camera to my computer via USB (to get the PICTURES onto the computer), it does the whole AutoPlay thing (scans for types of FILES), and then gives me the list of things Windows can do with the drive.  But this list is empty!  I can't open the drive to view files, I can't run the Scanner and Camera Wizard, I can't fo anything!  Attached is a picture of the dialog actions box.  This camera has worked fine with a computer in the PAST.  The camera is an Olympus and the computer is a Dell Inspiron running Windows XP Home.

-Fleexy

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]See if this works for you - download & run: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/utils/cleanhandlers_2_4.zip

No guarantees, but it won't hurt anythingThanks you very, very much.  It works!Have you tried other USB ports?  Will other USB devices work on the port you normally use for your camera?

Generally, you might have better luck using a USB card reader rather than connect your camera directly to your computer.  If your camera uses xD cards, I suggest this card reader: Olympus USB 2.0 xD-PictureCard Flash Memory Card Reader MAUSB-500 (White)

I have an older Olympus card reader, model MAUSB-200, and it works well for me for the xD cards I use with my Fuji camera.  One advantage of using a card reader is that you never NEED to worry about your camera battery running LOW when you connect your camera to the computer and transfer pictures.  If you're not familiar with card readers, when using one, you remove the memory card from your camera, insert it into your card reader, and then connect the card reader to the USB port on your computer.

Oh, I see Allan's solution worked for you.  Still, I recommend getting a USB card reader. You're very welcome. Glad it worked for you.

Solve : Laptop Mouse freezing?

Answer»

Randomly after every few startups the computer's MOUSE freezes and WONT work until computer is again restarted. sometimes this problem may occur several times even after restart.

ive also noticed that sometimes CPU usage in Task Manager is Low and computer runs smooth. However Other times CPU is at 100%

Im really good at fixing computers however this problem has stunned me as i have done all that i can think off.
+conflicts
+viruses,malware,trojans
+defragmentation
+startup-process

any help?Check this site out:
http://inquirer.philly.com/newsroom/faq/pages/fdb7df9-37.html

Also, I've had that 100% CPU problem before.  Usually it was adware, at least for me, but if you say you ran some checks, it could be a registry error.  Try Glary Utilites, it's free, and run a full-check.  I only suggest it because it helped me with a similar problem.Tried another mouse ? ?thnkz eridani i will try that.

and ive tried using an external mouse however i doesnt make a differenceWhat do you mean by external ? ?
Mice are cheap...buy a new one that plugs in and see... Quote

... the computer's mouse freezes ...
Do you actually mean the touchpad on your laptop?  Is that what your title, "Laptop Mouse freezing", really means?Sorry if I caused confusion . What I meant is the laptops touchpad.
An external mouse is a mouse that you can plug into laptop USB port or pc (same thing as a normal mouse but different purpose)And I tried the program eridani. It did clean up registry but didn't detect any malware, spyware (I used the 30 day trial) plus the problem happens again when I restarted the computer. A little fix I've been using however is to close the laptop and then turn it on from stanby which somereason makes the mouse work, but this doesn't fix the ongoing problem

try re-installing the Touchpad drivers...ive also tried that. it didfix the problem for a couple of hours on reboot, but when i turned the laptop back on a few hours later it was having the same problem.

i know there is no problem with the touchpad as it use to work very well up until now.im gonna upload a trend micro log if anyone can tell me whats wrong with my laptop through itLogfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.3 (BETA)

Solve : Reloading Windows XP?

Answer»

I have a friend who brought his laptop to me, it had Windows XP previously on it. The PROBLEM started with not being able to reboot and KEPT coming up with a error of missing ntldr. I took it and tried to format and reinstall XP on it. First I would GET to the setup screen and try to install over existing partition and it would say that it was corrupted and wouldn't continue. Then we deleted the partition and tried again. This time it would start up only to continually pop up with messages that a file couldn't be installed and the next one and so on. I have tried tons of the things, like your advice to hit repair instead of setup and copy the two i386 ntldr files, which was successful. But then it would turn to saying windows root\system32.hal.dll was not there. Which I then tried the bootcfg advice but there is not list because of the deleting of partitions. Not sure what I need to do, can somebody please help me. I just simply want to erase whatever was there before and put XP back on the COMPUTER. What is it I am doing wrong? I have done hundreds of computers before the same way, just can't figure this one out. P.S. he has two 100gb hard drives in the laptop. What version of XP is this CD and what exactly does it say on the CD itself ? ?It is a CD that was copied and it is Windows XP with SP3Get an original...
That's probably the issue right there.
XP CD cannot simply be copied and be expected to work.Sorry but it's not the problem, I have tried using originals, I have tons. I have also tried using vista (original). Nothing WORKS. The CD I have is a reliable one regardless of it being a copy, I have used it over and over on other computers with no problems whatsoever. I have restored my own computer with it at least 10 times. if this is during setup, and since you're animate that the CD is fine, then the optical drive is the culprit. Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 30, 2010, 01:54:40 PM

Solve : Weird Situation?

Read purple if wall of text is too big.

Maybe it's WEIRD, maybe it isn't, but I came across a situation in which my ps/2 mouse or keyboard fails to WORK at the log-in screen so I can't log into Windows.  I know the keyboard works FINE because during boot I can use the function buttons and navigate around the set-up screen and whatnot.  Not 100% sure about the mouse, but I assume it works since the keyboard does. Are there any solutions to fixing this problem? I'm willing to use any means NECESSARY seeing that I have no personal files on my computer.

Solve : DENY permissions?

Answer»

Hello there.

I would like to forbid a user (LUA account) from disabling my KASPERSKY app (firewall+av) or anything else system IMPORTANT. Should be simple to do even without gpedit.msc or AD, right?

I thought of this:
For every app you don't want this user to be able to stop/modify, change its folder permissions to DENY modify/etc. Maybe also in the registry set some deny's.. and some deny's in the tabs for the services..

How could I best do this?
I'm on XP Pro SP3.Can't you just go to the properties of the Kaspersky file and go to the SECURITY tab to set your permissions?
I thought an LUA account couldn't make CHANGES like that anyway.I don't see any permissions there. I just set a password. That does it too.
I was just interested on how to generally block a LUA from doing any INSTALL changes.
A LUA can do that. What version of Windows are you running?

Windows XP Pro 32 bit 5.1.2600 SP3.Start Here...patio, no offense but you severely underestimate my tech skills.
I'm already savvy in permissions.. =P

What about permissions for services?
Anyway I'll work on it.I'm not offended at all....

And no offence either but someone with savvy skills would be done by now...

If it is a simple document you could just choose landscape page layout with two columns and attend to the page numbers, duplexing etc, manually. If not, there is SOFTWARE such as FINE Print which can process a document of portrait A4 pages into an A5 (folded size) booklet to print on A4 paper.

See attached example Word doc.

MalwareBytes?  Heard of malware, never heard of it as bytes...how can I do that?

MalwareBytes?  Heard of malware, never heard of it as bytes...how can I do that?

Malwarebytes is a program. I imagine it's name is a play on words "malware BITES"Or that malware is MADE up of bytes...

I ran the malware - 29 errors which were fixed, mostly worms and adware.

What to do now?We seem to be going nowhere here.

The solution is simple IMO.  Somehow GET Audigy 2 to be successfully installed so that all the bells and whistles that come with the program are working.

This did not happen when I uninstalled and reinstalled Audigy 2.  Again I ask - is this one of those situations where the hardware needs to be installed AFTER the software installation?

I recall in the past (and I go back to the 70s with computers) that this was true for some system, I forget which.I just need a response so I know whether to drop this inquiry or proceed along a different path. There are a lot of different Audigy 2 cards, they vary according to the model.
You can refer to this page on the Creative site to determine which one you actually have.

Solve : How to create system-level Windows user account??

Answer»

How do you create a Windows user account with SYSTEM-level priveleges (above administrator-level), and why would you want to?Sorry - Windows XP Pro.Why are you asking?
Because people have talked about it, and I'm curious. Obviously, I have no real NEED to know, since I asked why you might want to do this. And just as obviously, it isn't for any nefarious reason, since what we're talking about here is the OS of a single PC (namely, mine), rather than a server or something. Why, is this CLASSIFIED information? In general, this forum does not give out information that might HELP hackers (or more likely, juvenile pranksters). In general, people who should have system level privileges (a) know how to get them (b) why they need them. Thus a little caution should not surprise you. The system "user" can do ANYTHING with the system, and normally the only "user" with that level of privilege is the OS itself. There isn't really any reason for any user to need system privileges in a normally functioning system.
The only thing I can think of off the top of my head that the LocalSystem Account has access to that the standard administrator account does not is being able to read the "System Volume Information" folders. I'm sure there is more. That's all I remember ATM.

Solve : Stuck at Welcome Screen?

Answer»
Read purple if wall of text is too big.

Maybe it's weird, maybe it isn't, but I came across a situation in which my ps/2 mouse or keyboard fails to work at the log-in screen so I can't log into Windows.  I know the keyboard WORKS fine because during boot I can use the function BUTTONS and navigate around the set-up screen and whatnot.  Not 100% sure about the mouse, but I assume it works since the keyboard does. Are there any solutions to fixing this problem? I'm willing to use any means necessary SEEING that I have no personal files on my computer.
It could be an IRQ confict (specially if they are wireless):

I recommend unplugging all over devices, not needed like the printer, scanner, sound, etc. This will ensure it's not conficting against another device.

The PS/2 controller might be turned off or not recognised by Windows:

You could get an adapter plug (PS/2 to USB) and connect it to a USB port instead to see if THATS the problem with the PS/2. Borrow one or another keyboard/mouse which is USB instead to check.

Have you updated your BIOS lately before the issue:

If you are using an ASUS board, downgrade or upgrade the BIOS, there is a version which has a bug with the PS/2. Just go to your motherboard manufacturers website and download a new version for your BIOS, the upgrade it (flash it). You can download from another computer and burn to disc and boot up the troubled computer with it.

Have your computer done window updates before the issue:

The Windows defaults DRIVERS for the keyboard and mouse might be incorrect and uncompatible or it's possible it got corrupted.

If you can get back into Windows, right click on My Computer, choose Properties, then click on the Hardware tab, then click on the Device Manager. It will bring up a list of your devices. One of those devices is the Keyboard. Clicking on the "+" sign beside the word should reveal the type of keyboard XP sees. Right clicking on that specific keyboard will bring up a menu from which you can uninstall the device, just its drivers, see if it can't find new drivers, or ask it to search for a hardware change or simply Properties. Going to Properties, it should tell you what kind of driver had been selected and whether it is having a conflict. Do the same for the mouse. Repair, re-install the correct drivers, or correct.Get a new PS2 keyboard...

Solve : PCI Simple Communication Controller, or missing / corrupt file??

Answer»

Hi,

First, I want to say that I did indeed try to research my problems and symptoms on various FAQ's and forums, but every time some of the symptoms are a bit different. I am familiar with some basic troubleshooting on my computers, but I am by no means knowledgeable enough to figure this out by myself. Everything I know I learned by listening to others, or trying things out by myself. My understanding is basic. I hope my questions do not sound stupid to you, but I am at wits end. I'm writing this from my older Toshiba Satellite Laptop (Win XP). I can bring the 'patient' in to a computer specialist after the weekend, but I would really like to try to figure this out and learn while I am at it.

My PC has been a lot of strange things in succession over the last two days. At this point the only thing that works is BIOS. My USB keyboard does not work in any of the 'black' screens. The keyboard does work fine on the laptop, however, so I know it is not faulty. This computer has from the beginning had a problem with Ps2 keyboards, so all I ever used was the USB. (It beeped at me and wouldn't start up if it had a Ps2 keyboard plugged in.)

I didn't get an error message, so to speak, when it first started doing this. Now, if I start the computer it will start booting up normally, and cycle through some checks, but ends up at a screen that asks to:

'Please select the Operating System to start:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Microsoft Windows XP Setup'

with the Microsoft Windows XP Setup option highlighted, and a three second timer counting down.
But now, with  the keyboard unusable, I end up at a message:

'Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \system 32\hal.dll '

Also, the F8 Function does not seem to work. I can get into the boot menu with F12, but again, I cannot move the selector with the keyboard when I get there. Bios works, but I do not know enough to play with it.

My PC : Antec 450W, Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 300 Gbyte SATA HD, K8 Triton nForce 4SLI, AMD Athlon 64 3700+, EVGA Graphics Acc. GeForce 6600GT, Pioneer DVR-111, 2x OCZ Pc3200 512MB Dual CH.

The computer was bought secondhand, and I wiped everything off it, partitioned the drive, and reinstalled Windows XP about a year ago. It has been working fine. I NEEDED an additional computer to store the large amount of pics my wife has taken. Other than that, all it was used for was the usual things like email, msgr, facebook, etc. All the pics, vids and music are in the large partition, and the OS is on the smaller part. IF i cannot fix the problem I'm having, I might have to wipe the partition and start from scratch...which would be no problem as long as the media files are not affected. But that is plan B.

This is a short summary of what happened just before the PC started acting up. Maybe it helps.

Yesterday, after about two months of not using the PC, I started it and ran Microsoft Updates, and renewed the Trend Micro Internet Security on it. I also connected it to an VDSL router for the first time (it has always been using an Sierra Wireless Aircard to access the web before), and connected to the internet without problems. I also rebooted a couple times for the updates to take effect, all without trouble. So far so good.

It has been a bit sluggish at start-up, so upon counsel from an acquaintance, I used 'Run - ms CONFIG' to disable the extensive list of programs that fired up upon start-up, and then sat on the tray. He had said that that could be done without harming the computer, as all those programs and services can be started manually when needed. However, once I did that, it prompted me to restart the computer because I used the ms config to change the way windows started. When I did that, it booted up alright still, but a window popped up saying that  windows has started in a diagnostic mode, and that I had to restart it after I checked the 'normal start-up' box. When it rebooted this time, things were a bit different. The start up was EXTREMELY slow, meaning it would cycle through the regular boot system checks and stuff, and windows started up fine, but once I got to the log in page, and clicked on my account, my desktop background would show up immediately, but no icons would show up. Only after a few minutes (literally) did they pop up, and the tray started showing some icons too, including Trend Micro. Also, the green 'Start' button was no longer green, but gray and boxy, and in the style of earlier Windows OS. However, albeit slow, all functions worked. I could no longer go online, as there was no connectivity on my LAN, when I tried to repair, it said it couldn't acquire the IP.  I had also uninstalled a 'Venturi' program that was installed when I was still using the aircard, using the Add or Remove Programs feature in Control Panel, just before this started happening. As it was uninstalling, it went to a 'Command-Prompt' type screen, and froze there. I had to reboot. It may or may not be relevant.

Now, not really knowing what the problem was, I thought I would use System Recovery to roll back to just before I uninstalled the Venturi program. It rebooted and came back the same, sluggish way. I tried to roll back more, to just after I updated and installed the Trend Micro Internet Security. After it rebooted it told me that the system recovery was unsuccessful. When I went back to System Recovery, all the recovery points were gone.

I opened my device manager, and saw that the PCI SIMPLE Communications Controller had a yellow question mark on it. I opened its PROPERTIES and it said that the driver was missing. I inserted a utilities disk, and let it search for the driver, but it said that it couldn't find one.  I inserted a Windows XP disc, and wanted to see if there was a repair console on it. There wasn't. I tried to reboot, and this is where I am now.

I realize that some of you reading this will think that I'm a hopeless imbecile, and that I should have found help long before it got this far. You could be right, but honestly, I can't afford to run to a specialist and spend a couple hundred bucks every time some little thing goes wrong. But I may be in over my head this time. Remember, I'm still trying to learn.  Also, I apologize for the random and rambling way this was written. I'm trying to remember the sequence of things as they happened. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much.

My computer has three physical hard drives: I have Windows 7 on "G", and XP on "D" (the other one has no OS installed).  Now, usually, when the computer started up,  I get these options:

Earlier Version of Windows
Windows 7

Inexplicably, the first entry has disappeared, and the second now reads "Windows 7 (Recovered)."  As far as I know no virus or any other spyware has infected my computer.  But I ran a virus scan and a spyware scan of the D drive, and it found nothing.  All the files on D seem to be intact.  I'll reinstall XP if I  have to, but is there any way to get it working again? Thanks.

My PC:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit/ XP SP3
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+
2 GB RAm
If the XP drive is undamaged and bootable, you will be able to use it by selecting it as first boot device in the BIOS. However, why don't you go into boot options in W7 and configure the boot.ini?

You are quite right. Good catch. Boot.ini is used with older Windows OSs.

http://www.ditii.com/2009/01/28/how-to-modify-windows-7-boot-loader/I have been using Windows 7 for 1 month, but I STILL think in XP mode.
Thank you for your responses, but I'm still having some trouble.  The link you gave had me enter the following command in the Prompt:
bcdedit /set {legacy} Description "MICROSOFT Windows XP Home Edition SP3"

I get the following error:
An error occurred while attempting to reference the specified entry. The system cannot find the file specified.

Now I'm assuming that error is referring to the fact that I might have named my XP installation differently.  All the names I tried though return the same error (I don't remember the exact name, but it was similar to the example).  This command is new to me so I don't really know how to use it.  Thanks for any further help.Ok, so I SEEMED to have stumped the best of you.  I decided I'm going to reinstall XP, but now there's a new problem.  I cannot copy over any of my documents; music, pictures, and others.  I always get an access denied error.  I realize this is because of the File Permission security feature on NTFS file systems and multi-booted Windows and the like, but is there any way around it short of hacking?  It's my own stuff...I just wish there was a way to tell Windows that. You need to take ownership of those folders/files: http://www.winxptutor.com/ownership.htm

Solve : Please Help me with this problem!!Desperate!?

Answer»

I Have an All-Fine 7" netbook bought from Ebay on thursday and since FRIDAY it has suddenly stopped working.
Like, I TURN it on, it comes up a loading screen with "press f1 for updates" and when I press it it wants a Password (which I don`t know).
If i don`t press it comes up the start up screen saying initializing...
And after a few seconds the screen just goes a REALLY dark navy blue and freezes.
Any help to make it work or something?I have already tried reset.
PLEEEEEEEAAAAAASSSSSE help!!!!!!!Please someone REPLY!I`m really desperate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  1) Instead of "someone help me" it would be helpful if the subject of your thread related to your problem. It will attract more attention that way.
2) This is a forum not a chat room. You have to wait for someone to respond. Bumping your own thread will not help (and in fact may have the opposite than desired effect).
3) ENOUGH with the colored text please. What OS is it running? Quote from: Allan on April 12, 2010, 02:54:40 PM

Solve : Script error when closing system information (msinfo32.exe).?

Answer»

I repaired xp professional sp2, downloaded sp3, downloaded all updates. when i close down system information (msinfo32.exe) I now get an internet explorer popup stating

"an error has occurred in the script on this page
Line: 60
char: 3
code: 0
url://system/sysinfo/msinfo.htm

also Help and Support Center does not contain any options under" Pick a help topic".

I ran malwarebytes,dr web cruet.superantispyware, spybot search and destroy and found no problems.

I reconfigured script debugging to DISABLE script debugging & debugging other. Unchecked script error notification. I reset security level to default.

I found on microsoft knowledge base KB909889 - "Active controls may not load as expected in internet explorer due to defence in depth changes introduced in cumulative security update 896688 (ms05-052)" It explained exactly the problem i was having. As suggested i added the information to the register. I tried several other suggestions but nothing has solved the problem. Hope you can help.U could also try fixing the present Win. Boot from the Win CD and do like if u were going to a install. DO NOT USE THE REFORMAT OPTION. Just follow instructions and it will get to a fix this install option. Choose this option and like it run. It will take about 30 mins for this fix. It would be great if u could find a Win CD SP3 to preform this fix. if not a SP2 will work. U might have to down load IE 7 again and reinstall it. Write back and let us know?I have ALREADY used the repair option from my Windows XP professional CD disk with sp2. Then i down loaded sp3 and all the updates. I didn't mention i also downloaded explorer IE8. MAYBE i should go back to IE7 and see if that corrects the problem.Yeap, let do that and see WHATS happens.I SWITCHED back to IE7 but it didn,t help. I still get the script error in windows system information and nothing in the left pane in help and support center  so i switched back to IE8.Can you tell us what was wrong to begin with before you fix it the first time?

I was trying to to go to windows update. I kept getting can not display the page. the same with other web sites. I tried a number of fixes nothing worked. Then i did a repair install with my xp professional with sp2 disk and then i could down load sp3 and the updates again. After doing that i started getting this and other problems. In help and support i either the left pane is blank or iif hit has something they don't work. In divice managers trouble shooter i get an activex popup and it won't let me go any further. I hate to dump all these but i am at my wits end.

Solve : Problem (screen?)?

Answer»

Hello

For some time we are having a big problem with our pc. Everything works great, but sometimes:
- the screen turns black (or is turning down by itself)
- the last sound before the screen turns black is repeated constantly
- PC does not shut down by itself, but I have to turn it down with the power-button

The does not happen all the time. But when I start a video game, it doesn't take much time before it happens. We're also having this problem when we're using skype video-chats.

Would you know the solution to my problem?

Thanks a lot!1) Try a different display to see if you have the same problem or
2) Try your display on another system to see if it shuts offThanks

But someone told me it's a problem inside the tower. That I have to clean it up.

Well, I want to do so, but then a second problem comes up: I don't see how I can open the tower. Anyone knows how to open a Packard Bell iXtreme M5720?

1) What if he doesn't have/can't get access to a different display?
2) What if he doesn't have/can't get access to a different system?

Spiny:
2) What does this sound, sound like? Is it a series of sharp, electronical beeps or RATHER Windows sounds (warnings) or the 'pressing a number when numlock is off' sound? Can you describe it more?

Are you on Windows VISTA? What OS are you on?
What videocard do you have?

Please tell.

I have a Packard Bell myself. How I open it is like this: on the back, there are something like 6/8 screws. First, you have to unscrew the ones who are at the side of the ventilation hole panel (in your image, it's the side of the computer which is close to the screen). Then, it has some sort of hooking system, little HOOKS that go into holes. After unscrewing the screws from the side, try unhooking this panel by pulling it straight backward, then up/down. It might take a bit of tampering with it, but it should unhook. It's like a sliding DOOR, but with a hook system.

My suggestion is to try and install the latest drivers for your video card.

Here is a page for iXtreme drivers, depending on what videocard you have:
iXtreme drivers

Scroll down to 'video drivers', click on their title, scroll down, then on the right you see 'download', click it. It takes a while (maybe a minute), because their FTP servers are slow.

Report back to us when you can.

Good luck!

Solve : How do I delete footer on bottom of page printout.??

Answer»

AOL techs had 5 different answers that did not work. The printer company (HP) did not know, (or speak English) Microsoft said it cant be done. This is my last HOPE. It seems there would be any easy way to turn off the footers (reads empty, but still there).
It prints out on both AOL text, emails, & on internet ALONE.     BobPlease try to explain it again. I don't understand.
Start from the beginning of the situation. The date, email address, PAGE no. on the bottom of all printouts shows up, there is a way to delete it, but Microsoft said there is no way,,,,etc. Changed from URL to empty on footer setup, but still appears. After dealing with Aol, Microsoft, & HP, I cant beleive there no one knows how to delete it.If you're talking about websites, use this: http://www.printfriendly.com/print?url=aol.comThanks for the help, but the icon would not move to drag it up like it said, and would not allow me to add it to favorites.Okay.

1) Is this a web browser or email client?
2) What is the website (if you're talking about a website)?
3) What icon do you mean?
4) Favourites?

Please answer those as BEST you can.Have you tried the Print preview window YET > >
If AOL has that setting, it should be under "File" / "Print Setup" in the menu bar.  Look for any reference to headers or footers.  (Internet Explorer and Firefox both have the setting you are looking for in their own print setup windows but since I do not have the AOL browser, I can only guess.)It's the actual website that decides what is displayed on a print preview.
