Solve : XP Boot sequence problems?

Answer»

Recently upgraded MoBo/CPU/PSU/Graphics card everythings works OK but with the following exception.  During boot sequence, just before LOOKING for boot up from HDD the system HOLDS on the following message:-
"Mac address invalid in both CMOS and DMI"
"Press F1 to continue"
On pressing F1 the PC boots as normal and runs OK.  I've itentified the problem to the Hitachi GD 7500 DVD ROM & TEAC CD W45E, set as master/secondary on IDE 2.  Not been able to find any new firmware for these units so STUCK with originals.  By unplugging these items boot sequence runs as normal, no hangs.
MoBo is Asrock K7VT4A+ with the latest BIOS.

Any suggestion WOULD be gratfully recieved.

An aspiring newbie.A search of Google has the following:

Please try to INSTALL your CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, or DVD-RW to primary IDE (IDE1, blue connector) and install your hard drive to secondary IDE channel. If you still encounter problem, please download the tool to rewrite the MAC address from:http://www.asrock.com/support/Download/MAC_tool_dl.htm

BTW, Asrock website is dead.

Solve : program error thing question?

Answer»

what do i do when i have a program that says "program too big to fit in memory" and its an .exe program. i have windows xp just in case u needed to knoMind giving us some more information? Like your hard disk space, and such...

[glb]Flame[/glb]well its not like my memory is low because i have like 20 gb left of space and its basic space is 34 gb so i dont THINK thats the PROBLEM.....also i dont really know what to do about virtual memory and stuff.and i have 256 ram and 1.30 ghz processor speedVirtual memory is hard disk space that Windows uses when physical RAM is over committed. This space is a hidden file called pagefile.sys and is maintained by Windows. When XP is installed, Windows computes the minimum and maximum SIZE of the pagefile based on your physical memory( Min= 1.5 * RAM) (Max = 3 * RAM). Windows uses the pagefile to page programs and data in and out of RAM when need for actual execution.

You can increase your pagefile by going to ControlPanel-->Advanced-->Click on Settings in the PERFORMANCE Area-->Advanced-->Change.

If you haven't run a defrag lately, now would be a good time.  You can also monitor MSCONFIG and see what programs are being started.

defrag didnt work...and what u were talkin about in control panels..."advanced" doesnt exist in their..Sorry for the MISTAKE. It should read:

ControlPanel-->System-->Advanced-->In Performance Area click Settings-->Advanced

You can make the change by hitting Change in the Virtual Memory Area (bottom of screen).

Hope this helps.  What is the exact message thats displayed on your screen?is the exe program ...downloaded from the net?yea downloaded from ares...and the exact message is "program too big to fit memory"....i dk what it is because when ive downloaded exe files like this before on a different computer the same thing happened but i dk what i should do.....should i just delete it?

Perhaps you could have your friend answer some questions for us ......for example ....what operating system are they using ?
do the pages not display at all or display only partially ?

Are any error messages being displayed ?

When was the last time that the pages would open ok ?

Is a Antivirus program being used regularly ?

and the list goes on ......the best way would be for them to come here directly ......

Hope this helps

Solve : Cannot delete Suspicious files?

Answer»

Can anyone help me??  I have a virus on my computer called W32.Qdialer.W.  It causes a text box to be on my computer at all times that cannot be closed (and is always on top).  I have tried Norton, F-prot and other virus scanners.  They all find them, but say they cannot delete them.  I have also turned off my System Resore and ran the scan in DOS, but this will not delete the files either.  Any advice??  This is making me crazy!Cary Hendricks....do your scanners tell you where it is ?
You should also be able to click on the intruder once its identified by say Norton ...and there should be a link to how to remove it ....are you seeing that ?
Let us know

dl65  Hi.  The scanners tell me it is in on my C drive in the Program files.  But I cannot delete it.  Norton did not give me a link to tell me how to delete it.  I am using F-prot now and it says it cannot delete the file.  Is there another anti-virus tool that will work better?Cary Hendricks.... "The scanners tell me it is in on my C drive in the Program files."
Can you see it in the program files ?

Try rebooting into the Safe mode and when you find the file or file FOLDER ...see if you can ...open the folder ...then delete the entries manually one at a time and then delete the folder .

Is your Norton AV upto date as far as the subscription ( expiry date ) and latest updates ?

Which Operating system are you using ?

Let us know

dl65  There might be a patch available for it.
Also, try to run a scan in Safe Mode.
It may be slow, but it's worth it.I am not at my home computer right now to give you all the details.  I will check it out tonight and let you know.  I am on MicroSoft XP operation system.  I have tried to go into Explorer and delete the files.  They go away at first but then come back.  I will post more tonight.  Thanks so much for your help, I am at my wits' END!!  :-/Also, try to cool down... It may be hard, but bashing up the PC won't help!

Aso let your PC cool down. The CPU may be overheated and you should switch it off.

Deleting it after that becomes faster and easier.Try locating the process in the Task Manager. If you can find it, then terminate it immediately.
Then, go to MSCONFIG in the  Start/Run menu on the Windows task bar. Go to the startup items and services to see if you can locate the file (or if using Windows98 or older, look in AUTOEXEC.BAT).
Restart it and check for the process again using Task Manager.Cary Hendricks.....Ok , it has probably PUT an entry ( maybe more in the REGISTRY )....So use the registry search function to find it and then delete it .......
Here's how to use the search feature in registry..

click start /run ......when the run box opens ........type regedit .....and then hit enter ......when the registry editor opens ...click on edit up top .......then select find....when the find what box appears ....type in what your looking for and hit  find next .......let it run .....you can expect either .......registry to open at wherever its made the entry ....( in which case you can delete it ) .....be sure you back up your registry before deleting just in case ........or you will see the message "Finished searching through the registry" that means nothing  was found.  If however something was found ....and you delete it .........go back and repeat your search again.......there may be more than one entry and this will find then ...and again ,delete as before ......and search again until you see the "Finished searching the registry message .....then you know you got them all.

Once again .......remember to backup your registry before you delete anything .........
I repeat this because the registry intimidates people , particularly if you aren't used to working in there .

One more thing you should try ...before you go into the registry......D/L and install and run ......
M/S Antispyware Beta  ......get it at .......  http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

It has a pretty decent registry scanner and it may well clean it out for you ...

Let us know how you make out
dl65  OK.  I ran the MS Antispyware Beta and it deleted some suspicious files.  The textbox went away temporarly, but now is back.  I deleted the file from the registry, but that didn't help.  Maybe that is not where it is??  I don't know!  What else can I do??  Thank you so much for your help! Two to try spysweeper from webroot.com... cws shreeder from intermute.com

Solve : erasing hard drive in DOS?

Answer»

We are trying to erase the hard drive on a Windows ME machine by accessing DOS when booting up.
We then intend to use fdisk command, but we are having TROUBLE FIRST getting to the c:\ and then not understanding the PARTITION steps.format c:   these files will be deleted or lost....is the message from msdos....more info on fdisk here>>http://www.newlogic.co.uk/kbase/fdisk/page1.htmHey Jerry.   If you ever do get into Dos in ME then run format  you should appreciate that you will delete your entire operating system and will be UNABLE to do anything - but I don't THINK you will be able to format the disk while still using it.  Your best bet is to use a bootdisk from Bootdisk.com, get to the A: prompt then run fdisk/format from there then go on to re-install your OS of choice.

Solve : Problem with Taskbar?

Answer»

Windows XP
I just reinstalled XP and installed some drivers that were necessary, now I cannot find my taskbar or start menu button.  They're not in auto-hide.  They just disappeared after PC was restarted.  The only way I can access the start button is by pressing Ctrl and Esc. Does anybody know how to correct this problem?  Thanks.RUN chdsk......or sfc scannow.........in the run BOX...did you! re-install winxp because of trojans/worms!The answer is yes, I had so many intrusions that it was impossible to work.  I've since installed firewall, ANTIVIRUS, SpyBot, Search & Destroy, you name it, I have it.  But I need my taskbar and the menu bar.

I'll proceed with the chdisk and see what HAPPENS.  Any other suggestion, I'll appreciate that!  Thanks. I did the chdsk and the PC cannot find it; the sfc scannow just flashes but I don't see any action.  What's the problem?  Thanks. The command  is: sfc /scannow.When you use the keyboard to activite the start menu, where is it? The start menu could have be relocated to another side of the screen. It's also possible to resize the bar to very small so look out for a thin line around the screen and drag it out. It's possible that your monitor is not set up correctly and the bar is off screen. Using the monitor's buttons, alter the position and size so you are sure the whole screen is vissible. If you have and LCD, they usually have an autoadjust. My taskbar is somewhere at the bottom of the screen but I can't figure out a way to bring it up; however, when I removed the graphics controller the taskbar came right up to where it's supposed to be.  But when I reinstalled the controller again the taskbar disappeared to the bottom of the screen.  I just updated graphics controller driver to see if that will solve the problem but no it didn't.  What do you think could be causing this?screen resolution to low titilucky......By any chance do you have your screen in the full screen mode .........try pressing the F11 key and see if that solves it .

dl65     Changing screen resolution brought my taskbar back, thanks so very much.

Solve : Help with multiboot, please...?

Answer»

I have WinXP Home installed on a 160gig SATA drive. I added a second 160 gig IDE drive in order to install Windows Media Center Edition 2005.  Both installs work just fine, but there's a catch...

In the past when I had set up a multiboot environment with Win98 and XP, I got the option of picking which OS to load at the boot screen.

With my current setup, I do not GET the option to choose at all. The only way I can access the second drive (or switch BACK to the first) is through the BIOS. It works just fine, but is a little more cumbersome than just choosing it from a boot menu.

Even more unusual, when I am in XP, that drive (SATA) shows up as C:, my DVD burner is D:, and the second drive (IDE) shows up as E:.

When I start from the MCE 2005 HD, that drive shows up as C: and the original SATA drive shows up as D:.

I've looked at the boot.ini files on both drives and they are exactly the same, other than the naming of each individual OS.

The second HD (IDE) is hooked up as a SLAVE with my DVD burner acting as the MASTER.

In my BIOS, the SATA drive appears as the secondary IDE master and the IDE drive is primary IDE slave.

How do I set this up so that I can access the multiboot screen right from startup? Additionally, is there any way to have consisten drive letters within each OS?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Solve : ASPI8U2.SYS?

Answer»

When I try to start up my computer it tells me that I am MISSING a system registry file. I believe its ASPI8U2.SYS because a prompt reads ASPI8U2.SYS is not installed or missing(something like that). Ive tried reinstalling the OS but that doesnt work either. Help!  Post here please, you config.sys file. (C:\config.sys)I cant even get the computer to get to my desktop, it stops and says windows protection error restart your computer. If there is another way to see my config file tell me how..thanks :-/You tried to reinstall the OS. You managed it or it stoped before with error? The operating system kit was on an cd or on HARD disk? What windows did you tried to install?when i tried to reinstall the OS (Win 98) with the disk that came with the computer I get a message that says I have a compression program on the computer and setup must close. I thought all computers had compression programs on them, I've never compressed my files though. I appreciate the help. Thanks
It is possible your hard drive is "compressed" ( a setting in Windows 98 used to create the illussion of more space on hdd -- it compresses the files on that partition). I don't know how to help you further... without loosing your data from the harddisk. Sorry... Your windows obviously did not install correct the last time you tried.
im not worried about LOSING the files...if there are any other ideas ID appreciate it, thanksDo you have a boot floppy disk for Windows 98? And a cd with windows98 kit on it? Then, with boot floppy disk format c: and then reinstall windows 98 (be carefull, be sure that floppy disk gives you cd support in DOS to ACCESS the CD).

Solve : SP2 Bluetooth driver needed?

Answer»

Hello!,
I SOMEHOW managed to delete the Bluetooth drivers that shipped with my desktop (WIN XP). It occurred when I tried updating it to support my headset.
Now my system does not detect the USB Bluetooth ADAPTER .
I understand this driver; which consists of Generic Bluetooth Radio and MICROSOFT Bluetooth Radio, came with XP SP2.
I downloaded SP2 and SP3 to reinstall so as to solve the problem. System rejected SP2 saying its an older update but accepted SP3 but problem persists .
Where can I get the original Bluetooth drivers that shipped with XP SP2. I hope to bring the system to its original state (before I tempered with the drivers without backing up ).
Please Help Me I have learned my lesson. Have you seen this Link? What computer desktop model is being referred?

Solve : Jumpy, erratic cursor?

Answer» USING Windows XP on Dell computer, 512 mb RAM.  With no programs running I can occaisionally hear what I think is the hard drive "bogging down" (clicking noises also).  In Task Manager, there appears a sharp spike in performance, and up to 100% of CPU is used BRIEFLY.  The spike is so sharp it's hard to tell what process might be doing this as I can't get the processes tab on the TM open fast enough.  Even if I figured out a likely process, what would the next step be?  When it happens, and sometimes at other times, the cursor jumps to another part of the screen.  It may jump SEVERAL times in one occurence.  Anyone have an idea what's going on?  This happened with old Intellimouse, andwith new Microsoft optical mouse as well.  Both appeared to be in clean condition.FredW......I had a situation a while ago where the mouse pointer  was acting like it had a mind of its own ..........If I had say word open and was doing nothing it would stutter across the page or up the page for no apparent REASON ......Finally I bought a new mouse ......Uninstalled the old one and reinstalled the new one and problem seems to be SOLVED .

The other thing is ...regularly scan for spyware , adware etc ...........

hope this helps you

Solve : Windows XP Crash - system blames Crystal SF driver?

Answer»

I have recently installed Windows XP Professional on my Thinkpad 600x. Everything in the installation went fine, I've installed a small amount of software (Firefox, Photoshop, a couple of audio players, Avast antivirus), and I have dutifully installed all of the updates, including SERVICE Pack 2. Unfortunately, the machine has a TENDENCY to crash during shutdown, which always results in it coming back up and telling me it has "recovered from a serious error". After submitting the reports, it suggests that the problem is due to a missing driver - Crystal SF (WDM) Audio Driver. However, it always fails when I try to install this, RESULTING in the whole sad story starting all over again. I have followed the instructions on the Windows driver help page, most of which involved renaming the catroot2 file, but this did me no good. It's also worth noting that, in addition to failing to install, the driver often gives me an error that says the software "has not passed Windows logo testing".

Can ANYONE help me out here? Is this audio driver really what is causing my machine to crash every time I try to shut it down?

Thanks a lot,
Alex

Solve : ntfs to fat32?

Answer»

how do i convert ntfs to fat32 cause i want to SWITCH to win98.You can use a third party application called PartitionMagic. This program will do a non-destructive conversion.

http://www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic/

You could also bring up your machine with a boot disk:

http://www.bootdisk.com

Run FDISK to DELETE your existing partition and then recreate as FAT32 (ENABLE LARGE disk). Please note that FDISK will destroy any information in the partition.

Hope this helps.

Solve : Skipping like a CD Player??

I have an old, old version of WINDOWS Media Player, 7.1, and have a problem with it.  SEE, during play of MP3 files, sometimes the song "skips" like a CD would if it had a bit of dirt on it or something.  Now, why would it do that?
And, importantly, how can I fix this?
My machine is a Compaq (laptop) Presario running Windows 98 first ed.  While play, I do not disable the screen saver, but the screen saver doesn't come on.  Disabling the screen saver doesn't seem to affect the problem.  Also, at the time, I'm running no other programs (it's almost impossible to multi-task during MP3 playback anyway.)
If anyone can help with this problem, thanks in advance.

A.D.  = LongDistVgerHey it depends on what you are playing did you rip the MP3s from a cd or download them? If they are should we say "Downloads" somtimes they miss small bits of data. i dont really know why this is. must be because they are cheap i dont know. So try to goe other downloads of the MP3s maby at a higher bit rate. CD bit rate it hink is 128 try to get 320 better quality but larger files..................If that doesnt work then try another player try SOMTHING like WinAmp or Real Player or you could just update your old Windows player.
I hope that helps.

RossThese are downloaded files.  They all are complete downloads, I've played them several times and these skips happen with random SONGS and at random points in the playback.  Sometimes they skip, sometimes they play perfectly.  You know, it happens most often towards the end of the song, say about less than half a minute before the end, but again randomly.  I am also not using visualizations, which have slowed down my processor in the past.
Thanks anyway for your post.

Solve : trouble with formating?

Answer»

I got some mad virus's on my pc and cant get rid of them so im going to format the the os hardrive, but i need a bootdisk so i can delete the ntfs partition and then make a new 1,.. and then format the new partion and then install windows, but... my windows version on cd is windows xp pro, i downloaded a bootdisk off the microsoft site and it ISNT working. it comes up with an error ....

C:\DOCUME~1\CHRIS~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.TMP\Makeboot.exe

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\AUTOEXEC.NT.The system file is not suitable for running MS - Dos and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close" to terminate the application.

that comes up with all the bootdisks iv tried so is their any other way of making a bootdisk??!!

thanx for your helpDrGt, using just your Windows XP Pro cd you can erase a partition and recreate it, and also format it. It will be formated automatically if you indicate the destination partition of Windows XP the new created partition. The only condition is to SET the boot order in BIOS correctly (I mean boot from cd should be enabled and also it should ocure before the option to boot from hdd). Tell us if you solved your problem.no im not sure what u mean, im not that great with computers but i did go to the bios and looked for the boot from cd option but it werent on their  Boot SEQUENCE then? First boot device, second boot device? There should be SOMETHING like that, I have seen no BIOS WITHOUT these settings...yeah i can see whta u mean now, the next problem is that the windows pro cd i have is not retail, its a copy and isnt a system boot disc, do u think i cud get the data off the copy'd disk and make a system disc with nero?DrGt........

Solve : XP Startup disk??

Answer»

I installed XP over 98se and have never had a problem until today. I downloaded a driver for an Olympus cardreader. The reader was for 98 so I went to their website and downloaded a driver they said was compatable for XP. Boy were the wrong.  I used the computer yesterday and it WORKED fine and today when I booted up I get the following ERRORS: Windows has detected registry/configuration errors. The following files are missing or corrupt: c :\ himem.sys , c:\dblbuff.sys and c:\ ifshlp It is trying to BOOT in DOS because it takes me to the 98 bootscreen and SAYS to restart in command prompt only and run scanreg. It wont let me do that either because it says that it cannot run in DOS after I use the 98 startup disk to run regedit. Will a XP bootdisk help? If so where can I get one? Any help would be appreciated,. ThanksIf I'm right, the bootdisk is the one that you used to install XP... (The full EDITION)

Solve : video card driver disabled, need help?

Answer»

I disabled both of the video card drivers on my Toshiba laptop, now there is no display at all, after the initial Windows XP splash page.  I can't seem to figure out how to enable them again from the Windows C prompt.  How do I enable atleast one of my video drivers again so that I can see what's on the screen when in the OS?Take a look in the BIOS for integrated video or something like that.Doug Tanner........Can you reboot into safe mode ?
are you able to get into the bios ?

let us know

dl65  I've tried rebooting into safe mode but it still won't bring up a picture.  I can get into the bios but didn't see anything I could do there (not an expert).BTW, I became a member and changed from Doug Tanner to Sprinter1967. sprinter1967...Whats the model number of your laptop ?

dl65  It's a Toshiba Satellite laptop, believe a 1410-S105 or similar.sprinter1967...I have been doing a little checking and this is what I have found.....

you can't disable a video driver other than back to generic vga mode, if no display is comming up while booting you got hit by a virus.

there is a default mode which is 640 x 480 vga and this does not use any video driver EXCEPT the built in driver for xp or windows

the  SOLUTION is to reload the OS.....
( I got this info direct from a reliable scource at Toshiba )

At least thats what it SOUNDS like .

let us know

dl65

dl65,

I appreciate your help on this.  I understand about the possible virus, but it just seems COINCIDENTAL for me to disable the video graphics card, reboot the cpu and have the display not work.  I was afraid that I WOULD need to reload my OS.  Thanks again for checking in to this for me.

Solve : incompatable RPC stub?

Answer»

when trying to uninstall programs I get the message
'error 0x80070725 Incompatable version of the RPC stub'
I have downloaded 2 patches from microsoft, but still no luck. I am running Windows 98se.
Thanks. patrol.......Could you give us a little help here....like what is it your trying to uninstall ?   Do you get the same message when installing as well ?  I think its a problem with a incompatible dll .....

let us KNOW

dl65  Hi dl65,
I have been having a lot of TROUBLE lately, thats why I was asking questions about XP ( thanks for your help ).

Yes,I get the same error when installing as well. I want to install a firewall i was using before, Armornet 2, and I want to remove some other stuff thats ANNOYING me, like a telephone program that keeps poping up.

Another problem that started at the same time is new windows wont open up when I click on a link. This prevents me from using my internet banking. the outline of the window APPEARS but nothing else. I REMOVED the firewall to see if that was the windows problem and then I couldn't get it back on.

Also when I plug in my new digital camera to usb port the computer shuts down with a fatal error.

I dont know if all of this is related.
Thanks again, Patrol

Solve : Strange problem just started with my Outlook Expre?

Answer»

I noticed a COUPLE of days ago that when EVER I click a link in an e-mail, my pc makes a noise, flashes a little, then does nothing. It doesn't take me to the link. It happens with all links in all my e-mails. I have Windows XP Home and use Outlook Express. Is there a setting in the options that may have been changed?Have you been keeping up with your windwos updates? Also, do you have a firewall installed? Get back to us...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Yes and yes.

I just ran an update check again and there are none. I have a trial VERSION of Norton Firewall running. I disabled it and tried my e-mail again and the same thing happens.
I ran Adaware, Spybot, and Norton Antivirus. A few spyware programs were there and I deleted them, but my PROBLEM still persists.RPGr.....If your confident that you are free of viruses and trojans ...I would use your system restore and set it to restore back to several days before you noticed the problem ....

dl65  Do you know HOW to run a system restore?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Yep.....I'll get back with the results.  Restore seemed to do the trick. THANKS guys!!

Well.... I have two words for you... VIRUS & TROJAN  ... Did you have antivirus protection?

[GLB]Flame[/glb]TY for looking at my post.
You say it could be a virus or a trojan? If that is the case, what steps should I take to get rid of the problem? I have run norton and a few adware programs trying to solve the problem but can't get rid of it.  The adware programs are FINDING things and deleteing them. But scaning for viruses comes up empty. What can I  do? Any advise would help a lot.

Solve : asian languages won't install?

Answer»

My son emailed from college that he can't get east asian languages to install on his XP laptop. I'ts a very simple procedure, but when he clicks on OK, NOTHING HAPPENS. I tried it on my XP desktop and it works FINE, the files start installing right away. Then I tried it on my DAUGHTER's XP laptop and encountered the same problem my son has. There's no error message, but no file transfer either. Nothing happens. At Microsoft, they just repeat the simple procedure for installing them, nothing about what happens if they don't. Any suggestions? Thanks. You may need to have support for two-byte CHARACTERS installed before installing Asian languages. Search for this, my Win98SE system did fine accepting Japanese characters...

Solve : maximizing?

Answer»

can someone out there TELL me what to do? my problem is for some strange reason everytime I open the internet my window comes up minimized.  What did I do get this problem and how do I fix it???jorgie.......Are you sure you don't mean its reduced in size...perhaps about 50 % of what it should be ? ....If thats the case simply move your cursor out to the edges and when the cursor changes to a double ended arrow click and DRAG the window out to the size you wish.

Hope this helps

DL65  If you start your browser from a shortcut, make sure the shortcut includes the 'Start maximised' setting checked.

If you have it starting from a desktop EXE (like IE), you MAY need to check the registry or the SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI files for initial screen size and location values for the IE window.

Opening the browser and maximising the window, then closing it and re-opening it, sometimes clears this problem. There may be an OPTION to start maximised in the file or tools menu.

Solve : Disappearing Account?

Answer»

What the heck is going on here? A little background. I set a password on my computer to keep my kids out. Always downloading whatever popped up without EVEN thinking about it, had to put a stop to it. So went to log on this evening as usual, put in my password and get the "can't log you on" message. It SAYS the usual, make sure caps lock isn't on, etc. etc.
After several tries I realise I got a real problem here. Did some research on wifes computer and find out there is no way to get in without password. Fooled around a bit and FINALLY logged on as administrator. Went to computer management and user groups, my regular account is nowhere to be found. Created a new account so I could get on but of course all my personal setting and such are with my regular account which has somehow DISAPPEARED. What happened? Where did my account go? This is just weird, PLEASE help. Can't even access my e-mail of course... sigh.

Okay:( Thanks for the offer:) but I understand Just to be clear. It is not that we do not wish to help however your school would most likely NOT be happy if you did things to their equipment without giving them the notification of the problems with it and allowing their technician to deal with it. So in this instance it probably serves YOU best to MAKE them aware of the problem. Plus hopefully by doing so the technician who will have a far greater advantage by having the computer in front of him be able to asses the problem and correct it quicker than we can with the disadvantage of not having it physically present.truenorth
