Solve : Thinkcentre freezes at "system is starting" "to interrupt normal startup, pre?

Answer»

Hello all, sorry to be such a newbie. I did try to research this but way too many conflicting answers and do not want to make things worse. BOUGHT a PC from eBay and it ran fine. Did not give me any disks with purchase. Put it away as a back up and now will not go past "system is starting" "to interrupt normal startup, press enter" screen. The KEYBOARD num lock will go off if pressed. I tried a different cloned HD and same result. I have a boot disk in CD drive. I can get into BIOS by  holding F1 and changed/saved start sequence to 1- IDE CD   2- IDE HDD   without any success as reboot goes back to same frozen screen.  Any ideas and thank you for your help!http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/force-windows-to-boot-into-safe-mode-without-using-the-f8-key/
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/
Both tutorials also apply to Win7.Thanks Transfusion, I did not explain my PROBLEM in enough detail. I have Windows XP OS and cannot get anywhere other than BIOS. I do not see a saafe mode setting in the BIOS. Is there a way to hit a series of keys to get to the safe mode prompts?
Thanks for your efforts.Oops, I'm sorry for the nonconstructive post above. Probably wasn't thinking clearly at the time, but anyways:
Have you tried resetting your BIOS configuration through the Clear CMOS jumper on your motherboard?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pdp_L5IxaNITransformers, no worries as your help is appreciated and valuable. I tried resetting CMOS jumpers and taking the battery in and out. I have the boot CD in and no luck. I held F1 and got to a different screen where is says press control s to get into config menu. I did that and it comes to a Thinkcentre screen without the phrases "system is starting" "to interrupt normal startup, press enter". It sits there and if I try control alt delete, it beeps twice and takes me back to a Thinkcentre screen now containing the phrases "system is starting" "to interrupt normal startup, press enter". Try enter and nothing happens. Wish I were more adept at so many things...PC's being one of them. So the computer freezes before the OS is loaded, but you are able to get into the BIOS, thus you can't boot from the CD drive. I am afraid it may be a hardware ISSUE...
If you have more than one RAM module, place them individually into each of the RAM slots and see if they will boot. If you have only one RAM module, test it in each of the RAM slots too.
Also, according to this thread, http://www.fixya.com/support/t7983516-desktop_not_booting_past_system about an IBM ThinkCentre A51 having the same issue as yours:

Quote

First unplug your pc for about a minute without doing anything else to it.
Next, without it being plugged in, push and hold the power button, and continue to hold it for 45 seconds.

Next, release the power button, and plug pc back in.
Usually, this will unstick your pc
If both of the above do not resolve the problem, try booting with only the Hard Drive/ CD drive attached to the IDE cable.Transfusion you are bringing life to where it was once dead. I changed the only memory stick to the other slot and it has gotten to where it asked me to choose what to boot from. i chose the boot cd as the clock was ticking and did not know what to do. Panic.... The cd is running now and I hope I can go from here. i do not have any original cd for windows etc. Thanks so much....

UPDATE   Transfusion knows his stuff!!!!    I am back in and running cccleaner and defragger and it is back to life!!!

It is most appreciated Transfusion!!!!Transfusion...but close enuff.... My APOLOGIES to Transfusion.

I guess between excitement and AGE unfortunately, I tend to mess up.

Thanks to all for your willingness to share your knowledge

Solve : boot up problem windows XP?

Answer»

Compaq Presario 1500 notebook

When I boot up:
It goes directly to the boot selection screen ( black screen w/ white font asking to boot in "safe mode", "normal mode", "last correct configuration", etc)

When I chose any option it starts to boot then reverts back to this screen.

I can access the system menu and did try to do a HHD test.  The test failed.

Should and how do I add a partition.  Will this allow me to reinstall windows and retreive existing files.

Thanks

BI can access the system menu and did try to do a HHD test.  The test failed???this concerns me.........have you GOT any recover disks.........if you have load them...Alright.... Here's what I'm not understanding... If you create a new partition, and reinstall Windows.... How will you get your old files back? Two.... It sou ds lie your had disk has failed..... flame,
I had a previous problem with my laptop where it would boot to the "loading your personal settings" box then jump directly to the "savings your personal settings"  box then shut down.  After many hours with dell they instructed me on how to create a partition.  I had 2 operating systems and was able to access the old files.  It was a while ago and do not remember how to do it.  It may not even be applicable here.  Sorry for the confusion.

Any davise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

BHave you cantacted Compaq about this problem? I know that we can help, but it MIGHT be more than just a partition.... Even if.... You shouldn't have to do all this to get a computer to work...

[glb]Flame[/glb]flame,

it is out of warranty.  we would have to pay for phone help.   She had a bunch of PICTURES of her NEPHEW on there.  I didn't want to do a system restore without asking.

Solve : System32 file corrupted?

Answer»

Here is a problem I encountered lately:  SOMEONE CALLED in and said their computer will not boot up and the only thing it  says is system32 error.  They had not used it in the last two weeks and when they went to turn it on it, it had that message.   I was not too sure how to handle this.  It had XP.  I told her to restart it and SEE if it does it again or any options are AVAILABLE, but she said no.  I just told her that her best bet was to get XP install CD and use that to correct the problem.

Any other suggestions or help on this topic would be wonderful.
Thanks to all

Solve : System Config/Start Up question?

Answer»

Hello

I am attaching two SCREEN shots of my SYSTEM Config/Start Up which shows the applications that start up when I log-in to Windows.

My PC is quite slow and I am trying to speed things up, and just wondered which of the programs shown under Start Up don't actually need to be running in the background.

Thanks for any advice.

High1

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]What you really want to do is Google each of those entries and decide for yourself what you want loading with the system. Once you've made that decision, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.Hello Allan

Many thanks for that.

I couldn't install M Lin's programme - problem with Setup, so I have DISABLED the questionable files that run in the back ground in msconfig.

Thanks again for your help.

High1I strongly suggest you do not use MSCONFIG to make permanent change to startup items. MSCONFIG is a diagnostic utility and should only be used as such.

Mike Lin's program does not have to be installed. It is a standalone app and will run when you download it. You can use any number of other similar apps (Startup Organizer, Process Explorer, Win Patrol, etc) QUOTE from: High1 on March 05, 2012, 10:46:13 AM

Never seen an issue with Mike Lin's app on installing...
Runs fine on everything from Win98 thru Win7.

I'll bet if you go to Control Panel you will see a new Icon called Startup...

Solve : Recording sound from youtube videos?

Answer»

I have checked out the INFO you listed on how to record sound from YouTube, and was very interested by this, as it is something I wanted to do.
However, where it says about in the drop-down box CHANGE the default Wave to What U Hear, where is that at, and how do I change it to What U Hear??
I would appreciate any help you can give me on this subject, or would I be better off getting a Digital Dictaphone to record the sound?

Artist66It seems that you're way over complicating this situation. Can't you just use this:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11047/2 03 2012.    I have the same question as artist66 on 6/11/ 2010  but I did not understand reply from Linux711 on 11/11/2010
I think it made the problem more obscure
doowlufUnless there is some aspect of this issue that i am missing there are a number of programs that can do this. WITHOUT going into them all. One i have used successfully (if as stated all that is desired is the audio component of the u-tube presentation) is audacity. When selecting the audio to be recorded to the HDD select "source" and whatever the audio is being played via the computer will be recorded to the HDD. It can then be saved and be available for transcription to whatever the selected MEDIUM thereafter. It also offers manipulation of the sound track within user selected parameters if so desired. I was introduced to this software (free by the way) by another member (BC Programmer) quite some time ago and have used it then and since without any problems. truenorth

Background:-
I started my PC today and started Kazaa ... an error came up telling me that there r some files missing related to kazaa and so i will have to reinstall it.  After about 2 mins, i recieved the same type of error for Noron Internet security.  I uninstalled all of them and when i tried re-installing NAV, i couldnt ... the installation stops in middle and exits with an error message.
Thanx in Advance

Did you try this?ch sajid.......Please tell me that you wiped your hard drive and didn't just install Win XP over ME ...........

Sounds like you didnt ........When will you people learn......oh well.......Here's what to do ........go to another pc ( one that isnt infected ) and D/l stinger and save it to a floppy disk...... http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
Now run this on the infected pc......Warning ......DO NOT CONNECT to the Internet until you have removed the viruses with stinger and then installed your Norton .....
now go on-line and open Norton and get the latest updates .
FYI....the reason you cant install Norton is that the virus is probably preventing you from doing the install.
let us know how you make out .

dl65
www.grisoft.com - free virus scanner.
www.zonelabs.com - free firewall.

Use Stinger first, which is as far as I can tell designed as a last resort for virus-ridden viruses. The AVG scanner (above) is a free full scanner which you can then use as your main one.

Don't ever use Kazaa again. Try Ares http://www.aresgalaxy.org/

Use Firefox as your browser as it is more secure. http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

dl65, why is it not a good idea to install XP over ME? I thought you could get special upgrade editions?hi all many thx for replying ... i have solved the problem and all is working alright now.  yes i upgraded win me to win xp .... dint wiped the hard drive coz i m not much expert in it and also i wanted to try upgrading first to win xp and then see wat happens .... which worked quite good.
NAV was giving error - the page below helped me and i installed NAV after removing it as instructed by

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2004020909040706?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=∏=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl

now only thing that i m looking for is a good music download manager.  kazaa is good but too many threats come with it.  Has Ares got indian music as well Neil? or any other by which indian music can be downloaded

Thanx, SajNeil
"dl65, why is it not a good idea to install XP over ME? I thought you could get special upgrade editions? "

READING .....the problem from .....ch sajid......it sounded like he had ME installed ....was infected by a virus ....couldn't clean it up so installed XP over top ......I didnt see any referance to upgrading from ME to XP ......
My point was and is ....that the best way is to wipe the drive clean and start fresh........upgrades excluded......and even then ...its a good idea to format , then install the previous O/S and then upgrade to the new one ......( all the crap is cleaned out )

cheers

dl65  How is Aresgalaxy watched by government or police? What are the pros and cons for this SOFTWARE? I never heard of it, so precaution is always called.

If some people could give a feedback on this re: experience on this I would be pleased, cause it's been a year now I havent TOUCHED my p2p kazaa even though its working fine, just because of all these stories one gets to hear about the cops catching people for the illegal download of films and mp3.Yes, I did.  Told me to install under Win32 whatever that means!     Going to Computer Commando's suggestion.  Thanks!Ares is basically flying under the radar right now- it works well, though. No spyware, good d/l speeds. It's what I use, that & I2Hub, which is also good.

Please help, im using a compaq computer and have RECENTLY made a partition which i stupidly made as the active partition, this means  that the computer loads straight from this which is empty when it boots up. Is there a way where i can boot up a primary or logical partition so that i can access the partition software and rectify this problem. Any help would B greatly appreciated.you COULD run a REPAIR option from the boot cd . . . .or you could modify the arc path . . . you would find this text file in the start up and recovery tab of the advanced tab of the system icon in the CONTROLL panel.  change the disk # to the appropriate partition. . . 0 counts as a number and I highly recomend a back up before you do this.

Solve : Dimension 8100 pc Need help - won't continue loading up?

Answer»

I would appreciate any advice or suggestions I can get on my PC. It is a Dell 8100 Dimension, about 10 years old, yes I know, a dinosaur, but I am trying to get it to work for my grandson who is now loving with me and doing online schooling. I bough a new sound card for it 'cuz a friend saw the last one that was rusted and said it will never work. My son loaned me a MONITOR and power chord and chord from the monitor to the back of the tower. I have a printer for it and a Logi tech keyboard and a mouse that works. ha  Anyway, When I turn it on, it SOUNDS like it is loading ok and the Dell logo comes on the screen. Then the logo goes away and an error message that says "a disc read error occurred" without the quotes. I am at a loss of what to do and ready to keep hitting the esc button or the F1. lol  Please help anyone.  Thank you so very much.    Do you have the recovery disks that shipped with your computer?
These steps may fix the problem:
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/250364-32-solution-disk-read-error-occurred

I would really suggest installing Windows (or another operating system) from scratch, though, better to start anew than to waste time uninstalling unnecessary programs and fixing the errors that may have accumulated...You could also running a diagnostic on the harddrive.

Run HARD drive diagnostics: tacktech.com
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the PROGRAM, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: imgburn to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba hard drives, see here:

Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here

Solve : Computer will not start-up when I install XP SP3 from Windows Update?

Answer»

Windows tries to start up then A screen flashes real fast (can't tell what it says) then it tries to start up again and I get the screen with options of Start windows normally, last known good configuration, safe MODE ect. It will start up in safe made. Last known good configuration will not start-up.
I can start it in safe mode and use system restore to restore it to XP SP2 and it runs fine.
But I want SP3. What can I do?
Seen this link from MS support? Check also this one for other possible information. If it were me, and I really wanted SP3, I would boot to SP2, backup my files, and do a clean install.  That should take care of it.  Of course, I also like the feel of a freshly installed OS and knowing all my old junk over the YEARS is no longer hiding out and scattered all over my PC. Solve : Using Toshiba laptop needing drivers???

Answer»

I have a Toshiba LAPTOP. I am a bit of a beginner with software/hardware aspects. I need to get some drivers on the laptop that are compatible with XP. I FOUND them at driverturner.com but would like to avoid having to pay for them seeing as they are rather OUTDATED from what I understand and am not sure how well they will work or how long I will wait before upgrading to windows 7. Does anyone know where I can get the drivers for free? The ONLY place to obtain drivers for a laptop is from the website of the laptop manufacturer. Go to the Toshiba website.3rd party Driver sites are innaccurate at best...
Laptops are a bit more finicky when it comes to that so as a rule of thumb Laptop drivers should ALWAYS come directly from the laptop manuf. site...SNAP !MAKE sure also you are using the version of Windows that the laptop was designed for.  I had a heck of a time when I bought my Vista laptop and thought I would be smart and switch everything to XP.  Turns out CERTAIN drivers for a Vista laptop do not have an XP version.  Took a lot of messing around to get that thing working.  However, upgrading from an older version of windows to a newer one isn't as much of a pain.

Solve : 16 bit windows subsystem not suitable... huh????

Hi there... I know next to nothing about computers... There's what I assume to be an error message that keeps popping up on my screen that reads "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows aplications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application." When I hit "close", the message goes away for maybe 10 or 20 seconds, and if I hit "ignore" the same thing happens... this doesn't SEEM to be getting in the way at all... except the error message can't be put into the background... Solve : Stopping in the middle of loading Windows XP to the hard drive I just installed.?

Answer»

Sorry I hate starting a NEW topic, but couldn't find one that fit this.

Last year I tried to reload Windows XP Operating System on my hard drive, and it would only go halfway through the download and stop.

So...someone told me I needed another Hard Drive. So I got another one, used off Ebay and put it in. all by myself I might add

I tried to load Windows XP on it and it would get halfway through it and stop...and not finish. Just like the last one that was in there that worked for over a year before I tried to reload windows.

Now I am completely confused...and ready to just pitch it out the window...

Obviously the hard drive wasn't even the issue...? Since this one is stopping halfway through the loading process also?

Can you send me in the RIGHT direction please and tell me if this is fixable?

Thanks for any help you can send my way!I believe LostCoast nailed it identifying it as a bad optical drive....Have you tried a different XP cd? Quote from: Allan on February 28, 2012, 09:34:34 AM

Personally i'd get a SATA simply cause they're newer and you can get rid of that fat wide ribbon cable...

Solve : CD- ROM Help please !!!?

Answer»

I have win 98 SE.

I went to control panel to remove WMP from my PC and when I restarted the PC, my CD-DVD Rom drive (D drive) and CD-RW drive (E drive) are gone !!! Now if I wanna pop a CD to listen to music, I can't find the D or E drive. I go to "My computer" and there is no CD drive to be found. I went to start, programs, accessores, entertainment, CD-Player and it says "there is no CD-Rom drive attached to this PC". Wha

So how did I lose my D and E drives simply by removing WMP ? BTW the reason why I wanted to remove WMP was because it started acting up ever since I downloaded an update that flashed on my screen when I was playing music. May be that was in fact a virus I downloaded ?

Solve : Can't Open Applications?

Answer»

I am unable to open up the System Restore option in Windows XP.  It opens the window, but it's entirely blank except for the title System Restore in the header bar.  Similar problem is OCCURRING with the SEARCH feature.  Any suggestions?

Would this be related to not being able to open links that don't open in new windows using Internet Explorer?  The problems began at the same time if my memory serves me correctly.  Symantec AntiVirus is not catching any sign of viruses, so I don't know what may have caused the problem...Did you install any new hardware or software right before this happened?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Spybot Search & Destroy and Symantec AntiVirus were both ADDED to my comp right before this happened.   I've delted Spybot after seeing if I could restore anything it removed (unsuccessful at that, though).  Still not working properly. Were you ever able to run a virus scan? Also, who is your computer manufacturer?

[glb]Flame[/glb]The virus scan did not detect anything, and I'm fairly certain that it's newer software.  The manufacturer is Dell.see if this brings it BACK...re-boot pc and hold down the f8 key and chose last good config..

Solve : folder view?

Answer»

I've tried for a long TIME now to get my folder view fixed and no matter how I do it, the setting doesn't hold and is not right the next time I boot.  I've tried the Reset All Folders and then APPLY To All Folders.  No matter the order I do them, the settings don't hold.  I think maybe a long time ago one of my utility programs screwed it up.  Either way, I'm hoping someone out there will know how to get this solved.  I want all my folders to show the details except for a few I keep on the desktop which I want to show the icons.  If I REMEMBER right, I thought the individual folder size was also SAVED, but that doesn't happen either as I always have to re-size them every day.  System specs are attached.  All input is appreciated.

I note that you have tried a fix which seems to have been suggested to do on the site. However while that suggestion did NOT work another below it seems to have worked. Solve : I NEED YOUR HELP!?

Dear Friends,

I am an English teacher and translator in a very poor city in Brazil Northeast. I am married and have three children and a wife to SUPPORT. Right now I am unemployed since I am already 44 years old and by our standards I am old for most of the schools around here.
I don´t have my own computer to do translations and PREPARE my private lessons. I am doing them by handwriting. For me, it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to compete in today´s world without any technology.
I HUMBLY ask you to consider the possibility of helping me getting free spare computer parts so that I can assemble one machine and work to earn my living.
I should also inform you that I am a professional translator. Please, let me know if I can be of any help to you in carrying out translation projects.
Thank you for your attention, and I hope you could help me.

Try hard to explain it more clearly. I sense that you have lost some access to the internet. What if anything can you access? What is your operating system? What is your browser? What type of internet connection are you using? You see i have had to ask you a number of question and all of them should have been provided when you posted your issue. Solve : explorer opens searchscreen?

Answer»

double-clicking on a folder in windows explorer opens a searchscreen instead of the folder
"Search..." is the top option in the right-click MENU of the folders
I don't know how to change this
please help. What happens if you right-click on that folder and hit properties?

[glb]Flame[/glb]then i go to the properties screen
i can't find anything related to this problem in there THOUGH..It sounds like you've changed the DEFAULT action of your folders. Try going into the folder options, the view tab and click reset all folders.

If that doesn't help, try going into file types, look up "file folder". What does it say in opens with? Click edit. Look at the box at the bottem. What entries are there?the first thing didn't help
but the second did somehow, i was able to change the MAIN option into "Open" now the folders open in explorer, but in a new window, even though i configured it in the folder options to open in the same window
we're getting a bit CLOSER though  Start - Run - regsvr32 /i shell32

Solve : Spontaneous shut downs?

Answer»

i hope some one can help me out with this.

i use a toshiba laptop, about 2.5 years old with XP.

It basically shuts down/crashes spontaneously.  I have seen this happen with playing the sims, watching a movie on the dvd player, or playing a flash game on-line.

However there have been times when it shuts down when i have done none of the above.

I hope i put in enough information, and thank you in advance for looking at this.

melhey i have a toshiba M15 S405 with centrino with the same problem.  MINE makes the little high pitched sound when it shuts off.  it seems that when i put pressure on one part of the laptop, it just DIES.  It sounds like a broken solder, but im not sure.Yes could be something broken inside, but my first guess is that something is overheating the processor or some other vital part.
The result is an immediate shutdown of the COMPUTER to prevent permanent damage.

Check if all the fans are properly working. You also might want to try to open the laptop and check for any visible damage inside. Caution is required - if you open the laptop all warranty is gone.
Best would be to go to a professional store to have the problem examined and solved.heh- i feared the "go to a professional" response.

well, thank you for your replies.  Hope the professionals can fix it without too much problem.

melthis question DEPENDS on how the laptop is setup in the bios......power options..and no disrepect...but laptop are not cut out to play GAMES and run dvd disks...power is the key??is this laptop top power options in the control panel set to never.......does this happen if the laptop is connected to the a/c mains adapter??and i would run a bug scan for trojans/spyware /malware /scumware..the list gets longer:(run the best spysweeper..

Solve : How do I merge two drives??

Answer»

My computer came with one hard-drive, but it displays two drives. One is the main one, and the second is a GHOST for back-up. How do I merge the two to create on drive, as I pracitcally do not USE the GHOST drive?

Help?

JackoJacko_the_Wacko......You mean your hard drive has a partition on it .......Are you sure you wish to remove the "Ghost Drive" . It's a image of your main hard drive and it's there in case you have any sort of failure on the main partition .......then all you have to do is restore it using the "Ghost drive "

How large is the hard drive in total and how much is devoted to your main partition .

let us know

dl65  Yup you REALLY need to CONSIDER doing this.

If you do, you have to use PowerQuest Partition Magic to merge the both partitions into one.

Hmm.. seems like SYMANTEC took over PowerQuest. Well its called Norton PartitionMagic now.http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=309000

Solve : two issues?

Answer»

Dell desktop. 1gb RAM, XP, cable modem

I have been unable to use system restore for quite a while now. It will go through the steps and even allow me to select a restore point but after it reboots it says "unable to restore"  No matter how far back I go or how recent it does the same THING.  I checked in "system" FOLDER and the restore feature is turned on.

Issue 2 is video related. Whenever I play a video, regardless the source ie: youtube, facebook link, news from homepage it always stops to buffer. Makes watching on demand kinda frustrating. Never did this before except on a few sites and never with youtube.

any thoughts? As for System Restore, it's a great feature - when it works. Unfortunately there are LOTS of stories about it not WORKING when most needed. That's why I always suggest that EVERYONE should use disk imaging software on a regular basis. Post the full computer model or details and TRY clearing your cache or temporary files. Looks like its an internet connection lag on your part.  What is your ISP subscription speed? Make sure to update also JavaRE and Adobe flash player.Your video problem is PROBABLY due to lack of RAM.  I had a cheap windows XP computer I bought from an auction a few years back for $40.  It would go online fine, but videos would really lag.  Upgraded from 512MB RAM to 1.5GB, and videos were much smoother online.  Your processor might also be holding you back, depending on what it is and how fast it runs. Solve : Computer shuts down.?

Answer»

Hi Guys and Gals. I'm trying to repair a friend's computer running XP Home Edition. He said it was shutting down from time to time and then restarting. He took it to a fly-by-night repair who installed a fan and re-installed the OS even though they didn't have the OS disk. He said they had a Home Edition disk and used the registration codes on the side of the computer. It's still shutting off and re-starting after about 20 mins. I installed SpeedFan and the temps are normal. I ran a Maxtor Disk diagnostic on the harddrive and it came up Ok. I tried doing a repair with my Home Edition with not much luck. It's still shutting down. I'm getting errors that say I should run chkdsk but I've run them about 5 times so far with no improvement. I've re-installed the OS and I've had two shutdowns in about 2 hrs. and it seems to happen when I try to install an AV program. When it reboots I get this message: " The system has recovered from a serious error".  Any suggestions what I can try?Test the memory.

Download the Memtest86 ISO, burn it to a CD, boot from it and let it run overnight.

http://www.memtest86.com/download.html

Download the one that says:
Ver 4.0a - Windows (zip) ISO image for creating bootable CD

If the memory test comes out with no errors, try swapping out the power supply with a known good one.

Let's try that for starters.

-=EDIT=-
Sorry for posting simpleton instructions, SuperDave. I just now realized the first post was yours and I know you're competent.

And +1 to Fed's post below me.Also RIGHT click "My computer">Properties>Advanced>Start up & recovery settings and UNCHECK the Automatic restart on system failure box.

Then you should get a BSOD which may help diagnose the problem.

Edit: You should also try safe mode to see if the problem remains.RAM or Hard Drive problem.
1.  Test RAM with MemTest
2.  Test hard drive with manufacturer's diagnostic software.  http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

BTW, instead of SpeedFan use HWInfo32 or HWInfo64; much better support, even has his own forum.  http://www.hwinfo.com Quote from: Computer_Commando on March 08, 2012, 05:17:54 AM

Try and borrow one of the same or greater wattage to eliminate it as the culprit...Thanks guys. I received this 0X0000001A beginning dump of physical memory. I should have added that an additional 512 mb of memory was installed by fly-by-night. I'm running a memory test now. The PSU is a 500W unit. Only SOMETHING about a memory dump. This is a new install so it shouldn't be a system file problem. However, I did run SFC /scannow. BTW, I've had the memory test on the RAM running for over 5 hrs. so that should eliminate the PSU possibility.Have you swapped in another PSU yet ? ?Is it shutting down or restarting? You've said both in this THREAD. If it's restarting, please do the following:

Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and DOUBLE click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next replyI didn't swap the PSU yet but it's been running for over 7 hrs without re-starting so I don't think that's the cause. Allan, I've already got the BSOD information and I suspect it the RAM. I'm running a test now and I should know in about 5 more hours but all signs point to the RAM being the culprit.Okay.How long does that memtest run? I've had it running for almost 36 hrs. and there's no sign of it stopping.

Solve : loss of drivers?

Answer»

My grandson borrowed my computer (acer aspire 5630) and now my wireless DRIVER has dissapeared.
I have looked at website that say you can download drivers for free but they all want money.
As I am on my pension I cannot afford to start paying for things. What can I do.Please don't pay for drivers. They are developed by the manufacturer and are meant to be free.
http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_5630.html
Here are the drivers for your laptop. Thanks for that help He's made a RIGHT mess. Lost the e-recovery. I think I will have to take it into a shop and get them to bring it back upto date. He's lost Vista and put XP on it.If you have the original discs that shipped with the computer you don't have to bring it to a shop... we can help you. As long as its not a hardware problem it definitely can be solved by yourself.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/install-reinstall-uninstall
I looked around on Google and found out that you can install eManager in Windows and inside there there will be a "Recovery" option.

He's lost Vista and put xp on it.
I can see why he would do that-Vista is poorly optimized for older PCs such as yours, and TENDS to be a RAM hog at times.

What I would do: Backup all of your data onto an external hard drive, get the recovery discs for your computer, and do a complete format of the hard drive and reinstall the Operating System, be it Vista or XP. If it is Vista, follow this guide to speed it up by disabling unnecessary features: www.tweakguides.com/VA_5.html After that, go to the Acer website above and download all the drivers for your PC. Motherboard/Chipset drivers go FIRST.

Solve : xp / vista?

Answer»

In responce to my earlier question about my grandson losing my drivers.
He also lost vista and put xp on.
Is there anyway I can get vista BACK on without having to buy it.
he's left me in a right mess He needs to be taught to respect other people's things...
That being said tell us what PC this is...it may have a hidden RECOVERY partition...

Meantime check the Owners Manual...it may tell you.Well thanks to those of you who have tried to help me.
Looking on the back of the computer there is a serial number
I think this should reinstall vista but how do I do it.
At the moment I have xp on. I want my vista back and the
help page says to get te serial number from the back of the computer.
but I dont KNOW what to do nextThe computer is an Acer ASPIRE 5630it's not neccessary to start NEW Topics each time so i'm moving this in with the others...see if Acer has a recovery CD available through their site.  They should have something you can order for around $20 that will come with the OS and the software set back to factory settings.

Solve : keyboard problem-annoying?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
I have this very peculiar problem with my keyboard--wonder if anyone else has it .
On booting my machine first thing in the morning(I switch off the mains before going to bed), I notice that some keys just won't type, i. e. no impression of the alphabet typed--specifically these pertain to the center row of the keyboard--a,s,d,f etc. After a very short while(usually a minute or so) everything becomes normal and I'm again able to type without any problems whatsoever. The alphabets that usually don't respond in the center row are a,s,d,f,j,k,l,;,'. The alphabets g and h never give any problem as also other keys on the keyboard.  My machine is practically new--bought it just 4 months ago, XP SP1 is the OS. No virus or adware on the system--I run avast 4.5,fully updated; ad aware 1.5 updated and spybot S&D updated daily and my system is apparently totally clean.
I even re loaded keyboard drivers but the problem persists---does any kind soul have a solution to the issue. The problem is just a wee bit annoying SINCE after a short while i can work normally; of greater concern is that some virus or trojan is causing the problem but why after a minute or so everything becomes normal is intriguing. And why just the center row of the keyboard?
Any ideas. Thanks in advance.
vkr15Hmm, two very strange keyboard problems posted very close together. [whistles 'X-Files' theme tune]

I'll maybe help you sleep a bit better if I said that it was unlikely to be a virus of any sort, but short of that I've little else in the way of ideas.

Unfotunately, this sounds more like an actual HARDWARE problem, as opposed to software. But the good news is that the keyboard is often the cheapest bit of kit in a PC! Try replacing it or, if you don't fancy splashing out your hard earned cash, find another PC owning friend and plug the keyboard into their PC. If it doesn't work, the keyboard can be binned.*

But if it does work... well, we'll try and sort something out.

[* Of course, this is no use if you have a laptop, in which case you're kinda screwed for self repair. You'd need to send it back to the manufacturer, but then it should still be in warrenty anyway.]

Good LUCK!$10 to $15 USA gets you a low-end USB or PS/2 PC keyboard. First try another borrowed KB in the machine, and if it does the same thing you may have to change the type (switch from PS/2 to USB or USB to PS/2) to get around a minor hardware glitch. If the borrowed KB works right, you just have an aging KB with bad foils on the PRINTED circuit grid sheets. Replace the errant KB.Thanks Corrosive and Malik--kind of you to respond so promptly.
Yeah one possiblity is that it is a hardware problem(I wish it is)--no sweat as my machine is still under warranty and should be able to get a replacement without any charge.
I've had the same problem to-day -- the center row just would not function(except g and h).  I re installed the keyboard drivers but still no joy. And then  the center row started functioning normallly after about  a minute or so. Thats how I'm able to post this message to the board.
Beats me though, if it is a hardware malfunction why does it not malfunction the rest of the day.
Oh well sometimes one can't explain these things rationally--possibly computer keyboards can be human too.
They call them "intermittent faults" in the tech-support world, and they are hardest to diagnose. But even then, most have a perfectly valid explaination.

My theory on this is that there is a bit of wire or a connection somewhere in your keyboard that is broken by a matter of micrometres. When you just boot up the keyboard, the wires are cold, and so the connection doesn't quite complete, so you don't get the letters.

However, when you leave it for a while, the wires heat up a little (due to the electrons flowing through them) which makes them expand, completing the connection and allowing the keys to function normally...

No, I don't think it's all that likely either... it may pay not to switch the pc of at the mains (quote > I switch off the mains before going to bed)>..use the button on the desktop/tower and the monitor button..every time you turn it off at the mains socket can cause bios coruption!Hi Corrosive,
You were right on the button--it was indeed a hardware problem. The keyboard was replaced by the manufacturer and the new one is working just fine.
Thanks a pile.
In fact I showed the tech support man this thread we're posting on and the needful was done.
Thanks again.

Solve : svchost.exe slowing everything down, high CPU usage?

Answer»

Hi.

My computer has been slowing to a grind the last few days.  The Task Manager is showing that one of the svchost.exe items is using up a very considerable portion of the CPU.  I am able to End the Process, but then it starts up again within a few minutes.  The other odd thing that has been happening is that a few times when I opened Firefox, I get a message saying that Firefox is not my default web browser and would I like to make it my default (even though it already should have been the default).   I have run a virus check with AVG, which has come up empty, and I have also tried rkill and ComboFix to see if they could find anything, which they haven't.  (I have also tried whacking the side of my monitor, which also has not worked... )  At the moment, the computer is running fine, but I don't know what triggers the problem.  I am not sure what to do next to check for the source of the problem.  Any ideas?Hi, I found this link that may help you: How to Fix svchost.exe using 100% CPU / Memory Leak

But before you do that, can you run again some virus scan? This time, use Malwarebytes or SUPERAntiSpyware.Malwarebytes didn't turn anything up.

Looking at the link, it looks a bit old.  Are you sure that's the way to go?If this did not solve your problem, here is what I would do. Download http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653

Open up the program and hover your mouse cursor over the svchost that shows the CPU usage. A little pop-up message will appear under your mouse. It will list the services that are running under that process. List those services here and I might be able to tell you the problem. Here is Process Explorer list before the svchost.exe starts going nuts (not that I'm running a GoToMeeting webinar  and Firefox at this time):

And here's what happens after the problem kicks in (I've ended the webinar but Firefox is still running):

Solve : Partition Managment?

Answer»

Ok is it just me or did Windows have a PARTITION management tool at ONE point?

I thought it was The Computer Management tool but I just launched it today and that sure was not it.

Im not sure what I was on a few months ago when I did access that program but now

I need it to manage a HD from a laptop that Ive hooked up to my computer via a USB adapter that I bought a while back.

Does anyone know what the program is called and its location?

I do know about Easus before anyone suggests that but Id rather avoid installing yet ANOTHER program on my comp especially if the comp already has that program build in.

Thx in ADVANCE...Scratch this topic. I FOUND the program after searching for it.  You can remove it if you wish Admin.

Classic

LOL I did look for it initially but I had to do a more detailed search and pay attention to the specifics in the program.

Solve : setup utility recycles after chkdsk run?

Answer»

I have windows XP and ran the chkdsk program from the c drive properties.  I got through items 1 thru 4 and 10% of item 5.  It was taking forever to complete, so I TURNED off the computer to stop it.  When I tried to re-boot, I got the setup utility and could not get out of that.  No matter which MODE I try, the boot up splash page opens for a few seconds and RETURNS to the setup again.  Round and round, over and over.  I have re-booted several times to no avail.
What did I screw up?

MichaelNo telling - but you cannot interrupt checkdisk without causing major problems.

If you have an XP CD, boot to the recovery console and run chkdsk /r

Let's see what happens after that.

Solve : How to Speed up Windows XP Home Edition?

Answer»

Hi,

I am using XP Home OS, with the maxmum memory of 512MB & 80GB HDD, Can someone help to speed the machine please/ I USE only for email and office documents.

Thanks

SJVExactly what is SLOW? And did you just notice a drop in performance or has it always been this way?

And with 512 Mb ram you won't be getting a speed demon no matter what?Windows XP SP3 with all the latest security updates, antivirus program, etc. will no longer runs acceptably with 512MB of RAM.  You will need more RAM (1GB-2GB) or a new computer.

It's like TRYING to drive the Interstate with a Model-T Ford, i.e., just not enough power to keep up with the flow of traffic.  Take it off the Interstate to untravelled roads & it will probably be acceptable.

Remove your computer from the Internet, uninstall all updates & it will run like it used to.
