Solve : Power Usage, Upgrade wanted.?

Answer»

I would LIKE to know if there is a way to find out exactly how much power from my power supply I am consuming. I want to upgrade my video card but I DONT want to go past my limit which is 350 watts the video card SAYS a 300 watt power supply is the minimum power requirement so finding out what I am currently using would be great to know. Quote

They make power adapters that you can plug RIGHT into the wall and it has a little screen where you can see watts or amps. But, you should do the following.

When upgrading video cards, it always annoys me that the companies use watts. Some power SUPPLIES have a lot of watts, but not enough amps on the +12V rail, so it ends up messing up. What you really should find out is the amps required by the video card (which can be hard) and the amps on your power supply (which you can read right on the side of it (it will say +12V and then how many amps)).Ok tyvm for the input, I will have to check into that.

i have a ibm think centre 2.66 ghz cpu, windows xp sp3 and every TIME that get windows update my cpu runs 100%.Why is this   Here are a couple of "answers" to the QUESTION you have ASKED. One is from Microsoft itself (good LUCK with that one).

Solve : keyboard prob?

Answer»

Hello,
I own an ibm laptop model t20 and for some reason my keyboard is not allowing me to use the letters that share keys with the number pad.  I am able to use the numbers fine. just not the letters.  I am however able to use the letters when I log on using my password.  So it appears as if all the keys work properly...just not in WINDOWS xp.D C......By any chance did you hit the Num Lock key ?

That would do that.......

dl65  Not wonderfully familiar with laptops, but is their a Num-Lock key (or equivalent)? Does toggling it on/off help at all?

Just pray it's not a hardware fault...Simu-post! Computer-HOPE certainly is on the ball today... I did attempt to toggle the numlock button...that SADLY does not change a THING.  What's with the fact that it works in the password screen but after that does not work at all?

anyone have an idea on repair costs for laptops???For the latter question, I sure hope you have a lot of cash to throw away.

Where I work, we cannot open up a laptop to repair it -  due to how a laptop is put together, you need to have one of these space-age anti-dust and anti-static type rooms which would simply cost too much to be practical. We therefore need to send it to the manufacturer.

But to give you a rough idea, most companies charge us £120 just to pick it up. That doesn't include parts and labour. I've found that with some laptops over about 2-3 years old, it's sometimes more viable to get a new laptop than to have something as menial as having a key replaced on the keyboard.

Ouch, huh?

So, enouch about economics - you were probably close to tears at the prices, poor soul. Let's stick to software for now. Have you tried updating the drivers for the keyboard? Have a look in the device manager and you should be able to work it out.You may need to use the 'Fn' key in conjunction with NumLock to switch between the embedded numpad and the main keyboard... Many of my laptop user friends use the external numpad to force the machine to disable embedded numpad.

I never came across a need to whiteroom the entire laptop, only the hard drives... I've fixed several Thinkpads and other laptops by just downloading the service manual so I'd know where all the case screws are and popping the case, then swapping parts out as appropriate. Making two WORKING TP600s out of three dead ones is cool...maybe the shift key is stuck! you can reove the keyboard...rubber pad...check there is no dust stopping the shift key operating!! or just give it a whack on the side..of it...

Solve : WinXP NTLDR is Missing?

Answer»

I've read the help pages on NTLDR is Missing and various commands for the WinXP Recovery Console but have a few specific questions.

First here is what GOT me into this mess.  WinXP SP2 was running okay on SATA 200GB drive "c:" with 100GB of files.  IDE 80GB drive "d" has data only.  I moved 90GB of data from c: to an external firewire drive so that c: only has 10GB.  Defragmented c:  Installed Ghost 2003 and attempted to backup c: to an internal IDE DVD drive.  When Ghost booted to PC DOS, it hung.  Rebooting the PC continued to BRING up PC DOS and when attempting to return to Windows, it didn't WORK and nothing was even displayed on the SCREEN.  (I should have quit at this point , gone to bed, and used a Ghost Recovery/Rescue Disk in the morning!)  I DISCONNECTED the external firewire drive and IDE "d" drive.  Used XP CD to run Recovery Console, (now beyond my knowledge) I entered FIXBOOT with no parameter and rebooted.  PC DOS didn't start, which was good, but NTLDR is Missing msg was displayed.  Using Recovery Console again, I entered FIXMBR (not really sure of the parameter that I used but it wasn't \Device\HardDisk0).  At some point in Recovery Console, I noticed there was a small c: 8MB (I think) or so partition and a 10GB d: partition.  I believe the prompt in Recovery Console is D:\Windows.

I'm a little confused on why there is a c: and d: partition.  I would have only expected a c: partition and a C:\Windows prompt since the SATA c: drive was a single partition in WinXP before my troubles.

Would someone be kind enough to list the Recovery Console commands and parameters needed to restore my stupid/tired entries?  I realize the commands probably involve FIXBOOT, MAP, FIXMBR, BOOTCFG, etc but I'm not sure of all the parameters and order.

A huge thank-you in-advance for any help!

Solve : Error upon saving a file via Windows Update?

Answer»

Within 'Windows Update' there is a driver update which I want to install, because it could stop crashes and blue screens from my PC, which is always concerning the same reason. But during the installation, after a quarter of the process under "install status" (Download status is complete at 2.4MB) the following ERROR occurs:

SAVE ERROR
During save of the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\ReinstallBackups\PCI#VEN_ an error has occured
The system cannot find the file.

So I do cancel and the error comes up: Error during copying. Should the installation continue WITHOUT copying this file?
Because it is an "Intel Corporation display software update" (graphic-card driver Dell Inc.-Video), I decided to cancel the installation not to get the driver any more in a mess and do the full installation properly.
I have tried 'sfc /scannow', because I work with Win2000, but no success.
Ok, it SOUNDS like you have a bigger problem if you get crashes and blue screens. What kind of error messages do they display? How long have they been going on? Do you have a firewall and virus scanner? etcI mainly get the following error message:

*** STOP: 0x0000001E (0xC00..., 0xB7964.., ..., ...)
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
*** Address B7964FC9 BASE at B7960000, DateStamp 00000000 - ialmdnt5.dll

Otherwise this has also occured (happened only once a couple of months ago):
A Hardware driver has damaged the Memorypool.
*** Address 80469A48 base at 80400000, Datestamp 40d1d183 - ntoskrnl.exe

This blue screen comes up 'out of the bush' and only happens now and again (there can be a full week or more inbetween before this happens). It can happen any time, when opening an IE window or opening a file. I have 1.046MB Ram, so memory is enough available. I dont have applications that take up a lot of memory.

I did a virus scan a couple of weeks ago just after this error came up, my system is clean and I use Zonealarm. "sfc /scannow" did not find nor amend anything.

Solve : Win XP install on my Toshiba Laptop?

Answer»

I'm having some serious problems with my laptop.  It is a Toshiba Satellite 5100.

OK...Xp kept crashing, so I re-installed it...except I reinstalled it on another drive..OOPS..  I managed to format that drive but when the computer starts up, it still gives me that screen where you have to select which Windows you would like to use (even though the second one does not exist anymore) - i GUESS that's the minor problem.

Now, I'm trying to reinstall XP....but the installation CD does not start automatically when I reboot.  AND, I can't access BIOS to make sure that it boots from CD first.

I've TRIED to reinstall Windows from Safe Mode but that doesn't work either!   Any suggestions?

What I would really like is to format the C:/ Drive and start over but I can't get to MS-Dos without going through Windows (which doesn't let me format it because I'm using it....)

Does this make any sense??

Thanks for your help!

bios setup keys are Esc/F1 or ESC on boot........to access the bios........When I PRESS ESC (which is the key my manual says to press on startup) it brings me to a black screen that says:  F1 for setup....when I press F1 - it brings me back to the screen where I must select which copy of Windows I WANT to use (with the option of pressing F8 for different startup mode: ie. safe mode...)

Any suggestions???

Thanks
Davesab..................Yes........... ...so whats your question ?
Let us know

dl65  My question is how do I change the boot sequence so it goes to CD first??

Any ideas??

Solve : WINDOWS CAMERA AND SCANNER WIZARD?

Answer»

I've been downloading pics from my digital camera to my PC for YEARS using windows camera and scanner wizard which starts automatically when I PLUG it in. All of a sudden the wizard's disappeared and can't even activate it manually. I've tried system restore but EVERY date I tried came with the result "SYSTEM RESTORE INCOMPLETE".  I switched off SR then back on  but no change. Also photos I've had stored on the PC for years won't copy to a disc. I use the windows "delete browsing history" tool regularly to keep the PC running well - could this have deleted any software? I'm a beginner when it comes to these problems !! I THINK you mean downloading means transferring from camera to PC. FIRST make sure the camera or removable device is present in Windows Explorer. Then follow this link for complete detail : http://tips4pc.com/articles/digital%20camera%20tips/where_is_the_automatic_scanner_a.htm

jason2074: HP Pavilion dv6500 and it came with Vista home pro.

Geek-9pm: thanks for the info trying them out.

Will post back if it works.A LONG time ago I made the statement that :
If a laptop had Vista on it -
You nan not install XP on it.

Of course, many  proved my wrong my citing exceptions.
There is and old adage-
The exception proves the rule.

The point was that some new laptops had never been XP machines. Thus the maker never did a XP driver set for the  model.

If if has Vista, put Vista on it. It is not so bad. You can live with it.
Geek-9pm: went to the website and found this PC.

I found that there are conflicting model numbers on it. TOP right of screen says dv6000. Hp label on back says dv6500 on one part and dv6605ca on another part of the label. tried getting drivers for dc6605ca from the website you attached, but there is only 1 security update one.

HP Wireless Assistant is installed and it says that Wireless LAN is disabled and that i need to go to Windows Device Manager to enable it.
Under network adapters all there is is "1394 Net Adapter" which from googling i have found is firewire.
Is the issue here some place possibly?
I dont have vista so i guess the work of free linux is my NEXT bet. Unbuntu it is. Thanks everyone. Ubuntu 11 should find the wireless.
An alternative is to buy a wireless USB device. These can be used even with laptops the have built-in wireless, provided the built-in is turned off.

For just making a connection to your local wireless router, they work fine, The speed is set by the internet connection. So even a wimpy wireless dongle will do. Unless your ISP gives you 100 Mbps service. Most are below 3 Mbps or less. Even a wimpy dongle does 10 Mbps.
Geek's last post is a very easy and inexpensive solution for enabling a WiFi connection--use that method on one of my laptops all the time. truenorth Quote

Hp label on back says dv6500 on one part and dv6605ca
Download and install SIW then go to system summary to extract the correct information of your HP model. Use another PC to download and copy the program. Have you tried looking in this link?Installing Unbuntu, going to create a home theater PC out of it i think. The dongle thing does sound like an option if Unbuntu doesnt work for me. Thanks for the info jason, I did install and get the correct specs. I have been to that link before and there wasnt really anything there for XP. Thanks a lot everyone.

Now the laptop wont turn on..... back to square one haha.

I think you mean you 'have NOT any replies for this question', if thats the case, its going to be a struggle.

Can you not supply information, for example. You SAY the computer will not start. Does that mean its dead and NOTHING happens (no sounds or lights) or it gets to the loading screen and freezes etc. You need to provide DETAILED information. You post is so vague that members are going to struggle pinpointing what is wrong. It could be a range of things..........here is to clarify once again! is the first time that my computer does not get started with, only stops at that part when it comes out "Microsoft Windows XP" where he plays the tape at all times! not tell me even a kind of error message or errori.nuk can come even in safe mode ... etc.

Solve : How To Re-associate Programs Back To Windows XP Start Menu??

Answer»

I have Windows XP INSTALLED on the C: partition of my hard drive.  When I install programs, I install most of them to the drive's other partition, D:

I upgraded computer hardware to the point that I had to reinstall Windows XP to the c: partition.  (A repair of the current install was not enough to get XP to accept the new motherboard, chipset, etc.)

The PROBLEM is, of course, that now XP doesn't "see" the programs/apps which currently reside in the d: partition.  I know I can reinstall each program, but was wondering if there was a faster / easier / more elegant way to (carefully) edit the registry or somehow cause the new installation of XP to find / RECOGNIZE the d:\program files directory.

I've searched on line, and haven't really found anything.

Thanks for your TIME!You will have to reinstall them.Lie to me, JJ!

I was afraid of that!

Solve : Non-Emulation Booting...??

Answer»

I recently got my hands on a Toshiba Satellite A105-S2716 laptop for free. It had enough problems that I figured I'd try reformatting it on my own. Now, I've never done this before (my first mistake), but I've seen other people do it, and I figured, "How hard can it be?". Plus I've always wanted to learn.

I don't have the original disks, so I did some research, and I learned that a total system wipe is not the only option. I tried what was recommended on Toshiba's website (http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/outFrm.jsp?ofId=AskIris&searchString=PC+Restore&x=0&y=0), to hold 0 (zero) on start up to begin the "recovery process". That didn't work, even after more than a dozen tries. After some more searching I found that a special hidden recovery image can be used to create recovery disks. So I followed the directions (https://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/bulletinDetail.jsp?soid=2753749&pf=true), and made a disk. I say "a disk" because I was only prompted to burn the "System Recovery Media", and one disk was all it took. I was concerned when I noticed that the picture in the directions showed a necessary five disks. Nevertheless, I took comfort in the fact that the directions said that "Some models include the option to create 'Application Disks'". I figured I just had an older model, no biggie. Burn, pop disk in drive and reboot.

From here, after hours of research, I BEGAN to get pretty sloppy.

I found directions for re-installing Windows (http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxphome/sp2installxpcdoldhdd/indexfullpage.htm) and followed them VERY loosely, the main reason being that what my CD did upon reboot looked almost nothing like the directions I was "following". I selected "English" for my language and was given three options:
1. Overwrite Installation
2. Uninstall Express Media Player
3. Delete All Partitions

So I went with "Overwrite installation". The following prompt said, "The installation process will overwrite the partition containing 'Express media player' and remove all data on it. Are you sure you want to proceed?". Sure! Whatever. I just wanted to be on with it already. Installation took no more than a minute. The laptop shut down, and the disk drive popped out. I popped it back in and booted back up, expecting to move on with the process... but instead I found myself looping through the same set of prompts. I glanced at the "directions" and saw something about "deleting partitions", whatever those are, and figured, "Oh! I NEED to delete all partitions!"...

So I did.

Now, I'll admit I'm in way over my head here. I've SINCE come across a Windows XP Home installation disc, but upon start up when it checks for a bootable CD in ATAPI DC-ROM, it says, "Boot CD-ROM Type: CD-ROM/Non Emulation Booting". I have no idea what that means... I have no idea what to do. Did I ruin this computer? I've read all sorts of different things on different forums and the such, and it sounds like I may need to purchase some pricey software. Other things I've read make it sound as though I may just need an older version of Windows, which I WOULD be okay with. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I t

Thank you.Is this a copied CD?

It's a burned iso, admittedly. I would have just purchased the re-install disks from Toshiba, but apparently the laptop is out of date. :/That's your problem.

As long as you have the product key sticker on the computer, it's perfectly legal to borrow a CD to install. It has to be the same version. If you have a key for XP home edition, you have to use a home edition disk etc...

If you can't find one to borrow, you could install a free operating system, like linux.Ah, I didn't know I needed the right version. I just know it was some variant of XP.

I don't know MUCH about Linux, but if it's free, I may give it a shot. I hear good things about Ubunto too. Can I download and burn those? And will they boot? lol Yes. Go here and click on the "show me how" next to each step.

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download

Although, you might want to try asking around to see if anyone you know has an XP install disk you could use.I'll do that. I wasted probably 12 blank disks trying to properly burn a bootable iso... Asking around sounds so much easier lol

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it

And now that it's four in the morning, I'm going to bed. Cheers.

John My apologies to all (on my very first posting to this forum!) - I didn't notice the ridicualous subject I had, inadvertently, typed - I was too busy making certain that my wording and spelling was correct in the body of the message!

I think Imust be clicking too quick because the next thing I Know, the prgram is copying these same files or folders, which is the last thing I want.
What program? Are you using hold ctrl + left click on mouse or can you describe more clearly next time? Sorry, I should have giving more information.

It happens when using Windows Explorer and I'm selecting files or folders prior to deleting them, copying them, or just checking their total size before , perhaps, zipping them up together.

I've just checked and it happens when holding down the "Ctrl" key and selecting individual files or folders or holding down the "Shift" key and selecting a mixed group.

I click merrily  away and then, suddenly, up comes a dialogue box to tell me that it's copying all those that I have selected so far, which is a right pain.

I, then, end up with having to delete all the copies before I do whatever I wanted with the originals.

It doesn't seem to happen if and when I take more time between clicking the mouse to select the items.

I hope the subject line makes more sense!

These are and should be seperate operations...
It's still unclear as to what you want ot do...other than slow down the mouse as you cannot do all of these tasks at once...Really and truly it sounds to me like your (right click option) task pop up on there own and with your fast clicking it click on the closest option to your pointer which may be copy.

I would say check you options and make sure that those options dont automatically pop up after a few seconds which inadvertently has you clicking them.

Or with your super fast clicking you are hitting the right button your self bringing those options up. Either way Id say you need to slow down, that much clicking isnt good your wearing out your mouse faster and your comp probly hates you lol.You are dragging the selected items. dragging a selection of files any distance and dropping them into the same folder will copy them.

basically you are holding the button down too long and moving the mouse while you are clicking, so it get's interpreted as a drag operation into the same folder.

The menu that appears when right clicking is positioned according to the pointer location. the Cut/Copy/Paste items are around the center of the menu, so they will never be the closest option. Also, they would have clearly seen the menu appear, even briefly. Also, the fact that copying in and of itself doesn't do anything to the files except add them to the clipboard to be pasted, and their problem is the files start being copied leaves my explanation (inadvertent drag) as the only plausible one.

That, BC_Programmer, is exactly what I am doing and I know I'm doing it - when selecting individual files to delete, you have to hold down the "Ctrl" key, and move the mouse pointer from one to another file --- but I'm holding the mouse button down that bit too long as I move the pointer from one to the next and it's being interpreted as a "copy" signal.

Similarly, when selecting a block of files to delete, you have to hold down the "Shift" key and then I drag the mouse pointer down the list  instead of just selecting the first and last files.

I don't right-click during this process - just hold down the "Ctrl" or the "Shift" key and move the mouse down the lis and, I, sure, dragging the pointer down. It's not a major problem but is an irritation.

I could slow down and carry out the operation slowly and correctly but I prefer to turn off (if possible) this copy action, as I never use it to copy files.

Thanks to all for your replies.
Shift + down arrow will do the sma thing to create the block of files...
Then as BC suggested try using the right clik menu for the remainder of the operation.So.. err.. if I understand correctly, your issue is that it doesn't work as designed when you don't use it as it was designed to be used?

No BC_Programmer,  you, quite obviously, do NOT understand correctly - in fact you do not undersatnd at all.

It works as it it is supposed to but I want to know if it is possible to turn it off - it, really, is that simple.

It's, obviously, an inherent shortcut method of copying files and folders but I don't need it, nor do I want it.

I was hoping for help and not sarcasm - please do not treat me as a child - I have treated you with respect and I, and the others on the forum, EXPECT the same in return. You may have thought that your remark was smart but, I assure you, it wasn't.

It's a pity because I had just joined the forum but I can see that this is not the forum for me. I do thank, however, all those who really tried to help me.

Do NOT bother, BC_Programmer, to reply as I will not be back.

I'm afraid BC_Programmer is right and your PENCHANT for not wanting to understand his indirect advice speaks for itself. I would not put my hand in a fire then wonder why i keep getting burned.

You are NOT using the left and right click option as they were designed. You need to re-think the way you handle the mouse.

It a shame people come to forums only to expect a certain answer and when that answer doesn't come, they get grumpy. Do you think any other forum would have given a different answer, because the fact remains that you are still using the mouse incorrectly.

You cant configure the mouse in Windows, you might be able to if you changed some registry setting, but i would not advise it......... Quote from: John Veness on March 23, 2012, 09:03:57 AM

It's a shame you aren't coming back then, because I know exactly how to turn it off.(at least for XP, doesn't seem to work for vista/7) And I wasn't being sarcastic. However for your benefit I will probably load this particular post with it. I was pointing out that the way you were using the system was in a way that it simply wasn't designed for, not even, in large part, with options. I don't even know if disabling drag and drop would solve your "problem" anyway, since the problem is essentially that "you are doing it wrong" and you want that wrong way to be interpreted by the system in some specific way, or, rather, you want to be able to do it a wrong way and allow those wrong way actions to not be interpreted as they are designed (you want to be able to hold the button while moving the mouse on an item, and not start a drag operation). Of course there are options to disable some portions entirely, but I suspect that may be more ANNOYING for other operations you might perform.

Anyway, in case somebody else has this issue, you can disable Drag And Drop Entirely in Windows Explorer. NATURALLY a side effect is that it disables all drag and drop, not just "accidental" dragging and dropping that is actually on purpose because you are using the mouse in an atypical fashion.

Also, I'm not 100% on what windows systems this will work on, but as far as I can see you didn't state your OS(I may have missed that, didn't re-read the thread), and, again, since you don't plan to return I don't see the point in customizing the advice to your scenario anymore. Perhaps it will help somebody else, though. Doesn't seem to work on Vista/7 to change anything, but I think it would work on XP and 2000.

1. Run mmc. Either start-Run, or Windows key+R and enter "mmc". I believe you can use start-Search on vista/7 to open it as well.
2. on the file menu of the Management console, choose "Add/Remove snap-ins".
3. Find "Group Policy" or Local Group Policy" or something to that effect. It seems to differ on different systems. Click Add, and then click finish. Click Close and click OK on the dialogs to return to the main mmc program.
4.Choose "Local Security Policy" in the tree on the left hand side. Expand the tree to follow this "path":
User Configuration->Windows Settings->Internet Explorer Maintenance
then click the "security" object.
5. on the right pane, double-click security zones and content ratings.
6. under security zones, select the "Import the current security zones" settings checkbox, and then click the modify settings button.
7. in the "Select a web content zone to specify it's security settings" section, click My Computer, and then click Custom Level in the Security Level for this zome section.
8.In the security settings section, scroll to the Downloads section and change the option from Disabled to Enabled under File download.
11. Under the miscellaneous section, under the Drag and drop or copy and paste files option, disable the option.

Close MMC.

Another method could be to increase the drag window, if you are "holding the button a bit too long" instead of simply not holding the button down too long (the horrors) one could increase the drag window so that a drag operation doesn't start until the mouse is moved a bit farther. Hopefully by that time you've released the button.

I will leave looking up how to change it as an exercise, because I just spent the last hour fighting with a poor signal Wifi just to find the aforementioned information to disable drag and drop. I believe tweakUI allows you to change it on XP, though I don't think that works on Vista/7. And I don't know the registry options off-hand and I doubt knowing the parameters to call SetSystemParametersInfo() with would help your average user.

Solve : Curppted Windows File?

Answer»

I tried to start xp an came acrossed this on my screen. Windows could not start because the file \\windows\\system32\\config\\system is curppted or missing. Do a repair .....

So I put in the XP disk an hit R hit enter an still comes up with the error. I repaired it like four or five times too see the same message.  I figured whats the differnce between one system file an another? Other then its needed too start XP. I coppied the file from another machine an virtually replaced it on the currpted one. Know Im getting this stop 0x0000007B

You are not booting to the cd. And copying the REGISTRY file from one system to another has now screwed your system completely. EITHER revert to an earlier registry with system restore or format and reinstall. So I can get it too safe mode an do that then  Try this:

Boot to the XP CD and select R (Recovery Console)

At the command prompt type:

ren c:\windows\system32\config\system system.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config

RebootI'll let you know here, Thursday how it worked.  At my college campus till late tonight. Quote from: Allan on March 27, 2012, 10:32:57 AM

Solve : BSODs while trying to install windows XP SP3?

Answer»

Hi ,

My PC is going crazy ... I am trying to install windows XP SP3 , and everytime I get a blue screen of death or an error , examples of their messages are :

PFN_LIST_CORRUPT
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Also, once I got an error during installation "rundll32.exe entry point not found " .

I need to know if these errors and BSODs are due to faulty hardware , or what ? if yes , what is it , HD or RAM or what ? BTW the HD is new .

Any advice is highly appreciated . Thanks a lot .Please provide more details about your computer, Make MODEL, type.

Do you have another CD that will boot your computer? For example, one of the many Linux 'Live' CDs that run without a hard drive install.

The install CD may have been damaged. However hardware issues may do this. The RAM may be failing. Or it could be a weak POWER supply unit.

In some cases DUST or dirt inside the CD  reader prevents it from reading some parts of the CD. Blow out all the dust with low-pressure air.

How old is the PC? A bad CMOS battery can cause strange things to happen.Hi Geek-9pm,

It's an assembled PC , Intel Processor Pentium D , core 2 Duo , 4 MB cache , 4 GB RAM , Gigabyte MB , It's as old as 2006  . I had mandriva linux installed , it worked fine but also sometimes it gives a QUICK message that disappears before i finish reading it about fatal error in CD module . Well , about the dust , that reminds me ,  I did blow the dust using blower , before that , the PC would shutdown by itself frequently either during installation or even on Mandriva ... does this ring any bell ?

Yeah. A PC built six years ago may have a lot of dust. To really make sure, you have to check under the motherboard also.

Dust in the Power supply can make if overheat and either turn off or become unstable and make you think something else is wrong.

What I mean is that when the 5 volt and 12 volt lines drop down the drives become less reliable . Also, some digital chips will flop when they should have flipped.

Dusting a PSU is a real chore, You may have to remove it from the computer case so you can open the PSU box and blow it out.

And check the CMOS battery. And try another CD drive.thanks , i will try that and let you know Reinstall the drive with a single RAM module, as one may be faulty and or try another PSU of same or equal wattage. Quote

try another PSU of same or equal wattage.

Got a chucle out of this one.....

Solve : Computer locks up, CPU at 100%?

Answer»

I'm trying to get some music out of Itunes to put on my wife's laptop, from her desktop. Most programs run OK, but if too many are open or if I go to Itunes, it freezes up. I went to task manager and it showed CPU at 100%. Even if I start with itunes only it locks up. How can I get around this? I've done the basic cleaning with CC Cleaner, defragged, etc. Do I have to go under add/remove programs and just clear some things out? The computer is getting old and is getting slow. Can't remember how full the HD is. That's why she switched to the laptop, just want to get her music over there. What is the ACTUAL method of doing the "transfer " you are attempting for these files? truenorthI was going to copy songs to a jumpdrive and transfer. But itunes freezes up right away. There is 5GB left on a 75GB hard drive, so I guess I'll have to remove some programs. Not sure which ones should go. So it would appear that all you are trying to do in the transfer is with the i-tunes window open and the flash drive window open as well you are dragging and dropping them from one open window to the other.Correct? While you certainly are very low on available HDD space that fact should be AFFECTING more than just this process. If those programs/files whatever that have filled your HDD are things that you don't want to lose then i suggest another HDD (my preference would be external-but if space is available internal). However if your having problems when you try to transfer files now then that could be a problem when you want to transfer stuff to another HDD as well. When you do the i-tunes (try) transfers to the flash drive are you doing them one song at a time or a bunch? It just occurred to me (though i have transferred songs from i-tunes to a portable Mp3 player a long time ago) is it possible that i-tunes library (APPLE) LIMITS transfers to an Apple device? Some other member that uses i-tunes more than i do may wish to input on that aspect. Can you transfer other files particularly audio or video files currently to an external device?truenorthThe main issue is the lack of Free space on that HDD...Windows by nature needs some breathing space even for copying /moving files...

Some serious housekeeping is in order...
In the meantime you can try to copy/move the INFO in smaller increments.

Solve : Need help using Recovery Console for a system repair?

Answer»

Hi everyone !

This is an HP Compaq DC7100SFF Desktop with Windows XP Professional SP3.
Windows won't load. There is a BLACK screen with a white blinking cursor, just after the BIOS screen.

I tried to insert the Windows CD, and wanted to do a Repair Install instead of doing a Fresh install. But I don't have this option. I have only the option of installing an additional installation in the same partition, or deleting the partition.
If you go to the page 6 of this tutorial, you'll see the step that I'm talking about: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/instxprepair1_6.htm

So, I ran the Recovery Console with SETUP.
But I'm not familiar with the Recovery Console, and my question is: is it possible to repair the Windows Installation using the recovery console ?
How to do it?

I don't want to loose the Data or all the software installed...

Thank you for your help ! Best Repair Install Info out there...Thank you!
I take a look at it right now !
Its best to back-up all documents first by connecting the HARD drive on a working computer as a safety procedure. He kinda mentions that in the Tutorial...a few times.I would suggest to install the hard drive to another PC save all data then reinstall windows Yes, true
I already saved all the data.

By the way... I saved all documents.
But is there a way to backup softwares? and then transfer them ? (Without having them reinstalled, if I don't have the CDs anymore?)
After googling, I found some softwares that says "Transfer Data and Software to a new PC for only 9.99$, or 20$... etc" but after reading the fine print, they all mention that you can save your music, pictures, videos, documents... etc but never mention programs, or softwares.Programs will need to be re-installed...this is by design.

None of the apps i ever tested that say they can do this ever worked very well... Quote from: cwcomputerconnections on March 20, 2012, 10:23:53 PM

I would suggest to install the hard drive to another PC save all data then reinstall windows
why not go to SAFE mode and then transfer all the data to usb? but if the window wont load in this computer (because of system crash), even though you move the hard drive another working computer, you still cannot start the window right? It doesn't detect any Windows install.
So even Safe mode cannot load.
It's like an empty HDD.

I tried to fix the Boot.ini ... but I couldn't fix it. Maybe I didn't do it right?

Because the windows Setup doesn't detect a windows install, that's why I couldn't have the option to do a Repair Install.
Then follow this Guide to get any data off the drive you need...
Here...

Then format the drive and do a clean install of XP...
Clean Install of XP...So, the only choice I have, is to do a new install of windows?I used Hiren Boot CD
And when I run Mini Windows XP, I can access the HDD, and navigate in all folders (I have access to Documents and everything)

But except for the documents, and pictures... can I transfer softwares in the new install ? (Some softwares, I can't reinstall then as I don't have the CDs, or Serial Keys)I also ran a CheckDisk with mini XP.
I accessed my HDD using Mini XP
located the file "boot.ini" which is located in the C: location
And opened it.

Deleted the Boot that I created using the recovery console (bootcfg /rebuild)
and edited it manually as follow:

[boot LOADER]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

when I tried "Bootcfg /rebuild" given in this link : http://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2007/04/23/how-to-slave-hard-drive/
It didn't solve the problem! I don't understand why...

So, after editing the boot.ini manually, and restarted the computer (without CDs)
same issue... only a black screen with a white blinking cursor.
I restarted the computer with the Windows XP Professional CD.
Went in Setup, and now Setup recognize a Windows Install! (at least solved that)

So I have the option the either repair the windows already installed, or do a fresh install.

I pressed R, for a repair install
Setup started deleting some sys files... etc, and copying some others... etc
and then the computer restarted itself after the 100% was complete.
Normally, after the computer restarts, windows goes on the WINDOWS Install (where you can see 35min left, and it installs everything...)
But windows won't load!
It freezes in PRESS ANY KEY TO BOOT FROM CD..... (it doesn't skip that part, to go on Windows Install)
and if I remove the Windows CD, I have only a black screen, and a white blinking cursor!

Tried again Windows Setup... and Repair install. And I had a message "Windows Setup already tried to upgrade Windows, but failed. would you like to try again?"

Second time... same result!

Any idea ?

Do I have to reinstall a fresh install?
I know it would be easier... but I can't reinstall some softwares and programs, as I don't have the CDs, or the serial keys.
If you know how to transfer Softwares, I'm ok with it...

if not... does anyone have an idea on how to get this Windows running ?

I had to REINSTALL windows xp several times and now I've GOT about 8 folders with different names in my c/documents and settings all with basically the same files within. when I try to delete all but one I get an error that says this is a windows system FOLDER and is required for windows to run properly it cannot be deleted. NOTE: I did manage to delete a few but two are still there with the same files within. The name and location of the folders? Quote

I had to reinstall windows xp several times
Why? Was the issue resolved? Did you backup user documents?c:/Documents and settings C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS and C:\Documents and Settings\username. These folders contain the same file types. I got rid of about 6 already with different names that let me delete that also pretty much had the same files.
#1-C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application DATA
#2-C:\Documents and Settings\usernameApplication Data\ElevatedDiagnostics
#3-C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Identities
#4-C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\PC Unleashed Online
etc: - \Application Data\DriverCure and several others - 17 folders...Then this one...

#1-C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Application Data
#2-C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\username
#3-C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Start Menu
1) Leave them alone
2) For your protection I've edited your post and removed your username, replacing it with the generic "username".

Solve : Xp won't finish loading...?

Answer»

My computer stops loading XP when it reaches the desktop. The icons show, but many are only the default icon. The task bar that I have hidden is now always visible, but the icons that are normally on it, are gone. The mouse cursor moves and the keyboard LIGHTS up, but they do not function. I cannot select anything. I can't get into safe mode. Several years ago, just after I bought this, the ps2 port in the back shorted out and I had to use a USB keyboard and mouse. Unfortunately, the keyboard won't turn on until after the welcome screen. The boot disk a friend made for me at that time, does nothing, and the original XP disk has disappeared. Frankly, I don't even know how to solve this. I believe I once downloaded info on how to get into safe mode without the F8 key, but of course, it is on this computer and I can't access it.
A friend has given me his old machine, an HP, to use after he won a brand new one in a raffle. It is a few years old but is much more powerful and faster then my old one. I was about to start transferring tons of old files to the new one, when this happened.
I planned to use it as a library for my 'stuff'. Do you think it sensed it was about to be relegated to a backup and got PO'd at me?
Anyway, any help will be greatly appreciated and I will respond to any questions a.s.a.p.

Running all of the above at the same time can cause conflicts.

What happens when you boot in safe mode?
This is very puzzling, after several days and a hundred attempts, it finally FINISHED loading! Just before I posted the problem here, I tried one more time and it refused to load, so I just left it. A few hours later, I came home to find it had loaded completely. Many times since the trouble started, I had left it running even longer, but to no avail. I'm almost afraid to turn it off now. I will start moving files immediately, just in case, but I am still puzzled. I did notice one thing when I started to use it again. It was VERY slow. After a half an hour it seems much faster. I would appreciate some THOUGHTS on this. Can I ever trust it again?Sure. I will recommend you get a new hard drive.Like the one you have so that it can be used as a replacement.
Having a spare HDD is a good investment. You can also use it for backups. Much faster that using DVDs for backup.

Segregate and other makers provide free software to 'clone' your current OS onto the new drive.

Even Western Digital has a free version of a POPULAR 'clone program for use on their hard drive products. Acronis True Image WD Edition and other tools

If you live in an area where computer hardware is not available, you could consider buying from an on-line vendor in hour country or in some location that can export to where your live.

You did not say what size Hard drive you now have.
The symptoms are classic for a weak hard drive. XP will attempt to recover bad reads from the HDD and correct the errors. That can take a long time.
Hi, sorry that I forgot to thank you for your first reply. About a year ago, I replaced the original 40 Gig drive with a Western Digital 320 Gig drive. I cloned it with their software. Since then, I have had no problem until this. I run all the anti-whatever software once a week religiously and ran them again last night. They only reported the typical adware stuff. Avast says my system is still secure, so I ran out of ideas as to what may be the problem. If you have any preferences for the anti-whatever software, I would like to know. I need to put some on the new computer. Again, thanks for your response. The Mal Ware experts say that you should not run more that one AV at a time. Mal ware bytes is the exception, you run it on demand. So, that one mean just one AV active and Malwarebytes installed but not running.

My recommendation about a second drive still holds, bu your don't need 320 GB unless you really have a lot of stuff.

Most likley your system is under 50 GB if you could mire all of My Documents into another partition. After that, your used space found on  the boot partition should come way down. The theory is that it becomes quicker  to check, repair and fragment a partition is it has less stuff on nit, even when there is lots of space. That is not just my pinion, others believe that also. Can't  prove it.
Here is a link to the free backup software from WD.
Oh, sorry I already did that. See above, my second  post.

You could buy a spare drive with maybe n120 to 160 GB and that should be enough for backup.

I believe you are right. I don't know what all those tools do. If he has just one AV, then the rest are fine.

He can run tests to to see if the drive has problems.

Solve : Shrunk?

Answer» EVERYTHING suddenly shrunk to a very small size and when I tried to change the font & reboot pc NOTHING happenedAre you talking about the desktop or the browser or everything? Are you talking about just fonts or icons or everything? What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, ERROR, etc)?

Please provide some information so we can try to help you.I'm talking about everything. When I logged into internet explorer everything was shrunk down to an unreadable size. The entire browser etc. I've tried rebooting, changing fonts and nothing seemed to work. what happened was I was on a site and it suggested that I hit the ctrl button so all the content could be read and when I did that everything shrunkSo it's NOT everything, it's just the browser. Go to VIEW - and choose the size of the text you want - or if your mouse has a scroll wheel press CTRL on the keyboard and use the scroll wheel to ADJUST the size of the text.It is EVERYTHING, my EMAIL other sites etc.Press Ctrl+0 (zero)

Solve : I "Over-deleted" and Killed my machine!?

Answer»

I have an older XP Pro system that was running slowly, probably from all of the junk I put on it. So, I got the brilliant idea to start to delete things using Revo Uninstaller. Well, after some overzealous uninstalling, it will now no longer boot. I suspect I messed with some Windows files.

I was able to boot using the Hiren's disk, but I really do not know what to do after that. Which tools should I try? Is there any way to run System Restore from that disk or ANOTHER way? I do not have the original XP disks.1) Systems do not slow down because there are too many programs installed

2) Can you boot to safe mode? If not, try system restore from a command prompt:

When the system first boots start tapping the F8 key until you get to the Advanced Startup Options Screen. Then Choose "Safe Mode With Command Prompt...
When the command prompt is displayed, type the following: [systemroot]\system32\restore\rstrui.exe (the system root folder is the folder to which you installed the XP operating system files, usually c:\windows).

Press Enter

Now you can follow the instructions on the screen to use System RestoreThanks for the quick response Allan. That is what happens when an amateur, me, is the "IT guy!" I could not even boot into safe mode, but I did not try Safe mode with Command Prompt.

I will try that tomorrow when I go to the office. If you have an XP cd you can also try a repair install

Boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option, allowing XP to install on top of itself. After completion you'll need to go to Windows Update and download & install all updates (except for hardware & driver related updates, which should never be downloaded from Windows Update - only from the OEM websites). Here is a clear tutorial on how to perform a repair install: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/138-how-to-repair-windows-xp/

If I do not have an original XP Pro disk, can I either use one from another computer that is XP Home, or is there a place to download the disk I need?Yes, you may borrow one if it is the same version (Home / Pro) and Service Pack as you have installed.I have located an XP Pro sp2 disk from a different computer. I will try that as well, AFTER I copy my important files!Today I did a repair install, and it seemed to go well. However, I ran into 1 glitch. After the install and reboot, it wants the windows activation code, but will not display the window for that. It just goes back to the screen to click on the user. I can go into safe mode, but cannot activate from there.

Any ideas? You can call to activate (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950929), but I've never HEARD of a repair install requiring reactivation. Thanks again Allan. I read that if I re-install IE the activation window will work. I may try that tomorrow. I will post back about my success...hopefully! Code: [Select]C:\Windows\System32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
^ Should bring up the activation window directly. Quote from: Allan on April 08, 2012, 12:54:54 PM

You can call to activate (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950929), but I've never heard of a repair install requiring reactivation.

Most of the time, this never happens because OEMs mass-activate machines using master OEM product keys. If there is a problem retrieving the SLIC code/etc from the motherboard or it is nonexistant, or the product key doesn't match (because it may have been changed to the one on the side of the computer), then the computer will require reactivation. Quote from: Gray1989 on April 08, 2012, 11:50:32 PM
Code: [Select]C:\Windows\System32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
^ Should bring up the activation window directly.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work in safe mode, and- if I understand the description of the problem- they aren't able to get into a USABLE Normal mode desktop.

Here is something that might work in safe mode to get back to normal mode.

Start-Run (Or Winkey-R or whatever you prefer)
Code: [Select]rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnk

This resets some of the Activation data, which may allow Normal mode to get to a usable desktop; run it in safe mode and give it a few moments and restart the machine. If it get's you back into normal mode, you could use the command given by Gray1989, run the shortcut in the start menu, or use the notification area ICON to get to the activation wizard. The latter two seem to only exist if the Installation detects it isn't activated, the third will start the product activation wizard (directly, as stated) which will be useful when the shortcut is gone and the notification area nagger is missing.

Of course, if the first command doesn't work, there seem to be sporadic reports (as you've noted) that installing IE8 seems to help resolve this problem.

If you can't figure out how to use internet explorer, etc. in normal mode, i will give you an example off the top of my head if you are actually stuck at the activation screen preventing you from logging on:

1. open one of the accessibility tools, such as narrator
2. go to the help section, it should open up a basic (.chm) windows-style help file
3. right-click an area where the descriptive information is kept
4. click "view source"
5. once inside notepad, you may open something by right-clicking it and selecting "open"

You may navigate to "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" for example to bring up internet explorer
You may navigate to "C:\Windows\System32\control.exe" to bring up control panel
You may navigate to "C:\Windows\System32\taskmgr.exe" to bring up task manager

from task manager, you can select File > Run to use the command I gave you

I should also bring up the fact that if there is a problem with the windows registry regarding internet explorer or any associative windows/ie CLSID classes, simply reinstalling internet explorer nor a "repair" will fix your problem. This is because most of your registry stays the exact same when you repair Windows or reinstall Internet Explorer. Thanks everyone. I FINALLY had success today!

What I had to do was re-install IE7. (I couldn't use IE8 because of the service pack I had) I was able to install that while in safe mode, then when I re-booted the activation window could be displayed. I was able to activate without a problem at that point.

Solve : Camera not showing in XP?

Answer»

Hello

I have a Canon PowerShot A40 (compatible with XP but not Win 7) and have downloaded the latest drivers from the Canon site, but I cannot see any connection to the camera from the PC (there is no icon under My COMPUTER, and nothing in the Scanners and Cameras folder in the Control Panel.

The cable connecting the camera and PC is brand new (never before used), and the camera is switched on (I can see photos in the viewfinder).

What could be wrong, please?

Thank you.

Forgive a silly question, but after downloading the driver did you install it (your post isn't clear on that point)?

Is it a usb connection? When you connect the camera to the computer do you hear a "recognition" sound and / or see a balloon acknowledging that a device has been connected?Hello Allan

Yes, the driver has been installed: I tried to install it again, but the system ADVISED me that it had already been installed.

Yes, it is a USB cable and I can hear a sound after connecting the cable to the PC tower and then turning the camera itself on (no balloon on screen, though).

Thanks for your your assistance.

High1

Did you also install the Canon software ? ?

Does it show up in Disk Management as a Mass Storage Device ? ?Hello Allan

No, I haven't installed the Canon software again (I will need to look for the disk).

I have checked Disk Management (please see attached|) and can see nothing there.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Actually it was patio who asked about the Canon SW and I agree you should MAKE sure it's installed.I will install it a little later and post back - thanks again

Solve : Del dimension will not boot up?

Answer»

My brother in law gave me his computer to fix. It is a Dell dimension 4600 with XP home. When it comes on the screen says press F! to try to reboot or F2 to enter SETUP. I changed the boot order to CD and floppy. Neither one will boot up. I put a new battery in it. after it wouldn't boot to neither a cd or floppy I pulled the hard drive out. I hooked it to my computer. I can access all of the files. Does anybody have any suggestions? If it won't boot to an external drive it's for one of three reasons:

1) That drive is not at the top of the bios boot order or

2) The medium to which you are trying to boot is either bad, not bootable, or not an original OS disc or

3) The drive itself is bad

One other long shot can be a bad mobo battery.I changed the battery. I changed the boot order to the cd and tried it. It wouldn't boot to it. I have a good bootable XP cd. I changed the boot order to the floppy also. It wouldn't boot to it either. The above are the only reasons I know of why a system will not boot to removable media. Quote from: Allan on April 05, 2012, 10:44:38 AM

The above are the only reasons I know of why a system will not boot to removable media.

Assuming the removable media are in good condition and are themselves bootable and the order correctly set up in the BIOS, to that I would add loose, damaged or disconnected power and/or data cables and failed motherboard hardware e.g. either part (disk controller) or all the chipset. Or the PSU (see below!)

By the way, when I was Googling to find out A. roughly how OLD this machine might be, to get an idea of whether it is worth B. spending much time and C. any money on it, (answer: A. OLD (9 years old P4 machine), B. no, and C. NO!!!)

I came ACROSS this:

Quote from: PC World Magazine
The 10 Worst PCs of All Time
Remember these clunkers? Many of them were so bad they're hard to forget.

#10. Dell Dimension 4600 (2003)

Consumers who purchased this machine entered a new dimension all right, the altered dimension of Dell *censored*. The Dimension 4600 was only a middling machine when new, but after about a year--or shortly after the standard warranty expired--power supplies in some machines began to fail. Worse, Dell's customer support misdiagnosed some of these problems as motherboard failures.

Dell's support forums filled up with complaints from similarly powerless users, but the COMPANY refused to admit to defects with the power supply. (Dell politely declined to comment for this article.) The Dimension 4600's problems were yet one more reason why the "Dude, You've GOT a Dell" tagline became a joke--though not a particularly amusing one for some customers.

So the PSU might have partly failed, I guess. Beware! Many Dell PSUs need to be replaced with Dell PSUs, not other brands, because although Dell used standard connectors, they wired them differently from industry standard, which means mixing Dell and non-Dell parts can lead to dead motherboard and PSU. Personally, on a 9 year old P4 Dell 4600 I would be advising a replacement purchase together with recovery of personal files from the drive.

(This machine was only #10 of the 10 worst. #1 was "any Packard Bell".)

Thanks.Rebooted and got a message saying I needed a Flash update which I did. Afterwards, the volume icon was there. Don't know if it was the reboot or Flash update but it is now back. Thanks.

Solve : Stuck in Boot Loop?

Hey, stuck in a boot loop on load up.  When the windows iconis loading the computer restarts itself.  Ive put in the xp cd to try and boot.  It asked me do you wish to run NRESTORE, when i type yes, it says:

Searsh failed.  Exiting.....

[DR-DOS] A:\>

This is where computing is beyond me, any help would be MUCH appreciated!!

Cheers

JayIt looks like you have a disk in the floppy drive. It might be a disc in the CAROM drive. Either case, take out the disks before you boot the computer. It is TRYING to start from a floppy or maybe the CD disc.Take all the CDs or floppys out of the computer and restart. Tap the F8 key repeatedly as the computer is first starting. This will bring up the advanced boot options screen. At that screen choose Safe Mode. Let us know if you can get into safe mode. If you can't, go back to the advanced boot options screen and choose Disable AUTOMATIC Restarts On System Failure. This should stop it from restarting and generate an error message. Post the ENTIRE message here, including the gibberish.

It would also be helpful to give us some more information about your computer. What the brand and model is, which version of windows and service packs you have, whether or not you've made any changes to the computer right before this started like installing a new program or updating or made any changes to the computer's hardware.

Solve : BSOD: How Do I Re-Install XP w/RAID on Dell Dimension? (LONG POST)?

Answer»

I have very limited PC know-how (never reloaded windows,  or flashed BIOS, or edited registry,  or anything like that.  no engine or transmission overhauls, just routine change oil kind of stuff) - scared enough to not be sure what to do.....Here's what i was able to get out of machine one of the few times recently that Windows did work/start up....

Machine:
Dell Dimension DV051
Dual Processors Pentium 4 3GHZ
2 GB RAM
2 ea. 160GB Internal Sony Hard Drives
Floppy Driver (that doesn't work, i think)
Phillips DVD RW
Sony DVD-ROM

Software:
Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002, Service Pack 3
BIOS:  Dell - 7 Phoenix ROM

Misc:
Norton AV
ZoneAlarm Firewall

This part i'm not entirely sure about, going from memory...

Array RAID1(Mirror)

Problem: started getting system resources using 99% of memory about 3 or 4 months ago about 5 minutes into powerup (svchost.exe if i remembe correctly).  i could terminate process, but 5 minutes later it would start again.  process viewer didn't help me to find problem (suspected virus/trojan, but  Norton scans, Ad-Aware scans, all came up empty).  finally used a Norton tool from website for getting read of bad/hard problems, which scanned the bootup process, and FOUND something, which was subsequently remedied by tool.  seemed to fix things for a while (about a month), but then, started getting random blue screens for no apparent reason (not sure if blue screens related to CPU usage or not), each blue screen usually with a different reason (nothing obvious, usually hexadecimal gibberish).

Now at point where PC will only start windows properly about 1 every 50 boot attempts, and then might only work for 5 minutes, or could work for 5 hours, before crashing.  i tried using system re-installation disk that came w/machine from Dell (never opened it before), but i can't get it to work or boot into the windows options for repair, installation, etc.  only thing that happens is splash screen for DELL, then tries to load Windows, but i get error:  Windows cant find the following file....(can't quite remember what it says, something like can't find system32, or config.sys, or something like that), with the Press R at restart, etc.  I've tried system re-install disk in both drives multiple times, but i can't get it to start (it does have boot files, on it right??).  anyways, just a big circle - restart, splash screen, windows can't load, try repair/restart, etc.

my question:  why won't Dell windows re-install disk work or start?  if i get into the array set up configuratioo utility (which i've managed on a couple of occassions), should i revert the RAID setup back to normal hard disk setup (which will erase everything on disk, i suspect), will that help?  i did get most of my files out of PC (family pics, taxes, etc.) and backed up to an external terabyte drive, so i can do a complete re-install of windows if i WANT (if i can get to that point), although i've never manually loaded drivers, or modems, or any of that stuff, so i'm real scared i'm going to break machine worse than what it might be (i suspect it might still be an easy fix, so i don't want to totally screw things up and erase everything if i don't have too...)

posting this at work, because, obviously, can't do it from home PC.

thanks in advance for any/all help advice....
Here  is a post about three years ago on the Dell site. Sounds like you. The post was never answered. Was that you?

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/p/19304398/19589173.aspx

Have you ever had the thing working good with just ONE SATA drive, not in a RAID configuration?

You said you have full backup of important stuff. If so, try a normal install with just one drive in a normal configuration. That will help identify issues that not part of the RAID setup. Or did you already try that?*censored*, that sounds EXACTLY like my predicament, to even include the bought refurbished/scratched part,  it sounds like he has the exact same machine.  but no, that wasn't me or my post. how EERIE.  i didn't have any problems until just the past few months.  too bad it never had a follow up or answer.

anyways, i'can't get the system disk that came with my machine to start or initiate.  i think i'm going to re-configure the RAID set up to a normal setup, and then hopefully i can get the windows operating system disk to start, so i can reload windows.  i probably would reload windows right now, but no matter what drive i put the disk in or what boot order i use, i can't get the disk to boot into the windows install or repair options.  i'm hoping the reverting the RAID back to normal will at least allow the windows disk to start.

does the above course of action sound prudent?  am i in danger when i erase the drives (by virtue of changing the RAID configuration back to normal) of not having the system start at all?  just wondering....Depending on  a number of factors,
the standard Windows XP CD will not start unless it finds:
A. A PATA drive marked as a basic MS DOS type.
B. Said drive must have either free space or be FAT32 or NTFS.

That is documented somewhere.  It is inherited from NT.  If all drives are full of an unknown  format, it can not start the install. This is to prevent the Install from corrupting a drive setup up for Unix, BSD or something else. There has to be 8 MB free. And the NBR must be understood by XP.

Once you have a PATA drive Windows likes, you can do an install. Even if the install is to another drive.

As I recall, this is the way RAID drives have to be brought up in Windows XP. Just find any OLD PATA drive you have and plug it in. You can use a tool like GPAPRT to boot from a CD and erase the drive, set it as MSDOS, and format it to FAT32 or NTFS.

Not to suggest the GPART is a safe tool, but it can be used to alter the disc flags and delete the partitioon(s). Or boot a Linux Live CD that has GPART or some other generic fdisk tool.

This is from my memory. The KB article is hard to find. Just do it, ask why later.not that anybody was/is probably worried about this, but the conclusion to my original post/problem is that i had memory start to go bad (I had 2G of memory, for which one of the strips/cards began acting up).  this was diagnosed by computer help/geek guy i found on craigslist.  he replaced memory, and got me up and running again.  that was about a month ago.

sorry for the delay in reporting this.  i don't think this topic was still open, but just in case it was, i just wanted to say thank you to any and all help i received.

Are those dumps THREE months old?
Are you running Windows XP 64 bit?

After reading you dump, my guess is you have a BAD memory stick. Each dump is a little different, suggesting that some information is wrong because of a memory glitch.

See if it will run with one stick of RAM, if your SYSTEM can do that.
If it runs good an one of the RAM sticks, get a download of the Miucrosot memory test  ISO and put it on a CD-R  with a ISO burner.  Replace all sticks, boot from the memory test CD.

So that would be a "yes".

Your errors are multiple and VARIED. This could be anything from a bad piece of hardware (motherboard, ram) to malware.  Since you've chosen not to converse with us it's difficult to know exactly where the problem lies.

1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked PROPERLY (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) Please run full scans with both your anti virus app and with MalwareBytes

3) To check the ram, download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.Like allen said the errors are varied. It could also be corruptions in the filesystem. You could try booting from windows CD and go into recovery console and do a chkdsk /r

It might be helpful to try another file MANAGER and see if it acts the same way. The are some free ones you could to download.
Here is a Video.

Well, i could of course try another shell,,,,but i'm that kinda guy who wants my stuff to work....and if they're not working normally i get a bit frustrated, so thank you for your reply, but it was more a solution to my problem i was looking for here.

Thanx anyways.

D9 I intended the post as a diagnostic aid. The idea is you do somersetting else to help eliminate possibilities. If another manager works, then the WE is damaged. If not, the files system MAY be damaged.

Please look this over. It may cover your problem
Repair or Fix Windows Explorer.

EDIT: If sou follow the thread all the way, the moderator eventually recommends doing a 'in-place upgrade', which amounts to a repair of the OS just to fix the Windows Explorer   problem.

There are web sites that claim to have a fix, for a price.  Your risk. Backup your stuff.
I found a solution, if this problem occurs for someone else here is the answer(at least for me).

Running win-XP Pro sp3, do the following.

Go to documents and settings\''your user name''\local settings\application data, look for the files
iconcache.db, DCBC2A71-70D8-4DAN-EHR8-E0D61DEA3FDF.index, and 2232(zerobyte-file), and delete them.
Then do a disk repair from PROPERTIES at c:\. Choose automatically fix system file errors, and run it!
Restart!
This helped for me, i tried to just do the diskrepair at first but nothing changed, but after deleting those files it worked, if you're not comfortable with deleting them just rename them, but i don't think they are that important for your system, since windows doesn't recreate them after reboot.

Thanx to ''Tolle'' OVERC, for the solution!!

REGARDS

D9  Thank you very much. That is cool!
Wish Microsoft would have documented that. The Windows Explorer problem has been around a long time and the is the first I ever heard of fixing  it it hat way!

i have a Toshiba tecra 8000 all the users have been deleted so i can not login in i have no restore disks can any one HELP me ? :S

That is a rather old laptop.
Perhaps the best you can do is go to a shop and have them copy any IMPORTANT data you have on the laptop. After that, they might be able to restore the machine, but it may not be worth the effort and money.
It is not possible to delete the admin account so there should still be the hidden admin account to log in to.

Quote

Press Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to display the Log on to Windows dialog box if you haven't got it already. Type "Administrator" (without the quotation marks) in the user name box and enter the password you created for the Administrator account during SETUP. After you log on as administrator you can create other accounts. If it doesn't work when you type Administrator try typing the nickname you used during setup.
it comes with "the system could not lo you on make shure your user name and domain are correct and type your password must be typed useing the correct case
Well, do you know the password that was used when the comp was setup? If not and it doesnt work, then download the nt password reset CD from here.

sorry phone didnt POST link http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/....Download the CD image and have a blank CD to burn then boot ur comp with the CD in the drive the rest should give you on screen instructions how to reset password. If it doesnt work you need to change ur boot order. That can easily be found on google.Sounds like an olde laptop that used network domain logons originally setup in the BIOS...don't think it's a Windows issue here...can i solve the problem by bios then

Solve : Errors/Warnings while trying to back up my computer.?

While trying to BACK up my computer the process stopped before it was finished. I got a whole list of warnings:

Unable to open "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD DX\Customizations\Dell\Media\Dark-Blue\CaptionBar\btn_help_s.png" - skipped.

Error: Could not access portions of directory System State\Registry.
You may not have permission to open the file, or the directory may be missing or damaged.

Does anyone know how to correct this in beginners terms, lol... Any help will be appreciated... Thanks!Perhaps there are errors in the file system. Run a check on the drive.

Open up My Computer, select the C: drive and right click and go down to proprieties. Next select the tools tab. Check the disk. Note: you will be told to RESTART the computer.

The error messages you got indicate file system errors which can be fixed with check disk.

Thank you! I did that so now I'll try and do ANOTHER backup and see what happens.

Solve : Disable MUICache?

Answer»

Is it possible to disable MUICache in windows. The reason I ask is because whenever I download a lot of programs into my temporary directory, it always puts them into the MUICache. After the temp files are cleaned, they still remain in the MUICache until CCleaner ends up having to clean them. Is there a way to just stop these temp files from going to the MUICache? Why do you think you need to do anything about them? It is normal Windows behaviour. Each time that you start using a new application, Windows automatically extracts the application name from the version resource of the exe file, and stores it for using it later, in the Registry key known as the 'MuiCache'. It's just a list of application names.

Quote

Why do you think you need to do anything about them?

No reason other than always having reg errors in CCleaner because of it. I'm just trying to avoid that if possible. Yes, I am a bit OCD about what is on my comp.

So there is no way to disable it? The reason why it causes me more errors than most people is because I am a programmer and I often have up to 30 exes in my temporary directory. Maybe a way to disable it only for temp? Quote from: Linux711 on April 22, 2012, 11:56:29 AM
No reason other than always having reg errors in CCleaner because of it.

I think the problem is caused by CCleaner. They are only "errors" because the author of CCleaner says they are. Personally, I think execessive use of magic registry cleaners can cause a lot of unnecessary alarm. Programs like CCleaner can be very dangerous to your computer. No registry “cleaner” is completely safe. There is also no hard evidence that “cleaning” out the registry has any effect on the overall speed of a machine. It will speed up searches within the registry itself – but has no effect on overall performance. I realise this view may be controversial, but I firmly believe it. The other functions, temp file deletion, etc, may have some very small marginal effect, but the registry "cleaning" function is just snake oil. If you actually want to know what the muicache registry entry does (and that's all it is - it's not a cache of files) here is a pretty good summary

I couldn't put it better... plus if you are a "programmer", then as such you should know better. Anyhow, the expression "OCD" carries the implication of pathologically unecessary, excessive and counterproductive "checking" and pointless overdoing of needless precautions.* It's something to be overcome and tamed, not something to be proud of or use as an explanation.

Yes, I do know. The only thing I do use is CCleaner (and occasionally the registry section of CCleaner).

I don't actually have OCD, I was just using it to describe how I don't like the fact that there are errors even if it doesn't really effect anything. I had a friend who actually had it, so I do know what it is like. I know that those "errors" are determined by the software company that produces CCleaner, but the files in the MUICache stay even after the exe is removed from temp, thus making a bunch of invalid file entries in the registry. I know that may not bother some, but it does for me because I know that, that list will grow forever for no reason. And being a programmer, it makes me angry when I see design flaws that allow for an infinite buildup of information over time like that (not that it would do any harm, just use more space). They aren't errors. They aren't issues, either.

All of those traits are Obsessive. In any case, it's wrong- the data doesn't expand forever. I only have 244 entries, but I've definitely run far more than 244 applications in the last 4 YEARS. Evidently there is some sort of clean-up logic that runs; perhaps at boot time, or maybe as part of ProcessIdleTasks(). Therefore if a cache entry is backing data that is no longer present one can logically surmise that the same CLEANUP logic would eventually purge those entries.

It also seems to top out at 500, at which point older entries seem to be purged. If anything is flawed here it is your inability to properly research something before forming both an opinion as well as coming to a conclusion about a "fix".

The idea of MUICache is to prevent disk hits as much as possible, because we could easily be talking about a tape backup or some other device whose access times are large. The problem with caches is when they have bad policies or when they get stale too easily; I see neither of these for MUICache, which definitely get's cleaned up by normal Operating System activity, and they don't get stale either unless you hack AROUND with the executables they represent since as far as I can tell the information is updated if the registry key is older than the file it caches information for.

Anyway, the entry that Salmon trout links, the author says they don't know what MUICache stands for.

It stands for Multilingual User Interface, and is a cache DESIGNED to prevent disk access and processes required to extract locale-specific resources (typically icons and file descriptions). All you do by deleting entries there is make it take a few ms longer the next time you access those entries. Since entries that represent missing files will eventually be purged, you gain nothing.

Quote

I thought it was never cleared. Thanks.

How did you figure that out? Where does the 500 come from?

I made an application that copied itself, appended a number to the end of the executable, gave it a unique name and shelled the result, which repeated the process. (I of course added a pretty generic Version resource) The registry section filled up with some of the entries but it didn't go past 500 at any point. it seemed to start purging older entries (that is, really old ones that were from removable drives or temp folders and whatnot). My guess is that the logic will only purge entries that are a certain age, since most of the other entries remained, too. Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 22, 2012, 05:41:01 PM

I don't know. I've used ccleaner for years too and it never causes any problems. I think they were more specifically referring to registry cleaners like reg mechanic or other similar tools that only scan the reg for errors and delete them and claim that it will magically "speed up".

Solve : Problem with "search"function?

When I used to click on this icon, I got a search window that offered several different search options and there was a little dog wagging his tail while the search was in progrress.

Now, all I get when I click on the icon is the dog and  a blank dark blue background, with no way for me to begin a search.

Can someone PLEASE HELP me?

Thanks,
George ZissisGeorge Zissis.......When did this start ? Have you had any viruses or spyware attachs recently ? Have you made any changes to any of your settings ?

I would erase those kind of animated tools because usually there is spyware within and second it messes up your programs (Bonzi Buddy for e.g.)

Can you uninstall that program from your Add/Remove programs list in the control panel?Burton, thanks for your help.  The problem is not with a search bar, rather it  is the search tool which is a part of Microsoft Windows.  The search icon is found on the Start Menu.  This replaces the "Find" function of previous windows releases.   Do you know what I'm trying to DESCRIBE here? Is this the problem?: http://www.dougknox.com/images/xp_search_error.jpg

Then you could try http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=9D1F0B73-259A-4A1B-93A4-F02C21BCB15AGzissis, you haven't said if you've scanned for viruses? Also what changes did you make when you fooled around with your system? Have you tried a system retstore?

Burton, that dog is the Windows built in search feature. It's annoying and a waste of memory in my opinion. It can be turned off but not uninstalled. The Win 98 search feature is better in my opinion. You don't have to answer a millions searh wizard questions, just straight to the point. If it isn't broke don't fix it...Hi Burton,
I followed your suggestion and clicked on the microsoft download link that you provided.

This link required me to go through a Windows Validation process.

I went through the process, was provided with a passcode, and downloaded the application.

However, when I ran the application, all I got was a dialog box with the heading "Genuine Windows Hypertext Application".

The box was empty and I have no idea as to what to do next.

Can you go through the process to see if you get a different result?

Thanks for your help.

George ZissisNeil,
My virus scans are up to date.
I' feel stupid because I can't remember what the changes were.  I believe they were I.E. related.

Is there another way that I can do file searches in XP without using that icon on the start menu?

Also, how do I restore?   I did it once a long time ago, but don't remember the sequence.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378  or reboot pc and hold down the f8 key and chose last good CONFIG...i would still run a virus scan!Sorry I dont have time to go through the installation process as explained above, but I can inform you on the restore of a previous WinXP system backup.

Go to Start - Run and type 'msconfig', then bottom button ('start system restore' or similar) and then select top option to choose a last system restore by date (or 3rd option for last system restore if no check points available there)

Solve : Windows XP Text narratives unreadable. Hieroglyphics. Symbols not words/letters?

Answer»

I downloaded PC Mighty Max to help with an AcroPDF.dll problem I've been having for a while.  After running that, Windows will no longer boot up. It took PC Mighty Max almost 20 hours to run through system scan.  It said I had problems with my directory.  After completing system scan, all text is no symbols and unreadable shapes and lines.  Not sure if PC Mighty Max is responsible but this all occurred after running the system scan.  It looks like Egyption hieroglyphics now.  I can boot up in Safe Mode but can't read any of the text to go to system restore to an earlier time.  Boot up with last good settings doesn't WORK either.  I can put in the boot disk (DVD) and select command prompt.  It gives me an A: prompt but I can't get out of the A:  I try to secect C: (my hard drive) but it says C: is an invalid directory.  All I can get is A: and B: in DOS.  After a PERIOD of inactivity, screen saver will come on and work.  Only readable text are Windows logo and Icon images.  Text below Icons is a jumbled mess of symbols, partial letters, triangles and lines.  I can get to the page where you can select Owner or Administrator but I only recognize the page; I can't read any of the text.  My computer isn't acting right and I'm not sure even if I could navigate to the restore to earlier time that it WOULD work.  I don't want to have to reload/overwrite everything with the boot disk but I may have no other options.  I'm getting nowhere.  I've searched through all posts and found nothing similar to this problem.  Please helphave you fixed the SYMBOL problem?  if so, what did you do? I have the same problem.

He has two drives, each with an OS.When 2 operating systems are installed in this way, each individual OS needs to have total control of the machine, either booting from cold or resuming, so you can't switch instantly. You have to SHUT down one OS and restart the computer. However, if you have a legal copy of Windows 7 Professional or above, you can download XP Mode, which, in a nutshell, is Microsoft Virtual PC plus an install of XP Professional. This way you can have both running at once, and just go from one to the other with the click of a mouse. If you don't have W7 Pro you may be able to download the free VMWare Player and if you have an XP install disk you can create a virtual machine and get the same result. I understand diffident stuff, Patio.
His post indicates that it is working and there is not conflict. He just wants it to be faster.
He mentions the F12 key. That is a BIOS selection. That means both drives were installed exasperatedly and each has the full install of at least one OS. If it had been installed otherwise, with only none drive active, the F12 key would not successfully boot either drive. The BIOS never selects partitions, only devices, and does not boot drives not set as active.
But yes, it would really hav helped a lot if the OP would have spelled out the details and we would not have to go into the back and forth chatter.
After all is said... REPLY #4 by Salmon Trout is the best and maybe only answer for what the OP wants. You managed to miss my whole point.

Solve : Moving programs to create space on hard drive?

Answer»

On my Windows XP SP3 computer I have a C drive which has 2GB free, and a D drive which has 80GB free

Is there a free program out there which will let me move some programs from C to D, obviously so they still work ok?

many thanksEasier to move some of the "D" to the "C", with Easus Partition Master Home Edition.
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htmMoving installed programs may not be very clean (depending upon the program itself)
All standalone programs, or even programs that only write to one folder when installing shouldn't be a CONCERN too much (ie There still may be shortcuts and registry entries to be concerned about)

But programs such as an Antivirus, or OFFICE, or even many games, install to multiple folders!
In this case (although there are 'move programs' that try to do this) your best option is to uninstall these large space consuming programs, and then just cleanly re-install them to your D Drive.
Think of it this way, if your 'C' Drive fails one day, you may need to do this anyway (re-install programs)

Another option (and probably preferred under the CIRCUMSTANCES!) is to get a larger capacity 'C' drive itself.
This obviously depends upon if C & D are partitions or 2 physical drives? In either case, you may want to think about purchasing a larger drive. 2 Gig left, means you actually prefer the C drive anyway, plus many programs don't have the modify option of installing to another drive anyway.

Computer Commando got it right. Just use Easeus to move free space from d: to c:

I suggest you use disc imaging software to create an image of your hd before manipulating partitions. The best free disc imaging software is probably Macrium Reflect Quote from: KerryE on November 28, 2011, 03:53:39 AM

On my Windows XP SP3 computer I have a C drive which has 2GB free, and a D drive which has 80GB free
Please note, no partitioning software will HELP you, if these are individual hard drives.
Again, uninstall/re-install is preferred (in my view!)Many THANKS for the replies.

How can I tell if I have one hard drive before I start?Start > Run > diskmgmt.msc > ok
Look for the disk that has your hard drives name(s)
If both are there, then you have one split hard drive
If there is one there and another on a different disk, you have 2 separate hard drivesIn an attempt to free up space on my C drive - I moved (yes moved rather than copy) all my Outlook Express dbx files onto the D drive. It freed up about 4GB, I created a new folder on the D drive for this, and changed the Store Folder location in OE to this new location.

Sadly, I seem to have lost virtually everything! To start with I noticed that for example Sent Items.dbx had shrunk from 1GB to 75kb. Then for some reason most of the .dbx files have disappeared, including the Sent Items.dbx - how can this be?

I have obviously made a bit of a *censored* up, is there any way of finding my old Sent Items.dbx file?

I have re-set the Store File location back to the original so new .dbx files have been created in this location.Well, I still use OE myself
Since you moved ALL your DBX files, I suspect this would also include the 'Sent Items.dbx' file?
If so, then all you need to do is 'copy' the Sent Items.dbx file back over the top of your new (much smaller) Sent Items.dbx file (assuming you don't care about recent 'sent' items of course.

So the question remains, do you have a backup on drive D of your Sent Items.dbx (and others) files? (making that 4 gigabyte of data)

You can view the OE 'store folder' location by selecting: Tools -> Options; then the Maintenance tab and click the "Store Folder" button.

By the way, you obviously want this old 'sent items' file? Generally I delete everything in it myself  Nobody has told him he can move all of my documents with no problem. It is a built-tin feature of Windows.

Also, he can um-intall programs that came for a CD and then re-install them on the second drive.

Solve : Reformatted now loads to black screen!?

Answer»

I am using a Compaq Presario V2000 (It's  a 2005)
I reformatted using the Operating System CD, and reinstalled Windows. I load the Windows logo and then goes to a black screen and nothing.
I loaded the Operating Systems CD again: On Welcome to Setup I press ENTER to set up Windows XP. I press F8 to agree to License Agreement. At the bottom of screen it says "searching for previous versions of Microsoft Windows" and does nothing else, it just freezes there.
If I go onto Safe mode with Command Prompt it loads up to "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys" and then after a while it says SOMETHING like beginning dump of physical memory but I can't read all of it because it automatically restarts. I would be so grateful if someone could HELP me. It may take me a while to check this because I have no way to access the internet at home and will have to go to sister's house to do it. God, when the system first crashed I thought "wonderful, I'll have to reformat and reinstall windows", how I wish it had been that easy! I'm not a complete novice, I have some experience with COMPUTERS, but this has stumped me! Help PLEASE! Please help me! What exactly does it say on this XP CD ? ?Looks like the system is having a BSOD, but it's rebooting so you can't read the info. Download a boot CD such as Bart PE or something (Linux would work too). Use it to mount your system partition, then goto C:\WINDOWS\MiniDump and post the contents of the file here.
