C:/WINDOWS/System32/userinit.exe so SHUD i consider the one in software distribution as a virus or not    pls help Quote

so shud i consider the one in software distribution as a virus or not

Yes, you should. The ONLY PLACES it should be in are C:\WINDOWS\System32 and also possibly C:\WINDOWS\System32\dllcache

EDIT: I thought you said downloads folder of opera but then you listed C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution. It is DEFINITELY a virus if it is in the downloads folder of opera, but not necessarily if it's in software distribution. But here is the big question: Is it running in task manager? (If it's a minute or two after you logged in, then that doesn't count)thyx alot for the ANSWER man but another question i have newfolder.exe so i cant acess manager, folder options, cmd and run i was using newfolder remove tool to delete newfolder.exe!!! Well you're definitely infected....

Clik Here...haha thyx

Solve : computer does not boot to windows?

Answer»

I am using a desktop computer with the below configuration
MS Windows XP Home SP3
Intel Core2 Duo,CPU [email protected],3.0GB RAM,Intel G45/G43 Express Chipset

I used the computer only a few hours ago and shut down normally, but now on power on It does not boot to windows but shows the following message
"REBOOT AND SELECT PROPER BOOT DEVICE OR INSERT BOOT MEDIA IN SELECTED BOOT DEVICE AND PRESS A KEY"

please advise what should be done. I don't have a bootable CD. I have the original Windows xp home Cd however.

Is your BIOS set to boot from your hard drive?
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ss/bootorderchange.htm
Make sure the Hard Drive is set at the primary boot device.

If you can't find an entry for "Hard Drive" and "Reboot....Press A Key" shows up, try RESETTING your CMOS. Same error? That's because your motherboard isn't detecting your hard drive. Try doing some SIMPLE things first to ensure it still works, such as swapping cables, plugging the hard drive into a different SATA port/different IDE connector, plugging it into a different 4-Pin Molex/SATA power connector from the power supply, ETC.

Solve : Browser/address box help?

Answer»

When I type 'wood patterns' in the address box, my puter shows a Folder and a page with all of the site's I have saved in my Favorites instead of doing a search on the web. Normally in the address box there is a 'e' and dozens of sites containing those words show up, now a file folder is showing up. I just  added  two new folders to my Favorites and added some new sites to them. This is when the problem started.  I didn't change any settings.

I have done a System Restore, cleared the cache, cookies, temp files; RAN Spybot, SpySubtract, Shredder.... none of this has helped. I don't know what else to do.

Any ideas PLEASE??

Thank you,
Karrie

I SUPPOSE you are using the search within Windows Explorer? Try the Extras - Internet Options menu and check under 'Browsing' in the advanced tab (I am guessing at the names for I have the german version)

There at the top or the BOTTOM of the list there may be an option you have to tick or tick off. I am not sure, but it may GET you on the right track :-/Are you trying to do an Internet search or access your favorates? If you want easy Internet searches I suggest you get the Google toolbar. Then you can just type the search in a box and it will go.I am trying to do an internet search.

I just don't understand why my computer would start doing it differently as I have not changed any settings. I have checked for viruses and spyware, there is nothing.

Lilrose, it could be possible that the site you were using to search has changed?Nope, nothing has changed.  Thank you for trying to help In IE try going to Tools-->Internet Options-->Advanced

Scroll down to "Search from address bar" and PICK which ever applies to you.

Solve : Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz Overheating?

Answer»

Hello, Please Help me now..
 My PC specs are:
Intel Pentium 4CPU 3.00Ghz Dual Core.
2GB of RAM
ATI RADEON X1550 256MB (approx. memory 512mb)
Windows XP Home Edition SP 3 (2002 year)
232GB HardDisk
BioStar Motherboard
....
Avast FREE v6.0
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free  version.
So My Problem Is:
1month ago my PC tempretura whas normal (20C to 32C and if it went to 35C or more, it shut down)
But like 3weeks or more ago, Me,My Sisters friend(Who is 22years OLD) Were Cleaning my computer.
We *unconnected* the heatsink and cleaned it.
Then We had some Problems putting*connecting* it back, cause 2of the Black SCREW(or what they are) where kinda loose.
When We put it back, my pc at startup whas 32C , and growing.
The Temperature When IM Sitting on the PC is 35C to 65C , and the pc doesnt shutdown!
I whas able to play CSS,CS 1.6,BF2,NFS MW and GTA SA with no lag.
But Now CSS is 10fps to 40fps and all other games lag.
GTA SA doesnt lag so much.
So, what could be the problem?
And Why It Doesnt Shut Down?

(click On the ENG on top left)
and click on the:
Attēls/Picture/Photo.
P.S Im only 11years old, and my sister and hes friend is now living in sweden.

It sounds as if the heatsink is not firmly attached.  I'd advise removing the heatsink, cleaning the old thermal paste off both the CPU and heatsink with a lint free cloth and rubbing alcohol, then applying new thermal paste (a dot the size of a grain of rice is enough) and re attaching the heatsink securely.
If all four push pins are not tight, the heatsink will not do its job properly.
Hope this helps.Ok, thanks for the fast reply.
But The Problem For now:
Im Living With My GrandMother right now.
So - My Dad Is In Sweden (With my Sister and her friend)
And - My Mom is in Australia(in Europe:D)
I need to wait till summer, so then we can do the fixy things again:)
Thank you for the reply.
Hope this will work!
No problem, good luck with it
Feel free to post back if you need any more help once you're back with the PC and able to give it a go.But just a question:
Does the overheating make the CPU slower?
It can do, yes.  As the CPU exceeds a predefined temperature, the overheat protection will kick in, which reduces the CPU's speed to prevent damage.  If the CPU continues to heat up past this point and exceeds a higher temperature cutoff, the PC will shut off completely, again to protect the CPU.
So, overheating could definitely be causing the slowdown in games you described, it's one of the first things I would check for when presented with this kind of problem. The Max Temperature Ive had *after the cleaning what made the cpu heat* whas 64C i think.
And It doesnt shutdown.
But when i didnt had any problems, when it went to 36 or 37C it shutdown.I am a bit confused here.

Intel Pentium 4CPU 3.00Ghz Dual Core.

The Pentium 4 was not a dual core CPU. Later ones had "hyperthreading" where one core pretended to be two cores. I had a 3.00 GHz Pentium 4 computer from 2004 onwards (I still have it) and the idle temperature was about 35 C and at 100% usage the temperature could get to 62 to 65 C. This is normal for one of those CPUs. They ran hot and the max allowed temp could be over 70 C for some models. So I am very surprised about the previous situation where you say

Quote

This does not sound like any desktop Pentium 4 I have heard of. If it is a P4, it does not sound as if there is very much wrong.

HMM, strange.
But look at the pictures.
And after this problem, i felt my pc slower, and i couldnt play alot of games cause of the lag.

But look at the pictures.

I did look at the pictures. You have not said what type of Pentium 4 (they made lots of different ones) but they look like OK temps for an idling desktop P4. Mine was a 3.00 GHz Prescott core.

There could be plenty of other reasons for lagging games. Anyhow, if the CPU is seriously overheating, (and 65 C is not serious for a P4 on full load) then you would not be playing any games.

hmm. okay,
When i load CSS it says 2cores:
1physical or sumthing.
1 one something.
When i open task manager
Performance
CPU Usage History (2tabs)
Its really stupid to go so down from a good CPU/PC.

Solve : trying to install windows?

Answer»

I reformatted one of my daughters computers and tried to reinstall windows xp. When I change it to cd boot first it says "failure" then "press a to reboot". I have a boot disk for WINDOWS ME but when I change to the D drive and type in setup I get this "application cannot be run in dos mode". I don't know what this means. I tried to download ANOTHER boot disk on my other computer but when I run it I get the message     "c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications".
ANY HELP APPRECIATED.Click on the following:
How do I install Microsoft Windows XPwhat is the make of this pc??and why have you formated it??what problem did you have before?
To start WIN XP  from the CDROM with a boot disk

If you use a win98/me boot disk it will install a virtual drive and push your Cdrom drive letter up one letter

Hard drive no partitions C
Virtual drive (tools)       D
Cdrom drive will be       E

To start XP you need to be in the i386 folder then type winnt   NOT SETUP

E:\cd i386 press enter
Then type winnt

Also, you might want to run smartdrv before you install XP. I know its on the ME CD, it might be on the 98 CD. It will speed up the install of XP.

On the ME cd it in folder win9x. All you do is go to that dir and type smartdrv enter then smartdrv again.

Solve : Wlan makes my computer skip?

Answer»

When I'm running my WLAN and windows xp pro my computer skips every 10-30 seconds.  It freezes for a second and then recovers.  Any ideas how to FIX it?

I just updated the drivers for my wlan and it didnt fix the skipping.

Thanks in advanceQuick question:  Does your computer does this when you are using a cat 5 cable to the router/switch?have you got wlan encypted??......SCAN for trojans etc.....CHECK the firewall logs??for anybody port scanning your system??How much memory does your computer have? You MIGHT need to add some more to speed things up...

[glb]Flame[/glb]It doesnt skip when Im connected to the lan through a cable, it only skips when Im using the wireless.  I've scanned for trojans and viruses.  I have 1 gb of ram,  ram might be an issue now that I think about it.

The computer sometimes restartes with a blue screen "Physical Memory Dump."

I turn on/off the wlan with a button on my computer.  Theres a wireless button to turn it off/on.  Could this be an issue?  Should I try  leaving it on and just turing the wireless on/off using the Wireless Connection Icon? Quote

It would appear that the WLan is creating this situation
have you tried what you proposed to see ?
Has it ever worked properly or is this something that has just started ?
Could you please explain what you mean by my pc skips every 10 - 30 seconds ? Skips what ?
let us know

dl65
I'm not really sure if it has just started or not.  Ive never had WLAN before so I kept the WLAN off.

Just as a cd would skip it just completely halts or freezes for for about .5 - 1 seconds.  Everything the computer is doing stops and freezes for about half or one second.

Any sounds are stopped and delayed for about 1 second and PICK up where they left off.  The LCD screen freezes for 1 second and then CATCHES up.

I dont really know how to describe it, the whole computer just halts and then starts after 1 second.  have you got the router near a moblie phone...is the router on the wall next to an electrical source?? Have you scanned for bugs and scanners yet........for you wlan to skip/dip.......someone maybe acccessing your system!!try and move the router??Try to find an updated driver / firmware on your product's website (is it a dlink?).

If all updated, have you recently done a Windows Update? That solves quite a few errors.

Finally, if those dont work, try a BIOS flash from your PC supplier's website

Solve : Registery Cleaner?

Answer»

I was just wondering is it wise to use a Registery cleaner, when you have had your windows installed for some time.

I use adware and SPY blaster, but i was looking at down loading a free Registery program and hopefully doing and auto CLEAN, But is there a risk with this and if not do you know what is a good Reg cleaner.fly.....Just a word of advice......if your going to play around in the registry....make sure you have a backup before you start making changes .......As far as free registry cleaners........I would be a little cautious........Which ONE were you thinking about D/L ?
I use a registry cleaner called registry FIRST aid.....but like most apps it doesn't get everything. It does a decent job despite missing the odd thing .
If you've had Win whatever installed for a while , there is no doubt , a lot of odds and sods in the registry that are left over from installs and removals ......
Just proceed with caution in the registry .....

let us know

dl65 Try RegClean from MS. It makes a backup of everything it removes and it can be easily restored. As previously stated, no one program is perfect, but this MIGHT be the safest.

Solve : Deleting My Recent Documents ??

Answer»

I have a few questions, as a part of my usual cleaning routine should I be deleting my recent documents as well ? I have over 1000 files in my recent documents along with a bunch of FOLDERS, most of the files are resized photo's.

Normally my routine goes like this:

Start-Run-cleanmgr-Temp files.

Start-Control Panel-Internet Options-Delete Browsing History.

Start-Run-%temp%

Empty Recycle Bin.

Also how do I find My Recent Documents ? currently the only way I can find my recent documents is through a browse window at a website like Photobucket, whenever I use my photo resizer it sends the new resized photo to my recent documents, I've looked everywhere on my computer but haven't been able to find my recent documents except through a browse window, is there another way to find it ?Are you sure you're not confusing My Recent Documents with My Documents? They're not the same.

My Recent Documents should only contain shortcuts to the files, not the original files themselves. These are the shortcuts show in the pop-out menu of the Start Menu. It should not contain the original files.

My Documents is where the original files should be kept, not shortcuts. Thanks quaxo, nope I'm not CONFUSED lol, it's only whenever I resize photos that I have to look in my recent documents to find them, ocassionally I've FOUND when I resize more than five photos some of them seem to go missing so if I were able to delete all the old stuff in my recent documents it would be easier to find the stuff I'm currently working on, if everything in my recent documents are links as you say  and I delete them will the originals still be intact ?
Just as quaxo said, recent documents is only a list of shortcuts. Deleting the contents is OK. Wonderful, thank you Mr G  Quote from: kelly1 on April 23, 2012, 09:39:46 PM

Solve : Cannot connect or see workgroup computers?

Answer»

Hello. I cannot figure out why XP HOME ed cannot find the other computers (2- WIN98, and 1- Linux, and TIVO)  in the workgroup. All IP addresses starting with 192.168.2.   , All gateway addresses are 192.168.2.1. The subnet mask is 255.255.255.0.
All workgroup names are MSHOME. Files and directories are shared. I can ping all addresses from all computers. Still not able to see other workgroup computers. Can the other MACHINES see each other and the XP box?Bob try this. I know it sounds unlikely, but I've seen it work. I GUESS your problem is the computers cannot be seen in network places? USING the search tool, go to search for other computers (not files) and type in the computer name. Strange but it's worked on two networks for me.

Do you have a firewall? Is it configuered properly?

I take it the other computers on the network work fine?

Have you tried running the network wizard? It gives you the OPTION to create a network disk to use on other computers. I've never tried it myself, but it's worth a shot. I'm not sure if it's intended for non-XP computers though.

Hope I've helped.

Solve : Momentary blue screen?

Answer»

Greetings.

I can find lots of threads with "blue screen" issues but none are like this one as far as I could determine. I spent some time searching the forums and the FAQs. If I missed a thread that addresses this issue I APOLOGISE for this new topic.

I use LogonStudio and have had no problems with it until very recently. The problem is nothing crucial, just annoying. The whole idea of using something like LogonStudio is to not see the oem or default screens that COME with the OS.

So, I was using XP Home and I switched to XP Pro. I use the automatic logon since I'm the only person that uses my ancient PC so it goes right to a custom Bootskin graphic and from that to a custom LogonStudio skin. That transition was always seamless before I installed XP Pro. Now, after the Bootskin graphic a blank blue screen flashes up for less than a second before the Logonstudio skin comes up.

Now there's a blank blue bitmap in logonui.exe so I changed that to black using Resource Hacker and a replacer command but that didn't work. Nothing changed.

Theres no blank blue blue bitmap in the ntoskrnl.exe file so I'm not gonna mess with it. I can't figure out why this millisecond blue screen keeps popping up and I'd really like to GET rid of it. I know it's part of the OEM / default boot process but I can't determine its source so I can change it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Even THOUGH it's not a serious problem and doesn't affect the performance of the system in any way that I can discern, it really AGGRAVATES me!

Solve : I don't know what to search for?

Answer»

My computer (HP pavillion media center edition m3000y, with Windows xp SP3) is stuck in a reboot mode, and I can't seem to get anywhere.  I really just want to move a couple of critical files to a usb and buy a new computer!

Computer POWERS on, and starts the start-up process.
It will stop and ask me where do I want to start:
Windows (regular)
Windows recovery console

If I choose recovery console, I get the message can't start because file acpi.sys is corrupted
If I choose the regular option, I get can't start because system32\drivers\ntfs.sys is missing or corrupt
If I try safe mode with command prompt, computer stops at multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\agp440.sys

I am not sure what (if ANYTHING) I can do.  Do not have an install DISC, as this computer did not have one when purchased - preloaded software.  I have recovery disks that I made (8 cds worth) but they aren't bootable, I guess.
I could go to a friend's house and possibly make a boot floppy disc if that might help.

Any suggestions will be most appreciated.See Here...  for hooking it up to a workin PC to grab your data...

The other option is buying a USB external enclosure...

NOTE: The HDD does NOT need to be bootable to do this.Wow, this looks INTIMIDATING, but I appreciate the helpful link!  I was really hoping I could somehow just get to a workable dos prompt, and then do a copy from there.  Do you think that is possible? That would actually be more work than just hooking it up as a Slave drive to be honest...If it was me, I'd find it easier to just use a free Linux boot CD and copy the files using that because then you don't have to open the case, remove drive, etc.

EDIT: It would probably be easiest with Bart PE though, but it is a LITTLE harder to obtain because you have to build it from a working windows xp install from any comp. You could use puppy linux. It takes 3 minutes to remove a HDD...
If he uses the Puppy method where is he going to copy the files to ? ? The PC is currently inaccessable...
If the HDD is moved to a working PC he can copy them to a HDD...burn them to CD/DVD or move them to an external.

Solve : Corrupted external drive and computer in continuous reboot, please help!?

Answer»

Hello everyone! I am so desperate at this point, having tried whatever I could with the little knowledge I have about computers. For starters, I accidentally plugged out my 2tb external drive while the computer was scanning it. After that I was told that my drive was corrupted. So I ran chkdsk on my drive and I was able to get some items back, but not all, I have missing folders. Also, trying to open a folder makes my computer freeze up, but I'm sure its not a virus. All of this started when I got the corrupted message. Trying to fix this problem, I set my external drive as active, thinking this would fix the problem.  When I saw that it didn't fix the problem, I was unable to mark it as inactive. I went through all the prompts in the chkdsk black screen only to get stuck at the last prompt. Now I'm having an even bigger problem because my computer is doing this continuous boot. When it boots up, it attempts to go to the blue chkdsk screen for like 1 second and then it boots as normal. When it asks me what mode to boot up in, no matter what mode I select (safe, normal) it reboots all over again. I have also tried to do a repair using my Windows disc, but when asked to select my c drive, I see no letter next to the drive, so I can't select it. I am at my witts end with this issue, trying to handle it myself with no avail. I really need your help, anybody! You would make me so happy, I'll have all my sentimental things back and I'll be able to go back to creating music. I've had this problem for almost a year now and don't know where else to TURN. Thank you so so much in advance!I'm glad you got most of your persoanl stuff from the external...
However it's time to move on as it sounds like chkdsk or whatever you had RUNNING on the external is now affecting the regular operation of your PC.
Boot normally...go to DISK management and do a full format of the external HDD.

Format it NTFS and you should be good to go from there...Hello patio. I can't get to my desktop at all. The computer is in continuous reboot. As far as the rest of the stuff on my external drive goes, I really need them back. Lots of sentimental things such as my late grandmother's pictures and videos. Losing them is not an option for me, i'm looking for a way to retrieve it. Thanks Patio.I know that you probably know that interrupting a process on an external device by unplugging/shutting down the device is an absolute no no. patio is happy that you were able to retrieve some of your data but is suggesting that you will NOT be able to retrieve any other. As a preliminary step before reformatting the external (which is solely for the purpose of hopefully being able to use the drive again --but as if it were a brand new unused drive) just to confirm that you can use the external on another computer to see if it presents in a different fashion--but that is doubtful. There are free software programs that can be tried to retrieve more data from the drive. However when a similar issue arose for me the one i tried did not access any additional data. For the moment because of the impact this drive is having on your computer it is necessary to disconnect it from the computer and attempt to regain use of the computer. I have the impression that even when the device is removed that you still cannot get into safe mode is that so? truenorth Quote from: Lexx on April 21, 2012, 01:59:18 PM

Lots of sentimental things such as my late grandmother's pictures and videos. Losing them is not an option for me, i'm looking for a way to retrieve it. Thanks Patio.

Have you tried to hook up the external to another working PC ? ?Yes Truenorth, I can't even get it to boot in safe mode. And Patio, I've tried hooking it up to my other pc, and when I do, I get the blue screen. Loosing the data on my external is not an option for me, I'm looking for a solution to get all my data back. If no one has a solution for that then I'd rather just focus on how to get my pc to start up, is there anything I can do in BIOS? Thank you for your replies! If you can get into the bios you will have 3 choices.
1.start normally
2.start in safe mode
3.start with command prompt
As i understand from your initial post none of those choices alter the situation. But you do not specifically mention choice 3. If you have not done that one do so and tell us where the process stops or if the reboot automatically occurs. If you can get into the BIOS chose "restore defaults" and tell us the results. You could also try removing the CMOS battery for about a minute and reinsert. If you try that process be sure the power connection is removed from the wall and that you touch the case BEFORE removing the battery to discharge static electricity. You state that NOT retrieving the HDD data is NOT an option. Here is a list of free data recovery software that you can try.
http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/collection/8348/free_hard_disk_utilities_recover_deleted_files_and_lost_data.html Here is a link that offers the service (very expensive) with no fee if data not recovered. May not be relevant to your geography but will give you an idea of what your facing via that route.

Good luck and keep us informed please as to your progress.truenorthGood morning Truenorth. I am like all smiles right now because I got my computer to boot to my desktop! What I did was go into Bios and set cd Rom as my main boot, then it LOADED the disc's contents and I pressed r for repair, then it took me to the command page where I pressed chkdsk /p. It checked my c drive and then I exited. When restating the computer, it loaded up with no problems. Thank you so much, that's one problem tackled! An excellent choice. By the way ensure that your optical drive is retained as initial boot priority as in future instances of this nature it will (as you now know) make recovery more available. Some days are cherries some days are the pits. Glad to see today was a cherry for you. Decided what your going to do re the file retrieval on the external? truenorthA definite cherry Truenorth!  . I decided to do a backup of my entire c drive. It says it will take 7 days to complete, but I doubt that, its only 150gb. When that's done, I plan to find a way to set my external drive as inactive before I try to retrieve the rest of my data. The way I see it, anything's possible, so I'm sure I will get all my folders back, I just need to keep trying different ways. When I try to set it as inactive, it goes through all the prompts like it's attempting to mark it as inactive, then it just stops at the last prompt. Do you know why that might be HAPPENING?

Solve : Computer keeps restarting right after booting up?

Answer»

My computer keeps restarting just a few seconds after booting up. It only starts in Safe Mode. I was able to turn off Auto Reboot so I could read the blue error screen. Here is the full text:

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you´ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check to be sure t hat you have adequate disk space. If driver is identified in the top message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters. Check with your hardware vendor for BIOS update. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

I have checked the drivers and found no issues. Then I created a fix CD and ran the Recovery Console procedure SEVERAL times until the end without problems, but it still does not fix this particular error. I still cannot start in normal mode, my computer keeps restarting and I still get the blue error screen.

What else do I need to do to get it up and RUNNING  in normal mode again?

Thanks for further assistance. What is your operating system including service packs? What if anything had you changed (added/deleted) in hardware or software coincident to the occurrence of this issue? Can you relate to any computer activity that you had just executed immediately prior to the 1st occurrence of this fault? truenorthMy OS is XP (home), SP3. I did not add hardware/software before it occurred, however, there was a brief power cut due to pulling the wrong cable. Before that, it was running OK.

Thanks. Quote

A system thread generated an exception which the error handler did not catch. There are numerous individual causes for this problem, including hardware incompatibility, a faulty device driver or system service, or some software issues. Check Event Viewer (EventVwr.msc) for additional information.

...there was a brief power cut due to pulling the wrong cable. Before that, it was running OK...
Try booting to "Last Known Good Configuration".  Keep tapping F8 just before start of Windows XP splash screen. This is sometimes a warning too
  1. Check all your hardwares (especially Hard Drive) and other expansion cards are properly punched in to the system.
Then try last known good configuration by pressing f8 method mentioned in previous reply.
Then install a good security software if haven't done already.

  2. If these don't work, try booting in safe mode again by using f8 key method. Go to "Start" and "RUN" and type in the bar "msconfig" and click on the "Start Up" tab. Try to uncheck the programs you dont need at startup. Scan your computer. And try rebooting it normally.
 3. If still this doesn't work, you got to give your system into professional hands, so they can check it further.
Sometimes this is the alarming sign of a dying hard drive as it suddenly stops and shows you the failure message. Hope for the best
I have just checked Event Viewer, there is nothing in there pointing out to that error. I also tried rebooting to last known good configuration and System Restore. Still doesn´t work. I also got security software on. I have also disabled all programs at start up and tried rebooting normally and again to last known good configuration. Cables and devices are OK. Still doesn´t work. Thanks for all your help, guys.Any yellpw ??'s in Device Manager ? ?I have just run a diagnostics TOOL, it showed me there is a very bad/damaged partition, which might explain why all we have tried so far did not work. I need to fix that partition, not an easy task because it seems to overlap with other existing partitions. I probably need to backup all data/programs and reformat my HD.Thats what i would do...

HDD errors cannot be fixed...chkdsk will however mark bad sectors so they are ignored and no longer used. You´re right. The next challenge, though, is that I now get the error message: "Bad boot sector, enter system disk and press Enter" or "Bad boot sector, press any key" and I can no longer get into Safe Mode , so it may take a bit longer to fix it than originally planned.I'd replace the HDD if it were me...Well, if I manage to get it fixed this time,  I may eventually, once everything is backed up  properly.

Solve : password protecting files.?

Hey, I need to know how to protect some of my folders on my COMPUTER. I want to be ABLE to set a password on them so that only i can open select folders. I have other people living with me that use my computer, and i don't want them messing with my personal documents. If anyone KNOWS a site that they trust that i can download a "password protector" or something, then that would help out alot. (I run with windows XP professional if that helps)As "Administrator", you can "Password protect" your entire system. Set up accounts for each USER or one account called "Guest" that anyone can use. They won't be able to get to your STUFF in My Docs or any other Folders.

Solve : Delay in opening applications?

Answer»

Im currently using XP pro, and sometimes on a fresh restart after a while of letting the computer load everything I try to open IE and the hourglass cursor shows loading but nothing happens, i try again and again, and maybe a bit afterwards the 5 windows open up. I dont see why that happens when im not using any cpu or running an programs. plus i wait till it loads. Just happend to me today and has happened before in the past, maybe someone can shed some light on this for me. What service pack are you running for XP?  Also you might want to check for adware, and virus on your computer.Do you have ANY software that will help you erase spyware? It sounds like you might have spyware running in your system, so that could be manking your computer slow.... Try deleting the spyware...

[glb]Flame[/glb]i did run Ad-Aware on my computer BEFOREHAND and all it found was Tracking Cookie's which i promply deleted. Ran an online virus scan and checked out clean. Computer working finr now, but i wonder why it happends every once in awhile.  Have you installed any NEW hardware lately?

[glb]Flame[/glb]yes a 120 Gb hard driev that worked fine. Just today i got that delay.Try defragmenting your computer. This process rearannges data on your harddrive so it is more efficent.

Do you have any extras installed for Internet Explorer? Like toolbars etc? They take up loading time and I have no extra toolbars; I FIND them unnessisary.

Running an online scan is no substitute to having your own virus scanner. Lots of online scans come up with false results to scare you into using their software. If this result came up empty it's possible you've used a geniune scanner, but better safe than sorry. It's best to use widely used and therefore tried and tested programs, such as AVG anti-virus from www.grisoft.com

You could try using the Firefox BROWSER from http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ I use it as I find it more efficent and secure.

You could have lots of programs schedueled to start. Look at the taskbar at the bottom right, next to the time. Do you have lots of icons loaded there? You might want to tell unnessisary ones not to load up at startup. USUALLY you can reload them yourself in Windows if they are needed. If they don't provide such an options, you can disable them from start > run > msconfig > startup. Look for their entry and REMOVE it. Make sure you don't remove anything needed by your computer, such as explorer and systray. Apart from needed system programs, a firewall and virus scanner are the only things I have schedueled to start up.Only toolbar i have is the Google toolbar that has never caused me grief in the past. As for programs in startup im pretty picky about that so my system tray is empty on startup lol, in exception to my video cards icon . Problem has stopped now but just caused me the concern the 20 mins it happend. I will however defrag my computer C drive bc i transferred a lot of the data to my secondary slave. You should also allow a firewall and virus scanner to load.Well, it sounds to me like you have a lot of registry programs running in the background.... I have a program that COULD help if you are interested...

The symbol mentioned tells me you may have listened to those songs at one point in time but not DLoaded them...therefore they aren't in the library...

Or wherever they were located has been changed. This can happen if they were on an external device of some sort when played and added to the library, then the next time the device was inserted, it was assigned a different drive letter. Or the device isn't present. Or the folder or file name was changed since it was added to the library.

Basically, something has happened that said file(s) are no longer where the library EXPECTED them to be.None of these songs were on an external drive and they were all in the library for a  length of time and had been played often.  If they were not from an "authorized" site could there be some kind of time limit on them?  Some are from Limewire, others from Youtube Music. From "Start-Search" TYPE in the name of a song that has "disappeared" and see what happens. If you find one you may find them all.truenorth Quote from: halda on April 29, 2012, 07:35:54 AM

Solve : DELL Laptop, No restore cd, messed up partition?

Answer»

Ok, I have a new dell LAPTOP(1150)  and tried to hook it up to the home network.
On the netwok already is the following
1.)  Belkin 4 port pre-n router (works great with other computers)
2.)  Two Laptops, xp on both machines
3.)  One desktop downstairs
All of  the above have wireless connections and work great,(as they don't have sp2 yet, more on that later

When i got the dell and tried to connect to the wireless network it said  "limited or no connectivity"  and it would not connect. Then i tried to do a repair and it did not display anyresults.
So then I realized that the laptop had service pack 2 on it and this has been an issue on many computers with noone knowing the correct fix for the "limited or no connectivity" The problem with the new dell is that the machine came with sp2 and there is no way to remove it.
I decide to try a copy of windows xp pro (without sp2) on the machine but after dealing with loading all of the drivers on the machine i want to just get the laptop back to its original configuration. THE PROBLEM IS AS FOLLOWS. somehow when i loaded win xp pro it messed up the recover partition that the synmantec recovery partition uses by hitting f11 with ctrl key held down  at computer boot up.

So HOW CAN I GET THE COMPUTER BACK TO ORIGINAL CONFIG??

ANY HELP WILL BE MUCH APPRECIATED AS I NEED TO USE THIS LAPTOP VERY SOON.
THANKS SO MUCH AND I HOPE YOU CAN HELP MEshday.....The laptop is new and must be under warantee......so why not contact Dell for the solution . The problem seems to be theirs so why wouldnt they rectify it for you.

Solve : Re: "Ghost" Files?

First of all scan for viruses before anything else.

If they are torrent files, make sure the program that uses them (bittorrent?) is closed. They could be incomplete downloads perhaps?

Try to delete the files in safe-mode. Restart the computer and keep pressing F8 until you get the boot menu.

Perhaps the all-seeing eye on your DESKTOP just doesn't like you? Novus Ordo Seclorum, as it likes to SAY. Ok SCANNED for viruses and no good there. And they aren't torrent files, they are some wierd replica that my computer created when i DOWNLOADED a torrent file without its extension. I also TRIED the safe mode thing and it didn't work. I need like a program that will delete wherever it is on my hard drive that is saying there is a file there despite the fact there isn't. my old hp craptop boots so quick - ( i measure boot time by how many times the blue bars slide ACROSS during the xp loading screen)

my laptop does it in like 5 slides.

bios has quick boot ENABLED
i disabled page file dumping on shutdown
disabled all startup prorgams and services (non windows)

enabled boot defrag in regedit

got rid of all unused porgrams and files, and i am malwayre free and have good performance...

what else can i do?

cuz tbh, my craptop has a intel centrino, and is old as heck

this desktop has more ram, a p4 2.66ghz and a radeon 9600xt 128mb

what else can i do?

thanksIs this really important to you? Does it really matter how long it takes to boot? If it does, you can do the following:

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have IDENTIFIED the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.
I go make coffee when i power up the 3 PC's i run.I just got this program called "bootvis"

It "optimized my settings"

Solve : jpeg banner added to emails?

Answer»

I would like to know how to ADD the attached banner in-line at the top of my emails, new and forwarded preferably permanently, but manually each time is OK.  All input is appreciated.

Jim

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]What are you using for email? Some web-based email or computer-based email program? Who handles your email?Put it in your signature line.I use Yahoo MAIL, and the attached banner is included here.  All input is appreciated.

Jim

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Mail Options/Signature....copy paste the image.Hey PATIO - thanks for the input.  My banner is a JPEG and I can't add copy/paste it to the signature box as it seems to only want text or a link someplace.  Post it to a site such as photobucket...then paste in the DIRECT link URL...

Solve : computer needs to be rebooted twice?

Answer» HI evry1!
I am having this problem from a month now. My COMPUTER hangs in the first boot and then needs to be rebooted again. After 2nd reboot it works NORMALLY. This happens every time i switch on my computer. Plz help. What is your computer? The more information you can provide, the better. What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

At what point does the boot process hang?

What happens if you boot to safe mode - does that work properly? My computer does this too - before Windows boots, and during the computer's self-test.  I often hang up there, but every time when I turn off and back on, the second time always boots fine.  I see no other issues and use the comptuer all the time without problem.

My advice to you would be to keep the computer in standby (sleep) mode when not in use - then when you do go to turn it back on it should not have this problem.  If you do need to turn off and restart, just be aware it may need to go through twice. The topic heading suggests two "re" boots are needed, but the OP's post sounds more like a failed first boot followed by a successful one. There is a COMMON thing called the "cold boot problem" and very often a failing or overloaded PSU is to blame.

Solve : Downloading pictures.?

Answer»

When I try to download pictures it gives me only 2 types of options to SAVE them as, art or bitmap. Then when I try to open them it will say, unable to open try using internet explorer to open. I want to save them as j-pegs but it won't give me that choice. Any ideas?Alright.... First, save as either, and save them to your desktop. Next, go to paint (in the accessories menu). Open the image that you saved..... Next, click file -> save AS -> on the bottom of the save window that pops-up, click the arrow, and scroll until you see JPEG. Click on JPEG, and hit save. This SHOULD solve your problem...

[glb]Flame[/glb]It won't LET me open the picture at all.vancoors.......What O/S are you using ? Has this just started ? Have you tried deleting your temp internet files ?
What happens if you right click on one of your pictures and choose open with ...........and then select ....say paint . will the pic not open ?

let us know

dl65  I use Windows XP. I always run DISK clean up to get rid of temp. internet files. I think this started after I had to reinstall Windows but I can't be POSITIVE. My question is why does it only give me the options of saving a picture as art or a bitmap and j-peg is not in there? It won't even let me go to save target as area when I right click on a picture.  Your problem MIGHT be with IE rather than windows. IE has some security problems with certain image types and MS skirted the issue instead of fixing it. Try using a different browser to download the images.

Solve : writing a simple batch file to shutdown pc in x minutes?

Answer»

Hi - I currently have many xp shortcuts in a folder that ALLOW me to shut down my pc in x number of SECONDS   For example I'm using C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -f -s -t 2400   in a shortcut to shut down in 40 minutes.

I'm trying to write a batch file that will prompt me for the number of MINUTES in which the pc should shut down.

Can some one help me fill in the BLANKS here - I don't know what I'm doing...  thanks, Jami

echo off
echo Minutes until shut down?
echo.
rem enter minutes press - then hit enter
set /p min=[promptString]

rem multiplies minutes by 60 for seconds (sec)

rem drops the product into the shutdown statement
C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -f -s -t sec

CODE: [Select]echo off
echo Minutes until shut down?
echo.
set /p min=Minutes:
set /a sec=%min%*60
shutdown -s -f -t %sec%
