Your subject should read "Desktop Computer USB not working correctly ".
Have you tried all the ports in the back?yes samething every portDoes it show up in Disk Management ? ?
Have you tried re-installing the desktop chipset drivers ? ?no i havent should i try that? remove them from device manager?

perryHave you tried connecting other external devices such as a memory card READER, webcam, mouse or keyboard? How about reinstalling all usb host/controllers and then rebooting? When I start Windows XP on my laptop, INSTEAD of coming up in english, all the information appears in what seems to be "wingdings", not English.  All information on the desktop appears this way, including all toolbars.  Programs themselves display properly.  Is there a way,l short of reinstalling windows ( and probably losing EVERYTHING on the computer) of correcting this?rbeaty.....Hummmm is this something that has just started ? Did you have any viruses pay you a visit ? If your certain you have no viruses .........Have you tried using the last known good configuration ( restart and tap the F8 key repeatedly ) then select the last good configuration .

let us know how you make out

dl65  does this happen if the laptop is connected to the mains power  adapter??Yes it was connected to the AC power supply.  I did TRY to restart with the last good configuration - no good.  THANKS for the suggestion though"short of reinstalling windows ( and probably losing everything on the computer)"

You won't lose anything if you don't format. It will overwrite your Windows system files only. But back up just in case.

Solve : BACK UP PROBLEMS?

Answer»

Hello !!!

I am having WINDOWS XP  PROFESSIONAL SERVICE PACK 3.

If I BACK UP my local disk(c:) and then format it.
Then can I get all the programs in the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS back when I restore them??

If you have any solution PLEASE mail me to email address removed by Allan

hoping a very speed reply.............No. Programs will need to be reinstalled. One thing you can do is back up your program install packages, and then when you reformat, you can PUT those back on easily.

Normally when you download a program/file from the web, it will GO to your downloads folder on your computer.  If you check there you should see a good number of program install packages.  You'll have to re-run the installs, but it will save having to track EVERYTHING down again. The whole Idea, of backing up your C: partition, as STATED in the original post, is to never have to reinstall your programs and data in case of a Hard drive crash.

A good backup program, like Ghost or Acronis True Image, will basically make a 'SnapShot' of your C: partition, so if something happens to it, you can just do a 'Restore' of your backup Image File and be right back in business.
For that reason, it's a good idea to do backups OFTEN, like once a week, if you have a tendency to add programs or data files often.

Backup Image files should not be on the main Hard Drive, just in case it Crashes.  A second internal drive will be the fastest, when making backups.  An external drive, offers better protection, but is MUCH slower.  DVD's offer the highest level of protection, but are by far the slowest.  But they can easily be taken "Off Premises" for the ultimate in backup protection.

Cheers mates!
if i use this Ghost or Acronis True Image  processes can i get all the add/remove programs backed up??

thanks in advance .....Yes.backup is a good habit. it enables you out of much trouble.

Solve : Do I have 32 or 64 bit WinXP??

Answer»

Following MS instructions, when I go into Control Panel System PROPERTIES I see "AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual" which I think means 64 bit. But, when I go into System Information, I see x86 Process0r which I think means 32 bit? I am confused - please help. Thanks.Good question. You have 32 bit CP running on your PC.
But just to be sure:
How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating systemx86 processors come in 32 and 64 bit VARIETIES. An Athlon 64 is an x86-64 processor. There are other types of 64 bit processor, such as Itanium. Anyhow, that has nothing to do with whether you have 32 or 64 bit Windows. An x86-64 system can run either. Check it like this: go to View System Properties in Control Panel. Click the General tab. The operating system is displayed as follows: for a 64-bit version operating system: Windows XP x64 Edition Version < Year> appears under System. For a 32-bit version operating system: Windows XP Version appears under System.

For example here is what you see if you have XP 32 bit:

Looks like I have a Win 32 bit system. When I go to MS to download MS Essentials, they give me TWO file choices: one for amd64 and one for x86. Which one is right for me? I originally installed MS Essentials so long ago that I do not remember if I was given this CHOICE. Thanks. Quote from: artbuc on May 22, 2012, 02:32:58 PM

amd64 is the 64 bit version - x86 is the 32bit version that you want.

Solve : Lack of malware.?

Answer»

Windows XP Pro Corporate Edition.

Since early December 2009 as a trial I have been running various pc's, generally old stock, without the use of any malware protection, no anti-virus or third-party firewall and with the internal firewall turned off.   The pc's are connected to the internet via a rather slow dial-up service.

Regular scans have never detected malware of any kind although I had expected visitations from the common parasites.  Could it be that the Corporate Edition of XP has some special built-in protection?Absolutely NOT. I use the same O/S on an XP machine SP3.It is my principal machine.I always have Avira free running (and updated). Within the past week i downloaded and installed Malwarebytes free ran a scan and there were 265 "items" detected. Now to be fair probably 90% of them were i suspect cookies (as they were not automatically ticked for removal--which i did anyway) but there were a very significant number of trojans. If i were in your shoes i would change your status on the computer to install/run an Anti Virus program (only one) and just for curiosity i would download Malwarebytes and run a scan. If it does find bad things i would then recommend running a scan on a regular basis. The "corporate " edition of XP is no DIFFERENT than the regular issue only in the licensing part.truenorth Quote from: truenorth on May 21, 2012, 05:03:57 PM

Malwarebytes is updated/run regularly, the only things it has ever reported as malicious software are the two PUN entries identifying the registry entries for the Security Center due to there being no antivirus and firewall running.   Why the MBAM folks decided to call these malicious is beyond my understanding.

Interestingly if I install XP Home or non-corporate XP Pro and run them without protection, infections are a CERTAINTY.

It was also my understanding that the only change in the Corporate editions was the licensing.

FYI the hardware currently in use (1) An AOpen mobo which shows a bios banner stating that the system is Y2K compliant, Celeron processor 734 MHz and 512Mb ram and (2) an elderly Compaq Evo N1020v laptop P4 processor 2.00GHz and just 224Mb ram.

Thanks for your input.Malwarebytes is not a full-fledged anti-virus.

You don't generally get "visitations" from a virus online unless you're visiting somewhere or downloading something that is risky. They can also come through email attachments, flash DRIVES, etc.

However, people sometimes inadvertently open things they shouldn't or visit a bad site by mistyping the URL or this or that. It happens. If there isn't anything important on the computer, you might be ok. I still wouldn't recommend it.

Surfing the net without AV or Firewall is kind of like tossing your parachute out of the plane first, then trying to catch up to it as you fall. While it might be a cool stunt, done enough TIMES will likely end up in you not catching the parachute.

I'd bet that if you installed a full AV program (like Avast!) and ran a full scan of your system, it will find threats that MBAM missed.

It doesn't matter what version of Windows you're running, running without AV, infections are a certainty. Quote from: quaxo on May 22, 2012, 01:00:33 AM

Solve : computer(xp) won't boot in xp CD?

Answer»

I've got a windows XP pro CD and I want to install it on my old computer. The problem is that my computer won't boot from the CD. I already changed the order of boot in BIOS and I know Cd's COME first because I tested it with another CD. I also know the CD itself works, because I tried it on my other computer. So I don't know what the problem is.

The computer used to RUN on windows 98, but then some guy (I don't know who and I won't be able to contact him) put XP on it, but it's in French and not a genuine version. Basically I just want to reset the whole computer in Dutch XP. Anyways the processor is a Intel Celeron 601 MHz, with 256 MB RAM, 14.3 GB hard drive. I'm not sure what kind of other specs you need, so just ask and I'll try to find the info. There are 4 possible reasons a system won't boot to a cd / dvd:

1) The disc is bad or not bootable
2) The drive is dead
3) The OPTICAL drive is not the first device in the bios boot order
4) You need a new battery on the moboLet me add one more item to the list..
Sometimes a genuine XP CD will not boot because it is worn. It has tiny scratches that prevents boot up. It is possible to correct this.
Using a better computer, try to make a good COPY of the install CD. For some reason the copy software is able to correct read errors and write a perfect CD.

Solve : Reinstall xp from windows 7 upgrade??

Solve : Not a valid Win32 application nerror question?

Answer»

Any hope here?
I am running XP pro with all updates.  I am running into a problem trying to download the latest Firefox browser and an antivirus software program.  I keep encountering the "Not a valid Win32 application" message.
Am I stuck in the last CENTURY or is there a way I can upgrade my system to a 64 bit OS?  ThanksYou need to download the 32-bit versions of whatever software you're trying to install if you're running a 32-bit OS.

If they are 64-bit installers or if the 32-bit installer is a corrupted or incomplete download, you will GET this message.Thank you quaxo.
Appreciate the information.
Unfortunately the latest web browser from Firefox does not give me a CHOICE as to which os version I can download.
Same with the AVG file I am trying to download for virus and malware PROTECTION.
I found the post that proceeded mine about how to determine which type of system (32 bit or 64 bit) to also be very informative.
I may be at one of those crossroads with respect to investing into a newer pc.
Thanks again for your insights.

Solve : Repeated Updates?

Answer»

I just finished installing "Security Update for .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2518864)" and "Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2572073)" but now it keeps popping up asking me to download and install the updates again. Any ideas why it would be still doing this?i'm having the EXACT same problem.
also running XP.
i've never had any problems with Windows Updates before.
- i'm NOT running a server, by the way. i installed .NET some time back; an app i wanted to use wouldn't work without it.
- if anybody knows anything about this... (Thanks in advance.)
This just happened to me a couple days ago on an OLD Windows 2000 laptop.  I thought it had something to do with Win2k.  I uninstalled all .NET since it doesn't need them.  Search for the .NET CLEANUP Tool.
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspxExcept I need .NET to run a whole bunch of applications. There seems to be a bug with these updates. What I've done is install them, reboot, and then hide the updates next time they appear.I've seen the same things...Has everyone's problem with this been fixed?
Microsoft supposedly fixed the thing:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/bradley/archive/2012/05/22/net-update-problem-from-this-morning-should-be-resolved-now.aspx

- Computer_Commando:
i'm still considering running the .NET Cleanup Tool - no issues of it that you know of? SYSTEM INSTABILITIES afterward, etc?

Thanks.
Updates bugged me the first time after I restarted my computer, but it seems like they're all gone now.Not sure. Last night I installed a whole bunch of low priority updates from the MS website. This morning I still had the yellow icon but this time only 1 update (KB963093). I did a custom (vs express) install and I got a prompt to restart my computer. This is different because yesterday I wasn't asked to restart. I'll report back later. Quote from: throckmockton on May 21, 2012, 06:26:57 PM

Solve : drive question?

Answer»

;DHi Well now after installing my new hard drive along with the old one my next question is the old hard drive is c drive and not much disk space for loading software or installing hardware. my new hard drive is in E drive which has a TON of disk space so when loading stuff should I be installing it on the edrive so it loads CORRECTLY It's kind of your choice....

[glb]Flame[/glb]o.k. so I can use both then separate from each other.  Or is that is how it works anyway? What does the defragmenter do.  Does it compress files for more disk space? or does it delete them in the disk management on windows.     you can download and install programs on your e drive cause i did the same thing and i defragmenter it should list to drives (c,e) defragment your e drive the same as you would the c drive.  defragmenter moves your files that you use the most so they load faster and checks your disk for errors and dammaged data ;DWow cool, Was able to delete my HOME studio 2004 and RELOAD on the e drive with the Western Digital 120Gb new hard drive I installed. Now the Home studio works. It even has it own latency fix on it but will see how that works when I try recording with it later tonight. Thanks for your input which I always find that helps here. it wont autodelte history....that is...tools/options/delete history....

it simply stays there

theonly way i can delte is to hit thehistoryicon and manually ..one at a TIME...delte them..

any suggestions as to why?? and how i can fix it please???

I also have zdelte on my puter, and this also dosent work..

I also CANT auto delte cookies..

I have clear history at 0....and have the empty internet temp files checked in advanced options...

it is as if there is checked somewhere to hold the history???

hope some one can help me..as it is driving me crazy..and if it is a install PROBLEM..i want to reformate sooner rather than later..

ohh btw...I have uninstalled and re installed office...for a problem with the email (outlook)

thanks all

mumI'm not sure what the problem is? If you want to clear history etc you will need to do it manually. What is the problem with the cookies?

To clear, close all open Internet Explorer windows, go to start > settings > control panel > Internet Options > delete cookies, delete files including offline files, clear history.

If you want the computer to stop saving history etc, then set the history days to record to 0.Hi there Neil

thanks for your reply, and what you are saying is what i do  BUT

what i am worried about is that this is a bad install or maybe a bug and it will cause me problems down the track...

i dont want to re format if it is a simple case of checking or uncecking a box somewhere

anyone know the answer please?

if its still under warranty TAKE it back to were you bought it you shouldnt have to REFORMAT a brand new computer just to delete your history and cookies ?

Solve : cleaning .tmp files, but finding .exe?

Answer»

I have windows 98 and it has been running very slowly.  I have completed all tasks suggested on this site, but am stuck... When I do a search to delete .tmp files, it comes up with many .exe files.  As I am a computer dummy, I am scared to delete them as I get the message that says deleting them MAY cause programs to no longer run.  What would you suggest? Thanks!Run a disk CLEANUP by doing te following.... Click start -> accessories -> system tools -> disk cleanup .... It will probably give you the same message, but it will not do anything "bad" to your computer. When it gives you the pop-up box, make sure that ALL boxes are checked... Just do what it tells you to. This SHOULD solve your problem...

If you continue to experience problems, try  restarting your computer. Then when i click on the x to close the error the control panel window comes up but never loads.Ok. Well, I hate doing it, but I have to do this when it is needed..... It sounds like you have a Windows problem.... Now, I had Windows ME at one time, and had many problems... Solve : Timing Application for other applications...?

Answer»

Alright here is my issue,

I have a sibling that is "addicted" to gta sa and "samp" and he will spend up to 7 plus hours a day and doesn't even realize it. He will use excuses and other things why he need to use the computer and once hes on it he wont get off. My question to the world wide web is, is there any program for windows that can:

a) keep time that a certain or all applications are being used.
b) schedule a time limit of use of that APPLICATION, and or others.
c) being able to lock it self out after that time limit is up.

My current system is running windows XP Sp3 (32 bit version) please help me with this issue. thanks in advance.  I'm not sure you could create/download anything that could be so specific but there programs out there that may work. Without looking to far in Google I found this:

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/automatically-turn-computer-shutdown-timer-windows/

May be that will give you a point to start from. Talk your parents into installing parental control software on the computer. This can limit computer and internet usage times and total time spent on the computer. Many of these programs can limit or block certain other programs and games from being opened or played too long.

There are pay versions (many pay A/V suites include this) and also free versions. Search Google for "parental control software" and you'll find tons of programs that do just what you're asking. Get your parents' permission before installing anything.Microsoft created an application a few years ago called Windows Steady State (formerley known as Shared Computer Toolkit).  I know Microsoft discontinued this product but I think you can still find it for download on a lot of Download sites.

The functionality you seek is for the most part built-in to Windows Vista and Windows 7 as Parental Controls. Quote from: Squashman on May 30, 2012, 06:03:53 AM

Microsoft created an application a few years ago called Windows Steady State (formerley known as Shared Computer Toolkit).

Steady State only has the option to block a program entirely, not limit a person's time on it. The OP WANTS to limit the time.

Likewise, Vista and 7 controls will only entirely block or allow a game/program, but not set a time limit. While you can limit the games by title or rating, you can't limit the amount of time one spends on it. You can, however, limit the amount of time the person uses the computer altogether, but this can be achieved without the OP UPGRADING to Vista or 7.The firsts step is to have accounts for each user on the computer. The user in question can not have full administrator profligates. That user will belong to a group with restrictions.
User Accounts overview
Otherwise, if you make some kind of thing to time out, he could just go into system settings and change it back. There aren't parental controls in XP anyway, so it doesn't matter unless they're WILLING to shell out for the upgrade.

What needs to happen is the parents need to step in and lay down some rules, which obviously isn't happening. The first thing should be talking to the parents about issues instead of taking matters into his own hands.

Solve : Can I stop a program from opening twice??

Answer»

Hi,
I have a program which  I want to be open at one time only. I have a program called popman. If I try to open it a second time it TELLS me 'open one instance only' How do they do they do that? They are probably checking the running tasks on the computer to see if it is already running.  How they do that depends on what PROGRAMMING language they wrote the program in. Quote from: Squashman on May 30, 2012, 06:05:05 AM

They are probably checking the running tasks on the computer to see if it is already running.  How they do that depends on what programming language they wrote the program in.

Another common method, which also works if the program file is renamed, or if copies of the same program are run from different locations, is for the APPLICATION to create a mutex while it is running. Other instances will also try to acquire that mutex and discover it is already in use, which they can use as an indication that the program is already running and ACT ACCORDINGLY. (If the program crashes the mutex will be closed as part of process termination)hank you for yur help

Solve : USB storage detected but the Drive couldn't be found?

Answer»

Hi all,

I was doing my homework in a computer room in my school.
When the homework was DONE, I PLUGGED in my USB flash drive (2GB) to the computer.
The computer said new USB drive was detected, so I doubled clicked my Computer, but I couldn't SEE
my USB flash drive.
I unplugged my USB drive and plugged it to another computer in the same computer room, but the strange thing happened again. The computer just said then same thing, "new USB drive was detected", but I couldn't see my USB flash drive.

I was wondering if the administrator had done something to the user permission that I couldn't see the flash drive.

Could someone give me some idea please.

Thank you.

Kitty.Check to see if it shows up in DISK Management after powering down and re-plugging it...SOMETIMES, windows takes a long time to recognize flash drives, because it has to find a driver for it, and depending on the brand, this can take a while. so maybe it was just that it was not getting the driver by the time you unplugged it.

Solve : Computer acting strangely?

Answer»

When I TYPE SOMETHING  there is a delay before the letters  appear. For instance, I'll type a few letters of a word, and then, the last few letters will not appear for a quarter second or so, and then they jump on the SCREEN.   The computer seems to be acting erratic in other ways also. The scroll BUTTON seems to have a mind of it's own.Question: is this a laptop or is this a desktop?

the letters not appearing for a bit, can be normal in windows, and just about every other operating system when the system has a large LOAD on it.

And a proposed solution to your scrolling issue: If it is a laptop, then most often then not on the newer models, the touchpad will have scroll areas on the sides to aid in scrolling. Maybe you are just accidentally contacting this with your skin when you type.

Solve : Restore Windows Xp Home?

Answer»

Gateway 507GR 3.0 200GB HDD 2.0GB  Ram Windows XP Home SP3

I attemted to use Slim Driver Free to update my drivers.  After using it, I had no sound.  After trying several other things to get sound, I used System Restore.  When System Restore FINISHED, I got a message

NTLDR is compressed
Press CTRL + ALT + DEL to restart

When I press CTRL + ALT + DEL to restart I get a beep but nothing else happens.  What can I do to restore my computer back to its normal condition?  Thank you for your help! NEVER use any 3rd party app to update drivers. Furthermore, drivers should only be updated if there is a specific reason or need to do so.

At this point you should probably try a repair installation

Boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option, allowing XP to install on top of itself. After completion you'll need to go to Windows Update and download & install all updates (except for hardware & driver related updates, which should never be downloaded from Windows Update - only from the OEM websites). Here is a clear tutorial on how to perform a repair install: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/138-how-to-repair-windows-xp/

Hello again!  I will GATHER my CDs and attempt this tonight when I will have more time and not be rushed.  Thank you very much for the help!Hello again!  I tried starting up using the Windows XP cd and had no luck.  I started up and the first Windows SCREEN came up and then the screen went blank.  I started up a second time with the Windows XP cd and pressed F2 trying to get into BIOS.  No luck.  I started up a third time with the Windows XP cd and tried F8 trying to get into safe mode.  No luck there either.  Is there anything else I can try short of my Mossberg 12 guage?   Will I have to wipe the hard drive and then reinstall everything?   Thanks for the help so far!You need to put the cd drive at the top of the boot device order in bios.Hello again!  I wasn't able to get the computer to go Bios.  I tried using F2 but I had no luck.  I got the Windows XP screen with F2, but when I pressed F2 I got no response and the next screen was all black.  I tried holding F2 down and it didn't work and then I tried pressing it over and over but still no response and a black screen.  Any suggestions?  I am at the point that I want to learn how to wipe the hard drive clean and resinstall Windows XP.  What will I need to do that?  Thanks!  Whatever key is needed to enter Setup (BIOS ) needs to be tapped repeatedly way before you see the Windows splash screen...try again.Watch the screen as soon as the system boots and you'll see a message that says "press ? to enter bios (or setup)". At that point, immediately press that key.

Solve : Where do your e-trash go??

Answer»

Please provide more info.... We aren't mind readers....

[glb]Flame[/glb]Delete emails... depends what program you're using. Internet history... various places. Do you want to clear it? Tools > Internet Options.e-trash? that's a very gerneral term. But one thing to keep in mind is that whatever you deleted on a computer, the information are not going away. Most people don't realize that.

Here is a BREAK down on different kinds of deletion:

1.) Deleting files on your computer: When you delete a file by HITTING the delete menu, all the computer program does is to cut off the header of the file that links to the file, but the actual data of your file is still there. (That's how the file recovevory programs works and how the FBI can trace down what criminals have on their computers.)  Unless you install a new program that write over your harddrive. But there are MILITARY grade software available-for security reason, to wipe out every single BIT of the data in a file, (meaning SETTING everything to 0s or 1s.)

2.) When it comes to email, it's even more complicated.
When you send an email for point A to point B, who knows how many hubs, routers and servers it has to go through. Each server en route will have a copy of your email, so even if you delete your email on your computer, there are many copies of your email in many different locations on different servers. And these emails can stay on the servers for years until someone on the server side decides to clean it up. (Again, that's how the FBI can collect information on criminal activities.)
On the internet, everything is tracable!

K.

I've heard of programs that can recover information after a format. Is/how is this possible?Hi Neil

Well, it takes a bit of understanding how file structure
works.

Generally, a computer file consistes of  two parts. one is the hearder, the header is where an application, such as MSWord, links to the file you want to retrieve. The other part is data--that's where your actual text etc.resides

When you format a hard drive, all the computer does is to delete the header part of all files but it dosen't delete the data part. When the hearder part of the file is deleted, the application you use will no longer be able to locate the file, but the actual data--your text is still there! Your actual data is there until you install a new program or save a new file that writes over it. It's a hit or miss scenario. And that's why when your HD crashs, it's not hopeless and that's how a data recovery programs work. The data recovery program retrieves your data and try to reconstructe the file.

A military grade deletion is a different story, what it does is actually write over the file with 0s and 1s at least three times to completely wipe out every bit of the of data in the file. That's what I call a clean up!

K.
Thankyou for your response Kaplan, but I already knew that and it has not answered my question.I find the topic very interesting. Where would one get a program that would  let you recover files from a formatted disc? I'd like to try this on one of my old hard drives just for grins.
Thanks, kro. This claims to do the trick:
http://www.recovermyfiles.com/
I have not used it myself.
How would such a thing work? Here is a very good program as well and it's free.
it' called pci_filerecovery, you can do a search on cnet and download it.

If you think your HD is in bad shape, first thing to do is not to install any thing except may be the file recovery program. and don't try to save any more files. This way it increase you chance t recover as much data as possible. Of course, it will never be 100% recovery.

Kerazer will kill all hard drive files???but this will recover them>.http://www.active-undelete.com/

most files that people believe that emptying the recycle bin is final##~not so they are held in the recycler bin folder which is hidden from the user~~as most files are...PC INSPECTOR File Recovery: http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/UK/welcome.htmThere is even an undelete command in dos.

Solve : Restoring XP Home backup (data only) to 7 Home Premiium??

Answer»

I have an OLD desktop with XP Home (SP3) that I'd like to backup my personal stuff (data and email) and restore-selectively-to my HP LAPTOP with Win 7 Home Premium. Both have DVD burners. The desktop has an 80 GB drive with another 80 GB drive setup to backup most data but I'd like to use a backup system to put this onto DVDs, then restore to laptop drive. I have all my computers on my home network and could possibly do it via network. I'd probably turn off the cable modem, leave the router on and disable McAfee to speed up the data transfer after UPDATING and scanning both the source and destination drives. No need to have anti-virus running after that checkup. I also have a question about using this laptop with a Sony analog Hi8 camcorder, but will probably post in the proper section.
Thanks for any and all replys. The 'My Documents' folder has all your documents, music, photos and VIDEOS.  Unless you use some other scheme for storing personal data.

E-MAIL is another issue. You will need to find a method of copying from Outlook Express, if that is what you were using.
You can Google on:
Copy Outlook Express to Windows Live Mail

Solve : Finding Recycle Bin from C: drive?

Ok so IM FIXING my friends PC and she says its terribly slow, and she needs a geek so i took the offer. This thing is slow and it has registry issues where i do so much as right click and it locks up on me. Anyways she wants a few things off of the computer before i do a back-up from the back-up partition dell has given. I connected her 80GB drive as a slave using a Ide to USB connection and copied all of her documents off. She ALSO would like all files in the recycling to be recovered.. Now my question is which directory is the recycling bin located in under the drive. I tried C:/recycle bin after enabling hidden folders but it doesnt show.... Both computers (hers and mine im using to recover) run windows XP SP3 any ideas on how to get the recyle bin files??? thanks.Try "C:\$Recycle.Bin". QUOTE from: comda on June 02, 2012, 07:59:33 AM

This thing is slow and it has registry issues where i do so much as right click and it locks up on me.
Not a registry issue. This is almost exclusively caused by crappy or broken Explorer Shell extensions. In this case (the right-click causing problems) it's usually a result of a broken Right-click menu handler extension.

you can enable/disable such extensions using Shell Menu View.

Its not the extensions issue its just slow like a turtle.... Not just the right click opening files or folders even boot up is slow..... Im trying to restore it to factorh settings. If you restore from the Dell PC Restore partition, it will erase EVERYTHING anyway.Yes i know that i have Already restored the computer and i did end up getting everything from the recycling bin. I simply gave the computer a good hour to sit and boot up then copied everything into a folder on the desktop and using the ide to usb connection and went into the douments and settings and copied that folder ocer to my externql drive. Thanks for your help and support in this issue.  Topic closed.

Solve : Windows XP (and other versions of windows) not installing?

Answer»

so, i have my dell inspiron 1526 that has ran windows vista before i went to the linux side. I eventually got into electronic music production, and FL studio, Reason, and other programs dont work in ubuntu studio. So i got my hands on a copy of Windows XP, and would like to run my music software in it, but problem is:

I put in the disk, it boots to disk, but the computer crashed about after the initial completion of loading files, or after you select a disk to install to.

I have also tried the vista recovery disk, same thing, Windows seven, Same exact issue

What irritates me is that i had planed to dual boot the computer, about half for linux, the other half for windows, but every time that i attempt to install windows, or TRY to debug the installation, it corrupts the master boot RECORD and linux (if installed at the time) will no longer boot, and i have to re-partition everything. This meaning, i can have no use of the computer unless i successfully install windows, or give up trying to install it.

What i see from windows (if it does not crash the system before the error message) Is that it failed to load a file. i cant tell what file, because it crashes after flashing the error.

I used gparted live to pre-partition the disks, into an ext4 for linux, and fat32 for XP, leaving some swap space for linux unpartitioned.

now what the confusing part is, is that linux installs just fine. and that any version of windows fails and crashes on the boot disk.2 questions::

Why not NTFS ? ?

Where is this copy of XP from ? ?I did use NFTS. its that i changed to fat32 to see if it was not installing because of the NFTS file system

The cd is the holographic windows OEM CD. The other CD's i've tried are the system restore disks of the actual computer.

I also tested out other CD's of windows, that were not restore disks for that computer, just to see if they would crash as well, and they did.

Linux CD's that ive installed from cononical all install fine, for some reason. Other live cd's run just fine. i still suspect the Windows cd's you are using because it doesn't make sense...Thats what i have been thinking as well, however, the disk is the Microsoft windows Professional version 2002, includes service pack two, the holographic print, with genuine printed on it, with the windows XP professional OEM software sticker with the 25 diget key.

the different CD's i have used to test all came from different sources. The only connection i see between the disks that dont work is that they are Microsoft windows.

The disk is not ALLOWING me to get to the point of entering the registration key, it crashes before thatAs i stated...it doesn't make sense...
Only thing i'd suggest if it is actually legit Win CD's would be to swap in another CD/DVD drive.

Also you may want to try the install with only 1 stik of RAM...Test the hard drive with the drive manufacturer's diagnostic:  http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 Quote from: Computer_Commando on June 07, 2012, 05:42:30 PM

I have heard of this story from another forum around, that the person who was suffering the same problems, called toshiba (the maker of the laptop) and toshiba said that the hard drive was fried. The strange thing is, why would it work for linux and not windows. Check this LINK from Microsoft - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314458 Quote from: jason2074 on June 07, 2012, 11:48:54 PM
Check this link from Microsoft - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314458

ok? i read through it, although, i have tried a dry install of XP (WITHOUT linux or other partition tables set aside for linux) and it still was unable to complete.

Maybe i need to try a different bootloader config or something. if the machine uses SATA drives make sure it's set to IDE compatible mode in the BIOS, too. From the MS link.
The Linux partitions have to be removed.
Quote
To install Windows XP on a computer on which Linux is currently installed (and assuming that you want to remove Linux), you must manually delete the partitions used by the Linux operating system. The Windows-compatible partition can be created automatically during the installation of Windows XP.
This has been mentioned before. Personally I have seen this problem, but I can not reproduce it on other machines. Just on one old  Dell computer I had.

Solve : Need help corrupt hard drive?

Answer»

Hi all,
I am really in a bind.  I have been trying to install windows 98, I got everything to work for the most part, but when I tried to get the modem to hook up, it crashed.  I pawned it off to the AOL install, so I was going to re-format the C:, re-install windows 98, and start over.  That was fine until I gambled on doing the MSSETUP that was on the d:  I changed my mind (apparently a few seconds too late) when the files started doing some sort of copying....  it wouldn't stop so I just hard shut down.  When I tried to turn it back on it says C:windows\himen.sys was missing or corrupt, along with DBLBUFF.sys, and IFSHLP.sys.  It looks like the dos command prompt is OK, but it won't let me format, or delete the anything from windows to start over.
Anything anyone can help with is MUCH appreciated!!
Thanks in advance, Tim
Tim,

If you have a startup disk then use this to access your PC and re-format your hard drive. Then begin the installation of Windows again.

If you do not have a startup disk try this site:-

Click the following link:
How to install Microsoft Windows 98.I too have LEARNED the hard way about FORCING a CANCEL of something a little too late. Make SURE you are entirely certain before doing an important system change again. Thanks a bunch guys!!!
Booting up with the boot disk was enough to get me past the errors and reformat!!

You guys rule!
Thanks again,
Tim

Solve : Cisco Linksys Wireless Router E-1000 --- Set-up????

Answer»

Hi there everyone. Looking for a bit of help with a set up which I think is pretty easy but I am not technical.

Here is my situation.....

I opened a small kids craft store which has no wi-fi. There is no computer in the store but sometimes I bring my small Samsung NC-10 Netbook with no CD drive (with XP) with me. We do have a router from our cable company.

My daughter and her friend would like wi-fi so they can use their ITOUCH/ipad for viewing YouTube and other things that require wi-fi. Figuring I needed a wireless router, I went on Amazon and did my research to find a good rated, but inexpensive one. I ended up purchasing the CISCO/LINKSYS E-1000.

My 2 questions....

1) How do I set this up? In other words, what plugs go in where? I tried a few "plug here, ethernet cable there" but I obviously do not know what I am doing.

2) Do I need to leave my netbook in the shop for the wi-fi to work?

Thanks so much for the help!!Please forgive a silly question but..... you do have internet access in the store, correct? Not a stupid question to me.

I have the triple play from Cablevision. (Cable tv, phone and internet access with a router) I bought wireless router so I can get wi-fi. Did I answer your question?  Quote from: MomNEEDShelp on June 07, 2012, 12:42:17 PM

...I have the triple play from Cablevision. (Cable tv, phone and internet access with a router) I bought wireless router so I can get wi-fi. Did I answer your question?
I think you mean "phone and internet access with modem".  2 questions:
Same modem for phone & internet?
Does the desktop computer at the store plug directly into the modem? You did. Just use an ethernet cable to connect the modem to the router and everything from there should be "plug & play" assuming the computers are wifi ready (I see there's a "setup disc" that comes with the router - go ahead and RUN that, but I'm guessing it won't be necessary)NEVER run those setup disks.  They are nothing but trouble.Sorry for the delay. I had to go to work.

Ok, so I think YES...phone and internet access with modem.

YES ....same modem for phone & internet. (From Cablevision)

There is NO desktop in the store. No need for one work-wise.

I am just looking to get my Ipad, Itouch and Netbook (wi-fi ready)

*************  I did use the ethernet cable to connect the modem to the router. I then tried to use my netbook but could not pick up a good signal. (The one I saw open had like 1 bar and was not strong enought to get me on the net)

Hope I am making sense. (Sorry again....this mom is not very techno) Quote
1) How do I set this up?
CISCO/LINKSYS E-1000 Manual and go to Manual setup for your wireless setup.
Quote
2) Do I need to leave my netbook in the shop for the wi-fi to work?
The router will be your devices' wireless access point if configured correctly.Hi there,

Thank you. I READ the manual. A bit tough when you don't know what certain terms are or what they do. I am still not up & running with it.

The manual states to put the CD in the drive. I only have a netbook that I sometimes bring to the shop. It has no disk drive.

Maybe I should say this....I am not concerned about security because the shop has no computer system. So, I am just looking for what wires to stick where to get wi-fi FLOWING thru the store. (Just need it so ipad & itouch receive w-fi signal) Is there any wire to device /wire to device easy set-up that will make this happen?Do you have a cable or phone provider for your internet connection? Did they provide you a modem? There is a modem, yes. Provided by Cablevision. I have the Triple Play with them. (Cable, Phone & modem)

1) Are you certain your hardware suppors XP?

2) If so, you need to install all of the appropriate drivers for XP (chipset, sound, display, etc)

Just a step further on Allan (no thunder stealing intended), in case you do not KNOW how to locate and install them, you need to locate either the;
Make and Model of your computer if it is a big name brand i.e HP, Dell. e.g Dell Dimension 2400
or
The Make and Model of your motherboard if it is a custom PC e.g Asus P8Z77

And then go to the manufacturer site and locate your product using their search functions to get your drivers. At this STAGE you will be able to tell if your computer is Windows XP compatible if it is listed as a Operating System in the list when it asks which OS you have installed for the drivers.

Solve : slow slow computer?

Answer»

What can I safely delete from the start up (ms config) without messing up my computer.  It is so slow. I have Windows 98defrag/SCANDISK/\ tools/ internet/options/ clear/history /delete files/  for a start........you cannot delete anything from msconfig........unless you use edit..you can disable programs loaded at start -up just un tick the boxex that are relvant to you......what are  programs are loaded at boot -up.Things such as explorer and systray need to be left in msconfig, as well as things for your firewall, virus scanner etc.

Look at the taskbar on the bottem RIGHT of the screen. This should have icons on it. They are programs which automatically load. Look at them and see if they have an option to disable load at STARTUP. If they don't look for them in msconfig. Most msconfig entries should have a file path with them. Eg c:\program file\quicktime\quicktime.exe (that is an example I don't know quicktime's real address) If you don't want quicktime to load automatically, disable it. It should be possible to load it in Windows if you need it.

As merlin_2 suggested, run scandisk and defrag. They are best run in safe-mode to stop them being distrubed. To GET in safe-mode, press F8 when booting up and select safe mode.

You can buy Diskeeper www.executive.com it is a GOOD defragmenter. It does not work in safe-mode but it does not get disturbed easily.

Solve : Unable to Print from Internet or Email?

Answer»

I have microsoft WINDOWS ME

I upgraded my Norton Anti Virus after downloading this latest version everything went to heck.

I finally uninstalled the product, buttttttttt

now I am unable to print off pages from the internet and my email.

Something has changed I'm sure, I just can't seem to figure out what or how to fix it....if it is fixable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

HummingbirdWhat percisely happens when you go to print? Error messages? Can you print from other sources, eg notepad?
Look in printers on the control panel. Any installed?1 last thing u can try is restoring everything to an earlier date (u do have winme right?)
stupid suggestion but usually it works
Hummingbird.......You say you upgraded your Norton AV ....Do you mean you upgraded from say NAV 2004 to NAV 2005 or just received the latest updates via Norton auto update ?

let us know

dl65  I downloaded (it was an upgrade) Norton Internet Security 2005....from the internet.

Had problems as soon as I did that.  Computer slow, computer would lock completely up etc.

I called the tech people for symtec and for Dell and they had me delete so many things.  I had no idea what I was doing.

After a frustrating week or two I decided to uninstall the Norton...That dear people is a story in and of itself.

I do not receive error messages at all.  I can get to the internet ...pull up all my favorites etc.  I can also read
and send email from my Outlook Express.

When I want to print one of my emails off I click on the icon...nothing happens..when I click on file and press print nothing happens.

Same think happens on the internet.

My wordprocessing program and my family tree program, those documents will print.

I'm such a computer idiot....I know something has changed.  But what?

I have tried everything I know how.

Thanks......
Hummingbird
so that means u tried system restore...right?Hummingbird.......Norton .....usually asks you to uninstall any previous Norton installs before you install a new Norton otherwise all sorts of odd things occur.
This upgrade was it from Symantecs site or did you obtain it from other scources ?
If all else fails you could probably use your system restore to get things back to NORMAL......HOWEVER you would not have the Norton download .

let us know
dl65  Well, Folks, I guess I need a new computer.

I downloaded my virus protection from Symantec....

I did remove my old virus protection first

I went to system restore....blank screen  I had it before because I used it.  After I deleted the new virus protection I lost it.

I went to control panel....blank screen (same as above)

I have requested a refund from Symantec and they have approved it.

Looks like I've lost soooooo much.  I was afraid of that.

The only programs that are working properly is my WORD processing program, my email and, as you can tell, I can get on the internet.

I have no idea what happened....Thanks for trying to help me.  I guess its a lost cause.

Hummingbird

In IE, go to file and click print. What printer is selected?Hi!

Well I went to IE and each time I clicked print my computer would lock up. I would have to restart my computer to get back to square one.

Then I went to Properties and couldn't find a printer mentioned.

Then I went to the start button, clicked settings and then clicked printer and is says hp desk jet 960 series.

I truly appreciate you trying to help me.

Hummingbird

did you try right-click on the webpage with your  mouse and use.....print option......ok?......do a search for c:\windows\options\cab\folder    scroll down the list till you come across the scanreg icon......next to it is one called SETUP if you clicked this icon it will re-install your system back to the first time you plugged your pc in.....no files lost..no disks required at all...........other options like scanreg/fix typed after the msdos prompt may work but my old mate norton does a lot of damage to a pc some will argue. you do need a anvir program on you pc however  freeones like anvir personal edition can be found  at majorgeeks.com ........and another tip dont use ie6 winme does not like it much.....Hi! Merlin.....

Thank You!!!  Thank You!!! Thank You!!!

I now have everything back and I can print.

I truly thought it was a lost cause.

Forever Grateful,
Hummingbird

Solve : Actions?

Answer»

I want to record a MACRO (action) that will resize a picture to 640 x 480 pixels and then save the file as the "original name - 640 x 480"  I was hoping this action would use the current picture's name and then append the "640 x 480" suffix to the end.  Unfortunately the macro uses the file's name that was open when I recorded the macro.  Does anyone know how to do this so the action will use the file name of the picture I am applying it to and not the one I recorded the macro with? What program are you USING to create the macro? Do you have a command in the macro that RENAMES the file which doesn't WORK or do you want to know such a command?

Solve : Shortcut to Desktop?

Answer»

How can I get a short-cut to direct me to desktop.

Thanks.Right-click on your desktop, put the POINTER over new, and hit shortcut. Next, when you are asked to set-up the new shortcut, hit browse, and double-click on the sektop icon... This SHOULD woek... KEEP in TOUCH...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Rita, the desktop is the screen that is displayed "underneath" all your other windows. You could try pressing the Windows key and M at the same time, to minimise (put away) all windows and SEE the desktop. You can get the windows back by selecting them at the task bar on the bottem of the screen. Here is the KEYBOARD shortcut to the Desktop.

Hold down the "Windows" key and hit the "D" key.

Doing it again will toggle you back to where you were.

Solve : Want to Recover Older Version of a File?

Answer»

I accidently saved over a file and now I can't access the file.  What I WANT to do is go back to the previous day and open the older file from the previous day.

I once used a program I BELIEVE that allowed me to somehow open an older version of the file.  I would lose any saves I made that day, but could still get the file open from the previous day.  Does anyone know what this program is or how to do this?  Any help greatly appreciated! :-/ Quote

I accidently saved over a file and now I can't access the file...

What program were you using when you "saved over the file"?
Actually, I was using NBALIVE2005.  What I did, was save over my season file with a roster file.  Now, I can't access my season at all.  It seems like all the data should be there, it is just called a roster file now as opposed to a season file.  Looking in the FOLDER, it looks just like another season file I have.  All of the same files are in the folder.

When you go to the Load/Save screen in NBALive2005, there is a button on the upper left that says Load File and one at the upper right that says Save Roster.  I meant to push the Load File button to load the Season, but accidently   pushed the Save Roster button.  This saved the Season file as a Roster file.  Now I can't open my Season that I spent a lot of time on.  Seems like there should be a way to open the season here.  Maybe edit a .dbf file?  Not sure.... 1. We all hate lectures but back up your data! Now you know why!
2. Are roasters and seson files different file types, if you know?
3. Can you actually see your old file but not open it or has it gone?
4. Did you overwrite/save over it or delete it? It seems a bit strange (and rather poor programming) not to present a CONFIRMATION message when overwriting files.
