Please help me!  
Here is what I did:

I opened up "word perfect 10", from windows XP home edition,  to GET into a 300 page, 90 some thousand word, document that I am working on. As always, there is a blank-page document, with CURSOR blinking. I clicked "file" button and, a list of document names came up at the bottom of the menu.
I, inadvertently, CLICK the save button from the menu instead of clicking the name of the document, from the list, to bring the doc. up automatically.
Here it got screwy:
The "saved files my documents" BOX came up. Instead of just closing the box, I clicked the name of the document i wanted.
Consequently, my 300 page document w/90 some thousnd words, turned into a blank [email protected]!!
I tried a system restore and it doesn't seem to CORRECT the problem. i did a new system checkpoint, that I'd like to undo but, no luck!!!

Can anyone out there help me. This is disasterous!
whojoe?It sounds like you saved the new blank document as your 300 page file? Did you not do a backup?Well, I really HATE to break this to you..... But...... System Restore does not effect your files..... Just software, and such.... If you read teh directions, you will see that none of your files will be effected.... Sorry I couldn't help...

It sounds like whebn i saved it; that is where the screw-up happened.
You know, it was so easy to do. I have back-ups but, I don't do them every day.
I don't understand why i can't do a system restore to an earlier day and, retrieve what I HAD then!

Isn't that possible? Oh, that's right; Burton said it will not affect documents.
Can I undo that "save" I did?

JoeNo, that isnt possible. As Flame mentioned, the restore option is only for system files, so your personal documents aren't concerned. Undo a Save is not possible. Looks like you'll have to restore your last backup and start again from there!!  

If there is a possibility, I would like to hear it too, because I am just an advanced user, no computer expert.Actually the Microsoft documentation is wrong on system restore and data files. Consider this:

1. Create a system restore point
2. Copy a file from folder A to folder B
3. Restore your system to the check point created in step 1

After restoring your system, your file will not be in folder B!

I found this out the hard way and it took days to realize what happened.

On XP Pro, there is an Undo of your last system restore. On XP Home, this feature seems to be left out.

When I remove the card from the reader and re-insert it in the camera I know how to delete all images in the camera and have no problem obtaining the NO IMAGE message on the LED.

But if I re-insert the card on the reader after taking more photos, the computer MONITOR will show not only the photos I have just taken but also those that  I had deleted as WELL ! Why?

When the camera screen shows NO IMAGE, does not that mean that the card is now empty?

Grateful if you can help an oldage pensioner.

7.  If I get you right, is this because the photos can be deleted on the camera but not on the card itself ?

I went to Dell's sight and attempted to find a driver for this specific COMPUTER...nada.

Went to a couple driver sites and still wasn't able to find a driver that'll work for the sound...

Mjy DAUGHTER has a fairly new Sony Viao desktop computer. She had Infected it with a boot sector virus. I tried many PROGRAMS to remove the virus with no luck. I ended up have to USE a program called DBAN to wipe the hard drive. In the process of wiping the hard drive apparently it erased the boot sector of the hard drive also. In the past on other computers I have been able to use a bootable floppy disk for any version of windows and then Install Windows XP. This computer does not have a floppy disk drive. I have been trying to make a bootable CD rom or a bootable flash drive to get the Installation process started, I have found many programs and tried but have noft had any luck with a bootable CD or a bootable flash drive. Can anyone help me in LOCATING a bootable CD for Windows XP that is easy for me to useThis solution involves Nero so don't know if it will help.

truenorthIf it is a genuine Windows XP CD, it should itself be bootable. No floppy or other bootable media is necessary. The fact that the computer is fairly new means it will almost undoubtedly support booting from a bootable CD, just make sure it's set as the first bootable device in the BIOS.

To prove I did following processes for several folders:
I didn't limit search conditions for each folder e.g. it didn't depend on size, time of last modification, type and so on.
I OPENED a folder. Then I did one of following actions:
1: I copied part of or whole name of a file or folder.
2: I copied part of a file's name which many folders and files have in common.
I kept above folder open to match with list of search results.
Then I chose the above folder for searching the copied text in other windows explorer.

Items in the folder didn’t match the list of results.  Of course I encountered some exceptions randomly.
what do you recommend?If the folder you created said file is in is still open Explorer will not see it...Exploer shows the file but if I search it with part of its name, the exploer doesn't show it. as before I said.

I want create a shortcut key for accelerating my work. I frequently switch between windows and click a button there. and I want design this by system registry. if it is possible, step by step help me.  That can be done in the registry. But there already are tested p programs that do that. Is there a resown you do not want to use a open-source program to automate your keystrokes?
These kind of tools fall into to areas:
1. A keyboard remap. An single keystroke can be made an alias for any other keystroke. Microsoft has this already in in all current versions of Windows
2. A macro recorder that plays back a series of keystrokes. It can be started by a function key not already assigned. There are opine-source programs as well as commercial programs for this.

Hi, I have 2 local disks (H) & (C).

Everytime I install a new program it installs into H drive which doesn't have enough space. How do I get xp to automatically put them into C Drive? You would think it went into C drive already, but it goes into H. I don't know how to change the settings..

Which drive is the system drive?

You can change the installation drive and directory through the installer for whatever program you're installing. There aren't many PROGRAMS out there that won't ask you or allow you to change the installation directory. If it doesn't ask you directly where you want it, it will sometimes have an option to do a "custom" installation or have a button to change the installation directory/folder.

Microsoft recommends not changing the default Program Files location. Apparently it can cause issues if you edit the registry value that controls the default location of Program Files. However, this doesn't mean that you can't just tell a program to install anywhere you want it.

The default location for Program Files is systemdrive\Program Files, in which normally the C: drive is the system drive. If you installed Windows XP with H: as the system drive, the only way to fix that is by reinstalling Windows to C:, making it the system drive. I have windows 98.  Degragment and scandisk restart at 1%.  I have run in safe mode w/just explorer running and it doesnt help.  Virus scan comes CLEAN also.  I have also NOTICED that NETSCAPE prompts me to sign on automatically and I get a work offline prompt often also, it MIGHT be related.  Any suggestions will help...thank you.

I have a wireless G network at home using a US Robotics wireless router. My HP laptop works fine. My daughter has a dell using a Microsoft wireless card.

This summer her laptop could connect to the internet with no problem. Now she shows a very good connection to the USR8054 network running at 5.5MPS, but cannot connect to the internet.

I ran ipconfig and it shows:

An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection: The DHCP CLIENT has obtained an IP address that is already in use on the network. The local interface will be disabled until the DHCP client can obtain a new address.

I have added a wireless print server since she used the network.

I am using a BELLSOUTH DSL connection to the internet.

Also the Local area connection says a network cable is unplugged. She uses a wired network at school.

What do I need to do to get her connected to the Internet?

Sounds likt there maght be a ip address conflict But I would do the following few things:

1.) Make sure all wireless hardwares are properly installed (hardwars as well as software drivers.).

2.) Is the DHCP server in the router enabled? If so, try to reset the router (in most cases, you will have to enter your broadband connection INFORMATION all over again.) and reboot all your PCs and print server, This way the DHCP server should assign a correct IP address to each PC and your print server.

3.)If that work, here is a bit extra TIPS, since you are on a WiFi connection, you might want to disable the DHCP server and assign each PC and print server a static IP address. This is a security measurement. (Prevent someone sitting outside of your driveway to sign on your network etc.)

It only happens when downloading torrents or perhaps on p2p APPLICATIONS such a limewire, otherwise its fine and i never get the blue screen while performing anything normal from IE, to AIM..

Im a running Windows XP Pro, and my network CARD is a LNE100TX version 4.

I've tried to update the drivers and cant seem to get one for XP from their support website. It seems to onyl have up to Windows.
People have been talking about this issue around the internet, but I haven't see this issue come up in person, but all I can say is check the status of your HDD, and run a virus scan on your computer...

I have a Windows XP laptop that froze last night and will not now boot to the Desktop.

I do not know if the hard drive is too badly damaged for me to be able to get the machine to reinstall the factory settings.

CHKDSK STOPS at 9% saying "FILE record 56308 is unreadable
                                              "File record 56309 is unreadable"

When I try Safe Mode I get a page of .sys files - white text on black background in the style :

"multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(o)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers

and then nothing further occurs.

Am I likely to be able to proceed with this laptop or is it "dead" ?

If I *can* reinstall the operating system from the special partition on the C: drive (I have no CDs pr DVDs) should I install anti-virus software as soon as the factory settings (from about 2007) are restored - or should I download all the Service Packs and updates that have been issued over the past few years FIRST?

I'm really wondering whether the CHKDSK output I got means that my hard drive is broken.

I don't know how to tell if I have a HARDWARE problem or a SOFTWARE one.

Could the CHKDSK stalls mean that Windows is corrupt by my drive might be OK ?I would 1st just try the process again. Then with appropriate cables you could remove the laptop HDD and slave it to another known working computer (desktop would be easier) and see if it can be accessed. If not then points to a failed HDD.truenorthDo you mean I should try to re-run CHKDSK on multiple occasions? Was I too impatient with it ? Is it supposed to repair the disk ?

My laptop is a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 with "ThinkVantage". It let me open a diagnostics program that RAN through my hardware (including the drive) and said there was nothing wrong with anything.

I don't know if these unreadable record segments could point to Windows corruption alone.

I think there may be a fuller version of the systems diagnostic. I should probably run that...There are many references to when/what/and how to use CHKDSK but i think this is about the best i have seen.There are 2 (maybe more) things that should be remembered when running it. Never interrupt the program while it is running and it does NOT necessarily correct all errors it finds. When you STATED that the computer stopped at a couple of error messages did you give the process any time to see if it would move on? Once errors are detected there can be a time delay while the error is corrected if it will be.

P.S. I have just noticed since posting that you have this same issue as a topic in the virus sub forum. It is proper procedure to only run a topic in one forum otherwise you may be not getting the best service that you could. Plus it only adds to the confusion to other members that may seek to help you as the continuity of the subject may be lost.I apologise about posting in two places. I didn't know whether it was COMPLETELY silly to think/imagine a virus could cause a computer to manifest what appear to be hardware problems (so silly that people might not reply). I don't know what hackers DO or what they CAN do if Malware has been placed on your machine. I didn't know if it is possible for someone to FREEZE your system and then muck you about in various ways. I rather assumed they could do ANYTHING.

When my boot-up finger-print reader wouldn't work I wondered if it had been disabled by someone who was trying to use a key-logger to obtain the machine's password. I didn't know if my lack of knowledge was making me OVERLY (and inappropriately) suspicious. I wasn't sure whether the warnings that Avast gave me were false positives or HIGHLY PERTINENT. It's confusing if you are distracted by not knowing when a red herring IS a red herring and what you SHOULD be paying the most attention to.

I have run my ThinkPad's "Rescue and Recovery" diagnostic tool in full now and it said the drive had failed three of four SMART tests. I have taken my confusion to the Lenovo Community Forum as I have no idea how to re-build a system that came with no discs.

I have a nasty feeling I was supposed to create Recovery DVDs while I could still get into Windows and that the option to make them is, ironically, NOT available in the Rescue area - even if the files are still all there and the diagnostics facility allows you to test CDs and DVDs !

Operating on Windows XP 2003 Home Edition Service pack 3

Okay, so I'm not exactly sure what's going on here, but as the title describes, my computer loses visual and goes completely blank from time to time. What do I mean by blank. I mean that the monitor is on, but there is nothing coming from the machine and going into the monitor. The monitor is still on though, and I know this because the speaker attached to it has  a little blue light in it that turns on when then monitor is on, and that stays on during the BLACK out. When it happens I can't get it out of it unless I force shut it down by holding the power button.

Most recently however, while I was booting back from safe mode, the monitor alternated from completely off to blank. The computer never FINISHED booting though, and I know this because when the log in screen appears, the fan turns on and the computer makes lots of NOISE. As the screen alternated from on to off, the fan never turned on, and even though I couldn't see what was happening, I had a feeling it never made it to the log in screen. I'm not going to jump to any conclusions but I think this might be some sort of system hang.

I noticed this start to happen about three days after I had forgotten to install my system updates for about two weeks and when I finally installed them this happened. I scanned my computer (most of it) and I didn't find any viruses, however it might have been invalid, as my antivirus avast! doesn't know how to update anymore because a blank screen happened in the middle of an update and screwed something up. Right now I'm on the wonky computer, as it is my only computer, and it's doing good so far.Could be a variety of things that could cause this to happen. Worst case scenario you graphics card is failing.I would suggest you try a few things to see if you can change the outcome.
1.temporarily disable your virus protection and see what happens.
2.remove all but one of the Ram MODULES and then one at a time try them in all the slots. Once you find a single one that (if) runs properly then ADD the others one at a time to try and find one that is possibly causing this.
3.Try another cable between the computer and the monitor.
4.Try another monitor.
5. Install another video card.
6.Do a restore on the computer to a date before the 1st instance of this occurrence.

I have a PC with WindowsXP Professional, and when TRYING to install the Microsoft Video for Windows 1.1 , i get this windows message:

this PROGRAM can't run in Windows NT   .

my question is:  what can i use in place of this program, or how can i enable the installation in Windows XP Prof?

Whenever i open a webpage (using FIREFOX and Windows XP) the text is so tiny it is almost impossible to read.  How to enlarge the fonts once for all (I think the TECHNICAL word is "by default0 so that i do not have to zoom in every time I open a page?  Many thanks IOSEFUSDepending whether you WANT to achieve this goal on ALL web sites or just in some instances there are different ways to increase the font size on web sites. If you only want to do it on pages that may come up that require you to do so you can press the "ctrl" key on your KEYBOARD and rotate your mouse wheel (FORWARD increases backward decreases). If however you want to do it for all instances here are the directions from Firefox for how you do it with their browser. The 1st method will work with all browsers the second will vary in method depending on the browser.

My friend has a eMachine Celeron 1.80 with Windows XP Home.  The computer was working fine.  Recently, he had a PROBLEM with scratchy sound when playing CDs.  In his attempt to correct the problem, he initiated System Restore.  Now the computer boots to the Safe Mode selection screen.  When Safe Mode is selected, the boot process proceeds as normal until the desktop appears.  The desktop is COMPLETELY black, with Safe Mode DISPLAYED in the four corners.  Only the mouse pointer is active.  Cannot initiate any commands with the keyboard, including the Windows Start key.  No icons, taskbar, quich launch bar or system tray display.  The same happens when Start Windows Normally is selected.  In that case, the Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition screen appears as normal.  The screen then goes completely black, with only the mouse pointer active.  Clicking the mouse, left or right, produces no action after either a Safe Mode or Normal boot.  The eMachine came with 2 Restore CDs instead of a Windows XP Home Installation CD.  The Restore CDs are of no help since they only operate in a Windows environment.  I tried using a Win ME Start Up disk to load the CD drivers an attempt to access the Restore CD with no success.  I also created an MS DOS boot disk in Windows XP on another computer.  Booting with that disk provides no help as well.  At this point, I am out of ideas.  Has ANYONE had this problem and found a solution?corndale...I had a similar situation with our son's pc 2 weeks ago .......he had been doing something and the result was exactly what you describe....What I did was to remove his hard drive and put it into one of my pcs as a slave , get into his drive and copy all his PICS and important files onto a cd ........Then I simply formatted his machine and re-installed Win XP pro .......I'm sure thats not what you wanted to hear, but thats what I had to do .

Sad to say, but it sounds like there is a problem with the MBR(Master Boot Record) on your friends PC. Normally, if you can boot to safe mode, use the commands chkdsk/f and chkdsk/r so that the next time
your reboot, the PC will fix whatever is wrong on the hard drive. But in your case, if you can't even get it to work in the Safe mode, I hate to tell you that you might have to reformat the HD and reinstall the OS all over again. By the way, if you can get a hold of a original Windows OS, use that instead of the eMachine disk(s).

Something's happened to my Windows Media Player. I DOWNLOAD Version 10 and that didn't solve the problem either. All I get is "INTERNAL Application Error". I've tried a few FIXES that I've SEEN elsewhere (this doesn't seem to be an uncommon problem) to no avail. Can anyone offer some advice? And thanks.What type of media are you trying to PLAY?  Also have you tryed to use an different media player like win amp?Have you tryed receiving allof your Windows Updates? Also, have you tried actually UNINSTALLING Windows Media Player, and then putting the new one in? Let us know...

This explains (not very CLEARLY) how to restore vmm32.vxd from dos, but it will only work if the FOLDER c:\windows\options\install or c:\windows\options\cabs is on your hard drive (you said the Windows DISC is lost).

On Sunday I tried to install DSL, it asked me to download the lastest verison of Internet Explorer, which I did.  No I can not log on to secured SITES (EG: online banking) , Restore SYSTEM, the control panel is no longer there (this is where I get ERROR 29: unspecified error).  I can not even open the HELP.  I have already CHANGED the properties to medium. And type dxdiag in the run box..how much ram have you got....have you tried REINSTALLING graphics drivers from the winme DISK?I want you to do two THINGS..... First, go to your device manager, find your video card, right-click on it, and hit update drivers. (Make sure that you are connected to the internet when you do this) Second, perform a Windows Update by going to http://www.microsoft.com .... There MIGHT be some updates for your video card there... Keep us posted...

I loaded my windows ME disc into my laptop hoping re-installation might fix the PROBLEMS. Now it has tried to re-instal but is hopelessly hung up at the setting up hardware window.Well, save yourself a LOT of time.... Trust me, I used to have WINDWOS ME myself.... Just go to the stire, and buy the FULL version of Windows XP. You would have to erase all of your files, but it sounds like you would have to do that for ME anyway... It seems like a lot of money now, but trust me... It pays for itself later. ME has a LOT of bugs in it, making it unreliable. XP does not have as many, so it is more reliable. If you follow my instructions, then you'll be fine....  

[glb]Flame[/glb]That will not help at all if it is a hardware problem, and the laptop might not support it. What problems were you experiancing? Is it possible to load up ME normally? Does it hang up at the new hardware screen every time? Did it first time you installed ME or was it preinstalled? Or you reinstalling from DOS or INSIDE Windows?Neil. It WILL help. That will tell us which way to go. He wants to FIX problems. Not start them all over again. I had Windows ME. I know how bad it was. He would be better off in the long-run if he switches now.

When I boot up my PC (windows 98 SECOND edition) it appears to be loading up properly untill it gets to the stage where the screen has my 'wallpaper' on it; just before the desk top icons appear
Then, about 3 times out of 4 it will freeze at that stage with a row of bright green vertical lines across the top of the screen, about 1/4 inch tall.
Sometimes , however the screen will go blank and then the PC restarts

Re the video card...how do I find out what sort it is?To find out what kind of video card you have, do this: click start -> run -> type dxdiag in the box -> and when a WINDOW that says DxDIAG pops-up, click on display. "Winldra has caused an Error in Unknown
Winldra will now close please restart"

When I close this message I can proceed as normal.

Does anybody know what I can do to remove this message during computer booting.

This message appeared when I had Windows 98 SE. I have upgraded now to Windows Me and still get the same message.

I have a Lenovo Think Centre.  It is part of an Kodak Kiosk with Win XP Embedded Installed.  The Pc boots up correctly into Windows but when I boot the PC into DOS it starts, runs for a minute and then shuts down.  Please note this is not from running the dos command prompt in windows. It is only when the PC is booted into Dos.

I have made a dos bootable USB and after booting into Dos, Ghost.exe is run from the USB.  Ghost then starts but within a few seconds the PC Shuts down.

It does not shut down when it boots from the Hard Drive into Windows XP so it is not a overheating problem.

Can anyone shed some light onto this matter and why running Dos would shut the PC Down

You are using the embedded version of XP.  Both the OS and the hardware are different from the average PC system  that most of us use every day.

If you NEED to backup data, use some other method. Ghost was not written for embedded computers.

I usually copy photos from my computer (having downloaded them from my camera) to MY PICTURES folder but today the window asking me where I WANT to copy the photos does not include the wording MY PICTURES.  Why?

Have tried to access MY PICTURES through MY DOCUMENTS and also through the DESKTOP (in the said window where I am asked where I want to copy the photos)) but no success. The words MY PICTURES will not pop up.

Meanwhile, the MY PICTURES icon still appears on my desktop.  The mind boggles !

GUZEPPI3 Things you can try if you haven't already done so.
1. Do a search on the computer using *.jpg (assuming they were stored as JPEGs)
2.If they ACCIDENTALLY were deleted check your recycle bin and if there click restore on the file.
3.Do a restore to an earlier date on the computer (before you BELIEVE you lost them).

GUZEPPICan't you just copy what you want to where you want using Windows Explorer?  Shortcut is Windows Key+"E" key.
Your profile & folders is located under Documents & Settings.  Look for your logon name, the folders you want are under that.
If i understand the O/P dilemma correctly on this. It is that the sub-folder of "my documents" entitled "My pictures" (like my videos/my music) has disappeared and he cannot access it any longer. He would like (prefer) to have it available so he can store his transferred photos to it. He also wants to know where the photos he had PLACED within it are given that he cannot access my pictures. My 1st 2 suggestions were based on trying to locate the photos and the 3rd was to try and get the my pictures folder back. The link is a method offered to also return the access to the my pictures folder.I had assumed the only existing (if indeed it does still exist) source of the photos was in the my pictures folder. However with the additional information provided by the O/P it seems the pictures do still exist on a removable flash drive. I have tried everything - increased volume in settings, bought a new microphone, asked 10 people already!!
I have c-media and XP.

My microphone records very softly the VOICE yet very loudly any taps or exhales. I NEARLY have to swallow the mic. to hear my voice but then I get heaps of loud 'pffts' by being too close. It shows about 40db while recording, on my wave editor I can pull it up another 30db but even this is not enough and the background starts to hiss.

I've eliminated the probs being the mic, the settings, the volume, so maybe its the c-media card/driver? I have CMI8738/C3DXPCI, there doesn't appear to be any known problems in this either. I have something called EchoControl - I have tried this both on/off but no difference.type dxdiag in the run and test for sound....it will report  sound problems....maybe the mic is faulty??hi merlin_2,
checked the dxdiag - no probs. Also this is my 2nd microphone with same results. We are really stumped!Open volumn control. In microphone setting, there should be an "advanced" button. Click it. I can't seem to get to the 'advanced' options button - it is inactive, only the 'playback advanced' button is active and sound from my speakers is great.

No matter how I try to enter the volume panel, the recording for the microphone does not have the 'advanced' button enabled!  

Wonder why? Is it my sound-card driver do you think? But all other aspects of sound is great, and when we use online talking the voice comes through loud'n'clear [so I'm told]  may we ask what mic this is......and what program do you use for it?Happy New Year!

I found, when CONFIGURING the microphone in the Control Panel Speech Recognition the voice only makes the yellow bar; yet BLOWING softly from the same distance registers red!

I had a problem with my Internet Service Provider's program in that it would START up then freeze, using 100% of my CPU capacity.  Installing a new version of the APP produced the same result.  I decided to restore my system to an earlier date by clicking on "Properties", but when I TRIED I got this message, " Run a dll as an app has encountered a problem and NEEDS to close."   I then tried through Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and when I clicked on "System Restore" I got the message,  "System Restore  has encountered a problem and needs to close."   Windows does not seem to be able to find rundll.exe or rstrui.exe.  I only have the OEM restore CD, and really am not looking to reinstalling all of the files on my Hard drive.  Any suggestions?what o/s have you got?? trojan scan run it!!Who is the manufacturer of your system? when i GO to play a song on my computer, the slider in the VOLUME control goes right down. I BRING it back up but if i click on anything, even a window i may have open, it goes right back down again. I left a cd in the drive and my computer wanted to reboot from this software..I removed it and WINDOWS started but why is is wanting to reboot from the cd drive?Inside the system BIOS is a list of devices the system shoud use to boot from. Your CD drive is higher on the list than the hard drive.

This is not a bad thing. While checking a DEVICE for boot media that is not there will increase your boot time (slightly), your order of boot devices will come in very handy if a serious problem arises.Like zzyzx SAID, your BIOS sees that there is a utilities CD in the drive, and usually, these CDs boot your computer, INCASE your computer can not boot by itself. It's nothing to worry about, it's PERFECTLY normal...

Alright..this all started the other day. I turned on the computer, and everything was normal. It did the BIOS stuff, the RAM stuff, then went to the Loading Windows 98 screen. It will keep doing this until a certain POINT, and then a BLACK screen pops up and says something along the lines of \"The following files could not be found. If you intentionally deleted it, then reinstall the program to get the files back\". It said that SYSTEM.INI was pointed to that driver. I don\'t remember exactly what it said, but it was something like that, and it listed the file

and said press any KEY to continue loading windows...



after this, it continues loading windows.  Then, it goes to the Log-on screen like it usually does. However, and error box pops up and says something about not being able to load NPROTECT.exe, which is associated with Norton Systemworks.(This is the error box that when you click details, shows that \"Invalid Stack Dump at...00ad\" stuff). Then, I will try to login. The login box will dissapear, and that\'s it. I\'m looking at the blue background. I can move the mouse AROUND, but that\'s all. When I Ctrl-Alt-Delete, there are NO programs listed.



Sometimes, if I\'m lucky and my DOS tinkering \"tickled Mr. PC the right waY\", it will go further than that. After the blue background/move the mouse thing loads, sometimes the startmenu/task bar will flash for a split second, then vanish. in these cases, it will also give me different errors, such as MSGSVR32.exe (I disabled that with a SpyBlaster, I think).





So, this is a strange problem. It might just be a simple file used for start up that got messed up. My guess as to why? My sister. Everytime something goes wrong, it\'s after she used the computer. I use Firefox, but she doesn\'t. It takes like 10 seconds to load initially, and I guess she can\'t wait for that. SO, she keeps using IE. Maybe some spyware is responsible?





I\'ve tried lots of things.  I can use system disks and such like that. So, I went in DOS and did the \"EDIT\" command on the SYSTEM.INI. I don\'t see ANY entries that point to LMOUSE.VXD.  I don\'t know what else to do.



I\'ve run all sorts of things...I made a Norton Rescue DIsk set and tried everything: The Disk Doctor, the DoS-based virus scan, and the \"Surface Scan\" for bad sectors.  I don\'t know what to do. I WOULD go to MSCONFIG and tell it NOT to load NpROTECT, but I can\'t do that through DOS.





What do you guys think I should try? It\'s obvious that the hard drive is fine, because I can do anything with DOS. I have the Norton Rescue Disks, my third Party BIOS disk (Western Digital Data Recovery). In the norton disks, there is some \"Unerase program\" that allows me to do all sorts of stuff..like edit hex values. If I knew which file needed what editing, I could change it.





Any help would be appreciated. I have another computer, a CD-RW disk, and a flash drive, so obtaining files/programs willl be no problem. Any help, as I said, will be appreciated. Actually, I don't think I have access to Norton "GoBacK" as you called it...the rescue disks I made came from the only operational computer in the house, which has norton systemworks 2002. I'll look again, but I don't think it's in there. If it is, I haven't been making silly "restore points". Don't get me wrong, SYstem Restore is useful, but it doesn't actually FIX the problem, and you don't learn anything  .

or try using the system backup feature>>win98se....I've been messing with my .bat files? No, I haven't. I don't touch my windows files. That's like trying to take apart your car. You'll F something up. So, I don't mess with my Windows files. Same idea. So. I didn't do it. It happens after my sister uses the internet. SHe doesn't use Firefox. She still uses I.E.. WE use the Free Netzero service. Spyware? Trojans? THis has happened before. It will screw something yup. No, I'm pretty sure that I haven't been messing with my .bat files, unless my sister is 1337 [email protected] I don't think so. So, it's just either malicious script action, or a Windows Anomoly. Yeah.

System Restore? I'm pretty sure I don't have that. I had the minimum stuff runnign neccessary for windows to run. I wouldn't waste my valuable resources on saving a snapshot of thje computer every 10 muibntes. I hab't type, because I'm angry. PLease forgive me.

So, am I crazy, or can spyware mess with your system files? Maybe? Just wonderin.

My 32bit mode disappears after installing a new hard drive.The only mode I can use is 16bit and the slide bar for the color adjustment is frozen.I went to CONTROL panel to Display consel,so I'am SURE I looked in the right area.How do I BRING back the 32bit mode.Do you have the same OPERATING system on both hard disks?

Is your new harddrive the "main" one with the OS on it? If so you will need to install your video card drivers.

just got this computer from a friend, everything is fine, mouse, printer hook up, internet but no power even for the keyboard help please xp pro

Or maybe you have lots of malware calling home. Some tracking cookies are hostile and use up your bandwidth steeling data from you.

Well, first time posting on here, searched around a bit but found nothing.  Heres my problem.

I recently put a computer together because my old one was falling apart.  i picked up a matsonic motherboard with a 1.5ghz P4 i found for really cheap.  One stick of 512 ddr 3300 ram, Western Digital 80gig hd, ATI radeon 9550 256mb ddr AGP graphics card, and a seal 32 bit sound card, which uses a c-media driver, which windows said doesnt pass the "logo" test or something? basically having ot do with compatabilty.

Anyways, All my programs, IE 6, winamp, any games, etc, will just shutdown after using for  a while.  Games tend to shutdown faster than IE and Winamp, but basically, it acts like there is not enough memory.  IE: it takes longer for program to end on me after a reboot, and games end almost as soon as i start playing.  

I also get blue stop error screens from time to time.  My last one didnt say anything but a stop error code thing, (not to technical as you can read).  But the one before that said PNF_List_corrupt.  Ive also had ones that said Page_File_not_found.  

I also just added the 80 gig HD, since the only peice i reused was a 30 gig maxtor from my ancient comp, and i thought it was bad.  Since i have upgraded, the problems arent as frequent, and my available memory when no apps are running went from around 220mb to 350mb.  I beleive this would be whats allowing program to run a little longer.  

I beleive it is a memory problem, but what can i do.  Any help is appreciated, been DEALING with this for a few months now.  


OH, i upgraded to WINxp home with the service pack 2.  when i did the rebuild.  Im using a 450watt power supply too, with 3 case fans running, fan on teh processor, and two disc drives, one harddrive, no floppy.  THanx, danny.Sounds like a Windows problem.... Did you get all of your Windows updates?

On the advanced graphics settings try moving the SLIDER down a notch and then try. Keep moving it down until either the problem is fixed or it is as low as it will go (in which case this is not the solution.)

Go so start > run > dxdiag and run the tests. Results?

Get the latest Windows updates and install/reinstall the latest direct x and video drivers.

i will try all teh things you guys are mentioning.  

And for the psu, i was using one 450 watt, and now ive created a dual 450 watt setup, and it didnt fix my problem.  I got a better score in 3DMark2001 though, lol.  What would need 900 watts of power anyways.  lol.Oh, and when i try to play Ages of Mythology, it will just close on me, ussually after either watching the whole intro to the game, or if i skip that, a few minutes into the game.  It lets me play the game for about 5 minutes.  And then it just closes, no error message or anything.  IE and winamp will give me an error report message, and i ussually click dont send, takes a while.  

I ran the direct X thing, an dhad no errors, except once when i went to run teh direct3D test, it closed on me, like the game.  But i loaded it back up and it ran fine teh second time around.  

And i also just did the hardware acceleration test, and with EVERYTHING turned off, it still closed on me, but this time the graphics went out, still had sound, and then the whole game shutdown.is this an an old game the p4 maybe to fast for it??try cpu killer?>>http://www.cpukiller.com/Definatly not an old game, i highly doubt that is my problem.  Im sure it has something to do with every program closing though.  Liek IE and winamp(mp3 player).  Ive done everything from updating teh bios, turning off hardware accelerators, got all teh MS winxp updates.  The only thing i cant figure out is in sisoft sandra it says to update to MPS 1.04 or higher, but i cant figure out what its talkign about, ive searched on here and google.  Found nothing, and it also says my Processor is not running DEP, and some software is, so i need to upgrade for security reasons.  DOnt know how important that is.

I had alot of trouble with a spyware and a trojon I had to go into my files manually and delete them they are gone but now when I delete something it does not go to the RECYCLE bin  
1. I WENT into PROPERTIES and made sure the box was not check to delete files
2. i am set at 10% of my hard drive for my RB settings
any other suggestions I dont know what else to do

blahThere are a couple of ways to delete files. If you delete them in the cmd window with del, the deleted files will not go into the recycle bin. If you right click on a file and choose delete, these files should go into the recycle bin.

What happens if you drag the file to the recycle bin?

it trys to delete the item instead of sending to RB deokat.......Right click on your recycle bin then select properties and be certain that there isnt a tick in  "Do not move files to the recycle bin .........Remove files immediatly when deleted "
That sure sounds like your problem.
What spyware software are you using ? Perhaps you manually deleted something you shouldnt have .

dl65  or a third party is deleting the files.......and not storing them in the r/c bin.guys thx for the help but the problem was the vx2 virus very nasty bugger no spybot program can get rid of it it is a hijacker that packes about 4 diffrent trojans and it buries itself deep in the registry it is possible to delet but it was easier to reinstall windows. I have beaten alot of spyware and viruses before but this one beat me VERY BAD  VBUT AGAIN THX FOR THE HELP ANYWAY

Hi. I am using Xp Professional. When I MANUALLY edit the registry entry AutoAdminLogon to = 1  the next time I RESTART xp the auto logon works fine. But the SECOND time I restart Xp AutoAdminLogon is set back to 0 and I have to click the user to logon.  So I set back to 1 again and then something sets it to 0. I think this started happening about the same time AVG free did a update but not sure. I uninstalled AVG and it STILL acting up. Thanks for any HELP.

All icons on desktop are thrown together (not in alphabetical order) on ONE side of the monitor. How to get them spread out on the whole SCREEN?

Also, how to REMOVE elongation of these icons to restore them to  "normal" appearance, that is, without elongation?

I am in the process of cleaning up my software to get my computer running better.  One problem I am having, and I'm really stumped, is that I cannot change my windows 98 appearance in the display properties DIALOG.  When I try, it LET's me select 'standard' from the drop down menu, but when I hit the 'apply' BUTTON the hourglass comes up and just freezes until I end task.
 are you using IE6?

When I try to install the update for The Sims 3 InstallShield Wizard will try to load but FREEZES about two BARS from completion then this error pops up:

" Error Number 0x80040708
Unable to create required engine components, check whether you have appropriate privileges to create COM components.
(0x80004005) Unspecified Error "

It only happens with this program and other programs tend to install fine but I've never had a problem with an update installing until now. Usually I wouldn't care either as it's only minor bug fixes that I haven't EXPERIENCED but sense a mod that I want to install only works with the latest patch so it's been very frustrating to deal with.
I install everything already as an ADMIN so I don't think not being logged in as one is the problem. And I've already checked with the help boards for the Sims, this isn't a problem with the update itself.

Any help at all would be appreciated. THANK you.  I've been working on the problem for awhile now and still haven't solved it. I've looked fixes from the far corners of the internet and tried to do several fixes but nothing works.

But it seems to be a problem with InstallShield Wizard only. Everything that doesn't open the program will install and run fine. It tried reinstalling it but that doesn't work. Any ideas on how I can find what the problem with this thing is or a fix? Both preferably. xD
