Solve : Tasklist used in Batch file causes ERROR: RCP service is unavailable.?

Answer»

The batch file is trying to set the errorlevel and check it to branch to the proper command line to start a new command.

ECHO OFF
FOR /F %%F in (%1) do(
ECHO %%F
Testlist /s %%F U administrator P dapassword | FINDSTR StartRT.exe
echo %ERRORLEVEL%
IF %ERRORLEVEL%==1(
ECHO "SERVICE IS RUNNING" ) ELSE (
ECHO "SERVICE IS NOT RUNNING")
)

This is RUN from the command line by typing test.bat consoles.lst where the latter has three LAN  console addressed included.

The output echoes the console address then list the ERROR listed above and then list the errorlevel that does not change.  In all trials it LISTTHE last value set.1. Your title says "Tasklist used in batch file" but the code you posted does not use Tasklist; it does mention something called Testlist though.

2. Did you mean "The RCP Server is unavailable"?

3. Check the status and startup type for the RPC and RPC locator services on the server that gets the error. Additional Services that may result in "The RPC Server is Unavailable" errors are the TCP/IP NetBIOS helper service, Distributed File System service and Remote Registry service. These services should both be set to automatic and started. The Kerberos Key Distribution Center (KDC) should be Started and Automatic on WINDOWS 2000 and Windows 2003 DCs. It should not be started and set to Disabled in all other cases.

4. You are not seeing up to date values of errorlevel because inside a FOR or other parenthetical structure if you SET a variable or try to read a changing system variable implicitly (like errorlevel, date, time etc) you need to use delayed EXPANSION to get the value to expand properly inside that structure.
The testlist statement is a typo.  It is in my code tasklist.  I believe I have found the reason for  the  RCP Error.  I put " " around the object of FINDSTR and the error has stopped.  However, errorlevel is not updating.

I will try to understand the delayed expansion you refer to.

Thanks for your help Quote from: Sogent on July 03, 2012, 09:26:10 AM

I will try to understand the delayed expansion you refer to.

After many attemps at finding a tool i could use to help i found that my cursor all of asudden upon TRYING to boot to the start menu of windows WOULD seize up at the wellcome section of the boot. Solve : How Do I Fix HotFix??

Answer»

I keep getting the Microsoft Security Update icon.  I express install the updates.  I get a message that some updates can't be installed.  I click it and get a message saying it pertains to a Service Pack prior to my most recent Service Pack (3) and isn't needed but a HotFix is installed on my G drive.  I'm guessing it's also been on installed on my C drive but no icon is installed and I don't know where I would look to find the program, and probably wouldn't recognize it if I saw it because these programs often have a string NAME not a word name.

And then another HotFix, containing the same folders as the first one yet twice the size in MB is installed on the G and I'm guessing it's also on the C.

Trying to execute the HotFix ULTIMATELY yields a message that execution failed because of a fatal error.  I'm guessing the error is that the HotFix isn't needed because it pertains to a Service Pack superseded by a later Service Pack which I already have.

How do I get rid of these HotFixes?   Are you aware that bogus MS updates are out there and doing a lot of damage to both individuals and IT firms.  It is not a trivial issue. But it has been given very low-key. It is so bad... - but I am not allowed to speculate. You guess what it might do. The bogus update has bogus security certificates that pass inspection.

If you have any back-up or restore capabilities, not is the TIME to start using them. If you suspect you have victimized, you need to go into the CH virus removal forum and look over the recommendations there.Attached: Screen shot of two can't delete messages.  First I get the top one.  If I persist in trying to delete the file I get the second message.

Attached: Screen shot of Hot Fix folder contents.  I have a bunch of the folders, and none contain a file that says "uninstall".

Still looking for a way to delete these files.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]http://www.filehippo.com/download_unlocker/Thanks for the link, but I still have a problem!

I installed Unlocker.

The "Hot Fixes" were each in their own file but I moved each file into one already existing file so they would be easy to locate and I wouldn't accidentally delete anything else.

I deleted each file separately, REALIZING along the way that I would then have to delete them from the recycle bin.  There were about 4 files plus the one I moved the others into.

I opened the recycle bin and clicked to empty it.  I got a popup saying "x" couldn't be deleted, followed by the Unlocker popup asking if I wanted to delete the file.  I said yes and this kept happening, with different files.  At one point I noticed the question "Delete all 84 objects?"  I clicked yes and saw the number go down to 81 objects.  I kept trying to empty the recycle bin, Unlocker kept giving me the object deleted  popup , but the number of objects didn't go down, it stayed at 81 objects.

I started deleting the objects one by one, apparently successfully.  Each file stated it had 0 kb.  I was down to 2 of these 0 kb files, deleted one, and all of a sudden there were 3 files.  I tried deleting the other and I had 4 files.  I clicked to empty the recycle bin and was asked if I wanted to delete all 50 objects.  There were only 4 on the screen.  I clicked yes to delete 50 objects and I haven't counted, but I'm guessing I had at least 50 with 0 kb.

I closed the recycler and when I opened it I noticed I have a few other files.  Instead of the recycle bin asking me if I want to delete the file I'm clicking to delete it's asking if I want to delete it to the recycle bin, where it already is.  If I click yes the kb count on one of these other files goes up.  If I click to delete the files that are going up in kb content, the object is deleted and the kb on another file goes up because it's not being DELETED, it's being "deleted to the recycle bin".

I'm continuing to "delete" objects one by one, but what should I try next?

Before I started the Unlocker process I had scanned at least one of the files for viruses, and of course the scan came up negative.

 Continuing:

I took a screen print of the recycle bin when there were just 3 files left, pasted it onto Paint and saved it, and closed the recycle bin to go verify that my screen print was where I saved it to.  I opened the recycle bin and all the 0 kb files have been replicated, with a few other files added.

I'm attaching the screen print of when there were only 3.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Now the files are all hidden and I don't actually know where they are.  My G drive recycle bin is asking if I want to delete all 42 items, but I know from previous attempts, they don't actually get deleted, they get replicated.

Additional:
Ok, I found the little bastards.  I changed the setting of my C & G drives so the recycle bins are configured separately.  I have the G, the drive with the problem, to delete without saving to the recycle bin.  These files are already in the recycle bin, but maybe my prior setting was keeping them there - though it never stopped anything else from being deleted.

Additional Additional:
Changing the setting to delete without saving to the recycling bin seems to have WORKED, and with everything gone I changed the setting back to save, but have kept the two recycling bins configured separately.  I wouldn't mark the problem as solved for a while, though, till I see it does not return.

Solve : Cursor jumping around, ads popup?

Answer»

Dell Dimension 411, WinXP, AOL,  - This ONLY happens when online - Cursor jumps from original place to right upper corner about every 5 – 6 seconds then when it returns to original place I have to click on mouse to set it to type again.  So I get about 4 seconds to type ANYTHING.  I am typing this in Word and will have to cut & paste to forum.
I have run Dell DX, pcPitstop DX, reinstalled mouse and monitor drives, have done “Quick Restore” on AOL, reinstalled AOL Adapter (as the AOL tech said it might be damaged), gone thru all settings I know to check, checked for viruses (Norton Corporate) and adware (ad-Aware).  This is driving me crazy!!
ALSO, sometimes when I click on an email or a website an ADV will cover my page and every time I try to click it off it COMES right back.  What’s happening???
Hi, you've already done what I would have suggested (reinstalled mouse and monitor drivers) so perhaps scanning with http://housecall.trendmicro.com may help.

Solve : Upgrating OS can't get passed logon?

Answer»

I bought a used computer from work and wanted to install WINDOWS XP Pro.  The used computer is running Windows NT and still has the old logon names and passwords.  No one at work know the old password. Any idea how I can get passed this? The best way would be to get the Administrator to log on and re-set the password.  If that isn't possible, PERHAPS this may help:

http://www.petenetlive.com/Tech/Windows/WinGen/passwordrecovery.htmhttp://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxppro/installxpcdoldhdd/index.htmIf you need to bypass the password, try taking out a stick of memory.  This usually forces the computer to go into setup.  You can also take the battery out for about 2 hours and it will erase the password.  When you go into the cmos settings LET it load the default settings.  Sometimes the motherboard will have a jumper that CLEARS the cmosNot an issue the user is trying to load winxp.....so the password is.....debunk! good post thou.....dont vanish! because i have said this!

Solve : Error Message When Installing WinXP Service Pack 2?

Answer»

I am working on a Protek P4 computer with 128 mb purchased earlier this year through Popular Club.  The computer case has the official Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Lan Plus STICKER with the 25 digit serial number.  When I attempt to install XP Service Pack 2 from the official Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD, I get the following errors: Setup Error  The system cannot find the file specified.  I click OK and get a 2nd Setup Error  installation did not complete.  I click OK and the setup routine stops.  I also attempted to install SP2 from an ADMINISTRATIVE download, with the same result.  This computer has no internet access.  Does anyone know why this is happening, and how can I resolve this problem.Well, first off, you really SHOULD have 256 MB of RAM to be running Windows XP on ANY computer... For the download problem, do you have a firewall running? If so, try temporarily DISABLING it.

[glb]Flame[/glb]if you have any anti-virus programs disable them......now load the cd......If you can get to the internet check out this site http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm

I know what you are TALKING about, some of my Dells at work was having the same issue.  Hope this helps. If run a spyware/adware SCAN before you install sp2, you should have no problems.  It worked for me.

Dileep Is D: drive located on this same computer or another system on a network with a mapped drive on your local system as D:   ?

If you have a specific program that LIKES to read/write to a specific location, you could test to see if this program is running before writing to the shared location. What is the name of this program that could conflict with a shared folder/directory? In task manager you can start this program and write down what the computer ASSOCIATES its name as, then use that to identify it in a batch. A batch could be created to test to see if this program is active, and if so, not allow writing to this shared folder and avoid a batch crash or other issues with file already in use being written to by batch instruction while already open by another program etc.

With this additional info, we'd be able to help you better.Yes: D: drive is a share folder  and it is on network.

Solve : Cleaning C:\Windows\Installer?

Answer»

Before I do any deleting in Windows, I want to make sure:

In Windows XP, if you delete files in C:\Windows\Installer, are you deleting what was installed, or just the instructions that were used to install it?

How do you know what an installer was for if you can't find the name of the program in plain words?

How do I find out if an installer is for a game program?  Wouldn't I need that installer if I want to put the game on a different drive?

Also:

In C:WINDOWS

If you delete a file that is used to uninstall something, are you still going to be able to uninstall it later?

http://www.theexperienceblog.com/2009/05/16/how-to-clean-out-windowsinstaller-folder-correctly/ Quote from: BC_Programmer on July 08, 2012, 06:13:19 PM

regarding C:\Windows\Installer

Those numbers are not extremely atypical; my win7 machine has around 10GB in that folder alone. However your drive is a lot smaller so that is a sizable chunk of the disk.

The folder itself stores the installers for all programs installed using Windows Installer. The purpose is so that you can add or remove features from those programs. without the original installer file.

You can use a tool such as the Windows Installer cleanup utility to clean-up that folder. Bear in mind that this will mean you need "original media" (either the DISKS or the original setup programs) for some programs to change them using add/remove in the control panel.

If you delete them you won't be able to remove them without having the installer file. (re-download or use the original msi file) that's sort of why it keeps them around.theexperienceblog.com/2009/05/16/how-to-clean-out-windowsinstaller-folder-correctly

This ultimately leads me to this:
support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
The Fix-It tool that doesn't seem to have fixed anything.  I had over 1 GB of free space after I uninstalled a big program and, without a doubt, installed it elsewhere.  I got pop-up for 12 Microsoft security updates and my computer overheats and shuts down when trying to install them.  This has happened several times.  I was down to under 400 MB and am currently up to 600.  Whatever the problem is, Fix-It didn't fix it.

majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459/

This doesn't give me any way to monitor it as it's working, if it's working, and doesn't give me any kind of report of the results.

Isn't there any way to compare what's installed with installers and uninstallers to make sure there isn't anything left behind that can be deleted?  Or is that what the programs you told me about supposed to do?

The overheating problem is probably the core cause of your problems. If the computer is shut down while installing updates, it leaves things in an inconsistent STATE.

Uninstalling a program will usually remove it's Installer file from the folder. There are no "uninstallers" preserved in that folder. The one file has the logic and data for installation and simply does the reverse when uninstallation is required.

I figure your problem stems from your hardware issues. A computer shouldn't overheat while being used under normal circumstances. I've noticed that when my computer slows way down (or used to get the hard drive whirling wildly fast) and snaps off due to overheating, I later get some kind of message telling me updates are ready to be installed.  The computer then overheats and snaps off when these things are being installed.  As has been previously pointed out, I've probably got a lot of partially installed updates repeatedly partially installed.  The suggestions made don't seem to have cleaned them out.

(Clicking on the DriverScanner just seems to briefly flash the logo of the scanner.  No window opens to show what it's doing, if it's doing anything, and no report is given.)

Here is a picture of the CCleaner checklist.  Aside from occasionally turning on Recent Documents and Recycle Bin, I don't use the items not checked because I don't know what they are System Items are and Advanced has a warning exclamation mark.  Would running any of these items be of use to my choked hard drive or overheating problems?

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Probably no reason to start a new Topic as some Helpers may miss the full story...

Just sayin...I thought it had gotten sufficiently away from the original question to be in a different section of the forum.

Here are some specific C:\Windows questions:

In the C:\Windows\Downloaded Programs File are 6 items, all measured in KB.  Four of them relate to games, and I'm not dealing with them now.  One is an ActiveX controller for Symantec; I no LONGER use Symantec products.  One is an ActiveX controller for Window Genuine Advantage; this file was created in 2006.  How do I get rid of the Symantec and the Genuine Advantage files and make sure everything is gone?  They don't take up MUCH space, but I don't need them.  Genuine Advantage occasionally wants to check my computer anyway.

In the C:\Windows\Downloaded Installations folder are 6 folders, ranging from 6 to 63 MB.  One is the shortcut to the folder itself.  Two relate to iTunes - they were created on different dates in 2005.  I don't use iTunes, so I'm sure I have nothing in those cabinets.  One is for the Adobe Photoshop Starter Edition, created in 2004, and I'm sure I don't actually have this product actually installed anymore.  I never used it, so I wouldn't have anything stored in it.  One is URGE, which I also don't recall ever actually using, so wouldn't have anything stored in it.  Aside from the shortcut to the folder, how do I delete these things and make sure everything related is gone?

In the C:\Windows Folder itself are a gazillion $Uninstall folders.  I'm afraid to open them to investigate, but what is spuninst?

And the biggest question is the biggest folder:
C:\Windows\Installer
The list of what's inside goes on forever, just about.
The last 7 items are wix MIDI files.  The Windows Media Player can't open them.  They all end in .SchedServiceConfig.rmi.  I'm guessing these midis aren't anything I couldn't find again if I wanted to.  How can I try to open them or get rid of these files if I can't?

The next to last group of folders in the the Installer file are Word docs ending in .tmp.  Since these files are in code, I have no idea what most of them are.  Are these saved copies of what I was working on when my computer overheats and snaps off?  I've pretty much moved all my Word docs off the C drive, so how do I get rid of these folders and make sure everything related is gone?

Insanity: Asking the same question over and over and expecting a different answer.

I'm done here.

Well, I'd like to be done with not getting answers.  A few years ago I stopped using Symantec products - uninstalled, deleted everything.  I was assured it was all gone.  Yet I look at the Installer folder and there's something by Symantec.  So it's a legitimate question: How do I make sure everything is gone?

How do I know if I click on an Uninstall file if it will simply open or if it will go straight to uninstalling?

There are many Word files in the Installer folder.  I don't know what they're there for.  If you can't cope with answering my questions, I'll gladly take an answer for any other qualified person.

Solve : Me message with mprexe & DRAW32.DLL?

When I boot up, I get this message: mprexe has caused an error in DRAW32.DLL. Mprexe will now close.

I click ok and the boot up proceeds.

I have reinstalled Me, the operating system. I have erased passwords, and run VIRUS scans by Norton, which is installed, and Trend Micro, via the Internent. But the message before boot up returns.

Any help in getting rid of this message would be appreciated. Also, The Me has gotten slower and more UNSTABLE. Is it time to switch to another system?
Hi, I have ME as well draw32.dll doesn't seem to be on my 'puter and certainly not running at boot.

Did the virus scans find anything? Can you scan mrpexe.exe and draw32.dll at http://virusscan.jotti.dhs.org ?

If this is a nasty then it is likely to be a trojan (either opaserv or haxdoor).

Search google for mrpexe +draw32.dll and all the RESULTS are trojan RELATED. Perhaps downloading the trial version of TDS 3 from http://diamondcs.com.au will help.

Derek.you system has become slower for many reason....first of the bunch norton anti-virus.....which hogs your hard drive SPACE.....or ok here is was you could do.....disable system restore scan for trojans.....try singer.....dump themes 31 mbs do you need them all dump the screensavers?? just something to make you think of??
if you upgrading has some people have done....a trojan/spyware etc will make the system whatever it is unstable..

Solve : Problem with Windows Update?

Answer»

I just recently reformatted my friends HD in her Compaq Presario C300 laptop and re-installed Windows XP PRO.  So FAR so GOOD, but when I try to update windows through the 'Windows Update' link, I'm having a problem.  The windows update page opens fine, and I click the 'express' option and it starts checking my version, etc.  Then the following error message pops up:  ""The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view."  (Error number: 0x8024400A).

This happens whether I select express or custom, and from what I've found, it may have SOMETHING to do with ActiveX(?) but I haven't been able to figure it out yet.  Any suggestions?Good afternoon

And yes IE's activex will cause an issue getting updates. Were you prompted to allow the activex so MS can put it in so you can do the MS updates?

I Know my self (as a last resort) in vista / W7 have renamed the software distribution in order to fix windows update issue. This is where MS keeps the updates that are / were done. I don't delete it just rename it. This way if it doesn't fix the update issue it can re-named back to the org name.

I hope this helps to answer your question.

Please let us know and good luck.    What Win XP Pro service pack? See this link if it pertains to your case.

Hi guys,

Advance thanks for helping me on the below issue.

 I have XP (Intel(R) Atom(TM)) with 1.60 GHz RAM

When I click on file MENU by alt key or mouse, it showed me that there are some duplicates entries.

For Example: Magic ISO

When I select a file and clicked in file menu it shows me Magic ISO one time. But again I drag the file menu by mouse click or using alt key there is an ADDITIONAL "Magic ISO". Again I pressed Alt key and drag the options. But it showed me that another one Magic ISO entry. Could It be a virus?

I have attached three images for the above example.

Solutions and suggestions are HIGHLY welcomed.

OK... I'll try if you will.
I figured that, what am I to do since windows won't boot up?Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.

Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.

Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.

You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.

Copy the below two files to the root DIRECTORY of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter "E". This letter may be different on your computer.

copy ntdetect.com c:\

Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

Solve : chkdsk runs every start up; c: dirty, fixes don't fix?

Answer»

I'm running an HP pavilion with XP media center edition.  Zone alarm security suite, spyware blaster...my daughter thought the computer froze (it has been slow lately--I think ZA might be bogging it) and did a hard SHUTDOWN.  Now with every reboot, chkdsk runs on C.  When it gets to stage 3, it always lists an unspecified error, then finishes booting.

Microsoft said tocheck system tools for scheduled tasks, but neither chkdsk not autochk were there.  They then said to regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\currentcontrolset\control\session manager\bootExecute, modify to autocheck autochk *.  I did that.  No difference.

I then found a posting on this site (as well as a COUPLE of others) that said to run cmd, chkntfs /d return, chkntfs /c C; return, chkntfs /x C: return, reboot, then run cmd chkdsk /f /r C: yes to next reboot.  I did that; however, it did not seem to do the 5 stages.  When it got to stage 3, again, it said unspecified error, never seemed to do stage 4 or 5, then finished booting.  Other than being slow, everything seems to work fine.  However, I'd like to resolve this issue if I could.

I am NOT super computer saavy, however, I do follow directions well.  I don't have the XP disc nor a recovery disk, but I do know that this computer is SET up with D as recovery.  Can you explain how to use it to fix this error?  (I also know how to use F8 if that's needed).   Thank you for any help you can give...What OS are you running?XP Media Center Edition 2005Boot to the recovery console and run: chkdsk /rNot good.  Booted to recovery console OK, SELECTED C and ran chkdsk /r.  It said "checkdisk is checking the volume, then chkdsk is performing additional checking or recovery--it listed this sentence 3 times.  Got to 50% complete, then said "The volume appears to contain 1 or more unrecoverable problems."  It then listed the data on disk space.  For grunts and giggles I ran chkdsk /r again, but got the same results.  So I'm guessing this is not a good sign...can you tell me the possible/probably reasons, and my OPTIONS?  Thanks...Chkdsk /r runs 5 tests, so you should see the same messages 5 times (not the error message)

The fact that it is reporting unrecoverable errors indicates a problem with the hd. You can do the following to confirm:

Hard Drive Diagnostics:

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), to make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba hard drives, see here: http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=ServicesSupport/FujitsuDrivesUSandCanada/SoftwareUtilities#diagnostic

Solve : XP switching itself off?

Answer»

Hello

I am attempting to assist my sister who has an XP tower run Malwarebytes, but when she runs the programme after x amount of HOURS (she has a huge amount of files on her hard drive, so the programme has a lot of work to do), XP shuts down and she is unable to see the RESULTS of her Malwarebytes 'full system scan'.

I am guessing that XP shuts down after a certain amount of time, but I am unable to advise her how to alter that time so that the computer doesn't actually ever turn itself off.

What advise should I give her, please?

Thank you. What other Protection apps do you have ? ?

MBAM although very GOOD at what it does is not an Anti-Virus app...She has Avast and I have set Windows UPDATES to automatic. And she has her Windows firewall on. Run avast 1st...reboot ans re-run MBAM...

If either results in the same shutdown visit our Malware section of the Forum and have the experts have a looksee...I will do that today, Patio, thanks for your reply.Anytime...run the Update for it 1st...and bring us good NEWS.

Solve : Scanner not recognizable in User accounts?

Answer»

I am running Windows XP w/ SP-2 and installed my Mustek 1200UB (USB) Scanner. This hardware works fine in my admin account but the User and the Power User account do not recognize that the scanner is plugged in.  What could be the problem? I have been looking on the internet for 2 days trying to find reference to a problem like this but have been unable to find a resolution.  Make that Windows XP Pro w/ sp-2  When you installed the software for the scanner, did it give you the option of which accounts to install the software on? It probably only installed on yours, which is why only your account can access it. What happens if you put the software CD in ONE of the other accounts and try to install it?

[glb]Flame[/glb]That was the first thing I tried. I uninstalled the hardware completly switched to the power user account and reinstalled . It still would not see the scanner on the system but when I switched back to the admin account the scanner was sitting there READY to use???  Try making it available in the All USERS/startupWell, for some reason its only installing on administrator accounts... Just make the Power User account an administrator...

[glb]Flame[/glb]is this scanner ICS shared! Turning the Power user account into an admin account somewhat defeats the purpose of why this account was created. I created the account for another user whom I do not intend to have admin rights.
In response to the the question by merlin_2, this is a local scanner directly connected to the system so I am unsure how Internet Connection Sharing could be causing the scanner to WORK only on the admin account.
To 2K dummy... I am not sure I am understanding the statement. How do you mean make it available in the All Users/ Startup? Looking in the All Users profile directory I see the Mustek scanner listed but don't know if this is what you are saying to do.click my network places icon......splash screen will pop up just  follow  the  on screen instructions.

Solve : Windows booting problem?

Answer»

I shut my computer down while a few programs where still running due to it freezing. I now try to start my computer and it goes right the screen with the options to either;

Start computer on Safe mode
Start computer Safe Mdode COMMAND Prompt only
Start using last succesful configuration
Start Windows normally

No matter which I choose my computer goes to starting up Windows...Then fails and trys again...Right before the computer turns off to restart I see a blue screen for a very breif moment. It is an endless CYCLE....Is anyone familar with the problem? I can't get past this blue screen.

I am not that computer literate, but I think it might be a virus. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

ThanksTry last good config again. No joy?

What percisely does the error MESSAGE SAY?

Try, at the command prompt, typing

scanreg /restore

and choosing a time when your computer worked. I didn't note your Operating system? That information would be helpful. maybe I missed it?It's very possible that you DID get a virus... However, I NEED to know.... Did you have virus protection?

Solve : Continuous reboot before XP login, safe mode unavaliable?

Answer»

I’m having an odd problem I haven’t seen before.

My computer was working fine all day yesterday.  I turned it on last night to do some work and noticed that the mouse arrow was not on the screen.  If I move the mouse around I can highlight different icons.  I chose to shutdown the regular way but could not get to the final “shutdown” prompt.  I finally did a hard shut down (which I have to do a few times in the past without a problem).

The computer wound startup, give me the black screen saying that I shut it down improperly, and I tell it to startup normal anyway.  This time, the windows XP screen comes up I get a quick blue screen that I cannot read, and the computer reboots.  I cannot boot up in any safe mode and cannot startup using the Windows XP disk.  I cannot even get to the point of reinstalling windows.  I was able to turn off the command that restarted the computer upon system fail and saw what was on the blue screen.  It read:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer.  If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities.  Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers.  Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:

*** STOP:  0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x87388EF0, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)

I cannot seem to get into any screen to uninstall anything.  The one thing I noticed is that upon turning on after a hard shut down, it does a memory check before checking the drives.  When it reboots after the blue screen, it does not conduct a memory test.  My wife put in the diagnostics CD for the hard drive and conducted a disk scan.  It ran to 99% and hung there all night.

Any ideas?

I built this computer about five years ago.  My operating system is XP.  I have 1gig of RAM.  My master is about also about five years old and my slave is three years old.

Thanks in advance.
From MSFN:
Quote

A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may be corrupted. Other common CAUSES include heavy hard drive fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check the file properties of NTFS.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable device drivers to the most current versions.

It sounds like the main HDD is having issues...it never completed the disk check ? ?
You can DLoad and run the diagnostics on it from the drive manuf. website...follow the guide to creating a bootable CD.
If the drive is failing it does not have to be running Windows to retrieve your data...it can be hooked up as a slave on ANOTHER machine to do this.
Slave Drive Tutorial.

Best of Luck and let us know...One other thing we noticed while checking around last night, some archived posts suggested that the RAM is having an issue.  I turned he CPU off, removed out 1gig dim, blew the dust off the entire area and dim with our canned air, and reinstalled in the other slot.  Same problem.

Along with the above suggestion you can also DLoad and run MemTest...also FREE to test the RAM...
But i would think that data recovery and backup should be the priority for now...
With weak or failing hard drives the more you do with them the further away data recovery GETS...you may only get one chance at it.That's what we are going to do.  We don't have another computer we can hook the drive up to, so it looks like GeekSquad will get a shot at it.

I really appreciate your help this morning, Patio.  Have a great week!

Ray
Please don't turn it over to Geek Squad...
Using that Tutorial you should be able to do it yourself or with someone's assistance...
There has to be someone family/friends that have a machine for this...takes about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.....
Geek Squad has wiped more data than google has right now.

At least ask around and try to find an alternative.New questions attached to this post:

Geek Squad could find nothing so I took it back.  I have a new hard drive alone in the tower, loaded WinXP on it and it runs fine.  When I add the existing slave (the new drive set up as the new master), again it runs fine.  When I set up the old master (the drive from where all the problems were originating) as the slave the the new drive/master, WinXP loads then I get a blank screen indefinitely.  Upon startup the new "slave" can be seen as in CMOS as well.  I was about to get an external drive kit and plug it in as a USP external drive to see if I can get see the data.

My question is this:  I was under the impression that despite having an operating system on a drive, when that drive is set up as a slave, the operating system on it will just sit there and do nothing.  Am I wrong in this assumption?

As always, thanks,

RayWhen I read my post back to my wife I realized just how confusing it sounds.  That's what happens when you type angry and don't proof read.  Sorry about that!

My question is:  Can an operating system loaded onto a slave drive affect the initial boot up?

RayIt shouldn't...
Are you sure the jumpers are set properly ? ?
Cabled correctly ? ?

MB============================Slave======Master.

It also may have been booting to the 2nd drive all this time. Double check the boot drive priority in the BIOS...make the neccessary changes and press F10 to save changes and Exit.Jumpers for each drive set up properly, cabled correctly, and the boot drive priority is set up correctly.

If a slave drive were malfunctioning, would that cause the system to not boot at all if the master were functioning properly?

I tried booting into safe mode and it displays commands line for line, then freezes at the file “mup.sys.”  This is the same file every time we try to reboot.  Interestingly enough, this is the exact same thing that would happen when we originally tried to boot up in safe mode before configuring the new drive as the master.

I was thinking of purchasing an external drive kit so I can try to see the data via USB.  Any ideas?

Ray
I'm back with an update,  and more perplexed than ever!  I did buy that external drive kit, and I hooked up the problem disk drive via USB (while running Windows XP with the newly configured master drive).  Couldn't see any of the data on the drive.  Hooked the same drive up via USB to my laptop.  Couldn't see the data on it.  So I hooked it up to a 3rd computer (at work), and I was able to access the drive and see all of the data with no problem!  I immediately burned all of the data to DVD, so fortunately I have recovered anything that may not have been recently backed up.

I also ran a disk check using the Seagate "Seatools" utility that came with the disk.  It failed during the test of the file structure, and only provided an empty error log.

So I decided to try resurrecting this drive since the data had been recovered.  I formatted it and loaded Windows XP.  It booted up and started Windows just fine...until I loaded SP2.  Now it gets stuck on the Win XP splash screen during startup just like before!  Could SP2 really have been causing this problem from the beginning?  This wouldn't really make sense to me, as I have been running SP2 for a couple of years now with no problems.  Or is there some other problem with the disk that requires another kind of repair or formatting?  I had a similar problem when Stopzilla updated. I found that there was a driver problem and SZ technical support sent a Ren which I did and it worked fine. Perhaps you had a software update and a file was corrupted. Had I known this, it could have saved me and my hard drive hours of problems....just a thought.  Quote from: toda on July 21, 2012, 01:34:08 PM

Solve : Google searchbox?

Usually when I open Firefox the Google searchbox pops up.  Now, suddenly, instead of the Google searchbox I get the Firefox searchbox.
   I use Windows  XP

How to rectify this plse?

Thank you.

GUZEPPI (74 year old civil service pensioner)Good evening,

Sometimes when Firefox updates, a different homepage might load. Usually, it will only show this new homepage once and will retain your original page.

To change your FireFox homepage:
Open FireFox.
After the FireFox window opens, click in the upper left-hand corner on the button that says "FireFox" (it is usually orange).
Click on "Options" (just click the text that says "Options". There is a little arrow that indicates there are other things you could choose, but you just want options).
Under the General tab, you can set your homepage in the Homepage field.
Type the address with the www (e.g. www.google.com)

Let us know if that works/helps!

PERHAPS you have not seen this?
http://www.google.com/firefox/
vs. www.google.com

The actual independent search box of FireFox has no option called "FireFox Search"
I also feel like noting that right clicking the search bar icon does nothing.
I also feel I should say that the default search engines included with FireFox are "Google, Yahoo, BING, Amazon, eBay, Twitter, and Wikipedia. ", not "FireFox Search, Google, Yahoo, Bing, Amazon, eBay, Twitter, and Wikipedia.

I don't know that you were saying something sarcastic towards me or unpleasant, or neutral, but given what the OP included I believe I made a very good analysis of the possibilities. Of course, it is possible that the OP mis-worded something and could have intended the actual search box of FireFox, but FireFox has only once changed the default search box in its entire history. As Zylstra said, sometimes an update, for some reason, will change the homepage back to http://start.mozilla.org/en-US/ (Or the very similar google./firefox where can be pretty much any .ca, .com, etc.)

His instructions should rectify the PROBLEM.

It might also be the one-time appearance of the "you've been updated" page that they usually show after you update the browser. Though to my recollection that doesn't have a search box.My mistake...it's a Left clik on the search box that produces a drop-down list whereby you can select and/or add the custom search engine of your choice...Firefox no longer supports Google Toolbar or the imbedded Google search (which is what I think the OP is referring to).
Googlebar Lite is a substitute:  https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/googlebar-lite/I just updated to the latest FireFox and google is still the default search engine...

However until he returns we may never fully understand his query...Many thks to all who have taken the TROUBLE to help me out with the Google searchbox problem.

Unfortunately the methods you suggest will not work.

What I want to do is:  I want to re-install the Google Searchbox so that when I open Firefox I will get on the monitor not the Firefox  large icon  in the middle of the screen with a searchbox under it but the large Google icon with a Google searchbox right under it.

Hope I am am being clearer now.

Solve : Screen distorted in some resolutions?

Answer»

Hi
My screen seems distorted in some resolutions like 800x600 or 960x600. But it seems FINE in 1024x768.
(http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/s480x480/552697_500220880003484_2098950245_n.jpg This is what I mean by distorted. The sides of the screen cannot be seen)

I don't know if this is a SOFTWARE or hardware problem but I tried changing the hardware acceleration and nothing changed.
My graphic driver is GeForce4 MX 4000.Did this just start or has it always been this way? Do you have the current driver for your video card? Open Device Manager - are there any yellow or red symbols? No yellow or red symbols in device manager. This problem has started some time ago but I didn't care much till now. I just tried updating the driver and "the wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed".You don't use the wizard for device drivers. Go to the Nvidia website, find the current driver for your card, download it and install it. I tried the NVidia website. This is what I got: "Your PC currently has the latest driver installed for your GPU. No driver update is necessary at this time."Okay. What kind of display is it?I don't get it. What do you mean what kind of display?lcd or crt?crtAre there physical controls on the monitor? If so, you'll need to use them to "center" the image on the screen and then there is probably a "save settings" button so that when you return to that resolution the monitor will remember the settings. You mean the menu that opens with the buttons on the monitor? I tried reducing the horizontal SIZE of the screen with that but it still is distorted, it looks thinner on the sides. (http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/s480x480/529494_500296473329258_1602039101_n.jpg)There should be other buttons, knobs, dials or menu settings that adjust the skew and all aspects of the picture. Play around with the menu, you'll get it. Remember to save the settings. You may need to do the same thing for each resolution you use.I tried all the menu options. There was a "Shape" submenu and I tried tweaking everything there but it didn't fix the distortion. I tried the "Position" submenu and tried to move the screen to the left. The right part started stretching out but the left part kept disappearing on the left.

I don't know if this is important but here is something else I noticed. When in a distorted resolution, if I press the Print Screen button and then paste the image in Paint while in a normal resolution(1024x768), the image is fine.

And ALSO when my computer is turning on, and there are all those white letters in black background in the beginning, the view is distorted at that time too.Download the latest video driver from Nvidia, uninstall your current driver, and install the one you downloaded.I used automatic driver detection on the NVidia webpage and when it said the driver is up to date, I clicked download anyway. I uninstalled my current driver, restarted, installed the downloaded driver, restarted again but it's still the same.
