Solve : I can't Ping!?

Answer»

I can't ping. The only two IP's that receive replies are 192.168.101 and 127.0.0.1. I am the 192.168.0.101. I can't even ping the host computer. And my internet is suddenly starting to freeze a lot, I have to wait a few hours for it to work again. I checked for adware and viruses, but I am completely clean. Then I checked fro MALICIOUS processes, I got rid of the ones I didn't need (the ones that didn't look familiar) and it still did NOTHING. I don't remember what I did because I haven't done a ping check in months. I also got rid of my firewall, originally the error was "PING transmit failed, error code (some number)" Because I accidently made the firewall always block pings, but just shutting it down got rid of that. Any help would be great.

P.S. I am able to connect to the internet through a web browser.

IE: I am posting in this forum through the computer with the ping problem. Maybe my ping file is corrupt, or maybe this is more serious.type net after the cmd prompt or in the run box......aand chose the options like net view.....does it though up an error message??Sorry to waste your time GUYS, sorry. It started working again. I think all I did was uninstall my firewall and restart a couple times. Strange how that fixed it when it used to work fine with my firewall.

By the way, the net command worked fine. No errors.

Thanks anyways.Nevermind, it stopped working again. It seems it works right when I restart, but when I go to web sites, somewhere in the middle of it I lose the ability to ping. I need help again.reconfig firewall to allow sites lthat you wish to ping.....also check you are allowed to ping the SITE in question the other firewall may bounce your request back?? check the network settings???file sharing and all that jazz....Nevermind, it started working again. Sorry to waste forum space. Dont worry john take it easy mate.......if you have... a ..problem we have the time?? just post.....no charge....someone will help........Wow, the way it was going back and forth I thought is was more than just a ping issue.  More like ping-pong.LOL. I believe it stops working everytime I feel a slight lag. For EXAMPLE, if all of a sudden I am going to a website and it takes longer than usual, my ping stops to work. You do know that ping and surfing are directly related right?  If you can't ping then you won't be able to surf either.Yeah I know, weird right?. I can only ping 192.168.0.101 (myself) and 127.0.0.1 (also myself). Anything else results in a request timed out.see if you can repair the winsock>>http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Solve : weird problem with computer?

Answer»

Hi guys I have a compaq presario with a 1.8 gig processor and 1 gig ram and a 250 gig hard DRIVE. The problem I have is when the POWER went out a couple of months ago my computer was acting weird the graphics and everything basically acted like it could have a virus but i checked all that it came clean and i could not figure it out so i reinstalled the os I have win xp and everything was fine until the power went out again and this time it went out 3 different times within an hour and every time i just turned on my computer in between and there was no storm it was after and now my computer is doing the same thing all over again. right now i'm on my laptop my other computer is a desktop. I've become stumped on this maybe my hard drive has bad sectors i'm not sure. but after this happened i've had to reboot my computer everyday but after i reinstalled the os it was fine it only started to act up again after the power went out and then i had to start to reboot the computer again. i've even updated the graphics driver after the first reinstall. and like i said it worked fine until the power went out again. any ideas oh by the way internet explorer was freezing and crashing alot and the computer and before the power went out i didn't have a problem.

thanksWithout puntcuation i can barely decipher your Post.sorry about the lack of puntcuation i'm not very good at that. Basically my computer is giving me problems when ever the power goes out and then i have to reinstall windows it's happened twice now in the last 2 months. it was crashing and going slow and the odd thing was internet explorer was the most affected. the first time it happened i did a quick format and reinstalled xp then after the second time which is tonight i did a full format then reinstalled the os. My computer has a gig of ram in it and all the cooling fans are running i verified that lastnight. I did all virus checks and malware and it came out clean. so i'm not sure what's causing it.Good evening brett1974 and welcome

If you have re-INSTALL windows every time the power goes out do any of the below apply

#1... Do you leave the PC on pretty much 100% of the time so the only time it is off is during power outage
#2... When you start the pc and while it is running do you hear a winning / clicking noise? especially when you are opening programs
#3... Do you get or have you in past (last few months) get any errors or BLUE screens of death?

Once again welcome and hope to hear from you soon, Mike   Yes I do leave the computer on all the time No the only thing i hear is the fans running so i know the hard drive is fine and no no bsods at all Quote from: brett1974 on July 24, 2012, 07:04:52 AM

Yes I do leave the computer on all the time
Well, you have a bad habit.  You should change that.  You should also get a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply, or, in other words, a battery backup) unit and install the software that works with the UPS to monitor your power and automatically and properly shutdown Windows when a power outage occurs. Welcome back brett1974

#1..soybean is correct if leave it on pretty much 24x7 you really should CONSIDER getting a UPS that are great for power outages, brownouts and depending on the size of the battery back you can get 10+ min and if the power is not restored with in that time the ups will safely shut the PC down.
#2..If you are having to install the OS every time the you loose power I would run harddrive software to test the harddrive it may be very possible you have a bad harddrive.
#3..Even if you don't hear any noise doesn't mean the harddrive is not getting ready to fail.

Because if you loose power you should be able to start the PC back up. Windows maybe grumpy about not being shut down correctly or maybe some files in the OS may get corrupt but usually there should no reason for the PC to not start back up. For the test tool just let us know what the harddrive manufacture is and we can point you to the website to get the test tools so that can be taken out of the

Please let us know how you make out, Mike          I am thinking about getting a ups and I can boot up into windows and everything and use it but it seems like the when the power goes out it corrupts some of the files and then after while like a day or so i have to reboot. where as before i never had to reboot my computer everyday. like right about now i would have to reboot my computer cause of the graphics would be messed up and the computer would be really slow. but back to the graphics it would be a bunch of colored lines on the tab of my browser. Then when i want to restart it the dialog box is like clear and when ie8 froze then end now dialog box would come up but no text would show up. I have a western digital 250 hard drive I think i may have to software for it somewhere.Start by taking the good advice given so far...
Then if the issues continue we'll go from there...

Solve : stuck on blue microsoft windows xp page?

when i start my computer it goes past the start up screen and stays stuck on blue microsoft windows xp page. how can i get past it so i can log on to my computer?I'd pop the OEM CD of XP and perform a repair INSTALLATION. I have seen this before with drastic hardware changes, although most of the time drastic hardware changes such as CPU change from say AMD to Intel causes blue screen of death ERROR. Your error is a desktop and services that is not populating from the sounds of it.Go to the safe mode. Install kaspersky internet SECURITY . Update the virus definitions.Launch a FULL scan.Try to log on to win xp again.

Solve : Kaspersky password Refusal to remove.?

Answer» HI and appreciate the gander.  I recieved a laptop last christmas
from santa and now that the security subscription is
up and upon Kaspersky's demand for compensation i've decided a different
ROUTE for my pc's virus PROGRAM.
On doing some research i've found out that Santa,in his quest to keep
within the parameters of the holiday budget, picked this HP Pavillion g6
up at best buy as a showroom model. As much as i love santa,i wish she'd
take'n different steps but don't get me wrong its a nice laptop. ISSUE:Cannot

they want you to produce at the very end of the removal process.

ps. come to find out, this laptop
was previously owned by a friend
to my stepsons wife who's boyfriend
works at best buy. lol poor santa, took again

If you have the system restore CD that came with this system you can restore this system back to factory and gain control over what software to add/remove after the system restore has been completed.Funny...i've never seen a password for removing Kaspersky...
Course i haven't used it in 3 years so things may have changed...

Actually i think it's ironic that an App would NEED a password to un-installl....sounds like something Norton would do. Quote from: patio on July 16, 2012, 06:06:22 PM

It's not about holding your computer hostage. It's a security feature to prevent unauthorized removal of the software by malicious programs or people. The user puts that password in and the user is expected to REMEMBER. This isn't Kaspersky's fault.

I would suggest either trying to get the password from the person who originally had the laptop. You could also try contacting Kaspersky. Their customer support is quite good and they might be able to offer you an alternative method to remove the software without having to do a system restore.

http://www.mycom.nl/Search.aspx?q=drivers

I dont think that will work... All the parts in my computer are from different brandsThen you need to go to the website of your MOTHERBOARD manufacturer and download and install the driver for your motherboard. Then go to the websites of your various hardware manufacturers (video CARD, sound card, ETHERNET card, etc) and download and install the latest drivers for all of those components. Be sure to get the XP compatible versions of the drivers.

Solve : 120 gig full already...??

Answer»

My 120 gig hard drive shows that it is almost full. I know that almost 50 gig of it is video clips being edited from my camcorder. I really don't think I have FILLED this thing up.

There are 3 users on the PC, myself as admin, my wife and son. Some of the video directory is "shared". After browsing the C drive last night looking for where all the space went to, I concluded that the shared directories are counted once for each user giving a false disk usage. So when I select "properties" on the C drive to get usage and the pie chart it may be wrong.

Am I right or wrong here?

Thanks,Hi, I don't know why the disc usage is being wrongly reported but maybe you could try a freeware disc inventory program to SEE where the space is being used. I'm just looking for a link to some downloads.

Derek.Hi, just had a thought; have you run Scandisc? Even if there are no errors the report should say how much free space there is.
(Back soon with some links)

Derek.Well, is there anything like pictures, games, etc. STORED on your computer? (Besides motion pictures) ALSO, what operating system are you using?

Derek. Thanks guy's, XP pro, first I am going to defrag then scan disk and then some of the utilities you have provided thanks again I'll keep you posted.burn data to disk........or upload it to a website.......120 gig is really 111.76 gig so there's 8 gig "gone".

Try reducing System Restore points to last one only and lower the space used by system restore.

If you have drive partitions turn system restore off on all but the C: drive.

Take a look at c:\windows for hidden $NTUninstaller$ files and delete them. Then delete their entries in Add-Remove programs.

Delete the datacoll files and the prefetch files (they will both re-build) and then run CCleaner over your system to clear out all the junk files.

Solve : 2 Windows in 1 computer, how to remove one??

Answer»

Hi all,

I had for a long time Windows 7, but I also wanted Windows XP.
So I installed windows XP, unfortunately on the same partition.

When I turn my computer on, Windows XP will load and I don't have the option to select Windows 7.
Windows 7 is still on my computer, It's installed in the map "windows" and xp is installed in the map "XP'

How can I start up windows 7 again?

Thank you for your time.

Edit: im in the BOOT.ini and I see Windows XP only... But I think its possible to add windows 7 in it?
Added windows 7 to it... rebooted windows and i got the option to choose windows 7! But some files are damaged in system32 so windows 7 doesn't start up.Good evening marcieboy and Welcome

OK a lot of the folks may tell you the same thing as I am putting in here.

If you want to multi-boot a PC always install the oldest OS to the Newest ONE

What I mean is (and this is from past experience) install XP then install W7 and if you want to install any Linux destro's then install them LAST because Linux has the better boot loader.

But onto your question if I am understanding you correct it sounds like the boot.ini was over written by XP. You can try to play with the boot.ini. but things very well may never seem right afterwards.

I would say to save you a lot of headaches "backup and save all your important doc's etc" Format the harddrive / partition the harddrive then install XP first on one partition and then install W7 on the other partition and let W7 handle the boot loader.

Even if you can fix the boot.ini in W7 the PC will never seem to work correct afterwards and more than likely there will be issues down the road.

Hopefully this helps you if you have any more questions please just come back to CH, MIKE    Windows Vista/7 don't use NTLDR to bootstrap the OS, and have SWITCHED to a newer "BOOTMGR" architecture.

BOOTMGR does not use Boot.ini.

The problem, of course, is that Vista/7's boot loader was replaced by XP's; XP doesn't know how to boot Vista/7.

You can use startup repair from the win7 disc to repair the MBR and bootmgr files, if you have one.

Solve : New computer running XP?

Answer»

Hi,
I want to buy some NEW laptop computers running XP. Is this POSSIBLE? Is it OK to to buy a WIN7 computer, format the disk and load XP?
Regards
Geoffl
It could be done that way....as long as there are XP drivers AVAILABLE for those LAPTOPS...... and you have a valid legal XP license for each machine.
Thanx...ST...forgot that important detail..... If you have a single license you cannot have installations on more than one machine at the same time.

Solve : windows xp issue?

Answer»

Hello and I wish i could get someone
to respond with some possible solutions.

I have a Dell Demension computer and have really mucked things up i'm thinking(come to think of it thats what got me in this mess to begin with ,the thinking part=>). So i was INITIALLY dealing with the error~mfc71u.dll cannot be found.you can try reinstalling.Along with"TASK SCHEDULER Has missed some tasks, blah blah blah. and yet still a what appeared to me to be a registry error that went something like 000000.fx? not to sure on the last one there.
Moving on i reffered to msconfig to invoke the boot selections and went with safe boot with networking. After many attemps at finding a tool i could use to help i found that my cursor all of asudden upon trying to boot to the start menu of windows would seize up at the wellcome section of the boot. Now from here i went, useing the term loosely ape sh_t,trying to resolve what seemed like a simple missplacement of the usb cable attached to the little HD homeing pod with the button in the middle, atriangular plastic device. So now here i am,befuddled once again. If anyone can help me with this i would be FOREVER gratefull.I saw where "Patio" helped someone with a somewhat similar predicament, but don't let that hold you back, please.

Thank you once again;Sincerely
Logansroll55

(added)1.I do have a DEll winxp cd
             2. I have repeatedly referred to F2 and made numerous attemps
at modifying to get passed this seizure issue.
             3. I have searched high and low for a schematic of proper boot sequence for the:Dell~Dimension 4600i Series(Bios Ver. A07)
On a botched OS, I'd use a Repair Installation if you want to keep important data on the HD and fix the OS, or perform a full clean installation wiping drive clean and setting it back to factory, then tons of patches + AV install, and then you should be all set.Good evening logansroll55

Have you had any luck with your issue?

If I am understanding your post the wireless device that has a rectangle shape. Is your mouse wireless? if so 1 are the batteries good and if so did you try pushing the reconnect button so the mouse will work again. Or do you have an external hard drive? sorry I am not sure what you are describing in your post.

One more thing you can try is doing system file check (sfc), and checkdisk (chkdsk) when you run these you very well may need your xp disk that you already have. These two can fix a lot of issues in windows.

Now just as DaveLembke stated doing a in-place install / upgrade will leave your documents, pic's etc in-place but will fix the corrupt windows files. Sometimes this is faster than trying to repair what files are broken / curropt

Also for XP a great tool that I have used in-place of windows control panel is http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml this is a good tool for editing the windows start up items etc. This tool has been around for many years and works great and the best part it is free but if you like it he does have take donations for it.

Solve : disk full?

Answer»

Have an external hard drive with 538 gigs free. Am trying to cut and paste .avi files onto external hd. error report keeps saying the destination drive is full and recommends a clean up. have cleaned up, and have more free space, but same error report comes up when trying to cut and paste. Have done complete scan, (Kaspersky) on both units and am virus free. HELP!Welcome to CH. VOLUNTEERS here are ready to help.
Please include the OS. It makes a difference.
And what kind of eternal HDD do you have?
What size are the AVI files?
Have you also run a check disk on the external?
If external drive has FAT32 filesystem, attempt to paste files larger than 4 GB will cause a similar error. Please describe "error report". Have you run CHKDSK?

Hi
Yes, have run chkdsk. it is FAT32Sorry,
error report says
"Cannot copy Spiderman3 : There is not ENOUGH disk space.
Delete one or more files to free disk space then TRY again.

Hi
Yes, have run chkdsk. it is FAT32

Did you run it with the /F switch?

You may have file system errors, especially if the free space is being misreported.

Actually, I'd prefer you run chkdsk with the /r switch. It will check for file system errors AND bad sectors and try to repair both. Quote from: Allan on July 27, 2012, 04:27:08 PM

Good catch there, Allan.
Regardless he is trying to copy a movie that i would guess is way over the FAT32 limit...

Is there any reason your external is FAT32 ? ?FAT32 is the issue.
But an alternative is to reduce the file size of the AVI files.
Also he could split an AVI into two or more parts.
Format factory can don both.
OK.
I ran chkdsk with the r switch. same result,
My mistake. The files are mkv, not avi. Strangely, I just got my copy of pc format mag, and loaded format factory onto my computer today. Any chance that it will split the movie into smaller parts? Will give it a shot now.
So am i correct in saying that big files are not compatible with FAT32 format. I have a 32 gig flash, and tried to change the format but it was no go.
Thanks for the input and will LET you know what happens with format factory. Quote from: patio on July 27, 2012, 05:09:24 PM

Why? Curious minds need to know.

So am i correct in saying that big files are not compatible with FAT32 format.

FAT32 max file size is 4,294,967,295 bytes (this is 1 byte less than 4 gigabytes). Any operation trying to put a bigger file on a FAT filesystem will trigger an error and the operation will fail.

Firstly, thanks again for all the input.I will wait til Monday to go harass my local supplier about getting another HDD that is not FAT32. Looked at format factory but it seems I will need a little patience to figure out how to use it.
To answer Geeks-9pm's question, I have not come across any other format but the FAT32 for at least the last 5 years. Honestly thought it was the only format now available. Will interogate my supplier about this, and refer him to this site if he gives me any BS!!
Thanks again guys. Quote from: Tookie on July 28, 2012, 04:02:08 AM

FAT32 is only one type of file system possible on a hard drive. It is a rather old format these days, and has a number of limitations, including the file size issue. There are plenty of other file systems that can be used on a hard drive. NTFS is probably the alternative best known to Windows users, since all versions of Windows from Windows 2000 onwards support it natively and since then it has been the preferred file system for Microsoft’s Windows operating systems. The problem for makers of hard drives is that NTFS is a proprietary Microsoft product and a disk maker WANTING to sell a drive ready-formatted would have to get a license from Microsoft and pay a royalty on each disk sold. This would make an ntfs disk more expensive than a FAT32 one so it tends not to be done on mass market external HDDs. You can buy disks ready formatted in NTFS but you have to ask for them. Anyhow, you don't have to buy another drive, you can just delete the FAT partition from the disk you have now, create a new one, and format it as NTFS. You would of course first move any data on it that you want to keep to another drive.

Solve : Insufficient permissions?

Answer»

Windows XP Home Edition - Google CHROME - desktop computer - I am sole user - Mecer Intel pentium P4 CRU - 3 GHz - 2 GB RAM - H.D. 75 GB - Used 25 GB. I am an Administrator. I can download any PROGRAM but it won't run - msg. is "insufficient permissions". I suspect it is with the OS. I feel that reloading or re-installing Windows XP may solve the problem. It was O.K. TILL about 6 weeks ago, and I cannot recall if or when I made a boo-boo that caused this error.
PROBLEM: The computer was a gift - internet paid for by a friend - I have no CD's at all, and cannot afford any. (I am a pensioner living in a Mission - pension US$150 per month ) I don't know anyone who will lend me a CD, and I am isolated to get anywhere. So what I think I need is step-by-step instructions as to how to repair or re-install Windows XP WITHOUT a CD of any nature. I am a novice so please treat me as a dummy. Thank you - Ken MilesBecause of your reference to this being a recent phenomenum  and your avowed lack of computer knowledge i am providing a link to the Microsoft site for instructions on their "recovery" process for your operating system. This does not require any discs. Please read it and try it.If you have further questions please return and we will endeavor to help.truenorth
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084Good afternoon kenmiles and welcome to CH

If the info that truenorth is giving you is 100% correct but you may not be aware of these other XP features (The info below is just for your knowledge and if all else fails). Out of curiosity do you have any important items (like pictures, word documents etc) that you would want to save. Considering where you are I don't know if you have access too or can borrow a external hard drive or some kind of storage medium to do so. "Doing this is a just in case" Plus if you do have to do a complete re-install please keep in mind that a LOT of bandwidth will be needed to reinstall all service packs / hot fixes / security updates etc. Plus you need AV (either free or paid). These windows updates will depend on what service pack is installed can be in 100's to update the PC.

Now this is just in case you have to do a fresh install and not using a "restore point" (this can be done with out XP disks so long as the hidden partition is in place) On Some PC manufacture's like Dell, HP, Compaq etc have a small hidden partition to re-install the PC if nothing else works to start this will very from PC manufacture to manufacture.

Like a lot of Dell's during the boot of the PC you would see a "blue bar" up top and you would push and hold the "crtl" key keep on tapping the "F11" and just follow the PROMPTS during the option boxes that come up just pick the one that states "restore pc to factory setting" it will tell you to make sure this is what you ant to do and to have a back up of all data.

For a lot of HP's when you turn on the PC and just after the HP logo appears keep on tapping the "F10"  key and Select one of the following procedures, depending on which recovery type you want to perform:

To perform a standard system recovery, click Next , and then click Yes . (this one is for re-installing app's and fixing windows)
To perform a destructive recovery, click Advanced , (select Destructive Recovery ) and then click Next. The "destructive" is not as bad as you think but it will delete all your stuff and restore the PC to factory settings.

But just as truenorth pointed out the MS link will guide you thru the steps to "using restore points" this is a great feature if like say the PC was running OK like say a WEEK ago or even further. Using this keep ALL your personal doc's, pic's etc in-place and not touched. Not to mention using this is a LOT quicker (time wise) and headache wise. If for some reason you do not have access to that web site please come back and let us know so we can put the needed info here for you.

What I am writing here looks and sounds worse than it really is. If you can give us the model of PC (i.e Dell Dimension E521 or a HP DV9000) we can help you in more detail if the link truenorth has given you is not available and if you need to do a fresh install or if you have any questions.

Please let us know if we can help or answer any more questions, Mike

Solve : Tiling in Windows XP?

Answer»

I USE the FOLLOWING method to tile windows side by side in Windows XP but I have come across a problem which I am outlining at the bottom of this message.

Method used:       1. Firefox and a Word document are shown on my taskbar .
                             2. I hold down the Ctrl key and left click on one of the buttons.
                             3. WITHOUT releasing the Ctrl key, I left click on the other button.
                             4. After releasing the Ctrl key, I right-click on an empty area in the
                                 taskbar.
                             5. From the menu, I select TILE VERTICALLY

The problem:-   How to reduce the size of the PAGE which shows the Firefox site?
I have managed to reduce the size of the Word document page but
why not the other page, that is, the one on the right side of the
                          screen?

Many thks to all who have the kindness to reply.Whichever window you want to re-sizw open it and make TI the size you want...
Then close that window and windows will do it automatically the next time

Solve : I have no sound, please help?

Answer»

Hi recently the other day I was deleting some programs off my PC and I accidently removed Soundmax and it would be grateful if someone please HELP me with this issue. I tried system restore, deleting all soundmax files, also clicking run and and device managers, still nothing. Even downloading a driver from dell my PC is a windows XP home edition 2002 and when I re installed soundmax it said "no audio codec installed". help I have tried everything I possibly could think of so now I am desperate for getting sound on my computer back.what else did you uninstall?Good evening samsalgado and welcome to CH

I do have a couple of questions for you just like "TheWaffle"

#1... Your OS (operating system) is XP? correct
#2... What programs did you remove and did you remove them from windows "add / remove" or were you finding files / programs that you didn't want and just hit the "delete" BUTTON?
#3...If you look in the "device manager" is there any yellow ! or any that are greyed out or disabled?
#4... Do you know what SP (service pack) you have if you are not sure what one you have just "right click my computer icon" and choose properties and on the general tab it will say windows xp service pack 3 etc?

When you have a minute Please check the above items and let us know how you are making out, Mike

If you uninstalled Soundmax why would you expect the sound to keep working ? ?

P.S. The best codec package out there is K-Lite...however you could just use VLC player...Free.You should contact to the NEAREST computer repair shop about your computer.

Ignore the above post.try to search over the NET for sound driver compatible to your motherboard.go to command prompt and TYPE dxdiag

The amount of system memory has changed.
Hit F1 to enter setup
Hit F2 to continue

I hit F2 to continue the BOOT process to XP. When I check properties on MY Computer to check my RAM it reads 1.49 instead of 2GB. Is it possible that only a SMALL PORTION of my RAM is not working, and the rest is   Is that possible ?? How do I fix this ?? Can I fix this ??

Thanks

You try new RAM.
But first, check for any debris or crud in the memory slot. Or on the memory chips. Do you live in an area will high DUST or high humidity?
Yeah........ my PC is down under my desk...... I am sure there is lots of dust down there. I will blow out all the dust with some compressed air from the can and make sure there isnt any debris in the memory slot or on the RAM itself. I will keep u posted,

Tanks

I've seen those errors with a failing CMOS battery...for 3 Bucks i'd REPLACE it.

Do it with all power unplugged.

Solve : After reinstall, computer freezes at paypal login?

Answer»

I've just reinstalled my dell dimension 5100,and now it freezes when I try to login to paypal.I reinstalled because I thought I might have a virus. I kept getting a window saying "internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close". I'd appreciate any suggestions as to what could be the problemEXACTLY what and how did you "REINSTALL"? EVERYTHING you did please. From switched off,I pressed the button to switch on,and immediately simultaneously pressed the Ctrl and F11 buttons. This resulted in a CONTINUOUS ringing sound and a window giving two options:- system reinstall or system restore.I chose system reinstall.I had to use thethe modem's disc (voyager105 usb) and had to enter the dial up login details and the POP3(INCOMING mail)server and SMTP(outgoing mail)server details. Outlook Express works -I have received an email. Iwas able earlier to get my internet explorer page up, but now I don't seem to be able to-I get the page which starts "the page cannot be displayed"After the re-install your Paypal COOKIES were wiped...when you log BACK in successfully they will be re-created...

If you are using the wrong password...which i suspect is the issue contact them and they will be able to give you the correct one.

Solve : 'Lost' profile in XP and not sure what I need to copy over.?

Answer»

Yesterday I 'lost' my profile in Windows XP (SP3).  My user log name is still there but loads a temporary profile with not much in it.  I have now LOCATED the lost profile in Windows Explorer, and I am ASSUMING I copy it over to a new profile. But I am not sure which files are ESSENTIAL beyond the obvious things like My Documents. Any help would be very much appreciated.Good morning whitelabrador and welcome to CH

OK if I am understanding you correct your old profile is corrupt.

What I would do if you have access to your old profile save it and open it now Pull out your STUFF (documents / pictures / favorites / music / download folder etc and past the pic in the new picture folder, same for your doc's etc etc do this folder by folder.

There is a problem with comping a profile over #1 if the old profile is corrupt you will just corrupt the new profile (that would just waste your time). #2 your old profile can not be copied as a whole over your new current one while you are using it (your profile) it must be done by someone ELSE with admin permissions / writes.

Hopefully this make since Long story short you have a good new profile don't ruin it by coping over one that is broken. Just take the contents. Mike

Solve : Folder on my Start menu?

Answer»

The folder on my START menu, titled MY PICTURES, will not show the images saved in the said folder but only a blank white page.
On the other hand, if I open the icon titled MY PICTURES on the desktop, all the saved images pop up on screen.
How to rectify this please?

Thank you all.Is this what you mean?  Maybe you have TWO separate folders for pictures.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]YES, that's it.  What I want to do is delete the wording MY PICTURES in the menu obtained when I hit the START button and replace it by the folder MY PICTURES whose icon is on the desktop.
As things stand with me at the moment, the MY PICTURES  folder listed in the menu when I hit the START button is an empty folder and i do not want to put images into it.

hope this clrifies the matter and grateful for yr patience.

GUZEPPI (74 years old, civil service pensioner)

I be 74 the end of this year.
Here is another screen shot. I added some arrows. the YELLOW ones point to the 'My Pictures' folder. You can change the name of an shortcut  icon on the desktop. You can also change its properties so it points to some other kind of thing or place.
The built-in icon on the start menu I can not change, except to change its name only. Some items on the start menu you can add or remove, but not the My Pictures. Actually, this is a WAY to remove it. But why not just rename it to something like "Empty"

Maybe somebody else will tell you how to fix the target for 'My Pictures' in the right hand start menu.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]MANY thks again.  Your method worked wonderfully.

Solve : Re: boot problem--always goes to chkdsk?

Answer»

Hi guys, please to meet you all, I have a similar problem than what GreenHorn had except that my laptop continues to COMPLETE the scan, also I did run
Click Start, then Run, type cmd, and click "Ok".
At the prompt in the command window that opens, type:
fsutil dirty query C:
and press "Enter".
the result is that disk is not dirty.
But still if I BOOT up or restart 9 out of 10 TIMES I get the same message "VOLUME Serial Number 320D-180E,
Also my sound on my laptop shutters,
Could this be hardware or is there a why to fix the problem?

Regards,I split your post from the other topic. It is best to start your own topic when you have a problem or a question.

Are you running XP? If so, boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r

If you are running Windows 7 (or do not have an XP CD), do the following:

right-click on a command prompt ICON and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type: chkdsk /r  (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.

Solve : Spontaneous Shut-down?

Answer»

Has anybody encountered spontaneous shut down of their system with no warning or error message in Windows XP?  This has been occurring on a regular basis for about a month.  First time it happened was while doing a full system scan in Norton Antivirus.

I know that a lot of far-reaching problems occurred after downloading the new XP service pack from Microsoft.  I dumped the upgrade and did a system restor, however, THINGS just ain't been the same since.are the power settings set to never.......control panel power icon click.....have a look in the events viewer log admin tools icon click......scan for trojans......nav.....does miss some of them......does this happen if the pc is on for a long while??THANKS for the response.  The shut down can occur whether or not the computer has been running a long time.  It has shut down while typing and while idle.  If I close the cover (Toshiba LAPTOP Satellite) and hibernate, I don't get the idle shutdown, however, if I leave it open and let the screensaver activate, I will get a shutdown.  Never a warning.

Fans are working properly so I can rule out overheating.

Should I follow your instructions for the "never" setting?

most laptops do shutdown when not in use......power saving...my one is set at 15 mins......if not used with in the time....personal preferences to set to never....but it puts a drain on the lion battery.....if you have it connected via adapter thats difference.. have  you checked the  bios settings check them......battery=full power......auto power=disabled  power on display=auto detect......examples of  a tosh bios settings........there may be need to look at them.....maybe the lion battery is not holding its charge......and shutdown would happen.........do it do it when connected to the mains adapter......Try starting up your computer in safe-mode and leaving it. Does the problem still remain? Even if your fans are in place and moving, if they are old they might not be as effective as they should be. Has this problem always happened? How long did the computer work fine?Probably a worm or trojan hiding in your computer somewhere.....

[glb]Flame[/glb]Thanks for all the tips.  I tried them all, but finally PAID some bucks and had a whiz come over.  Did a pretty exhaustive diagnostic.  Turns out that I have some bad MEMORY and a faulty motherboard and/or a combo of the two.  Luckily I have warranty time left with Toshiba.

Solve : system configuration utility doesn't like change?

Answer»

For the first time since installing ENGLISH windows XP and installing all of the things I wanted to, I used the system configuration UTILITY and deleted about 9 of the startup programs.  I checked them all out with the following website http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm
most of them being the extra programs I added.

Now when I restart windows, EVERY time I get this message in a pop-up with the heading System Configuration Utility.

"You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts.  The system configuration utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts.
Choose the Normal Startup mode on the general tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility."

Then there is a checkbox saying
"Don't show this message or launch the system configuration utlity when windows start: "
then a click BOX OK.

So it sounds like it's demanding I make the change.
if I check the box, it means the system config won't launch and my changes won't happen each time?  Is that right?
thus far, I left the box UNCHECKED, clicked OK and it lead me back to system config screen.  From there I can cancel, and I'm fine.
But i want to avoid doing this for every startup.

Any ideas?ideas - yes - tick the box then click ok.  What it's actually asking you is whether you want to have system configuration NOT launch everytime you start up - it's like it's saying "do you know you've made changes" and ticking the box then clicking OK says "yes, I know I've made changes and they're fine, now go away and leave me alone".

If you do as it is asking you and tick the "Normal startup" box, it will actually undo the changes you have made to start-up applications and start with all of them.

hope this helps.many thanks.
I may be retarded, but the language used by sysconfig wasn't very clear.

Solve : Share a com port?

Answer»

Hi,
I share a printer on a my network. Is it possible to share a com port?
I have 2 computers  running  a cash register program and want both of them to open the cash draw which is connected to a com port.
Any help greatly appreciated.
GeofflPlease share what type of POS systems you are using. There are many types.

I use to service POS systems. The ONES I serviced NCR and Fujitsu's had ports that looked like serial ports since they used 9 pin D-subs, but these ports sent 24VDC to the cash drawers solenoids to pop the drawers and were not serial communications! If one was to plug a serial device that is RS-232 into this port and the cash drawer was triggered to pop open it wouldn't be good sending 24VDC onto a 5 volt RS-232 serial circuit.

Knowing what you have for a system will better determine your options as for if its not serial communications, but instead a 24VDC output as is more common with  POS systems, you will need to create a Y Cable with Diodes added to prevent blowing the drivers out of each of the POS computer systems. If it is a real serial connection there are adapters out there that can share a single serial communication device with 2 devices sending serial communications. B & B Electronics has a bunch of solutions like this. http://www.bb-elec.com/subcategory.asp?subcategoryid=93

I also custom built an optoisolated serial splitter once that allowed me to download to 4 PLC's at the same time from a single serial connection. One of the PLC's kept the TX/RX handshake with the computer, and the 3 others RX (listened to) the information, but the TX lines back to the computer were open ( not reporting back) at 9600 baud on RS-232 this WORKED really well for the Allen Bradley PLC's that I serviced for Rockwell Automation. Was a great job there until laid off in 2001 after almost 7 years working as an ET and my job went to Mexico and I decided to stay in the USA even though given the option to relocate to Mexico and lead the service department down there. I took option B which was teach others how to do my job and take a $5000 bonus and severance package
Hi,
Thanks for your reply. The POS system we wrote in an old MS DOS data base language.
It runs under NTVDM in XP. I have one desktop with a COM port. A device plugs into this. I send 'echo "UUUU" > com1:'  and this device triggers the cashdraw.
The second machine is a laptop without a com port. I have a usb device from the same manufacturer which makes a virtual com port. Don't know why but this device shows up as com4. Echo UUUU > com4: and it triggers the drawer. I asked the manufacturer if I could use some sort of splitter to use the two triggers on one drawer.  He was most UNIMPRESSED and thought one trigger current will feed back and damage the other trigger. He SUGGESTS 'using a share of the resource over the network. Which leads to this question.
GeofflFor this kind of hardware hacking, make sure all equipment has a common ground. Do not depend of just the power plug. Run a earth (ground) SHIELD wire to all equipment.  Otherwise, small leakage currents and burn out serial ports. A shield wire is normal practice  in serial port wiring. But run an additional wire to be sure. A flexible #18 is good enough for this. It ties the chassis of all units together. It can be a insulated wire, exposed where needed. Put it under a screw.  Quote

This is why if this were NOT a serial connection you would want diodes on a custom made Y cable.

But since you are using Serial Communications direct from PC and NOT a 24VDC trigger off of a piece of Point of Sale Hardware, you are dealing with serial and I would buy a splitter from B & B Electronics or another merchant. This device has a common shield which Geek-9PM pointed out. Working with PLC's and industrial electronics I have seen what happens when a common shield is not used.

From my past experience when you ask for manufacturers to OK running their hardware differently, they generally avoid approving it and can only guarantee proper operation if you use the equipment as originally intended. For liability purposes  99.9% of the time they are not very helpful, however I was able to get some schematics once for a section of a Point of Sale system once to make a hardware alteration without trial and error. I was given the schematics with the statement of here is our circuitry and whatever alterations you make with it we are not liable for as well as may void the warranty. Hi,
Thank you so much for your interest.
Would the shield on the device from B&B be enough. Geek-9pm  seemed to be saying it should be connected to the computer as well.
From your answer I guess you can not  share a com port.
I am sure you did the right thing staying in the US.

I did not mean to discourage you. Having a common ground is standard practice in many industrial applications. POS installations can vary widely from one store to another. If all the equipment already has a common grounding system, ignore what In aid.
My remarks are  for amateurs doing a ad-hoc install. An install that has not been mapped out ahead of time.
For the record, serial chips used in PCs do NOT withstand any kind of abuse. The fail when exposed to voltages encountered with ungrounded equipment. Putting in a around wire is trivial as compared to the rest of then install. Traditional serial connectors are seldom wire  for 'hot swap' usage.
Also, using ungrounded equipment in a retail store violates most fire and safety codes. My issue is that the job is gang done by amateurs who give little thought as to the safety risk of  doing an merriment in a place of business.

Do I need to paint a picture? At the least, you will fry a laptop computer. At the other extreme people could be killed.
This may sound harsh. It is not harsh. It is a serious warming about doing hardware hacks in a place of business.

Solve : Is it safe to turn off auto protect on anti virus?

I FOUND that by TURNING off the auto protect on my Norton anti virus that it solved my shut down problem which was the PUTER froze up when I shut down, but is it safe to have your auto protect shut off when your puter starts up, I have cable connection and thought that - that kept you connected to the internet at all times, which makes me think I want auto protect on.. And if it is safe, is there another way around this "shut down problem" without having to turn AP on and off all the TIME?

Reinstalling the Operating System on Hewlett-Packard Pavillion Computers.

On some Pavilion computers, registration options may be hidden after a recovery has been performed. The registration screen should appear normally, however the lower options on the agreement form cannot be seen because they are below the screen.

To resolve the issue, use the following steps to continue past this screen and to accept the Windows Millennium licensing agreement:

1. Press and hold the ALT key then press the A key.
2. Press and hold the ALT key then press the C key.
3. Press Enter.

I have no idea if that will deal with the Blue-Patch issue you are facing but it seems to be worth a try.

Solve : hHP 650 will not respond?

Answer»

The printer is not communicating with the computer. I am running Windows 98 and have even tried reloading the drivers.
1. I have checked the LPT port and know it is working. It works with my cannon printer.
2. When the paper is loaded into the printer it does the self check and says "Ready to Print".
3. I have checked the cable, it works with the Cannon.
4. When I try to print a test page, the small busy light blinks once and that's all it ever does.
5. I have printed the demo color grid from the printer.
6. I have printed the internal setting page from the printer.
7. After about 10 seconds a printer folder error message comes on. ""The printer is out of Paper. Add more Paper"
8. I have tried to RELOAD the paper several times to just come back to this same error message.
I moved the printer to a new office I was setting up. Is it possible a memory CARD has come loose? Is there any thing I should check internally in the printer?
Any suggestions? Or do you know of a lead to good tech support for these printers?
when you plug in your printer, when you reboot, does win98 detect the new device?Well i DONT know if this will help u but i got somewhat of a similar problem like urs.
My printer is got a messed up paper sensor, and sometimes i get that its got no paper, even though its full of paper
so I think u got a paper sensor problem just like me, but for my case, my sensor sometimes work and sometimes it doesnt..

Solve : Copies and copies of copies!?

Answer»

:'(Windows XP.  I downloaded a game and I unzipped it to my desktop without creating a folder first and ended up with the  files on my desktop.  Oops!  I installed the game and later uninstalled it.  The files remained on my desktop.  I deleted these files, only to find that they had created copies of themselves.  I tried DELETING those as well (silly me!) creating more and more copies!  I now have lots and lots of copies, and they won't delete.  Rebooting the computer did not help.  My AntiVir PROGRAM does not DETECT a virus.  The only thing I can think it is that it might be is caused by the automatic system restore feature of XP that backs up files with EXE or COM extensions.
? HELP!
Was this a zip file and  you  unzipped it on the desktop in instead of creating a new folder to send it to...re-boot pc and delete them.......  ;)I found the answer.  When you delete files using the CTRL key and the mouse, and you do not release the mouse button COMPLETELY between highlights, then the file will copy itself instead of deleting!!  I found the answer.  When you delete files using the CTRL key and the mouse, and you do not release the mouse button completely between highlights, then the file will copy itself instead of deleting!!
Computer-gran.i was going to suggest that like drawing a big box around the files

To open this file, windows needs to know what program

After this a LINK to another page which says CDKNOW and refers to Microsoft Debug file.
I have been TOLD that pdb is Palm BASED format. I had used a Palm product previous to the IPAQ. I would love to know how to change the format for PPC. Any suggestions?  Go to cnet.com and search for handstory basic.

I am baffled: cable went out. had to shut down computer overnite. next day i tried to restart only to receive the message on a black screen: NTLDR IS COMPRESSED; PRESS CTRL /ALT / DEL TO RESTART. CAN'T EXIT THIS SCREEN! When I go to system recovery console it doesn't WORK, for I dont have bootable/recovery disk (mea culpa)!!! I want to see if maybe I can try to get into Safe Mode, but I've tried every F command I can think of & NOTHING works. HELP Please. My Friendship forever. What do you mean by cable went out? Powercut or surge? My Mama was PUTTING up Xmas decorations and poked the cable with a stick pin. We could not find the offending pin until the next day. The cable company had told me to keep my 2 computers shut down until they figured out what was wrong. Nothing happened to my older model, but my HP a206x just went dead. It is relatively new computer--bought just 8 mos ago. I am sure that my Windows XP settings must have been affected in some way, but I lack sophistication and training in such matters; therefore I make an EDUCATED guess only. Solve : IRQ's Sharing??

Answer»

Ok, I was told that my Graphics card and Sound card sharing IRQ could be the cause of my freezes/errors in 3Dgames. I checked if they were sharing IRQ's and I think that they are, because in DEVICE Manager under the resource tab its got this

Resource Type             Setting
IRQ                                 5

For both of them. I'm not sure but since they both have the same IRQ, does this MEAN they share data or something, could this be the cause of my freezes/errors?your graphics card should irq 11   remove it from the device manager and re-boot win should allocate it another irq...if win has a problem with it..type dxdiag in the RUN BOX.......to test graphics......and check that your system is not overheating...........and try the hardware accellerator slider.......knock it down a BIT........and check you have the correct graphics drivers from the makers of the card.
rad/navida etc......
