Solve : Please Help, Sound Card Problems?

Answer»

Hello EVERYONE, im usually good with comouters, but this time i just don't know.
I formatted my computer, everything is good, i'm on the internet, chatting, then i realize i have no sound, and if i try to OPEN a program using sound it says i don't have a sound device. I tried going to device manager and reinstalling the driver of "Multimedia Audio Controller" bu i don't have the software. I just have the generic card that came with my computer, how can the computer just not read my card ANYMORE? plz help me, i love sound, and i need it.>do you have a sound car d to find out any problems type dxdiag in the run box...click the start button>runI ran that dxdiag, and went to sound. It says "No sound card was found.  If one is expected, you should install a sound driver provided by the hardware manufacturer."
I don't know what sound card  it is, is there a way to find out, if the computer can't even see it? I know i have a sound card because i was playing games, up until i formatted, which took an hour, and then all of a sudden nothing. Should i buy a new sound card? and if so what do u recomend that's affordable?William Palumbo......Well you could dash out and buy another sound card......but wait !.....why not look in your device manager and see what sound card you have and then......visit Driverquide.com and D/L the necessary drivers and what has been misplaced will be heard.

let us know how you make out

dl65
Ok, i went to device manager and looked, i have these things under sound, video ang ame controllers:
Audio Codecs
Audio Codecs (yes TWICE)
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs
Under Other Devices I Have:
Ethernet Controller
HP Deskjet
Multimedia Audio Controller
SM Bus Controller

Im no soundcard buff, but none of those sound like card models. I'm not even sure what driver to install, let alone which of them to install to.
Thanks for bearing with me guys, i really appreciate the help
William Palumbo.....Can you tell us what MOBO you have and which operating system are you using.  I'm a little suspicious that you do require another sound driver ......I dont think MS supports legacy any more .

dl65 I couldn't figure out what kind of motherboard, I think mabye Intel 82801ba/CA PCI Bridge - 244E (?)
Im running:
Windows XP
p4 2.6ghz
512mb RAM
128mb GEFORCE FX 5200
40gb HDDWilliam Palumbo......Reboot your pc .......look carefully as it boots up ...the MOBO should show up on the first screen up new the top, I think . Is your sound card is integrated ( on board)?

Install proper soundcard drivers..I restarted, it went from intel screen, to windows screen with the loading bar, so i don't know what mobo is is. Yes it is integrated, i bought this comp a year ago, and the hardware is already completey OUTDATED?

and the hardware is already completey outdated?

You'll have to get used to that.

The name of your mainboard should be printed on the print circuit. Usually in white letters and most likely near the PCI slots. However, that varies per mainboard.

Solve : ntoskrn.exe missing or corrupt?

Answer»

Hello everybody.
I have here a Dell d600 laptop running on win xp pro sp 1.  the user CAUGHT a virus (most likely bkdr_sub7.210) and brought the machine to me.  When I tryed booting the machine it brought the following error MSG:

windows could not start because the following FILE is MISSING or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.
Please re-install a copy of the above file

The machine is not connected to the internet for now.

I have tried using the recovery console to copy a new version of the file to its intended location (C:\windows\system32).  I have run bootcfg \REBUILD and chkdsk \r.

the bootcfg\rebuild and chkdsk programs report an unspecified error on the partition which make rebuilding impossible.

Has anyone here encountered a similar problem and found a solution?

Regards BragiI have also tried booting using the last known good configuration.  It gave no results.
Regards
BragiNTOSKRNL.EXE is missing or corrupt.I had OF COURSE tried all those things before I posted my request for assistance.  Maybe I should have stated that in a clearer manner.

I have solved the problem in the worst possible way: reinstalling windows xp and thereby losing data.  Luckily the user saved most of his work on a central disk.

Solve : NDISHLP.SYS and booting up?

Answer»

Hello, I think this is the right forum to ask my question, but if it's not, the admin can move it.

Anyway, I have Windows 98, and my computer is about 6 years old.

Several days ago I went to turn on my computer like I always do, and instead of booting up normally, it rebooted in safe mode. I tried rebooting it several times with the same result.

After looking around the internet, I discovered the help section here and figured out it had something to do with a transport driver (??) CALLED NDISHLP.SYS, and that it is linked somehow with another THING called IFHLP.SYS (?)

The help section is a little bit over my head, as I don't do MSDOS or other programming lines and I wasn't able to get directions about what to do with my exact problem. I do have both files....I did option #7, safe mode with command prompt, and it said that both files are there in the computer. They are not missing; NDISHLP.SYS just won't load, and therefore the rest of the computer won't load. I don't know what else to do, so I came here. Hopefully someone will be able to help me. Thanks in advance.
scanreg/fix or scanreg/restore or scandisk /all try the first command first...at the A:\ prompt...so is A:\ scanreg/fix                  and so on..................one of them will do it...hthHi, thanks for replying..where should I go to put in the command? Can you post the exact error message, please.Ok... I went and used step by step confirmation while booting up, and it said:

C:\>c:\windows\net start
c:\windowsnet start [enter=Y, esc=N]?Y
Invalid value for BINDING specified
Invalid value for binding specified
Error loading device driver NDISHLP.SYS.
Error 7323: One or more network transport drivers FAILED to load.

Hope that helps. Thanks.Question do you have a modem or network card in your pc.....? if the answer is no thats why you are getting that message.......if the answer yes i do have one of those...use a boot disk...Well, my computer is connected to the internet through a D-Link wireless network...the main controller box is with the other computer that works fine (this one) and the computer that doesn't work has an internal D-Link card...

Could you explain more about the boot up disk I should use? Thanks.either swap the network card from the pc thats working to the one this is not? this will prove its not a network card but a windows problem....go back to  where you chose step by step confirmation  and answer yes to all...you will end up at the a:\type scanreg\restore after it..Ok......I can't switch the network cards because the main card is a external box, and the one that is in the computer that is not working is a internal one. I don't know how to switch them.

Also, I tried to do the step by step confirmation and said yes to all.....got the error message again in the middle of it, did the yes to all of the drivers, and then it tried to load. I didn't see any a:\ anywhere so I could type in scanreg\restore...where is it supposed to be?what command prompts do you get a:\   or c:\   what is on the screen now....I get c:\, which is the hard drive...a:\ is my diskette drive, which I can't use anymore..I have an external floppy drive now which might be something like E:\. Anyway the prompt that shows on the screen is c:\.Oh right, should I be using command prompt/safe mode command prompt instead of step by step confirmation?type this after the c:\scanreg/restore      and chose the last good cab file......answer yes at the first screen that pops up...Hi, I just wanted to say thank you so much for your help...I did what you told me to do, went to safe mode command prompt, typed in scanreg/restore and picked the most recent cab file at the top of the new screen, and presto! I got my computer back. I'm so grateful!

Solve : display upsidedown?

Answer»

I dropped a pile of bookes on my keyboard while RUNNING xp, screen display is now inverted. Our helpline are still working on a PROBLEM that they have not come across before and have no idea at PRESENT of cure.First you said it was your friend.. Go waste other people's time..has someone made a copy of  you desktop and turned it upside down and chose it as a background for a laugh I WOULD take a look at your monitor handbook. Some monitors allow you to invert or mirror the image and some allow you to turn the flat panel through 90° whilst keeping the image upright so that you can work in PORTRAIT screen mode. Some video cards allow this too. Mine does, although just why you would want that is beyond me.
Check your monitor settings, video card settings, or just turn your monitor upside down It is used on rotatable monitors or on wall-hung monitors where the presentation of the monitor may look better if it is hung "upside-down". i.e. rotated 180°

Often used for display units and other purposes.Anything in Display Properties, Settings, Adapter, List all modes?

Solve : Nothing to click on?

Answer»

I was removing a program called "Sidefind" and then all of a SUDDEN anytime I clicked on a icon it couldn't open it. I tried using cntrl-alt-del, after it rebooted it then went to the windows 98 SETUP and it told me to use my product key. I punced in a key and now my screen has no programs. I softboot again and when the screen is finally turned on the screen shows that explorer has created an illegal operation and will shut down. I click CLOSE and there are no programs on the screen. I try cntrl-alt-del and it shows no programs running. Anyone out there can help me? I even tried using "Safe Mode" and it still has no programs on the screen. I am using an IBM Thinkpad 390x with windows 98.
Boot to a DOS prompt and type: scanreg /RESTORE , and choose a registry entry before this event occured then press Enter. Thanks a lot.  Your help was greatly appreciated.  But do I have to check if there is anything wrong with the computer?  for example virus check, scandisk or anything like thatAlways scan for Viruses, Trojan Horses and Spyware after you experience problems with your computer.

Solve : display inverted?

Answer»

A friend dropped a pile of books on her keyboard and the screen display inverted. Our helpline had NEVER had this problem and are still working it. any ideas. Windows xpWhat do you MEAN by screen inverted?may have upset the video settings.....Nvida has this function to turn display settings 180% Quote

may have upset the video settings.....Nvida has this function to turn display settings 180%

Like I said in he other thread for this   Mine does that. Quite why I'm really not sure. Although I did once confuse a friend by pretending it was completely normal and just using my computer near perfectly (took me almost all day before he arrived to get used to it)Thanks for the advice but problem not solved. Latest advice is to delete display adaptor reboot and allow windows to re initialize the video card. No one seems to know of a series of KEY combinations that WOULD have this effect. The monitor is completely usable and is normal if turned upsidedown but a BIT unstable on the desk without it's stand.Anything in Display Properties Settings, Adapter, List all modes?

Solve : Volume Icon?

Answer»

The volume icon is missing from task bar (Windows XP). When I go to Control panel, Sounds & Audio devices and click the box "place volume icon on task bar" I get the following message: "Windows cannot display the volume control on the task bar because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it use add/remove programs in Control Panel". Can some kind person tell me how to do this?reboot pc and hold down the f8 and chose the last good config.....and type dxdiag in the run box and test for sound...it may report  other things as well...vector.....If you click start /search ........then enter "volume control" in the all files and folders .......all or part of the file name.....you will find it . When you have it right click and create a shortcut.

dl65
Thankyou merlin_2 and dl65 for your prompt RESPONSES. I have tried both and neither works for me. Holding f8 while rebooting just rebooted in the normal way. Searching for volume control found nothing so I am still stuck with problem.what is the make of this pc?....the f8 key when held down on most pcs  normally drags up the safe mode screen options....when booting........try again...hold down the f8 key.?Strange. I suppose that you do have a sound card in the computer?

What happened to me, about two years ago, when moving this computer from one room to another, was that the sound card fell out of its slot in the motherboard because the OEM had not fitted a retaining screw to hold the card firmly in place.

I would disconnect from the power supply and unplug your modem and printer, etc. take of the left-side panel and lay the computer (if a tower) on its right side on a carpeted floor. Then see if the sound card is properly in its slot in the motherboard.

Take it out and put it back in again in any case and make sure that there is a retaining screw fitted.

You could re-seat the RAM module(s) whilst you are in there and if you have less than 1024Mb of RAM you might want to use the opportunity to check your RAM MODULES serial numbers and possibly order some more.

XP can use up to 4 x 1024Mb of RAM and if you run dxdiag and can see that there is a paging file, when all of your programs are running then you NEED more RAM anyway.

More RAM = less paging file, and as RAM is faster than using the paging file your entire system will become faster and more responsive and less likely to hang or freeze up.

Just make sure that you take proper anti-STATIC precautions, don't wer static producig clothing and hold the bare metal with your left hand whilst PRESSING in the start-button with your right hand to equalise and standing static voltage acrosss the circuitry before touching anything inside.

You can use an anti-static wrist-strap and crocodile clip too but they are rather tedious to use.

Solve : What's This Thing Doing??

Answer»

Hello everyone!

I'm experiencing a very irritating problem on Windows XP Home. When I start up the machine, everything works fine. But when I put my cursor over a program, it will open multiple windows all by itself. I don't even have to click on it and it will start reproducing itself. The only way to stop it is to manually shut down the machine. I've tried CHANGING the mouse (went from a wireless to a cord and back again) and I've even reformatted my HARD drive. That only temporarily solved the problem until I started loading in my new software. Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks alot!

GinaMaybe some of your software is causing it? Try a virus scan and only install the minimum you need to try and find out what's causing it. If you have TIME, install one thing at a time, wait a while and see when it HAPPENS.Scan for Viruses, Trojan Horses and Spyware.

What kind of 'multiple' programs? It could be one of your enter keys on your keyboard is some how depressed and when you highlight an icon it continually opens that program. Try changing key boards. One word..... TROJAN

[GLB]Flame[/glb]Are using firefox?
Have to ask, What has Foxfire got to do with this problem???
 Meant  Firefox, sorry.Hello!
Thanks for all the replies guys! Here's what we tried:

We erased the hard drive ONE MORE TIME, took out all superfluous programs (like games and such) and wiped the slate completely clean. Everything was fine for a few days until the problem I described began yet again. Finally, we decided it had nothing to do with software and it couldn't possibly be a virus since the computer was completely clear. I changed the mouse from a cordless to a cord and the problem has been "solved" ever since.
If anything new happens, I'll be sure to let you guys know. Thanks again!maybe the cordless mouse did not have the drivers?Have to ask, What has Foxfire got to do with this problem

Solve : keyboard locks up?

keyboard locks up and UNABLE to type.  Mouse and cursor work ok.  have erased hard drive and reinstalled windows XP.  Problem was nonexistant but has returned.  Rebooting solves the problem for a while but all of a sudden the keyboard locks up.  Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!Scan for viruses and Trojan Horses.Just for kicks, the next time this happens press the Windows key (between Ctrl and Alt). Strangely, there is a bug which locks up the keyboard when you press the key a certain number of times under certain conditions.

Thank Microsoft computers aren't boring... Have you installed any drivers that have come with your keyboard?

Solve : How do I find "hidden" running programs??

Answer»

When I run defrag (Windows ME), a MESSAGE comes up telling me that programs are running in the background, thus slowing the process to a crawl.  Normally, I shut everything down 'cept explorer & systray. Where are these other programs? arrrrrrrgh!MAYBE the screensaver?is causing the defrag to not go beyond 10%I have my screensaver disabled. That WAS a problem b4 that I managed to figure out (much to my surprise!). I'm thinking it could be spy-ware of some sort lurking around that Ad-Aware hasn't been able to catch. Any thoughts?options right click on the c drive properties click and the click the tools tab ...lanch scandisk...this will check you boot files...the try defrag again...and uplug pc from the net and DISABLE the firewall/anti virus programs if the applies to you? and any others lurking on the bottom task bar....or reboot pc hit the f8 key...safe mode...and run defrag from there or from c:\windows            in the msdos mode....c:\windows defrag     some anti_virus programs running would also stop defrag...Running defrat from safe-mode or DOS would be best. Less likely to get distrubed. Or you could buy a defrag tool that lets other programs run in the background. I use Diskeeper and I've noticed a giagantic increase in my computer's performance. I now defrag every day and it takes about 5 mins, seriously. The cause of defrag failing with ME is System Restore which is always running unless you disable it totally. It can also be cause by your anti-virus program or by Trojans on the system.

But, as the System Restore function will always cause this problem unless disabled or you defrag in safe mode it is FAR better to use ScanDefrag 5·0 which will run cleanmanager, scandisk and defrag automatically for you with the choice of shutting down the computer when the maintenance run is finished or re-starting.

So all you have to do is to run ScanDefrag and switch the monitor off, go make a coffee and by the time you have finished drinking it, the computer should be fully defragmented.

ScanDefrag does all this in Windows pre-loading mode so that other programs cannot interfere with the PROGRESS of scandisk and defrag, in the same way that scandisk runs after a bad shutdown ... before allowing Windows to LOAD.

You really need to start over Rosy. What is the make of your computer and do you have an original XP CD or is it an OEM installation?

If you do have an original XP CD and you have a friend with a computer and a good CD Burning program you should use their machine first of all to make yourself a nex XPSP2 CD by using AutoStreamer 1·0 (freeware) before attempting to clean install.

If you download AutoStreamer to a WORKING computer and also download the 266Mb SP2 file from the Microsoft Download site, start AutoStreamer and put your XP CD in the CD-ROM drive. AutoStreamer will identify your XP CD and then ask you to point to the downloaded SP2 file.

It will take about 25 minutes to merge the core files from your XP CD together with the updated SP2 files and will produce an .ISO file from which you make a NEW XP CD which has Service Pack 2 integrated into it.

You need a good quality CDR (DON'T use a CD-RW!) and you'll need to choose to burn a CD-ROM (ISO) in the burning program.

This new CD will be bootable just like your XP CD and you should see all the folders and files on it just like your XP CD, so the idea is NOT to - copy - the .ISO file to a CD you MUST choose to burn a CD-ROM (ISO)

Sorry to holler at you but it is a common mistake that folks make.

Take another CDR with you and download and then burn to the CDR these programs, AVG Free Edition anti-virus, (You'll need to use that coputer's email to get the activation code for AVG) Zone Alarm Free Firewall, SpyBot SD, AdAware SE and SpywareBlaster. (No activation codes NEEDED for any of these programs.)

NOW you should be able to start over wxith a clean installation.

SO boot to the newly burned XPSP2 CD and choose to delete all old partitions.

Then make a new 8192Mb drive C: to install XP to.

You can make up to three further Logical drives if you want to.

E.G. I have an 80Gb drive which has 80,000,000,000, Bytes (This is known as the decimal size.)

To get the Binary sizes you have to divide by 1024 three time to get:

78125000,Kb , 76293,95,Mb & 74,51,Gb

I use a 8192Mb drive C: for the operating system and all programs. (Exactly 8·0Gb)

A 8192Mb drive D: for the My Documents folder.

A 3072,Mb drive E: for Email and the rest as an archive drive and for all my music files. (Exactly 3·0Gb)

When you have formatted your new drives with NTFS, you can begin installing but ENSURE that your computer is NOT connected to the internet until the installation is complete.

Formatting DIRECTLY to NTFS makes sure that you get optimised cluster sizes of 4096 bytes per allocation unit. It also should produce unfragmented Master File Tables and both of these factors will make your computer run better (faster) as will sufficient physical RAM. 1024Mb is a good figure for XP as it means that your system will rarely use the paging file and as RAM is faster than using the paging file your system will become much more responsive.

For user passwords I only ever use - user - and this gives me the title of Administrator for this computer. (XP Professional.)

When you have re-installed XP you should then install AVG anti-virus and Zone Alarm firewall BEFORE you go on-line.

When you do go on-line UPDATE the AVG anti-virus program FIRST of all, go OFF-LINE and run a full scan.

Then install SpyBot SD , AdAware SE and SpywareBlaster , update them all and run scans with SpyBot & AdAware BEFORE you do any more installing.

If the system comes up clean then fully update the XP Operating System.

When all is well you can add all your other programs, and when everything is running perfectly I would advise you to use a drive imaging program, such as TeraByte Unlimited's Image for DOS, to make a drive image of drive C: burned to good quality CDRs to use in future to be able to do a FULL recovery if you have any problems in future.

Your data should remain safe on drives D: , E: & F:

Using the new XPSP2 CD will give you a much cleaner installation and means that you have for less updating to do. Your systrem should be trouble free if you maintain your security and scan regularly for Trojans as these are what start the problems on your system drive, often attracting and allowing viruses to enter your system.

If you use Diskeeper 9 Professional which can be used with both XP Home and Professional editions, you can defragment the paging file AND the Master File Tables (MFTs) and you can also use Frag-Shield which comes with DK9 to ensure that the MFTs are the right size so as to prevent fragmentation, all of which helps to keep your system running smoothly. Quote

It's a HP hard drive and yes I was disconnected from the net. I used the XP disc to try to reinstall it but the disc got stuck in a loop and it wouldn't install so I downloaded the 6 recovery discs from the MS website and I used this before I used the XP disc again. It is working OK but it is running so slow. It takes about 5 mins for the machine to boot up each time I switch it on.Are you using SpyBot SD , AdAware SE and SpywareBlaster? I also use CCleaner and EmpTemp to keep the junk files down to a minimum.

Did you format to NTFS? XP runs better if you format directly to NTFS and don't ever use FAT32 formatting and especially NEVER convert a volume from FAT32 to NTFS.

(Although I was lucky once and got the right NTFS cluster size, as the drive was formatted to 4096 bytes with FAT32, you can get real small 512 byte clusters and this will make the machine as slow as molasses. If the MFT is fragmented, or too small, it will be even worse.)

Just to check your drive's cluster size open a DOS window and type: chkdsk , and press Enter. You should see a line which says:

"4096 bytes in each allocation unit"

Maybe some of your RAM has failed. How much RAM do you have in there, that install time (two days) says that there is probably something wrong there.

When was the LAST time you blew the dust out of the cabinet and checked to see if all the fans are running properly?

It helps after a couple of years just to pull out the RAM modules and put them back in again just to re-seat them.

Maybe get a computer shop to test them for you or run DocMemory on them from a DocMemory bootdiskette.this may or may not apply to you but>http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/oem/hppavilion/hp_pavilion_xppc.htm

try holding down the f8 key on boot and chose the last good config....if the above fails....the loop maybe caused by a corupt/driver/ registry.....or trojan/worm an online scan can may help>http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.aspSimilar to some Packard-Bells but as far as I know this just quick-formats the drive and you lose all your data.

Is there a means of making up a Master CD set, with HP as there is with Packard-Bell and then recovering the hidden sector for use as part of the hard-drive.

When you make the three Master CDs with a Packard-bell system you find that the hidden sector is revealed. (There is another hidden sector, btw which contains OEM info which is placed by the PB tattooing process.)

This Master CD hidden sector appears as drive D: and is labelled "Restdone" .

When you next do a clean install you need to delete this partition with fdisk and delete the primary DOS drive and re-partition as the Restdone drive D: is not stable and you'll end up with one drive C: if you just go ahead and restore the single drive.

When I made up these Master CDs on an iMedia machine with XP, I was then able to partition the drive format all partitions and use the Master CDs to install XP Home and Packard-Bell's Smart-Restore only, so that I could apply SP2 from a Free SP2 CD.

After adding firewall and AV updating and scanning I could te-hen update the operating system, add any Packard-Bell software that was still usable (and needed) and then image the drive (an 81982Mb drive C:) making three more CDRs to use to do a full install.

Does anyone have experience of HP and being able to do this at all?

Solve : Why does Ram Decrease the Longer I use My PC?

Answer»

Howdy
I use Xp home and have 512megs of ram-my question is when I am online the
longer my computer is on the lower the available ram is, lets say I dont use any
other PROGRAMS but my browser(avant) when I get online my free ram is about
330 megs and after 4 hours of surfing it gets to about 260megs of free ram,is this
just the way windows works? I have no virus or spyware.
Thanks
Rod
Programs and the operating system use RAM to store data for fast access while the computer is running. Web browsers, particularly newer versions, are notorious for generally using high amounts of RAM. What's more is that sometimes the RAM that is used is not properly freed when no longer in use (this is called a memory leak.) It is normal for free RAM to decrease when you have programs running, especially when running for a long time. If it bothers you, usually closing, waiting, and re-opening your web browser will free up some RAM for a while.

TL;DR: It's perfectly normal for free RAM to decrease while a program keeps running. Restarting the program or the operating system will free up most of this RAM, at least for a while. Thanks guys for the help
using avant I find if I minimize it I can see the ram increase-I wait then maximize it
and I have much more ram-I dont have a memory leak on yhis avant version.I find
that some days when I start my PC it varies.

I sometimes use a ram optimizer(I know most dont like those) but cleanmem
is the only one that REALLY works and it is freeware, just google it if you are interested,
they have an awesome forum and the devolper is really cool.
Thanks again
Rod
High CPU usage would be more alarming than having a system ram usage. See also swap file. Thanks Jason
I understand swapfile and my cpu useage is very low unless
I go to youtube-Yikes!

My computer does not slow down or get sluggish as the ram
drops.I am probably worried about nothing, when I start browsing
I have about 325 available ram and after a few hours that drops
to 290 or so of free ram-thats not too bad is it?

RodIt's not actually. But of course there is a big difference when your system is just reinstalled as this reading MAY lower. But the next solution after is add an additional RAM stick and you will be more satisfied. I got used to 512 Mb of RAM using XP years ago, but after using Win 7 on 4 Gig and above RAM, you will never want to run on XP with that low memory so I went to look for another stick just to compensate the speed you would get use to.Jason
what do you mean by It's not actually" - my pc never drops below that
and like I said it is fast as heck and not sluggish it is XP and it runs fine
just wondering why you think its not OK?I have had it drop to 20megs
using firefox and its still not sluggish!

Duly noted.

The Topic will stay intact.Microsoft originally designed Windows to operate on computers that were built with WAY TOO LITTLE actuall RAM.  Many companies put way too little ram in their PC's to get them out the door at discount prices, knowing that the Pagefile would pick up the slack, at a significant hit on performance.

When a program can't fully load into the available ram, Windows will shuffle it off to the Pagefile on the hard drive.  That's called "Virtual Memory".  The real problem with that is that the hard drive is the slowest part of your computer.  It's thousands of times slower than the Ram itself.

So the overall solution to the problem is to give your OS enough ram in the first place.  For any version of XP, you should try to get up to 2 gig's of ram.  Then use of the hard drive and the Pagefile will go down and system performance will increase.  I try to do this for all my customers, with OLD PC's, Windows XP and LIMITED amounts of RAM.

Memory optimizers just mask the problem, they don't FIX anything.  Those programs actually use up ram when they are running.
You're better off, to either add more ram to your computer, or minimize the TSR's and Services running in the background on your PC.

I do this stuff for a living and have for many years, so I know it's possible.

Good Luck,
Shadow

They didn't. "Way too little" in 2011 was "a lot of RAM" in 2001. Microsoft designed each version of Windows to run with what seemed like the amount of RAM an affordable PC was likely to have at the time of release. There were minimum amounts, and recommended amounts.
Thanks guys

Solve : Windows XP Administrator Function?

Answer»

When logged on as the computer administrator, is there a way to set SYSTEM settings for all the user accounts at once?  For EXAMPLE, can I set the power management settings for all user accounts?  The only way I know how to change all the power management settings for all accounts so they are the same is to change each ACCOUNT to computer administrator, MAKE the change and change the account back to limited account.

Why doesn't Windows allow the computer administrator settings to control?  For example, I set the power management settings to Hibernate in 2 hours, but if another user is logged in, even if a limited user, that users settings may control how the computer responds.http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q314984  you need to assign yourself the power user more info here>http://www.wellesley.edu/Computing/WinXP/wxpgroups.html#administratorThanks for the response.  I'm still confused.  I do understand about the different types of user accounts.  Currently on the PC, all the accounts are limited, INCLUDING the account I use day to day.  I've used the administrator account to peform system functions, maintainance, program installations, uninstalls etc.

My issue is that some of the system settings made via the administrator account don't necessarily override the settings in each of the limited user accounts.  For example, I've accessed power management via the adminstrator account and have set the PC to standby after 2 hours.  However, if the limited user accounts are not also set to standby after 2 hours, the PC may not enter the standby mode.  I noticed that the last user's settings often control.  The only way I've been able to ensure my intended settings are apllied is to change the limited user accounts to administrator or power user and then make the changes to the settings and then change the account back to limited user.

It seems to me to me that the settings applied through the administrator account are not applied globally.  Am I missing something or is that just the way XP works?

In other words, is there a way to use the administrator account to make changes via the control panel that will be applied globally and that will override whatever is set in a particular limited user or power user account?

Solve : Lenovo T60 boot issue?

Answer»

Hi all,

My Lenovo T60 laptop will no longer boot up. When being charged, the "plug" light shows that there is power but when I turn on the laptop, the light goes out and NOTHING happens. This had happened a couple of times before but I would just plug-power on-unplug-plug it in again, repeat about 3-10 times until it would boot. I have tried my old "solution" for about an hour and it doesn't seem to work anymore. Does anyone have a solution to this?

Thanks in advance! Have you tried with just the power adapter and/or just the battery? It could be ONE of those is causing the problem. If that doesn't fix it, I would assume you have a motherboard or power jack FAILURE. I take it there's no beeping, fans, spinning up, ANYTHING?The battery has been dead for over a year, I never bothered to replace it. So I always use it with just the AC adapter. After I hit the power button, there is no sign of life. No fan, spinning, etc... Just the little plug light goes off. I then have to unplug and replug the AC adapter in and the light goes back on.I would guess that the motherboard has gone BAD, I would take it into the shop and see what they say.

When I open the avi file in Media explorer, the ERROR is reportet in whic is saying that the file is used by another program. I can not find that another program.

I scaned for viruses by bit defender and ZA, but nothing., I log in in safe mode---- it is the same.Zone Alarm is not a virus scanner. - Does it ask you to let through certain connections originating from files you never heard of/donot trust?

Scan for spyware as well.

I've heard of Bit Defender before, but I THINK the name's dodgy. I'd get a proper virus scanner if I were you.

1.  Yes.
2.  Yes.  You can also rename it to something shorter.
3.  Your choice.  Start with 1024x768.
Try arranging your start menu's programs group into subfolders. For example, games, work... that should split it up and reduce its size without REMOVING any shortcuts.

LCD monitors are usually designed to be used at a certain resolution (usually the highest available) so look in its manuel, but basically it's your choice.THANX ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR EXPERT OPINION. how to make subfolders in start menu program?Right-click Start button, select Explore.  Under Start Menu is your Program List. Then go into the programs folder and you'll see the contents of the programs in the start menu. Go to File > New > Folder. Call it "Work" or "Games" etc. Now simply drag the folders and shortcuts of other programs into those folders. For example, drag the Microsoft Word icon into the Work folder...THANX ONCE AGAINTry right-clicking the Start-Button and go to Task Bar and Start Menu Properties, Customise, Advanced, scroll down the list and CHECK "Scroll Programs".

If you have three flat A4 panel monitors, preferably in portrait view, then you can have an in-box read screen, an out-box write screen and an application or help screen, and break up web-pages into page per screen. Need to be 19" plus monitors though.

You could do the same with a "briefcase" computer, like a laptop but with the screen hinging on its shorter side and two auxilliary monitors running off a docking bay, when using it as a desktop.

Bad design. If the computer itself had been kept horizontal you would have your CD-ROM drives, floppy drives and ZIP drives side by side right in front of your keyboard. And the CD-ROM drives could be top loading with a click down lid which keeps the pressure on the CD when running, or an expanding centre collet spindle to grip it.

With a deep horizontal design, where the keyboard is built in to the front of the computer, connections to the mobo are easier as the mobo is lying flat and the heat from the CPU, also lying flat, rises, and just needs air drawing over it.

They even "design" CD-ROM drives where the hot microchips are placed on a printed circuit board where the board is placed UNDER the drive so the heat goes into the drive and fries the chip instead of rising upwards  away from it.

Never heard that hot air rises I guess.Well seeing as most of you are going all Open-Source on us by using the Firefox browser, why not GO the whole HOG and use Linux? Or change how Windows looks by using Litestep?

Before this problem happened, did you have a virus scan PROGRAM, or firewall installed? You might have picked up a nasty WORM......

You will have to obtain an operating system as you can NOT own a computer without one.

If the HDD went bad he wouldn't have seen any cursor flicker at all.. Run diagnostic software if you want to be certain that it is not failing.if its a bad hard drive would it still be picked up in the bios, meaning would it still show up at all?

because my hard drive still shows up in the bios.

i hope thats not the case...  i REALLY couldnt afford 1 now...Is it reliable to just per-say download windows xp? Quote

You can obtain diagnostic software from the HDD manufacturer's website.

If the BIOS is still detecting your HDD, that means it is still  functioning.

As for attempting to repair Windows XP:

  • Upon boot, press F8 and select 'Last known good configuration'
  • Boot into safemode and attempt to scan for Viruses, Trojan Horses and Spyware from there
  • Obtain a Windows XP CD and run the repair option

thanks dudes ill check that out.
If you have the XP CD Key on a sticker on the machine, you can get a friend with the same version of XP to burn you a backup copy of the Windows XP OS CD. The sticker and CD Key represent the licensed OS on the machine.

You can also use Linux free. Start with a Knoppix LiveCD and run Linux from your CDROM, and see if the HD took a powder or if it is just some glitch... The Knoppix LiveCD includes some good hardware test tools.but thats the problem i dont have any friends with the OS
did you try>Upon boot, press F8 and select 'Last known good configuration'  raptors suggested......?link>http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?dn=1027295....or try ctrl/alt del...see what happens....if this has a ibm travelstar hard drive......then thats it....hook it up to the mains adapter...Every computer, including dell, should come with a back up recovery, reformat disk. I don't have the XP cd either but I used a three disk series to reformat my messed up computer. Quote

That's why there are stores that sell operating systems..

F8 didnt respond.....

Does anyone know the commands in MS-Dos that are needed to make a non-bootable cd load (persay a  burned xp copy..)? i have a ms-startup disk and need the commands to run the Xp cd. Any help is appreciated.

Solve : Should I upgrade from windows xp to windows 7??

Answer»

Info:

ram at 1.0 GB
Hard drive at 80 GB
intel pentium 4
Current OS: Operating XP

Thanks

If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:
1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (X86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

So the answer is - 'If you want to' ......but i'd get more RAM first.

Run the windows 7 upgrade adviser that can be FOUND at: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/upgrade-advisor
Make sure you BACKUP anything you want too KEEP as windows xp to 7 is a clean install. Meaning you will have no data if you don't back it up. also the upgrade adviser can tell you if your ptrinter and other devices will work with windows seven. If you have all the devices plugged in at the time of the test, it will provide that information as well. If you do not want to upgrade ram stay with xp as xp works fine with 1gb, but windows seven works a lot better with more ram, even though it says 1GB is fine, I WOULD not upgrade if I was unable to upgrade ram..

My sisters computer is having problems, i know its a virus but im not sure what to do. I scanned it with norton antivirus 2005 and it found 90 viruss, it got rid of all but 5 which keep coming back. The 5 are all noted to be adaware. The virus wont let me run liveupdate, go to nortons website, or go to any other website that has to do with removing virii. What can i do to fix this prob?Get adware/spyware removers. Free good ones are SpyBot search & Destroy and Lavasofts, Ad-Aware Personal. They are both free. I don't remember the sites for them but just google it, it will usually be the first hit.If there are files you can not remove, scan in safemode.OK well i had al those progs and i RAN everything in safe mode, adaware found and deleted 132 items and seek and destroy found about 15 of them and killed them, norton now says that there are no viruss when i run it in safe mode. I think that whatever it is is new and has hijacked the windows host files, when i run liveupdate it says
"LU1860: LiveUpdate has detected a potential security compromise on your computer: ONE or more entries for Symantec LiveUpdate servers exist in your Windows hosts files.

A malicious entry in your hosts files could prevent LiveUpdate from retrieving updates for your Symantec products, including anti-virus updates. Generally, Symantec LiveUpdate server entries should not appear in your Windows hosts files." But when i hit the button to get rid of the host files it wont. What shout i do? Solve : I can't start my computer in any way?

I was on my computer, (a compact that uses windows 98), and a blue screen popped up and an error occured.  It would not let me restart it.  So I shut it off, Like i have done in the past.  Now whenever I turn on my computer it says, "opperating SYSTEM connot be found on any devices, press a key to try again"  If I press a key, it just says the same thing.  It apperars to be reading the floppy drive, if that is any help, Please help me finals are comming and so are thesis papers!!!Is your HDD still detected in the BIOS?

Have you changed hardware? Check to SEE if all the cables are properly connected. There wouldnt happen to be a floppy disk in the drive right??

[glb]Flame[/glb]I think your computer has realized a problem and is expecting a recovery BOOT disk. If you have one of those, then that's GOOD news. If not........um.......try hitting F8 or on startup and try to get into safe mode. I don't know.safe MODEL chose start windows normaly if this fails ....start windows with the command prompt...a:\ then after the prompt scandisk /all or scanreg/restore and chose the last good cabinet files........so the the commands are a:\scanreg/fix      or a:\scanreg/restore...    or load a boot floppy and try the commands ....and when windows is back from oblivion scan for the nasties of the net......

Solve : Problem in entering BIOS?

Answer»

Hey, could anyone please help that I wanna ghost my computer, but unfortunately , when i first bought this laptop, it has a password that prevent me entering the BIOS, i was unable to contact the seller because i bought it for a while, also, i cannot open my laptop to take the batter out because some of those screws were damage.

So what can i do to enter the BIOS, thank youHi,

Remove the BIOS password by simply removing the CMOS battery. Check this helpful link: How can I reset CMOS or BIOS settings?

If you cannot remove the screws, the best way is to bring your laptop to any computer repair shop. They might help you on that. Quote from: geek hoodlum on September 28, 2012, 10:26:44 PM

In a laptop? GOOD luck. Not only with removing the battery, but with the security feature on most laptops that persists the password even if the battery is replaced.uhm... first, is there any program that I could remove the password from BIOS,
How about this, if I ABANDON all the files and program in my current window, is there a way that i could ghost or format my window?

Thank you

oh, I see

Well, I think I need to give up and stick to my old trick, which is unplug the HDD and use a USB boot the system then restore it.

Thank you very MUCH guysI'm completely lost!

Why do you need to mess about with the bios to do a Ghost backup of the hard drive?  Or, what did I miss in the original post?

I Ghost backup hard drives all the time for my customers, and it never requires me going into the Bios.
It's the one and only Backup program I've used since 1997, before it ever became associated with Norton or Symantec.

What? I am also using Symantec, is this software work in normal windown mode? I explain my step to ghost a window, please advise me if there is a redundant step,

First, I enter in BIOS because I need to boot my USB drive instead of my hard drive

Once I am in my PE window in USB, I use the Symantec to ghost my system, and that is

So without entering in BIOS, I can't boot my usb hence cannot ghost my window

or do you guys normally create a recovery partition in your hard drive?

Thank youYou should be able to select a boot device without actually entering the BIOS Setup -- look for another key on POST that is not for the BIOS Setup program, this should be to select a drive to boot do.but i am using a laptop, it has only 2 keys for selection before entering to window, one is F2 which going to the BIOS, anther is F12, go to those network stuff, do you mean the F12, thanksIf you choose F12, do you get a choice between (for example) USB, Floppy, CD, Hard Drive, and Network? That's the boot selection menu.no, only network, the one you say is F2Then the solution in future would be to set USB as 1st boot priority and press F10 to save changes and exit...

All you have to do day to day is remember to not leave a bootable flash drive plugged in...simple.I am unable to enter in BIOS, how could I save changes to usb as 1st bott priority, do you mean in PE? if yes, please show the steps

the reason I can ghost my system is that I unplug my HDD and plug my usb in, so the mobo has no choice but boot my usb

Have you changed OS since the LAST time? 10 months is a long time... have you CHANGING any drivers, etc?

Also, scan for viruses and the like.I haven't changed the OS... really haven't done much of anything to the software ... I have performed a COUPLE of system restores, but that shouldn't affect much.

The system doesn't even recognize the games' icons on the desktop.. it has that generic window icon instead of the real icon.

Very frusturating... especially since it worked last time.

Solve : Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick Install Failure?

Answer»

While trying to install Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick, using their install wizard CD, for some reason the installation failed. Repeated tries also failed.  The only clue to the problem was a message during installation  to insert my Windows 98 2nd Edition CD to locate a file called "hidusb.sys"  which was supposed to be located in C:\windows\system\hidusb.sys.  The destination of the file was supposed to be c:\windows\system32\drivers\hidusb.sys=BASE5.CAB  This is all GREEK to me, but I did manage to conduct file searches for both c DRIVE and the Windows CD with negative results concerning hidusb.sys.  I've searched Logitech's home page for this file, and reviewed their download page, with negative results.  I've checked the Win 98 Control Panel under Joystick Options, and the Logitech is not listed.  I checked the Control Panel under System for the CONFLICTING Device List, and there are not conflicts listed.  I'm stumped, and would appreciate any help you can give me with this problem.  Thanks.  Mike.Have you tried selecting the option to pick a driver from the list?

Windows 98SE may not find the proper drivers if you tell it to auto detect. You probably have an OEM version of 98.

1.Insert the OEM Windows 98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent Windows Setup from starting automatically.

2.Click Start, and then click Run.

3.In the Open box, type SFC, and then click OK.

4.Click Extract one file from installation disk.

5.In the Specify the system file you would like to restore box, type the name of the missing file, and then click Start.

6.In the Restore from box, type the following line
drive:\Win98
where drive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive.

7.In the Save file in box, type the following line, and then click OK
drive:\Windows\System32\Drivers
where drive is the drive letter of the HARD disk on which Windows 98 is installed.

8.Click OK, and then click OK again.

9.When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.

Solve : RAMdisk - XP Pro SP3 32-bit Machine with 3GB Ram?

Answer»

There is an application that uses mySQL on a Windows XP Pro SP3 system with 3GB Ram. Was wondering if ANYONE had any suggestions on using RAMdisks Pros/Cons? Any suggestions on which RAMdisk solution to go with. Microsofts is limited to 32MB which wouldn't help much, but a freeware one can be set up to 2GB in size.

ACCORDING to this link it appears that it would help with large databases.

I was thinking that if I could allocate 1GB of the 3GB RAM to act as a Virtual Hard Drive I could drastically speed up some database operations which currently perform lots of Read/Writes thru the process. I was thinking that if I could perform all the Read/Writes in a Virtual Hard Drive in a RAMdisk, that I could relieve the physical hard drive of this burden and have the final result of the process then write to the hard drive in the end.

This system is part of a point of sale system which receives updates to up to 90,000 UPC's as information changes, the problem is that thru this process it appears that it writes for every single change to the hard drive which creates a Read/Write condition instead of just a write of the changes. So I was thinking that the RAMdisk could be used to hammer the changes out in Ram, and then perform a single write of all info to the physical drives that are running as RAID 0. The database is about 400MB in size according to the size of the daily backups from SQL Dump. So I am thinking that if the entire database is written to RAMdisk and then all processes performed against it in a 1GB virtual disk space, that I could then have an end process that copies an exact copy of this database then to the physical hard drives.

This system is powered thru a UPS so ODDS of a power interruption are very rare. If there was no power protection a RAMdisk would be a catastrophe ready to happen as for when power is gone all data is gone in RAM.

Was also thinking of going with a SSD, but why not just use system Ram to perform this quickly with RAMdisk, and System RAM is faster than a SSD to access info.Pretty much the only reason for using a ram drive is for a large, data intensive application. It seems like that's the situation in your case. Give it a shot and see what you think. You can always go back to not using it if it doesn't seem to work to your liking.Went with testing this RAMdisk on my spare computer at home first.

My Hardware when testing is:

Intel Core 2 Duo 6600 running at 2.4Ghz
2GB 533Mhz DDR2 ( single-channel )
160 GB IDE HD C:
Running on Windows 7 32-bit

Testing with RAMdisk FreeWare solution from this location:
www.arsoft-online.de

TEST RESULTS WERE EXTREMELY IMPRESSIVE with RAMdisk as shown in pic after graphed benchmark of RAMdisk + IDE HD + USB 2.0 Thumbdrive

*Going to test further with this. I made a 810MB RAMdisk. Only issue I see so far is having to format it after every reboot. And it does not support NTFS, only FAT32 works so far. At first I thought this would be just a solution for this database project. Now though I can see so many uses for this if it didn't have the 2GB limitation such as copy your entire game to RAM for instant loading everything WITHOUT wait time and lag from drive. A system with 16GB RAM and say 12GB of it able to be RAMdisk'ed could make for some sweet gaming..LOL ... so now on the hunt for games in my collection that can run within say a 2GB Hard Drive Space that have load times etc to see how they run on RAMdisk.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Found this link, Primo Ramdisk.
http://www.romexsoftware.com/en-us/primo-ramdisk/purchase.htmlThanks for the suggestion on Primo Ramdisk. I ended up trying out DataRAM Ramdisk Version 4.0.0 and its free to use up to 4GB in RAMdisk capacity. The AR Ramdisk that I tried I had bugs with it keeping the formatting on reboot for large capacity.

DataRAM Ramdisk 4.0.0 has been stabile through testing, with hammering it with jobs and reboots to try to see if it will act up. One benefit of DataRAM Ramdisk is that it allows you to store information on the RAMdisk, which is then written to your physical drive on shutdown. On start up, it repopulates all the information from this image file to RAMdisk so that data is not lost on shutdown. This causes windows to appear as if its slower to boot up, but its because before the desktop appears its populating the RAMdisk from the image file on startup. Once the image file has been pushed to RAMdisk windows desktop is up and quick.

A test process writing changes to database use to take 4 minutes 37 seconds of constant drive activity on this test database, and the RAMdisk trimmed that time down to 36.5 seconds. If I had a faster CPU/RAM combination it could be increased in execution speed faster than 35 seconds to completion.

Very happy with the results and will be buying this program since free use is home use and not corporate. So to be legal I will buy a copy and unlock the RAMdisk beyond the 4GB freebee limitation.

At a glance, the main issue I notice is excessive toolbars. Unless you really need or use them, I'd uninstall them. They aren't necessary.I deleted the log. Are you having some problem(s) with your system? If so, PLEASE explain in detail.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.4

Just like what Allan and quaxo asked you are you having an issue or do you have a question? you are not saying

I am with quaxo un-install the tool bars and you also need to un-install one of of your AV suites. It looks like you have AVG and Norton / Symantec you should have only 1 active AV at a time.

Please try to be just as descriptive as possible, hope to hear from you SOON. Mike
