Solve : No "move to" command in right click drop down menu in XP?

Answer»

My mother just got an external hard drive, and is trying to move files to it from her established drives.  I had thought the "send to" command would move the FILE without leaving a copy in the original place, but that's not what's happening.  I also had thought that there was a "move to" command in that drop down menu in XP, but I'm not seeing it.  While it's not impossible to just copy the files and then delete the originals, it seems like extra work, if there's a way to just move the STUFF over.  Can anybody tell me if A) my impression is a mistaken one, and then B) how one might add a "move to" option in that menu?HIGHLIGHT the files, then right-click on them and drag them to where you WANT then release the right mouse button and you should see the "move" command.Send To addon... ;DGREAT!  Thanks to you both very much! You're welcome Or, with no download...

Add Copy To / Move To to the Windows Explorer Right Click Menu

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows/add-copy-to-move-to-to-the-windows-explorer-right-click-menu/I'm GUESSING he just forgot to "right-click/drag" before looking for "move" Quote from: Allan on January 05, 2013, 05:30:18 AM

I'm guessing he just forgot to "right-click/drag" before looking for "move"

Like I evidently did... my muscle memory knows it; evidently the brain memory is not so reliable. As for CTRL-X and CTRL-V, let's not go there!

Solve : file not found?

Answer»

I'm USING a windows 98 and reccently when I start up a window pops up that says ' A required .DLL FILE,  C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHLWATPI.DLL, was not found After that another window pops up that says I need to reinstall windows. I've tried to reinstall it but the computer doesn't seem to realize the disc is there and it never opens to  set up, it just freezes on the error window. I'm not sure what to do and i'm very confused.... please help
jenniTry opening your run box, (Start >> Run) and type SFC and have it check for missing or damaged files, have the 98 disk available.trojan maybe run this scan>http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/  what browser version have you got?....if the above fails...go into the control panel and repair the  INTERNET explorer ...click the add/remove icon... scroll down the list now click on the internet explorer program...then click the add/remove button..a screen will APPEAR chose the repair option ...done... To reinstall Windows, you need to insert your startup floppy disk and restart. Then start with CD-ROM support. Now try reinstalling Windows. It should install over the top so no need to format. Does this solve the PROBLEM? on my xp machine i get the error" file not found" when i try to open any program, what could be the problem?

Solve : Unresponsive taskbar - permanent hourglass?

Answer»

I've RECENTLY encountered an error that has rendered my system pretty MUCH unusable soon after upgrading FIREFOX (maybe unrelated); whenever I log into my system (under the default username [Joshua]) it seems that the taskbar fails to load (the start button and system time do not load/display) and hovering the mouse cursor over it changes it to an hourglass. At times I am able to access files located on the desktop, though at times a Windows explorer error window will pop-up with explorer.exe listed as one of the files that 'will be included in this error report'.

When I boot in safe mode, there are two accounts, Administrator and Joshua. The problem does not exist in Administrator and everything appears functional, however the same can't be said when logging into Joshua in safe mode.
From safe mode I reviewed the event log for application logs, and it seems that everytime I log into Joshua, an application error is thrown with the following information:

"Windows cannot access the file C:\Windows\system32\usmt\migwiz.exe for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the program migwiz.exe because of this error." - I'm convinced this is the issue though I'm no expert.

I checked the location of this file an it exists, I attempted to make a copy of the folder to my desktop in safe mode; "Windows cannot read from source file or disk error", right-clicking the file prompts a Windows Explorer error window which when I inspect has an error signature of AppName: explorer.exe. Doing this also seems to reset explorer.exe while in safe mode.

What I've tried so far (will update, may have forgotten some items):
- Updated virus scan of the system with Malwarebytes
- Ran chkdsk
- Ended and restarted the explorer.exe
- Booted in diagnostic mode
- Changed the startup mode for SSDP Discovery Service to disabled
- Restored system to an earlier point before the problems occurred

I would appreciate any input into this problem, I've been stuck on it for the last 6-7 days . Let me know if there is any more information that I may provide (P.S. I'm posted/checking this thread from another system).
Have you tried (from safe mode) to do a restore to an earlier date (a date prior to this issue arising should do it)?truenorthYes. I've tried a system restore to approximately 2-3 days before the problem first occured. When it was complete I was informed that nothing had changed  .

Forgot to add this to the list of items that I've tried.Disable all but bare essentials from the start menu/disable your virus scanner/disable your ISP connection and try to restart the computer.truenorth
If at any time the problem ceases to exist please return to tell us what worked.truenorthThanks again for your input.

I disabled all startup processes from safe mode and restarted in normal mode (network cable unplugged as usual), the problem was still present. Another window explorer error occured (the one with Send/Dont Send etc), the files included to be sent in this report included:
C:\DOCUME~1\Joshua\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER455c.dir00\explorer.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Joshua\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER455c.dir00\appcompat.txt
(note the tilde was superscript)

p.s. The following processes were running from reviewing the task manager, nothing unusual/non-essential;
tskmgr.exe
drwtsn32.exe
explorer.exe
svchost.exe
svchost.exe
lsass.exe
services.exe
winlogon.exe
csrss.exe
smss.exe
System
System Idle ProcessTry using autorun.

Download Autoruns
After extracting, double click autoruns and go to File - Save - Filename : Autoruns
Save as type : Text. Copy and Paste the text on your next reply
When I opened the autoruns.exe via the command line nothing appeared to happen, (although a process for autoruns appeared in the task manager, no more than 2-3K mem usage).

I was however able to run the autoruns.exe as Administrator in safe mode:

Have you tried creating another user account (other than joshua) and logging in from there? truenorthThe problem persists on a new user account, the taskbar/desktop seemed responsive for just a moment before the hourglass appeared. Do you have an anti virus app installed? If so, did you run a full scan with that also?Try also disabling your Kaspersky Internet Security (Firewall and or real time protection) referring to Windows access error. What XP service pack do you use? Did you install any Topthinks screensaver for XP? Allan
Yes I have Kaspersky 2011 with an expired license, running a full scan at the moment, will update later (taking a while).

Jason
Service Pack 3. No Topthinks screensaver (was using an alternate in the past). I will attempt to boot without kaspersky internet security once the scan completes.

Will update shortly, thanks for the input. Quote from: jawa_dude on December 24, 2012, 12:37:12 PM

How are you running it and from where? And if it has an expired license it probably doesn't have the latest definitions. I suggest you create a disc from one of the links above.I ran the scan in safe mode with the Administrator account, no threats detected - scan took almost 15hrs.

Would a free anti-virus suffice (AVG perhaps) as I'm on a netbook and do not (currently) have any devices that I could boot from/would want to risk getting infected.

I disabled all of Kaspersky's protection services (from safe mode admin) and booted in diag mode, no change. Upon shutdown a End Now dialog appeared for the explorer.exe as it was unresponsive.Sure, try AVG - anything with current definitions. But please do NOT have more than one AV installed at the same time. If you are going to install AVG or Avira or something similar, you should uninstall Kaspersky first.

Solve : using a Batch comand to rename a folder in a batch file?

Answer»

Hi Gurus,

Need ur help to automate a process.

I am working on a process where i call .xml file using a .bat file. The bat file i use is my application utility file.

Now when i run this xml file using my batch file i get a folder in an export format.

Here my REQUIREMENT is that whenever the folder is generated it should have APPENDED in it the System Date along with the system name.

I just did some search on the net and found that i can call batch comands in the xml file ...

So needed the syntax to call batch rename command "ren" in my .xml file  which would rename the folder with system date included in it.

I was using something like this in my .xml code ...but that dosent works ...something is wrong in the syntax :

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <command name="Ren" sequence="1">
        <OPTION name="C:\DOCUMENTS and Settings\*****\Desktop\Folder1" arg="" />
        <option name="C:\Documents and Settings\*****\Desktop\Folder1_%date:~-4%%date:~4,2%%date:~7,2%" arg="" />

Solve : problem in network?

Answer»

Hello

Recently I have problem on using network/internet. Before that happening, I could surf web and download files from internet, I could update my antivirus (nod32), I could share files over my network. But recently, when I surf the web for learning Drupal and also testing it over local server (XAMMP), suddenly my network/internet is gone.
Now I cannot surf the web, download files, update antivirus and sharing files or folders. The green LED in front of network port is on but yellow one is off. Network notification in notification area shows

  • that indicate network cable is unplugged. I test the cable and DSL modem, but all of them work properly. I test my network device via Ubuntu Live CD and it work properly too. So, the problem is my windows XP Pro.

1. I restart my windows
2. I use "sfc \scannow"
3. I look at Process, Ports, Autoruns and Services via a-squared HiJackFree 3.1 and there are no unwanted applications or services.

But the problem stile remains.

Note:
Nod32 antivirus>Setup>Web Access PROTECTION, shows "Non-functional".

thanksIn Network Properties under Control Panel have you verified that the Network Adapter is ENABLED. If the adapter is disabled you will get this kind of problem.

If its enabled, type cmd at START Run and ENTER IPCONFIG/ALL and verify that the IP address is correct as well as Gateway etc. From here you can also ping to test such as ping www.google.com or ping 173.194.43.16 which is one of many of google's points of presence on the web.

If you find that your network adapter is enabled, set to dynamic or correct static IP CONFIGURATION, the only other thing I could think of is checking in device manager to make sure that the network adapter is ok and not showing any issues. Lastly, I'd kill the xammp service just in case that's conflicting somehow. I've never seen xammp cause a problem like this, however if you were using xammp as a web server with port forwarding etc for people to check out your webpage etc you could have been hacked since xammp is best for learning and testing locally and not for live web server use due to many security issues with it, mainly the default passwords or no passwords etc MAKING it allow all access both locally and remote.

thanks DaveLembke for your help

I do as you say but yet there is the problem.
also, I notice that i can not install or uninstall network adapter driver. when I want to install/uninstall the driver, the system slow down and "not responding" notification is appear.I'd perform a repair installation and see if that helps. Something sounds to be corrupt, and this should fix it. You will need to boot off Windows XP OEM disc and perform Repair Installation or use the media that came with the computer if you have a System Restore CD or DVD, they have an option to Repair install and this way your data remains and the issues with the OS are fixed.

Solve : my computer will not boot past the acer logo?

Answer»

I have an Acer Aspire asa85-uc521h desktop.  When I power it up it makes one beep and then displays the Acer logo. The fan starts and the lights flash but nothing. I have pressed del and f12 as instructed to no avail.  I have tried a boot disk but I think the bios is probably set to boot from the hard drive as it would not read it.  Since I cannot get in I cannot run safe mode or anything else.  I have tried to reset the bios by removing the cmos for a minute and then replacing it to no avail.  I have tried disconnecting the hard drive and the dvd/cd and I still get one beep.  If I pull the ram it screams with one long beep (over and over).  I put the ram back and it is back to its one beep.  I would appreciate any ideas.  Thanks,  Chef KenFirst I'd, Remove the laptops battery for a day and then plug the battery back into the laptop and try to boot it up. Have seen this help with failed POST boot conditions before.

If this doesnt help try the following:

If you can not get into the bios config by using the hot key, than it may be a system board issue. If you boot it off of the minimum, without hard drive installed, 1 ram stick only if it has 2 sticks, and it still hangs at the logo its likely a system board issue.

As far as laptops GO, the bios's these days are no longer easily reset by removing and reinstalling CMOS battery. They added an extra level of security to laptops that are locked by bios password etc to disallow resetting stolen laptop bios to no password by popping battery out or jumper or push button like desktop computers have. This unfortunately also took away the troubleshooting tool of bios reset! *The STUPID part of this bios lock feature is that if someone has stolen a laptop, they can always just pop the hard drive out and have the data anyways in less than 10 minutes unless encrypted.

I have also seen where if you change the parameters of the system you can unhang a bios error, such as adding additional RAM stick or decreasing the RAM count by installing a smaller amount of RAM without removing all RAM count so that the system has to confirm the hardware change and write that information back to flash as the newest configuration so you DONT get prompted again about confirming hardware.

My pc is a desktop but I tried your suggestions.  I disconneted the hard drive as well as the dvd/cd drive. I removed and replaced the cmos (after about 10 min). When I rebooted the system I heard the one beeb and back to the Acer screen.  Are there certain buttons I should try other than the del or f12 as directed by the screen?  I believe I have only one stick of ram (512 mb) and when I removed that and rebooted the pc it screamed like a banshee.  When I returned it to the slot and rebooted it, only the one beep and the Acer logo screen. Any ideas what to do next?  Any help would be appreciated.Single beep means POST is successful.  Remove any USB items; if it has a card reader, disconnect it from the motherboard, card readers are USB devices.

BTW, in ORDER to POST, you must have CPU, CPU fan, RAM (minimal is OK), keyboard, graphics card (onboard or separate). You may also on reviewing the above suggestion tap F8 repeatedly on re-boot to see if safemode loads properly...
Dont panic if it looks wierd...THATS normal.
Then we can determine it's a Windows issue...I have unplugged the card reader and have tried the f8 ( as well as numerous others) all with the same result.  I beep then logo screen.  I tried unplugging the dvd drive and the hd, also no change.  I pulled the ram out and it screamed like a banshee.  It calmed down when I re-installed and went back to it's usual one beep and Acer logo.

Solve : recording POST actions?

Answer»
How can I create a file or printout of the ACTIVITY during the POST operations?
XPPro SP3.
I am trying to SEE how the POST activities are seeing the hardware in my system. I particularly am interested in the HDD results. I have a separate PCI card (CSA649U) for ATA devices and the primary and secondary ports each have a master and slave connector.
I also have a SATA HDD (233 GB) with 3 partitions. My motherboard is ABIT NF-M25.
If I connect all my HDDs to the system I should have 4 drives on the ATA and one SATA with 3 partitions.
With the Diskette and 2 CDs I should have A:, C:, D:, E:, ETC.
I don't know which HDD is working

Thanks
The only options to capture the POST is to record it with another device such as a digital hand hel recorder (or) capture card on another computer or device to record the video output. The POST information happens before any programs can start from a hard drive installation etc. Its the absolute lowest level before higher level processes execute the boot and take over in which logging is available.

If you wanted to get a text based output you could capture the information as a digital image and then scan it with an OCR PROGRAM to output text from the digital image capture. But I haven't ever gone through such lengths to achieve this. Just stating that it is possible!

I usually just use my digital camera and freeze the frame that is in question if information is displayed at post too quickly to be read and the SCREEN can not be paused by the pause key etc.

Solve : Shortcut won't work?

Answer»

Hey all

I have a problem in Windows XP (Home Ed.).  Recently I've had a shortcut die on me, it first became apparent in a solitaire game (SOLO) where I couldn't redeal the game with CTRL-D, I had to go to the menu.  I thought it was that game doing odd things again.

Then the problem appeared in Powerpoint, where I regularly use CTRL-D to duplicate objects.  I can't do it now without using a menu.

I tried other shortcuts - CTRL-A, CTRL-B, CTRL-F, CTRL-C, CTRL-E, etc... even CTRL-SHIFT-D (which duplicates the whole current slide).  They all work fine.  CTRL-D on its own just refuses to work.

Can anyone please help?  I'd like my machine to be normal again!

Invader JeddaHave you set your keyboard to the appropriate language? From the Control Panel's REGIONAL and Language options:

My region and location is set to Australia.  As I said, this was working fine up until recently when CTRL-D just stopped responding.you have of course SCAN for bugs disable system restore?....have you tried..re-boot hit the f8 key on boot and TRY the last good config...have a look in the events viewer...control panel...click the admin tools icon...what keyboard is this a standard one ?I'm not sure if a system restore would do the trick - I'm more interested in other ways of trying to identify what's GONE wrong.

The keyboard is a standard notebook computer keyboard.  I have a Compaq Presario R3000.He told you to disable System Restore before scanning for Viruses, Trojan Horses and Spywre. Not use it.Have you checked to make sure the keys themselves are not physically broken? Quote

Have you checked to make sure the keys themselves are not physically broken?

The keys are fine.  Other CTRL shortcuts work (CTRL-A, CTRL-B, CTRL-C...), and the D key works fine.  I even tried CTRL-SHIFT-D and it works (which in Powerpoint duplicates a slide).

As for "merlin_2", sorry, I couldn't actually understand what he was saying.  I did have a look in the events viewer though, and there was nothing in there which would point to a single shortcut not working. Quote

Solve : Internet Sharing Connection?

Answer»
I want to connect two computers together to share the same internet connection. Can I use the Internet Sharing Connection Wizard installed on the computer or will this give me trouble? And will I need a patch cable? or if not what type of cable do I need? And can you do internet sharing with a 95 and a 98 computer both with using a dial up modem? Would appreciate anyone's help. Thanks  cat5 cable router...unless the pc are near...nic cards more can be learned here>http://www.wown.com/articles_tutorials/netgeneral/I have another question as well and didn't want to start another thread. I am trying to install all the necessary protection downloads to windows 95 computer. Tried to install spybot search and destroy and it said: file WS2_32.DLL was not found. I went to microsoft.com and found a download for this file but it was for windows 2000 and ME and NT 4.0, I don't think this will work on windows 95. Anyone know where this link would be? I also want to install Ad aware and some sort of Anti-virus, if there are any suggestion please reply.
Thanks

One way would be to copy the file from your Windows 98 computer, but it might not be 95 compatable... it is getting on in years. Have you considered upgrading the 95 computer to 98? Or possible both to a later OS?The file, WS2_32.DLL is part of winsock 2. Go here and see if this helps.http://www.finaldownload.com/products/win95.html   or put win98 on both pc you are allowed to do this....as long as they are in the same DOMAIN...Thanks for your help. I'm in the process of downloading the windows socket 2 update. As for putting windows 98 on this computer, We do want to update but don't have the 98 installation cd, are you telling me you can copy the 98 file from the other computer and put on this one . If so, can I get step by step instructions. You all are so smart. Thanks

As for the networking answer' I'm still trying to figure out. Thanks

If I'm not MAKING since it's because I don't know much about computers but I'm slowly, slowly learning.Simply copying the file from a 98 machine will not work as there are other FACTORS involved.Where is your Windows CD? Never lose it, lend it, hurt it, shout at it, let it out of your sight.

Transfering the file is a little bit more complicated.

Warning: the file may not be compatable with Windows 95 (that might explain why it isn't there) so do this at your own risk

Go so start > find > files or folders and search for

WS2_32.DLL

When you find it, stop the search (no point going on) right click it, copy and insert a floppy disk. Paste it onto a floppy disk.

If you have difficulty seeing the file (even if you saw it in find) then go to view > folder options > view (again) and show all files. All your system files will now be displayed.

Warning: system files are hidden for a REASON. Don't play with them. Afterwards, you might want to hide them again to prevnt accidents.

Put the floppy on the other computer and copy the file. If it's not there, read above. Now go to your harddrive, windows, system folder and paste it there.

Note: there are two system folders, "system" and "system32". On my computer, the file is in the normal system folder (not system32) so try there first.

If the file already exists, then do not replace. Tell me and I will give you instructions on how to back it up, unless you know yourself. (You just basically move the old one out first and put the new one in, but it's vital you backup in an organised fasion.)

Then it would probably be a good idea to restart your computer. See if it works then.

If it fails to work Windows properly for some reason, simply boot into Safe Mode, delete WS2_32.DLL (NOTHING ELSE and, if nessisary, restore the old backup file (ie by moving the old one back in). Since they both have the same file name, it's important you keep your backups organised and seperate!

I hope this helps.Oh, that sounds scary, it may take me a couple of days to get my nerves up to do this. Or maybe I will just tell my husband to buy windows 98SE, I think it may be easier. If I decide to do it I will look for your help I know I will need it. I don't have the 98 cd, because a friend of ours gave us our computer and didn't give us the cd and now, let's just say he can't be reached. Thank you very much. Quote
Or maybe I will just tell my husband to buy windows 98SE.

I think that would be best all-round. Then you'd have two computers linked with the same operating system and a disk to fall back on when things go wrong. You could try buying another operating system, like Windows 2000, XP (don't use ME) or you could stick with what you know (probably best... if you've got no reason to upgrade, why risk it?) I went to finaldownloads and downloaded spyware free scan and after I installed it I tried to run and it says: The procedure entry point varnot could not be located in the dynamic link library oleaut 32.dll.  What in the world does this mean. I'm beginning to think that this computer does not have any of the 95 updates from the last few years microsoft put up. Is there a way I can just download all the windows 95 updates and it will spit out the ones I already have or replace them with another. If so could I get a link or a name to look for a link on microsoft.com. Once again thank you.I went to microsoft.com and downloaded dcom95 and I'm still having the same problem. Is there something else I need to download with this? I'm just trying to get spybot installed so my husband can use until we get windows98. Please reply if anyone has any suggestions.
Thanksyou can save TIME and trouble excuse the pun if you used the win98 as the server..and the win95 as the host...therefore you will not need the winsock file but you can still have the anti-virus etc as a safe guard....the win98 server will do it all...via a router..which many now contain a hardwall and two networks cardsand cat 5 cables..just some ideas...
Thank you Merlin_2, I finally got spybot search and destroy to work. I am in the process of trying to do internet connection sharing and I'm almost there. Kind of confusing. I already set up sharing on windows 98 and now I trying to set up the the other one. But I may have to do the 98 computer over because setup did not create a configuration disk for the other computer.

Solve : An update on my computer status...?

Answer»

Alright my friend has a Dell and Im sorry but Im not a Dell guy.  Anyways he had a DISC called Operating System: Reninstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.  Alright I installed it and it worked fine and now I have Windows Home edition on my computer but its a Dell now.  Ok now I want to get it back to a Sony because there are features that my Sony came with taht I want back on my computer.  So how do I go about doing this?  I also put in my Startup Recovery Disc and it said restart your computer and this disc will start automatically so I did and it did start automatically and it said chose your os and then it said for more options press F8 and theres options like Safe Mode, ect.  I also tried to uninstall this os that I installed but it says I have to register first.  Is there Any way of getting around this?  I dont really want to register befcause I dont want to cause any problems.  I also didnt have to enter a cd key when I installed this disc.  Any SUGGESTIONS on getting my computer back to a Sony Vaio would be helpful.  Thanks.load the sony disks......is should reformat the drive..I tried and they dont start.  I can look through them but they wont start.if you can look thought them you should see an icon called SETUP click that..
I tried that and it just sits and does nothing... Also  any way of getting around having to register and just taking xp off?Copy the C:\windows\system32\wpa.dbl file to a CDRW or floppy. Then put the Sony OS CD in the CD drive, reboot and get into BIOS SETTINGS, and make sure your CD drive is set ahead of the hard drive as a boot device. Save the settings and restart. The system should boot to the CD and let you restore the Sony-branded OS to it. Put your CD Key from the sticker on the machine or CD box in if needed.

When you finish re-installing the OS, copy the WPA.DBL file from the floppy back to c:\windows\system32, and you should avoid having to mess with activation.

Solve : device driver not found?

Answer»

My COMPUTER is not loading windows in normal mode.  It has a message that states device driver not found. MSCD001  It will load in safe mode.  How can I get it working properly. There has been a failure to load the CDROM device driver. This may be either from a hardware fault in the CD drive or an incorrect CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT line.

In Win9x, the default CDROM driver is oakcdrom.sys (usually found in the c:\windows\command\ebd directory) but there are OTHERS as well. Make sure the one for your drive is loading RIGHT. Set the startup to Verify Each Step from the F8 startup menu and watch the response to each line. The line in config.sys and the line in autoexec.bat should have the same /d:mscd001 parameter, if both are present.

In WinXP, you would need to go through Admin Tools steps or something...

In the hardware, unplug and reconnect both ends of the flat cable between the mainboard and the CDROM drive and make sure the power connector is in right (and that it is not a 12-volt-line-only 'fan power connector). Check the BIOS settings and make sure the CDROM is recognised properly. What if the config.sys and the autoexec.bat lines are not the same.  What would I do to CORRECT this problem.  And what if they are not both present.Line in CONFIG.SYS should be something like:

devicehigh=c:\cdrom\oakcdrom.sys /d:mscd001

Line in AUTOEXEC.BAT should be something like:

lh c:\cdrom\mscdex.exe /d:mscd001 /m:12

I usually copy the CD DRIVERS to their own directory for convenience, but you can use the existing locations. The parameter /d: must match between the lines.

Solve : Folder keeps showing up in Program File.PLS HELP!?

Answer»

Help!!  I keep having this one folder called "Websiteviewer" show up in my Program File. It contains .dlr and .exe files that are numbers with a female "sex" icon.  I keep deleting this folder whenever I find it, but there still must be something in my computer that I need to delete to keep it from opening everytime I get online. I can't figure out what that is, and I'm afraid to just start deleting things without being sure of what they are.
Is there a way to keep this one folder from coming back?
My antivirus software does not recognize it as a virus
and most often this stuff appears after a pop-up called "only the best" comes on my screen WHICH my pop up blocker doesn't even recognize!
The pop-up mostly advertises spyware stuff, but occasionally sex stuff
Is there a way to block this folder from generating itself?
Is there a way to tell if another folder is somehow linked to it that I need to get rid of also?

Grateful for any help!
JudeRead This First - Viruses & SpywareThank you so much for the link to Ad-Ware. I was trying to find that one but it wasn't listed under Ad-Ware as one would think. I downloaded a couple software programs and my computer was LOADED with bad stuff!
I think this might cure the problem, time will tell!
It is so great that this forum exists. For people that don't have the financial means to get computer help, this is a Godsend!
Thanks again,
JudeYou should run the scanners you may have installed on a regular basis.

Have you installed a Firewall as well?

How Stuff Works - How Firewalls WorkNo Firewall.  I have the Norton Personal Firewall disc, but in the past it kept me from being able to surf the web. At least thats what my IP told me. In fact he had me un-install my anti-virus and firewall protection all together, that is probably why all this happened.
I have downloaded Ad-Aware and Spyware Blaster. I did already have (and pay for Spykiller 2005, which I WONDER now how good it really is). So I should be well protected now! Do you think I should try to install the Firewall Protection again?
I have been online now since downloading these softwares and have had NO problems like in the past. I even saw the folder and files in question amongst the ones found for quarentine. I was so happy, I think it really WORKED!!
Oh thank you sooo much, I am so very grateful for you!

Muuahh!
Jude
You might need to tell your firewall what programs (such as Internet Explorer) you want to access the Internet. Look in its settings for things such as "Programs". When you try to access the Internet, do you get some kind of dialog pop-up from your firewall informing you that a program is trying to access the Internet?Your ISP told you to DISABLE your Firewall?

What ISP are you subscribing to?

Unless you are using a Router (With firmware Firewall) to connect to the Internet, a software firewall is a must.

The
Sygate Personal Firewal (Click) is a very decent (free) firewall. Like Neil said, you need to configure your Firewall. Most Firewalls allow you to give the program the rights to access the Internet or not when you run the program the first time after the Firewall has been installed.

You should also look into
Mozilla Firefox (Click) which offers very good security once configured properly. Wow...see I had NO idea that you had to "program" your firewall, gosh you would think SBC techs would know this kind of thing.  The happy news is that I have been online now for HOURS and I am no longer having any troubles at all, so the next question is...is should I still use my firewall?  Also, I have this one file that my computer will NOT allow me to delete. It's telling ME that access is denied! How rude!  How can I override this??  It is a folder that I renamed hoping to keep it from working (it was the trouble-maker) but now I can't get rid of the darn thing.
Gosh I sure appreciate all ya'll helpin me like this.
Ok, well...I have to leave for a while, but will check in later tonight.
Bless all of you computer genius'
Jude
**I don't remember exactly what does or doesn't pop-up, sorry.  I will check back in later, and see what you had to say about my installing a firewall again.
Thanks Raptor!!!!No, you don't have to program the firewall yourself, just tell it what programs you want to allow to access the Internet. You definatly should get a firewall. If you can't get rid of the folder, try deleting it in safe mode. Keep it in your recycle BIN for a while first, in case you need it.Neil...not to sound stupid, but is the installation and set-up of the firewall software self explanitory?
I'm not stupid, but obviously I didn't know this, but is it something I can do by myself ya think?
I am afraid I don't know about "safe mode" but I do have a friend who might. I can check with her.
Thanks for you ever so speedy response!
I gotta go to work for a while.....
Have a great evening!!

Is this the WebsiteView folder? If not, tell us the original name of the folder.

It has an installer like other Windows programs - The program it's self will be new to you if you have never had a Firewall before.

Zone Alarm Free (Click) comes with a tutorial when it runs for the first time. That may be a better choice for you.disable system restore and scan for bugs...this folder your are trying to get rid of...have you downloaded any programs..some come with a payload including in it...??like kazza>http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=TROJ_PORNDIAL.BPYOU GUYS ROCK!!!  I disabled my system restore and was able to delete that bad file bada bing bada boom!!
I am so happy!
Again....mucho appreciation!  I can't even begin to tell you all how much time and aggrivation you saved me.
I was just getting ready to format my hard drive and start over, which would have meant MANY HOURS on the PHONE, as I'm sure everyone knows.
How can I ever thank any of you..........

You can download Spybot S&D which is a free alternative to Ad-aware SE.

But, yes, Ad-aware is worth registering.

Adware scanners remove spyware.

Definition of Spyware

Your Firewall blocks programs that try to access the Internet. (Any program will need access rights first, which you give it when you first launch the program after the Firewall has been installed). Donot blindly give access to each and every program, see if you trust the program first. Otherwise the firewall will be of very little use.

it also protects you from intruders that you will not detect when you donot have a firewall installed.

Solve : I want to add another drive.?

Answer»

Hello, thanks for looking at my thread. This might take a bit of explaining so I'll try.

I want add another drive to  my computer.  My desktop tower has a 500 Gig SATA drive with Win Xp SP3, Pentium 4, 3.00 GHz and has 2 gig of RAM.
The drive is getting full with movies that Ive recorded on my external drive and transferred to the computer.

I  have a couple of drives hanging around and tried to add them 1 by 1. So they mostly work individually... 1 Sata and some IDE.
To test the new 200 gig Sata drive, I disconnected the 500 and turned the computer on.
Long story short .. It worked.
The home screen changed to the new drive and all the programs, I had a look around the programs, ran a few and it worked ok and I even added a guest to the users account.

When I added the 200 Gig Sata to the computer with my original drive now reinstalled, the computer didn't see the 500 Gig Sata drive and just loaded the 200?  So I figured wrong connection on the Mobo.

After changing the connections on the M/B to the other and rebooting, I had only my original 500 drive. What the?

My biggest problem now is that, now the computer is back to original, with only the 500 Gig SATA drive installed, I have all these added programs, added to my "Program Files" directory. Some of them work and some don't.

Programs like ITunes, Apple Software Update, Bonjour, Bullfrog, JoshMadison, UTorrent and Yahoo to name a few, all programs that I didnt install or don't use.

Is this typical of adding or changing drives? Personally I haven't had anything like this before and what do I do to undo the changes please?User Profile is corrupt. Create a new user acct and set to admin if you want admin RIGHTS, logon as that new user/admin and this issue should be resolved. Once you have that profile running clean and have moved all favorites etc, my documents etc over to the new profile you can leave the old profile there or delete it.

Any drives added I would format them first so that you dont have say 2 drives installed both containing windows etc. This way only the drive that you want to boot will boot and the other will act as a slave for storage. I made a bootable CD with delpart on it to dump drives years ago, but you can also delete partitions or format drives using a Live Linux CD, DVD, or if your system supports USB boot a bootable thumb drive.

Depending on what you have for a power supply I have seen issues where people go overboard and install too many hard drives and kill their power supplies such as a guy who had 4 of them for 4TB of storage. He too had his movie collection and music on the drives. Installed a much larger PSU and issue was resolved with system acting strange locking up and drives reporting not ready etc. 2 drives in a system probably wont be an issue, but if you plan on stuffing a bunch of drives in, be sure you have a powerful enough power supply to keep them all functioning. I wouldnt bother with the IDE drives as for they are slower and unless you are desperate for every extra GB of storage and on a very tight budget, if you need more space, I'd go with a modern single drive that is say 1TB that can work equal to the maximum storage capacity of about 4 IDE drives and faster with lesser power required, heat created, and having data scattered among multiple drives.

Long time ago I spanned a bunch of IDE drives together to get 600GB of storage, then one of the drives failed and I lost all my data. Lesson learned was that if I need more space, spend he money to buy and install a larger drive.I doubt it's a User Profile issue...otherwise it wouldn't have worked the 1st time.

Since we now know that Both HDD's have an OS on them Guru needs to answer some questions before advice is given.
What OS is on the 500 ?
What OS is on the 200 ?

Is your goal to be able to use both drives as they are including the OS and apps on each respective HDD ? ?

Or are you simply looking for more storage space as is what i assumed from the original post.
When 2 HDD's that are both bootable are introduced piecemeal it is easy for the BIOS to get confused as to which one to boot...this is what's happened here.

Let us know what your goals are for this setup and we can proceed... Quote

I doubt it's a User Profile issue...otherwise it wouldn't have worked the 1st time.

Reason for suggesting profile related was because I had a client attach a 2nd hard drive once and his windows desktop populated with shortcuts to programs on that 2nd hard drive on its own. ( Makes no sense, but seen it happen. Then when the 2nd hard drive was removed all links on desktop etc in relation to programs on that 2nd drive with the 2nd drive gone were non functional. This problem was fixed by creating a new profile and dumping the old profile. )

His statement quoted from his original post sounds exactly like the issue I dealt with on a clients system where somehow software from Program Files and Desktop shortcuts etc were inherrited/merged from the 2nd drive with 2 drives installed with same version of Windows and may have even been set up with same user name and password to allow a strange inherritance/merger like this. What was even stranger was that when navigating in the Programs via Start - > Programs programs were inherrited/merged from the 2nd drive which is gone, and when navigating to C:\Program Files\   only the programs that were to the original hard drive where there, so the profile had become corrupt with a merger or inherritance between both drives connected and when teh 2nd drive was removed it remained. *This client claimed they never installed the programs that were inherrited from the 2nd drive, but the programs were on the 2nd drive from a prior install of Windows XP, so they claimed they didnt install them, yet at some point in the past when this 2nd hard drive was the primary drive they did.

With creating a new user profile and setting up as admin, a very simple test to see if this fixes that issue of this request for help, that is why I suggested it. Personally I dont know how this inherritanfce or merger between the 2 drives took place. Makes no sense, but it happened! And the 10 minute fix was creating a new profile and deleting the old after My Documents and Favorites were copied over etc.

So my question is if they are looking at Start-> Programs with added programs thinking its also additional programs in Program Files -or- if they have navigated to C:\Program Files\ and see extra items there that were never there from the beginning?

* If none of the wrong software is in C:\Program Files\   BUT they see it in Start-> Programs (and they assume thats a good indication of what is in C:\Program Files\) as extra items listed then its the same exact issue my one client had. If there are extra items in C:\Program Files\ that were not installed, then they have pointed out a different problem which is just as strange as my clients system with the profile programs merger.in my own opinion for this problem...
first is,, are you adding one 200 Gig HDD because there is an insufficient space for the original Drive which is 500 Gig?

and if so, aware of one operating system or more than one is installed in one hard disk, so, having two hard disk for pc is having two operating system??

What is your purpose of having two hard drive??

For the computer it might be the confusing task whenever boot comes first from the hard disk and finding two hard drives, which one should the computer boots.... We're still waiting for him to clarify what it is he wants to do...
Until then everything is speculation. Thanks patio for the post. I read both posts & the short answer is Yes.. Your right patio.... but then also so too is DaveLembke.

I just wanted some more storage so I could send all the video files to the 200, but I didn't know what the 200 had on it. As it turned out it had an operating system on it & as Dave said, it got confused and read from them both. When the 200 was the main O/S, my screen asked to update drivers, found new hardware and so on, and honestly I wasnt paying much attention to everything that was going on. So I figure that operator inattention was the main cause here.

The 200 seems to have XP on it as well. (It had the same appearance of XP start up. I took it out now & left it out).
I only wanted this drive for storage to empty the 500, but I didn't have any knowledge of it, so I installed it to have a look.

It turns out that when my 500 was originally installed, somehow the connection was on sata1 on the motherboard and the 200, I connected to "the other" connection on the motherboard. Turns out that was SATA 0.
I'm pretty sure this is how it all became so confusing.

My (newly added) programs when clicked, want to go through an installation process & if I let them they would COMPLETE. (not that there would be any harm in any of that) well not that I can tell, there are some good programs there. Some are really old though & been upgraded to newer versions like "Nero 6", "Acrobat.com","Adobe Digital Editions", "Google Chrome & Earth", I dont know what "Adobe Reader X" is but it DOESNT seem as though they are any problem.

Anyway, I have decided that there is actually no real problem with the merger, just a lot of confusion. So I went out and purchased a 2 TB desktop drive to sweep all the files out that I want to clear off the drive & I may as well clean out the three laptops at the same time. At $97.00 AU, I might just get another one and use it as a dedicated drive on my DVR.

DaveLembke, thank you too for you suggestion on the user profile. I will actually try that after I thin the drive of all the videos and movies, just to try it out. ( might take a while though before I put the 200 back in.) I'll give it a shot and let you know what happens.

Thank you ImnoGuru.Jp_Hernandez thank you too for your input.
It wasnt intentional to have 2 drives with O/S. I had no knowledge of the 200. I just wanted to dump the videos off the 500 to clear up some space. So I installed it and went to "MY Computer" to view it.

The other problem that presented, was that the 500 when originally installed was on the SATA 1 connection on the MoBo.. I suppose since it was a stand alone drive it doesnt really matter where it was connected.

I couldn't find out from anywhere as to whether SATA drives ,like IDE have/had some way of setting the drive as a slave with pins.
I have since learned that SATA 0 is what you would call the primary drive position & SATA 1 could be identified as the slave. ( I hope I got that right)

The more I am here, the more I learn.  There are no Master/Slave jumpers on most SATA HDD's...
It depends more on the MBoard layout itself...
Normally SATA 0 and SATA 1 are master/boot devices.

For example on my ASUS MBoard if i hook up a HDD to anything higher than SATA 2 even if it has an OS installed on it the BIOS will not attempt to boot to it effectively making it a slave HDD... Quote from: patio on January 09, 2013, 07:28:13 AM

Thats right patio, that is exactly what I found out. Now my 500 is on SATA 0 & I'm going to use the external drive to free up the space I want.

Thanks everyone for the help. ImnoGuru.

1. System restore

2. Formated the computer and installed a fresh XP

3. I didn`t install adobe flash player. (It seems like I had activex flash thou)

4. Cleaned the registry with "Vit Registry Fix 11"

5. Deleted temporary internet files in Firefox 18

I formated the computer 2 times and even after a fresh install the computer went slow after watching youtube for some minutes. Before formatting I thought the problems was because of Flash Player so I didn`t install it in the fresh XP install.

I suspect it has something with my video card (Intel GM45 Graphics). It didn`t show up in either dxdiag or CPU-Z before I installed the driver. Under Graphics Driver, Intel® Driver Update UTILITY says "Your driver is current". Under Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility (Chipset INF) it says "This version is VALID. Solve : A couple of quick questions.?

Answer»

Ok my dad bought a windows xp upgrade disk for his laptop and he used the cd key that came with it and installed windows xp home edition on his laptop.  ok my computer came with windows xp and no discs.  I completely wiped my hard drive so now i have no OS.  My friend has a discs that consisits of Windows 2000ME (for dell it says)  that he used about four years ago and on the computer he installed it on he now has windows xp.  Ok now I got  a couple of questions:

1) Can I install this Windows 2000ME thats for dell on my Sony Vaio? Then use my dads upgrade xp disc and use my cd key and install xp that WAY?

2) If I can get a Retail Version of Windows XP from a firend can I use my cd key and install it?

3) If I can install this Windows 2000ME and he used it four years ago but installed Windows XP over it will his cd key be free?  Will/Can I get in TROUBLE?First of all there is no such OS as Windows 2000me.  It is either Windows ME ore Windows 2000 (professional, server, advanced server or database server).

I have never heard of a windows xp upgrade edition, only xp home edition or xp professional.

It is the licence that counts; therefore if you hold a valid licence for xp and borrow a disk from someone else, that is perfectly legal; so the answer to question 2 as far as I'm aware is yes.  I would be CONCERNED as to why your computer came with xp installed and no discs.

Sony waio usually comes with restore discs and that will restore their systems back to the factory settings or on a partition with their packaged software.  Upgrade is not usually an option so the answer to question one is no.

I believe after upgrading to xp, you will have to type in a cd key for a valid xp licenceSorry your right ME. I put 2000 cause I was thinking Melinium(spl) but ya my computer didnt come with any discs to REINSTALL windows and its out of warranty.. So I guess Ill have to see if i can get some from Sony. but will ME for dell work on my Sony? and for the upgrade its Mircrosoft Windows Xp Home Edition Upgrade.  Instead of retail...You seem to be totally confused as to what you actually have. The disk you have is what is known as a Restore Disk, which is just a copy of all the software that is pre-installed when you buy a new computer - it's slightly cheaper than providing about 30 CD's for all the software.

You could probably install Windows from that CD, but in my experience most of them have copy protection measures to stop people from installing the software on more than one PC.

So in answer to your questions:
1) Maybe
2) No
3) No, and you can get into trouble if you do. Next time you go to Windows Ugrade, you'll just find that you're copy will be disabled.

And in answer to your second post, you will have to "go retail". Doing it the way you want to do it is effectively theft, and thereby a felony or whatever you Yanks call major crimes...

This has happened to me a few times now ... hene I opted to get a UPS.  Anywho ... the only 2 things I EVER do (easiest, as far as I am concerned) is as follows:

A - Back in the day I would simply slave that DRIVE to another machine and the format it from within the Operating System (OS)
B - These days I just connect it via USB to another machine and then format it from within Windows

Hope you come right.

EssieAlso, the OP can boot the PC with a CD that has a "Live Linux" on it. He can USE GParted to examine the hard drive.

Solve : Issue #1: Harddrive failed please backup all files.?

Answer»

This is a windows xp HP computer, the problem is I have a boot option and I've been booting from cd all this time. I accidently turned the pc off now the computer won't read the cd for some REASON. Yes the cd works, I tried it in my new laptop I got this Christmas. All I want to get a few files off the old computer and I'll let it rest in peace. I've been using Hiren's BOOTCD 11 to boot my pc, and so I just made a bootable usb but there is a big issue. It reads Grub4dos instead of the Hiren disk, it says Quote

Boot from find menu.lst, /boot/grub/menu.lst. /grub/menu.lst
and when it does that this SHOWS up Quote
Grubs4dos 0.4.5b 2011-04-23, Mem 639K/1014/0M, End: 351657 [Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first WORD TAB list possible command completions of a device/filename ESC at anytime exits. ]
I type in boot then it says Quote
Error 8: Kernel must be loaded before booting
You didn't build the flash drive properly...
Here Ya go...

As far as retrieveing the data there's an easier way:

Solve : When i try to install things like fonts or styles for photoshop it won't let me.?

Answer»

Ok so when i try to install things like fonts and styles or bascily anything for photoshop i get this error. I posted two pictures. Im not sure what to do to fix it. Please help me! p.s. i actually have windows seven and not xp. Sorry.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]For some odd reason Photoshop is not recognising them...
Where are these DLoads from...and is your Photoshop a Legit version ? ?photoshop is legit. and the fonts that any of my programs would use don't EVEN work. So thats completly unrelated to photoshop. That wasn't exactly CLEAR in your 1st Post...are you saying you are having font issues ACROSS the board...no matter what app ? ?

Because that would make it an entirely DIFFERENT issue...
And you didn't answer the DLoad query...because from the screenshot it's a DLoad...where is it from ? ?i tried to EXPLAIN my self as clearly as possible. Yes it's font issues and pretty much anything related. The picture came when i attempted to download something. So yes i would assume it's a download issue.

Solve : Installing XP on Acer Aspire One ZG5?

Answer»

so i was trying to reinstall windows xp on an ACER aspire one (model: zg5) netbook, as XP was running horribly, and nothing worked.

anyhow, i made a bootable USB drive copy of XP from an XP CD using 'WinToFlash'.
the 1st step in which XP bootable formats the drive and installs windows file works fine. it is, however, the 2nd step that i cannot get into- the final, GUI installation of windows. when trying to boot into the 2nd option from the usb stick, "GUI mode setup, continue setup + 1st start of windows", it says that "Windows COULD not start because \system32\hal.dll is MISSING or corrupt."

I've tried to re-copy and overwrite hal.dll from downloading it online as well as copying it off the original XP CD, no luck.

i've tried the fixmbr and fixboot commands in the windows XP recovery console, nothing.

there's an option for "DEBUG, incase of HAL.DLL or NTOSKRNL.EXE not found errors" on this bootable version of XP on the usb drive, and it yields an "I/O errore multi(0)disk(0)partition(1)\BOOTSECT.DOS" error. i've done hard drive tests as well, and it passed the quick test, and the extended test took awhile so i ABORTED it. what else can i do? thanks in advance. What OS did this unit ship with originally ? ?XP home, i'm installing XP Pro.

So you see why I'm asking these questions ....

i tried to reboot from disc but I could noy get into setup screen  or boot menu I though it was because of the error message i did what you said lastnight and it got rid of the exception and read missing ntldr, after all that i decided to try a clean install like i said earlier i could not get into setup  so i use the six XP boot disc when it got to the eula it wouldn't go any further after i would press F8 it would go to recovery console but not to install so now i took my hard drive out and installed xp on it using my WIFES computer it loaded fine on hers and worked fine when i put it on mine i get

Solve : HELP!! --Files disappear from network drive....SOLVED?

Answer»

Hello Everyone,
Hopefully someone can shine some light on my problem. I have PC with XP SP3, two internal hard drives and one network drive (backups). Yesterday I decided to move a tone of software from my internal hard drives onto the network drive for storage. I created a folder in the network drive, and subfolders with no problem.

(most files are zip/exe) I had about 4-5 subfolders under the main folder and all of the sudden the contents of the this particular folder has disappeared, vanished, gone!! It's acting like a BLACK HOLE!! My problem is that I 'MOVED' all of my files onto the network hard drive and I have no other means to gain access to these files.
Under the folder's properties, it states that it is empty and has no files/folders. I've moved files before just in exactly the same manner and never had a problem.

What really bugs me (and gives me hope of recovery) is that when I try to move/copy files over and if I already moved/copied that same file into the folder, it will ask me if I want to REPLACE THE FILE? But if u LOOK at the folder, its EMPTY! When u first move the file it shows up in the folder, but as soon as you do a REFRESH of the folder the items disappear!!
If I try again to copy the exact last file I dumped into this same folder, it will ask me the file already exist! You just can not see anything!!! I have no clue as to what may be going on, i've tried changing the folders setting to show hidden files, system file, the views, etc....no luck!

Does anybody have any idea what may be happening to my files??? If I try to delete the folder the system tells me the directory is not empty!! Like hello??? If I make a copy of the folder and move it, nothing shows. I am out of ideas and need some HELP PLEASE. I've already tried looking through 'cmd' and nothing shows up.
Files are simply disappearing and I have no ideas why!!

thanks in advance and open to any suggestionshttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421&sd=techHey, thanks for the reply. However, that did not help me

Anyone has other suggestions??

Thanks

It could be simple such as the drive you are uploading to may be failing? Ever consider this thought? I would look into it.

Also maybe certain permissions are set or the files or folder being uploaded have been MARKED as hidden.

Just some thoughts. voxp, this "network drive" that you speak of, is it a NAS type drive? Or is it inside a server?
LOOKS like the file(s) or folder(s) is hidden.
setting:
local computer -> view hidden file: yes
network comp/drive -> view hidden file:no

you wont see the file even though you enable view hidden in folder options:

try this script:
Code: [Select]pushd \\computername\sharename
explorer .
Reno,
do I RUN the script in cmd window?

Also, just to clarify. My network drive is connected via USB to my airport base station and thus I can access wirelessly. I have other files and folders on the drive that I can see and manipulate no problem. My problem is only with this particular folder and no matter what I dump into the folder, they disappear after I refresh the folder. But, when I try to add the file again into the folder, it tells me the file already exist and if I want to replace it? YOU CAN NOT SEE ANYTHING IN THE FOLDER. i face this problem once, but in my case is the other end is a PC with setting "view hidden file:no", and the file uploaded is hidden or system file.
the NT dos cmd is just a shortcut to map network drive to z:\

in your case, any file dumped into that particular folder is missing. have you try to plug the usb drive directly to your PC?Well here is what I got....the problem is sort of fixed. I plugged the usb drive directly into the PC (by-passing the router) and I could see the files in the folder (woooo)!! I made an immediate copy of the folder to another location on my PC. I re-connected the drive back to the router and I have the same problem. Folder is there, but no files! I am not sure what the problem is and I can not change any security settings on that particular folder. I am puzzled....but at least I got my files back.

I just created a NEW folder in the root directory and added files/folders with no issues. For some reason, this particular bunch of files decided to play hide-and-seek with me! I am still interested in finding the solution, but for now am happy with what I got.

Thanks everyone!
ii'm having the same problem with my external storage connected to an airport extreme. i ran through all the suggestions i could find online. tweaked the registry, even got me a registry cleaner per suggestion from one of the posts somewhere, nothing worked. when you saw that your files are back when you hooked your external drive straight to your computer, your problem is not solved. you're just happy that you did not lose your files. what i'm looking at now is the integrity of my airport extreme, i don't know, but there must be a solution to the problem. Solve : XP3 automatically disconnected my PC from the Internet?

Answer»

Hi all,

I was using Windows XP SP3 at home for doing school homework.
My PC was connected to the Internet when I was typing words on MS Words,
and I did not launch any other applications except the Firefox 13.0.01.
I found that my PC would disconnect my PC from the Internet when I did not use
the browser to browse any webs for 5 minutes. If I left the browser idle WITHOUT doing any searching or browsing, then I would not be able to connect to the Internet after 5 minutes.
That's weird, because I had not ENCOUNTERED this kind of problem when I was using XP SP2  a few months back.

Could someone help me please?

THANK you
Kitty. While researching on your behalf i found this comprehensive responce with a number of applicable possible solutions. Please give them a try and report back. While this is a member of another forum i believe that person is also a long standing member of the CH forums as well.

Solve : Please help... computer keeps reverting to blue screen of death?

Answer»

I was installing McAfee and uninstalling Norton Antivirus when this happened.  Now whenever I start up my desktop, it briefly goes to my normal windows desktop screen before reverting to the blue screen.  I've tried to install McAfee during safe mode, but it doesn't install or fix the blue screen problem.

Anyone have any suggestions?

[recovering DISK space, attachment deleted by admin]First of all, McAfee makes the absolutely worst software in the world. I strongly urge you not to use it. BTW, what was wrong with Norton AV?

As for the bsod, you may have to do this from safe mode if you can't get to your desktop:
Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded FILE and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next replySo I did what you said... downloaded the zip file, extracted all the files and clicked on the ICON.  The window popped up, but nothing was there for me to "select all" and copy.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Okay. Have you completely uninstalled Norton? Please TELL us exactly how far you got in that process (UNINSTALL / installation of McAfee) before the problem arose.

Solve : Mapping Network Drives?

Answer»

I have 2 computers networked on a home network. Both are MEMBERS of the same workgroup, and I can ping either one from the other. Both are running XP, and file sharing is enabled in both computers

I can map the drives of Computer A from Computer B, but cannot map Computer B from A. Computer A does not recognize Computer B as PART of the network. When I try to add B to the network I am asked for a password. Neither computer was EVER installed with a password, to the best of my knowledge, so I'm at a loss how to. respond.

Is it possible Computer A does have a password that I'm unaware of? If so, how do I find it. If not, what is causing this problem, and how can it be solved?.When it prompts for a password have you tried just hitting ENTER ? ?If I remember rightly, many things actually don't work if you don't have a password for security reasons. This includes task scheduling in some cases, most remote desktop and logins, etc.

You might try a username of 'anonymous' and no password and see if that works. I've had issues with XP not logging into public shares and this login worked when things were shared to everyone.I've tried using no password, with no success. I don't understand why Computer A won't recognize computer B as part of the network when I've set both up with the same protocols, and workgroup, but Computer B recognizes A.

Solve : Unable To Copy And Paste URL's?

Answer»

I have Windows xp and for months I have been unable to normally copy and paste links to pages,..unless I right click on the Properties and then click Copy. Only then can I paste the link.

I never had any issues until my computer crashed about 4 months back and we had to reload Windows.

I have googled this problem and found no answers.

It is really a huge pain that I am unable to GO to my browser window and copy the url to paste elsewhere. When I try to do this and go to paste,..there is a blank. Nothing pastes.

As I said earlier,..the only way that I can copy and paste urls,.is to go to Properties and copy it there.

For the most part I am able to copy and paste print on pages,..but not urls in browsers. Help!

Thanks!
"Properties" where?  What browser are you using? And what app is being used to create these pages ? ? Word? Wordpad ? Other ?I am using INTERNET Explorer. I will right click on a page and then click onto the Properties in order to be able to copy a url. When I click onto the url in the browser and highlight it, I try to copy it and it appears that I do,...but when I go to another page to Paste it,..it will not paste anything.
As far as "what app is being used"....I am not using an app,..but simply using my computer normally.
I simply have lost the ability to use my normal copy and paste function, and can not figure out WHY.I still don't get it...are ypu pasting it into the address bar and hitting Enter ? ?
That should work...
What happens if you simply click on the link ? ?
You can set IE...or any other browser to open any link in a new window.Ok,...I will try to be clearer in what my problem is. Let's say that I want to send  a link to a YouTube video to a friend of mine in an email. The normal course would be for me to go to the page of the video,..place my mouse on the browser url,..highlight it,..and then right-click Copy.  I then go to my email and in the email I go to Paste,...and NOTHING is pasted. I am not able to Copy and Paste URL's from browsers.
If I go back to the page and right click my mouse and get the Properties, the box will APPEAR and I have to copy the Address url and then go back to my email, before it will Paste. That is the ONLY way that I can Copy and Paste url's. My question is WHY have I lost the ability to Copy and Paste a url from a browser?Try these :
Go to IE Tools - Internet Options - Security tab - Custom Level ( Internet highlight) - Scroll down and look for Drag and drop or copy and paste FILES. Hit Ok, Apply - Ok.What happens if you use this method.
1.Highlight the URL to be copied.
2.together click on "control/C" on the keyboard
3.open whatever it is you want to copy the URL to (new browser window/e-mail content/whatever
4.Place your cursor(mouse) wherever you want to place the copied URL (ensure you see the cursor there).Click the left mouse key to place the cursor there.
5.click together "control/V on the keyboard
6.Your copied URL should appear.

Solve : problem with win xp booting up?

Answer»

Every time I turn on my computer I hve to use the XP cd to boot up. How do I make the HD bootable?

JerryYou need to provide a LOT more information. For example, did it ever work properly? If so, what is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)? Tell us about your system. The more information you provide, the better our chances of helping you.The problem started after I installed a second HD and a new soundcard in my computer. I removed the Hd and disable the integrated soundcard that was in.I checked device manager and the OLD soundcard vwas disabled.Since the, I have to insert the xp cd to boot up. I went to BIOS and select HD as priotity oot. No result. Please noe that in the BIOS  my CD-roms re on channel 0 and my HD on channel 1. I do not know if that is the problem. Please let me know if you need more info. Thanks.

JerryIt sounds as though the new hd is the primary and the old one (with the OS) the secondary. Reverse the cables on the two hd's and see what happens. Also if they are IDE style (wide ribbon CABLE connectors ) you need to check if the jumpers are set properly...
Windows drive = Master
Data drive = Slave.Just to add, what error does it shows when the disc is not in place? What was the intention of putting a second hard drive in the first place? DUAL boot or a data drive? What if you removed all optical drives and disabling floppy drive in BIOS (if there is one)? I did remove the second HD. Went to BIOS and set my single HD(the that has XP on it) to PRIORITY boot. No result. I still have to use the CD to open XP.Boot to the XP Cd...select Recovery console...
This will bring up a Dos looking screen...
Type in Fixboot and hit Enter...
Then type in fixmbr and do the same...
Re-boot and let us know...I did but windows start normally. That happens all the time. No way to get to RECOVERY.
I have to leave the cd in the drive all the time in order to boot windows, or leave the computer on. When you boot up immediately start tapping F8...this will bring up the advanced boot menu and you can select it from there.Ii did,but doing that took me to WINDOWS SET UP screen, and Windows started loading the files until the XP logo appears. Then,I could use the computer.
One more thing I noticed: If I hit F2 during the booting, it takes me to a screen called AUTOMATED RECOBERY FILE, but they ask fo a disc that I do not have.

Solve : screen keeps jumping?

Answer»
Hello,
I have a Dell desktop and monitor, running XP Pro.

My problem is every time I go to Google or Yahoo, Facebook, etc.,
and try to navigate the page, my monitor flickers up and down,
jumping all the time.
I can't read anything until it stops.

Is there a fix for this?

Thank-You,
John
Is this a CRT monitor or a Flat screen?

Monitor is probably on its way out, although you could try swapping the video cable. Usually a picture that jumps AROUND in position is a SYNC and HOLD issue. Modern flat screens have an autosync function that lines up the screen which can make it jump position horzontally and vertically about an inch or so until it finds center and holds the sync. I have seen flat screens that are on their way out have a vert/horiz RANDOM jump where you are using the display and then all of a sudden everything just moved like a half inch of so to the right etc.

If the display is a CRT and the picture shrinks on a page with lots of white background but gets larger on darker backgrounds then its usually a issue with the high voltage struggling to operate. Quote from: DaveLembke on January 31, 2013, 02:44:29 PM

Wow this TAKES me back. Many CRT monitors buzz slightly in normal operation, and when that (above) happens you can often hear the buzz change.

Its a Dell Monitor, FLAT screen..

Solve : After I installed a software on a CD-ROM, the computer won't boot up correctly?

Answer»

OS: Windows XP, service pack 3
Motherboard: Asus K8V SE Deluxe
Hard Drive Type: SATA connection (No IDE drive were used)
DVD Type: Memorex DVD-CD-ROM drive

1) I went into the BIOS and make sure that the PC boot up from the hard drive.
2) Once the PC is up and running, I installed a software on a CD-ROM.
3) After installation, I removed the CD-ROM and reboot. When boot up the computer
won 't boot up from the hard drive, but expecting to boot up from a CD-ROM.
I had to do CONTROL-ALT-DELETE and then it will boot up from the hard drive.

   In short:
It does not matter which software I installed. After the software installation, the first
reboot does not work, so I had to reboot the second time before the PC will boot up
   properly.

Alternatively, after the software installation is done, I could turned off the computer and
then turn it back on and then it will boot up from the hard drive.  What software ?
System MECHANIC 6.0
Fix-it Utilities 7.0
Nero
K8V SE Deluxe Mother board driver
and any other software.

Also, If I were to put in a CD-ROM into the Memorex drive just to LOOK at the content of it
the PC would not boot it up correctly when I reboot. Quote

System Mechanic 6.0
Fix-it Utilities 7.0
While these softwares define themselves as bloatware/crapware cleaners, they are however the mother of trouble makers when it comes to OPTIMIZING your PC performance. The BOOTING problem might have COME after installing these registry cleaners which requires you to scan and reboot.

Solve : Can't get new Directory in Disk Drives?

Answer»

Running win XP, No Revision 2. Athalon Opteron 144. I put a Cd ineither TDK CD DRIVE or Pioneer DVD Dirve and then read & remove it. I replace it with a new disk totally DIFFERENT then the 1st one. When I read it it is still the same DIRECTORY as the 1st. It happens in the Dos window and in windows Run menu also. What is happening & how can I fix it?What percisely do you mean? If you have a window displaying the cds contents, remove the cd and put a new one in, then the window will still display the same contents. Try selecting the window and pressing F5 to refresh its contents.

Solve : my windows XP has two network connection icons shown on Task Panel.?

Answer»

Hi all,

Recenly I upgraded my old PC running windows SP2 to SP3, and then I found that
there were two network connection ICONS shown on Task Panel. (please see the picture below)

When I moved the mouse over the left network connection icon,
it showed me the ISP with network connection speed: 1.0Gbps.
But the other network connection icon showed me the network connection speed: 10Mbps.

I am thinking why there are two network connection icons shown on the Task Panel,
and which of them is the actual network connection speed for my computer.

Please help if you could
Thank you.
KittyIf you want them GONE its a simple checkbox under Network Adapter Properties:

START -> Settings -> Control Panel - > Network Connections -> Right-Click on one of the adapters and select properties -> UNCHECK the "Show icon in notification area when connected".

Repeat for other adapter that you dont want to have displayed.

Never seen a SP3 service pack update from SP2 do this.

If you want to find out which one is which you can disable one of them at a time and watch for your internet connection dropping out. Or you can use IPCONFIG/ALL under command shell and get the properties of these network adapters with IP addresses etc. If this is a laptop, you MIGHT be looking at wired connection and a wireless connection. Wired being the 1Gbps connection and wireless being the 10mbps connection.

The other connection must be the 1394 Adapter as you can disable this by Network connections and right-click the 1394 adapter.
