Solve : recovering photos after computer got formatted.?

Answer»

hi my computer 's OS is Windows XP..4 months back i had kept my tour photos on desktop,my brother mistakenly formatted the computer twice in a span of 2 months now i want to recover those photos cos they r very IMPORTANT,pl HELP me how to overcome this issue. If it's been formatted twice they are long GONE i'm afraid...You could always try a program to recover deleted files, depending on how much of this stuff was on the disk (if there was a lot, you might get a little back). Whether any stuff can be recovered depends on how the disk was formatted. If the SPACE is MARKED as free (quick reformat), data can remain. If the space was overwritten, there is nothing you can do.

Solve : Disc Not Found?

Answer»

I have the Windows XP Professional Version and I am
trying to copy a downloaded WinXP-Pro Service Pack 2 ONTO a DVD
for another computer.
I load the DVD in and ATTEMPT to start the burn and it says "No Disc"
Do I need to format the DVD someway first?
Am I doing this correctly ?
Appreciate any and all advice & assistance ~Does the Service Pack file name end with " .iso" ? ?
If so it needs to be burned using a DIFFERENT tool as a copy is just a copy...
I use and recommend IMGBurn for this task...P. S. ...it's Free.File says EXE ( WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe )
I was told for me to put it on a DVD, I had to burn as ISO since it
was from Microsoft.  I will TRY to find the one you mentioned. ThanksIt wont run as an iso...
Why not just clik on the file itself ? ?
It should unpack and start installing.
The DLoad file that is...not the .iso you burned.I have not burned anything yet -  I downloaded the file to my computer and
need to put it on a DVD so that I can put it on another computer.Burn it as is then...an .iso wont run.Trying to do just that but get "disc not found"
I am trying to put it on a new BLANK DVDWhat app are using to burn ? ?
If you have a flash drive you can just copy it to that instead...
Or try a different blank...it'll fit on a CD.

Solve : buttons to change resolution hidden?

Answer»

How can I get the buttons visible after a FAMILY member changed the resolution without APPLYING it FIRST to see what it would look like? I can get to the apply but not able to accept it to change it. It is a 17" monitor set on 480X640 and it doesn't utilize the screen like it should.Start in safe mode and right click the screen, go to the properties in the dropdown, then the settings tab, and set your actual resolution to 640/480. The SYSTEM should reboot with the controls visible in the screen when you again right click the normal screen, and hit properties and the settings tab.

You may still have to resize a few things or move the TITLE bar around to see the buttons.

While in the Settings screen, Alt-A is Apply, and Alt-D is Advanced. Letter O should get you to the OK button, which is also the default button if you hit the Enter key.what operating system is this...has this happened since the 17inch installed...or has it done it before...

Solve : cli.exe application error?

Answer»

I recently installed Lubuntu on my Dell 9400 laptop running Windows XP (32-bit), and managed to remove a partition needed to boot into Windows.  T make a LONG story short, I had to repartition the entire hard drive, and reinstall Windows XP, then install the Linus OS. I'm pretty much back up and running in both OSs, but when I boot into Windows I get a popup cli.exe-application error: "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc 0000135)".  The computer seems to run OK when I click to terminate the application.  I tried uninstalling the ATI programs, but I believe it's associated with my video driver (ATI Mobility Radeon X1400), and it was a complete disaster!  I had to reinstall the video driver, but now it's back to the same.  I never had this pop up prior to the XP reinstall; any IDEAS?If this error is showing up at boot TIME then it's related to something in your startup group...
Have a look in there and see.
Also did you remember to DLoad and install the Service packs ? ?
If the install CD had SP 1 included you can skip SP 2 and just install SP3. Quote from: waltzcar on April 07, 2013, 09:25:30 PM

I've seen that message before when the .NET framework isn't installed and a program you run depends on it. I did a few google searches and this error seems fairly common with ATI drivers. Some version of .NET framework should be in windows XP's updates by now; have you run those YET since reinstalling?I have run the updates; I suspected the .NET framework, too.  I tried installing .NET framework 4 (seems to be the LATEST version), but still got the message, so I uninstalled it. This post on another forum (and a few others I saw) suggests version 1.1 of the framework; I've actually had to manually install that version before for a few other older applications that didn't include it with their installers. .NET Framework version 1.1 download can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26Thank you! .NET version 1.1 seems to have fixed the problem!

Solve : create boot cd?

Answer»

Hi, I want to make a bootable cd (independent from the operating system) and have on it the recovery console
for diagnostics. I do not have a XP startup cd SINCE I bought the pc with xp already on it.

Thanks for the tips!First, make sure you have your Windows XP Disk Key number recorded somewhere. It should be on a sticker ATTACHED to your PC. If not, use Belarc Advisor to FIND it and make sure you have it available.

Then find a friend with the same version of WinXP you have and get him to burn you a backup disk. Perfectly legal, you have your own Disk Key and legally purchased the copy installed on your system.

This will be a bootable CD if his Nero or Roxxio or NTI CD burner utility is any good.

If you want something different for a bootable CD, download the Knoppix Linux LiveCD...http://www.nu2.nu/bootdisk/cdrom/

Solve : Auto disconnect option in WinXP?

Answer»

I'm running: Win XP SP2 NTFS, on a pc that I built with a AMD anthron 2000+, 512 mb ram, Nvidia Personal Cinema 64MB video card.
I access the internet through ISP phone DIALUP. In the past, when I close internet explorer, I would receive the auto-disconnect option. It no longer appears. My system remains on line with the browser closed. I end up disconnecting MANUALLY and manually removing the internet temp files.  If I reboot the PC and run a full disk scan, the option will work for awhile. Then, after a few disconnects, It no longer appears.  I don't know if this makes a difference, but I'm using Norton Antivirus 2003, which is TRS. I'd appreciate any suggestion you may have. Thank you for time and assistance.
rpirani
:-/EITHER re-boot pc and hit the f8 key and chose last good config...or save your username password..and make a new connection in dial-up networking...     I rather not do a restore to a previous date.  For when it does work, it's only for a short time.  Once again, thank you for your time and assistance.  you have a 56k modem..yes then dont worry about norton...live updates from norton may hold onto the connection if on adsl/cable /sat...have you got the dial-up box back and is it all working as it should..and run a scan for trojans etc....just in case they may have cause this problem...  I using 56k us robotics modem.  I click on the  "e" quick launch, which brings up the dialer and get on line just fine.  I have virus scan scheduled weekly. Plus, I run Ad-Aware(great program) regularly.  This problem has been going on for many months. So, I don't believe it's a virus or spyware.  It worked find when I setup the pc and installed winxp.  But after a few month the option stopped appearing.  It only works for awhile after I do a complete disks scan.  Which with winXP(NTFS) is perform after rebooting.
Some additional info which I hope may help:  I have only isp (Peoplepc) and ofcourse it would be set as my default.  Under the PROPERTIES of this connection I have it set to "disconnect when no longer in use"is set to.
While trying to troubleshoot the problem, I found a Microsoft Article ID : 193555 "No Disconnect Prompt When Quitting Internet Explorer"  It discusses a registry setting change.  But, it only protains to previous versions of windows and Internet explorer.  For I did not find this setting in my winXP registry.
I know this problem is minor. It's gets annoying to have to manually disconnect and remove the internet temp files everytime I go off line.  So, anymore suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks

Solve : Best Computer to buy??

Answer»

I need SUGGESTIONS on the best COMPUTER to BUY. I am LOOKING for something to use for school and fun. Thanks.
If you are competent to assemble a machine, choose MB, CPU, video, audio, network, box, PSU, modem, KB/Moouse, and speakers at discount from the WEB or from a local PC assembler shop. If not, get your tech-head friend to do it with you.

Next choice is to have that local shop build you a custom system.

Third choice is to buy an Alienware, Mac, or server-grade Dell.

Solve : Windows XP and Norton AntiVirus 2005?

Answer»

A few months back I upgraded to Norton AntiVirus 2005 on a computer RUNNING Windows Millenium as its operating system.  This past weekend I upgraded the operating system to Windows XP.  After installing XP, I noticed that Norton was not working and then READ the Norton manual which said to uninstall Norton when upgrading..too late!  I tried to uninstall Norton which did not work, and then uninstalled XP to start over.  Now, when booting I get an error message that SYMEVNT.386 is not loaded and to hit any key to continue, however the system locks up and hitting any key does nothing.  I need help.  Where do I begin?richie_rich66.....If I read you correctly , you have XP installed . Can you shut down and restart and as soon as it starts to boot up tap on the F8 key repeatedly and then choose the START in "Safe Mode "  . Then if it starts in safe mode ......try and uninstall NAV 2005 .
Given that you updated last week , did you use the full win XP app or a upgrade......Did you format and do a CLEAN install......because if you did you probably have all your important things backed up ....so a format and reinstall of xp would resolve your problem......remember if you do this ....to reinstall XP and sp1 then check to see if you can D/l SP2 .....then reinstall your NAV 2005

dl65  the maybe ANOTHER way>http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q303661/  when you have DONE this then uninstall nortorn and re-install winxp...dl65....no I removed XP thinking that I should start over from the beginning.  I attempted to uninstall via safe-mode, however it will not allow me to uninstall Norton while in safe mode.  I was able to remove it manually, re-booted and Windows Me loaded normally.

I am not doing a full install I am upgrading from Me to Windows XP.  I backed up onto a CD ROM all of my important data.  Hopefully I should now be able to start over again.  Anything else I should do before I load XP?  Has norton been uninstalled from the reg....(imho norton resource hogger)can cause more problems than it worth)merlin_2....I don't know.  How do I go about finding out?I would download all the XP drivers for my hardware and save those to CD, then wipe and install XP with full HD format. It may ask you for the ME CD to verify license, but it should not force you to cripple it with a ME install before XP. Use NTFS if possible, unless you have software that demands FAT32 for your HD partition.

Solve : play order on windows media player?

Answer»

Hello

I'd really appreciate your advice about how to make windows media player play my playlist files in the order they appear.

I'm busy MAKING my own cd and have to listen to the files in the right order. They are NAMED with numbers first so that a quick SORTING by file name is possible, eg. (names are fictional but they SHOW my naming system) 001 Horses, 002 birds, 003 cuckoo song  etc.... up to 16 files. So they get sorted 001 - 016. This usually gets them ordered fine on Word but media player seems to function differently, as the songs don't get played in the right order. They go from 01 to 011 to 005 to g-d knows what, I can't figure it out. Nor can I find where it may be set to "random".

Can anyone help PLEASE?

Thanks in advance!!!!  Can no one help please? it seems such a trivial matter to solve yet I'm stuck with it....  Turn off 'shuffle'.

Solve : I need a global desktop.ini file?

Answer»

I need a way to make a desktop.ini file apply to all folders without copying it into every single folder. This actually sounds like a pretty bad idea to me. Not to mention that a lot of common or system folders already have a desktop.ini -- how would you handle that?

What are you trying to ACCOMPLISH by doing this? Most of the THINGS you can set in desktop.ini can usually be set other ways as a default instead of a hack like copying it to every folder.WELL, I found out there was no way to do this PROVIDED by Microsoft, so I CRACKED and patched shell32.dll and it's working well. It was hard to get it working, but now it works without any issues. I made it read a file "C:\WINDOWS\global.ini" instead of the desktop.ini that it would find in the current folder. Now I can change the styles and background images of folders without having desktop.ini everywhere. The only downside is it now ignores the desktop.ini in the folder. I am going to try to make it so that if desktop.ini exists, it loads from that, otherwise it loads the defaults from global.ini.

Solve : Computer freezes...have tried EVERYTHING to resolve...thanks in advance for help?

Answer»

Hi and thanks again for reading....this is my first time posting for help ever haha...very independent typically, but this time I am unable to resolve the issue on my own. My HP laptop is freezing randomly, either set to the page I'm on, or to a different color each time (orange, green, white, blue-no text)...I've cleaned the registry, defragmented, checked disk ERRORS, run anti-virus scans...everything comes up clean. What ELSE could it be? The fans are running fine...I've been at it for over a week trying to trouble shoot...any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much 1) If by "cleaning the registry" you mean that you use a registry cleaner, you should know that registry cleaners CAUSE problems, they don't cure them. The BEST registry cleaners are benign and do nothing. The worst will leave your system unusable.

2) If the screen DISPLAYS different colors the problem might well be the DISPLAY adapter.

Solve : Problem saving pdf files?

Answer»
Hi

I've been having a bit of a weird problem when I try and save a pdf file ( more than any other type ) from the internet to my PC.

 It's a home built desktop with a Gigabyte M68M-S2P board and sempron 140 cpu , 4gb memory , a 300 gb HD ( with 170 gb free ) also a 1tb ext HD.

If I try to save to the ' my documents ' folder I GET - The disc you are saving to or the disc used for temporary files is full , clear some space to continue - and it won't go any further. I can save it to my EXTERNAL harddrive without any problem. I've cleared the tempory internet folder with cookies and history and tried again with no joy.

Anyone got an idea as to what could cause this and a way to solve it please ?

Thanks , Adam What Internet Browser are you using?

Does it work with another Internet Browser? (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome)
I use both internet explorer , firefox and the aol browser and it happens on all of them.

AdamWhat caught my eye is you are attempting to save to My Documents folder...
Either the path is wrong...or your HDD is so filled Win GIVES that ERROR message.  Quote from: patio on April 07, 2013, 02:27:23 PM

Logon with that new user acct and create a document with notepad etc and then delete it and test recycle bin. If the problem is solved, you then just need to copy over your favorites from your old profile, and data from My Documents, and maybe items on desktop of old profile to this new profile ( * be sure only to grab copies of anything that is not already present in the new profile's desktop ) to this new profile, then you can just go on using this new profile. At some point when you know everything is working flawlessly you can delete the old profile.

My guest profile's Recycle Bin works.

you then just need to copy over your favorites from your old profile, and data from My Documents, and maybe items on desktop of old profile to this new profile

I never heard of this and never knew you can copy over an old profile to a new profile. How do I copy every thing I have to the new profile?
Thank you.You can navigate to the old profile from logged in on the new profile and find it in
c:\documents and settings\

In here you will see the user profiles in folder names representing each profile, and should be able to navigate into them deeper and copy data from them to your active profile on the fly.

In here you will find My Documents, Favorites, Desktop, etc and you can select and copy those items from the old profile to the new profile name. *YOU DONT WANT TO COPY EVERYTHING OVER, as for doing so would cause the new profile to inherrit the corruption. All you will want is the important user data that is in My Documents, you might also want your browser favorites that are located here if you are using Internet Explorer, as well as if you had anything important saved to your desktop on the old profile, you may want to copy those items from the old profile to the new.

Solve : Floppy disk- ahh!!?

Answer»

Okay, I was just given a floppy disk by my co-worker to get the resume off of. However, when I put it in the drive and clicked on the A drive to open it, it said that it wasn't formatted! Then, when I went to eject the disk it came out without the metal piece! How do I get it out?!? Thanks.Turn off your system and UNPLUG it.  Get a pair of tweezers and dig deep.Be sure to use a flashlight and be careful..... I've ruined many floppy drives from doing that.

Floppy drives only COST a few bucks anyway just in case you break itshutdown the pc ..properly...unplug it form the mains power source....*caution time touch the case *then unscrew the screws holding the case take the case of...then unscrew the the floppy drive then either slide the drive out and unscrew the top of it and remove the offending item) or  disconnect the power lead and ide  cable from the floppy drive and remove the floppy drive..now its out of the case...unscrew the top of it.. and revmove the metal strip> and just reverse the PROCESS of re-installing the floppy drive..Thanks everyone for your HELP. I got it out!! All I used was a large paperclip folded out to form a hock and hocked it onto the opening of the metal part.... and WALA! It came out.Lucky > ;)sometimes the flap gets in the way on the drive...

Solve : Anomolus defrag results?

Answer»

I am getting unusual results when I defragment my "C" drive. It is a WD 227 GB grive with 205 GB of free space.  It contains only my OS (Windows XP SP3). EVERYTHING else (Docs, pictures, music, ect.) is stored on a second internal 1.5 TB drive. Every couple of months it has been my practice to run "clean up" and defrag. on both drives. For the last 6 - 8 months, after I run defrag., I have gotten results on the "C" drive that appears to show it as very fragmented. I have attached screenshot and drfrag report of these results.
Profile:
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3, 32 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz, x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 1
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 1015 Mb
Graphics Card: Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family, 128 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 232868 MB, Free - 211651 MB; D: Total - 1430796 MB, Free - 1044972 MB; E: Total - 5585 MB, Free - 330 MB;
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC., Goldfish2, 1.xx, X312345678
Antivirus: Microsoft Security Essentials, Updated: Yes, On-Demand Scanner: Enabled
Can you help me understand what's going on here?
Thanks for you time,
Ken

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Something is taking a lot of space on your system drive.
I have Windows XP SP3 on a 56 GB partition and using on half of it fro all my PROGRAMS. Documents Photos Music and Videos are on a SEPARATE partition.
Something wrong with your system.  Unless you have some really mobster programs, it is hard to imagine that much space is used by programs.

You may wish to use some kind of diagnostic to find if the system has file errors, like lost files and stuff.

EDIT: Before you drag, do you check then drive for errors?
After looking over your attachments, it does not make any sense. Most of the drive looks fragmented. That can not be.Geek,
Yes, I have checked the file system for errors using chkdsk. Nothing found.
"... it does not make any sense. Most of the drive looks fragmented. That can not be."  Exactly why I'm posting.    OS and programs are using only ~ 22 GB of the 227 GB partition.
KenFirst, I'd go ahead and format that free space as an NTFS drive, and give it a definitive name like "Storage".
Then if you have any large Music, Movies or ISO files on C' MOVE them to the new Storage partition.
Then do a massive Cleanup of your C drive, deleting every file that you don't need.
Running "Disk Cleanup" in Extended mode, would at least be someplace to start.

!  Since XP only takes up about 12 to 15 gig's of HD space, it looks like you've acquired a lot of "junk" on that drive.

If you have Hibernate turned on, then turn it off, to eliminate that HUGE 'Hiberfil.sys' file.

I've seen messes every bit as bad on customer's PC's, and it's totally fixable, but it does take some time, effort and a certain level of Expertise,
to know what to delete and what to leave alone.
For instance, if you've had XP for a number of years and you've had Auto Updates turned on, then you have a g'zillion update UN-Install folders in the Windows sub directory.  They are easy to spot because they all start with a dollar sign ($).
You must have Windows Explorer set to "Show Hidden Files" in order to see all those.
Those can all be deleted as well as their CORRESPONDING KB******.log files, further down in the Windows directory.
At least, that's someplace to start.

You Could also download and run my XPCleanup.bat program (batch File) from my website.
http://www.drwho.in

You listed NO security program that I would trust to make sure that you don't have Spyware, Adware, Trojans or tracking cookies on your PC.
What you did list, won't do that.  At the very minimum, I'd be running "Malware Bytes" on that PC.

Good Luck!
The Shadow  DLoad and give Auslogics Disk Defrag a try...
I've been using it for years...did i mention it's Free ? ?Shadow,
   Thanks for the reply.
I have no doubt that I have accumulated a good bit of junk on “C” as I have had the machine running on this installation of XP for a long time. I have a second drive, “D”, a 1.5 TB internal drive, for everything other than the operating system and programs but I’m sure “C” NEEDS to have a more through cleaning of “junk”.
I do not have Hibernate turned on but Auto Update is turned on so I can start there with the un-install folders and KB…log files. I am already set to show hidden files and folders.  I do run Ghost 15 and make a restore point once a day (also saved on my second hard drive).
I will take your advice and install “Malware Bytes”. From time to time, I have run Spybot S & D but it almost never turns up anything for whatever reason. It may well be that I don’t know what I’m doing.
At the beginning of your reply, when you said I should “…format that free space as an NTFS drive” do you mean for me to create a partition? If so, this is not something I have ever done.
I am inclined to run your XPCleanup.bat given my lack of knowledge of where to look for “junk” beyond the items you have suggested. I want to do the best job on this machine that I can. Being retired, I have the time and I’m willing to put out the effort but that “certain level of expertise” is going to be a snag.
Thanks again for your suggestions. I know The Shadow Knows.
           KenHi patio,

"DLoad and give Auslogics Disk Defrag a try..."

I gave your suggestion a try. I had tried a couple of third party defrag programs in the past that did not seem to resolve the way Windows Defrag sees the state of my drive. Auslogics does. I have attached a screen shot after I ran Auslogics and then analyzed with Windows. It no longer appears fragmented.   I'm still curious about the fact that the drive shows so full when, in fact, it's only at about 10%. Do I need to "Compress"?

Ken

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]No...
Do NOT compress.
PS your reading it wrong...90% of that HDD is free...Hi patio,

Sorry if I expressed myself in an inelegant manner. I should have completed the sentence ... in fact, it's only about 10%" full.

I will not compress and I will call this "Solved". Thank you very much! While I was looking for what I could do with The Shadows suggestion, I found a program with no UN-installer but that's a subject for another thread. There's always something...

Kenkortmann,
after some experiments, I was able to duplicate the "Anomolus defrag results" using a different scenario.
My conclusion is: Thee is nothing wrong with the drive. What defrag  shows is It is an aberration. No explanation.
Hi Geek-9pm,

Thanks for your effort. I was 90% sure there was no problem with the drive but...  Having tried a couple of other defrag programs without getting rid of it and other folks saying "that drive's a mess", it was really startin' to bug me. I'm sure there IS a fair amount of junk on my machine. Just not THAT much. Don't you just hate "aberrations"?

Solve : Run macshift.exe command in batch file?

Answer»

Hi Guys,

I want to use the below command USING batch file

start "C:\Documents and Settings\backupadmin\Desktop\macshift" macshift -r -i "Local Area Connection" if i save this in notepad and run as .bat file it just opens the macshift folder .My question is I want to run the macshift -r -i "Local Area Connection" using batch file .

Please any HELP will be appreciated.

Regards
Alfred
Start command SYNTAX is not correct. In any case you probably don't need to use it.

First suggestion: delete the word "start" at the beginning of the line.

Alternatively:

rewrite like this

cd /d "C:\Documents and Settings\backupadmin\Desktop\macshift"
macshift -r -i "Local Area Connection"

Come back if neither RESOLVES the problem.
Thanks its working......

How do I remove the KAZAA icon from Add/Remove files, It will not go off just flashes once and its still there! Ooops.  At least you know what the problem is.
You may have to BOOT to Safe Mode (F8 on computer STARTUP).  First download these spyware REMOVERS:

Now you need a Kid Blocker!

I have some errors they occurred on my windows NT SERVER desktop, my question is: Can i CLOSE them using BATCH file just to select the opened windows and press enter.
Thank youI have an analogy for you. Imagine your car's engine cut out whenever you went over 15mph. You can SOLVE it by pushing a ferret into your exhaust to clean out the entire engine/exhaust system, or you can get a new engine. What you want to do is create some strage contraption which automatically feeds ferrets into your tailpipe as you drive. What I would do is replace the engine.

Okay, so my analogies are crap. But I would do is find the source of the problem, rather than try and mitigate the consequences. We MIGHT be able to help with the error messages: we just need some information. What are the error messages you get?

Solve : Installing win7pro on a second hard drive on the same computer running XP Pro?

Answer»

I have a computer with dual hard drives and would like to install win 7 on the second drive, the C drive runs win XP proYou should be able to just Windows 7 with no problems.
Of course, having a practical backup plan is a good idea.

Another OPTION is to disable the first drive. You can do that in the BIOS or just remove the power and data plugs. Windows 7 will then install on the second drive, but naming it C: for Windows n7.

Once you have Windows 7 up and RUNNING. you can hook up the first  drive again . (After turning off the power, of course.) Or reboot select which of the two drives to START form the BIOS BOOT menu. This may seem rather odd, but it is the most conservative way to have two OS's  on one computer. No need for and boot manager SOFTWARE. Let the BIOS do it all. That is way they made it.

With Windows XP it does not matter if Windows 7 claims to be on C: when it is not. The terms C: D: E: are not the real physical address of the drives. Therefore it helps  to put labels on the drives to tell them apart.
Example:
SATA1 partition 1 label "WIN XP PRO 32"
SATA2 partition 1 label "Win 7 Pro 64"

That is my best commendation. Personally, I have and use both Windows XP and Windows 7 on my personal computers at home.

Solve : XP desktop data loss?

XP desktop data loss

Hello all, I have some important lost photos to find.

It all started with a new computer upgrade.

Old computer was running XP with photos on the desktop 1TB drive with partition

The new computer upgrade is running windows  7 with a 2 TB drive no partition

Okay I plug in my old 1TB drive as a extra drive for data only but have no access to

my old windows desktop files at all.

It comes up as with a SIZE of 292 GB in total with 12 GB free that is true.

But when opening the drive to access files there is only  9.13 GB to access.

There was no issues with the old drive while running under XP.

The only hardware I kept on the upgrade was my computer case.

I am missing lots of family photos so any help would be fantastic :]

Hi

When you were booting into XP were you using a logon with password ?. If so the files in your profile will not be visible under windows. You could try parted magic and boot from that CD and use the file manager to browse the drive. Look for the pictures in Documents and settings\"username"\Desktop.

Solve : word doc attacment question?

Answer»

Hi guys, sorry to trouble the forum with such a novice question, but IM a little older and unfortunately got behind the wave and left behind(lol).
Im trying to send an ATTACHMENT  which contains my resume.Ive sent it to a dupe address so I can ensure  what the prospective employer will see. When I open the attachment all the corrections that Word suggested still show up. The format of the resume has a lot of "bullet" type points and word Identifies them as Fragments.I have gone through the document a half dozen times "telling" word to ignore the "error" and saving the newly minted "clean" document under a new save name, but without fail when I slect my "new"(and corrected) as the attachement and mail it to my "dupe" address ,all the auto correct suggestions re-appear.
Is this becasue that although Im in an e-mail account my computer Identifies the doc as something that originated from the same source?
My fear is that if I send it with all the red aquggles all over it that the HR people will just laugh and FEEL like If I cant accomplish something as simple as proofung a document then maybe Im not the rif=ght guy for the job. Im sure Im doing something very obvious in the wrong way....TRY and give the corrected doc a different name...send it to yourself again and review...
Word may be opening it from the MRU list (most recently used) list by default...I'm not sure if this exactly answers your question, but you do realise that if you open a document in Word it will be displayed according to the spelling and grammar checking settings in force in that particular Word (on your computer)? If you have Word set to show spelling mistakes with a red squiggle underneath, that's what you'll see. What I am trying to say is that the red squiggles are not "in" the document, they are added by Word because of your settings.
Thank you both very much....I had suspicions of both answers but am too much a novice to be sure...I was concrened about how the document will appear to the person opening it...It is my hope that at the "other end" there will be no such "reciept" filter that will show the same "concerns" most of the things Word wants me to correct are sentence fragments which are unaviodable in the format my resume is writtenIt seems you can do this: Tools / Options / Spelling & Grammar... check "Hide spelling errors in this document" and "Hide grammatical errors in this document" (Then click OK). If you check these boxes, only the present document is affected, and spelling errors will be hidden on any machine on which it is opened, regardless of the Spelling & Grammar Options settings.

Yes, but once he's told Word to Ignore, or Ignore All, for a particular mistake, and saved that file, those mistakes should not appear again when that file is reopened.  And, he did say:

If you check these boxes, only the present document is affected, and spelling errors will be hidden on any machine on which it is opened, regardless of the Spelling & Grammar Options settings.

I just tried this out... I opened MS Word 2003 on my main PC and created a document with some spelling and grammar errors. These were highlighted by Word in red and green respectively. Then I went to Tools, Options, Spelling & Grammar and checked "Hide Spelling Errors in this document" and "Hide grammatical errors in this document". Then I saved the document on a network drive and went to another PC and opened the same document. The errors were not marked. However, in the second Word session, I could uncheck those boxes, and the markings were again visible.

I then went back to the first PC and emailed the document as an attachment to a colleague and got her to open it in Word and it was the same. Errors hidden, but easily revealed.

My take on this: better to avoid making errors in the first place, than worry about hiding them, because a sufficiently determined recipient is going to notice them whatever you do. (There are some people in this world who can spot spelling mistakes without the help of a computer program.)

Also: beware saving the document with all the editing history! I bet this has lost more job chances than any other mistake!

The format of the resume has a lot of "bullet" type points and word Identifies them as Fragments.
That doesn't make sense to me.  Word doesn't care about punctuation if you use the Bullets tool to create bullets.  Did you use Word's Bullets tool or did you just use your own technique to make bullets?

I'm also wondering whether you used a resume/CV template for your resume.  Not using one of the templates and just trying to create a resume from a regular blank Word document is the hard way to create a resume. yes, I failed to "tell" word I was using Bullets.
When I had in the past utilized there formatting, they put the little "dots" infront of the bullets.
As I have revised the document over the years I chose to eliminate their "dot" format.Additionally, there are several proper names for institutions and places that are not in the word thesaurus, so while I completely undrstand the idea that it would make sense to just comply with whatever "word" wants,in some cases it isnt really possible to make "word" happy(lol).

Im not thinking that the HR department would be interested in parsing the document for errors regarding dangling partciples and the like, but if it opens with all the color,it might appear so flawed as to cause a sincere concern to the viewer. I will try the "hide" errors approach...The nature of the errors isnt spelling, that I did ensure, but trying to comply with what "word" wants me to do, is further compounded by the fact that even when I accept their corrections, and save the document under a new name ,when I open it as an attachment sent to my dupe email account Word still identifies the same fragments and such as errors. So, do you actually have a visible bullet?  Were you trying to avoid using one of Word's bullet images to save space, or what? By the way, Word PROVIDES many alternative images for bullets. You can even create one and use it.

Solve : Removing programs / icons from the taskbar?

Answer»

I have XP sp3.  How can I STOP some of the programs from running that have icons on the task BAR?

I would like to stop some of these programs from being executed at start up.

Thank you. There are any number of ways to do what you want, but the easiest is with a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml). Download it, run it, uncheck any items you don't want loading at boot. That's it.I downloaded Mike's program and ran it through the Control Panel.

However none of the programs running on my task bar are mentioned.  In fact there is only one program listed, which I run in startup.

I usually control the startup through msconfig but these task bar programs appear to be untouchable.1) msconfig is a diagnostic UTILITY and should not be used to make permanent changes to startup processes

2) A more comprehensive startup manager is Process Explorer. I generally prefer recommending Startup Control Panel because Process Explorer is as comprehensive as it is, but you can certainly download and use it: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

3) What programs are we talking about? There's nothing StartupCPL doesn't see...we need more info at this point as if it didn't work for you something is AMISS...Thank you.  I hope this works.

I have programs like skype, dropbox, etc. that I rarely use (but someday might), and I think they MAY be running in the background.  My system is slow enough already without that.

Solve : Ntoskrnl.exe is Missing or Corrupt.?

Answer»

Trying to dual boot my laptop, Managed to get it done before except for the product key not working for Windows XP so i purchased a new copy of windows XP and ran the install. It gets as far as the point where it finishes formatting and requests a restart

After i restart i get cannot find windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe file is missing or corrupt.

Looked around and there are lots of online fixes but none seem to work

I ran chkdsk r\ and it found and fixed a problem, tried install again with full formatting and again same problem. Tried to copy the file from the installation disk and recieved "file could not be copied" error, Try renaming the file ON the computer and then copying but file appears to be completely missing....

I attempted to install Windows XP Pro SP3 onto a PARTITION on my laptop. Install went fine but product key failed to ACTIVATE. After some wrangling with Microsoft i learned that OEM software couldn't be used if there was a major hardware change ( there had been ) So I purchased a new copy of windows XP pro SP3 from Softwarespeedy.

What I am wondering is can i use the old copy of Windows that installed fine to install up to the point where it finishes formatting and restarts and then finish the install and use the new product key from the new copy of windows i purchased?OEM windows install likes to see a hard drive that is clean like a new one.. Before wiping disk I attempted to install with Old OS disk which i knew to work, Ntoskrnl.exe error there too

I have tried wiping the Partition with [email protected] Kill disk and re-installed with the New OS disk I have, Received the EXACT same error.

Attempted to use the expand e:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ d:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

command, It says it susccesfully COPIES the ntoskrnl.exe file but upon reboot gives me the exact same ntoskrnl.exe error.

I'm wondering if I should have used a different disk wipe program ?

Where did you buy this XP CD from ? ?
Did you have any issues with this Optical drive prior to this ? ?never had issues before.

The disk was purchased from SoftwareSpeedy a micrsoft partner among other things and the first disk i purchased from them i checked with microsoft and microsoft agreed it was a valid disk

The 1st OS bought from the installed perfectly fine the first two times i used it ( Second time i REALIZED due to it being OEM i needed to buy a new OS to install )

That said, I second your advice regarding the full installer. The Full Installer (rather than the bootstrapper) can be downloaded directly from here.

Solve : Ways to speed up pc performance without adding new components??

Answer»

Hi guys,

I need a guru-type step-by-step explanation on the known ways to get more out my machine, cuz right now I don't have the extra money to invest in RAM memory or any other component...

So I'm  out for help here! I did the defr, cleaned it, have a lot of empty space on C partition, etc.

The bottom line is that I can't play (let's say minecraft) games even though i have 1gb of DDR2 ram, 512gb ram graphic card, 3.2gHz daul CORE processor...

Is there a hope, or am I doomed to play solitaire for the rest of my life (or until I get some extra money) ?
 1) You need to explain your problem(s) in detail. Saying you can't play minecraft doesn't explain what happens when you try. EXACTLY what are the symptoms your system is displaying?

2) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?Is that a copy/paste question? Cuz you always write that!

Anyway, it runs slow as my gramma walks, and she walks REALLY slow! I've put the distance to the MINIMUM, resolution to 800x600, openGL, and other things that I could, and it's running windowed. I always turn off EVERY program and before running it.

Soo, I've runned out of ideas to speed it up..You did not answer the second question.

Also, have you run full SCANS with BOTH your installed anti virus app AND with MalwareBytes? If not, please do so now.Sorry Allan, yes I have and it's clean as a baby's *censored*.If you have done all that regular maintenence and have a clean bill of health then i'm afraid it is what it is...You can cut down the NUMBER of processes loading with the OS. Download and run Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml). Uncheck any items you don't need loading with the OS and reboot. Let's see if that helps.

Solve : Formatting Laptop Hard Drive?

....I have tried downloading a MSDOS boot disk (from bootdisk.com) but this has not worked. .

I am familiar with the Dell Latitude CP.  The Floppy Disk Drive module is separate from the CDROM drive module.  You only have the floppy disk drive module and no CDROM module, right?

Your doing something wrong with the boot disk.  You should be able to fdisk and format the hard drive, so it will boot to the C:>

My advice would be to obtain the CDROM module.  Not having a CDROM will cause you nothing but GRIEF.  The only way I can think of to install windows is with FastLynx or LapLink, which can use a serial or parallel cable, parallel is a lot faster.  FastLynx is SMALL enough to fit on the boot floppy.  You then COPY the entire Windows CD to a temporary directory on the 4GB drive.  Then you can install Win98. Quote

Could you explain how I should acquire and use the boot disk properly, please.
Obtain a proper bootdisk from http://www.bootdisk.de.

You cannot install an operating system from a bootdisk, if that's what you're thinking.. You need it to install a pre-Windows XP OS. Quote

When you download the bootdisk image file (To your hard drive!) put a clean formatted floppy in the A: drive  and double-click on the image file and it will MAKE you a floppy bootdisk.

When you now put this floppy into YOUR computer it should start up on the bootdisk.

Choose Minimal boot to get to the DOS prompt and type:

A:\>format c: /s

I have used a boot disk and sucessfully installed MS DOS on my laptop. I have the Windows 98 OS on a CD and have transferred this on to my desktop computer. Can I now transfer this to my laptop using parallel cables? If so, what file transfer programs will I need?Hi,

Here is another idea for you. But you will need to do a bit of surgery on your laptop and your desktop. Few of my clients had the similar problem. The DVD/CD drive in laptop die on them, they couldn't  reinstall the OS to their HD. What I did was I brought a adaptor from Drive Solution Inc. -- http://www.drivesolutions.com. It's only about $10.

Now here is the fun part. All this adaptor does is to convert the tiny pins on the laptop HD to the standard IDE of your desktop. You can open up your desktop and yank out the HD in your desktop. (!!!!MAKE SURE YOU SHUT DOWN YOU DESKTOP BEFORE YOU DO THAT!!!)

Then you can then plug you laptop HD via the adpter to your desktop as a primary drive. Go to the BIO of your desktop to set the CD-ROM as your boot drive and install Win98 to your laptop drive.

Then you pop your HD back to the laptop and put the desktop HD back, everything is golden.

This worked great for me and alot of my clients, however, you may run into a little gilchs. Just be patient, sometimes it takes a few tries.

***I can't emphsize enought that when you SWAP drives this way, always make sure you shut down your desktop and you laptop before you unplug the HD, and always backup everything  before you start the operation.

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

I'm getting these two warnings every time I boot my dual-boot Windows 8 and XP computer. Does anyone know where in the Registry I should look for them?

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Did you TRY checking the Autorun startup PROGRAMS or unchecking any file not found components under Everything tab or LOGON tab? Autoruns.

The specific location is usually
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

(HKLM=HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKCU=HKEY_CURRENT_USER). Autoruns lists startup items from other locations.

Thanks BC. I ran the autoruns and it cleaned them up. Good little PROGRAM.

Solve : Blackout?

Answer»

I USE Windows xp with firefox and MacAfee security suite through TWC/RR. After I log in successfully, anytime I press a key to GO to a next step or read emails or whatever, the screen goes black.I must scroll my arrow from bottom to top to get rid of the black but it STILL remains in the BORDER. Is this some kind of VIRUS? My security suite runs daily and is telling me there are no problems. Can anyone help?I donno. Hard to diagnose.
But have you recently made any changes ton your system?
Have you installed a new video driver? a hardware accelerator?
What happens when you boot in safe mode?

Solve : Windows turn on, suddent shutdown?

Answer»

Hi,

I got an Acer Aspire 4736Z.
I did try this with both newly formatted windows xp / 7 and both shutdown while booting up.
Sometimes, i manage to see the desktop for a while, then it shutdown without any ERROR or warning.
Sound's like overheat, yes, i did tear it all apart & do cleaning, all the fans, apply thermal paste & still happened.

The laptop won't shutdown if i let the system on BIOS or in windows xp safe mode.
I dont think it is a virus because it is formatted, freshly, and so many times.

Any ideas are appreciated since i am stuck here.   From what you say, this would appear to be a driver or chip set issue.

Boot up Windows 7 in safe mode. Now use the CD that CAME with your motherboard and install the chip-set drivers again. Does that fix the problem?I'm with windows XP, i will download the driver & install it in safe mode.
Will post any result later.

Thank you for suggestion mate!Update :

All driver installed, still shutdown if boot normal, but fine in safe mode.

Boot normal only till windows xp loading screen, then shutdown, no BSOD or error. What happens with a selective startup (run msconfig and choose "selective startup" - uncheck all 3 boxes - and reboot)? Quote from: Allan on April 28, 2013, 04:18:02 AM

Thank you for suggestion, tried & still fail (shutdown)

I did swap the HDD & this drive is good with my other computer. 100% sure the drive not fail.
I ALSO update the BIOS to the latest version before this, but it's not about BIOS.

Need more ideas, thank you.You swapped the HDD...was Windows already installed on it from the other PC ? ? Quote from: patio on April 28, 2013, 08:04:06 AM

When i got this laptop, it already had a windows xp in it. I turn it on & the shutdown problem as i describe shows (OK in safe mode)
I pull it out & try on another pc, and its working.

Back to the old laptop, i format it from there but it shutdown while loading windows xp / 7 installation setup.
I cant proceed at all.

I use my own pc to format the HDD with windows xp.
It boot normal in my pc but not in that laptop, but works in safe mode.

Hope this help or we might get some clues from it.

There's no upgrade path from XP to 7...
How did you format it ? ?
And what exactly does it say on this Win7 DVD ? ? Quote from: patio on April 28, 2013, 09:58:57 AM
