Solve : Windows XP Home Edition- Restore to Factory Settings?

Answer»

Hi, I have an older computer that I am trying to clean up. It is an emachine T2042 and I've had it for about 8 years. Regretfully, I haven't taken very good care of it. For a long time it has been running very slow and install windows continuously pop up. So, I want to restore it to factory SETTINGS. I have done this before on my new computer. However, my new computer runs on Windows XP MEDIA Center. I was wondering if it is possible to restore my old computer, running on Home Edition, back to factory settings? I have tried defragmenting, clearing out files, checking for viruses and spam, and nothing has helped.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! If you're not worried about saving any files you have currently saved on the computer, you may want to find the recovery CDs that came with the emachine and use them to restore your computer.

Of course, that only helps if you have the recovery CDs...

Do you?No, I don't have any recovery CDs. I was never given any when I bought the computer. I actually want to clear out all of the information because the computer is going to a FRIEND (Which is why I'm trying to fix it up). Then see if there is a program installed on it, by eMachine, that will actually use a hidden partition that stores all the factory settings.

If so, you can use that program to recover your computer to its factory settings.

If there isn't one, and you don't want to spend the money for recovery CDs, then you can simply format the hard drive to remove your information and have the person you're giving the computer to install their own operating system.

Those seem to be your only alternatives. How do I know if a program like that is on it? I don't even know where to look or what to look for....If the computer boots into windows, click the Start menu button and select 'All Programs'.

Look for a menu item for a program supplied by eMachine...I'm not sure if they have such a program, but will research it for you if need be.

Basically what we're looking for is a program that may say 'eMachine Recovery' or 'Recovery' or something similar. Don't confuse it with Windows XP Recovery or System Restore.

Hopefully, this will help...if not, I'll see what I can find out from eMachine...okay?The only thing that I can find is the System Recovery (which hasn't worked in probably 2 years). I even went and did a search through the computer for "recovery" and I came up with nothing.... When you start your computer on the Emachines loading screen, do you see f10= recovery or something. If you can't find the program...or if you don't have the option unlovedwarrior recommended in his post...you have two options:

1) Purchase the Recovery CDs from eMachine.

2) Format the drive to remove your info and let the new owner be responsible for installing an operating system.

If anyone else has an idea...we're all ears...Dell's hardware and drivers tend to be proprietary so, this might not work, as you've had a new motherboard installed. If your Dell System was purchased post 7/14/2004? At the Biostar SPLASH screen hit and hold the Ctrl key, then hit the F11 key once, releasing both the Ctrl + F11 keys simultaneously. If everything is still good, you should get the PC Restore utility by Symantec. This will restore your system to the factory "out-of the-box" state. If it doesn't work then the utility has been deleted or corrupted by the motherboard replacement and will not work...Good Luck!6 Year bump...

Solve : How To plan to restore XP if needed after 2014.?

Answer»

No, I don't mean system restore. Let me explain. Here are quotes quotes below.

Windows XP is an operating system produced by Microsoft and first released to COMPUTER manufacturers on August 24, 2001.

On April 10, 2012, Microsoft reaffirmed that extended support for Windows XP and Office 2003 would end on April 8, 2014 and suggested that administrators begin preparing to migrate to a newer OS.

According to web analytics data generated by Net Applications, Windows XP was the most widely used operating system until August 2012, when Windows 7 overtook it.[20] As of February 2013, Windows XP market share is at 38.99%, having decreased almost every month

Here is my quesion. I have older wquipment lahying arund that I would like to use sometimes. I have COA for each. I know that a motherboard might noutlive its hard drive. So in the event of a hard drive faiure, will I be able to install XP again? I have heard that a new hard drive alternates the activation process and I will have a problem.

How can I activate Windows XP after the 2014 shut off? ?
How do I install the security updates that came after SP3?
The Activation Servers aren't being shut down. And you may want to DLoad and burn all the security updates to date after SP3 in case thay aren't gonna be available...
However i wouldn't sweat it as if you need those for Win2k for example they can still be had...If activation servers were ever a threat of being shut down, Ghost 2003 is a perfect pair up for not having to reactivate XP ever again on that same computer as long as there are no drastic HARDWARE changes. You can have these systems built to Windows XP SP3 with the last of the updates saved to a couple DVD-R discs labelled as a recovery set for that machine. If the hard drive failed. Pop in another 40GB IDE hard drive and push the image to that hard drive. The images would likely outlive the computer all together if kept in a safe place in a jewel case.

I have 2 or 3 jewel cases inside my Windows XP towers resting on the bottom in case I ever need to restore them back to clean state. Just need to pop the side cover off and boot off of DVD1 and then pop in DVD2 and DVD3 in order as requested by ghost. When all is done DVD discs go back inside in their protective jewel cases and back inside the computer case for next time.

*I started implementing this when I was losing track of where I put my system recovery discs. This one MCSE was showing me something the one day with a RAID controller and I was like..." HEY!!! Now that is a Smart Idea!!!" He had an ESD bag inside the tower duct taped to the inside chasis with the Floppy disks and other software for that server. Since that day, I try to remember to keep the recovery discs inside the system occupying some of the wasted space which is perfect for safe storage and always having it when needed!

Very True! Rebuilt a old Compaq EVO 2 weeks ago from its red system recovery disc for Windows 2000 Professional and was able to get SP4 and others easily.I'm glad to hear, that I'm not the only Ghost 2003 user left in the world.

I can bring the recovery from a hard drive CRASH down to a 15 minute process, using Ghost and a backup image file, located somewhere off of the main HD.
It can be on any type of removable media, even a second internal hard drive.

I used Ghost 2003, from a DOS boot disk, till I ran into windows 7. Ooooops!
Ghost 2003 could not deal with the new type of MBR on Win-7.

But Symantec also knew this, so they upgraded Ghost 2003 to Ghost 11.5.
It looks and runs exactly like Ghost 2003, but it's larger and won't fit on a floppy disk like Ghost 2003 would.
So, I run it from either a CD or a Flash Drive.

On my boot disk, I also have a number of batch files, to do various cleanup operations on the HD before making a backup.
Deleting all the junk files, old restore points and the Pagefile, cuts the size of my backups by several Gigabytes.
I can even access an NTFS drive, from my DOS boot disk, because my DOS boot disk contains NTFS4DOS, which allows me
to access an NTFS drive C in DOS.

I've been at this a long time and I've learned how to accommodate for just about any eventuality.

Just for fun, recently I Googled "Ghost 11.5" and found an ISO to a boot CD somewhere out there........(not sayin' where)

As Fox Mulder would SAY, "The Truth is out there!"

Interesting thread

Thanks to all. In fact, I do have a old copy of Norton Ghost. Will put it to use,

Good to know that Win 7 works with Ghost 11.5. I was saddened when I ran into same issue of Ghost 2003 not supporting 7 As for it is an awesome tool, or was an awesome tool for older systems such as Windows 2000 Pro and Windows XP that I used it on both at home and at work.

One tool I made for myself with Ghost 2003 was that most computers no longer have floppy drives, so I took a floppy disk that I configured for use with Intel Pro 100 NIC driver with static IP of 130.0.0.2 and migrated it from 1.44MB Floppy Disk to a CD labelled as my Ghost Network Disc. I then installed Intel Pro 100 NIC's into these systems in the available PCI slots that were not in use and this way they had no problems linking up to the Ghost 2003 NDIS2 NIC driver. Booted the systems to take the image as slaves off this CD and told it to run as slave.

Then connected to the network I have another Windows XP computer that holds all the images on its local hard drive for the 4 other systems that I have licenses to support ghosting of, and tell that system to boot up with Ghost over Network with IP of 130.0.0.1. Then I tell this image server system that it is master. They then establish a handshake. I then am able to navigate from the system acting as the image server and tell it to push an image of choice over the 100mbps network to the other systems hard drive. In about 10 minutes the ghost process is complete. I then remove the CD from the system that was to take the image as the slave, and reboot computer and its now running off the image that was transferred over the network.

I ended up using Easy CD Creator version 4 or 5 which had a tool to convert bootable floppies to CD, and thats how I made my bootable CD that acts like a floppy disc.

This worked out better for me vs having so many DVD Discs to keep track of etc. All I needed was the bootable CD and I was able to create and restore from images between the system to create and restore images from and the master system that was my image server with a 300GB HDD. * Also its nice to set it and walk away and when you come back its done vs having to insert DVD2, and then DVD3 etc.

*Ghost has the ability to backup to external hard drives, but I found this feature to be hit and miss. Some systems even though they had USB 2.0, were only able to connect at 1.1 speed so it took forever and a day, and you still needed a bootable (disc or disk) to get the system requiring image to accept the image from the external. I found that sending images over the 100mbps network to be way faster and trouble free with a driver matched up to NICs.

I bought 10 qty Intel Pro 100+ Managed PCI NICs off of ebay for $10 with free shipping ( $1 each was a good buy ). I then flashed them all as well to be same firmware and set them up to support PXE in case I ever play around with making a Thinclient/Server box with Linux.

Here is a link to the NIC I used. Ghost has support for many NICs, however pairing up Ghost 2003 with a NIC of its time period is best vs thinking it will work with a NIC that is 10 years newer. http://www.alancomputech.com/intel-pro100-management-h1138-adapter-card-pila8460b-pila8460b.html?gclid=CNrg89njlrcCFWRyQgod6V8A1QGhost is not the only choice for imaging...

I don't think it was i that needed more info...but Thanx.Norton Ghost is a great one. But for anyone viewing this Thread that doesn't have a copy lying around there is a great piece of software that is a lot like ghost.

Macruim reflect. You can get a free copy legally from their cite. It too takes an iso image of your drive partition but the downer to it is that it It makes the ISo on a separate drive and you gotta make a linux boot CD and using that CD it finds the iso. Restoring takes about 20 minutes. Works great for me.

Anywhere i can get a copy of ghost though? cause im still a XP user in my household. The PING ("Partimage Is Not Ghost") project
http://ping.windowsdream.com/I have checked out PING before and only drawback is that it does not perform a direct burn to CD or DVD like Ghost. There is a way to manually make a bootable ISO for a DVD set, but its more involved than most people want as shown here:

http://ping.windowsdream.com/ping/doc-2.01/bootiso.html

The one thing I am initerested in checking out though is PINGs Image Server over network abilities. Which would be pretty close to what i was doing with Ghost 2003 over network, and the ability to boot using PXE is sweet, as for no boot disc or disk needed. http://ping.windowsdream.com/ping/doc-2.01/using.html

Going to read into setting up PXE boot service with PING and try it out. Will need to use a switch that is not connected to my regular network otherwise I'd have 2 x DHCP's competing probably even if only 1 of them offers the PXE service and the other is just the routers DHCP service. http://ping.windowsdream.com/ping/doc-2.01/pxe.html

Also to note Clonezilla is another thatI checked into and was not sold onto it as a replacement as for it just reminds me of DD Quote from: comda on May 15, 2013, 08:20:32 AM

You are confused. Macrium creates a proprietary drive image of the drive or partition to be "backed-up". It is not an ISO image. You can create a boot CD or boot USB in either Linux or WinPE. The process of creating the boot device can create an ISO image in order to build the boot device.

Macrium is compatible with XP, Vista, 7, 8.

Solve : dell dimension 1100 and I cannot boot from cd drive or access bios?

Answer»

I have a dell dimension 1100 and I cannot boot from cd drive or access bios
settings...

The operating system runs flawlessly but I wanted to boot spin-rite and found
I could not boot from cd so I tried to access bios but every time I TRY to start
the computer and hit any of the F keys the computer quits booting completely.

If I power down the pc and restart, it starts of up fine. So I cannot access boot
settings or the bios...

Any suggestions would be appreciated...Using a PS2 Keyboard it looks like you want to press F2 ACCORDING to google search. There was a person trying to do this with a USB keyboard and had issues. Is your keyboard USB or PS2? If its USB, then you need to FIND a PS2 type connector keyboard to USE to get into BIOS.

http://www.manualslib.com/manual/227496/Dell-Dimension-1100.html?page=88

F2 to enter BIOS
F12 to select a boot device without altering BIOS ( used for 1 time boots of CD or DVD without altering the boot order of BIOS )I have a PS2 Connecting keyboard ...

When I press F2 or F12 the computer just sits idle and will not boot at all...

As soon as I press the start button on the tower I repeatedly press the keys...

I have tried both F2 and F12... Nada!

Nothing happens, pc won't boot at all. I have to power down before I can get
the pc to boot in regular mode..

It does boot up fine just in regular mode..

I have searched google to see if anyone else has had this issue to no avail..

Do you think I need to just get a new keyboard?...the key board worked fine on my old hp I had and never had any problems getting into bios, safe mode, or boot sequence..

and Thanks for replying to my post...appreciate it much.,

Kirk
I'd certainly try another keyboard...PS2 PREFERABLY.

Solve : External DVD Writer Problem?

Answer»

Hi.

i spent the whole day searching the internet for solution to my problem.

Last night i bought an LG SGA-5120D external DVD BURNER, because my laptop does not have a dvd burner.

I connected the drive to my laptop through a USB cable but then a warning message popped that read "HI-SPEED USB Device Plugged into non-HI-SPEED USB Hub" so i used an IEEE 1394 cable instead. The dvd burner was connected and installed but the problem is i couldn't burn dvds on the drive. when i go to "My Computer" the name of the drive shows as "DVD-RAM Drive (E:)" and when i insert a blank DVD-R or DVD+RW the name changes to "CD Drive (E:)" and when i click it i get this message "Winows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with windows" but the drive can still read music CDS.
and when i try burning movie files or any other files by going to the folder and highlighting the file and selecting "Move this file" and choosing the new drive i get the same message "windows cannot read from this disk. the disk might be corrupted or it could be using a format that is not compatible with windows".
the weird thing is the drive can read music CDs and movie DVDs but when i insert a blank DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW and click on the drive i get the error message. and the drive is supposed to read and burn all types of media.

i don't know what to do, i re-installed the drive and ran the troubleshooter and updated the anti-virus and ran it several times, and in the device manager it tells me the drive is working fine.

sorry it took so long but i want to know if there is a way to fix this. and i want to know if the problem is from my computer or the drive. Please help what DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW disks are used...what space is your HARD drive;ram size;operating SYSTEM...did the lg come with software for burning..and if you strip a dvd down to copy it you will get two films on it? Solve : Faster destkop search?

Answer»

I need to find all the files created on a specific day. The default Windows search takes to long. I've been looking for faster desktop search PROGRAMS, which isn't to hard, but I can't find one that searches for files created on a specific date without having to search for a name. Is there any program that can do this?If you know then date, and if you known you stored in in My Documents, you can shorten the search time tenfold.
File name is *.*
Give the exact date.
Look in My Documents.
Of course, you should make it a habit to always keep r documents in the My Documents FOLDER, or a sub folder.

Mythicsoft's Agent Ransack (which is a free version of their File Locator Pro) is IMHO very good - I have been using it in Windows XP and Windows 7 for some time - you can leave the file type blank (all files) or use a wild card and also choose a date or range of dates for each of these or just one: created/modified/last accessed, and lots more (lots!), export results to text or csv. A very POWERFUL TOOL, you can add it to the right click menu in Windows Explorer, and it's fast too. I don't work for them!

Solve : L2 cache?

I have a Zenith Director model Z8081 Laptop. The processor is Intel M 1.70GHz with 2MB of L2 cache. All this started after I changed the CMOS battery. Is this a concern or a normal thing? Please COMMENT.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]After REPLACEMENT of a CMOS battery in any PC, one must go into the BIOS and select the options desired for bust performance. This may not be the default settings. Default settings are sometimes the safer settings. Check the BIOS.Thanks Geek.

Thank you in advance for any help!Perhaps it's just me, but I have no idea what you're talking about.I"m also not sure I understand your issue but I have the impression you want Firefox to be your default browser and you've inadvertently changed it to Internet Explorer. So, assuming IE is set as the default browser, you should see a question from Firefox, when you open it, asking whether you want to make it the default browser. If so, answer yes. If you do not see that question APPEAR when you open Firefox, this COULD indicate you checked a box telling Firefox not to ask again. In that case, this reference can help you reset Firefox as default: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/43506/how-to-change-the-default-web-browser-in-windows/Soybean, thank you! Solve : MySQL & XP Firewall Issue?

Answer»

So I have a mySQL database running on a computer that is running Windows XP Pro SP3.
I also have another computer also running Windows XP Pro SP3 that is to connect to this other systems mySQL database as a client to the server.

If I shut off the firewall on the system that is serving up MySQL, everything works perfect. If I enable the firewall on this system that is serving up MySQL database the communications are blocked, so I know that I need to add an exception for MySQL to communicate on this system acting as a MySQL database server.

I tried adding the MySQL to list of exceptions as well as opening up port 3306 which is the default port for MySQL and still not working.

Prior to this issue, I had an issue where MySQL was only offering communications with the local machine at 127.0.0.1
I fixed this by telling it to open up communications to all via this example of instructions from shell at mySQL prompt.

Quote

$ mysql -U root -p
Enter password:
mysql> use mysql
mysql> GRANT ALL ON *.* to [email protected]'192.168.2.1' IDENTIFIED BY 'your-root-password';
mysql> FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

Dont really want to keep the firewall disabled even though this system is not on the DMZ. Want to correct this to have the correct exceptions to have it configured properly.

Anyone else run into this issue and can point out what I might be missing? BTW: The IP of this Windows XP Pro SP3 system acting as a MySQL database server is static at 192.168.2.1, and the other system is also set to static 192.168.2.2 with correct MATCHING subnet etc, same workgroup etc.

*Messing around with Client/Server and MySQL vs just local TESTING on same machine. And thats when I hit these issues.Did you try Port 3307 ? ?
Any clues in Event Viewer ?Will check this out when I get home from 12 hr shift. I connect to it with SQLyog Community edition through user/password/port 3306 locally which is way easier to look at the big picture of the database vs command shell mysql prompt inquirys etc.

Never set up anything manually on port 3307, so I dont THINK anything is using that port, but worth checking into what ports are in use on system to see if any listed alert me to one that might need to be open etc. Will netstat system acting as MySQL server and see. Haven't looked in event viewer yet since nothing was crashing etc. But will take a look in there anyways.Kind of makes no sense, but uninstalled and reinstalled mySQL and that fixed it. Its using port 3306 with firewall exception. It's MS...
It's not supposed to make any sense... Quote

Solve : Windows Product Activation Problem?

Answer»

I recently received a Windows Product Activation window on start-up. It said that I had recently added new hardware - which I did not.

So the window says that Windows must be activated before I log on. Y or N

I hit Y and another window pops up saying that Windows is already activated, hit OK (the only option)

I hit OK and I get the original window back again.

If I hit N on the original window, the window still comes back again.

Help??Did you contact MS ? ?
Seems this issue pops up from time to time here...
They have a Toll Free activation issue # depending on where you are geographically...OK, but I've had XP for over 5 years and I don't have the original CDs nor the sign on activation code.

Perhaps it would be simpler to install my cloned C: drive from a month ago.No need to do so...they will fix it on a phone call... Quote

Perhaps it would be simpler to install my cloned C: drive from a month ago.

You likely reached the 30 days on this cloned not original drive and got locked out of your system as a result of this on that drive. This newer drive was the hardware change, but for some reason it thinks its activated and yet also thinks that it is not. Seen this before with cloning drives on occasion. You have 30 days of use in non microsoft activated state to use the system. Usually you are warned repeatedly via pop ups to register and activate with microsoft. But once the limit is reached it pretty much bricks itself into the state you currently have it in with that other drive. If you are unable to enter an activation code or new KEY anywheres then it may be that the clone copied with a small amount of corruption, so its a broken copy of Windows.

On one occasion I brought a system back from an image and used it for a day and didnt activate it because I didnt think I had to from image state. Shut system down, life got busy, went to fire up this computer over 30 days later and faced the same issue where it was non functional, however I was able to activate it clicking on an option which brought up a phone number to call and a series of boxes for the activation code to be entered in. After the phone call to India trying to understand some gentlemen with very poor english I was able to activate and be back up and running. But if you have no option for activation code etc then its best to swap drives back and create a new backup of this original system.

The good thing is that even though you dont have your original CDs you still have this one healthy (original) drive which activation should not be broken on.

BTW... what software did you use to clone the drive? Acronis software - supposedly the best.

Thanks Dave for your DETAILED reply. I'll swap the drive FIRST, since yes, the current drive is a clone, but then I made a clone of the current drive on my "original" drive, so we'll see what happens.

But like Patio said, if all else fails, I'll call MS and hope for the best.Your a phone call away ...if you dont wanna go thru all that.I'm a phone call away, but without a product code, I don't think they'll help me. I don't have an ID number or anything.I made the call. They tried to get in with safe mode, that didn't work. Then the guy said I have to reinstall windows.

Well I already KNEW that was an option, but without a CD I'm stuck. So he offered to help me if I PAID $145 - *censored*, I could buy a new copy of Windows for a lot less than that!

Time to install the clone.Sorry to hear that. I'd make another clone of that clone when you get a chance. Just in case 30 days from now your back in deja vu. Hopefully you wont be!Just installed the clone. Runs like a charm.

I'll clone it ASAP. If it happens again, I'll know what to do.

Thanks Dave!

Solve : File moving help?

I have an old computer that isn't hooked up to the internet. I want to put some files on it, and the only way I know how to do this is by saving them on a flash-drive and then saving them to that computer. When I plugged in the flash-drive, a window CAME up that said that it had to locate the hardware for the device. I clicked next and it was locating it or whatever, but then it said it couldn't find the correct hardware to open the flash-drive. It asked if I wanted to try again, and I clicked yes, but the same thing came up. Is my computer too old? Flash-drive too new? Am I doing something wrong?!?! please help!

INFO: the computer is a Dimension XPS and operates on Windows '98. This is the first time I've tried to plug in my flash-drive. No, that can happen even with NEWER computers. There are VARIATIONS in USB drives for external devices. Windows a library of the the most common types.

Just try some other flash drives until you find one that it recognizes.

Did you say the old PC runs windows 98?

YEP, it runs on Windows 98!
You need the Unofficial Service Pack for Win98 for limited USB support...
It MAY have been pulled from the web due to copyrights. Quote

I want to put some files on it,
Do you mean just for storage? If so, why not buy an external enclosure for the hard drive in that computer, remove the hard drive from the computer, install it in the enclosure, and then you it as an external hard drive.

Solve : computer shuts down without warning?

Answer»

I need some help ASAP!!! My Compaq Presario 2700 laptop keeps shutting down without warning. It starts up, brings me to my desktop and then i get an "error report" message. Then while my mouse still has the "loading" sign it just shuts down. My fan (which is unusually loud during this PROCESS, as if its overheating) goes off, and the power light turns off. This happens WHETHER its plugged/ unplugged so im guessing its not my battery :-/ Help is much appreciated and needed soon--- my college essays are on there and the due date is soon!Have you tried to do anything hardware-wise to the laptop (overclocking, upgrades etc)?

It might at this point be worth removing the Hard Drive and copying the data onto another HD or other backing storage, or at least just your essays.

Basically, a hardware fault of some kind is all I can think of at this moment in time. Any major changes in the noises your computer makes is not normally a good sign...Control Panel/System/Advanced/Settings (Startup & Recovery)/System Failure/Uncheck-Automatically Restart And also check the power settings to never....Icon If these fail to work...(You can try placing the laptop on wood blocks)...dont laugh...This will improve air flow..And a final thing is to check the bios Power Settings...hthWell I took my computer into COMPUSA this morning and they said I have a major virus of some SORT. They are going to clean the hardware and if the virus is still there they will delete all my files. I can't even back them up now because the virus will just spread. So frustrating! Thanks for the advice though guys Better purchase an anti-virus program, too.

Solve : Change default number of system restore points??

Answer»

I've read that XP's default for saved System RESTORE Points is 90. Is there are way to change this to say 20?

THANKS.I don't know of a way to change the number of restore points, but in Control Panel - System - System Restore you can change the amount of space RESERVED for system restore on a per drive basis, or turn it off entirely if you wish.
Hope this helps.Yes, I am aware of that, but I'm guessing that as the article I was reading used the word "default", then it may IMPLY that it can be changed to a non-default number, unless of cause the author has just used that word while taking into consideration the amount of space that a user allocates for restore points.

Maybe the default number can be changed in Windows registry?

PERHAPS someone with greater knowledge on the subject can provide an answer.

Thanks for your reply. You can remove any points you don;t need.Yes, but that's tedious. Aren't computers supposed to help reduce repetitive tasks like that by doing them according to a schedule or to a script? There is no "default number" of restore points, only how much space is allotted to system restore. Quote from: Allan on May 15, 2013, 04:54:14 AM

Exactly! If you want to wipe out your Restore Points run the cleanup below.Once you click Disk Cleanup it will take you to another screen where you can click on More Options. There you can remove all but your latest Restore Point.

Click Start> Computer> right click the C Drive and choose Properties> enter
Click Disk Cleanup from there.

Click OK on the Disk Cleanup Screen.
Click Yes on the Confirmation screen.

This runs the Disk Cleanup utility ALONG with other selections if you have chosen any. (if you had a lot System Restore points, you will see a significant change in the free space in C drive)

Solve : Need Help to Change the SATA Type in BIOS?

Answer»

Ok so this is my first time on any kind of forum, so hello to all. I am currently running windows XP on my tower however I want to do a fresh install of XP. However I cannot do that if not Hard drive disc is detected when I try. I have been getting the infamous \system32.hall.dll so I want to do a fresh install of Windows. However like i previously said the hard drive doesn't show and says Setup doesnt detect anyhard drive discs when I want to do a fresh install of XP. So what I did was I tried to go to Hard drive settings (SATA RAID BIOS Ver 2.41) but all the options are blotted out and i cant access them so I have to press escape. It also says NOTICE: The number of disks is not adequate to create a RAID!!! in the same screen. So im not sure what that means. I then restart the computer and press delete BUTTON to access the setup utility, then went under Integrated peripherals, however the option 'OnCHIP SATA Type' is not there so i can change the hard drive into IDE mode so It will be able to read. This is what im trying to do, (Link below). Please help me, IVE spent almost an entire day trying to figure this out. I was thinking getting an external hard drive might do the trick, to install windows XP on it but im not sure. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

http://www.bootbeta.com/blog/how-to-change-the-sata-type-in-bios.html Hello and welcome to the forums. What is your motherboard, or your system make and model? The option for SATA type is in different places depending on your specific system. The motherboard is a MSI K8T Neo-FSR (MS-6702) VER: 1.0. Full specs can be found below on the link.
http://www.motherboards.org/mobot/motherboards_d/MSI/K8T%2BNeo-FSR%2B%2528MS-6702%2529/

Oh and i think the hard drive is set up in RAID mode, however i don't have two hard drives atm, only one. Is there any way to disable RAID mode?

Btw, thanks for helping me!OK, have a look in Integrated Peripherals - OnBoard PCI Controller - P230378 S.ATA Controller. What is that set to? I suspect it will be set to RAID, if so change it to SATA.

Edit: yes, the reason this is happening is because it's set to RAID mode, and XP setup doesn't have the driver for that, only for the standard IDE mode. The above should set it back to normal mode, which should let XP setup see the drive, and get it out of RAID mode.Or if you have the MBoard Driver CD then very early on in the setup process it'll say "press F6 to install additional Drivers"...Press F6.
At that point put the MBoard driver CD in ( you can make one by grabbing all drivers from the MBoard manuf. site) and then XP install will continue.
XP will prompt you when it needs the XP CD again and setup will complete.I thought XP only took drivers from floppy disks? Vista and onwards can LOAD drivers from USB sticks which simplifies things, however they also have most of the necessary drivers BUILT in.My XP SP1 CD accepts CD's for Driver installs....There is no 230378 S.ATA Controller, however there VT8237 SATA-IDE Controller and its set to 'enabled'. There is also VT8237 PATA-IDE Controller and set to enabled as well. I see each option, however there is no RAID or SATA options to chose from.

So I should download the drivers from the manufacturer website, then press F6, install third party hard drive, then when it asks to insert the floppy disc, im assuming that the drivers will be installed? Looking at your manual, at the TOP of the Integrated Peripherals menu there should be a menu named Onboard PCI Controller, which the option I mentioned above is in.There is the option, I did enter into OnBoard PCI Controller, then pressed enter, all I see is Lan Controller, and AC'97 Audio which are both enabled, however no other options. Quote from: patio on May 24, 2013, 11:56:36 AM

So how do I emulate to the computer that its a floppy disc and not a regular cd. I found the drivers I need to install ( i think are right), then ill put it onto the CD and then load the drivers from the F6 option. Just run it... Quote from: KaoTic_Crisis on May 24, 2013, 12:06:48 PM

MSI's manual is probably for several different models then, as usual, and as usual they haven't bothered to differentiate between models which have certain options and those which don't. The option will be there somewhere - if the motherboard is currently in RAID mode, there is certainly a way to switch it back, but I can't see anything else in the manual relating to it.

Solve : Preparing for a new PC?

Answer»

My old HP with WinXP is still working great thanks in large part to the HELP I get here. I regularly USE Macrium to CREATE backup images on an external HD. Here is my question: When the time comes for a new PC, how do I get my documents transferred from old PC to new PC? I assume my new OS will be Win8. Will Win8 be able to recognize my WinXP backup image? I recently had to replace my internal HD. No problem (but many questions, lol) transferring my backup image to the new HD. But, in that case it was a backup image made on the same PC with the same motherboard and same OS. Thanks.Transferring the backup image onto the internal HDD will just give you the Windows XP INSTALLATION, you can't restore the image to Windows 8 and have all your programs and documents, if that's what you mean.
What you can do, is once you've installed Macrium on the new PC, is access the backup image and copy your documents and files across to the Windows 8 machine. Programs are not transferrable in this manner and will need to be installed again.

I hope this helps Quote

Programs are not transferable in this manner and will need to be installed again.
The is true. With limited exceptions.
Programs that do not REQUIRE installation can be copied. Almost all commercial, paid for, programs require installation. That is by design. It helps to reduce some of the blatant pirate duplication of commercial software.

The people that sell programs the copy everything also sell snake oil.

Yes, it does help. Thanks. I am not concerned with transferring any software, just files/docs.Then Calum's above advice is sound...
When you open Macrium and read the backup image it will open in an Explorer type window where you can move/copy all your files to your heart's content...

Solve : 4.36 GB movied does not fit on 7.99 GB USB drive?

Answer»

Yes, I formatted the USB flash drive with Windows XP.
Then it said the drive was a 7.99 GB, it was sold as a 8 GB flash.
Now I have a movie I downloaded and XP says it is 4.36 GB.
Wren I try to copy from may hard drive to the flash, it says there is not enough space. How can that be?

So, I think that maybe it ought to be NTFS rather than FAT32.
But, XP will not let me format the flash drive as NTFS.
So what do it do? Give up?
I have a Windows XP Pro SP3 system at home and never ran into this issue, and I use a 16GB thumb drive. When i get out of work and home in about 2 hrs I'll check on this on my system. Maybe it was formatted NTFS with my Win 7 system. Pretty SURE I have choice of NTFS or FAT32 on XP for thumb drives, but cant confirm from work on 1:18am dinner break. ....speaking of 1:18am, I just noticed that the minutes are way off on my post. Shows 10:38:40 and its 01:18:xx here on the east coast. Would have expected 10:18:40 or 11:18:40 depending on timezone of CH server.
4GB file limit with FAT32.

Use HP Formatting Tool to format to NTFS
http://download.cnet.com/HP-USB-Disk-Storage-Format-Tool/3000-2094_4-10974082.html

Or use HJSplit to split the movie into smaller files.
Looks like the tool that Carbon suggested is the way to go unless you have access to a Windows 7 system to format the thumb drive to NTFS. *Might be able to do this with Vista as well, but I don't own Vista to confirm. I had 1 copy of it and sold it dirt cheap to get rid of it, then later realized i should have kept it for support purposes... **Also might be able to format it NTFS with a Linux distro.

I took a 8GB thumb drive I bought cheap on black friday staples promo but haven't used yet out of package and plugged it into my older Windows XP Pro SP3 box and it only allows FAT32 formatting and doesn't offer NTFS just as you experienced. I guess I haven't noticed this issue yet because I don't have any files larger than 4GB to save to the thumb drive.

Just used my Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit computer to format my thumb drive to NTFS. This drive works no problems with XP Pro SP3. *I guess I am going to have to go through my small pile of thumb drives and convert all but the Bootable Linux drives to NTFS if they aren't NTFS already to avoid this problem at some point in the future. Thanks to Carbon Dudeoxide,
He solution is the best. Hp has a program for XP.
Yes, XP can read NTFS from a flash drive. Just doesn't let you create it.
If you have a video file that was ripped from a DVD, it can be over 4 GB unless you use compression. So once in awhile I do find some large video files. I put such on my 8 GB thumb drive to share with others in my household. That HP link is the way to go for anyone else that wants to do it from the XP machine.
Problem solved!
There's a theory that flash drives formatted NTFS last less long because the file format does 3 times as many read/writes...just so you know.
I don't put much credence into it however. Quote

hmm... never heard of this, especially the 3x more R/W. Just out of curiosity I am going to try a transfer of a file between FAT32 and NTFS to see if NTFS lags 3x in relation to FAT32. It was my assumption that NTFS was mainly for security/ownership of data and larger file/partition support. I have a 1GB patch file for a game that comes to mind as a good test. Will be interesting to stop watch it and see what DIFFERENCE there is if any noticable difference. I expected the transfer to be almost equal. In another 6 hrs when I get off of work, I will give this a test and report back with my findings.NTFS is a journalled FS so it will have more writes.

Though I doubt it makes a difference in the grand scheme. By the time it would matter, you've probably already replaced it anyway. I had a 256MB Flash Drive last around 7 years from heavy everyday use (as in, completely rewrite everything stored on it). On the other hand, NTFS does have methods that can actually make it take fewer reads and writes to read/store data, so I imagine it would even out anyway.

As for speed, NTFS is almost always faster, but it depends on the operation. With FAT/FAT32, if a program tries to find a file that doesn't exist, the FS DRIVER has to look through all the file entries in that directory to confirm it, whereas NTFS uses a Binary Tree structure that makes that search far quicker. This can be prevalent if you often search for files in directories with a lot of files.

NTFS is faster if file data is fragmented, or if the files are small. It's about equal for large files, and of course files >4GB have no comparator for FAT32 which cannot have files that large. For reference:
Quote
exFAT
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table) is a Microsoft file system optimized for flash drives.[3] It is proprietary and patent-pending.[1] It is supported in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 with update KB955704,[2] Windows Embedded CE 6.0, Windows Vista with Service Pack 1,[4] Windows Server 2008,[5] Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 R2 (except Windows Server 2008 Server Core), MAC OS X Snow Leopard starting from 10.6.5,[6] Mac OS X Lion and OS X Mountain Lion.

exFAT can be used where the NTFS file system is not a feasible solution, due to data structure overhead, or where the file size limit of the standard FAT32 file system (that is, without FAT+ extension[7]) is unacceptable.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExFATAbout 4 years ago, I bought a replacement DVD player with a USB port and I bought an 8GB flash drive (not cheap at that time) so I could transfer material from the PC to watch on the TV. Immediately I started saving money because I wasn't burning disks. I formatted the flash drive with NTFS. That drive has been in daily use ever since and is showing no sign of failure. If it does, 8 GB is pretty much entry level size nowadays. That's the moral of this tale. (By the time they wear out you won't care.) Anyhow, now I have a home network, a NAS with DLNA and a TV likewise so goodbye PHYSICAL media. (Another moral)

Solve : Windows 98 compatiblity with windows xp?

Answer»

I am thinking of purchasing a new computer with windows xp. Will my floppies that were created with Word 97, and windows 98 work with the new computer.
Yes.

You SEEM to be a bit undereducated on Operating Systems. Read this article if you want to learn more:
How Operating Systems WorkHave you considered this>http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_9x.htmI don't want to install windows 98, I want to know if my files stored on floppies CREATED by windows 98 will be compatible with windows xp? I have heard that there could be problems...If this is the case, do you know what they are.no problems winxp will read any m$oft disks..The floppies will work, but if you don't have MSWord installed, the only application that will read them is WordPad (which comes with WinXP). If your new computer has WordPerfect, you will have to translate the Word97 files to RTF files on the OLD computer. Then you can OPEN them in WordPerfect and SAVE AS WordPerfect files.

If you have no word processor you will have to PURCHASE MSWord (or something else), not sure if Word97 will work with WinXP.Thank you Computer Comando

Can you tell me how to convert to RTF files in order for Word Pefect to read Word 97 files.

In Word97, select File---Save As. At bottom of window, select from list, RTF (rich text format) and it will save file as yourfilename.rtf, yourfilename.doc will be untouched.

If you purchase Office 2003 or Word 2003, no conversion is necessary. Word will read the Word97 format and you can leave it in Word97 format or do a Save As in Word2k3 and select the top one *.doc and it will save as yourfilename.doc in Word2k format.
Thank You Computer Comando

This helps a great deal.

Solve : Application Manager pop-up?

Answer»

I have a problem with annoying pop-ups for which I’ve yet to find a solution. MAINLY it’s Application Manager, typified by the following three screens (see attachment AppMgr_screens.doc)

The first pop-up is now continually present and I’ve had to push it to one side of the screen to enable me to work with other applications which, surprisingly, do NOT seem to be affected in any way by this apparent Application Manager problem.

Because of the pointer to browserprotect.exe (second screen) I’ve tried closing that via Task Manager but it immediately recreates itself and appears repeatedly in the list of Processes. I’ve also tried sfc /scannow from the command line but the problem still remains. Whether scannow is an appropriate route I’m not sure – but I’m at a LOSS as to what is causing the problem. Incidentally, running DrWeb, Malwarebytes and/or a full SCAN with AVG Free 2013 also show no problem with viruses – although Malwarebytes DID discover (and remove) a Rootkit.0Access file. Despite this, the Application Manager popup is still present.

As a secondary (but similar) issue I’m also plagued (occasionally) with Word crashing when I try to close it, usually by clicking on the red X at the top right of the screen. It produces screens similar to the first above, copyable via the Clipboard to Wordpad and subsequently to Word as shown in the second attachment, WordCrash_screens.doc.

Running Detect and Repair (or even reinstalling Word) doesn’t cure the problem.

Are these two problems related? Whatever, I’d be grateful for any assistance in curing them.

It appears your system is infected with a rootkit. A rootkit is a powerful piece of malware, that allows hackers full control over your computer for means of sending attacks over the Internet, or using your computer to generate revenue.

Malware experts have recommended that we make it clear that with the system under control of a hacker, your computer might become impossible to clean 100%.

Many rootkits can hook into the Windows 32-bit kernel, and patch several APIs to hide new registry keys and files they install. They can disable your antivirus and security tools to prevent detection and removal. This type of exploit allows them to steal sensitive information like passwords, personal and financial data which is sent back to the hacker. To learn more about these types of infections, you can refer to:

What danger is presented by rootkits?
Rootkits and how to combat them
r00tkit Analysis: What Is A Rootkit

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable. Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. (If using a router, you need to reset it with a strong logon/password so the malware cannot gain control before connecting again.) Banking and credit card institutions should be notified to apprise them of your situation (possible security breach). To protect your information that may have been compromised, I recommend reading these references:
How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
What Should I Do If I've Become A Victim Of Identity Theft?
Identity Theft Victims Guide - What to do
It is dangerous and incorrect to assume the computer is secure even if the malware appears to have been removed. In some instances an infection may have caused so much damage to your system that it cannot
be completely cleaned or repaired so you can never be sure that you have completely removed a rootkit. The malware may leave so many remnants behind that security tools cannot find them. Tools that claim to be able to remove rootkits cannot guarantee that all traces of it will be removed. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with such a piece of malware, the best course of action would be a reformat and clean reinstall of the OS. This is something I don't like to recommend normally, but in most cases it is the best solution for your safety. Making this DECISION is based on what the computer is used for, and what information can be accessed from it. For more information, please read these references very carefully:
When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?
Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do?
Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do? Part II
Where to draw the line? When to recommend a format and reinstall?

Guides for format and reinstall:

how-to-reformat-and-reinstall-your-operating-system-the-easy-way

However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer's OS and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so. But please consider carefully before deciding against a reformat.
If you do make that decision, I will do my best to help you clean the computer of any infections, but you must understand that once a machine has been taken over by this type of malware, I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure even after disinfection or that the removal will be successful.

Please let me know what you have decided to do in your next POST. Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.Hi SuperDave

Thanks for that detailed (and VERY sobering) info on my problem. Although I don't look forward to the effort involved, I'm going to go ahead with a reformat and reinstall. It will be a marathon task. Fortunately, I have another PC with minimal applications which I can fall back on if I experience trouble.

Thanks again.

I know re-formatting sucks but it's something that faces everyone that owns a computer. I recently upgraded my computer and it took about 3 weeks to get to the way I want it.Which is why a solid backup routine with a good imaging app such as Acronis is a good idea...

Solve : Screen Corruption Then BSOD on reboot?

Answer» HELLO,

Let me first apologize for the long winded explanation but more info is better right? It's all kind of a mess and am trying to sort it all out.

When running certain programs (Borderlands and VLC so far) I have gotten a screen corruption when it looks like everything is bunching up on the top of the screen although its really just blurry and I cannot tell what program I am running. It seems to lock my computer and the only way for me to get out of it is to turn off the PSU. When I reboot, I usually get the Blue screen of death with code 0X0000007E followed by four others which change. I then reboot in safe mode, then reboot in normal mode and the system works fine until I try one of those programs listed above (usually Borderlands). My first thought was the video card but I am unsure and cannot shell out for another one if it is not necessary.

Why I am a wee bit concerned its something other than the video card is, about a week ago, all of a sudden, my DVD room drive stopped working (STILL powered tho, could open and close it) and it was not listed in windows My Computer. I checked the Bios and it was listed. I went into regedit and deleted UpperFilters and LowerFilters and rebooted. No luck. I figured it was the drive itself and purchase a new one (old one was IDE, new one SATA) and installed it. After installing this new drive, I started getting the corruption and BSOD.

Now, to make this worse, one day prior to the DVD ROM drive vanishing in Windows, I installed a few free programs recommended by Maximum PC and ran them. CPU-Z, Speccy, 7-zip, Teracopy, ccleaner, revo unistaller, slimdrivers, and file hippo. Specifically I am concerned about the cccleaner one which did a massive registry cleaning which I didn't back up prior to it (hit the NO button by accident before doing it, ugh). Also ran slim drivers and file hippo and updated LOADS of drivers and program updates (maybe 20 in all). But I didn't make note of all of them I updated. One was the GPU for Nvidia which i have since reverted back. Still no luck on the BSOD.

I also tried to do a system restore about 5 times using different dates but that's not working either. I made sure it was enabled and the service was running. Yep. Also tried it in safe mode. Confirmed administrator. Still no luck restoring ANY prior date (furthest I went back was one week, prior to the free program installs).

I have also run malwarebytes quick and full scan in safe mode and norton internet security suite scans, nothing came up. Checked video card temp - 64 degrees C.

Now I am just plain confused as to where to start or what to do. My concern is that if I buy a new video card, the problem will still be there.

Here are my specs:

Nothing overclocked
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40 GHZ (running 36 C)
Windows XP Pro SP3 32 bit
Gigabyte EP45-UD3L motherboard
2 GB of DDR2 RAM
Nvidia Geforce 9800 GTX 512 MB (running 63 C)
300 GB Seagate HD SATA (running at 34 C)
LG HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH24NS95
Antec 700W PSU (maybe 750W , not sure how to find out more specifics on this without pulling it out, trashed the box, but replaced it last year)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is that video card 63C at idle, or under load? Try doing a clean reinstall of the latest drivers.
Your graphics card is an Nvidia - click here to download the driver package, and save it - don't run it yet. Go to Computer, Uninstall or change a program, then remove anything that says Nvidia by it, and reboot the PC. Now open the driver package you downloaded, select Custom install rather than Express or default, and check the box that says clean install. Let the drivers finish installing, then reboot the PC again.

Just for future reference - I would avoid programs like slimdrivers in future as they often cause more problems than they solve.Calum, this was a head slapper for me. Doh! Your suggestion for a clean install did the trick. Thank you! I was concerned with so many potential variables and did a half-*** job with the video driver.

PS. That was 63 idle. Quote from: murph1969 on June 10, 2013, 05:58:33 PM

No problem. 63C idle is pretty high for that video card though - MIGHT be worth blowing any DUST out of the heatsink and generally giving it a good going over. They usually idle around 35-40C. Temperatures under load are the important thing though, so if possible check what kind of temperature it gets to when you're playing a game or doing something else intensive - if it stays under 95C or thereabouts, nothing to worry about.

Solve : Unresponsive Keyboard and mouse?

Answer»

Ok so it all started when I download uninstaller pro to remove a unwanted application. All worked fine until I allowed uninstaller pro to assist with my registry. It was supposed to update or something don't really remember what it said.(which I'm very upset with myself for not paying closer attention like I should) anyways when it prompted me to restart my PC I did and when It came back to the login in screen my keyboard was unresponsive. However my mouse was accessible so I try'ed for a system restore (another big mistake) after the restore FINISH and returned to the welcome screen both my mouse and keyboard were unresponsive. Oddly however my keyboard works just before windows login screen pops up, I have try'ed everything I can think of to fix this issue such as; unplugging both and plugging back in, restart after restart, changing both mouse and keyboard with new ones, and even tapping f8 to pull up restore still no luck I have no restore Cd so i can't even try that option Please if anyone can offer any advice to this issue It is very MUCH appreciated thank you.

My PC: 2005 Compaq Presario:OS Windows Xp Media center edition
Keyboard: Ps2 and USB model (ps2 is my everyday keyboard. USB is new model I purchased)
Mouse: USB and ps2 (other way around with mouse USB is my everyday mouse and ps2 mouse was purchased as replacement)1) NEVER use registry utilities. The don't fix anything, they only cause problems.

2) I suggest you do a repair install: Boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option, allowing XP to install on top of itself. After completion you'll need to go to Windows Update and download & install all updates (except for hardware & driver related updates, which should never be downloaded from Windows Update - only from the OEM websites). Here is a clear tutorial on how to perform a repair install: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/138-how-to-repair-windows-xp/

Thanks for the reply however I do not have a restore CD You can borrow an XP cd from someone as long as it is the same version (home/pro) and release (service pack). Alternatively, you can see if you system came with a restore option / partition that will take it back to factory shipped state.I have a Emachines restore cd but that says "Only for use with Emachines computer" in bold letters
Is there any other way besides the petition I have important documents and setting I can't lose by restarting. If all else fails, here's how to create a disk that will boot your computer and ENABLE you to recover your important files.

We are going to be using a Windows Recovery Environment to help disinfect the system so it may boot again.

Download the OTLPE Standard REATOGO Windows Recovery Environment.

  • Place a blank CD-R disc in to your CD burning drive.
  • Download OTLPEStd.exe and double-click on it to burn to a CD using an ISO Burner. One can be FOUND here.
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
  • Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start. Change the following settings
  • Change Drivers to Non-Microsoft
  • Press Run SCAN to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\_OTL\MovedFiles
  • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
  • No need to send me the log.
I'll give it a shot, and report the results laterwill this work on a mac? Cause that is the only computer that i have access to.Any other advise? Please, don't mean to sound inpatient but I need PC for work tomorrow! Quote from: Jrod661 on June 02, 2013, 02:36:29 PM

I don't know. I've never tried it on a Mac. The file will download and I assume that there must be an Image burner that will work on Mac. Once it's created, it should get your computer booted. The main obstacle will be burning the image to the disk. Remember, you will need an image burner. So when I downloaded I don't need to open anything right just try to burn it with a image burner correct? Quote from: Jrod661 on June 02, 2013, 04:17:22 PM

You dont neccessarily need "new" drivers...re-installing the available ones should work just fine...

Solve : i need help about scanning?

Answer»

how do i scan pictures on one computor and then send to mine. My brothers computor is hooked to the scanneron separate lines. I want to scan and send to mine? Not a computor GENIUS if that helps you!!! Please help me outAre your computers networked? You can transfer by floppy disk or CD depending on the size or email to the other computer if both have net access.we are on 2 different lines but have the same internet serviceSo why not just email them to each other.can you clarify for me as i have not done this much. After i scan a PHOTO , the scan will ask where do i want the scan to go and then i get a little confused , can you walk me thrun it the simplist way. do i send to images, picture or does it matter??? Then after that what do i do?? thankyou for all help!!!How about reading the manual?that is why i'm asking you, can't find manualSearch for it online, different SOFTWARE has different methods. Please excuse Raptor, he is, after all, only young.

When you've scanned your image you should have the option of saving it to your hard drive. I assume you also have some sort of imaging software such as Paint Shop Pro or something from the Adobe SUITE which will allow you to 'Aquire' an image from the scanner. After saving the image to your drive, mail it to the other computer.scan the image using the appropriate software and the use winzip...to compress the files and then send ;em or if networking enable file sharing...I know just about how you are feeling. You should be able to find step by step help from the PROGRAM itself after scanning the picture. Most have a HELP file and you can search for the information you need. Hope this helps.

Solve : Background Programs?

Which programs need to be running on Windows 98 as there seems to be quite a LOT on start up. And how do i stop the ones i dont need from opening up from the start

      Are you experiencing slow downs?

SCAN for Spyware, Trojan Horsses and Viruses. No slow downs it just seems like a lot of programs running, how do i check for spy warePlease Read This First - Viruses & Spyware

There are links to useful articles and programs there that will explain you what Spyware, how to look for it and how to remove it.

If you experience no problems and you have scanned for Viruses, Trojan Horses and Spyware but still find there to be too many progams, post the entries here.

MSBB WINSYNC
BARGINS MWSOEMON
WATCH WEBRATES
CALCHECK
MBFIVXOEIn answer to your question, the bare minimum that should be on the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Delete) are EXPLORER and SYSTRAY.

RNAAPP is a Windows file too, but it'll start up when it's needed. I just leave it to it's own devices and only close it if I'm installing something or if I need to do some troubleshooting. STIMON stands for Still Image MONITOR, and simply looks out for any activity in your scanner, and I think the ones beginning in 'Y' are to do with Yahoo!'s various services.

I don't know exactly what the rest are but some do look a BIT iffy - in particular BARGINS (sic) and WEBRATES. You did run the spyware scan, didn't you?

A boot floppy was a lot more functional back when operating systems used the FAT (File Allocation Table) or FAT32 file systems. Most Windows systems use the NTFS file system by default now. NTFS stands for NT File System. Don't worry, you don't need to know what that means, just that the files are much more difficult to get to with NTFS.NTFS = New Technology File System. Quote

Hello Everyone: I made a Start up Floppy but don;t know how to use it. When I put it in the pc all I see is A:\> What do I do next? I am using XP Home OEM Thanks, Tom.

What you need, if you don't have an XP CD, are six floppy diskettes and then download the appropriate file from the Microsoft XP Bootdiskette link below, depending on which Service Pack you have installed, and double-click on the file to make you a SET of SIX bootdiskettes.

Basically this will allow you to start either an installation of an XP CD, if your BIOS won't allow you to boot directly from an XP CD, or it will allow you to use the Recovery Console.

It is very important to know which service pack you are up to. You should be using SP2.

As you have an OEM install it is also important that you order the Free XP SP2 CD from Microsoft.

When you next have to recover from a crash and have to do a full re-install, it is best to install the basic XP Operating System (If your OEM software will allow you to) and then immediately add SP2 from the Free CD.

You can then run chkdsk & defrag and install the rest of your OEM software, if it is still up-to-date.

Some OEM machines have the Recovery Console installed to the hard-drive.

You might be able to use one of your OEM CDs, but if not then borrow an XP CD (You do NOT need the ProductKey!) put it in the CD-ROM drive, and, whilst on-line, type:

(CD-ROM drive letter):\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons , and press Enter.

Windows will contact the Microsoft Download centre and install the latest Recovery Console files to your hard-drive.

On the next re-boot, you'll see a 30 second count-down timer which allows you to choose between allowing Windows to boot normally or pressing the down arrow to allow the Recovery Console to load.

You can reduce the timer to 4 seconds in your Control Panel, System, Start-Up & Recovery, Settings. (Top timer) Leave the second timer at 30 seconds. You'll see why when you need to use the F8 key. It takes longer to read.

If you have to change your BIOS settings to allow you to boot from your OEM Master CDs I find it easier to download oldbios.exe from http://ebcd.pcministry.com (Downloads, bottom of page.) and double click on it to make a floppy bootdiskette.

What I do instead of altering the BIOS is to put the oldbios bootdiskette in the A: drive and the XP CD (and all manner of bootable CDs) into the CD-ROM drive.

The computer will then boot to the floppy drive and be re-directed to the CD-ROM drive and load the CD.

You can do this with an XP CD too, if you want to load the Recovery Console from the XP CD.

Loading the Recovery Console from the XP CD takes longer, which is why I prefer to install it to the hard drive.

You lost me on that one ...

Try the EBCD 060 Bootable CD and oldbios.exe from http://ebcd.pcministry.com

You'll need WinRAR to open the EBCD .RAR file to make an Emergency Boot Compact Disk from the .ISO file which EBCD 060 will make for you.

The beauty is that you can add your own keyboard and language settings, and update components.

Solve : problems with desktop shortcuts?

Answer»

Please help....

I can't reach any programs through shortcuts ANYMORE in windows xp. If you want to see a picture of what my desktop looks like, click http://tarasellsorlando.com/problem.jpg.

I don't know how to fix this problem. I've tried to "open FILE with..." but it does not fix all of the icons. The only way I can access my programs is by placing the actual file on the desktop or going through the c: drive.

It's getting really annoying. I would really appreciate any help! Thanks!

TaraScan for Trojan Horses, Spyware and Viruses.

Did this only happen to your shortcuts? When did your problem first begin?if the *censored* cant help reinstall xpFirstly, reinstallation is a very last resort. If you think the problem is not solvable, still avoid it until you have to. Trust me here.

Secondly, a screenshot almost never helps in any problematic situation. The exact error messages you get and any relevant logfiles are much handier.

That aside, I do BELIEVE there is a virus that does this sort of thing. Make sure you update it before you scan. Also do the rest of what Raptor suggests and scan for spyware etc. I've said this before and I'll say it again: If your house has 'roaches, it'll probably has rats too...I'm not sure if it's the dirty work of some virus or one of my roommates. I ran adaware, avg, and norton and came up with nothing.

There are no error messages when trying to click a shortcut. I think windows sees the shortcuts as actual files (i guess .lnk files) and tries to open them unsuccessfully.

I can however right click, choose "open with" and select the actual program i want from the shortcut from a list. For example, right clicking on the AIM shortcut and selecting AOL instant messenger from the program list opens it. It does not change the desktop shortcut however, and I have to do this every time I want to open that or any program.Your problem is called: Lost File Associations

Solve : Using installed hard disk in another system?

Answer»

I have a fully installed hard disk with xp professional. This runs in most systems. But in a Asus board core duo system blue screen appears and doesn't start even in safe mode. Is it necessary to make fresh installation in every system? It was not so earlier. Pl. clear this point. How to install fresh xp from a DVD with all programmes and software unaffected in at least C drive? It's often the case that you can't move a hard drive from one machine to another without affecting the Windows installed. Two things to check - first, check the SATA mode on the Asus board, and make sure it's set to IDE, not AHCI. Secondly, if you can boot the Windows install on another machine, go to device manager and uninstall the IDE or SATA controllers, then shut it down, then try booting the disk in the Asus PC. If that doesn't WORK, you will need to reinstall Windows, which will wipe your programs and data.
One possible option is to try a repair install of Windows on that disk - here's a great link for info on that http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmDear Calum,

Thank you. It was an informative and quick reply. I shall try the option. The link was also useful.
But as you know the OS these days manage the whole thing unlike those good old days DOS. Hence this problem of losing all meticulous installation of software and the drivers. Can't people make a water tight compartment of dividing these two and link different ones as and when required. For example, keep all the basic booting files in an inbuilt pendrive as boot drive and over and above hard disks for programmes etc.? Wild dreams!???

Anyhow, thank you.No problem, hope it helps. It would be nice to have programs and the OS itself separate, but I don't know if that will EVER happen mainly because there's not that much call for it and I can imagine it'd take a lot of work. Quote from: Calum on May 24, 2013, 03:36:12 AM

There is reason.
Aurally it is easier. Yes, esay to install a windows program without the "convoluted tubule" syndrome. (Yeah, I kinda' made that up.)

Such easy to install programs are called 'portable windows programs'*, meaning that can run off a USB stick and be transported from one PC to another.
Apparently it is hard to force people to register such programs.

* Or, portable Applications.
http://portableapps.com/ (Free stuff)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_application
When I said "it'd take a lot of work" I meant along the lines of rewriting every application that has ever been made to not use the registry or any folders for settings and files outside of its own directory, and then erasing all trace of previous versions that weren't portable.
Portable apps are one solution, but that doesn't work for everything. Firefox settings and bookmarks can be easily transferred whether it's the portable version or not - more complex and indeed more important software packages aren't always so easy. Quote from: Calum on June 18, 2013, 03:50:01 AM

I will not disagree with you. However, could you be more specific? Personally, The program I use most often is a Photo and graphics editor that has to be installed. Nevertheless, they claim that some portable Aps are as good, I I have not tried them all. Here is a very long list:
http://portableapps.com/apps
Portable App Directory
Quote
Over 300 Apps: All 100% Free, Legal and Portable
all installed for you and automatically updated in the PortableApps.com PLATFORM
Even if I could try four PortAps a week, I could not do 300 in a year!
A lot pof work!!!

It shroud be MENTIONED, it maybe the reason vendors stay away from portability is the issue of copyright INFRINGEMENT.

However, there is a hardware solution to that. Yet the vendors, so far, have not used it. I think it could be a great idea. A special supplication USB device that allows you to own a portable license on a USB stick. The fist time you use it you have the option to activate it within 10 days. Once activated, your personal info is sent to the vendor and keep on file. Nobody can make working copies of your USB device, but you can take it anywhere and run it on any windows OS made in the past ten years. It could be priced way below other productivity suites and still make a lot of money for the developer. The actual hardware is not very expensive.
Just a thought...

Solve : Windows xl reinstall?

Answer»

I have been asked to look at a friends dell 910
He tried to free up some space and theft he pc would not boot.
He added the windows xl disk he had and tried a fresh install and it came up with windows setup BLUE screen.
If you select install windows xp press enter.
It now says unpartitioned space 39mb
C: partition 1 7286mb 535mb free
It will only ALLOW me to create a 31mb partition and that's not enough space for the xp
It won't let me delete c: as it contains temporary setup files .
All original disks with an external cd rom rw

How can I delete the c : and start again?
Any help would be appreciated, there is no f11 and it only goes upto f10

Many thanksYou will want to delete the original C: partition, as long as no important data remains on the HARD drive, and create a new C: partition using all space. This is an option in the blue installation menu.

8GB hard drive is very tight for a Windows XP install as for if you have 512MB RAM, 1.5GB of the hard drive is consumed in swap space leaving 6.5GB free for the OS to reside. Windows XP Pro SP2 installs clean consuming around 3GB of hard drive the last time I installed it to a small hard drive which was 6.4GB and system with 256MB RAM. I ran into issues quickly when I had very little space left to take the many security updates and software.

If you can get a 20GB hard drive or larger to use on this computer you would get better performance as well as not paint yourself into a corner with running out of space to install programs and personal data. Larger drives perform better since they do not have to sweep large areas of the drive to acquire the data to read/write as well as some of them are higher RPMs such as an upgrade from 5400 RPM drive to 7200 RPM drive etc. Performance on this 8Gb drive will be very laggy at boot up and running programs even if you have lots of RAM because the OS will have to load off of at least 33% of the space.Thank you for your reply.
In the blue menu it gives the option bt won't delete the c file because it contains setup information.

It is a friends pc so they probably won't want to upgrade as they only use it for the web.

I have the original disks

Any other ideas?

Many THANKS

Solve : Unsuccessful startup caused by operations on FBWF-enabled system?

Answer»

I did some setting of FBWF after enabling it. Then, I restarted the Windows and did some DELETION and copying at some FBWF-protected and write-through folders. After I restarted the system, I got SCREEN of unsuccessful startup as attached file. How come. The setting I did to the system is:
   fbwfmgr /enable
   fbwfmgr /addvolume C:
   fbwfmgr /addexclusion c: %WTHRU_DIR%
   fbwfmgr /addexclusion c: %WORK_DIR_P%

What I did to the files/folders at each restarting cycle is as follows:
      del /s /f /q %WTHRU_DIR%
      call :isempty %WTHRU_DIR%
      if !errorlevel! neq 0 (
         echo "write-through" deleted failed
            echo write-through delete fail >> %LOGFILE%
         GOTO :failure_exit
      )
      del /s /f /q %WPROT_DIR%
      call :isempty %WPROT_DIR%
      if !errorlevel! neq 0 (
         echo "write-protected" deleted failed
            echo write-protect delete fail >> %LOGFILE%
         goto :failure_exit
      )
      call :cpdir %REF_DIR% %WTHRU_DIR%
      call :cmpdir %REF_DIR% %WTHRU_DIR%
      if !errorlevel! neq 0 (
         echo "write-through" copy failed
            echo write-through copy fail >> %LOGFILE%
         goto :failure_exit
      )

Is it normal to have such successful startup screen after such operations to FBWF-enabled system?

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]An FAE of Microsoft's agent gave me the answer and it's approved by me:
The file bootstat.dat in \Windows folder was set protected, but it must be updated to record the last boot state. When it can't be updated for any reason, it causes abnormal startup screen. This was stated in Microsoft web: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa940810%28v=winembedded.5%29.aspx

Solve : Can no longer access my external hardrive?

Answer»

Problem. I have read the FAQ forum but cannot solve the problem.
I have an Iomega 1.3 TB external hardrive which is full of important files . All was working well until I ran CCLEANER and then ran analyse, folled by Cleaner. After that the drive was only listed in My computer as Local Drive J. But could not be accessed.
I REBOOTED the PC but to no avail. I also have a small palmtop computer but it cannot see it either.
I have run disk management and the drive is recognised as letter J but not by its NAME Iomega. Its status is "Healthy"
In My computer ifyou try to access it. The hour glass comes on and the machine seems to jam up.
In disk managment the drive is listed as having 100% free. I am praying it hasnt somehow been wiped clean.
I would be greatful for any help.
Many thanks,
TonyP

My computer is running windows XP professional SP3, intel pentium D cpu 2.8GHz, 1.0 GB RAM, RADEON X600 series
Also running Malwarebytes and spybot search and destroy
Sounds like you interrupted the clean process and the file table is corrupt...
HOOK it back up to the desktop PC and this time be patient.I am sorry but this hasnt helped.
The drive is still assigned as a Local drive J in both "My computer" and Disk Management.
The PC has asked to format the disk. I do not want to erase the vast amount of USEFUL material on it.
Is there anything else I can try?
TonyPHi
Try the drive connected and run some recovery software on it like EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard it's not free but the evaluation copy will show if the files are still there.
Remember do not write anything to the drive you are recovering. if you want a free file recovery system use recuva made my priform i belive this is the best free recovery soft ware, that should be able to help you get tyour files back, what options do you have enabled in Ccleaner?

computer works FINE until I hook up to the internet then it slows down. The longer I am on the internet--the slower it works. We had an invasion of pop ups that hit the computer when we were gone. Nothing has been the same since. We managed to get the ads off but everything is still SLOW. Could this be SPYWARE? I installed a registry CLEANER but it hasn't helped the problem. Could you advise? Thanks, Chattachatta......Scan your pc with something like Ad-Aware SE
and be certain your anti-virus is functional and has all the latest updates ......

Then either reinstall the Mcafee firewall or configure your Internet Settings.

You donot require to install Windows ME first. Skip INSTALLING ME and use the Windows XP upgrade CD. It will PROMPT you to use the ME disk for authorization only. So,fi I erase everything and then put in the XP disk, it'll install XP, and the ME disk will be for authorization only? In other words, I will not have to INSTALL ME right?
You are correct.

is your winme an oem disk....or did your pc come with just the recovery DISKS...have you tried to repair ie....back up info on a previous answer>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q316522

Solve : DEP?

Answer»

Who of you make use of DEP (Hardware or software-wise)

(Right click My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced tab -> PERFORMANCE -> (DEP) tab.)

Must be an XP thing, it's not in Win98.

I use the swap file settings in the Performance tab, set to min 2.5 times RAM and max to 4 times RAM (or more), and I move the swap file to somewhere other than the boot partition. I turn the graphics acceleration down to prevent a BBS I'm on (GAIA...) from crashing the machine all the time. I do a bunch of other minor tweaks. You are correct, it is a Windows XP feature. I believe it was introduced with SP2. Also, AMD is the only ONE to have that feature hardware wise.

That BBS tends to cause SPORADIC spontaneous restarts while posting replies if the graphics accelerator is on. It's probably some weird IE-specific code glitch, I figure... Quote

Something new in SP2. There's a help-link: How does it work? on the DEP window. Just another hidden security feature, sure to be compromised by hackers.

I don't understand this: "...If your processor does not support hardware-based DEP, it's a good idea to upgrade to a processor that offers execution protection features." Since when does MS promote AMD? I thought they were solidly behind Intel.
AMD's getting CHEAPER. Quote

Data Execution Prevention? Yes I do. If you want to know more just open the Help & Support and type DEP.

XP will take up to 4 x 1024Mb of RAM for those struggling with '98/MEs and 512Mb. (Usually 1024Mb is ADEQUATE.)

But XP has much more in the way of system resources. Especially XP 64-Bit.

I donot look to know more, I was merely curious.

Solve : Incorrect path specified?

Answer»

Hi. I deleted a file from my computer (bad!) and the whole system crashed. (worse!) So I had to reformat stuff (and I didn't have back ups--worse still). So now, the few files I did have on a CD-R DISK that I've loaded back onto the computer won't delete.

For example, something that I put on my desktop that I want to get rid of... I cannot drag and drop into the Recycle bin. It says something about "Cannot delete: incorrect PATH specified. Make sure you have the correct path".

I think I understand what this means, but I have NO idea how to FIX it.

Advice and fix it tips welcome.
Thank you.First ATTEMPT to find the item in Windows Explorer. You may need to clear Read-only, System, or Hidden attributes before deleting. If it refuses to delete, record the path carefully.

Next, try navigating to that path location in DOS (Win9x or with a FAT32-based NT system and a Win98SE EBD floppy) or in CMD box (WinNT without Win98SE EBD or with NTFS) and use ATTRIB -R -H -S file.typ, then DEL file.typ.

If the item is in a subdirectory you don't want to keep, you can try the DELTREE command with that folder/directory, if you are using FAT32.

Solve : Changing Drives?

Answer»

I bought a laptop from PCWorld a while back and the hd is split into two as drives C and D. Therefore the CD drive is drive E.

The software that came installed with the computer for burning CDs will only accept the CD drive as being drive D. I've tried installing another software package and that's doing the same. It seems the free versions won't let you change this.

It seems daft to me that PCWorld install software that can't be used because of the way they've set up the machine but done is done. What I need to know is how I can change this so that I only have one HD drive (why would I need 2?) and the CD drive becomes D. This is the way my PCs have always been before.

Thanks

~ Sharon J
If you wish to remove partitions you will require to delete them using either Fdisk or the Windows XP CD. Either ways will require you to format your Hard Disk Drive after doing so.So much for clever PCWorld then, eh? Software that can't be used unless I format my HD? What a joke!

Thanks anyway but without a backup system, I can't possibly format my HD and I can't even backup to CD because of the PROBLEM with the drives. Blast!!

The joke is the burning software. It should make no difference what drive letter the CD is. My CD's are G & H.

Partitions are very handy. Keep all your files and data on D; if you ever have to reinstall OS, it only affects C, not D.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q223188/What's even worse is that the second HD partition is probably your Factory Install Restore info. The CDROM they gave you as a 'recovery disk' is just a bootup sequence that accesses the OS, drivers, and applications on the second HD partition.

If you're on Windows NT4, Windows XP, or Windows 2k, you should be able to go into Disk Administration and re-assign the drive letter labels so the CDRW becomes D: and the second HD partition becomes E:. Then you WANT to use WHATEVER utility they gave (if they bothered to give you one) to copy the Restore partition to CD, before it gets bit by a virus...

Solve : Slow Mouse?

Answer»

???When I use the mouse it's taking forever to get it positioned to do anything. I'll move the mouse but whats on the screen drags. This is the first time i've had this problem.Scan for Viruses, Trojan Horses and spyware.start controll panel mose and chage the speed forget reper his fix for everything is scan for bugsIf it is a spontaneous change in the system response, a bug check would be part of my response too.

Press CTRL, ALT, DEL to bring up the task list, and see if anything UNWELCOME is there slowing the machine. If so, KILL it. Do not kill automatic updates or scans of security programs or other legitimate background tasks.

Make sure other users of the PC haven't CHANGED the properties of the mouse on you, there is a slider that AFFECTS the device response speed and double click DELAY sensitivity in the Mouse applet in Control Panel.
