Solve : Icons changing colors?

Answer»

My icons are changing colors and I don't know why! also my floppy drive trys to read EVERY 4 mins. Windows explorer has been crashing recently and so has every other program.  I used to get a bunch of error messages when I booted up each time but I have fixed some of those.  my main concern is why have my icons started changing to random colors!?Scan for virus/worm attack using your updated anti-virus prog/Spybot S&D/CWShredder etc...

Good luck

Scan for Viruses, Trojan Horses and Spyware.yeah I have done that a lot with all of my virus/adaware/SpyBot THINGS.  But it is still happening.  Also windows explorer keeps crashing and the microsoft error report says it is because of a temp file.  and even though I have deleted all my temp FILES, every time I turn my computer back on it happens again!  :-/I don't have a clue....... try reinstalling windows.... that might help the problem....

BTW, there is something about your background that CREEPS ME OUT, lolwhen you scan for trojans etc...did you disable the system restore...program...system spec...maybe your graphics card is GETTING overheated... type dxdiag in the run BOX...it may tell you more... Quote

Solve : This is a simple problem?

Answer»

I don't know what happened, but someone messed around with my PC.

I now have a blue bar about 1/5 of the screen wide on the left HAND side.  My icons have been pushed over to the right.

The bar has on it Folder Tasks   Other Places   and Details with options under each.

How can I get rid of it?

Windows XP sp3

ThanksDrag the bar. It will snap in place. The bar doesn't drag.  I do have a task bar as well.  The bar on the left side is 1/5 as wide as the screen.Right click on the taskbar, go onto Toolbars, and untick whatever is there.  It sounds as if someone accidentally dragged a folder there and Windows has made a toolbar for it.Did that.  Nothing is ticked.  This side bar also displays whatever PROGRAM I execute.  Maybe that will help in deciding exactly just what it is.bullwinkle, you have to drag it.
Pull hard, if it slips, get a better grip.
Make sure you have a sharp mouse pointer. Try jabbing in in different places. Yank on it with the mouse pointer. Keep trying. It took me almost a day to figure how to grasp it. You just have to keep at nit until is pops of the edge. As mentioned earlier, the task bar  must be unlocked.Could you provide a screenshot? It might help determine what it is.BC, this is what happens to me when mine tanbark wanders off.

What is a tanbark? I swear to you - if you don't start SPELL checking I'm going to DELETE your posts.I am familiar with clicking and dragging this to the taskbar but there is no response.  And the task bar is unlocked.

I would be happy to give you a screenshot if you tell me how to do it.How to post screenshots or images

Solve : new hd - using an image to bring up?

Answer»

Hi, Yes I know that this might be unorthodox but I am trying it anyway - why not? My hd was replaced, so instead of using the xp setup cd (actually I only have a hp recovery cd no ms xp setup cd)

Anyway I have a saved image of my xp os with all the customized DESKTOP and applications on it.

I did a restore using Image for Dos after creating a partition and formating it with diskpart and format.

Now it says when I boot "reboot and select proper boot device"

I can get past this with the xp boot diskette I got from microsoft and the system boots fine.

I know that since I did not do the setup with the new hd that there is no MBR to point to the boot partition.

Microsoft has no hits when I search with the indications.

Any hints? I know this can be done somehow.

thanks for the help!I did a FIXMBR and it did the same thing.
I did a fixboot and the same thing.
One of ms messages said to check if the partition was active, it was not so I changed it and it works!

thanks for the INSPIRATION of this site!

hello i dont even know where to begin i have been fighting with my PC for going on 2 weeks i finnally got xp back on it
i love xp i never had any problems until recently i was in the middle of playing clancys splinter cell when my system
crashed after it crashed i could not get it to restart nothing i tried worked the biggest problem is that
my originl xp pro operating system disk got damaged some how i never knew that a disk could become corrupted wich i
still dont get makes no sense at all anyway my xp disk would not go into setup it would get as far as
checking for system files right after the f8 license agreement then it would just stop with a f3 quit setup option
drive me crazy well the only other os disk i have is win98 so what i eventually got to work was using a xp iso
with my cd KEY from with in win98 wich took me 4 days to figure out how to do it i was at my wits end by the time
i got it to work what i had to end up doing was creating a 2 partitions on my hard drive 1 primary and 1 extended
logical partition but every time i got win98 on the c: drive i would only have 10gb of space yet d: would have
all the rest of my 80gb hard drive space so what i ended up doing was installing win98 on the d: drive i put all
the system files on the second partition so i could have more disk space only the boot files are on the c: drive
or FIRST partion now my question is is it safe for me to convert from fat32 to ntfs if this is the way my system
is setup

let me break it down so i am clear
i have 1 80gb hard drive i put 2 partions on it
c:= 1st partion
d:= 2nd partion
i installed win 98 but not on c:
i installed win 98 on the d: partiton {second partion}
i then upgraded to xp
so now all my xp system files programs everything is on the d: drive
so can i convert these 2 partitions from fat32 to ntsf safely and not
screw it all up

here are my system specifications

Motherboard = ASUS a8n-sli deluxe

well that about it so can i or better yet should i convert the file system
from fat32 to ntfs cause i have no clue what i am doing

No.  Win98 does not support (understand) NTFS.  If you convert Win98 partition to NTFS, Win98 won't boot. Quote from: patio on June 27, 2013, 06:38:20 AM

You don't have to convert WinXP from FAT32 to NTFS.  You can do it if you want to.  If you really don't know what you're doing, why not just leave all as is?
After reading this several times, it appears you still have Win98 on 1st partition & WinXP on 2nd partition, but you only use WinXP & you want to delete the 1st partition.  The boot info for WinXP is still on 1st partition, so this is not a simple matter.  Why didn't you just upgrade Win98 on "C"? i imagine it also provided an error message anyway it's too late to get that now i guess but anyway discs cant get corrupted but if they are damaged then the setup wont be able to read the disc and anyway that will cause problems.

sounds like some of this could be a problem related to a bug in windows 98s fdisk utility which can't see larger hard drives i forget the specific issue or how it manifests itself but anyway thats one of the things that could lead to this issue but anyway you sorta solved that so it's probably not a concern

With regards to FAT32-NTFS conversion, Computer Commando speaks the truth. From the sounds of it you have Windows XP on the second partition, and the boot files on the first partition; both of them will have been upgraded through the XP installation process. So you could convert the file system to NTFS, though there isn't really any reason for you to do so.

Solve : XP System Restore Power Problem?

Answer»

OK, this is probably going to sound kinda bizzare, but here goes.

A FRIEND of mine, using Microsoft Windows XP (I'm not sure if it was Home or Pro EDITION), was doing a system restore to a PREVIOUS point.  He was trying to see if something that he had deleted had not been deleted.

The restore back went perfectly fine.  The file he was looking for wasn't there, so he figured he would just restore back to the current day.  He was in the middle of the whole thing when he decided that he would rather do it later.  Here comes the bizzare part.

He turned off the computer, in the middle of the restore.  Not a good thing, I agree with you on that, especially since all his laptop does now is boot to the XP loading screen and then reboot (That is what he told me over the phone).

I haven't gotten a chance to do any thing with it yet, since it happened around 9 o'clock this morning and I've been at work all day, so I thought I'd ask if anyone else has encountered this and, if so, if they have any advice.  He's not worried about losing any information, he said that he's got a disk with all of his important stuff on it, so that's good, so if it comes down to formatting and reinstalling XP, that's what it'll have to be.

Thanks in advance.

Timre-boot pc and keep tapping the f8 and chose the last good CONFIG..http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/UK/welcome.htmYeah, safe mode was my first plan of action.  Thanks though.  Any other advice is welcome!

Solve : Windows gives up at 60%?

Answer»

Hello

I have advised a friend of mine to boot up Windows from the CD - changing the BIOS ORDER. It occurred to me from what she told me over the PHONE that Windows was corrupt, and reinstallation was the best remedy I could think of. She is the coordinator of a charity that attempts to teach basic computer skills to the elderly. I will be visiting next week only, so if anyone does reply here, please bear in MIND that it will be a few days before I can get back with any firm results.

She has managed to change the BIOS order with the Windows XP CD in the tray, and the PC has attempted to copy the new Windows files onto the hard drive. For some reason, it has stopped at 60%.

What might be causing this, please - corrupt hard drive? - and what is the best solution I can try when I visit next week?

Thanks.

High1First of all, reinstalling Windows should be the LAST option, not the first.

Second, I don't know if she's attempting a repair install or a clean install. If the latter, she should choose the option to format before installing. WITHOUT knowing more about the specific situation, it's hard to diagnose further.Hello Allan

I'm afraid I don't know much more than you at this stage. She told me that when she first turned on the PC she got the 'blue SCREEN' so inserted the Windows installation CD in the CD drive and again got the blue screen

It was at that point that I thought a clean install would be necessary. As far as I know there is nothing on the PC and it's quite old.

After she has booted from the CD in it's drive, would it be best then to choose 'format' and not install? How would she (or I) know that the culprit, so to speak, is not the hard drive itself?

Thanks again.

High1Hard Drive Diagnostics:
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

Make sure you select the tool which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), to make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba drives, see here: http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=ServicesSupport/FujitsuDrivesUSandCanada/SoftwareUtilities#diagnostic

As for installation, as long as there's nothing worth saving on the drive then yes, she should format as part of the installation routine. Here are all the steps - you may or may not wish to delete and recreate the system partition: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348Wow!

Thank you for your comprehensive explanation and links.

I will definitely use them when I get to the centre and I'll post back to let you know how things went.

Much appreciated, Allan.

High1You're very welcome.

Solve : Search needs to be... found??

Answer»

Hey

This is the search window I'm presented with (start > Search):

ANYONE KNOW of a fix please?

Using XP Pro SP3. I don't have an XP SP3 disk to use sfc/scannow and am unable to create a slipstream XP3 disk because I only have an OEM XP disk (not that I'd expect sfc/scannow to fix it anyway!).

I would also like to fix this (just because it's broken) and not use an alternative program.

Thanks very much I believe this should fix it. It wasn't that (couldn't find "Change Preferences" in #1) but you did POINT me in the right direction!

Within 'View' > 'Explorer Bar' menu, 'Folders' was unchecked. I've never EVEN looked at the menu options within search before -let alone uncheck anything- so that's what's thrown me off.

Thanks a LOT Dave!

Solve : Greyed Out Password Policy?

Answer»

An old Windows XP laptop has been retired (actually the password had been lost and no one cared about it anymore). After recovering the password I deleted the old domain name and ESTABLISHED the computer on a home group. When I tried deleting the password I recieved a message about password policies not allowing passwords that do not meet a certain standard.

I thought no problem, I'll just change the policies... They are greyed out and locked on the only admin account.

So any ideas as to how to get round this? I did some googling but no solutions for XP:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/muaddib/archive/2006/11/04/unlocking-a-local-security-policy-on-a-computer.aspx

If the computer still had access the to the original server it wouldn't be a huge problem. Hassle but not impossible.Oh ye of little faith.... I've just had an idea of how to get around the problem by poking a hole in it (I've not had the time to format the laptop yet). Is it possible to access the registry files externally, alter them (if necessary delete the problem entries) & allow the Windows REPAIR CD to fix them?

Special enfaces on possible not if it's easy. You could install a Linux OS on it. Doing all that stuff with the registry would certainly not be any easier than just reinstalling windows. There's other reasons why you'd want to reinstall Windows as well.

For one, doing so removes any dangerous software present on the computer. Any viruses, malware, etc. will be removed. Two, you don't have to worry about problems like these happening again, at least none that you can't fix. Three, by doing a clean install of windows, you avoid the terrible "windowsitis" that plagues older computers and causes them to run slowly. And four, you remove all the useless files on the laptop without having to clean up the mess left by the last user yourself.

Just do it the clean WAY, instead of getting all SLOPPY with the registry etc. Messing with the registry can bust your OS up anyway.

Solve : Continuosly getting corrupt files?

Answer»

I just bought a Syntax Mobo.  I've gotten it up and running with Windows 2000 Pro but after a bit the PC will just reboot with no errors or anything.  When back in Windows I'll GET the Blue Screen and recently I got a ***STOP PFN_LIST_(something) is corrupt.  Sometimes I'll get a popup that c: is corrupt.  Norton System Works doesn't find any VIRUS', SpySweeper found 8 items but quarantined them.  I'm still have this problems.  Could the CMOS be causing the corruptions?  I'm thinking of flashing the BIOS but not real confident that this would fix the problem.  I've even swapped out the 80 GIG HDD for a 40 gig HDD that was WORKING in another PC.  If it is some unfound virus that is on the machine could it be in the BIOS??  Is there a way to start from scratch again?  Also, is there anyone who could point me in a good direction to figure out the proper CMOS settings that should be set up.  I've got the manual and thought I followed those settings.  Any advice anyone could give would be greatly appreciated.  Have you loaded the BIOS/setup default values?

Have you formatted the HDD's properly before installing Windows 2000?

I left the windows 2000 loader do the format of the drive.  Yes, I did load the default values for the Mobo also.  I think the option Failsafe settings or something like that. How to fix a general protection fault

Solve : Strange Internet Shortcuts behaviour glitch?

Answer»

Windows XP Home, Service Pack 3, Dell Latitude D830

I’m posting this account in spite of the problem apparently going away spontaneously.  Maybe someone else has noticed something similar.

I keep a lot of Internet SHORTCUTS in VARIOUS folders on my hard drive.  My preferred browser is Google Chrome and up until this morning all my Internet Shortcuts would open in Chrome when I double clicked them.  This is the behaviour I want.

This morning when I started the laptop, I noticed that the icons on all my Internet Shortcuts had CHANGED to the Firefox icon and they opened in Firefox when I double clicked them.  This is not the behaviour I want.

I also noticed that something seemed to be blocking Chrome from being the default browser.  When I started Google Chrome manually (by clicking its program shortcut) it prompted me with “Google Chrome isn’t your default browser.”.  I clicked “Set as default” but this seemed to have no effect because if I closed and reopened Chrome I again got the prompt.  Also Chome’s “Settings” PAGE said it is not the default.

So I tried a reboot after having one more go at setting Chrome as the default browser.  Low and behold this seems to have restored all the Internet Shortcuts and I can confirm Chrome is now the default.  Anyone any idea what could have caused this glitch?

Keith
If someone else uses the PC they may have inadvertantly set FireFox to default...
Other than that i can't think of how it would happen on it's own.Nobody else uses it, and I didn’t do anything Firefox related yesterday.  It’s a mystery.Yes...it is.

Solve : Read only problems?

Answer»

Hey, I've been having huge issues for at least 4 days now with the read only feature, Spent way over 24 man hours trying to sort it out just to play a GAME. Problem is I can't untick it from a game and I can't play the game till I have done so.

Firstly I went through everything I could think of personally to fix the issue and it had no effect, So I ended up reformating my computer and then reinstalling it, Had no effect so I done it again ^^ yet again had no effect.

So I researched into it and done BASICALLY everything suggested of me. stuff like command promt with commands like ( attrib -r +s "C:\Documents and Settings\Worsbeef\My Documents\Downloads\Wow") Which should be the exact command had no effect.

I then got recommended to take ownership of it which I have done so through secruity etc etc but yet again its having 0 effect, I'm completely out of IDEAS and seriously loosing the will, 24 hours+ just to remove a read only check is getting silly.

My version of windows xp is; Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3.

I appriciate the help and advice. Are you logged on as ADMIN ? ?Yeah, I'm the only acc there is.Where did you get this game from ? ?A TRUSTED private server, It never had a problem for like a year from when I was playing it before hand, all of a sudden I got heavy fps issues in game, Came out and it was marked read only ^^ ever since I haven't been able to reopen it and went through everything I previously stated. On that note...i'm done.Ok thanks anyway

Solve : Dragging Computer Poor performance?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 which is running Win XP SP3, at 2.4Ghz with 2.0GB ram.
It has been progressively SLOWING down and struggling to operate, taking longer to boot and everything else. I ran out of HD space on my original HD so I cloned and installed a new, larger HD with no improvement. Is this unit just getting tired from all of the constant windows updates both to the system and to the antivirus? or is there some conflict between software that I can ascertain? I get 100% cpu doing many operations.... Opening firefox 2-3 minutes from click, searching for files in large directories takes long with icons FLICKERING. I notice also that my task manager will not show up in the taskbar by the clock when minimized. I am guessing something somewhere is goofed up, missing, or corrupted, though sfc/scannow noticed nothing.
Can you Help???Have you run full scans with both your anti virus app and MalwareBytes? If not, please do so now.Any Yellow !!'s in Device Manager...this indicates missing/corrupt drivers.
It may also be your startup tasks are overloaded...DLoad and install Startup CPL from Mike Lin...this places a Startup applet in Control Panel that is handy for keeping startup apps under control. Turning items off in there doesn't cripple them...it simply stops them from loading upon startup.
Note: Don't turn off anything if you don't know what it is...

Other than that sometimes a wipe and a clean install of XP does wonders for an older PC...Thanks Guys,
The first thing I do when I have problems is to run full scans with my AV (MSSE), Malwarebytes, and Super Anti Spyware. Results are clean at this time. I also ran the Eset online scan as well.
As far as startups, I Do have a few running but they have been ongoing for some time now. Could all of the program updates be causing the problem? I am always having to update flash, java, MSSE, Firefox, IE, and of course the system. Could these programs be being written for the new multi core processors?

Based on this i'd visit speedtest.net and check your connection speeds vs. what your paying for...If your COMPUTER is using so much CPU all the time...
http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/process-hacker-portable

Download this and install it. It will put a portable version of process hacker into where you ask it to, in other words, it won't write to directories all over the place and in C:\WINDOWS as many programs are wont to do, plus it makes it easy to clean up after. Process Hacker is an advanced Task Manager that will hopefully let you see what's slowing down your computer.

Check to see what's using the most CPU (if you can see it, which you should) but don't close it unless you know what it is or what it does. You don't want to close any programs that windows DEPENDS on.

If it's explorer.exe that's causing the issue (which may or may not be the case), feel free to close it but be prepared to freak out as to where your start bar and desktop went. Just restart explorer.exe using the upper left toolbar functions.

I think that Process Hacker lets you see what startup programs are set as well so you should be able to modify those.

I'm not as familiar with Windows as I am with Linux, but I have used Process Hacker before and it's very useful. The easiest way to see which process is using the cycles is to open Task Manager to the Processes Tab and sort on the CPU column (with highest usage at the top). Which process is it that's spiking? Here is the link mentioned by Patio above.
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtmlThanks to everyone who is trying to help me here. In the windows task manager I see that either Firefox or IE8 are spiking the cpu, depending on which I am using. Firefox seems to have a better performance than IE, but depending on which sites I visit, they are both slow in rendering the pages. Huffpost news is a notorious offender. My network speed test results are as follows:
DL 4.69Mbps UL .98Mbps
The slowdown occurs when the cpu spikes to 100% and stays there for some time. Various programs also cause this activity but browsing seems the worst. Are you running the latest versions of IE and Firefox? If not, please upgrade. Also, try running Firefox Safe Mode (or IE with No Add-Ons). What happens? Thanks Allen,
I am running the latest updates for my software. That is where I am thinking the problem lies... I went through this headache a couple of years back with a friends' computer and anti virus programs. They seem to continuously update and get more complex. The cpu spikes a lot when loading programs, changing pages or even exploring my disk. Just seems to stay there longer than ever before doing routine tasks. Well, it certainly sounds like malware, but you said you ruled that out so let's try a selective startup.

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem STILL occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

I believe you understand the problem.  All software is more complex.  DSL speed just adds to the problem.  Cable is 5X faster for the least expensive tier.
BTW, Microsoft ends support for WinXP Apr., 2014.Thanks again guys,
OK, I will play around with the msconfig to try and isolate the problem, if I can. I have been running a full scan with MSSE for the past 4 hours now and I am only somewhere like half done. The CPU is pegged at around 100% all the time during the scan. with only it and the startup programs running. Very discouraging indeed.  What was the mention of DSL speeds and why would this be a factor in what the computer is doing right now?

Solve : Desktop shortcuts and start menu shortcuts not working?

Answer»

When I click on a shortcut on the Start menu or the Desktop, it doesn't work. I can't open Help and SUPPORT or search. When I try to launch certain programs I get an error message that says "App Name" cannot be found, please be sure you have spelled the name correctly, etc. Internet Explorer loads only "Customize Addons" and won't navigate anywhere. I can't start any program or utility like "Backup" or "Format". Some programs open when I RIGHT click on the shortcut and highlight "open" Enter, but only a few, like Microsoft Works. If you have the original Windows Disc(s) you can perform a repair INSTALLATION which MAY correct this. Sounds like a corrupt registry to me where paths are broken. But a repair install will FIX more than just registry problems if any exist.Do you have an XP CD?

If so, place it in your CD ROM drive and follow the instructions below:
•Click on Start > Run and type sfc /scannow then press Enter (note the space between scf and /scannow)
*Let this run undisturbed until the window with the blue  progress bar goes away
SFC - Which stands for System File Checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.

Solve : New web page comes up as a 2" x 2" squar?

Answer»

Not a major problem, but an annoying one nonetheless.  About 80% of the time, a new (and REQUESTED) web page will appear, not to its full size, but only as a small box, approximately 2"x2".  I can, and do, click on the expand box on the top right of the 2"x2" square and it will expand, but is there anything I can do so that the new web PAGES will appear to their full size when it first appears 100% of the time?use your mouse and hold down the left side of it and drag it to the side of your screen or hit the f11 key..Most windows on your machine (including folders) actually remember the last size of the window and will always open them at that size. However, sometimes it just refuses to remember the last size, instead resorting to the size before that.

If you're still with me, you're solution is simple: you NEED to force it to remember. I can't remember which one, but holding down Ctrl or Shift whilst clicking the close button in the top right will do this. As I SAY, I can't remember which one it is. I just hold both and be done with it.

I just wish it worked with me and my exam revision...  Thanks for all your help.  Your advice did the trick and now all my web pages COME up filling the screen.  Well done.!!!!

Solve : Is the Video card compatible with Dell Dimension 2400??

Answer» http://www.ebay.com/itm/PNY-nVIDIA-GeForce-8400-GS-512MB-DDR2-PCI-Video-Card-/271053110955?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item3f1c063eabHalp?I'd avoid that card which has NO return warranty when SOLD as-is. The quote below is off that ebay auction. So you could be buying a card that is dead and not able to return it for refund given the shady terms.

Quote
Condition:  Used, sold as is. "See Pics"

Testing:  Although we try to test each item, we do not always have the proper equipment to fully test everything.

Warranty:  Our 14 day Dead-on-Arrival (DOA) warranty applies to all items not listed "As Is".  See details in returns/refunds.
In relation to if this would work in your system. It would work if the power supply can handle it. You may find yourself replacing the power supply to 350 watts or better to run this video card.

Also to mention if this system is still just the Celeron 2.4Ghz, you will likely find that the CPU is a bottleneck to any games you want to play. You can pick up a Pentium 4 socket 478 CPU cheap to upgrade that system. Although I would suggest replacing this system with something newer as for its hardware is almost 10 years old if not already 10 years old.

The other day I saw a socket 478 Pentium 4 2.66Ghz for sale for just $5.00 with $2.99 shipping on ebay. I have a eMachine that is a 2002 model which was originally a Celeron 2.0Ghz with 128MB RAM when new. I replaced the Celeron 2.0Ghz with a Pentium 4 2.0Ghz and saw an immediate improvement in performance with the extra cache. I also upgraded to 1GB RAM from the 128MB and even got Windows 7 32-bit to run on it for single-tasking due to low ram, although I went through a struggle to get the display drivers to work with the Intel 845GL integrated video. I have since downgraded it back to Windows XP Pro which runs very well on it.

Far better COMPUTERS can be bought inexpensively new or a good used can be bought that is far more powerful.

I wouldnt invest much money into this computer! And if it were my computer and you can afford to do so, I'd replace it with newer more powerful processing power if you are looking to game on it with modern games.

Lastly PCI is weak for gaming because of the lack of bandwidth for any high end games. I ran into this issue back when I bought a HP Pavilion new in 2001 and it was lacking an AGP port, and only had 3 PCI slots available. I installed a GeForce 4 MX 440 with 64MB RAM and it was horrible for gaming trying to play GTA Vice City. My friend who had a weaker 1.0 Ghz  Pentium 3 while I had a Pentium 4, and of which he had a weaker gpu GeForce 2 with 64mb ram AGP slot type video card gamed far better than the PCI bus on mine.

Oh ok thanks And people say that a 250 W PSU can work that video card without any upgrades because PCI video cards only use about 30 watts. I currently play a game called "Crossfire" By Z8games and the Recommended GPU is 256MB video ram and I now have 64MB.And I currently have a Pentium 4 2.8GHZ 533/512 and willing to upgrade to a Pentium 4 3.06Ghz with HT would it make a big difference with HT?HT makes it act like a dualcore with a virtual 2nd core which is what HyperThreading is. On a system with a HT CPU if you look at the system properties you will see that the OS shows 2 cores, although the 2nd is virtual. *You may have to flash your BIOS prior to the CPU upgrade, see the quote below about the BIOS version A03 or higher. There is a small risk that you can brick/kill the motherboard by a bad flash. I haven't killed a motherboard yet with a bad flash, but have heard others who have. So if the risk is worth the performance gain, that is if this is not your only computer and its worth upgrading this inexpensively, then I'd do so myself if the game lag is related to not enough CPU processing power. You might want to hold off and see how it behaves with the video card upgrade before performing a CPU upgrade as for you may find out that its not needed. However a Pentium 4 HT is better than a single core.

Looking online your motherboard doesnt support 800Mhz FSB CPU's which is a shame... your stuck with 533Mhz. Also it appears that you are stuck with just 512k Cache vs 1M Cache which kind of stinks as for the Pentium 4's with 1M Cache are more powerful for gaming.

I upgraded a single-core Pentium 4 2.66Ghz to a Pentium 4 3.0Ghz HT in a 2nd hand gaming system tower that I bought for $80 in 2006 when the original OWNER wanted to upgrade to a Core 2 Duo from the Pentium 4 2.66Ghz and couldnt find a buyer and was selling it cheap. The ABIT motherboard supported 800Mhz and 1Meg Cache and a friend of mine had a HP that was dead and I got the RAM and CPU out of this system and stuffed it into my $80 tower and it was way better for games like need for speed carbon and world of warcraft etc.

Quote
Yes, the Socket 478, Northwood P4 3.06GHz 533MHz FSB processor, should work fine.

Prior to installing the processor you need to upgrade the BIOS to version A03 [or higher] when updated CPU microcode was added to support the latest CPUs.

From here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19286123.aspxI currently play a game called "Crossfire" FPS game and I would like to improve the FPS because I only get about 15-25 MAX fps. These are my current specs
System:
          Microsoft Windows XP
          Version 2002 SP3
COMPUTER:
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.80GHz 2.79GHz, 2.00GB of RAM. With a 250W power supply. And with a Interrogated 64.0MB Video Card. And BTW thanks for help.Because when I play Crossfire my CPU uses 100% with a P4 2.8GHZ if I upgrade to P4 3.06GHZ HT would it not use 100% of the Cpu. Like you said it uses 2 cores right would it be faster and my Fps would increase in gaming? Because its really hard to snipe with this lag. I think upgrading the Video card might help right? But I don't know what is compatible. If this is the game you are referring to ... then it looks like CPU should be plenty, and it may be running at 100% because of the way that its programmed. http://crossfire.real-time.com/requirements/

Quote
Client Requirements
•Internet Connection, for Public Server access = 256/256 Kb connection (or better)
•Similar to what is needed for Windows 2000 and/or Windows XP, keyboard and mouse
◦Required Hardware = 233 MHz Processor, 160MB of RAM (128MB for Windows, 32MN for GTK), 20MB of free disk space* (12MB for GTK, 6 MB for the client)
◦Recommended Hardware = 300+ MHz Processor, 256+ MB of RAM, 20+ MB of free disk space* (12MB for GTK, 6 MB for the client
** More bandwidth is of course better - even if not constantly being used, just so that the bursts of data get delivered faster

* Assuming the server or client is installed from the packaged .exe file

I find it interesting that it has no info on GPU requirements, or suggested minimum spec. Games created to run on as low as a Pentium II 233Mhz shouldn't bring a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz to its knees at 100% unless its programmed really poorly, or something else is going on to waste CPU processing power.

I have some older games written during Pentium II era, such as Casino Empire, Warcraft II, Diablo II,  that I run on a ( 2002 model e-machine motherboard ) Pentium 4 2.0Ghz with 1GB RAM, 60GB HDD, and integrated Intel 845GL video with 64MB shared memory of the 1GB system RAM, and the CPU varies between 30 and 40% in task manager properties of CPU use under Win XP Pro for those programs on the single-core Pentium 4 that is less powerful than your 2.8Ghz.

I cant test this now, but I have a good variety of systems at home that I can test this on to see if I see same system performance issues with this game. From the looks of it this should run without any problems on my oldest laptop a Dell Pentium III 600Mhz running Windows XP Pro SP3 with 512MB RAM, and 80GB HDD Those specs are really off/outdated, Here are the real specs http://support.z8games.com/systemrequirement.aspx

and the website I looked at due to heavy filter of where I can/cant get to from work computer only let me get to a Crossfire game that was not FPS, but instead an RPG.

Realizing it was a FPS and not an RPG, I then realized that you really need a video card and not use integrated video. With a video card vs integrated video the CPU shouldnt be as hard up for processing power. With integrated video it may be using Software Video Hardware Emulation which runs your CPU hard to render the game. With a real video card Hardware Emulation wouldnt be required and the video cards GPU would handle the rendering instead.

An example of a similarity with a FPS game I have to this is that I had an old Pentium III 850Mhz with integrated video and 32MB shared memory running Unreal Tournament 99. It used Hardware Emulation for the video processing and this had my Pentium III just about pegged while running Windows XP Home on 320MB RAM ( 256mb + 64mb PC100 sticks)

Thinking your dealing with same issue and a video card added will lighten the load on the CPU as well as increase game performance.Ok do you know any compatible video cards for the Dell Dimension 2400? I have the ones available here.
VIDEO CARDS COMPATIBLE:
NVIDIA GeForce 6200 PCI
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 PCI
ATI Radeon 9250 PCI
NVIDIA GeForce 8600 PCI Card
PNY GeForce 8400 GS PCI
Radeon X1550 256MB PCI
ATI Radeon HD2400 Pro 256 MB PCI

Which ones do you think is the best without PSU upgrades. People say the 8400GS is the best and the websites says 250 W cpu recommended. Is that much needed? I currently have a 250W PSU
http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/dell-dimension-2400-pentium/4505-3118_7-30824846.html

The good: Full-fledged Pentium 4 CPU; spacious 120GB hard drive; dual optical drives; 15-inch LCD offers strong image quality; attractive case.

The bad: Limp speaker system; no AGP slot to upgrade weak onboard graphics chip; minitower case leaves little room for future expansion.

The bottom line: A solid desktop for families or students, Dell's budget Dimension 2400 trades 3D gaming prowess for multiple optical drives and general functionality.

I would suggest the GeForce 8400GS PCI out of the list as the best performer. I have run a 8400GS on a 300 watt PSU. Its not a high end video card, but its about as high end that you will get for performance out of a PCI BUS which is a severe bottleneck for graphics. I have tested my 8400GS on Windows XP as well as Windows 7 32-bit. XP is flawless, and Windows 7 works with it if Aero is disabled. Aero can run on 8400GS, but its not stable. I am guessing your sticking with XP.

Solve : Chrome & Folders disappearing off-screen, no apparent way to bring them back.?

Answer»

After launching a video game while having a Chrome WINDOW and a Windows Folder OPEN, the TWO windows are appearing off-screen. I have no way to see them. Closing and re-opening doesn't help. When right-clicking on the task BAR, no option for "move window" appears.

This could be the problem obviously... Right, that was indeed the cause. But after closing out, it should have fixed the problem.

Solve : Creating a directory?

Answer»

How do I CREATE a directory? In Windows Me?Do you mean a folder???  If yes then right click on a clear screen space then SELECT "new" on the drop down menu then click on folder.

If you mean a directory then that's in Dos. At the COMMAND prompt type MD followed by the directory name e.g.  MD MYDIR and the directory MYDIR will be created.

Would help if you indicated what Win version you are using when posting.

Good luck

Solve : Microsoft Outlook E-mails intercepted??

Answer»

I have been getting complains that certain people wish to buy a domain name of our ISP and that these domain names are BOUGHT by someone else three days after the request has been sent, however, their E-mail never arrived.

The ISP helpdesk said they were 'shocked' and donot understand how it could have happened.

Is it possible to intercept E-mail? The user of one PC does not have any Service Pack installed (Illegal version..) and thus, does not have all the security updates required. (Correct me if I am wrong, but you do need SP2 to have each and every update, right?)

Is it even possible that E-mails are INTERCEPTED? Would a 'cybersquatter' go through such lengths or do they have inadequate security? (They donot have a software firewall, only a router firewall) use dodgy programs (Spydocotor, Urlybird, whatever the heck that is) and haven't got a clue about Internet Security.

Their E-mail provider is our Internet Service Provider and they use  Outlook to view their E-mails.

Any thoughts or recommendations are well obliged.has the user reported that his/her mail has been bounced back?...is the mail still sitting on the server?and was never sent? info>http://www.mailmsg.com/carnivore.htm
http://www.leafdigital.com/class/topics/security/printable.htmlI seriously doubt the FBI is involved.

Although that does explain the black vans parked outside..

The ISP claims the E-mail never arrived and the people who sent it say it wasn't returned.

Even THOUGH no SP could be installed on one machine, it does seem to have most (If not all) security updates. No firewall installed, though. I warned them many times but they're too stubborn, even now they won't let me take proper precautions for them.

Thanks for the links so far, Merlin, if you have any recommendations (software or settings) that I could use once these people break free from the reality they're currently in thinking their creditcard information, etc, etc is safe even though they've seen it's not..

I told them to use webmail, but their opinions were quite divided on that.

A car, everyone (seems to) need(s) but a PC is still somewhat of a luxury. Solve : Long delay times?

Answer»

For some reason it seems to take my PC a long time to shut down.  So much so that I've actually TIMED it.

From the time I hit Start/Turn Off Computer, the computer shutoff window takes 1:50 minutes to show up.  After clicking on Shut Down it takes another 2:00 minutes to finally turn off.

I am sure there are extra programs doing something behind the scenes, but is there anything I should be looking out for and eliminating to expedite this process?

e.g. I do have several Microsoft NET Framework entries on my Add/Delete Programs list as well as several Microsoft Visual C++ entries dating back to 2005.

Thanks for your help, as always.

Here are some steps you can take to try to speed up Windows Shutdown. Before editing the registry, be sure to either create an image of your system partition or backup the registry. If you don't know how, please ask.

 1) Make sure "clear pagefile at shutdown" is not enabled:
start - run - regedit
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]

Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0

2) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1 in the Value data text box

For the next two, if the dword value indicated does not exist, create it:

Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 2000

Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000

Reboot

3) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000

Sorry, but it didn't work.

I cloned my C drive, which is the only way I know to save the registry...at least I know it works.

I made the changes you suggested.  Only two needed to be changed...AutoEndTasks entry and the HungAppTimeOut.  The others were already at those values.

Any other ideas? You can see if something starting / running is CAUSING the delay. It may be a time consuming process, but you'll know immediately if you need to go through all the steps:

There are five options under Selective Startup:

Process SYSTEM.INI file
Process WIN.INI file
Load System Services
Load Startup Items
Use Original BOOT.INI

I assumed you meant uncheck the first three, which I did.  However upon booting up I was unable to connect to the internet.

Were these three the ones you wanted me to uncheck?Uncheck all except "Use original boot.ini". And don't worry about the internet, we're diagnosing a shutdown problem.OK, so once I've done that, do I activate programs from the Services tab in msconfig? My instructions are pretty clear.  While you are performing the diagnostic you use msconfig. Once you identify the problem process you use services.msc and Startup Control Panel to permanently disable it / them.

Solve : File Menu Malfunctioning?

Answer»

I have a problem with my file menu taskbar.  Whenever I click a file or folder and press File it acts like I am right clicking the file instead.  It's not something you notice unless you are actively using the file folder to say install fonts and it's not possible for you to do so because you can't use the file menu.

I looked all over and I couldn't find a reason or a solution for this problem.  Any help would be appreciated.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Sorry, don't understand your problem.
You selected an ITEM them did file. It did what you told it to do.
When you select an item and you do file, it is the same as a right click on the item.
If you don;'t  want that,, don't do that.

Just do file with nothing sleeted.

To un select you left click on a blank area.
Ok I needed to go to another computer to see what a normal file menu did which is the same.  My problem is that it doesn't give me the right OPTIONS when I right click a font to install it.  Can that be fixed?Double clik the font file...You lost me..
Is this not how one does fonts in XP?
You get into control panel and you find fonts.
Or in a Word Processor it is in format.
How do you do fonts from a file menu?
What Am I missing here?
Everything. The "File" Menu in windows explorer for file folder viewing is the same as the right-click menu of the selected file.

Windows XP does not have the "Install" option to install fonts using the shell.

In order to install fonts you have to do what Geek mentioned, and go to the Fonts Folder. (By default: C:\Windows\Fonts)

The file menu will have the "Install New Font" Option. I do go to the the font folder.  When I click on the file menu, install new font is not one of the options is what I meant.  Sorry if I wasn't clear.  I think when I didn't see the install new fonts option anymore I assumed it was a problem with the menu for everything.

Double clicking on the font does not install it.  It opens it and I can see the font but when I go to use it, I'm always told that the font is not installed.  I never see the option to install the font like I used to.  QUOTE from: Geek-9pm on JULY 31, 2013, 09:16:42 PM

PROOFREAD YOUR POSTSInteresting.

On a Virtual Machine I was actually able to force this problem where it wasn't occuring. In my case I was able to get the menu to be much shorter as well as be missing the "Install new Font" command.

This issue appeared when I unset the folders read-only attribute. Setting it again and re-opening the folder window fixed it, so try Start->Run and entering this command:

Code: [Select]cmd /c attrib +R C:\Windows\Fonts

close any open Fonts windows and then reopen the Fonts folder; you should have the install new font option again. Now that I know what the problem really is, it was easy to find a solution.  THANKS so much for taking the time to help me figure it out BC and everyone else.  I really appreciate it.

Solve : How To/Should I Copy Registry Key??

Answer»
I deleted the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CONTROLSET001/SERVICES/TUNMP

whilst following the procedure outlined here

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2139271#r13

in order to try and fix a USB endoscope which would work, the system saw it and said it was malfunctioning, and which used the same driver, apparently (from a web forum post, learned someone with a successful install of the endoscope found it was using that driver) as the Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter.

So the idea was to remove the Adapter (which always had a YELLOW MARK against it in the device manager, anyway) and see if that improved things.

But the Adapter wouldn't remove. I couldn't delete it.  The system said it was needed - or might be needed - for bootup.

So I've had to forget that idea for a while but now I find I can't USE Blaze DTV, my tv dongle THING, and I suppose that's because the tun miniport isn't working.

But I can't get it working, it won't start, because of the registry 'hole' I've created.

Now the thing is there's the same key (by name anyway) existing at Controlset03 and 04.

Would it be OKAY to use one of those, copy it over and use it?

How to do that, if it is okay?

Solve : Windows XP 500 gb hard Drive?

Answer»

I recently install new 500 GB on my older dell computer. It has Windows XP. When I go to Computer Management then to disk management then storage I see the rest of the hard drive.
I have all the updates for Windows XP. How do I connect these to partition together? How do I get my C: drive to show all of that space?Your question is unclear. What is the problem? My main drive is only showing 127 GB and the hard drive is 500 GB. How do I get the main drive to show all 500 GB?You installed Windows XP SP1. You should have installed XP SP3. You can either SLIPSTREAM sp3 and start again or use a 3rd party partition manager to reallocate the space as is. Either way, you should be running the latest service pack.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303013

I did that. I have all the updates including SP3. So whats my next STEP?You can either reformat with SP3 or use a 3rd party partition manager. How do I reformat without losing all the updates? My main windows Xp  cd doesn't have the sp3 on it.You need to create a slipstream disc: http://lifehacker.com/386526/slipstream-service-pack-3-into-your-windows-xp-installation-cdAny other suggestions cause I tried that website and followed the instructions but the dvd I created didnt work. You can use a third party software to backup your partition.

One that works for me i s Macrium Reflect
http://www.macrium.com/

I think you also will need another hdd to store the image.

Also, you said older PC Is it older than  Windows XP?  Some really old PCs need to have a BIOS update also.
No it came with windows xp.OK. You have an old PC that came with Windows XP.
You installed a new HDD and XP only lets you use 127GB.
That sounds like a very old XP problem that was FIXED  a long time ago.
It was well documented that Windows XP has a 127GB problem.
The solution was to implement a 48 bit LBA into both BIOS and the OS.
Here one of many sties that talk about tisL.
http://www.largeharddrivesupport.windowsreinstall.com/winxp.htm

Quote

First thing you must be aware of is the need for 48 bit support from your Bios, which is located on your motherboard. Without this your large hard drive will not be fully seen. This will mean installing the latest bios update from your computer manufacturer, or motherboard manufacturer.
Do not download anything from that site. Come back here and either I or somebody will glide you, if lack of 48 bit LBA  BIOS is the real issue.
Doing a BIOS flash has risk. You may want to consider an alternative solution.

EDIT:Forgot to include this link. Important information for MS. The 127GB boo-boo is also called the 137 GB  boo-boo.  (I call it a boo-boo.)

Any other suggestions cause I tried that website and followed the instructions but the dvd I created didnt work.
First of all, you should be able to use a cd not a dvd. Second, if you follow the instructions it WILL work.Easeus also has partition and backup software. Some free. Works good. Will backup to DVD. Some learning time required.
http://www.easeus.com/download.htm
And here is a good list of free backup and disk management .
http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/backupandimage.shtml
Before making any changes, you need a backup. DVD is very good. But you need to test it to see if it works right for you.

Also, somebody mentioned use of a Linux Mint CD to run Linux and copy data to flash drives. Linux mounts partitions as hda1, hda2 and so on.

Solve : WinXP Activation?

I installed winxp pro on my other comp and after the computer starts up, it says 30 days to activate, and when i click on it to activate i put the Product Key and it says : "According to our records the number of times you can activate this product key has exceeded."
What do i do? Dont tell me i paid 200 bucks to only be able to activate once.                  :-/  :-/   :-/you may have to phone m$oft on this one..and argue with them.. more info>http://aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm and more>http://aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm   or this tip>>>>>>>>If you are doing a repair reinstall of XP on the same HARDWARE, you can back up the activation status and then restore it after you run the repair install of the OS. To save the activation status, back up the wpa.dbl file from the %systemroot%\system32 folder to a floppy disk.

After the repair install of the OS is complete, start in Minimal Safe mode. Open the \%systemroot%\system32 folder.  Rename wpa.dbl to wpa.noact. Copy the backed up wpa.dbl file to the system32 folder. Reboot your system.

This isn't a hack to avoid activating installations and will work only on the same hardware for an XP installation that you've already activated.
You should be able to install Windows XP on two machines. The upgrade, that is.As an aside, you do KNOW you can also activate XP by phone, fax, snail mail, pidgeon post (PROBABLY)...And if all else fails, TAKE your local Microsoft PR agent hostage.

Solve : Same question over again?

Answer»

Ok guys I am going to throw my brand new computer out the window soon. I asked a ? last week, got lots of REPLIES (thank you) but so far nothing has worked. My norton tells me I have a trojan virus It is in my system32 folder and the file is called iexplorer32.exe. Norton wont do anything with cause it always says access deined. I have done the spyware, adware sweeps, TRIED all different programs to no avail. This is my computer why dont I have the privledges to delete this file myself. Does XP home have the take ownership function that was WIN2k ?

Use task manager to stop the process from running. In windows explorer, navigate to the file and right click it. Select properties. Clear all check marks in the attributes. Click apply and OK. While the file is highlighted, hold down the shift key and press delete. Rerun your AV.Scan in safe mode. You might have heard this but there are online scans that work very well and if that dosent work you can.....

Write down the location of the virus (s) then boot up in dos using a boot disk you can either use dosshell or go directly to the location and delet it or turn it into a text file. Its best that you delet it though. If you need more exact instructions post and I will try to GET back here soon if needed. give this a whirl>http://www.bulletproofsoft.com/spyware-remover.html :-/ Well if nothing works...don't throw your pc out the window..you may have to go back to square 1. The drastic "F",  format your h.d. and reinstall your OS. Just prepare well ie. backups, uninstall other programs.etc. I don't THINK you'll have much of a problem then.
