Solve : web accelerator?

Answer»

I am using an older computer. It has 256mb memory 40gb harddrive. It also has a 1200 mhz processor. I am also using dial-up. As you all know, this method is very slow. I was wondering if a web accelerator would make browsing faster. If so which free one should I use?

Thank you, Most browsers have built in Web Cache abilities to enable. BUT, you may need to tweak the adjustments on it to get it set up the WAY you want. It basically creates a copy of the visited websites and the next time you visit the website, any information that is the same as last time is not requested over the limited bandwidth of dial-up, but instead only the changed data will be downloaded.

This makes a website that hasnt changed since the last visit load very fast, but a website that isgreatly different will take time to load. Also worse are sites that have flash and other embedded features that can not be stored locally on your computer which have to download and launch with each visit.

One product that I went with that is beyond the normal Web Cache of a browser is SQUID Proxy, but I also had 2 computers sharing a single dial-up connection with one of them running SQUID Proxy. Both computers connected through this proxy and loaded pages QUICKLY, especially if it was a website that had no changes to PICTURES, backgrounds, but only the text info on that website changed since last visit. I also ADDED a routine called autosurf that was a macro that connected to the internet while I was at work and visited  the 20 or so frequently visited websites so that when I got home about an hour later the data on the proxy ( web cache ) was fresh and so it loaded quickly like high speed internet when the website had not changed over that last hour or so or the change was little. For websites like www.weather.com, www.yahoo.com, and some others that I visited daily which had frequently changing information and flash there was little performance gain since between the automatic surf to UPDATE the web cache and the time I went to the website, it had already changed and had to download the new info.

Fortunately I was able to get rid of dial-up and shutdown my proxy. But these are the 2 solutions for your setup, a local web chache built into the browser or use of a proxy as a web cache which is more involved. What website do you suggest I go to for squid proxy?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gF0pv-_h8yU

This video will show how to install and configure it. As far as getting the program, I only use this one clean without bundled junk. Others out there from other sites want you to download it bundled with junk or install a toolbar to download it etc. This is as clean as it gets direct from the source that created it.  http://www.squid-cache.org/Download/

Solve : Windows XP sys.config error:Please Help!!!?

Answer»

trying to APPLY changed settings in config.sys but when I hit SAVE option it comes up "general error while accessing file a:\config sys"

I also tried using help option and it wouldn't work, a error message saying   "make sure that helpfile Edit.HLP is in same director and hasn't been modified. "

please can someone help me out Do you have the original system disc that came with the system? If so I would preform a repair installation if you want to keep programs and personal data intact, otherwise a clean install from this if you want it clean.I do have it but it wouldn't run because it came up with the STACKS overflow error and when I went to change the stacks, it came up as written above. :/ You MAY wanna post your original config.sys and your revised one so we can take a look..
Also CURIOUS...what CHANGES are you tryin to make ? ?

Solve : windows xp home - creating new folder?

Answer»

When I right click on desktop and select NEW- Folder the folder will not appear until I right click and select Refresh!!!!!

Why? I have LOOKED at all the SETTINGS I can and can't see anything else to adjust.

If I delete a folder the SYSTEM deletes it but the folder icon remains on the desktop until, guess what, refresh is clicked.

Why?

Both the above OPERATIONS should occur without refresh being clicked.right -click desktop/properties...customise desktop chose options..

Solve : Missing hemis.sys or config.sys?

Answer»

I was removing spyware off one of my comps the other day and as I was removing one of them, it some how deleted either the hemis.sys or config.sys so now when I boot it up it gives an illegal operation as soon as I see the wallpaper ( this is win 98SE) and forces me to close and nothing has loaded so I can't do anything but shut down. I have the recovery cd from hp but it only gives the option to start computer with or without cd support, I also have the Microsoft 98SE boot floppy. So yeah I need help please.Boot from Win98SE floppy, then type:
copy a:himem.sys c:\windowsmmmm nope I tried copying both other and still doesn't work, when the illegal operation pops up and I click on detail it says something about explorer, when I booted again this time with cd-support, I caught a quick glimpse of something about invalid lines in the config.sys line26-30, probably more but that was all I saw as it was moving so fast. Can you boot into safemode? You may be able to restore one of the backups your Sypware scanner could have created. Quote

...something about invalid lines in the config.sys line26-30, probably more but that was all I saw as it was moving so fast.

Rename config.sys to config.old.  Config.sys not required for Windows98.
load the boot floppy a:\ type cd windows enter c:\ now type scanreg/restore and chose the last GOOD cab FILE...Raptor: When I boot into safemood I still GET the illegal operation

Computer_Commando: Renamed the config.sys to config.old as told.

merlin_2: I put the floppy in, then went to C:\Windows and typed scanreg/restore and it said bad command. Btw whats the command to restart... i tried restart and reboot. Quote
...I have the recovery cd from hp but it only gives the option to start computer with or without cd support...

Start with CD support.
Late reply but I got it going guys, thanks

Solve : Windows XP continuously Reboots?

Answer»

i'm not the best with computers, so last night i did a big boo-boo by putting my computer into a hard boot, while it was in the system restore program (because I wanted to cancel it-but couldn't).  Now my computer won't go through the complete windows startup.  It just continously reboots and when it gets to the windows startup screen (with the blue bars running across the bottom) and then there is a popping sound, and the computer reboots again.  When i try to get to the DOS prompt, it asks for a password, which I have no idea what it could be since I don't remember setting it.  Will someone please help?!

-Super WorriedIf you're using XP as you said then don't bother trying to get to DOS.  Try booting your system into SAFE MODE (when you start booting you should be given boot OPTIONS).  Hopefully once it's booted to SAFE you'll be ok.  If not, you might have to re-install Windows. You can attempt to use the last KNOWN good configuration from the Boot menu (F8 on startup) as well.boot to safe mode  as suggested but try this control panel/system/advanced/settings >startup and recovery/system failure/uncheck the automatically restart feature winxp does this by default if it incounters a problem...its tries this miserable and would better in the long run.. if it was to go back to safe mode instead..or SHUTDOWN and restart itself using the last good cab file it had...I reinstalled Windows XP and that seemed to repair the problem...

Solve : Can't delete a hard drive in windows ME!?

Answer»
I'm trying to erase a hard drive that has windows ME and for some reason can't seem to do it! I KEEP getting a message that the c: drive is busy! I tried getting to the dos prompt at startup but it only gets me to the setup screen! Help me please! Anybody out there in the ether have any suggestions other that taking a big magnet to it or PITCHING out the window?

Please help!
Mad MikeNo doubt a more knowledgeable poster will correct me if I'm wrong but I understand you cannot delete (format) a drive which is in use so if you have booted from C: your cannot then format C:   Perhaps you should boot from a floppy (Bootdisk.com) which has Format on it and then format C: from there?

Good luck

D...Mad Mike....Yes....your absolutely correct if your trying to format the drive from C drive ...you cant as was posted by Dusty..... Use your Win 98 boot disk or if you dont have one , go to www.bootdisk.com  and download one.
Make sure that the boot disk you D/l has the Fdisk function on it as well as the Format command. The disk will also have a few GENERIC cd drivers and several small DOS files .

So after you have the bootdisk....open it up and at the A: prompt type Format C:   followed by enter......
You will get a message saying that all data will be lost ....do you wish to CONTINUE ....answer  yes and it will begin.   Make sure that you have saved whatever you want before doing this ...for example your E mail address book and whatever else you want .

let us know how you make out

dl65
As you are USING ME you should really use an ME bootdiskette.

A:\>format c:

If you want to partition the drive:

A:\>fdisk , and Enable Large Drive Support (Y) when asked.are you selling this pc if so download erazer...or just re-formated it...is this an oem ...?

(I should also note that the header on this error message says:  "16 bit Windows SUBSYSTEM.")

Action I have taken:  I went to the display properties/"Settings" tab and clicked on "16 bit" color setting and tried to INSTALL my file.  Then I set it back to "32 bit" & tried to install...rebooting between each setting.

Solve : Is it possible to do a repair install on Windows XP without disk??

Answer»

I have a very old Windows XP that I bought pretty much as soon as XP was released. I had no hope in it anymore, because it had not updated in years and have it's internet DEAD. I tried to fix some things in there, but I cannot.
So, i came up with the idea of doing a repair install that I learnt about RECENTLY, also because that it doesn't delete my programs and files. Unfortunately, I do not have the Windows XP disk. Maybe because it just didn't have one, or the disk got lost in the past 10 years.
So can I STILL do a repair install?
Any help is appreciated! The make and model are important. Some, like Dell and HP, have OEM CDs that  can be bought on eBay, but they only work on the OEM PC.

So,  you have the Product KEY?

I think you could DOWNLOAD this on a good PC, make a CD from the ISO, and boot it up to replace the system. The answer to your question is no. You need an XP CD to do a repair install. You could try borrowing a disk from someone but it must be the same version as what's on your computer now.Hello. Thanks everyone for the replies. I have borrowed a disk from someone else who bought the exact same XP with me ten years ago. The repair install went fine, and now my Windows XP is great!

Solve : free ms solitaire games?

I've been SEARCHING for Microsoft Windows free solitaire games to install but can't find them anywhere. I once installed from Windows updates a few years ago but no luck now. Have Windows 98 2nd Edition. I can't find anything in Add/Remove programs and the cd had nothing. Where can I get these games without having to purchase them. I really want free cell.

Thanks,
MarianneTry looking in the C:\Windows folder.  It's a while since I ran 98se but seem to REMEMBER there were lots of .exe files with corresponding .txt files tucked away in there

Good luck

D...This happened to me twice when I installed Windows 98SE. I just did a partial re-install. I just selected that portion I wanted to install, in this case "games". Just PUT your disk in as if you're doing a NEW install, select the games and install. Should work.control panel/add/move programs >click windows setup tab> and tick the games box ....done it may ask you for your install disk...or a flasher version>http://home.earthlink.net/~fomalhaut/fcpro.html

Solve : AOL Instant Messenger won't work?

Answer»

I recently tried to up-grade to the newest version of AOL instant messenger. The up-grade didn't work and now when I go to load it, it loads but no login screen APPEARS. I tired to re-install AIM. When I did that, in the install window when the process gets to "Copying fillies: C:\Windows\System\imagehlp.dll" an illegal operation message appears saying "Glj92e4 has preformed an illegal operation" and the installation process doesn't go any further.
I then tried to UNINSTALL AIM when I do that I get a message saying "Can't FIND file 'C:\PROGRA`1\AIM\SYSFILES\AIMWDUninstall.exe'(or one of it's components). Make sure the pathway and filename are correct and that all REQUIRED libraries are available."
Try a program such as Trillian which is CAPABLE of using your ICQ, MSN, AIM and Yahoo accounts in one window.

Solve : Computer locks desktop on startup???

Answer»

I recently installed Windows XP Pro on my DELL P4 COMPUTER.  Registered the CD KEY about a month ago, and now I am having a problem with it.  When I start the computer, it loads to my PASSWORD page....I log in, and it starts to my destop as usual.  Then, nothing happens.  The icons on the desktop dont load, etc.  I can go to the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and nothing is FROZEN, all processes are running fine.

None of the processes are using any of the CPU's memory.  I tried to reinstall the Windows XP CD....and when I put it in the CDROM, I see the little CD icon come up next to the cursor, but the autorun does not initiate.  So then I go to the shutdown menu on the task manager, and restart with the disk in it, hoping it will boot from the D drive, but nothing.  Is there a key code I can use to open the D drive from the empty desktop so I can reinstall this OS, or is there something else I can do to salvage this computer before replacing the HD?

Thanks,
JustinSet the BIOS to boot from CDROM as the first item in the boot sequence. Quote

or is there something else I can do to salvage this computer before replacing the HD?

...  Hello Justin. I take it that the D: drive is a hard-drive partition. Am I right?

Have you tried running SFC the system file checker?

With the XP CD in the CD-ROM drive open the RUN window and type: sfc /scannow

Do you have the Recovery Console installed on the hard-drive?

Again with the XP CD in the C-ROM drive and whilst on-line open the Run window and type:

(CD-ROM drive letter):\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons , and press Enter.Ok, I was able to go to setup (F2) on startup, and set the BIOS to run the D drive instead of the C on startup.  It worked great.  I think I had the sasser worm on the PC, because of the symptoms.  I really appreciate your guys' help.  I own an Internet Cafe ( www.thegigabite.com ), if you guys are ever in the High Desert area of California, stop in

Solve : Lost Notepad?

Answer»

Hello all . . .

Is there some way to get another copy of Notepad, or find the one that's gone missing, if it's still on my computer? When programs LOOK for it, they say they cannot find it. Also, when I try to "View Source" nothing happens, no doubt for the same reason.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Ededfinn......Have you tried opening your front door and calling loudly here notepad , here notepad.......that always works for me ....well almost always.
You didn't say what o/s your using .....but if you have Xp, try clicking start/All Programs/Accessories......then see if notepad is in the list.
Have you removed anything recently and possibly removed notepad as well ?
You MAY have to reinstall windows to get it back.

There is another copy in   C:\WINDOWS\System32 folder (look for notepad.exe)
Let us know if this helps.

dl65

You can go add and remove Windows components by going to the Add/Remove Software function in Start -> Settings -> Configuration -> Add/Remove SoftwareOr see if you've accidently deleted the shortcut, by typing "c:\Windows\notepad.exe" * in the "Run" box...

*dl65, this is where Notepad normally lives, at least in 9x and where I always thought it existed in XP. Can an XPer CLEAR this up? Quote

...Can an XPer clear this up?

Same LOCATION for Win98, Win2k, WinXP.
You could also run a search for *.exe and look for Notepad. Be sure to put the wild card *. before the exe and if it's still on your hard DRIVE, it should show up.

Solve : Media Player Help PLEASE?

Hey, can anyone help me?  I've just installed Windows XP Pro, in my computer.  I upgraded to Windows Media Player 10, then suddenly I couldn't get my mp3 FILES to play.

I am able to play video files, but I can't play my mp3 files.  And even if I copy a music files direct from a music CD, while the music cd is in the drive media player is able to play it, but once I take the music cd off the cd drive, media player couldn't play the file that was saved in the hard disk.

I get the error  something about codec 55 not found.

I appreciate any suggestions you GUYS can provide.

Thanks........You could try in your OPTIONS checking off the "Download codecs.." checkbox.  Make sure your file associations for MP3 files are pointing to Media Player.  If those don't work, try reinstalling Media Player.  As a final solution, download and INSTALL GordianKnot (it's got every codec you'll currently need for sound and video).

Solve : Getting Stuff off a hard drive?

Answer»

Hi,
I have recently installed a new hard drive after my old version of windows XP stopped booting up (it blue screens for an instant then the pc restarts every time).  I NEEDED more space anyway so the plan was to REINSTALL windows on the new hard drive then run the old one as a slave with the jumpers on the back.  All went to plan till it came to getting the stuff off the old drive... when I go to click on it in my computer, a message comes up saying "this drive is not formatted. do you want to format it now?"  The answer to this is no, as it has all my web design work and UNI work and photos on it... basically all I want on it is the my documents folder.  Anyone got any ideas for how to copy this (perhaps USING dos) or just get on to the old drive?

Thanks a lot,  peteSo, windows can see the drive and knows it's there but when you select it you're told it needs to be formatted?  Is the broken drive making any strange noises?  What if you use the Windows backup feature and backup the broken drive or even just backup the files you want. What sizes are these drives? Are they partitioned, and do they both have the same formatting, FAT32 or NTFS?

Did you try the Recovery Console (from the XP CD) and the FIXBOOT command on the old drive?

Solve : keyboard.drv?

Answer»

Alright, here's my problem:

When I turn on the computer, it opens the screen that asks which mode I want to start with, safe mode, normal mode etc.  Whatever mode I pick, it next goes to a black screen with a little cursor blinking at the top.  After about five minutes of this screen it flashes the message: Error loading keyboard.drv.  You must reinstall windows.  I've tried reinstalling windows. It just freezes.  Is there some other option? I have WindowsME and a Dell computer.  Boot from the WinME CD and perform a Repair Install.I was looking on the microsoft website and I found this.  But I've tried it and it doesn't work.

To resolve this issue, extract a new copy of Keyboard.drv from your Windows compact disc to the Windows\System folder. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Insert a Windows 98 Startup disk, and then start the computer.
2. Select Start computer with CD-ROM support on the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup menu, and then press ENTER.
3. Note the drive letter ASSIGNED to the CD-ROM drive. For example, E.
4. Insert the Windows 98 compact disc into the computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
5. At the command prompt, type Ext, and then press ENTER.

Microsoft Extract Command Line Helper starts.
6. At the Please enter the path to the Windows CAB files (a:) message, type drive:\win98 (where drive is the drive letter that you noted in step 3), and then press ENTER. For example:
E:\win98
7. At the Please enter the name(s) of the files(s) you want to extract message, type Keyboard.drv, and then press ENTER.
8. At the Please enter the path to extract to ("Enter" for current directory) message, type C:\Windows\System, and then press ENTER.
9. At the Is this okay? (y/n) message, type y, and then press ENTER. If you receive the following message
Overwrite C:\Windows\System\Keyboard.drv (Yes/No/All)?
type y, and then press ENTER. The FILE is extracted.
10. Remove the Windows 98 Startup disk, and then restart the computer.
You're not on the Dell?  It won't boot?

Okay...stupid question...is the keyboard unplugged from the computer...check it.

I'm not on my computer right now. And yes the keyboard is plugged into my computer at home. I can't boot the computer because the keyboard.drv THING comes up.  I've tried reinstalling windows, it freezes at the copy files point.  I've tried to extract the driver, it gives me the message of Error: cannot open e:/win98.  I've tried switching it to winme because that is my operating system doesn't work.  I've checked my cd rom drive. It's correct.  And it still gives me the error.Have you tried using the Windows 2000 Repair option as Computer Commando suggested?I went home last night and put in the WinME operating system cd. It doesn't offer a repair install. It just tries to reinstall the entire Windows system.  But when it gets to the copying files part, it freezes at 10%.I'm no expert on WinME.  I have used it and WinME is by far the WORST OS that Microsoft has ever released.  It's worse than Win98 or Win95.  It is very unstable and will do all kinds of strange things.

That aside, can you borrow another keyboard to try first?  It could be something as simple as a blown out keyboard, it's not common but it can happen.  There's electronics in the keyboard, too. Before we commend winme...is made up from win95/98/nt...back to the plot does your keyboard num lock come on? ....and does the mouse work?...and is this a usb..or wireless keyboard...or a standard ps2 one...do you have a floppy boot disk....or try this>http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/oem/dell/dell_MEpc.htmI've DONE all this. I even tried a different winme install disc. It just freezes at 10%.Try this:

uninstalled and reinstalled the software. when the

When opened they contain the message "Your computer may be infected with Spyware! Click here to scan your computer for FREE."
I arttempted to block the website through my firewall.  Now it says the site is blocked but it still attempts to ACCESS my computer 20 - 30 times a day.

I also get a message asking for server rights from udall.exe ? Immediately after I close that I get a message asking for server rights for abetterinternet.com.
I have said NO to both repeatedly but I get them several times a day.
Does  anyone know of this problem, or have a solution?
It's extremely annoying!!!!!

To uninstall SearchWWW, remove the "Search" or "Search.vbs" shortcut from your Start -> Programs -> Startup folder and reboot your computer.

I blocked the websites cookies and pressed cancel when it asked to perform the so called scan.. That is what came up, I doubt that actually removes all entries but you can try.I am using WinXP, my ISP is Adelphia, a cabe connection.  My firewall is Zone Alarm Pro and I use AdAware ad blocking, Norton Internet Security and Norton Systems Works.  I have a Dell, 80GB HD and 384MB Ram.  I have removed any REFERENCE to vbs.searchwww from my startup and from anywhere else it appeared on the system.  But this MORNING vbs.searchwww had attemped to open 24 times during the night.

The 3 things are bugging me!  Just the fact that I have to close or cancel them so many times a day. (the vbs.search, the udall.exe and the abetterinternet.com.)
Thanks for replying!!!.......Have you tried removing these files manually?go into Zonealarm and click on disallow for the programs that you don't want to have server rights.... It'll stop bothering ya there.

Go into Control Panel-> Add or Remove Programs

Remove any programs that you believe are junk or UNFAMILIAR...... if that doesn't work......

Run a search for udall.exe and erase it..... same goes with abetterinternet.com...... since it asked for server rights... it's probably an app...

Solve : Marscore.dll?

Answer»

The marscore.dll on my computer is supposedly missing. I don't know how it went missing, when it went missing, or how. The PC apparently needs it for running the "Help" and "System Restore" and "System Information" facilities. This of course means I can't access the "Help" system, view "Systems INFO" or use "System Restore". There are probably other things that I can't do as well that I haven't yet come across.

I've tried downloading the .dll from places online and putting them in the correct places: in the "binaries" SECTION of the PC Health file in Windows, and in Windows\System 32. But nothing happens. It still doesn't work.

I haven't got a Windows XP Home Operating Systems disc (I do have the XP Service Pack 2 Disc), so I can't use that to replace files. The computer (Compaq Presario) came pre-installed with XP Home Edition when I bought it from Sears.

THANKS...ncSkeet

reboot pc and keep tapping the f8 key and chose the last good config option....and have you kept up with your updates..Thanks for your suggestion. I rebooted and did the F8 thing, and it made no difference. And yes, I check for updates daily.
_______
ncSkeetYou will most likely have to format and reinstall Windows XP.

I once removed a .DLL (Due to Pest Patrol saying it was spyware) and I ended up with not being able to access 1. Help function 2. Device manager 3. Services.msc and perhaps other things that I overlooked.

You should obtain a (legal) copy of Windows XP, having an Operating System on a CD is a must.ncSkeet......Re your issue...did you not receive a set of rescue/restore disks from Sears with your pc.....? How long have you had it ?
The other odd thing is I have 2 pcs each with XP Hoime on them and SP2.....and neither has marscore.dll on them.....searched all files hidden and otherwise and in the registry as well ....no trace of it. Both these machines work fine.
I was doing some looking online and I see referance to that dll being used in Win95/98/ me  but not xp home or xp Pro....
Exactly what was it you were trying to do when this issue POPPED up ?

let us know
dl65
I ordered my PC online from Sears, and there was nothing there about sending an extra copy of the OS on disc. What kind of disc does the "Compaq Recovery CD-DVD Creator" in my Start menu make? Due to my current financial situation, I am unable to purchase another copy of XP on disc.

I first noticed the problem on Tuesday when I tried to open "Help & Support" from my Start menu. When I Googled it I had read where the same situation with "Marscore DLL" had  caused similar problems for others with "System Information" and "System Restore", so I checked and it had done the same to my system. It actually appears to be a relatively common problem that is extremely difficult to fix. I also read where the problem may be the result of running a program called "Easy Cleaner" from ToniArts. I do have that program, so I tried the fix for it that ToniArts has on their website, but it  didn't help.

I appreciate your responses. Since I have discovered that a lot of folks would benefit from it, I would still like to think that their is a solution for this problem that doesn't involve formating and reinstalling Windows XP. But after getting advice from experts like y'all I'm about to give up hope for that.
_____________
Thanks...ncSkeetncSkeet....I have never had to use a restore disk.....so I am not in a position to offer a fix for your dilema..but I was under the impression that you should be able to create your own recover disks from the software which came with your pc ......Have you Emailed Sears (or better yet spoken to someone there about your problem) ......and what about Compaq/HP.......can they offer no help. The other thing you could try is......click.....
Start /All programs/Accessories/System Tools.....then select either system information or system restore.
What happens if you click on ...Cnrl/Alt/Del......does your task manager open......?.
The other thing that comes to mind is .....the program you have called Easy cleaner....does it not have a log file in it which would indicate what it has removed and possibly even have backups of your system .....

I haven't yet spoken to or emailed Sears or Compaq. It's been over a year since I bought this computer so any Warranty has expired. What kind of disc does the "Compaq Recovery CD-DVD Creator" in my Start menu make?

I went back to "Easy Cleaner" and undid everything I had done. (This is in addition to using the so-called "fix" for the problem from their website.) And yes, I can still access the Task Manager, by using both the c+a+d option and right-clicking on the taskbar.

ncSkeetthis pc should have a dvd recovery disk?did you try system restore? The marscore.dll on my computer is supposedly missing. I don't know how it went missing, when it went missing, or how. The PC apparently needs it for running the "Help" and "System Restore" and "System Information" facilities. This of course means I can't access the "Help" system, view "Systems Info" or use "System Restore" by any means. I still get the "marscore .dll is missing" window if I try to access any of those functions, even though I have downloaded and installed that .dll as described in my other posts.

What kind of disc does the "Compaq Recovery CD-DVD Creator" in my Start menu make? I have a CD burner, but not a DVD burner.

When im tryin to open programs such as "Nesticle" or "znes" or "final fantasy 7" and other games.... The screen goes black like its LOADING something but nothing happens... the program just closes and no error message or anything.. Is it the program or my computer?Jacob Edwardo.....Does your pc allow you to send and receive E mail and surf the net ok ? The items you describe sound like games......and have they ever worked on that pc ?
A bit more information MIGHT just produce a more definitive answer .

Let us know

dl65 Scan for viruses, trojans and spyware.Yes my computer allows me to send/receive emails and also surf the net.... I have scanned for spyware/adware and have come up with nothing, the same with trojans... yes they have worked before but i took it to get "fixed" and they stopped working after the repair guy reformated.... I Think those files might be dos run files if that helps for an answerIf these programs were INSTALLED on a DIFFERENT partition or Hard Disk Drive and you formatted your primairy (C:) station or whatever station your OS was installed on, you may need to reinstall the programs because their registry entries and perhaps even important files have been removed.

If you are now using another Operating System, the programs may have become INCOMPATIBLE.

Solve : microsoft games?

Answer»

I've been searching for MICROSOFT Windows free solitaire games to install but can't find them anywhere. I once installed from Windows updates a few years AGO but no luck now. Have Windows 98 2nd Edition. I can't find anything in Add/Remove programs and the cd had nothing. Where can I get these games without having to purchase them. I really want free cell.

Thanks,
Marianne
ok go into the control panel click the add/remove icon then click the windows setup tab..in there should be a list of what you have on your pc...scroll down the list and it should tell you if you have freecell solitare tick the box...it may ask you for your cdinstall disk..someone may have customize your system and omited them?Firstly, posting twice isn't going to get the problem solved any faster Marianne. In fact, it might just land you up with conflicting advice which could MEAN you land up damaging your system. Fortunately, I doubt this could be the case here.

Anyway, try searching for these files...
FREECELL.EXE (for Freecell, funnily enough)
MSHEARTS.EXE (Hearts)
SOL.EXE (Obscure, I know)
WINMINE.EXE (My favourite!)
... by clicking on Start > Find and typing in the relevant filename and you should find them in c:\Windows. If you find them, just right click on the FILE and click on Send To > DESKTOP (create shortcut) and - lo and behold - and enjoy Freecell! (or Hearts, or Solitaire, or...)

Solve : C Drive Full - D Drive Empty?

Answer»

I have been putting this off for years  !

Windows XP SP3.
C drive is full, I have deleted everything, but even if I do somehow get 200mb free, within minutes drive is full again (don't know why this is) - so computer is unusable at moment.
D drive has 60GB free.

I am assuming that the hard drive is 'one unit', so I was thinking that I should gain extra space by transferring from D to C - is this some kind of re-partitioning? I haven't a clue what to do next

many thanks1) You can save a LOT of disc space on c: drive by disabling system restore. As soon as you do this, all restore points will be deleted. You can then use disc imaging software on a regular basis - it's more reliable and a much better backup solution.

2) You can manipulate the space on the drives (move some free space from d: to c:) with the use of 3rd party disc partitioning software. An excellent choice is Easeus Partition Master: http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm

Performing any disc level activity, such as repartitioning, involves some level of risk (not much if you follow the instructions, but still.....). As a precaution, you should create an image of the hd prior to repartitioning. An excellent free utility for disc imaging is Macrium Reflect: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

Ideally you will create the image on an external hd.Many thanks

How do I disable the system restore?

I do not know what disc imaging is, but I will download Macrium Reflect, assuming I have enough room! Or can I download and run program from my D drive (which has only data on it really)?

You can install any program to any drive.

System Restore: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405Bit of a problem, System Restore was off anyway.

This week I have deleted a few programs which were around 400mb - but at the moment I only have around 130mb free space, hard drive just seems to fill up quick for know apparent reason, even though I keep rebooting and running disk clean up.

I am going to try a disk defrag overnight to see if it makes any difference. Quote from: Allan on September 10, 2013, 09:41:15 AM

OK - just tried to install Reflect Free, I downloaded it to the D drive, DOUBLE clicked on the .exe, but then get the message that 650mb is required on C drive and only 130mb exists. It suggests deleting stuff but I don't know how to get that much

So can I install the partition program,  do I have enough space? Or can I load programs on the D drive - I do not know how to do this.

Or should I try a defrag? Or is there anything else/another way?Do as Allan SAID in Reply #1.

Right click My Computer, Left click Properties
System Restore tab, Turn off System Restore on All Drives

Reboot may be required.CC: Unfortunately the OP states that System Restore was never enabled.

Kerry: Delete everything in the Temp folder and the Temporary Internet Files Folder (you can do the latter from within the Internet Applet).

Defragging will not help you

Run Disk Cleanup on C: Drive (Right click on C: drive in Windows EXPLORER, Properties, Disk Cleanup - also run the "More Options" button feature). Let's see how much free space you have after all this.
I'd like to see a screenshot of Disk Management...
That being said DLoad and install Treesize to see what's eatin your space up...you can post a screenshot of that as welll while you're at itI now have 230MB free.

Should I install Treesize - how much space does it take? Will it actually install?

Is there any way of installing the partition program? Or is this a bad idea without making some kind of backup? Quote from: Allan on September 10, 2013, 09:41:15 AM

Do this FIRST, if all cleanup for "C" fails.  Level of risk is very low.
Partition Wizard is another free one, which I think is a bit better than Partition Master.  Install them both, see which one you like.
http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.htmlIt sounds like something is creating a log or filling itself up each time you clean up space. Unless you can stop this, it will keep happening. The use of Treesize, as previously recommended, is exactly what you need to use.  You can install it to your D drive, just use the custom install and change the install path to D:\Treesize Then run it to figure your C Drive issue.OK, I have now run CC Cleaner, and now have about 500mb free!

I was thinking of downloading the partition software onto Drive D (which I know how to do). What I don't know how to do is install the software so it stays and runs from Drive C (any software I install always seems to end up on Drive C).

thank you for your help When you install the software (This applies to most, but all software is different) you will need to change the install directory.
It usually gives a DEFAULT that looks like c:\program files\software_name

You will need to change it d:\software_name or you can still do it as d:\program files\software_name if you plan installing more software on this drive. Helps to keep it organized.

Some software will ask for either a Defualt or Custom install, you should select the custom to get to the install location prompt. Others will just have the prompts.

So slow down on the install and dont just select NEXT on everything, but read each prompt and answer the questions.

Solve : how to use auto system power on/off function?

Answer»

I've searched multiple keywords in WIN HELP, looked through all the Control Panel items, and searched the forums here, yet found NOTHING about the automatic system startup or shutdown function that I remember vaguely having heard/seen is possible.  Then I searched the forums with yet one more variant of keywords, and finally found some MENTION that this is possible.  But, no details of how you use it.  So, how do I use such an obscure function?

BTW, it SEEMS annoyances.org is down for good  , since it's been "temporarily down for maintainance" for months on end.  So it's about time I started an account here.
I guess this had everyone stumped, as there were no responses.  But, I found the solution!  Task Scheduler was the key, and I had been thinking that might be it, but I didn't play around with it.  It wouldn't have been that straightforward to figure out, anyhow.  In case anyone else wants to find out how to do this: http://www.winxptutor.com/schsd.htm

Solve : Cannot delete "My Old Disk Structure" fo?

Answer»

Has anyone else had this problem? I did a system recovery recently on my Windows XP system, and a folder called "My Old Disk Stucture" was created in the root drive (all my old files). I have tried everything and cannot delete this folder. What's REALLY strange is that I was able to delete the contents so now the folder appears to be empty, but the computer thinks it's a 3 GB folder. Any attempt to delete eventually is interrupted with the error message: Error deleting File or Folder. Cannote delete Dc4. Access is denied. Make sure the disk is full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use."Have you tried deleting it in DOS?

>DEL C:\Foldernamehttp://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_undeletable_file.htm  and for future use>http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308419Thanks so much. Someone else also suggested that to me this morning. But they also warned that there may be something important in that folder that potentially could screw things up if deleted, so I'd better back up any important documents. I'm THINKING that if it's my old disk structure, then it shouldn't affect anything at all. Would you agree with that?It depends on what is in your old disk structure folder ...was this an upgrade if so it may contain files needed for your upgrade...as is  a microsoft its conning the user to believe that they have a brand new o/s...as files are used from the old system...and also if the user get fed-up with windows xp they can uninstall it if they wish?always pays to check any folder deletion anyways...>PLAY safe it pays.. Tried that Merlin_2, but it did not delete the folder, just the new.txt file I put in it.

Deleting from the Recovery Console should work alright though.
Tried your SUGGESTION last night, booting from a Win98 startup disk, but the DOS didn't recognize my C: drive because it's NTFS. Next, tried a simple RD (remove directory) command from a command window within XP, but it returns a directory not empty message. XP shows this folder to be 3 GB, but there are no files in it, hidden or otherwise. Finally tried to run D:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons as per the XP help instructions, but my recovery CD doesn't have that file. I'm thinking now that my next solution may have to include the use of explosives.Try booting to Safe Mode and then delete it.  That directory is probably a Recovery Point name and cannot be deleted when booted in Normal Mode.  You can also boot with the Win98 disk and run a small program called NTFSDOS which will allow DOS to read and write to NTFS.

I'll try the utilities from those links, Merlin. The Safe Mode idea didn't work; did the RD command, and it STILL denied me access. Thanks again for all the help. This SITE rocks...

Solve : XP Questions?

Answer»

Why is my computer constantly uploading, (who knows what?) to who knows where, when I am connected online. If you watch your DSL modem and see the FLICKING lights you know what I mean. I monitor network activity in the task window and see a constant 0.03% of the bandwith being used to upload something somewhere. What is this? Am I crazey? Have I explained this well? How do I stop this?have you scanned for spyware/adware and tojans?I did find one called
webrebates0.exe
running but how do you find trojan programs?download and run www.trojanhunter.comTHANKS, I'll try that.Scan for viruses, spyware and trojans.

Refer to the Please Read This First - Viruses & Spyware sticky in the Viruses & Spyware section  for more information.are you using kazza/ blubster or any other p2p programs..you could try this>http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/Psycho Pete......If you monitor activity using the device manager......control/alt/delete .......then select task manager.....and then click the "Processes" tab ...this will show you exactly was running . You can shut it down by using the end now button.

hope this helps you

dl65 Do you have automatic updates on? It will come on and run in the background downloading the latest xp updates which of late is sp2...I've turned off any kind of auto anything with XP, I have looked at the processes that were running, out of about 29 items I found a couple that I stopped, to no avail. I ran the trojan and have done this a number of times, 47 embedded programs running the first time. Anyway I have checked and rechecked, I think my next step is to re-install the OS and see what happens, I have it on another drive and most programs work after. My uploading is still going on, at least .03-.05% of the bandwith is constantly in use.Psycho Pete.......what kind of firewall are you using ?

let us know

dl65  EUREKA!
FINALLY, the "Stinger" program worked the best, it found a "SDBOT.worm gen" virus in my system32 file of windows, once it cleaned it out it stopped uploading right away, must have been a self replicating worm virus that was trying to infect everyone else online, anyway just like that it stopped and my modem is now not moving at all unless I want it to, thanks guys! I will now spread the word of "Stinger" to everyone I know.
Thanks again!I have a hard firewall with my ROUTER,obviously isn't very good at worms, I will PROBABLY go back to my Symantec antivirus but you are forever updating it, anyway I'm good till the next worm comes along, hopefully I can smash it first this time.Psycho Pete......Glad to hear you found it.....Just a word of caution .....Stinger isnt the end all ...its was put together as a tool to assist ridding a pc of pests that sometimes prevent getting online . It is good but is limited to what it can do .
It is not a substitute for a full time virus scanner.

dl65  Psycho Pete....Set your Norton to auto update ...then you dont have to keep checking ......it works very well.

Solve : norton anti virus question??

Answer»

Question for anyone how might know?

MY norton says i have a virus  the object is

C:\windows\system32\iexplore32.exe?

IS this right? I have no problems with my computer and am very careful what I download or install. I assume you you are using W98. There is no such file on my machine and there is no iexplore.* files in the system32 directory. Norton is probably right. You can always quarantine it and make sure everything works OK before final removal. The virus in question is>Backdoor.Aphexdoor  and its nice to see that you not failing for the sales pitch of winxp...stick with what you have m8Give up with the computer altogether and get a real life in the Army Corps of Engineers. You get better computers and better protection too!

Especially from Big brother and the Aristocats playing "Who's looking at *censored*."

As for XP it has no shortage of system resources (XP 64-bit is even better of course.) but a lot of XP computers suffer from a shortage of RAM

512Mb is really the minimum to fully multi-task. You'll probably still have a paging file, and if your system needs a paging file then it is short of RAM.

More RAM = less paging file. (Swap-file.) and the paging file is no substitute for RAM.

If you buy an XP computer for Professional use it can take the full 4 x 1024Mb of RAM, But it needs to have a MOTHERBOARD that will take four 1024Mb modules.

XP 64-bit can take 16 x 1024Mb of RAM.

Now that is for computing and not for looking at *censored*.What are you on about Mac? Your post wasn't quite related to this topic..Jeff Wolfe.....What version of Norton are you using....
If you take the advice of 2K Dummy and quarantine it....you will be able to put it back if its not a virus.....but it is .......( Actually it's a Trojan not a virus) .....here's some info on it ...
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.aphexdoor.html
I would certainly remove it.

Hope this helps

"The virus in question is Backdoor.Aphexdoor and it's nice to see that you not failing for the sales pitch of winxp ...stick with what you have ...

Bad advice really. XP outperforms all '9x, ME platforms as long as you realise that its performance is not limited by a shortage of system resources anymore but it can be severly limited by a shortage of RAM.

512Mb is a MINIMUM for XP 1024Mb IS defilitely better.

It CAN take up to 4·0Gb (4 x 1024Mb) and CAN use it all depending on what you are using your computer for and what programming you have, such as a Naval Architect's stability and ship-form CAD-CAM program, or other engineering/scientific program or large database.

XP 64-bit programming has even more available system resources and can use up to 16Gb of RAM.

It is to give people a better idea of the serious uses to which these computers can be put. Some background info for everyone. I am running XP with 1024MB RAM. AS for qurentine and deleting this file norton WONT qurentine or delete it?Go into task MANAGER and see if you find it running. Disable it and try again.I CHECKED task manager and nothing there. Here is something else. I tried to manually delete, access denied. PLus it doesnt always pop up? Just say every other time I start my computer?

I've repaired it, reinstalled it and still the same.

Update icon returned again.  Clicked it, icon disappeared.

MSE won't update either, even after full uninstall & then reinstall.

Solve : How shall I install XP from a USB drive??

Answer»

As you know, some notebooks come with no CD-ROOM drive. That makes it very hard to install XP again,  if needed.
I did it once before,  but not using a USB flash drive. But it was very TIME intensive.
So, now I want to try the  USB method. THEE is a very nice tutorial here on CH. But same  issue about the downloads came up. It seems the links are either down or go to bad software. Same things happen when I try other sites that have  similar information.

I think the solution would be BERT PE. Bat I have not  yet tried.

So, my question is, what is the easy way7 to install XP on a notebook with no CD ROM  drive?
Do you have another MACHINE with a CD drive?  If so, you can create an ISO from your XP CD using a program such as LC ISO Creator, then use your PREFERRED method to create a bootable USB drive from that ISO.
Hope this helps.
