Solve : PC dead!!?

Answer»

Hi from Scotland. My PC which is about 2 years old will not boot up now. It powers up but you do not get the beep just after it fires up and the monitor GREEN light only flashes to show it is getting power, not sure where to start so any advice would be much appreciated. Many thanks in anticipation, Jim.Much more info on your machine, OS and what happened prior to this and someone will be along shortly to assist...

patio. 8-)Thanks for your reply, OS is Xp professional, it had been getting steadily unreliable with various errors being flagged up but it always worked, I suppose I should have backed up data and looked into it earlier but I didn't, also I had noticed that for quite a while the Windows Restore function would not work, ie. it would go through the motions but afterwards would say"windows was not able to restore your computer, no changes have been made", Motherboard is Asrock manufacture, it has been very good performance wise till now, thanks, Jim.Do you know any more information about your machine than the motnerboard, such as CPU, RAM and hard disk?
This may help in troubleshootingAre all the fans operational?

Do any of the mainboard capacitors look like the ones in the picture below?

hi again, fans are operational, both CPU and the PSU, hard disc is a 120gb Samsung 7200 rpm, CPU type I can't recall but can let you know tomorow when I find the paperwork that came with it, RAM is about 1350mb, talking about the fans I REMEMBER recently switching the PC on and noticed how quiet it was because a fan was not working but immediately switched it off, next time I switched it on it was was working again, hope all this is of help, I have also been into the case to make sure it was clear of dust and all connections were tight both on the board and hard disc etc.Raptor, what's your point? Are those capacitors about to have a volcanic eruption or something? Quote

Raptor, what's your point? Are those capacitors about to have a volcanic eruption or something?

Haha, actually, they allready have erupted. They are, in this stage, unable to store power and therefore render the motherboard useless.

It really ticks me off when people don't PROPERLY read my posts. Even though they just consist of one bloody line and a huge picture.I can't tell for sure from your image, but did I see some swelling on top of those capacitors with pus oozing out of them? I just looked at my capacitors and they all appear to be flat on top and no pus oozing out. They're healthy, right? Yep, once they start swelling up or leaking, you have to either replace the capacitors or the mainboard.

When people say their PC refuses to start or just shuts down, I always inspect the mainboard to see if the capacitors are leaking. Is that something that can be done as a DIY PROJECT, for the adventurous? Can a DIY dude actually remove them and properly attach new ones? Where did you get them? I see different size capacitors on my motherboard. I PRESUME any replacment should, of course, have the same specs as the old one.Actually, they should be quite simple to replace. You take off the capacitors in question, locate an electro-shop that sells these and ask for a replacement, then you solder the new ones in place and if everything goes well and nothing else is damaged you should have a fully functional mainboard again.

PC stores are a great source for broken mainboards.Hi again all, my capacitors look fine, any more ideas or is a faulty motherboard the most likely thing?Do you see a POST screen (white writing on a black screen) when you first boot up?Hi Fed. no I get nothing at all, Jim.

Solve : My Login Screen only works 2/3rds of the time.?

Answer»

In my Legal XP, I've been having tons of trouble with the login screen. Sometimes, while TRYING to highlight one of the usernames, the COMPUTER refuses too respond, SEEMINGLY frozen. The mouse still can move around, but after trying to click about 3 times, the computer tower beeps at me, and the mouse refuses to move. It then needs to be SHUTDOWN by holding the power button.

This is QUITE an odd problem, and I have no idea how to fix itHave you tried TweakUI.exe?

Solve : 3.5 Floppy Improper Format?

Answer»

nope never dropped that I KNOW of. The previous owner said it was working fine and it worked fine before I formatted her CRAP off there and reinstalled everything. As far as I know it worked after getting everything installed. It just seems really awkward to have a strange format issue after replacing the drive as well.

*EDIT* As a MATTER of fact I know it worked after I reformatted because I formatted a floppy disk to FLASH the dvd drive and the bios.Any ideas from anyone? Quote

If a replacement cable is READILY available and relatively inexpensive that would be the next thing i would replace.
I can't see though a cable choosing an odd format size but it's worth a shot at this point.

Was this laptop dropped ? ?

Solve : System Volume information files?

Answer»

When I run defrag, I end up with 15-20 System Volume Information files with fragments. If I use "search" to LOCATE these files, there is no indication they even exist. Does anyone know anything about these files, wheter or not they can be deleted. etc.?These are System Restore files. System Restore is reckoned to restore your system files to a prior time if you suffer a small disaster. Most of the time System Restore doesn't work. If you wish to not have the System Restore feature hold down the Windows key and press break to bring up System PROPERTIES , OPEN the System Restore tag and check the BOX to turn off System Restore then Apply then OK. All of the system restore files will be deleted.

If you subsequently want to invoke System Restore for the instructions above and uncheck the box..

Thanks dusty. I did what you suggested and GOT rid of those files. I have used System Restore before with good success. Maybe I was just lucky.

Do you have a real, SHINY XP DISC? Let me guess, XP Pro?I would suggest you don't open DOS.

Solve : shutting down PC with startup button?

Answer»

Salam EVERYONE..
I have seen this TRICK with WIN XP but I don't know how to do it..it is to shut down your computer correctly but by pressing the startup button on your case(the same one starts the computer)..the shut down PROCEDURE is similar to the normal "healthy" way through which the PC goes off on XP..

thanks In Windows XP Home Edition, the power button's default function is to shut down Windows normally.
To CHANGE the function in Windows XP Home Edition, go to 'Control PANEL' / 'Power Options' (In category view, go to 'Control Panel' / 'Performance and Maintenance' / 'Power Options'). Click the 'Advanced' tab and under 'Power buttons', you can change the function of the power button.thanks alot E_Andrew ...worked like magic...i have SP2 and the method you gave worked on it too..thanks again

Solve : Can using msconfig make your computer blue screen??

Answer»

My question is can using msconfig make your computer blue screen? What happen is my buddy he has a toshiba laptop not sure the model but he said he click some things off of the msconfig startup menu and then defraged his system. He said when he restarted it the next it would not boot up and had a blue screen. He said he did not install any new software and the only thing he really uses it for is aol instant messanger. If you can help please let me know. dgiles..... Perhaps if you told us what your buddy took out ........
But to ANSWER your question ....... yup it's possible.
I also think it prudent to tell us why he was playing around in msconfig ?

dl65 he took out things like aol instant messanger and other thing he knew. could it be possible that defragment pushed HARD too far that it failed? or did he take out something he shouldn't have.... if so how could he fix this?dgiles....... I wouldnt think defragging would have caused the issue........ I'd be more inclined to think he removed something he shouldn't have.

Will the machine boot in safe mode ?
What OPERATING system is ( was ) installed ?
Does he have the option of using the last known good configuration ?

dl65 It doesn't start in safe mode or last known config and he was using windows xpDo you have a real, shiny, XP CD that says MICROSOFT all over it for that machine?

Solve : Windows Explorer has encountered an error?

Answer»

I am having a nightmare with Windows Explorer! It encounters an error every few minutes and needs to close! I reported it to the MICOSOFT error reporting notice that pops up when thing close due to errors and they say it is a Add-On in Internet Explorer. I have since disabled everything in IE, both add-ons and active X, and the problem still exists. I am running XP SP2 with IE7

Is there any thing that I can do to fix this that doesn't require formatting the hard drive and reinstalling everything?
    Please help me!

Thanks, JBWhat are you using for malware protection?

What preceeded this?

Consider uninstalling IE7?Does the error message say anything else other than "Windows explorer has encountered an error and needs to close"? For example, is there an error code number?

Did this happen after you installed IE 7, or was it happening before you installed IE 7?

Did you install the beta version of IE 7, or the version without bugs?

Quote

You're funny, Doc! I use spy-bot, Ad-Aware plus, and Spy Doctor. I installed the beta3 first then the RC release and now I have the regular release. I thought they all have bugs! Some less than others. Anyway, It was around before I changed to IE7 only not as often. I just had the error and it doesn't have a code.

You need to add a good anti-virus to your protection package...i highly recommend AVG Free.I have Norton 2007 anti-virus and FIREWALL. This problem won't LET me restore either. I have too much junk on my SYSTEM. THINK I'll just reformat and start anew.

Thanks everyone! See ya after the format!Since you didn't mention i made a wrong assumption...

My Bad.A good format and reinstall solves all Windows problems, for a while.

Solve : Stting printer default?

Answer»

I have two printers, a fast one and aslow one for back up. I keep setting the fast one as the default printer, but each time i boot, the slow one becomes the default printer. I am running Windows XP, home ed. I set the default trough the "printers and faxes" window of the control panel, yet the problem persists. What am I missing here? Anybody know?? tks JimUninstall the slow one...since it is an emergency backup only install it in an emergency...

patio. 8-)I guess you are right, I will do that. I was hoping that maybe I was overlooking something obvious. GETTING sort of long in the tooth and forgetful. Thanks for your help, JimWell, that seems like a bit of a nuisance to uninstall it and then just temporarily install it if you need it. Before accepting that as the solution, I think I would visit the printer manufacturer's website and see whether they have a newer driver for that printer than the one you have and, if so, download it and install it and see whether this solves the problem.

I believe allowing printers to sit for months without being used is not a good thing. If you uninstall the slower printer and don't use it for months, you may find that it won't work right the next time you try using it.SOYBEAN, Yeah, I agree with you. I am on the road much of the year in a motorhome, and I use the slow printer because of it's small size. When I am on the road, I take the cartridges out of the faster one and keep them with me and cool and moist. When I am home I occasionally use the slower one just to keep it active.
I use HP printers because they give me the best performance under these conditions. I have had bad luck with Lexmark and Canon, altho Canon was the better of the two.
To address the current problem, I did go into the device manager ands deactive the slow printer. Lets see if that works. That way I don't have to uninstall it.
Thanks for the comeback, JImHmmm, how do you disable a printer via Device Manager. It does not show "Printers". At least, mine does not. It shows the ports (USB or LPT1) that printers connect to, but it does not show printers. Is that what you meant? You disabled the LPT1 port or the USB port for a printer?

HEY! That's one on me. You are right. I went to "Imaging devices" and confused one of my scanners for the small printer, as they have close model numbers. Thanks for calling me on that. That would have given me fits later. I could disable the USB port that handles that prin ter, but I don't know which port it is. I suppose I could experiment. OH well, Thanks again, Jim

hmmm, maybe i could use the LPT1 port,Yes, I see that a printer connected to a Parallell port (LPT1) via Device Manager can be disabled by disabling the LPT1 port in Device Manager. I, too, have two printers connected to my computer, one via USB and one via Parallell port (LPT1). I just opened Device Manager, expanded the Ports (COM & LPT) to display the detail lines under it, selected "Printer Port (LPT1)", right CLICKED on it and selected Disable. I then ATTEMPTED to print with that printer. It would not print; I got a message in the Notification Area saying the device was disabled or something to that effect.

Similarly, under Universal Serial Bus controllers, in Device Manager, I see an item named "USB Printing Support". I can disable it the same as the LPT1 port. And, again, the printer will not print until I enable that USB item. The only difference was that, in the USB case, no message appeared in the Notification Area; it simply did not print. To All. Thanks guys, I finally found out what was causing the wrong printer to default every time i booted. Simple , The program for the wrong printer was in the startup config list and the other was not. I removed it and EUREKA, problem solved. simple simple simple, I hope that I learned something. Thanks again guys. Thanks for leaving FEEDBACK and letting us know how it turned out.

Please elaborate on this and what happened needing to remove the device. How about some specifics on the computer, age, operating system service pack, malware protection used and any other problems.

More info needed.
Try booting into SafeMode and Add/Remove

Alan <>< i have tried safe mode with no luck. the computer is two and a hald years old, from emachines, windows xp home, sp2, windows defender. and as for the original problem here goes nothing...

512mb ram, 2.8GHz intel celeron cpu

The sound on my computer has completely gone. the volume icon is missing. I have an onboard Realtek AC97 sound device.
All of a sudden, the other day i swithed on the pc and no sound. device manager REPORTS no audio problems, however system information says that IRQ 16 is being used by a graphics controller and usb universal host controller. in control panel under sounds and audio devices i get a "no audio device" message. the last two programs i installed are windows media player 11 and IE 7.0 about two weeks ago, and the problem starter yesterday.
i have tried system restore to no avail. BIOS sound is enabled. speakers work just fine on another pc. i can't Extract a copy of Sndvol32.exe from windows xp cd because all i have are the three restore cd's when i bought the pc, and when i try to reinstall audio drivers via the restore cd or from C:\Drivers\Audio\OriginalDriver the system stops installing at 80% and i get the following:"Realteck ac'97 audio (4.86) tool for driver update has encountered a problem and needs to CLOSE."
i tried unistalling realtek ac'97 in add/remove programs but i get the following pop up:
realtek ac'97 audio
>setupDLL\setupDLL.cpp (391)
pAPP:Realtek ac'97 audio
PVENDOR:Realtek semiconductor corp.
PGUID:fb08f381-6533-4108-b7dd-039e11fbc27e
$11.50.0.42618
windows XP service pack 2 (2600) IE 7.0.5700.6
Setup has experienced an error.
Please do the following:
- Close any running programs
- Empty your temporary folder
- Check your internet connection (Internet-based Setups)
error code 5001

when i run directX diagnostic tool i get the following:
Sound Tab 1: DirectSound test results: Failure at step 3 (DirectSoundCreate): HRESULT = 0x8878000a (The request failed because DirectSound resources, such as the priority level, were already in use by another caller.) and
Music Tab: DirectMusic test results: Failure at step 6 (Activating the IDirectMusicPort): HRESULT = 0x8878000a (The request failed because DirectSound resources, such as the priority level, were already in use by another caller.)

device manager shows the following under sound, video and game controllers:
audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, legacy video CAPTURE drivers, media control devices,
and video codecs. each device is enabled and supposedly "working properly".

when i installed a pci sound card the volum icon does come back and i can hear music, but i'd like to figure out the audio problem.
i KNOW i can do a windows xp re-install but that is going to be my last option.

please don't respond with, do a syster restore or try safe mode or disable onboard sound in BIOS, i have tried pretty much everything you can think of.

so how about it folks?"...device manager reports no audio problems, however system information says that IRQ 16 is being used by a graphics controller and usb universal host controller."

So can you change your IRQ for your sound card?

Alan <>< there is no IRQ listed for the sound card in device manager's "resources by type" list. and system information says that IRQ 16 is being used by a graphics controller and usb universal host controller with, and i quote, "no conflicts".Is this all original equipment from eMachines? You may want to ask them.

Real motherboards have the ability to change some of these settings in BIOS. Some name brand computers do not.yes this is all original equipment from eMachines, no hardware changes have been made since i bought the pc. if i can remove realtek ac'97 audio from add/remove programs maybe i can download the latest realtek drivers and get the *censored* thing working again.I would delete all of the items - audio, video and USB in Device Manager and reboot. Sometimes Windows just needs time to sort it out.

Drivers from eMachines are preferable over generic AC97 drivers.

Solve : Can't login to yahoo or ebay it won't accept...?

Answer»

my info. I know i'm using the correct ID and password but it keeps telling me it's invalid. It's happening with yahoo and ebay and I've had both these accounts for at least 4 years now with no problems whatsoever. What's wrong?

THanks in ADVANCE!!I think I would use the PROCEDURE for a forgotten password and reset your password once you get back into your account. That's the problem it won't accept my login ID or my password. I TRIED to sign up with a new account using my current login info and it says that account is taken already. I thought it was just a problem with yahoo until my Ebay starting acting the same way. Now I'm wondering if it's a computer virus or something.Well, try using another computer to login. That will quickly answer the issue of whether it has something to do with your computer. Do you have other online accounts (bank, credit card, etc.) that require secure logon? Can you logon to them?

Since this involves your eBay account, I think you should resolve this as soon as possible if you have a Paypal or any other financial account linked to it. Also, you should closely monitor any financial accounts linked to your eBay account; might also be a good idea to notifiy any affected financial accounts of this situation to limit your liability in case any unauthorized transactions are charged to your account(s).

This situation may be also be indication you need to improve your password security in the future. Hmmmm, it won't let me in on another computer either... So are you thinking that someone jacked my info and then changed my passwords??Yes, I think you should assume that might have happened. Perhaps you should visit eBay's Security & Resolution Center.
How would this have happened??? We don't allow anyone..and I mean anyone on our computer so how would someone have found my info??

I looked up my user id on ebay and it says I'm from CA... I'm in TX not CA someone has changed everything about my account except for my login id. This sucks!Did you use a "STRONG" password, one with numeric and symbol characters, along with letters? How long did you use the same password? Using passwords based on the names of spouses, children, pets, etc., especially without numeric and symbol characters, results in passwords that are not too difficult, for someone who knows you, to guess.Did you respond to an email from eBay (supposedly) that asked you to VERIFY your information? If you login through a "phishing" link, your information is private no more.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phishing

If you have a PayPal account I would check that pronto also!

Solve : Emergency: Missing NTLDR - Tried many things!?

Answer»

Okay, I'm in a really big problem here.

I need to be using my computer ASAP, but now it doesn't work!

It reads:
NTLDR is missing
Press any key to restart

Now, I've tried the FOLLOWING things"
fixboot
fixmbr
bootcfg /rebuild

I've even tried the common solution of restarting my bios, and copying over the NTLDR files from the CD.

Finally, I've EVEN tried a windows XP repair! Then, as soon as it restarts to continue the repair process, NTLDR shows up AGAIN.

Any help will be GREATLY appreciate as I am in a crunch for time.

Thank you SO much in advance!!!!! Any help will be greatly appreciated. Is there a floppy disk in the drive? No, the computer only has a CD Drive.

Will offer a $10 paypal reward to one who can fix the problem!!!PC details (partitioning, file system, multi-boot :-?) - OS details (Home or Pro :-?) - OS disk details (is it full version, UPDATE, genuine :-?)

What was done immediately prior to the problem manifesting itself (downloads, installs etc...) :-?

Is your backup up-to-date :-?

ALSO your inside leg measurement - well, not quite - but we need details...Currently, I deleted my extra partition leaving only the windows XP partition.

Now, I get:
No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility

I've tried everything like I did above, except fixboot won't work.

Any ideas? What was on the extra partition? Was it another operating system? How did you "delete" your 'extra partition' :-? :-? Did you use a re-partitioning tool, if so which one :-?

I get the feeling you will now have to slave your hdd on another machine to recover files then reinstall your OS.

Here is what happened:

I installed linux on a separate partition on the drive

Then, XP didn't show up on the Linux boot menu so I did:
fixboot
fixMBR
bootcfg /rebuild

Then, that's when I got the missing NTLDR error

At that point, I deleted the other linux partition in hopes of that fixing it, by only giving the computer one partition to boot off of.

Now I'm at the point where it doesn't even find the XP partition bootable, even though it hasn't been touched. Quote

Now I'm at the point where it doesn't even find the XP partition bootable, even though it hasn't been touched.

Ahhhh Linux. Did you use Grub :-? Did you try to protect the MBR when installing Linux :-?
Previously I did but that's long gone now.....So the Linux install over-wrote your MBR - that's probably why the XP boot option didn't show on the 'Linux boot menu'. Now having 'deleted' your 'extra partition' there's no possibility of booting unless the MBR can be rewritten.

Perhaps someone with more knowledge & experience than I have will pick up your thread and come up with a brilliant answer to your problem. Meantime I recommend you consider slaving as in Reply #6

Good luckI can still boot off my CD drive.

What if I installed Linux or something like that?

Any sugestions to rewrite the MBR?Have you tried the repair install mentioned at below website?

http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/483/xp_repair_fix_master_boot_record_recovery_consoleYes,

As I mentioned I've tried it numerous times. You already stated you tried FixBoot, FixMbr and BootCFG so I guess you ran them in the Recovery Console which would have been my answer to your latest query.

I strongly recommend that you do not even ATTEMPT to install any Operating System until you have scrutinised your partitioning and the condition of your data files unless you are prepared to lose the lot That was my reason for asking if your backup is up-to-date. If it's not up-to-date you should try to recover critical files before taking a chance on their being over-written.

You didn't respond to the query about your partitions and whether a partitioning tool was used to 'delete' the 'extra partition' (Replies #3 and #6), it's possible that no partitions now exist, not even the partition on which XP was originally installed.

The Diskpart utility might be of some use but I have never used it so cannot COMMENT on its suitability.

Sorry, I'm out of steam on this one, someone else might step in

Good luck

Solve : HELP start up problems!?

Answer»

So,, my motherboard blew and got an Identical one and replaced it, it blew 3 days later. So then I replaced the blown capacitors and nothing happened. I then took my comp to a comp shop and they installed a new motherboard, it didnt work when I got it home, I took it back and they put anouther new motherboard in. this was working fine for a couple of weeks, then my comp got irritatingly slow and just started crashing over and over again. I restored it to 10 days ago, and it worked amazing for 20 mins, and bang, the power supply blew. So I replaced the power supply and now have problems loading XP. I get to the windows loading page, and then it just turns into a blank screen! what should I do next, how do I diagnose the problem?

thank you!sounds like you have been having a rough time, i have a question though... is the harddrive in the machine the same harddrive that has been through 4 motherboard failures? motherboards are known for "TAKING things down with them". my buddies motherboard died and took his video card with it... i would suggest a new harddrive.A lot of places wont check thoroughly, If it looks like the motherboard, they'll do that and say job done. I'd agree, and get all the hardware checked, especially the harddrive. And if the power supply had ruined several motherboards before it blew, the new one is suspect now too. So, what does the COMPUTER shop people say about their great work?

They seem RESPONSIBLE to me. :-?yes it is the same hard drive!!

So you gys think that my hard drive is messed??? *censored*!

how do I diagnose it??

why is my new power supply "suspect" Free diagnostics at the appropriate drive maker's web site.

That's a LOT of things to have "blown" in a computer. What is the make and wattage of the current power supply. It should be prominently displayed on the outside of it. What did you have previously, if known. What kind of motherboards are you blowing up? Quote

new - startech.com AP-300X 229W max 12v

my motherboards are socket A

If my hard drive is bad, why do I get the windows loading page?As i said, that power supply is suspect. Further it is a low end Chinese knock off with probably inadequate wattage IF it even produces what it should. You didn't mention your other hardware, but I would try the power supply estimator here to see what you need. A quality, name brand (think Antec) power supply should be used if the components are worth anything at all.

Solve : Part of Start-menu?

Answer»

How do you add new stuff to this part of the start menu?

I think you've got just about everything you can have on that part
Go to Control Panel, Taskbar and Start Menu, Start Menu, Customize, Advanced
From there you can add a few things and customize the look, for example System Administrative Tools, Printers and Faxes, and so on
As for adding anything not listed there, you'd have to edit the registry
I have seen some guides on the internet to do it, but I never saw the need in adding anything else to it, so I can't vouch for whether they work or not and how risky it is
Hope this helpsThanks. Can you please find the link to the TUTORIAL involving editing of the registry? Why don't you just change the properties to Classic Start Menu? It seems a lot better suited to what you want. It CERTAINLY is more logical to me.

By the way, editing the registry can hose your system if you don't do it correctly.1. Start/search, type in start menu, click OK
2. From the LIST, select the user (all users for eveyone), right click
3. Click "open containing folder"
4. Right click start menu folder and click "open"
5. In the program listing, right click, click on new, click shortcut
6. Add a shortcut to the program you want to appear in the start menu.

Sometimes just locating the program and right clicking will have an option "pin to start menu". This will add it to the start menu of the currently open account.Proph: because i want 2 add stuff to that part of the start-menu >!!

GX1_Man: I like the XP start-menu, the classic is just one line.

2k_dummy: That's not what I want to do, or at least I think so. What you say puts my shortcut under "all programs".ChapterNine - I don't know where I found the link now, try googling for it
If I get time I'll have a look myself, if I find it I'll post it here
But as GX1_Man said, editing the registry can seriously damage your system, so be careful and don't change anything you're not sure of, read instructions carefully, and make a backup first

2k_dummy - pinning things to the start menu adds it above the frequently used programs, not where ChapterNine wants to add things to
Then again - ChapterNine, why do you need to add things to that particular section of the start menu? Just curiousI dont NEED to, but, it would be mighty cool. And, it's also a good place to have things, you find them easy.Yes, it would be handy, I can SEE why you would want to do it
Keep looking for the registry edit, and I'll keep an eye out for you as wellThanks. Tell me if you find something. Will doPost in here if you do find something. I've been wondering how to do this too. What would you like to add, a directory, a file, a shortcut?
This can all be done from start menu properties, hit the advanced button, then the add button and browse to whatever you want to add. Quote

Strange, I don't have that add button that you mentioned. Quote

Solve : Desktop pictures.?

Answer»

Hi,

I am using Windows2000 Pro.

I have a dual monitor system, I am wondering is it possible to have different desktop picture
on each monitor? If so, how do I set it up?

Is there a good, preferablely free program I can use to have the desktop display random picture at a set time interval? The best I can find on the net is Wallpaper Switcher.NET, but the thing I don't like about it is that the fastest it can change picture is 30 minutes. I am just wondering if you guys have any idea that I don't know of.

Thanks.

BTry SEARCHING these sites:

http://www.download.com/
http://www.tucows.com/
http://downloads.zdnet.com/
http://www.snapfiles.com/To ANSWER your first question, YES, you should be able to have a different background on each monitor. I have dual monitors and have done that, although I'm not currently doing it. I have Win XP Pro and a nVidia video card with nVidia sofware installed. I believe that's key to being able to do this. I PRESUME the same thing could be done with ATI.

Tell us more about your system, particularly your display adapter/video card."Tell us more about your system, particularly your display adapter/video card."

Well, I use Windows 2000 Pro on my PC. The primary monitor is a 17" Sony CRT, max RESOLUTION is 1024x768. It is connected to the onboard Intel 82845/GL video.

The second monitor is a ACER AL2216W wide screen LCD, 1680x1050 pixels, it's connected to a nVidia GeForce4 MX440 64mb video card. Both are VGA output.

In the BIOS, Primary Video Adapter is set to Onboard.

In the Display control control panel, under the Settings tab,

Monitor #1 (the CRT.) --1. Default Monitor on Intel 82845G/GL Graphic Controller.
Monitor #2 (the LCD.) -- 2. Plug and Play Monitor On NVIDIA GeForce MX 440.
I also have nView Desktop Manager install on my machine.

Ummm, I guess that's all info I can find out now. Hope it will give a clue what to do.

Thank you.

Wait, how dumb of me. I just found out I can do it in the nView desktop manager!

Solve : LOCK in autoexe.bat?

Answer»

I have an old Compaq laptop and loaned it out to someone who screwed it up.
When I boot it up normally it returns a screen that says the command "lock" might allow
files to be corrupted. When I edit the auto exec.bat file and take out the LOCK line, the screen rolls.
When I boot from a floppy and CHANGE to C:drive, I can see the Windows file but I can't get it to run.
it is Win98SE.
Racer:

Please write the error message down and post a reply with the exact message, word-for-word. Also, does the computer get to the Windows desktop? Have you tried booting the computer in Safe Mode to see if the message displays then?

This info from the Windows 98 SE Setup.txt file on your Windows CD might help:

Editing Your Config.sys and Autoexec.bat Files
----------------------------------------------
Your computer's Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files tell your
computer what programs and devices to load at startup (for
example, a virus-scanner program in the Autoexec.bat file
may direct your computer to automatically load that program).
Windows 98 Setup will not run properly with some programs
and devices. To remove or disable such a program or device,
you may need to edit the Config.sys and/or Autoexec.bat files.

To edit the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files in Windows 98:

1. Click Start, click Run, type Sysedit, and then press ENTER.

2. Click the Autoexec.bat or Config.sys tab and clear the
check box at the beginning of any line(s) that you want
   to disable.

3. Click Apply, click OK, and then restart your computer.
Thanks for replies. I need to do some homework and will get back to you.No problem. Take it easy! 8-)The exact message is
WARNING
The lock command enables direct disc ACCESS by programs that can corrupt files or damage your computers settings.
Do you want to proceed Y=enter No=Esc

Also the computer WILL boot from a start up disc and it will run in the safe mode and does display the desktop but in 256 color.
I have a copy of the autoexec.bat file but can't figure out how to post it.
Try an alternative. Before you remove the LOCK command from autoexec.bat, from a DOS prompt enter the command UNLOCK c: . Close the DOS window and procede with the edit.Good thinking, 2k!

I'm unfamiliar with the unlock command. Does Racer have to add nul to the end of the command in this case?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/160048Ok thanks everybody.Had to take care of a few THINGS before I play with my hobby.
OK, I have the laptop beside my big pc. The message is:

DOSkey installed

WARNING: The LOCK command enables direct disk access by programs that can CORRUPT file names and/or DESTROY disk data, resulting in the loss of files on your disk.
Are you sure (Y/N)

once this message appears the laptop has to be re-started because it will not allow any further commands.

The autoexec.bat files is:
ECHO OFF
SET TMP=c:\windows\temp
SET TEMP=C:\windows\TEMP
SET PROMPT=$p$g
SET winbootdir=C:WINDOWS
SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS;c:\windows;c:\windows\COMMAND
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1
LoadHigh C:\WINDOWS\SmartDrv
LoadHigh C:\\Command\DOSKey
LOCK
REM
The following lines have been created by Windows.Do not modify them.
REM
C:
CD C:\
CALL C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM /W

thanks
planoracer
Try REM in front of the LOCK command...or...
Rename the autoexec.bat file to autoexec.old / reboot

Alan <>< Thanks to all that replied. I will try it again.

Solve : SATA and PATA?

Answer» HI,

I want to upgrade my motherboard and go for dual core CPU. I have TWO 300G HDs and two DVD burners connected to two IDE headers on my current motherboard, I don't want to give them up. Here are two questions:

Most newer mobos I looked at has only one IDE header, so I guess I will have to get a IDE to PCI card so that I can connect the DVD burners to it, That should work fine right?

At some point in the near FUTURE, I would like to setup a RAID 1 on the new mobo, would the SATA and the PATA drives co-exist peacefully?

Thanks.

B.PCI expansion card for IDE should work. You might have to install drivers if the BIOS setup of the CMOS chip of the mobo does not recognize the optical drives that are connected this way.

I would not TRY RAID with different HDD TYPES. Use two SATA drives instead. SATA and PATA might work well without using RAID.

Solve : Hardly any disk space!?

Answer»

I bought a used computer to be able to PLAY games and connect to the internet. It ended up getting the blue screen of death so I took off XP and installed 2000 on it. There's hardly anything on the computer not even Microsoft Office but yet I have no disk space at all. Can anyone help? I am trying to put things like Streets and TRIPS, and other USEFUL software but have no space to do it.

When I go to start the computer it gives me an option to start in XP or in 2000 could this have something to do with it? Yes, you probably installed a SECOND copy of Windows, which took up MORE space.

Go to My Computer, Drive C and right click and choose properties. What does it say?XP and are probably both there ....for what REASON one can only assume. And these are both legit copies? That's a lot of operating system software for one PC.

Solve : appearence problem?

Answer»

ok, so heres my problem.

when i logged on to my account all the bars and stuff that are normally blue or such, had reverted back to grey for some reason. so i went to the appearence options, changed it to windows xp (or somehting along those lines) and then thats when it got WIERD. what i MEAN by weird is that i can see very little. the bar at the bottom only displays the windows insignia, and blackness. when i hit it, i get the icons, but none of the text, same for everything ELSE, i get icons but no text, only black boxes. i even had to switch to a diffrent account to post this.

sooo, any suggestionsNeed...more...info...gasp

Operating system / antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new software?

Alan <>< :-)ya, as i reread that after i posted i figured i should add more info, but i coudlnt find an edit button.

operating system is XP ( i hope), hmm, my computer is PRETTY heavy on spyware and virus, we have Norton, Zonealarm, we sweep for virus about once a month. i think we have more too, but i dont know the names of them. and for the service packs, umm, how exactly would i find out.

it screwed up right after i hit apply, after i set it to WIndows XP, i hyave never had a problem with this computer before. the last tiem i installed somehting was about half a year ago."...and for the service packs, umm, how exactly would i find out. "

Go into Control Panel / System. It should tell you your service pack there.

Do a system restore to a point prior to the problem starting:

Start / Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / choose a restore point

Alan <><

ok, thanks, but dod i have to do teh system restore on my account or can i do it on a diffrent one. it would be very hard for me to do it on mine cuz, well, i cant see anyhting

note: if there is a WAY to do it in the command window i can do that, for some reason i can see the command text.Do you have a real Windows CD if that is required?um, i dont undestand the question.

Solve : Problems installing windows media player?

Koll..... You really must sort out your pc ......... according to the imageshack image you posted ........ I'm seeing 2 antiviruses ........ you should only have one ..... and further to that it says that if you uninstall sp2 , that some programs may not run properly ...... So have you installed SP2 and removed it ...or is it still installed ?

DL65
I've had two anti-virues for ages and they've both helped me out a lot. As far as I can see they don't conflict with eachother so I don't see any REASON for me to uninstall one of them.

I posted the wrong picture. SP2 was installed in the past, then uninstalled, but for some reason it still says its installed when I go to the CONTROL panel. Its definately not installed properly though becuase its still SP1. Thats the message I saw when I tried removing it from the control panel before going to install it properly, but decided not to in case it did mess up some programs.Koll...... Hummmmmmm , you posted the wrong pic....... could you post the right pic ?

Go into control panel and click on system , when system properties opens , take a screen shot of it and post it for us . ( General tab )

dl65 I don't have the right picture, maybe I will try and install SP2 again and see what it says and hopefully it won't affect any programs. System info below.

http://img484.imageshack.us/img484/6742/system3hu5.jpgAnd right you are, Koll. That is obviously a legal one. LOL ...... It looks like a keeper ........ try SP2 again ........ and if necessary phone MS and have their tech assist you to get it installed ........ and then be sure and get the updates .

Solve : xp protected files and folders?

Answer»

hello,
i am fairly knowledgeable in computers, i upgraded my computer and installed a new hard drive and xp on it and decided to add my old hard drive to the new system hoping to retrieve my stuff off it. At present it still has the old OS system on it. The problem is that i protected my documents from other users viewing and now can not get into it. i have tried sharing but it didn't work. i can view all the old windows files, but this one, even the other uses documents. however the old OS install is screwed therefore i cant even unplug the new hard drive and boot from the old hard drives. is there any way i can retrieve the information or is it lost forever. when trying to OPEN my documents in the old OS system i get my documents is not ACCESSIBLE.
Open Explorer / right-click the folder you want / choose Properties / SECURITY / Owner. It's here you can take ownership.

Alan <>< i cant seem to find security and owner all i get is when i right click on folder is general, sharing and customize. now i cant share this folder or even move it. i am running xp pro. i think it mybe just me not understanding could you try and explain it a bit more. thank you i got it i had to disable simple file sharing in tools before i got security up, when i left click on it. i do have a COUPLE of other questions if you have time to answer them.

1. i found my favorites folder i am just unsure how to add them to my new favorites.

2. i also so found my old contact list. the file type is windowslivecontact file and when i try to open it tells me windows cant open it so i seach the web looking for source to open it then it comes up with widows dose not recognize this file type and it SAYS FILExt. is there anyway to open it to see what is on it.Here is the Microsoft link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421 it tells how to take ownership of a file or folder. Hope this helps.

no one with any idea ? :-/ :-/OK, an idea: get an add-on sound card to replace your onboard sound. If you are using Windows XP and logged on as a limited user, you will likely not be able to make such changes. TRY logging on as an administrator, making the changes, and then logging back on with your limited account.

Also, if you are using the PC at work, your IT department might have configured your user account so that any changes you make will not be permanent. If my suggestions don't work, it is a hardware problem. Try SB's advice, or try reinstalling the drivers for the sound card. Quote

someone suggested this ,but then doesn't it imply that my on board sound is faulty ?i don't like to believe this cos i just bought a new pc with everything new ,i think the sound card on my desktop board should be the best one for me instead of additional one ,or do u think there are other separate sound card that would equally be as genuine as the one that comes with my board ?
what i wanted to do was to ask that the board be changed as its on warranty ,also am always using my administrator account ,in fact i didn't even create other guest account with my pc,i have also reinstalled audio drivers from the original cd that came with my Intel board and yet it didn't solve the problem ,anymore advice would be appreciated ,thanks .

Solve : Recycle bin VS Partitions?

Answer»

Hello, weird topic uh? As weird as my problem. Let me explain...
OS: WIN2K Pro SP4
Partitions: C (win2k, ntfs) | D (stuff, fat32) | E (win98, fat32)
Problem: when I DELETE a FILE (of any size) on partition D, the file is simply deleted and not put in the recycle bin as it should...If the same file(s) are on the others partitions and that I delete it (or them), it moves the file in the recycle bin. How to make it to work on partition D like others?

Precision: In recycle bin properties, "use one setting for all drives" is on, so it should work on "D" like others partitions. It works on C and E but not on D.If drive D is a removable drive or a network drive, you cannot add a recycle bin to it in your OS. Quote

If drive D is a removable drive or a network drive, you cannot add a recycle bin to it in your OS.
All partitions are on the same hard disk and have been created by PMagic8. There is no removable drive or network drive. One HD, 3 partitions. Partition order on the disk are:
Win98, Win2k, Stuff (contains only files, no OS)
The "Stuff" partition is in FAT32 to allow both OS to have access to it.

Also, it cannot be a ntfs-fat32 problem because moving in the recycle bin works both for files deleted on Win98 partition and on the Win2k partition.Try resetting each partition to local settings in Recycle Bin instead of Global and see if this works.
If not run chkdsk on the offending partition.

Another thing you can CHECK empty the recycle bin on C: Now open the D: partition and create a text file called test and save it to the D: partition. Delete it and return to the C: partition. Open the recycle bin and see if it is there.

P.S. Are you running any Norton products on that machine ? ?Maybe try this:

I think this stuff could really work. I will try it and tell you after. It's not on my own computer so I cannot test it right now. And about antivirus stuff, of course there is no real-time protection activated and apps affecting the recycle bin like undelete etc.

Solve : Please help. Windows XP not recognizing HD??

Answer»

No, you need to tell me your computer or motherboard make and model.

We're almost there.

If you don't know that, run this:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.htmlMOTHERBOARD NAME: DELL DIMENSION 8400

DISK DRIVE: Maxtor 6Y080M0 (80 GB, 7200 RPM, SATA)

Guess it's a SATA after all...

When I finally do get a hold of this driver, how can I direct XP setup to look in the D:\

I hit F6 just to see what happens, and it only mentioned the A:\ Drive.

I suppose I could "slipstream" the driver into a new Bootable XP SETUP cd I can make.

But, I need the driver. Some people have reported inability with that model to load off anything other than a FLOPPY! And you make it sound like there was no option to change it.

This is a bad thing. (Personally I will always have a floppy for a lot of reasons, but we won't go into that now.)

The suggested resolution is to borrow a floppy for the install. Scroll down a liittle farther and you will see how a few people overcame this by themselves by altering BIOS settings!

Let me know if this works. SORRY we didn't get here sooner. I suppose I could "slipstream" the driver into a new Bootable XP SETUP cd I can make.

But, I need the driver. This might be easier if it works:

Reboot your system and hit F2 as soon as you see the Dell startup screen (the options are F2 for setup, F12 for boot sequence).

In the System Setup screen, do these steps.

Select Drives:
Make sure your Diskette Drive (3.5 floppy) is set properly (Usually set to Internal)
Make sure that "Drive 0: SATA-0" drive is set to "ON"

Go to "SATA Operation":

Your system proabaly came set to "RAID Autodetect / AHCI" - THIS SETTING CAUSES YOUR SYSTEM TO GO INTO AN IDE LOOP AND DOESN'T ALLOW IT TO FIND YOUR FACTORY INSTALLED SATA DRIVE.

CHANGE THE SATA OPERATION SETTING TO "COMBINATION"

Reboot - make sure that the boot sequence is set to CD rom before HD and make sure that the reinstall CD is in the drive. Setup will load, hit enter to reinstall XP. Your HD should now be detected and you should see the licensing agreement.

If you have your FILES backed up I reccommend deleting the partition and reformatting prior to installing XP, it will give you that option after the license agreement.

Once you have successfully reinstalled the OS, Dell reccommends that you change the SATA Operation setting back to RAID AUTODETECT / AHCI (or back to whatever your factory setting was) to avoid any problems with other IDE devices installed on your system.
Here goes...

Wish me luck!I'll keep the light on. Thank you so much for your help. I really do appreciate it.

The little "trick" worked, and I'm now finally on my dual-boot Ubuntu Linux OS.

Amazing what can be accomplish with a few mouse-clicks...I'm glad you are all fixed up and THANKS for posting back.

I HOPE you spend a lot of time on the Linux boot.

Solve : Music CD Error InCDsrv.exe?

Answer»

Hi,
On my son's COMPUTER everytime he puts in a music CD the following error appears: InCdsrv.exe.
I have updated all drivers and downloaded all Xp updates. Data CDs work fine it only SEEMS to be music CDs that are not recognised. When I go to open the CD from my computer the PC freezes.
Any suggestions gratefully accepted. What software are you using to try and play the CD?
I believe INCDsrv is related to the Nero InCD program, in which case it may be a problem with Nero
Did you do anything before this problem started happening?Calum is correct INCD is a component of the Nero program...it is what's known as packet writing software...basically letting you use a blank CD just like a floppy.
If you don't use it that often i would suggest un-installing it altogether.
Nero will still function fine
It has been known to cause CONFLICTS with other software as well.

patio. 8-)I have just removed Nero and everything works a treat. MANY thanks. I would never have found this. No problem..stop by anytime.
For a burning alternative DLoad and install CDBurner XPro...free and runs good.

Solve : No prompt to download .zip files?

Answer»

I am SURE this is self inflicted. When requesting a file to download that is a *.zip: File downloads automatically and opens with out asking for permission. What do I do to force prompting again? Other file extensions ask me when downloading.

Using Windows XP SP2 IE7When downloading a zip file from the Internet, choose the option to Save.Worse than that, Doc, alas.

Control Panel-->Folder options-->File types. Find the file type in the list (e.g. ZIP). Click Advanced. Check "Confirm open after download".

I think that should do it...Well. I check and it is SET up that way. I DECIDED ot uninstall WinZip and reinstall it after a reboot. Problem fixed. Must have been native to WinZip or an option in there some where bypassing SECURITY.

Solve : FF2.0?

Answer»

Has anyone downloaded/installed FF2.0? If so, what has been your experience? I SEE that it is available from their website but haven't downloaded or installed yet.

Remember what your dad used to SAY..."never buy the new model, wait awhile until all the bugs are worked out..."

Alan <>< :-)Been using it since release, at home and at work. Not experienced any problems at all and all the extensions that I need still work perfectly. Seems fine. Still my browser of preference. Thanks Rob

I'll drop it on ONE of my TEST boxes and try it for a few DAYS. I have several clients I've installed FF1.5.0.7 on and want to make sure it won't goof up their machines.

My browser of choice as well.

Alan <>< I have FF2, been using it since the release day, at home and on my memory stick (portable version, it rules)
Absolutely loving it (except the new theme), I find that it's so much faster and uses less memory than FF1.5 and earlier
I also tweaked it a little so the toolbars etc take up less space, it's so cool now
As you might be able to tell, I'm a BIG fan of Firefox

Solve : Excel formula advice needed?

Answer»

Hi.
I NEED some help.
I have one file that needs to have INFO in it from various other FILES. eg, file 1 has info from file a, b, c...x, y, z.

If I make cell A1 in file 1 EQUAL to A1 in file a, I want it to fill cell B1 to D1 in file 1 with cell B3 to D3 from file a automatically.

I want cell B1 to D1 in file 1 to collect their info from specified CELLS in whichever file I specify in cell A1. If I specify file b in A1, I want it to collect B3 to D3 in file b, etc.

I know how to do this one cell at a time, but that would mean that I will have to add the same formula and adjust it a bit about a million times. It will take hours...

Can someone please help me with a formula of some sorts that can be used in this situation.

If I haven't explained it clearly enough, let me know and I'll give more info.

Solve : This is really freaking me out?

Answer»

Ok I have been having problems with very slow opening programs and folders, I have had alot of good ADVICE and help on here, thank you very much. It is still running slower than normal but better, I clocked the times on a stop watch it was taking between 45 to 90 seconds to open My Documents, now it opens in around 15 to 20 seconds, the thing is just a few minutes ago I clicked and BOOM it instantly opened, just like it used to,I was stunned, so I went on an opening spree, everything opened instantly, man I was a happy camper, then quick as it started working right, it started opening slow again, BUMMER for sure man. I am at a total loss. Just thought I would share that with you all. Again thanks for all the help and advise. I am going to try Westren Digitals site and see if they can help, maybe its my hard drive, if not, maybe formatting my hard drive is my only option. Any other ideas before I do the dirty deed?Panda Activescan
Ewido Online ScanBefore you re-install everything, do this first:

1. Do you have Norton anti virus, Macfee anti virus and/or other anti virus programs installed? If so remove them all by using the Add/Remove program. (Except for AVG.)

2. If you don't already have AVG anti virus install AVG. The only anti virus program I trust.

3. Do a full virus scan.

4. Scan for spyware by using ad-ware, spybot and AVG anti spyware.

5. Add/Remove any programs that that you don't need.

6. Clean out you internet temp, cookies files etc.

7. Disable all startup programs.

8. Use RegClean to clean out your registry. Warning, read the instruction CAREFULLY before you do so. If you clean out the WRONG registry, some program you need may not work.

9. Reboot your PC in safe mode.

10. Clean your registry with RegClean in safe mode once more.

11. Reboot again, your computer should be in good shape. if this this doesn't work, you might have to go for the final resort - reinstall the OS.

Solve : Missing D: Drive?

Answer»

I am currently having problems locating my D: Drive. It is missing from My Computer as well as Windows Explorer. It seems to be working mechanically but cannot be located by any program or the computer itself. I attempted doing the following:

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]

Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class

Key NAME: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]

Exit Registry and Reboot

Unfortunately, this did not solve the problem. Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you very much!

Operating system / antivirus & antispyware protection / when it started happening / did it ever work right / why you went to the registry first?

ALAN <>< This just recently began happening. I think just after completing a Microsoft Update. The drive has worked properly for the past 2 years. I am using an IBM R40 Thinkpad and have Norton Anti-Virus and Ad-Aware SE Spyware protection. I went to the registry because someone advised to look there first.

Thank you for your time!Playing in the registry should never be done first and you must take precautions, like backing it up first, in case you hose everything.

Is the drive seen in the BIOS?

What happened before the drive went missing? Does it show in My Computer and you can't ACCESS it, or it looks like it just is not there? I am assuming this is the CDROM, so can you remove the drive and reinsert? (My T20 has a dockable bat.)Make sure it is properly seated.
Then re-boot right clik My Computer and select Manage...see if it is showing up in Disk MANAGEMENT.

patio 8-)It is still not showing up in Disk Management. The D: Drive does not show up at all in My Computer. Yes, it is a CD-ROM. How can I see if the drive is in BIOS? Thank you again for trying to help me!On a Thinkpad you need to hit F1 at re-boot to enter the BIOS.
However if you are not familiar with this procedure it is best to have someone who is have a look at it...Unbelievable! I removed the drive and re-inserted it... and it's appearing again! I feel like an idiot! Thank you for your help. Good to hear...stop by anytime. Quote

I get this problem sometimes with my 40gb Seagate which used to be the Primary HDD when I first bought the computer, now I have a 120gb Western Digital as my Primary and I use the Seagate as a slave. Sometimes, usually when I am trying to extract an image over 3gig or copy something rather large to the Seagate I get the usual Cyclic Redundancy Check, I then restart the computer and on startup where it says 'Checking Hardware' or whatever it says, the Seagate isn't listed, so I have to turn the computer off, open it up and just pull out the IDE cable and stick it back in again and it works fine for a couple of months until I have to do it again.

Maybe I should just buy a new computer, but then again, need a car, job, money, etc. bah, stuff it.

or

http://www.truecrypt.org/To the Danger Zone ! !Is your hard drive formatted NTFS? If so, I believe you could create an encrypted folder for your files. Then, create other administrative accounts for other users. That should give them access to all programs but not to the files you put in your encrypted folder under your account. An encrypted folder can only be accessed via the user account in which it was created; even other adminstrative accounts can not acess it.Just a caveat (beyond the usual encryption caveats) MS's encryption on NTFS filesystems is known to be reversible relatively easily. I.e. it's not secure. On the other hand, if you forget your pass phrase, you have a better chance of getting your stuff back...

Solve : Arghhhh :-( Frozen OE and alien message freeze?

Answer»

OE is frozen like a lollipop-the green one, lol

Not delicious and not funny. Tried to reinstall. Nope. There is what seems to be a message (no attachment- no virus) that is frozen and nothing else will come in. I went to server to delete message but it's invisible or just plain not there. It's a phantom ARGHHHHHHHHHH

So, can't use OE. Running Windows 2000 NT and OE6 on PC. The rest of the stuff, programs, etc is fine. Ran virus, trojan and alien form scans to no avail. Even tried my luck (oh boy) at MSFT site-what a JOKE)

Can anyone help me? I've got tons and tons of stuff filed in there and need to have access to it (of course, of course, I do not have backup- don't KNOW how to do that )

Solve : my pc trips off (not normal shut)?

Answer»

hello people,
my computer woulod trip off most times ,i mean it doesnt shut itselfe down the normal way that pc would shut down ,it would just trip off and both the MONITOR and the cpu would stop instantly, when this happen and i press the start up button on my cpu cabinet ,the pc would not start ,however if i swithc off the pc from the main switch and switch it on after about 5 seconds ,then the pc would start when i pressthe start up button on the cpu,but after booting up the pc would also do the same thing and shut itself down in about 2 to 5 mins of booting up ,the only way i COULD use the pc after this shut down is to leave it to "cool" down for about 10 to 15 mins ,
after this interval the pc would start working normal again ,i have noticed that this problem happens 90% when the pc have been on for several hours ,like 7 to 10 hours ,the problem also happens when i try to scan my pc with any type of anti virus or antispyware ,it also happens when i open multiple websites while using the internet or when my pc became frozen,
when this happens and i wont be able to get the pc to work unless i have to wait for 10 to 15 mins for it to "cool" down ,i tried to boot the pc in safe mode ,but still it shut down again ,so i have come to think that something always gets "heated" when ever the pc have WORKED for several hours or while i do scan for virus or spyware and would "cool" down only i LET the pc rest for few mins ,this led me to think that it might be hardware problem, though i dont know what it could be ,and ofcos i could be all wrong .
also sometimes this very problem would disappear for about a month or so and then come back again,i have formated my hardrive times without number yet it didnt solve this problem,i upgraded my pc from 256 mb ram to 512 yet to no avail ,i have also removed several programs to free up the pc and still it didnt stop .
i also suspect that the problem might be from the power supply and the fan ,cos i thought they might be getting overheated, but as i said am not too expert on these ,so i might be wrong ,
i have windows xp professional with sevice pack 2,my pc specifications are INTEL(R) CELERON(R) CPU 1.7GHz

i would realy apprechiate any help to solve this problem ,thanks and looking forward for some help .

Solve : XP - Extremely Slow, No Desktop BG options.?

Hi, here's the problem:

You cannot choose a background what-so-ever for some reason, just stays as a blue screen. Windows also takes atleast 10-15 minutes to start up properly, and once it does start up and you click say IE, it will take another 5 minutes to load that. This isn't my computer, it's my grandparents, I have a heap of crap at my house but this is relatively new and better and it's slower than mine?? *censored*?

System Idle Manager uses 94% of the processor ALL THE TIME, not just when it is idling, usually it is high when there is nothing going on, and when you start a program it goes down, but for some reason it stays on a consistent 90 to 98.

System restore will not allow you to go back a month.

Done. Yeah. Hope to hear from someone soon, this slowness is frustrating.
Don't know if this helps but this comp has the new IE (the ripoff of Firefox), seems to use up a lot of mb.Svchost is a legitimate Windows process. BUT -

It can also be a worm or Trojan Horse (which are each a kind of computer virus) disguising itself as the legitimate Windows process. It is a popular ruse:

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2005-29,GGLG:en&q=svchost%2eexe+site%3asymantec%2ecom

A brief explanation is here:

http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/svchost/

Rather than trying to figure out what has infected the computer and remove it manually (by editing the registry and deleting the files as indicated in one of the links above), your best treatment might be to reinstall Windows and choose the option to reformat the hard drive. This will delete all documents and programs, but will likely rid the system of the terminal infection.

You can try to backup documents, pictures, music, etc., but you run the risk of reinfecting the system. After you reformat and reinstall Windows, make sure you install a good antivirus program, download the updates, and do a full system scan.
Yeah, always sus with SVCHOST, there's two processes of it running at the moment, one by system and one by network. :S

That's all fine, but how does that effect the background options? As in, the desktop is blue CONSTANTLY, when you right click the desktop > properties, everything is unselectable, no options to change the background what-so-ever, even when you are in explorer (my pictures) or something and you right click > set as desktop bg, that doesn't do anything either except when you start up the computer and shut it down, when windows shuts down explorer or just before it starts up the picture you want as the background is there. Quite odd.

Other than that there seems to be nothing wrong with it, system restore doesn't work either what-so-ever even after you create restore points. No crc checks or anything, which is fine.

Yeah, a clean format sounds like the only resolution at the moment.

As this isn't my computer, what anti virus and firewall programs would you recommend for this? It has to be rather user friendly as it is my grandparents computer.

So far they run AVGFREE, which is pretty good imho, I have the new norton antivirus, and I hate it, it's rather pointless to tell you the truth, I deleted it and stuck on Ewido and AVG.

I cbf playing around with the registry, as I will most likely screw it up and have to reformat anyway. Any other suggestions, such as safe mode options?

That's a good question (just thought of something) how did it get there? SVCHOST that is, not the normal system file, the bad one? All the downloads on here are pretty legit, no P2P crap, only downloads here are: the new IE and anti virus updates.

Below is a screenshot of what I am not able to do to the background. (desktop properties window)

Anyway, thank you for your help so far, if you could answer the questions above it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
hi nyteshyft, your grandparents' computer is infected with malware. To be more specific it is infected with the "My Web Search" toolbar. I can tell you how to get rid of it manually but it would be easier for both of us if you just do the following:

Download and install Ad-Aware SE

Download and and install Spybot Search & Destroy

Update both programs (update AVG Anti-Virus too while you're at it)

Turn system restore OFF and then boot into safe mode.

Click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and LOCATE "My Web Search" and click Change/Remove to uninstall it.

Run full scans with Ad-Aware, Spybot & AVG one at a time removing anything nasty they find.

Reboot

That should take care of it.

Rename "HiJackThis.exe" to something else (e.g. "HJT2K6.exe") and then run another scan and post the new logfile.

- JPH
Thanks dude, my grandad already saw your post before I did and did what you asked. I downloaded that registry fixing thing, paid for it and what not, seemed to fix it (344 registry errors :S) lol.

The desktop is fixed, etc. Only problem is that the PC runs too slow, but I think that's because it's only got bloody 248mb SDRAM which in todays standards is ridiculously pathetic, but then again, it's not like my grandparents are going to play Need For Speed: Most WANTED or Oblivion, so I suppose it's all good.

Thanks heaps guys.

You know what's funny and even more pathetic... I'm getting my masters degree in IT (haven't started yet, that's next year )and I couldn't figure out *censored* was wrong with this thing, I hate you Mr. Gates, I hate you so much it hurts. That man needs to get these things called "Programmers", not "Script Kiddies".

Thanking CH.com

Solve : Constant HD Light?

Answer»

Hello all. My orange/yellow light stays on all the time, meaning that hard drive won't turn and Windows XP won't "line up" and operate. I would like to blame it on the tech who used a pirate XP Professional setup disk, but more likely the culprit was me. If I take it back to be fixed, the tech is going to charge me another 95 dollars, with no guarantee this won't HAPPEN again.

Please email me with technical cause of constant HD light and how I can "recover" my computer. Thanks.Well you need to GET a legal XP, that's for starts.

Is the hard drive installed correctly and jumpered correctly? How many drives in the machine? You can get free diagnostics from the appropriate drive maker's site, but it is probably in wrong.

Let me SEE if I got this right, OK? You paid someone $95 to do a job which was not ACCURATELY done and you don't want to go back because they don't warranty their WORK and would charge you more. And furthermore someone had a pirate CD and installed it and you don't know who it was?

There is a lot more to this story than you are revealing my friend.

Solve : Screwed up a hidden window in winamp. Screen?

Answer»

Ok, I really screwed something up here. I downloaded a small tool that's used for hiding and showing hidden windows (window handles). I was trying to find one that was hidden.. and I chose the wrong one from the list (called Player Window) and "un-hid" it.

As soon as I did that, my winamp went nuts and pretty much made itself full screen, so I went BACK in that program and re-hid the window. Now my winamp is completely messed up.

When I try to view it in normal mode, it looks fine, like this:

But when I change it to Windowshade mode (the thin display), this happens:

I have rebooted, uninstalled winamp, REINSTALLED winamp (new version even), and it's still doing this.

I don't know why that "hidden window" would stay modified even after reboots and reinstalls. There's got to be something in windows that's remembering that window's state.. be it a registry key or something else.. but I haven't the slightest clue where to look. Also, it only happens with the "modern skin" support enabled. If I change it back to the ugly old classic winamp style, it functions just fine.

Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this? Any help is appreciated.. this is a weird problem.

ThanksWas it "Window handles" or was it "WindowBlinds" from Stardock Software?

Handles. I'm guessing you got windowblinds from when I said windowshade mode. That's winamp's term for the thin, button-only version.

I used this program:
http://khsw.blogspot.com/2004/08/application-lost-after-crash-of.htmlThat is absolutely the kind of thing I would NEVER install on my computer. You're lucky that that is all that (apparently) happened.

How about a system restore to a point before you installed this? There's nothing wrong with a program like that... I've had to use this type of software before when troubleshooting peoples' computer problems, I just happened to mess with a grumpy window this time.

I'd rather not use system restore as this is not that big of a deal.. it's just annoying. I'm fine with using winamp's old mode if I have to, but obviously I'd prefer to fix the problem if possible.

If you're curious WHY I used this in the first place.. it's because I was playing a flash game, and I wanted to use a memory editor to give myself extra lives so I could just mess around and practice.. and I couldn't find which process I needed to search in. So I thought maybe a program that enumerated window handles like this would ALLOW me to see a special window that was used by the flash player and trace back to the parent application. That's why when I saw "Player Window", I thought it may have been for the flash player.

Anyway, I'd much rather fix the problem than run from it.. so I guess I'll wait and see if anyone else might have a hunch as to how to fix this. I know it's a pretty off-the-wall problem, so I'm not expecting anyone to know the answer.. but it's worth a shot.

Thanks Quote

There's nothing wrong with a program like that

Well, we just have to disagree on that one. I don't download software from a blog.

"Be careful, Windows might hang when you want to show certain windows"

Good luck on FINDING a solution.

Solve : ARRGGHHH *censored* PC?

Answer»

Right, I have a Dell DIMENSION 4700, which is a few years old. It used to be my main PC therefore nicely looked after and no virus's etc. But I got a new laptop and gave the old PC to my sister, who has run it into the ground.

BTW Dell Dimension had 1024MB RAM, 150GB Hard Drive, Runs on XP Home SP2. With a Pentuim 4 processor.

I attempt to turn it on, and the screen doesnt acknowledge the PC is connected, and the PC bleeps constantly, and if I persist, the fan gets really loud.

Occassionally it will loud up and let me log into my account, but not long enough for me to enter MSCONFIG and try to disable all non essential programs, to SEE if its a program infected with a virus.

Do any of you have any idea's :question

Tom.Format the hard drive and reinstall Windows. Quote

Format the hard drive and reinstall Windows.
And me being as dumb as I am, I do that by..................................... .............. ?Did that computer come with CDs for Windows and other software originally INSTALLED on it? If so, put the Windows CD (may be labeled Recovery ...) in the CD drive and restart the computer. It should boot from the CD and display a screen with options to format the hard drive, create paritions on the hard drive, install Windows, etc.

Formatting erases everthing from the hard drive. The objective here is to restore the system to state it was in when new; however, some extra software that was originally installed may not need to be reinstalled. For example, if the computer originally had a shortcut on the desktop to install AOL or an trial version of an anti-virus program, those things do not need to be reinstalled.

If you do not have the original CDs, then this approach is not an option. Then, you're stuck with trying to cleanup the mess she CREATED. If you have the CDs, I believe a fresh installation of Windows is going to be, by far, the cleanest solution here.
LOL, I'm sure I did, but I'm not 100% sure that I still have them.

So its a big search of the house for me..

Are there any other options.....? That at least start the PC up for me to do a Virus Scan.....? Even in Safe Mode...?

Tom.Yes, if you can start in Safe Mode and scan for viruses and adware/spyware, that could be quite helpful.Right, no I cant GET anywhere near Safe Mode, and ive insered the disc but the PC wont do anything with it.

What now?You may need to access your BIOS and change the setting for first boot device. In other words, the computer seems to be looking at the hard drive as the first device from which to bootup and, since that's not working, it just stops. By accessing the BIOS, you should be able to set the CD drive as the first boot device. Here's a guide on how to Access/Enter Motherboard BIOS.That would be F2 on a Dell.

There may well be hardware issues, but a Windows CD is surely going to be needed at some point as well.

Was that on the first stick of RAM only, or what?

Just for grins, test the RAM, one stick at a time for about an hour, then all together with a free download at www.memtest86.com

Also check the hard drive with the free diagnostics at the appropriate maker's web site.

Go to the Start Menu, then to Settings, then to the Control Panel. Go to Administrative Tools. Click on Error Log. What shows there?

Not sure...how do I ONLY test one stick of RAM? I've tried to read the directions for the memtest and must admit they're hard to read for me. Do I open up the box manually, pull out one stick..run test...then switch? and if so, which test (0-9) do i run?

OK, just a few more things to do.

As I've said once before...

Under Administrative Tools I only have these options:
component SERVICES
event viewer
services
computer mgmt
local security policy
data sources
performance

nothing about error logs

Ran the diagnostic tool...it produced a txt file that makes no sense to me whatsoever.

EDIT: Misread directions for diagnostic tool...trying again. Quote

Run all if possible. Yes, you have to physically remove the RAM.

Keep us posted.ok as far as error logs go, there were 3 basic kinds that happened on multiple occasions over the last few days (when the problem started)

Some are just errors that it says cant be defined (judging by the number of these...I'm pretty sure these are reboots). Quote

OK, just a few more things to do.

You can use SeaTools from the Seagate site if necessary.

We're about to the point where I ask you to remove everything except the CPU/Fan, Video card, 1 stick of RAM, keyboard and mouse and boot with that and see if it will function. THat means disconnect all drives and remove all cards.

Has this machine been overclocked at any point? What is the history on that power supply?
It's never been overclocked. The power supply came with the mobo and box from Systemax. I found an old power supply I think I might try plugging it in and seeing what happens.

Update: power supply doesn't work...meh.

It's getting worse, though I can do ok with only C drive hoked up.Ran Seagate, and everything passed except this: Quote

Recommendation:
If you are not experiencing data loss and SeaTools reports File
System Structure errors, they may be caused by a lock-up or
failure to shutdown Windows correctly. Many times, these errors
may be repaired through normal system maintenance which
includes using the Windows provided "Defrag" and
"Scandisk / Chkdsk / Error Checking" utilities.

If you are experiencing a hardware error, you should isolate
the cause and replace the failing component. If you are unsure how
to proceed with repairs, contact a computer professional. After
completing any maintenance tasks, run SeaTools again to
verify that all errors have been repaired. If errors continue to
occur, the system may not be stable. Again, contact a computer
professional.

OK so I went with advice I had gotten form other similar forum questions around the internet and replaced the power supply (350 w) with a larger one (420 w). The computer has been up and running fine through all applications and most of my games look better than before (I think I needed a better PSU..or a more powerful one).

My wife asks what might cause a power supply to go bad...I tell her some things and she mentions off-hand that she bumped the cord while she was playing Sims 2 on wednesday and unplugged it on accident...

Needless to say I was a bit annoyed that after 3 days of me pulling my hair out she just now mentions this...sigh. Guess some peopel don't mix with technology.

Thank everyone a million times over (esp. GX1-Man) for all the help. If nothing else you saved me a huge bill to have someone else tell me I need a new PSU. You guys are what give me hope for the internet community on bad days. Thanks a TON!!!Well that does make sense then. That is #9 on the list in the link I originally directed you to, by the way.

This is why it is so important to have ALL of the pertinent history on a problem before trying to solve it. It can save a LOT of steps.

Glad you are all FIXED up.
